The Collapse of Democratic Choice
With over 1 million businesses operating in Canada, corporate responsibility is a major issue that
should be recognized by citizens within society. In simple terms, corporate responsibility is the ethics
and morals of a business. Many corporations in Canada have a tremendous amount of wealth and
power. Regulation is essential in order for good government. Corporate responsibility occurs when
initiatives taken by these corporations benefit all the stakeholders. These stakeholders vary from the
employees, to the customer, and to the community. Corporate responsibility is necessary in Canada in
order to secure its democracy, protection of consumers, and sustainability of our society. Therefore, it
is important that Canada has a tight leash on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, what about the majority and common good of the people, like jobs? Murray Dobbin is one
of Canada s most popular progressive political commentators and analysts who explained that,
They influence politicians and political parties with huge amounts of cash; they threaten government
that dare to consider any laws that lessen their power or privilege; they withdraw capital to punish
governments that don t take them seriously; they spend millions on lobbyist to persuade legislators
(Dobbin).
Officials are not required to keep formal records of their contracts with lobbyists, and there is some
scope for lobbyists to avoid registration by claiming that they are merely responding to requests for
information from officials. The government has set up regulations relating to lobbying, but these
regulations are not restricting lobbying, it is making it even more legal. Teeple outlined that,
The process of registering lobbyists began under the Mulroney government in 1989. The Lobbyists
Registration Act essentially puts the onus on lobbyists to register, pay a fee, and list their areas of
interest. By its very principles, the Act legitimizes the role of the lobbying industry (Teeple).
It has to be emphasized that registration is not regulation . Allowing lobbyist to enter parliament
legitimately eats away at Canada s democracy even more. It is a form of corruption, because really it

George Orwell s Use Of Pathos In Politics And The English...
George Orwell uses pathos in Politics and the English Language. He does this to evoke emotion from
the reader. The author s manner of using pathos is well done. Throughout his paper, the author uses
pathos in examples and specific wording. Throughout the paper s entirety, the paper elicits feelings of
inferiority and stupidity. Whether the author intended this or not is unclear. Yet, it is clear that the
manner in which the author speaks uses pathos a lot. At the start of the paper, there are many usages of
pathos. For instance, the author writes about how a man feels like a failure. This phrase is an instance
of pathos. The phrase provides an example of a feeling. Furthermore, the author writes that English
can be an ugly language. Pathos

A Yellow Raft In Blue Water Miscommunication Quotes
Between two brains, there will always be misunderstandings and lies caused by parasitic smells, drafts
and poor quality reception. This quote states that people can misunderstand a situation without an
effective communication, which can lead to false ideas or thoughts. In the novel, A Yellow Raft in
Blue Water by Michael Dorris, many of the characters do not have good communication, while also
keeping secrets from one another. In the novel, the three main characters have different perspective of
one another. Rayona thinks her mom does not care for her, and Christine believes Aunt Ida never
loved her, along with Ida not telling the truth about her past. Michael Dorris utilizes

herself and begins to believe that she is an outcast. Moreover, Christine states, Aunt Ida never gave a
hint she wouldn t let us call her Mom (144.) Aunt Ida s miscommunication and secrets resulted in
Christine constantly comparing herself with her mother to see if she saw a resemblance. Additionally,
Aunt Ida s pregnancy became public knowledge she laughed when people suggested that Willard must

I Hear America Singing The American Dream
Despite many people insisting that the American Dream is unattainable because of issues people will
face in America, others argue that the American Dream is still very achievable these days because of
the opportunities we provide, and new ways of living in the United States.
Only in America can someone start with nothing and achieve the American Dream. That s the
greatness of this country (Rafael Cruz). A controversial topic a lot of people discuss is whether the
American Dream is only just a dream now. Many argue that financially and emotionally it s hard to
live an easy life. Others state that the U.S is the greatest country on earth and can provide endless
opportunities for anyone. The American Dream is still a reasonable goal in America, ... Show more

As times have changed, you don t have to live like everyone else and always try to gain money with
the white picket fence around your perfect garden home. Instead to live a happy, loving life. Courtney
Martin, a wife, mother of two children explains that everyone can have their own American Dream.
She describes to everyone that not everybody has to achieve the same thing. Courtney herself doesn t
own a house, but instead lives in a small community approximately the size of 1.8 acres, her family
and the neighbors all dine together 3 times a day but make sure to make privacy for one another. The
houses are all eco friendly with solar panels so an electricity bill over ten dollars is scarce. Now this

Celie Vs Spielberg
The book and motion picture The Color Purple is a compelling story of a one Celie who finds her
womanhood and humanity with help from the other characters. From her abusive father and husband
to her loving friend Shrug Avery, a strong woman known for her voice, Celie takes a long journey into
personal freedom. Both Walker and Spielberg use
Celie s experiences to convey how her struggles allow her to come into her womanhood, however,
Walker tells the story through a darker and hopeless lens whereas Spielberg presents the pain through
a much less negative perspective.
Both Alice walker and Steven Spielberg portray Celie s struggles in detail, however, Spielberg fails to

Throughout this section of the scene Celie does display happiness through a smile and light laughter.
This sense of happiness does not carry over in the book. The book portrays a more, glass half empty
point of view, where Celie is more jealous of her husband s relationship with Shrug. When Mr. gets
home from meeting Shrug, Celie wants to ask a million questions about her but holds them all in
because Mr. would not want to answer them. She also shows her self consciousness in the book
because of Shrug. Although Celie looks up to
Shrug and idolises her in the book, she also knows that shrug is the woman which her husband wishes
he had married. This is very destroying to Celie s self confidence. Celie knows that the bar is set so
high for her that she will never be able to live up to the standards to which her husband expects. In
both the book and the movie, Celie helps
Shrug back to health. In the book Celie and Shrug come out of Shrugs sickness with a very strong
relationship and Celie uses Shrug as a way to become who she is as a person. In the movie, Celie and

Apollo 17 Research Paper
Apollo 17 was a very interesting lunar mission, and the goal of the mission was to conduct a
geological survey of the moon. The mission also had several other purposes such as conducting
scientific experiments. The reason why it landed in the Taurus littrow highlands is because it was a
place on the moon that had not yet been explored yet. Scientists were hoping to get some interesting
new rock samples. The mission took place on December 7, 1972.
There is a lot of history behind the apollo 17 technology. It all started with sputnik the first satellite to
go up to space. Since then the technology has evolved considerably to the point where it can eject
certain layers of the rocket, and also go all the way to the moon. In terms of cost it cost roughly 220
milion dollars which in 1972 money is a lot more today. Also countless man hours were put into the
space program in general, and apollo 17 is no different. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Importance Of The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier
It is completely silent. All you can hear is the guard walking and occasionally clicking his heels. The
sight you see is breathtaking. It is so powerful with all the elements combined. Minutes ago, you were
all loud and goofing around, but now being at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has changed you
temporarily inside. Somehow the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier seems to do this to almost everyone.
The earnestness of the situation just fixes people s behavior, and they stay completely serious as they
stare in awe at the precision and beauty of both the tomb itself and the tomb guard. The Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier has many interesting factors. History, construction, symbolism, and the tomb guard
all play a special part in the importance of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is in Fort Myer, Virginia and is located in Arlington National
Cemetery. Arlington National Cemetery, where about 400,000 people are buried, is a place where
people who were in the military are buried whether they died in combat, or died of something else, but
were once in the military. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has never officially been named. It
consists of 4 tombs, only three of them have bodies in them. It represents all unknown soldiers who
have died in battle and that they will never be forgotten. There is a tomb for WW1, WW2, the Korean
War, and the Vietnam War. They are/were all filled with unknown soldiers from the corresponding
war, except for the unknown

