Essay on The Importance of Sports
Think of society as a living organism which every part of it contributes to its survival. This view is the
functionalist perspective, which every parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability.
Functionalist regard sports as an almost religious institution that uses ritual and ceremony to reinforce
the common values of a society.
In 1968, Robert Merton made an important distinction between manifest and latent functions.
Manifest functions of institutions are open, stated, conscious functions that involve intended,
recognized, consequences of an aspect of society. Taking sports as an example, manifest function of
sports is to keep people stay fit and healthy. It is an objective that widely and well known by everyone.

In other words, sports could stay us strong, good, and feeling well.
Apart from that, sports serve as a safety valve for both participants and spectators, who are allowed to
shed tension and aggressive energy in a socially acceptable way. It provides them an alternative way
to consume their excess energy and spend their leisure time. Thus, avoid them from being involved in
activities that will go against the norms. It is better to do something useful than getting involve in
terrible things like drug trafficking, drug abuse, illegal car racing or prostitution.
Moreover, sports would be perfect as a choice for recreation. We can hang out with friends and family
in a meaningful way. It would not be too costly, since badminton racket and shuttlecocks are
affordable. Besides that, since they could to be found in stores, it would not be a problem or a
hardship to get the related sports equipment. Practicing sports as a recreation would help in building
up the relationship among friends and family members. Since, badminton is a play that could be even
performed by kids. It is suitable for a family recreation. Parents could enjoy the time spent with their
children. It is certainly a better choice of relaxing rather than shopping or fooling around and waste
time. No doubt, it

The Suspense In The Sixth Sense Essay
The Suspense In The Sixth Sense
The Sixth Sense is a psychological thriller. It follows a very simple set of conventions that are
associated with all psychological thrillers. The hero or anti hero is always present in psychological
thrillers and is there for the audience to relate to. Vulnerable characters are often depicted as small
children. Children are seen as innocent and un knowing, it is easy for the audience to be aware of what
the children are going through as they were all one once. Suspense is always built up with dramatic
and scary music. Using this convention allows the audience time to realise that something is going to
happen. When the audience views a psychological thriller they ... Show more content on

This convention is particularly important when trying to show suspense. Filmmakers are always very
happy to accept psychological thrillers because they are usually always popular e.g. The Thing,
Scream Trilogy, Alien and Vertical Limit.
The Sixth Sense is a psychological thriller about a young boy who can see ghosts and the doctor who
is helping him. As the movie progresses it is able to show why the doctor is helping the boy and why
the child can see the ghosts. The Sixth Sense was a huge success for a director who had not been
marked as one of particular importance. M. Night Shyamalan had previously only directed short films,
but had started to come into the mainstream with his second feature length film Wide Awake. The
Sixth Sense had a huge box office success all over the world and after being nominated for 6 Academy
Awards, it won two Best Supporting Actor (Haley Joel Osment) and Best Screenplay.

As Hurricane Sandy approached New York on October 28, 2012, and President Obama declared a
state of emergency for the region, federal state and city authorities moved into emergency mode. The
president directed Fugate, administrator of FEMA, to make all resources available to affected states
and responders. The Department of Energy worked with FEMA to provide assistance to electric
industries and potential power restoration efforts. Governor Cuomo ordered the Metropolitan
Transport Authority to shut down by Sunday 7pm. Most bridges and tunnels were shut down, along

In all, 811,000 customers in NYC and Westchester lost power in the storm, with an additional 942,000
on Long Island. In total, 17% of New York City s landmass was flooded.
During the storm, NYC emergency service teams rescued over 2,200 people stranded by floodwaters.
Businesses, buildings and vital infrastructure had been destroyed. In immediate response, the local
NYC Food Truck Association and the Mayor s Fund to Advance NYC distributed more than 278,000
meals from 32 food trucks to people in shelters. Restoring power took anywhere from 4 days in parts
of NYC to 3 months in the Rockaways and cleanup efforts included removal of over 700,000 tons of
debris and 20,000 downed trees and limbs. By February 2012, local responses by the city also
included distributing 166,000 blankets, 1 million water bottles and 3.6 million meals with the help of
the National Guard. Nonprofits played a huge role in recovery efforts as well, more efficient to many
than the federal government in reaching the hardest affected areas. Besides the efforts of the American
Red Cross, nonprofits such as Occupy Sandy provided efforts of 7,000 volunteers to cook and
distribute more than 15,000 meals for weeks after the storm.
On December 7th, President Obama proposed a $60.4 billion emergency funding bill to help finance
recovery efforts. This bill was held up in the house of representatives as fiscal conservatives looked to

