A Positive Role Model
I have had many positive role models in my life including parents, coaches, and teachers. Yet, as I
grow older I notice myself modeling my behavior more and more after my grandfather. I owe my
intense competitive drive to genetics and exposure to an encouraging environment. Part of this
environment was witnessing first hand what my grandpa was able to accomplish from a young age.
My grandfather, Charles William Taylor, grew up in a single parent household in a small, northern
Minnesota farm town. Having personally visited Crookston, the desire to move out of this isolated
area would be reason enough to become as successful as possible, and head to Boston. He was the
buzz of the town... a star athlete, high jump state champion, and the football and basketball captain at
his high school. Bill Taylor would be the first (and only) person from Crookston to attend Harvard
College.

Grandpa appreciated my sense of ambition and was even a bit flattered by the fact that I idolize him.
But, he gave me a piece of advice that changed my mindset entirely. He advised me to use this time to
be my own person, do what I love, and be who I want to be. That is exactly what my grandpa did,
taking initiative to be a three sport athlete at Harvard. He also said to enjoy the fact that I get to
surround myself with intelligent new friends from all over the globe. Coming from a small town,
Grandpa was exposed to more diversity than he had ever been. He still keeps in contact with his
college friends such as David Rockefeller and his football friends after all these years. Lastly, he
advised me to develop the skills to be able to compete with my peers in order to better each other. No
matter what field I decide to go into teamwork will be a key component in the workplace and in

Financial Analysis Of CFO
This paper reports on an analysis of a survey of 1,050 CFOs in firms across 39 different countries in
December, 2008 with the goal of examining the actions taken by firms that were financially
constrained in juxtaposition with those that were not financially constrained. They utilize the
distinction between constrained and unconstrained to determine how company plans pertaining to
employment, marketing, technology spending, and other facets of their business are impacted.
Additionally, they examine company financial policies and corporate spending behavior to shed light
on instances when investment strategies may have been impacted by financial constraint. Prior
research on the topic primarily used data from publicly available financial ... Show more content on

In order to distinguish the various confounding factors that may impact the responses from firms that
are financially constrained or unconstrained, Campello, Graham, and Harvey use the methods of
Abadie and Imbens (2002) and Dehejia and Wahba (2002) and match their firms according to size,
industry, ownership structure, credit score, profitability, whether or not they pay a dividend, and
prospects for future growth. In this manner, they analyze financially constrained firms (as the
treatment group) with the constructed counterfactual firms that were not financially constrained (the
control group). Per the survey, firms could categorize themselves as not affected, somewhat affected,
or very affected by credit conditions. The authors found that there was little to no relationship between
the size and financial constraint as well as between the ownership structure and financial constraint.
Most CFOs expected high growth prospects regardless of their declaration regarding the impact of
credit markets. They attempted to find the nature of the constraints by asking about credit availability,
higher costs of external funds, and ability to access new

The Great Depression And President Roosevelt s New Deal
The 1930s, historically remembered for the Great Depression and President Roosevelt s New Deal,
demonstrated a time of great racial tension and segregation in America. Slavery dissolved and the Ku
Klux Klan became less popular; the struggle of African Americans, however, was not over. Racial
segregation thrived with half of African Americans out of work, their jobs transfered to whites who
were struggling from the Great Depression ( Race During the Great Depression ). The New Deal,
created to promote equality and produce jobs, proved largely ineffective on the front of desegregation,
doing little to help the black American community. One place that African Americans were able to
prosper: jazz. However, even the jazz community itself remained segregated. Racial prejudice came
from both fronts: whites did not want to mix socially with Negroes, and blacks believed that when a
Negro enters a White band, he loses his identity as a Negro musician ( DownBeat Dodges the Racial
Issue ). Benny Goodman, however, broke this barrier, initially in 1935 with the first interracial jazz
performance, and again in his 1938 Carnegie Hall concert featuring black musicians. Benny Goodman
s career did not commence with the Trio s 1935 performance; a clarinet player from a young age,
Goodman initiated his professional career in 1925 as a member of the Ben Pollack Orchestra. During
his time with the orchestra, he recorded his first solo on the song He s the Last Word. In 1931, Benny

Egg Drop Lab Report
Introduction The objective of this project was to create a structure that will protect a raw egg and
prevent it from breaking when being dropped from a minimum height of two meters. A decent
hypothesis or prediction one could develop before any experimental trials would be as follows. The
structure that provides the longest duration of impact between the falling egg the ground will provide
the desired results of an undamaged egg. The duration of time in which the ground applies a force to
the egg carrying structure is referred to as impulse. The longer the span of impact time, the more mild

Conclusion
After viewing the trials of drops, multiple flaws were highlighted in many designs of the lab
participants. One flaw that could have been improved on was more even distribution of straws
surrounding the egg compartment, rather than overbuilding on one side. This could be solved by
building symmetrically. Another noticeable flaw was the reckless flight patterns of designs

Woman At Point Zero Analysis
In Nawal El Saadawi s book Woman at Point Zero and a Hausa story from northern Nigeria called
Yamira, Atafa, and the King have both main characters that go through the a similar childhood
obstacle, even though Saadawi s book is about a real woman while the Nigerian story is on a fictional
character. The technique of masculinity is presented in various stories, such as Yamira, Atafa, and the
King and Saadawi s book Woman at Point Zero, which are further analyzed in this essay, which not
only state what is definition of a masculine man but also shows how men standards influence the way
society looks upon woman, which creates the ideal woman.