Pine Island Glacier is the Largest Sheet of Ice on Earch
Pine island Glacier is an enormous stream of ice flowing west northwest along the south of Hudson
mountains into the Amundsen Sea in Antarctica. This ice sheet is the largest chunk of ice on planet
Earth having a volume of a water equivalent to 57m of the global sea level. Hence, this basin has the
largest net contribution of ice to the sea in the world. In the past few decades, the pine island glacier
has been melting at an irreversible rate. Studies show that the ground line of the glacier has retreated
10 kilometres and is in the process of touching a 40 kilometre retreat. The glacier has been losing
approximately 20 billion tons of ice each year for the past quarter of the century and is estimated to
lose four times the ice in the coming quarter.
As said by a glaciologist with France s Grenoble Alps University, Gael Durand, the glacier has started
a phase of self sustained retreat and will continue its decline. The loss of ice from the glacier at this
rate would cause disasters and hence is the latest issue of climatic concern.
It has played a significant role in the rise of the global sea level. It is predicted that at this rate, the
glacier will alone increase the sea level by another centimetre in the next 20 years. The thinning of the
ice in West Antarctica contributes to 10% of the rise in the sea level today. The most recent
acceleration has been monotonic. The warm water flows above the marine ridge which results in
melting of the thick ice which comes out of

Analysis Of A Walk In The Woods
Bill Bryson is the author and the main character of the novel A Walk in The Woods. Bryson came from
Britain over twenty years ago. He brought along his friend Katz to reflect and reacquaint his discovery
on a 2,100 mile of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail stretches from the two states of
Georgia to Maine. They will be discussing their hilarious jokes that were witnessed in this novel. Here
are few examples: Bryson said he wanted to use the bathroom in the woods, Mary Ellen was the
controlling and impatient camper they met, and what Mary Ellen called and did for Bryson and Katz
while on the trail. Bill Bryson and his friend Katz are determined to experience the Appalachian Trail,
which creates amusing stories.
First, Bill himself is hilarious. For example, the reader writes this quote: I wanted a little of that
swagger that comes with being able to gaze at a far horizon through eyes of chipped granite and say
with a slow, manly sniff, Yeah, I ve shit in woods. (Bryson 4) Bill Bryson said that because the
restrooms on the trail were disgusting and completely appalling to go into. He probably meant that
they were all taken by other camper and that he couldn t wait so he decided to use the restroom in the
woods. Or he wanted to go in the restroom in the woods to prove a point to show other campers and
animals that the woods are just nature.
Second, Mary Ellen is one example of amusing by this quote in the novel: When s your birthday? she
said to me.

Analysis Of The Poem Coriolanus
I can relate to Coriolanus struggle to forge a title for himself. I feel as through the name that was given

is the independent choices that I make for myself that will determine what my birth name will come to

go about finding my own identity. As a matter of fact, I empathize with Coriolanus fickleness when it

from Rome, his pride and temper take control of him. Coriolanus responds to being banished by

themes and emotions found in this passage reflect many of Coriolanus character traits. In this scene,
he expresses thorough his actions, his struggle with power, his hubristic tendencies, as well as his
anger issues. However, this passage also exposes his independence, he does not need anyone else to

Additionally, I can strongly relate to Coriolanus feelings of fear because I do not know how to go

How Does Shakespeare Use Deception In King Lear
King Lear Essay Deception is a horrible act, in most circumstances, it breaks trust, ruins relationships
and causes chaos between loved ones. What s even worse than deception is betrayal, which is
sometimes when someone realizes they have been deceived and then feel that they are betrayed. The
tragedy King Lear , by William Shakespeare, describes how deception and betrayal are portrayed in
the play by commenting on family relationships crumbling to pieces, loyalty being disregarded and the
status of women with power being abused for dishonorable purposes. Family is usually closer to each

Christ in Catholicism and Other Religions
The modern society is a highly pluralistic society. Rapid transmission of information in the modern
era and the ability of people to travel around the world on a larger scale has created awareness that the
world and the modern society has a multitude of diverse and contrasting viewpoints on a variety of
issues. This pluralism is evident in the realm of religion than in any other realm. Human awareness of
the existence of the many religions in the world, today, is unprecedented. Christians are aware of the
existence of many other smaller religions apart from the mainstream Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and
Judaism.
Statistics from the World Christian Encyclopaedia indicates that there are more than one billion people
who practice Islam, over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, the truth found in all non Christian religions is attributable to God because he is the source of
every truth. The truth we know about God was universally known from the beginning.
There is a high possibility that the remnants of this revelation of the truth about God have survived in
the memory of different people around the world (Kalmin 133). It is also likely that some elements of
the truth about God were inculcated into some cultures through their ancient contact with the chosen
people of God, Israel, or with ancient Christians. For example, Prophet Mohammed of the Islam
religion had early contact with representatives of Christianity and Judaism (Smith Christopher 34).
Secondly it is important to recognize that where a twisted or false view on the truth occurs, it is a
result of the sinful nature of man repressing the truth he knows about God. According to Romans 1:21,
it is natural for human beings to repress the truth they know about, even if it is quite evident to them.
They substitute this truth with explanations that are futile. Finally, Satan and his demon s role in
influencing fake religious experiences and expressions cannot be underestimated. Psalms 106:36 37
states that people who worship idols sacrifice to the demons. In 1 Timothy 4:1 Apostle Paul argued
that Satan has an uncanny ability to appear disguised as an angel of the light. In 2 Corinthians 11:15,

William Shakespeare Essay
William Shakespeare
Ask anyone who Shakespeare was, and he or she will immediately rattle off at least three different
plays that were required readings in English, not to mention a few blockbuster movies bearing his
name. Many revere the works of Shakespeare as paramount in the world of literature, dedicating entire
books, classes and festivals to the study and celebration of his work. Although the ancient language is
a common stumbling block for even the most seasoned readers, his varied tales of love, hate, fear,
betrayal, laughter, defeat and victory are just as fitting today as they were four hundred years ago. He
is amazingly timeless. Yet, while we might know what Shakespeare is, will we ever really know who

Sadly, Hamnet died in August of 1596, and from that point forward we have no more information
regarding his family until 1616, the year of his death. There are enough legal documents and theatre
records, though, to know that Shakespeare goes on to possess a generous amount of real estate, hold
shares in an acting company that built the Globe Theatre, and become a principal player in the acting
group The Kings Men (A Midsummer Night s Dream xxx xxxi). There are many theories and stories
floating around that seem to fill in the gaping holes in his timeline, but since this information doesn t

