Capote s Narrative Voice
Throughout the novel, Capote appoints several narrative voices. For example, in the first paragraph
within lines 1 12, Capote is speaking himself with the use of third person narration. During this
paragraph, he describes the setting of the novel and uses imagery to portray its scenery. Within his
description of Holcomb, Kansas, the town is perceived as quiet and lonesome, where nothing out of
the ordinary occurs. In this section he speaks in a calm tone, creating a calm setting, which is ironic
due to all of the chaos that arises in it. Another narrative voice, on page 66, is spoken by Alfred
Stoecklein, a man who lived close to the Clutter family. Within this passage, he is talking about how
terrifying it was to assimilate to the trauma that

The U.S. Silica mines in Columbia SC main focus is sustainability. They are the leading silica sand
supplier and they focus on materials that are essential in modern living. U.S. Silica produces fiber
glass, face powders, tooth paste, roofing shingles, etc. They manufacture fiber glass the most.
Airplanes, boats, and truck are some of the consumers that use fiberglass the most. Sand mining also
extracts important minerals like zircon, and rutile which both contain useful elements for industrial
purposes. One key point that was made about mining is that the total economic impact of mining
annually is 1.9 trillion. On the U.S. Silica mines website they list six areas that are their strongest. The

Silica mines the sand looks and feels like baking flour. They also have kaolin which is a white type of
clay. They try to stay away from working with the kaolin because it s sticky and hard to deal with.
They also do very little frac mining. The frac mining process has several steps. Before frac mining can
began all vegetation must be removed from the area. Then to reach the target sandstone, all unwanted
rock layers has to be removed. Thirdly the top of the sandstone has to be exposed and since frac sand
is cemented together explosive charges has to be placed inside holes drilled near the edge of the mine
so the sandstone can break into small pieces. Then loaders are driven in to scoop up sandstones from
near the wall of the mine pit. After the loaders scoop up the sandstones they send the sandstones to a
crusher which breaks down the large chunks into individual sand grains. Sand grains are then washed
to remove any unwanted particles. Once it has been washed, it is stockpiled for drying, sorting, and
the final shipment. After the final shipment mine reclamation is started which is when the mined pit is
filled back up with rocks and other materials that were not used from the sandstones and the new
surface eventually be replanted. Regular sand mining at the U.S. silica is similar to this process except
that there is no need for the explosives process because the sand is already soft and comes apart

Public Broadcasting in the Article “Moving beyond the...
In their article Moving beyond the Vast Wasteland , Laurie Ouellette and Justin Lewis critique how
public broadcasting functions in the US. Liberal reformers hold to the view that television needs
protection from commercialism. The liberal reformer view contains cultural and class hierarchies.
They believe that public television is for the white, college educated middle class viewer who has
cultural capital (Ouellette Lewis, 96). As a result, funding for public broadcasting has gone primarily
towards high culture and intellectual programs and not sitcoms or other popular forms of television.
Ouellette and Lewis disagree with this, saying that these types of high brow programming are not the
only ones worthy of public investment. Instead, they argue that popular programs that are being
commercially maintained also merit public support and investment (96). Rather than reserving public
broadcasting for more educational programming, the authors argue that there is a more progressive
solution that can incorporate popular media forms while still veering away from commercialization.
Thus far, pubic television has failed to adopt popular media forms. Public television stations such as
PBS failed to attract larger and more diverse audiences because they kept their programming
intellectual and dull rather than building on popular aspects of television culture. Ouellette and Lewis
argue that PBS could have incorporated sitcoms, soaps, and sports into their programming and then

Power to the people? web 2.0, Facebook ,and DIY cultural citizenship in Aotearoa New Zealand is to
fuel a more informed and critically diverse debate on the values of web 2.0 as so far most of the
conversation on this topic has been children s safety on the internet .The target audience is fairly wide
however given that the article is from MediaNZ it is safe to assume that the principle demographic this
is aimed toward Media Studies students ,and teachers. Goodwin uses a range of strategies to fuel the
broader discussion on the values of web 2.0: Repeated words with the purpose of accustoming the
audience to the words, Target audience as a strategy with the purpose to gain a more informed and
critical discussion and structural placement with the purpose of highlighting the global and local
importance of web 2.0. The title is significant in revealing the authors intentions to make the article a
debate rather than something with a correct ,or incorrect answer. The question mark is interesting
because it is the first thing that the reader sees ,and it begins make them question what they already
know and don t know about this topic. It is already making them analyse where they stand on this
issue ,and why. I tend to think that making the given audience already think before they

Descriptive And Values Of The People
Zoroastrianism
Alicia Chen, Natalia Bien,

7th Period.
Descriptive/Values of the People:
The people that adhered to this religion were the Persians of the Persian Empire that dated from 550
330 B.C. and was located from Anatolia and Egypt across western Asia to northern India and Central
Asia. The Persian society was patriarchal but the women were seen as very valuable in society and
experienced much more equality than any other women of different empires. The economy was
mostly based on trade which brought the provinces and the entire empire together and more
integrated. Urbanized Zoroastrians governed themselves by councils of notables partly by inheritance
and partly by election. The council managed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some other important values of the people are also shown through the passages that state that the
cultivation of the individual and civic virtues of everyone, including women, following the laws and
avoiding being dishonest, caring for the poor, and loyalty to the church should be important for every
Zoroastrian.
Pourandokht was the first queen of Persia and it shows that women had quite a lot of equality and
could participate in politics and ruling of the empire.
Origin Story:
Zoroastrianism was created by a prophet named Zoroaster, or can also be referred as Ahura Mazda,
who was also considered the god of the religion. Zoroaster grew up in a polytheistic religion, where
they had animal sacrifices and crazy rituals. The Zoroastrianism religion was created where they were
against slaves, animal sacrifices, and only believed in one god (Monotheistic), this shows that his
cultural influences growing up was a big influence on what he believed in when creating this religion.
Zoroastrianism was created during the rise of Persia, when Cyrus the Great conquer the land. A big
belief in Zoroastrianism is that he believed a person should have a choice between God and the evil
spirit s . Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest religions, it combined the

Effects Of Dutch Colonization Of Indonesia
Dutch colonization is one of the main influences on modern Indonesia. According to Dutch
Colonization the Dutch controlled Indonesia for nearly 300 years which sprouted many nationalistic
ideas (Dutch Par 2). Indonesia later became independent in 1945 with other countries such as the
United States of America recognizing it as an independent nation. Dutch occupation directly affected
the modern Indonesian political scene, the global spice trade and local Indonesian religion.
Dutch colonialism has greatly influenced the Indonesian governmental system. Dutch occupation
began in the 1600s where the Dutch established Indonesia as a Dutch colony forcefully using superior
weapons and firepower. Dutch colonialism was extremely harsh with various ... Show more content on

Dutch colonization took hold of one of the largest producers of spice in the world Indonesia and its
entire supply of spice. The Dutch controlled the global spice market by controlling the amount of
spice produced to increasing demand in Europe causing the price of spice to increase to make the
maximum amount of profit effectively monopolizing it through force numerous trade routes were
developed with neighbouring countries (Wright Par 4)
. Eventually, as the Dutch lost control of Indonesia, the amount of spice was not regulated causing the
price of spice to decrease as it would be more accessible and be sold in larger quantities. The Dutch
had amazing business skills and took advantage of what they could in Indonesia and monopolized the
spice trade. This caused them to gain great amounts of profit with no real competition. This, however,
was lost as they lost control over Indonesia causing the supply of spice to increase and spices native to
Indonesia to be grown elsewhere. The global market for spice then drastically changed with spice
becoming more accessible removing the barrier of exclusivity causing spice to be less valuable. In
addition to affecting the Entire world, Dutch colonialism also affected the Indonesian people

