Exploring Whether All Morality Should Reduce to Respecting...
Kantian Ethics states that all morality can be reduced to respecting autonomy. This theory has
faced criticisms as well as support. Its most plausible idea is that autonomous agents are capable of
making their own decisions and even if their choices may not be the best for them, these choices
should be respected. However, criticisms of this theory include concerns such as 1) respecting
autonomyis not equivalent to respecting the autonomous agent, 2) the theory does not concern (or
concerns very little) with non autonomous agents such as children and non human animals, 3) it is
implausible that respecting autonomy is the only factor determining morality, and 4) respecting
others autonomy does not follow from respecting one s own autonomy.... Show more content on

In response to this predicament, Rawls presents Contractualism, where what is right is what
everyone would agree to behind a Veil of Ignorance. While behind this veil, an individual is not
aware of their social class, sex, race, and any other psychological traits that may prevent one
from making a fair judgement. Prioritizing autonomies while behind the Veil of Ignorance can be
presumed to be fair and just. However, this theory is purely hypothetical and due to this fact,
even if we can make ourselves be unaware of our social class, sex, race, and other psychological
traits choices made behind the veil seem irrelevant to reality. Furthermore, agreement behind the
Veil of Ignorance does not ensure that the decision is actually permissive because people may
agree to a sacrifice if the probability of it happening to them is rare. For instance, people may agree
to harvesting organs from healthy individuals to save a greater number of individuals but this does
not mean that this act is morally permissible. I have presented how Rawls Contractualism fails to
support Kantian Ethics which required prioritizing between one s own autonomy against another s.
Even if the problem of conflicting autonomies were resolved, Kant s theory still faces criticisms
such as the fact that the theory does not respect an individual and their decisions as much as it
respects autonomy, does not efficiently discourage unequal cruelty to non autonomous agents, and
does not imprint any value on

Examples Of Self Preservation In Rashomon
In Akira Kurosawa s Japanese murder mystery film, Rashomon, Akira tells the story of a
slaughtered samurai. The story of the murder is revealed four times to a judge, each by a different
person who witnessed the crime. Each of the stories contradicts the previous. Each of the stories
has a constant of rape, murder, and the use of a dagger as the murder weapon, but each story
depicts differing methods and motives. The stories seem equally plausible and the film does not
disclose which of the characters is telling the truth. Each of the characters has their own agenda and
a reputation to protect. In this case, all four stories were fabricated to protect the characters
reputations. Especially in the era where this film takes place, reputation meant everything. All
living things are susceptible... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He claims to have tricked the samurai to step off the mountain trail with him and look at an arsenal
of ancient swords he had found. He then ties the samurai to the tree and returns to capture the
samurai s wife, giving the impression that Tajomaru is sly and shrewd. In Tajomaru s version of the
story, he entices the woman making it seem as if the woman falls in love with him. This however,
is contradicted by the other stories where it is said that Tajomaru forced himself onto the woman.
Out of honor and respect, Tajomaru frees the samurai and they begin to duel for the woman s
love. Tajomaru tells of a valorous and honorable sword battle that ensued between the two,
whereas the story of the woodcutter states that the duel was clumsy and that Tajomaru took a
cheap shot at the samurai, which ultimately ended his life. He tells this embellished, spectacular
story of a damsel in distress, how he is to rescue her and they are to marry and live happily ever
after together, to disguise his weakness of being repulsive and a

Justification Of John Stuart Mill
Let s create an alternative world, one without liberty, and popular social customs must be
followed. If one deviates from these norms, society will ostracize the person until that person
conforms to the popular beliefs and values. John Stuart Mill starts off with an argument
questioning to what extent the nature and limits of the power which can legitimately [exercise] by
society over the individual (Mill, n.d., p. Chapter 1). So what if, the nature and limits of power of
society know no bounds? This will lead us to the alternative world where libertyand conformity will
be social norms. So then Mill goes on and argues that If all mankind minus one, were of one
opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in
silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind
(Mill, n.d., p. Chapter 2). Mill is proposing new ideas in which there are limits and justification of
using that power to silencing the individual but overall believe in the freedom of expression. John
Stuart Millis correct that mankind should not be justifiable in using their power to silence the
individual and frankly, they have no right to, if they do silence the individual, they silence
development of humanity. This is due to the harm principle, silencing of ideas, individuality, and
limits of authority.
First off, the harm principle introduced by Mill explains why all mankind minus one is unjustifiable
to silence

The main difference between the federal budget and the...
The main difference between the federal budget and the state and local budgets is the issue of a
monetary deficit, in which expenditures in the budget exceeds revenues that were estimated. State
and local governments are required to balance their budgets. The federal government is allowed to
borrow money to meet its obligations and have a deficit. The federal governmentcollects the most
tax revenue, but state and local governments have a greater range of revenue options for funding
their budgets. The federal government relies mainly on income taxes, capital gains and Social
Security taxes. State and local governments collect sales taxes, taxes on fuel, property taxes and
fees from special licenses and permits. Also, many state and local... Show more content on

The next largest portion at almost 10% of the budget is allotted to Criminal Justice. In the state of
Georgia we have 159 state funded prisons that house over 57,000 inmates (Ga Prison Fact Sheet).
This also includes over 13,000 state employees that run these facilities (AJC Prison). Each inmate
takes approximately $51 a day. This includes housing, meals and general day to day activities (Ga
Prison Fact Sheet). Forth largest in the Georgia budget is for Debt Services. Debt services include
the payments of the principal and interest of any general or long term obligation that the state has
accrued. This amount is over $64 million in 2012. Lastly, the fifth largest budget allocation is for
transportation. Transportation encompasses road repair, improving the efficiency of the movement
of goods, construction of new roads and Highways and reducing congestion within the state. Along
with these services, the salaries and benefits of their employees are figured into this section of the

Deregulation Of Advertising On Children
We all love new things: jackets, shirts, shoes, smartphones and apps. Who doesn t feel good
when they have the latest and the greatest thing that draws the attention and admiration of our
peers? But why do we feel so good and how did we know what product was going to make us feel
so good? Advertisers. The modern American child is clearly a target for companies seeking to
make more and more money from kids who constantly want more and more stuff. But advertisers
fail to acknowledge the harm they are doing to children and our society, and it is clear that
advertisingto children and teens unfairly takes advantage of their inability to identify when and how
they are being manipulated. Marketingand persuasive techniques are powerful tools for... Show

Psychologists point out that the media blitz targets what is known to be a vulnerable group
because children lack the ability to discern when they are being manipulated. That means that
unlike adults, children are being sucked in unknowingly to believe the messages advertisers
create. Their mind is being changed without knowing it adults at least are aware that companies
are trying to get them to buy or believe something. Kids simply can t understand what s happening
to them. As part of the new media blitz, not only are children being advertised to without parents
knowledge, like at sleepovers, but they are also being marketed to in places that are traditionally
marketing free: schools, daycares, and homes. In an American Psychologists Association article,
Driving Teen Egos and buying through branding a psychologist who supports regulating
advertising to teens, Allen D. Kanner, PhD, points out that children suffer because The message
that doesn t reach teens is that what is important is how you think, what you like...and who you are

