Essay On Kerkoff And Davis Filter Theory
Describe and Evaluate two theories of the formation of romantic relationships Kerckoff and
Davis (1962) presented a form of relationship formation theory known as the filter model. They
believed that we have three filters that are important at different times before we can enter a
relationship. We start with a field of availables , those who are free for relationships and
gradually narrow them down using different stages to a field of desirables, and those who we
would consider as potential partners. The first filter is the social and demographic variables where
we tend to pick people with similar educational and economic background to us. The second filter
is the similarity of attitudes and values, where people with different... Show more content on

However, Gruber Baldini et al (1995) found that couples who were similar were more likely to be
together 20 years later, suggesting that similarity continues to be important. That strengthen the
validity of the experiment. Furthermore, Kerchkoff used a student population in his study
therefore this research may not be generalised to older or different members of society and adult
relationship formation. In addition, the Filter theory fails to take into account individual
differences. In real life, people give importance to different factors. The filter model is a 3 stage
theory ,which makes it quite artificial and fails to capture the dynamics and fluency of
relationships. In real life, relationships change and develop, some flow faster/slower and these
factors cannot fit neatly into stages. Therefore the filter theory can t be applied to all relationships
and is an incomplete explanation for relationship formation. Moreover, the filter model is
reductionist as it simplifies complex relationships down to three stages. There is more to
relationships than the theory states as the filter theory fails to explain love and other factors that
may lead to the formation of relationships. Also the social demographic filter may be less important
today as we have greater mobility and the ability to make contact and stay in touch electronically

The Bible On Gender Roles In The Bible
The Bible on Gender Roles
The Holy Bible is full of advice on every issue known to humanity. This advice varies in topics
from society s functions to foreign policy and even gender roles. Today s western culture is very
confused when it comes to gender roles, swinging over the last over 50 years from a male
dominated society to a large portion of the feminist society fighting for female dominance and the
disappearance of chivalry. Society is always searching for answers from science and philosophy
but constantly fails to look in the right places. The Bible is the foundation of truth and it requires the
ultimate amount of attention if any community plans to be successful for any length of time. The
education of modern society on what the Bible says about gender roles is necessary to achieve
mutual understanding of beliefs.
The Bible is full of statements and teachings on the topic of gender. Unfortunately, these are often
ignored in the home. For example, the different roles of mothers and fathers. The Bible claims that
mothers are called to be involved in the teaching, nurturing, and mentorship of their children.
According to Proverbs 13:24, fathers are also called to discipline their children, to teach them, and
to mentor them. Parents roles are very similar according to the Bible with the caveat that fathers
are called to be the disciplinarians and leaders of the household. Another example of the
differences between genders according to the Bible is that of a Godly

Moby Dick, By Herman Melville
Moby Dick, written by Herman Melville, has captivated the eyes of countless readers for more
than a century. The novel s incorporation of Romanticism and the American Renaissance
recognizes it as an exceptionally renowned work of American literature. To create this epic tale,
Melville uses the encounters that the Pequod has with other whaling ships, known as gams,
combined with symbols and omens. Melville, who uses many chapters in the novel to provide
information about whaling, designates the entirety of chapter 53, The Gam , to explain gams: a
social meeting of two (or more) Whale ships, generally on a cruising ground; when, after
exchanging hails, they exchange visits by boats crews: the two captains remaining, for the time, on

The fact that Ahab immediately asks the captain of the Goney about Moby Dick, without any
formal introduction, displays his monomania in full effect. He gets straight to the point and
throws introduction out the window, as he cares only about information that will benefit him
and his chase for Moby Dick. The Goney s captain is unable to reply to Ahab, but Ahab does not
really care about this, as he chooses rather to take advantage of his windward position (258).
Although the two ships do not have a proper gam, Melville s story of the gam clearly exploits
Ahab s monomania. He has no interest for the Goney because they have nothing practical to
offer him with regards to his search for Moby Dick. However, as the two ships pass one another,
fish that were swimming along the Pequod leave and swim to the Goney: shoals of small
harmless fish, that for some days before had been placidly swimming by our side, darted away
with what seemed shuddering fins, and ranged themselves fore and aft with the stranger s flanks
(258). According to sailors, an Albatross is a symbol for good luck. Therefore, Melville uses the
migration of the fish away from the Pequod to represent a bad omen for the fate of Ahab and his
crew. Since the Goney is also named the

Impact Of Communication Technology
Computer Programmer
How has communications technology affected this career in the past? Communication technologies
has affected computer programmers in the past because the first programmers were trying to
create a program for calculations to more easily do math. The first programmer was Ada King,
moreover she wrote the first algorithm to be carried out by a computer from 1842 1843. The first
computer was not electric, but all mechanical. Since then computer programmers have been
creating many software s to enhance communications technologies. Around 1889 1896, Herman
Hollerith created the tabular and keypunch system to process information and had also created a
control panel that could allow the tabular and keypunch system to preform different tasks. He
founded the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896, which later became IBM. Communications
technologies was vital during World War II. During the war the first digital and programmable
computers were used. They were known as Colossus, and their purpose was to decode encrypted
messages from the Germans. In 1947, the first bug in computers was reported by Grace Murray
Hopper, it was an actual bug as a moth had flow into the Mark Aiken II Relay Calculator. It had
to be debugged . By 1949, the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator was created and was
known as the first programmable computer with practical storage. It could calculate lists of prime
numbers and tables of squares. In 1954, John Backus created the

The Extinction Of The Wolf Populations
In the past several years news organizations have reported that the wolf populations have been
dwindling and researchers are attempting to bring the wolf populations back to what they should
be. The population on Royal Isle has been struggling to survive. Many populations are suffering
on the island and researchers are struggling to make the population hit a point where they are able
to survive without overpopulating or under populating. The wolf population in upper Michigan
has now hit a high where people are starting to hunt them to protect wildlife. It used to be a very
small population but now it is thriving which will cause adverse consequences. This is also a
struggle in Yellowstone National Park. People have a lot of different... Show more content on