In this story, Yamira is still a boy, about to go through his puberty rite of passage. Yamira already these
traits of aggressiveness, powerful and confidence, and it is explicitly shown in this scene because after
ignoring her all these times, he wants to marry her. He insisted to stop running away from him which
proves that Yamira is confident enough and that he is going to do all he can to marry this girl. Also this
scene display the power of Yamira, for being a boy/man along for being a prince, that he can arrange a
marriage whom whoever he wants. These traits show dominance over women. Women are forced to
do what men want them to, especially in older times when tradition was important to the society.
Marriage is an example of what young girls in Africa and around the world have to experience
because of traditions. In the article The Negative Consequences of Dowry Payment on Women and
Society by Emily Onyango, the author mentions that young girls are not only forced into marriage but
they are seen as property. When women are treated as property, they have no dignity... This means that
parents will not give the girls education, but marry them off instead (Onyango 3). All of the dreams of
a girl can t be accomplish because they forced into marriage for money. However, a boy can get his
education and move on in life because of his gender.

The Importance Of Class Struggle In Hamlet
Throughout history, class distributions have constantly been a serious issue. Many compositions today
display social disparity; however, to recognize it, one needs to look through the proper lens. Literary
critical lenses help to understand a work from a different angle which leads to a further interpretation
of the composition. There are many lenses and aspects in literature, and one of them is the Marxist
Theory. Also known as the Conflict Theory, this idea asserts that class struggle is a powerful divider in
society. Although it is a social idea, this concept also relates to literature. In his play Hamlet, William
Shakespeare demonstrates class struggles. Looking at this composition through the lens of the Marxist
Theory, one uncovers that the dominant ones suppress and exploits the others seeking to display their
superiority. Class struggle is noticeable in Hamlet. The royals exploit the lower class to satisfy their
ambitions. People from the working class carry out the Aristocrats commands and they hold an
insignificant rank in their society. The Aristocrats notably Hamlet, Claudius, and even Gertrude
oppress others to obtain what they want and show that they are superior. Claudius poisons his own
brother and marries Gertrude to have a stronger chance at being king since she is the imperial
jointress, to the throne; he does not marry Gertrude because he loves her; he is using her to obtain the
power (I.ii.9). Even when he gets the throne, he still wants more power and seeks to murder Hamlet
because the prince knows his secret. Claudius also uses Guildenstern and Rosencrantz to spy on his
nephew. The men carry out his orders without protest; they are like an ape, in the corner of/ [Claudius
] jaw; the king is using them to find out the reason for Hamlet s sudden madness and when he will get
what he wants; he will get rid them (IV.ii.18 19). Claudius uses Laertes to get rid of Hamlet because
he wants his nephew to remain inferior to him because the people of Denmark love Hamlet and they
will want him as their ruler; Hamlet is a menace to Claudius and an obstruction between him and the
ultimate power.
Gertrude also portrays Marxism. She does not delay long after her former husband s death to marry

How A Carbon Footprint Is The Total Amount Of Greenhouse...
According to timeforchange.org, a carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced
to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon
dioxide. Before starting this project I was unaware of what a carbon footprint was but as I learned
more about it I was interested to see what mine would be. The first section to calculate my carbon
footprint was how much energy I consume. As a freshman in college living in a dorm I use $600
worth of electricity which is a total of 2.82 tonnes of CO2e. Next was flights. Over the past year I
have taken one vacation and it was to Providencials Turks and Caicos. It was a direct flight that took
me from JFK airport to an airport in Turks and Caicos. This trip used .41 tonnes of CO2e. The third
section was cars. I drive a Mercedes Benz GLK 350 4 matic that I drove everyday to school and
dance, both in Ocean City, New Jersey. It is about 10 miles from my house to Ocean City High School
and I would go to dance everyday after school which was right around the corner. For the entire school
year this added up to be 4,080 miles. In the summer I also worked in Ocean City which ended up
being the same amount of miles. These car rides plus a few extra ones I put in 9,000 miles for my
miles driven. This total was one of my highest ones with 4.87 tonnes being used. I never use
motorbikes or public transportation so that gave me a total of 0 tonnes for the two of them. That is a
huge benefit to

Car Mount Advantages And Disadvantages
Car Mounts Car mounts are specifically designed to have your mobile device in a place where it can
be seen so that firstly it can be used as a mapping device and secondly because of the stringent hands
free laws that you can see who is calling and at the same time be able to talk to the person who has
called. Once it has been mounted you are also able to touch the screen which allows you to carry out
basic commands while you are driving. The smartphone technology is trending to voice commands
and having it mounted in front of you will make it a lot easier when you are driving. Features Most
people will buy a universal cell phone car mount because that way the whole family can use the
device and you will not be restricted to use one phone a consideration if you decide to upgrade. You
need to consider the type of mounting mechanism the car mount uses as they vary. The car mount will
either be a suction type for the windshield or dashboard or will clip onto the front ventilator so it is up

the unbearable lightness of being Essay
The Unheard Voice of Commitment nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; What the reader understands of the
infidelity of Milan Kundera s characters in The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a mere distraction
from the real substance of the story and of the character s real purpose. Kundera offers the reader a red
herring and only through close examination can one dissect and abstract the true essence of each
character s thread that links them to one another in this story. For it is not clearly seen: in fact, it can
not be seen at all. It is the fierce absence of the word commitment that is so blatantly seen in each
individual, yet the word itself is buried so deeply inside of Tomas and Tereza that it takes an animal s

