Disturbed Thyroid Body
Thyroid and Hair Loss
Disturbed thyroid gland bring a number of health issues with it. Thyroid is one of the most important
gland of our body that contributes in producing hormones that carry out energy, overall health and
metabolism related functions. Malfunctioning in thyroid can bring up a number of health problems
including heart diseases, weight loss or gain and hair loss etc. There are basically two main problems
attached with thyroid glands, one is hyperthyroidism which leads to excessive production of hormones
and the other one is hypothyroidism in which there is underactive thyroid functioning.
Most commonly observed problem is hyperthyroidism, which affects women more than men. It is
responsible for triggering a hair loss condition

My Moral Philosophy From An Organization Perspective
As I attempt to summarize my moral philosophy from an organizational perspective, I believe it will
benefit both the reader and I to establish a basis from which to begin. I have a strong belief in the
ideas of environmentalism, to a certain degree. Our environment plays a significant role in our
development and lends itself to the shaping of our actions. I find there to be an enormous truth to the
words of pioneer psychologist John B. Watson.
Give me a dozen healthy infants, well formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in and I
ll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select:
doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant, chief, and yes, even begger man and thief, regardless of his talents,
penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors. (Watson, 1924, p. 104)
To add context to his concept, he followed this up by stating I am going beyond my facts, and I admit
it, but so have the advocates of the contrary ant they have been doing it for many thousands of years
(p. 104). In addition to the works of Watson, I also developed my moral philosophy from my
involvement with sports from middle school up through a short stint in the Global Basketball
Association. Each level contained its own set of challenges and life lessons that further developed how
I function as a leader within my organization. Clichés such as never cut corners, hard work pays off,
hard but fair, and perfect practice makes

Do Humans Cause Wildfires
Humans cause Ninety percent of wildfires in the U.S., while the remaining ten percent, normally
caused by lightning, lava, etc. Wildfires are uncontrolled fires often occurring in wildland areas;
however, they can spread and consume houses and agricultural resources. Forest sometimes needs
wildfires to get rid of old trees and plants to let new ones grow. During a wildfire, if people told to
leave, they do so. Wildfires often begin unnoticed, so taking minor precautions is helpful.
The common cause of wildfires begin with lightning, human carelessness, volcano eruptions, arson,
and pyroclastic clouds from active volcanoes. Droughts, heat waves, and climate change can also have
a dramatic effect on the danger of wildfires. Although wildfires

Design, Instrumentation And Analytical Tools Essay
The previous chapter focused on the identification and discussion of the theoretical framework, related
theories and the theoretical assertions of previous studies. This chapter identifies the methods, design,
instrumentation and analytical tools. The content of the chapter aims at the identification of
appropriate and suitable methods and the adoption of such within the confines of a systematic design
which clearly stipulates population and sampling procedures; data collection instruments with regards
to variable measurement and operational definitions, instrument reliability and validity as well as
descriptive and inferential statistical tools (Sekaran, 2003; Sarantakos, 2005). 3.2 Research Design
The research design is primarily concerned with the structure and framework of plans within which
empirical activities concerned with research are to be undertaken. It encapsulates concepts such as
population and sample of the study, methodology and characteristic of the study as well as instrument
for generation of data and defines the layout for the entire field work (Sullivan, 2001; Sarantakos,
2005). Similarly, Baridam (2008) describe research design as the basic question of how the focus of
the research will be brought into and how they will be employed within the research setting to obtain
the required information. It is a framework for collecting valid and reliable data to test the hypotheses
and answer the research questions. There are two main types of research

Abuse Of Power In 1984 And Metropolis
To completely understand a text, you must recognise the circumstances that formed the setting for the
event, statement or idea. Context therefore, plays an important role in the opportunities that arise from
exploring the extent of the use and abuse of power in relation to our natural primitive nature. George
Orwell s Nineteen eighty four (1984) published in 1949 and Fritz Lang s Metropolis published in
January, 1927 (remade in 2010) are two texts that evaluate the mechanisms of power in societies that
practice socio political supremacy and tyranny. Orwell and Lang use comprehensive language forms
and features to produce a complex and uncertain fate of humanity. Their ideas, values and attitudes
were influenced by the social, cultural and historical contexts of society at the time.
1984 is a fictional text of a dystopian society that illustrates Orwell s prediction of a future of
oppression and control. It is an attack on totalitarian government where the state controls all aspects of
life and impacts how people perceive, comprehend, and converse about modern social movements.
Power is inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting ...

techniques of symbolism, futuristic landscapes and metaphors to construct a political message that

The Value Homeowners Place On Neighborhood Local Public Goods
The goal of my research is investigate differences in the value homeowners place on neighborhood
local public goods. I define local public goods as either non excludable or non rivalrous neighborhood
amenities such as open space, school quality, and public transportation, and disamenities such as
crime. Previous research has focused on estimating the average value or willingness to pay for these
types of goods. However, just as most preferences can vary by income level, so can the preferences for
local public goods. From a public policy persepctive it is important to understand this heterogeneity so
that local governments can better serve their residents. For example, if low income households value
public transportation more than the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Assuming higher income households purchase more expensive homes, we can anaylze how
preferences for different public goods vary by income. I have acquired data on neighborhood
amenities and disamenities from several sources. This fellowship would allow me to purchase even
more detailed data on open space, nearby public infrastructure and amenities, and crime rates. It
would also allow me to focus more of my time in geocoding houses, open space, roadways, crime, and
census data to get more precise measures of local public goods and account for any spatial correlation
between houses. For several decades researchers have used hedonic theory to estimate the effect of
various local public goods on house prices. These studies have examined the value households place
on a countless number of neighborhood amenities and disamenities, including open space, school
quality, crime, air quality, and nearby public infrastructure. Understanding households willingness to
pay is paramount for local governments, city planners, and policymakers in determining the optimal
provision of various public goods and services. A quick survey of the hedonic literature finds that the
effects of certain public goods on housing prices often vary in their significance, magnitude and
direction. In fact, cite{sirmans2005composition} review over

notional rent and how you can ensure you re getting what your practice is entitled to
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... The opening words of Charles Dickens a Tale of
Two Cities now ring true for GPs and their practices; pressure is mounting due to severely stretched
budgets and increasing demand on services, and yet we are seeing more innovation in the sector, and
the NHS is taking measures to support primary care, as evidenced in the Five Year Forward View
(FYFV) and specified in the GP Forward View.
It has long been recognised that many GP premises have not seen substantial or sufficient investment
of late. Through the FYFV, NHS England sought to advocate investment by, for example, paying for
indemnity costs before 2020 up to 100% reimbursement of premises and premises development as
well as initiatives such as the Estates and Technology Transformation Programme .
Practices are eligible for different rent reimbursements, depending on whether the practice is owned
by partners or other source. The BMA website breaks theses down into three main categories:
leasehold cost reimbursements , if the practice is a tenant of an NHS property, cost rent or borrowing
cost reimbursement (BCR), where there s a mortgage, or notional rent , if the GPs

