The Total Number Of Clinical Trials
The total number of clinical trials in Portugal has recently experienced a reduction in a
12
13worrying trend revealing a significant loss of competitiveness in this field. Between 2006 and
142012 the number of trials decreased by 26%, i.e. from 160 to 118 studies. The trough in these
16numbers only arrived in 2011, when just 88 studies took place. This trend shall only either

19
20of medical and supportive care, job creation, the organization of health facilities and early
21access to innovative medicines and research methodologies 1. The reasons for this decrease
22
23stem from numerous aspects, including the cost and difficulties of attracting volunteers to
24
25participate in such studies.
26
27
28The effectiveness of a clinical trial depends on the size of its sample, sample homogeneity,
29
30the similarity of the results and the differences among the mean values for each group. In this
31kind of study, it proves very difficult to achieve the minimum participant numbers required to
32
33obtain the ideal sample size. This situation occurs for various reasons including the study cost,
34
35the low frequency of certain diseases, uncertainty about the effects of treatment, and among
36others 2.

The Challenges Of Global Citizenship
Global Citizenship Global citizenship comes with certain rights and responsibilities that govern
being a citizen of a nation and the global entity as a whole. Globalization and the advanced
technology have enabled increased connections and integration across the world. As global
citizens, the choices and actions that persons undertake have consequences that may impact
people and societies on the local level, nationally and internationally. Global citizenship during
this period of major technological advancement is very beneficial to the development of personal
goals. People are able to understand emotions and develop sensitivity to unravel the world which
helps in gaining different perspectives. This enables understanding of each other which fosters
transparency and interdependency that helps people live with each other despite existing
differences. The current situation is a far cry from what went on in the past with conflicts and
clashes brought about by differences in ideologies. Nowadays, people can enhance their personal,
academic and professional goals because as global citizens, we have been able to develop our
identities which has put emphasis on concept of emotion and grasping of the world. Globalization
has brought diversity and eliminated individualism and alienation. People are able to see value of
differences among others, deal with cultural diversity and therefore live, work and study in different
places without issues (InfoBase, 2017). The concept of

Persuasive Essay About Fire
Ever heard of a story of a little boy discovering fire for the first time? Well this little boy s mom
had a lighter that had a dolphin design on it and it was used as a decoration piece. So, the little
boy found the lighter and started to play with it and got it to work. He then proceeded to go into
the bathroom so his mom did not know what he was doing. The little boy started to put it up to
stuff to see what would happen. The first thing he grabbed was hairspray. He played with the
hairspray and the lighter. He then managed to light the toilet paper on firewhich caused the whole
bathroom to catch on fire. The boy s mom ran into the bathroom and started to put out the fire
and when it was out she found him in his room curled up in a ball holding his thumb because he
had burned it. This little boy should have learned a valuable lesson that day. That lesson is that
fire is nothing to mess with. Many people do not realize the risk of playing or not being careful
with fire especially in forest and dry plains.
Here is something to think about, being irresponsible around fire can cause someone to get hurt
or it could cause people to lose their home. In 2002 there was four hundred and sixty five homes
destroyed in Arizona because of wild fires (Kennedy and Johnson). Homes could be saved if
forest fires did happen because of humans. A lot of forest fires are started by humans. As many as

Pat Tillman Character Traits
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. Bob Marley.
And there is one person who showed really how strong they really were and, that person was Pat
Tillman. Pat Tillman was a strong man along with a strong character. Tillman was born in
Fremont California on November 6, 1976 and died April 22, 2004 while serving his country.
Tillman was married for two years to a woman named Marie Tillman. Pat Tillmanwas modest,
determined, and a person with a great work ethic.
Pat Tillman was modest, the word modest means to not boast about accomplishments and Pat
Tillman always showed this trait. Tillman presented his modesty when interviewed after a high
school football game, he stated, I didn t play particularly well. The team played great. He never
wanted to talk about just him, he talked about his team. Another piece of evidence showing Tillman

One of many things that will always be remembered is when Tillman said that he wasn t
particularly the best player on the team but, he always had a big heart. Something like that will
always be remembered, every person who struggles on a team should know something like this.
Something else showing Tillman s strong work ethic is when he made a commitment he always
followed through. For example, when Tillman said he was going to run that marathon he made a
commitment and followed through with that commitment. One last piece of evidence, the word
passion always meant something to to Pat Tillman. He stated that he wanted to be remembered
by his passion. And his passion of playing football kept him playing and trying, another time is
when the passion to become a soldier came upon him. His passion to serve his country was a big
thing to him. Pat Tillman was always a person with a strong work ethic and he will always be

How The Death Penalty Changed
My feelings about the death penalty have not changed. To me, I believe that life in prison is
better, because I would rather them live with what they did than just make it easier for them by
taking their life away. But no one should have to experiece that. I am for the death penalty, but
only when there is not another option for that person. They must really really be a threat for our
society, especially when they are influencing other criminals. Now that I ve researched the death
penalty, I can not believe how many states have it. I know that most use it just for more of a threat.
According to the news and how many crimes we actually have, evidently it doesn t really scare
anyone. Once it gets to that point, hopefully it continues its job

The Constitutional Monarchy System Of Nepal
Until 1990, Nepal was ruled by an authoritarian system. Democracy was declared in 1990
however it was constitutional monarchy system so people were not happy with this system. In
1996, Nepal Communist Party Maoist started civil war and ended in 2006. A decade long civil
war had 42 demands but 2 demands were noteworthy that were constituent assembly election (CA)
and federal system in Nepal. There was a peace process agreement between Maoist and government
of Nepal in 2006. Constituent elections were held two times. After CA election, a new federal
constitutionhas been made in 2015 but it will not be functioning until new federal election is done.
People have taken it negatively and positively both side. It is said that the constitution is being
rightly said to be amongst the most progressive in Asia guaranteeing equal rights to lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender community and providing representation for the same in government
mechanisms (P. Rohit, 2015).
In the last sixty five years, this is the first that has been widely adopted by an elected constituent
assembly. This constitution has also made a progressive transition from being sixty years of being
a Hindu state to a secular nation (P. Rohit, 2015). It is also the first constitution that moves away
from the previously unitary system to a federal nature by setting up different provinces distributing
legislative and executive powers between the legislative and provincial governments (P. Rohit,
2015).

Essay about To My Dear and Loving Husband
To my Dear and Loving Husband
Romantic language in literature has been used for ages to express authors feelings for another
human being. This language has been developed through out the years to create ways in which
different types of romantic emotions can be expressed in writing. From the breath taking romantic
novels of today all the way back to the first writers of the Bible and the romantic books of Song of
Solomon and Psalms, romantic language has not only been used to express human emotions but
also the role of these emotions in the culture of the times. There have been numerous authors who
dared to go beyond what their society would have viewed as politically or morally correct. Anne
Bradstreet is one of these authors; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The title, To my Dear and Loving Husband, clearly signifies that this poem was intended for her
husband alone. Bradstreet did not live in a time where woman authors would have been very
highly respected for their work; this allowed her the opportunity to create very personal pieces
because she believed that they would never be published. If Bradstreet had intended for her poetry
to become available for the public she would have been forced to write much differently.
Bradstreet understood the implications of writing her true emotions and never would have
done so if she had not felt that they would have been kept safe from the scrutiny of her fellow
puritans. The fear of being ridiculed, banished or killed would have stopped Bradstreet from
ever composing poetry for the public as racy as the poems she created for her family especially
her husband. Due to the fact that she believed no one would read this poem besides her husband
she was able to write more closely to how she truly felt without fear or trepidation, this is apparent
in the fact that this particular poem is much different from many of her other poems.
There are many aspects of the poem To my Dear and Loving Husband which set it apart from most
of Bradstreet s other poetry. The poem begins with one solid, short and concise sentence, this is far
different than most of her poems which begin with a vague idea or a much longer complex
statement. This shows a change in writing

