Character Analysis Of Pecola Breedlove
Pecola Breedlove is a young girl growing up black and poor in the early 1940s. She is repeatedly
called ugly by nearly everyone in her life, from the mean kids at school to her own mother. This
constant criticism, the relentless bullying she gets at school, and her rough family life (her parents are
always fighting, both verbally and physically) lead Pecola to seek escape from her misery by
fantasizing about becoming more beautiful. Pecola begins to believe that if she could just achieve
physical beauty, her life would automatically improve. This false belief turns out to be utterly
destructive to Pecola, consuming her whole life and, eventually, her sanity. Pecola is a young African
American girl, born to Cholly and Pauline Breedlove. She has a brother and her family lives in a small
house on the edge of town. Pecola s father was an alcoholic and he abused his wife and Pecola, both
physically and sexually. Pecola is not beautiful and she wishes for nothing more than blond hair and
blue eyes. She prays everyday to God to make her beautiful. The character s inner struggle is self
confidence because she believes she is ugly. Pecola is quiet, shy, and introverted due to her low self
esteem level. There s something that I am not in accordance with Pecola and that is that she lets the
negativity from other people get to her. The idea of her thinking that she is ugly creates results from
her isolation from friends, the community, and even her family. There are three stages

Spiritual Journey In Critically Acclaimed Memoir
Gay Catholic Shares His Spiritual Journey in Critically Acclaimed Memoir The author, a long time
DignityUSA member, holds on to his Catholicism while affirming his homosexuality. Joseph Gentilini
cannot openly express his homosexuality when growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when it
was still considered a mental disorder. When society became more accepting of LGBT persons, he
wasted no time in expressing his true self, which brought him into a conflictual relationship with his
parents and his Catholic faith. Gentilini opens up about his spiritual journey in his memoir Hounded
By God: A Gay Man s Journey to Self Acceptance, Love, and Relationship (Dog Ear Publishing,
2013). Due to the attitudes of the past, Gentilini turned to journaling to express his inner thoughts and
feelings, which helped him to deepen his relationship with God and build self esteem. The book
highlights his coming out experiences, his relationship with his parents, his commitment to his partner,
and most importantly, his spirituality. Hounded By God refers to Gentilini being hounded by God for
resisting His loving presence in his life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Little Brother Succeeds By Cory Doctorow
In all mediums of storytelling, storylines never follow a singular plots. Writers often attempt to shovel
in various subplots as a means of trying to captivate audiences who are not as interested by the main
story. These subplots often revolve around the main story in the sense that they coexist but do not
affect it. This entirely ruins the purpose of including subplots, as they should intertwine with and
almost become a part of the main plotline. This is where Cory Doctorow s novel Little Brother
succeeds. Throughout the novel, Doctorow focuses mainly on the story of Marcus Yallow, a high
schooler living in San Francisco with gifted abilities in hacking, and his friends as he fights the
manipulative government branch: The Department of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He writes Ange and Marcus characters so that together, they have a natural chemistry together in both
dialogue and actions. At one point, near the middle of the novel, Marcus and Ange go out on date to
one of Ange s favorite restaurants. The two decide to go to a burrito place. While there, Ange pulls out
a stainless steel canister and excessively sprays her burrito with it s contents. Marcus asks her what
she sprays her burrito with, to which she informs him that This is like pepper spray but slightly more
dilute. And way more delicious. Think of it as Spicy Cajun Visine if it helps (68). There is no other
passage in the novel that can exhibit Marcus and Ange s almost comedic chemistry together so
perfectly. Ange is, by heart, more of an eccentric. She enjoys going out of her way so that she may eat
spicy foods. She has an excessively liberal sense of mind and lives life how she sees fit. On the other
hand, Marcus has a much more conservative mentalities despite literally fighting against the
government. He openly voices his disgust to his date in a way that lets Ange know he feels appalled,
but still still likes her by asking What the hell are you doing to that poor, defenseless burrito? (68).
The two are an unlikely pair that is both entertaining and relatable to readers. The sincerity of their

An Theoretical School District, School, And A Classroom
In this paper I am going to present an theoretical school district, school, and a classroom as examples
of
the ideal that our educational system should strive to achieve. The philosophy my schools will be
based
on is one of equality. Every single child will have an opportunity to receive the best possible
education.
However, we will never lower our standards for the sake of equality. Each child will be pushed to his
or
her personal best, not an average standard.
Before talking about what goes on inside the schools, I d like to mention the district itself. There will
be
no alternative school choices, bussing, or deliberate desegregation practices. Each school will be
remarkably similar to the others in the district so that every child may receive a similar education
regardless of the neighborhood they live in. When students are separated to different schools for any
reason (academic talent, wealth, interests, race, gender) they fail to interact with different types of
people that they will undoubtedly encounter in the real adult world. In addition, I feel that is very
important for children from the same neighborhood to attend the same school in order to increase a
sense of community. Finally, as the Case Study of Boulder Valley points out, school choice takes
valuable
resources away from teaching and places them in school competition (Howe 144).
Within a typical high school, there will be many different kinds of students. Likewise, there will be

Greek Influence On Minoan Society
Ancient Greece has influenced us today in so many ways. The first Greek people were the Minoans.
Their success was based on trade, instead of conquest. They set up trade outpost throughout the
Aegean world. They got new ideas about fields such as writing and architecture from Egypt and
Mesopotamia. They used these ideas and adapted them into their own culture. We learned a lot about
the Greek s from their frescoes, which are colorful paintings completed on wet plaster. They often
depicted Minoan society, and they told us that they valued the sea and they worshipped a bull as well
as a mother goddess. In about 1400 B.C., Minoan civilization disappeared, and the Mycenaeans
replaced them. The Mycenaeans were the first Greek speaking people ... Show more content on

They developed their own unique ways, at the same time. Specifically, Greeks developed news ideas
on governing each individual Greek polis. A polis is a city state. The earliest civilizations began
around fertile river valleys. Strong rulers organized ways or irrigation that helped produce surpluses of
food that were needed by large cities. By 750 B.C., a rapid population growth forced many Greeks to
leave the overcrowded valleys. Because fertile land was limited, the Greeks expanded overseas. The
gradual scattering of Greek colonies took place all around the Mediterranean from Spain to Egypt.
They carried their ideas and cultures to all the places they traveled. Greek civilizations had several
different types of government. A monarchy is a government system where a hereditary ruler exercises
a central power. Slowly the power shifted to a class of noble landowners. They could only afford
bronze weapons and chariots, so they were also military defenders of the city states. An aristocracy is
the rule by a hereditary landholding elite. As trade expanded, a new middle class emerged in some
cities. This class consisted of wealthy merchants, farmers, and artisans. They challenged landowning
nobles and then dominated some city states. The result of this was a form of government called an
oligarchy. Power is in the hands of a small, wealthy elite. The changes in military technology