The animals who ate off of the scrapes from wolf kills now have to go to other places to find
protein and food (Kluger). Once the scientists thought that the population was getting to low the
new pack was introduced. Once the new pack was introduced the other animal populations got
more under control. The coyotes were brought back down to a manageable size which helped
the other populations come back to normal range. This is a good sign because now the
environment can go back to the way it should be and be lush again. Now that the wolf
population is back to where it should be, other concerns have come into the topic. The grey wolf
is a protected species that cannot be hunted in any way. This is causing problems with the locals.
Many farmers feel that they need to protect their livestock by whatever means necessary. With
the wolves being protected they cannot shot them like they would back in the older times. The
wolf population that was introduced back in 1995 is from Canada though. They are also
considered an experimental group because they are being observed. This causes concern to the
civilians living near the wolves. The wolves in the experimental group can be shot or killed to
protect livestock but the protected group cannot. If the protected group is killed there would be
consequences. This leaves a question every time a wolf is shot as to whether or not the wolf is

On the other hand, refrigerated pasta quality was always qualified higher than dry pasta quality. This
analysis concludes that refrigerated pasta had a higher potential market than refrigerated pizza did
because the first one had a clear advantage. Refrigerated pizza had to compete with the quality of
takeout pizza. * In the concept attributes for refrigerated pasta, the issue of the price did not
come up. People might be able to pay a premium price for having refrigerated pasta with the
quality of fresh pasta. In contrast, the attributes for refrigerated pizza showed this price issue. 23%
of people said that price should be improved.

Chapter 38 Angiosperm Reproduction and Biotechnology
38.1
Q: Distinguish between pollination and fertilization.
A: In angiosperms, pollination is the transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma. Fertilization is
the fusion of the egg and sperm to form the zygote; it cannot occur until after the growth of the
pollen tube from the pollen grain.
Q: What is the benefit of seed dormancy?
A: Seed dormancy prevents the premature germination of seeds. A see will germinate only when
the environmental conditions are optimal for the survival of its embryo as a young seedling.

38.3
Q: Compare traditional plant breeding methods with genetic engineering.
A: Traditionally breeding and genetic engineering both involved artificial selection for desired
traits. However genetic engineering techniques facilitate faster gen transfer and are not limited to
transferring genes between closely related varieties or species.
Q: Explain some benefits and risk of GM crops
A: GM crops may be more nutritious and less susceptible to insect damage or pathogens that invade
insect damaged plants. They also may not require as much chemical spraying. However, unknown
risk may include adverse effects on human health and nontarget organism and the possibility of
transgene escape.
Q: why does Bt maize have less fumonisin than non GM maize?
A: Bt miaze suffers less inect damage, therefore Bt maize plants are less likely to infected by
fumonisin producing fungi that infect plants through wounds.
Q: In a few species, chloroplast genes are inherited only from sperm. How might this influence
effort to prevents transgene escape?

Memory Vs Information Processing Model
Memory Learning has persisted over time information that has been stored, and in many cases, can
be recalled.
Information Processing Model The principal model of memory is the three box model, also called
the information processing model. This model proposes the three stages that information passes
through before it is stored.
Sensory Registers Also called sensory memory, refers to the first and most immediate form of
memory you have. The sensory register is your ultra short term memory that takes in sensory
information through your five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) and holds it for no
more than a few seconds.

Mnemonist refers to an individual with the ability to remember and recall unusually long lists of
data, such as unfamiliar names, lists of numbers, entries in books, etc.
Flashbulb Memory a clear memory of an emotionally significant moment or event.
Memory Terms not in your book
Iconic Memory a momentary sensory memory of visual stimuli; a photographic or picture image
memory lasting no more than a few tenths of a second.
Selective Attention the focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus.
Echoic Memory a momentary sensory memory of auditory stimuli; if attention is elsewhere,
sounds and words can still be recalled within 3 or 4 seconds.

of the stone tools had marked an incredible step for mam kind. There were two types of people
that thrived during this time. These societies were very similar yet different in their social,
economic, and political structures. The foraging societies appeared earlier then the urbanized

Essay On Interracial Dating
Interracial and Cross Cultural Dating of Generation Y Interracial romance has been an issue in the
United States since the first English settlers established colonies during the seventeenth century.
Over the years, views toward interracial relationships in America have changed greatly. The
interracial datingtrend among today s teenagers is increasing at a steady rate (Grapes 49).
However, there are still many biases facing Gen Y youth who choose to date someone of another
race. A look at the history of interracial romance in the United States will shed light on today s
attitudes.

On one occasion, the man was mobbed and nearly lost his life (Landau 3).
Even decades later, white society seemed determined to prevent interracial romances in most
instances. A variety of obstacles were used to prohibit these relationships. Many social scientists in
the past focused on the supposed pathological aspects of the interracial relationship, and they
assumed that anyone involved in such a relationship must be disturbed in some way. In one case, a
young white woman s grandmother had her placed in a mental institution after the young woman
announced her engagement to an African American (Landau 5). When a young black man named
Leroy Gardner enrolled in Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1943, he had to sign a formal
agreement promising not to socialize with the white females on campus. Social scientists have
observed many justifications for black white relationships, such as the need to rebel against
parents or society; a passion for the exotic or forbidden fruit, the blacks desire to get even with the
dominant culture, or whites desire to atone for past racism (Majete 10).
In 1967, Loving v. Virginia cleared all legal barriers to interracial marriagesand relationships. This
legislation made it legal to marry interracially, but many people weren t willing to accept these
relationships. For instance, in 1994 a white principal named Hulond Humphries caused uproar at

Cardiomyopathy attacks when the damaged muscle is unable to pump blood as it should causing
tissue hypoxia. Kloner et al, explained that men between the ages of 35 and 50 are the most
diagnosed group of alcoholic cardiomyopathy when compared to other age groups (2015). When an
individual has a history of alcohol abuse, the damaged heart muscle cannot pump enough blood to
circulate to the rest to the rest of the body; the individual become very fatigue, thirsty, weak,
dizziness with shortness of breath. As the disease progresses, it leads to cardiac heart failure, a
condition that affect the heart chambers. Long term alcohol use has been associated with the cause
of left ventricular dysfunction. The left side heart failure causes fluid to back up into the lungs
which suppresses an individual s lung making it hard to breath. Excessive alcohol intake has been
linked to many cardiac disease including stroke, hypertension, and arrhythmias. Clinical
manifestations exhibit dyspnea, chest pain, fatigue, syncope, weakness and palpitations (Kloner et