Ancient Mayan Script Of The Maya
Ancient Mayan Script The Maya hieroglyphic writing is perhaps one of the most complex writing
systems in the world. This writing system contains over hundreds of rare signs or glyphs in the form
of humans, animals, and objects. Many of these signs contained either logograms or syllabograms to
write words, sentences, and phrases. Logograms were to used express the meaning and syllabograms
to denote sound values. The Mayan s were able to write anything that they can say. They were able to
turn whatever they spoke into a writing form because of their one of a kind writing system. The Maya
were actually not a group of single people but many nations with several but linked cultures, religions,
and languages. Of the many Maya languages, only two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He found a specific category of hieroglyph that he called Emblem Glyphs he noticed that this glyph
had a standard position and form in Maya texts: they occurred towards the end of passages (Culbert
19). Another important object found was the Maya Glyph Block (AMNH), which contained Mayan
Glyphs on a block. We found that the order to read Maya glyphs is not as easy as it would seem.
Glyph blocks were arranged in a grid and they are read in paired columns. The first block is on the top
left and the second is to the right of the first. (AS Web) Next thing that major in the Maya writing
system was the numbers. Numbers and Calendar were the first part of the Mayan writing system to be
deciphered by scholars during the 19th century. Comparable to our writing system and the
Babylonians, the Maya used the idea of place value. Except we have a place value that increases from
right to left in multiples of 10, the Maya system has a place value that increases in multiples of 20.
Instead of the place value increasing horizontally from right to left, the Maya increased vertically
moving up the page. For example, three is represented and three dots and five are represented as a bar.
The Maya scribes loved decoration and complexity for its own sake as a result each number from 1 to

The Role Of Corruption In Julius Caesar
At the end of the play, Julius Caesar, Antony refers to Brutus as the noblest of all. He really is what
Antony calls him ironically: an honorable man. Because honorable and honest people tend to suppose
that others also live by their standards, he trusts Cassius and lets himself be convinced that Caesar
must die to preserve democratic rule in Rome. To him, the killing of his friend is a sad but necessary
sacrifice, and his well intentioned mistake destroys him. At the end, Antony says of him, This was the
noblest Roman of them all. I don t disagree that he was noble. I do, however think that Procia may
have been the noblest of them all. Porcia was the daughter of Cato ad the wife of Marcus Junius
Brutus. She was considered to be kind

Keynesian Theory And Aggregate Demand
THE KEYNESIAN THEORY AND AGGREGATE DEMAND
By Riley Lennon
The great depression in the 1930 s devastated the economic market, but also produced two of the
greatest economists to ever live, John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich August Hayek. Why did the
economist John Maynard Keynes advocate for the government to have an active role with influencing
the level of economic activity. This is because Keynes believes that this will stimulate the economic
activity and bring the country out of economic drought. Keynes theory leads to the government
influencing the level of aggregate demand, and how it effects inflation and output. Although Keynes
was known as the greatest economist of this era, there was another economist by the name of Friedrich
Hayek, whose beliefs were completely opposite to those of Keynes. Hayek wanted no government
intervention and for the markets to control themselves.
The Keynesian theory was developed by John Maynard Keynes in attempt to understand the great
depression. Keynes Wanted lower taxes and higher government spending witch both of these methods
would stimulate economic activity and demand in the economic cycle in an attempt to heave the
global economy out of financial depression. This economic theory was only created after the
economic boom in the 1920 s. During the 1920 s every economist thought that it was going to
continue forever, this boom was caused by several factors such as lower tax rates which would
encourage people to

Football Hooliganism
Football Hooliganism Overview The destructive and unruly behavior of extraordinarily zealous
football fans is referred to as football hooliganism. The participants of football hooliganism who
support their respective football clubs demonstrate all kinds of violent behaviors including scuffling,
sabotage and intimidation (Another sorry outbreak of the England disease, 2004). This behavior is
most often based on the rivalry that exists between different football clubs or teams and can give rise
to great conflicts once the matches have ended and sometimes even before that. Sometimes when
these conflicts arise during the match at the stadium, the people who practice hooliganism are arrested
by the police, meanwhile most of the times the supporters of the rival teams choose to confront each
other at places that are far away from the stadiums so as to get away from the police arrests. Some
immensely violent acts of hooliganism have been seen by the witnesses by these supporters of
football. The conflicts that exist between these people can be as small as fistfights and sometimes so
intense that these people make use of the deadly weapons against each other. The use of glass bottles,
sports bats, pistols, knives, rocks and machetes has also been seen in football hooliganism. There have
been cases in the past when hooliganism and conflicts inside the stadium during an ongoing football
match resulted in panic and injuries were inflicted on the fans that were there. When these

Bipolar Disorder (BP)
Bipolar disorder (BP) is a mood disorder that is considered to affect the emotional regulation of
individuals who have it (Blaney, Krueger, Millon, 2015, p.234). Bipolar disorder is also believed to
compromise the executive functioning, attention, planning, and regulation for the individuals who
have it (Blaney, Krueger, and Millon, 2015, pp.234 235). As a consequence, BP may cause serious
adverse consequences to the individuals who have it. According to Singh and Muhammad (2006),
bipolar disorder is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed when patients are initially seen when seeking
treatment for mood symptoms. Furthermore, unrecognized or misdiagnosis of BP may lead to
ineffective treatment and increased risk of mood episodes (Consequences ... Show more content on

Cerimele, Chwastiak, Chan, Harrison, Unützer (2013), state Historical examination and other factors
can be helpful in differentiating bipolar disorder from other mood disorders (p.1649). According to

