WORD DEFINITION EXAMPLE
1. adjective (n)
A word or phrase naming an attribute, added to, or grammatically related to
a noun to modify or describe it.
An adjective is a word that modifies or
describes a noun or pronoun.
2. advantage (n)
A condition or circumstance that puts one in a favorable or superior
position.
Companies with a computerized
database are at an advantage.
3. air (n)
The invisible gaseous substance surrounding the earth, a mixture mainly of
oxygen and nitrogen.
The fresh morning air blew gently in
my face.
4. airplane (n)
A powered flying vehicle with fixed wings and a weight greater than that
of the air it displaces.
The patient had recently arrived via
airplane from South Africa.
5. alibi (n)
A claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an act,
especially a criminal one, is alleged to have taken place.
She has an alibi for the whole of
yesterday evening.
6. alphabet (n)
A set of letters or symbols in a fixed order, used to represent the basic
sounds of a language; in particular, the set of letters from A to Z.

7. angry (adj)
Having a strong feeling against someone who has behaved badly, making
you want to shout at them or hurt them.

8. animal (n)
One of five kingdoms (= groups) into which living things are divided, the
members of which have many cells, have the ability to control their own

the sun.

9. answer (n) Something said or written in reaction to a question or statement.

18. backpack (n)
A large bag used to carry things on your back, used especially by people
who go camping or walking.
It is a frame backpack with a belt and
padded shoulder straps.
19. baggage (n) Bags, cases, etc. That you take with you when you travel.

20. bakery (n) A place where bread and cakes are made and sometimes sold. I went to the bakery to buy some bread.
21. baseball (n)
A game played especially in North America by two teams of nine players,
in which a player hits a ball with a bat (= stick) and tries to run around four
bases on a large field before the other team returns the ball.
Jake never played baseball like the
other kids.
22. basket (n)
A light container, often with a handle, that is made of thin strips of wood,
metal, or plastic twisted together, used for carrying or storing things.
A laundry/clothes basket.
23. beautiful (adj)
Having an attractive quality that gives pleasure to those who experience it
or think about it.
I thought she was the most beautiful
woman I had ever seen.
24. bed (n)
A large, rectangular piece of furniture, often with four legs, used for
sleeping on.

today.
25. Belgium (n) A country in western Europe. Last year, we went to Belgium.
26. bicycle (n)
A two-wheeled vehicle that you sit on and move by turning the two pedals
(= flat parts you press with your feet).

27. bike (v) To use a motorcycle to take something to someone.

28. birthday (n) The day that is an exact year or number of years after a person was born. Today is my mother’s 49th birthday.
29. black eye (n) An area of skin around the eye that has gone dark because it has been hit.
He had a fight at school and came home
with a black eye.
30. bone (n) Any of the hard parts inside a human or animal that make up its frame.
The child was so thin that you could see
her bones.
31. bought (v) To get something by paying money for it. He bought his mother some flowers.
32. box (n) A square or rectangular container with stiff sides and sometimes a lid. He ate a whole box of chocolates.
33. boy (n) A male child or, more generally, a male of any age.
As a young boy, my father used to walk
three miles to school.

34. breakfast (n) A meal eaten in the morning as the first meal of the day.
We had scrambled eggs and toast for

A situation in which something bad, unpleasant, or dangerous almost
happens, but you manage to avoid it.
Getting to the airport on time was a
close call.
55. coffee (n)
A dark brown powder with a strong flavor and smell that is made by
crushing dark beans from a tropical bush and used to make a drink.
This coffee is incredibly smooth and
rich.
56. common sense (n)
The basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to
help us live in a reasonable and safe way.
Windsurfing is perfectly safe as long as
you use some common sense.
57. computer (n)
An electronic machine that is used for storing, organizing, and finding
words, numbers, and pictures, for doing calculations, and for controlling
other machines.
All our customer orders are handled by
computer.
58. cottage (n) A small house, usually in the countryside.
They have just bought a darling little
cottage.
59. cotton candy (n)
A large soft ball of white or pink sugar in the form of thin threads, usually
sold on a stick and eaten at fairs and amusement parks.

Land that is not in towns, cities, or industrial areas and is either used for
farming or left in its natural condition.

A set of classes or a plan of study on a particular subject, usually leading to

62. cousin (n)
A child of a person's aunt or uncle, or, more generally, a distant (= not
close) relation.

63. crocodile (n)
A large reptile with a hard skin that lives in and near rivers and lakes in
hot, wet parts of the world. It is like an alligator, but it usually has a longer
and narrower nose.

64. dangerous (adj) Able or likely to cause harm or death, or unpleasant problems. The men are armed and dangerous.
65. daughter (n) A female child in relation to her parents. We have a little daughter.
66. daytime (n)
The period between the time when the sun rises and the time it goes down,
or the part of the day that is neither evening nor night.

study at night.

A choice that you make about something after thinking about several
possibilities.

The belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of
government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected

70. doctor (n)
A person with a medical degree whose job is to treat people who are sick or
hurt.

hunt or guard things.

To copy or move programs or information into a computer's memory,

A store where you can buy medications, makeup, and other things such as
candy.

many other parts of the world.

A way of helping someone to understand something by showing them how
it is used.

An event at which objects such as paintings are shown to the public, a

104. French fries (n) Long, thin pieces of fried potato. I love French fries.
105. Friday (n) The day of the week after Thursday and before Saturday. Should we go to the cinema on Friday?

A person who you know well and who you like a lot, but who is usually not
a member of your family.

A small animal that has smooth skin, lives in water and on land, has long

The soft part containing seeds that is produced by a plant. Many types of

A piece of land, usually in a yard next to a house, where you grow flowers
and vegetables.

A person who is admired for having done something very brave or having

A school for children who are about 15 to 18 years old that is usually