Understanding Cashflow Essay
Understanding Cashflow
Within an organisation, money comes in and flows out. This is called the organisation s cashflow.
From time to time, business managers may pose questions such as:
* Can we afford to buy x?
* Are we going to be able to pay that bill?
* Wouldn t it be nice if we could develop y?
To answer such questions, they will often have to carry out some form of financial planning, and
often to seek additional finance from outside the company. The key issues are:
* What is the finance for?
* How long will it be needed?
* Is it affordable, i.e. can the firm keep up with the repayments?
Common methods of finance
Sources of finance fall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Businesses often depend on customers paying bills promptly. Given that customers like Ron Rust
may delay payment as long as possible, an overdraft can be a useful form of short term business
finance.
Factoring
Trade debts mean that money can often be tied up for as much as sic months. For a business
requiring cash quickly this can be a real problem. A factoring company may offer immediate
payment of part of the amount owed to a business normally around 80% with the balance being
paid when the debt is settled. This provided an immediate way for a business to improve its
cashflow. In return, the factoring company will charge a fee which includes interestand
administration charges.
Leasing and hire purchase
There are many different ways for customers to receive goods and make payments over time.
Goods on hire purchase remain the property of the finance company until the customer has made
all the payments. Other credit purchasing schemes enable the goods to belong to the customer
from the first payment. With leasing, the lessee uses the asset while making regular payments to
the lessee, who owns it. An operating lease is for a small amount, and a capital or finance lease is
for a large item over an extended period.
Loans
Most businesses need to borrow in order to trade successfully. The charge for

Examples Of Satire On Smoking
Satire It s not surprising that in this world you see at least one person a day smoking. I mean,
who doesn t love watching people rush to get lung cancer? Seeing one person just taking their
life away with something so stoppable, is so adorable, I mean what other qualities would you
look for in a man? I like mine fully addicted and ready to waste their life away. It s the best
religion that I must say so myself. In fact, I like that, people rely on something like religion to
lead them in the way they want to live their life. I personally believe in the smokies. The
smokinese are a group of people that worship nicotine. Id honestly love to be a part of that. I mean,
I love the smell of it in the air, the feeling of polluted air. Nothing gets better than that. In reality
smokingis the only relief to take away pain these days. I mean, what other reason would people
put something so horrible into their body if it didn t relieve any type of stress or good feeling. I
live for the day to see everyone to have lung cancer and killing themselves for just being
vulnerable about stress relief. I mean, people preach smoking nowadays. People wanna go back
to the way of smoking in a restaurant and people recommend it, it s a religion that s being created
without anyone understanding. As the smokinese people believe that the only way to live a happy
and stress free life is to become addicted to smoking, they sure are right. I mean, think about it, out
of everyone in this world that

The Battle Of The Confederate Army
William Thomas was 36 and the owner of a plantation in Virginia near Norfolk. He had a wife, two
daughters, and a son who he intended to pass the plantation on to just as he father had to him.
Following the events of Fort Sumter, he elected to join the Confederate army to defend against
what he saw as the Union s invasion.
April 20, 1861 Plantation near Norfolk, VirginiaThe Yanks to the north have the nerve declare
war, and a blockade no less, against us over us taking what is rightfully ours! Fort Sumter is part
of South Carolina and therefore the property of the Confederacy. Those Union soldiers had no
right to refuse handing it over. They claim it was an act of aggression, I say we were just doing
what was necessary to take what was rightfully ours. I won t stand by while Yanks invade our
land and our homes and try to tell us how we should live our lives. Tomorrow, I will leave for
Richmond to join the Confederate Army. I will leave the plantation in my son s charge. I have
taught him how to manage it for when he inherits it himself. With luck, he will be able to manage it
at his own discretion without a bunch of bureaucrats forcing their way into his business.
April 25, 1861 Richmond, VirginiaI have arrived in Richmond and have enlisted. They eagerly
accepted me into the ranks as the need for soldiers is high. There has been talk that some may be
conscripted to fill the need.

What Are The Persuasive Techniques Used In Channel 4
INTRODUCTION:
Advertisements are actually everywhere and are used by many companies and organisations.
Advertisements have become a powerful foundation to sell products or information for the
consumer s knowledge by the use of persuasion, fear, shock tactics and statistics. The purpose of
advertisements is to persuade their audience into buying their product or getting a message across.
Without advertisements, companies would not be able to develop in their competitive business.
BBC s advertisement of the 2012 Summer Olympics and Channel 4 s advertisement of the 2012
Paralympics are analogous and can be compared to its sources of form, language, audience, purpose,
and context, which are used to improvise its persuasive techniques.
PARAGRAPH... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is manifested through the use of nationalistic landmarks and prominent locations within the
two texts and is used to sense nationalism to the audience as they can relate to these iconic locations
and can virtually feel as if they have taken participation in the Games. Hence the targeted audience
is persuaded to watch the broadcast to remain feeling involved. The mutual purpose of both
advertisements is to induce consumers into screening the specific broadcasting network coverage of
the games. Channel 4 s campaign is primarily composed of athletes from the United Kingdom,
whereas the athletes in the BBC s campaign are distinct from specific nations. Hence it can be
distinguished that the intended target audience for the two texts is the general public of the United
Kingdom by analysing the context within the two visual texts. BBC s advertisement has achieved
its audience by the presence of dramatic music and animations which resembled participation in
events with passion and energetic performance. Inversely, Channel 4 has freshly introduced
Paralympics to gain its popularity and viewers as it is very miniature compared with the Olympics.
Channel 4 has achieved its audience by showing the playing style of the incapacitated athletes and
portraying the causes of their physical flaw. The purpose behind it was to show sympathy

Not In Touch With Personal Power
It doesn t take much effort to notice that some people are more empowered than others. But while
it may appear that empowered people have something empowered people don t, inherently we all
have the same power.
The defining factor is that some people are in touch with and connected to this power and some
people are not.
Reasons
And there are many reasons as to why someone is or is not in touch with their personal power.
This can relate to: the kind of childhood one has experienced; how one responded to their
childhood; the friends that one has and the people they have come across; how resilient one is and
many other factors.
There is also the social aspect here and how mainstream society s often discourage ones personal
power and actively foster dependence on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One can then end up being caught up in their feelings or thoughts and react to them. And how they
behave will then depend on these internal aspects and not conscious decisions.
Consequences
When this sense of personal power hasn t been realised it can lead to all kinds of consequences.
The desire to control others is one of these consequences and one of the more common examples.
Another thing that can happen is the idealisation and elevation of other people. To admire another
human being and to respect their achievements is one thing. It is another to see someone else as
being superior and as having something that one does not have themselves. When this takes place,
one is giving their own power away and denying what they have within them.
Certain societal figures can then feed on this power that is being given to them by people. This can
explain how authority figures, such as those in the political arena, often have so much power; it s
because so many people have renounced their own.