Acikel, Son, Tutuncu (2015), suggest that BP is up to 70% heritable (p.13). This heritability infers that
if one family member has BP, the possibility of another family member having it increases. Therefore,
a thorough personal examination, in conjunction with a familial history assessment, may increase the
probability of receiving an earlier diagnosis of BP, and conceivably increase the likelihood of earlier
interventions, management, and treatment plans for

Judicial Tyranny The New Kings Of America
The book Judicial Tyranny The New Kings of America? is a compilation of articles and speeches. It is
compiled by Mark Sutherland and includes writings from famed Christian personality James C.
Dobson Chief Justice Roy Moore, Ambassador Alan Keyes, U.s Attorney General Ed Meese, among
others. The book is a call to political action. It is aimed at Christian readers and the writers all argue
that Christian politics equals constitutional purism. It is specifically meant to invoke constitutional
responses and activism. Each chapter, twenty in all, are a few pages long and systematically decry the
current judicial system and explain the lack of constitutional basis for their current level of power.
The book s primary source of inspiration seems to be the lawsuit involving Alabama Chief Justice Roy
Moore. The case was highly publicized and Moore s refusal to carry out the ultimate ruling led to his
removal from office. Chief Justice Moore was removed from office in which a majority of citizens of
Alabama elected him to serve for acknowledging God with the placement of a monument that contains
the Ten Commandments and for refusing to remove that monument. The majority of the writers in
Judicial Tyranny reference his case extensively and an excerpt from Roy Moore s book ( So Help Me
God, 2005) appears as Chapter seven in Judicial Tyranny. The remainder of the book does do an
admittedly excellent job of weaving historical quotes and happenings into all of the writings so that

The Road In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
The name of this book written by Cormac McCarthy, the Road, can always drive the readers into a
misunderstanding that it is a Road style work. However, it is actually a apocalyptic story which
includes bunch of description and discussion about belief, morality and the human nature. It actually
presents how people will act under a extreme terrible situation when the civilization totally does not
exist. Actually McCarthy is not the only one who uses a lawless environment to analysis the humanity.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding is also a story which puts the characters in a raw environment
and presents their action. These two works have the similarities in the way they set up the stories, the
type of conflicts and the way they end the stories; and this similarities actually show how the things
described in the stories are commonly deemed, and help the two stories to support each other s ideas.
Differ from the Road, Lord of the Flies is actually a war based story. However, even though the
missions of the writing might be different, both the authors make similar settings for the story. In the
Road, the characters are in the environment where the resources and the rules no longer exist. In Lord
of the Flies, the characters are in an island where is also out of anything civilized. It might be doubtful
that how McCathy is sure his description under that situation can be confirmed as logical and real, but
what is described in Lord of the Flies can confirm it. More

Analysis Of Still Alice And The Notebook
Socioeconomic status is a defining factor in nearly every society around the world. Therefore, it is
unsurprising that the issues of class and stratification are manifest in many types of media, including
films. Like many nations, the United States operates under the class system. The sociologist Dalton
Conley defined the class system as, an economically based hierarchical system characterized by
cohesive, oppositional groups and somewhat loose social mobility (Conley 249). Still Alice and The
Notebook depict social stratification and the struggles between different socioeconomic classes. Still
Alice follows the life of Alice Howland, a linguistics professor at Columbia University, as she is
diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s and fights to retain her memories and relationships. The film
is set in modern day America, in which there is a stigma associated with dementia, there is a large
degree of gender inequality, and some careers are viewed as prestigious (e.g. doctors and lawyers)
while others are condemned by society (e.g. starving artists). The Notebook shares the story of Noah
Calhoun as he tries to revive the memories of his wife Allie, who suffers from dementia, by reading
her the story of their undying love. While Noah reads to Allie, the movie displays their life in the
1940s. During this time, America was facing World War II, segregation, and a highly stratified society
(U.S. Timeline, 1940 1949). When the movie shows elderly Noah and Allie, it takes place in

The Pros And Cons Of The USA Patriot Act
Despite being the superpower of the world, the United States of America does not enjoy any exception
from the global threats and challenges. The people in denial of such global threats finally woke up to
the reality on the dawn of September 11th, 2001, when terrorists struck American financial hub in the
city of New York. A badly shaken nation shocked by the magnitude of brutality quickly assembled
behind its president to pass a legislation, known as the USA Patriot Act, to tackle internal and external
threats to this nation on a war footing basis. The haste with which this legislation was passed made it
controversial almost immediately. No doubt, the intent was valid and there was an absolute need to
tackle threats to the homeland, however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many times in the past decade and a half since the Act was passed, there have been numerous reports
of suppression of the rights protected by the First, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth amendments of the Bill of
Rights, directly threatening the freedom of association, information, speech, and the right to legal
representation as well as the right to liberty. This is simply unacceptable what is the point of having a
law of the land if we create and ratify legislation that destroys that supreme law? For instance, in clear
violation of the Fourth amendment, the library surveillance introduced by the Patriot Act allowed
monitoring of library s public computer terminals and use of secret search warrants to seize any
tangible thing in a library without probable cause and court procedure. It also imposed a gag order on
booksellers and librarians to prevent them from disclosing details of surveillance.()CITE The extent of
surveillance in libraries is just another reason Americans need to realize that their privacy rights have
been snatched from them under the disguise of the Patriot Act. It is important to realize that the
surveillance does not stop at the district or township libraries. It has reached our residential doorsteps
without us realizing it. In this era of digital communication, most people rely on technology to stay
connected with the rest of the world. The Patriot Act allows federal agents to monitor electronic
communications, which includes wireless phones, email, and internet, without much oversight. It also
allowed the government to seize business records of telecom companies as well as customer records
from the Internet Service Providers.

