Should The Minimum Age Be Raised To 18
For many teenagers in the United States their 16th birthday is an important milestone. This is
the age that teenagers begin to integrate more into society as they begin to drive and experience
new levels of freedom. As 16 is the usual minimum age for employment in most industries some
teens even get jobs for personal reason or to benefit their household. The minimum age to acquire
a driver s licence should not increase to 18 as younger teens will not be able to help provide for
their families with current public transportation methods in the United States. According to the
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the first drivers license dates back to 1899 with a license
being issued for a steam propelled vehicle in Chicago, Illinois. Over the next five years various
states began introducing laws on driving, specifically the minimum age, to ensure public safety.
While some states like Massachusetts and Missouri were quick to enact these laws, others were
not. South Dakota took over 50 years to enact a minimum driving age in the state. As states, one
by one, began drafting these public safety laws, the age required to obtain a license varied from 14
18 years old.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many teens in the US are employed part time while also attending high school. Having a license
enables these teens to get to and from work, job interviews, or even in some cases become
employed in the delivery business. USA Today reports that while 30% of teens have jobs,
employment rate is still falling. Increasing the driving age would only decrease the number of
teens in the workforce. Surprisingly one third of those teens working, do so to support their family.
Without proper transportation these teens would be forced to either miss more school or work less
in order to make ends meet while still

Indiana Jones Summary
What surprised me most about this documentary was that as a child I had just assumed that the
sporadic and fantastical adventures of Indiana Jones were fiction in their entirety. I never would
have been able to guess that many parts of his adventures mirrored the lives of real life
archeologists. What was most interesting about learning about the way Indiana Jones and modern
day archeologists share some of the same adventures was the way they spoke about it so
practically. The endless insects, the illnesses, the natives and rivalries, it was all like hearing this
grand adventure become real life. It was fascinating having this idea of archeology being a
somewhat mild and monotonous career flipped around to realize that archeology is really

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Essay
You get the phone call in the middle of the night. Your son or daughter has been in a serious
accident and is hospitalized in critical condition. After several day s they come home from the
hospital with several broken bones and require your around the clock attention for the next eight to
twelve weeks. You just got over a seriousmedicalcondition yourself which you acquired while on
vacation and do not have any vacation time or sick time to take off. Do you have to quit your job?
Can your employerterminate you for taking time off to be with your child? What options do you
have? What can your employer do for you? Well, the answer lies in the Family and Medical Leave
Act.

The FMLA benefits the employer by allowing him or her to excuse his employees for medical
conditions or family issues. This benefits both the employer and employee in allowing them to both
know that their can be a balance between the workplace and family life. (dol.gov)
Some of the disadvantages that the employer faces are not being able to predict when employees
will be taking FMLA leave, causing them to make last minute changes to work schedules and the
understanding of what is considered to be a serious illness. A recent survey reported by Ioma, a
leading business management organization, states that the Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM) found that 68% of organizations have experienced challenges in
administering medical leave under the FMLA. These challenges include:
Tracking intermittent leave (51%)
Costs associated with lost productivity due to employees absences (40%)
Unsure about the legitimacy of leave requests (36%)
Morale problems among employees asked to cover for absent employees (33%)
DOL regulations and guidance is contradictory and confusing (27%) (ioma. Payroll report)

An Older Brother s Influence in James Baldwin’s Sonny’s
Blues
In James Baldwin s Sonny s Blues, the unspoken brotherly bond between the narrator and his
younger brother Sonny is illustrated through the narrator s point of view. The two brothers have not
spoken in years until the narrator receives a letter from Sonny after his daughter dies. He takes this
moment as an important sign from Sonny and feels the needto respond. While both Sonny and the
narrator live in separate worlds, all Sonny needs is a brother to care for him while the narrator
finds himself in the past eventually learning his role as an older brother. When the narrator and
Sonny finally get a chance to speak to each other after many years, they begin to slowly open up to
each other the grim reality that they face. I said:... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He knows his brother has as problem with drug addiction, but he does not want to see him give up
without a fight. He cares about his brother, which is what Sonny has needed all this time; an
older brother to tell him that he should not give up, that he should make smart decisions and
make something of himself. The narrator is trying to make up for all the time apart that he has
spent from Sonny during his time of need, and perhaps that is his way of making himself feel
better about abandoning his younger brother so many years before. Sonny has had a problem
with drugs for some time, which leads him having to serve a jail sentence. The narrator tries to
stay oblivious, which is part of the reason he turned his back on his younger brother for so many
years. I couldn t believe it: but what I mean by that is that I couldn t find any room for it
anywhere inside of me. I had kept it outside me for a long time. I hadn t wanted to know. I had
had suspicions, but I didn t name them, I kept putting them away (831). The way that he dealt
with his younger brother s problems was by turning his back on them. He knew that Sonny was
dealing with heavy problems, but chose to look past them and live his own life. He also knows
that leaving his brother during the time he needed him the most was wrong of him to do. The
narrator goes on to say, I didn t want to believe that I d ever see my brother

Tutoring Children In High School
Over the course of second semester junior year, I was given the opportunity of tutoring children
at a school a few blocks from my high school. As my classmates and I walked the 3 blocks down
the street towards the old brick school, my apprehension grew. My only experience with small
children at the time was babysitting family friends children while they were at dinner parties.
What if the kids were boisterous and uncontrollable? Would I be able to reach the children or
would I fail and not teach them anything? Luckily, my anxiety disappeared as soon as I walked
into the second grade classroom and was greeted by twenty excited, smiling seven year olds. I was
grouped with three amazing kids: Demaria, Wynn, and Malik. Wynn was very studious and

What is COBRA Insurance?
COBRA medicinal insurance, short for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act was
passed by Congress in 1986, to verify that individuals would not abruptly lose insurance on the off

imperative to individuals with previous health conditions on the grounds that it offers them constant