How Has Led Zeppelin Changed Society
Led Zeppelin was created when the band Yardbirds, a previous band that Jimmy Page played in,
disbanded. Page, the lead guitarist, found Robert Plant and John Bonham and created a new
band which would be called the New Yardbirds; they would later adopt the name Led Zeppelin.
The main goal they wanted to achieve was to emphasize the guitar, which they accomplished
Plant, the singer, had a peculiar voice, raspy with many vocal ranges that he did not know when
to hold back his voice. Not only was he capable of jaw dropping power and velocity, but he also
deftly incorporated evocative percussion elements which added texture and shading. (Led Zeppelin
). The drummer, John Bonham, was a fast drummer who kept perfect time. Led Zeppelin effected
music in multiple ways, such as changing the idea of rock music by creating a blueprint for heavy
metal musicand by influencing the styles of many people. The band was inducted into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 (Led Zeppelin). Led Zeppelin was and still is arguably one of the best

revealed the deep division in what was once thought to be a homogeneous audience. (The Long

people wanted to emit sex appeal and they did by wearing unbuttoned button up shirts and

After 4 weeks she figured out she was pregnant. Isabel conversed with a trusted auntie and she
took her to go get checked. She peed in a container and yup those 2 lines came up. Isabel took a
gander at her Aunt and she didn t generally recognize what say. She told Isabel that it would have

parenthood during a period when her fundamental concerns ought to be far not exactly those of

My first selection is the Rough Sea at a Jetty. The reason I chose this piece is because of the
colors and drawing techniques used, as well as the balance of the overall piece. The piece is a
dark hued painting (oil on canvas) made in the 1650s, depicting a very stormy sea with small
sailboats in the background. The foreground consists of two men standing on a jetty that has a
pole like wooden structure standing on it; the two men appear to be conversing, probably about
the storm. The painting is asymmetrical because if you cut it down the middle vertically then
one side would have the wooden pole, most of the jetty and the two men in it, while the other
side would have virtually nothing except some distant (almost obscure) sailboats, part of the jetty
and a distant smaller jetty. The painting is unified by its theme: A stormy sea by a jetty. The
waves are painted so as to show them crashing into one another by painting the caps white and
using bold curves to emphasize the choppiness of the sea. The dark clouds in the background are a
testament to the severity of the storm. The emphasis is on the jetty and men in the foreground.
There are also about four sailboats positioned across the piece in the background to contrast against
the dark grey sky and grey

Disadvantages Of Commercial Arbitration
Advantages of Commercial Arbitration National and International
1.Relative costs and speed of commercial arbitration and litigation.
The costs and efficiency of different dispute resolution mechanisms vary from time to time and
place to place. Nonetheless, there have been recurrent complaints from commercial users, as well as
individuals, about the delays and expenses imposed by many national court systems..
In considering the relative cost and speed of international arbitration versus litigation, it is important
to take into account the likelihood of jurisdictional disputes and parallel proceedings. Suppose
Japanese and a French company enter into a long term sales agreement, which leads to disputes.
Assuming there is no agreement to arbitrate such disputes, what is likely to occur after efforts to
amicably settle the disputes fail? Where is the Japanese company likely to want the parties disputes
resolved? The French company? What happens if both companies pursue their favoured means of
dispute resolution? What happens if each company succeeds in obtaining a judgment in its favour
from its local courts?
2.Absence of appellate review. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In some jurisdictions, such appeals are essentially de novo re litigations; in other jurisdictions,
decisions of law are subject to de novo review, while reviews of factual finding are subject to more
deferential appellate scrutiny. In contrast, in most developed jurisdictions, international arbitral
awards are subject to only very limited judicial review (ordinarily only on issues of jurisdiction,
procedural unfairness, or public policy), not extending to the merits of the arbitral tribunal s
decision .Party autonomy with regard to arbitral procedures and selection of

This report will cover the dataset diabetes details from Efron et al.(2003). Throughout this report,
we will explore the potential relationship between the ten predictor variables: age, sex, BMI,
average blood pressure, and six blood serum measurements (tc, ldl, hdl, tch, ltg, glu) on a
quantitative measure of disease progression one year after the baseline. There are 442 diabetes
patients, or records in the dataset. In this report, we will explore different methods and cross
validation techniques to understand these sample datasets leveraging linear regression, ridge
regression, lasso method and metrics like our MSE, the mean prediction error and standard errors
of the test dataset. First, we will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the positive coefficients, we will see an increase in one unit of each variable separately
compared with the advancement in diabetes. With a 0.05 parameter, the linear regression model
selects 5 predictor variables with significance, age, tc, ldl, tch, and glu. To validate the
assumption, we can plot the residuals versus the fitted values to see if there are any indications of
signs of random distributions. For the residual plot, we see there are no indications or violations of
random distribution and can calculate the MSE of the model, which is 3111.265. Next, we will
leverage the best subset method to select the predictor variables that are truly impactful to the
model.
Best Subset Model
With our best subset method, we can leverage our lowest BIC metric to select the best model.
We can plot out best subset method and pinpoint the number of variables to select. The plot
below showcases that the lowest point or value of BIC, contains 6 variables. We leverage the
BIC metric because it places a penalty on models with more or many variables. Meaning, the
mode variable a model has, the bigger the penalty. We can review the coefficients, standard errors,
t value, and the p values for the best subset method with the significant six variables. Our MSE
metric for the 6 variable best subset model is 3090.483, a slight decrease from our linear regression
model.

Social media is now home to symbolic modeling. An advantage to symbolic modeling in that it
can send information to an infinite amount of people in different locations in no time (Bandura,
2005). People will film themselves physically or verbally abusing other individuals while others
just watch and encourage them. While they know it is wrong they do nothing to help these
people and in a sense are helping to victimize these individuals that are being abused. There are
also fights in comment sections and the general saying is that it is online so what could it hurt?

This is significant because of the different beliefs system each country has about themselves and
how it is passed on to its members. Members learn from the community or by themselves.
Observations and morals are affected by culture as each group has different set of values they
live by. In addition there are individualistic people in collective cultures and collectivism in
individualistic cultures (Bandura, 2002). What does this mean for theory? That it will have
different applications and will take some learning on its own to understand where people are
coming from. You can read about a culture, listen to stories but nothing will replace actually
living and interacting. In order to understand why people believe the way they do it is beneficial
to learn from a social perspective and become submerged in different cultures to gain a better
understanding of customs, religious acts, and the systems these groups have in place is
completely beneficial to a counselor. Conclusion Social learning theory has many facets that do
not have to deal primarily with observational learning. It now deals with the cognitions people
have and how they see themselves. The use of media is starting to expand to a more global
perspective with the invention of social media sites. This means people do not have to directly
witness behaviors they can now witness them on a screen at any given time. People use modeling
for both behaviors and language skills.

