Tanglewood Case 3 Summary
The 4/5 ratio shows that there is evidence that points disparate impact discrimination in the
Tanglewood organization for most job categories. There are a few job categories that hit the 80% of
the 4/5 rule. The store associate white to non white and white to African American comparison
computed in the 90% ratio. The internal shift leader white to non white computed at 79%, the internal
and external department manager white to nonwhite both ranked above 80%, and the internal assistant
store manager white to African American ranked at 89%. All other job categories fell well below the
80%. The worst category was store manager internal and external white to African American. Both of
these comparisons showed 0% of African Americans have been hired for a store manager position.
The lack of diversity in the upper management will cause legal issues for Tanglewood.
The concentration data also shows evidence that point to disparate impact discrimination in the
Tanglewood organization across all job categories. The store manager categories again showed to be
the worst category. The white concentration for the store manager is 69.57%, non white is 30.43% and
African Americans is 0%.The highest African American concentration was found in the store associate
category. This category shows white concentration at 83.59%, non white ... Show more content on

Essay Afghanistan and Politics
Afghanistan and Politics
An Examination of Nation Building in Afghanistan and East Timor Afghanistan is a shattered society.
The participants in the Bonn Conference have set for the leaders and people of their country the
formidable challenge of consolidating the peace process in less than three years. But it will take much
more than 36 months to heal the wounds left by 23 years of war. The process of healing has started,
however, and the members of the international community must be careful not to allow that process to
reverse itself. This requires from all, a continued commitment and determination to stay the course. It
also requires that realistic and achievable objectives be set.

But as Kofi Annan reported on March 18, 2002, it will take more than a quick fix to repair the years of
trauma and war that have wrecked this extremely poor country.
In recent years, the UN has been entrusted with providing assistance to several countries in post
conflict situation, including the newly independent East Timor, now renamed Timor Leste. The
experiences of the United Nations in East Timor have shown that the reestablishment, at a minimum,
of basic judicial functions must be among a mission s top priorities from the earliest stages of
deployment. Looking into the role of the UN intervention in East Timor, it is possible to apply the
lessons learned in the violence wrought country on the current situation at Afghanistan to create a
sustainable environment for constructive nation building.

Avant-Garde Research Paper
This paper is an explanatory paper by a cultured gentleman on Avant Garde art and the challenges
facing Avant Garde. More specifically, it comes off as a rant against the bourgeois and proletariat for
failing to appreciate Avant Garde art and instead preferring to art he calls the rear guard art or Kitsch.
This work was printed by the Parisian review during fall, 1939. The author, a blatant supporter of
Avant Garde art defines it as the revolutionary style that was indicative of the progression of human
thought and culture. The brave new frontier that was the hall mark of the 20th century, a distinctive
style was solely a product of their generation of artists. Avant Garde art represent art that has been

It is in fact Rear Garde. Kitsch is a style that has persisted, the form that emerged during the peak of
classical art, where the accuracy of depiction was the hallmark of good art. Kitsch does not change, it
remains the same, impervious to progress, resistant to new ideas. Kitsch is art appreciated by the
bourgeois and the simple folk. Before the industrial revolution, art and the appreciation of art was a
preserve of the rich. These people commissioned artists to produce works, and the patrons would then
display these works. The simpler folks would admire the work for its beauty and accuracy of
depiction, and also admire the patrons for their ability to commission such a work. It was the true
mark of culture. The industrial revolution however resulted into increased resources for everyone. The
artists were able to rely less on their patrons, and thus gained freedom in their ideas and expression
thereof, the simple folk were now able to afford to buy paintings, and they did. However,
understanding a work of art requires education, time and freedom from the pressing constraints of life
in order to ponder over the symbology, technique and other aspects of a work. Industrialization
resulted into increased levels of the literacy, but imbued in the individual none of the culture that is
necessary to appreciate art. Therefore, kitsch developed. Works of art appeal only to the eye and leave
no mark on the brain or intellect. These works of art are so perfect, so detailed that they leave nothing
to the imagination of the audience. New bourgeois who have no concept of true art consume these
works greedily under the impression that they are cultured. But a true cultured person will revolt
against Kitsch for it is intellectually dead, dead weight holding back the progress of