Essay on Shifting Efficiency
Shifting Efficiency
One of the most important and life altering inventions in history is the creation of the automobile.
The first model was built with a manual transmission, meaning the operator of the vehicle was
responsible for manually changing gears to increase speed. This method of acceleration, while
efficient, required the complete attention of the operator, and it sometimes took away the enjoyment
of driving. This led to the invention of the automatic transmission, a method by which the operator
of the vehicle no longer had to switch gears, as this was done automatically. Since the development
of the automatic transmission, there has always been conflict about which method of acceleration
is more efficient.
Driving a vehicle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When using a standard, learning how to create the equilibrium of letting one foot off the clutch and
pressing the other on the gas pedal in first gear could take a while to master. An automatic car,
with the process of driving in first gear taken care of magically to most people, is much simpler
and less time consuming to learn. All a person has to do is put the gear shift in drive and press on
the gas pedal.
The final question of efficiency lies within the problem of figuring out which type of transmission
is better when racing. In this area, the manual transmission becomes the popular choice, compared
to the automatic. An automatic does not give the driver the freedom to shift gears when desired, as
this is sometimes necessary when shift variation is a key element to winning a race. The manual
transmission allows the driver to choose when it is necessary to shift gears, sometimes giving the
racer an edge over someone who is racing with an automatic car. Even though an automatic
transmission takes the work out of driving something most people are thankful for, given that some
could never handle the task of shifting manually, the standard has its own advantages also.
The decision about which transmission is more efficient may never be reached, given the
advantages and disadvantages of each. It really depends on the person who buys the car and what
it will be

Juvenile Crime Statistics Paper
This paper will address and summarize four different points from the juvenile arrests bulletin from
2001. Such points included in the summary are the overall decrease in juvenile arrests, the increase
in drug offenses and simple assaults, implications for juvenile females and minorities, and last an
assessment of the tracking of juvenile arrests as a method of measuring the amount of and trends in
juvenile crime.
In 2001 the juvenile violent crime index arrest rate declined for the seventh consecutive year. The
rate increased dramatically from the late 1980 s through 1994 and then began its steady downward
trend. By 2001 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The racial composition of juvenile population in 2001 was 78% white, 17% black, 4% Asian
/pacific islander, and 1% American Indian. Most Hispanics (an ethnic designation, not a race) were
classified as white. Black youth were overrepresented in juvenile arrests for violent crimes. All
juvenile arrests for violent crimes break down like this 55% involved white youth, 43% involved
black youth, 1% involved Asian youth, and 1% involved American Indian youth.
Assessment of tracking juvenile arrests and crime is important to know so the government
knows what laws are working and what laws need to be revised. Murder arrests in 2001 were
near their lowest levels since at least 1980 for both white and black youth. Between 1993 and
2001, murder rates for white juveniles declined 62% while the rate for black juveniles declined
79%. In 2001 the robbery arrests rates for both black youth and white youth were at a 20 year
low. The 2001 aggravated assault arrest rate for black juveniles was much closer to its 1980
level than was the rate for white juveniles. The juvenile arrest rates for weapons violations and
murder more than doubled between 1987 and the peak year 1993. After 1993 both rates fell
substantially the juvenile arrest rate for weapons law violations was cut in half falling 49% and
returning to the 1987 level. Between 1980 and 1993 the juvenile arrest rate for drug abuse
violations remained within a limited range. Between 1993 and 1997 however the rate grew 77% by

Geo World Cities Economic and Cultural Authority Essay
Question: Demonstrate why world cities are powerful centres of economic and cultural authority
A world city is a large city that has been outstripped its natural urban network and become part of an
international global system. World cities have become the central connecting point for the
multiplicity of linkages and interconnections that sustain the contemporary world economy, and its
social and political systems. According to the 2004 GaWC studies world cities can be ranked
based on their provision of advanced producer services such as accountancy, advertising, finance
and law. In 2008 the rankings according to the GaWC determined that London and New York were

Hence, world cities influence the flow of both finance and investment throughout the world thus
resulting in economic authority.
World cities are markets for a vast range of goods and services as they are areas of massive
accumulations of wealth and have extraordinary purchasing power. The importance of these cities
as markets is shown by patterns of concentrated retailing in high order consumer goods, such as
clothing, jewellery, and art. Streets such as Fifth Avenue in New York are famous for their retailing
of very expensive goods.
Cultural Authority
World cities are centres for a range of cultural facilities and world entertainment. They have
theatres, opera houses, large entertainment. They host major cultural and sporting events ranging
from art exhibitions to tennis tournaments. The 2008 Beijing Olympics and Fifa s world cup in
Munich both were viewed by over a billion people worldwide. New York for example has a very
strong cultural authority with the New York Times reporting that in 2010 48.7 million people
visited New York spending $31 billion, which is almost 7% increase when compared to the 45
million in 2009. New York is home to a range of museums such as the museum of modern art and
the Guggenheim, Broadway, famous universities such as Colombia and NYU, and centres for the
arts such as the Julliard School and Lincon centre. Therefore the cultural authority of a world city
stems from its ability to provide

Examples Of Light And Darkness In Fahrenheit 451
In Fahrenheit 45, Ray Bradbury uses the motifs of light and darkness to develop characters and
demonstrate that knowledge and ignorance impact the wellbeing of society . The motifs of light
and darkness show the crucial effects of knowledge and ignorance on society; knowledge brings
happiness and meaning that ignorance hinders. Demonstrating the effects of knowledge, Clarisse
and her family, as nonconformist of their society, are intellectual as a result of their exposure to
books. Unlike the overwhelming majority of the society, Clarisse and her family are able to

