Persuasive School Violence
Imagine this, a parent just sent his/her kid to school. The parent is worried if they will meet someone
new in their class. The parent is casually watching the news and hears that there was a shooting at her
child s school. The adult begins to worry and rushes to the school. The parent was notified that her
child was safe and secure; but soon to find out, the child s friend that she had just made, was shot by
the gunman. Throughout the years, school violence has become a controversial topic in the press.
Parents do not want to keep worrying when they send his/her child to school. The parent should be at
ease when they send their son or daughter to a safe environment. School violence needs to be stopped
in its place as soon as possible! The first reason school violence should be stopped, is for the school to
become a safer environment for the child. Some schools are already giving background checks to
incoming visitors that enter the school building. All schools need to get this program as soon as they
can. This program sees if the visitor is a registered sex offender, a felony, and and major crimes on
their record. The visitor would be denied entry and not allowed into the building. This safety
precaution would make the United States schools an extremely better environment for the future
students of the upcoming generation. Another way to make schools safer is to educate everyone.

Adler s The Neglect Of The Intellect Sloth
In his article The Neglect of the Intellect: Sloth, Mortimer J. Adler asserts that the disuse of a person s
intellect is a moral injustice. Adler coins the term sloth to describe the people committing this moral
crime. He believes that people should use their intellectual abilities for their own personal pleasure
rather than for economic or political gain. Adler employs an aggressive tone when describing the
abuse of the intellect, and appeals to the reader s emotion when portraying intellect as a way the only
way to live a morally good life. Adler s purpose is to convince his readers that intellect should be used
solely for the purpose of increasing knowledge. While Adler s article gives a reasonably convincing
argument about learning for your own well being, he fails to support his claims, baffles his readers
with the overuse of intelligent sounding words, and neglects to explain why you should be intellectual
just for the sake of it. Alder fails to support his claims. Because of this, his claims come across as
opinions, not allegations. In paragraph 4, Adler says, Sloth is a moral fault, but unlike injustice that
results in misconduct toward others, sloth is a moral fault that causes the misconduct of the individual
s private life. This quote demonstrates how Adler makes a statement, but never elaborates on it. He
calls the sloth a moral fault, but doesn t explain how that is true. Adler also mentions that your private
life will be affected, but never precedes to explain how that could happen. Another example is when
Adler states, But there are a great many more who have sufficient ability to make the effort and fail to
do so (paragraph 3). Adler neglects to explain to the reader how this statement is true. He later lists the
activities of the people he referred to engage in, but he never demonstrates an example of failure to

Reading Response 2: the child Olaudah Equiano becoming the man slave Gustavas Vasa.
Olaudah Equiano was a righteous man who was stolen from his home as a child, and made into a
slave. Through Equiano s time as a slave he endured many hardships and made many friends who he
would never see again due to death, or the slave trade. Equiano made a memoir to show readers what
it was like to be a slave, and to show his hardship through his own eyes without showing himself as
someone who is looking for compassion or compensation of any kind. I believe Equiano just had a
story to tell to let out all of the misery, and chaos he had held in for many years. This reading response
is focused on Equiano s transition from having a normal life to becoming a slave.
Olaudah Equiano was born in Essaka in 1745 in Nigeria. Equiano s father was a chief in his village, so
the life of Equiano as a kid was comforting and satisfying. The slave trade in Guinea spread all
through Nigeria s coast. Equiano said that part of Africa, known by the name of Guinea, to which the
trade for slaves is carried on, extends along the coast above 3400 miles, from Senegal to Angola, and
includes a variety of kingdoms . (Equiano, p.356) Due to the high frequency of slave trade around
Equiano s village, while the adults would tend to their crops, instead of playing games Equiano and

The short stories A Clean, Well Lighted Place and A Place I ve Never Been have different settings and
plots, but both have similar characters that lead parallel lives. In A Clean, Well Lighted Place, a
character referred to as the young waiter is a selfish man who cannot sympathize with those who
contrasting lives to his own. The character Nathan in A Place I ve Never Been is selfish and naive. His
woe is me attitude creates tension in the story; while a tough decision he must make drives the plot.
The selfishness, naivety, and age of the young waiter and Nathan all create tension that propels the