The region of the Middle East and its inhabitants have always been a wonder to the Europeans, dating
back to the years before the advent of Islam and the years following the Arab conquest. Today, the
Islamic world spreads from the corners of the Philippines to the far edges of Spain and Central Africa.
Various cultures have adopted the Islamic faith, and this blending of many different cultures has
strengthened the universal Islamic culture. The religion of Islam has provided a new meaning to the
lives of many people around the world. In the Islamic world, the religion defines and enriches culture

Thus, the extended family becomes unified functional unit which contributes to the much larger
community. The tribal villages settled in Iraq still rely on these traditional concepts for a living. The
family structure in Syria is quite different from that in the tribal villages in Iraq. There are two major
reasons for this difference. First of all, most of the settled tribes belong to the Shiite sect of Islam. The
Shiite believe themselves to be pure Muslims and therefore are very conservative towards religious
obligations. Secondly, if we look back at the Arab conquest, The Arab army itself never introduced a
new culture in the region, it was actually the fusion of the religion (Islam) and the local cultures of the
conquered people which in the time developed into a universal Islamic culture. So, it is understandable
that now all the Muslim countries will have the exact same way of life, yet their fundamental family
beliefs will , no doubt, stem from the sources of the Islamic law. The conservative outlook of the
Shiite is somewhat misleading, for it may seem that family life is very monotonous, but on the
contrary it is rather very complex. Women in this society are rarely seen in the public, but it does not
mean they don t have a public life. For them, the private life, in the sanctuary of their houses, is their
public life. It is there that a woman can do anything she pleases. If she does decide to come out into

be easy for you. But they will be hard for us (Cather 90). Antonia knows the racial difference between
her and Jim. She has to work harder than the native speakers to be able to achieve what might come
easily to them. Later on in the novel, Antonia goes off with a guy named Larry Donovan he informs
her that his job has moved. This ended up being a lie. He leaves her whilst she s pregnant, so she
becomes a single mom. Jim expresses his thoughts, I was bitterly disappointed in her [Ántonia]. I
could not forgive her for becoming an object of pity (Cather 192). Jim expresses his dismay that
Antonia has basically ruined her life by putting faith into a man of words. Antonia s reputation fell
drastically after this and it appears as though it would be hard to pick up. However, when Jim returns,
he ends up being wrong. In the literary criticism, Anthony M. Dykema VanderArk states, She appears
at the end of My Antonia as a figure who has tri
umphed over the hardships of her life through stal

struggle...ensuring an easier future for her children (Dykema VanderArk 211). Antonia has gone
through a lot throughout her life. Her father s death to ruining her reputation by being oblivious. Her
race caused her to be inferior compared to the women that don t have to work in order to survive, but
she still gives a good life to her children. Despite her hardships, she still kept to her strong attitude and

A Night of Neo-Psychedelia and Paisley Underground
On Saturday May 17th The Vault at Vinyl Revival hosted a night of Neo psychedelia and Paisley
Underground mixed with a little Dream Magic Psych. Additionally we had two guest D J s , Eric Slick
from Dr. Dog and Dominic Angelella form DRGN KING. They played songs LP s and 45 s in
between sets and I had the opportunity to speak with Eric about Dr. Dog and the music business. He is
the drummer and arranged the horns on the new album, B Room. The album is a group project and is
the driving force in the wide range of musical styles on this fine album. It is disappointing to hear that
sales are light, even though, by many standards it is a very good effort. Folks take our music we make
our living touring. Intellectually, I know this, but folks would not steal tips, a painting, or money, yet
feel comfortable taking an artist s work. Thanks for coming and adding a little more color to a very
musically colorful night. Weekender came out first and set the mood with their dreamy Paisley
Underground cuts from their album, Spanish Peaks. Nick and Eric Sheehan write the music and play
drums and guitar. Tom Anthony and Emily Cahiel added depth with vocals and guitars. Emily s
harmony gave the vocals that far off Blue Oyster Cult feel. I heard a lot of my favorites in their music,
The Moody Blues. The Strawbs, Jefferson Airplane and Blue Oyster Cult. This was most evident in
the first song LSD and the Age of Interest and the last song Spanish Peaks which is also

Gay Marriage Vs Same Sex Marriage
Since before the public ratified the Constitution and adopting the Bill of Rights and even prior to
Marbury v. Madison establishing the doctrine of judicial review, the clergy solemnization power
existed as an embedded feature of this nation s marriage traditions. The power both allows
Solemnization laws grant officials near unbridled discretion within the statutory limitations in
deciding who they will perform marriage ceremony, and to ministers who perform religious marriages
to marry couples legally under the civil law. Also, the Fourteenth Amendment recognizes same sex
marriage in all 50 States; It described marriage as a purely secular institution, which serves
governmental interests. In the light of, Justice Kennedy highlighted that religious organizations can
advocate base on the belief that same sex marriage should not be condoned (Horwitz, P. 2014).
Justice Kennedy stated that many who deem same sex marriage to be wrong reach that conclusion
based on decent and honorable religious or philosophical premises, and neither they nor their beliefs
are disparaged here. But when that sincere, personal opposition becomes enacted law and public
policy, the necessary consequence is to put the imprimatur of the State itself on an exclusion that soon
demeans or stigmatizes those whose own liberty is then denied. Under the Constitution, same sex
couples seek in marriage the same legal treatment as opposite sex couples, and it would disparage
their choices and diminish their

The Character Analysis Of Iago In Othello
The first symptom that Iago exhibits is deceitfulness. Iago spends the entirety of his time during the
course of the play manipulation others and indulging in deceitful behaviors. Iago s actions are
constantly manipulative, self serving, and often proving harmful to others. The DSM 5 describes this
trait as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or gain .
Throughout the plays run Iago puts forth a facade, making himself seem trustworthy in order to get
closer to characters like Roderigo, Cassio, and Othello, whom he uses to inflict pain on others, or
themselves. One scene in particular comes when Iago and Cassio are the party that is happening that
evening. Iago attempts to get Cassio to drink, but Cassio is opposed. Iago tells him, I have a stoup of
wine Cassio replies with Not tonight good Iago Iago counters with, O they are our friends! But one
cup; I ll drink for you (2.3. ). However, this is not an isolated incident, Iago is shown being
manipulative and deceitful the entire play. Cassio was just a pawn in Iago s plan, for Iago no one has
enough value to not be used. Iago displays habits similar to another sociopath, the infamous Ted
Bundy. According to the website Weebly, Bundy frequently manipulated his victims, using his good
looks and charm as lures to trap his victims . Iago s actions are very similar to known sociopath Ted
Bundy. Iago incidentally makes a comment very similar to what Weebly describes

