Functional Genomic Analysis of C. elegans Using RNA...
Introduction
Before we talk about this important experiment, do you know what a nematode is?
Specifically, this experiment used Caenorhabditis elegans, C. elegans for short. C. elegans is a little
worm (just like the kind you find in the ground), but has a very special place in modern biochemistry:
scientists have mapped its entire genomic sequence.
This sequence lets scientists know the character and location of all C. elegans genes. However,
biochemists do not yet fully understand what each gene does and the goal of this experiment is to find
the function of each gene within the worm. The connection between a worm s genotype and
phenotype is important, because, believe it or not, human beings and worms share many of the same ...

All eukaryotic cells get their genetic information from DNA, which are strands of nucleotides whose
order conveys genetic information to the cell. Structurally, DNA looks like a ladder. A DNA strand is
made up of a sugar phosphate backbone (similar to the sides of a ladder, alternating sugar and
phosphate) and is connected in the middle with paired purines and pyrimidines (fancy names for four
chemicals that make up the steps of the ladder). Scientists refer to the distinctive shape of DNA as a
double helix.
DNA replication is necessary for organisms to stay alive and reproduce. When cells replicate, the
DNA must also be copied so the daughter cells contain the genetic information necessary to perform
key chemical reactions. Cells have machinery that read the information in DNA and use these
instructions to make proteins. To make proteins, the DNA must first unwind in order to be read. This
small section is then replicated to form a single stranded RNA strand. The RNA strand then forms
what is called messenger RNA or simply mRNA. The mRNA is used to make the proteins the cell
needs.
In some viruses, however, the genetic material is double stranded RNA (known as dsRNA), rather
than DNA. These viruses inject their dsRNA into a host s cell. The

It seems like every week we hear about thousands and thousands of people losing their jobs. Back in
the 1980s most of the job losses were in the blue collar sector. In the 1990s it seems many of the cuts
were made in the white collar, management jobs. Why? Think about it. Technology, to a large extent,
has driven organizations to change the way they operate and that includes the way they manage. We re
going to take an in depth look at how organizations work and how they ve been transformed by
technology on the world stage.
Information systems are the foundation for conducting business today. In many industries, survival
and even existence is difficult without extensive use of information technology. No longer can we
imagine going to work and conducting business without them. As a society we have come to rely
extensively on the use of information appliances such as cell phones, BlackBerrys, handhelds, and
other hardware. Communicating and conducting business is increasingly being carried out through the
use of e mail, online conferencing, and international teleconferencing over the Internet have all
become essential tools of business.

Education at a Year-Round School Essay
Education at a Year Round School
Consider the following situation: A car is driving past the local elementary school on a hot and sunny
July afternoon. As the car approached the school the driver notices some unusual things. Students are
outside with the teachers for recess, and it looks as if school is in session. The school is on a year
round schedule. The driver is intrigued and decides to do some research. From the research, this
person found that students are achieving more academically and the teachers are well rested.
Year round schooling is beneficial to school systems because: it alleviates overcrowding, offers
remedial opportunities, decreases teacher burnout, increases retention rates, assists English as a

Each track of students is staggered throughout the year so that each group is attending the school at
different times. For example, a school that has 1000 students could rotate them into five groups of 200
students each. Using a multi track schedule also decreases the need for construction of new schools.
According to Rivera, of the Washington Post (2003): when employing a multi track schedule, 25
percent more students can attend year round schools, without added construction (para. 8).
(9)Additionally, Barber (1996) adds that The Soccoro Independent School District, in Texas, saved 30
million dollars of tax payer money by using a multi track schedule (para. 4). One result of
overcrowding is a lack of personal assistance.
Remediation
Students are struggling in school and need extra remediation. All too often in schools who run on a
traditional school calendar, students do not receive the help they need until summer school. By that
point it is too late and the student is failing academically. Robert Smotherman, superintendent of
Bardstown City School District in Kentucky (as quoted by Wildavsky (1999)) says, Instead of waiting
until summer school, you catch him [student] in October, and you ve got a shot at getting him back on
track (para. 8). Students who attend year round schools have the benefit of receiving remediation help

The Day With The Patients Of Regent Care
On February 5, 2016, I had the privilege to spend the day with the patients of Regent Care. I was
accompanied by my classmates from the Communication Disorders program. As I walked into the
facilities cafeteria we gathered around the round tables. As we waited for instructions our professor
gave us an overview of what we were expected to do. There were big squared plastic bins that were
filled with different kinds of supplies. As we assisted our peers get the supplies out of the bin we
began to separate and organize the supplies by activities. We began by cleaning the round tables with
water. After they were dry we began setting up the different stations. There were about five activities
which included getting their nails done, decorating a picture frame, decorating a bag, painting figures
as arts and crafts and bowling. There was an elderly woman sitting by herself in one of the round
tables looking at us set up the activities. I approached her by asking her if she wanted to decorate a
bag. She looked at me with a smile and said, si, claro con gusto. I opened the package of fabric
painted and lined up the paint in front of her where she was able to reach all five colors. As I called
out each color she told me her favorite color was green. I asked what she wanted to write or draw on
the bag, but she replied by saying, yo no se. Yo no puedo pensar. I was saddened to hear her say she
was not capable of thinking. I encouraged her by saying, let s write your name! she

What Are The Two Important Quotes From Huckleberry Finn
Peter would dive through the air, and catch Michael just before he could strike the sea, and it was
lovely the way he did it; but he always waited till the last moment, and you felt it was his cleverness
that interested him and not the saving of human life. (pg.46).
Context:
Wendy narrated this event when her brothers and Peter were flying over a ocean. Wendy said the
quote after Peter flew down to get Michael who has fallen asleep while flying and almost hit the water.
Commentary: This observation by Wendy still applies to people today, because many many time,
humans has done things for our own entertainment instead for the greater good. Peter saving Micheal
from falling into the ocean and dying, to Peter it is just a game. And even ... Show more content on

Context: This phrase comes from the narrator of the story. After she read one final story to Peter and
the Lost Boys, Wendy will soon departure and leave Neverland. Even though the narrator voiced this
phrase as a summary to Wendy s story, but also provided the readers with something very truthful.
Commentary:
This quote really sums up humans flaws and sins. No matter what time period, humans have always
been selfish and yet wanting. Even though the statement expressed those qualities as what children do,
but all humans of all ages can be held accountable for being like what was said in the quote. Everyday
we can see people being self centered, egocentric, and yet they still want people to love them and care
for them. In Peter Pan you can see these traits many times through out the story.
Artistic Quote: While she stitched a change came to the lagoon. Little shivers ran over it, and the sun
went away and shadows stole across the water, turning it cold. when she looked up, the lagoon that
had always hitherto been such a laughing place seemed formidable and unfriendly... (pg.96).

The Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka
It can be hard to understand the meaning of the novella The Metamorphosis, written by Franz Kafka,
without thinking of the background. Due to the fact that, using and knowing [the] background
knowledge of a story is important to read a text (Freebody and Luke). In the novella The
metamorphosis , Kafka s personal history has been artfully [expressed] (Classon 82). The novella was
written in 1916, before the World War 1 in German {Research}. When the novella was written, in the
Europe, preemption of human has kick started through homogeneity of the object. Moreover, owing to
development of IT technology, people can live much more convenient life rather than the past.
According to the theory of Alvin Toffler, as the first wave of agriculture society has arrived to the
second wave of industry society, economy has developed rapidly {research}. This change makes life
more comfortable and affluent. Before the World War 1, the industrial revolution had broken out and it
drastically altered the economies and social hierarchies of Europe (Classon 12). Owing to industrial
revolution and industrialization, as people could accumulate worth, people put accumulation of worth
ahead of everything. Furthermore, as labor became important and precious, people have been regarded
as the medium for development of industrial. Therefore, human alienation and capitalism have been
overflowed. In the novella The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka criticizes human alienation which is

Youth Incarceration Research Paper
The Incarceration of Juveniles It is estimated that on any given day there are 80,000 youth
incarcerated in the United States, which is more than any other developed country in the
world(Townes, 1). Incarcerating youth before exploring other options is a social injustice. Judges
rather give short term solutions than permanently fix the problem. To understand why this is a social
injustice, four pieces of information must be known: the causes, who it affects and how, who s
responsible, and solutions in place. Incarcerating youth affects them in many different ways. One way
is the psychiatric damage prisons cause. Being in prison means that the child is not able to be with
their family and community, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. Studies show
that incarcerated youth die from suicide at a rate two to three times more than non incarcerated youths
(Polish,1). In addition to mental health effects, incarceration at a young age affects the person s future
by lowering their chances of finding a job. When sentenced to a correctional facility, the child s
education is stopped and they become 38 times more likely to become a repeat offender(Koehler,1).
With no education and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lack of resources is one of the major causes of high juvenile incarceration rates. Without alternative
programs prison is the only option. Another major fact is improper evaluations. Improper evaluations
lead to children, who are considered non public threats, being thrown in jail. Roughly 25% of youth
behinds bar are actually considered threats which means the remaining are considered non threatening
(Townes, 2). In addition, improper evaluations lead to youth with mental illnesses being placed behind
bars and not receiving medical attention. It s known that 65 to 70% of youth behind bars have a
disability, yet barley anything has been done to help them obtain the help they need(Townes,

The Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus Essay
The stories of Icarus and Prometheus are two famous Greek myths, having been portrayed in many
types of media by various renowned artists like Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Lord George Gordon
Byron respectively. The two stories are portrayed in painting and poem form respectively. Both also
tell the stories in a different way by emphasizing some points and overshadowing others to illustrate
their message. Bruegel uses his lack of focus towards the misfortune of Icarus to illustrate that the
suffering or misfortune of one is easily missed or ignored by others, while Byron uses his
magnification of Prometheus suffering in order to illustrate that suffering for a righteous cause is
noble and good. In Bruegel s painting, The Landscape with the Fall of Icarus , he depicts a beautiful
day with a farmer plowing his field, a shepherd herding his sheep, a fisherman ... Show more content

However, hiding in the bottom right corner is a pair of legs, which belong to Icarus who is drowning.
The way that Bruegel tries to downplay and hide the drowning of Icarus by putting him in the
background instead of having Icarus being the main subject in the picture illustrates his message, that
suffering and misfortune of other people are often missed and ignored by others. On the other hand,
Byron, with his poem, Prometheus , writes about the glorious deeds of Prometheus and how
Prometheus is punished unjustly. Byron uses phrases like [a]ll the proud can feel of pain and [o]f thine
impenetrable spirit in order to highlight the glorious suffering and perseverance Prometheus (8, 42).
The spirit of martyrdom is clearly seen in this poem when Byron puts in his poem and making Death a
Victory, as martyrs die for a cause which makes their deaths a victory (59). Byron illustrates his
message, that sacrificing yourself for a just cause is a terrific thing to do, by glorifying the suffering of

Bail Laws ( Nsw )
Bail laws (NSW)
Bail has always been part of the common law system. In NSW, they have based their concept from the
Statue of Westminster I (1275), where there are different categories that separates who are to be bailed
or refused bail, which had become part of the Bail Act 1978 (NSW) and was enforced from March
1980. Bail Act 2013 (NSW) is the only other law that replaced Bail Act 1978 (NSW), but was
amended by Bail Amendment Act 2014 (NSW), which is the final replacement coming into full effect
in 28th January 2015.
In Section 4 of the Bail Act 1978, it states that authorisation to be at liberty under this Act, instead of
in custody . This is otherwise known as bail, the act of permitting a person to a brief period of freedom
who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the prosecution can provide sufficient reasoning of why bail cannot be granted, the assumption of
bail can be revoked.
Serious drug related offences can also disprove the presumption for bail and (likewise towards
aggressive offences) the accused must reason why bail should be permitted.
Issue and effect on individuals and society
Prior to 28th January 2015, bail laws posed significant loopholes in the system and are deemed to be
ineffective to achieve justice. Accused offenders may get away with bail based with evidence in the
case if it does not seem to pose a threat to the community. The problem persists within the conditions
set for their bail, as responsibility lies upon the magistrate or police to impose appropriate conditions.
However, though conditions do vary, it possesses a significant risk if the conditions enforced were not
strict enough, opening vulnerabilities for the accused to commit another crime, slipping through their
enforced conditions.
Yet not enough has been done to alert the community of this flaw, which thus continued to believe that
the criminal law system is protecting them. Effects are potentially dangerous, as individuals would
face the growing rate of criminal activity and with limited policing resources, not everyone ensured to
be protected in an unsafe suburban environment. If this issue continued to remain unresolved in the
long term, it would slowly corrupt society values, with more individuals

Is There A, Narcissism Epidemic, Among Contemporary Young...
The issue for the last critique article is, Is there a Narcissism Epidemic among contemporary young
adults? Yes I do believe that there is a narcissism epidemic among young adults. I am a young adult as
we speak, and being a young adult I started to change, and recognize my behavioral had shift gear to a
whole another dimension, which it all started when I started my freshman year in college. Jean M.
Twenge argues that The Age of Anxiety? Birth Cohort Change in Anxiety and Neuroticism, 1952

analyses examining self reports of anxiety and neuroticism. Jean M. Twenge finding demonstrate that
both college students and schoolchildren report increases in these characteristic. Her suggestion was
low social connectedness and environmental threats are responsible for these changes. I feel as though
this is agreeable because I think all college students come to college with anxiety and neuroticism, and
reasons because of low social connectedness, and environmental threat. Social connectedness model
focuses on social exclusion as particularly important to anxiety. When you exclude that social
connectedness, it then becomes a lack of connection in a society, may produce alienation and feeling
of loneliness and despair. Environmental threat connects the same way. Environmental threat is
basically violent crime, the nuclear war, fear of diseases such as AIDS, and the entrance of women

Evidence Of The Big Bang Cosmology
The second evidence of the Big Bang is the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is the
electromagnetic radiation left over from the time of recombination in Big Bang cosmology. It
represents the first light that travelled in the universe, at the time when the first atoms were formed
and the universe was transparent. The scientists Alpher and Hermann deduced that before the
recombination epoch, everything was plasma and the light rays would be continually scattered by the
particles they encountered (protons, neutrons, electrons), because many particles were charged.
During the recombination period, (around 300,000 years after the Big Bang, time taken from the
universe to cool down to 3,000 degrees Kelvin), the universe had cooled sufficiently ... Show more

COBE s measurements also provided another key of evidence of the Big Bang: the CMB has a near
perfect black body spectrum. an object with a constant temperature that absorbs all radiation that hits
it
A blackbody spectrum is produced by an isothermal, opaque and non reflecting object. Because of the
universality of the blackbody spectrum, it is possible to convert any spectral measurement into a
brightness temperature at the measured wavelength. The unique character of a blackbody spectrum is
that the brightness temperature of a blackbody is the same at all wavelengths (this is why every
wavelength in the CMB is 1 mm).
Furthermore, in order to make a blackbody spectrum, an object has to be opaque, non reflective and
isothermal. Thus a star, which is opaque, does not produce it because it has cooler outer layers and
hotter deeper layers. Thus the universe should have been a dark (since photons weren t free to escape),
non reflecting and isothermal plasma. (10)
Even though the temperature of the universe changes as it evolves, it looks isothermal because the
redshifting of radiation makes the universe appear to have exactly the same temperature as

Was it a coincidence that the character, King Lear, was similar to King James. Most people think it

Shakespeare s King Lear, is the story The Mirror for Magistrates, by Higgins. Shakespeare plagiarized

both discussed the title page, or the First Folio. The side that has stated that King Lear was a satire,
mentioned that Shakespeare was humiliating King James because he saw a play that was clearly about
him. They also said that Shakespeare changing the title, King Lear, was to teach James about his
terrible attitude. The people that are saying it is not a satire, mentioned that Shakespeare was just
trying to honor is lovely king, by putting him on the title page. They also stated that Shakespeare
changing the title to King Lear was just his own personal touch. There are also differences between
the two sides. The people who are saying that King Lear was a satire, indicated that Lear and James
both had similar attitudes, because they were rude to other people and would cut them off completely

My Trip to Saint Petersburg Dali Museum
For our assigned cultural exposure I chose to visit the Saint Petersburg Dali Museum. I drove over on
a windy day across the causeway in a Jeep that is less than running well, so by the time I found the
museum I was a bit relieved. I had wanted to go to the Museum since moving here in early 2011 but
have just never made the time. I lived in southern Spain for several years and one of the few regrets I
have from my time there is that I never made it to the museum there.
Upon my arrival and paying my admission fee I was informed that there was a guided tour about to
begin. I hurried up the stairs and filled in the back of the pack. There are about 30 35 other patrons
there as well. The guide starts with a brief history of Dali s early life growing up in southeastern
Spain, the death of his mother and his fathers remarrying of Dali s aunt (which he commemorated in a
painting), to his marring to the Famous Gala. The guide then informed us that it was Gala who helped
to manage Dali s career acting as his agent. Not only was his love for Gala shown in his art but also
her tenacity reflected in several of the pieces on display featuring her.
Several of the paintings on display this year either in the Morse Family collection or on loan to the
museum were discussed on the tour to included a painting Dali did about the age of 15 after his
mothers passing and his fathers marring his deceased wife s sister. The painting was done to
commemorate the occasion and even at 15 his skills as

Our True Nationality Is Mankind
Our true nationality is mankind. ― H.G. Wells
Today, the scourge of nationalism continues to infect humanity. Without doubt, in some circles,
nationalism is hotly debated. For most people, however, the concept of nationalism is rarely
questioned. In fact, it s a foregone conclusion that people should love the nation in which they reside.
Some people even take great pride in the fact that they were arbitrarily born in a specific geographical
location. Unfortunately, like religion or capitalism, nationalism is alive and well in the 21st century.
Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been creating, critiquing and altering
institutions. For instance, people have been condemning religion for centuries, indeed millennia. Yet
the institution of religion still remains a dominant force in modern society. Without question, religious
institutions and practices have morphed, dare I say, evolved, over the centuries. But the fundamental
concept that human beings exist within an abstract framework of Gods, mythologies, symbols, and so
forth, still remains.
In short, it takes an extremely long time to change ideologies and practices. On the other hand, that
doesn t mean conversations about such topics should be off limits or discouraged. Quite the contrary:
such conversations are essential, especially today. As the legendary science fiction writer Ursula K. Le
Guin recently said, We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of

