Reflection Paper Search for Man s Meaning
Reflection Paper: A Critical Book Review of Man s Search for Meaning Heather Urmanski Silver
Lake College History 205 Instructor Diane Weiland August 19, 2012 Introduction Man s Search for
Meaning, is a biography and the personal memoir of Victor Frankl s experience in a Nazi
Concentration Camp. The book was initially published in 1946 in German and was then published in
1959 in English, under the title From Death Camp to Existentialism. Prior to World War II, Victor
Frankl was a psychiatrist working in Vienna and then later was responsible for running the neurology
department at a Jewish Hospital in Rothschild. In 1942 he and his family were arrested and deported.
They were separated and sent to concentration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His book details many examples of his theory and how it has helped many people improve their life,
survive tragedies, as well as documents how it kept him alive throughout three years of physical and
mental suffering while imprisoned. He also discusses how to find the meaning in one s life as well as
the tribulations that he and others went through once liberated. Author s Arguments Frankl believes
several things, and he shares these theories with his readers. First of all; the basic concept of
Logotherapy is that if one finds a purpose or a meaning in their life they can endure anything. He
supports this many times over with specific examples. He was forced to dig trenches in freezing cold
weather without adequate clothing and shoes. The shoes might be too tight causing pain and blisters,
he may have no socks, or the shoes might have holes in them, allowing the ice and snow to get against
his skin. He states that he got through these long, painful days by thinking about the beauty of nature
or thoughts of his wife. He focused on the unlikely fact that his wife might be alive, giving him the
will to live. Other times, while at another camp where he worked as the only doctor caring for 52 sick
and dying patients, he himself was on the brink of starvation and typhus and he did not give up. He
felt that it was his duty to care for these people, keep them comfortable and give them the best that he
could at the time with minimal resources. There might have

The Phrynosoma Hernandesi s Coloration
Does the Phrynosoma hernandesi s coloration assist in camouflaging itself into the environment?
Introduction: The issue of predation amoung most animals in not uncommon and has been the leading
reasons for increased survival pressures. As a result many animals have evolved various different
predatory strategies, these specific traits assist in increasing a species chances for survival.
Phrynosoma hernandesi is a species of lizard in the family Phrynosomatidae, and is a highly variable
species. Characteristics such as colour, pattern, and size vary based on its geographical location. Short
horned lizards such as the Phrynosoma hernandesi, have settled all across North America, particularly
in Saskatchewan and Alberta Canada as well as Montana, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico. The
Phrynosoma hernandesi favours the desert environment and generally resides in the semi arid
environments of North and Central America, much like a majority of short horned lizards that have
settled throughout Mexico and along northeastern Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango. Through years of
evolutionary adaptation Phrynosoma cornutum, which generally resides in the Sonoran desert,
Colorado, Kansas, and Northern Mexico, have developed cryptic colouration (William 2009).
Similarly, the colouration of the Phrynosoma hernandesi varies based on the geological location, its
colouring ranges between grey, yellowish brown, and reddish brown. Typically due to the colouration
of the Phrynosoma hernandesi

Letter From Birmingham Jail Summary
Summary for Letter From Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the Letter From Birmingham
Jail on April 16, 1963 and it began a huge transformation for the Civil Rights Movement. In his letter
he is basically responding to an advertisement from the Birmingham news. He was extremely
reasonable and modest all throughout his letter. He goes into great detail about how even though the
protestors at the movement were breaking federal laws but, their actions obeyed the moral law. When
he said this in his letter he was referring to St. Augustine because he says An unjust law is no law at all
. (King Jr., para.14). It was a nonviolent campaign and there were 4 basic steps being followed,
collection of facts to determine whether injustices

Collaboration And Devolution Era
1) The Collaboration and Devolution Era arose from the public s dissatisfaction of how agencies were
making decisions, which impacted their trust in the agencies, increasing complexity and uncertainty
over issues, and learning how to manage ecosystems (Cestero, Era of Collaboration Devolution
Lecture). The public was seeking seeking a cooperative and participatory approach to decision making
in order to integrate conservation and community development (Cestero). 2) Traditional public
involvement often means requiring a comment period of a certain length to allow the concerns of the
public to be heard by the agencies, which supporters of collaboration say is inadequate and even
counterproductive (Kyza Sousa). Collaboration, however,