The Cosmic Prison
There are many things that seem to be complete opposites of each other, yet after looking in depth
our immediate conclusion appears to be wrong and the reality is they share many similarities. A
popular example of this is the comparison between humans and chimpanzees. At an initial glance,
humans seem so far superior to chimpanzees that the difference is at an astronomical level. The
concepts, ideas, societies, relationships, technological advances that humans have brought are
incomparable to what little chimpanzees have accomplished. Yet as scientists have studied and
observed closely, they have noted that in reality we are made of nearly the exact same genetic
structure as the chimp, varying in only a 1% difference. This miniscule 1%... Show more content on

In The Cosmic Prison, Eiseley explains how man confines themselves to their current understanding
of their self and their environment, without even considering the possibility of a greater
inconceivable universe. Although Eiseley makes sure to suggest that the human brain could be
physically limited to this understanding, he explains how it is most likely by man s will alone.
This is because man is unwilling to accept that they may not understand, or may be wrong. They
believe that they are right and won t give into other ideas. Eiseley explains this by stating that
[Man] could never, by any conceivable stretch of the imagination, be aware that their so called
universe was, in actuality, the prowling body of a cat or the more time enduring body of a
philosopher . We think of ourselves as the only sentient part of the universe, some big significant
species. Stephen Crane s poem, A Man Said to the Universe , holds this same ideology. In this
poem, Man exclaims to the universe Sir, I exist! This exclamation shows Man s attempt to be
recognized, but he is shot down and told of how insignificant he is compared to the rest of the
infinitely existing universe, but they cannot see this because of their arrogance. All three of these
examples display man s anthropocentrism, although in different approaches. The next visible
connection between these works, closely related to the previous, is how puny and insignificant man
really is. If one takes a moment to think about it,

What Is Freight Transport System
The North American and European railway systems is freight transportation systems I will be
comparing in this paper. When analyzing the cost structures between the two systems, the results
show that the share of fixed costs in the overall transportation cost is much high in Europe versus
North America. When transporting freight by railway in North America, rail companies look for
the shortest route for each train car while European rail companies devote their focus to the high
utilization and consolidation in each train car. The capacity of each train and how the cost is

There are still many challenges that are hindering the future development in globalized trade.
Environmental issues, energy demands and issues in the supply chain field are just a few of these
challenges. An example of the energy issue would be the ongoing fluctuations in energy costs.
Freight and air transportation both depend on petroleum. Typically, the times of higher energy
prices creates a rationalization in the international trade market and the underlying supply chains.
Many the global policies and guidelines in the European Union rest within each member s state.
Due to this, the effectiveness of the European Union guidance relies on the willingness of member
states to adopt the policy. One of the greatest outcomes of the European Union applying and
sticking to their rules was the reduction in custom clearances at a nation s border. Before January
1993, every truck was stopped at every border for tax clearance, customs check and your usual
vehicle inspection. Overall, they were looking for a way to create a more effective market

important forum for creating a benchmark on policies on open and competitive markets throughout
Europe.

Analysis Of White Tigers By Maxine Hong-Kingston
One of my first impressions of the story White Tigers by Maxine Hong Kingston is that the story
that she shares with the reader is what I believed to be a dream that she had. I thought that this
dream was inspired by the times her and her mother spoke their own language, talk story. Talking
story is a dialect that transcends our basic comprehension of communication. It is the hybrid of
our own language, and the power of storytelling fused upon one another. I thought that Kingston
told us this story because it was the best dream that she has ever imagined. This story was so
moving for her since she felt a deep connection with it. However, I assumed that this story was
just generic. I overlooked the familiarity that this story had. I envisioned that Hong Kingston was
telling us her own version of the tale of Fa Mu Lan. Thousands of years ago, The Ballad of Fa Mu
Lan, written by Tzu Yeh is about a woman, Fa Mu Lan. Mu Lan was extraordinary because she
took her father s place in battle when he was chosen to fight. Not only was she brave, and
thoughtful, she was the first ever woman to go to battle and live. Then I went back to White
Tigers, and saw that after the fantasy that she created was stated, she reflects back on her
childhood which was just merely depressing. After reading both the Ballad, and White Tigers, I
realized that she injected herself into this fantasy because she wanted to rebel as did Mu Lan.
Being femalefor Hong Kingston was a living nightmare,

I Am A Graduate From The University Of California
In 10 years, I hope to be a graduate from the University of California, Riverside, School of
Medicine and be a practicing physician in Southern California. Though I will thoroughly explore
all specialties, I have a particular interest in pediatrics. With frequent visits to the doctor s office
due to illnesses and infections from my vesicoureteral reflux, the health care setting became a
place I was comfortable with. I developed a strong relationship with my pediatrician and aspired to
be like him. Becoming a pediatrician would allow me the privilege of watching my patients grow
up and develop a relationship with them and their families. The root of my interest lies with my
love for working with children. Throughout high school, I thoroughly enjoyed my time volunteering
at a summer camp for elementary school children. My recent experiences tutoring disadvantaged
children through Project Literacy at UCLA and volunteering at Kids Come First Community
Health Center in Ontario have confirmed my decision to pursue pediatrics. My time at Kids Come
First has exposed me to the health issues those in Inland Southern California are facing. Through
my time at UCR School of Medicine, I hope to develop strong relationships with nearby hospitals
and clinics, so that I would have the opportunity to continue serving that region. I would also love
to incorporate my passion in community service into my career. I want to not only focus on healing

The Paradox In Mary Oliver s Crossing The Swamp
In Mary Oliver s Crossing the Swamp , the speaker compares a swamp to the struggles and
hardships in life that fight against her. The speaker repeatedly contrasts herself to the swamp to
emphasize the vastness of the swamp, conveying how the speaker understands the hardships that
come with life. The speaker describes the swamp as a wet thick cosmos [...] гѓјthe nugget . The
paradox compares the vast cosmos with a small golden nugget, contrasting how the experience the
speakeris going through may be on a small scale such as the nugget , but may be large and vast
like a cosmos . The nugget is described with caesuras, and the caesuras are repeated five times
throughout the poem. They act as an interruption in the poem, conveying that the speaker cannot
smoothly walk through the swamp and the journey is labor intensive. As the speaker goes through
the swamp, she experiences branching vines, the dark burred faintly belching bogs . The
alliteration of the hard b sound emphasizes how the speaker is fighting against the struggles in the
swamp to get through. The struggles are emphasized as she goes through pathless, seamless,
peerless mud . The scarcity of the mud is described with the repeated use of less and the speaker
indicates how the mud is moveless and still. The image is further expanded with the comparison to
life, and how life requires individuals to make their own path through their life and that the universe
does not simply create paths for each individual. She then feels her bones knock together at the
pale joints as she tries to grasp for foothold, fingerhold, mindhold over the mud. The descriptions
increase her sense of powerlessness in the vast cosmos she is in. Her mindset shifts as she
struggles over such slick crossings, deep hipholes, hummocks that sink silently into the black, slack
earthsoup . The repeated sibilants emphasizes how she is slowly sinking into the mud. However,
she is not resisting but is accepting the mud and the fact that she has no control over it. The
acceptance contrasts her earlier struggles with the belching bogs that she fought against. Mud
symbolizing life s struggles itself, the speaker learns to acceptthe challenges ahead of her. She shifts