Montag witnesses the amiable effects of knowledge on Clarisse when he first meets her and
becomes exposed to her powerful curiosity and intellect. During this encounter, Montag observes
that her face was [a] fragile milk crystal with a soft constant light in [...] the strangely comfortable
and rare and gently flattering light of the candle, (Bradbury 5). The light used to describe Clarisse
symbolizes her wisdom that she uses to entice Montag. As a result, she is described in pleasurable
way, connoted through Bradbury s use of the words soft, comfortable, and gently flattering. This
shows that Clarisse s intellect develops her character as delightful throughout the novel. Unlike
Clarisse, other figures in the novel are portrayed through the motif of darkness. The firemen, as
conformist, burn books in their society to maintain equality. After his final encounter with Clarisse,
Montag observes the firemen in the firehouse as they lit their eternally burning black pipes. They
and their charcoal hair and soot colored brows and bluish ash smeared cheeks, (Bradbury 30). The
firemen burn books, the essence of knowledge, thus they are responsible for the widespread
establishment of ignorance in their society. As a result, the firemen are described with dark features
through the words charcoal, ash, and soot. The connotation of these dark adjectives contributes to
the characterization of the firemen as destructive, representing their ruination of society. Therefore,
the motifs of light and dark contribute to the characterization of Clarisse and the

Nissan s Theory Of Sustainability

continue using existing practices without putting the business and its resources at risk.
Sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs. There are three theories that relate to Nissan and their
sustainability. They are the just in time theory, the Toyota production theory and the lean concept.
The just in time (JIT) inventorymanagementis the process of ordering and receiving inventory for
production and customer sales only as it is needed and not before. This means that the company
does not hold safety stock and operates with low inventory levels. This strategy helps companies
lower their inventory carrying costs by increasing efficiency and decreasing waste. Waste is

The Balfour declaration was intended to bring together Arabs and Jewish by making a home for the
Jewish population in Palestine. However, after the Balfour declaration was implemented Britain
was being pressured to allow more Jews into Palestine during WWII. Britain realized that this might
cause tension if they increased the influx of Jewsinto the state. This was the spark of the conflict
between Palestinians and the Jewish communities. The conflict increased between Palestineand the
Jewish populations, especially the Zionist, after Britain tried once again to settle peace for the
situation with the Morrison Grady Plan. This would allow for both communities to vote on
allowing more Jewish immigrants into the country. However, the Zionist community was once again

Politics And Endorses Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan decides to enter politics and endorses Hillary Clinton but ends up not making

has had her fair share of ups and downs these past few years and most of them have not been
very positive in her light. While it is not strange to see celebrities endorsing a presidential
candidate in the world of politics, things can often go wrong. Take for instance her latest post on

Clinton s speeches where she speaks about losing sleep over the Benghazi and her obsession with
what she could have done to save those who sacrificed their lives. And in true Lohan

Facebook is the most popular social networking site in several English speaking countries,
including Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. And it was launched in February
2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Facebook is a popular free social
networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send

One standard argument against the overall value of Facebook is that staying in such an online
and direct way in touch is something that is interesting only for the younger generation . That is
maybe true or not. But there is another aspect. If you are for example a senior developer and
you are not interested in staying in contact with your Contacts automatically then maybe you are
interested in the potential business opportunity: Facebook is not only encouraging developers to
create their own applications that will run inside Facebook (on top of the platform). The
Facebook platform has also build in a simple but effective mechanism to promote the usage of
your newly created application: All Contacts of any new user of your Facebook application will
get (in exactly the same way as already described) a notification that these users just started to use
your application. This form of directly build in application promotion/marketing for your
application can deliver high numbers of users to any application so fast that probably most
application providers will be challenged to handle the demand (please see for details this excellent
article from Marc Andreessen ). Example

Comparison Of Blake s Songs Of Innocence And Songs Of...
When regarding the different options I had in comparing two of the works we have already read
this semester, my mind automatically went to William Blake s Songs of Innocence and Songs
of Experience. Blake s examination of the duality of a single subject s nature lends itself
perfectly to a close reading such as this. When looking at the different options available to me in
Blake s volumes, Holy Thursday (both the Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience
versions) demonstrated this duality clearly. The subject in Holy Thursday stays the same,
however, the nature of the subject is drastically different in each poem. In both Songs of
Innocence and Songs of Experience, the poem titled Holy Thursday occurs on Holy Thursday.
This was a special service at St. Paul s Cathedral in London, which was held on the first Thursday
in May. The tradition started in 1782, and this special service was held for the poorest children in
London. These children would be brought to the church by their parish officers, serving
approximately six thousand children. Both poems focus on this procession of children to the
cathedral, describing the state of the children and the varying attitudes towards the event itself.
These varying attitudes are what divides these poems that are so similar in content to two
drastically different creations. In Songs of Innocence, Holy Thursday opens with a picture of a
bright, cheery, and exciting event. Blake chooses crisp and clear language to describe the

Analysis Of Cyrus Ascension Of The Throne
Greek society put forth some of histories greatest works of writing, producing some of histories
greatest sources in which granted insight into both their own culture and society and that o other
civilizations of their time. Out of Greece came such a great writer and historian as Xenophon
who through his military experience was able to gain insight into the inner workings of Persian
society and culture under the rule of Cyrus. His authoring of the work Cyropaedia and other
Persian related sources showcase Cyrus tactics and reformations put into place in order to
successfully rule over a vast multicultural society. It is clear that Cyropaedia is not necessarily
meant to be truly written as a historical document of Cyrus ascension to the throne. The sources
authored by Xenophon instead playthe role of an artist s rendition mixed with philosophical
antidotes towards the role of a leader in the eyes of Xenophon as he uses Cyrus life in order to put
forth his own philosophical ideologies. While filled with some inaccuracies due to Xenophon s own
motives it does offers great insight into the transformation of culture and society of the Persians
under the rule of Cyrus and the various changes he implicated. According to Xenophon, The use of
his education, the ability to rule through fear and demand respect along with the transformation of
the Persian army were all factors that Xenophon discusses leading to the shift of Persian culture and
society from that of one focused upon