Essay On The Beast In Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the Flies Essay
After experiencing events such as the horrors of World War II, William Golding represents the evil
nature of mankind as the Beast in his novel Lord of the Flies. Although an illusionary character, the
beast had the most influence in the development of savagery throughout the story. It is used to gain
power, it is the violence within the boys and it is a factor that drives them towards a tribe like form of
savagery.
Golding uses the Beast to help disrupt the balance of power within the island. Ralph s method of
dealing with things is democratic and revolves around the overall benefit of the group. This is shown
in many instances where he prioritises long term benefits over immediate ones such as when he
proposes to build shelters (pg.65) instead of focusing on food. Jack, on the other hand, has an
impulsive and selfish mindset, having been fixed on personal benefits whether they are long term or
not. In the case of using the beast, the long term benefit for Jack would be having control or power
over the island. Instead of denying that there is a beastie , (pg. 47) like Ralph would, Jack
acknowledges the fact that there is a strong fear of the beast, which lingers amongst the boys. By
saying he would hunt the beast down, (pg. 114) Jack manipulate this fear and provides a quicker, more
satisfying solution as opposed to ignoring it. Because of this, Jack provides the respected opinion
when the beast is brought up and in turn further validates his

Nurses play many roles in today s society; they have to balance family, life, and their job. Nursing is a
very demanding profession; you are caring for the sick with limited resources causing nurses to create
unrealistic expectations (Bush, 2009). Nurses create a tireless arrangement and emotional connections
with patients, shouldering a huge supporting role. Supporting this role causes nurses to feel emotional
exhaustion and the weight of care for patients can become overwhelming. Signs of emotional
exhaustion can cause nurse to become hostile, isolated, start crying for no reason, and getting upset
(Bush, 2009). Apathy means lack of concern or interest, as well as lack of emotion or feelings (Bush,
2009). Exhaustion of emotional reserves can cause nurses to become apathetic, uncaring, and
preoccupied. It takes a toll psychologically on the mind causing emotional overload before a nurse
becomes numb to emotions. Apathy eventually causes you to feel fatigued and a lack of concentration
and reduced productivity at work. Long term apathy can cause absenteeism and tardiness, complaints
by co workers and patients, and result in job termination (Bush, 2009). Depression happens when
someone has extreme feeling of hopelessness and sadness. Signs of depression include lack of one s

Government Classifying Marijuana
One of the ways the government fits into how we classify using concepts is by altering our perception
and in the process effecting the way we classify things and people. The government often does this
through the laws and regulations that they create. High standing government officials that garner a
great deal of respect may also alter our perceptions through speeches that they make. Sometimes the
government and officials are trying to alter our perceptions in an attempt to make us classify things the
way that they do, while other times our altered perceptions are an unintended consequence. Whether
the altering of our perceptions is intentional or not it can and does affect the way that we classify
things and people. The differences in the way people classify marijuana is a very good example of
how the government laws and our own experiences effect our perceiving lenses and therefore the way
we classify concepts. In this case the federal government has already attempted to classify marijuana
and other controlled substances by grouping them together with other drugs that they believe have
similarities. They list ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We simply accept what we are told and look no further. Those of us that believe that the governments
classification is wrong have probably experienced one or more things that have caused us to see the
drug through a different perceiving lens and due to our particular view we classify it very differently.
It is possible that we have used marijuana recreationally or know someone who has and have not
noted any major side effects. Someone else may have read studies that indicate that marijuana is not
addictive and is not really that bad for us. It is also possible that we have reason to disagree with the

The hospitality industry is a very lucrative and rewarding career choice. Choosing a career in this field

They must provide owners with a reasonable return on investment, keep guest satisfied and returning,
and keep employees happy. This may seem easy, but because there are so many interpersonal
transactions and because hotels are open every day, all day, the complexities of operating become
challenge that the general manager must face and overcome. The GM not only focuses on leading and
operating the hotel departments but also on aspects of the infrastructure, from room atmosphere to
security (Walker, 2013).
If a restaurant is inside of a hotel, then the food and beverage division is overseen by the general
manager of the hotel. In this scenario the person that runs the food and beverage division is referred to
as the director of food and beverage. In this case, the director reports to the general manager of the
hotel. However, if there is a free standing restaurant, bar, or lounge; there is a general manager who is
responsible for the entire operations of that establishment. If the restaurant, bar, or lounge is a
freestanding establishment, the owner will sometimes double as the general manager and do the job on
their own without hiring someone. Sometimes owners will hire an individual to fill the job as General
Manager, especially if they have invested in a restaurant and do not have any experience in how to run
it properly.

The flight catering industry is very famous in the world. Each year more than 1 billion passenger are

The American Of Revolt Against Great Britain
There were many reasons that the American colonies decided to revolt against Great Britain, but some
of the more major causes of the American revolution were the banning of arms , the very unpopular
Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act, and the Boston Tea Port Acts. Another unpopular Act enforced on the
colonies, by His Majesty of Great Britain, was the now famous Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a set of
laws created by the King and parliament, saying that the American colonists had to pay more taxes
than the people in Great Britain were paying, as a way to pay off the cost of the Seven Years War. This
Act was upsetting to the colonists because they didn t get the chance to have a say in wether or not
they were okay with/wanted such large taxes being imposed upon them. This can be seen in Document
A, when the colonists wrote in a letter to the king that it is inseparably essential to the freedom of a
people, and the undoubted right of Englishmen, that no taxes be imposed on them, but with their own
consent, given personally, or by their representatives. This quote shows that the colonists did not agree
with the taxation, or at least not without them being represented in Great Britain. The King placing all
of these taxes on the American colonies made them feel as if they were not being treated as actual
Englishmen, but rather as the outcasts and criminals that no one else wanted. This is evident in the
letter written to the King, when the colonies say that His Majesty s