The Importance Of The First Amendment In The United States...
The United States Constitution was written in 1787 in Philadelphia to establish the national
government and guaranteed certain basic rights for citizens (History.com). Over the years, we added
new amendments but never considered changing the current amendments. Now is the time to look at
changing some of them to make it safer for us as citizens and to make our country a better place.
People have looked over the amendments and want some change. This paper will give you the people
a good look on why and how we could make the amendment better. My first amendment I want to
consider changing is the 2nd amendment the right to bear arms. This amendment was created to allow
anybody have and carry guns. I believe it should be changed because of all the gun problems we have
had including 9/11, and different other terrorist attacks. My reasoning on why this needs to happen is
simple, public terror is not protected under the Constitution (Feinblatt). Some lawmakers have
considered that open carry is threating public safety. Now because it is legal in some states, open carry
activists take full advantage of the loophole in the 2nd amendment, which typically operates past the
limits of the law (Feinblatt). Until we close the open carry loophole in our laws the armed intimidation
will continue to serve as a strategy for more activists in our cities and towns (Feinblatt). All the
problems that the U.S has explained why some states sensibly and constitutionally reject the open
carry

Rhetorical Analysis Of Games By Steve Johnson
If you put yourself in an environment with lots of different perspectives, you yourself are going to
have better, sharper, more original ideas, stated Steve Johnson in an interview with Salon Media

knowledge of other perspectives. Also, the new ideas will encourage debate and conversation. Not
only will other people s views enhance ideas, but also is crucial for writing on a topic. Acknowledging
opposing perspectives will give a writer more authority on the subject being discussed. Also, it gives
the audience an opportunity to respect an author. In Steve Johnson s essay, Games, he builds authority

already showing he has done his research and writes about Dr. Spock and what he must say about
video games (196). Afterwards, Johnson introduces another source he has studied, this time about
reading, written by Andrew Solomon (197). Both studies Johnson introduces shows he has researched
both video games and reading. Later in his piece, Johnson writes, When I read these ostensibly
positive accounts of video games... (200). Johnson is showing the audience he is analyzing video
games for himself by reading about them and the actual content of the games. Concluding his piece,
he states that video games can be hard (Johnson 201). This statement implies Johnson has played
video games himself, otherwise he would be contradicting himself of what he says in the context. He
talks about the gap between people who have or have not played them. People who have not played
them cannot talk about them coherently (201). Therefore, Johnson must have played video games and

characteristics are showed in this text through what they said. There are two themes that are related to

social standard. Some comparisons can be made between them and Eva Smith by showing the

animal and belongs to the phylum Cnidaria and the class Hydrozoa. A hydra has a simple body plan,
this is common because animals like this have a digestive compartment with a single opening this

Grasshoppers differ from hydras because they are animals who contain a alimentary canal. An
alimentary canal is a complete digestive tract, consisting of a tube running between a mouth and an
anus (Reese G 2). When an animal has a alimentary canal it allows the to ingest food while earlier
meals are still being digested, a feat that is likely to be difficult or inefficient for an animal with a
gastrovascular cavity (Reese 900). There are many features to an alimentary canal, most of which
include accessory glands which also include salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder. The
salivary glands are in charge of lubricating the food and moistening the mouth, it s also produces
amylase which is an enzyme to help break down carbohydrates. Also in the alimentary canals the food
gets pushed by a process called peristalsis. There are also sphincters, which regulate the passage of

Analysis Of On Chesil Beach
All three texts present very different views on marriage. On Chesil Beach presents a picture of a
nervous young couple on the first night of their honeymoon, where although both are inexperienced,
they seem to be in love. Whereas, in The Merchants Tale , we have an old hoor man, desperate for a
young wife to present him with an heir. On the other hand, Romeo and Juliet is a play about the
marriage of two lovers; this view is idealised and has for centuries been perceived as the perfect view
of a relationship.
The Merchants Tale s narrator is the Merchant who has been married for a little over two months.
According to Stephanie A. Tolliver, critics have painted him as a disillusioned man full of hatred and
contempt . His marriage is a disaster and therefore we are presented with a bitter view on the story of
Januarie and May. The poem is a tale within a tale and we are given three perspectives in all. Chaucer,
the poet, The Merchant the omniscient narrator and the protagonists Januarie, May and Damyan. The
view of marriage presented in the tale is a very negative one with the wives being at fault. Many have
called the tale to be anti feminist and critics have discussed the negative presentation of May
throughout the centuries. In On Chesil Beach the relationship of a newlywed couple is represented
through the use of the third person. Both Florence and Edward believed that the promise of marriage
would bring them what they most desired, Their marriage, they

Kevlar Leather Jacket Pros And Cons
Introduction
In the decades since I first climbed on top of a motorcycle, I have seen a lot of changes. Riding
partners have come and gone, laws have evolved, and the public s perception of bikers has, thankfully,
improved. The biking community is in a state of perpetual change, just like the world around it, but
one thing remains constant: leather jackets. Both stylish and secure, leather has been relied upon by
bikers throughout history to keep them safe from the elements and protect them during falls and
crashes.
The leather jacket is as synonymous with motorcycles as two wheels and an engine, but an increasing
number of bikers are leaving behind their leather jackets in favor of alternatives of a different material,
such as mesh or Kevlar. Some readers may be unfamiliar with the latter, which hasn t received as
much publicity as some other protective materials, but if Kevlar motorcycle jackets can gain global
attention, it is quite possible they can dethrone their leather opponents.
But what exactly does a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leather jackets tend to offer very poor ventilation, even when they are fitted with mesh vents. If you
live in a cold climate, this likely won t be a problem, but those who attempt to ride in a leather
motorcycle jacket during warmer months will be putting themselves at risk of heat stroke.
Cruel
As the world becomes increasingly more mindful, the cruelty associated with leather jackets becomes
a bigger and bigger problem. Leather, as most of us know but do our best to ignore, is made from the
skin of animals, most commonly cows. Killing animals for the sake of clothing is, admittedly, pretty
horrendous, and many animal loving bikers have moved on to textile motorcycle jackets while
actively campaigning against leather protective equipment.

The earthquake affected nearly one third of the country s total population which was three million

of sufficient supplies and was exacerbated in the capital by the escape of several thousand prisoners

The onset of decay forced the interment of many bodies in mass graves, and recovery of those buried

Pros And Cons Of Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte was a powerful leader who established the foundations of modern Europe
through an administration riddled with controversy. Napoleon came to power in 1799 by overthrowing
The Directory in France and appointing himself as the emperor, thus having complete control over the
country. Napoleon s most lasting achievements include instituting the Napoleonic code, taking control
of nearly all of Europe, and engaging in numerous battles with European nations. After years of
serving in Europe, Napoleon had many foreign interactions and made himself a reputation split
between a hero and a tyrant. To be a tyrant means to be a cruel and oppressive leader, something

In the years of Napoleon s reign, he engaged in numerous wars throughout Europe to dominate nations
and force them under his control, resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. Although,
some may say most of the wars were not initiated by Napoleon himself, and he was only responding to
a foreign threat. However, that statement is unfair because those countries only engaged in battle when
they felt Napoleon s spreading control threaten their nations. France was a powerful force and the
weaker European countries allied together to stop Napoleon from overthrowing their governments and
forcing his control on them. Not only did Napoleon take control of neighboring countries to France,
but he forced his administration, specifically the Napoleonic code, on them as well. When instituting
the Napoleonic code, many people rejoiced over the enlightened ideas it spread and freedom it
promoted. However, most, if not all of Napoleon s positive reforms were done so with negative
intentions or a counter force in mind. For instance, Napoleon restricted all information in and out of
France that viewed him negatively or could potentially obstruct the submissive society he built. In
fact, plays, newspapers, and books were censored, which kept his citizens in the dark. The deceit
continued when Napoleon promised freedom for all people, but went back on his word once it was no

Feminism In Powers Of Horror
Julia Kristeva is a Bulgarian French philosopher, psychoanalyst and feminist writer. Her work on
abjection gives an engaging insight into human culture in terms of it s relationship to larger
overarching power structures. In Powers of Horror, Kristeva argues that the oppression of woman in
patriarchal societies is constructed through fear of the abject. The tremendous forcing that consists in
subordinating maternal power (whether historical of phantasmic, natural or reproductive.) (Kristeva,
1982, p.91) The abject refers to the human reaction of revulsion to the threat of breakdown between
the subject and object, the self and other. The border which separates nature and culture, between
human and non human. The abject confronts us, on one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the concept of the monstrous feminine, as constructed within/by a patriarchal and phallocentric
ideology, is related intimately to the problem of sexual differences and castration. (Creed, 1993, p.2)
Creed takes an interesting approach to Kristeva theory of abjection and Freud s theory of castration
and applies it to horror film. Taking Kristeva s theory of the abject and the archaic mother, she
constructs monstrous representations of the abject woman. The monstrous womb which is the
representation of mans fear of woman s maternal functions. Fear of the archaic mother turns out to be
essentially fear of her generative power. It is this power, a dreaded one, that patrilineal filiation has the
burden of subduing. (Kristeva, 1982, p.77) Freud argued that woman terrifies because she is castrated.
Castration fear plays on a collapse of gender boundaries (Creed, 1993, p.54) She suggests, that Freud
misread Han s fear in the Little Hans and that Han s viewed his mothers as the castrator not his father,
that his mother s lack of phallus is seen not as a castrated organ but that of a castrating organ. The
mother child border is entangled in the complex and multi faceted image of the castrating mother.
According to Freud, man fears that of the mother as castrated and as that of the cannibalistic all
devouring mother. Construction of a patriarchal ideology unable to deal with the threat of sexual
differences as it is embodied in the images of the feminine as archaic mother and is seen as the
castrated mother. (Creed, 1993, p.22) Kristeva suggests that the notion of the castrated women is to
ease mans fear of woman, who has the power to psychologically and physically castrate him. The
archaic mother as the monstrous womb and the castrating mother can be used as a way of
understanding the work of Mona Hatoum and AIne Phillips, both