Summary Of Invisible Man, Hamlet, And Crime And Punishment
Out of all the books we ve read this year, in my opinion Invisible Man, Hamlet, and Crime and
Punishment did the best job of showing me what the world outside education was like. These books
do the best job because they depict very different lives from mine: they are narrated by men, one
African American, one Russian, and one Danish royalty three identities that I do not claim for myself.
If we re going to learn about the world, I might as well learn about worlds other than my own (which I
d say I m pretty familiar with). A common theme throughout the books I ve chosen is a problem with
the binaries society presents us, whether it be racial, moral or internal. The conflicts addressed in these
books often spring from a failure to find a balance, or an endeavor to find out where in the middle you
belong. Crime and Punishment is a prime example of the dangers of seeing in black and white.
Raskolnikov s existence is a grey area, because although he s a murderer, the reader is sort of rooting
for him. To me, Crime and Punishment is about the different tones morality can take. Raskolnikov is a
murderer, but to him, and maybe some of the readers, he is justified in his act. This crime doesn t
define him as a moral or immoral person, that is for the reader to decide. Sonya is a similar example of
the fluidity of morality, because she s a prostitute, but does so to help her family and also provides
crucial moral guidance to Rodya. Although I have no moral qualms with

Example Of Peer Review
I have always found the peer review process to be beneficial on both ends, whether you are the writer
or the reader, are being reviewed or are the reviewer. Having multiple sets of eyes proofread your
paper should help more than hurt. It is your choice if you want to take the advice your peers gave. You
have the option of not making any changes at all, so whether you decide to take the advice or not, it
does not hurt to receive them. In Paper One, I found that peer reviewing others was a bit difficult
because any comments made could be offending them. I felt that I would come off as criticizing the
kind of person one is, instead of one s work since the assignment was to write about something that is
personal. In Sarah Jackson s UGA s Greatest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Gutierrez s Strategy To Discredit Wilds
The jurors trust Wilds. One of the jurors Armstrong said that she views Wilds as the person one would
go to, if one gets into trouble, and therefore she believed that Wild s story was realistic, and the truth.
Additionally, Wilds was dressed in a tie, sometimes a jacket and appears very confident at trial ( The
Deal With Jay ). What Wilds says sounds plausible, and after Wilds speaks possibly the jury is ready
to convict Syed and in order for the jurors to not convict Syed the defense attorney must do an
excellent job, to compete against the jurors belief that they already developed. As when jurors come to
an initial conclusion at trial, because they do not like uncertainty they try to find proof for their theory,
and often go with their initial theory, unless there is overwhelming evidence to switch teams

Eleven of the forty questions that Koenig brings soundbites of Gutierrez s cross examination are
complex with a negative at the end. She uses were they not ? is it not ? and weren t ? nine times during

Although, The results confirm the adverse impact of confusing questions, the goal is to discredit the
opposing team. One hundred percent of jurors use witness response time, as a factor to determine
witness accuracy in Study 2 (Kebbell, 267). Gutierrez clearly understands the purpose of using
complex questions, so she uses them often, especially when questioning the main eye witness,

Essay on House of Sand and Fog
I read House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III. This story is one of classic tragedy which also
contains a nearly unbearable amount of suspense. It tells a story of the conflict between people of
different races who have an inability to understand each other. They each want possession of a small
house in the California hills but for very different reasons.
On one side, there is Kathy Nicolo and Sheriff Lester Burdon who want the house from which Kathy
was evicted. It previously belonged to Kathy s father and she is reluctant to relinquish possession of it.
Then there is the Behranis, a Persian family who was forced to flee to America in fear of their lives.
They want the house because it symbolizes their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is a genuinely kind person, but is very arrogant and bull headed sometimes. Mr. Behrani is a
former colonel in the Imperial Air Force of Iran. Behrani served Shahanshah Reza Pahlavi faithfully
and effectively until the Shah s overthrow in 1979, which also destroyed the privilege, power, wealth,
and position of people like Colonel Behrani. He is very wise but has a quick temper that he usually
controls. Mrs. Behrani is a kind woman but not very smart and cannot speak English very well. Esmail
is a very kindhearted person who wants to help Kathy even though it conflicts with his family being
able to keep the house.
This book combines characteristics of a suspense thriller with those of a tragedy and is a very
interesting book to read. I liked the detail that the author went into about the psychological aspects of
the characters in making the decisions that they made. I thought that the characters were well
developed and I liked the detail that the author went into about the settings. A detailed setting can
really increase the intensity and realism of a situation in a book. This book contained some difficult
words that lower level readers might not understand. I would recommend that anyone looking for a
suspense/tragedy oriented book should look to this one. The beginning is a somewhat tedious read, but
that is only because the author takes so much time to develop the

Descriptive Vacation
I was more than ready to enter Watiki Indoor Water Resort in Rapid City, South Dakota on July 26,
2016 I set a towel down on the beach chair. I was so excited to make the third day of vacation
GREAT!!!! SPLASH! I threw myself into the water. I came up, smiling. Can we do it again? I asked.
Everybody, except for Mom glared at me. Mom simply said, No, Isabel. I shrugged and went over to
the beach lounge chair things. Then I went to the pool. I tried a simple, fun obstacle course. At the
third obstacle, I tipped back in the pool s water! After a few backflips, I went back to see my mom. I
was as cold as ice as I skipped merrily over to the beach chairs. I settled down in a chair with a towel
covering me. I waved to my mom, who was sitting in the chair next to me. Do you want to go on the
water slide with me? It will be fun! Please? Mom asked. I could sense the urge in her eyes, though it
didn t match her words or facial expression. I I screamed at the top of my lungs until I finally got to
my senses during the part that provided enjoyment. I realized it was making me happy and
relaxed!!!!!!!! Ten times as usual, actually! Happy as a humming hummingbird, I told my mom about
my HONEST opinion. Sorry I screamed. That was awesome! I said. I decided to chill out in the hot
tub for maybe 5 minutes. After that, I was desperate to go on the slide over and over and over and over
and over again! Shortly

Hold on... They are funded by DARPA? That s weird. What s a defense agency funding an ionosphere

True, the main purpose the contractors had in mind was to detect anomalies in the ionosphere by

Similarities Between Anthem And Fahrenheit 451
Can you fathom a world where everything is peaceful and predetermined? The novella Anthem by Ayn
Rand and the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury depict futures where everything is predetermined
and violence, betrayal, and deception are virtually non existent. In Anthem this dystopia puts humanity
into a dark age, which halts evolution and progression. This digression of humanity is the result of
Collectivist ideals as proposed throughout the novella, one instance is where Rand writes, There is
nothing to take a man s freedom away from him, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his
brothers. That is freedom. That and nothing else. (Rand, 70) These collectivist ways caused children to

this causes people to pursue careers that they detest and loath. ... Show more content on

How Video Games Changed Throughout History
From Fad to Phenomenon: How Video Games Changed Throughout History
Around the middle of the 20th Century man cultures started to grow beyond what they previously
were thanks to different mediums (such as television and music) helping to push boundaries; with this
came the birth of pop culture. Considering pop culture is a shortened version of popular culture it s
clear that many of the things in pop culture would be short lived. The short lived trends and
happenings are labeled as fads . Strangely enough, some fads progress beyond their short lifespan and
actually become a mainstay in the varying international cultures. One such example might be familiar
as it is common in today s society. This example is, indeed, video games. When video games were
first being introduced to the general public, they weren t all that exciting. Most gaming took place in
arcades and most arcades didn t have many game cabinets due to their being very few games to begin
with. However, all of this changed when the Atari 2600 was released. At the time, Atari was known for
their home computers and their hit arcade game Pong . Though the Atari 2600 might not have been the
first video game system, it was definitely the most successful at that time and a great success for Atari
s first attempt at a home video game console. Thanks to the success of the 2600, video games began to
take off and arcades started popping up all over the world with hits like Pac Man and Donkey Kong .