Helicopter Parenting And Its Influence On Children s Life
Helicopter parenting has gained increasing awareness in popular media, academic literature, and the
general population. For example, recently, several popular parenting books have raised awareness
about parental over involvement and how it may be associated with negative outcomes. The term
helicopter parent was first used in a famous parenting book, Parents Teenagers by Dr. Haim Ginott in
1969, by teenagers who described their parents as hovering over them , like a helicopter. This term
refers to a parenting style that is over focused on children; being involved in a child s life in ways that
are over controlling and overprotective. Lester Smith defines helicopter or overprotective parents as
having a heightened surveillance of their children s lives (September 14, 2015), so that children are
never allowed to experience risk. This term is commonly applied to parents of college aged or high
school students who believe that their children are not capable of doing tasks alone, so they might call
a professor about their child s poor grades or manage their child s class schedule for them. Schiffrin et
al. (2013) emphasize children s need for autonomy and explain how this need increases over time as
they strive to become independent young adults (p. 529). Therefore, parents are recommended to
adjust their level of involvement and control to their child s developmental level (Schiffrin et al.,
2013, p. 529). However, many parents do not make this adjustment, and this

This source is very closely related to my research question regarding age and attitudes towards
cyberbullying. The study broke down the participants into five age groups and examined their
cyberbullying attitudes, perpetrations, and technology time. It determined that there is a negative
correlation between age and these variables, showing that generally, those who are younger are more
likely to believe that cyberbullying is a major concern for school going minors. That being said, the
youngest and oldest groups generally are less likely to have this attitude since they are not likely to
have experienced cyberbullying. The middle groups most likely have direct or indirect experience
with this problem. However, it was found that overall, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This study looked at a number of different factors related to cyberbullying, particularly focusing on
the victims themselves. The section on age and grade level most relates to my research topic. They
found that in their research on students in fifth, eight, and tenth grades, cyberbullying victimization
rates started low, rose in middle school, and sank again in high school. It appears that there is a
curvilinear relationship between age and frequency of victimization and according to this study, the
worst cyberbullying occurs in middle school. Therefore, this would imply that attitudes towards
cyberbullying and its threat to school going minors would be low at young ages, increase through
puberty and adolescence, and decrease again after around ninth grade. While it relates topically to the
two previous sources, the findings of this study are slightly different than them. This one highlights
that the relationship takes a parabolic or curved shape compared to a straight negative slope.

potential prey. Seeing a possible snack, the cone snail will gently extend its modified radula tooth,
which looks like a harpoon, toward its prey. Though snails are thought to be slow, its harpoon shoots

Constitutional Basis For Public Health Action
Module 2: The Constitutional and Legal Basis for Public Health Action
Government and population are two characteristics that differentiate public health law from other
laws. In public health law, government is the actor, legislature, congress, city council, city

circumstances. Second characteristic of public health law, population or group of people who share
similar characteristics.
The essential services of public health are prevention and welfare of the public s health.
The important concept in the constitutional basis for public health action is protect the community and

For more than 300 years white cedar was used to line the cedar chests that people store their clothes
in. When the clothes were taken from the chest they had the great fresh cedar smell that we all
enjoyed. A cedar sauna also provides same great aroma as it was heated. Frequently the sauna stove
was fueled with white cedar kindling. A cedar fire will snap loudly and quickly give a hot fire heating
the cedar sauna in a matter of minutes even in the dead of winter. Once the cedar sauna was heated,
water was ladled on the stove rocks releasing moisture that further increased the cedar aroma. A white
cedar sauna had more benefits that just a great aroma. White cedar is softwood that is very easy to

Floors were also frequently constructed with cedar boards that were spaced to allow the water to
naturally drain through them. A cedar floor is a lot warmer during the winter months as well. In some
locations that have poorly drained soils a drainage system must be built beneath the sauna to carry
excess water away. A good sauna must also have a good door that insulates and seals the heat inside.
Because cedar is a good insulator and is a very light weight wood it is ideal for constructing a sauna