Anatomical Script of the Squat Technique Essay
Introduction
The squat technique is described as the King of all exercises (Bompa, 2002) as it is an effective
exercise that works a variety of muscles including the gluteals, hamstrings, quadriceps and
abdominals. This report focused on the lower limb muscles only. Understanding different types of
movement is important for sport and exercise to help rehabilitate injuries of athletes. Coaches and
trainers may find understanding the squat a good way to prevent injuries as it is an excellent way to
build the muscles of the lower limbs.
The four main phases of the squat technique are the starting phase, the downward phase, the holding
phase and the upward phase. The aim of this report was to fully understand the squat technique. This

The hamstrings contract eccentrically acting as the synergist and help the flexion of the hip to occur.
The Rectus femoris of the quadriceps contract eccentrically to help flex the hip, they are co
contracting with the hamstrings. The hip flexors may contract rapidly to stabalise the body on the way
down if there is a loss of balance (Wynsberghe et al., 1995). The adductor longus, adductor brevis and
adductor Magnus contract isometrically to prevent adduction and abduction. The Sartorius muscle
contracts eccentrically to cause flexion and abduction at the knee. The sartoris originates from the
anterior superior iliac spine and inserts onto the tibia. The adductor and abductor muscles at the hip
joint contract to prevent movement that may cause injury (Tortora and Derrickson, 2009).
Knee
On the downward phase flexion occurs at the knee, stopping at about 90 °. Both quadriceps, acting as
the agonist to flex the knee, and hamstrings, which mainly stabilizes the knee, act as an antagonistic
pair and co contract eccentrically to allow flexion. The hamstring is also acting as the synergist for the
hip joint (Tortora and Derrickson, 2009). The Sartorius acts as the synergist and also contracts
eccentrically to cause flexion at the knee (Wynsberghe et al., 1995).
Ankle
On the downward phase dorsiflexion occurs at the ankle, the tibialis anterior acts as the synergist in
this movement and contracts concentrically (Seeley et al., 2003). The extensor halluces

Round Trip To America Summary
In Round Trip to America: The Immigrants Return to Europe 1880 1930, Mark Wyman argues that
many new immigrants that migrated to America from 1880 1930 never intended to make America a
permanent residence and many of them returned home to their native countries. He claims that this
phenomena is important to the history of American Immigration and is important to the histories of the
home land in which the immigrants returned to. In his book, Wyman explores some key ideas such as
the reason immigrants decided to voyage to a new land, across the ocean, to what was known as the
land of milk and honey only to return to their small, and a lot of the time rural village. He also
discusses American labor movement and what impact that had on ... Show more content on

For some they returned having never reached this goal, for others they ended up staying in America,
but for many of these immigrants they did reach their goal and after doing so, returned home. These
immigrants were temporary migrants that had caught America fever . (p. 16) Temporary migration had
been going on before this time, but it wasn t until the invention of the steam engine that migrant
workers began to voyage across the seas. Many of these poor European s that migrated to the United
States did so to make money to go back home and buy land. Not all of them had this goal, some saved
money to start up or buy a business. Whether they were going back to buy land or expand land they
already had, or they were going to use the money to start a business these remigrants all had one thing
in common. Wyman writes of the Hungarian emigrant s experiences; they would soon return with the
money made overseas to make a better life for themselves in the environment they were attached to,
the place where they wanted to live. (p. 49). Because many of these European immigrants only stayed
in America a short time many native born Americans began to have hostilities toward these new
immigrants in terms of the American Labor Movement, assimilation politics and nativist s movements.

potential risk involved in confronting this type of conflict, Gruwell used the situation to create an
ongoing dialogue among her students, many of whom were plagued by violence, poverty, and despair

incident a teachable moment, Gruwell challenged her students in a way that they had never been

Discussing Drug Legalization
Drugs are bad, mkay. That s what we ve come to learn from Mr. Mackey in South Park (Ike s Wee
Wee). While that is known, what is the best way to combat drug use in society today? It is true the
government is spending billions of dollars on the War on Drugs, but if they were to be legalized would
that be replaced with money being spent on healthcare due to drug related incidents, or drug treatment
programs? It is true that a large amount of crime and the prison population are drug related offenders,
but would that reduce with drug legalization or would we not see any difference? It is true that there is
the pro and con side of this debate, but if drugs were to be legalized what sanctions should be set, if
any? It is true that Portugal has decriminalized drugs, but will their experience be a good example of
what would come to be if the US were to do the same? Both sides of the debate have a hopeful view
of what will ultimately lead us into the betterment of tomorrow. The issue regarding all drugs being
legalized has many facets with positive and negative impacts that make you question where you truly
stand on this controversial matter.
When it comes to discussing drug legalization it is important to understand why drugs were initially
criminalized and the effects they have on the individual, families and society as a whole. Most drugs
were actually once used medicinally, legally. Amphetamine was given to World War II soldiers to
combat fatigue and prescribed after the war