Her feeling was rather that, given the nature of the human couple, the love of man and woman is a
priori inferior to that which can exist (at least in the best instances) in the love between man and dog,
that oddity of human history probably unplanned by the creator (297). Tereza knew as the dog lay
dying that the reason why she snuggled so close to Karenin was her commitment. That same
commitment was the reason why she still slept next to Tomas every night. Love, whether we perceive
it or not, has a hold that stitches souls together in the patchwork of life. It was not until after the dog s
death that Tomas grasped this idea as well. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Karenin proved to be a
symbol of Tomas and Tereza s marriage and the prospect of death seemed to inevitably doom the
marriage. Tereza understood that Karenin s commitment to please was the reason why the dog held on.
Kundera s following passage reflects this, It was sad, what she said, yet without realizing it they were
happy. They were happy not in spite of their sadness but thanks to it. They were holding hands and
both had the same image in their eyes: a limping dog who represented ten years of their lives (293). In
the existence of a dog there was a light. This light did not fade when the dog s existence was ceased,
yet grew brighter in the eyes of a man. Tomas learned that in his years of endless escapades and
rendevous with strange woman, was his resistence to love and commitment to Tereza. He

Creon Influence On Antigone
Antigone, one of the Three Theban Plays, which was translated by Robert Fagles, was set in Thebes,
ancient Greece. It is an example of how much power can go to someone s head one they have it.
Creon, the king, had banned anyone from burying one of Antigone s brothers because he was said to
be a traitor. Antigone wanted her brother wanted to be buried with the rest of her family, and so she
rebels against the king and buries her brother, even when her sister advises her not to. In the end,
everyone passes away besides Creon to sit in agony. In the play, Creon s power had left him arrogant
and cold In the beginning, he was very hard headed and set on pride, but towards the end his attitude
had changed around, along with controlled by fate. In

Critical Analysis of Transformers the Movie
There is an old saying that there is an 8 year old child inside every person, Transformers is just the

Bay s actioner hits a new peak for CGI work, showcasing spectacular chases and animated

There are approximately 630 visual effects shots in the film that had to be shot individual shots in
order to capture the proper theme of the storyline. Technical advancements were made in
environments, lighting, and simulation of physical effects and integration of CG characters in a real
environment. This movie was a true success through the use of well known actors, and by using
proper voice over acting throughout this film. Actors such as Tyrese Gibson (SGT Epps), Magan Fox
(Mikaela Banes), and John Keller (John Turturro) just to name a few of the actors that made this
movie a huge success. The reason acting played a significant role in the accomplishment of this movie
was because they had to act without having the most significant actors being present, the Transformers
themselves. All the acting conducted in this movie had to be conducted without the use of real robot
actors and most by standing in front of blue screens. By the use of editing the theatrical scenes were
superimposed into the background of the acting conducted. It took a team of editors and computer
programmers in order to accomplish this mission. This leads us into our second topic for discussion,
the type and style of directing along with how this movie was edited. The director of Transformers ,
Michael Bay , is a very hands on director. He is known for his ability to tell challenging stories

Louis Armstrong Concert Analysis
Watching Louis Armstrong s live performance in Berlin during the year 1965 was a pleasure,
especially because I am a great fan of his music. Throughout the concert in Berlin, Armstrong and his
chamber orchestra played 13 different pieces. With the exception of Jewel Woods entrance on vocals
for two songs, the makeup of the chamber orchestra did not change throughout the concert. As a
result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpet remained vital parts of each song
throughout the concert.
Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, Sleepy Time Down South, before formally
introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the tempo was
consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the opportunity to
each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion.
Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco and
was named Indiana. In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the
performer s immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from
beginning to end.
After Indiana was performed, the chamber orchestra transitioned to a more dolce and pesante Black
and Blue. Throughout this song, each performer played softly, keeping the dynamic at a piano level
until Armstrong s trumpet began to raise the dynamic to a more mezzo piano level. The song s

Causes and effects of Climate Change.
General purpose: to inform.
Specific purpose: After hearing my speech, my audience will know more what climate change is, what
causes it and its effects now and in the future.
Thesis Statement: Climate change is a very important issue that affects all of us, we need to know
more about this issue.
Organization pattern: Cause and effect.
Introduction:
I. (Attention getter): When you look at yourself in a dirty mirror; can you see your image very well?
No. The same occurs when the sun rays reflect on the sea and that reflection can t be released into the
space because gasses in the atmosphere block their exit causing the planet to get warmer.
II. Climate change is how the weather has changed in a specific area over a given period of time
usually 30 years. That means that changes in the weather could be variable or extreme depends on the
region you are. We are seeing these changes every year as the seasons change; I.e. Usually we
compare the weather of the season this year and the weather of the season from the past year.
III. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Climate change
encompasses global warming, it refers to the broad range of changes that are happening to our planet.
That means the reason of Climate Change is because the planet is getting warmer and this heat is