Drones In Italy Research Paper
Italy illegaly filled an aincient roman catacomb with harmful waste Kilometers of ancient Roman
tunnels lying below a series of archaeological sites in Rome have slowly been filled up with
illegally dumped and highly toxic waste. Police made the discovery on Monday, in the ancient
caves beneath the archaeological park of Tor Fiscale on the outskirts of the city. Deep in the bowls
of the city they found the ancient network of caves have been filled with old refrigerators,
mattresses, sacks of rubble, electronics and even industrial waste. It s terribly damaging, not only
environmentally, but also for the city s archaeological heritage, police commander Antonio
DiMaggio told Rome daily, Il Messagero. We found everything: tar, industrial waste, tyres
batteries...there s practically an underground lake of oil. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is thought local businesses and residents had been using the site to cheaply dispose of their
unwanted goods for years. Police discovered that unscrupulous dumpers had even drilled shafts
down into the caves below, which they used as chutes to quickly dispose of their unwanted goods.
The network of caves stretches under the edge of the Tor Fiscale park and runs next to the ancient
Roman highways, of the Appian Way and the Via Latina. Above ground, the area is home to the
spectacular remains of luxury villas, aqueducts, ancient and ancient tombs. The dangerous waste all
now lies in the caves and tunnels which were quarried by slaves into the Eternal city s bedrock.
The rock, known as Tufa, was a key ingredient in ancient Roman cement. Once quarried, certain
areas within the underground network became catacombs, places where the very first Christians of

We are surrounded by organizations and we participate in them as members, employees, customers,
and clients. Most of our life is spent in organization, and they supply the goods and services on
which we depend to live. Organizations on the other hand depend on people, and without people,
they would disappear. Factors Contributing to the Growing Importance of HRM a. Accommodation
to workers needs Workers are demanding that organizations accommodate their personal needs by
instituting such programs as flexible work schedules, parental leave, child care and elder care
assistance, and job sharing. The human resource department plays a central role in establishing and
implementing policies designed to reduce the friction between organizational demands and family
responsibilities. b. Increased complexity of the Manager s job Management has become an
increasingly complex and demanding job for many reasons, including foreign competition, new
technology, expanding scientific information, and rapid change. Therefore, organizations frequently
ask human resource managers for assistance in making strategic business decisions and in matching
the distinctive competencies of the firm s human resources to the mission of the organization.
Executives need assistance from the human resource department in matters of recruitment,
performance evaluation, compensation, and discipline. c. Legislation and litigation The enactment

The Strain Theory Of Criminal Behavior And Is A Breakdown...
Running Head: Strain Theory
Stain Theory
Keisha Harris
Valdosta State University
The strain theory explains the criminal behavior and is a breakdown of why people commit
crimes. The theory was developed by an American Sociologist Robert K. Merton (1910 2003).
Merton believed that the society influences deviance and plays a huge role in criminals committing
crimes. Emile Durkheim (1858 1957) presented the earliest version of the strain theory. He believed
that well built societies set restrictions on individual goals, meaning that the person was given a
chance to achieve their goals. Durkheim theory centers on the pursuit of limitless goals, whereas
Merton theory targets the lower economic individuals who are incapable of achieving more limited
economic goals.
Robert K. Merton was a prominent social scientist. He was born into working class family and
received a Doctorate degree in sociology from Harvard University (Crossman, A). The Merton
(1938) strain theory was presented in an article Social Structure and Anomie during the height of
the Great Depression. In the 1950s during the economic growth people had began to wonder why
was there a large amount of crime still taking place, it was at this point that the theory was able to
persuade others. Whenever there are limits placed on achieving goals and reaching social values
deviance is bound to happen. Merton strain theory from (1930s 1960s) was centered on the
American dream of wanting financial

Teenage Drinking Essay
Teenage Drinking
According to Lang nine out of ten high school seniors have used alcohol, one out of twenty use
it daily, and one out of three will get drunk during any given weekend (back cover). Teenage
drinking is a very serious problem that is growing by the day in our country. I want to know what
kids who drink are getting themselves in to when they decide to start in high school or junior high.
What types of health and psychological problems will they be facing? What are the chances that
they will become addicted to alcohol, or to some other drug, for life? My father is an alcoholic and

the information they gave. I started out my search at the local library, looked through some
books about alcohol, and found several ranging from its uses and abuses to teenage drinking. I
did not bother looking in the encyclopedia because I figured that the people who wrote these
books had already done it for me. The first book I looked through was by Alan R. Lang (February
29, 2000); I skimmed through the table of contents of the book and saw that it had a section
devoted to the short term as well as the long term effects of alcohol. So, in order to get a better
understanding of this issue I turned to the specified page and found that the effect of alcohol is
directly related to ones BAC, or blood alcohol concentration (Lang 39). This is what makes
different kinds of people engage in a wide array of behaviors, such as when two people drink the
same amount of alcohol but the person who has more body mass does not feel the effects of the
alcohol. The other person, who has less body mass will get drunk faster and is said to have less of
a tolerance for alcohol .

The exit of the United Kingdom from membership of the European Union, is also known as Brexit.
Derived from Britain and Exit.
The United Kingdom held a referendum to decide if they leave the European Economic
Community (EEC) in 1975. This was mainly because in 1963 and 1967 the United Kingdom
applied for membership and was denied because Charles de Gaulle the president of France at
that time dismissed the application because of the fear that English language will dominate the
continent. In 1973 the United Kingdom made a third application and was successful but backed
out in 1973 (2 years Later). The Prime Minster of the United Kingdom David Cameron
announced on 23rd June 2016, a referendum will be held allowing the British people vote on
whether to leave or remain members of the European Union. Majority of Britain voted to leave

species of sea turtles alive today. They are found in oceans all around the world and are known
to travel large distances throughout their lives ( Leatherback Sea Turtle Facts For Kids, With

being between the ages of 8 and 15 years of age , and after mating only the females come ashore
to lay their eggs (World, Seaturtle. Leatherback Sea Turtle. ). This routine takes place during the
night, and during this time the female sea turtle excavates a hole in the sand, depositing around 80
eggs, filling the nest, leaving a large, disturbed area of sand that makes detection by predators
difficult, and finally returning to the sea ( Leatherback Nat). The sex of the egg is determined by
the temperature inside the nest, so a female hatchling is produced at a higher temperature whereas
male hatchlings are produced in colder temperatures. When the eggs do hatch the males and

Thalidomide Research Paper
Thalidomide was introduced by the method of Russian roulette. Practically nothing was known
about the drug at the time of its marketing. A seemingly harmless drug with a dangerous secret,
that was overlooked due to the corporate greed of GrГјnenthal, the company that synthesized
thalidomide. A short time after its release, the drug became a sudden hit in countries across the
world. It was known as the wonder drug due to the fact that scientists could not get a test rat to
overdose. The illusion that thalidomide was safe, went to the point that manufacturers were
claiming that even pregnant women could take the drug for morning sickness. Alas nearly 12,000
infants would be maimed at birth with a once rare disease known as Phocomelia, meaning seal

The Music Media Industry
Music Media In the music media industry, I do not believe in having illegal music. There is no
point in having illegal music. I do not support having illegal music because of the money, illegal
music can cause trouble, and there should just be no more illegal music.
Money can be a problem when it comes to buying music. Illegal music is free, but legal music cost
money and whoever owns that server gets all the money. (Judith Baughman). We are also
wasting money like the author, Judith Baughman said, Having to get legal music can sometimes
add up to a lot of your money and you are just wasting your hard earned cash on music that
should be for free. We should not have to have to pay for music; we should get music for free.
There is really no point in having legal music, but we should not be getting illegal music either.
You should get legal music because that way you are not considered a thief. (Judith Baughman).
So it s better to buy legal music instead of stealing it. Even though legal music cost money, it is
better than getting into trouble. (Judith Baughman). This is why we should get music for free
because there is no point in having legal and illegal music. Many people buy and steal music, but
there should be no need for that because they should not have to buy music; music should just be
for free. There is no point in having illegal music if everyone downloads them anyways. (What is

