Analysis Of Pygmalion By George Bernard Shaw
An Analysis of the English class system in Pygmalion
Throughout the play, Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw, many of the characters represent different
social class structures. They also resemble how the higher class citizens feel threatened by the lower
class citizens. Protagonist Eliza Doolittle, Henry Higgins, and Mrs. Pearce are prime examples of
characters who portray different roles in the Victorian social structure. This play takes place during the
Victorian period in England where the upper , middle, and lower class were at different stages. This
social system was not meant for lower class to move up and down the hierarchy. If someone was born
poor they would most likely die poor. Especially women in the class system were not able to move up
in the class system without their husbands. Through the book many characters break these traditional
norms, represent the ideas of the class system, and act as a model for the upper class.
Many of the characters represent different social class structures. Eliza would be a threat to the upper
class because her intent is to move from lower to upper class. In the beginning Eliza was just a dirty
flower girl on the street with no money and Higgins says, She is no doubt as clean as she can afford to
be; but compared to the ladies she is very dirty. Her features are no worse than theirs; but their
condition leaves something to be desired; and she needs the services of a dentist (129). Here Eliza is
the lowest of the low. She

The Locomotive Of The Transcontinental Railway
With the completion of the Transcontinental railway in 1869, it connected the Union Pacific and
Central Pacific railways in Promontory, Utah. This connection made travel from east to west much
easier than the horse and stagecoach or covered wagon of days past. With the connection of rail, came
luxury and convenience of travel, as well as the movement of goods out west. Steam engines were a
major part of the Industrial Revolution, and steam locomotives made travel from place to place so
incredibly easy compared to the traditional horse and buggy, but as with everything else, technology
advanced and the steel skinned, steam breathing dinosaurs that carved the way for many across the
country, has met the end of the line with the advent of the diesel engine and electric streetcars
essecently being combined to make diesel electric locomotives most famously made by General
Motors Electro Motive Division.
The steam engine revolutionized the way mechanical work was done. Its invention came in the early
1700s in Spain; it worked but was not very efficient, as many firsts are. In 1781, James Watt patented
a steam engine that became a key part of the Industrial Revolution; one that worked in a continuous
rotative motion that produced torque to do mechanical work. The Industrial Revolution started in 1760
and lasted through the 1840s, during the industrialization of the United States. Once the Watt steam
engine had proved itself, it was time for it to be used in other means than just

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Flow Assurance Management
CHAPTER THREE
FLOW ASSURANCE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
As stated earlier in the introductory part of this work, Flow assurance challenges are indeed a great
concern to the oil and gas industry. Starting from the formation, through processing and sales, flow
assurance management strategies has to be carefully designed in order to prevent having problems
with fluid flow.
Remediation of hydrates or wax in flowlines and pipelines poses greater challenge and loss of money
to the oil industry. This is because, blockage point location is a difficult job itself at first, and if
blockage is far away from an access point, such as riser, it may be difficult to reach it with chemicals
or other remediation tools especially at subsea location (Kaczmarski and Lorimer 2001).
The selection of hydrate mitigation and remediation strategies is based on ... Show more content on

The different technologies are evaluated based on the research description literatures. The issues are as
follows: technical evaluation, environmental, and economical evaluations, and advantages and
disadvantages of the different technologies.
3.2 PREVENTION WITH CHEMICAL INHIBITION TECHNIQUES
Thermodynamic inhibitors are chemical compounds added in high concentrations (10 60wt.%) to alter
the hydrate and wax formation and deposition conditions. This is still the widest method used
worldwide, but its associated costs, environmental concerns and operational complexity have made
researchers look for different approach to the problem (J.E Paez et al 2001). Injection of chemical is
used for pipelines with length ranging from 10 km to 200 km (Gudmundsson 2012 and Ilahi 2006).
Chemical hydrate inhibitors can be grouped into two main categories: The Thermodynamic Hydrate
Inhibitors (THIs) and Low Dosage Hydrate inhibitors (LDHIs) (S. Brustad, K.P. Løken and J.G
Waalmann; 2006).

Why Is America Considered A Masterpiece
When I think of America, I imagine of a masterpiece. When America was first discovered by
Christopher Columbus, it was a blank canvas with native American details on the rim. These details
represent how the Native Americans have affected America. Since then, every triumph, failure, rise,
and fall that America has had, another part was added. And though this painting was once a blank
canvas, it is now a wonderful painting with landmarks from near and wide, full of every color, and
includes everything important to modern America.
Opportunity. The blank canvas itself represents all of the possibilities that America had. And it gave
the settlers the opportunity to add whatever they wanted to the canvas.
Education is an opportunity that most

The Miracle Worker Helen Keller
Helen Keller defied all the odds stacked against her. Annie Sullivan defied all odds of teaching her.
Together they create a story. William Gibson, the author of the play, The Miracle Worker, portrays
through the struggles of each girl that it takes work and discipline not pity and laziness to accomplish
goals. Helen was a blind and deaf six and a half year old prone to tantrums and bad manners when
Annie first met her. Considering that Annie herself had been blind and had had nine surgeries to
correct her eyes readers can see that Annie understands a bit of what Helen is going through and her
need for language. Annie was not exactly qualified to teach Helen yet somehow she was able to open
up Helen`s mind and teach her language and

Whispering Pines Can Improve How Business Is Conducted
Whispering Pines can improve how business is conducted. By assessing the structure, systems, shared
values, style, staff and skills of the company it allows us to assess what is currently being done and
what needs to be done. Strategy The strategy is to assess what is going on with Withering Pines. The
financial information and business model need to be looked at. (Joyner, Frantz Crane, n.d, P.59). The
business tends to be surviving on donations (Joyner, Frantz Crane, n.d, P.59). Structure The hierarchy
of Whispering Pines is a board. This board currently consists of four people although it states that
there needs to be twelve. They also must be members of the society of friends. It is stated that in the
board, there is a director and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The board and manager seam cooperative although it does seem like a challenge to them because they
have been operating like this for some time. Staff There are four board members, one full time
manager and four to six part time employees with one person being at Whispering Pines at a time.
There needs to be eight more board members because they only have four out of the twelve that they
need in the bylaws. None of the board members have a background in business and do not know how
to run Whispering Pines. She did not prepare a detailed list each month showing the date and amounts
of rent payments from each resident. She purchased all the groceries at a local market with a debit
card so the funds were automatically deducted from the Whispering Pines account. Gail reconciled the
checkbook on her own at the end of each month and provided Marge with the totals of the account.
Skills The strongest skills represented within Withering Pines is that they are doing what they can to
keep Whispering Pines running although they are afraid that Whispering Pines may be in serious
trouble. It appears that are losing money with the business model and surviving on donations, but can t