Persepolis Literary Analysis
In the graphic novel, Persepolis , Marjane Satrapi brings to light the devastations in her life in Tehran
during the Iranian revolution of 1973 as well as the eight year war with Iraq. Forced upon Marji was a
life surrounded by Middle Eastern conflicts and policies that became unavoidable. Iran had strict
government policies, military forces, and radicalists that punished those that protested against Iran s
rejection of western influence. After Satrapi and her parents came back from vacation, her grandma
informs them about their country being at war with Iraq. Because most of what is happening is seen
from innocent point of view during Satrapi s life, the pain and violence expressed throughout the
novel is based on the suffering that occurred in Iran. Among those who suffered during this time are
the children, for they suffered the most out of all those that lived at that time. While children are often
portrayed as innocent, the civil war has tainted the purity of their childhood innocence by forcing them

actions of those around them. Not only that but this pain and suffering once experienced as children
have also resonated in the adult lives of these children as well. Not only did such tragic events create
physical, mental, and emotional trauma on the children s lives, but it also created future pains and
sufferings that these children would soon have to encounter in their adult lives. The violence and
attacks against those that chose to protest and resist the government in any way whether it be a comic,
expressing opinions against the government, or rejecting clothing policies, could lead to an arrest and

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Intermodal...
Intermodal steel shipping containers have been put to use for various things when they no longer cross
the high seas. Generally retired shipping containers are used as storage containers or are turn into
building construction site mobile offices. A current trend gaining strength in the architectural
community is transforming steel intermodal containers into the basis for homes and light business
construction applications.
Fortunes of a construction development using an innovative approach are influenced by the research
done at the front end of the project. Here we will take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of
implementing shipping containers as part of your building.

The intermodals will examine containers and condemn them if broken welds, twisted frames, or pin
holes are identified. For use in construction, some issues could be less significant than others.
Handling
The size and weight of the containers will require them to be placed by the crane or forklift.
Traditional brick block and lumber construction materials are commonly moved by hand
Chemicals
A container can hold a wide variety of freight while in its working life. Spills or contamination might
have happened on the inside surfaces and will have to be cleaned before habitation. Ideally, the paint
on every internal surface should be removed to bare metal and re painted with a non toxic paint
product. In addition, chemicals released from paint and sealants used in manufacture of the shipping
container might be harmful.
Temperature Humidity Extremes
Steel is a conductor of heat. Containers used for human occupancy in an area with extreme
temperature variations will need to be better insulated than most brick, block or wood structures. In
temperate climates, moist interior air condenses against the steel; rust will form unless the steel is well
sealed and insulated.

The Athletic Performance Of One Athlete Essay
Understanding how and why the athletic performance of one athlete might be better than another
athlete during a sprinting event but, alternatively, worse during an endurance event is multifaceted.
Factors such as body composition, muscle characteristics, energy availability, substrate utilization,
exercise demands, and prior training all play an important role in an individuals ability to participate
in a specific physical activity. Take for example two athletes, Runs Like a Deer (RLD) and Slow
Turtle (ST), running in the New York City Marathon. Although both athletes will be running on the
same day under the same environmental conditions their physiological make up, their ability to access
and breakdown energy substrate utilization, and the way in which both athletes trained prior to the
race will alter how both RLD and ST will handle the stress of a 26.2 mile run.
The following paper, which will explore why these two marathon runners can be expected to
experience the New York City Marathon in two completely different ways, will compare and contrast
how the above factors impact the athletic performance of both athletes. In order to clearly compare
and contrast the underlying causes of why RLD and ST will perform differently during the marathon
this paper will (1) outline the different metabolic pathways used during physical activity for adenosine
triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, (2) discuss the relationship between athletic performance, muscle
characteristics and athletic

This act of the bank has been criticised as back door funding which will be examined in light of the
goals of the bank below.
2.2. The World Bank
The World Bank is composed of five organizations run by member countries. It provides technical and
financial assistance to developing countries. In connection with this, the bank has the objectives of
eradicating extreme poverty by 2030. However, it has been pointed out that, the bank s commitment
towards environmental protection is not practical. This comment relates to the case at hand, as the
bank provided funds to the construction the lines transmitting power to neighbouring countries;
although, the project has been criticised for its human rights and environmental concerns. This is an
action which has been criticised from the view point of its safeguard policy whereby the bank should
focus on infrastructure development and not in profit making given the government of Ethiopia plans
to export half of the power generated to Kenya. Moreover, the agenda of the government of Ethiopia
in exporting electric power, where only 26.56% of the population in the country have access to electric
power, should not have been supported by the World Bank. In addition to this the bank s goal of
eradicating extreme poverty is questionable where it is funding a project in which nearly half a million
people could be exposed to starvation.

