Voice over: In this presentation you will learn about streaming video, a technology that allows you to watch video content over the internet without downloading it first to your TV. You will learn how streaming video works and what it requires. Finally, we’ll cover its benefits and challenges.
- Voice over: So, what is Streaming video exactly? As you know, with your regular old TV growing up, you needed an antenna on your TV and a TV tower to get the Video signal. With Streaming Video, you need a smart TV or a Wi-Fi enabled TV and the internet, usually from a WIFI router in your home to get the video signal. And with Streaming Video you can watch what you want when you want. Anytime of the day you can choose any movie or TV show to watch. So, what is Streaming Video exactly? As you know, with your regular old TV growing up, you needed an antenna on your TV and a TV tower to get the Video signal. - Voice Over: What is the internet or Wi-Fi? I’m glad you asked! The Internet is like a giant network of telephone lines that connects different devices like smart TVs, phones, and computers around the world. WIFI just means the internet without wires. When you stream video, you are basically making a phone call to another device that has the video content you want to watch. The device that has the video content is called a server. There are lots of servers around the world that SERVE you video. All these servers together are sometimes called simply “the CLOUD.” The server in the CLOUD and your TV communicates with each other. They then decide how to break the video into small pieces called packets, then the Smart TV puts them back together to form the video.
- Voice Over: What are the Benefits and Challenges? Streaming video has many benefits, such as convenience. You can watch video content anytime, anywhere, and on any device. You can choose from a wide range of video content, genres, and languages. You can pause, rewind, fast-forward, and skip video content as you wish. You can save money by paying only for what you watch. Streaming video also has some challenges, such as quality issues when your internet may be running slow or there is an outage. Also, you may have to subscribe and pay several streaming services to get all the shows you want. Finally, it may be a challenge to remember how to get to each streaming service and navigate it to find what you want. You will need to practice.
- Voice Over: So, what have we learned In this presentation? We have explored streaming video and learned how it works. We talked about how streaming video differs from traditional video. It uses smart TVs and devices that can access the internet to call up a video and have it sent to you in little pieces, so it could start right way. Finally, we learned about the benefits and challenges of streaming video. It’s very convenient to not have to wait for it to download or need to purchase a physical copy at the store. But it does take a little practice to learn the new way of doing things. Congratulations, you now are ready to start practicing what you have learned. Your homework assignment is to stream a movie and eat a big bucket of popcorn!