The Old Man And The Library
Proverbs are commonly used in Africa are signifiers that help identifies the characteristics and
values of a certain culutre. They are usually simple but provide the reader or listener with an
image that requires reflection for the individual and the society from which it originates. The
African proverb, when an old man dies, it is as if a library has burned down illustrates the
importance of wisdom, age, and experience. This proverb highlights the necessity from preserving
historical knowledge and the devastation that comes with losing that knowledge. Libraries are
symbols of education and information typically containing works of written history whereas the old
man who is in juxtaposition with the library has preserved historical information in his memory, the
library in his mind. By placing the old man and the library as equals, the African proverbs is stating
the importance of human wisdom and the passing of history through the mouths of wise men to
youthful ears. This proverb is reminiscent of the importance of oral history in many African
cultures, one being the ancient Mali Empire. D.T. Niane s version of the Old Mali epic discusses
the importance of the griot, or oral historians, and places the emphasis and priority on the griot,
rather than the kings. The griots were the libraries and when they died, much of the information
they possessed would die as well, unless it was passed on to another griot. The symbolism in this
proverb can then be taken quite literally

Under the goal approach, the organization sets a goal(s) that could be attained by incorporating the
behavior of the employees by definition accordingly. Under the system resource approach, the
organization defines and sets an interrelated total task implying the external and internal factors
upon which the organization depends for its survival. In the constituency approach, the organization
looks for the opportunities for having the numerous constituencies applicable for both in external
and internal arena. It could be with the OP assessment focusing on the fulfillment of the
constituency needs.
Organizational performance covers three definite areas of firm results: (a) financial performance
(profits, return on assets, return on investment, etc.); (b) product market performance (sales, market

The Negative Consequences Of The Vietnam War
The vietnam war produced many outcomes which were more negatives overall for both countries.
This war made a mark because it was a prolonged war where the essential use of the helicopters it
was used like never before. The helicopters were one of the essential transportation in the difficult
terrain of Vietnam. In this war the whole population of Vietnam was involved in a indirect and
direct way . The civilian population was mobilized to any active participation and suffered the war
situation almost in the same circumstances as military forces.
Some of the consequences felt immediately, but some surged later on with the time. After the war
the Vietnam country became rule under the communist and the U.S break relationship with the
county. Another result of the war was the death of about 57,685 Americans and around 160
thousand wounded. Also around 5,587 prisoners of war between military and civilian that got
released. The war was so catastrophic that produced more than 2 million Vietnamese killed, 3
million wounded and hundreds of thousands of orphaned children. Approx. 12 million refugees.
The sad part was that this war left hundreds of thousands of soldiers with drug addiction and
affected by Agent Orange used during the war. The thousands of disabled, amputees, paralytics
mental disorders which were from soldiers of both countries and civilians of any age and gender. ...

Analysis Of In Praise Of The Urban Sandbox
In the article In Praise of the Urban Sandbox, Ferzoco (2011) explored simulation games like Sim
City and considered the eventual possibility of these games being used in more meaningful ways.
Through the article, the author focused on many meaningful points about gaming that did not
simply highlight the game s use as entertainment, but also went beyond these elements to explore
these simulations unique features and future potentials. Although Ferzoco s article was very
impressive in exploring these things, there were many points that he did not analyze in great
enough depth or did not consider at all. One of the interesting things that the author synthesized in
writing this piece was in relation to his own approach to the games. He indicated,... Show more

It would be much easier for game designers to develop true to life depictions of New York City
streets and work hand in hand with city officials to identify logistical challenges that the city is
currently or may face in the future. These games would then be a way for the game designers to
collectively pool the creative thinking of the thousands of people who play these games to address
these pressing infrastructure challenges. Ferzoco (2011) indicated that, Many of today s
simulations are directly inspired by the interactivity of mass market games (p. 11). Such a point
would seem to mean that although the potential exists for game designers to create more realistic
simulations, since the current types of games produced are based on what is popular in the gaming
environment, that is what gamers will tend to produce in the future. Even of this insight is true, this
should not stop organizations and designers from taking the time and effort to explore more

A Narrative Essay About Working With A Special Person
Working with people, especially those who have complex disabilities has been my passion since
my teens. My 1st experience working with someone who was nonverbal and had autism was
babysitting my neighbor; this experience started me on my life path. Since then I have been a
special education teacher, a director of an independent living center, a school based Occupational
Therapist, an Assistive Technology consultant and Related Services Supervisor. I hold a BS in
Special Education, an MOT in Occupational Therapy and am enrolled in the Continuing
Administrative License s program at Portland State University.
I am a hard working, dedicated and creative thinker. I believe in finding the simplest solution to
any problem in ways that meet all party s needs. This past year I was involved with establishing a
new way to transition students from Early Childhood to Kindergarten. Although the process was
well laid out through the ESD, there were several issues to navigate on the school district side.

Ancient Egypt And Greek Similarities
Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Greek civilizations both are two of the oldest studied civilizations
in our history that show up in our everyday live. The Ancient Egyptian civilization, that was
centrally located in Nile valley, is believed to have started/formed around 3150 BC and continued
till the end of the Pharaoh rule in 31 BC. The Ancient Greek civilizationis thought to have started
from 1100 BC till about 146 BC. Many similarities and differences existed between these two
civilizations, even though they both were around during in the same timeframe (1150 BC to 146
BC), they were located in different geographical areas around the world changing the development

Ancient Egyptian politics, thought the pharaoh was the main ruler of Egypt and the lower class did

Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was some sort of a god. The Ancient Greeks also had a very
complex religious system with many different gods including Zeus the king and ruler over all the
other gods.
The biggest thing that sets these two apart are the differences in their art techniques. In Ancient
Egypt painting, sculpting, crafts, and architecture were very common. The Ancient Egyptians art
were influenced by nature and animals, they used bright colors and made bold art. The ancient
Egyptians painted lots of their paintings on papyrus, a kind of paper that they made from the