A Brief History of Harriet Jacobs
As a slave and as a runaway, Harriet Jacobs suffered more psychological abuse than physical abuse.
Harriet Jacobs had to withstand massive amounts of pain and psychological torture due to her place in
society as a slave. Jacobs does not leave out the physical aspect of the suffering, however, she focuses
more on the spiritual and emotional aspect of the slavery age. Although Jacobs had a relatively easy
life in comparison to other slaves, she was deprived from basic human rights and necessities,
witnessed human beings resolve to corruption and be treated like animals, and is sexually abused. The
mental scars left behind are very harsh. Harriet Jacobs was deprived from basic human rights and
necessities. Since Jacobs grew up in a society were African Americans were inferior, they were
objectified rather than be treated in a humane matter. Slaves were taken away the idea that they were
human. ...they thought he had spoiled his children, by teaching them to feel that they were human
beings. This was blasphemous doctrine for a slave to teach; y presumptuous in him, and dangerous to
the masters. (Pg. 12). Jacobs describes how slave owners declared slaves who tried and spread the idea
that they were worth something in society, dangerous and immediately took violent action against
them to suppress those thoughts. This was dangerous to the slave owners because they believed that
rebellion might be initiated. Jacobs was psychologically affected by this, because she was

An Analysis of the Use of Nanotechnology in Electrical...
The energy demand all over the world is expected to be 28 terawatts by 2050, which can lead to
increase of energy consumption patterns and greenhouse gas production. (P.Alivisatos et al. 2005) One
of the most significant issues the industrialised world is facing today is the energy challenge, issues
associated with energy production, storage and reducing consumption of energy use. The use of
energy has reason to rise over time due to an increase in the world population and the discovery of
new technologies which require electrical energy. The electrical energy is used everywhere, from
heating homes to manufacturing. The energy resources are divided into two types: alternative and
traditional energy resources. The global energy challenge is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The aim of this paper is to analyse the use of nanotechnology in alternative energy production, storage
and as a means of reducing energy consumption. Roger A.Hinriches and Merlin Kleinbach (2006)
declared (claimed) that every day the earth surface receives thousands of times more energy from the
Sun than it consumed in all other resources . Cleanliness, availability and renewability of solar energy
make it virtually ideal. (Grant E.Gardner, 2008). The use of solar energy for production of electricity
is based on the photoelectric effect. The photoelectric effect is a process, when light strikes certain
metals and, as a result, electrons are emitted from the metal surface. (Hugh D.Young, Roger
A.Freedman 2008). Photovoltaic cells (PV), known as solar cells, are devices which collect radiation
energy in the form of sunlight and convert into electricity. Solar cells are made of semiconducting
materials, especially silicon. Silicon absorbs photons of light which strike the cells. The energy of the
absorbed light transfers to the silicon semiconductor, after that this energy pushes electrons out. This
is why the can flow freely which leads to the emergence of electric current. The electrical energy from
solar cells can then be used directly. However, considerable amount of solar energy on PV cells

Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse-Five Analysis
Tragedies occur all around us every day, yet we only hear of the massacres the media wants us to hear.
For years, wars, famines, and discrimination have torn this world apart, but little has been done
nationally to oppress them. However, many individuals have attempted to expose the cruelness of
these tragedies through their works of art and literature. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is
one such novel. This book explores the devastation of World War II, specifically the bombing of
Dresden, Germany, with witty humor and anti war undertones. The novel follows the personal life of
Billy Pilgrim, a World War II veteran, optometrist, and time traveler. Billy is able to visit any part of
his life that he so chooses, a trick he learned after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slaughterhouse Five, however, is no ordinary novel. Kurt Vonnegut, being his unique self, uses several
creative methods and techniques to tell the story of Billy Pilgrim. One such technique is his
implementation of himself as a minor character into the story. Although Billy is the character that
Vonnegut uses to portray his own experiences at Dresden, he decides to place himself into the story as
a different minor character. This is a creative technique that few, if any, other authors have ever used,
further emphasizing the notion of how exceptional a writer Vonnegut truly was. Another creative
technique he uses within the novel is the fact that he reveals the plot in an unconventional way.
Because Vonnegut makes the decision to allow Billy to time travel, the story follows Billy s time
traveling destinations, resulting in the plot being ultimately revealed out of its standard sequence. The
creativity it must have taken to even think of a technique such as this is unfathomable even today, let
alone forty years ago. Any avid reader craving something new and unique would appreciate the
peculiarities of this book, especially since these creative techniques carry with them deeper, more
powerful

False Positive Drug Test Background
The random test is a drug test conducted upon a computer generated random sampling of Department
employees, administered for the purposes of detecting the presence of drugs, controlled substances
(including anabolic steroids) or their metabolites. (Florida Department of State)
What are employees rights in regard to random drug testing?
If an employee receives a false positive drug test, employee has different rights depending on the
policy of the organization or company and the federal laws that protect the rights of employees.
For instance at the University of Miami, if an individual test positive, the individual s sample will be
re tested using appropriate laboratory procedures to confirm the results. If the positive results are not
confirmed in the second test, the test will be considered negative. (University of Miami Personnel
Policies Procedures Manual)
In the state of Florida, an employer is required to use a certified medical review officer (MRO)
(include name and address, telephone number in your policy). The MRO will be responsible for:
Interpreting the drug test results, Contacting the employee if the drug test is positive. The MRO is
required to contact the donor who has a confirmed positive test result before reporting the results of
the test to the employer. If the donor has a plausible explanation for the test result showing

A Brief Note On The State Of Diabetics Essay
Diabetics in Hidalgo County
Norma Valdez Rosa
South University Online May 23, 2016
DIABETICS IN HIDALGO COUNTY One of the most important health problems in my community
is Diabetes. The combination of an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, the lack of health education
and access to preventative care services all contribute to this growing problem. The prevalence of
diabetes in Mexican Americans living in Hidalgo County for both men and women is 25.9 %, or 1 in
3.8 people, Hidalgo County s rates are double the statewide average of 9.7% for Texas and 9.3 % for
the US. The three top causes of death in adults in Hidalgo County are: cardiac, cancer and diabetes,
according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Because of the potential seriousness of
diabetes and all its associated medical conditions, serious attention needs to be given to its prevention
especially in light of the emerging epidemic of type 2 diabetes in youth (Bastida, Cuellar Villas,
2001).