HIV In Haiti
Haiti is one of the regions with the highest HIV infection rate, especially in Caribbean. About 3% of
adults are infected. The reason for that are poverty, sexual partners, gender, and almost non existing
health care.
The epidemic started in late 70s due to prostitution, blood transfusion and unprotected sex. Around the
same time the epidemic was discovered in the USA, and the virus was found in Haitians immigrants.
Because of that Haiti become one of the risk factors for HIV. The stigma brought disastrous
consequences to the whole country, including the collapse of tourism.
At the beginning, the disease was associated with male homosexual behavior, but the virus spread
quickly to the heterosexual population. Now women are more likely to get infected than man because
of their lower position in society. Rape, unprotected sex and prostitution increase their chances of HIV.
Most of the pregnant women with HIV gave it to their children. Now a lot of efforts are taken to
prevent it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Haitian Red Cross and other organizations work hard to help and educate people about AIDS/HIV,
safe sexual practice and give access to condoms. All the efforts bring optimistic results. Over the past
decade, new HIV infection rate decreased by 54%.
Huge progress can be noted especially in urban area. Unfortunately rural areas still required a lot of
help, mostly basic education about AIDS/HIV prevention.
There is a significant drop in percentage of people with HIV in Haiti, but there s still a lot of work
ahead to change the overall situation. Especially because the country has to struggle with other
epidemics and natural disasters like the earthquake in 2010, which only slows down the process of

The Effects Of Drug Abuse On Our Life
This essay will be written to raise awareness into the idea of drug abuse and what causes it as this is a
growing issue within adolescents in our world today. This essay will help to inform people into the
negative impact drugs can have on your life and to also outline how an individual can refrain from
such acts. It is worthy of investigation due to the fact that it will enable one to gain a greater
understanding through science and research about how an individual within the aforementioned age
group can be influenced by differing factors, which ultimately lead to consumption of drugs. The
essay aims to ensure individuals refrain from conforming to the underlying contention of drugs as a
negative substance.

Teenagers and young adults choose to take drugs for many different reasons and these include: To fit
in, to escape from pressures, to relieve boredom, to seem grown up, to rebel, to experiment (drug free
world 2006)
Many teenagers feel as though consuming drugs acts as a solution to their problems. However, the
drugs usually become a major problem affecting their life as the years pass on. Drugs soon become an
addiction and lead people s life astray. The addiction itself can be considered a brain disease because
drugs change the function and structure of the brain (NIH, 2014). The brain is made up of a variety of
parts that all interconnect to take out a specific job. When drugs are consumed they cause the brain to
stop functioning in the way that it usually does. Drugs can affect three primary areas of the brain and
these include: The brain stem, the cerebral cortex and the limbic system. (Brain and addiction, 2014)
For most people the initial decision to consume or inject any type of drug is voluntary. However, over
time, drug use can cause changes to the brain and this can take away peoples self control and therefore
limit their ability to make sound decisions in certain circumstances. There are many biological and
socio cultural factors that do indeed play a role in drug use, and this essay will attempt to explain these
factors with reference to relevant research studies.

NAEYC Guidelines For Affective Development
Affective development can be defined as the emergence of the emotional capacity to experience,
recognize, and express a range of emotions to adequately response to emotional cues of others. Adults
play a very important role in the affective development in children. Now more than ever, children are
being raised in a very unpredictable world. Adults are now taking on a much greater challenge when
working with young children to help set the foundation for affective development. When it comes to
the educational side of affective development, teachers are given NAEYC guidelines to help in their
decision making. These guidelines are designed to promote competent young children. It is very
important when teaching or caring for children that we offer them a caring community to learn
(Charlesworth, 2014). The foundation of the community is consistent, positive, caring relationships
between adults and children, among children, among teachers and between teachers and families
(Charlesworth, 2014). What this ultimately means as a teacher, is that you need to provide to these
children a safe and secure place to learn. It is also very important to keep in mind that teaching is
about enhancing development, and ensuring that students know that you genuinely respect, and want
what s best for them. When teachers get to know their students, they can plan more individually based
on their specific needs. They are able to better prepare themselves to provide the students with the

Leningrad Cemetery Winter Of 1941 Summary
In Leningrad Cemetery, Winter of 1941 by Sharon Olds, similes and metaphors are used throughout
the poem. These poetic devices are used to convey the message that the people who die in her town
are not treated with the respect they should be. They also provide insight into the severity of the author
s situation and allow the meaning of the work to come to fruition. Without similes the author would
not be able to invoke the feelings of sadness and desperation the work gives the reader. They give
insight into the author s internal thoughts and how she perceives her situation. Similes and metaphors
provide a clear picture of the despondent world that the author lived in. In the poem the dead are

In the first simile, the author gives an air of hope describing the bodies as stiff [cocoons] that will split
down the center / when the new life inside is prepared (10 11). Although they are dead, Olds alludes to
the idea that they may be reborn again comparing them to a caterpillar and their death being a new
beginning instead of an end. Oppositely, she says that most of the deceased lay like corpses... / with no
sign of peace wanting to come back (12 16). This take on death is the exact opposite of the former, it
is filled with dread and hopelessness. Both these similes act as an extended metaphor for the attitude
of the author. She is conflicted between the escape of death and the life that she has built for herself.
She ends the poem with the lines even to the bread made of glue and sawdust, / even to the icy winter
and the siege. (17 18). In addition, the fact she says most of the corpses look as if they want to return,
Olds loves her existence, even though the suffering she endures everyday is excruciating, it s better
than the nothingness that is death. Also, the author says that the bodies lay like corpses, this comes
across as odd because one would expect bodies to do so, making this statement seem obvious.
However, before she uses this simile, she uses the two others about trees and cocoons which make
death seem more cerebral than it actually is. But towards the end of