Social Functionalism
Functionalism was the prevailing branch of western Human science until the 1960s since when it has
been progressively reprimanded by sociologists favoring distinctive sociological points of view.
Functionalists contend that social orders comprise of between related social foundations, for example,
schools, broad communications, political frameworks, the Congregation and the family each of which
contribute emphatically to the support of soundness of society in general. That is: these establishments
are said to be useful for social orders all in all. Extensively talking it is accepted by functionalists that
social orders work in light of a legitimate concern for the greater part of their individuals with the goal
that there is no purpose behind key clash in the public eye. Rather there is a high level of accord that
social orders are composed proficiently and moderately decently. The primary Functionalist scholars
of the family are G P Murdock and Talcott Parsons. Murdock contended on the premise of his studies
that the atomic family was an all inclusive social establishment and that it existed generally in light of
the fact that it satisfied four essential capacities for society : the sexual, conceptive, monetary and

American Intervention, Chile, And Augusto Pinochet
American Intervention, Chile, Augusto Pinochet After World War II, the United States emerged as a
world power. However, with this new power and hegemony status, came the threat of being overtaken
and being replaced as the dominant nation. One threat that the United States faced was the rise of
Communism. The US feared the spread of Communism in other nations, even in Latin America. One
country where the US intervened to stop the spread of Communism is Chile. In 1970, Salvador
Allende, a Marxist and a member of a joint Communist Socialist coalition, was elected to the
presidency over the incumbent Eduardo Frei, who had the support of the US. Since the US was

It was what the US was waiting for. The time had come to make other nations take notice. In response
to all of the rising tensions, the US established the Monroe Doctrine in 1823. It established neutrality
of the US in terms of European foreign policy affairs, but at the same time, prohibited the European
countries from colonizing any regions in the Western Hemisphere and stated, any attempt on their part
to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety (Hastedt,
12). At the time, many nations in the Europe either dismissed or did take notice of the importance of
this decree by the United States. With this official document, the national interest of the US was made
clear, but it would not have to be enforced and modified until almost a century later (Nester, 86 87).
Another way the United States protected its interests in the international system was through the
Roosevelt Corollary. This addition to the Monroe Doctrine established the power of the US to police
nations in the Western Hemisphere, especially when the governments, or heads of power, of these
nations are not able to maintain order (Hastedt, 12). Through this amendment of the doctrine, the US
was given a bigger sphere of influence in Latin America, and ultimately, the world. These acts of
intervention in other countries were implemented through the use of the military and economic
resources and it was

individuals for the Financial times, demonstrates distinct perspectives on the most efficient method to
approaching an obstacle in one s career. Lynda Gratton and Erik Brynjolfsson believe that one must

Dangers Of Being A Police Officer
When one is thinking about a career in law enforcement there is a lot to consider. The job can be
stressful and come with a lot of dangerous situation. Being a police officer can be a very rewarding
job and can make you have a sense of purpose. Police officers can be put into dangerous situation very
quickly, so they have to be able to think quickly on their feet. One may become a police officer for the
sense of reward, but it comes with a lot of stress and dangers.
Policeman can have a stressful job and sometimes it gets in the way of their lives away from work.
According to Patrolman Michael Anderson (2017), he loves his job. One of the many things that he
said he loved about his job was that he loved trying to make a positive impact in ... Show more content

Without incorporating some type of stress reliever the job may become overwhelming and can lead to
serious health problems. The majority of police officers are men and a small percentage are women.
This field is mostly dominated by men and has been for many years. According to University of San
Diego (2017), talks about how women can have a positive effect in this field. When dealing with sex
assaults the female victim may not want to talk to a male this is where the female police officer may
have a positive impact. Many women who are looking may face a problem with equality when trying
to find a job. Most law enforcement departments are looking for physically fit and upper body strength
and sometimes there is a stereotypes of women being weak; however, that is not always the case.
Studies have found that women can make a positive impact on the community. In the beginning of the
semester we were required to take a career test, my results were that I tested high in public safety. I
think this is true, it goes along with the career that I plan on going into. Taking this test just made me
realize that it is the right career for me.
In conclusion, becoming a police officer is a big decision and is a lot to consider. The job can be
dangerous and come with a lot of stress; however it can be very rewarding. When first becoming a
police officer it may be difficult to adjust to work and home life, but it can be managed.