Diabetes has a big impact on the overall health of the community. An example of MAP IT in action is:

The Character Of Iago In Shakespeare s Othello
The purpose of this case study is to examine Iago, specifically his actions, to diagnose him with
antisocial personality disorder. Iago is an extremely talented manipulator, and reveals this through his
plot against Othello in Shakespeare s tragedy, Othello. According to DSM 5, persons with antisocial
personality disorder exhibit actions that contradict laws, violate the well being of others, and lack
remorse. Additionally, persons with antisocial personality disorder are deceitful, impulsive, irritable,
aggressive, reckless, and irresponsible (American Psychiatric Association). Throughout the play, Iago
continuously exhibits many of these characteristics. Therefore, Iago is being diagnosed with antisocial
personality disorder because he manipulates others to obtain the things he wants and he provokes
actions of violence that disregard other s well being. Iago frequently uses deceitful and manipulative
actions to achieve his personal desires, leading to the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder. In
Shakespeare s Othello, Iago s manipulative personality is displayed in his plot to get Cassio, Othello s
lieutenant, fired. Iago pressures Cassio to have a drink and Cassio gives in, resulting in Cassio
becoming drunk. Iago fooled Montano, the governor of Cyprus, into believing that Iago is an
alcoholic. He tells Montano, Tis evermore prologue to his sleep./He ll watch the prologue a double

Analysis Of Dirtwork In EuripidesThe Bacchae

Dirtwork in Euripides The Bacchae
The Bacchae represent the irrational aspects of religion, and this is neither simply reverent or
irreverent toward religion. The play, The Bacchae can easily be interpreted as a cautionary tale about
the dangers of neglecting worship or as a cautionary tale about the dangers of placing too much trust
in human rationality. If the play s main intent was to describe the dangers of neglecting worship or to
describe the dangers of relying heavily of human rationality, then Bacchae would not be portrayed
negatively. I will argue that these interpretations, while true to some degree, are oversimplifications of
the message that Euripides conveys, and that a stronger interpretation is that the play is commentary
on the human struggle to harmonize our desire to individuate and our desire to unify. The play
describes the conflict between Pentheus need to define boundaries and the Bacchae s desire to
eliminate boundaries. Pentheus and the
Bacchae show what occurs when one desire overpowers the other. The conflict between
Pentheus and the Bacchae is an external representation of the internal conflict between the two needs,
that we observe in characters like Pentheus.
The Bacchae represent an irrational aspect of religion because they are portrayed as victims of
groupthink. The Bacchae do not think for themselves, and reject the idea of thinking for themselves.
This is shown here when the Bacchae chorus sings, A tongue

Queen Elizabeth I Of England
Elizabeth sat in her bedroom in the Buckingham palace brushing her long, curly, red hair which was

my mistake, I should probably refer to her by her formal name. The Elizabeth of this daring story full
of anger and spite is none other than Queen Elizabeth I of England. To tell the full story though, we

The year is 1553, after some long and confusing years of switching between rulers, Queen Mary I,
also known as Bloody Mary, came into power. Mary was the first child of King Henry VIII (Elizabeth
s father if you forgot) but King Henry changed the religion of the country from Catholic to Protestant
just so that he could divorce Mary s mother. After the divorce, Mary was declared illegitimate, same
as Elizabeth. After some rather confusing years in England s history, Mary rose to power and claimed
the throne in 1553 as what the Catholics believed to be the rightful heir of the throne. Here is why she
has the nickname Bloody Mary. She reversed the religion of England from Protestant back to Catholic
and then she burned over 280 religious dissenters at the stake in the Marian persecutions in only a
short 5 year reign. The year is 1558, Elizabeth came into power after her sister, Mary died. But the
rode to keeping the title of queen will not be easy. Elizabeth made the country back into Protestant,
which many resented her for. More than just religion, Elizabeth refused to marry, and soon became
known as the Virgin Queen . This provided another conflict for Elizabeth, many believed a woman
was unfit to rule a country and wanted another ruler. But, her biggest conflict was with her cousin,
Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, who just so happened to be Catholic. Here, let me explain to you why
these two woman are perfect arch enemies. Of course

Essay about Emergency Management During a Tornado
Introduction
A tornado is a naturally occurring phenomenon. The capability a tornado has for destruction can create
a major disaster event requiring a response from local, state and federal agencies. This paper will
examine the May 22, 2011 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri. It will identify and compare the
response from local, state and federal perspective. This paper will also identify specific emergency
management functions that appear executed well and those that may not have been.
The Disaster
May 22, 2011 a supercell thunderstorm spawned the tornado that roared through Joplin at 5:45 PM

It also includes individuals, families and communities, who continue to be the nation s most important
assets as first responders during a disaster (FEMA, 2012). These principles allow for a response the
takes advantage of available resources responding to an event do so in an efficient manner.
In preparation for a disaster, the community in Joplin embraced the Whole Community approach. In
doing so, the community responded in large numbers. While a positive, there were some negative
aspects to this level of response as well. On the positive side, the response of first responders quickly
met the needs of survivors. Medical personnel and emergency medical services quickly established a
field center for triage and treatment for those needing medical assistance after the tornado. Because
FEMA s Whole Community approach asks a community to look beyond what is considered traditional
disaster management models, the City of Joplin used social media to communicate emergency
information to the public and conduct outreach to support long term recovery (FEMA, 2011). Because
of the full commitment to the Whole Community approach, responding to this disaster in a positive
manner was possible. That is not to say there were no negative aspects. In most cases, the Whole
Community approach worked for Joplin. The exceptions to this statement do exist. The largest
negative from the response came from those coming to the aid of those needing assistance in Joplin.

Soldiers At The United States Army
Soldiers Preparation in the U.S. Army Similarly, United States Army has extreme concern with the
specific preparation of Soldiers. Therefore, it has developed a program called Physical Readiness
Training (PRT). The program s goal is to train Soldiers to be ready to work in hard duties and sustain
activity in assignments or in combat roles (FM 7 22, 2012). The PRT has a high concern with Soldiers
health, presenting preparation, recovery, strength and mobility, posture and body mechanics activities.
The PRT has three phases to develop in Soldiers the correct physical condition: the conditioning
phase, the sustaining phase, and the reconditioning phase. First, the initial conditioning phase is
responsible for the practice part in order to develop the movement skills the correct way and prepare
Soldiers for the next phase. The second phase is the sustaining phase. This focus phase is to achieve in
Soldiers a higher level of physical readiness required in specific tasks and maintain the level achieved.
The last phase is the reconditioning phase. During this phase, the intention is to restore the previous
physical fitness levels of Soldiers (FM 7 22, 2012). During PRT phases, there is concern in following
the principles of the PRT, such as precision, progression, and integration, in order to provide all
advantages of the program. Furthermore, the PRT tries to develop the endurance, the strength, and the
mobility, considered fundamental components to the success of the