  • 3. My Moral Philosophy From An Organization Perspective As I attempt to summarize my moral philosophy from an organizational perspective, I believe it will benefit both the reader and I to establish a basis from which to begin. I have a strong belief in the ideas of environmentalism, to a certain degree. Our environment plays a significant role in our development and lends itself to the shaping of our actions. I find there to be an enormous truth to the words of pioneer psychologist John B. Watson. Give me a dozen healthy infants, well formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in and I ll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select: doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant, chief, and yes, even begger man and thief, regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors. (Watson, 1924, p. 104) To add context to his concept, he followed this up by stating I am going beyond my facts, and I admit it, but so have the advocates of the contrary ant they have been doing it for many thousands of years (p. 104). In addition to the works of Watson, I also developed my moral philosophy from my involvement with sports from middle school up through a short stint in the Global Basketball Association. Each level contained its own set of challenges and life lessons that further developed how I function as a leader within my organization. • 4. Do Humans Cause Wildfires Humans cause Ninety percent of wildfires in the U.S., while the remaining ten percent, normally caused by lightning, lava, etc. Wildfires are uncontrolled fires often occurring in wildland areas; however, they can spread and consume houses and agricultural resources. Forest sometimes needs wildfires to get rid of old trees and plants to let new ones grow. During a wildfire, if people told to leave, they do so. Wildfires often begin unnoticed, so taking minor precautions is helpful. The common cause of wildfires begin with lightning, human carelessness, volcano eruptions, arson, and pyroclastic clouds from active volcanoes. Droughts, heat waves, and climate change can also have a dramatic effect on the danger of wildfires. Although wildfires ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Design, Instrumentation And Analytical Tools Essay The previous chapter focused on the identification and discussion of the theoretical framework, related theories and the theoretical assertions of previous studies. This chapter identifies the methods, design, instrumentation and analytical tools. The content of the chapter aims at the identification of appropriate and suitable methods and the adoption of such within the confines of a systematic design which clearly stipulates population and sampling procedures; data collection instruments with regards to variable measurement and operational definitions, instrument reliability and validity as well as descriptive and inferential statistical tools (Sekaran, 2003; Sarantakos, 2005). 3.2 Research Design The research design is primarily concerned with the structure and framework of plans within which empirical activities concerned with research are to be undertaken. It encapsulates concepts such as population and sample of the study, methodology and characteristic of the study as well as instrument for generation of data and defines the layout for the entire field work (Sullivan, 2001; Sarantakos, 2005). Similarly, Baridam (2008) describe research design as the basic question of how the focus of the research will be brought into and how they will be employed within the research setting to obtain the required information. It is a framework for collecting valid and reliable data to test the hypotheses and answer the research questions. There are two main types of research ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Abuse Of Power In 1984 And Metropolis To completely understand a text, you must recognise the circumstances that formed the setting for the event, statement or idea. Context therefore, plays an important role in the opportunities that arise from exploring the extent of the use and abuse of power in relation to our natural primitive nature. George Orwell s Nineteen eighty four (1984) published in 1949 and Fritz Lang s Metropolis published in January, 1927 (remade in 2010) are two texts that evaluate the mechanisms of power in societies that practice socio political supremacy and tyranny. Orwell and Lang use comprehensive language forms and features to produce a complex and uncertain fate of humanity. Their ideas, values and attitudes were influenced by the social, cultural and historical contexts of society at the time. 1984 is a fictional text of a dystopian society that illustrates Orwell s prediction of a future of oppression and control. It is an attack on totalitarian government where the state controls all aspects of life and impacts how people perceive, comprehend, and converse about modern social movements. Power is inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. The Value Homeowners Place On Neighborhood Local Public Goods The goal of my research is investigate differences in the value homeowners place on neighborhood local public goods. I define local public goods as either non excludable or non rivalrous neighborhood amenities such as open space, school quality, and public transportation, and disamenities such as crime. Previous research has focused on estimating the average value or willingness to pay for these types of goods. However, just as most preferences can vary by income level, so can the preferences for local public goods. From a public policy persepctive it is important to understand this heterogeneity so that local governments can better serve their residents. For example, if low income households value public transportation more than the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assuming higher income households purchase more expensive homes, we can anaylze how preferences for different public goods vary by income. I have acquired data on neighborhood amenities and disamenities from several sources. This fellowship would allow me to purchase even more detailed data on open space, nearby public infrastructure and amenities, and crime rates. It would also allow me to focus more of my time in geocoding houses, open space, roadways, crime, and census data to get more precise measures of local public goods and account for any spatial correlation between houses. For several decades researchers have used hedonic theory to estimate the effect of various local public goods on house prices. These studies have examined the value households place on a countless number of neighborhood amenities and disamenities, including open space, school quality, crime, air quality, and nearby public infrastructure. Understanding households willingness to pay is paramount for local governments, city planners, and policymakers in determining the optimal provision of various public goods and services. A quick survey of the hedonic literature finds that the effects of certain public goods on housing prices often vary in their significance, magnitude and direction. It s one of the easiest ways to generate extra income, yet NHS reimbursement is largely an untapped resource. Marie Cahalane takes a look at notional rent and how you can ensure you re getting what your practice is entitled to It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... The opening words of Charles Dickens a Tale of Two Cities now ring true for GPs and their practices; pressure is mounting due to severely stretched budgets and increasing demand on services, and yet we are seeing more innovation in the sector, and the NHS is taking measures to support primary care, as evidenced in the Five Year Forward View (FYFV) and specified in the GP Forward View. It has long been recognised that many GP premises have not seen substantial or sufficient investment of late. Through the FYFV, NHS England sought to advocate investment by, for example, paying for indemnity costs before 2020 up to 100% reimbursement of premises and premises development as well as initiatives such as the Estates and Technology Transformation Programme . Practices are eligible for different rent reimbursements, depending on whether the practice is owned by partners or other source. The BMA website breaks theses down into three main categories: leasehold cost reimbursements , if the practice is a tenant of an NHS property, cost rent or borrowing cost reimbursement (BCR), where there s a mortgage, or notional rent , if the GPs ... • 9. Ancient Mayan Script Of The Maya Ancient Mayan Script The Maya hieroglyphic writing is perhaps one of the most complex writing systems in the world. This writing system contains over hundreds of rare signs or glyphs in the form of humans, animals, and objects. Many of these signs contained either logograms or syllabograms to write words, sentences, and phrases. Logograms were to used express the meaning and syllabograms to denote sound values. The Mayan s were able to write anything that they can say. They were able to turn whatever they spoke into a writing form because of