What Is The Difference Between Igbo And Ibo
The Ibo village and Maine are very different cultures and celebrate things differently. In the
village, Okonowko has 2 titles in his young age. He is a hard working man and he doesn t like
festivals because he would rather be farming his land. Some similarities between Okonowko s
village of Ibo and Maine are that both harvestfestivals have music. In the village of Ibo they beat on
loud drums and in Maine we have a band playing covers of songs during a harvest festival. Also, in
Maine we come together during this celebration and talk to each other and the same goes for the
village people. In Maine and Ibo there are events that are planned for the festival, giving the
people things to do there. In contrast, the harvest festival is different for both communities.
During the Village of Ibo s harvest festival they praise there earth goddess because they believe
she is the judge of morality and conduct, in Maine we don t do so because there are many
different types of religions within Maine. Also, in Ibo they have wrestling matches and in Maine
we don t participate in wrestling matches for the harvest festival. Instead, in Maine we walk
around to food stands and look at decorated pumpkins. From this evidence I can assume that
religion is a priority in the Ibo village, where as socializing is Maine s priority during its harvest
festivals.
In the Ibo village, their justice court is very similar to Maine s. In both societies a group of people

Fatima Mernissi s Dreams Of Trespass
The story of Fatima Mernissi is truly an enchanting and empowering one. In the book Dreams of
Trespass, we are given a glimpse of the young girl s adventurous life in a traditional Moroccan
harem during the 1940 s and early 1950 s. Through her journey in the harem, we see how life in
the harem can be enchanting and confined at the same time. In this book, Fatima elaborates life in
a traditional Moroccan harem, what a harem really means, the many women in her life that
continuously challenge the norms of her culture and society, and how that has inspired her to
dream big and work towards achieving freedom outside of the frontiers. In the beginning of the
book, Fatima begins to describe life at the Mernissi household. Fatima lived in a Moroccan... Show

That is something I too asked myself multiple times while reading the book. That is something
that Fatima herself questioned many times while she was growing up. Something I immediately
began to adore about Fatima while reading her tales was her unstoppable curiosity and need to
ask questions. She asks many questions to feel more knowledgeable and to understand her
surroundings. However, as we learn about the many things forbidden inside the harem, Fatima
tells us that asking too many questions is one of them. That is only because asking a question
such as what is a harem? is not really a question that the adults will volunteer to answer (Mernissi,
39). Like many children do, Fatima and her cousins loved to break rules. Fatima, Samir, and their
other cousin, Malika used to occasionally climb onto the forbidden terrace. According to Fatima,
Samir and Malika s main purpose to climb onto the highest terrace was to push their investigation
of harems further. They would sit there and ponder on the unanswered questions by the adults and
find out the truth behind these questions. They would ask each other rather simple questions: Is a
harem a house in which a man lives with many wives? Do all married men have harems? Can you
have more than one master in a harem? (Mernissi, 150) As simple as these questions sound, they
figured that the answers to these questions were more complicated than they thought. They used
their own harem and other harems they knew up to answers these questions but eventually never
found the true answer. While many of the adults gave different answers to what a harem, it was
truly Lalla Yasmina, Fatima s maternal grandmother who gave her true closer on the definition of
a harem. She explained to Fatima, The word harem was a slight variation to the word haram, the
forbidden, the proscribed. It was the opposite of halal, the permissible. Harem was the place where

Teamwork Is Essential For Business Success
Introduction: Teams: A group whose individual efforts result in a performance that is greater
than the sum of individual efforts (Loura ,lecture slides). The team has joint, specific collective
work products such as experiments, reports, products, etc. An example can be your course work
based on a team based project (David Knights, Hugh Willmott, 2007, p.120).The question arise is
that is teams are important to the organisations; the answer is yes; because organisations are
much more likely to perform well when their people work effectively as a team. This is because
a good team creates unity where the together effect of the team is greater than the sum of the
individual efforts. In addition to that working together in a team can apply individual
perspectives, experiences, and skills to solve complex problems and also creating new solutions
and ideas that may be beyond the scope of any one individual. Teamwork is essential for business
success: The adoption of teams has become essential to successful organizations of different kinds
and sizes.Teams advantage associations by consolidating individuals who can accomplish
objectives speedier and more viably through coordinated effort than can people working alone. In
1999, almost 50% of all U.S. associations utilized teams, and now days they are ordinary in

Cultural Studies On Race And Social Classes
In today s society, culture is impacting our everyday life, experience and social relations; we are

religious beliefs that sway society over they have and have not s. We come in contact every day
with cultural diversity in the workplace, schools and need to learn to not offend another person
based on their cultural group. Most people assume how a person is based on their appearances and
their race.
In today s society, people are closed minded, and do not take the opportunity getting to know the
other person because of stereotyping and racism. Even though we all have different opinions
toward other cultures, norms, beliefs and values we should all respect each other differences. We
should consider learning from one another and not judge a person based on their race, ethnicity,
gender and religion. As a society, it is very important; we educated ourselves in other cultures, even
though we all have different values and beliefs.
Cultural studies are influenced by the Marxist interpretation of society, but according to, Stuart Hall
believed that mass media has highlighted those people that are already in positions of power and
the media has exploited the poor keeping them powerless. Hall says that he describes mass media as

The Importance Of Religious Freedom
Crying foul about need to protect religious freedom, opponents of same sex marriage should be
careful what they wish for. Erecting it as a bulwark to change, they illuminate a common
misunderstanding of what the term means, highlighting how it has become a proxy for religious
privilege a means of favouring certain subset of faithbased beliefs.
They play this card at their own peril, because a wider understanding of religious freedom would
threaten the many privileges faith continues to enjoy in this country. And further, by trading on an
historical respect for religious faith, and seeking to entrench religious privilege, they risk eroding
that respect even further.
Clearly religious freedom cannot mean that one set of beliefs ought to take precedence over
another, nor that religious beliefs should trump nonreligious beliefs.
However, religious freedom is widely understood to be exclusive to religious beliefs. And, for the
threat argument to have any teeth, one must accept that society should actively discriminate in
favour of religious convictions. Cake makers, florists and wedding registrars must be allowed to act
in accordance with their faith, notwithstanding the beliefs of those supporting the same sex union.
The threat is that the law will force the faithful to act against their conscience.
This is framed as protection . But, why are only religious beliefs worthy of protection? What this
means in practice, is the faithful gain a special pass to exempt