Paired Arthropods
The universality of body segments with paired appendages in arthropods indicates that at least some
parts of the developmental networks responsible for segmentation and appendage patterning cannot be
changed. Arthropods are developmentally constrained in that these networks must be conserved and in
that the networks for alternative appendage development do not exist. Variations in parts of the
developmental pathways responsible for segmentation and appendage patterning explain the
differences in body plan across the phylum. However, certain portions of the pathway must be
conserved, resulting in body segments with paired appendages in all arthropods. Research on the
developmental pathways that control segmentation in arthropods has shown that gene expression is
more highly conserved across the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, though the pattern of expression of pair rule genes may vary across arthropods, they are
consistently activated during development and play an important role in determining body segments
(Damen, 2007). Compared to genes further upstream in the segmentation pathway, pair rule genes are
highly conserved. The Notch/Delta system is much more divergent among arthropods (Damen, 2007).
Though Notch/Delta signaling plays an important role in Drosophila development, it is not greatly
involved in segmentation in Drosophila or other insects, but is very important in segmentation in
chelicerates (Damen, 2007). Additionally, while gap genes are crucial to determining segmentation in
insects, they play a much less significant role in non insect arthropods like chelicerates and myriapods
(Damen, 2007). Genes involved in appendage patterning in arthropods are also highly conserved. The

The Pros And Cons Of The Equal Protection Clause
The Equal Protection Clause is part of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
The clause provides that no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of
the laws . Two landmark 14th Amendment cases are Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of
Education. However, each case treated the 14th Amendment differently and this caused a different
outcome for each court case. In the Plessy v. Ferguson case, the statute of Louisiana, acts of 1890, c.
111 requires train companies to provide separate but equal usage for colored and white races. Plessy
was a resident in the state of Louisiana which he was of mixed race as he was seven eighths caucasian
and one eighth black. He tried to use the whites only train section and was arrested. Plessy then sued
Louisiana State Supreme Justice, the Hon. John H. Ferguson for violating his 13th Amendment which
prevents slavery and his 14th Amendment which is equal protection under US laws. ( Plessy v.
Ferguson , 1). The Supreme Court, in a 7 1 decision, favored Ferguson. The majority rejected Plessy s
argument about violating his 13th and 14th Amendment rights. Plessy s 14th Amendment argument
was rejected because the Supreme Court states that races could be separate and equal to each other.
This set a precedent stating that separate but equal was lawful and constitutional. Justice Henry Brown
wrote the majority opinion, which rejected Plessy s argument that the Louisiana law conflicted with

College Student Health
For most college students, gaining weight during their first year (and the following years) is a reality.
While it might not be a full fifteen pounds, 23% of students will gain around ten pounds in just their
first semester, and 70% of students will gain at least twelve pounds by the time they graduate
(Gropper, Simmons, Connell, Ulrich; Wengreen Moncur). From a survey I conducted of 50 Mizzou
students, 62% of them gained weight during their first year at college. Eight of them gained less than
five pounds, 17 of them gained 5 to 10 pounds, five gained 10 to 15, and one of them gained 15 to 20
pounds. Out of the eleven students who have completed over two years of college, eight of them

First semester, I was slightly active through intramural volleyball and working out, but this semester
has shown me how truly lazy I can be. The only regular exercise I get is on Mondays and Fridays: a
one and a half mile walk to and from the location I volunteer at. I live less than one hundred from the
rec entrance (a reason I choose my current dorm), but I hardly find myself inside. This is kind of
strange for me, and would be for you too if you knew me in high school. Freshman and sophomore
year, I was a three sport athlete; and during my junior and senior year, I competed in cross fit and
weight lifting competitions. Obviously, I know hoe to workout and stay in shape, but why haven t I in
college? I think one of the biggest reasons for this is not starting off strong. When I first got to
Mizzou, I was going through sorority recruitment and was too emotionally unstable to even think
about working out. After recruitment was over, I told myself that I would work out once I figured out
my schedule and became acclimated on campus. By the time that happened, it was three or four weeks
into the semester. The first time I went to the rec, I was immediately too intimidated to do my normal
work out routines and stayed out of what seemed like the boys only pump room. In addition, I felt
very silly because I did not know where all of the equipment was and how

Treatment Of Women In The Roco Era
Coming after Baroque, Originating as décor in France, being one of the first worldwide forms of art
and spreading to Dresden, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Valencia, and Lisbon was the Rococo era (Bailey 4).
It was popular because of its visual allure ; however, the term Rococo during its time period, the 1699
to the 1770 s, was at first derogatory and used to defame the artistic style (Bailey 4, 18). The term
Rococo comes from the French word rocaille , which can be an ornamental pebble or the unique shell
work found in aristocratic gardens (Bailey 18). Women were a part of this extravagant epoch, but they
had less freedom than men. The restrictions women had to endure during this time period are most

Some women were recognized for their art skills. One of the attractions women artists had... was their
supposed ability to paint women and other feminine themes better than men (Bailey 109). Marie
Louise Élisabeth Vigée Lebrun was an extremely famous painter; she was the chief portraitist of
Queen Marie Antoinette. She also painted portraits for other famous people such as Empress Maria
Theresa of Austria, Czarina Catherine the Great of Russia, Queen Elizabeth of Prussia, and Prince
Regent of England (Bailey 111). Her making of these portraits for these high ranking people shows
how well she was recognized. Anguissola is another female who wanted to be recognized in the
Rococo era. She used her painting skills to demonstrate her social status (Bailey 110). In Sofonisba
Anguissola, a painting, she exhibited her aristocratic status through her rich velvet gown and lace
collar (Bailey 110). She used her skills in her art works to portray her power. In the Eighteenth century
France There were also women professional writers. Even though professional women writers were
vulnerable to bad publicity , writing gave women power (Thomason 12). Most of these women were
women who were restricted by the laws, and had to participate in the restrictive marriage system
(Thomason 1). Eliza Haywood was a professional writer who also wrote about her controversial
opinion on marriage along with other female writers such as Lady Wortley of Montagu, Dorothy
Osborne, and Mary Delany (Thomason 12). The writing format most commonly used in the eighteenth
century was the letter, which could be written in two ways: private and public. When the letters were
read as private documents they protected women s reputations (Thomason 13). Private letters made it
seem like women were complying with the social standards that were in place for them; however,