their one of a kind writing system. He found a specific category of hieroglyph that he called Emblem Glyphs he noticed that this glyph had a standard position and form in Maya texts: they occurred towards the end of passages (Culbert 19). Another important object found was the Maya Glyph Block (AMNH), which contained Mayan Glyphs on a block. We found that the order to read Maya glyphs is not as easy as it would seem. Glyph blocks were arranged in a grid and they are read in paired columns. The first block is on the top left and the second is to the right of the first. (AS Web) Next thing that major in the Maya writing system was the numbers. Numbers and Calendar were the first part of the Mayan writing system to be deciphered by scholars during the 19th century. Comparable to our writing system and the Babylonians, the Maya used the idea of place value. Except we have a place value that increases from right to left in multiples of 10, the Maya system has a place value that increases in multiples of 20. Instead of the place value increasing horizontally from right to left, the Maya increased vertically moving up the page. For example, three is represented and three dots and five are represented as a bar. The Maya scribes loved decoration and complexity for its own sake as a result each number from 1 to 20 ... • 12. Keynesian Theory And Aggregate Demand THE KEYNESIAN THEORY AND AGGREGATE DEMAND By Riley Lennon The great depression in the 1930 s devastated the economic market, but also produced two of the greatest economists to ever live, John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich August Hayek. Why did the economist John Maynard Keynes advocate for the government to have an active role with influencing the level of economic activity. This is because Keynes believes that this will stimulate the economic activity and bring the country out of economic drought. Keynes theory leads to the government influencing the level of aggregate demand, and how it effects inflation and output. Although Keynes was known as the greatest economist of this era, there was another economist by the name of Friedrich Hayek, whose beliefs were completely opposite to those of Keynes. Hayek wanted no government intervention and for the markets to control themselves. The Keynesian theory was developed by John Maynard Keynes in attempt to understand the great depression. Keynes Wanted lower taxes and higher government spending witch both of these methods would stimulate economic activity and demand in the economic cycle in an attempt to heave the global economy out of financial depression. This economic theory was only created after the economic boom in the 1920 s. During the 1920 s every economist thought that it was going to continue forever, this boom was caused by several factors such as lower tax rates which would encourage people to ... • 13. Football Hooliganism Football Hooliganism Overview The destructive and unruly behavior of extraordinarily zealous football fans is referred to as football hooliganism. The participants of football hooliganism who support their respective football clubs demonstrate all kinds of violent behaviors including scuffling, sabotage and intimidation (Another sorry outbreak of the England disease, 2004). This behavior is most often based on the rivalry that exists between different football clubs or teams and can give rise to great conflicts once the matches have ended and sometimes even before that. Sometimes when these conflicts arise during the match at the stadium, the people who practice hooliganism are arrested by the police, meanwhile most of the times the supporters of the rival teams choose to confront each other at places that are far away from the stadiums so as to get away from the police arrests. Some immensely violent acts of hooliganism have been seen by the witnesses by these supporters of football. The conflicts that exist between these people can be as small as fistfights and sometimes so intense that these people make use of the deadly weapons against each other. The use of glass bottles, sports bats, pistols, knives, rocks and machetes has also been seen in football hooliganism. There have been cases in the past when hooliganism and conflicts inside the stadium during an ongoing football match resulted in panic and injuries were inflicted on the fans that were there. • 14. Bipolar Disorder (BP) Bipolar disorder (BP) is a mood disorder that is considered to affect the emotional regulation of individuals who have it (Blaney, Krueger, Millon, 2015, p.234). Bipolar disorder is also believed to compromise the executive functioning, attention, planning, and regulation for the individuals who have it (Blaney, Krueger, and Millon, 2015, pp.234 235). As a consequence, BP may cause serious adverse consequences to the individuals who have it. According to Singh and Muhammad (2006), bipolar disorder is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed when patients are initially seen when seeking treatment for mood symptoms. Furthermore, unrecognized or misdiagnosis of BP may lead to ineffective treatment and increased risk of mood episodes (Consequences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cerimele, Chwastiak, Chan, Harrison, Unützer (2013), state Historical examination and other factors can be helpful in differentiating bipolar disorder from other mood disorders (p.1649). (2013), a personal history of hypersomnia episodes, psychotic features, mood lability, and subsyndromal mania, among other factors occurred more often in patients with BP (p. 1649). In addition, Acikel, Son, Tutuncu (2015), have another reason for conducting a historical examination. Acikel, Son, Tutuncu (2015), suggest that BP is up to 70% heritable (p.13). This heritability infers that if one family member has BP, the possibility of another family member having it increases. Therefore, a thorough personal examination, in conjunction with a familial history assessment, may increase the probability of receiving an earlier diagnosis of BP, and conceivably increase the likelihood of earlier interventions, management, and treatment plans for ... • 15. Judicial Tyranny The New Kings Of America The book Judicial Tyranny The New Kings of America? is a compilation of articles and speeches. It is compiled by Mark Sutherland and includes writings from famed Christian personality James C. Dobson Chief Justice Roy Moore, Ambassador Alan Keyes, U.s Attorney General Ed Meese, among others. The book is a call to political action. It is aimed at Christian readers and the writers all argue that Christian politics equals constitutional purism. It is specifically meant to invoke constitutional responses and activism. Each chapter, twenty in all, are a few pages long and systematically decry the current judicial system and explain the lack of constitutional basis for their current level of power. The book s primary source of inspiration seems to be the lawsuit involving Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore. The case was highly publicized and Moore s refusal to carry out the ultimate ruling led to his removal from office. Chief Justice Moore was removed from office in which a majority of citizens of Alabama elected him to serve for acknowledging God with the placement of a monument that contains the Ten Commandments and for refusing to remove that monument. The majority of the writers in Judicial Tyranny reference his case extensively and an excerpt from Roy Moore s book ( So Help Me God, 2005) appears as Chapter seven in Judicial Tyranny. The remainder of the book does do an admittedly excellent job of weaving historical quotes and happenings into all of the writings so that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. The Road In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding The name of this book written by Cormac McCarthy, the Road, can always drive the readers into a misunderstanding that it is a Road style work. However, it is actually a apocalyptic story which includes bunch of description and discussion about belief, morality and the human nature. It actually presents how people will act under a extreme terrible situation when the civilization totally does not exist. Actually McCarthy is not the only one who uses a lawless environment to analysis the humanity. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is also a story which puts the characters in a raw environment and presents their action. These two works have the similarities in the way they set up the stories, the type of conflicts and the way they end the stories; and this similarities actually show how the things described in the stories are commonly deemed, and help the two stories to support each other s ideas. Differ from the Road, Lord of the Flies is actually a war based story. However, even though the missions of the writing might be different, both the authors make similar settings for the story. In the Road, the characters are in the environment where the resources and the rules no longer exist. In Lord of the Flies, the characters are in an island where is also out of anything civilized. It might be doubtful that how McCathy is sure his description under that situation can be confirmed as logical and real, but what is described in Lord of the Flies can confirm it. More ... • 17. Analysis Of Still Alice And The Notebook Socioeconomic status is a defining factor in nearly every society around the world. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the issues of class and stratification are manifest in many types of media, including films. Like many nations, the United States operates under the class system. The sociologist Dalton Conley defined the class system as, an economically based hierarchical system characterized by cohesive, oppositional groups and somewhat loose social mobility (Conley 249). Still Alice and The Notebook depict social stratification and the struggles between different socioeconomic classes. Still Alice follows the life of Alice Howland, a linguistics professor at Columbia University, as she is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s and fights to retain her memories and relationships. The film is set in modern day America, in which there is a stigma associated with dementia, there is a large degree of gender inequality, and some careers are viewed as prestigious (e.g. doctors and lawyers) while others are condemned by society (e.g. starving artists). The Notebook shares the story of Noah Calhoun as he tries to revive the memories of his wife Allie, who suffers from dementia, by reading her the story of their undying love. While Noah reads to Allie, the movie displays their life in the 1940s. During this time, America was facing World War II, segregation, and a highly stratified society (U.S. Timeline, 1940 1949). • 18. The Pros And Cons Of The USA Patriot Act Despite being the superpower of the world, the United States of America does not enjoy any exception from the global threats and challenges. The people in denial of such global threats finally woke up to the reality on the dawn of September 11th, 2001, when terrorists struck American financial hub in the city of New York. A badly shaken nation shocked by the magnitude of brutality quickly assembled behind its president to pass a legislation, known as the USA Patriot Act, to tackle internal and external threats to this nation on a war footing basis. The haste with which this legislation was passed made it controversial almost immediately. Many times in the past decade and a half since the Act was passed, there have been numerous reports of suppression of the rights protected by the First, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth amendments of the Bill of Rights, directly threatening the freedom of association, information, speech, and the right to legal representation as well as the right to liberty. This is simply unacceptable what is the point of having a law of the land if we create and ratify legislation that destroys that supreme law? For instance, in clear violation of the Fourth amendment, the library surveillance introduced by the Patriot Act allowed monitoring of library s public computer terminals and use of secret search warrants to seize any tangible thing in a library without probable cause and court procedure. It also imposed a gag order on booksellers and librarians to prevent them from disclosing details of surveillance.()CITE The extent of surveillance in libraries is just another reason Americans need to realize that their privacy rights have been snatched from them under the disguise of the Patriot Act. It is important to realize that the surveillance does not stop at the district or township libraries. It has reached our residential doorsteps without us realizing it. In this era of digital communication, most people rely on technology to stay connected with the rest of the world. The Patriot Act allows federal agents to monitor electronic communications, which includes wireless phones, email, and internet, without much oversight. Various cultures have adopted the Islamic faith, and this blending of many different cultures has strengthened the universal Islamic culture. The tribal villages settled in Iraq still rely on these traditional concepts for a living. The family structure in Syria is quite different from that in the tribal villages in Iraq. There are two major reasons for this difference. First of all, most of the settled tribes belong to the Shiite sect of Islam. The Shiite believe themselves to be pure Muslims and therefore are very conservative towards religious obligations. Secondly, if we look back at the Arab conquest, The Arab army itself never introduced a new culture in the region, it was actually the fusion of the religion (Islam) and the local cultures of the conquered people which in the time developed into a universal Islamic culture. So, it is understandable that now all the Muslim countries will have the exact same way of life, yet their fundamental family beliefs will , no doubt, stem from the sources of the Islamic law. The conservative outlook of the Shiite is somewhat misleading, for it may seem that family life is very monotonous, but on the contrary it is rather very complex. However, the drugs usually become a major problem affecting their life as the years pass on. Drugs soon become an addiction and lead people s life astray. The addiction itself can be considered a brain disease because drugs change the function and structure of the brain (NIH, 2014). The brain is made up of a variety of parts that all interconnect to take out a specific job. When drugs are consumed they cause the brain to stop functioning in the way that it usually does. Drugs can affect three primary areas of the brain and these include: The brain stem, the cerebral cortex and the limbic system. (Brain and addiction, 2014) For most people the initial decision to consume or inject any type of drug is voluntary. NAEYC Guidelines For Affective Development Affective development can be defined as the emergence of the emotional capacity to experience, recognize, and express a range of emotions to adequately response to emotional cues of others. Adults play a very important role in the affective development in children. Now more than ever, children are being raised in a very unpredictable world. Adults are now taking on a much greater challenge when working with young children to help set the foundation for affective development. When it comes to the educational side of affective development, teachers are given NAEYC guidelines to help in their decision making. These guidelines are designed to promote competent young children. It is very important when teaching or caring for children that we offer them a caring community to learn (Charlesworth, 2014). The foundation of the community is consistent, positive, caring relationships between adults and children, among children, among teachers and between teachers and families (Charlesworth, 2014). What this ultimately means as a teacher, is that you need to provide to these children a safe and secure place to learn. It is also very important to keep in mind that teaching is about enhancing development, and ensuring that students know that you genuinely respect, and want what s best for them. These poetic devices are used to convey the message that the people who die in her town are not treated with the respect they should be. They also provide insight into the severity of the author s situation and allow the meaning of the work to come to fruition. Without similes the author would not be able to invoke the feelings of sadness and desperation the work gives the reader. They give insight into the author s internal thoughts and how she perceives her situation. Similes and metaphors provide a clear picture of the despondent world that the author lived in. In the first simile, the author gives an air of hope describing the bodies as stiff [cocoons] that will split down the center / when the new life inside is prepared (10 11). Although they are dead, Olds alludes to the idea that they may be reborn again comparing them to a caterpillar and their death being a new beginning instead of an end. Oppositely, she says that most of the deceased lay like corpses... / with no sign of peace wanting to come back (12 16). This take on death is the exact opposite of the former, it is filled with dread and hopelessness. Both these similes act as an extended metaphor for the attitude of the author. She is conflicted between the escape of death and the life that she has built for herself. She ends the poem with the lines even to the bread made of glue and sawdust, / even to the icy winter and the siege. (17 18). In addition, the fact she says most of the corpses look as if they want to return, Olds loves her existence, even though the suffering she endures everyday is excruciating, it s better than the nothingness that is death. Also, the author says that the bodies lay like corpses, this comes across as odd because one would expect bodies to do so, making this statement seem obvious. However, before she uses this simile, she uses the two others about trees and cocoons which make death seem more cerebral than it actually is. But towards the end of ...