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Essays
Mr. Smith is portrayed as an honest man with strong opinions. He is the ideal politician in an ideal
society. The film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington depicts a reassuring image that happens to be an
image of the past (Wheeler). However, in today s legislature, people like Mr. Smith are rare due to the
fact that a politician s primary goal is re election. The good of the people may come as another
intention of a politician, but it is always secondary to bringing home the pork. There should be more
people like Mr. Smith because the legislature would be able to make decisions more effectively and
efficiently, rather than how slowly they currently operate. This is an unfortunate truth, yet it is how our
society has been shaped to operate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taylor, a special interest group member, controlled everything Senator Paine did until he finally
decided to change. This denotes the impact that wealth can have in the government. The system is
designed so that things such as pork barreling can pass and sometimes need to pass in order for a law
to go through. This creates a system of lies and corruption, with members of the Senate not looking
out for the national good. Senators are forced to focus on improving their own district because it is all
they can do to ensure re election. The most successful Senators do this because it gains short term
approval from their district and gets them a future vote. This is a method of maintaining their career,
and is something they are in some cases forced to do. If someone like Mr. Smith came in and was
consistently free of corruption, people would vote for him based on his truthfulness. The legislature s
set up allows for corruption to exist in the government. The government shutdown of 2013 ended after
a deal was reached in the U.S. Senate that included a provision that raised the spending cap on a dam
construction project in Kentucky (Hudak). In this case, 2.2 billion dollars were set aside for this
project (Almasy). CNN s article stated: So much for a clean bill (Almasy). Despite the fact that the
major issue occurring was the government shutdown, Senator Mitch McConnell still pushed for his

Rabbit Proof Fence is a great film based on the real tale and experiences of three young Aboriginal
girls, Molly, Gracie and Daisy, who were taken against their will from their families in Jigalong,
Western Australia in 1931. The film puts a human face on the Stolen Generation , an event which
categorized links between the government and Aborigines in Australia for a lot of the 20th century.
The opening sequence of the Rabbit Proof Fence introduces you to the Aboriginal people. The scene
begins with white writing on a black background which informs us of the situation in Australia in
1931 and the effects it has had in Australia. This is followed by an aerial shot of Australia?s desert

The scene?s atmosphere then changes to introduce Riggs. This is signalled by being able to hear the
wind blowing to symbolise trouble coming. Riggs is wearing a uniform and shoes and carrying a gun
which shows he is superior. The effect of him being greater is also achieved by the low angle shot and,
for the first time in the film there are diegetic sounds. In the next scene, Mr Neville authorises the
removal of the girls from Jigalong. There is a low angle shot of Neville and there is low key lighting
which makes Mr Neville looks saintly yet sinister. He seems efficient and cold hearted. The scene then
switches back to Jigalong. Riggs arrives in a car which is odd to the girls, who may have never seen a
car, are then taken by Riggs. There is a build up of dramatic irony as Riggs approached the girls. The
women realise Riggs is there to take the girls to Moore River and begin to run. Riggs captures the girls
and shuts them inside the car. The women then beat the glass of the car with their hands, even though
they can?t connect through the glass. This evokes fear and sorrow in the audience. The girls then go
on a train to reach Moore River. They are in a cage and there are bars on the window, it seems like a
prison. They seem disoriented and traumatized from there facial expressions. The girls then arrive at
Moore River. At Moore River, there is an inspection. Mr

Internet and Cultural and Historical Diversity of Style in Composition
The technological revolution of the late twentieth century has arguably caused some of the greatest
changes in the global society. Few realize the full effects of the computer age. The Internet in
particular has brought the corners of the world closer together. Even in the most remote areas of the
globe, such as Katmandu, one can see an advertisement for e mail (Stefik 235). One might begin to
wonder what the social consequences of this pervasiveness are. The Internet brings many diverse
groups of people together to participate in many aspects of life from trade to conversations. Some
might wonder if these interactions might lead to an end of diversity. In ... Show more content on

The Internet is arguably the greatest breakthrough in information technology ever; it allows for instant
communication between people situated on other sides of the world. Furthermore, it allows for access
to virtually limitless information on a plethora of topics. Commerce, too, has been revolutionized by
this medium; the intermediary is cut out of many sales reducing costs, and sites like eBay have made it
much easier for people to find goods they desire. The key to the success of the Internet is the fact that
everything occurs nearly instantaneously; there are no delays associated with paper work or with
having to deal with consumer service representatives on the phone to verify information. However,
there has been a byproduct of the Internet; people have become impatient more or less and expect
information quicker. After a couple years, e mails were no longer satisfactory. Soon emails were
replaced with instant messengers. However, instant messengers were still limited by a person s ability
to read and type quickly. In order to reduce the length of a message people began using abbreviations,
acronyms, and emoticons. Moreover, sentence structure and grammar are ignored. This new instant
culture along with the writing style of instant messengers has had a profound effect on customs in the
real world. Additionally, since the Internet is not

Amebic Dysentery Research Papers
Amebiasis caused when a single celled parasite called E. histolytica enters the human body when a
person ingests cysts through food or water. It can also enter the body through direct contact with fecal
matter. The cysts are a relatively inactive form of the parasite that can live for several months in the
soil or environment where they were deposited in feces. The microscopic cysts are present in the soil,
fertilizer, or water that s been contaminated with infected feces. Food handlers may transmit the cysts
while preparing or handling food. Transmission is also possible during anal sex or colonic irrigation.
When cysts enter the body, they hunt in the digestive tract. They then release an invasive form of the
parasite called a trophozoite. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only about 10 to 20 percent of
people who have amebiasis become ill from it. Symptoms at this stage tend to be mild and include
loose stools and stomach cramping If the parasite invades the lining of your intestine, it can produce
amebic dysentery. Amebic dysentery is a more dangerous form of the disease with frequent watery
and bloody stools and severe stomach cramping. If the parasite enters your bloodstream, it can end up
in your liver, heart, lungs, brain, or other organs, where it causes tissue destruction and abscess. The
liver is a frequent destination for the parasite. Symptoms of amebic liver disease include fever and
tenderness in the upper right part of your torso Diagnosis A doctor may guess amebiasis after asking
about your recent health and travel history. Your doctor may test you for the presence of E. histolytic.
You may have to give stool samples over several days to screen for the presence of cysts. Your doctor
may order lab tests to check liver function, which can help determine if the ameba has damaged your

I M THE MOST TERRIFIC LIAR you ever saw in your life.
(Holden 19).
This story is told in the first person point of view. The author chose the story to be first person to build
a connection with the reader, and to tell stories from their own perspective, since they are more
reliable than being told by someone else. First person also allows the reader to create a relationship
with the protagonist and get to to know the character by the choices he made and the life experiences
he had.
Foreshadowing
I ll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me last Christmas just before I got pretty

This quote on the first chapter of the book indicates that Holden has some anxiety problems and is
either in an institution to help calm and deal with the nerves, since he mentioned he is a nervous guy,
or in a hospital, after a mental breakdown. The sentence encourages the reader to want to know why

Justice Is One Of The Most Important Moral And Political...
Justice is one of the most important moral and political concepts. The word comes from the Latin jus,
meaning right or law. Since the beginning of time, injustice has been an issue each individual has
experienced during his or her daily lives. Even today we still are experiencing riots and protests from
African American in order to achieve justice. In Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 by Anna Deavere Smith
we see an example of injustice through the Rodney King case and the shooting of Latasha Harlins.
Rodney King and Latasha Harlins experienced racial injustice, which can be defined as the denial of
rights based on an individual s race or racial background. Both two victims were mistreated for the
color of their skin and were stripped from their equal rights and opportunities.
In Los Angeles, California, four Los Angeles police officers had been caught beating an unarmed
African American motorist, Rodney King. Rodney King had severe injuries due to the beating. On
April 23, the King trial jury begins its deliberations, and hours later the verdict was announced and the
officers were found innocent. In the presentation by Dr. Taylor, she stated prosecutors provide
evidence, and the defense provides evidence and the two halves create a whole story (Dr. Taylor). This
is stating that when justice is involved, hearing both stories help put compose the concrete truth of
what transpired and occurred. However, in the Rodney King case, he was stripped from his justice to