These limitations of the OS were not a problem for networking operating systems like Juniper s
JUNOS and others that emerged ten to twenty years after Cisco IOS. Cisco s response to the problem
was to develop a newer version of the IOS dubbed IOS XR which boasted memory protection
between processes, pre emptive scheduling, lightweight threads, and the ability to independently
restart failed processes. Cisco IOS XR uses a third party RTOS or real time operating system
microkernel called QNX and big part of the current IOS code was re written to take full advantage of
the features offered by the new kernel. One thing about the microkernel is that it removes for the
kernel all processes that not one hundred percent required to be ran by the kernel, it then runs them

Surrounded By Happiness Rhetorical Analysis
Surrounded By Happiness My exhibit is called Surrounded by Happiness, to show how happiness can
depend on our surroundings. Although happiness can come from a color, location, and doing the
things we love; the one thing that makes happiness almost universal is being surrounded by people
and things who can help bring out the happiness within us. When we are accompanied by someone
who is cheerful and has positive energy, it rubs off and in turn, makes the people surrounding them
happy too. It is simple to find happiness and sometimes the littlest things can bring happiness to us
and often times it is taken for granted in our daily lives. The theme of this exhibit is to show how
people can contribute to daily happiness even when it s just from their attitude, energy, and presence.
Also, to show how it is important to know who and what we surround ourselves with and how they
can affect us. When we are surrounded by people that are positive, cheerful, and fun; it affects
everyone around us. In The Cordoba Fair, there are two women performing an act that is cheerful, full
of energy, and are having fun doing what they love. This makes the audience filled with joy and
everyone is seen with a smile on their face. The shades of blue and red on their clothing add to the
cheerful mood of the painting. This illustrates the theme of happiness by showing how being
surrounded by a group of different people can contribute a

Supporting Prayer in Public Schools Essay
Our Father... Denied For centuries, the debate has existed whether or not to allow prayer in public
schools. Many Americans feel it is not right of the schools to teach religion. With all the diversity
associated with the United States, public schools cannot select one standard religion to practice, due to
the cultural and religious differences in the country. Not only are schools the storm center of
controversy involving religious differences, they are the principal institution charged with transmitting
the identity and mission of the United States from one generation to the next. If we fail in our school

Prayer should be recited only in the privacy of one s own head or home. To allow individual prayer at
one s own choice is legal. To mandate standard prayer is illegal. The good thing about this is one can
choose to pray, or not, to whatever God they choose. Therefore someone praying to Allah, Buddha, or
Satan cannot require a Christian or a Jew to participate. Atheists have the right to choose not to
participate. A teacher or a government official cannot stop someone from praying silently. Public
schools are for all children, regardless of their race, sex, or religion. Schools are supported by all
taxpayers. The U.S. Supreme Court has replaced freedom of religion, guaranteed by the Constitution,
for freedom from religion. To ban school prayer diminishes the religious freedom of students who
would like to pray and forces them to act according to the dictates of a non religious minority. School
prayer would result in many societal benefits. The public school system is tragically disintegrating as
evidenced by the rise in school shootings, increasing drug use, alcoholism, teen pregnancy, and HIV
transmission. School prayer can help combat these issues, would instill a sense of morality and is
desperately needed to protect our children. The issues of prayer in the school system used to be on the
back burner but now it has been moved upstage, front and center. The discussion of a school prayer
amendment is not so much about prayer itself but more about what kind of prayer

The Passions Of The Man
The Passions of the Man We exist in an artificial world created from our passions. Uncontrollable as
they may seem, our natural inclinations and mental faculties have actually effected immense social
change on both a physical and mental level. As oxymoronic as it may seem, it is ultimately our innate
passions that both drive conflict and allow for cooperative endeavor, and Thomas Hobbes s masterful
17th century work Leviathan captures this point beautifully. His passions are a kind of internal motion
related to one s will and encompass character traits, moods, or ephemeral states of being such as
sudden glory causing laughter. Hobbes uses the idea of passions as a motivating source to flush out a
future directed approach to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, we live in the natural world. Far from perfect. Our passions do not even come close to
fitting us in the perfect world. In fact, they prevent its existence. The nature of man then is one of
passions and thusly, one of war. According to Hobbes, the nature of war consisteth not in actual
fighting, but in the known disposition thereto during all the time there is no assurance to the contrary.
(13) War is not a state of fighting, it is a state of being; specifically a state of being in which safety and
protection of one s life or happiness are close to non existent. Coupled with the very real ideas of
exhaustible resources and the will to survive, this war or natural world is then populated by beasts
unreasoned beings dominated by their psyches and unable to coexist in a society. Hobbes concluded
that in the nature of man, we find three principal causes of quarrel. First, competition; secondly,
diffidence; thirdly, glory. () These three passions are at once dangerous to the natural world, but
necessary for the artificial world to exist. The competition to which Hobbes speaks is a competition
for power. In his observations, it is the powerful that are happy and can assure their continued felicity.
Thus, competition begets violence. Diffidence implies the defense of oneself and your well being in
fear of it being stripped of you. Diffidence seems to beget violence as well. And glory begets the most
violence. The thirst for power becomes too

Analysis Of New Zealand Shared Space Design Essay
Introduction
In New Zealand shared spaces are a relatively new concept in relation to the United Kingdom, and
Netherlands. Therefore, case studies from the UK will provide strong insight in providing guidance on
speed reduction principles of shared spaces. The principles discovered throughout these case studies
will assist in developing an assessment criteria that is reliable and effective.
New Road, Brighton, London
New Roads shared space design has had an impressive design impact. Traffic volumes have reduced
by 93%, and vehicle speeds remain below 20km/hr. The road has many physical features that occupy
the street such as benches, restaurant, and café and bar seating, vegetation and pedestrian dominated,

New Road, Brighton use different types of surfaces within the space with many pedestrians citing the
different surfaces as the key factor as the reason for taking ownership of the whole street with vehicles
and cyclists feel the different surfaces make them feel as pedestrians have priority therefore, they
travel with more care.
Ashford Ring Road
Ashford Ring Road shared space design has improved safety significantly. Vehicle speeds remain
around 32km/hr. This road also has many physical features that occupy the street such as benches,

Sexual selection in fish inhabiting great lakes
Sexual selection can best be described by the definition given by Darwin himself. Sexual selection is
the advantage which certain individuals have over other individuals of the same species solely in
respect of reproduction (Hosken et al, 2011). Sexual selection occurs throughout the animal kingdom,
where male frogs dominate through the depth of their croak, and certain peacocks reign superior based
on the colour and intricate detail on their tails. They remain superior to their lesser counterparts as
they bear more admirable characteristics, from which they are chosen by females of the same species.
Intersexual selection describes one sex (commonly females) choosing male partners for copulation.
Females tend to choose the males based on secondary sexual characteristics. Intrasexual selection, on
the other hand, is competition within the same sex, in the hope of gaining access to the other sex for
reproduction (Eberhard, 1996). It is commonly male species competing against each other for female
partners. These two forms of sexual selection results in more developed offspring, as the fitter male
will out compete other males and also is more likely to be chosen be