The Advantages Of Database Management Systems
Assignment 1
Matthew Fisher
May 15, 2016
Part 1: Database Concepts
Topic 1: The Advantages of Database Management Systems
A database system would offer the innkeepers several advantages over the flat file system, including
enforced data integrity, minimized effort to adapt data into usable information, and abstraction.
Storing data in a flat file system, as the innkeepers do, and accessing the data directly pose problems
of data integrity. Anomalous data could easily arise if the innkeepers update a record in one file, but
do not take care to update related records in other files. Where data are kept in multiple, separate files,
but have a conceptual relationship to each other, a file system is of limited use compared to a database
management system (DBMS). A DBMS ensures that relationships between entities are enforced.
By way of example, a GUEST entity might have a GUEST_ID attribute that appears in multiple
locations (e.g. a RESERVATIONS entity). In the file system model, the innkeepers may choose to
store addresses of guests in both GUEST and RESERVATION files in order to quickly access address
information while booking reservations. If the address is updated in one place, but not the other, this
results in a data anomaly, where the address attributes for a guest do not agree. A well designed
database using a DBMS could circumvent this issue by storing no guest information in the
RESERVATION table other than GUEST_ID. With this relationship, guests addresses can still

Diverticulitis
Diverticular disease has two separate manifestations. The subtle signs and symptoms of diverticulosis
are important to understand because many people who have this problem are asymptomatic, but often
this diverticular disease can lead to a more serious condition known as diverticulitis. In diverticulosis,
there are diverticula present, but they do not cause any symptoms. In diverticulitis, which will be
discussed in detail, the diverticula are inflamed which can lead to other serious consequences for the
patient (Gramse, 1983). Diverticulitis is a bugling protrusion of a mucous membrane through the wall
of the colon (Marrs, 2006). These saclike or pouch protrusions have the potential to cause
inflammation, obstruction, infection, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fifteen percent of the remaining patients develop symptoms of their diverticulosis, while the
remaining five percent develop diverticulitis. The symptoms of diverticulosis are often hard to
differentiate and determine because they are often nonspecific symptoms, such as simple abdominal
pain that is relieved by moving their bowels (Marrs, 2006). Once inflammation occurs, the
diverticulosis is progressed to diverticulitis. This inflammation occurs from the large number of
bacteria that target the areas of weakened gastrointestinal wall and combine with undigested foods. It
is still unknown today why some diverticula became inflamed while others do not. There are some
theories surrounding this issue that states the inflammation occurs only when the erosion of the colon
wall is so bad that the body s immune system is unable to protect such a large, disrupted area. In some
cases, the inflammation gets so bad and infection co exists. This combination can result in the
enlargement of the infection, allowing it to extend into the abdomen and become peritonitis when it
infects the lining of the abdomen (Unknown, 2010). Diverticulitis is often classified as either
uncomplicated and mild or complicated and chronic. Regardless of the classification of the disease,
pain is the main symptom. Since diverticulitis occurs most often in the Sigmoid colon, the pain
associated with diverticulitis occurs most often in the lower, left quadrant of

The Importance Of Self-Limiting Beliefs
We all have self limiting beliefs in one way or another. However, if we want to be successful we need
to learn to let go of these beliefs; beliefs like denial and resistances. Many of these self limiting beliefs
result from stories that we have created in our mind. When bad things happens we tend to defend, over
rationalized or protect ourselves as part of our survival instinct. Unfortunately these kinds of behaviors
keep us from moving forward. Do you make excuses for procrastinating? Do you blame others for
your lower performance at work? Are you blaming your excessive weight on your genetics? If so, it s
time to learn how to make some mental adjustments so that you can really enjoy your life and
experience a much more abundant and fulfilling life. Abundant and prosperous people face the same
difficulties and discomforts that the rest of us do but they have learned how to take appropriate actions
to avoid negative consequences. The basic principle to learn is to take responsibility for your life. It is
up to us to be successful, overcome challenges and deal with drawbacks. Sometimes there are things
out of our control, but we can choose to acknowledge this situation, understand the red flags, find a
detour, keep moving and take positive action. This sometimes implies that we have to take risks. Why
denial is the number one self limiting obstacle? Denial means to hide or ignore that we are facing a
problem or dealing with challenges. Denial provides a set of myths and

Essay on Acid in Soda

The Quantitative Determination of an Acid in

Methods: Two sodas containing citric acid were investigated in this experiment. Each soda was
titrated using one of the two experimental methods. These methods are the traditional titration and the
modern titration. Carbonic acid was already removed from the soda by boiling it. Both of the two
different titration methods use the same basic set up. Firstly, the buret must be cleaned thoroughly
with tap water. While cleaning the buret, it is also checked to make sure there are no leaks. The ring
stand is then set up with a buret clamp and the cleaned buret placed ... Show more content on

