For Jersey City to undergo this event is majorly significant because it is such a small city with
such great history. Slaves/former slaves were traveling the Underground Railroad, the secretive
path of safe houses that led thousands of slaves to freedom in the North before the
Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 implies that
freeing the slaves in certain territories were still against the Union. However, the Emancipation
Proclamation of 1863 did not free all slaves due to the fact that the proclamation did not cover
the states that were slave colonized states. New Jersey alone had as many as four routes, with all
of them coming into Jersey City. Those routes extended from the Mason and Dixon Line and the
Valley of the Ohio on the South, to the Canadian border on the North. Jersey City played a crucial
role in that era being that numerous individuals passed through the city. As the last stop in New