How Did Hannibal Dominate The Roman Army
Hannibal Barca was a man bred for war. His ability to command a battlefield was unmatched during
his day. During the Second Punic War, Hannibal led the Carthaginian army against the Roman
Republic. He would march through Italy destroying the Roman legions battle after battle. His victories
at Trebia and Trasimene were just preludes to the massacre that he would conduct in Southern Italy, at
the Battle of Cannae. Rome had the best military of its time. They troops were drafted each year and
any land owning citizen could be picked. Every man was trained in the art of war, to be ruthless and
efficient on the battlefield. They were trained with pilum and gladus to kill their enemies. They fought
in what is known has a Maniple Legion. Maniples were the small formations that made up the bigger
battle lines. These smaller organizations trained together and became a coherent part of the Roman
lines. The Roman camps were laid out so that the Maniples camped in the same order that they line for
battle. And this powerhouse of a military had to main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hannibal s Balearic slingers with light spearmen advanced and enticed the Romans with volleys of
stones. The Romans quickly advanced and closed with the enemy. While the Romans advanced they
first met the Carthaginian center led by Hannibal. The Gauls and Spanish put up a fight then started
backing away. This lured the Romans to focus directly on the center. While the Carthaginian center
was collapsing, their cavalry was gaining ground. Hasdrubal, Hannibal s brother, was leading the
cavalry on the Carthaginian left. He led his force to obliterate the Roman cavalry on the Roman right
wing by the river. This freed him up to sweep behind the cavalry on the Roman left and help the
Numidian cavalry to dispatch the remaining Roman cavalry. In one fell swoop, Hasdrubal had
knocked out all of the Roman cavalry. The Roman army no longer had protection on their

Remember To Remember My Life
I will always remember the Summer of 1973. It was special because my Dad took my sister, brother
and I on vacation to visit my Aunt Fina who lived in Orange County while my Mom stayed home with
my two younger sisters. It would be the first time I would feel like I belonged and the first and last
time we would have Dad to ourselves even if it was for three short days.
On Tuesday we packed the yellow 1957 Chevy Bel Air and off we went. The three of us were so
excited and Dad who usually wanted everything quiet while he drove surprisingly let us sing and talk
and of course we took naps in between. We arrived late afternoon at my Aunt Fina s house and she
welcomed us and we greeted her and our cousins, Glenn and George. Uncle Glen was a lawyer and
did not arrive until late. I do not remember seeing him until the next day. She fed us dinner and the
only thing I remember about that dinner was the ranch dressing. It was the best salad dressing I had
ever tasted and Aunt Fina bragged that it was homemade and that the secret was the buttermilk.
Wednesday came and Auntie Fina already had breakfast ready for us. She made the best pancakes.
After we ate we all got into the Chevy and went to Knott s Berry Farm. I remember we had a great
time and Dad let us get souvenirs. My older sister got a little brown jar that was a bank with the Knott
s Berry farm logo on it, my brother got a train whistle, and I got a stuffed Snoopy dog. The train ride
was the best part. After a day at the park we

Exchanges with Industry Before Receipt of Proposals (4-4)
Exchanges With Industry Before Receipt of Proposals (4 4) Part 15 of the Federal Acquisition
Regulations (FAR) prescribes [the] policies and procedures governing competitive and
noncompetitive negotiated acquisitions. One component of negotiated acquisitions that occurs early in
the acquisition process is the solicitation of proposals. FAR 15.201, titled, Exchanges with Industry
before Receipt of Proposals, regulates the type and manner of communications, also sometimes
referred to as exchanges, which can and cannot take place between the Government and potential
suppliers prior to the receipt of a potential supplier s proposal and the subsequent award of a contract.

This fact is stated plainly and directly even in the FAR itself, where it is written, Agencies are
encouraged to promote early exchange of information about future acquisitions. Exchanges are
beneficial to all parties involved in the acquisition process, and there are a number of reasons why
such exchanges are beneficial. As the regulations explain at FAR 15.201(b), some of these benefits
include an improved understanding of the Government s requirements for the potential suppliers, and
also an improved understanding of a potential supplier s capabilities by the Government. Additionally,
exchanges between Government and potential suppliers can help the Government firm up or finalize
their acquisition plan and source selection strategy for a particular procurement by enabling them to
determine things such as, proposed contract type, terms and conditions, and acquisition planning
schedules, as well as, the feasibility of the requirement, including performance requirements,
statements of work, and data requirements.
I. TYPES OF EXCHANGES The FAR lists a number of ways in which exchanges between
Government and Industry might occur prior to the issuance of a contract award. Examples of these
types of exchanges include, Pre Solicitation Conferences and Industry Days; Pre Proposal
Conferences; and One on One Meetings with Potential Offerors. A. Pre Solicitation Conference /

Essay On Texas State Government
Today we will be discussing the structure and a few roles of the Texas state government, the purpose
and function of each type of local government, describing how some states have consolidated the
county and city functions into a single entity, and my opinion on whether or not Texas would be better
maintaining its several distinct types or consolidating them into a single larger entity.
The commissioner s court has several roles such as taxes, discretion in administering state programs,

This system works because the mayor realizes the need for managerial assistance. The city manager
reports only to the mayor while focusing on policy implementation and budgeting. This allows the
mayor to focus on addressing and working for a solution for major problems within the city. The
Commission form allows for the elected commissioners to form a board of administrative individuals
that oversee specific departments. They tend to favor their department the most instead of public
interest. They also fall into the easily corrupt and don t have specific areas of responsibility. General