Most importantly, a training model must provide a detailed program for officers to follow, which the
CIT model is one such strategy. One of the key aspects of the crisis intervention model is the fostering
a relationship between law enforcement and mental health professionals (Tucker, Van Hasselt, Russell,
2008). Hinging on the fact that law enforcement administrators and officers must be willing to
perform the groundwork to meet the needs of the mental health community and vice versa.
Jail diversion initiatives hinge on the availability of mental health services and practitioners. The

successful program. These issues are less common in metropolitan areas than in largely rural areas

The Between Cultures And Cultures
The deferments between cultures It is great to be familiar with the cultures of any country because
they are reflecting the nature and culture of people across country. The most amazing thing in the
knowledge of civilizations is that you will see that there is partnership between countries and others in
some of the habits and traditions. Perhaps you may wonder yourself why these people do this thing or
how it had come to this tradition, etc. As an example of functions in Asia to look alike in some habits I

Political Socialization Essay
Political socialization is a concept that shows the development of children and adolescents who attain
political cognition, attitudes, and behaviors. Political socialization routinely begins in children. There
are multiple factors that influence the political socialization of citizens. Research theorizes that family
and school teachers are the most influential. Recent research also states that media plays an important
role on influence as well. Everything a child does from birth to around the adolescent age is more than
likely taught through family. As a child they tend to look up to who run their household. Certain
views, attitudes, and behaviors are mimicked because that is the only platform that is being viewed at
the time. Families tend to have an impact on children unintentionally by acting an example for
children. It is often that children end up with the same political views as the parents of that household.
Parents do not flat out talk to children about politics directly, but the occasional remarks that are made
often have serious impact. Family beliefs are a factor in the party identification such as lifelong
republican or lifelong democrat. Studies show that children have the same party identification as their
parents even if they have different views from them. The family may be losing it accreditation in
socialization, but it is still a big factor. By an early age political symbols are understood. By the time a
child is five he/she has some understanding about

Altitude Training Essay
The study of altitude training was found during and after the 1968 Olympics, which took place in
Mexico City, which has an elevation 2,240 metres (7,349 ft) above sea level. It was during these
Olympic Games that endurance events saw significant record finishes and anaerobic, sprint events
broke all types of records. (http://www.olympic.org/mexico 1968 summer olympics)
Altitude training is practised by endurance athletes who train for several weeks at high altitude, Over
2,500 metres above sea level, or at intermediate altitudes due to the shortage of suitable altitude
training locations. Even at intermediate levels the air still contains approximately 20.9% oxygen, but
partial pressure of oxygen is reduced (West J., et al, 1996)
In most tissues of the body, ATP production primarily occurs through mitochondrial oxidative
phosphorylation of reduced intermediates, which are in turn derived from substrates such as glucose
and fatty acids. In order to maintain ATP homeostasis, and cellular function, the mitochondria requires
a constant supply of fuels and oxygen. In many individuals at altitude, tissue oxygen levels fall and the
cell must meet this hypoxic challenge to maintain energetic and limit oxidative stress. Varying on
protocols, the body can adapt to the lack of oxygen which can be increasing the mass of red blood
cells and haemoglobin or changes in muscle metabolism. Depending very much on the protocols used,
the body may adapt to the relative lack of oxygen in one

some instances that have put all that in jeopardy for us Americans. There are people making bad

of speakers coming to campuses and creating problems. The article Where is the Line on College

now unsure of how to proceed with allowing the freedom of speech to be represented on campus,
simply for safety reasons. They don t want to take or limit the students and staffs first amendment but

Descartes Ontological Argument Essay
In philosophy of religion, one of Descartes s most famous arguments is his Ontological proof for the
existence of God. It is a proof that one can know God a priori, with no experience whatsoever.
Countering Descartes, a philosopher named Caterus raised key objections to his proof, which
Descartes later responded to in an intriguing way. Descartes s reply to Caterus s critique of the
Ontological argument does not properly refute the objections made. Descartes s Ontological argument
begins with the idea of that which is clearly and distinctly known must be true. Following from that,
he states that because one clearly and distinctly perceives God as a being with all perfections and
because existence is a perfection, God must exist. Further, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Caterus writes, This complex existent lion includes both lion and the mode existence; and includes
them essentially, for if you take away either it will not be the same complex (Descartes, 2009, p.86).
Further in his writing, Caterus shows that although something may possess the mode existing , that
mode only applies if the object itself already exists. In defense of this argument, he states that
although God can clearly and distinctly perceive an existent lion , God is in no way required to make
that lion exist. Likewise, one cannot prove the existence of God without first showing that God
already exists (Descartes, 2009, pp.86 7). This refutation that Caterus raises plays a key role in
defeating Descartes preemptive defense of his own argument. With this logic, Caterus shows that
existing, as a property, even as an essential property, does not equate to necessary existence.
Throughout Caterus s critique, many strong objections are raised, and it is when Descartes attempts to
respond that the argument falls apart. Descartes fails to properly refute any objections raised by
Caterus, or solidify his case. To begin his response, Descartes (2009) begins by contrasting St. Thomas
s argument and his own. In this contrasting, he states that his argument is not subject to the criticisms
St. Thomas s argument is, due to the different wording used (p.87). I believe, however, that Caterus
was not attempting to directly say the arguments were identical. Caterus even

In turn, this result in the allowance of the muscles to contract is involuntary and requires no thought.
The relationship between the structure and function of the Outer Wall Intestine cells is, in the
structure, the fibers are short and not striated, while since the cells are smooth cells this allows the
function of the cells to be involuntary and is composed in the lining of the organ. The contractions of
the cells allow the organ to keep blood, fluids, and necessary nutrients to flow throughout the organ.
Slide 1:Muscle Skeletal Longitudinal Section and Slide 2:Muscle Skeletal Cross Section Yes, there are
multiple striations across the width of the Muscle Skeletal Longitudinal Section of the cells and the

striated, and the fibers are long and each muscle cell is fused to one another. This is why so many
nuclei are included. Also, the fibers are almost threadlike, with dark and light colored striations. As a
result of the contractions in the Muscle Skeletal Longitudinal Section cells and the Muscle Skeletal

Review Of Anna Deavere Smith s Twilight Essay
In May of 1992, actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith was commissioned to write a one woman
performance piece about the experiences, feelings, and tensions that contributed to and were
exacerbated by the 1992 Los Angeles riots.[1] For her work, Smith interviewed over 200 residents of
Los Angeles during the time of the riot. Her script consists entirely of the actual words of members of
the Los Angeles community as they reflect on their experiences surrounding the Los Angeles riots. As
Smith described in the introduction to her play, Twilight, which she later published as a book, I am
first looking for the humanness inside the problems, or the crises. [2] She strived to maintain a wide
variety of perspectives, interviewing people from all walks of life: white, black, Korean, Latino, poor,
rich, police officers and gang members alike. Anna Deavere Smith s play was widely received as a
brilliant work of theater. One New York Times reviewer, David Richards, praised her performance
saying, She does people s souls. [3] Anna Deavere Smith s play Twilight helps illuminate the thoughts
and feelings of many diverse perspectives behind the racial tensions, the perceived police brutality,
and the lack of leadership for greatly needed urban renewal. Combined with historical research,
Twilight provides a meaningful examination of the underlying causes of the Los Angeles riots. A
longer historical view also reveals the larger class tensions and the massive fluctuation of ethnic

Amol M. Shanbhag Professor Rankin MGT 3300 1 December 2016 The Sarbanes Oxley Act The
Sarbanes Oxley Act, is an act passed by U.S. Congress on July 30, 2002. The primary reason was to
protect investors from the possibility of fraudulent accounting activities by corporations. The act is
commonly known as SOX Act. The act is named after its cosponsors, U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes and
U.S. Representative Michael G. Oxley. It mandates strict reforms to improve financial disclosures
from corporations and prevent accounting fraud. The Sarbanes Oxley Act is arranged into eleven titles.
They are Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), Auditor Independence, Corporate
Responsibility, Enhanced Financial Disclosures, Analyst Conflicts of Interest, Commission Resources
and Authority, White Collar Crime Penalty Enhancement, Corporate Tax Returns, and Corporate
Fraud Accountability. These titles provide the description of specific requirements and mandates for
the financial reporting. The SOX Act monitors compliance through various sections. However, the
most significant sections are 302 (Disclosure controls), 401 (Disclosures in periodic reports), 404
(Assessment of internal control), 802 (Criminal penalties for influencing US Agency

love throughout the book. The theme of true love is shown by Buttercup and Westley. One example is
that the main motivation for Westley to go through climbing to the pick of the mountain, fighting
Inigo and Fezzik the giant is to save his true love.Even though there was many struggle they had to go
through and many interference that comes to their love to separate them, they seems to work there
way out of it and become together again. An example is that when the king pursed Buttercup to marry
her she told him that i will not love you for i have loved once, and which she did, even later on after
she gave him away to them to save Westleys life and she never give up believing on her true love
coming back to save her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Stock Market and Stock Option Plan
Should the company implement the proposed employee stock option plan? In a typical stock option
plan, the employee is offered a specific number of shares which he/she can exercise (buy) at some
specified time in the future. The price at which the employee can buy the stock is equal to the market
price at the time the stock option was granted (grant price). The employee s gain is equal to the market
value of the stock at the time it is exercised, less the grant price. If the market price of the stock
remains the same or decreases relative to the grant price, then the stock option is worthless. Stock
options are typically offered to managers, most technical individual contributors and about half of the
other professionals. Smaller ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Risk that would scare off a shareholder is a matter of indifference to an option holder. This may lead
management taking too much risk as the upside to taking the risk gives high paybacks whereas there is
virtually no downside. In THTF, other measures need to be put into place to make sure of the interests
alignment before implement stock options compensation. Employees From the employee s point of
view, receiving stock options is a huge benefit as the employee can reap financial success from the
firm. But is it really so? The executives may suffer from the more volatility then the market as they are
too under diversified with their stake too over concentrated in a firm. Employees should not put their
eggs instruments and salary into one basket. Thus, this will lead to the undervaluing of options by the
employees. This shows that options are wasted on employees. Market Paranoia Stock options
compensation may also lead to the market being deeply suspicious of the corporation. When top
executives are paid in stock options compensation, they get huge compensation packages which are
hidden away from public scrutiny. Furthermore, stock options also dilute shareholders. Management
may also manipulate the market before the stock options grant date to get a better deal for themselves
which would lead to excess volatility. Thus, having stock options compensation may lead to distrust