The device stores the entered data and records it on a chart. This process of titration was repeated two
more times for a total of three accurate titrations. The data stored in the device was then transferred to
a computer and saved. The charts and data collected can be found on the last page. The volume of
NaOH used to reach the equivalence point was calculated for each of the three titrations. The
equivalence point was found graphically. Using the volume of NaOH and the molarity of NaOH, the
moles of NaOH were calculated. Using the volume of the soda used, the molarity of citric acid was
found. Then the mean and standard deviation of the molarity of citric acid was calculated.
Results:
In the traditional titration, the recorded data is shown in the following chart:
Table 1: | Volume of soda | Volume of NaOH | RatioNaOH:soda | MolesNaOH | MolesCitric acid |
MolarityCitric acid | Titration1 | 40.00mL | 19.00mL | .475 | 8.85* 10^ 4 | 2.95* 10^ 4 | 7.375*10^ 3 |

From the data in Table 1, the mean and standard deviation was calculated for the molarity of citric
acid:

Obasan, by Joy Kogawa Essay
Obasan, by Joy Kogawa Today, society has become a boisterous world of communication. From
telephone conversations to live Internet chat and e mail, the world has never before been quite so in
touch. In the novel Obasan, by Joy Kogawa, Naomi Nakane does not have technology to
communicate. Instead, she faces the dilemma of communicating at all. From her family, Naomi is
shown the many faceted truths of speech and communication. From strong, silent Obasan, to stubborn,
resolute Aunt Emily, Naomi finds that one can correspond with others through silence as well as
through speech. As a child, Naomi spends much of her life in non communicative silence, only to help
further the distance between herself and her mother. As Naomi grows ... Show more content on

Unfortunately, for the quiet Naomi, Emily also believes that in order to be at peace with your past you
must stand up and yell at those at fault for reconciliation. Emily shows that her beliefs remain
contingent upon facts, and that everyone needs to be on the same page before healing can begin.
It matters to get the facts straight...Reconciliation can t begin without mutual recognition of the facts,
she said.
Facts? [said Naomi]
Yes, facts. What s right is right. What s wrong is wrong. Health starts somewhere. (Obasan 219)
Naomi cannot comprehend the angle with which her aunt approaches life.
While Naomi may believe reconciliation is in order, she is only discouraged when she looks to see
where speech has placed her Aunt Emily. If Aunt Emily with her billions of letters and articles and
speeches, her tears and her rage, her friends and her committees if all that couldn t bring contentment,
what was the point (Obasan 50). Naomi becomes more and more frustrated when she sees the futile
efforts of her Aunt. Albeit, she does believe that what her Aunt is doing is important for her Aunt, she
cannot see the use if the results of such hard laborious tasks go for naught.
All of Aunt Emily s words, all her papers, the telegrams and petitions, are like scratchings in the

Argumentative Essay On Sesame Street And Medusa
Furthermore, in June 2017, Sesame Street introduced a new female character named Redusa. Redusa
is passionate about keeping the Earth clean, and she uses her magic wand to recycle ( The Recycling
Fairy ). I find Redusa s name ironic because it rhymes with Medusa. However, I believe, Sesame
Street, provided a twist to Redusa s name because her sole purpose is to heal the Earth, contrary to
Medusa who became a monster by insulting Athena, the Greek God of War. In other words, unlike
Medusa, Redusa is in control of her destiny. Redusa s independence teaches girls the importance of
preserving Mother Earth, while simultaneously emphasizing women s freedom. Sesame Workshop has
also worked to be more inclusive of the LGBT+ community in recent years. The screenwriters
decision to incorporate a transgender Muppet on the show mirrors the gradual changes that have
progressively taken place within the framework of feminism. Chip Day writes, Sesame Street for the
2017 season will include a transgender character whose project name is Brunny. He will be a rabbit
like animal who spent many years homeless, but through the help of others, he manages to get back on

For instance, Sesame Workshop s CEO s have all been white men, and such inequality translates to
Sesame Street because they owned the show. Sesame Workshop also includes biases in Sesame Street
by limiting the number of racially diverse Muppets and humans in the show. For example, Osvaldo,
the first male bilingual monster in the program, and Segi barely made appearances. As an Afro Latina
mother, it was infuriating to find out that Segi was nameless for two years. Sesame Workshop s
decision to leave Segi without a name, painfully reminded me of what happened during slavery when
European colonialists forced Africans to lose their identity and reclaim a new one, for Africans to