This research paper would like to enlighten you with the idea that in the reading of Soft Soaping

linked immediately to the dominant social dialogue of its time, which is here an imperial point of
view. In order to accomplish her attempt, soap is an intelligent choice. As she mentions several times
throughout her essay, soap is a highly portable commodity relating to hygiene. It is a very personal
item, yet it was one of the first big advertisement campaign s main subject. Hygiene is one of the
important signs of western civilization; therefore, soap s relation to hygiene creates a natural bond

since the soap was a handy and inexpensive commodity that filled a gap in the domestic market, it

of the classical features of such advertisements is the black kids, who are getting washed, and another
one is absence of women. With those advertisements on the boxes of commodities, these discourses

Stereotypes In Sonny s Blues By James Baldwin
Stereotypes play a tremendous role in society. These popular, fixed, and oversimplified ideas
concerning different demographics can affect the way particular groups are viewed and how they
might act. This is because stereotypes often lead to circumstances that a person must face due to their
social identity. In James Baldwin s short story Sonny s Blues, the character Sonny reflects Claude M.
Steele s concept of identity contingencies found in a chapter from Whistling Vivaldi through his
academic, economic, and social statuses. Regardless of Sonny s difficulties, he strives to refute the
stereotype a black man living in the United States of America during the 1950 s typically has and the
contingencies that accompany it. In the chapter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

not sure I m going to do anything (Baldwin 252). However, after the death of the narrator s daughter,
he decides to write Sonny. The reader can infer that the reason this resolution occurred might be
because the narrator saw the importance of cherishing those around you, before the opportunity is
missed. In A Broader View of Identity, the author showed that a southerner might experience social
avoidance when his accent is heard at a New England cocktail party (Steele 68). This is relatable to
Sonny s situation where his brother avoided him possibly because of his heroin

Plato’s 1st Argument for the Immortality of the Soul from...
Plato s 1st argument for the Immortality of the Soul from opposites and Theory of Reincarnation Plato
s Phaedo is a dialog between Phaedo, Cebes and Simmias where Socrates gives some arguments for
the immortality of the soul. In this work, Phaedo tells us about Socrates final days, who has been
convicted to death. Great philosopher does not have a fear of death because he believes that when a
man dies, the soul still exists even if the body perishes. Trying to prove his arguments, Socrates
presents two proofs Doctrine of Opposites and second which is based on Theory of Recollections. In

People from these denominations do believe in concept of rebirth. But religious sects such as
Christianity, Islam and Judaism do not believe in theory of reincarnation. This theory is very close to
Plato and some other Greek philosophers who believe in the Immortality of the soul. As for me, in
some cases I do agree with Plato in Theory of Opposites. Undoubtedly, in our world we can always
find two opposite things, actions, etc. Small and tall people, healthy and unhealthy people, sunny and
cloudy day, hot and cold weather... But I do not believe in the Immortality of the soul in general. To
my mind Plato came to this conclusion due to the times he lives in. But we cannot base our beliefs on
what we want to be true; the truth can be found by weighing the evidence for a given idea. Thus, he
took what he knew to be true at the time and formulated his opinions which were founded on that
knowledge. I guess, if Plato lived nowadays, may be he would approach to another conclusion. I do
not think that Plato makes credible arguments for the immortality of the soul. To my mind, his
concepts were built on his desires. I mean, that life is difficult and awkward enough without knowing

Institutionalized Inequalities
Institutionalized inequalities, a societal prejudice against others through a community or organization,
is a prevalent issue within the novel, The Bluest Eye , written by Toni Morrison. The use of racial
discrimination, gender roles, and class structures construct these inequalities, and illustrates the
immoral high road that institutions in the 20th century would follow along. Pecola Breedlove, the
main character and the person who falls to victim most frequently, endures numerous setbacks and
obstacles that contribute to the analysis on how The Bluest Eye creates such disparities. As Wall
would put it, in a society ordered by hierarchies of power based on race, class, and gender, no one is
more powerless hence more vulnerable than a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of an institution that promotes internalized racism would be the school in which Claudia,
Pecola, and Frieda attend. Maureen Peal, the new kid to the neighborhood, arrives with her head held
high on top of her even higher horse. Maureen is a light skinned African American middle classed girl
who is held to the highest regard around school, and who kicks those of whom are darker and poorer
to the curb. As we have discussed before, there is a scene in which Maureen offers to walk home with
Claudia and her sister Frieda. The walk is interrupted abruptly after running into a crying Pecola in the
center of a circle of male classmates taunting her. The boys shout slurs at her about her father and her
skin tone, completely disregarding that they themselves were black, or that their father had similarly
relaxed habits (65) In regards to internalized racism, Morrison states that they seemed to have taken
all of their smoothly cultivated ignorance, their exquisitely learned self hatred, their elaborately
designed hopelessness and sucked it all up into a fiery cone of scorn that had burned for ages in the
hollows of their minds. (65) Maureen stands idly by while Claudia and Frieda help in saving Pecola
from the ruthlessness of the African American boys who hate her for something they all have in
common, but the boys finish their taunting because of the stigma surrounding Maureen and her light
skin. Maureen takes this time to console Pecola, walking the girls towards the ice cream parlor, and
pretending to be anything but sinister. The gears switch, Maureen starts bombarding Pecola with
questions of her naked father, and in the end regards Pecola as black and ugly while regarding herself
as light and cute. Exposing the African American community of a deep seeded hatred in their
community towards the blackest sheep.