The University s Lick Observatory, Planet Hunter Team
As a member that is part of the UC s Lick Observatory Planet Hunter Team, I have found a possible
planetary system that may contain a planet. From my further research, I discovered that the planet may
support life, such as bacteria and plants. After confirming with the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence Institute about intelligent life, I eventually decided to want to discuss intelligent life
through a scientific process. I will use the Drake Equation to give us the possibility that intelligent life
can emit signals to reveal any existence. The equation is given as N= R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L.
The calculations of each variables will help me understand what is being contributed into calculating
the chance of any signals being detected and the calculated result will determined the conclusion of
intelligent life existing. Nevertheless, this is just an estimation for the possibility of any life as the
Drake Equation may or may not be as reliable as we may expect it to be. Calculations Step 1. I know
that there are 7 new stars formed yearly in the galaxy, the number of stars is represented by R*. This is
the annual rate of star formation that is adaptable for any life. So R* will equal 7 new stars formed
every year. R* = 7 new stars formed every year Step 2. There is a 100% chance that if there are stars,
then there has to exist planetary systems. So, R* = 7 new stars annually and fp = 1/1 relationship
between stars and planetary systems or 1. Next, I take 7

Socrates Views On The Allegory Of The Cave
In the allegory of the cave, Socrates is explaining to the student how we are blinded by what we are
only allowed to see. If we were to see the truth, then we would return to tell the others, but they would
not believe you.
If you put that into today, you could compare it to the conspiracy theorists. They think that the
government is hiding us from the truth, and that the only way to learn is to go beyond the boundaries
set by the law. If you saw the report about the Roswell incident, you would see that they describe the
spacecraft as circular, 50 feet in diameter, and held three bodies of human shape, three feet tall,
dressed in metallic cloth of a fine texture. I think that that proves the existence of aliens, or midgets

Examples Of Inhumanity In Tuesdays With Morrie
Where would the world be without humanity? Would it be laying in ruins because of needless wars
fought? Perhaps there would be a so called master race that exterminated any person that slightly
deviated from what was deemed perfect. Maybe there would be no more humans left at all. Humanity
binds the human race together. The caring for other people and not just thinking about yourself. The
word is humanity, and the root of that is human. This concept is central to all our beliefs. Just like a
coin though, there is a flip side. Inhumanity, when humans do not act like regular humans. To be
described as inhuman a person has to be extremely nefarious. These people that commit inhuman acts
upon others are treated as monsters, and by all rights are monsters. Both of the books we read this
semester dealt with humanity and inhumanity. Although one book clearly had a lot more inhumanity
in it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An old friend of the main character was dying. Morrie has ALS, it is a crippling disease that affects
the nervous system. Mitch is very upset about Morrie dieing. Morrie taught Mitch a lot about life and
humanity. Morrie taught Mitch how to feel, and hot to deal with emotions. Even though Morrie is
dying slowly and painfully, Morrie is staying positive. On one occasion Morrie tells Mitch that in the
mornings is when Morrie mourns. Morrie mourns the insidious disease and mourns what is lost. After
that Morrie cries if needed, and thinks about all the good things still left in life(Albom 57). This is
exactly how to balance inhumanity and humanity. People must always look at the good in every
situation. In Night the characters tried to stay positive just as Morrie is trying to. Morrie once said,
make peace with living (173). Morrie was content in dying and held no unrealistic beliefs. Mitch
believed it was wrong to take someone who had helped him so much away, but death is

Compare And Contrast Ancient Persia And India
Compare and Contrast Ancient Persia and India It is crazy how two different civilizations from two
different times can have such similar ideas about their economies. But, India, becoming an empire
much later than Persia, had some improved technologies and ideas which made these two civilizations
somewhat different. Persia s main focus of strengthening their economy was the development of
agriculture. By growing crops like grains, fruits, and vegetables, the Persians were able to acquire a
great amount of food, making the population grow and grow. Fortunately, their location helped them
conquer smaller civilizations so they can gain fertile soil, which is extremely important in agriculture.
The abundance of food that the Persians had helped them trade with other civilizations that couldn t
grow the crops they needed. In return they would receive items that they needed to help their economy
grow. Persia s main trade route was the Persian Royal Road, which was about 1500 miles long. To
transport themselves to deliver a message or items to trade with, the Persians would have intervals
along the road and one horse would pull one man until he reaches his stop. It would take about nine
days to travel the whole road using couriers, while on footy it would have taken them three months,
making trade and communication very slow. Persia did have a social class, with the royal family on
top, and of course, the slaves at the bottom. Slaves were a very big part in the labor systems of

Martin Luther King Justice And Injustice Essay
One wonders if justice is a product of rational thinking or is it merely an evolved primal mode of
survival of our ancestors reflecting in their use of discriminating judgment as they moved from place
to place, facing the challenges of their times? His desires, needs, and ambitions, being limited, he was
content in flowing with the moment; moral rightness was natural to him.The prehistoric man hunted
when he was hungry, sought shelter when he felt the need to rest or save himself from the onslaught of
the inclement weather or prey; using only as much natural resources as in its complete rightfulness. He
took from nature only as much as he needed and not going beyond his needs; thereby preserving the
environment, and knowingly or unknowingly exhibited a certain sense of creating a rightful
environment; the need to preserve nature and not destroy it unlike the example of oil ... Show more

Justice is the power of making fine distinctions, which plays a very crucial role in manifesting the
desires; it affects all. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the most influential civil right activist of America,
very rightly once said, Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere...whatever affects one
directly, affects all indirectly (Jacobus 378). This perhaps should be the motivation for every person to
think and act right; directing their desires towards the right path. Henry David Thoreau asserts that it
is more important to develop a respect for the right, rather than a respect for law, for people s
obligations are to do what is right (Jacobus 306 307). His refusal to pay the taxes for the Mexican
American war is a reflection of these thoughts, which leads him later in writing his lecture on Civil

Laboratory 7: Environmental Effects on Enzyme Activity
BI 185 03
BY
Charlie Kane
10/24/17
Abstract
During this experiment we tested the effects that specific environmental conditions have on the
enzyme, peroxidase. Through this experiment we developed an understanding of enzymes and their
functions. By exposing the enzymes to different environments, we observed a changed in their
activity. In order for us to measure these changes we used the technique of spectrophotometry,
meaning we used a spectrophotometer, which measures the amount of light a chemical can absorb. In
our findings we discovered that certain environmental factors such as pH, temperature, boiling do
have an affect on enzyme activity. In conclusion the five null hypothesis were proven to be incorrect.
Introduction
Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells.
They could be found in every living thing. Enzymes increase the rate at which chemical reactions
occur. A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy required. They are
proteins made up of several amino acids. Each enzyme is different due to its structure, it all has
different amino acid sequence. An enzymes ability to function depends on it s environment. These
factors include temperature, denaturation, pH, the size , the shape, and the amount of enzymes present.
Enzymes performs best at ph7. That is the same pH as blood , the more enzymes stray away from pH7
the weaker it becomes , the active site gets damaged. This makes the enzyme not active, no longer
functional. When it comes to temperature enzymes at a certain temperature have maximum activity.
As temperature increases the enzyme activity also increases. When enzymes reach their maximum
activity level and the temperature is still increasing it will start to decline (denaturation). The rate of
reaction also depends on how much enzymes are present. We tested 5 hypothesis which were the
amount of enzyme does not alter the rate of a reaction. pH does not influence the rate of an enzyme
reaction. Temperature does not influence the rate of an enzyme activity. Boiling an enzyme before a
reaction does not influence enzyme activity. The

