2. Functions
• Thiamine is also known as Vitamin B1
• Essential for growth
• Essential for maintaining the nerves in normal
condition
• Plays an important role in carbohydrate
metabolism

3. Food Sources
Thiamine is present in many food products and
depending on the amount of vitamin present, The
foods are categorized as rich, good or fair sources.
• Rich sources: Polished Rice, wheat germ, dried
yeast, yeast extract.
• Good sources: Whole cereals, whole wheat,
millets, raw and hand-pounded or parboiled rice,
pulses, soyabean, dried beans, oilseeds and nuts.
• Fair sources: Meat, fish, eggs, milk, vegetables and
fruits.

4. Deficiency
• Being water soluble vitamin, it is lost during
washing, cooking of rice and prolonged
storage of fruits and vegetables
• It is destroyed in toast
• Symptoms – fatigue, irritability, poor appetite,
tingling and numbness in the legs – because
tissue cells are unable to receive sufficient
energy from glucose.

5. 1. Beri Beri – Dry and Wet
• Dry Beri Beri – symptoms polyneuritis,
numbess of extremities, cramps, wasting of
muscles and difficulty in walking
• Wet Beri Beri – symptoms Oedema,
enlargement of Heart, palpitation and
breathlessness
• Infantile Beri Beri – seen in infants 2 – 4
months – breast fed by thiamine deficient
mothers

6. 2. Wernick’s Encephalopathy
• Often seen in alcoholics and characterized by
ophthalmoplegia, polyneuritis, ataxia and
mental deterioration
• affects the peripheral and central nervous
systems