Themes Of The Lais Of Marie De France
The Lais of Marie de France is a collection of poems that tell enchanting stories of handsome knights,
kings, queens, and romance. Although the lais varied in content; the subject of romantic love is the
common theme. Since romantic love is the central theme of the lais it is important to define the term.
According to the article, The Social Psychology of Love and Attraction romantic love is defined as, a
love that is supposed to stand the test of time, enduring all hardship. Romantic love emphasizes being
in love with a certain individual (Braxton Davis 1). In the lais Bisclavret, Equitan, Laustic there is a
conflict between love and moral responsibility. Many of the characters experience love and tragedy;
yet, Marie de France provides a witty insight into loves immoral issues. In the lais loneliness, greed,
excitement, and lust are the motivations for many of the characters reckless actions. Marie de France
demonstrates how these characteristics combined with romantic infatuation, passion, and a yearning
desire; influences corrupt behavior. This behavior then manifested into character traits such as
betrayal, adultery, and cruelty that are revealed throughout the lais.
In the lai Bisclavret, a lord s wife stuffers a family curse and is exiled, as a result of her betrayal. In
the lai Bisclavret, a lord from Brittany disappears for three days without an explanation to his wife.

Figurative Language In The Treasure Of Lemon Brown
Ellen Hunnicutt once said . . . figurative language adds pizzazz. It raise work above the plain, the dull,
the ordinary. This quote explains how using figurative language helps create a more interesting and
useful way of expressing a tone of a character or event.Figurative language is a uses of words,
phrases, and sentences to help to make the characters and story line come more to live in the reader s
mind. Some examples of Figurative languages are similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification,
onomatopoeia, and many more. Figurative language help the reader see tone and mood in each of the
example of figurative language because the reader can see or image the event or character in their
mind. In a story, poem, or any form of writing, figurative language is extremely important to a reader
because if a sentence didn t have figurative language the reader may not find the story or poem
interesting or even find it confusing and difficult to understand. In addition the use of figurative
language is crucial when an author is writing. In the stories The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter
Dean Myers and The Pigman, By Paul Zindel, the authors used Figurative language to develop the
tone of their stories so that that the reader can visualize it in their mind.
In the stories The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter Dean Myers, the author uses figurative
language to help the reader understand the tone of the story. The figurative language used in this
sentence is personification to show how the setting. In this event A boy named Grey Ridley was
walking down a street and saw the leafs blowing, Gusts of wind made bits of paper dance between the
papers cars . In other words this shows us that this street may be dirty, this may not be a good
environment, and how bits of paper dancing around is a result of wind so it must be a cold fall
weather. In addition later in the story Walter uses personification again to descriptive the mood. Grey
and Lemon Brown are in a abandoned house and both of them hear a car pass by, A car passed, its tires
hissing over the wet street and it s red tails lights glowing in the darkness. The intention of the author
was to help create the intense, creepy, and spooky mood for the reader. In

The Case Against Legalized Gambling Essay
The gambling industry is a big money maker in America. Gambling institutions exist in many states.
These institutions consist of riverboat casinos, Indian reservation casinos, and regular gaming casinos
that all accumulate millions of dollars to the state through taxes. This tax money is then used
throughout the state for many programs that may include education, health, and road maintenance.
The American Gaming Association (AGA) even claims that gambling institutions lower the taxes in
many areas because of the large tax money they give the government (CQ 784). But does the
gambling industry only help and build the economy and attract money from the public? Perhaps the
gambling industry increases more than just government funds. Is it ... Show more content on

The issues of crime and compulsive gambling go hand in hand. It is not just an issue that could exist,
but indeed it does exist. In Maryland alone in 1990, there were at least 50,000 compulsive gamblers
(CQ 782). Doctor Valerie C. Lorenz, Executive Director of the Compulsive Gambling Center, has
done several studies on compulsive gambling, and has given several statistics which show how
compulsive gambling is closely related to crime. Her studies show that 99 percent of compulsive
gamblers commit crimes, 25 percent end up in the legal system for bad checks, forgery, fraud,
embezzlement from job, theft, bank robbery, selling drugs, street crime, and prostitution etc..., and 100
percent of compulsive gamblers become physically abusive, especially towards children (Kindt).
These facts clearly show that compulsive gamblers suffer legal and financial problems which drive
them to commit crimes. The American Gaming Industry disagrees with the idea that there are a
significant number of compulsive gamblers. They believe that the vast majority of Americans are
social gamblers who can participate in gambling activities without harmful effects (CQ 784). This
statement may be true. Doctor Lorenz did indeed state that only 1 1/2 to 3 percent of the population in
a state with two or more forms of legalized gambling will become compulsive gamblers, but as was
already stated above there are 50,000 compulsive gamblers in Maryland (http). That high number of

The Big Bang Theory Of Sarcasm
1. Chin s main point about sarcasm is that it is very useful and that it is an necesary tool to
understanding each other, especially in our culture. Chin says, Sarcasm detection is an essential skill if
one is going to function in a modern society dripping with irony. The people that can t detect sarcasm
are socially inept, so to speak, because they will take what is said at face value, instead of
understanding the nuances of what isn t being said. 2. Sarcasm is a neurological ability, not just a style
of talking that some people use. It takes more brain power to percieve irony than regular conversation
does. Like mental bodybuilding, it forces the brain to extend itself to understand what the truth is
behind the sarcasm. The article states that, Sarcasm seems to exercise the brain more than sincere
statements do. Scientists who have monitored the electrical activity of the brains of test ... Show more

Someone who can not understand sarcasm can stand out from others in social situations, like the
character Sheldon Cooper on the tv show The Big Bang Theory. Although his character is a genius, he
has to work harder to understand some of the most basic interactions between the other characters.
The ability to detect sarcasm is a natural occurence in most people from ages as young as four years
old. People that are unable to detect sarcasm may be autistic, have had brain injuries or lesions, or be
schizophrenic. Dementia can cause a person to lose the ability to detect sarcasm and may be one of the
early signs of the disease. 4. In Greek, sarcasm means to tear flesh like dogs. Another way to say this
would be that the mean, cutting remarks of sarcasm can hurt someone. An example would be when
someone is being sarcastic, but the intention of the remark is to hurt or demean the person it is being
said to. People that are trying to percieve themselves to be more popular than they are might be more
prone to this, as a defense mechanism against what others might think about

After having a stand in Saks she headed after Neimans. Lauder wanted to sell her products at high end
stores because she wanted to have a high end brand that was low cost. After some persistence she
scored Neimans.
Lauder was booming but she was still not at her goal. She wanted to be a cosmetic titan like Revlon

most famous product; Youth Dew. This was a bath oil that doubled as a perfume. This made her sales

Lauder had one more store left to conquer; The Galeries Lafayette. This was the European Neimans.
After months of persistence she still couldn t win them over. Finally she got them after being sneaky.