The Importance Of A Team For A Dysfunctional Team
This essay will discuss and evaluate what a team is and how a team can function successfully, it
will also explore the factors that cause a team to be effective or ineffective and the barriers
contributing to a dysfunctional team.
Teamwork is a basic but important part of nursing which preregistered nurses are expected to
become part of and will eventually perform some form of leadership. Effective teamwork and
leadership skills are necessary qualities for a nurse to develop and are important to ensure patient
safety (West, 2012).
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2010) state that to work effectively as part of a
team you must work cooperatively and respect the skills, expertise and contributions of your
colleagues and you must be willing to share your skills and experience for the benefit of your
colleagues. This is important in the healthcare setting as patients rely on an efficient, well
motivated team to take care of them. Therefore, this essay will also discuss leadership,
discriminating between good and bad, and it will also consider the concept of followership.
Furthermore, team building and organisational behaviour will be considered using relevant theories
and methods.
A team is a basic functioning unit within an organisation and is defined as a group of people
organised to work independently and cooperatively, meeting the given requirements by achieving
the same goals and purpose (Heathfield, 2014). Frias Martinez et al (2004) supports this definition

procedure, ie. whipples, puestows, and gastrectomies, to decompress the stomach or small bowel

anesthesia once the surgery is complete. By definition, a blindly inserted nasogastric tube is one
inserted without the use of imaging guidance, including fluoroscopy or ultrasound. The two most
common complications of blindly guided tubes are insertion in the lungs and inaccurate placement
in the esophagus. On rare occasions, nasogastric tubes have been lodged in the brain or spinal

Poverty As Seen In Flavo s Home
Poverty as Seen in Favelas Presented in Flavio s Home : Fighting For Survival What does it
really mean to be poor? Does it mean that people don t have enough money to buy new shoes
when hundreds more lie in the closet? Or does it mean that there is not an enough form of payment

on the social status of the individual, and sometimes, that person does not have an idea of what
poverty even means simple because money falls from the sky. With that in mind, what would

Maternal Filicide Essay
A child that is murdered by their mother is known as maternal filicide . Children that killed
within their first year of being born is known as infanticide . An infant killed with the first 24
hours of being born is known as neonaticide (Friedman, S., Resnick, P. J. 2007). Unfortunately,
these words exist because there is a history of children being killed by their parents, which yearly
about 450 children intentionally murdered by a parent. Furthermore, FBI homicide data
correlates three out of four child victims are younger than 5. While Northeastern data a large
portion of filicide are from parents that are going through some form of custody battle (Bello,
2014). These statistics makes Susan s case even more unique that her case goes against the
majority or what data suggest. Another case that goes against the norm is Mitchelle Blair who
also committed maternal filicide. She claim she killed her two children, a 13 year old daughter
and 9 year old son. Mitchelle says she killed her children because they were raping her youngest
child (Chuck, 2015). To add to this list Tonya Thomas murdered her four children ages 12,13, 15,

of piracy as a victimless. Individual artists, ranging from celebrity musical acts like Metallica to
the stay at home mothers who sell digital scrapbooking kits in their free time, frequently speak
out against piracy when talking to their fans. Grassroots organizations also work to educate the
public about music property rights through online marketing campaigns. Technology has given
the Music companies a fighting chance in preventing music piracy. Software programs can be
created to require authorization codes or online registration forms that make piracy more
difficult because they are only given with legal copies. For downloadable content, digital rights
management systems limit the number of devices that can play a particular movie or song in
order to stop people from sharing unauthorized copies. Unfortunately, there are still resourceful
hackers and people in the piracy industry that still continue to find ways to get around these
measures. Lawsuits may seem like an obvious way to stop piracy, but legal action is typically a
last resort with the widespread use of the Internet, it is way too time consuming and expensive to
track down every web site and person that is involved in the production and sharing of illegal music
files. Piracy laws also vary from country to country, making enforcement rather

Essay about Public Grazing Lands
The grazing of public lands has become a very controversial issue over the last couple of decades.
This is due to the fact that there are some people who believe that grazing the land is beneficial to
the wildlife and the different plant species there. Then there are other people who have the belief
that the grazingof livestockon public lands is detrimental to wildlife and plant health. Therefore,
they believe that it is actually doing more harm than good.
What are Public Grazing Lands? Public lands are properties that are not owned by private land
owners, but instead are owned by the federal government. Ranchers are given permits or leases to
graze their livestock on these government owned lands. The government agency that has been ...

Taylor Grazing Act The Taylor Grazing Act as passed in 1934 (Stimpert). According to Marc
Stimpert in, Counterpoint: opportunities lost and opportunities gained: separating truth from myth
in the western ranching debate , after the passage of the Taylor Grazing Act the Congress started
to use the Forest Service s system of allocating grazing lands. There were three purposes for
passing the act 1) to regulate occupancy of remaining public lands; 2) protect rangelands from
harm; and 3) to stabilize the livestock industry (Stimpert). The passage of the act gave power to the
Secretary of Interior to create grazing districts on public lands (Stimpert). The Taylor Grazing Act
also has the BLM regulate the occupancy and use of a grazing district. According to Stimpert, the
act balance the need to protect ranchers with the need to protect rangelands.
BLM and Management Aspects
The BLM manages about 245 million acres of public land and of those lands they manage 157
million grazing livestock. The BLM website states that the terms and conditions for grazing
livestock on BLM managed lands are set forth in

Lucretius Beliefs
Epicurus supported that the images people had for gods were varying due to the different
preconceptions that had been implanted to every person separately. Very often there were false
convictions expressed by people even if their preconceptions reflected their own natural goals.
Lucretius protested against voices who presented gods as having evil intents and as prone to
partiality and fury: Unhappy human race, to attribute such behavior, and bitter wrath too, to the
gods! What lamentations did they lay up for themselves in those days, what wounds for us, what
tears for our descendants ? Moreover, Lucretius stated: Unless you expel these ideas from your