Death Of A Salesman And The American Dream
The United States in the mid twentieth century was a time of change. In the 1960 s the civil rights and
women s rights were in their embryonic stages. All of these ideas coming together created the illusion
of The American Dream. Back then; the American dream was equated with freedom and material
prosperity, two concepts that ring true today. The definition of the American dream changes as society
in the United States changes, and the connotation and reality of the American Dream is disheartening.
Two literary compositions give a realistic outlook on what the American Dream really is. In Death of a
Salesman and The American Dream, Arthur Miller and Edward Albee masterfully relay the true nature
and ideologies of The American Dream. In theory, the American Dream is the idea that every person
residing in the United States of America should live a richer and fuller life, regardless of the class one
is born in. It is not a dream about cars, high wages, and a picket fence. The idea, for it to work, is
supposed to be that every man and woman in this beautiful country has the ability to gain the highest
class in their ability regardless of their previous background. The ability to achieve such high success
is based on academic success and hard work. In current times, it seems the American Dream has
become a pursuit of material objects. Citizens of the United States work countless hours to be able to
afford bigger cars, better homes, and the newest technologies. On the surface,

The Handmaid s Tale Literacy Essay
ENG4U: The Handmaid s Tale Literacy Essay Shoshannah Lewis Margret Atwood s The Handmaid s
Tale takes place in the closely monitored, male dominant area of Gilead where women are deprived of
their sexual and human rights, forbidding them to live independently. For many years prior to Gilead s
existence, women were seen as inferior to men and neglected of basic human rights such as voting,
career opportunities, and equal salaries. The Republic of Gilead was later introduced following the
transition of the United States government into a totalitarian leadership style, giving the government
complete and all power amongst society. Very similar to the second wave of feminism, where women
fought for reproductive rights, women are doing so in this near future setting of Gilead. In the novel, a
future is revealed in which female fertility has completely dwindled. Thus, women who are still fertile
are labeled Handmaid s and are sent to different upper class commanders for reproduction. With this
being said, the fact that only certain women are capable of reproduction forces completion amongst
the sex due to the high sexual standards society expects the female gender to meet. The novel follows
a Handmaid by the name of Offred, and her fight with sexual repression and exploitation of women
within the corrupt Republic of Gilead s. Atwood takes an alternative method of portraying feminism
throughout this novel by writing a stark contrast of feminism, portraying the women within The

Maxine Hong Kingston s The Woman Warrior Essay
Maxine Hong Kingston s The Woman Warrior Maxine Hong Kingston s novel, The Woman Warrior is
a semi autobiographical collection of short stories that chronicles her childhood in California. It gives
the reader a feeling of how it feels like to be a Chinese American girl growing up with traditional
parents in a world that is quite different from theirs. Throughout the novel, both she and her mother
refer to the outside world as ghosts. The subtitle given to the book is Memoirs of a Girlhood Among
Ghosts. To figure out the meaning behind this subtitle, one has to try to see what ... Show more

It is here where we see Kingston use the term ghost in a manner to mean stranger. She writes, America
has been full of machines and ghosts – Taxi Ghosts, Bus Ghosts, Police Ghosts, Fire Ghosts, Meter
Reader Ghosts, Tree Trimming Ghosts Five and Dime Ghosts. This description gives the reader the
culture shock that someone who has just moved to the US can get. It may be a very unnerving
experience to be surrounded by so many strange and alien things.
Despite her mother using the term ghost to be vaguely insulting, it does not seem that way when
Kingston uses this term for people. For example is in the chapter A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe.
She labels her Negro friends as black ghosts. When she labels gives them this name, it is not as if she
is using this term in a derogatory manner. Since her mother has always referred to strangers as ghosts,
she has picked up the same habit. In this context, it is as if she refers to her friends in an affectionate
manner when she calls them ghosts.
Storytelling (or in the case of this novel, talk story ) also plays a crucial role in this book. Within each
chapter, there are other smaller stories that are a part

Analysis Of Lac Su s Memoir I Love Yous
When newcomers come to the United States, they are still on a journey of pain and suffering. Even if
they can get to the United States they still must go through the trail of owing nothing in a world where
everything is against their odds. This is the journey that author Lac Su wrote in his memoir I Love
Yous Are For White People which is about when he and his family immigrated to the United States
during the aftermath of the Vietnam War and their new life in LA county. His journey is not a unique
one as many refugees and immigrants experienced what he and his family experienced in their new
lives. In their new lives, many different events occurred that tells the problem all immigrants
encounter when adjusting to life in America. Using Lac ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Professor Vo mentioned the idea that many immigrant families whose descendants grow up in the
United States as opposed to their home country tend to grow up differently. An example is the
multigenerational Japanese families living in the United States as growing up the first generation
made their entire families and future generations act very Americanized to assimilate into the
community. This idea is not forgotten in Su s memoir when he talks about wearing a suit at Bob Big
Boy s, I don t want to wear my suit. ... We are going to be eating with white people. If you don t look
nice they will look down upon you (Su 57). Here Su mentions about how he does not want to wear his
suit for something that seemed so trivial while his father insists he does so that they impress the white
people that they can act and look like them. It can then be assumed that early on in his childhood, his
family wanted to be like the white community so that they could better fit in when living in America.
However, this proves to become contradictory later in the memoir when Su tells his father that he
loves him. His father s response, Are you trying to imitate those white people by telling me those
fucking words? (Su 150). This proves to become quite a contradictory response to what he previously
told his son before of not being looked down by the white people, yet his very actions here is one that