Group development and leadership skills play a pivotal role in almost every field of life. Effective

It is more towards the environment in which teacher only teaches stuff and students have to memorize
it in order to get good scores. In my opinion teacher and students should have a relationship which is
more collaborative in nature. Furthermore, teaching students on small groups will be more beneficial
for the students because it will be more rewarding for the students in terms of learning.
Groups will increase the interaction between students and teachers. Formation of groups will also help
the students in developing problem solving skills, decision making skills and it will also enhance the
communication skills. Groups are of a great use for teachers, because teaching to groups is easier, it
keep the students motivated and increase their attendance too. Alongside, it will also increase the
participation at the end of students. Hence, learning environment can be seen. Studying and teaching
in groups will also act as simulation of the professional careers, because it will provide the students
with the environment in which they have to accomplish certain task in groups (anonymous, n.d.).

Gerald Graff Hidden Intellectualism Summary
Goodman 6
Richard Goodman
English Comp II
Mrs. Cravens
21 February 2018
Audience in Mind What makes a good writer? Many people have differing opinions on what makes a
person a good writer, or the standard in which one can write. One of the main things to remember
about writing is to always keep your audience in mind, and adjust you writing style and language
accordingly. Also remember that writing is process which takes time to perfect. English has never
been one of my favorite subjects, mainly just because I never really consider myself to be a good
writer and by the normal standard I may not be. In a sense though, I found contrary to my belief that
my writing wasn t all that bad. Now it took time for me to see that for myself, because ... Show more

There some people that are incredibly street smart but do not fair so well in school but in Gerald Graff
s Hidden Intellectualism Graff argues that street smarts are just as important as book smarts. Graff
says that It is a matter of finding points of convergence and translation, moments when student
discourse can be translated into academic discourse and vice versa, producing a kind of bilingualism
on both sides of the student teacher divide (Graff, Hidden Intellectualism). In other words, for a
student with street smarts to learn to read academically, students need to read things that interest them,
encouraging them to dive into their reading, forming an opinion and arguing their point. When you
think about it this does makes sense, you can t get that student to read more intellectual readings
without first starting with something that interest them and then let them naturally move toward more
intellectual reading. I myself was this way in high school, I was always uninterested in the required
readings. Many times, failed to even read them and when I did it was just to get a grade. I never really
formed my own opinion of the reading, except for the fact that I just didn t like it. However, when we
could pick our own reading material, something that interested me, I was more drawn in and able to
form my own opinion, caring about what I was reading. By doing so this allows students with street
smarts, to not only become drawn toward the more intellectual reading, it will get to a point where
they want to argue their points and form their own opinions. The question though is being street smart
better than book smart, and in my opinion, this can be situational, depending on what you are doing
would determine which one is better but when coupled they work well together. In writing which
would you rather have, someone who can express their opinion, and

Don Delillo White Noise Analysis
Death is a vapor that seeps through the fissures of life, plunging its way into a person s existence.
Throughout White Noise, Don Delillo uses death to invoke a harrowing fear Jake Gladney and others
alike strive to elude. From power to drugs, the terror drives characters to shroud their life with
distractions and shields. Jack s influence and power as the chairman of Hitler Studies gives him a
sense that a person can be larger than death. Babette s defense is drugs, attempting to eradicate the fear
consuming her. However, these attempts to liberate themselves from fear was ineffective.
In a suburban town, Jack is the chairman in the department of Hitler studies and death is a perpetual
thought of his (DeLillo). For example, Jack wakes up at 3:51am in a death sweat , thinking about
death (DeLillo, 47). Furthermore, while looking through family albums, Jack wonders who will die
first (DeLillo, 30). The fear of death wakes Jack up at night, clouding happiness in a dark mist. As the
chairman of Hitler studies, Jack uses Hitler s image and reputation to create a veil over him in order to
feel in control. Jack states that he feels comfortable with and on top of death after explaining a part of
Hitler s life to a crowd (DeLillo, 74). Moreover, Jack agrees with his friend Murray that Hitler is
larger than death (DeLillo, 274). This suggests that because Hitler brought forth great death and is still
known in modern day, that Jack believes his knowledge of Hitler protects

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Patents
1. The market reward rationale for the patent system is based on the ability of patents to reduce
transaction costs and serve as a transferable asset, thereby allowing for inventor to control the supply
of the technology, and for the technology to maintain competitive pricing in the marketplace and
recover costs of invention. Specifically, a patent allows for disclosure which prevents inventors from
overlapping efforts or from keeping the technology a secret, thereby reducing transaction costs and
making it easier to work with interested parties. The transferability of the patented technology further
eases collaboration and commercialization efforts, allowing inventors work with appropriate
companies who are well able to commercialize the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a company creates a new drug to treat a certain disease, for example, they can get a patent for it and
can charge supra competitive prices as they are the only market player, since the patent restricts other
competitors from manufacturing the same medication.
3. The Ex post rationale focuses on the economic functions of patents after they are granted, claiming
that the patent system incentivizes the technology to be constructively utilized, enhanced, and
commercialized post patent. In particular, this rationale holds that patents improve economic
efficiency (i.e. by reducing transaction costs, allowing for transferability divisibility, promoting
collaboration), allowing for a more efficient marketplace, and promoting investments in the patented
technology due to the chance of large rewards in the marketplace in return. For example, the
University of Illinois develops a significant amount of patented technology, including the Dry Grind
Corn Milling Process. The patent on this technology signifies to investors and other interested parties
in the important functions of the technology in terms of processing corn into more corn products, and
the fact that it was developed at a credited institution, initiating outside firms to invest in, enhance,
and commercialize the product, improving the technologies competitive edge in the marketplace. The
University of Illinois similarly has an incentive to ensure that the technology is productively

The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has approved five other types of artificial sweeteners in
the United States. These sweeteners are acesulfame potassium, sold as Sunett and Sweet One;
aspartame, sold as Equal, Nutrasweet and Sugar Twin; neotame, sold as Newtame; saccharin, sold as
Sweet N Low, Sweet Twin and Necta Sweet; and sucralose, sold as Splenda (LaMotte 2016). These

However, the FDA also says that these sweeteners are safe when used in moderation, meaning that
their consumption is confirmed to be unhealthy when in excess. The variety and uncertainty of these
artificial sweeteners makes determining their effects substantially more difficult, especially
considering that they are frequently used in combination with each other to make unique flavors and
bring them closer to the taste of actual sugar. However, the FDA and many other researchers have
decided that a largely excessive consumption of artificial sweeteners can be linked to the development

Ruth Is A Biblical Story
Ruth is a Biblical story loved by many. A story of God s unexpected plan panning out in a style that
only He could come up with inspires many to trust His direction. The movie, titled The Story of Ruth,
conveys this message though the movie does not always adhere to perfect Biblical accuracy. The
addition of certain events and characters enhances the movie s appeal, yet distracts from the factual
account presented in the Bible. The movie begins with Ruth being sold for service to Chemosh in
order for her family to be fed. After being sold, she is required to worship and serve Chemosh. The
Moabites, to appease Chemosh, have an annual sacrifice of one of the children. Ruth is chosen by the
priest to be sacrificed and suddenly a blemish appears on the crook of her elbow causing the priest to
select a different sacrifice. The blemish suddenly vanishes after the priest selects another girl to be
sacrificed. The blemish s quick appearance and disappearance demonstrate that Ruth is destined to be
used by God for something greater and that He will not have her die for a false god. Upon meeting
Mahlon, she is slowly converting to Judaism through Mahlon s teaching of creation, prayer, and love.
She begins to question the ways of Chemosh and the annual sacrifice, leading to her eventually leave
the kingdom to follow God. Elimelech and Chilion die at the hands of the Moabite army while Ruth
and Mahlon are held captive. After the escape, Mahlon lives just long enough to marry Ruth. Ruth