The Act Of 2001 ( Usa Patriot Act, Or Usapa )
After the 2001 September 11th attacks on the world trade center the nations homeland security
policies had to be reinforced. The awkwardly titled so as to unite and Strengthening America
Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (USA
PATRIOT Act, or USAPA) presented a plenty of administrative changes which altogether expanded
the reconnaissance and investigative forces of law authorization organizations in the United States.
The Act did not, in any case, accommodate the arrangement of balanced governance that generally
protects common freedoms despite such enactment. Authoritative recommendations in light of the
terrorist assaults of September 11, 2001 were presented not exactly a week after the assaults. President
Bush marked the last bill, the USA PATRIOT Act, into law on October 26, 2001. Despite the fact that
the Act made critical corrections to more than 15 imperative statutes, it was presented with awesome
flurry and went with little verbal confrontation, and without a House, Senate, or meeting report.
Therefore, it needs foundation authoritative history that regularly reflectively gives important statutory
understanding. The Act was a trade off form of the Anti Terrorism Act of 2001 (ATA), an expansive
authoritative bundle planned to fortify the country s protection against terrorism. The ATA contained a
few procurements incomprehensibly growing the power of law authorization and knowledge
organizations to screen private

The Treatment Of Sickle Cell Anemia
Sickle cell anemia is not only about the body s number of red blood cells (or amount of hemoglobin)
fallen below normal, it s also involves splenic sequestration, vision loss, a stroke, deep vein
thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, gallstones, a very rare form of kidney cancer, etc. Many
different complications feed off of sickle cell anemia, if it s not one thing it s another. There is not a
specific treatment for this disease to make it go away, but as I listed above there are ways of helping
with the pain. It is natural to be scared of catching this disease that is not contagious, but the person
who has the disease is the one who needs to be worrying more about staying away from those who do
not have the disease. Sickle cell anemia causes those to have a higher rick for infection. They have to
take precaution with the food they eat, to be sure food was prepared safely. Those are the therapeutic
ways doctors have helped sickle cell patients today, in the past there were different therapeutic
approaches. Sickle cell disease wasn t yet discovered until the early 1900 s. This disease has been well
known in Africa for at least five thousand years and known by many names in many tribal languages.

Diary Of Anne Frank Diary Analysis
The Diary of Anne Frank is story about a young teenage girl that was trying to hide from being
persecuted from the Nazis because of her religion. During that time, survival was the only thing that
was on her mind: How long she and her family were going to last. They hid behind a bookcase that led
to an attic. They stayed there for a while until they were found a couple years later. They were taken
back to a concentration camp. She died shortly after from a disease called typhus. The only thing that
remains is her diary that her father found to preserve her memory and insight to be in the mind of a
teenage girl during the war. The diary has many themes but the main ones are stress, grief, and mental
illness.
Stress was unavoidable during this time of her life. She was born in a wealthy family and worrying
about suitors for potential marriage material. She was worrying if she would be good enough for them
or if they ll be good enough for her father. She went from being young and care free to being young
and terrified. The day that they received the letter to work in the camps was the day that her youth and
innocence died. She didn t worry about her suitors as much after that because at the end of the day, she
could never trust them enough to tell them her secrets and innermost thoughts. She had to confide in a
diary that her father gave her to help cope with what was happening around her. She hardly had any
peace of mind knowing that they couldn t stay hiding for long. She

In this article she wrote about three different ways to view a given situation. Her three economic
paradigms are conservative/ free market, liberal/ imperfectionist, and radical/ exploitation. Free
market economics states that individuals are free, independent, rational choosers who are motivated by
self interest. They believe in a free market and that the government should have no control over it, and
that this will lead to competitive markets and economic growth. Liberals also use a market system;
however, they believe that government intervention is necessary. They think that some people don t
have the resources at their disposal to achieve upward mobility. Liberals believe that they it is
necessary for governments to provide an education to all people so that they have a chance to improve
their living conditions. Gertrude s son is an example of the government not successfully
accomplishing this. In the slums, children are not given the education that they need in order to
succeed later in life. This is one example of how the government in South Africa is not doing what an
imperfectionist would recommend they do. The last of the three economic paradigms is the radical
perspective. Radicals have very firm theories of how workers are exploited by their employers. They
explain minority have low income and status because they have a history of being exploited. They

Project Scope Of A Graduate Curriculum
Problem Statement
Recommendations by the WHO, 2011 and AACN, 2012 have supported implementation of a graduate
curriculum that will educate trainees on quality improvement initiatives that include topics on near
misses, factors surrounding errors and error management in the clinical setting. In the College of
Nursing, nurse anesthesia department, there is no designated educational module addressing this
recommendation.
The concern with not educating trainees before graduation is that incident and near misses tend to
remain underreported because of the perpetuating negative culture surrounding error reporting. This in
turn hinders learning from the event and stifles growth toward voluntary sharing of broken processes
and system failures (Barnsteiner, 2011). The current focus on Quality Improvement is to provide high
reliable care with little to zero risks by including the combined and unceasing efforts of everyone
healthcare professionals, patients and their families, researchers, payers, planners and educators to
make changes that will lead to better patient outcomes (health), better system performance (care) and
better professional development (IHI, 2015).

The Contributions Of James Dewey Watson
James Dewey Watson was born on April 6, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the Horace Mann
Grammar School, South Shore High School. In the summer of 1943, he entered the experimental four
year college program at the University of Chicago. In 1947, he received a B.Sc. degree in zoology. He
subsequently earned a fellowship for a graduate study program at the University of Indiana in
Bloomington. At Indiana he was inspired by geneticists H.J. Muller and T.M. Sonneborn, and
microbiologist S.E. Lucia, under whom Watson completed his thesis regarding the effect of hard X

of the National Research Council during his first postdoctoral year. He worked with biochemist
Herman Kalckar and microbiologist Ole MaalĂže shortly thereafter, and studied bacterial viruses to
analyze the structure of DNA. In the spring of 1951, he traveled with Kalckar to the Zoology Station
at Naples. there he met Maurice Wilkins and for the first time saw the X ray diffraction pattern of
crystalline DNA which prompted his to change the orientation of his research to the structural
chemistry of nucleic and proteins. In October of 1951 he began to work at the Cavendish Laboratory

Although both painters were born in France, they were painting during time periods. Moillon was born

rich colours (Harrison, 2010). Cezanne was born in 1839 in Aix en Providence and was paining in the
Post Impressionism era, which included thick applications of paint and had a more expressive effect
(Harrison, 2010). Both works are created with oil paint, however, Cezanne has chosen to paint his
work on canvas, whereas Moillon s work is displayed on panel. Both works are of similar size,
Cezanne s canvas is 46 x 56cm and Moillon s panel is 46 x 65cm. ... Show more content on

Moillon displays a bowl of Curacao oranges, that originate from the Dutch West Indies, with the
leaves still attached and one single lemon resting on the top (Harrison, 2010). The bowl which the
fruit is in is significant as it was made of porcelain. Porcelain was an expensive import from China
and was often featured in still life painting by French and Dutch artists (Harrison, 2010) which give
the painting a rich and expensive tone. The composition looks formal and posed and the lighting in the
painting is dramatic and creates harsh shadows which gives a more realistic feel. This painting has a
wide tonal range as there are strong contrasts between the lightest and darkest parts which creates a
strong effect. Moillon uses linear brushwork to give a smooth texture to the painting (Inside Art, 2010)
and poses the fruit close to the picture plane which give the impression of being able to reach out and

Is Brutus A Tragic Hero
To be gullible means to live a life of trickery and doubt. An innocent appearance may be treacherous
in disguise, deceiving the trusting eye of the naive. A foolish person opens the pathway only to
betrayal, and eventually death. In William Shakespeare s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus s
tragic flaw of naivety is what steers him to his demise. He is recognized as the tragic hero through his
misreadings, fabricated by Cassius, persuading him to side with the conspirators. Furthermore,
attempting to justify his rationalizations encourage him into murdering Caesar, while both inside and
outside forces influence his actions in the conspiracy. Cassius hatches a plan to fool the honorable yet
naive Brutus into joining the conspirators.