The Ideological Concept Of Insanity Defense
The ideological concept of an insanity defense, formerly termed complete madness, was originally
incorporated into the English common law jurisprudence system in the late thirteenth century of the
United Kingdom as an affirmative defense for defendants under the yoke of criminal charges
involving a heinous action which could involve the option of termination of a defendant s life if
adjudge guilty of such act (Hill). Through such incorporation of a legal defense, the institution of a
new societal grouping known commonly as the criminally insane became expounded, as well as, the
legal opportunity allowing for self declaration of being innocent by reason of mental illness or defect
(or, the insanity defense). Those criminally insane are a subset of the prison population who have been
deemed to have committed their crimes under the influence of a mental disease/disorder, or who were
not in a condition of intellect during the time of the crime to comprehend the illegality or immorality
of their offense (Frontline). Only if the defendant has plead insanity before the court can they be
considered a truly criminally insane inmate. There are manifold condemnations sustained by the
judicial system ranging from guilty but insane to not guilty by reason of insanity, as well as the legal
states of incompetency and diminished capacity. This distinction has become a substance of federal
law, but as soon as a defendant is convicted, the treatment of the convicted individual is left

The Pear Tree In The Full Tree Of Janie s Life

budding, growing, dying, and being reborn. Each relationship represents another cycle that she faces,
and it is also the catalyst for her pursuit of self discovery. She is captivated by the way the bee
interacts with the tree and identifies it as an ideally harmonious relationship. Janie is stirred
tremendously by the tree because it intoxicates her with the beautiful interactions of nature (10). The
bee and the tree symbolize a union in which there is neither control nor command, but rather an
effortless interaction. She becomes enthralled with the concept of harmony and embarks on a journey

The Importance Of The Louisiana Purchase
In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with France despite personal
qualms of its constitutionality. The Louisiana Territory nearly doubled the size of the United States,
including the major port city of New Orleans. Despite his personal reading of the Constitution,
Jefferson understood that it was more important for the country to act decisively and buy the land than
to await an amendment to the Constitution. Jefferson, acting within the right of the president to
negotiate treaties, pursued the Louisiana Purchase primarily due to the political threat of the nearby
French territory and the economic importance of New Orleans. On several occasions, Jefferson
recognized the danger that France s ownership of the Louisiana territory poses to American liberty. In
a letter to Robert Livingston, Jefferson boldly announced that France placing herself in that door
assumes to us the attitude of defiance. Jefferson asserted that France s control over New Orleans
presents a direct threat to the United States. Later on, Jefferson wrote, The day that France takes
possession of New Orleans fixes the sentence which is to restrain her forever within her low

Letter to Livingston ). From his perspective, any French control in the Louisiana territory, especially
of New Orleans, would force the United States into an alliance with Britain, leading to an inevitable

The Way I See It, Each City Is A Clean Slate
The way I see it, each city is a clean slate. A fresh start. I can go, wear whatever I want, have every
experience I can, and work anywhere, then move. My grandfather was the inventor of Pop Rocks, so I
can live where ever and do whatever. There are literally no limits to what I can and will do with my

Here in New York, I m living the idealistic Tumblr aesthetic lifestyle, in my studio apartment with an

Three hours later, I m standing behind a two foot, wood counter with a black tee shirt and skinny jeans

Durkheim Is Dead! Macro vs. Micro Beliefs Essay
I have grouped the sociologists in Durkheim is Dead into three groups: macro to micro, micro and
macro, and micro to macro. I did not place any one of the individuals into just the macro or just the
micro categories. Each one fell into a group that I considered to be in between. In the macro to micro
category, each sociological theory concentrated on one major problem of society and then went on to
explain what would have to be done within individuals in order to achieve social progress. Durkheim s
focus was upon the division of labor being the primary cause of social problems (Berger 123). For Du
Bois, the concentration was on racial issues; I have faith in the power of freedom and democracy to

Lenin was very close to the Webb s and they all shared similar theories. These people were more
politically minded. Similar to Durkheim s ideas of collective consciousness, Lenin believed that the
ideas of the ruling class became the ideas of the masses (Berger 111). Lenin focused on societal
groups and how the individual is stuck within their class. He believed that the working class was being
exploited and that society must work towards eliminating this confusion of who should be in charge
by forcing the working class to prevail. B. Webb felt there was a relationship between crime poverty.
She focused on politics as being the reason for poverty. She said, One must remedy the political order
to help poor people.... It was the structure of society that was at fault, not the individual (Berger 130).
The next category, macro and micro, was a group in and of itself. Only one sociologist fell into this
division. The theories that defined this category oscillated between the effects of society on the
individual and visa versa, the effect the individual on society. Simmel blatantly says, My view is
somewhere in the middle (Berger 94). Simmel s studies were often those of ordinary things people do
in the daily routine of life. He was interested in sociation and how individuals reacted to and
interacted with other individuals. He saw these

Definition Essay On Sacrifice
When you go in search of honey, you must expect to be stung by bees. ― Joseph Joubert. According
the Merriam Webster Dictionary sacrifice is defined as destruction or surrender of something for the
sake of something else . The second definition is something given up or lost . Do you really
understand the definition of sacrifice? Have you ever felt like you ve sacrificed something for a
greater gain? Sacrifice can be a hard thing to do sometimes but the action that belongs to the word has
changed the course of history time after time. To better understand the meaning of sacrifice and what
it encompasses we must first look at its synonyms. The Merriam Webster Dictionary list terms such as
forfeit , yield , surrender . offer , and suffer . These terms suggest that some sort of struggle might
have ensued leaving another to sacrifice which they may have not been ready to give. The implication
is that if you re sacrificing your losing, or if you re sacrificing your becoming submissive. It also
suggests that people that sacrifice had no other choice but to do so. While for some this maybe the
case for all it is not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Satisfier
In the Article Doing better but feeling worse: Looking for the best job undermines satisfaction,
researchers studied the satisfaction levels and decision making outcomes between those with
maximizing tendencies compared to those with satisfier tendencies. The study was designed around
the argument that, though maximizers appear to be less happy than satisfiers, are the maximizers using
strategies that objectively result in better outcomes (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006)? Based on that
central argument, two hypotheses were developed for this study. The first hypothesis was based on the
topics of choices and decision making; it stated that the maximizers, compared to satisfiers, would put
in more time to collect information from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another issue area was both the characteristics of the participant sample and the various groups of
participants in the study. The age range that was used for this study, though it ranged from 21 57, was
still highly skewed towards a younger sample with a median age of 21. Age is a factor that could have
contributed to lower satisfaction levels because it suggests that this might have been the first real job
search and job itself that many of these individuals had (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006). There could
have been more stress and lower satisfaction rates because many of the participants never had a job
relating to their college degree before. Another area of concern relating to the participants is that the
sample was largely female; this could cause a difference in how the results are relating to the
population (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006).
There were also issues with the groups of participants that took part in the study because there were
three groups, T1, T2, and T3, that were involved in the study, but not all of the groups were tested for
all conditions of the study and there were different numbers of participants in each group as well.
Though T2 and T3 stemmed from T1, the groups still had different number of participants because of
the lower response rates (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006). Lastly, a

don ts regarding cross cultural communication on a business level between the Egyptian culture and
general Western culture will be discussed. The essay will explain the differences in listening and
responding in regards to communicating, relationships, and business etiquette. The differences
between Individualism and collectivism will be discussed along with the Power stance outline in Geert
Hofstede s cultural comparison of Egypt and Australia (Hofstede 2013).
Egypt s population is mostly dominated by one culture with (94%) following the Sunni Islamic faith.
The rest of the population is made up of a Coptic Christian faith following (6%) (Commisceo Global
2014). With such a dominant presences of Islamic faith in the community, day to day business is
conducted heavily around their customs. In Geert Hofstede s comprehensive research into national
values throughout the world we can see the many difference and similarities between different cultures
all around the world.
In Hofstede s findings Egypt is considered a collectivistic society. Unlike many western cultures the
general population is committed to putting the needs of the community above their own. Their social

Japan and the global in the 1970s and 1980s. MEI s success in this period came from its
diversification of productions, dominance domestic market, unique corporate culture, and divisional
structure in both domestic and international market. However, in 1987, under new circumstances, such

Therefore, Matsushita created a small business environment in which all MEI s divisions could
maintain its growth and flexibility. The core of Matsushita s divisional structure was One product One
Division system in which each product line was managed by a separate autonomous division that was
expected to operate as if it were an independent corporation. Corporate management provided division
with initial fund, and the corporate treasury operated essentially like a commercial bank. Divisions
deposit their excess funds and received normal market interest. Request for additional corporate funds
to meet expansion plans were submitted as loan applications to the central finance department. This
organizational system generate a high level of internal competition among divisions, and helped drive
new product development that managers saw as their best way to maintain long term growth and
profitability. The need to fund new product development also drove managers to maximize
performance of existing products.
MEI managed the international business by categorizing its overseas branches and plants into three
groups: The A group, the wholly owned single product global sourcing plants that reported primarily
to the relevant product divisions of MEI and were tightly controlled by them; the B group was the
multi product sales and manufacturing subsidiaries that reported to corporate overseas management

Abstract The main objective of this research paper is to propose a mobile solution for those students
who are registered with course of bachelor engineering technology program. We have seen over the
years that the process of manual records has been carried out across almost all educational institutions.
The process is not only time consuming but also sometimes inefficient resulting in the false marking
of attendance. To discourage the student s above mentioned attitude towards learning; a mobile
application has been designed, developed and tested for android platform. The paper describes the step
by step design and development techniques process of android application which can be utilized as an
integral component of learning model of engineering education anywhere.
Today, we need not maintain pen and paper based records and other related stuffs.