Reader Response In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini
The Kite Runner Reader Response
Khaled Hosseini, the author of The Kite Runner, has a writing style unique to him in a way that the
majority of his sentences are short and non complex. Although there are numerous words in Farsi,
most are explained right away to limit confusion. You look khoshteep , Baba said. Handsome (
Hosseini 166). Hosseini incorporates an abundance of figurative language in his book, an example of
this is repetition. The line, There is a way to be good again is said several times throughout the book to
show its significance in the novel (Hosseini 2). Figurative language is extremely important because it
adds a meaning and value that is much stronger than saying it differently.
Hosseini uses many symbols in his novel. One, in particular, shows the loss of friendship between
Amir and Hassan, the pomegranate tree. In the beginning, Amir and Hassan would go to the tree to
read stories and eat pomegranates. After school, Hassan and I climbed its branches and snatched its
bloodred pomegranates (Hosseini 27 28). After Hassan had been raped, Amir and Hassan had gone
back to the tree but this time the loss of friendship starts to show through. When Amir throws
pomegranates at Hassan, it is him trying to get Haasan to punish Amir for what he had done wrong.
Hit me back! I spat. Hit me back, goddamn you ! I wished he would. I wished he d give me the
punishment I craved, so maybe I d finally sleep at night (Hosseini 92). Amir needs the punishment he
deserves so badly from the awful things he did and now wants to live up to. Once Amir goes back to
visit his home in Kabul, he finds the pomegranate tree that once was a symbol of friendship, and now
the loss of just that. Hassan said in his letter that the pomegranate tree hadn t borne fruit in years.
Looking at the wilted, leafless tree, I doubted it ever would again (Hosseini 264). The pomegranate
tree shows how during their friendship, the tree was beautiful and full of life. Now that Amir has
betrayed Hassan and left him to be killed, the tree is now lifeless and no fruit to be eaten symbolizing
the end of their relationship.
Another symbol that is extremely important is the flying of kites. This is significant because it is

Aquifer Depletion
The High Plains Aquifer encompasses approximately 174,000 square miles and stretches from Texas
to South Dakota (Fig. 1). This aquifer is also known as the Ogallala Aquifer due to the geologic
formation that it lies above. The development of this aquifer along with glacial till produced through
the retreat of glaciers during previous ice ages, has yielded a very productive region for farming. The
High Plains Aquifer is a valuable natural resource for farmers within the area, but several factors have
caused the depletion of this aquifer. Some of the factors that have caused the depletion include a slow
rate of recharge, the overlying formation, and heavy pumping within the aquifer. For an aquifer to
recharge quickly, the overlying formation must consist of a permeable and porous lithologic unit.
These rock units will allow for water to easily pass through them and into the underlying aquifer for
storage. Much of the sediment that makes up the aquifer consists of sand, silt, and gravel that were
derived from runoff of the Rocky Mountains. Recharge is from precipitation, infiltration, and
groundwater flow through the porous and permeable overlying lithologic unit to the aquifer. The High
Plains Aquifer is situated within a semiarid climate producing a slower rate of recharge. Much of the

The Ogallala Aquifer also supplies millions of people in the Midwest drinking water, so the depletion

Sex Marriage And Same Sex Parental Adoption
Intro to LGBT Studies

The topics of same sex marriage and same sex parental adoption have been controversial and ongoing
topics in recent years, which is a drastic change in mainstream society. People of the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LBGT) community have had a difficult time in gaining visibility and equal
civil liberties, one of which is marriage equality. Same sex couples have only recently been recognized
under the law as legal candidates for marriage rights, and adoption is now an additional option;
however, although the rights have been granted, there is still much more work to be done concerning
the full benefits of same sex marriage and adoption rights. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The word lesbian first made an appearance in the works of Sappho, a Greek poet whose origins date
back to seventh century BCE.
A notable exception [to nearly all Greek literary production being written by men] was the poet
Sappho, who lived in the seventh century BCE on the island of Lesbos (thus the word lesbian). / Many
young, wealthy Greek women were sent to Lesbos to study the arts with Sappho. Much of Sappho s
surviving poetry is love lyrics to these young women (Meem, Gibson, Alexander 2018).
The birth of lesbianism being a derivative of Sappho s Lesbos makes Sappho the rightful creator. In a
more modern context, the traditional societal views prohibited lesbian identifying women to be open,
thus forcing them to conceal their true affections.
Before the rise of the lesbian feminist movement in the early 1970 s, twentieth century women writers
were generally intimidated into silence about the lesbian experiences in their lives. In their literature,
male personae took the voice of their most auto biographical characters, and they were thus permitted
to love other women (Faderman 1979).
Faderman continues to explain how Sappho s island of Lesbos became a type of code in the vernacular
in the time of Lady Mary Montagu; her love letters to a woman named Anne Wortley included
illusions to the fictitious island and what it would be like to fancy ourselves in Lesbos