The Protestant Reformation Of The Western Church During...
The Protestant Reformation was the religious revolution that took place in the Western church during
the 16th century and was initially aimed at reforming the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic
Church. Western Christianity was developed in the areas of the former
Western Roman Empire and consisted of the Latin Church of the Roman Catholic Church, the
Waldensians, and Hussites, along with a wide variety of Protestant denominations, that include
Anglicanism, Anabaptism, Calvinism, and Lutheranism. This movement is said to have been sparked
by Martin Luther in 1517 and resulted in the split of Western Christianity.
During the Reformation, Martin Luther was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, monk
who was a very significant and influential figure. Luther s teachings state that redemption and eternal
life after death are not earned by the good deeds performed throughout your life. Instead, salvation is
only received as a gift of God s grace through how strong one s faith is in Jesus Christ as redeemer
from sin. This theology he believed in challenged the authority of the church and Pope by teaching
that the Bible is the only source of knowledge from
God. Luther also openly opposed sacerdotalism by considering all baptized Christians to be a holy
priesthood. Sacerdotalism is the belief that propitiatory sacrifices for sin require the

intervention of a priest along with the belief that a special order of men, called the Levitical
Priesthood, are the only

The Negative Effect Of Polarization As The Presidential...
We live in a world blanketed by the darkness of ignorance. Instead of blindly searching for the black
or white answers, we must defeat the enemy by moving toward common ground. Currently in politics,
we see the negative effect of polarization as the presidential campaign has become candidate centered
rather than issue centered. We see the candidates resort to bully like tactics where they attack each
other personally, rather than focusing on the issues at hand. While it is said that polarity is an integral
part of nature, we need our differences to bring us together as a whole, rather than drive us apart.
Polarization is inevitable due to the unique design of every individual, but issues are seen as either

Aviation In World War 1
Aviation in World War One The first widespread use of aerial warfare. Military aviation began in the
1860 s, during the American Civil War, when both sides used balloons to observe each other
(Winchester 2007). On December 17, 1903, the American brothers Wright took the first successful
flight in history. The idea of flying was thought impossible to many but it had always been a dream of
mankind. A dream had become reality. World War One (1914 1918) was the first conflict where
aircraft was involved on a large scale, playing a significant role. Fighter aircrafts would scout the
enemy s territory to discover weak points and exposed flanks in the enemy s lines. Bombing by the
first planes was extremely primitive, as the pilots would aim the missile and then drop it by hand.
Although these airplanes were helpful in receiving information about the enemy, the production of
airplanes was expensive and time consuming. The risk pilots took in flying the simple aircrafts in
World War One was immense. An average British pilot had a life expectancy of about seventy hours
when flying along the Western front , and the aircrafts were often too small to include a parachute.
The first successful air combats took place within weeks of the outbreak of the Great War. The Royal
Flying Corps (RFC, formed in 1912) met the German Air Service and forced them down (Winchester
2007). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

start his sculpting. Later, relocating to Rome in 1498 Michelangelo career was in full swing when he
was commissioned to carve the sculpture now known today as Pieta which was a statue of the Virgin
Mary holding a lifeless Jesus in her lap after his crucifixion. Returning to Florence Michelangelo had
become somewhat popular throughout the city. Taking on a project many other sculptures failed to
complete Michelangelo took over the commission for the statue David , the seventeen foot sculpture
was so impressive with its humility and appearance it became a prized possession of the city of
Florence. More opportunities presented themselves before one of the biggest ones came along that
would make Michelangelo known worldwide, the Sistine chapel.
Michelangelo was actually in the processes of building the tomb for Pope Julius II until he was asked
to decorate the Sistine chapel. This sparked his imagination for the design of the canvas and he got to

Armed Police Uniforms
Armed police officers create discrimination?
Do you think police officers should be armed if their job is to protect schools? Many will argue yes
because of safety reasons, but what if that leads to bigger problems? This has been a debate for years
and has caused to create many rules that have or have not worked. For example the Gun Free schools
Act or the zero tolerance policies. Although it protects students and can create a safe and secure
environment, police officers in schools should not be armed because it can create discrimination,
officers will feel with more power and authority, and take away student s education.
However, many might think police officers should be armed in case of an emergency. There has been
many incidents where shootings occurs at schools and the police officer s job is to protect themselves
and the lives of students and staff at any cost. You can argue this to be a good reason to allow police
officers to carry weapons. They feel they should be armed for protection, but many police officers take
advantage of that and feel they have the power to do anything, even to break a law. It is not right for
police officers to think they can break laws because everyone is equal and having armed police
officers will damage students in other ways.
Police officers do contribute to an environment of discrimination. Immigration has been a big problem
in our society because people like Donald Trump, for example, think immigrants got here to destroy
the country.