A Transformation from Gracious to Malicious
Most people are kind at heart, but society s negative perceptions changes them. Mary Shelley s
novel, Frankenstein, portrays this concept. Frankenstein s monster treats humans kindly refuting
the stereotype that all monsters are evil. In this novel, the monster is kind towards mankind until
society criticizes him and turns him into a malicious creature. The monster that Frankensteincreates
has kind hearted morals, but because society harms him based on his hideous appearance. Because
of his treatment, he transforms into a murderous monster, pointing to the destructive power of
societal criticism.
Society rapidly judges the monster and forms opinions based on his outside appearance rather than

The feelings of kindness and gentleness which I had entertained but a few moments before gave
place to hellish rage and gnashing of teeth...I vowed eternal hatred and vengeance to all mankind
(Shelley 168). The monster s use of the words destruction , miserable pain , hellish rage , eternal
hatred , and vengeance to all mankind strongly portray his detestation towards all mankind. The
monster showed benevolence, kindness , and gentleness , but instead he receives a bad reaction
from mankind in return. From the novel Horror, Michael Stuprich writes, Sympathy and antipathy
are our crucial responses... Frankenstein tells us that our sympathies, our antipathies, can be wrong.
This applies massively to the monster himself (who is rejected instantly, by everybody, purely
because of his hideous appearance)...as if to show that...just monsters suffer from this unfair fate .
(Stuprich 118) The monster s unfair fate illustrates the monster s appearance and how this
appearance leads to his demise. Everyone portrays a monster as an ugly, vicious creature. Because
of the monster s ugly appearance, society judges and shuns the monster, even though he is good
natured. People make mistaken judgments of others based upon appearance. They think they can
trust their senses, but this is not always correct. A bias equating ugly and evil turns people against
the monster, which causes the monster

remarkable. Self drivingcars would impact our advanced society in many positive ways because
the streets would become less congested, the innovations for cars have worked before, and the
amount of deaths would be lessened. The driverless car would be a great innovation to have in
your everyday life because it will allow cities to not be as congested. Firstly, this technology will

in the long run. Next, advanced innovations are being tested, such as safely navigating through
streets, to prove that this technology is capable (Villasenor). Without people driving these cars,
and computers navigating through the streets instead, there will be less accidents as well as
deaths. Finally, road deaths have dropped from 53,000 in 1970 to 33,000 in 2014, which is even

Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers and Assimilation of Jews
An entire chapter of Eric Liu s memoir, The Accidental Asian, is founded on the supposition that
Jews today serve as a metaphor for assimilation into American culture. According to Liu, this is due
to the ease with which Jews have been able to assimilate. However, the progress that Jews have
made in embracing and affecting America has been gradual rather than instantaneous, as evidenced
by the character Sara Smolensky in Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers. Sara is not the symbol
of an assimilated Jew, but instead represents a period of transition between complete assimilation
into American identity and complete dissimilation from her Jewish and Polish heritage, ... Show

Sara s willing dedication to her American identity, as represented by her clothing, is contrasted with
the blood relationship she has with her mother, and by extension her actions separate her from her
entire ancestry and ethnicity. Denounced for her refusal to comply with the traditions of her
culture, and disdainfully called an Americanerin, Sara experiences the social death that Sollors
describes, a result of her cultural relationships having become mutually antagonistic (xx). In this
scene she temporarily ceases to be Jewish and becomes to her people and to her family merely a
female American. This schism is paralleled by a more subtle contrast at the conclusion of the same
chapter that should be noted, when Sara hears the poverty stricken cries that Charity saves you
from death (256)! This statement of course cannot be literally true, but displays a further contrast
between the voluntary and the natural on a more literal level: voluntary generosity versus natural
inevitable death.
Sara is further distanced from her ethnicity through her resistance to the patriarchal doctrines of
Judaism that are followed by her family. Sexually biased Judaism is represented by her father and
his frequent citations of the Torah to justify such a position. When Sara refuses to marry the
wealthy Max Goldstein, her father tells her that the Torah says What s a woman without a man?

Workers were usually male immigrants, free blacks, and slaves and most only worked for less
than 6 months. Those who worked were usually desperate for a job to put food on the table. In

early 1800 s consisted of sewing, washing, cleaning, cooking, and reproducing the next
generation of laborers. In , a rise in domestic service also ensued within black or white, free and
enslaved women. These women were hired as servants, nannies, and maids. Children also began
working as well. Orphans were often used as domestic servants and teen apprentices. The Female
Association Charity School taught destitute girls who were raised on streets to read, write, cipher,

much less than men, because it was thought that they were dependent of their husbands; it was
unheard of to have female breadwinners . Factory accidents, crime, abandonment, and abuse from

Mustang Five Girls
Hamed Rabah Mustang is a Turkish film about five girls growing up in a small and conservative
Turkish town. In this community arranged marriage is common, and the girls are expected to
get wedded to a man their family decides for them. The production then becomes a journey about
gaining freedom, as the two younger sisters try to escape to Istanbul. The title Mustang could be
a reference to the girls desire to free like a horse roaming around the countryside, not meant to be
fenced in. This is similar to the house of the sisters, because slowly the parents put more
restrictions on the home to make it more like a prison. One scene that stood out was at the end of
the movie when Lale climbed a fence to escape her house, and hid on top of it

The Dangers of Marijuana Essay
Marijuana, Cannabis Sativa, has been used for centuries for its medicinal and euphorant properties,
and its fibers, to make hemp cloth and paper. Medicinally, between 1850 and 1942, it was
prescribed in the United States Pharmacopeia as a remedy for a variety of ailments including gout,
tetanus, depression, and cramps (Farthing1992). Today, it is used for reducing intraocular pressure
due to glaucoma, as an antiemetic to relieve nausea associated with chemotherapy, and as an
appetitestimulant for AIDS patients. Recreationally, it is the most widely used illicit drug,
especially among adolescents.
The main psychoactive component of marijuana is (9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Other
prominent cannabinoids include cannabidiol, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this paper, my objective is to determine potential chronic effects of marijuana on memory. I do
this by selectively reviewing studies on this topic and attempt to integrate the findings, which range
from neurobiological standpoints to more general effects on cognitive behavior.
In earlier attempts of finding the cannabinoid receptor, using THC as the ligand proved difficult
because of its lipid solubility which cause non specific, high affinity binding. In Herkenham et al.
(1990), they localize cannabinoid receptors (CB1) throughout the brain by using synthesized,
radiolabeled CP 55,940, structurally similar to THC, but less hydrophobic and more potent as a
cannabinoid receptor ligand. They find high density binding in the cerebellum and basal ganglia
(which regulates time perception and coordinated movement), the cerebral cortex (perception and
reasoning) and the hippocampus, which is associated with memory. This correlates with marijuana
s distortion of these cognitive functions, including memory. The hippocampus, located in the
inferior medial temporal lobe, has been shown to be involved with memory through studies with
brain damaged patients such as HM, who, in the extreme case, resulted in having anterograde
amnesia (inability to form new long term memories) due to the removal of the bilateral
hippocampus (Gazzaniga et

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as sudden death of an infant less than 1 year
of age that is unexplained by history, and unexplained by postmortem explanation including an
autopsy (Hunt, Hauck, 2006). SIDS is the leading cause of death within the first year of life in
the developed world (Vennenman et al., 2009). In the west, the yearly incidence of sudden death
is 1.3 7.5 per 100,000 in the pediatric population beyond infancy (Mei Hwan, 2010). In order to
find a correlation between SIDS and breastfeeding, a German study was conducted. The study
concluded that exclusive breastfeeding was correlated with reduction in SIDS rather than partial
feeding, which on its own was associated with decrease in SIDS compared to not breastfeeding.

