Throughout the book Stephen s relationship with his parents is described as complicated and
complex. At the beginning of the story, Stephen starts to get frustrated with his parents after
having to move multiple times due to not being able to pay the bills. During one of Stephen s
school changes, it is stated that he had felt the slight changes in his house; and these changes in
what he had deemed unchangeable were so many slight shocks to his boyish conception of the
world (74). This proves that these constant changes not only in houses, but also in schools,
affected Stephen s childhood. These instinaces made Stephen s relationship with his parent s
complicated, as he was two young to fully understand what was going on. Since Stephen did not
fully get along with his parents, it allowed him to use school as his way of escaping them. Being
able to get away at school then allowed Stephen to develop his own beliefs and opinions about
religion, politics, and the world. When Stephen returns home from school, his parents test him
again, with his dad calling him a lazy bitch and his mom telling him he will rue the day (179). If
Stephen would not have had a complicated and difficult relationship with his parents, then he would