Events That Have Changed America
The events that occurred in the United States and around the world in 1968 have changed many
aspects of life, for good and bad. That year brought tremendous changes with too many to choose
from; therefore, I chose what I felt were three of extraordinary significance. The first events were the
assignations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Both men were public figures and their
untimely deaths had a tremendous impact on America. Martin Luther King Jr. s assignation only
increased the racial tensions and riots in America. (Shultz, 2014).
Robert F. Kennedy s assignation opened the door for Richard Nixon to be elected president of the
United States.
Second, was the revealing of Boeing s 747; it was the largest plane of its time.

Post Civil War Foreign Policy Analysis
One of the U.S government s main functions is to conduct relations with almost 200 nations in the
world. It is designed to further certain goals and assure Americas security and defense. Our foreign
policy has changed over time reflecting the change in nation interest. (Constitutional Rights
Foundation) The U.S main interest was to maintain its independence from European countries. This
was carried out by the Monroe Doctrine, which limited European attempts to further colonize the
Western Hemisphere. Post civil war foreign policy was a departure from pre foreign policy because of
their actions and motivations. The acquisition of contiguous territory in pre civil war policy departed

They feel it is their duty to educate the deprived races, and as they travel to new nations Americans
carry with them their Christian beliefs. Josiah Strong was a big believer of divinely commissioned ,
that God wants Americans to spread the word of God. Although the second Manifest Destiny shares
all of these aspects with the first seeming like a broken continuation, the second Manifest Destiny is
also very much a departure from the original beliefs. Expansion became a huge competition between
the nations. The United States was expanding to foreign lands, but not simply to achieve a goal, now
the US wanted to compete with Europe and take natural resources from conquered territories. America
needed more resources because it was going through a period of overproduction, as evidenced by the
depression of 1893. This way the United States wouldn t merely gain more natural resources, but also
new markets, new capitol, and new labor. As Americans set out to lay claim to these new territories,
they left with the Social Darwinism belief that stronger ones will naturally dominate weaker nations.
Joshia Strong the author of Our Country: Its Possible Future and Its Present Crisis said, the
unoccupied arable lands of the earth are limited, and will soon be taken also, that the Anglo Saxon
white race highest race should rule, and govern the weaker races.