  • 2. Analysis Of Pygmalion By George Bernard Shaw An Analysis of the English class system in Pygmalion Throughout the play, Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw, many of the characters represent different social class structures. They also resemble how the higher class citizens feel threatened by the lower class citizens. Protagonist Eliza Doolittle, Henry Higgins, and Mrs. Pearce are prime examples of characters who portray different roles in the Victorian social structure. This play takes place during the Victorian period in England where the upper , middle, and lower class were at different stages. This social system was not meant for lower class to move up and down the hierarchy. If someone was born poor they would most likely die poor. Especially women in the class system were not able to move up in the class system without their husbands. Through the book many characters break these traditional norms, represent the ideas of the class system, and act as a model for the upper class. Many of the characters represent different social class structures. Eliza would be a threat to the upper class because her intent is to move from lower to upper class. In the beginning Eliza was just a dirty flower girl on the street with no money and Higgins says, She is no doubt as clean as she can afford to be; but compared to the ladies she is very dirty. Her features are no worse than theirs; but their condition leaves something to be desired; and she needs the services of a dentist (129). Here Eliza is the lowest of the low. She ... • 3. The Locomotive Of The Transcontinental Railway With the completion of the Transcontinental railway in 1869, it connected the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railways in Promontory, Utah. This connection made travel from east to west much easier than the horse and stagecoach or covered wagon of days past. With the connection of rail, came luxury and convenience of travel, as well as the movement of goods out west. Steam engines were a major part of the Industrial Revolution, and steam locomotives made travel from place to place so incredibly easy compared to the traditional horse and buggy, but as with everything else, technology advanced and the steel skinned, steam breathing dinosaurs that carved the way for many across the country, has met the end of the line with the advent of the diesel engine and electric streetcars essecently being combined to make diesel electric locomotives most famously made by General Motors Electro Motive Division. The steam engine revolutionized the way mechanical work was done. Its invention came in the early 1700s in Spain; it worked but was not very efficient, as many firsts are. In 1781, James Watt patented a steam engine that became a key part of the Industrial Revolution; one that worked in a continuous rotative motion that produced torque to do mechanical work. The Industrial Revolution started in 1760 and lasted through the 1840s, during the industrialization of the United States. Once the Watt steam engine had proved itself, it was time for it to be used in other means than just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Flow Assurance Management CHAPTER THREE FLOW ASSURANCE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES As stated earlier in the introductory part of this work, Flow assurance challenges are indeed a great concern to the oil and gas industry. Starting from the formation, through processing and sales, flow assurance management strategies has to be carefully designed in order to prevent having problems with fluid flow. Remediation of hydrates or wax in flowlines and pipelines poses greater challenge and loss of money to the oil industry. This is because, blockage point location is a difficult job itself at first, and if blockage is far away from an access point, such as riser, it may be difficult to reach it with chemicals or other remediation tools especially at subsea location (Kaczmarski and Lorimer 2001). The selection of hydrate mitigation and remediation strategies is based on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The different technologies are evaluated based on the research description literatures. The issues are as follows: technical evaluation, environmental, and economical evaluations, and advantages and disadvantages of the different technologies. 3.2 PREVENTION WITH CHEMICAL INHIBITION TECHNIQUES Thermodynamic inhibitors are chemical compounds added in high concentrations (10 60wt.%) to alter the hydrate and wax formation and deposition conditions. This is still the widest method used worldwide, but its associated costs, environmental concerns and operational complexity have made researchers look for different approach to the problem (J.E Paez et al 2001). Injection of chemical is used for pipelines with length ranging from 10 km to 200 km (Gudmundsson 2012 and Ilahi 2006). Chemical hydrate inhibitors can be grouped into two main categories: The Thermodynamic Hydrate Inhibitors (THIs) and Low Dosage Hydrate inhibitors (LDHIs) (S. Brustad, K.P. Løken and J.G Waalmann; 2006). 3.2.1 Thermodynamic Hydrate Inhibition Technical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Why Is America Considered A Masterpiece When I think of America, I imagine of a masterpiece. When America was first discovered by Christopher Columbus, it was a blank canvas with native American details on the rim. These details represent how the Native Americans have affected America. Since then, every triumph, failure, rise, and fall that America has had, another part was added. And though this painting was once a blank canvas, it is now a wonderful painting with landmarks from near and wide, full of every color, and includes everything important to modern America. Opportunity. The blank canvas itself represents all of the possibilities that America had. And it gave the settlers the opportunity to add whatever they wanted to the canvas. • 6. The Miracle Worker Helen Keller Helen Keller defied all the odds stacked against her. Annie Sullivan defied all odds of teaching her. Together they create a story. William Gibson, the author of the play, The Miracle Worker, portrays through the struggles of each girl that it takes work and discipline not pity and laziness to accomplish goals. Helen was a blind and deaf six and a half year old prone to tantrums and bad manners when Annie first met her. Considering that Annie herself had been blind and had had nine surgeries to correct her eyes readers can see that Annie understands a bit of what Helen is going through and her need for language. • 7. Whispering Pines Can Improve How Business Is Conducted Whispering Pines can improve how business is conducted. By assessing the structure, systems, shared values, style, staff and skills of the company it allows us to assess what is currently being done and what needs to be done. Strategy The strategy is to assess what is going on with Withering Pines. The financial information and business model need to be looked at. (Joyner, Frantz Crane, n.d, P.59). The business tends to be surviving on donations (Joyner, Frantz Crane, n.d, P.59). Structure The hierarchy of Whispering Pines is a board. This board currently consists of four people although it states that there needs to be twelve. They also must be members of the society of friends. It is stated that in the board, there is a director and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The board and manager seam cooperative although it does seem like a challenge to them because they have been operating like this for some time. Staff There are four board members, one full time manager and four to six part time employees with one person being at Whispering Pines at a time. There needs to be eight more board members because they only have four out of the twelve that they need in the bylaws. None of the board members have a background in business and do not know how to run Whispering Pines. She did not prepare a detailed list each month showing the date and amounts of rent payments from each resident. She purchased all the groceries at a local market with a debit card so the funds were automatically deducted from the Whispering Pines account. Gail reconciled the checkbook on her own at the end of each month and provided Marge with the totals of the account. Skills The strongest skills represented within Withering Pines is that they are doing what they can to keep Whispering Pines running although they are afraid that Whispering Pines may be in serious trouble. It appears that are losing money with the business