  • 2. Functional Genomic Analysis of C. elegans Using RNA... Introduction Before we talk about this important experiment, do you know what a nematode is? Specifically, this experiment used Caenorhabditis elegans, C. elegans for short. C. elegans is a little worm (just like the kind you find in the ground), but has a very special place in modern biochemistry: scientists have mapped its entire genomic sequence. This sequence lets scientists know the character and location of all C. elegans genes. However, biochemists do not yet fully understand what each gene does and the goal of this experiment is to find the function of each gene within the worm. The connection between a worm s genotype and phenotype is important, because, believe it or not, human beings and worms share many of the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All eukaryotic cells get their genetic information from DNA, which are strands of nucleotides whose order conveys genetic information to the cell. Structurally, DNA looks like a ladder. A DNA strand is made up of a sugar phosphate backbone (similar to the sides of a ladder, alternating sugar and phosphate) and is connected in the middle with paired purines and pyrimidines (fancy names for four chemicals that make up the steps of the ladder). Scientists refer to the distinctive shape of DNA as a double helix. DNA replication is necessary for organisms to stay alive and reproduce. When cells replicate, the DNA must also be copied so the daughter cells contain the genetic information necessary to perform key chemical reactions. Cells have machinery that read the information in DNA and use these instructions to make proteins. To make proteins, the DNA must first unwind in order to be read. This small section is then replicated to form a single stranded RNA strand. The RNA strand then forms what is called messenger RNA or simply mRNA. The mRNA is used to make the proteins the cell needs. In some viruses, however, the genetic material is double stranded RNA (known as dsRNA), rather than DNA. These viruses inject their dsRNA into a host s cell. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It seems like every week we hear about thousands and thousands of people losing their jobs. Back in the 1980s most of the job losses were in the blue collar sector. In the 1990s it seems many of the cuts were made in the white collar, management jobs. Why? Think about it. Technology, to a large extent, has driven organizations to change the way they operate and that includes the way they manage. We re going to take an in depth look at how organizations work and how they ve been transformed by technology on the world stage. Information systems are the foundation for conducting business today. In many industries, survival and even existence is difficult without extensive use of information technology. No longer can we imagine going to work and conducting business without them. As a society we have come to rely extensively on the use of information appliances such as cell phones, BlackBerrys, handhelds, and other hardware. Communicating and conducting business is increasingly being carried out through the use of e mail, online conferencing, and international teleconferencing over the Internet have all become essential tools of business. • 4. Education at a Year-Round School Essay Education at a Year Round School Consider the following situation: A car is driving past the local elementary school on a hot and sunny July afternoon. As the car approached the school the driver notices some unusual things. Students are outside with the teachers for recess, and it looks as if school is in session. The school is on a year round schedule. The driver is intrigued and decides to do some research. From the research, this person found that students are achieving more academically and the teachers are well rested. Year round schooling is beneficial to school systems because: it alleviates overcrowding, offers remedial opportunities, decreases teacher burnout, increases retention rates, assists English as a Second Language ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each track of students is staggered throughout the year so that each group is attending the school at different times. For example, a school that has 1000 students could rotate them into five groups of 200 students each. Using a multi track schedule also decreases the need for construction of new schools. According to Rivera, of the Washington Post (2003): when employing a multi track schedule, 25 percent more students can attend year round schools, without added construction (para. 8). (9)Additionally, Barber (1996) adds that The Soccoro Independent School District, in Texas, saved 30 million dollars of tax payer money by using a multi track schedule (para. 4). One result of overcrowding is a lack of personal assistance. Remediation Students are struggling in school and need extra remediation. All too often in schools who run on a traditional school calendar, students do not receive the help they need until summer school. By that point it is too late and the student is failing academically. Robert Smotherman, superintendent of Bardstown City School District in Kentucky (as quoted by Wildavsky (1999)) says, Instead of waiting until summer school, you catch him [student] in October, and you ve got a shot at getting him back on track (para. 8). • 5. The Day With The Patients Of Regent Care On February 5, 2016, I had the privilege to spend the day with the patients of Regent Care. I was accompanied by my classmates from the Communication Disorders program. As I walked into the facilities cafeteria we gathered around the round tables. As we waited for instructions our professor gave us an overview of what we were expected to do. There were big squared plastic bins that were filled with different kinds of supplies. As we assisted our peers get the supplies out of the bin we began to separate and organize the supplies by activities. We began by cleaning the round tables with water. After they were dry we began setting up the different stations. There were about five activities which included getting their nails done, decorating a picture frame, decorating a bag, painting figures as arts and crafts and bowling. There was an elderly woman sitting by herself in one of the round tables looking at us set up the activities. I approached her by asking her if she wanted to decorate a bag. She looked at me with a smile and said, si, claro con gusto. I opened the package of fabric painted and lined up the paint in front of her where she was able to reach all five colors. As I called out each color she told me her favorite color was green. I asked what she wanted to write or draw on the bag, but she replied by saying, yo no se. Yo no puedo pensar. Wendy said the quote after Peter flew down to get Michael who has fallen asleep while flying and almost hit the water. Due to the fact that, using and knowing [the] background knowledge of a story is important to read a text (Freebody and Luke). In the novella The metamorphosis , Kafka s personal history has been artfully [expressed] (Classon 82). The novella was written in 1916, before the World War 1 in German {Research}. When the novella was written, in the Europe, preemption of human has kick started through homogeneity of the object. Moreover, owing to development of IT technology, people can live much more convenient life rather than the past. According to the theory of Alvin Toffler, as the first wave of agriculture society has arrived to the second wave of industry society, economy has developed rapidly {research}. This change makes life more comfortable and affluent. Before the World War 1, the industrial revolution had broken out and it drastically altered the economies and social hierarchies of Europe (Classon 12). Owing to industrial revolution and industrialization, as people could accumulate worth, people put accumulation of worth ahead of everything. • 9. Youth Incarceration Research Paper The Incarceration of Juveniles It is estimated that on any given day there are 80,000 youth incarcerated in the United States, which is more than any other developed country in the world(Townes, 1). Incarcerating youth before exploring other options is a social injustice. Judges rather give short term solutions than permanently fix the problem. To understand why this is a social injustice, four pieces of information must be known: the causes, who it affects and how, who s responsible, and solutions in place. Incarcerating youth affects them in many different ways. One way is the psychiatric damage prisons cause. Being in prison means that the child is not able to be with their family and community, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. Studies show that incarcerated youth die from suicide at a rate two to three times more than non incarcerated youths (Polish,1). In addition to mental health effects, incarceration at a young age affects the person s future by lowering their chances of finding a job. When sentenced to a correctional facility, the child s education is stopped and they become 38 times more likely to become a repeat offender(Koehler,1). With no education and a ... • 10. The Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus Essay The stories of Icarus and Prometheus are two famous Greek myths, having been portrayed in many types of media by various renowned artists like Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Lord George Gordon Byron respectively. The two stories are portrayed in painting and poem form respectively. Both also tell the stories in a different way by emphasizing some points and overshadowing others to illustrate their message. Bruegel uses his lack of focus towards the misfortune of Icarus to illustrate that the suffering or misfortune of one is easily missed or ignored by others, while Byron uses his magnification of Prometheus suffering in order to illustrate that suffering for a righteous cause is noble and good. In Bruegel s painting, The Landscape with the Fall of Icarus , he depicts a beautiful day with a farmer plowing his field, a shepherd herding his sheep, a fisherman ... The way that Bruegel tries to downplay and hide the drowning of Icarus by putting him in the background instead of having Icarus being the main subject in the picture illustrates his message, that suffering and misfortune of other people are often missed and ignored by others. On the other hand, Byron, with his poem, Prometheus , writes about the glorious deeds of Prometheus and how Prometheus is punished unjustly. Byron uses phrases like [a]ll the proud can feel of pain and [o]f thine impenetrable spirit in order to highlight the glorious suffering and perseverance Prometheus (8, 42). The spirit of martyrdom is clearly seen in this poem when Byron puts in his poem and making Death a Victory, as martyrs die for a cause which makes their deaths a victory (59). • 11. Bail Laws ( Nsw ) Bail laws (NSW) Bail has always been part of the common law system. In NSW, they have based their concept from the Statue of Westminster I (1275), where there are different categories that separates who are to be bailed or refused bail, which had become part of the Bail Act 1978 (NSW) and was enforced from March 1980. Bail Act 2013 (NSW) is the only other law that replaced Bail Act 1978 (NSW), but was amended by Bail Amendment Act 2014 (NSW), which is the final replacement coming into full effect in 28th January 2015. If the prosecution can provide sufficient reasoning of why bail cannot be granted, the assumption of bail can be revoked. Serious drug related offences can also disprove the presumption for bail and (likewise towards aggressive offences) the accused must reason why bail should be permitted. Issue and effect on individuals and society Prior to 28th January 2015, bail laws posed significant loopholes in the system and are deemed to be ineffective to achieve justice. Accused offenders may get away with bail based with evidence in the case if it does not seem to pose a threat to the community. The problem persists within the conditions set for their bail, as responsibility lies upon the magistrate or police to impose appropriate conditions. However, though conditions do vary, it possesses a significant risk if the conditions enforced were not strict enough, opening vulnerabilities for the accused to commit another crime, slipping through their enforced conditions. Yet not enough has been done to alert the community of this flaw, which thus continued to believe that the criminal law system is protecting them. Effects are potentially dangerous, as individuals would face the growing rate of criminal activity and with limited policing resources, not everyone ensured to be protected in an unsafe suburban environment. If this issue continued to remain unresolved in the long term, it would slowly corrupt society values, with more individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Is There A, Narcissism Epidemic, Among Contemporary Young... The issue for the last critique article is, Is there a Narcissism Epidemic among contemporary young adults? Yes I do believe that there is a narcissism epidemic among young adults. I am a young adult as we speak, and being a young adult I started to