The participants in the Bonn Conference have set for the leaders and people of their country the formidable challenge of consolidating the peace process in less than three years. But it will take much more than 36 months to heal the wounds left by 23 years of war. The process of healing has started, however, and the members of the international community must be careful not to allow that process to reverse itself. This requires from all, a continued commitment and determination to stay the course. It also requires that realistic and achievable objectives be set. ~Kofi Annan, Report of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But as Kofi Annan reported on March 18, 2002, it will take more than a quick fix to repair the years of trauma and war that have wrecked this extremely poor country. In recent years, the UN has been entrusted with providing assistance to several countries in post conflict situation, including the newly independent East Timor, now renamed Timor Leste. The experiences of the United Nations in East Timor have shown that the reestablishment, at a minimum, of basic judicial functions must be among a mission s top priorities from the earliest stages of deployment. Looking into the role of the UN intervention in East Timor, it is possible to apply the lessons learned in the violence wrought country on the current situation at Afghanistan to create a sustainable environment for constructive nation building. Relief Efforts: The United Nations in Afghanistan Many United Nations agencies are working together to help rebuild war torn Afghanistan. Among them are the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Children s Fund, and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. • 4. Avant-Garde Research Paper This paper is an explanatory paper by a cultured gentleman on Avant Garde art and the challenges facing Avant Garde. More specifically, it comes off as a rant against the bourgeois and proletariat for failing to appreciate Avant Garde art and instead preferring to art he calls the rear guard art or Kitsch. This work was printed by the Parisian review during fall, 1939. The author, a blatant supporter of Avant Garde art defines it as the revolutionary style that was indicative of the progression of human thought and culture. The brave new frontier that was the hall mark of the 20th century, a distinctive style was solely a product of their generation of artists. Avant Garde art represent art that has been freed from the constraints of rules ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is in fact Rear Garde. Kitsch is a style that has persisted, the form that emerged during the peak of classical art, where the accuracy of depiction was the hallmark of good art. Kitsch does not change, it remains the same, impervious to progress, resistant to new ideas. Kitsch is art appreciated by the bourgeois and the simple folk. Before the industrial revolution, art and the appreciation of art was a preserve of the rich. These people commissioned artists to produce works, and the patrons would then display these works. The simpler folks would admire the work for its beauty and accuracy of depiction, and also admire the patrons for their ability to commission such a work. It was the true mark of culture. The industrial revolution however resulted into increased resources for everyone. The artists were able to rely less on their patrons, and thus gained freedom in their ideas and expression thereof, the simple folk were now able to afford to buy paintings, and they did. However, understanding a work of art requires education, time and freedom from the pressing constraints of life in order to ponder over the symbology, technique and other aspects of a work. Industrialization resulted into increased levels of the literacy, but imbued in the individual none of the culture that is necessary to appreciate art. Therefore, kitsch developed. Works of art appeal only to the eye and leave no mark on the brain or intellect. These works of art are so perfect, so detailed that they leave nothing to the imagination of the audience. New bourgeois who have no concept of true art consume these works greedily under the impression that they are cultured. But a true cultured person will revolt against Kitsch for it is intellectually dead, dead weight holding back the progress of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Essay On The Beast In Lord Of The Flies Lord of the Flies Essay After experiencing events such as the horrors of World War II, William Golding represents the evil nature of mankind as the Beast in his novel Lord of the Flies. Although an illusionary character, the beast had the most influence in the development of savagery throughout the story. It is used to gain power, it is the violence within the boys and it is a factor that drives them towards a tribe like form of savagery. Golding uses the Beast to help disrupt the balance of power within the island. Ralph s method of dealing with things is democratic and revolves around the overall benefit of the group. This is shown in many instances where he prioritises long term benefits over immediate ones such as when he proposes to build shelters (pg.65) instead of focusing on food. Jack, on the other hand, has an impulsive and selfish mindset, having been fixed on personal benefits whether they are long term or not. In the case of using the beast, the long term benefit for Jack would be having control or power over the island. Instead of denying that there is a beastie , (pg. 47) like Ralph would, Jack acknowledges the fact that there is a strong fear of the beast, which lingers amongst the boys. By saying he would hunt the beast down, (pg. 114) Jack manipulate this fear and provides a quicker, more satisfying solution as opposed to ignoring it. Because of this, Jack provides the respected opinion when the beast is brought up and in turn further validates his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Government Classifying Marijuana One of the ways the government fits into how we classify using concepts is by altering our perception and in the process effecting the way we classify things and people. The government often does this through the laws and regulations that they create. High standing government officials that garner a great deal of respect may also alter our perceptions through speeches that they make. Sometimes the government and officials are trying to alter our perceptions in an attempt to make us classify things the way that they do, while other times our altered perceptions are an unintended consequence. Whether the altering of our perceptions is intentional or not it can and does affect the way that we classify things and people. The differences in the way people classify marijuana is a very good example of how the government laws and our own experiences effect our perceiving lenses and therefore the way we classify concepts. In this case the federal government has already attempted to classify marijuana and other controlled substances by grouping them together with other drugs that they believe have similarities. The GM not only focuses on leading and operating the hotel departments but also on aspects of the infrastructure, from room atmosphere to security (Walker, 2013). If a restaurant is inside of a hotel, then the food and beverage division is overseen by the general manager of the hotel. In this scenario the person that runs the food and beverage division is referred to as the director of food and beverage. In this case, the director reports to the general manager of the hotel. However, if there is a free standing restaurant, bar, or lounge; there is a general manager who is responsible for the entire operations of that establishment. If the restaurant, bar, or lounge is a freestanding establishment, the owner will sometimes double as the general manager and do the job on their own without hiring someone. The American Of Revolt Against Great Britain There were many reasons that the American colonies decided to revolt against Great Britain, but some of the more major causes of the American revolution were the banning of arms , the very unpopular Stamp