Breast Cancer Report
1.Introduction
1.1 Introduction
Human epidermal growth factor (HER2) is a specialised protein that has the ability to control the
growth and spread of certain cancers. Breast cancer is defined as HER2 positive (HER2+) when
there is an extremely high level of HER2 receptors present within the cancerous tumour of the breast
tissue (Macmillan, 2013).
1.2 Aims and objectives
This report aims to give an overview on breast cancer focusing on the HER2+ sub type of the
disease; it includes an overview of aetiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation,
diagnosis and treatment. It will also include how the advances in stratified medicine have helped
tailor treatment for patients suffering from the HER2+ form of breast cancer.

Breast cancer has been the most common cancer in the UK since 1997, in 2011 alone it was
accountable for 30% of all new cancer diagnosed in women (Cancer Research UK, 2014). Between
15 25% of newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer will test positive for the over expression of the
HER2 protein (Macmillan, 2014). The incidence of breast cancer in Northern Ireland is close to
the average for developed countries (NI Cancer Registry, 2011). However for the past 20 years
Northern Irelands incidence has been the lowest in the UK (Cancer Research UK, 2014).
3. Pathophysiology
Like all cancers, breast cancer develops because of defects in the DNA of a single cell. Cancers
arise when there is an accumulation of genetic mutations within genes that control cell growth and
division or the repair of damaged DNA. This causes damage allowing cells to grow and divide
uncontrollably forming a tumour. These mutations are called somatic mutations and are not
inherited (GHR, 2007) In addition to these genetic changes researchers have identified many other
factors that increase the risk of developing of breast cancer, these were previously mentioned.
4. Clinical Presentation
The symptoms of breast cancer can be categorised into early stage

Rod-Shaped Cell Case Study
1. Under a microscope, you can see a rod shaped cell that is rapidly swimming forward. What do
you automatically know about the bacterium s structure?
How would the bacterium use its flagellum for chemotaxis?
Bacillus is a rod shaped cell. The flagellum on the surface of the bacterium can detect nutrients in
the environment and they are drawn to it when the nutrient concentration is high. It spins its
flagella to swim towards the nutrient. The movement responding to chemical gradient is called
chemotaxis. When the bacterium feels the decrease in nutrient concentration, it will change its
direction and orient to move where it can get a high nutrient source. If it detects a potential toxic
chemical it will draw away and spin and swim away ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a virus that may cause the formation of papillomas and deadly malignant tumors. A
common term for a papilloma is a wart. The epithelium, or epithelial layer that these warts are
found on is the layer of tissue that lines the outer surface of the body, skin and mucous
membranes, as well as hollow organs, like the stomach or uterus and the body glands. However,
the virus itself infects the basal, or bottom most portion of the epithelium, when the epithelium is
traumatized by something like a cut or micro abrasion. When it touches the area of the skin or
mucous membranes that have a papilloma to any area of your damaged skin, it is a way to get
infected. It can get you infected even without visible wart. HPV may occur by having contact
with people showing no signs of the disease. HPV can cause deadly disease, notably cervical
cancer. This is a malignant tumor of the cervix. HPV has also been implicated with massive
amounts of warts growing in respiratory tract, suffocating people to death and also cancers affecting

Revenge and Hatred in Sylvia Plath s Daddy Essay
Revenge and Hatred in Plath s Daddy
The power of Plath s Daddy to threaten, shock and move the reader remains undiminished, years
after it was written. To the unsuspecting reader, the experience of first reading Daddy is a
confusion of discomfort, excitement and guilty pleasure, for the pleasures of revenge are said to
be sweet, and this is a revenge poem of the first rank. Revenge upon whom? Father? Perhaps, more
likely, upon her husband. And her aim was true, for if anything Plathwrote damaged Ted Hughes
for posterity, Daddy is it. From this poem, we gather our indelible impressions of Hughes as a
brute, a wife beater, a vampire, even an implied racist and murderer (if we extend the Hitler
metaphor to its fullest implications) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
it literally rocked the moral fiber of the world, and we?re still reeling (if more jaded). It was a
subject on fire in the public imagination at the time. Plath?s appropriation of Holocaust imagery
for her own ends, which strikes so many as grossly inappropriate, can perhaps be interpreted as
stemming from that initial horrified zeitgeist. Perhaps she felt she was raising consciousness and
expressing solidarity of a sort. Her remarks in her interview with Peter Orr about making her
poetry relevant can be looked at from such an angle.
Of course, the other point of view is that she was stealing other people s real tragedy and tacking it
on to her own little psychic turbulence for shock value and good visceral punch to the reader s
gut. I think we must always keep in mind that Plath, to A. Alvarez, referred to this poem (and
Lady Lazarus , a piece even more riddled with Holocaust imagery) as a bit of light verse. Was
she being sarcastic? Reading Alvarez s memoir, I think he felt she was quite serious. So what on
earth does that tell us about this poet? I do think it implies a profound self absorption and
narcissism. Chuffing me off like a Jew the callousness of this poem, if one stops to think about it
(and it s very hard to do so while in the poem s grip), is appalling. Its ramifications are endless

The Effect Of Chlorofluorocarbon And...
Chlorofluorocarbon and hydrochlorofluorocarbon refrigerants have been widely used in traditional
cooling systems. These refrigerants accelerate the depletion of the Earth s ozone layer. Therefore,
adsorption air conditioning technology attracted much attention recently as an alternative solution
due to its advantage of environmental friendliness. This system as it powered by waste and/or solar
heatcan help to reduce required energyand thermal pollution. This paper presents an overview of
research which have been carried out on adsorption cooling systems powered by waste heat from
automobiles.
Many adsorption pairs have been studied. Zeolite water as a working adsorption pair has been
widely used in automobile adsorption cooling systems. This pair has been powered by exhaust
gases from the engine due to its relatively high working temperature. Silica gel water pair has been
also widely used in automobile adsorption cooling systems. It has been powered by waste heat from
water coolant in the engine due to its relatively low working temperature. Results show that this
technology can help in increasing overall engine efficiency and reduce thermal pollution from
engines. Various modifications in adsorption cooling systems are still required. One of the
bottlenecks which prevents the improvement of adsorption cooling technology is its relatively low
performance compared to conventional vapor mechanical compression technologies.