Success Is Counted Sweetest
Only those who have experienced failure can truly appreciate success, is the central theme that
Emily Dickinson follows in her poem entitled Success is counted sweetest. This theme is
manifested not only through her encouraging tone, but also through several literary devices, such
as imagery, metaphors and allusions. Dickinson begins the poem by restating the title, which is
followed by an example where nectar symbolizes success. Next, she writes about a solider that
hears the winning team celebrating. However, he hears the victorious group as he is lying on the
ground dying. From this, some may say that the poem is about how people who have been defeated,
appreciate success more than those who simply win. Although, this is not... Show more content on

So clear of victory. From the start Dickinson is talking about the soldiers who have died. Then
she addresses how the soldiers that lived can not begin to fathom the value of success since they
were able to go home. They did not lose their lives as other soldiers did, and the ones who did
could only wish to exchange places with the ones who survived. In addition to Dickinson using
tone to emphasize her point, she also incorporated various literary devices, similar to imagery,
metaphors and allusions. Imagery can be found in the last two lines when she wrote, The distant
strains of triumph, Burst agonized and clear! This gave a direct visual of a man listening to the
sound of victory in the near distance, as he laid motionless on the floor. This invokes a feeling of
sorrow within the readers, since they can envision what Dickinson is talking about. A metaphor is
demonstrated in the lines two and three when she says, To comprehend a nectar, Requires sorest
need. In this instance, nectar symbolizes success. Thus, in order for anyone to reap victory, they
must overcome an obstacle. Yet, to fully interpret this, one has to analyze the meaning of the
metaphor, which makes the readers think deeper and enables the to get a better understanding of
message that is being portrayed. In the same way, the allusions were applied

There will be 400 new hotel rooms built in Elizabeth Quay which is necessary to accommodate
the tourists that are expected to visit. Negative impact 1: Since the project was announced, there
have been many different opinions about whether or not Elizabeth Quay is a good idea. In July
of 2012, it was found that 41% of the population of Perth was for Elizabeth Quay, while 36% did
not think it was a good idea. Interestingly, it was found that liberal and green supporters were
more in favour of the project than labor supporters. Many of those not in favour of the project
believe that it does little for Australian heritage and that it isn t worth the disruption of traffic that
would be caused by the closing of Riverside drive during the building period. It is also thought
that many people in Perth are in fear of change; that they want it to stay the same sleepy town that
it had been in the past. But in opposition to this, supporters of the project have rightly stated that
Perth is the fastest growing city in Australia, and change is inevitable to support all the
requirements of a large population. Negative impact 2: The appeal of the areas around the
Elizabeth Quay development may have been affected due to noise, pollution, smoke and dust in the
air and increased traffic congestion. This could affect the businesses around these areas as they
may not have gotten as many customers. Also, buildings that used to be in prime positions (facing

Affordability is a critical factor to consider when it comes to purchasing a home for the first time.
With a strong job market, a first time home buyer can rest assured that the chances of them keeping
their homes without defaulting on the loan is high. In particular, foreclosure rates have remained
the same in Durham compared to last year, at only one percent. With average home prices
increasing and more people coming to Durham, an unchanged foreclosure rate speaks to the
strength of Durham s economy.
Homes Continue to Appreciate
Another reason the Durham real estate market is so attractive to potential homeowners is the fact
that they can watch their investment grown in no time. Home appreciations within the area have
been impressive for a few years, and homeowners continue to reap the rewards. As a result, the
number of closed sales continues to increase. Over 250 homes were sold in the month of
November in Durham County, an increase of two percent overall. In the same time span, a
neighboring county and home of the capital city Raleigh realized a drop in home closes of over
two percent.

On September 5, 1995, Hillary Clinton delivered an influential speech at The Fourth World

toward women, in other word s gendercide. Gendercide refers to the systematic elimination of a
specific gender group, normally female. It s most common in India, China, and other regions in
Southeast Asia (GirlsKind Foundation). Crimes, such as bride trafficking, infanticide,
abandonment, and dowry related murder; often take place within private households, going

never really considered what the retirement ceremony would be like, who would be there or even

I am hoping this study will bring me new Christian ideas regarding work and life. I need to learn
how to let go of the little things and let God be first in everything I do. My vision after doing this

job but their entire life. I need a total change in my life, so I am willing to accept the challenge
and listen to God. Believing in His word and staying committed to my goals are of the utmost
importance. 2. The word success means many different things to people. Being successful from
a world perspective can mean that you have made it to the top, you are wealthy and you have
done everything that you have wanted to do in your life. However, if you look at success from

Lucy Grealy s Autobiography Of A Face
Having the attitude and mental disposition of a child is something heavily mentioned in media.
People crave to see the world with a youthful eye, being able to find joy and laughter in the worst
of situations. This view of a child is shown in Lucy Grealy s book Autobiography of a Face. In
the following passage, Lucy describes getting her medical results back as a child and her
reaction to her results. I told them I had a malignancy. My mother said I seemed rather happy
about it, and my teachers were shocked by my attitude. I told my teacher and all of my friends,
probably with pride: I had a malignancy. I was going to have a big operation now (Grealy 43).

However, Lucy did not see it this way. She was excited and wanted to share about her new

that they have. Perhaps, adults should adopt a childlike mentality to life and view life with its
hardships as an adventure. Emerson discusses this idea as well is his essay, Nature. The sun
illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. The lover
of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has
retained the spirt of infancy even into the era of manhood (Emerson 183). This lover of nature, has
reclaimed that childhood innocence. This thought brings up some valid questions. If one is to have
a childlike view on life, are they choosing to