I was planning the flight to Murfreesboro, KMBT. It was an easy enough flight to plan considering I

Hinch Mountain VOR is along the way. Even though it has been out of service a lot, I felt it couldn t
hurt to include it. I did all the requisite calculations since the examiner had given me mock weather. I
also planned on waiting until the night before to check the real weather and do real calculations.
In the mean time, I did the paperwork and hammered at the little oral exam prep book I had purchased.
By Wednesday, I had filled out the IACRA paper work about four times; it is a good idea in theory, but
leaves a little to be desired in practice. After ironing out all the details, I was ready to go.
Unfortunately, I hadn t considered that the flight school would close on New Years Day which led to a
bit of a shock when I got the email about the closure. I immediately called to make sure I was still
good to go. As it turns out, the examiner has a key so it wasn t a problem (though it almost became

I studied like crazy for the days running up to the check ride. I read everything I could find about
check rides on the internet. I studied every little scrap of paper from my training. I carried all that stuff

Four Factors That Affect The Overall Cost Of Cremation
There is a common held belief that cremation services are more affordable than funerals. Cremation is
often referred to as the low cost burial option. However, before you choose this option for yourself,
make sure you are aware of all the factors that can affect the cost of your cremation. Here are the top
four factors that affect the overall cost of cremation.
Factor #1: Transportation
After you pass away, your remains are going to need to be transported to the funeral home that will
take care of your cremation. Your remains will have to be transported from where ever you are to the
funeral home that you choose. If you are trying to plan your funeral and burial out in advance, you are
going to need to look into the cost of transportation for bodies.
These costs can vary, but generally the biggest factor that affects the price of transportation is how far
your body needs to travel. If you plan on having a local ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many different rules and choices that will affect the cost of storing your body.
To start with, most states require that bodies be storied a certain number of days before they are
cremated. These types of rules are in place to ensure that if there is an suspicion around your death, an
autopsy can be performed and the cause of your death can be found.
Next, if you have any medical devices inside of your body, such as a pacemaker, these medical
devices will need to be removed from your body before it can be cremated.
Finally, personal factors can affect your storage costs. If you want to haVe your body available for
viewing at your funeral, your body will need to be stored until your funeral and a casket will need to
be purchased or rented for the viewing. Even if you don t want a viewing at your funeral, you may
have family members who live far away who want to see your body one last time before it is

learn from Richard connell s story The Most Dangerous Game is you don t know how someone feels
unless you are in a similar situation.
Rainsford tells Whitney that jaguars don t have feelings or fears or any emotions when they are being

Auto mechanics often had a negative perception of all their customers from different social classes,
believing they were all ignorant due to their lack of technological knowledge, and thus could be

vehicle owners often perceived the mechanics to be of low social class and thus intelligence. For
example, Hudson Motor Company had car manuals telling their wealthy customers to be patient with
car mechanics when they were repairing the car, since many are from lower socioeconomic
backgrounds and thus were not as smart as the wealthy car owner (Borg, The Chauffeur Problem 824).
The car owner s perceptions largely drew from the nature of an auto mechanics work, as Auto

Analysis Of Shane Koyczan And Many Artists
To this day is a spoken word poem and video illustration by Shane Koyczan and many artists. It was
created in 2013 with the purpose of effectively spreading the convincing message that bullying is a
real and serious thing that is too often dismissed as normal and not acted upon as the serious thing it
is. 2013 was shortly after the new large push against bullying which is likely one large reason as to the
creation and popularity of this work. However even with the anti bullying movement it would not
have become popular if it was not in itself an effective piece at conveying its own point against
bullying and contributing to the cause. Koyczan made his piece so successful by successfully using
ethos and pathos to make hard hitting grounded points to his purpose. He also used small amounts of
logos but it was not a majorly effective part of his piece. Ethos is the way the writer creates a persona
that allows the audience to see them as trustworthy, relatable, knowledgeable, and as someone with
authority. Then uses these to convince an audience of their point. This is use of ethos effectively done
in the creation of koyczan s poem to this day . He shows his reliability and knowledge to the viewer
by showing them that he has personal experience with the main topic. He tells the story of his pain
when he was bullied and how simple name calling left lasting effects on him personally. This not only
lets the viewer see that he has a reliable viewpoint, it shows that he has

Henry Roe Vs Henry Wade
In 1971, a case was filed by Norma Mccorvey, known more commonly as Jane

1951 to 1987. Jane filed a case against him because he enforced a law prohibiting abortion unless it
risks the life of the mother (CNN, 2017). Texas had enacted a criminal abortion statute in 1854

remained the same. It stated that abortions were not permitted unless medical advice was provided to
abort in order to save the life of the mother. It had been challenged several times, but Roe Vs. Wade
was the case that changed the preexisting ban on abortion (Justia,2016).
Jane roe was a single pregnant women that resided in Dallas county. She sought a declaratory

Roe claimed that she was unwed and pregnant and wanted to terminate her pregnancy in a safe way
done by trained professionals. She stated that Texan law on abortion was unconstitutional because it
went against her right of personal privacy laid out by the first, fourth, fifth, ninth, and fourteenth
amendments. She also stated that she was suing not only on behalf of herself but all texan women

Leonid Fridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds
In his essay America Needs Its Nerds , author Leonid Fridman discusses the stigma against so called
nerds and how these nerds are essential to America in keeping up with other countries. He does this
providing several examples. However, this essay is ultimately weak because of the broadness of his
examples, as well as the overarching strawman he creates to represent society . By relying solely on
these examples, he creates a very simple one sided argument To begin the essay, Fridman states that
our society is one which has only derogatory terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious
and academically serious (lines 2 4). As a broad statement, this holds true. However, in the context of
having a living person with a brain being the audience, this crumbles. Nerd and geek defined by

If I recall correctly, this profession was one originating before or during the Renaissance. He claims
this is telling a fact about our language and culture , despite most people probably not knowing (or
caring) what the word means beforehand (One might say that not knowing or caring what nerd means
is a sign of being a non intelligent non nerd, but does knowing that definition really make you smarter
than/superior to anyone else?). Fridman then states that at Harvard University, an Ivy league
university known for its prestigiousness, that anti intellectualism is rampant . He provides an example
saying that most students are ashamed of how much they study, but his lack of concrete evidence for
this example makes it seem extremely unlikely. Some may say that the unlikeliness of it adds to the
essay, in the nuh uh no way! sort of way, but truthfully, it doesn t. It detracts from it by lessening his

