Accounting Research and Theory: The age of neo empiricism
Michael Gaffikin, School of Accounting Finance, University of Wollongong
ABSTRACT The theorising in accounting prior to 1970 was rejected as not providing
sufficiently general theories. Informed by theories in economics and finance (and
other disciplines such as psychology) and with the aid of computers, attempts to
theorise accounting took a new direction. Large data collection and analysis
emphasized a purportedly more systematic empirical approach to developing theory.

As mentioned, the dominating characteristic was empiricism. It is neo (new)
because, although earlier research had relied on empiricism in that it sought to
establish theory from best practice, the emphasis after 1970 was on a more
systematic use of empirical evidence. This was largely made possible with the
availability of large financial databases to which sophisticated statistical techniques
were applied to test hypotheses. This, in turn, was greatly facilitated by the increasing
availability and use of computers.

All neo empirical accounting research has the underlying assumption of the
efficiency of markets the efficient markets hypothesis (EMH). It is referred to as an
hypothesis because despite more than forty years of research designed to test the
hypothesis all attempts to date have failed to confirm it. Therefore, consistent with
the generally accepted process of theory construction which states (simply) that a
theory is a confirmed hypothesis, it remains an hypothesis. The EMH emerged in
the 1960s from the work of researchers at the University of Chicago trained in

day in 1912 to break loose from her humdrum life by taking a job as governess in
Mexico. Once she arrives, she is immediately caught in the middle of the Mexican
revolution. Here, she meets the general, Tomas Arroyo, and the American author, the
old gringo. Harriet is described as a, quick, elegant, and a beautiful woman of thirty.

Robert W. Hamilton, a British archaeologist, carried out excavations against the north
wall of the Old City of Jerusalem almost 70 years ago from the years 1937 1938.
Hamilton began several test soundings in order to determine the age of the

last major reconstruction in the middle of the sixteenth century A.D by Suleiman the

willing to risk it all. The film The Wolf of Wall Street is centered on the life of
stockbroker and founder of the firm Statton Oakmont, Jordan Belfort. Belfort is the
son of two hardworking accountants and at a young age, lands an entry level job at
a top firm on Wall Street. When the firm is forced to close, Belfort settles for a new,
lesser job at an investment firm in Long Island and very easily utilizes his sales
skills to sell the worst stocks, penny stocks, to the perceived worst clientele, middle

The Civil War as one of the most infamous conflicts in American History. It was a
war borne from clashing ideologies and beliefs, and divided the nation by North and
South and brother against brother. The North believed in that a strong central
government was the best way to govern the nation. They supported the Republican
Party and wished to stop the spread of slavery to new states, and later in the war, the
abolition of it in its entirety. The South believed in the rights of states to create their
own laws and that the states should be more powerful than the central government.
They also supported the Democratic Party and, the largest cause of the war, believed

In 1850, a new law was passed known as the Fugitive Slave Law. This law was
passed in retaliation to the growing antislavery sentiment and the influx in
escaping slaves. It made it illegal to help escaping slaves anywhere in the United
States and caused escaped slaves to not attain freedom when entering a free state.
In 1857 in response to this law, Dredd Scott, a slave who entered the free territories
of Illinois and Wisconsin sued Sanford for his freedom. This case was taken all the
way to the Supreme Court where it was then thrown out. The Supreme Court
declared that Dred Scott did not have the right to sue since he was legally a piece
of property; furthermore, the Supreme Court did not stop there with their ruling and
declared that it was unconstitutional to ban slavery in anywhere in the United States
and that slaves could not be freed by entering free states; this also effectively undid
the Missouri Compromise by giving slave states an unfair advantage. This decision
outraged many Northerners who had previously been moderates capable of
swinging either way towards the Republican Party giving the party they needed to
have a Republican president elected. Finally, with the election of Lincoln to office,
the South believed that it was only a matter of time that slavery was abolished and

Question #1: Positive Influences in the boys lives: Mothers, Grandmothers, Mr.

Fathers, parental relationships, family on drugs and bad crowds of friends.

Parents played a big part in their childhoods, just like in everyone s, but their
parents would constantly argue or one would end up leaving their mothers to
strive for them. Question #5: The environment these boys grew up in was certainly
not the best. The boys really enjoyed school but pushed that away to fit in or just
out of pure carelessness. They all lived in the projects which had a negative impact