History Of Musical History, And Music Theory Of South Africa

January 6, 2015
South Africa This paper is going to talk about the history, musical history, and music theory of
South Africa. The country is populated with 52.98 million people and the main religion is
Christian. The country of South Africa is located on the southern most tip of the continent of Africa
and covers 4% of the total landmass. It is bordered by Mozambique, Namibia, and Botswana. It is a
very biodiverse country because of the Atlantic ocean flanking one side, and the mountain range on
the other side.
History
The country of South Africa has a very complicated and unfortunate history, that lead to a
widespread relief when the struggle was over. The Dutch colonized South Africa in 1652, which
lead to controversy when diamonds were discovered shortly after. Holland was getting a larger
portion of the diamonds being distributed and the people of South Africa were displeased. When
Britain found out, they wanted to join in as well. This led to a long feud, and eventually sparked
the Boer War in 1899, which last until 1902. Britain won and ultimately gained control over South
Africa until 1910, when the Africans didn t agree with Britain s attempt to anglicize their culture.
In 1918, one of the countries greatest leaders, Nelson Mandela was born. He would later go on to
become one of the most influential people of South Africa. In 1925, Afrikaans was declared the

The Story Of Bread And Roses
The story of Bread and roses is another classic example of working class people being exploited
by the company and management whom they work for. After watching the movie, I realized that,
the movie itself exemplify various conceptual theories proposed by sociologist Karl Marx. After
analyzing Bread and Roses through these various conceptual lenses, I have found that these
concepts and theories proposed by Marx best explain different parts of Bread and Roses. His
production theory in Capitalism, The Exploitation of Surplus Value, and The Revolution of the
Proletarians. These chosen concepts and theories do not fully explain the movie by themselves,
but fit perfectly together in various parts throughout the movie. Before I can go on to explain
these concepts and how they tie into Bread and Roses, I feel that a brief summary of the movie
is necessary. Bread and Roses is a fictional story about the exploitation of janitor workers by the
cleaning company Angel. More specifically, the story revolves around Maya, a Mexican
immigrant. Maya, when the story begins, just had recently crossed the border into the United

An Interview As A Group Of Practices
Due to the interview being situated within the qualitative paradigm and due to its nature as a
group of practices (Menter), rather than a rigid, singular method, it is not possible to describe its
characteristics or to explain how to achieve quality and validity, how to employ analysis strategies,
or how to address ethical issues in a one size fits all approach. The very nature of the interviewas
being a flexible, adaptable research tool means that the researcher also needs to respond
accordingly and be prepared to invest his/her own predictive, inferential, and evaluative thinking
rather than relying upon a prescriptive approach. In fact, a review of the literature suggests that
there isn t a text book and for good reason. The success of an interview in the qualitative paradigm
rests upon the knowledge and skill of the researcher himself/herself. Many scholars describe the
interviewer as the research instrument, the only research instrument flexible, skilled, and sensitive
enough to deal with discursive data provided by human participants.
There are many different types of interviews and one way of viewing them may be to plot them on
a continuum from highly structured and more prescriptive at one end to unstructured and highly
flexible at the other. It is important not to confuse flexibility with a lack of rigour. On the contrary,
the researcher must engage with a number of principles and must wrestle with key understandings

Governmental Systems of China
The country of China throughout the last century has experienced a large and significant variety of
governmental systems, from historical to contemporary. From the Manchu Empire which focused
on Confucianism to the current Communist Party of the People s Republic of China, the
government of China has changed drastically throughout the years, ultimately contributing to the
country that Chinais today. It is significant to understand that the changes made in the
governmental system were so drastic, that they stretched from the Mainland all the way to
Taiwan and Hong Kong. The beginning empires of the governmental system in China were
certainly different than the country s modern day government. The first empire can be traced
back to the year 221 B.C. in which the Qin Dynasty was ruling. The dynasty was formed by an
emperor named Qin Shi Huang, after the state of Qin conquered six other states in China. The
dynasty had a goal in mind to create an imperial state which was unified by a higher political
power with a strong economy. This goal was important to the leaders in order to maintain a
strong military power in the country. The Qin Dynasty also wanted control over the peasantry,
which allowed the Great Wall of China to be built. The purpose of building the Great Wall of
China was to put an end to the raids of the nomadic central Asians from the north. From the
leadership of the Qin came a system of writing, as well as a creation of many roads and other public

Health Disparities Research Paper
Environmental Disparities in Health
Health disparities are the inequalities that occur in the provision of healthcare and access to
healthcare across different racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Health disparities negatively
affect groups of people who have experienced greater social or economic obstacles to health. Social
structures and economic systems attributing to health disparities include the social environment,
physical environment, health services, and structural and societal factors. Environmental health
disparities arise among racial and ethnic minorities as social and environmental factors interact.
Studies suggest that disadvantaged communities facing environmental disparities face a greater
likelihood of exposure to ambient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it is intuitive to hypothesize that disparities in health arise because of socioeconomic
differences between racial groups, studies often find that racial disparities persist even after
accounting socioeconomic factors. Ethnicity is highly correlated with residential location, with
minorities and whites often living segregated from one another. Differential residential location
comes with differential exposure to health risks.
. In a 1995 article pertaining to socioeconomic and racial differences in health Dr. Collin Williams
explains how he believes that socioeconomic differences do not completely explain racial
disparities, rather it argues that social class is merely an important mediator. Therefore, it is
hypothesized that race determines one s economic resources, which in turn determine health. Thus,
although socioeconomic conditions do not fully account for health disparities, they are a necessary
part of the equation (Williams

Iroquois Confederacy Research Paper
The roots of the Mohawk tribe, to begin with, date back to the 1600s Iroquois Confederacy
/Iroquois League/Five Nations/Haudenosaunee that comprised a confederation of five Indian tribes
(and later six) that occupied upper New York during the 17th and 18th centuries and that played a
critical role in the struggle between the British and the French for the control of North America. The
five nations characterized themselves as the members of the longhouse and included the Oneida,
Cayuga, Seneca, Mohawk, and Onondaga. Later in 1722, the Tuscarora tribe joined the
Confederacy, and consequently, the British renamed the league as the Six Nations in the same year
in Albany New York (Richter, Merrell, Washburn 33). According to Graymont, the Iroquois
Confederacy was founded by the Great Peacemaker in 1142, who unified the five distinct nations of
the southern region of the Great Lakes. The Peacemaker was thought to have been born in... Show