Analysis Of Toni Morrison s Beloved
Throughout American history there have been multiple instances of inequality between races, classes,
and genders. Toni Morrison s novel Beloved is a story that truly shows how oppressive slavery was
during the setting of the book. Similarly to the inequality faced during the time of slavery, while
Morrison was writing the her novel the issue of women s equality was present, and being fought for.
Morrison, through Beloved, is able to show the world her views on inequality, and how it is still
present in life today. Morrison is African American, she was born into a family of four children with a
hard working father. He was primarily a welder, but also did other things to provide for the family. She
credits her parents for founding her love of reading and music. She lived in an integrated
neighborhood, but did not become aware of segregation until she was older. When she was in first
grade she was the only black child in her class, and she was also the only one who couldn t read, but
no one then thought less of her for this. Morrison kept pursuing her education, but she got married to a
man who she later was separated from, and he moved back to Jamaica. She was a single mother,
which is just like Sethe. Morrison takes care of her kids without much male influence which is a big
deal during 1980. Prior to beginning her Beloved, Morrison decided to leave her job. She was free of
her obligations for the first time after doing this. I was happy, free in a way I had never been,

displays, maintaining physical inventory, providing product seminars, taking customer orders and
accustoming with store sales people. The promotions for CGC products were done through golf

The Age Of Manufacturing That Preceded The Romantic Movement
The age of manufacturing that preceded the Romantic Movement was characterized by
industrialization and scientific, professional thinking. The philosophy of the era teaches that thoughts
and assertions are only meaningful if they can be confirmed with evidence or valid reasoning. As a
result, any assertion about entities from the abstract or conceptual alike, whether a statement about
mermaids and unicorns or God and nature, is considered meaningless since they cannot be confirmed
by factual report. This all started changing when the future leaders of the enlightenment decided that
we should resort to more emotional thinking. Jean Jacques Rousseau, one of the leaders of the
enlightenment observed that science was transforming Europe into unemotional machines. He says,
Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains...Let us return to nature. (Schaeffer 154) Rousseau
foresaw a threat to general freedom of thought, which thus sparked the Romantic Movement. Two
poets that romanced nature during this era were: William Wordsworth (1770 1850) and John Keats
(1795 1821). To Autumn by John Keats and Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey by
William Wordsworth are both comparable and representative of the Romantic Movement. They have
separate techniques and application, but are both recognized as significant works of Romanticism. The
themes in both poems emphasize nature, emotion, and the capacity for wonder and imagination, which
reiterate the sentiments of the era.

The Influence Of Gory Conflicts
It s no surprise that the human race has been fighting amongst itself and running into problems and
issues since the dawn of time. Whether it be as extreme as a war or as simple as a fight with a sibling
or a friend, every human has faced conflict. However, many people choose to respond to their
problems through violence and firepower to bully the other opposing side into submission. While this,
at times, is an extremely effective method, sometimes, it isn t the best choice. A much easier way to
respond, with less bloodshed and anguish added, is simply thinking of a way through the conflict and
evaluating what can be done about it instead of immediately responding aggressively. If more people

Impeccably true to its definition, the Chinese characters for revolution literally mean elimination of
life , proved by China s catastrophic cultural revolution. Communist leader Mao Zedong sought to

very abrupt shock as they had to conform to the decision. As something that opinionated, it allows
news media to explore and write about such a topic. The following day after the case was presented to
the Supreme Justices, the Dallas Morning News paper gave a few remarks about how the federal
government stood alongside the state of Mississippi in the Supreme Court and pleaded for delay in
further desegregation... 1 The use of the federal government in this situation is to have the reader
sympathize with Mississippi and is even followed by pleaded to further the sympathy. The
government shared the frustrations of black school children... 1 is written to try to balance out the
biased opinion but when children is used instead of students, it creates a belittling picture of their
opposition. The administration s chief civil rights lawyer, Jerris Leonard, was quoted saying that both
the North and South had made substantial breakthroughs in desegregation of schools... but that

A Brief Note On Pedestrian Detection Of Surveillance
Pedestrian Detection in Surveillance
Abstract
Pedestrian detection is fragmented as there are numerous algorithms used in different research. This
research aims to provide an overview to understand the current state of pedestrian detection as well as
analyse the challenges, effectiveness, accuracy and cost benefit of different approaches used in
surveillance and how current challenges are being tackled.
Introduction
Pedestrian detection is a key problem in computer vision. There are a number of ways that makes it
difficult to achieve without faults due to the differences in colour, motion, orientation and poses of
individual human beings but also segregation of the background which may or may not be cluttered as
well as other moving objects that just might get in the way.
Even though it is a difficult matter it is still a major research areas as there a great implications of
perfecting the system. Key application could include in the field of surveillance, robotics as well as a
tool in vehicular safety. It can also be used in a commercial apects as businesses would be able to
count the number of pedestrians creating a flow statistics for optimizing their business. For it to be
effective it should be able to handle emerging complex scenarios such as speed of detection for
vehicles to enable them to avoid or stop immediately and the accuracy in detecting pedestrian through
a crowd for businesses. These applications can also then be forwarded to surveillance as factors

Separation Of Church And State In The Middle Ages
Throughout time the relationship between church and state has been changing. Church and state
should have absolute separation. In the middle ages, the pope was essentially the king, and that ended
in drama between popes and actual kings, as well as the line between politics and religion being
blurred. Church should not be involved in state because the church leader is then at significant risk of
devaluing one or the other, and state should not be involved in church as it was during Charlemagne s
time.
In the middle ages the church and the state were very much related. The church was less related to
religion than it was to government. Religion in the middle ages was related to politics, so rather than
the leader of a faith, the pope was more like a king; he supposedly possessed the power to send people
to hell by excommunicating them if they displeased him. The pope was the leader of the church, and
also the leader of essentially everything else; he had the final say in all matters. There was a conflict ...

Mixing the two never works because they are meant to stay separate. John 18:36 says, My kingdom is
not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be
delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. The pope, or any other church leader is
an official appointed by God through his children to lead his kingdom on earth. God s Holy Bible
clearly states that earth is not God s kingdom; earth is fallen and wicked; the world is the devil s
kingdom. Therefore God s appointed officials should not try to rule Satan s kingdom. This does not
mean, however, that it is sinful to get involved in politics, instead that Ministers and Holy men should
not attempt to occupy both positions for risk of losing track of the line that separates religion and
politics and slip back into a papic dictatorship as in the middle

Flowers For Alggernon In Flowers For Algernon
Was Charlie better off before or after the operation?
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is about Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled 37 year old that is
offered a one in a lifetime chance of being intelligent by having an operation. Although the operation
works and he becomes very intelligent, he slowly loses his intelligence later on. Although Charlie has
lost his I.Q which is his intelligence, he has still kept his E.Q which is his emotional intelligence.
Charlie also has the involvement of going through all of that which transforms him as a person and he
does not let anyone take advantage of him anymore. This shows that Charlie is still better off after the
operation than before.
To begin, Charlie is still better off after the surgery because he now has E.Q, or emotional intelligence
unlike he did before he got the operation. Before the operation, Charlie did not understand the
emotions of people. For instance, the entry on April 15 (Keyes 291) tells us that when Charlie and Ms.
Kinnian were talking, Ms. Kinnian got something in her eye and had to go into the ladies room, but
we knew that she was actually crying, an example of dramatic irony. This displays that before the
operation, Charlie does not know the emotional standpoint of people, but after the operation Charlie
does. To demonstrate, after Charlie had the operation but lost his intelligence, Charlie went into Ms.
Kinnians class acting like he used to before the operation. Then, he said, She startid to cry