Chemical Burn Research Paper
The severity of a chemical burn depends on the following factors: corrosive capability of the chemical
burn, concentration of the chemical, temperature of the chemical or the solution in which it dissolved
and lastly, duration of the contact with the chemical (page 294). Also an important dependent on the
severity of the burn is by how deep the burn in question penetrates through the skin. This is
determined by the location of the burn, age of the victim, and the amount of burned area (page 293).
Chemical burns can destroy body tissue, depending on the extent of destruction including the severity
of the burn. However, chemical burns can also cause a high risk of infection in victims. Due to this

Definition Of Customary International Law
Within the scope of customary international law there are some varying norms that the international
law community must deal with, which can be broken down into three different categories from most
important to least important: 1) norms in which the international community allows no derogation,
these are known as peremptory norms or jus cogens, 2) norms that might allow for derogation, and 3)
norms that aren t binding but some might argue should be.
The classification of these customary norms is based off of both state practice and opinio juris. In
order to determine state practice the states may look towards each other and how they react in similar
scenarios. One debate surrounding this area is determining how many states need to sign off on an
action to determine that sufficient state practice is occurring. Two sides of the argument are the actual
number states versus the regionalization of the states. Opinio juris is defined as a state engaging in a
certain activity because they believe they are under legal obligation to act.
The idea of peremptory norms is older than modern international law itself (113). The idea of
peremptory norms stems from the belief that certain actions are so heinous that in order for these to be
prevented states shall not be allowed to derogate from adherence. The Vienna Convention on the Law
of Treaties shows the importance of peremptory norms in both Article 53 and 64. Article 53 states that
a treaty is void if at the time of its

The Cask Of Amontillado Symbolism Essay
Edgar Allan Poe s story The Cask of Amontillado possess a disturbingly eerie tone. An untrustworthy
man tells the story of his revenge; how he tricked his victim into a dark cellar and buried him alive.
All of these events symbolizes something greater, but the readers have to put the clues together. In The
Cask of Amontillado, the author illustrates how people will go to extreme measures for what they
desire using symbolism.
The Cask of Amontillado is a clever title Poe uses. Not only does the title represent the item that one
of the main characters wants, but also the character himself. The way amontillado is made, is the same
way Fortunato is characterized. Since the beginning of the story, it is established that Fortunato is an
alcoholic. Montresor finds him drunk and lures him into the catacombs to drink more alcohol. True
amontillado develops naturally, transforming through age; medium sherry, in contrast, is an
amontillado that has been sweetened and fortified with alcohol from the start. (Lewis) A refined
amontillado is made by mixing in more alcohol. Fortunato s true colors show when he accepts several
bottles of wine from Montresor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

6. Colourful Costumes
In the area of costume design, Cirque du Soleil has really raised the bar.
The traditional circus had costumes for each performer, but costumes and makeup were typically very
basic. On the other hand, Cirque du Soleil custom costumes are designed to contribute to the overall
theme of each individual show. Cirque du Soleil s costumes have fancy details, colorful decorations,
and even lights! For example, in the show Amaluna, 130 costumes were worn, made of 800 different
materials. And if that s not enough, in the show Varekai, 130 costumes were made over the course of
33,000 hours, and a team of 6 works 250 hours weekly to maintain those costumes.
In addition, Cirque du Soleil has very dramatic makeup for each performer and each segment of the
show. From my interview with a former Cirque du Soleil performer, Marin Debruyn, I learned that
Cirque du Soleil also makes molds of performer s faces to create 3D printed masks.

The Prisoner s Dilemma
This semester so far in Core 5, we have learned about the Prisoner s Dilemma. It is a situation in
which people each have options as to how to react to something. However, what is unique about this
decision, is that each person s decision is directly affected by the other person s decision, and vice
versa. The outcome of their reaction is dependent on what the other person decided to say. The popular
example is of two prisoners who each must separately decide on whether or not to confess to a crime.
Each prisoner has the choice as to confess to the crime or to deny their own involvement. This is just
an example, though, as the Prisoner s Dilemma can be applied to many different scenarios. As it

they had the right intentions but not the right methods. Think of Diana Sydney, Queen Anya, Dante
Wallace, Queen Nia. There were some less redeemable villains like Cage Wallace and there are a few
that are just downright unlikeable (remember Dr. Lorelei Tsing?). However, Pike takes unlikeable
villains to new dimensions. Nothing that the show has done has made him even a bit likeable. I want
him dead and the sooner he dies, the better it will be. His character comes off as a one dimensional
villain that only cares about killing Grounders. His argument that every Grounder is the same is
bullshit, and if he doesn t see that he must be blind. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What s interesting is that this episode revealed that ALIE can only be seen by those that take her pills.
However, this contradicts with what we saw in the previous episodes. In the premiere and episode 2,
Murphy saw ALIE without taking a pill. This episode showed that Pike couldn t see ALIE when he
was talking to Jaha. Also, Raven did not see her until after she had taken the pill. I am curious to see
how that works and how exactly that bag works that Jaha carries around with him. I do hope that
ALIE s storyline doesn t get too supernatural. It seemed like Raven s leg just miraculously healed. We
also saw that Jaha said to Otan to go the other side where ALIE would be waiting for him. I must
admit that the storyline has me intrigued