The Origins of Russia Essay
The Origins of Russia
The country of Russia: enormous, expansive, wide open. The words that describe this Euro Asian
country can be attributed to its origins from its Slavic inhabitants and the takeover by the Varangians.
Kievan Russia, as it was called, started its own civilization in the year 862. The problem with the
origin of the Russian State is that it is exceedingly complex and many theories are based on
circumstantial evidence. A good example of this is the early history of the plains above the Black Sea.
This region compromises the center of the Kievan State, yet much is unknown about these parts due to
the lack of resources. Archaeological finds suggest many ideas, all of which are unconfirmed. The

The Scythians lived peacefully until the third century BCE. During that time, they were overcome by
another nomadic tribe, the Sarmatians. Less than twenty five years after the Sarmatians conquered the
Scythians, the Goths superseded the Sarmatians. The Goths were groups of uncivilized people who
strengthened their kingdoms by keeping them in a state of terror. They were of Germanic descent, and
reached the pinnacle of their strength during the early fourth century. Following the Goths were the
Huns and the Avars. Meanwhile, the Slavs in the fifth century CE emerged and moved southward to
come in contact with the East Roman Empire. The Slavs were split into three groups, called the Antae,
Sclaveni, and the Venedi. Most historical references do not pay much attention to the Antic tribes,
probably because of their disappearance in the late sixth century. The Sclaveni and Venedi joined and
created a unified East Slavic empire. This Slavic kingdom slowly began to increase during the late
700s. The area that was held by the Avars in the 790s was demolished through Charlemagne s
destruction of their empire. With that, the Slavic people began to migrate down to what is now Kiev.
At Kiev, they encountered additional tribes such as the Finno Ugrians, Bulgars, and Khazars. The
Finno Ugrians could be broken down into smaller less civilized tribes, though their counterparts, the
Bulgars and the Khazars, were much more refined.

The Many Characteristics, Factors, And Style Features That...
There are many characteristics, factors, and style features that are considered when building or adding
additions to a college. Mid nineteenth century many colleges were attacked by educators, politicians,
and writers, stating that the traditional college was irrelevant to contemporary needs (Turner Campus,
An American Planning Tradition, 129). It was established that the traditional colleges were out of date
and with a democratic reform there would be changes to the traditional college that would lead to a
new method of collegiate learning and open doors for higher education.
The traditional college was built for professional men; their purpose was not to educate millions, there
soon became a call for democratic reform. Overtime the public wanted training from these institutions,
and there was a call for a People s College (Turner, 129). During this time agricultural colleges were
having trouble attracting students and deciding what an agricultural college should be, they were
struggling with their identity and reverting to more traditional forms of education. Wabash Manual
Labor College in Indiana dropped the Manual Labor from it s name, as a result the college erected
large and impressive buildings in the fashionable styles of the day such as Italianate (Turner, 131). At
the same time scientific and technical schools were making better progress. At these early stages of
agricultural and scientific education, the appropriate architecture was decided, it was to

Death Penalty Essay
Thesis
It is more reasonable to utilize the death penalty than to abolish it. The death penalty should not be
abolished because (1) it deters people from committing murder and (2) because the death penalty
gives peace of mind to the victims and their families and puts an end to the crime.
Arguments for the thesis
(1) The death penalty should not be abolished because the fear of the highest form of punishment will
keep potential victims alive.
(2) The death penalty should not be abolished because the families of the victims can only begin the
healing process once the murderer is put to death.

(1) Most murders happen in the passion of the moment, however, serial killers, burglars, gang
members, and others who plan their crime in advance can and do think of the possibilities. Many
criminals don t carry weapons while committing crimes, for example, to keep from killing, as Senator
Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania recalls:
My twelve years experience in the Philadelphia District Attorney s Office convinced me that the death
penalty is a deterrent to crime. I saw many cases where professional burglars and robbers refused to
carry weapons, for fear that a killing would occur and they would be charged with murder in the first
degree, carrying the death penalty.(2)
Because the death penalty is final and more feared than imprisonment, it deters some prospective
murderers not deterred by the thought of imprisonment.
Abolitionist s main argument is that capitol punishment can t remove the evil from society. No matter
what the juridical laws that a country holds, heinous crimes will haunt and spread fear throughout as
long as mankind is on this earth. There have been numerous studies that have concluded that the death
penalty is not a deterrent. One of which is from the National Academy of Sciences. They concluded: it