The Confederacy was ruled by a Grand Council that consisted of a panel of fifty sachems (chiefs),
each of whom represented one of the nations clans. Originally, the Iroquois occupied much of the
present day New York, west of the Hudson River to the banks the St. Lawrence, and northwestern
Pennsylvania. Their influence stretched into Canada and westward through the Great Lakes and
the Allegheny Mountains into Virginia, Kentucky, and the Ohio Valley. The Iroquois had a
matrilineal system of kinship whereby inheritance and descent passed through maternal lines. When
a child was birthed, he was considered born into the mother s clan and acquired his mother s family
social status. Elder women in the clan were highly revered and constituted the clan mothers. They
nominated the clan s chief who reigned for life and also owned the emblems of his office (Richter
27). The Five Nations often assimilated other tribes rather than annihilate them after their

Asian American Identities Of Asian Americans Essay
Despite the fact that Asian Americans have been in Hollywood for decades, there are very few
positive representations of them in film. More often than not, they ve been depicted as stereotypical
caricatures, and more specifically, as foreigners who can t speak grammatically correct English.
Moreover, the negative representations of Asian Americans in film has perpetuated certain
misconceptions about their culture. Chan is Missing (1982) calls for more genuine representations
of Asian Americanidentities through its cast of complex characters and defiance of Asian
stereotypes. The film also urges its viewers to critically think about their own notions of identity
through the use of several recurring themes and filmmaking techniques.
Asians aren t represented often in Hollywood films, but when they are, they re usually confined to
stereotypes or one dimensional character traits. In Chan is Missing, however, though the characters
may at first seem as black and white as the film itself, by the end, many of the characters are well
developed and seem like real people. This is conveyed through the film s simplistic cinematography
as well as the casts naturalistic performances. The camera seems to have both an ominous third
person and, at times, first person perspective. This almost documentary like cinematography
coupled with the actors performances make the story seem much more genuine and interesting than
many conventional films. The film also punctuates the complexity of its

The Theme Of Fear In Hide And Seek
The poems Hide and Seek , Remember and Do not go gentle into that good night have all displayed
the theme of fear at its best, using various techniques to achieve their desired effect. Hide and Seek
deals with the fear and nervousness an innocent young boy could experience as he first steps out
into the potentially dangerous, unrestful society, using a simple childhood game to highlight the
stark differences between childhood and adulthood. On the other hand, Remember copes with the
torment and anxietyRossetti encounters of being potentially forgotten by her lover after death,
although she had given in to her view and instead wishes a better life for her partner, born out of a
deep and devoted love for him. Do not go gentle , however,... Show more content on

Thomas s previous respect for his father s strong and tall figure causes him to push aside
acceptance of death and rage against it, which people are powerless to stop. Even though Thomas
is being impulsive, he knows that Though wise men at their end know dark is right because their
words had forked no lightning they. Thomas realises that although intelligent people know what to
look for after death, they forked no lightning , suggesting that in spite of the wisdom some wise
men possess, they lack the ultimate power of nature, evincing how humans are weak and fragile
against death. Even so, Thomas chooses to vent his fury at death, which is similar to William
Blake s The Tyger , where his anger is directed at the people who had incited the industrial
revolution. His anger is most evident when he mocks them utilising a semantic field connoting to
everyday tools of a blacksmith. What the hammer? what the chain, in what furnace was thy brain?
conveys his puzzlement at the creation of such a sinister movement and his distaste at the society s

Summary On Allegory In Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown
We are born into this good versus evil war and it s almost impossible to ever come out a winner in
it. This war dates all the way back to the beginning of time to Adam and Eve. They had one
restriction and still the temptation that overcomes us all caused their fall. Nathaniel Hawthorne
explains this theory in his Young Goodman Brown story, where evil overcomes and defeats the
good. Hawthorne does this by using these allegorical figures Young goodman Brown, Faith, and the
old unnamed man. These allegories are put in this story to represent this theory, the innocent thrown
into the good versus evil war.
The Puritans in this 1600 s era painted men and women as a perfect imaged, well mannered,
purified, and religious people. Goodman Brown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As our faith is always trying keep us safe, it also is always within us if we believe. This is
demonstrated here as good tries to stay in this everlasting battle goodman Brown states With
Heaven above, and Faith below, I will yet stand firm against the devil! (350). Just as easy as it is
to keep our faith it is that easy to lose it being as goodman Brown completely loses both his faith
and, Faith, when curiosity and temptation takeover and evil takes reign in this ongoing battle.
Finally, the infamous unnamed old man whose allegory represents the evil in this story Hawthorne
makes him that of the devil. The narrator introduces the old man with this staff that resembles the
one of the Adam and Eve story ... bore the likeness of a great black snake, so curiously wrought,
that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself, like a living serpent (347). The devil
tempts and deceives goodman Brown throughout the story, it s safe to say that the evil here has
great powers on overcoming the innocent which he does. When goodman Brown finally gets a
peek at all the people he loves at this witchcraft meeting that the devil is leading that s when it s
over. All good is gone from goodman Brown thanks to the conniving devil and evil wins. The
meaning behind this devil is that

Persuasive Essay About Horse Racing
Covering a one year period... one of every 500 Thoroughbred horse starts at North American

Adams does not work in the big race horse industries she is experienced enough to know how the
horses should be treated. With horse racing it all begins with the breeding of the race horse. All
the race horses all share the same ancestors, the yearlings are born with what breeders hopefully
will become the next winner of a big race. Though breeding would be considered to be a careful
practice the dangers of this reckless breeding became obvious... A four year old colt named
Helwan broke his left front cannon bone.... One week earlier a 5 year old horse named Soul
House collapsed and died... One day before that, a 5 year old horse named Icprideicpower died...
(Farr 3) The horse racing industry has secrets that they will never tell the public, these secrets start
at the very beginning of the horses career as a youth, and gets even more strenuous as their lives go