change, and recognize my behavioral had shift gear to a whole another dimension, which it all started when I started my freshman year in college. Jean M. Twenge argues that The Age of Anxiety? Birth Cohort Change in Anxiety and Neuroticism, 1952 1993. Jean M. Twenge also agreed on the issue. Her article presents the results from two meta analyses examining self reports of anxiety and neuroticism. Jean M. Twenge finding demonstrate that both college students and schoolchildren report increases in these characteristic. Her suggestion was low social connectedness and environmental threats are responsible for these changes. I feel as though this is agreeable because I think all college students come to college with anxiety and neuroticism, and reasons because of low social connectedness, and environmental threat. Social connectedness model focuses on social exclusion as particularly important to anxiety. When you exclude that social connectedness, it then becomes a lack of connection in a society, may produce alienation and feeling of loneliness and despair. Environmental threat connects the same way. Environmental threat is basically violent crime, the nuclear war, fear of diseases such as AIDS, and the entrance of women into ... • 13. Evidence Of The Big Bang Cosmology The second evidence of the Big Bang is the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is the electromagnetic radiation left over from the time of recombination in Big Bang cosmology. It represents the first light that travelled in the universe, at the time when the first atoms were formed and the universe was transparent. The scientists Alpher and Hermann deduced that before the recombination epoch, everything was plasma and the light rays would be continually scattered by the particles they encountered (protons, neutrons, electrons), because many particles were charged. During the recombination period, (around 300,000 years after the Big Bang, time taken from the universe to cool down to 3,000 degrees Kelvin), the universe had cooled sufficiently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... COBE s measurements also provided another key of evidence of the Big Bang: the CMB has a near perfect black body spectrum. an object with a constant temperature that absorbs all radiation that hits it A blackbody spectrum is produced by an isothermal, opaque and non reflecting object. Because of the universality of the blackbody spectrum, it is possible to convert any spectral measurement into a brightness temperature at the measured wavelength. The unique character of a blackbody spectrum is that the brightness temperature of a blackbody is the same at all wavelengths (this is why every wavelength in the CMB is 1 mm). Furthermore, in order to make a blackbody spectrum, an object has to be opaque, non reflective and isothermal. Thus a star, which is opaque, does not produce it because it has cooler outer layers and hotter deeper layers. Thus the universe should have been a dark (since photons weren t free to escape), non reflecting and isothermal plasma. (10) Even though the temperature of the universe changes as it evolves, it looks isothermal because the redshifting of radiation makes the universe appear to have exactly the same temperature as ... It is the same exact story that Shakespeare wrote. Another story that is the same as Shakespeare s King Lear, is the story The Mirror for Magistrates, by Higgins. • 15. My Trip to Saint Petersburg Dali Museum For our assigned cultural exposure I chose to visit the Saint Petersburg Dali Museum. I drove over on a windy day across the causeway in a Jeep that is less than running well, so by the time I found the museum I was a bit relieved. I had wanted to go to the Museum since moving here in early 2011 but have just never made the time. I lived in southern Spain for several years and one of the few regrets I have from my time there is that I never made it to the museum there. Upon my arrival and paying my admission fee I was informed that there was a guided tour about to begin. I hurried up the stairs and filled in the back of the pack. There are about 30 35 other patrons there as well. The guide starts with a brief history of Dali s early life growing up in southeastern Spain, the death of his mother and his fathers remarrying of Dali s aunt (which he commemorated in a painting), to his marring to the Famous Gala. The guide then informed us that it was Gala who helped to manage Dali s career acting as his agent. Not only was his love for Gala shown in his art but also her tenacity reflected in several of the pieces on display featuring her. Several of the paintings on display this year either in the Morse Family collection or on loan to the museum were discussed on the tour to included a painting Dali did about the age of 15 after his mothers passing and his fathers marring his deceased wife s sister. • 16. Our True Nationality Is Mankind Our true nationality is mankind. ― H.G. Wells Today, the scourge of nationalism continues to infect humanity. Without doubt, in some circles, nationalism is hotly debated. For most people, however, the concept of nationalism is rarely questioned. In fact, it s a foregone conclusion that people should love the nation in which they reside. Some people even take great pride in the fact that they were arbitrarily born in a specific geographical location. Unfortunately, like religion or capitalism, nationalism is alive and well in the 21st century. Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been creating, critiquing and altering institutions. For instance, people have been condemning religion for centuries, indeed millennia. Yet the institution of religion still remains a dominant force in modern society. Without question, religious institutions and practices have morphed, dare I say, evolved, over the centuries. But the fundamental concept that human beings exist within an abstract framework of Gods, mythologies, symbols, and so forth, still remains. In short, it takes an extremely long time to change ideologies and practices. On the other hand, that doesn t mean conversations about such topics should be off limits or discouraged. Quite the contrary: such conversations are essential, especially today. As the legendary science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin recently said, We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. • 17. The Importance Of The First Amendment In The United States... The United States Constitution was written in 1787 in Philadelphia to establish the national government and guaranteed certain basic rights for citizens (History.com). Over the years, we added new amendments but never considered changing the current amendments. Now is the time to look at changing some of them to make it safer for us as citizens and to make our country a better place. People have looked over the amendments and want some change. This paper will give you the people a good look on why and how we could make the amendment better. My first amendment I want to consider changing is the 2nd amendment the right to bear arms. This amendment was created to allow anybody have and carry guns. I believe it should be changed because of all the gun problems we have had including 9/11, and different other terrorist attacks. My reasoning on why this needs to happen is simple, public terror is not protected under the Constitution (Feinblatt). Some lawmakers have considered that open carry is threating public safety. Now because it is legal in some states, open carry activists take full advantage of the loophole in the 2nd amendment, which typically operates past the limits of the law (Feinblatt). Until we close the open carry loophole in our laws the armed intimidation will continue to serve as a strategy for more activists in our cities and towns (Feinblatt). All the problems that the U.S has explained why some states sensibly and constitutionally reject the open carry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not only will other people s views enhance ideas, but also is crucial for writing on a topic. Acknowledging opposing perspectives will give a writer more authority on the subject being discussed. In one thing they are similar and that is how they have an extracellular digestion. When an animal has an extracellular digestion means that the breakdown of food in compartments that are continuous with the outside of the animal s body (Reese 899). Examples of an extracellular digestion is when an animal has a gastrovascular cavity or a alimentary canal. • 21. Analysis Of On Chesil Beach All three texts present very different views on marriage. On Chesil Beach presents a picture of a nervous young couple on the first night of their honeymoon, where although both are inexperienced, they seem to be in love. Whereas, in The Merchants Tale , we have an old hoor man, desperate for a young wife to present him with an heir. On the other hand, Romeo and Juliet is a play about the marriage of two lovers; this view is idealised and has for centuries been perceived as the perfect view of a relationship. The Merchants Tale s narrator is the Merchant who has been married for a little over two months. According to Stephanie A. Tolliver, critics have painted him as a disillusioned man full of hatred and contempt . His marriage is a disaster and therefore we are presented with a bitter view on the story of Januarie and May. The poem is a tale within a tale and we are given three perspectives in all. Chaucer, the poet, The Merchant the omniscient narrator and the protagonists Januarie, May and Damyan. The view of marriage presented in the tale is a very negative one with the wives being at fault. Many have called the tale to be anti feminist and critics have discussed the negative presentation of May throughout the centuries. Both stylish and secure, leather has been relied upon by bikers throughout history to keep them safe from the elements and protect them during falls and crashes. The leather jacket is as synonymous with motorcycles as two wheels and an engine, but an increasing number of bikers are leaving behind their leather jackets in favor of alternatives of a different material, such as mesh or Kevlar. Taking Kristeva s theory of the abject and the archaic mother, she constructs monstrous representations of the abject woman. The monstrous womb which is the representation of mans fear of woman s maternal functions. Fear of the archaic mother turns out to be essentially fear of her generative power. It is this power, a dreaded one, that patrilineal filiation has the burden of subduing. (Kristeva, 1982, p.77) Freud argued that woman terrifies because she is castrated. Castration fear plays on a collapse of gender boundaries (Creed, 1993, p.54) She suggests, that Freud misread Han s fear in the Little Hans and that Han s viewed his mothers as the castrator not his father, that his mother s lack of phallus is seen not as a castrated organ but that of a castrating organ. The mother child border is entangled in the complex and multi faceted image of the castrating mother. It is a proof that one can know God a priori, with no experience whatsoever. Countering Descartes, a philosopher named Caterus raised key objections to his proof, which Descartes later responded to in an intriguing way. Descartes s reply to Caterus s critique of the Ontological argument does not properly refute the objections made. Descartes s Ontological argument begins with the idea of that which is clearly and distinctly known must be true. Following from that, he states that because one clearly and distinctly perceives God as a being with all perfections and because existence is a perfection, God must exist. Further, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Caterus writes, This complex existent lion includes both lion and the mode existence; and includes them essentially, for if you take away either it will not be the same complex (Descartes, 2009, p.86). Further in his writing, Caterus shows that although something may possess the mode existing , that mode only applies if the object itself already exists. In defense of this argument, he states that although God can clearly and distinctly perceive an existent lion , God is in no way required to make that lion exist. Likewise, one cannot prove the existence of God without first showing that God already exists (Descartes, 2009, pp.86 7). This refutation that Caterus raises plays a key role in defeating Descartes preemptive defense of his own argument. With this logic, Caterus shows that existing, as a property, even as an essential property, does not equate to necessary existence. Throughout Caterus s critique, many strong objections are raised, and it is when Descartes attempts to respond that the argument falls apart. Descartes fails to properly refute any objections raised by Caterus, or solidify his case. To begin his response, Descartes (2009) begins by contrasting St. Thomas s argument and his own. In this contrasting, he states that his argument is not subject to the criticisms St. Thomas s argument is, due to the different wording used (p.87). I believe, however, that Caterus was not attempting to directly say the arguments were identical. Caterus even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In turn, this result in the allowance of the muscles to contract is involuntary and requires no thought. The relationship between the structure and function of the Outer Wall Intestine cells is, in the structure, the fibers are short and not striated, while since the cells are smooth cells this allows the function of the cells to be involuntary and is composed in the lining of the organ. The contractions of the cells allow the organ to keep blood, fluids, and necessary nutrients to flow throughout the organ. Slide 1:Muscle Skeletal Longitudinal Section and Slide 2:Muscle Skeletal Cross Section Yes, there are multiple striations across the width of the Muscle Skeletal Longitudinal Section of the cells and the Muscle Skeletal Cross Section cells. There are several nuclei in both cells. The fibers in both cells are striated, and the fibers are long and each muscle cell is fused to one another. This is why so many nuclei are included. Also, the fibers are almost threadlike, with dark and light colored striations. As a result of the contractions in the Muscle Skeletal Longitudinal Section cells and the Muscle Skeletal Cross Section cells, it allows your muscle to be able to contract in response to nerve stimuli. This means that the movements of most of these muscles are not involuntary, you can control them. Therefore, once the stimulation stops, the muscles relax. • 40. Review Of Anna Deavere Smith s Twilight Essay In May of 1992, actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith was commissioned to write a one woman performance piece about the experiences, feelings, and tensions that contributed to and were exacerbated by the 1992 Los Angeles riots.