Haiti Earthquake Analysis
This article from the Wall Street Journal begins by vividly describing a decrepit hospital in Haiti
that was granted funds after the earthquake, but emphasizes that it is still in the same detrimental
state it was in directly after the earthquake hit. This introduction successfully illustrates how Haiti
has struggled to capitalize on the aid sent by other nations. This biased idea in itself makes
readers question the significance of assisting Haiti, if so minimal changes have resulted from the
deliverance of financial support and aid. The article furthermore compares the short term relief
efforts of many countries to a classic case of giving a man a fish instead of teaching him to fish

An economic adviser to Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive is also quoted in the article, stating
the idea that these Non government organizations (NGOs) have irreversibly infantized the
country, or in other words, made the country lack a sense of self sufficiency. Yet, the article does
not any give positive information regarding the impact of this aid, proving only further evidence
of discussing the issue through a limited debate. Notwithstanding, the article does recognize that
relief efforts and aid did help millions of Haitians in the wake of extreme havoc, but wonders
whether the efforts of well funded aid groups some of which have been in Haiti for 50 years can
improve Haiti s long term outlook is another matter (CГіrdoba). The article is closed by describing
the hospital s slow progress, and inserts yet another subjective ideology: that the only way to save
the hospital, along with the economy in Haiti, is to veer away from foreign aid. This discloses the
reader to only one subjective view, a view that creates a negative connotation with sending

Religious and Traditional Symbols in the Lottery
Religious groups encourage and enforce conformity of their social norms and beliefs upon their
members. Religious traditions are usually passed on from parent to child at an early age. In The
Lottery, Shirley Jackson reveals the tradition of the lottery and how all of the villagers conform to
the ritual of a human sacrifice. Growing up with an exceptionally religious father I can relate to
way of thinking of the villagers that traditions are accepted without questioning.
In The lottery, the children were stuffing their pockets with stones before all of the parents had

Luckily my mother disagreed with the whole idea and the television remained . Even though my
mother had not been a true believer in the church she had always gone along with my father s
traditions for fear of being a disappointment to the church. But when it was her turn to suffer and to
not be able to watch her favorite soaps she didn t look at the situation in the same way.
This was the case with Mrs. Hutchinson in The lottery, she had not seen any crime in the annual
stoning until it had directly affected her, Tessie Hutchison was in the center of a cleared space
by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. It isn t fair, she
said (534).The act of the annual lottery can be seen as a religious sacrificing, such as the human
sacrificing to the Gods in ancient times and also the crucifixion of Jesus Christ that allowed
mankind to be forgiven for their sins. My father s religion strongly believes in personal salvation.
They force their ideals upon others and they point out the sinful behaviors of society. All of my
father s church traditions seem to allow the members to believe that they are being separated from
what they perceive as evil.
In both The lottery and my father s religion the theme that I believe that is best represented is the
fear of change. The tradition of the lottery is so firmly established that no one in the village had

Greedlessness In Washington Irving s The Legend Of Sleepy...
Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820, which tells the story of Ichabod
Crane, a schoolmaster who persistently frightens himself with supernatural beings he supposes he
sees and hears on his way home from school. At one point in the story, Crane rivals for the love of
a lady with a man named Abraham Van Brunt. This man, known as Brom Bones to the townspeople,
took advantage of Ichabod Cranes credulousness to scare him out of town through a prank in which
he impersonated the dreaded Headless Horseman, the ghost of Sleepy Hollow. This caused Ichabod
to flee town out of terror. Ichabod Crane s characteristics of greed, superstition, and fearfulness
ended up causing his downfall. Ichabod Crane s greediness hindered his relationship with the
townspeople, consequently making some people, such as Brom Bones, more than happy to
expel Crane from the town, and others not sorry when he left. Ichabod had a great gluttonous
appetite, so he lived successively a week at a time with his pupils and their families, because
they simply could not afford to house such a gourmand. Moreover, he earned the distaste of the
other men of the town while trying to earn the affections of a lady named Katrina Van Tassel,
whom he hoped to marry only because of her wealth. He knew if he was to marry her, he would
have many delicious meals awaiting him. The pedagogue s mouth watered as he looked upon this
sumptuous promise of luxurious winter fare. Ichabod Crane s greed

exposed to FIP don t show symptoms (Cornell). Some cats may either show mild upper

exposed to the feline coronavirus develop FIP, and even then it may take weeks, months, or even

Dissonance Theory To Change Eliza s Attitude Towards Soccer
Chris could use dissonance theory to change Eliza s attitude towards soccer. Dissonance theory
explains how people go about decreasing negative arousal caused by a mismatch of their
attitudes and behavior. Aronson and Carlsmith conducted a study in which two groups of kids
were asked to leave a not play with a toy, and then left alone with it. Only one group of kids were
told there would a consequence if they played with the toy. Kids from both groups left the toy
alone, but the kids in the non consequence group did not play with the toy even when they were
told they could. This was because they changed their attitude to explain why they hadn t played
with the toy to decrease dissonance caused by a mismatch in attitude and behavior. The second
group did not need to do this, as they had a sufficient external reason to leave the toy alone.
When Eliza wants to stop Chris could simply ask her to keep going. Since her father did not
suggest a consequence she is unlikely to attribute her behavior to his request. This creates
dissonance as her attitudes would suggest that she would not have continued to go to soccer, yet
she went anyway. Eliza will adjust her attitude to line up with her behavior to decrease dissonance
and she will come to believe that she enjoys soccer.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Why is Iran Arming: An Examination of a Nuclear Iran through International Relations Theory
A nuclear Iran may be inevitable within the next decade. There is ample evidence suggesting that
Iran has the intention and capability of obtaining nuclear weapons. According to Fox News, a new
document issued by the Department of Defense on the Iran nuclear threat states: Iran could
probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the
United States by 2015. Clark Abt, professor at Harvard University, estimates that a single nuclear
attack on a major US harbor, such as New York City or Washington DC, could cause a loss of one
million civilians and could create three trillion dollars of economic losses. In order to identify the
necessary steps to avert Iran from procuring nuclear weapons and thus preventing possible nuclear
attacks, it is crucial to understand why Iran seeks to arm in the first place. It is profusely clear that
International relations theories provide an insight into why Iran aspires to develop a nuclear
program. However, upon further examination, only the realist and identity, not the liberal, theories
in international relations can further our knowledge of this issue. Amongst the numerous reasons
for Iran s desire to have nuclear weapons is the innate insecurity and fear of possible attacks by the
neighboring countries and their allies. An illustration

Romanticism, By Charles Baudelaire
Romanticism is an artistic revolt that originated in Europe in the 18th century. It rejected the
rationalism, logical thinking, and societal norms associated with the Age of Enlightenment. Rather,
it embraced ideals that came out of the French Revolution. The works of art focused on promoting
free thinking and provoking feeling from its viewers. To further explain Romanticism, poet and
critic Charles Baudelaire once wrote that romanticism is precisely situated neither in choice of
subject nor in exact truth, but in way of feeling. Various paintings throughout the 18th and 19th
century helped to define this time in art history. During the Romanticism era, it was through the
emphasis on emotion, freedom, and the everyday life that the Romantic principles of the sublime
and the picturesque were expressed. One of the various themes present in Romanticism is emotion.
A major part of the Romanticism movement was placing focus on emotion as opposed to reason.
In paintings where a central theme is emotion, artists use the sublimity and picturesque aspects of
nature to symbolize feeling or convey a narrative. In The Lady of Shalott (1888) by John William
Waterhouse, the subject of the painting is a woman, sitting alone in a boat. It takes inspiration from
a scene from a poem of the same name by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The poem tells the story of the
young woman and her unrequited love for Sir Lancelot. Even though the focus of the image is the
sorrowful woman, the composition

improve the leased property, it may be difficult to obtain financing secured by a leasehold
interest. Moreover, the leasehold may contain provisions that prohibit the seller from
mortgaging the leasehold interest. Because the property involved in a sale leaseback generally
is held for use in the seller s trade or business, it qualifies for capital gain ordinary loss treatment.
Under Section 1231 of the Internal Revenue Code, if the property is held for the long term
holding period, gain on the sale, with some exceptions, will be taxable as long term capital gain
to the extent that the gain exceeds the losses in the same year from the sale of other Section
1231 property. However, the gain will be taxable as ordinary income to the extent of recapture
income. But in the case that the sale results in a loss, it will be deductible in full as an ordinary
loss to the extent the loss exceeds Section 1231 gains from the sale of other property in the same
year. This can be a substantial advantage to the seller in a sale leaseback transaction. On the other