A Brief Note On Canada s Labour Force
Collective bargaining was not just a means of raising wages and improving working conditions. It was
a demand by organized workers for a new status, and the right to participate in decision making both
in industry and government (Macdowell, p.175). Canada s economy has gone through many changes
in the last century. From the crash of the stock market to the end of the second World War, many new
oppourtunities were brought into Canada s labour force. Women began to gain recogniation for their
contribution in the labour force during the war and were also joining men in the labour force. Unions
were also introduced following many upgrades to the health and safety laws in the labour force. In
today s modern world, Canada has become an econmic globalized economy. In the past, trading of
goods and services were done with local communities but with the introduction of economic
globalization, the trading of goods services is now done between neighbouring provinces, nations, and
countries. Many different workplace sectors have been affected by econmic globalization and the one
that will be focused on in this paper will be the retail sector. Canada s retail workplace and the
workers, who work in retail stores, have been transformed due to economic globalization in regards to
economic integration and interdependence between the economies within the state and around the

Labor Division
Preindustrial economies encompasses hunter and gather, agricultural, and agrarian societies. The
labors in this type of society are involved in primary sector production which is the removal of natural
and raw resources from the environment. These resources are used with little or no processing. Most
goods in hunter and gather societies are made by family members in small quantities in order to take
care of their basic needs. Labor division is based on age and gender. As people in these societies
become skilled at raising animals and cultivating their own food, they are able to produce surplus
goods. In the case of agricultural and rural societies, family life is separate from the economy. The
production process is more complex and the resulting buildup of surplus allows some people within
that society to concentrate on other endeavors beyond producing food. Food production is the main
focus in an agrarian society, however, labors have a greater array of dedicated responsibilities, such as
warriors who aid in the protection of the surplus goods. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Elections In The United States
Elections in the United States are tremendously expensive. Between the two candidates of the 2012
presidential election spent almost $2.5 billion(208). It is easy to see how with the cost of
transportation, merchandise, hotels, arenas, and television ads everything accumulates at an extremely
fast pace. Due to this candidates must campaign for funds and support prior to the election.
In the beginning, the methods that campaigns used to raise funds were predominantly unrestricted.
However, that changed in 1971, when the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) began to place
restrictions on certain methods campaigns used to increase their funds(209).
Prior to the FECA, a number of acts were previously put in place in an attempt the limit the
campaigners methods, but they were unsuccessful. The Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 was
amended in 1974 that restricted the amount of money candidates and their families could contribute to

Massachusetts Colonies Compare And Contrast
The colonies of Jamestown, Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay each were different by nature, goals,
successes, and failures. There were numerous similarities as well as differences. However, each
colony was looking for something better that was missing in their main land. Members of each colony
had a vision of what they expected the New World to look like. When they arrived, they were given a
sense of reality. Each colony had challenges that it would have to overcome to thrive as a new
establishment in the New World. The three colonies succeeded at different levels in the New World.
The English migrated to the New World around the early1600s.I feel as though the laws and ideas of
the colonists from this century have formed American into what it is today. The first establishment of
the New World was Jamestown in 1607. This colony was founded by King James I. King James sent
merchants and adventurers that were looking to profit from land and wealth to the New World just as
the Spaniards did in Mexico and Peru. The London Company issued a Virginia charter to form
plantations in Virginia. This was lead by Sir Thomas Smith, one of the wealthiest merchants aboard
the ships to the New World. There were approximately 104 settlers that arrived on a peninsula along
the James River. These settlers wanted to make a profit to take back to England. This peninsula was
known as Jamestown. The colonists in this low lying swamp area was stricken with disease,
contaminated drinking water, and was attacked by Spaniards or Native Americans. This was a serious
threat to the early settlers of Jamestown. Those that came to the New World were mainly men. The
majority of the population was men. They outnumbered the women six to one. Jamestown needed
male labors to attend to the large plantation used for farming. There was no sense of community due
to the lack of women settlers. Jamestown s government focused more on the survival of the colony
rather than religion. Jamestown would not have survived had it not been for the strong leadership
capabilities of Captain John Smith. He brought order out of anarchy (Brands, 2009, p. 35). Captain
John Smith traded with the Indians for food. Smith was later saved from execution by an Indian

The British Soldier As A Drunken Brute
The beginning of the nineteenth century found the British army already engaged for the last seven
years in a war with the French. This war to oppose Napoleon would last until 1815, by which time the
British would be victorious. This triumphant British army, although successful throughout their
campaign with the French, was not openly considered a humble and advantageous force for society. In
fact, the common stereotype and popular image of the British soldier was negative, as the Duke of
Wellington stated the soldiers were the scum of the earth who have all enlisted to drink .1 For the
majority of the soldiers, this label was given inappropriately and carelessly. The Autobiography of
Sergeant William Lawrence, a British soldier who fought in the Peninsula and Waterloo Campaigns
during his fourteen year military career, offers an insight into the lives of the labelled soldiers and
interpretation of whether this label can be deemed accurate.
The idea of the British soldier as a drunken brute is inaccurate. The men who enlisted to fight against
Napoleon were more often than not forced to do so out of economic necessity. Soldiers delinquencies
seemed to many contemporaries to be the unavoidable result of the type of men who enlisted. 2 The
British army was made from voluntary enlistment, and this was thought to have produced a body of
army that was inferior in both character and discipline to the past British armies. For the volunteers,