René Descartes Meditations
In Meditation Two of René Descartes Meditation on First Philosophy, he notes the sight of men
crossing the square. This observation is important as Descartes states, But what do I see aside from
hats and clothes, which could easily hide automata? Yet I judge them to be men. This is an important
realization as Descartes argues that instead of purely noticing the men through sight, it is actually
solely with the faculty of judgement, the mind, that perceives and concludes that the thing wearing a
hat and clothes are men. I argue that this view of the outside world by Descartes is incomplete as his
idea of I is faulty, as well as having a misunderstanding on the importance of the senses. In Meditation
One, Descartes shows that the

memory that are needed to build a lasting memory. Sensory memory is the shortest memory in the
shortest term memory element. One of the types of memory allows you to remember information
through the 5 senses. The brain will remember anything that happened from 1 second to 60 seconds
using the sensory part of your memory. An example of sensory memory is: I got hit in the head with a
purple yo yo. After sensory memory comes the short term memory. Short term memory acts as a
scratch pad for temporary recall. Short term memory holds small amounts of information. Anything
something that took place in front of your eyes for longer than 60 seconds, the short term memory
section of the brain will remember it. This section of your brain will allow you to recall that
information in the next few hours or days. An example of short term memory is: time on the clock 10

to gradually expand the interval between urinating. The older adult hopes to regain voluntary urinary

enough to preserve and protect countries seek to separate themselves. Both Catalonia and Scotland
have some rights to have autonomy, but are seeking to separate from their larger nations to better serve
the needs of their people and preserve their culture. Catalonia has been granted a great deal of control
over its own affairs, including transportation, commerce, culture and safety (Knowledge). Although
this may be the case Catalonia is financially dependent on Spain and does not have the legal right to

It was instead offered continued union with the UK, but with another name. It was offered the same
shoddy, unicameral devolved Parliament. The same bankrupt political parties. The same Head of
State; the same currency; the same ongoing treaties; the same rotten banking economic system
(Raeburn). Raeburn believes the status quo needs to be shaken and continuing the same practices are
not truly change. Many Scottish people understood this. Voting No as not truly a gage of whether
Scotland anted independence rather a rejection of continuing the same practices under a different
name. That is not true separation. For this reason Raeburn and other critics believe that the
independence vote will continue to fail until true change is sought after in order to create a thriving
separate country. There quite a few similarities between Scotland s failed attempt and Catalonia s filed
attempt at independence. The key factor for the both failing is economic hardship. Scotland accounts
for 8.4 percent of the UK population and 8.3 percent of the UK s total output. Under the current
spending formula Scotland receives about £31000 ($5000) more per capita than England. By one
calculation even if Scotland were to receive 90 percent of the North Sea oil revenue, something the

order to have a successful business opening and get the funds needed to ensure a business can operate
on daily one has to be able to show how and why they need money. A business starts off as just an idea
that one has, but once one can put their idea into action they can potentially turn it into a well thought

Feminism in Elizabeth Barrett Browning s Aurora Leigh Essay
Feminism in Elizabeth Barrett Browning s Aurora Leigh
In Aurora Leigh, Elizabeth Barrett Browning creates an independent, intelligent young woman. Barrett
Browning successfully demonstrates the difficult obstacles women had to overcome in the Victorian
period. There were preconceived ideas of what proper women were suppose to do with their life. Not
that this idea has completely been surmounted in our time. Barrett Browning though is optimistic
about the goals women can achieve. She wants to demonstrate to women that belief in themselves and
their dreams is possible and preferable to the standard.
The poem begins with Aurora Leigh s observations of her aunt. Her somewhat narrow forehead
braided tight/ As if for taming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of the mathematics, brushed with extreme flounce/ The circle of the sciences, because/ She misliked
women who are frivolous (404 407). Her aunt considered the learning of mathematics and science a
waste of time because a woman would have no chance to use them. She withheld any reading that
were considered improper. In effect Aurora Leigh was taught A general insight into useful facts 413).
Therefore a woman was taught enough facts that could prove useful in conversation. She was not
taught to think deeply and explore ideas for herself.
Her aunt also had her instructed in Spun glass, Stuffed birds, and modeled flowers in wax,/ Because
she liked accomplishments in girls (425 426). So in the narrow mind of her aunt s she considered the
ability to do crafts an accomplishment for women. After the list of Aurora Leigh s education is drawn
out, there is an interesting side bar. Barrett Browning adds By the way,/ The works of women are
symbolical./ We sew...producing what...at best, a cushion...and dream of something we are not... (455
462). She introduces the line subtlety but actually this is the sum of her belief. Women produce goods
that are trivial, not necessary in life. This affects the worth of the woman, not only in monetary value
but in their esteem. Therefore the value of women in society is low for what they produce is of little
worth.
Through this strict upbringing Aurora Leigh s personality persisted. At age twenty she