Edith Stein Research Paper
Early Life St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) was born on October 12, 1891 in
Berslau, Germany in a large family. She was the youngest of 11 children and was born on Yom
Kippur, the holiest day of the Hebrew calendar. In a home where her mother encouraged critical
thinking, She was a very gifted child who enjoyed learning, greatly admired her mother s strong
religious faith. Father of Edith, who ran a timber business, died when she had only just turned
two. Her mother, a very devout, hard working, strong willed and truly wonderful woman, now had
to fend for herself and to look after the family and their large business. Edith Stein from her

longer have a life of my own, she wrote at the beginning of the First World War, having done a
nursing course and gone to serve in an Austrian field hospital. When the hospital was dissolved,
in 1916, she followed Husserl as his assistant to the German city of Freiburg, after writing a thesis
on The Problem of Empathy. During this period she went to Frankfurt Cathedral and saw a
woman with a shopping basket going in to kneel for a brief prayer. This was something totally new
to me. In the synagogues and Protestant churches I had visited people simply went to the services.
Here, however, I saw someone coming straight from the busy marketplace into this empty church,
as if she was going to have an intimate conversation. It was something I never forgot.

The End Of The Cold War Essay
Abstract: This article discusses the end of the Cold War, covering the period from Reagan?s
inauguration to the reunification of Germany, which marked the end of the last remnant in Europe
of the Cold War. It looks at several factors that brought the conflict to a close: arms control, human
rights issues, and ongoing conflicts in Latin America between the Soviet Unionand the United
States. The most important meetings and summits between the United States and the Soviet Union
are discussed, including areas where negotiation failed as well as succeeded. It also analyzes the
reasons for Reagan?s embrace of negotiations with the Soviets as well as the reasons for
Gorbachev?s desire for internal reform and his openness to the West.
This article is based on the scholarship of Thomas Maddux in the Encyclopedia of Foreign Policy
(2002), and Thomas Lindenberger in Europe Since 1914: Encyclopedia of the Age of War and
Reconstruction (2006).

African American Vernacular English ( Aave )
There are several terms in my essay that I want to explain first. Dialect is a form Wang 3
of a language that is spoken in a particular area and that uses some of its own words, grammar,
and pronunciations. (Webster Dictionary) African American Vernacular English(AAVE) was
often called as Ebonics by Non linguists. The languages and dialects are noble, which should not
be separated by personal biased thought about the race, color, region, religion. However, in 1997,
a nation wide debate about Ebonics took place, which made people aware of the Black English
for the first time. The fuse of that case was the Oakland, Calif. School board, which claimed that
Ebonics was a kind of genetically based language. When they used the word genetically based , it
means that the school separated the African American students from the regular students in a biased
way by genetically reason, which like separate the black people and white people. The school even
presented their program and funds from the local government about the bilingual education for the
Ebonics students which intended to teach these English speaking students Standard English . It
showed that they didn t consider the Ebonics as a dialect of English, but a literally separated
language. The people in public made different reactions to that matter, in addition, not only the
linguists, but also the Ebonics speakers, the educators and

Drinking Bottled Water
Many people all around the globe are shifting their attention from natural drinking water and are
becoming addicted to the bottled water in the past few years. But my opinion is slight different
from these people. According to me drinking bottled water is not a good thing because it can affect
any individual s health and wealth too and it is also affecting the environment in an adverse way.
Drinking bottled watercan affect people s health in a direct or indirect way. For instance, many
plastic water bottlesare made using the chemical polyethylene terephthalate or PET and the
scientists have found that PET bottles leach a dangerous toxin called antimony into the water they

The Japanese Culture Of Japan
The Japanese are a nation with a culture influenced by many yet uniquely Japanese and connected
to their past. They retain strong ties to their early legends, religions, and traditions while continuing
to progress with the rest of the world. With these ideas that have been passed down and preserved,
there have also been forms of dance and music that have been influenced by other countries, made
uniquely Japanese, and continued through today.
The Japanese people as we know them today were not the original inhabitants of the land. The
native people, the Ainu, were hunters and fishermen closer in resemblance to Caucasians. There is
now only a small group of them residing in the Northern section of Japan. The Japanese people are
believed, based on physical characteristics as well as language, to originate from central Asia.
Movement from mainland Asia continued throughout the history of Japan and played a large role
in how their culture developed. The country consists of four large islands all of which are lush
and mountainous. The people of Japan have survived because of their developments in agriculture,
supplemented by their fishing capabilities (Morton 6). Japanese religious ideas and beliefs have a
root in Shinto, a naturalistic religion with a focus in animism. Early Shinto legends express that the
land was created by, then inhabited by the gods Izanagi and Izanami. When Izanami died while
giving birth to the Fire God, Izanagi went to the underworld to retrieve her, only

What Is The Mood Of The Banquet By Rene Magritte
In this painting, The Banquet (1958) made in oil on canvas, we can see a beautiful, but the
unfamiliar landscape with a strange red circle in the middle of the painting. This artwork was
painted by Rene Magritte with a very realistic color palette. It seems like painted with reference to
real objects: there are red, orange, blue, green, dark green, black, beige, and gray in this landscape.
In the foreground of the artwork, there is a stone wall with a stone vase. A group of trees stands on
the back of the wall, then a line and then a field of trees. The sky is covered with several tones of
red. Dark red colorwas used on each side of the painting, and lighter colors appear in the middle. In
the center of the painting is a red or orange circle... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Magritte was influenced by Romanticism and created a Surrealist art movement in Belgium. He
regarded all of art things important, and especially interested in the poetry. Through his painting,
he created the poetic imagery that can be called his own Surrealistic style. Magritte s painting
induces viewers to upend conventional thinking. Magritte spoke of this determination to make
the most familiar objects scream aloud : the more familiar the object, the louder it would scream
when divorced from its habitat, seen in a new light (qtd. in Calvocoressi 6). His painting seems
to be describing real objects, but the sense of the strange and quizzical appears when these real
objects in the background appear in the foreground, or vice versa. Either the sun appears
impossibly before the trees, on there is a hole in the forest framing the sun. This is a very different
style of art, compared with other art movements like Realism. He challenged himself to think
outside of the box and change other artist s ideas about seeing and making. Magritte s major
contribution to painting is how he defamiliarizes everyday