Eminent Domain Essay example
Eminent Domain is the government s right under the Fifth Amendment to acquire privately owned
property for public use to build a road, a school or a courthouse. Under eminent domain, the
government buys your property, paying you what s determined to be fair market value. In recent years,
there has been much debate over the appropriateness of eminent domain, and further its legality in
specific instances. The government is allowed to seize personal property for private use if they can
prove that doing it will serve what s called the public good . There have been many cases brought up
against the government in attempt to regulate the government s power in seizing private property.
There is a political push for reform to the eminent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
ft for homes in a specific neighborhood. In an area with older houses, many of these qualifications
may not be met, which would in turn classify certain houses as blighted. This does not imply that the
homeowners have failed to maintain there property properly, but infers that the area can be used for a
higher and better use.
Amongst topics of conversation regarding eminent domain, one will find regulatory usage of land,
seizing of land for public use, and the most controversial of late, the seizing of land from a private
owner and giving it to a more economically beneficial, often politically connected private owner. Kelo
v New London (US 2005), has prompted dozens of proposals to reform eminent domain practices
legislatively. Most of these proposals would restrict the use of eminent domain to transfer property
from one private individual to another. It is one thing to have a city claim property to further the
development of the city by building roads, schools, etc. It is another thing altogether for the
government to seize a property so as to gain money from higher taxation. For many years, however,
courts have read the public use restraint broadly, enabling governments to take property from one
owner, often small and powerless, and transfer it to another, often large and politically connected, all
in the name of economic development, urban renewal, or job creation.
With the media s focus on cases like Kelo v New London, the public is

Parental Grief Essay
The Continuing Process of Parental Grief Also, sometimes a parent s love makes them unable to let
go. I ve seen so many parents put their needs above their infant s because they just can t bear to suffer
the grief of losing a child. It s heartbreaking when you can see parents in total denial and you know
that the end will come one way or another but they just can t accept it. I don t know if that s the case
here or not, but it s certainly a possibility. Parental Grief The theme of parental mourning has been a
universal one throughout the centuries. In the literature on bereavement, writers repeat certain themes,
thoughts, and reflections; they talk of the powerful and often conflicting emotions involved in the pain
of grief and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet, these parents have to accept that they will never be able to live their lives with or share their love
openly with the child. So they must find ways to hold on to the memories. Many bereaved parents
come to learn that memories are the precious gifts of the heart...[that they need] these memories and
whispers, to help create a sense of inner peace, a closeness (Wisconsin Perspectives Newsletter,
Spring 1989, 1). Grieving parents say that their grief is a lifelong process, a long and painful process...
a process in which [they] try to take and keep some meaning from the loss and life without the [child]
(Arnold and Gemma 1983, 57). After a child s death, parents embark on a long, sad journey that can
be very frightening and extremely lonely a journey that never really ends. The hope and desire that
healing will come eventually is an intense and persistent one for grieving parents. The child who died
is considered a gift to the parents and family, and they are forced to give up that gift. Yet, as parents,
they also strive to let their child s life, no matter how short, be seen as a gift to others. These parents
seek to find ways to continue to love, honor, and value the lives of their children and continue to make
the child s presence known and felt in the lives of family and friends. Bereaved parents often try to
live their lives more fully and generously because of this painful experience. To those outside the
family, the composition

The Architects Of Their Own Downfall
Please excuse the cliché here, but architects are; the architects of their own downfall. August
Schmarsow likens the role of the architect as similar to a conductor in an orchestra. The conductors of
space . A quite romantic notion, but why has the trust diminished between client and architect? In the
UK, for example, most clients are now seeking developers rather than employ an architect. To which
there is certain logic, why employ an external body who will not only cost more, but may start to
deploy their own ideas onto the scheme? Surely the client calls the shots because of their larger
wallet? Here in lies the problem. Developers, Town Planners and Surveyors are all number based
professions, a series of calculations dictating spatial qualities and aesthetic appeal. How many
bedrooms can we fit in, what is the cost of the project, what kind of profits can we make? All
questions that the client will be more than content with when dealing with said professions. The
architect is seen as the rebel of the building profession; forever pushing limits to design, aesthetics,
engineering and spatial quality. The architect brings a unique quality to the design team, a
consideration for all aspects. Be that of scale, cost, materiality, spatial, detailing, servicing, romantics,
social implications, theoretical aspirations. The list goes on and on. But this is the point; it is this wide
consideration that makes the architect a disposable and superfluous piece of the design

The Political Spectrum Of South Africa
With the advent spread of the English language during the colonial conquests the world had undergone
a vast array of changes, and some of these changes that seems to have gone unnoticed for some part is
how deeply the English language has impacted and changed a country s identity entirely. Then the
question arises whether those changes are in fact beneficial or detrimental for language acquisition
and maintenance for future generations to come. This essay will focus on my country of choice, South
Africa, and will discuss how three different dimensions have been impacted by the English language. I
will first focus on the historical dimensions to gain a better understanding of the circumstances within
South Africa in the past and in today s context, especially how the English language had arrived and
completely shaped South Africa as a whole. Furthermore, following the historical impact, this essay
will go deeper into the political spectrum of South Africa, and discuss how the country shifted from
the Apartheid era to its contemporary state. Lastly, I will discuss how the educational system has
impacted the growing new generation to get a clearer understanding of how the country has been
changed to adapt to the more globalised world that we live in now and will raise some questions about
how language, being one of the key aspects that makes us human, could be wilfully applied for
coercion into a chosen form of hegemony, and will thus demonstrate the importance of language in

Red Flags Essay
The business risks the Red Flags Rules were implemented by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
also known as the federal bank regulatory agencies and the National Credit Union Administration.
These agencies as well as Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 grant financial
institutions and creditors to implement written identity theft programs, (Cleverly, Song, Cleverly,
2011). Furthermore, the purpose of these programs is to provide identification, detection, and response
to patterns, practices, or specific activities known as red flags that could potentially indicate identity
theft, (Cleverly, Song, Cleverly, 2003). A subject entity may demonstrate compliance with the Red

  • 2. Capote s Narrative Voice Throughout the novel, Capote appoints several narrative voices. For example, in the first paragraph within lines 1 12, Capote is speaking himself with the use of third person narration. During this paragraph, he describes the setting of the novel and uses imagery to portray its scenery. Within his description of Holcomb, Kansas, the town is perceived as quiet and lonesome, where nothing out of the ordinary occurs. In this section he speaks in a calm tone, creating a calm setting, which is ironic due to all of the chaos that arises in it. Another narrative voice, on page 66, is spoken by Alfred Stoecklein, a man who lived close to the Clutter family. Within this passage, he is talking about how terrifying it was to assimilate to the trauma that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