Theme Of Greasy Lake
Greasy Lake is a short story written by T.C Boyle. The short story mostly focuses on three nineteen
year old boys. The three of the boys went one night on a summer vacation in an area close to a shiny
and muddy lake. The teenagers were looking for trouble on a summer evening and end of finding it. In
the story at the author tells the reader, that it was a time when it was good to be bad. But the story
shows that the three boys are truly lost. The story shows the reader the changing of time in culture that
these teenagers want to be a part of. Even though, they lack to leave the comforts of their upper

When the guys girl gets out of the car they attempt to rape her, that shows how weak they actually are.
Many times, in society young people think they have it all under control, they have it figured out even
though they don t. During these teen phases, they try to experience many things. such as drugs,
drinking, and sexual exploration and become involved in various mischievous activities. It is about the
coming of adulthood. It is no longer trying to be like them, but copying one. The three friends are not
as bad as they pretend to be. Boyle gives them an opportunity to rape, but got interrupted because they
wouldn t have done it anyways they were to scared. The author symbolizes the water as transition and
spirituality, the lake is symbolized as the elusive badness the boys want so badly. The narrator notices
that none of them are as bad as they try to act. After that night the narrator realizes he cannot make it
in that life, rather the narrator wants to go to the safety and security of his home and parents.
Throughout the story many bad decisions were being made because they couldn t handle themselves
whether they were drunk or sober and it caused a lot of trouble and problems for these young men. We
sometimes forget to make the right decision and sometimes is hard to make the right decision when
you are hanging out with the wrong people and wrong set of minds of wanting to be bad or revel
because other people are doing so. Greasy

Horror Genre Essay
The criteria in the Horror Genre essay applies to other stories in the Thrill Of Horror unit by the
source of the horror, if it comes from inside or outside the character, or if something in general goes
wrong. Some people like to define horror by its subjects. For example, if there are any monsters, a
parallel universe somewhere out there, if something is wrong inside the character like a disease or
sickness, or maybe some type of demonic force outside the characters control. Others like to describe
horror by how it is organized in the story, like how the story is structured or written, and how the plot