When Diving Into A Book Or A Piece Of Literature...
When diving into a book or a piece of literature structured like this one must keep an open mind
to the points of view they will encounter. This may not be the average book, for example it is
different than the other literary works that are often discussed in the classroom. Even though it
is not a story like a fairy tale is, this type of book is still enjoyable and easy to discuss. However,
there is a huge amount of opinions in the text of its pages. Even so, if one sticks to knowing that
they are just opinions and not fact it gives less a reason to get confused and can make this a more
enjoyable read. It is not all about the structure of the book but more of the main thoughts it s
author is trying to convey through it s text. There are a lot of things someone could point out
while reading this book. One of the best ones to focus on though would be found in the first
chapter. It starts out talking about how serious West Point is when building their leaders. A good
thing about the start of this chapter is after the author makes the point of how serious West Point is
about their leaders he then gives a very interesting phrase to get the whole point across the readers
mind. The phrase or statement is, Leader of character , when this is brought

  • 2. Should The Minimum Age Be Raised To 18 For many teenagers in the United States their 16th birthday is an important milestone. This is the age that teenagers begin to integrate more into society as they begin to drive and experience new levels of freedom. As 16 is the usual minimum age for employment in most industries some teens even get jobs for personal reason or to benefit their household. The minimum age to acquire a driver s licence should not increase to 18 as younger teens will not be able to help provide for their families with current public transportation methods in the United States. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the first drivers license dates back to 1899 with a license being issued for a steam propelled vehicle in Chicago, Illinois. Over the next five years various states began introducing laws on driving, specifically the minimum age, to ensure public safety. While some states like Massachusetts and Missouri were quick to enact these laws, others were not. South Dakota took over 50 years to enact a minimum driving age in the state. As states, one by one, began drafting these public safety laws, the age required to obtain a license varied from 14 18 years old.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having a license enables these teens to get to and from work, job interviews, or even in some cases become employed in the delivery business. Surprisingly one third of those teens working, do so to support their family. • 3. Indiana Jones Summary What surprised me most about this documentary was that as a child I had just assumed that the sporadic and fantastical adventures of Indiana Jones were fiction in their entirety. I never would have been able to guess that many parts of his adventures mirrored the lives of real life archeologists. What was most interesting about learning about the way Indiana Jones and modern day archeologists share some of the same adventures was the way they spoke about it so practically. The endless insects, the illnesses, the natives and rivalries, it was all like hearing this grand adventure become real life. It was fascinating having this idea of archeology being a somewhat mild and monotonous career flipped around to realize that archeology is really ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Older Brother s Influence in James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues In James Baldwin s Sonny s Blues, the unspoken brotherly bond between the narrator and his younger brother Sonny is illustrated through the narrator s point of view. The two brothers have not spoken in years until the narrator receives a letter from Sonny after his daughter dies. He takes this moment as an important sign from Sonny and feels the needto respond. While both Sonny and the narrator live in separate worlds, all Sonny needs is a brother to care for him while the narrator finds himself in the past eventually learning his role as an older brother. He cares about his brother, which is what Sonny has needed all this time; an older brother to tell him that he should not give up, that he should make smart decisions and make something of himself. The narrator is trying to make up for all the time apart that he has spent from Sonny during his time of need, and perhaps that is his way of making himself feel better about abandoning his younger brother so many years before. Sonny has had a problem with drugs for some time, which leads him having to serve a jail sentence. The narrator tries to stay oblivious, which is part of the reason he turned his back on his younger brother for so many years. I couldn t believe it: but what I mean by that is that I couldn t find any room for it anywhere inside of me. I had kept it outside me for a long time. I hadn t wanted to know. I had had suspicions, but I didn t name them, I kept putting them away (831). The way that he dealt with his younger brother s problems was by turning his back on them. He knew that Sonny was dealing with heavy problems, but chose to look past them and live his own life. He also knows that leaving his brother during the time he needed him the most was wrong of him to do. The narrator goes on to say, I didn t want to believe that I d ever see my brother ... • 8. Essay on Shifting Efficiency Shifting Efficiency One of the most important and life altering inventions in history is the creation of the automobile. The first model was built with a manual transmission, meaning the operator of the vehicle was responsible for manually changing gears to increase speed. This method of acceleration, while efficient, required the complete attention of the operator, and it sometimes took away the enjoyment of driving. This led to the invention of the automatic transmission, a method by which the operator of the vehicle no longer had to switch gears, as this was done automatically. Since the development of the automatic transmission, there has always been conflict about which method of acceleration is more efficient. Driving a vehicle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When using a standard, learning how to create the equilibrium of letting one foot off the clutch and pressing the other on the gas pedal in first gear could take a while to master. An automatic car, with the process of driving in first gear taken care of magically to most people, is much simpler and less time consuming to learn. All a person has to do is put the gear shift in drive and press on the gas pedal. The final question of efficiency lies within the problem of figuring out which type of transmission is better when racing. In this area, the manual transmission becomes the popular choice, compared to the automatic. An automatic does not give the driver the freedom to shift gears when desired, as this is sometimes necessary when shift variation is a key element to winning a race. The manual transmission allows the driver to choose when it is necessary to shift gears, sometimes giving the racer an edge over someone who is racing with an automatic car. Even though an automatic transmission takes the work out of driving something most people are thankful for, given that some could never handle the task of shifting manually, the standard has its own advantages also. The decision about which transmission is more efficient may never be reached, given the advantages and disadvantages of each. It really depends on the person who buys the car and what it will be ... This shows that Clarisse s intellect develops her character as delightful throughout the novel. Unlike Clarisse, other figures in the novel are portrayed through the motif of darkness. After his final encounter with Clarisse, Montag observes the firemen in the firehouse as they lit their eternally burning black pipes. • 23. Comparison Of Blake s Songs Of Innocence And Songs Of... When regarding the different options I had in comparing two of the works we have already read this semester, my mind automatically went to William Blake s Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. Blake s examination of the duality of a single subject s nature lends itself perfectly to a close reading such as this. When looking at the different options available to me in Blake s volumes, Holy Thursday (both the Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience versions) demonstrated this duality clearly. The subject in Holy Thursday stays the same, however, the nature of the subject is drastically different in each poem. In both Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, the poem titled Holy Thursday occurs on Holy Thursday. This was a special service at St. Paul s Cathedral in London, which was held on the first Thursday in May. The tradition started in 1782, and this special service was held for the poorest children in London. These children would be brought to the church by their parish officers, serving approximately six thousand children. Both poems focus on this procession of children to the cathedral, describing the state of the children and the varying attitudes towards the event itself. These varying attitudes are what divides these poems that are so similar in content to two drastically different creations. In Songs of Innocence, Holy Thursday opens with a picture of a bright, cheery, and exciting event. Blake chooses crisp and clear language to describe the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Out of Greece came such a great writer and historian as Xenophon who through his military experience was able to gain insight into the inner workings of Persian society and culture under the rule of Cyrus. His authoring of the work Cyropaedia and other Persian related sources showcase Cyrus tactics and reformations put into place in order to successfully rule over a vast multicultural society. It is clear that Cyropaedia is not necessarily meant to be truly written as a historical document of Cyrus ascension to the throne. The sources authored by Xenophon instead playthe role of an artist s rendition mixed with philosophical antidotes towards the role of a leader in the eyes of Xenophon as he uses Cyrus life in order to put forth his own philosophical ideologies. While filled with some inaccuracies due to Xenophon s own motives it does offers great insight into the transformation of culture and society of the Persians under the rule of Cyrus and the various changes he implicated. Success Is Counted Sweetest Only those who have experienced failure can truly appreciate success, is the central theme that Emily Dickinson follows in her poem entitled Success is counted sweetest. This theme is manifested not only through her encouraging tone, but also through several literary devices, such as imagery, metaphors and allusions. Dickinson begins the poem by restating the title, which is followed by an example where nectar symbolizes success. Next, she writes about a solider that hears the winning team celebrating. However, he hears the victorious group as he is lying on the ground dying. From this, some may say that the poem is about how people who have been defeated, appreciate success more than those who simply win. Although, this is not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So clear of victory. From the start Dickinson is talking about the soldiers who have died. Then she addresses how the soldiers that lived can not begin to fathom the value of success since they were able to go home. They did not lose their lives as other soldiers did, and the ones who did could only wish to exchange places with the ones who survived. In addition to Dickinson using tone to emphasize her point, she also incorporated various literary devices, similar to imagery, metaphors and allusions. Imagery can be found in the last two lines when she wrote, The distant strains of triumph, Burst agonized and clear! This gave a direct visual of a man listening to the sound of victory in the near distance, as he laid motionless on the floor. This invokes a feeling of sorrow within the readers, since they can envision what Dickinson is talking about. A metaphor is demonstrated in the lines two and three when she says, To comprehend a nectar, Requires sorest need. In this instance, nectar symbolizes success. Thus, in order for anyone to reap victory, they must overcome an obstacle. Yet, to fully interpret this, one has to analyze the meaning of the metaphor, which makes the readers think deeper and enables the to get a better understanding of message that is being portrayed. In July of 2012, it was found that 41% of the population of Perth was for Elizabeth Quay, while 36% did not think it was a good idea. Interestingly, it was found that liberal and green supporters were more in favour of the project than labor supporters. Many of those not in favour of the project believe that it does little for Australian heritage and that it isn t worth the disruption of traffic that would be caused by the closing of Riverside drive during the building period. It is also thought that many people in Perth are in fear of change; that they want it to stay the same sleepy town that it had been in the past. But in opposition to this, supporters of the project have rightly stated that Perth is the fastest growing city in Australia, and change is inevitable to support all the requirements of a large population. Negative impact 2: The appeal of the areas around the Elizabeth Quay development may have been affected due to noise, pollution, smoke and dust in the air and increased traffic congestion. This could affect the businesses around these areas as they may not have gotten as many customers. Also, buildings that used to be in prime positions (facing the river) will have lost value due ... Although it is intuitive to hypothesize that disparities in health arise because of socioeconomic differences between racial groups, studies often find that racial disparities persist even after accounting socioeconomic factors. Ethnicity is highly correlated with residential location, with minorities and whites often living segregated from one another. Differential residential location comes with differential exposure to health risks. . In a 1995 article pertaining to socioeconomic and racial differences in health Dr. Collin Williams explains how he believes that socioeconomic differences do not completely explain racial disparities, rather it argues that social class is merely an important mediator. Therefore, it is hypothesized that race determines one s economic resources, which in turn determine health. Thus, although socioeconomic conditions do not fully account for health disparities, they are a necessary part of the equation (Williams ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Asian American Identities Of Asian Americans Essay Despite the fact that Asian Americans have been in Hollywood for decades, there are very few positive representations of them in film. More often than not, they ve been depicted as stereotypical caricatures, and more specifically, as foreigners who can t speak grammatically correct English. Moreover, the negative representations of Asian Americans in film has perpetuated certain misconceptions about their culture. Chan is Missing (1982) calls for more genuine representations of Asian Americanidentities through its cast of complex characters and defiance of Asian stereotypes. The film also urges its viewers to critically think about their own notions of identity through the use of several recurring themes and filmmaking techniques. Asians aren t represented often in Hollywood films, but when they are, they re usually confined to stereotypes or one dimensional character traits. In Chan is Missing, however, though the characters may at first seem as black and white as the film itself, by the end, many of the characters are well developed and seem like real people. This is conveyed through the film s simplistic cinematography as well as the casts naturalistic performances. The camera seems to have both an ominous third person and, at times, first person perspective. This almost documentary like cinematography coupled with the actors performances make the story seem much more genuine and interesting than many conventional films. The film also punctuates the complexity of its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