U.S. Silica produces fiber glass, face powders, tooth paste, roofing shingles, etc. They manufacture fiber glass the most. Airplanes, boats, and truck are some of the consumers that use fiberglass the most. Sand mining also extracts important minerals like zircon, and rutile which both contain useful elements for industrial purposes. One key point that was made about mining is that the total economic impact of mining annually is 1.9 trillion. On the U.S. Silica mines website they list six areas that are their strongest. They also have kaolin which is a white type of clay. They try to stay away from working with the kaolin because it s sticky and hard to deal with. They also do very little frac mining. The frac mining process has several steps. Before frac mining can began all vegetation must be removed from the area. Then to reach the target sandstone, all unwanted rock layers has to be removed. Thirdly the top of the sandstone has to be exposed and since frac sand is cemented together explosive charges has to be placed inside holes drilled near the edge of the mine so the sandstone can break into small pieces. Then loaders are driven in to scoop up sandstones from near the wall of the mine pit. After the loaders scoop up the sandstones they send the sandstones to a crusher which breaks down the large chunks into individual sand grains. Sand grains are then washed to remove any unwanted particles. Once it has been washed, it is stockpiled for drying, sorting, and the final shipment. After the final shipment mine reclamation is started which is when the mined pit is filled back up with rocks and other materials that were not used from the sandstones and the new surface eventually be replanted. Regular sand mining at the U.S. silica is similar to this process except that there is no need for the explosives process because the sand is already soft and comes apart ... • 4. Public Broadcasting in the Article “Moving beyond the... In their article Moving beyond the Vast Wasteland , Laurie Ouellette and Justin Lewis critique how public broadcasting functions in the US. Liberal reformers hold to the view that television needs protection from commercialism. The liberal reformer view contains cultural and class hierarchies. They believe that public television is for the white, college educated middle class viewer who has cultural capital (Ouellette Lewis, 96). As a result, funding for public broadcasting has gone primarily towards high culture and intellectual programs and not sitcoms or other popular forms of television. Ouellette and Lewis disagree with this, saying that these types of high brow programming are not the only ones worthy of public investment. Instead, they argue that popular programs that are being commercially maintained also merit public support and investment (96). Rather than reserving public broadcasting for more educational programming, the authors argue that there is a more progressive solution that can incorporate popular media forms while still veering away from commercialization. Thus far, pubic television has failed to adopt popular media forms. Public television stations such as PBS failed to attract larger and more diverse audiences because they kept their programming intellectual and dull rather than building on popular aspects of television culture. Ouellette and Lewis argue that PBS could have incorporated sitcoms, soaps, and sports into their programming and then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Using Web 2.0, Facebook, And Diy Cultural Citizenship Essay Writing and Inquiry Assignment 2 Dylan Hannah. Power to the people? web 2.0, Facebook ,and DIY cultural citizenship in Aotearoa New Zealand. By Ian Goodwin. The aim of Ian Goodwin s article Power to the people? web 2.0, Facebook ,and DIY cultural citizenship in Aotearoa New Zealand is to fuel a more informed and critically diverse debate on the values of web 2.0 as so far most of the conversation on this topic has been children s safety on the internet .The target audience is fairly wide however given that the article is from MediaNZ it is safe to assume that the principle demographic this is aimed toward Media Studies students ,and teachers. Goodwin uses a range of strategies to fuel the broader discussion on the values of web 2.0: Repeated words with the purpose of accustoming the audience to the words, Target audience as a strategy with the purpose to gain a more informed and critical discussion and structural placement with the purpose of highlighting the global and local importance of web 2.0. The title is significant in revealing the authors intentions to make the article a debate rather than something with a correct ,or incorrect answer. The question mark is interesting because it is the first thing that the reader sees ,and it begins make them question what they already know and don t know about this topic. It is already making them analyse where they stand on this issue ,and why. I tend to think that making the given audience already think before they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Descriptive/Values of the People: The people that adhered to this religion were the Persians of the Persian Empire that dated from 550 330 B.C. and was located from Anatolia and Egypt across western Asia to northern India and Central Asia. The Persian society was patriarchal but the women were seen as very valuable in society and experienced much more equality than any other women of different empires. The economy was mostly based on trade which brought the provinces and the entire empire together and more integrated. Some other important values of the people are also shown through the passages that state that the cultivation of the individual and civic virtues of everyone, including women, following the laws and avoiding being dishonest, caring for the poor, and loyalty to the church should be important for every Zoroastrian. Pourandokht was the first queen of Persia and it shows that women had quite a lot of equality and could participate in politics and ruling of the empire. Origin Story: Zoroastrianism was created by a prophet named Zoroaster, or can also be referred as Ahura Mazda, who was also considered the god of the religion. Zoroaster grew up in a polytheistic religion, where they had animal sacrifices and crazy rituals. The Zoroastrianism religion was created where they were against slaves, animal sacrifices, and only believed in one god (Monotheistic), this shows that his cultural influences growing up was a big influence on what he believed in when creating this religion. • 7. Effects Of Dutch Colonization Of Indonesia Dutch colonization is one of the main influences on modern Indonesia. According to Dutch Colonization the Dutch controlled Indonesia for nearly 300 years which sprouted many nationalistic ideas (Dutch Par 2). Indonesia later became independent in 1945 with other countries such as the United States of America recognizing it as an independent nation. Dutch occupation directly affected the modern Indonesian political scene, the global spice trade and local Indonesian religion. Dutch colonialism has greatly influenced the Indonesian governmental system. Dutch occupation began in the 1600s where the Dutch established Indonesia as a Dutch colony forcefully using superior weapons and firepower. Dutch colonialism was extremely harsh with various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dutch colonization took hold of one of the largest producers of spice in the world Indonesia and its entire supply of spice. The Dutch controlled the global spice market by controlling the amount of spice produced to increasing demand in Europe causing the price of spice to increase to make the maximum amount of profit effectively monopolizing it through force numerous trade routes were developed with neighbouring countries (Wright Par 4) . Eventually, as the Dutch lost control of Indonesia, the amount of spice was not regulated causing the price of spice to decrease as it would be more accessible and be sold in larger quantities. The Dutch had amazing business skills and took advantage of what they could in Indonesia and monopolized the spice trade. This caused them to gain great amounts of profit with no real competition. This, however, was lost as they lost control over Indonesia causing the supply of spice to increase and spices native to Indonesia to be grown elsewhere. The global market for spice then drastically changed with spice becoming more accessible removing the barrier of exclusivity causing spice to be less valuable. • 8. Summary Of Invisible Man, Hamlet, And Crime And Punishment Out of all the books we ve read this year, in my opinion Invisible Man, Hamlet, and Crime and Punishment did the best job of showing me what the world outside education was like. These books do the best job because they depict very different lives from mine: they are narrated by men, one African American, one Russian, and one Danish royalty three identities that I do not claim for myself. If we re going to learn about the world, I might as well learn about worlds other than my own (which I d say I m pretty familiar with). A common theme throughout the books I ve chosen is a problem with the binaries society presents us, whether it be racial, moral or internal. The conflicts addressed in these books often spring from a failure to find a balance, or an endeavor to find out where in the middle you belong. Crime and Punishment is a prime example of the dangers of seeing in black and white. Raskolnikov s existence is a grey area, because although he s a murderer, the reader is sort of rooting for him. To me, Crime and Punishment is about the different tones morality can take. Raskolnikov is a murderer, but to him, and maybe some of the readers, he is justified in his act. This crime doesn t define him as a moral or immoral person, that is for the reader to decide. Sonya is a similar example of the fluidity of morality, because she s a prostitute, but does so to help her family and also provides crucial moral guidance to Rodya. Although I have no moral qualms with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Example Of Peer Review I have always found the peer review process to be beneficial on both ends, whether you are the writer or the reader, are being reviewed or are the reviewer. Having multiple sets of eyes proofread your paper should help more than hurt. It is your choice if you want to take the advice your peers gave. You have the option of not making any changes at all, so whether you decide to take the advice or not, it does not hurt to receive them. In Paper One, I found that peer reviewing others was a bit difficult because any comments made could be offending them. I felt that I would come off as criticizing the kind of person one is, instead of one s work since the assignment was to write about something that is personal. In Sarah Jackson s UGA s Greatest ... One of the jurors Armstrong said that she views Wilds as the person one would go to, if one gets into trouble, and therefore she believed that Wild s story was realistic, and the truth. • 11. Essay on House of Sand and Fog I read House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III. This story is one of classic tragedy which also contains a nearly unbearable amount of suspense. It tells a story of the conflict between people of different races who have an inability to understand each other. They each want possession of a small house in the California hills but for very different reasons. On one side, there is Kathy Nicolo and Sheriff Lester Burdon who want the house from which Kathy was evicted. He is very wise but has a quick temper that he usually controls. Mrs. Behrani is a kind woman but not very smart and