The Rectus femoris of the quadriceps contract eccentrically to help flex the hip, they are co contracting with the hamstrings. The adductor longus, adductor brevis and adductor Magnus contract isometrically to prevent adduction and abduction. The Sartorius muscle contracts eccentrically to cause flexion and abduction at the knee. The sartoris originates from the anterior superior iliac spine and inserts onto the tibia. The adductor and abductor muscles at the hip joint contract to prevent movement that may cause injury (Tortora and Derrickson, 2009). Knee On the downward phase flexion occurs at the knee, stopping at about 90 °. Both quadriceps, acting as the agonist to flex the knee, and hamstrings, which mainly stabilizes the knee, act as an antagonistic pair and co contract eccentrically to allow flexion. Round Trip To America Summary In Round Trip to America: The Immigrants Return to Europe 1880 1930, Mark Wyman argues that many new immigrants that migrated to America from 1880 1930 never intended to make America a permanent residence and many of them returned home to their native countries. He claims that this phenomena is important to the history of American Immigration and is important to the histories of the home land in which the immigrants returned to. In his book, Wyman explores some key ideas such as the reason immigrants decided to voyage to a new land, across the ocean, to what was known as the land of milk and honey only to return to their small, and a lot of the time rural village. For some they returned having never reached this goal, for others they ended up staying in America, but for many of these immigrants they did reach their goal and after doing so, returned home. These immigrants were temporary migrants that had caught America fever . Many of these poor European s that migrated to the United States did so to make money to go back home and buy land. Not all of them had this goal, some saved money to start up or buy a business. Whether they were going back to buy land or expand land they already had, or they were going to use the money to start a business these remigrants all had one thing in common. Wyman writes of the Hungarian emigrant s experiences; they would soon return with the money made overseas to make a better life for themselves in the environment they were attached to, the place where they wanted to live. (p. 49). • 9. Discussing Drug Legalization Drugs are bad, mkay. That s what we ve come to learn from Mr. Mackey in South Park (Ike s Wee Wee). While that is known, what is the best way to combat drug use in society today? It is true the government is spending billions of dollars on the War on Drugs, but if they were to be legalized would that be replaced with money being spent on healthcare due to drug related incidents, or drug treatment programs? It is true that a large amount of crime and the prison population are drug related offenders, but would that reduce with drug legalization or would we not see any difference? It is true that there is the pro and con side of this debate, but if drugs were to be legalized what sanctions should be set, if any? It is true that Portugal has decriminalized drugs, but will their experience be a good example of what would come to be if the US were to do the same? Both sides of the debate have a hopeful view of what will ultimately lead us into the betterment of tomorrow. The issue regarding all drugs being legalized has many facets with positive and negative impacts that make you question where you truly stand on this controversial matter. When it comes to discussing drug legalization it is important to understand why drugs were initially criminalized and the effects they have on the individual, families and society as a whole. Most drugs were actually once used medicinally, legally. Amphetamine was given to World War II soldiers to combat fatigue and prescribed after the war ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. The Athletic Performance Of One Athlete Essay Understanding how and why the athletic performance of one athlete might be better than another athlete during a sprinting event but, alternatively, worse during an endurance event is multifaceted. Factors such as body composition, muscle characteristics, energy availability, substrate utilization, exercise demands, and prior training all play an important role in an individuals ability to participate in a specific physical activity. Take for example two athletes, Runs Like a Deer (RLD) and Slow Turtle (ST), running in the New York City Marathon. Although both athletes will be running on the same day under the same environmental conditions their physiological make up, their ability to access and breakdown energy substrate utilization, and the way in which both athletes trained prior to the race will alter how both RLD and ST will handle the stress of a 26.2 mile run. The following paper, which will explore why these two marathon runners can be expected to experience the New York City Marathon in two completely different ways, will compare and contrast how the above factors impact the athletic performance of both athletes. In order to clearly compare and contrast the underlying causes of why RLD and ST will perform differently during the marathon this paper will (1) outline the different metabolic pathways used during physical activity for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, (2) discuss the relationship between athletic performance, muscle characteristics and athletic ... This comment relates to the case at hand, as the bank provided funds to the construction the lines transmitting power to neighbouring countries; although, the project has been criticised for its human rights and environmental concerns. This is an action which has been criticised from the view point of its safeguard policy whereby the bank should focus on infrastructure development and not in profit making given the government of Ethiopia plans to export half of the power generated to Kenya. Moreover, the agenda of the government of Ethiopia in exporting electric power, where only 26.56% of the population in the country have access to electric power, should not have been supported by the World Bank. At the time, many nations in the Europe either dismissed or did take notice of the importance of this decree by the United States. With this official document, the national interest of the US was made clear, but it would not have to be enforced and modified until almost a century later (Nester, 86 87). Another way the United States protected its interests in the international system was through the Roosevelt Corollary. This addition to the Monroe Doctrine established the power of the US to police nations in the Western Hemisphere, especially when the governments, or heads of power, of these nations are not able to maintain order (Hastedt, 12). • 23. The Advantages Of Database Management Systems Assignment 1 Matthew Fisher May 15, 2016 Part 1: Database Concepts Topic 1: The Advantages of Database Management Systems A database system would offer the innkeepers several advantages over the flat file system, including enforced data integrity, minimized effort to adapt data into usable information, and abstraction. Storing data in a flat file system, as the innkeepers do, and accessing the data directly pose problems of data integrity. Anomalous data could easily arise if the innkeepers update a record in one file, but do not take care to update related records in other files. Where data are kept in multiple, separate files, but have a conceptual relationship to each other, a file system is of limited use compared to a database management system (DBMS). A DBMS ensures that relationships between entities are enforced. By way of example, a GUEST entity might have a GUEST_ID attribute that appears in multiple locations (e.g. a RESERVATIONS entity). In the file system model, the innkeepers may choose to store addresses of guests in both GUEST and RESERVATION files in order to quickly access address information while booking reservations. If the address is updated in one place, but not the other, this results in a data anomaly, where the address attributes for a guest do not agree. A well designed database using a DBMS could circumvent this issue by storing no guest information in the RESERVATION table other than GUEST_ID. With this relationship, guests addresses can still ... Fifteen percent of the remaining patients develop symptoms of their diverticulosis, while the remaining five percent develop diverticulitis. The symptoms of diverticulosis are often hard to differentiate and determine because they are often nonspecific symptoms, such as simple abdominal pain that is relieved by moving their bowels (Marrs, 2006). Once inflammation occurs, the diverticulosis is progressed to diverticulitis. This inflammation occurs from the large number of bacteria that target the areas of weakened gastrointestinal wall and combine with undigested foods. It is still unknown today why some diverticula became inflamed while others do not. There are some theories surrounding this issue that states the inflammation occurs only when the erosion of the colon wall is so bad that the body s immune system is unable to protect such a large, disrupted area. In some cases, the inflammation gets so bad and infection co exists. This combination can result in the enlargement of the infection, allowing it to extend into the abdomen and become peritonitis when it infects the lining of the abdomen (Unknown, 2010).