Tyranny Of The Masses By Emmerson
In the quote above, Emmerson exhorts the American people to recognize that their vote is not so
insignificant that it holds no impact in an election, but that it is the involvement of each citizen
which ensures true democracy. He acknowledges that as an American citizen, one has both the
power to neglect their votingprivilege, never knowing its true value, and the power to exercise it,
making a small step toward a just future for your country by participating in the democratic
process. Voting allows the participation of all types of a country s individuals to contribute to the
development of their society. However, it is often times beneficial only to a population s majority.
Thomas Jefferson once called this a tyranny of the masses, which

Should Cellphones Be Banned In Public Places Research
Cell Phones Banning in Public Places Should cellphones be banned in public places? I agree
that cellphones should be banned in public places, however, they are needed in public places as
well. Cellphones may cause distractions but at the same time cellphones are useful when there
is an emergency. Although, people say cellphones cause a lot of sidetracks, they are also
lifesavers. When there is a problem while you re out and about you can use your device to call
for help. However, some people don t know how to just check their phone when they re busy and
that causes an aftermath. The first ever cellphone was created in 1876 by Alexander Graham
Bell. Cellphones were introduced to the public in 1945, but before cellphones there was the
mobile telephone services . The largest MTS market had no more than 44 channels, cellular
networks were an ingenious way to expand service dramatically. In the 2000s, Apple released its
first phone which included computer capable technologies. Samsung. LG, and others followed
Apple s footsteps and phones just keep coming faster each year. Cellphones were mainly created
to make life easier on humans but some people have been taking advantage of this privilege.
Cellphones aren t always the problem but it s the person who owns the phone. Cellphones can be
a throw off to what s really going on and in a blank of an eye you re facing the consequences.
There have been numerous of deaths happen because someone thought taking their eyes off of the

Essay on Hoosiers
Hoosiers
As driving into Hickory, Indiana, a tiny town, I see that every house has a basketball hoop on the
side of their barn. The little town consists of one main street. It has the local supermarket,
barbershop, hardware store and some other small stores. While driving on the main street, I noticed
that everyone notices a stranger coming into town. That is how small Hickory is. Driving into the
high school parking lot I see that the girls dominate the young men by far. Looking around I also see
that everyone is talking about the basketball game that night.
When hearing that Norman Dale was going to coach a high school basketball team, I figured it was
worth a shot to see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then Billy interrupted and said that the only way he would play is if Coach Dale stayed. The
townspeople agreed to keep Coach Dale and now have Billy playing. The next half of their season
they won every game and everyone was happy with what Coach Dale had provided.
The love for the game and the passion for the game are what the young men have. The look in their
eyes and the emotion that was shown, tells the fans and coaches that these young men are for real
when it comes to playing. When someone has love and passion for something will let you pursue
what you need to get done. The young men seem to have this and they want to pursue their journey
to a championship.
It wasn t just the coaching that got the Hoosiers through the season and now into the playoffs. It
was the young men on the team that believed in themselves through Coach Dale. Coach Dale
loved every one of his players and insisted on them playing the way they could play. He saw the
passion in their eyes and had total confidence in their abilities. There was also the big difference
of having Billy on the team. In the beginning of the season there wasn t a leader on the team.
With Billy on the team now, there was someone to go to and get the job done. He carried the team
and provided what needed to be done on behalf of the team.
Leadership is taking charge of a task that needs to be accomplished or

Carson Mccullers Themes Of Loneliness And Isolation
More than half a century later, Carson McCullers themes of loneliness and isolation still speak to
today s readers. The work Reflections In a Golden Eye of Carson McCullers drew a lot of criticism,
but was anything but unsuccessful. Carson McCullers problems with her health and family brought
upon manors of writing, she expressed her loneliness and isolation, showing issues relating to
bisexuality, infidelity, hostility, and murder. Lastly she made a large impact in the readers and
other writers that became familiar with her work. By exploring the depths of Carson McCullers
work, one can come to realization that it made such an impact in its own unique way.
Carson McCullers faced problems in her own life and faced internal problems. Although she did
not self identify as a lesbian or as bisexual, McCullers was emotionally and sexually involved
with both men and women during her life. (Dews) She was bisexual, and married. She studied at
columbia university and then she went back to school a few years later to study in New York.
Her habits became ugly for she became addicted to smoking. She was married to her husband
She faced lots of criticism for such things. Later she got a divorce with her husband in the same
year that Reflections in a Golden Eye was published. She seemed to be always very sick and had
many health problems. Her mental and physical state where poor (Carson). She attempted suicide
and was institutionalized as a consequence. She was not

