The Consequences of Bringing the Past with You Immediately into Tim O Brien s short story
The Things They Carried the reader is introduced to First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and the letters
he carried from his past back home. Throughout the story, readers are also introduced to other
items and supplies which were largely determined by necessity (O Brien 1) as well as items
deemed a luxury that each individual soldier carried with him for one reason or another. Pictures,
memorabilia, and personal items all acted as a gateway into a portal which would bring them
back home to the ones they loved if only for five minutes at a time. Although the pictures,
memorabilia and personal items of Cross and his soldiers alike, helped them recall back to an era
much more peaceful, the consequences of bringing the past with you can carry exceedingly
negative side effects.
Within the short story, the audience learns that Jimmy Cross carries letters and pictures from his
crush from back home, Martha. Multiple times within the story Jimmy Cross consults these pictures
and letters to distract himself from the war providing a bit of comfort in his harsh environment.
With progression through the story, readers find Jimmy Cross continuously reviewing the pictures
and letters from his dear Martha, letting his mind drift off thinking about her, distracting him from
his duties at hand. These distractions happen more and more often, eventually leading to the most
harrowing consequence. First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross s divergence from his important tasks at
hand, result in Ted Lavender being killed while under the supervision of Cross himself. This
being the key turning point for Cross, as he starts to realize his lapse in judgment and focus, had
directly cost the life of one of his soldiers. This resulting in him discovering that the pictures and
letters from Martha, he was using as hope for his future back home, and comfort from the issues at
hand, were the stemming source of all his problems and distractions, which ultimately cost the life

learning about musical techniques and applying it to my songwriting process, it helped me become

Before taking this course, I used to just sing my songs, but never used to write them down.
Throughout, the course I learned that it s important to work on your songs even if it s working
on part of it. Taking time to improve you songs is already a step forward. Starting from lesson
two, I learned the importance of having a strong premise. I found this very useful because then
you have an idea of what your song is going to be about. You start thinking of emotion and
storyline you want to write in the lyrics. For example, if you premise is about heartbreak, then the
lyrics will be about a relationship, with maybe a sad piano accompaniment. Another interesting
thing I learned about lesson two was the articles we read about techniques for finding ways to be
inspired when writing a song. The article that was very useful was Finding Inspiration. From this
article, a technique that I found useful was to write music about yourself or experiences. I found
this to be a common thing for songwriters, according to the book we read In their Own Words,

The drama that was used was an American crime drama, FLASHPOINT. A textual analysis was

Iranian Revolution in the 1980 s. The main character Marji, is a young girl living during this

I am reading Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli and I am finished with the book. This book is about a girl
who is very different from everyone moving to this new school. At first everyone seems to lover
her, but it all changes later in the year. One gu named Leo gives her chance and he learns that
being different is ok. In this paper I will be connecting and evaluating. I can connect to the character
Stargirlbecause we are both very different from the crowd. One way is that we both do things
differently from everyone else. Stargirlis very unique when it comes to things. One example of

It was a quiet morning of December 14, 2012 in Newtown, CT, USA during the usual winter
