Ruth J. Abram, who wanted to create a museum centered upon an experience common to the
majority of Americans, founded the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Abram believed that the
immigrant experience was something that diverse groups of people could relate to and unite
together on, moving Americans to participate in a national conversation with similarly situated,
contemporary immigrants and other outsiders (Abram 2005:21). As we can see, Abram has been
dedicated from the start to civic engagement through community collaboration.
Abram continually ensures that the museum has the resources and insight needed for community
engagement. This is done in several ways. For instance, Abram and the Board of Trustees are

In 1943 two men, Martin and Bell discovered a gene condition called Fragile X Syndrome. 2
Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a genetic condition, which may cause an intellectual disability,
behavioural and learning difficulties and various other physical characterstics.1 It occurs when the
female gene (X gene) is repeated over 50 200 times, this is called Fragile X permutation. 1 In
1969, Herbert Lubs established the chromosomal test for Fragile X Syndrome. Fragile X Syndrome

On the tour of the Jewish museum, we discussed the idea of what the voids and gaps throughout the
museum are to symbolize to the visitors. When the tour guide asked the group what do these voids

Roy uses this to reinforce the idea of a circular plot structure, where the characters are unable to
break free of the cycle. Estha tried to protect Rahel from losing her innocence once the
Orangedrink Lemondrink man molested him, but he was unable to, and as a result the twins end
up having sex at the end of the novel. However, in his novel The Kite Runner Khaled Hosseini
portrays Amir as unable to save Hassan from the rape that takes place, and instead shows Amir
protecting Sohrab, Hassan s son, who was also raped by the same person.
CONCLUSION: In both novels, Arundhati Roy and Khaled Hosseini took careful consideration
when conveying their message to readers. They both utilize similar story plots, plot structure, and
symbols that represent similar meanings. As an author, Khaled Hosseini clearly describes Amir s
journey and his reactions to specific events throughout the novel, crafting his responses in clever
ways. Arundhati Roy also employs the same technique in her novel, choosing to use a similar plot
structure, but having the characters react differently to the scenarios they face. Amir, for example,
chooses to take control of his future not allowing his past to affect his decisions, and thus Hosseini