Even Epicurus followers were confused and perplexed by Epicurus theology such as Lucretius and
Cicero s Vellius who combined information and syllogisms that satisfied realists as well as idealists.
Both interpretative parties had their own reasons to attach Epicurus both to the realistic and the
idealistic context and both of them had to defend their theories against arguments that worth
consideration. I personally believe that Epicurus was more an idealist than a realist. He obviously
stated that there are gods a statement that could easily describe him as a realist but the fact that he
encouraged people to construct the conception of god and that their true nature, lifestyle and way
of thinking were completely unknown to people compel me to believe that Epicurus was idealist
and gods were merely thought constructs articulating people s unrealistic view of the life they
desired. Philodemus mentioned that Epicurus involved himself in all the traditional festival and
sacrifices . However, this attestation does not prove that Epicurus was surely devoutly religious
and believed that gods were existing living beings; he could have acted in that way to give a boost
to his social status or even to protect himself from the dangerous accusations of

Digital Piracy And Its Impact On Society Essay
When Game of Thrones premiers to a HBO audience of 10.3 million viewers through legitimate
channels, an additional 4.3 million viewers is estimated to watch the premier illegitimately. These
digital pirates cause quite a controversy for the show`s industry, legitimate viewers, and the show
runners themselves, even. Mixed thoughts, reactions, and even discrepancies in quantitative
numbers shroud the perception and comprehension of modern digital piracy. Examining the
culture of piracy, how and why people pirate content, as well as the legal and industrial
components of piracy can provide a contextualized understanding of piracy in the digital age, and
the future of piracy. Understanding technological and ethical factors that lead to piracy, and legal
and industrial repercussions to digital piracy are essential to navigating a discussion about
whether or not piracy has a great impact on industry or society as a whole. Defining digital piracy
is the first and foremost step towards understanding its role in today s world. For our purposes,
looking to Miriam Webster s definition of piracy as the act of illegally copying someone s product
or invention without permission, is an excellent starting point. Theft, by comparison, Miriam
Webster defines as felonious taking and removing of personal property with the intent to deprive
the rightful owner of it. To contrast theft and piracy, digital piracy does not deprive the rightful
owner of the item. With physical objects,

The Seventh Man Survivor Guilt Quotes
...we often take responsibility in a way that goes beyond what we can reasonably be held
responsible for. (Sherman 154). Philosophers explain survivor guilt using the preceding terms as an
internal conflict between two important characters. The foregoing quote from The Moral Logic of
Survivor Guilt defends the claim that the narrator of The Seventh Man should forgive himself for
his failure to save K.
The narrator of The Seventh Man experiences survivor guilt as an effect of failing to save K. s life.
Many people quarrel over whether the Seventh Man should or should not forgive himself for the
actions he took to save K. On the other hand, many events that lead up to K. s death show the
reasonable explanations behind why the Seventh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like previously stated, the only counterclaim people have on why he should not is the fact that
they blame him for having enough time. In The Seventh Man , the narrator states, ...K. s parents
failed to blame me... and ...everyone was so careful never to say anything to me about what had
happened. (Murakami 140). This evidence from the story is very crucial because it backs up the
information given about whether or not the counterclaim was logical. In this case the
counterclaim happened to not be so logical because the Seventh Man is not suffering from the
blame of others but the blame of himself. Additionally, the feelings the Seventh Man is having are
considered normal when experiencing survivor guilt however are not considered accurate. ...many
of the feelings that express character are not about what one has done or should have done, but
rather about what one cares deeply about. (Sherman 154). This quote explains why people should
not feel guilty in a situation they could not reasonably be held responsible for. It also explains
why they are feeling guilty to the point in which it is saying that you only experience survivor
guilt when you are close to the person being affected. Knowing this it tells you more about the
Seventh Man himself and that he is actually a valuable person

Martyrs To X-Rays
Martyrs To The X Rays The discovery of X rays was costly. Many lost their lives in the process
and those who survived with severe physical deformities were considered fortunate. Their
determination is inspiring and their work was a life changer.
The Beginning Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered X rays on November 8, 1895. About 14
days after Roentgen first noticed radiation activity, a man by the name of Friedrich Walkhoff
performed the first dental X ray. He did the X ray on himself first for twenty five minutes and then
on patients for thirty. Mr. Walkhoff only noticed hair loss on his patients around the exposed area,
nothing he considered significant (Sansare, Khanna, Karjodkar, 2011, p. 1). Minor effects of
radiation were first noticed in 1896 by Nikola Tesla... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was not until 1904 when William Rollins leaded the tube housing, installed the collimator, and
did many experiments on pregnant guinea pigs to conclude that X rays can kill fetus . Rollins
was the first to give many contributions to radiation protection. In 1907 an X ray manufacturer
by the name of Rome Wagner had the first idea of film badges. He would carry a photographic
plate in his pocket to see if he was getting too much exposure and then develop it each night.
Wagner was unable to perfect his idea because he died six months later from cancer(Kathern,
Ziemer, 1980, p. 3). In the 1920 s other methods of protection were introduced. The film badge
became a routine monitoring device. The unit to measure radiation was established and named the
Roentgen, and the first tolerance dose was created (Kathern, Ziemer 1980, p. 4). One might
classify radiation protection as quite the traveler since its journey transcended through both the
Pioneer Era and the Era of Progress. Today s advancements include a reduction in exposure time to
milliseconds and a switch to digital (Sansare, et al., 2011,

The Impact Of Applied Psychology On The Field Of Psychology
Consider the Impact of Applied and Behaviorist Psychology on the Field
In this paper I will discuss the impact that applied and behaviorist psychology has had on the field
of psychology. J. R. Angell at the University of Chicago is possibly one of the most advanced of
the functional psychologists, predicted that American psychology was prepared for better objectivity.
In 1910, he stated that it is possible that the term consciousness would more than likely vanish from
psychology, even more than the term soul had vanished (p. 209).
The most significant impact on the field of psychology was the explication of consciousness and its
functions. During the early 20th century, psychology began to changed dramatically; Therefore,
consciousness had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Angell also viewed the introspective study of consciousness as one of the most important method of
psychological research during the mid nineteenth century (Schultz Schultz, 2012).
What persons or ideas in early behaviorism would carry out the trend that Angell predicted?
During the nineteenth century, most psychologists viewed the emergence of functionalism as
being evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Therefore, the primary difference was in the subject
matter of their study; while structuralism attempted to examine and describe regulations concerning
psychological practices, functionalism was the trend that was considered to be more teleological
challenging, and focused more on the concept of how and why.
As a reaction of structuralism, functionalism emerged during the twentieth century. In comparing
structuralism and functionalism, functionalism is believed to have a more significant role in the
development and subject matter of psychology. Although, the role of functionalism was considered
to be strong it was not exclusive because behaviorism was considered by most to be the most
dominant trend of psychology.
John B. Watson (1878 1958) was one of Angell s most promising students at the University of
Chicago. Watson (1913) eventually became founder of the behaviorist school of psychology. He
carried out the trend of Angell s theoretical prediction in early behaviorism and became the first