Weeping Shades of Cozened Indigo
Schizophrenia is present within 1.1% of people worldwide, regardless of economic, ethnic, or racial
background. Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental illness that is a culmination of many symptoms
related to mental illnesses, there is no cure. Holden is seen as an outsider but not entirely a pariah, but
he appears to be off in his behavior. In the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger,Holden
appears to have symptoms of schizophrenia such as delusions, lack of pleasure or interest in life, and
disorganized speech.
Ideas can be creative, they can be revolutionary, and sometimes they can be delusions leading
someone over a metaphorical cliff. A possible explanation for Holden s delusion is schizophrenia,
being that they are a symptom of the disorder. But for a symptom to attribute to a disorder, it has to be
prevalent enough. Holden clinging to his vision of being the catcher in the rye seems irrelevant at first,
but when that s all he d want to do all day (Salinger 173) one might question just how deep the roots
of his vision go. Holden was obsessed with a song that was actually a poem he mistook the wording
of. Then he took that idea and personified it in his own imagination as a literal interpretation. Finally,
he pursued the manifestation and strove to be a modern day catcher in the rye a protector of
innocence. As appointed catcher in the rye by

  • 2. Reflection Paper Search for Man s Meaning Reflection Paper: A Critical Book Review of Man s Search for Meaning Heather Urmanski Silver Lake College History 205 Instructor Diane Weiland August 19, 2012 Introduction Man s Search for Meaning, is a biography and the personal memoir of Victor Frankl s experience in a Nazi Concentration Camp. The book was initially published in 1946 in German and was then published in 1959 in English, under the title From Death Camp to Existentialism. Prior to World War II, Victor Frankl was a psychiatrist working in Vienna and then later was responsible for running the neurology department at a Jewish Hospital in Rothschild. In 1942 he and his family were arrested and deported. They were separated and sent to concentration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His book details many examples of his theory and how it has helped many people improve their life, survive tragedies, as well as documents how it kept him alive throughout three years of physical and mental suffering while imprisoned. He also discusses how to find the meaning in one s life as well as the tribulations that he and others went through once liberated. Author s Arguments Frankl believes several things, and he shares these theories with his readers. First of all; the basic concept of Logotherapy is that if one finds a purpose or a meaning in their life they can endure anything. He supports this many times over with specific examples. He was forced to dig trenches in freezing cold weather without adequate clothing and shoes. The shoes might be too tight causing pain and blisters, he may have no socks, or the shoes might have holes in them, allowing the ice and snow to get against his skin. He states that he got through these long, painful days by thinking about the beauty of nature or thoughts of his wife. He focused on the unlikely fact that his wife might be alive, giving him the will to live. Other times, while at another camp where he worked as the only doctor caring for 52 sick and dying patients, he himself was on the brink of starvation and typhus and he did not give up. He felt that it was his duty to care for these people, keep them comfortable and give them the best that he could at the time with minimal resources. There might have ... • 3. The Phrynosoma Hernandesi s Coloration Does the Phrynosoma hernandesi s coloration assist in camouflaging itself into the environment? Introduction: The issue of predation amoung most animals in not uncommon and has been the leading reasons for increased survival pressures. As a result many animals have evolved various different predatory strategies, these specific traits assist in increasing a species chances for survival. Phrynosoma hernandesi is a species of lizard in the family Phrynosomatidae, and is a highly variable species. Characteristics such as colour, pattern, and size vary based on its geographical location. Short horned lizards such as the Phrynosoma hernandesi, have settled all across North America, particularly in Saskatchewan and Alberta Canada as well as Montana, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico. The Phrynosoma hernandesi favours the desert environment and generally resides in the semi arid environments of North and Central America, much like a majority of short horned lizards that have settled throughout Mexico and along northeastern Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango. Through years of evolutionary adaptation Phrynosoma cornutum, which generally resides in the Sonoran desert, Colorado, Kansas, and Northern Mexico, have developed cryptic colouration (William 2009). Similarly, the colouration of the Phrynosoma hernandesi varies based on the geological location, its colouring ranges between grey, yellowish brown, and reddish brown. Letter From Birmingham Jail Summary Summary for Letter From Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the Letter From Birmingham Jail on April 16, 1963 and it began a huge transformation for the Civil Rights Movement. In his letter he is basically responding to an advertisement from the Birmingham news. He was extremely reasonable and modest all throughout his letter. He goes into great detail about how even though the protestors at the movement were breaking federal laws but, their actions obeyed the moral law. When he said this in his letter he was referring to St. Augustine because he says An unjust law is no law at all . (King Jr., para.14). Collaboration And Devolution Era 1) The Collaboration and Devolution Era arose from the public s dissatisfaction of how agencies were making decisions, which impacted their trust in the agencies, increasing complexity and uncertainty over issues, and learning how to manage ecosystems (Cestero, Era of Collaboration Devolution Lecture). The public was seeking seeking a cooperative and participatory approach to decision making in order to integrate conservation and community development (Cestero). 