model and surviving on donations, but can t be sure. • 8. A Brief History of Harriet Jacobs As a slave and as a runaway, Harriet Jacobs suffered more psychological abuse than physical abuse. Harriet Jacobs had to withstand massive amounts of pain and psychological torture due to her place in society as a slave. Jacobs does not leave out the physical aspect of the suffering, however, she focuses more on the spiritual and emotional aspect of the slavery age. Although Jacobs had a relatively easy life in comparison to other slaves, she was deprived from basic human rights and necessities, witnessed human beings resolve to corruption and be treated like animals, and is sexually abused. The mental scars left behind are very harsh. Harriet Jacobs was deprived from basic human rights and necessities. Since Jacobs grew up in a society were African Americans were inferior, they were objectified rather than be treated in a humane matter. Slaves were taken away the idea that they were human. ...they thought he had spoiled his children, by teaching them to feel that they were human beings. This was blasphemous doctrine for a slave to teach; y presumptuous in him, and dangerous to the masters. (Pg. 12). Jacobs describes how slave owners declared slaves who tried and spread the idea that they were worth something in society, dangerous and immediately took violent action against them to suppress those thoughts. This was dangerous to the slave owners because they believed that rebellion might be initiated. Jacobs was psychologically affected by this, because she was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The energy demand all over the world is expected to be 28 terawatts by 2050, which can lead to increase of energy consumption patterns and greenhouse gas production. (P.Alivisatos et al. 2005) One of the most significant issues the industrialised world is facing today is the energy challenge, issues associated with energy production, storage and reducing consumption of energy use. The use of energy has reason to rise over time due to an increase in the world population and the discovery of new technologies which require electrical energy. The electrical energy is used everywhere, from heating homes to manufacturing. The energy resources are divided into two types: alternative and traditional energy resources. The global energy challenge is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The aim of this paper is to analyse the use of nanotechnology in alternative energy production, storage and as a means of reducing energy consumption. Roger A.Hinriches and Merlin Kleinbach (2006) declared (claimed) that every day the earth surface receives thousands of times more energy from the Sun than it consumed in all other resources . Cleanliness, availability and renewability of solar energy make it virtually ideal. (Grant E.Gardner, 2008). The use of solar energy for production of electricity is based on the photoelectric effect. The photoelectric effect is a process, when light strikes certain metals and, as a result, electrons are emitted from the metal surface. (Hugh D.Young, Roger A.Freedman 2008). Photovoltaic cells (PV), known as solar cells, are devices which collect radiation energy in the form of sunlight and convert into electricity. Solar cells are made of semiconducting materials, especially silicon. Silicon absorbs photons of light which strike the cells. The energy of the absorbed light transfers to the silicon semiconductor, after that this energy pushes electrons out. This is why the can flow freely which leads to the emergence of electric current. The electrical energy from solar cells can then be used directly. However, considerable amount of solar energy on PV cells ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse-Five Analysis Tragedies occur all around us every day, yet we only hear of the massacres the media wants us to hear. For years, wars, famines, and discrimination have torn this world apart, but little has been done nationally to oppress them. However, many individuals have attempted to expose the cruelness of these tragedies through their works of art and literature. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is one such novel. This book explores the devastation of World War II, specifically the bombing of Dresden, Germany, with witty humor and anti war undertones. The novel follows the personal life of Billy Pilgrim, a World War II veteran, optometrist, and time traveler. Kurt Vonnegut, being his unique self, uses several creative methods and techniques to tell the story of Billy Pilgrim. One such technique is his implementation of himself as a minor character into the story. Although Billy is the character that Vonnegut uses to portray his own experiences at Dresden, he decides to place himself into the story as a different minor character. This is a creative technique that few, if any, other authors have ever used, further emphasizing the notion of how exceptional a writer Vonnegut truly was. Another creative technique he uses within the novel is the fact that he reveals the plot in an unconventional way. Because Vonnegut makes the decision to allow Billy to time travel, the story follows Billy s time traveling destinations, resulting in the plot being ultimately revealed out of its standard sequence. The creativity it must have taken to even think of a technique such as this is unfathomable even today, let alone forty years ago. Any avid reader craving something new and unique would appreciate the peculiarities of this book, especially since these creative techniques carry with them deeper, more powerful ... The combination of an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, the lack of health education and access to preventative care services all contribute to this growing problem. • 13. The Character Of Iago In Shakespeare s Othello The purpose of this case study is to examine Iago, specifically his actions, to diagnose him with antisocial personality disorder. Iago is an extremely talented manipulator, and reveals this through his plot against Othello in Shakespeare s tragedy, Othello. According to DSM 5, persons with antisocial personality disorder exhibit actions that contradict laws, violate the well being of others, and lack remorse. Additionally, persons with antisocial personality disorder are deceitful, impulsive, irritable, aggressive, reckless, and irresponsible (American Psychiatric Association). Throughout the play, Iago continuously exhibits many of these characteristics. Therefore, Iago is being diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder because he manipulates others to obtain the things he wants and he provokes actions of violence that disregard other s well being. Iago frequently uses deceitful and manipulative actions to achieve his personal desires, leading to the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder. In Shakespeare s Othello, Iago s manipulative personality is displayed in his plot to get Cassio, Othello s lieutenant, fired. Iago pressures Cassio to have a drink and Cassio gives in, resulting in Cassio becoming drunk. Iago fooled Montano, the governor of Cyprus, into believing that Iago is an alcoholic. • 14. Analysis Of Dirtwork In EuripidesThe Bacchae 3218 Dirtwork in Euripides The Bacchae The Bacchae represent the irrational aspects of religion, and this is neither simply reverent or irreverent toward religion. The play, The Bacchae can easily be interpreted as a cautionary tale about the dangers of neglecting worship or as a cautionary tale about the dangers of placing too much trust in human rationality. If the play s main intent was to describe the dangers of neglecting worship or to describe the dangers of relying heavily of human rationality, then Bacchae would not be portrayed negatively. I will argue that these interpretations, while true to some degree, are oversimplifications of the message that Euripides conveys, and that a stronger interpretation is that the play is commentary on the human struggle to harmonize our desire to individuate and our desire to unify. The play describes the conflict between Pentheus need to define boundaries and the Bacchae s desire to eliminate boundaries. Pentheus and the Bacchae show what occurs when one desire overpowers the other. The conflict between Pentheus and the Bacchae is an external representation of the internal conflict between the two needs, that we observe in characters like Pentheus. The Bacchae represent an irrational aspect of religion because they are portrayed as victims of groupthink. The Bacchae