Instead of attempting to resolve the conflict, viewing the Shimerdas as foreign and distant
provides a perspective that justifies violence. This is demonstrated as [Jake] landed Ambrosch a
blow on the head (83). Jake is able to justify the violence to himself, because the wrongdoing of
Ambrosch is amplified by nativism.
Giants in the Earth conveys a greater sense of difference a racialized depiction between us and
them with a frenzied panic from Per Hansa s family accompanying the appearance of Indians.
Fear of Indian s was common among settlers, who told stories of great massacres and atrocities
committed by tribes. When Indians approach, Per Hansa and neighboring settlers are indignant,
stating that there isn t any doubt the land they inhabit is theirs fearing the Indians may steal it or
attack his family (Rölvaag 73). Perception of Indians uncivilized and barbaric contribute to
their fear, as they watched with anxious attention the Indian band as it crept up the slope of the
hill towards the crest (68). Per Hansa creates greater distinction as he drew such ghastly pictures

racialized assumptions that Indians are savage (69). When he remarks that I guess we ll have to

Affordable Care Act
Through the presidency of Barack Obama, the United States was introduced with the Affordable
Care Act (ACA). This act gives the opportunity to individuals and families a greater access to
affordable health insurance options that include medical, dental, vision, and other types of health
insurance that they may not have been applicable for previously. The cost of health care can be
extremely expensive for those who face ongoing medical issues. Through the ACA, it allows
individuals to enroll that have lost previous coverage, had a child, or got married and the list
goes on. In 2014, Medicaid coverage had been expanded, through the ACA, to almost all adults
with incomes at or below 138% poverty in states that have accepted the expansion, and tax credits
are available for those with incomes up to 400% of poverty who purchase coverage through a
health insurance marketplace (Garfield). After the ACA was established the uninsured rates
dropped to a historic low.
Statistics on the Uninsured Even though after the Affordable Care Act was established and the
uninsured rates went down, there were still several Americans struggling to obtain health
insurance. By the end of 2015, there were still over 28 million people in America who were
ineligible for the ACA and still fall into the category of being uninsured (Garfield). The uninsured