West Caribbean Airways Flight Analysis Essay
In the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, August 16th 2005, West Caribbean Airways Flight 708
was a West Caribbean Airways charter flight which crashed in a mountainous region of northwest
Venezuela. With eight crew members and 152 passengers the McDonnell Douglas MD 80 departed
Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, Panama and headed to Martinique Aimé
CĂ©saire International Airport (FDF) in Fort de France, Martinique, France. After initially climbing to
FL310, and subsequently to FL330 to level off, the Captain of the aircraft noticed the engines sounded
abnormal. Reacting to sounds of the engines, the Captain began to take corrective actions to correct
the problem, by starting a rapid descent as a precaution. The time from the initial radio call from the
first officer declaring engine problems to the subsequent crash took only 9:00 minutes. This research
paper will delve into the chain of mistakes that were made in order for this terrible accident to have
occured.
Background In 1998 the charter service West Caribbean Airways was started in MedellĂn, Columbia
by company founder Hassan Tannir. The organization focused flights primarily in Central America,
part of the mainland of Colombia, and San Andrés in the Caribbean. It operates largely domestic
services, and its main base of operations are out of Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH), MedellĂn. West

The Puritan Religion’s Influence on Children Essay
While the current child considers their life to be stressful and busy, the children of the Puritan religion
had much more to be worried about, on top of all of their daily activities. The adults in the community
looked down upon the children that represented the devil and his works. Children were born with the
burden of Adam s sin, and they must be broken from sinning. By the time that the children were five,
they were put to work, to contribute to the family. Most children were small, and able to help with the
weeding of plants and house work. After an early morning work session, most children would attend
school. Schooling was very important to the Puritans because they believed that the devil would

The constant fear would be held above all s heads and cause the mentally weak, to go insane. Puritans
belief that God was the main controller meant that he would punish anyone who would do anything
that was sinful. They would not help anyone who had fallen sick or had a misfortune, because they
saw it as God s will. God was more powerful than anyone on Earth, and would punish the damn more
than any physical pain could. Children were the most susceptible to sinful nature because they were
seen as promiscuous (Discovery Education). In the Puritan Religion, all children were supposed to be
looked down upon, and hold no power. They were supposed to be closer to the devil than any adult, as
we could see during the Salem Witch Trials. Death by sin was also constant fear in the child s mind,
and the children were so afraid to sin, that they usually ended up sinning. Also, children lived with the
fear of not experiencing God for their memberships to the church. In this time, to be a citizen, you had
to be a member of the church. When the children of the elect were born, they were automatically given
membership to the church, because they were for surely experience God. When some of them did not,
they lived inconstant fear of what was to to come of them and their future children. The constant fears
and pressures of the Puritan child lead to problems within the community (Campbell). With the Bible
as their main focus to their religion and their leader,

Blitzkrieg Significance
World War II started on September 1, 1939 when the German armed forces invaded Poland. The
German forces attained the country of Poland from all different directions, including air forces,
warships, and by land. During this devastating moment for the citizens of Poland, the tactic used was
known as blitzkrieg, or lightning war . According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, blitzkrieg is a term
used to describe a war conducted with great speed and force or ...a violent surprise offensive by
massed air forces and mechanized ground forces in close coordination . The Polish were unable to
defend themselves due to the lack of an under equipped and an unprepared military. The Germans

How Did Mary Anne Change In The Sweetheart Of The Song Tra...
In the chapter, The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong , we meet an interesting character named Mary
Anne. She was a seventeen year old lady who just got out of high school and went to visit her
boyfriend Mark Fossie in Vietnam. It started out as just visiting a childhood sweetheart, except it all
changed in a matter of weeks. Mary Anne began to take too much interest and she became engulfed in
Vietnam. She wasn t all too careful, rather than her swallowing the land, she was swallowed whole by
it. Vietnam changed Mary Anne into something she never thought that she would become, she
changed into a lone soldier, physically, behaviorally and psychologically. The first was Mary Anne

When Mary Anne came to Vietnam, she was described as happy (89), curious (91) along with having a
good sharp mind (93). Mary Anne was just a normal teenage lady just out of high school and the war
intrigued her (91) She enjoyed learning learning everything that the guys taught her. Her curiosity
symbolizes how adventurous she could be, and foreshadows how lost she would become. Her sharp
mind symbolized how ready she was to be in the combat zone and how fast she learned things. Her
downfall of learning everything about how the soldiers live and the land was how empty she became.
She was there, but not completely at all. Shoulders hunched, her blue eyes opaque, she seemed to
disappear inside herself (100) I think that this quote symbolizes the battle that she is facing within
herself, whether she should go back to her own life, or stay in a place that makes her feel brave and
fierce. Vietnam had the effect of a powerful drug: that mix of unnamed terror and unnamed pleasure
(109). Mary Anne went and became addicted to the drug, to the point where she basically didn t have
any rational thinking. Her happiness was gone, her curiosity was empty, she mentally wasn t the same

Fiduciary Acceptance Definition
The fiduciary administration is the responsibility of the trustee for managing the trust property. The
trustee has all of the powers over trust property that a legally competent, unmarried individual has
with respect to individually owned property. But it is the beneficiaries, not the trustee, that bear the
consequences of the trustee s exercise of these powers. Meanwhile, by making a transfer in
testamentary trust rather than outright leave them to their heirs, a settlor ensures that the property will
be managed and distributed in accordance with his wishes which expressed in the terms of the trust
rather than the whims of the beneficiaries. A testamentary trust also allows the settlor to empower the
trustee to decide how the trust property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the view above, beneficiaries may bear high risk for the consequences of intentionally or
negligently improper actions of trustee. So there must be some measures to protect the beneficiaries
from mismanagement or misappropriation by the trustee. In deciding whether and how to exercise the
powers of the trusteeship, the trustee is subject to and must act in accordance with the trustee s
fiduciary duties. The fiduciary duties come from the law of fiduciary administration, whose purpose is
to induce the trustee to adhere to the terms of the trust and to act prudently and in the best interests of
the beneficiaries. Trustees are subject to overarching fiduciary duties of loyalty and prudence. The
fiduciary duties are the highest standard of care, at the same time, trustees have to be subject to a host
of subsidiary duties, such as keeping adequate records and disclosing information about the trust to the
beneficiaries. If trustee breaches the fiduciary duties, he or she may be removed from office, and need
to account for the ill gotten profit. The beneficiaries are entitled to damages, even if they suffered no