2) Traditional public involvement often means requiring a comment period of a certain length to allow the concerns of the public to be heard by the agencies, which supporters of collaboration say is inadequate and even counterproductive (Kyza Sousa). • 6. How Did Hannibal Dominate The Roman Army Hannibal Barca was a man bred for war. His ability to command a battlefield was unmatched during his day. During the Second Punic War, Hannibal led the Carthaginian army against the Roman Republic. He would march through Italy destroying the Roman legions battle after battle. His victories at Trebia and Trasimene were just preludes to the massacre that he would conduct in Southern Italy, at the Battle of Cannae. Rome had the best military of its time. They troops were drafted each year and any land owning citizen could be picked. Every man was trained in the art of war, to be ruthless and efficient on the battlefield. They were trained with pilum and gladus to kill their enemies. They fought in what is known has a Maniple Legion. Maniples were the small formations that made up the bigger battle lines. These smaller organizations trained together and became a coherent part of the Roman lines. The Roman camps were laid out so that the Maniples camped in the same order that they line for battle. Hasdrubal, Hannibal s brother, was leading the cavalry on the Carthaginian left. He led his force to obliterate the Roman cavalry on the Roman right wing by the river. • 7. Remember To Remember My Life I will always remember the Summer of 1973. It was special because my Dad took my sister, brother and I on vacation to visit my Aunt Fina who lived in Orange County while my Mom stayed home with my two younger sisters. It would be the first time I would feel like I belonged and the first and last time we would have Dad to ourselves even if it was for three short days. On Tuesday we packed the yellow 1957 Chevy Bel Air and off we went. The three of us were so excited and Dad who usually wanted everything quiet while he drove surprisingly let us sing and talk and of course we took naps in between. We arrived late afternoon at my Aunt Fina s house and she welcomed us and we greeted her and our cousins, Glenn and George. Uncle Glen was a lawyer and did not arrive until late. I do not remember seeing him until the next day. She fed us dinner and the only thing I remember about that dinner was the ranch dressing. It was the best salad dressing I had ever tasted and Aunt Fina bragged that it was homemade and that the secret was the buttermilk. Wednesday came and Auntie Fina already had breakfast ready for us. She made the best pancakes. After we ate we all got into the Chevy and went to Knott s Berry Farm. I remember we had a great time and Dad let us get souvenirs. My older sister got a little brown jar that was a bank with the Knott s Berry farm logo on it, my brother got a train whistle, and I got a stuffed Snoopy dog. The train ride was the best part. As the regulations explain at FAR 15.201(b), some of these benefits include an improved understanding of the Government s requirements for the potential suppliers, and also an improved understanding of a potential supplier s capabilities by the Government. Additionally, exchanges between Government and potential suppliers can help the Government firm up or finalize their acquisition plan and source selection strategy for a particular procurement by enabling them to determine things such as, proposed contract type, terms and conditions, and acquisition planning schedules, as well as, the feasibility of the requirement, including performance requirements, statements of work, and data requirements. • 12. Reader Response In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini The Kite Runner Reader Response Khaled Hosseini, the author of The Kite Runner, has a writing style unique to him in a way that the majority of his sentences are short and non complex. Although there are numerous words in Farsi, most are explained right away to limit confusion. You look khoshteep , Baba said. Handsome ( Hosseini 166). Hosseini incorporates an abundance of figurative language in his book, an example of this is repetition. The line, There is a way to be good again is said several times throughout the book to show its significance in the novel (Hosseini 2). Figurative language is extremely important because it adds a meaning and value that is much stronger than saying it differently. Hosseini uses many symbols in his novel. One, in particular, shows the loss of friendship between Amir and Hassan, the pomegranate tree. In the beginning, Amir and Hassan would go to the tree to read stories and eat pomegranates. After school, Hassan and I climbed its branches and snatched its bloodred pomegranates (Hosseini 27 28). After Hassan had been raped, Amir and Hassan had gone back to the tree but this time the loss of friendship starts to show through. When Amir throws pomegranates at Hassan, it is him trying to get Haasan to punish Amir for what he had done wrong. Hit me back! I spat. Hit me back, goddamn you ! I wished he would. I wished he d give me the punishment I craved, so maybe I d finally sleep at night (Hosseini 92). Amir needs the punishment he deserves so badly from the awful things he did and now wants to live up to. Once Amir goes back to visit his home in Kabul, he finds the pomegranate tree that once was a symbol of friendship, and now the loss of just that. Hassan said in his letter that the pomegranate tree hadn t borne fruit in years. Looking at the wilted, leafless tree, I doubted it ever would again (Hosseini 264). The pomegranate tree shows how during their friendship, the tree was beautiful and full of life. Now that Amir has betrayed Hassan and left him to be killed, the tree is now lifeless and no fruit to be eaten symbolizing the end of their relationship. Another symbol that is extremely important is the flying of kites. This is significant because it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Aquifer Depletion The High Plains Aquifer encompasses approximately 174,000 square miles and stretches from Texas to South Dakota (Fig. 1). This aquifer is also known as the Ogallala Aquifer due to the geologic formation that it lies above. The development of this aquifer along with glacial till produced through the retreat of glaciers during previous ice ages, has yielded a very productive region for farming. The High Plains Aquifer is a valuable natural resource for farmers within the area, but several factors have caused