##s And Hyperboles In Funeral Blues By W. Wh Auden
In the poem Funeral Blues, W. H. Auden, a twenty century British author also known as Wystan Hugh
Auden, describes how people can go through denial during the loss of a person so dear to them. The
person of whom the speaker speaks of was an individual who was a large part of the speaker s life. His
life would seize to exist without that person. The tragic death of a beloved soul shows how emotions
of sorrow and grief dominate over any other feelings the speaker could have. He wants others to feel
his pain during this difficult time. If the speaker is not happy then other people should not be either.
W. H. Auden uses metaphors, imagery and hyperboles in the poem Funeral Blues to describe how he
griefs over the loss of an individual who is very dear to him.
In Funeral Blues, W. H. Auden uses metaphors to describe the importance of death of a beloved
person in his life. The speaker describes how painful death of a loved one can effect everyday life. He
was my North, my South, my East and West, represents how he gives him sense of direction and
guidance throughout his daily life (628). The speaker cannot imagine having to go any direction in life
without him. They travel near and far battling life s daily obstacles together and roaming without him
cannot be so. My Working week and my Sunday rest, / My noon, my midnight, my talk my song;
gives details on how he guides him during the week while working and on Sunday s when they are
playing (628). Days upon days

  • 2. A Positive Role Model I have had many positive role models in my life including parents, coaches, and teachers. Yet, as I grow older I notice myself modeling my behavior more and more after my grandfather. I owe my intense competitive drive to genetics and exposure to an encouraging environment. Part of this environment was witnessing first hand what my grandpa was able to accomplish from a young age. My grandfather, Charles William Taylor, grew up in a single parent household in a small, northern Minnesota farm town. Having personally visited Crookston, the desire to move out of this isolated area would be reason enough to become as successful as possible, and head to Boston. He was the buzz of the town... a star athlete, high jump state champion, and the football and basketball captain at his high school. Bill Taylor would be the first (and only) person from Crookston to attend Harvard College. While at Harvard, Grandpa Bill led the football team to their first ever Ivy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Grandpa appreciated my sense of ambition and was even a bit flattered by the fact that I idolize him. But, he gave me a piece of advice that changed my mindset entirely. He advised me to use this time to be my own person, do what I love, and be who I want to be. That is exactly what my grandpa did, taking initiative to be a three sport athlete at Harvard. He also said to enjoy the fact that I get to surround myself with intelligent new friends from all over the globe. Coming from a small town, Grandpa was exposed to more diversity than he had ever been. He still keeps in contact with his college friends such as David Rockefeller and his football friends after all these years. Lastly, he advised me to develop the skills to be able to compete with my peers in order to better each other. No matter what field I decide to go into teamwork will be a key component in the workplace and in everyday ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Financial Analysis Of CFO This paper reports on an analysis of a survey of 1,050 CFOs in firms across 39 different countries in December, 2008 with the goal of examining the actions taken by firms that were financially constrained in juxtaposition with those that were not financially constrained. They utilize the distinction between constrained and unconstrained to determine how company plans pertaining to employment, marketing, technology spending, and other facets of their business are impacted. Additionally, they examine company financial policies and corporate spending behavior to shed light on instances when investment strategies may have been impacted by financial constraint. Prior research on the topic primarily used data from publicly available financial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to distinguish the various confounding factors that may impact the responses from firms that are financially constrained or unconstrained, Campello, Graham, and Harvey use the methods of Abadie and Imbens (2002) and Dehejia and Wahba (2002) and match their firms according to size, industry, ownership structure, credit score, profitability, whether or not they pay a dividend, and prospects for future growth. In this manner, they analyze financially constrained firms (as the treatment group) with the constructed counterfactual firms that were not financially constrained (the control group). Per the survey, firms could categorize themselves as not affected, somewhat affected, or very affected by credit conditions. The authors found that there was little to no relationship between the size and financial constraint as well as between the ownership structure and financial constraint. Most CFOs expected high growth prospects regardless of their declaration regarding the impact of credit markets. They attempted to find the nature of the constraints by asking about credit availability, higher costs of external funds, and ability to access new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Great Depression And President Roosevelt s New Deal The 1930s, historically remembered for the Great Depression and President Roosevelt s New Deal, demonstrated a time of great racial tension and segregation in America. Slavery dissolved and the Ku Klux Klan became less popular; the struggle of African Americans, however, was not over. Racial segregation thrived with half of African Americans out of work, their jobs transfered to whites who were struggling from the Great Depression ( Race During the Great Depression ). The New Deal, created to promote equality and produce jobs, proved largely ineffective on the front of desegregation, doing little to help the black American community. One place that African Americans were able to prosper: jazz. However, even the jazz community itself remained segregated. Racial prejudice came from both fronts: whites did not want to mix socially with Negroes, and blacks believed that when a Negro enters a White band, he loses his identity as a Negro musician ( DownBeat Dodges the Racial Issue ). Benny Goodman, however, broke this barrier, initially in 1935 with the first interracial jazz performance, and again in his 1938 Carnegie Hall concert featuring black musicians. Benny Goodman s career did not commence with the Trio s 1935 