[1] For her work, Smith interviewed over 200 residents of Los Angeles during the time of the riot. Her script consists entirely of the actual words of members of the Los Angeles community as they reflect on their experiences surrounding the Los Angeles riots. As Smith described in the introduction to her play, Twilight, which she later published as a book, I am first looking for the humanness inside the problems, or the crises. [2] She strived to maintain a wide variety of perspectives, interviewing people from all walks of life: white, black, Korean, Latino, poor, rich, police officers and gang members alike. Anna Deavere Smith s play was widely received as a brilliant work of theater. One New York Times reviewer, David Richards, praised her performance saying, She does people s souls. [3] Anna Deavere Smith s play Twilight helps illuminate the thoughts and feelings of many diverse perspectives behind the racial tensions, the perceived police brutality, and the lack of leadership for greatly needed urban renewal. Combined with historical research, Twilight provides a meaningful examination of the underlying causes of the Los Angeles riots. A longer historical view also reveals the larger class tensions and the massive fluctuation of ethnic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The primary reason was to protect investors from the possibility of fraudulent accounting activities by corporations. The act is commonly known as SOX Act. The act is named after its cosponsors, U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes and U.S. Representative Michael G. Oxley. It mandates strict reforms to improve financial disclosures from corporations and prevent accounting fraud. The Sarbanes Oxley Act is arranged into eleven titles. They are Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), Auditor Independence, Corporate Responsibility, Enhanced Financial Disclosures, Analyst Conflicts of Interest, Commission Resources and Authority, White Collar Crime Penalty Enhancement, Corporate Tax Returns, and Corporate Fraud Accountability. These titles provide the description of specific requirements and mandates for the financial reporting. The SOX Act monitors compliance through various sections. However, the most significant sections are 302 (Disclosure controls), 401 (Disclosures in periodic reports), 404 (Assessment of internal control), 802 (Criminal penalties for influencing US Agency investigation/proper administration). • 43. Stock Market and Stock Option Plan Should the company implement the proposed employee stock option plan? In a typical stock option plan, the employee is offered a specific number of shares which he/she can exercise (buy) at some specified time in the future. The price at which the employee can buy the stock is equal to the market price at the time the stock option was granted (grant price). The employee s gain is equal to the market value of the stock at the time it is exercised, less the grant price. If the market price of the stock remains the same or decreases relative to the grant price, then the stock option is worthless. The executives may suffer from the more volatility then the market as they are too under diversified with their stake too over concentrated in a firm. Employees should not put their eggs instruments and salary into one basket. Thus, this will lead to the undervaluing of options by the employees. This shows that options are wasted on employees. Market Paranoia Stock options compensation may also lead to the market being deeply suspicious of the corporation. When top executives are paid in stock options compensation, they get huge compensation packages which are hidden away from public scrutiny. Furthermore, stock options also dilute shareholders. Management may also manipulate the market before the stock options grant date to get a better deal for themselves which would lead to excess volatility. • 44. The University s Lick Observatory, Planet Hunter Team As a member that is part of the UC s Lick Observatory Planet Hunter Team, I have found a possible planetary system that may contain a planet. From my further research, I discovered that the planet may support life, such as bacteria and plants. After confirming with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute about intelligent life, I eventually decided to want to discuss intelligent life through a scientific process. I will use the Drake Equation to give us the possibility that intelligent life can emit signals to reveal any existence. The equation is given as N= R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L. The calculations of each variables will help me understand what is being contributed into calculating the chance of any signals being detected and the calculated result will determined the conclusion of intelligent life existing. Nevertheless, this is just an estimation for the possibility of any life as the Drake Equation may or may not be as reliable as we may expect it to be. Calculations Step 1. I know that there are 7 new stars formed yearly in the galaxy, the number of stars is represented by R*. This is the annual rate of star formation that is adaptable for any life. So R* will equal 7 new stars formed every year. R* = 7 new stars formed every year Step 2. There is a 100% chance that if there are stars, then there has to exist planetary systems. So, R* = 7 new stars annually and fp = 1/1 relationship between stars and planetary systems or 1. Next, I take 7 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Examples Of Inhumanity In Tuesdays With Morrie Where would the world be without humanity? Would it be laying in ruins because of needless wars fought? Perhaps there would be a so called master race that exterminated any person that slightly deviated from what was deemed perfect. Maybe there would be no more humans left at all. Humanity binds the human race together. The caring for other people and not just thinking about yourself. The word is humanity, and the root of that is human. This concept is central to all our beliefs. Just like a coin though, there is a flip side. Inhumanity, when humans do not act like regular humans. To be described as inhuman a person has to be extremely nefarious. These people that commit inhuman acts upon others are treated as monsters, and by all rights are monsters. Both of the books we read this semester dealt with humanity and inhumanity. Although one book clearly had a lot more inhumanity in it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Compare And Contrast Ancient Persia And India Compare and Contrast Ancient Persia and India It is crazy how two different civilizations from two different times can have such similar ideas about their economies. But, India, becoming an empire much later than Persia, had some improved technologies and ideas which made these two civilizations somewhat different. Persia s main focus of strengthening their economy was the development of agriculture. By growing crops like grains, fruits, and vegetables, the Persians were able to acquire a great amount of food, making the population grow and grow. Fortunately, their location helped them conquer smaller civilizations so they can gain fertile soil, which is extremely important in agriculture. The abundance of food that the Persians had helped them trade with other civilizations that couldn t grow the crops they needed. In return they would receive items that they needed to help their economy grow. Persia s main trade route was the Persian Royal Road, which was about 1500 miles long. To transport themselves to deliver a message or items to trade with, the Persians would have intervals along the road and one horse would pull one man until he reaches his stop. It would take about nine days to travel the whole road using couriers, while on footy it would have taken them three months, making trade and communication very slow. Persia did have a social class, with the royal family on top, and of course, the slaves at the bottom. Slaves were a very big part in the labor systems of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Martin Luther King Justice And Injustice Essay One wonders if justice is a product of rational thinking or is it merely an evolved primal mode of survival of our ancestors reflecting in their use of discriminating judgment as they moved from place to place, facing the challenges of their times? His desires, needs, and ambitions, being limited, he was content in flowing with the moment; moral rightness was natural to him.The prehistoric man hunted when he was hungry, sought shelter when he felt the need to rest or save himself from the onslaught of the inclement weather or prey; using only as much natural resources as in its complete rightfulness. He took from nature only as much as he needed and not going beyond his needs; thereby preserving the environment, and knowingly or unknowingly exhibited a certain sense of creating a rightful environment; the need to preserve nature and not destroy it unlike the example of oil ... This perhaps should be the motivation for every person to think and act right; directing their desires towards the right path. Henry David Thoreau asserts that it is more important to develop a respect for the right, rather than a respect for law, for people s obligations are to do what is right (Jacobus 306 307). • 49. Specific Environmental Effects Of Environmental Effects On... Laboratory 7: Environmental Effects on Enzyme Activity BI 185 03 BY Charlie Kane 10/24/17 Abstract During this experiment we tested the effects that specific environmental conditions have on the enzyme, peroxidase. Through this experiment we developed an understanding of enzymes and their functions. By exposing the enzymes to different environments, we observed a changed in their activity. In order for us to measure these changes we used the technique of spectrophotometry, meaning we used a spectrophotometer, which measures the amount of light a chemical can absorb. In our findings we discovered that certain environmental factors such as pH, temperature, boiling do have an affect on enzyme activity. In conclusion the five null hypothesis were proven to be incorrect. Introduction Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells. They could be found in every living thing. Enzymes increase the rate at which chemical reactions occur. A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy required. They are proteins made up of several amino acids. Each enzyme is different due to its structure, it all has different amino acid sequence. An enzymes ability to function depends on it s environment. These factors include temperature, denaturation, pH, the size , the shape, and the amount of enzymes present. Enzymes performs best at ph7. That is the same pH as blood , the more enzymes stray away from pH7 the weaker it becomes , the active site gets damaged. This makes the enzyme not active, no longer functional. When it comes to temperature enzymes at a certain temperature have maximum activity. As temperature increases the enzyme activity also increases. When enzymes reach their maximum activity level and the temperature is still increasing it will start to decline (denaturation). The rate of reaction also depends on how much enzymes are present. We tested 5 hypothesis which were the amount of enzyme does not alter the rate of a reaction. pH does not influence the rate of an enzyme reaction. Temperature does not influence the rate of an enzyme activity. Boiling an enzyme before a reaction does not influence enzyme activity. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