the depletion of this aquifer. Some of the factors that have caused the depletion include a slow rate of recharge, the overlying formation, and heavy pumping within the aquifer. For an aquifer to recharge quickly, the overlying formation must consist of a permeable and porous lithologic unit. These rock units will allow for water to easily pass through them and into the underlying aquifer for storage. Much of the sediment that makes up the aquifer consists of sand, silt, and gravel that were derived from runoff of the Rocky Mountains. Recharge is from precipitation, infiltration, and groundwater flow through the porous and permeable overlying lithologic unit to the aquifer. The High Plains Aquifer is situated within a semiarid climate producing a slower rate of recharge. Much of the Ogallala is located within an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sex Marriage And Same Sex Parental Adoption Intro to LGBT Studies Case Study Part 1: Historical Context Due September 22, 2017 The topics of same sex marriage and same sex parental adoption have been controversial and ongoing topics in recent years, which is a drastic change in mainstream society. People of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LBGT) community have had a difficult time in gaining visibility and equal civil liberties, one of which is marriage equality. Same sex couples have only recently been recognized under the law as legal candidates for marriage rights, and adoption is now an additional option; however, although the rights have been granted, there is still much more work to be done concerning the full benefits of same sex marriage and adoption rights. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The word lesbian first made an appearance in the works of Sappho, a Greek poet whose origins date back to seventh century BCE. A notable exception [to nearly all Greek literary production being written by men] was the poet Sappho, who lived in the seventh century BCE on the island of Lesbos (thus the word lesbian). / Many young, wealthy Greek women were sent to Lesbos to study the arts with Sappho. Much of Sappho s surviving poetry is love lyrics to these young women (Meem, Gibson, Alexander 2018). The birth of lesbianism being a derivative of Sappho s Lesbos makes Sappho the rightful creator. In a more modern context, the traditional societal views prohibited lesbian identifying women to be open, thus forcing them to conceal their true affections. Before the rise of the lesbian feminist movement in the early 1970 s, twentieth century women writers were generally intimidated into silence about the lesbian experiences in their lives. In their literature, male personae took the voice of their most auto biographical characters, and they were thus permitted to love other women (Faderman 1979). Faderman continues to explain how Sappho s island of Lesbos became a type of code in the vernacular in the time of Lady Mary Montagu; her love letters to a woman named Anne Wortley included illusions to the fictitious island and what it would be like to fancy ourselves in Lesbos ... • 17. Definition Of Customary International Law Within the scope of customary international law there are some varying norms that the international law community must deal with, which can be broken down into three different categories from most important to least important: 1) norms in which the international community allows no derogation, these are known as peremptory norms or jus cogens, 2) norms that might allow for derogation, and 3) norms that aren t binding but some might argue should be. The classification of these customary norms is based off of both state practice and opinio juris. In order to determine state practice the states may look towards each other and how they react in similar scenarios. One debate surrounding this area is determining how many states need to sign off on an action to determine that sufficient state practice is occurring. Two sides of the argument are the actual number states versus the regionalization of the states. Opinio juris is defined as a state engaging in a certain activity because they believe they are under legal obligation to act. The idea of peremptory norms is older than modern international law itself (113). The idea of peremptory norms stems from the belief that certain actions are so heinous that in order for these to be prevented states shall not be allowed to derogate from adherence. The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties shows the importance of peremptory norms in both Article 53 and 64. Article 53 states that a treaty is void if at the time of its ... An untrustworthy man tells the story of his revenge; how he tricked his victim into a dark cellar and buried him alive. All of these events symbolizes something greater, but the readers have to put the clues together. In The Cask of Amontillado, the author illustrates how people will go to extreme measures for what they desire using symbolism. The Cask of Amontillado is a clever title Poe uses. Not only does the title represent the item that one of the main characters wants, but also the character himself. The way amontillado is made, is the same way Fortunato is characterized. Since the beginning of the story, it is established that Fortunato is an alcoholic. Montresor finds him drunk and lures him into the catacombs to drink more alcohol. True amontillado develops naturally, transforming through age; medium sherry, in contrast, is an amontillado that has been sweetened and fortified with alcohol from the start. (Lewis) A refined amontillado is made by mixing in more alcohol. Fortunato s true colors show when he accepts several bottles of wine from Montresor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, what is unique about this decision, is that each person s decision is directly affected by the other person s decision, and vice versa. The outcome of their reaction is dependent on what the other person decided to say. The popular example is of two prisoners who each must separately decide on whether or not to confess to a crime. Holden is seen as an outsider but not entirely a pariah, but he appears to be off in his behavior. In the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Holden clinging to his vision of being the catcher in the rye seems irrelevant at first, but when that s all he d want to do all day (Salinger 173) one might question just how deep the roots of his vision go.