The Seagull And Chekhov And Children
The Seagull and Chekhov and Children Anton Chekhov s work The Seagull and Chekhov for Children
were both inspired by the complexity of human emotion. One explored emotion in adults the other
explored it in children to show was there a difference in the way adults and children felt and expressed
emotion.
In a time where the depth of human emotion hadn t been explored too deeply or talked about in
Russian literature, the way Chekhov s The Seagull play explore human emotion and the failures that
haunts these characters was a first for the time. Same goes for Philip Lopate s and his bold choice to
push 5th graders father than what was expected of them, with acting out one of Chekhov s other dark
and humorous play Uncle Vanya. Both pieces are unique stand alone works off art, one thing both
pieces of work had in common was the ability to see beyond what was normal and push through what
society wanted to create unique pieces of work. A key part of Chekhov for children is Chekhov, with
out Chekhov play Uncle Vanya there would be no source of inspiration for director Phillp Lopate to
grab a hold to and push his 5th graders beyond what was expected of them at that age. Philip Lopate
was trying to achieve something daring and innovative so why wouldn t he use work that was said to
be the same at one point in time. Lopate s Chekhov for children thought out side the box and gave his
5th grade students extremely hard task that most said would be impossible to pull off. From that

Leonardo The Artist, By Maria Vittoria Brugnoli And The...
I have currently finished reading the book Leonardo The Artist. The book is made up by three of Da
Vinci s scholars. One part of the book entitled The Painter is by Anna Maria Brizio, the other part is
The Sculptor which is interpreted by Maria Vittoria Brugnoli and the last section is The Teacher by
André Chastel. The book is comprised of Da Vinci s notebooks with sketches and comments on his
work in progress; all of which was rediscovered in 1965. The general purpose for this book is to show
Da Vinci s ideology surrounding art and intellectual findings that contributed to his talent. Leonardo
Da Vinci was more than just a painter. He was also considered a sculptor and a teacher. He found
interest in mathematic, science and nature. This book reveals how boundless Da Vinci s curiosity was.
Da Vinci trained as a painter in the studio of Andrea Verrocchio. He devoted long hours to the study of
nature even on holy days. Da Vinci explored every branch of science known at his time and proved to
many that he was far ahead of his time. This is exemplified in his precise observations and the value
he placed on empirical truth. Da Vinci states, No human investigation can be called true science
without going through mathematical tests... (page 16) This basically refers to the scientific method.
In sketch after sketch, his notebooks cite his preoccupation with architecture both as an artistic
expression and as a technical problem. In his painting of the town plan of

Legal Developments in Western Civilization
Legal Developments in Western Civilization
The span of Western Civilization encompasses many notable achievements in legal development. As
empires rise and expand, it becomes necessary to create a legal code that standardizes punishment,
institutes a form of common law, and protects society from arbitrary abuses of power. These principles
were formally established relatively early in the western world, and became the foundations upon
which later government institutions created their legal systems. The Code of Hammurabi, the Twelve
Tables, and Magna Carta, all represent key moments in the evolution of legal thought and practice.
Not only do they show the legal and political direction of the empires, but also the progression of their
social values The Babylonian empire s success was due in large part to its powerful sixth king,
Hammurabi who reigned from 1792 1750 B.C.E. At the age of twenty five he succeeded to the throne
and devoted the first thirty years of his reign to wars of conquest. His military success meant that his
empire now possessed a diverse population that was difficult to placate. To aid in unifying the empire
and making punishments standard and universal, he issued the Code of Hammurabi. In three hundred
clauses, Hammurabi established the rudiments of common law. Though not a set of statutes to be
cited, it did provide judges with examples of past decisions handed down for various disputes. His
concept of justice was reflected in the biblical

Evaluating The Maximum Tolerated Dose
INTRODUCTION Oncology patients are often severely ill and often resort to aggressive therapies
with the potential of serious toxicity. The primary objective for dose escalation in phase I trials is to
avoid exposing too many patients to subtherapeutic doses while preserving safety and maintaining
rapid accrual through a reliable practical dose finding design [1]. A phase I cancer trial aims to
determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD), defined as the dose for which the probability of
toxicity is closest to a prespecified target toxicity rate p_T (the toxicity probability of the true MTD).
Dose limiting toxicity (DLT) is a side effect of treatments that are serious enough to prevent an
increase in dose. In other words, MTD is the highest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prior studies have reviewed a vast literatures on dose escalation methods for Phase I trials in cancer,
yet very few of them have been used in practice [3]. However, few statistical studies have matched
sample sizes across the designs [4]. The purpose of this proposal is to evaluate three dose escalation
designs which are optimal for determining the closest dose to the actual MTD while exposing the least
amount of patients to either ineffective with roughly match sample sizes and similar target toxicity
probabilities p_T. This proposal includes three specific aims and two hypothesis. Specific Aim 1:
Introduce a new dose finding design hybrid (3+1) that can be easily understood and implemented by
non statisticians. By combining the rule based embedded in the 3+3 method with the model based
embedded in mTPI. Hypothesis: The operating characteristics of the proposed design hybrid (3+1) is
better than those of two other designs, the 3+3, and mTPI. Specific Aim 2: Conduct a comprehensive
simulation experiment to detect the true MTD for different toxicity scenarios. Specific Aim 3:
Evaluate these three designs by comparing the MTD on a practical application Samarium in Pediatric
Osteosarcoma (SPO) trial. SIGNIFICANCE AND RELEVANCE TO PUBLIC HEALTH Dose finding
designs in cancer clinical trials are a broad class of clinical experiments to determine an optimal
(MTD) of drug for cancer related treatment or prevention. By applying these designs to SPO trial we

made them have strong power over other civilizations. The Hebrews saw God as creator and believed
that God is in control of His creation. I will demonstrate the argument by comparison of these three

Drug Trafficking Papers
Drug Trafficking
Drug trafficking is the production of drugs done illegally that violate the drug prohibition laws.
Throughout the years, drug trafficking has been progressing and expanding to the point to where it is
now worldwide. Organizations involved in drug trafficking have been improving their networks,
constantly upgrading their transportation and equipment, having new methods to transport the drugs
and communication throughout the system, and finding information on their employees to use against
them which makes it harder for law enforcement to keep up and take action to reduce the problem of
drug trafficking.
The illegal transportation of drugs started to become serious whenever the Medellin Cartel began to
dominate the cocaine business. The Medellin Cartel was ran by the Ochoa Vazquez brothers Jorge
Luis, Juan David, and Fabio; Pablo Escobar, Carlos Lehder, George Jung, and Jose Gonzalo
Rodriguez Gacha. In 1975, the Colombian police found 600 kilos of cocaine stashed in a plane. Drug
traffickers responded to the police by killing 40 people in one weekend which is known as the
Medellin Massacre. The massacre led to the uprising of various killings, assassinations, kidnappings,
and the discovery of a hit list that contained U.S. businessmen, embassy members, and their families.
It was then when violence was beginning to grow in Miami and drug traffickers were involved, that

The Marketing Of The Beer Industry
The U.S. beer industry is a highly concentrated industry since two large firms (Anheuser Busch InBev
and MillerCoors) occupy a significant market share. As the craft beer industry experiences an
explosive growth, the competition becomes fierce. As the largest craft brewery and the seventh largest
brewery in the United States, the Boston Beer Company is facing growing competitive threats from
larger breweries and premium imported beer companies, including Anheuser Busch InBev,
MillerCoors, Heineken, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium Brewing, and Crown Imports. More than that, it
has to face the competitive challenges from the small breweries, which are growing rapidly and want
to surpass the Boston Beer Company. Samuel Adams produced by the Boston Beer Company is one of
the most popular craft beer because it has won more awards in the beer tasting competitions than any
other brewery in the world since 2000 (Dess et al. C129). As the competition within the craft beer
industry, the Boston Beer Company has to figure out a way to maintain growth, increase customer
awareness, and continue to brew flavorful beers that customers enjoy.
Porter s Five Forces on the general Beer Industry
Industry rivalry is considered high because of the acquisition, the decline of the beer consumption, and
the rise of the craft brewing sector. Competition among the beer companies in the industry is based on
brand and quality. In recent years, the industry has also consolidated quite notably with the top two