  • 2. Essay On Kerkoff And Davis Filter Theory Describe and Evaluate two theories of the formation of romantic relationships Kerckoff and Davis (1962) presented a form of relationship formation theory known as the filter model. They believed that we have three filters that are important at different times before we can enter a relationship. We start with a field of availables , those who are free for relationships and gradually narrow them down using different stages to a field of desirables, and those who we would consider as potential partners. The first filter is the social and demographic variables where we tend to pick people with similar educational and economic background to us. The second filter is the similarity of attitudes and values, where people with different... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Gruber Baldini et al (1995) found that couples who were similar were more likely to be together 20 years later, suggesting that similarity continues to be important. That strengthen the validity of the experiment. Furthermore, Kerchkoff used a student population in his study therefore this research may not be generalised to older or different members of society and adult relationship formation. In addition, the Filter theory fails to take into account individual differences. In real life, people give importance to different factors. The filter model is a 3 stage theory ,which makes it quite artificial and fails to capture the dynamics and fluency of relationships. In real life, relationships change and develop, some flow faster/slower and these factors cannot fit neatly into stages. Therefore the filter theory can t be applied to all relationships and is an incomplete explanation for relationship formation. Moreover, the filter model is reductionist as it simplifies complex relationships down to three stages. There is more to relationships than the theory states as the filter theory fails to explain love and other factors that may lead to the formation of relationships. Also the social demographic filter may be less important today as we have greater mobility and the ability to make contact and stay in touch electronically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Bible On Gender Roles In The Bible The Bible on Gender Roles The Holy Bible is full of advice on every issue known to humanity. This advice varies in topics from society s functions to foreign policy and even gender roles. Today s western culture is very confused when it comes to gender roles, swinging over the last over 50 years from a male dominated society to a large portion of the feminist society fighting for female dominance and the disappearance of chivalry. Society is always searching for answers from science and philosophy but constantly fails to look in the right places. The Bible is the foundation of truth and it requires the ultimate amount of attention if any community plans to be successful for any length of time. The education of modern society on what the Bible says about gender roles is necessary to achieve mutual understanding of beliefs. The Bible is full of statements and teachings on the topic of gender. Unfortunately, these are often ignored in the home. For example, the different roles of mothers and fathers. The Bible claims that mothers are called to be involved in the teaching, nurturing, and mentorship of their children. According to Proverbs 13:24, fathers are also called to discipline their children, to teach them, and to mentor them. Parents roles are very similar according to the Bible with the caveat that fathers are called to be the disciplinarians and leaders of the household. Another example of the differences between genders according to the Bible is that of a Godly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Moby Dick, By Herman Melville Moby Dick, written by Herman Melville, has captivated the eyes of countless readers for more than a century. The novel s incorporation of Romanticism and the American Renaissance recognizes it as an exceptionally renowned work of American literature. To create this epic tale, Melville uses the encounters that the Pequod has with other whaling ships, known as gams, combined with symbols and omens. Melville, who uses many chapters in the novel to provide information about whaling, designates the entirety of chapter 53, The Gam , to explain gams: a social meeting of two (or more) Whale ships, generally on a cruising ground; when, after exchanging hails, they exchange visits by boats crews: the two captains remaining, for the time, on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that Ahab immediately asks the captain of the Goney about Moby Dick, without any formal introduction, displays his monomania in full effect. He gets straight to the point and throws introduction out the window, as he cares only about information that will benefit him and his chase for Moby Dick. The Goney s captain is unable to reply to Ahab, but Ahab does not really care about this, as he chooses rather to take advantage of his windward position (258). Although the two ships do not have a proper gam, Melville s story of the gam clearly exploits Ahab s monomania. He has no interest for the Goney because they have nothing practical to offer him with regards to his search for Moby Dick. However, as the two ships pass one another, fish that were swimming along the Pequod leave and swim to the Goney: shoals of small harmless fish, that for some days before had been placidly swimming by our side, darted away with what seemed shuddering fins, and ranged themselves fore and aft with the stranger s flanks (258). According to sailors, an Albatross is a symbol for good luck. Therefore, Melville uses the migration of the fish away from the Pequod to represent a bad omen for the fate of Ahab and his crew. Since the Goney is also named the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Impact Of Communication Technology Computer Programmer How has communications technology affected this career in the past? Communication technologies has affected computer programmers in the past because the first programmers were trying to create a program for calculations to more easily do math. The first programmer was Ada King, moreover she wrote the first algorithm to be carried out by a computer from 1842 1843. The first computer was not electric, but all mechanical. Since then computer programmers have been creating many software s to enhance communications technologies. Around 1889 1896, Herman Hollerith created the tabular and keypunch system to process information and had also created a control panel that could allow the tabular and keypunch system to preform different tasks. He founded the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896, which later became IBM. Communications technologies was vital during World War II. During the war the first digital and programmable computers were used. They were known as Colossus, and their purpose was to decode encrypted messages from the Germans. In 1947, the first bug in computers was reported by Grace Murray Hopper, it was an actual bug as a moth had flow into the Mark Aiken II Relay Calculator. It had to be debugged . By 1949, the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator was created and was known as the first programmable computer with practical storage. • 10. The Extinction Of The Wolf Populations In the past several years news organizations have reported that the wolf populations have been dwindling and researchers are attempting to bring the wolf populations back to what they should be. The population on Royal Isle has been struggling to survive. Many populations are suffering on the island and researchers are struggling to make the population hit a point where they are able to survive without overpopulating or under populating. The wolf population in upper Michigan has now hit a high where people are starting to hunt them to protect wildlife. It used to be a very small population but now it is thriving which will cause adverse consequences. This is also a struggle in Yellowstone National Park. People have a lot of different... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The animals who ate off of the scrapes from wolf kills now have to go to other places to find protein and food (Kluger). Once the scientists thought that the population was getting to low the new pack was introduced. Once the new pack was introduced the other animal populations got more under control. The coyotes were brought back down to a manageable size which helped the other populations come back to normal range. This is a good sign because now the environment can go back to the way it should be and be lush again. Now that the wolf population is back to where it should be, other concerns have come into the topic. The grey wolf is a protected species that cannot be hunted in any way. This is causing problems with the locals. Many farmers feel that they need to protect their livestock by whatever means necessary. With the wolves being protected they cannot shot them like they would back in the older times. The wolf population that was introduced back in 1995 is from Canada though. They are also considered an experimental group because they are being observed. This causes concern to the civilians living near the wolves. The wolves in the experimental group can be shot or killed to protect livestock but the protected group cannot. If the protected group is killed there would be consequences. This leaves a question every time a wolf is shot as to whether or not the wolf is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In one case, a young white woman s grandmother had her placed in a mental institution after the young woman announced her engagement to an African American (Landau 5). When a young black man named Leroy Gardner enrolled in Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1943, he had to sign a formal agreement promising not to socialize with the white females on campus. Social scientists have observed many justifications for black white relationships, such as the need to rebel against parents or society; a passion for the exotic or forbidden fruit, the blacks desire to get even with the dominant culture, or whites desire to atone for past racism (Majete 10). In 1967, Loving v. Virginia cleared all legal barriers to interracial marriagesand relationships. They are usually simple but provide the reader or listener with an image that requires reflection for the individual and the society from which it originates. The African proverb, when an old man dies, it is as if a library has burned down illustrates the importance of wisdom, age, and experience. This proverb highlights the necessity from preserving historical knowledge and the devastation that comes with losing that knowledge. Libraries are symbols of education and information typically containing works of written history whereas the old man who is in juxtaposition with the library has preserved historical information in his memory, the library in his mind. By placing the old man and the library as equals, the African proverbs is stating the importance of human wisdom and the passing of history through the mouths of wise men to youthful ears. This proverb is reminiscent of the importance of oral history in many African cultures, one being the ancient Mali Empire. D.T. Some similarities between Okonowko s village of Ibo and Maine are that both harvestfestivals have music. In the village of Ibo they beat on loud drums and in Maine we have a band playing covers of songs during a harvest festival. Also, in Maine we come together during this celebration and talk to each other and the same goes for the village people. However, as we learn about the many things forbidden inside the harem, Fatima tells us that asking too many questions is one of them. That is only because asking a question such as what is a harem? is not really a question that the adults will volunteer to answer (Mernissi, 39). Like many children do, Fatima and her cousins loved to break rules. Fatima, Samir, and their other cousin, Malika used to occasionally climb onto the forbidden terrace. According to Fatima, Samir and Malika s main purpose to climb onto the highest terrace was to push their investigation of harems further. They would sit there and ponder on the unanswered questions by the adults and find out the truth behind these questions. They would ask each other rather simple questions: Is a harem a house in which a man lives with many wives? Do all married men have harems? Can you have more than one master in a harem? During the nineteenth century, most psychologists viewed the emergence of functionalism as being evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Therefore, the primary difference was in the subject matter of their study; while structuralism attempted to examine and describe regulations concerning psychological practices, functionalism was the trend that was considered to be more teleological challenging, and focused more on the concept of how and why. Although the overarching themes of both novels are similar, the manner in which characters behave with each other, the dependency families have on each other, and the ability of individuals to mitigate conflict is different. Both novels give unique perspectives of immigration, demonstrating how integral relationships are to survival, but also portraying how individual interests can... This is demonstrated as [Jake] landed Ambrosch a blow on the head (83). Jake is able to justify the violence to himself, because the wrongdoing of Ambrosch is amplified by nativism.