do not think for themselves, and reject the idea of thinking for themselves. Mary was the first child of King Henry VIII (Elizabeth s father if you forgot) but King Henry changed the religion of the country from Catholic to Protestant just so that he could divorce Mary s mother. After the divorce, Mary was declared illegitimate, same as Elizabeth. After some rather confusing years in England s history, Mary rose to power and claimed the throne in 1553 as what the Catholics believed to be the rightful heir of the throne. Here is why she has the nickname Bloody Mary. She reversed the religion of England from Protestant back to Catholic and then she burned over 280 religious dissenters at the stake in the Marian persecutions in only a short 5 year reign. Ferguson case, the statute of Louisiana, acts of 1890, c. 111 requires train companies to provide separate but equal usage for colored and white races. Plessy was a resident in the state of Louisiana which he was of mixed race as he was seven eighths caucasian and one eighth black. He tried to use the whites only train section and was arrested. Plessy s 14th Amendment argument was rejected because the Supreme Court states that races could be separate and equal to each other. • 29. Surrounded By Happiness Rhetorical Analysis Surrounded By Happiness My exhibit is called Surrounded by Happiness, to show how happiness can depend on our surroundings. Although happiness can come from a color, location, and doing the things we love; the one thing that makes happiness almost universal is being surrounded by people and things who can help bring out the happiness within us. When we are accompanied by someone who is cheerful and has positive energy, it rubs off and in turn, makes the people surrounding them happy too. It is simple to find happiness and sometimes the littlest things can bring happiness to us and often times it is taken for granted in our daily lives. The theme of this exhibit is to show how people can contribute to daily happiness even when it s just from their attitude, energy, and presence. Also, to show how it is important to know who and what we surround ourselves with and how they can affect us. When we are surrounded by people that are positive, cheerful, and fun; it affects everyone around us. In The Cordoba Fair, there are two women performing an act that is cheerful, full of energy, and are having fun doing what they love. This makes the audience filled with joy and everyone is seen with a smile on their face. The shades of blue and red on their clothing add to the cheerful mood of the painting. This illustrates the theme of happiness by showing how being surrounded by a group of different people can contribute a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Supporting Prayer in Public Schools Essay Our Father... Denied For centuries, the debate has existed whether or not to allow prayer in public schools. Many Americans feel it is not right of the schools to teach religion. With all the diversity associated with the United States, public schools cannot select one standard religion to practice, due to the cultural and religious differences in the country. Not only are schools the storm center of controversy involving religious differences, they are the principal institution charged with transmitting the identity and mission of the United States from one generation to the next. If we fail in our school policies and classrooms to model and to teach how to live with differences, we endanger our experiment in religious liberty and our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prayer should be recited only in the privacy of one s own head or home. To allow individual prayer at one s own choice is legal. To mandate standard prayer is illegal. The good thing about this is one can choose to pray, or not, to whatever God they choose. Therefore someone praying to Allah, Buddha, or Satan cannot require a Christian or a Jew to participate. Atheists have the right to choose not to participate. A teacher or a government official cannot stop someone from praying silently. Public schools are for all children, regardless of their race, sex, or religion. Schools are supported by all taxpayers. The U.S. Supreme Court has replaced freedom of religion, guaranteed by the Constitution, for freedom from religion. To ban school prayer diminishes the religious freedom of students who would like to pray and forces them to act according to the dictates of a non religious minority. School prayer would result in many societal benefits. The public school system is tragically disintegrating as evidenced by the rise in school shootings, increasing drug use, alcoholism, teen pregnancy, and HIV transmission. School prayer can help combat these issues, would instill a sense of morality and is desperately needed to protect our children. The issues of prayer in the school system used to be on the back burner but now it has been moved upstage, front and center. The discussion of a school prayer amendment is not so much about prayer itself but more about what kind of prayer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Passions Of The Man The Passions of the Man We exist in an artificial world created from our passions. Uncontrollable as they may seem, our natural inclinations and mental faculties have actually effected immense social change on both a physical and mental level. As oxymoronic as it may seem, it is ultimately our innate passions that both drive conflict and allow for cooperative endeavor, and Thomas Hobbes s masterful 17th century work Leviathan captures this point beautifully. His passions are a kind of internal motion related to one s will and encompass character traits, moods, or ephemeral states of being such as sudden glory causing laughter. Far from perfect. Our passions do not even come close to fitting us in the perfect world. In fact, they prevent its existence. The nature of man then is one of passions and thusly, one of war. According to Hobbes, the nature of war consisteth not in actual fighting, but in the known disposition thereto during all the time there is no assurance to the contrary. (13) War is not a state of fighting, it is a state of being; specifically a state of being in which safety and protection of one s life or happiness are close to non existent. Coupled with the very real ideas of exhaustible resources and the will to survive, this war or natural world is then populated by beasts unreasoned beings dominated by their psyches and unable to coexist in a society. Hobbes concluded that in the nature of man, we find three principal causes of quarrel. First, competition; secondly, diffidence; thirdly, glory. () These three passions are at once dangerous to the natural world, but necessary for the artificial world to exist. The competition to which Hobbes speaks is a competition for power. In his observations, it is the powerful that are happy and can assure their continued felicity. Thus, competition begets violence. Diffidence implies the defense of oneself and your well being in fear of it being stripped of you. Diffidence seems to beget violence as well. And glory begets the most violence. Sexual Selection And Gender Selection Name: Chloe Mulqueen Lecturer: Grace McCormack ID: 14470708 Module: Evolutionary Biology ZO317 Sexual selection in fish inhabiting great lakes Sexual selection can best be described by the definition given by Darwin himself. Sexual selection is the advantage which certain individuals have over other individuals of the same species solely in respect of reproduction (Hosken et al, 2011). Sexual selection occurs throughout the animal kingdom, where male frogs dominate through the depth of their croak, and certain peacocks reign superior based on the colour and intricate detail on their tails. They remain superior to their lesser counterparts as they bear more admirable characteristics, from which they are chosen by females of the same species. Intersexual selection describes one sex (commonly females) choosing male partners for copulation. Females tend to choose the males based on secondary sexual characteristics. Intrasexual selection, on the other hand, is competition within the same sex, in the hope of gaining access to the other sex for reproduction (Eberhard, 1996). It is commonly male species competing against each other for female partners. These two forms of sexual selection results in more developed offspring, as the fitter male will out compete other males and also is more likely to be chosen be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