Reflection On Philosophy Of Engineering
Through the course of the past few weeks I ve come to believe that by engaging the methods of the

greater opportunity and collaboration in innovation. In a rapidly Globalizing and interconnected
world, Collaborative Innovation across borders and disciplines has become the driving force behind

  • 2. Character Analysis Of Pecola Breedlove Pecola Breedlove is a young girl growing up black and poor in the early 1940s. She is repeatedly called ugly by nearly everyone in her life, from the mean kids at school to her own mother. This constant criticism, the relentless bullying she gets at school, and her rough family life (her parents are always fighting, both verbally and physically) lead Pecola to seek escape from her misery by fantasizing about becoming more beautiful. Pecola begins to believe that if she could just achieve physical beauty, her life would automatically improve. This false belief turns out to be utterly destructive to Pecola, consuming her whole life and, eventually, her sanity. Pecola is a young African American girl, born to Cholly and Pauline Breedlove. She has a brother and her family lives in a small house on the edge of town. Pecola s father was an alcoholic and he abused his wife and Pecola, both physically and sexually. Pecola is not beautiful and she wishes for nothing more than blond hair and blue eyes. She prays everyday to God to make her beautiful. The character s inner struggle is self confidence because she believes she is ugly. Pecola is quiet, shy, and introverted due to her low self esteem level. There s something that I am not in accordance with Pecola and that is that she lets the negativity from other people get to her. The idea of her thinking that she is ugly creates results from her isolation from friends, the community, and even her family. There are three stages ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Spiritual Journey In Critically Acclaimed Memoir Gay Catholic Shares His Spiritual Journey in Critically Acclaimed Memoir The author, a long time DignityUSA member, holds on to his Catholicism while affirming his homosexuality. Joseph Gentilini cannot openly express his homosexuality when growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when it was still considered a mental disorder. When society became more accepting of LGBT persons, he wasted no time in expressing his true self, which brought him into a conflictual relationship with his parents and his Catholic faith. Gentilini opens up about his spiritual journey in his memoir Hounded By God: A Gay Man s Journey to Self Acceptance, Love, and Relationship (Dog Ear Publishing, 2013). Due to the attitudes of the past, Gentilini turned to journaling to express his inner thoughts and feelings, which helped him to deepen his relationship with God and build self esteem. The book highlights his coming out experiences, his relationship with his parents, his commitment to his partner, and most importantly, his spirituality. Hounded By God refers to Gentilini being hounded by God for resisting His loving presence in his life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The church officials condemnation of homosexuality and LGBT persons increased his resolve to leave the Church (February 7, 1978); his anger brought him to the point of hatred towards God and religion (February 24, 1978 entry). • 4. Little Brother Succeeds By Cory Doctorow In all mediums of storytelling, storylines never follow a singular plots. Writers often attempt to shovel in various subplots as a means of trying to captivate audiences who are not as interested by the main story. These subplots often revolve around the main story in the sense that they coexist but do not affect it. This entirely ruins the purpose of including subplots, as they should intertwine with and almost become a part of the main plotline. This is where Cory Doctorow s novel Little Brother succeeds. Throughout the novel, Doctorow focuses mainly on the story of Marcus Yallow, a high schooler living in San Francisco with gifted abilities in hacking, and his friends as he fights the manipulative government branch: The Department of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He writes Ange and Marcus characters so that together, they have a natural chemistry together in both dialogue and actions. At one point, near the middle of the novel, Marcus and Ange go out on date to one of Ange s favorite restaurants. The two decide to go to a burrito place. While there, Ange pulls out a stainless steel canister and excessively sprays her burrito with it s contents. Marcus asks her what she sprays her burrito with, to which she informs him that This is like pepper spray but slightly more dilute. And way more delicious. Think of it as Spicy Cajun Visine if it helps (68). There is no other passage in the novel that can exhibit Marcus and Ange s almost comedic chemistry together so perfectly. Ange is, by heart, more of an eccentric. She enjoys going out of her way so that she may eat spicy foods. She has an excessively liberal sense of mind and lives life how she sees fit. On the other hand, Marcus has a much more conservative mentalities despite literally fighting against the government. He openly voices his disgust to his date in a way that lets Ange know he feels appalled, but still still likes her by asking What the hell are you doing to that poor, defenseless burrito? (68). The two are an unlikely pair that is both entertaining and relatable to readers. The sincerity of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. An Theoretical School District, School, And A Classroom In this paper I am going to present an theoretical school district, school, and a classroom as examples of the ideal that our educational system should strive to achieve. The philosophy my schools will be based on is one of equality. Every single child will have an opportunity to receive the best possible education. However, we will never lower our standards for the sake of equality. Each child will be pushed to his or her personal best, not an average standard. Before talking about what goes on inside the schools, I d like to mention the district itself. There will be no alternative school choices, bussing, or deliberate desegregation practices. Each school will be remarkably similar to the others in the district so that every child may receive a similar education regardless of the neighborhood they live in. When students are separated to different schools for any reason (academic talent, wealth, interests, race, gender) they fail to interact with different types of people that they will undoubtedly encounter in the real adult world. In addition, I feel that is very important for children from the same neighborhood to attend the same school in order to increase a sense of community. Finally, as the Case Study of Boulder Valley points out, school choice takes valuable resources away from teaching and places them in school competition (Howe 144). Within a typical high school, there will be many different kinds of students. Likewise, there will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Greek Influence On Minoan Society Ancient Greece has influenced us today in so many ways. The first Greek people were the Minoans. Their success was based on trade, instead of conquest. They set up trade outpost throughout the Aegean world. They got new ideas about fields such as writing and architecture from Egypt and Mesopotamia. They used these ideas and adapted them into their own culture. We learned a lot about the Greek s from their frescoes, which are colorful paintings completed on wet plaster. They often depicted Minoan society, and they told us that they valued the sea and they worshipped a bull as well as a mother goddess. In about 1400 B.C., Minoan civilization disappeared, and the Mycenaeans replaced them. The Mycenaeans were the first Greek speaking people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They developed their own unique ways, at the same time. Specifically, Greeks developed news ideas on governing each individual Greek polis. A polis is a city state. The earliest civilizations began around fertile river valleys. Strong rulers organized ways or irrigation that helped produce surpluses of food that were needed by large cities. By 750 B.C., a rapid population growth forced many Greeks to leave the overcrowded valleys. Because fertile land was limited, the Greeks expanded overseas. The gradual scattering of Greek colonies took place all around the Mediterranean from Spain to Egypt. They carried their ideas and cultures to all the places they traveled. Greek civilizations had several different types of government. A monarchy is a government system where a hereditary ruler exercises a central power. Slowly the power shifted to a class of noble landowners. They could only afford bronze weapons and chariots, so they were also military defenders of the city states. An aristocracy is the rule by a hereditary landholding elite. As trade expanded, a new middle class emerged in some cities. This class consisted of wealthy merchants, farmers, and artisans. They challenged landowning nobles and then dominated some city states. The result of this was a form of government called an oligarchy. Power is in the hands of a small, wealthy elite. He has connected the first Japan snacks supplier in HKTDC Food Expo in 2011 by himself.5 In Japan, local products for domestic sales are not allowed to be sold to foreign companies. Thus, Lam even went to Japan in person searching for suppliers and set up shadow companies in Japan sourcing for any popular and fair price snacks that are not yet known to the Hong Kong market.6 That is the reason snacks sold in 759 Store always catch up with the trend in Japan. Thus, 759 Store provides exclusive products which cannot be found in its competitors stores. • 8. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Essays Mr. Smith is portrayed as an honest man with strong opinions. He is the ideal politician in an ideal society. The film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington depicts a reassuring image that happens to be an image of the past (Wheeler). However, in today s legislature, people like Mr. Smith are rare due to the fact that a politician s primary goal is re election. The good of the people may come as another intention of a politician, but it is always secondary to bringing home the pork. There should be more people like Mr. Smith because the legislature would be able to make decisions more effectively and efficiently, rather than how slowly they currently operate. This is an unfortunate truth, yet it is how our society has been shaped to operate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taylor, a special interest group member, controlled everything Senator Paine did until he finally decided to change. This denotes the impact that wealth can have in the government. The system is designed so that things such as pork barreling can pass and sometimes need to pass in order for a law to go through. This creates a system of lies and corruption, with members of the Senate not looking out for the national good. Senators are forced to focus on improving their own district because it is all they can do to ensure re election. The most successful Senators do this because it gains short term approval from their district and gets them a future vote. This is a method of maintaining their career, and is something they are in some cases forced to do. If someone like Mr. Smith came in and was consistently free of corruption, people would vote for him based on his truthfulness. The legislature s set up allows for corruption to exist in the government. The government shutdown of 2013 ended after a deal was reached in the U.S. Senate that included a provision that raised the spending cap on a dam construction project in Kentucky (Hudak). In this case, 2.2 billion dollars were set aside for this project (Almasy). CNN s article stated: So much for a clean bill (Almasy). Rabbit Proof Fence is a great film based on the real tale and experiences of three young Aboriginal girls, Molly, Gracie and Daisy, who were taken against their will from their families in Jigalong, Western Australia in 1931. In the next scene, Mr Neville authorises the removal of the girls from Jigalong. There is a low angle shot of Neville and there is low key lighting which makes Mr Neville looks saintly yet sinister. He seems efficient and cold hearted. The scene then switches back to Jigalong. Riggs arrives in a car which is odd to the girls, who may have never seen a car, are then taken by Riggs. There is a build up of dramatic irony as Riggs approached the girls. The women realise Riggs is there to take the girls to Moore River and begin to run. Riggs captures the girls and shuts them inside the car. The women then beat the glass of the car with their hands, even though they can?t connect through the glass. This evokes fear and sorrow in the audience. The girls then go on a train to reach Moore River. They are in a cage and there are bars on the window, it seems like a prison. They seem disoriented and traumatized from there facial expressions. The girls then arrive at Moore River. At Moore River, there is an inspection. Mr ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Internet and Cultural and Historical Diversity of Style in Composition The technological revolution of the late twentieth century has arguably caused some of the greatest changes in the global society. Few realize the full effects of the computer age. The Internet in particular has brought the corners of the world closer together. Even in the most remote areas of the globe, such as Katmandu, one can see an advertisement for e mail (Stefik 235). One might begin to wonder what the social consequences of this pervasiveness are. The Internet is arguably the greatest breakthrough in information technology ever; it allows for instant communication between people situated on other sides of the world. Furthermore, it allows for access to virtually limitless information on a plethora of topics. Commerce, too, has been revolutionized by this medium; the intermediary is cut out of many sales reducing costs, and sites like eBay have made it much easier for people to find goods they desire. The key to the success of the Internet is the fact that everything occurs nearly instantaneously; there are no delays associated with paper work or with having to deal with consumer service representatives on the phone to verify information. However, there has been a byproduct of the Internet; people have become impatient more or less and expect information quicker. After a couple years, e mails were no longer satisfactory. Soon emails were replaced with instant messengers. However, instant messengers were still limited by a person s ability to read and type quickly. In order to reduce the length of a message people began using abbreviations, acronyms, and emoticons. Moreover, sentence structure and grammar are ignored. This new instant culture along with the writing style of instant messengers has had a profound effect on customs in the real world. Additionally, since the Internet is not ... It can also enter the body through direct contact with fecal matter. The cysts are a relatively inactive form of the parasite that can live for several months in the soil or environment where they were deposited in feces. The microscopic cysts are present in the soil, fertilizer, or water that s been contaminated with infected feces. Food handlers may transmit the cysts while preparing or handling food. Transmission is also possible during anal sex or colonic irrigation. When cysts enter the body, they hunt in the digestive tract. Salinger Literary Element Quote Analysis Point of View I M THE MOST TERRIFIC LIAR you ever saw in your life. (Holden 19). This story is told in the first person point of view. The author chose the story to be first person to build a connection with the reader, and to tell stories from their own perspective, since they are more reliable than being told by someone else. First person also allows the reader to create a relationship with the protagonist and get to to know the character by the choices he made and the life experiences he had. Foreshadowing I ll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me last Christmas just before I got pretty rundown and had to come here and take it easy. (Holden 3). This quote on the first chapter of the book indicates that Holden has some anxiety problems and is either in an institution to help calm and deal with the nerves, since he mentioned he is a nervous guy, or in a hospital, after a mental breakdown. The sentence encourages the reader to want to know why and how he has to calm down, and what events lead to this major madman occurrences. Tone After I shut the door and started back to the living room, he yelled something at me, but I couldn t exactly hear him. I m pretty sure he yelled Good luck! at me. I hope not. I hope to hell not. Since the beginning of time, injustice has been an issue each individual has experienced during his or her daily lives. Even today we still are experiencing riots and protests from African American in order to achieve justice. In Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 by Anna Deavere Smith we see an example of injustice through the Rodney King case and the shooting of Latasha Harlins. Rodney King and Latasha Harlins experienced racial injustice, which can be defined as the denial of rights based on an individual s race or racial background. Both two victims were mistreated for the color of their skin and were stripped from their equal rights and opportunities. In Los Angeles, California, four Los Angeles police officers had been caught beating an unarmed African American motorist, Rodney King. Rodney King had severe injuries due to the beating. On April 23, the King trial jury begins its deliberations, and hours later the verdict was announced and the officers were found innocent. In the presentation by Dr. Taylor, she stated prosecutors provide evidence, and the defense provides evidence and the two halves create a whole story (Dr. Taylor). She went from being young and care free to being young and terrified. The day that they received the letter to work in the camps was the day that her youth and innocence died. She didn t worry about her suitors as much after that because at the end of the day, she could never trust them enough to tell them her secrets and innermost thoughts. They believe in a free market and that the government should have no control over it, and that this will lead to competitive markets and economic growth. Liberals also use a market system; however, they believe that government intervention is necessary. They think that some people don t have the resources at their disposal to achieve upward mobility. Project Scope Of A Graduate Curriculum Problem Statement Recommendations by the WHO, 2011 and AACN, 2012 have supported implementation of a graduate curriculum that will educate trainees on quality improvement initiatives that include topics on near misses, factors surrounding errors and error management in the clinical setting. In the College of Nursing, nurse anesthesia department, there is no designated educational module addressing this recommendation. The concern with not educating trainees before graduation is that incident and near misses tend to remain underreported