Body Imagery In Art Analysis
Hollander discusses a new tradition of painting half length portraits and first leads the reader through
the gradual move to more erotic and sensual images portrayed in artworks. She presents works by
Titian and Tintoretto and explains that artists of the period portrayed real people in exotic poses,
sometimes with bare chested men or semi exposed women s breasts, and titled their works as mythical
characters. Throughout the chapter, the author leads the reader through a variety of images that show
the gradual progression of exposed skin in artworks, from draped modern garments assuming folds of
classical draperies, which revealed parts of the body, to works such as Caravaggio s Boy Bitten by a
Lizard (1571 1610) where the attention on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She describes how an abundance of drapery surrounding the sitter expressed wealth, or as seen in
Francisco de Zurbarian s Saint Serapion (1598 1664), monochromatic heavy woolen garments add a
sense of emotional burden to what is already seen in the facial and body imagery. Hollander also
describes how artist Johann Liss uses bright, hectic, swirling drapery to add drama and a sexual
distraction to the murder scene depicted in his painting Judith in the Tent of Holofernes (1595 1631).
In all the examples Hollander presents, she illustrates how fabric and draperies were used by artists of
the late sixteenth early seventeenth century to evoke a particular emotion relative to the subject matter
and not just for depicting utilitarian clothing to cover the body.
Ending the chapter is a discussion of the Hollywood photographers use of the ½ portrait which often
depicts exposed skin and draped garments to convey sensuality and the sitters consciousness of one s
beauty. According to Hollander, this shows that the Baroque spirit in portraiture has held on into the

Why I Learned The Piano
As a thirteen year old I could only watch game shows for so long, and that day I could not take
anymore. I couldn t sit still and needed to hear more than Steve Harvey and the Family Feud theme
song, so I wandered into her sitting room that always felt a little warmer than the rest of the house.
Sometimes I would sit on the couch by the window and feel the sun s heat hit my face and watch the
cars drive by. Sometimes I played with her giant record player, but vases covered it that day, so I went
to her old piano. Dust covered sheet music and instruction books filled the bench of the piano. I
flipped through them and found songs I knew, and I became determined. That day I decided I wanted
to learn the piano. Every day at the same time I would go in her sitting room and practice, and every
day she would listen and tell me how good a job I was doing. Some days she would even come play
with me. Every day of that summer looked exactly the same: sleep in the morning on the couch, have
lunch with my mom, and play piano in the afternoon. It did change on some days when my
grandmother would take me to the Baskin Robins down the street, and we d get ice cream, but I d
always practice when we got back. I convinced myself I would become a great pianist, but my left
hand never did anything. It never moved the same way my right hand did, but my grandmother never
said anything about it, she always encouraged me, no matter how bad my playing actually sounded.
I lost my drive for piano

Managing The Change Management Strategy
Organizational change management is the outline for managing the change management strategy. It
also helps with the corporate processes for structural and cultural changes of Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Change management helps our organization realize why the change was essential so that we can
accept all changes and goals to move forward. Change in our organization is good for all of the
employees since it will help them gain new skills and competencies and this in fact is an
organizational goal of the company. The first step for our change management strategy is creating
urgency. For this change to occur, the whole establishment needs to be on board and really wants it.
Developing a sense of urgency around the need for change can trigger the initial motivation to get
things moving. Without motivation, individuals will not help and the efforts for the change will not go
anywhere (Kotter, 1995, p. 60). Managing change across the board if it is not done correctly can be
damaging. The second step is to convince our employees that change is necessary. This frequently
takes strong management and noticeable support from important people within our organization.
Dealing with change is not enough one will have to lead everyone in this process. Once shaped our
change partnership or coalition needs to work together as team and continue to build urgency round
the need for change. Our goal is to be successful. It requires that our organization gets all of the
knowledge it can so

Revolutionary War Revolutionary Essay
By defining a revolution as a radical change of conditions , the Revolutionary War was unquestionably
a revolution. In determining whether the Revolutionary War was revolutionary or not, one must assess
the extent to which society transformed before, throughout, and after the war. Although some colonists
sought to preserve the rights they enjoyed from tradition and custom, the Revolutionary War can be
described as revolutionary because men put their life as well as their honor on the line to fight in a war
when triumph seemed an unreachable goal. This was done to make radical changes such as
formulating an entirely new system of government instead of creating a monarchy, as they had known.
In the First Continental Congress, which occurred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When people are over three thousand miles away from each other, representation can be difficult.
When America first separated itself from Britain, the founding fathers attempted to create the least
amount of similarities as possible. The need to be different from Britain was shown primarily through
the creation of the Articles of Confederation as they represented a strong reaction against the strong
central government of Britain. The Continental Congress adopted the Articles on November 15, 1777
and they served as the United States first Constitution. There were many problems that came with the
Articles. The government they created was so weak that tasks could not be completed efficiently.
Because of the weak government, America could not grow economically which led to political
uncertainty. The government had no power to enforce any legislation it passed and congress was
denied the power to tax. Money was one of the greatest issues with the Articles of Confederation.
Since the government was denied the right to tax, they could only request money from the states and
these requests were often denied. The legislature never had enough money to run the government or to
fulfill financial obligations to bondholders, soldiers, and

Authority and American Usage
Authority and American Usage: Part 1 Authority and American Usage written by David Foster
Wallace, poses an argument about the English language, and the different beliefs of its usage. This
essay was written in defense of Bryan A. Garner s, A Dictionary of Modern American Usage. His
argument in Authority and American Usage is the difference the between prescriptivism perception
and the descriptivism perception (Linguistic terms that could easily be made into smaller, more
understandable words for people like me). Since the beginning of time, language has evolved. From
biblical times, to Shakespearean times, to present day; the English language has been continuously
changing since it s birth and has no intentions on stopping. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This makes Wallace an evil genius; revealing that he is in fact, the slyest snoot of all. Another aspect
that Wallace goes in depth with is our current writing system. He describes how currently, our
education system is leaning more toward a descriptive type of writing style, rather than the traditional
and formal prescriptive writing style. Language changes so often that even the way teachers are
expecting their student to write are different from that of 20 years ago. Ross 4 Authority and American
Usage, an interesting essay written by the brilliant and quick witted David Foster Wallace, presents an
argument on different ways of understanding the ever changing American usage in the English
language. Keeping up with the English language in America is like chasing your new, untrained puppy
down the street. Tiring and basically impossible to get a hold of. Over the past centuries, the English
language has evolved so much, that if you took a person from the 13th century and threw them in the
middle of New York City in 2013, it would be as if two different languages were being spoken.
Wallace s essay is a pretty intriguing, considering half of us really don t wonder Hmm, what s the
proper way to say ___? or Shouldn t she