Essay Comparing The Parable Of The Old Man And The Young
There were similarities as well as differences found in the two works Abraham and Isaac and The
Parable of the Young and the Old . One similarity is the objects that Abram brought with him. In
both works, Abram is said to have brought fire and knife with him. Also, in both works, Isaac asks
the same question. As they arrive near the sacrificial place, Isaacasks where the lamb for the
sacrifice is. In both works, Abram bounds his son and is about to slay him when an angel speaks
out. Finally, in both stories, a ram is offered from the angel instead of Isaac. However, there are
several key differences that separate these two seemingly similar works.
The most major difference is the connotation of The Parable of the Old Man and the Young . The
entire story is a metaphor for war, as can be seen in many lines. ... Show more content on

The belts and straps that Abram used, as well as parapets and trenches, were used in World War
I. The angel calling out to Abram was not an actual angel, but that of the population s plea for

country. When Abram killed his son, he ended up killing half the seed of Europe, and perhaps
half the seed of Europe was killed in World War I. After all, if someone is killed, their
descendants will never be able to live. Even looking just at the literal meaning, there are several
key differences. In Abraham and Isaac, God is shown tempting Abraham and telling him to go to
Moriah and offer Isaac as a sacrifice. However, in The Parable of the Old Man and the Young , the
setting starts with Abram and Isaac on their journey. Also, in

Portals And The Unattainable Essay
Cara Krebb s Sehnsucht: Portals to the Unattainable I spent my childhood in a modest white
house in northern Germany. I loved my home. I loved the gleaming stone floor. I loved the
curving staircase, adorned with decorative wrought iron. I loved the narrow hallways. Best of all
was the attic. It was accessed by a small sliding door tucked behind a large wardrobe. It was my
secret place. It was my own world full of wonder and excitement. Fifteen years later, I was riding
a train to Salt Lake City reminiscing about the trains I used to take through Europe. For a
moment my home wasn t so distant. I longed. I ached. I hoped for that place again. Sadly, I
realized even if I were to return, even if I were to prance across that polished stone floor, climb
the twisted stairs, and open the sliding door once more, the attic wouldn t be the same. That
place was partially the physical locale, but mostly the imaginings of an seven year old girl. That
state of naivety of youth and wonder at the mundane could never be reclaimed, yet I still ached
for it. There is a word that Germans use for this immense desire for the unreachable or the
inconsolable longing in the human heart for we know not what; a yearning for a far, familiar, non
earthly, intangible land one can identify as one s home. Sehnsucht. That beautiful familiar word
from my German home greeted me as I walked into an exhibit at the Utah Museum of
Contemporary Art. It was the title of an exhibit located in a far corner of the

Securing A Republican Political Economy
Tom Brancato History 531E Analytic Essay 1 Securing a Republican Political Economy
Introduction American political economy was greatly shaped by the republican ideas of people
like Thomas Jefferson. It is sometimes easy to take the simplistic view of a republic to mean the
creation of a self governing group of people. As McCoy points out, To men of the eighteenth
century the creation of a republic entailed much more than simply replacing a king and hereditary
privilege with an elective system of government. Indeed, the creation of the early American
government involved the setting up of institutions and policies that would be conducive to the
forming of a republic. The term republic was more than just a system of government to... Show

I would argue that it was the combination of a republican vision supported by the tools of nation
building that was the driving force behind the establishment of the early US political economy.
The Republican Vision The republican vision was more than just a dream of self governance.
The founders were very cognizant of what it would take to maintain the republic in the long term.
As McCoy states, ...they assumed that a healthy republican government demanded an economic
and social order that would encourage the shaping of a virtuous citizenry. Founders, such as
Jefferson, felt that virtue was needed to help sustain the republic. According to Jefferson one way
to achieve virtue was creating a political economy based on land. By working on the land, one
can learn to be self reliant which would lead to a more virtuous individual. The ideas that an
agrarian life was a virtuous one was not unique to the founders. Indeed, some have noted that Adam
Smith praised agrarian life for the mental skill it developed, and warned of the dangers of industrial
labor on the mind . Surely, it couldn t have just been the mental benefit that agrarian life promised,
that motivated founders like Jefferson. The fact that England was mostly an industrial, mercantilist
economy gave credence to the desire of some of the founders to prevent the newly formed nation
from going down the