The Total Number Of Clinical Trials The total number of clinical trials in Portugal has recently experienced a reduction in a 12 13worrying trend revealing a significant loss of competitiveness in this field. Between 2006 and 142012 the number of trials decreased by 26%, i.e. from 160 to 118 studies. The trough in these 16numbers only arrived in 2011, when just 88 studies took place. This trend shall only either 17 18prevent or hinder the achievement of social and/or political benefits, such as the improvement 19 20of medical and supportive care, job creation, the organization of health facilities and early 21access to innovative medicines and research methodologies 1. The reasons for this decrease 22 23stem from numerous aspects, including the cost and difficulties of attracting volunteers to 24 25participate in such studies. 26 27 28The effectiveness of a clinical trial depends on the size of its sample, sample homogeneity, 29 30the similarity of the results and the differences among the mean values for each group. In this 31kind of study, it proves very difficult to achieve the minimum participant numbers required to 32 33obtain the ideal sample size. • 3. The Challenges Of Global Citizenship Global Citizenship Global citizenship comes with certain rights and responsibilities that govern being a citizen of a nation and the global entity as a whole. Globalization and the advanced technology have enabled increased connections and integration across the world. As global citizens, the choices and actions that persons undertake have consequences that may impact people and societies on the local level, nationally and internationally. Global citizenship during this period of major technological advancement is very beneficial to the development of personal goals. People are able to understand emotions and develop sensitivity to unravel the world which helps in gaining different perspectives. This enables understanding of each other which fosters transparency and interdependency that helps people live with each other despite existing differences. The current situation is a far cry from what went on in the past with conflicts and clashes brought about by differences in ideologies. Nowadays, people can enhance their personal, academic and professional goals because as global citizens, we have been able to develop our identities which has put emphasis on concept of emotion and grasping of the world. Globalization has brought diversity and eliminated individualism and alienation. • 4. Persuasive Essay About Fire Ever heard of a story of a little boy discovering fire for the first time? Well this little boy s mom had a lighter that had a dolphin design on it and it was used as a decoration piece. So, the little boy found the lighter and started to play with it and got it to work. He then proceeded to go into the bathroom so his mom did not know what he was doing. The little boy started to put it up to stuff to see what would happen. The first thing he grabbed was hairspray. He played with the hairspray and the lighter. He then managed to light the toilet paper on firewhich caused the whole bathroom to catch on fire. The boy s mom ran into the bathroom and started to put out the fire and when it was out she found him in his room curled up in a ball holding his thumb because he had burned it. This little boy should have learned a valuable lesson that day. That lesson is that fire is nothing to mess with. Many people do not realize the risk of playing or not being careful with fire especially in forest and dry plains. Here is something to think about, being irresponsible around fire can cause someone to get hurt or it could cause people to lose their home. In 2002 there was four hundred and sixty five homes destroyed in Arizona because of wild fires (Kennedy and Johnson). Homes could be saved if forest fires did happen because of humans. A lot of forest fires are started by humans. As many as Ninety percent of wildland fires in the United States are caused by humans. Some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Pat Tillman Character Traits You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. Bob Marley. And there is one person who showed really how strong they really were and, that person was Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was a strong man along with a strong character. Tillman was born in Fremont California on November 6, 1976 and died April 22, 2004 while serving his country. Tillman was married for two years to a woman named Marie Tillman. Pat Tillmanwas modest, determined, and a person with a great work ethic. Pat Tillman was modest, the word modest means to not boast about accomplishments and Pat Tillman always showed this trait. Tillman presented his modesty when interviewed after a high school football game, he stated, I didn t play particularly well. The team played great. He never wanted to talk about just him, he talked about his team. Another piece of evidence showing Tillman s modesty, when he talked to people, he never spoke to them as if they were ... For example, when Tillman said he was going to run that marathon he made a commitment and followed through with that commitment. One last piece of evidence, the word passion always meant something to to Pat Tillman. He stated that he wanted to be remembered by his passion. To me, I believe that life in prison is better, because I would rather them live with what they did than just make it easier for them by taking their life away. But no one should have to experiece that. I am for the death penalty, but only when there is not another option for that person. They must really really be a threat for our society, especially when they are influencing other criminals. Now that I ve researched the death penalty, I can not believe how many states have it. I know that most use it just for more of a threat. According to the news and how many crimes we actually have, evidently it doesn t really scare anyone. This language has been developed through out the years to create ways in which different types of romantic emotions can be expressed in writing. From the breath taking romantic novels of today all the way back to the first writers of the Bible and the romantic books of Song of Solomon and Psalms, romantic language has not only been used to express human emotions but also the role of these emotions in the culture of the times. There have been numerous authors who dared to go beyond what their society would have viewed as politically or morally correct. Anne Bradstreet is one of these authors; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The title, To my Dear and Loving Husband, clearly signifies that this poem was intended for her husband alone. Bradstreet did not live in a time where woman authors would have been very highly respected for their work; this allowed her the opportunity to create very personal pieces because she believed that they would never be published. If Bradstreet had intended for her poetry to become available for the public she would have been forced to write much differently. Bradstreet understood the implications of writing her true emotions and never would have done so if she had not felt that they would have been kept safe from the scrutiny of her fellow puritans. The fear of being ridiculed, banished or killed would have stopped Bradstreet from ever composing poetry for the public as racy as the poems she created for her family especially her husband. Due to the fact that she believed no one would read this poem besides her husband she was able to write more closely to how she truly felt without fear or trepidation, this is apparent in the fact that this particular poem is much different from many of her other poems. There are many aspects of the poem To my Dear and Loving Husband which set it apart from most of Bradstreet s other poetry. The poem begins with one solid, short and concise sentence, this is far different than most of her poems which begin with a vague idea or a much longer complex statement. A factoring company may offer immediate payment of part of the amount owed to a business normally around 80% with the balance being paid when the debt is settled. In fact, I like that, people rely on something like religion to lead them in the way they want to live their life. I personally believe in the smokies. The smokinese are a group of people that worship nicotine. Id honestly love to be a part of that. I mean, I love the smell of it in the air, the feeling of polluted air. I mean, what other reason would people put something so horrible into their body if it didn t relieve any type of stress or good feeling. I live for the day to see everyone to have lung cancer and killing themselves for just being vulnerable about stress relief. I mean, people preach smoking nowadays. People wanna go back to the way of smoking in a restaurant and people recommend it, it s a religion that s being created without anyone understanding. The purpose of advertisements is to persuade their audience into buying their product or getting a message across. Without advertisements, companies would not be able to develop in their competitive business. The mutual purpose of both advertisements is to induce consumers into screening the specific broadcasting network coverage of the games. Channel 4 s campaign is primarily composed of athletes from the United Kingdom, whereas the athletes in the BBC s campaign are distinct from specific nations. Hence it can be distinguished that the intended target audience for the two texts is the general public of the United Kingdom by analysing the context within the two visual texts. But while it may appear that empowered people have something empowered people don t, inherently we all have the same power. The defining factor is that some people are in touch with and connected to this power and some people are not. Reasons And there are many reasons as to why someone is or is not in touch with their personal power. This can relate to: the kind of childhood one has experienced; how one responded to their childhood; the friends that one has and the people they have come across; how resilient one is and many other factors. One can then end up being caught up in their feelings or thoughts and react to them. And how they behave will then depend on these internal aspects and not conscious decisions. Consequences When this sense of personal power hasn t been realised it can lead to all kinds of consequences. The desire to control others is one of these consequences and one of the more common examples. Another thing that can happen is the idealisation and elevation of other people. To admire another human being and to respect their achievements is one thing. It is another to see someone else as being superior and as having something that one does not have themselves. When this takes place, one is giving their own power away and denying what they have within them. Certain societal figures can then feed on this power that is being given to them by people. This can explain how authority figures, such as those in the political arena, often have so much power; it s because so many people have renounced their own. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The concepts, ideas, societies, relationships, technological advances that humans have brought are incomparable to what little chimpanzees have accomplished. In The Cosmic Prison, Eiseley explains how man confines themselves to their current understanding of their self and their environment, without even considering the possibility of a greater inconceivable universe. Although Eiseley makes sure to suggest that the human brain could be physically limited to this understanding, he explains how it is most likely by man s will alone. This is because man is unwilling to accept that they may not understand, or may be wrong. They believe that they are right and won t give into other ideas. Eiseley explains this by stating that [Man] could never, by any conceivable stretch of the imagination, be aware that their so called universe was, in actuality, the prowling body of a cat or the more time enduring body of a philosopher . We think of ourselves as the only sentient part of the universe, some big significant species. Stephen Crane s poem, A Man Said to the Universe , holds this same ideology. In this poem, Man exclaims to the universe Sir, I exist! This exclamation shows Man s attempt to be recognized, but he is shot down and told of how insignificant he is compared to the rest of the infinitely existing universe, but they cannot see this because of their arrogance. All three of these examples display man s anthropocentrism, although in different approaches. The next visible connection between these works, closely related to the previous, is how puny and insignificant man really is. If one takes a moment to think about it, ... • 19. Analysis Of White Tigers By Maxine Hong-Kingston One of my first impressions of the story White Tigers by Maxine Hong Kingston is that the story that she shares with the reader is what I believed to be a dream that she had. I thought that this dream was inspired by the times her and her mother spoke their own language, talk story. Talking story is a dialect that transcends our basic comprehension of communication. It is the hybrid of our own language, and the power of storytelling fused upon one another. I thought that Kingston told us this story because it was the best dream that she has ever imagined. This story was so moving for her since she felt a deep connection with it. However, I assumed that this story was just generic. I overlooked the familiarity that this story had. I envisioned that Hong Kingston was telling us her own version of the tale of Fa Mu Lan. Thousands of years ago, The Ballad of Fa Mu Lan, written by Tzu Yeh is about a woman, Fa Mu Lan. Mu Lan was extraordinary because she took her father s place in battle when he was chosen to fight. Not only was she brave, and thoughtful, she was the first ever woman to go to battle and live. Then I went back to White Tigers, and saw that after the fantasy that she created was stated, she reflects back on her childhood which was just merely depressing. After reading both the Ballad, and White Tigers, I realized that she injected herself into this fantasy because she wanted to rebel as did Mu Lan. I Am A Graduate From The University Of California In 10 years, I hope to be a graduate from the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine and be a practicing physician in Southern California. Though I will thoroughly explore all specialties, I have a particular interest in pediatrics. With frequent visits to the doctor s office due to illnesses and infections from my vesicoureteral reflux, the health care setting became a place I was comfortable with. I developed a strong relationship with my pediatrician and aspired to be like him. Becoming a pediatrician would allow me the privilege of watching my patients grow up and develop a relationship with them and their families. The root of my interest lies with my love for working with children. Throughout high school, I thoroughly enjoyed my time volunteering at a summer camp for elementary school children. My recent experiences tutoring disadvantaged children through Project Literacy at UCLA and volunteering at Kids Come First Community Health Center in Ontario have confirmed my decision to pursue pediatrics. My time at Kids Come First has exposed me to the health issues those in Inland Southern California are facing. The speaker repeatedly contrasts herself to the swamp to emphasize the vastness of the swamp, conveying how the speaker understands the hardships that come with life. The speaker describes the swamp as a wet thick cosmos [...] гѓјthe nugget . The paradox compares the vast cosmos with a small golden nugget, contrasting how the experience the speakeris going through may be on a small scale such as the nugget , but may be large and vast like a cosmos . The nugget is described with caesuras, and the caesuras are repeated five times throughout the poem. They act as an interruption in the poem, conveying that the speaker cannot smoothly walk through the swamp and the journey is labor intensive. As the speaker goes through the swamp, she experiences branching vines, the dark burred faintly belching bogs . The alliteration of the hard b sound emphasizes how the speaker is fighting against the struggles in the swamp to get through. The struggles are emphasized as she goes through pathless, seamless, peerless mud . The scarcity of the mud is described with the repeated use of less and the speaker indicates how the mud is moveless and still. The image is further expanded with the comparison to life, and how life requires individuals to make their own path through their life and that the universe does not simply create paths for each individual. She then feels her bones knock together at the pale joints as she tries to grasp for foothold, fingerhold, mindhold over the mud. The descriptions increase her sense of powerlessness in the vast cosmos she is in. Her mindset shifts as she struggles over such slick crossings, deep hipholes, hummocks that sink silently into the black, slack earthsoup . The repeated sibilants emphasizes how she is slowly sinking into the mud. However, she is not resisting but is accepting the mud and the fact that she has no control over it. The acceptance contrasts her earlier struggles with the belching bogs that she fought against. Mud symbolizing life s struggles itself, the speaker learns to acceptthe challenges ahead of her. • 28. The Strain Theory Of Criminal Behavior And Is A Breakdown... Running Head: Strain Theory Stain Theory Keisha Harris Valdosta State University The strain theory explains the criminal behavior and is a breakdown of why people commit crimes. The theory was developed by an American Sociologist Robert K. Merton (1910 2003). Merton believed that the society influences deviance and plays a huge role in criminals committing crimes. Emile Durkheim (1858 1957) presented the earliest version of the strain theory. He believed that well built societies set restrictions on individual goals, meaning that the person was given a chance to achieve their goals. Durkheim theory centers on the pursuit of limitless goals, whereas Merton theory targets the lower economic individuals who are incapable of achieving more limited economic goals. Robert K. Merton was a prominent social scientist. He was born into working class family and received a Doctorate degree in sociology from Harvard University (Crossman, A). The Merton (1938) strain theory was presented in an article Social Structure and Anomie during the height of the Great Depression. In the 1950s during the economic growth people had began to wonder why was there a large amount of crime still taking place, it was at this point that the theory was able to persuade others. Whenever there are limits placed on achieving goals and reaching social values deviance is bound to happen. Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers and Assimilation of Jews An entire chapter of Eric Liu s memoir, The Accidental Asian, is founded on the supposition that Jews today serve as a metaphor for assimilation into American culture. According to Liu, this is due to the ease with which Jews have been able to assimilate. However, the progress that Jews have made in embracing and affecting America has been gradual rather than instantaneous, as evidenced by the character Sara Smolensky in Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers. In this scene she temporarily ceases to be Jewish and becomes to her people and to her family merely a female American. This schism is paralleled by a more subtle contrast at the conclusion of the same chapter that should be noted, when Sara hears the poverty stricken cries that Charity saves you from death (256)! Women were paid much less than men, because it was thought that they were dependent of their husbands; it was unheard of to have female breadwinners . Factory accidents, crime, abandonment, and abuse from husbands left women desperate to support children. The wages that seamstresses had in early 17th century Baltimore was not a living wage. It was not substantial enough to support themselves or their children. So in 1833, women held strike and refused to work only worked if employers paid them wages equal that of to men. The results of the protest was not what was hoped. Women were actually paid less after the strike, but the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Mustang Five Girls Hamed Rabah Mustang is a Turkish film about five girls growing up in a small and conservative Turkish town. In this community arranged marriage is common, and the girls are expected to get wedded to a man their family decides for them. The production then becomes a journey about gaining freedom, as the two younger sisters try to escape to Istanbul. The title Mustang could be a reference to the girls desire to free like a horse roaming around the countryside, not meant to be fenced in. This is similar to the house of the sisters, because slowly the parents put more restrictions on the home to make it more like a prison. One scene that stood out was at the end of the movie when Lale climbed a fence to escape her house, and hid on top of it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Dangers of Marijuana Essay Marijuana, Cannabis Sativa, has been used for centuries for its medicinal and euphorant properties, and its fibers, to make hemp cloth and paper. Medicinally, between 1850 and 1942, it was prescribed in the United States Pharmacopeia as a remedy for a variety of ailments including gout, tetanus, depression, and cramps (Farthing1992). Today, it is used for reducing intraocular pressure due to glaucoma, as an antiemetic to relieve nausea associated with chemotherapy, and as an appetitestimulant for AIDS patients. Recreationally, it is the most widely used illicit drug, especially among adolescents. The main psychoactive component of marijuana is (9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Other prominent cannabinoids include cannabidiol, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this paper, my objective is to determine potential chronic effects of marijuana on memory. I do this by selectively reviewing studies on this topic and attempt to integrate the findings, which range from neurobiological standpoints to more general effects on cognitive behavior. In earlier attempts of finding the cannabinoid receptor, using THC as the ligand proved difficult because of its lipid solubility which cause non specific, high affinity binding. In Herkenham et al. (1990), they localize cannabinoid receptors (CB1) throughout the brain by using synthesized, radiolabeled CP 55,940, structurally similar to THC, but less hydrophobic and more potent as a cannabinoid receptor ligand. They find high density binding in the cerebellum and basal ganglia (which regulates time perception and coordinated movement), the cerebral cortex (perception and reasoning) and the hippocampus, which is associated with memory. This correlates with marijuana s distortion of these cognitive functions, including memory. The hippocampus, located in the inferior medial temporal lobe, has been shown to be involved with memory through studies with brain damaged patients such as HM, who, in the extreme case, resulted in having anterograde amnesia (inability to form new long term memories) due to the removal of the bilateral hippocampus (Gazzaniga et ... Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as sudden death of an infant less than 1 year of age that is unexplained by history, and unexplained by postmortem explanation including an autopsy (Hunt, Hauck, 2006). SIDS is the leading cause of death within the first year of life in the developed world (Vennenman et al., 2009). In the west, the yearly incidence of sudden death is 1.3 7.5 per 100,000 in the pediatric population beyond infancy (Mei Hwan, 2010). In order to find a correlation between SIDS and breastfeeding, a German study was conducted. The study concluded that exclusive breastfeeding was correlated with reduction in SIDS rather than partial feeding, which on its own was associated with decrease in SIDS compared to not breastfeeding. ...