cannot speak English very well. Esmail is a very kindhearted person who wants to help Kathy even though it conflicts with his family being able to keep the house. This book combines characteristics of a suspense thriller with those of a tragedy and is a very interesting book to read. I liked the detail that the author went into about the psychological aspects of the characters in making the decisions that they made. I thought that the characters were well developed and I liked the detail that the author went into about the settings. A detailed setting can really increase the intensity and realism of a situation in a book. This book contained some difficult words that lower level readers might not understand. I would recommend that anyone looking for a suspense/tragedy oriented book should look to this one. The beginning is a somewhat tedious read, but that is only because the author takes so much time to develop the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novella Anthem by Ayn Rand and the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury depict futures where everything is predetermined and violence, betrayal, and deception are virtually non existent. In Anthem this dystopia puts humanity into a dark age, which halts evolution and progression. This digression of humanity is the result of Collectivist ideals as proposed throughout the novella, one instance is where Rand writes, There is nothing to take a man s freedom away from him, save other men. • 17. How Video Games Changed Throughout History From Fad to Phenomenon: How Video Games Changed Throughout History Around the middle of the 20th Century man cultures started to grow beyond what they previously were thanks to different mediums (such as television and music) helping to push boundaries; with this came the birth of pop culture. Considering pop culture is a shortened version of popular culture it s clear that many of the things in pop culture would be short lived. The short lived trends and happenings are labeled as fads . Strangely enough, some fads progress beyond their short lifespan and actually become a mainstay in the varying international cultures. One such example might be familiar as it is common in today s society. This example is, indeed, video games. When video games were first being introduced to the general public, they weren t all that exciting. Most gaming took place in arcades and most arcades didn t have many game cabinets due to their being very few games to begin with. However, all of this changed when the Atari 2600 was released. At the time, Atari was known for their home computers and their hit arcade game Pong . Though the Atari 2600 might not have been the first video game system, it was definitely the most successful at that time and a great success for Atari s first attempt at a home video game console. Thanks to the success of the 2600, video games began to take off and arcades started popping up all over the world with hits like Pac Man and Donkey Kong . These would be the ... The Ideological Concept Of Insanity Defense The ideological concept of an insanity defense, formerly termed complete madness, was originally incorporated into the English common law jurisprudence system in the late thirteenth century of the United Kingdom as an affirmative defense for defendants under the yoke of criminal charges involving a heinous action which could involve the option of termination of a defendant s life if adjudge guilty of such act (Hill). Through such incorporation of a legal defense, the institution of a new societal grouping known commonly as the criminally insane became expounded, as well as, the legal opportunity allowing for self declaration of being innocent by reason of mental illness or defect (or, the insanity defense). Those criminally insane are a subset of the prison population who have been deemed to have committed their crimes under the influence of a mental disease/disorder, or who were not in a condition of intellect during the time of the crime to comprehend the illegality or immorality of their offense (Frontline). Only if the defendant has plead insanity before the court can they be considered a truly criminally insane inmate. There are manifold condemnations sustained by the judicial system ranging from guilty but insane to not guilty by reason of insanity, as well as the legal states of incompetency and diminished capacity. This distinction has become a substance of federal law, but as soon as a defendant is convicted, the treatment of the convicted individual is left ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She is captivated by the way the bee interacts with the tree and identifies it as an ideally harmonious relationship. • 22. The Importance Of The Louisiana Purchase In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with France despite personal qualms of its constitutionality. The Louisiana Territory nearly doubled the size of the United States, including the major port city of New Orleans. Despite his personal reading of the Constitution, Jefferson understood that it was more important for the country to act decisively and buy the land than to await an amendment to the Constitution. Jefferson, acting within the right of the president to negotiate treaties, pursued the Louisiana Purchase primarily due to the political threat of the nearby French territory and the economic importance of New Orleans. On several occasions, Jefferson recognized the danger that France s ownership of the Louisiana territory poses to American liberty. In a letter to Robert Livingston, Jefferson boldly announced that France placing herself in that door assumes to us the attitude of defiance. Jefferson asserted that France s control over New Orleans presents a direct threat to the United States. Later on, Jefferson wrote, The day that France takes possession of New Orleans fixes the sentence which is to restrain her forever within her low watermark... From that moment we must marry ourselves to the British fleet and nation (Jefferson, Letter to Livingston ). From his perspective, any French control in the Louisiana territory, especially of New Orleans, would force the United States into an alliance with Britain, leading to an inevitable ... I did not place any one of the individuals into just the macro or just the micro categories. Each one fell into a group that I considered to be in between. In the macro to micro category, each sociological theory concentrated on one major problem of society and then went on to explain what would have to be done within individuals in order to achieve social progress. The study was designed around the argument that, though maximizers appear to be less happy than satisfiers, are the maximizers using strategies that objectively result in better outcomes (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006)? The age range that was used for this study, though it ranged from 21 57, was still highly skewed towards a younger sample with a median age of 21. Age is a factor that could have contributed to lower satisfaction levels because it suggests that this might have been the first real job search and job itself that many of these individuals had (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006). There could have been more stress and lower satisfaction rates because many of the participants never had a job relating to their college degree before. Another area of concern relating to the participants is that the sample was largely female; this could cause a difference in how the results are relating to the population (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006). There were also issues with the groups of participants that took part in the study because there were three groups, T1, T2, and T3, that were involved in the study, but not all of the groups were tested for all conditions of the study and there were different numbers of participants in each group as well. Though T2 and T3 stemmed from T1, the groups still had different number of participants because of the lower response rates (Iyengar, Wells, Schwartz, 2006). Lastly, a ... The Age Of Manufacturing That Preceded The Romantic Movement The age of manufacturing that preceded the Romantic Movement was characterized by industrialization and scientific, professional thinking. The philosophy of the era teaches that thoughts and assertions are only meaningful if they can be confirmed with evidence or valid reasoning. As a result, any assertion about entities from the abstract or conceptual alike, whether a statement about mermaids and unicorns or God and nature, is considered meaningless since they cannot be confirmed by factual report. This all started changing when the future leaders of the enlightenment decided that we should resort to more emotional thinking. China s Catastrophic Cultural Revolution Impeccably true to its definition, the Chinese characters for revolution literally mean elimination of life , proved by China s catastrophic cultural revolution. Communist leader Mao Zedong sought to eliminate the past and push for a resurrection only to land China miserably behind. By wiping away years of scientific and literary advancements, China renounced its grandiose history and way of life. In 1966, Communist leader Mao Zedong initiated the Cultural Revolution in China intended to reaffirm his domination over the Chinese government, drastically affecting the lives of nearly everyone in China. • 44. The Case Of Alexander Vs. Holmes County Board Of Education The topic I ll be discussing will be the biasedness in media about a particular topic, the US Supreme Court s decision on the case of Alexander vs. Holmes County Board of Education. The case involved a previous Supreme Court ruling of Brown vs. Board of Education, where they gave schools to desegregate public schools with all deliberate speed. 15 years passed and school districts were still segregated, so the courts gave them till the beginning of the next year, 1970. This gave some schools a very abrupt shock as they had to conform to the decision. As something that opinionated, it allows news media to explore and write about such a topic. The following day after the case was presented to the Supreme Justices, the Dallas Morning News paper gave a few remarks about how the federal government stood alongside the state of Mississippi in the Supreme Court and pleaded for delay in further desegregation... 1 The use of the federal government in this situation is to have the reader sympathize with Mississippi and is even followed by pleaded to further the sympathy. The government shared the frustrations of black school children... 