Water in a Frozen Arctic: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives
1. 14 March 2024
USAPECS is composed of polar scientists in locations spanning the United States whose research is focused on both poles and other high alpine
areas. We acknowledge that much of that science takes place on the often-unceded traditional territories and ancestral homelands of Indigenous
Peoples, and that much of the science done in these locations has historical roots in colonialism. With this land acknowledgment, we celebrate the
key role Indigenous Peoples have played and continue to play in increasing human understanding of the polar regions and recognize the
sophisticated and intricate knowledge systems Indigenous Peoples have developed and continue to develop in relation to their lands.
Webinar Team: Zachary Labe (he/him), Claire Moffett (she/her), Kristen Rahilly (she/her), and Susan Vanek (she/her)

Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives
2. What is USAPECS?
• USAPECS: national committee representing United States members
of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS)
• APECS: an international and interdisciplinary organization for
undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers,
early faculty members, educators, and others with interests in polar
regions and the wider cryosphere
• Our aims:
○ To stimulate interdisciplinary and international research
collaborations, and develop effective future leaders in polar
research, education, and outreach
○ To ensure all of our actions and collaborations are inherently
focused on and informed by Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and
Accessibility (IDEA) principles. This includes advocating on
behalf of our members in regard to pressing issues in polar
research at a national and international level
3. Webinar Code of Conduct
USAPECS wants to create and foster a welcoming, safe, productive and
inclusive environment. All participants are asked to remain respectful of
others thoughts and opinions and keep an open mind throughout the
meeting. If at any time you have any concerns we encourage you to reach
out to one of the meeting coordinators.
Please type all questions or comments you have into the chat feature.
Moderators will communicate them to the speaker after the presenters are
finished speaking. We ask that you remain muted at all times to reduce
background noise.

Heavy precipitation and other thawing events are increasing
around the Arctic and global climate models project that
these extremes will only continue to increase in likelihood
over the next few decades. This virtual event will feature
different perspectives on the changing water cycle around the
Arctic with a focus on its causes, impacts, and implications for
the region and the globe.
The online event will include short presentations from four
leading early career polar researchers that are actively
working to expand our understanding of the many
far-reaching societal and physical impacts of an increasingly
wetter and warmer Arctic.