performance; a clarinet player from a young age, Goodman initiated his professional career in 1925 as a member of the Ben Pollack Orchestra. During his time with the orchestra, he recorded his first solo on the song He s the Last Word. In 1931, Benny ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Importance Of Class Struggle In Hamlet Throughout history, class distributions have constantly been a serious issue. Many compositions today display social disparity; however, to recognize it, one needs to look through the proper lens. Literary critical lenses help to understand a work from a different angle which leads to a further interpretation of the composition. There are many lenses and aspects in literature, and one of them is the Marxist Theory. Also known as the Conflict Theory, this idea asserts that class struggle is a powerful divider in society. Although it is a social idea, this concept also relates to literature. In his play Hamlet, William Shakespeare demonstrates class struggles. Looking at this composition through the lens of the Marxist Theory, one uncovers that the dominant ones suppress and exploits the others seeking to display their superiority. Class struggle is noticeable in Hamlet. The royals exploit the lower class to satisfy their ambitions. People from the working class carry out the Aristocrats commands and they hold an insignificant rank in their society. The Aristocrats notably Hamlet, Claudius, and even Gertrude oppress others to obtain what they want and show that they are superior. Claudius poisons his own brother and marries Gertrude to have a stronger chance at being king since she is the imperial jointress, to the throne; he does not marry Gertrude because he loves her; he is using her to obtain the power (I.ii.9). Even when he gets the throne, he still wants more power and seeks to murder Hamlet because the prince knows his secret. Claudius also uses Guildenstern and Rosencrantz to spy on his nephew. The men carry out his orders without protest; they are like an ape, in the corner of/ [Claudius ] jaw; the king is using them to find out the reason for Hamlet s sudden madness and when he will get what he wants; he will get rid them (IV.ii.18 19). Claudius uses Laertes to get rid of Hamlet because he wants his nephew to remain inferior to him because the people of Denmark love Hamlet and they will want him as their ruler; Hamlet is a menace to Claudius and an obstruction between him and the ultimate power. According to timeforchange.org, a carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide. Before starting this project I was unaware of what a carbon footprint was but as I learned more about it I was interested to see what mine would be. The first section to calculate my carbon footprint was how much energy I consume. As a freshman in college living in a dorm I use $600 worth of electricity which is a total of 2.82 tonnes of CO2e. Next was flights. Over the past year I have taken one vacation and it was to Providencials Turks and Caicos. It was a direct flight that took me from JFK airport to an airport in Turks and Caicos. This trip used .41 tonnes of CO2e. The third section was cars. I drive a Mercedes Benz GLK 350 4 matic that I drove everyday to school and dance, both in Ocean City, New Jersey. It is about 10 miles from my house to Ocean City High School and I would go to dance everyday after school which was right around the corner. For the entire school year this added up to be 4,080 miles. In the summer I also worked in Ocean City which ended up being the same amount of miles. These car rides plus a few extra ones I put in 9,000 miles for my miles driven. This total was one of my highest ones with 4.87 tonnes being used. Throughout the concert in Berlin, Armstrong and his chamber orchestra played 13 different pieces. With the exception of Jewel Woods entrance on vocals for two songs, the makeup of the chamber orchestra did not change throughout the concert. As a result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpet remained vital parts of each song throughout the concert. Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, Sleepy Time Down South, before formally introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the tempo was consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the opportunity to each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion. Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco and was named Indiana. In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the performer s immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from beginning to end. The English migrated to the New World around the early1600s.I feel as though the laws and ideas of the colonists from this century have formed American into what it is today. The first establishment of the New World was Jamestown in 1607. This colony was founded by King James I. King James sent merchants and adventurers that were looking to profit from land and wealth to the New World just as the Spaniards did in Mexico and Peru. The London Company issued a Virginia charter to form plantations in Virginia. This was lead by Sir Thomas Smith, one of the wealthiest merchants aboard the ships to the New World. There were approximately 104 settlers that arrived on a peninsula along the James River. These settlers wanted to make a profit to take back to England. This peninsula was known as Jamestown. The colonists in this low lying swamp area was stricken with disease, contaminated drinking water, and was attacked by Spaniards or Native Americans. This was a serious threat to the early settlers of Jamestown. Those that came to the New World were mainly men. The majority of the population was men. They outnumbered the women six to one. Jamestown needed male labors to attend to the large plantation used for farming. There was no sense of community due to the lack of women settlers. Jamestown s government focused more on the survival of the colony rather than religion. Jamestown would not have survived had it not been for the strong leadership capabilities of Captain John Smith. This war to oppose Napoleon would last until 1815, by which time the British would be victorious. This triumphant British army, although successful throughout their campaign with the French, was not openly considered a humble and advantageous force for society. The Autobiography of Sergeant William Lawrence, a British soldier who fought in the Peninsula and Waterloo Campaigns during his fourteen year military career, offers an insight into the lives of the labelled soldiers and interpretation of whether this label can be deemed accurate. The idea of the British soldier as a drunken brute is inaccurate. The men who enlisted to fight against Napoleon were more often than not forced to do so out of economic necessity.