  • 2. Exploring Whether All Morality Should Reduce to Respecting... Kantian Ethics states that all morality can be reduced to respecting autonomy. This theory has faced criticisms as well as support. Its most plausible idea is that autonomous agents are capable of making their own decisions and even if their choices may not be the best for them, these choices should be respected. However, criticisms of this theory include concerns such as 1) respecting autonomyis not equivalent to respecting the autonomous agent, 2) the theory does not concern (or concerns very little) with non autonomous agents such as children and non human animals, 3) it is implausible that respecting autonomy is the only factor determining morality, and 4) respecting others autonomy does not follow from respecting one s own autonomy.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In response to this predicament, Rawls presents Contractualism, where what is right is what everyone would agree to behind a Veil of Ignorance. While behind this veil, an individual is not aware of their social class, sex, race, and any other psychological traits that may prevent one from making a fair judgement. Prioritizing autonomies while behind the Veil of Ignorance can be presumed to be fair and just. However, this theory is purely hypothetical and due to this fact, even if we can make ourselves be unaware of our social class, sex, race, and other psychological traits choices made behind the veil seem irrelevant to reality. Furthermore, agreement behind the Veil of Ignorance does not ensure that the decision is actually permissive because people may agree to a sacrifice if the probability of it happening to them is rare. For instance, people may agree to harvesting organs from healthy individuals to save a greater number of individuals but this does not mean that this act is morally permissible. I have presented how Rawls Contractualism fails to support Kantian Ethics which required prioritizing between one s own autonomy against another s. Even if the problem of conflicting autonomies were resolved, Kant s theory still faces criticisms such as the fact that the theory does not respect an individual and their decisions as much as it respects autonomy, does not efficiently discourage unequal cruelty to non autonomous agents, and does not imprint any value on ... • 3. Examples Of Self Preservation In Rashomon In Akira Kurosawa s Japanese murder mystery film, Rashomon, Akira tells the story of a slaughtered samurai. The story of the murder is revealed four times to a judge, each by a different person who witnessed the crime. Each of the stories contradicts the previous. Each of the stories has a constant of rape, murder, and the use of a dagger as the murder weapon, but each story depicts differing methods and motives. The stories seem equally plausible and the film does not disclose which of the characters is telling the truth. Each of the characters has their own agenda and a reputation to protect. In this case, all four stories were fabricated to protect the characters reputations. Especially in the era where this film takes place, reputation meant everything. All living things are susceptible... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He claims to have tricked the samurai to step off the mountain trail with him and look at an arsenal of ancient swords he had found. He then ties the samurai to the tree and returns to capture the samurai s wife, giving the impression that Tajomaru is sly and shrewd. In Tajomaru s version of the story, he entices the woman making it seem as if the woman falls in love with him. This however, is contradicted by the other stories where it is said that Tajomaru forced himself onto the woman. Out of honor and respect, Tajomaru frees the samurai and they begin to duel for the woman s love. Tajomaru tells of a valorous and honorable sword battle that ensued between the two, whereas the story of the woodcutter states that the duel was clumsy and that Tajomaru took a cheap shot at the samurai, which ultimately ended his life. He tells this embellished, spectacular story of a damsel in distress, how he is to rescue her and they are to marry and live happily ever after together, to disguise his weakness of being repulsive and a ... • 4. Justification Of John Stuart Mill Let s create an alternative world, one without liberty, and popular social customs must be followed. If one deviates from these norms, society will ostracize the person until that person conforms to the popular beliefs and values. John Stuart Mill starts off with an argument questioning to what extent the nature and limits of the power which can legitimately [exercise] by society over the individual (Mill, n.d., p. Chapter 1). So what if, the nature and limits of power of society know no bounds? This will lead us to the alternative world where libertyand conformity will be social norms. So then Mill goes on and argues that If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind (Mill, n.d., p. Chapter 2). Mill is proposing new ideas in which there are limits and justification of using that power to silencing the individual but overall believe in the freedom of expression. John Stuart Millis correct that mankind should not be justifiable in using their power to silence the individual and frankly, they have no right to, if they do silence the individual, they silence development of humanity. This is due to the harm principle, silencing of ideas, individuality, and limits of authority. First off, the harm principle introduced by Mill explains why all mankind minus one is unjustifiable to silence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main difference between the federal budget and the state and local budgets is the issue of a monetary deficit, in which expenditures in the budget exceeds revenues that were estimated. State and local governments are required to balance their budgets. The federal government is allowed to borrow money to meet its obligations and have a deficit. The federal governmentcollects the most tax revenue, but state and local governments have a greater range of revenue options for funding their budgets. The federal government relies mainly on income taxes, capital gains and Social Security taxes. • 7. Deregulation Of Advertising On Children We all love new things: jackets, shirts, shoes, smartphones and apps. Who doesn t feel good when they have the latest and the greatest thing that draws the attention and admiration of our peers? But why do we feel so good and how did we know what product was going to make us feel so good? Advertisers. The modern American child is clearly a target for companies seeking to make more and more money from kids who constantly want more and more stuff. Page, the lead guitarist, found Robert Plant and John Bonham and created a new band which would be called the New Yardbirds; they would later adopt the name Led Zeppelin. The main goal they wanted to achieve was to emphasize the guitar, which they accomplished Plant, the singer, had a peculiar voice, raspy with many vocal ranges that he did not know when to hold back his voice. Not only was he capable of jaw dropping power and velocity, but he also deftly incorporated evocative percussion elements which added texture and shading. (Led Zeppelin ). The drummer, John Bonham, was a fast drummer who kept perfect time. Led Zeppelin effected music in multiple ways, such as changing the idea of rock music by creating a blueprint for heavy metal musicand by influencing the styles of many people. The reason I chose this piece is because of the colors and drawing techniques used, as well as the balance of the overall piece. The piece is a dark hued painting (oil on canvas) made in the 1650s, depicting a very stormy sea with small sailboats in the background. The foreground consists of two men standing on a jetty that has a pole like wooden structure standing on it; the two men appear to be conversing, probably about the storm. The painting is asymmetrical because if you cut it down the middle vertically then one side would have the wooden pole, most of the jetty and the two men in it, while the other side would have virtually nothing except some distant (almost obscure) sailboats, part of the jetty and a distant smaller jetty. The painting is unified by its theme: A stormy sea by a jetty. The waves are painted so as to show them crashing into one another by painting the caps white and using bold curves to emphasize the choppiness of the sea. The dark clouds in the background are a testament to the severity of the storm. The emphasis is on the jetty and men in the foreground. The costs and efficiency of different dispute resolution mechanisms vary from time to time and place to place. Nonetheless, there have been recurrent complaints from commercial users, as well as individuals, about the delays and expenses imposed by many national court systems.. In considering the relative cost and speed of international arbitration versus litigation, it is important to take into account the likelihood of jurisdictional disputes and parallel proceedings. Suppose Japanese and a French company enter into a long term sales agreement, which leads to disputes. Assuming there is no agreement to arbitrate such disputes, what is likely to occur after efforts to amicably settle the disputes fail? To validate the assumption, we can plot the residuals versus the fitted values to see if there are any indications of signs of random distributions. For the residual plot, we see there are no indications or violations of random distribution and can calculate the MSE of the model, which is 3111.265. Perhaps she felt she was raising consciousness and expressing solidarity of a sort. Her remarks in her interview with Peter Orr about making her poetry relevant can be looked at from such an angle. Of course, the other point of view is that she was stealing other people s real tragedy and tacking it on to her own little psychic turbulence for shock value and good visceral punch to the reader s gut. I think we must always keep in mind that Plath, to A. Alvarez, referred to this poem (and Lady Lazarus , a piece even more riddled with Holocaust imagery) as a bit of light verse. These refrigerants accelerate the depletion of the Earth s ozone layer. Therefore, adsorption air conditioning technology attracted much attention recently as an alternative solution due to its advantage of environmental friendliness. This system as it powered by waste and/or solar heatcan help to reduce required energyand thermal pollution. This paper presents an overview of research which have been carried out on adsorption cooling systems powered by waste heat from automobiles. Many adsorption pairs have been studied. Zeolite water as a working adsorption pair has been widely used in automobile adsorption cooling systems. This pair has been powered by exhaust gases from the engine due to its relatively high working temperature. Silica gel water pair has been also widely used in automobile adsorption cooling systems. It has been powered by waste heat from water coolant in the engine due to its relatively low working temperature. Results show that this technology can help in increasing overall engine efficiency and reduce thermal pollution from engines. Various modifications in adsorption cooling systems are still required. Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820, which tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a schoolmaster who persistently frightens himself with supernatural beings he supposes he sees and hears on his way home from school. At one point in the story, Crane rivals for the love of a lady with a man named Abraham Van Brunt. This man, known as Brom Bones to the townspeople, took advantage of Ichabod Cranes credulousness to scare him out of town through a prank in which he impersonated the dreaded Headless Horseman, the ghost of Sleepy Hollow. This isn t the case for 10 15% of the cats throughout the country (Cornell). Feline infectious peritonitis is an unusual disease that affects cats, and even ferrets, which proves fatal in the majority of cases. Feline infectious peritonitis, or FIP, is a viral disease that is caused by certain strains of the feline coronavirus (Cornell). Some cats may either show mild upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge (Cornell). Others may show intestinal symptoms like diarrhea (Cornell). Ultimately, only a small percentage of cats exposed to the feline coronavirus develop FIP, and even then it may take weeks, months, or even years until symptoms are shown (Cornell). Since there are two different types of feline infectious peritonitis, different symptoms will be shown on the basis of whether or not the cat has wet or dry FIP. Cats that have non effusive FIP often show signs more slowly than those with effusive. These symptoms will include weight loss, fever that does not respond to antibiotics, depressions, and anemia (Cornell). One of the characteristics of effusive FIP is the accumulation of fluid, normally in the abdomen and sometimes in the chest. This large amount of fluid may cause the cat to become pot bellied. Dissonance theory explains how people go about decreasing negative arousal caused by a mismatch of their attitudes and behavior. Aronson and Carlsmith conducted a study in which two groups of kids were asked to leave a not play with a toy, and then left alone with it. Only one group of kids were told there would a consequence if they played with the toy. Kids from both groups left the toy alone, but the kids in the non consequence group did not play with the toy even when they were told they could. This was because they changed their attitude to explain why they hadn t played with the toy to decrease dissonance caused by a mismatch in attitude and behavior. The second group did not need to do this, as they had a sufficient external reason to leave the toy alone. When Eliza wants to stop Chris could simply ask her to keep going. Since her father did not suggest a consequence she is unlikely to attribute her behavior to his request. This creates dissonance as her attitudes would suggest that she would not have continued to go to soccer, yet she went anyway. Ziad Jawadi International Relations: Gabe Scheinmann 4/12/11 Why is Iran Arming: An Examination of a Nuclear Iran through International Relations Theory A nuclear Iran may be inevitable within the next decade. There is ample evidence suggesting that Iran has the intention and capability of obtaining nuclear weapons. According to Fox News, a new document issued by the Department of Defense on the Iran nuclear threat states: Iran could probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States by 2015. Clark Abt, professor at Harvard University, estimates that a single nuclear attack on a major US harbor, such as New York City or Washington DC, could cause a loss of one million civilians and could create three trillion dollars of economic losses. In order to identify the necessary steps to avert Iran from procuring nuclear weapons and thus preventing possible nuclear attacks, it is crucial to understand why Iran seeks to arm in the first place. It is profusely clear that International relations theories provide an insight into why Iran aspires to develop a nuclear program. However, upon further examination, only the realist and identity, not the liberal, theories in international relations can further our knowledge of this issue. Amongst the numerous reasons for Iran s desire to have nuclear weapons is the innate insecurity and fear of possible attacks by the neighboring countries and their allies. An illustration ... • 36. Romanticism, By Charles Baudelaire Romanticism is an artistic revolt that originated in Europe in the 18th century. It rejected the rationalism, logical thinking, and societal norms associated with the Age of Enlightenment. Rather, it embraced ideals that came out of the French Revolution. The works of art focused on promoting free thinking and provoking feeling from its viewers. To further explain Romanticism, poet and critic Charles Baudelaire once wrote that romanticism is precisely situated neither in choice of subject nor in exact truth, but in way of feeling. Various paintings throughout the 18th and 19th century helped to define this time in art history. During the Romanticism era, it was through the emphasis on emotion, freedom, and the everyday life that the Romantic principles of the sublime and the picturesque were expressed. One of the various themes present in Romanticism is emotion. A major part of the Romanticism movement was placing focus on emotion as opposed to reason. In paintings where a central theme is emotion, artists use the sublimity and picturesque aspects of nature to symbolize feeling or convey a narrative. In The Lady of Shalott (1888) by John William Waterhouse, the subject of the painting is a woman, sitting alone in a boat. It takes inspiration from a scene from a poem of the same name by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The poem tells the story of the young woman and her unrequited love for Sir Lancelot. The lease will be recorded as an asset and capitalized, and the obligation to make the future lease payments will be shown as a liability. The seller loses the flexibility associated with property ownership, such as changing or discontinuing the use of the property or modifying a building. The sale leaseback often restricts the seller s right to transfer the leasehold interest, and even if possible, generally it is more difficult to dispose of a leasehold interest than a fee ownership interest. Also, if a seller wants to improve the leased property, it may be difficult to obtain financing secured by a leasehold interest. Moreover, the leasehold may contain provisions that prohibit the seller from mortgaging the leasehold interest. Because the property involved in a sale leaseback generally is held for use in the seller s trade or business, it qualifies for capital gain ordinary loss treatment. Under Section 1231 of the Internal Revenue Code, if the property is held for the long term holding period, gain on the sale, with some exceptions, will be taxable as long term capital gain to the extent that the gain exceeds the losses in the same year from the sale of other Section 1231 property. However, the gain will be taxable as ordinary income to the extent of recapture income. But in the case that the sale results in a loss, it will be deductible in full as an ordinary loss to the extent the loss exceeds Section 1231 gains from the sale of other property in the same year. It was accessed by a small sliding door tucked behind a large wardrobe. It was my secret place. It was my own world full of wonder and excitement. Fifteen years later, I was riding a train to Salt Lake City reminiscing about the trains I used to take through Europe. For a moment my home wasn t so distant. I longed. I ached. • 52. Securing A Republican Political Economy Tom Brancato History 531E Analytic Essay 1 Securing a Republican Political Economy Introduction American political economy was greatly shaped by the republican ideas of people like Thomas Jefferson. It is sometimes easy to take the simplistic view of a republic to mean the creation of a self governing group of people. As McCoy points out, To men of the eighteenth century the creation of a republic entailed much more than simply replacing a king and hereditary privilege with an elective system of government. Indeed, the creation of the early American government involved the setting up of institutions and policies that would be conducive to the forming of a republic. The term republic was more than just a system of government to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would argue that it was the combination of a republican vision supported by the tools of nation building that was the driving force behind the establishment of the early US political economy. The Republican Vision The republican vision was more than just a dream of self governance. The founders were very cognizant of what it would take to maintain the republic in the long term. As McCoy states, ...they assumed that a healthy republican government demanded an economic and social order that would encourage the shaping of a virtuous citizenry. Founders, such as Jefferson, felt that virtue was needed to help sustain the republic. According to Jefferson one way to achieve virtue was creating a political economy based on land. By working on the land, one can learn to be self reliant which would lead to a more virtuous individual. The ideas that an agrarian life was a virtuous one was not unique to the founders. Indeed, some have noted that Adam Smith praised agrarian life for the mental skill it developed, and warned of the dangers of industrial labor on the mind . Surely, it couldn t have just been the mental benefit that agrarian life promised, that motivated founders like Jefferson. The fact that England was mostly an industrial, mercantilist economy gave credence to the desire of some of the founders to prevent the newly formed nation from going down the ... The hypothesis indicates that the researchers were interested in testing for differences in groups. The Sample It was estimated that registering 226 children would have provided 80% of power to discover a 20 percentage of point difference in the number of children rehydrated for two hours. After the start of treatment, there was two sided given type I error with a possibility of 0.05 and a 40% success rate within standard group. As a result, the calculation involved a 5% alteration for losses to pursue including withdrawals, and missing data. Data Collection The data was developed by SBF with supervised study as well as the manuscript was conscripted and underwritten. SBF, PCP, SS were responsible for study concept and design. SBF, ARW, and Derek Stephens were responsible for statistical analysis. SBF and SS provided administrative, technical, or material support.