In simple terms, corporate responsibility is the ethics and morals of a business. Many corporations in Canada have a tremendous amount of wealth and power. Officials are not required to keep formal records of their contracts with lobbyists, and there is some scope for lobbyists to avoid registration by claiming that they are merely responding to requests for information from officials. The government has set up regulations relating to lobbying, but these regulations are not restricting lobbying, it is making it even more legal. Teeple outlined that, The process of registering lobbyists began under the Mulroney government in 1989. The Lobbyists Registration Act essentially puts the onus on lobbyists to register, pay a fee, and list their areas of interest. By its very principles, the Act legitimizes the role of the lobbying industry (Teeple). It has to be emphasized that registration is not regulation . • 12. Pine Island Glacier is the Largest Sheet of Ice on Earch Pine island Glacier is an enormous stream of ice flowing west northwest along the south of Hudson mountains into the Amundsen Sea in Antarctica. This ice sheet is the largest chunk of ice on planet Earth having a volume of a water equivalent to 57m of the global sea level. Hence, this basin has the largest net contribution of ice to the sea in the world. In the past few decades, the pine island glacier has been melting at an irreversible rate. Studies show that the ground line of the glacier has retreated 10 kilometres and is in the process of touching a 40 kilometre retreat. The glacier has been losing approximately 20 billion tons of ice each year for the past quarter of the century and is estimated to lose four times the ice in the coming quarter. As said by a glaciologist with France s Grenoble Alps University, Gael Durand, the glacier has started a phase of self sustained retreat and will continue its decline. The loss of ice from the glacier at this rate would cause disasters and hence is the latest issue of climatic concern. It has played a significant role in the rise of the global sea level. It is predicted that at this rate, the glacier will alone increase the sea level by another centimetre in the next 20 years. The thinning of the ice in West Antarctica contributes to 10% of the rise in the sea level today. The most recent acceleration has been monotonic. • 13. Analysis Of A Walk In The Woods Bill Bryson is the author and the main character of the novel A Walk in The Woods. Bryson came from Britain over twenty years ago. He brought along his friend Katz to reflect and reacquaint his discovery on a 2,100 mile of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail stretches from the two states of Georgia to Maine. They will be discussing their hilarious jokes that were witnessed in this novel. Here are few examples: Bryson said he wanted to use the bathroom in the woods, Mary Ellen was the controlling and impatient camper they met, and what Mary Ellen called and did for Bryson and Katz while on the trail. Bill Bryson and his friend Katz are determined to experience the Appalachian Trail, which creates amusing stories. First, Bill himself is hilarious. For example, the reader writes this quote: I wanted a little of that swagger that comes with being able to gaze at a far horizon through eyes of chipped granite and say with a slow, manly sniff, Yeah, I ve shit in woods. (Bryson 4) Bill Bryson said that because the restrooms on the trail were disgusting and completely appalling to go into. He probably meant that they were all taken by other camper and that he couldn t wait so he decided to use the restroom in the woods. Or he wanted to go in the restroom in the woods to prove a point to show other campers and animals that the woods are just nature. Rapid transmission of information in the modern era and the ability of people to travel around the world on a larger scale has created awareness that the world and the modern society has a multitude of diverse and contrasting viewpoints on a variety of issues. This pluralism is evident in the realm of religion than in any other realm. Human awareness of the existence of the many religions in the world, today, is unprecedented. First, the truth found in all non Christian religions is attributable to God because he is the source of every truth. The truth we know about God was universally known from the beginning. There is a high possibility that the remnants of this revelation of the truth about God have survived in the memory of different people around the world (Kalmin 133). It is also likely that some elements of the truth about God were inculcated into some cultures through their ancient contact with the chosen people of God, Israel, or with ancient Christians. For example, Prophet Mohammed of the Islam religion had early contact with representatives of Christianity and Judaism (Smith Christopher 34). Secondly it is important to recognize that where a twisted or false view on the truth occurs, it is a result of the sinful nature of man repressing the truth he knows about God. According to Romans 1:21, it is natural for human beings to repress the truth they know about, even if it is quite evident to them. They substitute this truth with explanations that are futile. Finally, Satan and his demon s role in influencing fake religious experiences and expressions cannot be underestimated. Psalms 106:36 37 states that people who worship idols sacrifice to the demons. The American Gaming Association (AGA) even claims that gambling institutions lower the taxes in many areas because of the large tax money they give the government (CQ 784). In Maryland alone in 1990, there were at least 50,000 compulsive gamblers (CQ 782). Doctor Valerie C. Lorenz, Executive Director of the Compulsive Gambling Center, has done several studies on compulsive gambling, and has given several statistics which show how compulsive gambling is closely related to crime. Her studies show that 99 percent of compulsive gamblers commit crimes, 25 percent end up in the legal system for bad checks, forgery, fraud, embezzlement from job, theft, bank robbery, selling drugs, street crime, and prostitution etc..., and 100 percent of compulsive gamblers become physically abusive, especially towards children (Kindt). These facts clearly show that compulsive gamblers suffer legal and financial problems which drive them to commit crimes. The American Gaming Industry disagrees with the idea that there are a significant number of compulsive gamblers. They believe that the vast majority of Americans are social gamblers who can participate in gambling activities without harmful effects (CQ 784). This statement may be true. Doctor Lorenz did indeed state that only 1 1/2 to 3 percent of the population in a state with two or more forms of legalized gambling will become compulsive gamblers, but as was already stated above there are 50,000 compulsive gamblers in Maryland (http). There some people that are incredibly street smart but do not fair so well in school but in Gerald Graff s Hidden Intellectualism Graff argues that street smarts are just as important as book smarts. Graff says that It is a matter of finding points of convergence and translation, moments when student discourse can be translated into academic discourse and vice versa, producing a kind of bilingualism on both sides of the student teacher divide (Graff, Hidden Intellectualism). In other words, for a student with street smarts to learn to read academically, students need to read things that interest them, encouraging them to dive into their reading, forming an opinion and arguing their point. When you think about it this does makes sense, you can t get that student to read more intellectual readings without first starting with something that interest them and then let them naturally move toward more intellectual reading. I myself was this way in high school, I was always uninterested in the required readings. Many times, failed to even read them and when I did it was just to get a grade. I never really formed my own opinion of the reading, except for the fact that I just didn t like it. However, when we could pick our own reading material, something that interested me, I was more drawn in and able to form my own opinion, caring about what I was reading. By doing so this allows students with street smarts, to not only become drawn toward the more intellectual reading, it will get to a point where they want to argue their points and form their own opinions. The movie, titled The Story of Ruth, conveys this message though the movie does not always adhere to perfect Biblical accuracy. The addition of certain events and characters enhances the movie s appeal, yet distracts from the factual account presented in the Bible. The movie begins with Ruth being sold for service to Chemosh in order for her family to be fed. After being sold, she is required to worship and serve Chemosh. The Moabites, to appease Chemosh, have an annual sacrifice of one of the children. Ruth is chosen by the priest to be sacrificed and suddenly a blemish appears on the crook of her elbow causing the priest to select a different sacrifice. It was created in 2013 with the purpose of effectively spreading the convincing message that bullying is a real and serious thing that is too often dismissed as normal and not acted upon as the serious thing it is. 2013 was shortly after the new large push against bullying which is likely one large reason as to the creation and popularity of this work. However even with the anti bullying movement it would not have become popular if it was not in itself an effective piece at conveying its own point against bullying and contributing to the cause. Koyczan made his piece so successful by successfully using ethos and pathos to make hard hitting grounded points to his purpose. • 41. Leonid Fridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds In his essay America Needs Its Nerds , author Leonid Fridman discusses the stigma against so called nerds and how these nerds are essential to America in keeping up with other countries. He does this providing several examples. However, this essay is ultimately weak because of the broadness of his examples, as well as the overarching strawman he creates to represent society . By relying solely on these examples, he creates a very simple one sided argument To begin the essay, Fridman states that our society is one which has only derogatory terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious and academically serious (lines 2 4). As a broad statement, this holds true. However, in the context of having a living person with a brain being the audience, this crumbles. Nerd and geek defined by Fridman ... He claims this is telling a fact about our language and culture , despite most people probably not knowing (or caring) what the word means beforehand (One might say that not knowing or caring what nerd means is a sign of being a non intelligent non nerd, but does knowing that definition really make you smarter than/superior to anyone else?). Fridman then states that at Harvard University, an Ivy league university known for its prestigiousness, that anti intellectualism is rampant . He provides an example saying that most students are ashamed of how much they study, but his lack of concrete evidence for this example makes it seem extremely unlikely. Some may say that the unlikeliness of it adds to the essay, in the nuh uh no way! sort of way, but truthfully, it doesn t. It detracts from it by lessening his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Body Imagery In Art Analysis Hollander discusses a new tradition of painting half length portraits and first leads the reader through the gradual move to more erotic and sensual images portrayed in artworks. She presents works by Titian and Tintoretto and explains that artists of the period portrayed real people in exotic poses, sometimes with bare chested men or semi exposed women s breasts, and titled their works as mythical characters. Throughout the chapter, the author leads the reader through a variety of images that show the gradual progression of exposed skin in artworks, from draped modern garments assuming folds of classical draperies, which revealed parts of the body, to works such as Caravaggio s Boy Bitten by a Lizard (1571 1610) where the attention on the ... She describes how an abundance of drapery surrounding the sitter expressed wealth, or as seen in Francisco de Zurbarian s Saint Serapion (1598 1664), monochromatic heavy woolen garments add a sense of emotional burden to what is already seen in the facial and body imagery. Hollander also describes how artist Johann Liss uses bright, hectic, swirling drapery to add drama and a sexual distraction to the murder scene depicted in his painting Judith in the Tent of Holofernes (1595 1631). In all the examples Hollander presents, she illustrates how fabric and draperies were used by artists of the late sixteenth early seventeenth century to evoke a particular emotion relative to the subject matter and not just for depicting utilitarian clothing to cover the body. Ending the chapter is a discussion of the Hollywood photographers use of the ½ portrait which often depicts exposed skin and draped garments to convey sensuality and the sitters consciousness of one s beauty. • 44. Why I Learned The Piano As a thirteen year old I could only watch game shows for so long, and that day I could not take anymore. I couldn t sit still and needed to hear more than Steve Harvey and the Family Feud theme song, so I wandered into her sitting room that always felt a little warmer than the rest of the house. Sometimes I would sit on the couch by the window and feel the sun s heat hit my face and watch the cars drive by. Sometimes I played with her giant record player, but vases covered it that day, so I went to her old piano. Dust covered sheet music and instruction books filled the bench of the piano. I flipped through them and found songs I knew, and I became determined. That day I decided I wanted to learn the piano. Every day at the same time I would go in her sitting room and practice, and every day she would listen and tell me how good a job I was doing. Some days she would even come play with me. Every day of that summer looked exactly the same: sleep in the morning on the couch, have lunch with my mom, and play piano in the afternoon. It did change on some days when my grandmother would take me to the Baskin Robins down the street, and we d get ice cream, but I d always practice when we got back. I convinced myself I would become a great pianist, but my left hand never did anything. It never moved the same way my right hand did, but my grandmother never said anything about it, she always encouraged me, no matter how bad my playing actually sounded. I lost my drive for piano ... It also helps with the corporate processes for structural and cultural changes of Blue Cross Blue Shield. Change management helps our organization realize why the change was essential so that we can accept all changes and goals to move forward. Change in our organization is good for all of the employees since it will help them gain new skills and competencies and this in fact is an organizational goal of the company. The first step for our change management strategy is creating urgency. For this change to occur, the whole establishment needs to be on board and really wants it. Developing a sense of urgency around the need for change can trigger the initial motivation to get things moving. Without motivation, individuals will not help and the efforts for the change will not go anywhere (Kotter, 1995, p. 60). Managing change across the board if it is not done correctly can be damaging. The second step is to convince our employees that change is necessary. This frequently takes strong management and noticeable support from important people within our organization. Dealing with change is not enough one will have to lead everyone in this process. Once shaped our change partnership or coalition needs to work together as team and continue to build urgency round the need for change. Our goal is to be successful. • 46. Revolutionary War Revolutionary Essay By defining a revolution as a radical change of conditions , the Revolutionary War was unquestionably a revolution. In determining whether the Revolutionary War was revolutionary or not, one must assess the extent to which society transformed before, throughout, and after the war. Although some colonists sought to preserve the rights they enjoyed from tradition and custom, the Revolutionary War can be described as revolutionary because men put their life as well as their honor on the line to fight in a war when triumph seemed an unreachable goal. This was done to make radical changes such as formulating an entirely new system of government instead of creating a monarchy, as they had known. In the First Continental Congress, which occurred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When people are over three thousand miles away from each other, representation can be difficult. When America first separated itself from Britain, the founding fathers attempted to create the least amount of similarities as possible. The need to be different from Britain was shown primarily through the creation of the Articles of Confederation as they represented a strong reaction against the strong central government of Britain. The Continental Congress adopted the Articles on November 15, 1777 and they served as the United States first Constitution. There were many problems that came with the Articles. The government they created was so weak that tasks could not be completed efficiently. Because of the weak government, America could not grow economically which led to political uncertainty. The government had no power to enforce any legislation it passed and congress was denied the power to tax. Money was one of the greatest issues with the Articles of Confederation. Since the government was denied the right to tax, they could only request money from the states and these requests were often denied. The legislature never had enough money to run the government or to fulfill financial obligations to bondholders, soldiers, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Authority and American Usage Authority and American Usage: Part 1 Authority and American Usage written by David Foster Wallace, poses an argument about the English language, and the different beliefs of its usage. This essay was written in defense of Bryan A. Garner s, A Dictionary of Modern American Usage. His argument in Authority and American Usage is the difference the between prescriptivism perception and the descriptivism perception (Linguistic terms that could easily be made into smaller, more understandable words for people like me). Since the beginning of time, language has evolved. Another aspect that Wallace goes in depth with is our current writing system. He describes how currently, our education system is leaning more toward a descriptive type of writing style, rather than the traditional and formal prescriptive writing style. Language changes so often that even the way teachers are expecting their student to write are different from that of 20 years ago. Ross 4 Authority and American Usage, an interesting essay written by the brilliant and quick witted David Foster Wallace, presents an argument on different ways of understanding the ever changing American usage in the English language. Keeping up with the English language in America is like chasing your new, untrained puppy down the street. Tiring and basically impossible to get a hold of. Over the past centuries, the English language has evolved so much, that if you took a person from the 13th century and threw them in the middle of New York City in 2013, it would be as if two different languages were being spoken.