1 is written to try to balance out the biased opinion but when children is used instead of students, it creates a belittling picture of their opposition. The administration s chief civil rights lawyer, Jerris Leonard, was quoted saying that both the North and South had made substantial breakthroughs in desegregation of schools... but that ... • 45. A Brief Note On Pedestrian Detection Of Surveillance Pedestrian Detection in Surveillance Abstract Pedestrian detection is fragmented as there are numerous algorithms used in different research. This research aims to provide an overview to understand the current state of pedestrian detection as well as analyse the challenges, effectiveness, accuracy and cost benefit of different approaches used in surveillance and how current challenges are being tackled. Introduction Pedestrian detection is a key problem in computer vision. There are a number of ways that makes it difficult to achieve without faults due to the differences in colour, motion, orientation and poses of individual human beings but also segregation of the background which may or may not be cluttered as well as other moving objects that just might get in the way. Even though it is a difficult matter it is still a major research areas as there a great implications of perfecting the system. Key application could include in the field of surveillance, robotics as well as a tool in vehicular safety. It can also be used in a commercial apects as businesses would be able to count the number of pedestrians creating a flow statistics for optimizing their business. For it to be effective it should be able to handle emerging complex scenarios such as speed of detection for vehicles to enable them to avoid or stop immediately and the accuracy in detecting pedestrian through a crowd for businesses. These applications can also then be forwarded to surveillance as factors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Separation Of Church And State In The Middle Ages Throughout time the relationship between church and state has been changing. Church and state should have absolute separation. In the middle ages, the pope was essentially the king, and that ended in drama between popes and actual kings, as well as the line between politics and religion being blurred. Church should not be involved in state because the church leader is then at significant risk of devaluing one or the other, and state should not be involved in church as it was during Charlemagne s time. In the middle ages the church and the state were very much related. The church was less related to religion than it was to government. Religion in the middle ages was related to politics, so rather than the leader of a faith, the pope was more like a king; he supposedly possessed the power to send people to hell by excommunicating them if they displeased him. The pope was the leader of the church, and also the leader of essentially everything else; he had the final say in all matters. There was a conflict ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mixing the two never works because they are meant to stay separate. John 18:36 says, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. The pope, or any other church leader is an official appointed by God through his children to lead his kingdom on earth. God s Holy Bible clearly states that earth is not God s kingdom; earth is fallen and wicked; the world is the devil s kingdom. Therefore God s appointed officials should not try to rule Satan s kingdom. This does not mean, however, that it is sinful to get involved in politics, instead that Ministers and Holy men should not attempt to occupy both positions for risk of losing track of the line that separates religion and politics and slip back into a papic dictatorship as in the middle ... • 47. Flowers For Alggernon In Flowers For Algernon Was Charlie better off before or after the operation? Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is about Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled 37 year old that is offered a one in a lifetime chance of being intelligent by having an operation. Although the operation works and he becomes very intelligent, he slowly loses his intelligence later on. Although Charlie has lost his I.Q which is his intelligence, he has still kept his E.Q which is his emotional intelligence. Charlie also has the involvement of going through all of that which transforms him as a person and he does not let anyone take advantage of him anymore. This shows that Charlie is still better off after the operation than before. To begin, Charlie is still better off after the surgery because he now has E.Q, or emotional intelligence unlike he did before he got the operation. Before the operation, Charlie did not understand the emotions of people. For instance, the entry on April 15 (Keyes 291) tells us that when Charlie and Ms. Kinnian were talking, Ms. Kinnian got something in her eye and had to go into the ladies room, but we knew that she was actually crying, an example of dramatic irony. This displays that before the operation, Charlie does not know the emotional standpoint of people, but after the operation Charlie does. To demonstrate, after Charlie had the operation but lost his intelligence, Charlie went into Ms. Kinnians class acting like he used to before the operation. Then, he said, She startid to cry ... • 48. Eminent Domain Essay example Eminent Domain is the government s right under the Fifth Amendment to acquire privately owned property for public use to build a road, a school or a courthouse. Under eminent domain, the government buys your property, paying you what s determined to be fair market value. In recent years, there has been much debate over the appropriateness of eminent domain, and further its legality in specific instances. The government is allowed to seize personal property for private use if they can prove that doing it will serve what s called the public good . There have been many cases brought up against the government in attempt to regulate the government s power in seizing private property. There is a political push for reform to the eminent ... In an area with older houses, many of these qualifications may not be met, which would in turn classify certain houses as blighted. This does not imply that the homeowners have failed to maintain there property properly, but infers that the area can be used for a higher and better use. Amongst topics of conversation regarding eminent domain, one will find regulatory usage of land, seizing of land for public use, and the most controversial of late, the seizing of land from a private owner and giving it to a more economically beneficial, often politically connected private owner. Kelo v New London (US 2005), has prompted dozens of proposals to reform eminent domain practices legislatively. Most of these proposals would restrict the use of eminent domain to transfer property from one private individual to another. It is one thing to have a city claim property to further the development of the city by building roads, schools, etc. It is another thing altogether for the government to seize a property so as to gain money from higher taxation. For many years, however, courts have read the public use restraint broadly, enabling governments to take property from one owner, often small and powerless, and transfer it to another, often large and politically connected, all in the name of economic development, urban renewal, or job creation. With the media s focus on cases like Kelo v New London, the public is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Parental Grief Essay The Continuing Process of Parental Grief Also, sometimes a parent s love makes them unable to let go. I ve seen so many parents put their needs above their infant s because they just can t bear to suffer the grief of losing a child. It s heartbreaking when you can see parents in total denial and you know that the end will come one way or another but they just can t accept it. I don t know if that s the case here or not, but it s certainly a possibility. Parental Grief The theme of parental mourning has been a universal one throughout the centuries. In the literature on bereavement, writers repeat certain themes, thoughts, and reflections; they talk of the powerful and often conflicting emotions involved in the pain of grief and the ... So they must find ways to hold on to the memories. Many bereaved parents come to learn that memories are the precious gifts of the heart...[that they need] these memories and whispers, to help create a sense of inner peace, a closeness (Wisconsin Perspectives Newsletter, Spring 1989, 1). Grieving parents say that their grief is a lifelong process, a long and painful process... a process in which [they] try to take and keep some meaning from the loss and life without the [child] (Arnold and Gemma 1983, 57). After a child s death, parents embark on a long, sad journey that can be very frightening and extremely lonely a journey that never really ends. The hope and desire that healing will come eventually is an intense and persistent one for grieving parents. The child who died is considered a gift to the parents and family, and they are forced to give up that gift. Yet, as parents, they also strive to let their child s life, no matter how short, be seen as a gift to others. These parents seek to find ways to continue to love, honor, and value the lives of their children and continue to make the child s presence known and felt in the lives of family and friends. Bereaved parents often try to live their lives more fully and generously because of this painful experience. To those outside the family, the composition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. The Architects Of Their Own Downfall Please excuse the cliché here, but architects are; the architects of their own downfall. August Schmarsow likens the role of the architect as similar to a conductor in an orchestra. The conductors of space . A quite romantic notion, but why has the trust diminished between client and architect? In the UK, for example, most clients are now seeking developers rather than employ an architect. To which there is certain logic, why employ an external body who will not only cost more, but may start to deploy their own ideas onto the scheme? Surely the client calls the shots because of their larger wallet? Here in lies the problem. Developers, Town Planners and Surveyors are all number based professions, a series of calculations dictating spatial qualities and aesthetic appeal. How many bedrooms can we fit in, what is the cost of the project, what kind of profits can we make? All questions that the client will be more than content with when dealing with said professions. The architect is seen as the rebel of the building profession; forever pushing limits to design, aesthetics, engineering and spatial quality. The architect brings a unique quality to the design team, a consideration for all aspects. Be that of scale, cost, materiality, spatial, detailing, servicing, romantics, social implications, theoretical aspirations. The list goes on and on. But this is the point; it is this wide consideration that makes the architect a disposable and superfluous piece of the design ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. The Political Spectrum Of South Africa With the advent spread of the English language during the colonial conquests the world had undergone a vast array of changes, and some of these changes that seems to have gone unnoticed for some part is how deeply the English language has impacted and changed a country s identity entirely. Then the question arises whether those changes are in fact beneficial or detrimental for language acquisition and maintenance for future generations to come. This essay will focus on my country of choice, South Africa, and will discuss how three different dimensions have been impacted by the English language. I will first focus on the historical dimensions to gain a better understanding of the circumstances within South Africa in the past and in today s context, especially how the English language had arrived and completely shaped South Africa as a whole. Furthermore, following the historical impact, this essay will go deeper into the political spectrum of South Africa, and discuss how the country shifted from the Apartheid era to its contemporary state. Lastly, I will discuss how the educational system has impacted the growing new generation to get a clearer understanding of how the country has been changed to adapt to the more globalised world that we live in now and will raise some questions about how language, being one of the key aspects that makes us human, could be wilfully applied for coercion into a chosen form of hegemony, and will thus demonstrate the importance of language in ...
