We missed Haleakala volcano but did see orchids in the wild and a pretty angry ocean also the Maui Ocean Center. Kapalua Village hikes are great on a windy day.
1. Haleakala National Park – A Bust
We started early to drive the park
and hike to the volcano overlook.
Thankfully, we did not book the
sunrise tour. When we reached the
Visitor Center the rain was
horizontal. The temperature was
about 39 degrees. When we
reached the parking lot to hike to
view the volcano it was the same
only foggier and even colder.
(9,740 ft. elev.) The ranger
informed us most of the lower
trails were flooded. We hiked in
the rain anyway and enjoyed see
the happy ducks.
2. We should have realized the clouds that always obscured our view of the Haleakala
volcano meant something about the weather. Back in Kihei it was 80 degrees. (A 40-
degree change.) We enjoyed a beach walk and the sunset.
3. Trade winds made it windy and cool (67) in Kihei. We drove to Kapalua and hiked the inland village walking
trails rather than the coastal trail. It rained several times followed by more rainbows than we’ve ever seen in
one day. The inland trails were hot and humid.