because of the perpetuating negative culture surrounding error reporting. The current focus on Quality Improvement is to provide high reliable care with little to zero risks by including the combined and unceasing efforts of everyone healthcare professionals, patients and their families, researchers, payers, planners and educators to make changes that will lead to better patient outcomes (health), better system performance (care) and better professional development (IHI, 2015). By the time that the children were five, they were put to work, to contribute to the family. Most children were small, and able to help with the weeding of plants and house work. • 32. Legal Developments in Western Civilization Legal Developments in Western Civilization The span of Western Civilization encompasses many notable achievements in legal development. As empires rise and expand, it becomes necessary to create a legal code that standardizes punishment, institutes a form of common law, and protects society from arbitrary abuses of power. These principles were formally established relatively early in the western world, and became the foundations upon which later government institutions created their legal systems. The Code of Hammurabi, the Twelve Tables, and Magna Carta, all represent key moments in the evolution of legal thought and practice. Not only do they show the legal and political direction of the empires, but also the progression of their social values The Babylonian empire s success was due in large part to its powerful sixth king, Hammurabi who reigned from 1792 1750 B.C.E. At the age of twenty five he succeeded to the throne and devoted the first thirty years of his reign to wars of conquest. His military success meant that his empire now possessed a diverse population that was difficult to placate. To aid in unifying the empire and making punishments standard and universal, he issued the Code of Hammurabi. In three hundred clauses, Hammurabi established the rudiments of common law. Though not a set of statutes to be cited, it did provide judges with examples of past decisions handed down for various disputes. His concept of justice was reflected in the biblical ... • 33. Evaluating The Maximum Tolerated Dose INTRODUCTION Oncology patients are often severely ill and often resort to aggressive therapies with the potential of serious toxicity. The primary objective for dose escalation in phase I trials is to avoid exposing too many patients to subtherapeutic doses while preserving safety and maintaining rapid accrual through a reliable practical dose finding design [1]. A phase I cancer trial aims to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD), defined as the dose for which the probability of toxicity is closest to a prespecified target toxicity rate p_T (the toxicity probability of the true MTD). Dose limiting toxicity (DLT) is a side effect of treatments that are serious enough to prevent an increase in dose. In other words, MTD is the highest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prior studies have reviewed a vast literatures on dose escalation methods for Phase I trials in cancer, yet very few of them have been used in practice [3]. However, few statistical studies have matched sample sizes across the designs [4]. The purpose of this proposal is to evaluate three dose escalation designs which are optimal for determining the closest dose to the actual MTD while exposing the least amount of patients to either ineffective with roughly match sample sizes and similar target toxicity probabilities p_T. This proposal includes three specific aims and two hypothesis. Specific Aim 1: Introduce a new dose finding design hybrid (3+1) that can be easily understood and implemented by non statisticians. By combining the rule based embedded in the 3+3 method with the model based embedded in mTPI. Hypothesis: The operating characteristics of the proposed design hybrid (3+1) is better than those of two other designs, the 3+3, and mTPI. Specific Aim 2: Conduct a comprehensive simulation experiment to detect the true MTD for different toxicity scenarios. Specific Aim 3: Evaluate these three designs by comparing the MTD on a practical application Samarium in Pediatric Osteosarcoma (SPO) trial. SIGNIFICANCE AND RELEVANCE TO PUBLIC HEALTH Dose finding designs in cancer clinical trials are a broad class of clinical experiments to determine an optimal (MTD) of drug for cancer related treatment or prevention. By applying these designs to SPO trial we can detect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. How Did The Hebrew Civilization Influence Western... When considering the greatest impact on Western Civilization, whether the Hebrew civilization had most to contribution. Even though the Sumerians and Egyptians civilization also contributed greatly to the development of Western Civilization, the Hebrew civilization had a unique characteristic which made them have strong power over other civilizations. The Hebrews saw God as creator and believed that God is in control of His creation. I will demonstrate the argument by comparison of these three civilizations. For the Sumerians, they firstly invented the wheel as useful tool. Not only that, they are the first who discovered the movements of planets. Also, the Egyptians abided near the Nile River had such an important contribution to the advance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Drug Trafficking Papers Drug Trafficking Drug trafficking is the production of drugs done illegally that violate the drug prohibition laws. Throughout the years, drug trafficking has been progressing and expanding to the point to where it is now worldwide. Organizations involved in drug trafficking have been improving their networks, constantly upgrading their transportation and equipment, having new methods to transport the drugs and communication throughout the system, and finding information on their employees to use against them which makes it harder for law enforcement to keep up and take action to reduce the problem of drug trafficking. The illegal transportation of drugs started to become serious whenever the Medellin Cartel began to dominate the cocaine business. The Medellin Cartel was ran by the Ochoa Vazquez brothers Jorge Luis, Juan David, and Fabio; Pablo Escobar, Carlos Lehder, George Jung, and Jose Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha. In 1975, the Colombian police found 600 kilos of cocaine stashed in a plane. Drug traffickers responded to the police by killing 40 people in one weekend which is known as the Medellin Massacre. The massacre led to the uprising of various killings, assassinations, kidnappings, and the discovery of a hit list that contained U.S. businessmen, embassy members, and their families. It was then when violence was beginning to grow in Miami and drug traffickers were involved, that the Vice President of the United States, George H.W. Bush, and government officials ... • 36. The Marketing Of The Beer Industry The U.S. beer industry is a highly concentrated industry since two large firms (Anheuser Busch InBev and MillerCoors) occupy a significant market share. As the craft beer industry experiences an explosive growth, the competition becomes fierce. As the largest craft brewery and the seventh largest brewery in the United States, the Boston Beer Company is facing growing competitive threats from larger breweries and premium imported beer companies, including Anheuser Busch InBev, MillerCoors, Heineken, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium Brewing, and Crown Imports. More than that, it has to face the competitive challenges from the small breweries, which are growing rapidly and want to surpass the Boston Beer Company. Samuel Adams produced by the Boston Beer Company is one of the most popular craft beer because it has won more awards in the beer tasting competitions than any other brewery in the world since 2000 (Dess et al. C129). As the competition within the craft beer industry, the Boston Beer Company has to figure out a way to maintain growth, increase customer awareness, and continue to brew flavorful beers that customers enjoy. Porter s Five Forces on the general Beer Industry Industry rivalry is considered high because of the acquisition, the decline of the beer consumption, and the rise of the craft brewing sector. Competition among the beer companies in the industry is based on brand and quality. In recent years, the industry has also consolidated quite notably with the top two ... • 37. Reflection On Philosophy Of Engineering Through the course of the past few weeks I ve come to believe that by engaging the methods of the philosopher, we can diversify and enrich our understanding about what it is to practice engineering, and by applying these new dimensions to existing knowledge and practices we can open doors for greater opportunity and collaboration in innovation. In a rapidly Globalizing and interconnected world, Collaborative Innovation across borders and disciplines has become the driving force behind change and progress especially in the Indian context. The biggest learning from this course, as an Engineer, has been introduction to, and appreciation of, Philosophy s applicability to engineering, which can be understood when engineering is seen as ... Apart from this, a widening of personal horizons and a greater awareness of one s own native systems of thought and logic. Although, engineering has been around in its modern usage for roughly 150 years, philosophy of engineering is relatively unheard of, closer bonds between engineering and philosophy are irrefutable and absolutely essential to approach engineering for what it really is and give it the status it deserves.