Act, the Declaratory Act, and the Boston Tea Port Acts. Another unpopular Act enforced on the colonies, by His Majesty of Great Britain, was the now famous Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a set of laws created by the King and parliament, saying that the American colonists had to pay more taxes than the people in Great Britain were paying, as a way to pay off the cost of the Seven Years War. This Act was upsetting to the colonists because they didn t get the chance to have a say in wether or not they were okay with/wanted such large taxes being imposed upon them. This can be seen in Document A, when the colonists wrote in a letter to the king that it is inseparably essential to the freedom of a people, and the undoubted right of Englishmen, that no taxes be imposed on them, but with their own consent, given personally, or by their representatives. This quote shows that the colonists did not agree with the taxation, or at least not without them being represented in Great Britain. The King placing all of these taxes on the American colonies made them feel as if they were not being treated as actual Englishmen, but rather as the outcasts and criminals that no one else wanted. This is evident in the letter written to the King, when the colonies say that His Majesty s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Helicopter Parenting And Its Influence On Children s Life Helicopter parenting has gained increasing awareness in popular media, academic literature, and the general population. For example, recently, several popular parenting books have raised awareness about parental over involvement and how it may be associated with negative outcomes. The term helicopter parent was first used in a famous parenting book, Parents Teenagers by Dr. Haim Ginott in 1969, by teenagers who described their parents as hovering over them , like a helicopter. This term refers to a parenting style that is over focused on children; being involved in a child s life in ways that are over controlling and overprotective. Lester Smith defines helicopter or overprotective parents as having a heightened surveillance of their children s lives (September 14, 2015), so that children are never allowed to experience risk. This term is commonly applied to parents of college aged or high school students who believe that their children are not capable of doing tasks alone, so they might call a professor about their child s poor grades or manage their child s class schedule for them. Schiffrin et al. (2013) emphasize children s need for autonomy and explain how this need increases over time as they strive to become independent young adults (p. 529). Therefore, parents are recommended to adjust their level of involvement and control to their child s developmental level (Schiffrin et al., 2013, p. 529). However, many parents do not make this adjustment, and this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The study broke down the participants into five age groups and examined their cyberbullying attitudes, perpetrations, and technology time. It determined that there is a negative correlation between age and these variables, showing that generally, those who are younger are more likely to believe that cyberbullying is a major concern for school going minors. That being said, the youngest and oldest groups generally are less likely to have this attitude since they are not likely to have experienced cyberbullying. The middle groups most likely have direct or indirect experience with this problem. However, it was found that overall, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This study looked at a number of different factors related to cyberbullying, particularly focusing on the victims themselves. The section on age and grade level most relates to my research topic. They found that in their research on students in fifth, eight, and tenth grades, cyberbullying victimization rates started low, rose in middle school, and sank again in high school. It appears that there is a curvilinear relationship between age and frequency of victimization and according to this study, the worst cyberbullying occurs in middle school. Therefore, this would imply that attitudes towards cyberbullying and its threat to school going minors would be low at young ages, increase through puberty and adolescence, and decrease again after around ninth grade. While it relates topically to the two previous sources, the findings of this study are slightly different than them. This one highlights that the relationship takes a parabolic or curved shape compared to a straight negative slope. Chaux, Enrique and Melisa Castellanos. In fact some homes did not have a shower or a tub in the home. Instead a Finnish sauna with its cold water spicket or shower took their place. The definition of the American dream changes as society in the United States changes, and the connotation and reality of the American Dream is disheartening. Two literary compositions give a realistic outlook on what the American Dream really is. The Handmaid s Tale Literacy Essay ENG4U: The Handmaid s Tale Literacy Essay Shoshannah Lewis Margret Atwood s The Handmaid s Tale takes place in the closely monitored, male dominant area of Gilead where women are deprived of their sexual and human rights, forbidding them to live independently. For many years prior to Gilead s existence, women were seen as inferior to men and neglected of basic human rights such as voting, career opportunities, and equal salaries. The Republic of Gilead was later introduced following the transition of the United States government into a totalitarian leadership style, giving the government complete and all power amongst society. Very similar to the second wave of feminism, where women fought for reproductive rights, women are doing so in this near future setting of Gilead. In the novel, a future is revealed in which female fertility has completely dwindled. Thus, women who are still fertile are labeled Handmaid s and are sent to different upper class commanders for reproduction. With this being said, the fact that only certain women are capable of reproduction forces completion amongst the sex due to the high sexual standards society expects the female gender to meet. The Protestant Reformation was the religious revolution that took place in the Western church during the 16th century and was initially aimed at reforming the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Western Christianity was developed in the areas of the former Western Roman Empire and consisted of the Latin Church of the Roman Catholic Church, the Waldensians, and Hussites, along with a wide variety of Protestant denominations, that include Anglicanism, Anabaptism, Calvinism, and Lutheranism. Military aviation began in the 1860 s, during the American Civil War, when both sides used balloons to observe each other (Winchester 2007). On December 17, 1903, the American brothers Wright took the first successful flight in history. The idea of flying was thought impossible to many but it had always been a dream of mankind. A dream had become reality. World War One (1914 1918) was the first conflict where aircraft was involved on a large scale, playing a significant role. Fighter aircrafts would scout the enemy s territory to discover weak points and exposed flanks in the enemy s lines. Bombing by the first planes was extremely primitive, as the pilots would aim the missile and then drop it by hand. Although these airplanes were helpful in receiving information about the enemy, the production of airplanes was expensive and time consuming. The risk pilots took in flying the simple aircrafts in World War One was immense. An average British pilot had a life expectancy of about seventy hours when flying along the Western front , and the aircrafts were often too small to include a parachute. For example the Gun Free schools Act or the zero tolerance policies. Although it protects students and can create a safe and secure environment, police officers in schools should not be armed because it can create discrimination, officers will feel with more power and authority, and take away student s education.
