The Significance of the Rape Scene in Timothy Findleyā€™s...
The significance of the rape scene in Timothy Findley s The Wars Ryan Moore
Robert Ross, the protagonist of Timothy Findley s novel The Wars undergoes a disturbing violation
when his fellow soldiers rape him; this is a significant turning point for Robert s character and a
section of the book Findley uses to address many themes. Throughout the book we witness Robert
maturing and experiencing many hardships that will help create the man he becomes. The most
significant of these trials is the scene at the insane asylum because it is where Robert looses the last
connection to his innocence and his faith in humanity s virtuousness. Findley also uses this scene to
address the topic of homophobia in that era, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he receives his belongings and sees the photograph of his sister, Robert realizes that he doesn t
her memory to exist in a place that has treated him so harshly and that her innocence does not belong
in this world any longer. Robert decides to burn the picture to free Rowena s memory from the
slightest association with the depravation mankind has sunk to in his eyes, and with it he is destroying
the last link to his innocence.
The rape scene is also very important because of the real life symbolism it represents. Findley uses the
rape scene to acknowledge that the war has raped Robert s generation of men who were affiliated with
it. As Robert is assaulted his thoughts lead to Why? Robert kept thinking. Why? (174). The author
hints at this theme in the following line: . . . four hundred thousand possibilities all of those lives that
would never be (169). Robert s thoughts of why reflect the thoughts of many North American men and
women who had lost love ones during the war. Findley believes that the war, and those who made it,
raped Robert s entire generation of men and left damaged scared victims and grieving relatives in their
wake (gradesaver). Findley cleverly emphasizes the subtle metaphor of four hundred thousand

Essay On Ed s Tall Tales
Humankind fought numerous wars in the twentieth century. In the United States, none affected the
everyday lives of those left at home to the extent that the Second World War did. The government
rationed essential war material, such as rubber, gasoline, and numerous food items. Teens, disabled,
middle aged, and elderly, male and female, kept farms productive and factories turning out munitions
at an unprecedented level. Although people endured hardships, they also found opportunities for
adventure and financial gain. For countless people, the war changed the direction of their lives.1 Their
stories are diverse. Ed s Tall Tales
In the 1960s, during my junior high and high school years, I frequently earned money by working for
our next door neighbors, Ed and Alice Larson. In the winter, I shoveled the snow from their sidewalks
and occasionally, when the snow accumulated from multiple storms, I cleared the snow off their roof.
In the summer, I received seventy five cents each time I mowed their grass. Since Ed provided both
the lawn mower and fuel, I discounted my usual one dollar charge for a lawn of their size.
After moving out of my childhood home, I seldom interacted with Ed and Alice. However, while
visiting my parents in the mid 1970s, Ed and I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Dementia Solutions
By 2050, 135 million of the world s population will suffer from dementia. Dementia is a decline in
brain cells, which mostly appear in the elderly. It affects daily life and routine activities, and makes a
person s life worse. Unfortunately, there is no curable treatment for dementia at present. Technologies
have been invented for helping dementia sufferers to lead an easier life. Since 2000, there have been
various smart technologies (such as reminder clock, movement sensor, environment sensor, etc.).
However, the current technology is not enough and is not affordable. There needs to be alternative
solutions to help patients and to cure the disease. This essay starts by describing the current problem

Summary Of The Negro Artist And The Radical Mountain By...
Langston Hughes has made many accomplishments that most people couldn t make. It was a great
challenge for colored people to express their feelings without going through a lot of trouble. Hughes
was successful in expressing he feelings. Considering the fact that he was half Caucasian and half
African American, he wasn t treated the way he was supposed to. So he wanted to do something about
it and change the course of history. On June 23, 1926, Hughes published a stunning essay called The
Negro Artist and the Radical Mountain. This essay captured the philosophy behind art and radical
problems faced by black artists. In essence, he talks about how a young Negro poet did not want to be
recognized as a Negro poet. Instead, he wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark skinned selves without
fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it doesn t matter. We know we
are beautiful. And ugly too. The tom tom cries and the tom tom laughs. If colored people are pleased
we are glad. If they are not, their displeasure doesn t matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow,
strong as we know how, and we stand on top of the mountain, free within ourselves. Hughes clarifies
how colored people should pay more attention to their own beauty. Hughes sums up the life and
thoughts of young negroes like the young poet he described at the beginning of his essay. Another
great work of art by Langston Hughes was a poem called Harlem Sweeties. He uses the term sugar hill
and different shades of food to illustrate the personality and beauty of the melanated people of
Harlem. Some of these examples include descriptions such as coffee and cream, chocolate, walnut
tinted, coco brown, and many more. In another poem called My People, Langston illustrates how
wonderful his people are. He expresses the beauty of his people by talking about the beautiful night.
Not only does Hughes describe the people of Harlem in his poem, he also demonstrates the struggles
in his life that he had to deal with. Hughes has a white

Branch Immaterial Officer
The position of a branch immaterial officer essentially implies that the officer holding such a position
is not attached to any specified branch of the Army (Zurick, 2010). This position also means that a
commissioned officer may fill that particular position. I really look forward to working as a branch
immaterial officer because this position provides me with an excellent opportunity to explore my
skills and abilities in a wide range of duties and activities. More significantly, this position presents
me with a superb opportunity to gain more knowledge in the different areas that I may have to work. I
feel that working in this position will therefore enable me to become an outstanding officer in my
career because I will be able to work with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One critical advantage that I can easily associate this position with is the ability to equip officers with
a wide range of skills, all of which are necessary to the success of an officer. Secondly, the position of
a branch officer provides the officers with valuable opportunities to interact with officers with
different specializations, which is critical to the development of essential leadership skills and the
accumulation of vital information or knowledge to facilitate leadership later in one s career. In
addition, this position provides officers with an exceptional opportunity to develop essential skills in
communication and teamwork (U.S. Army War College, 2012). One of the disadvantages associated
with this position is the possibility of stagnation in one s career, especially where such an officer does
not develop a positive attitude toward the position, thus failing to recognize valuable opportunities for
career development. Secondly, officer holding this position are likely to consider it to be a waste of
their time, especially when the officers have careers that involve high level of specialization in
technical fields and the officers are unable to identify key development areas to pursue. Thirdly, such
positions could lead in high levels of inefficiency especially in situations where the officers are not
motivated to work in those positions. Despite these disadvantages, I still look forward to holding the
position of a branch immaterial position because I consider the advantages to be significantly
outweighing the

Benjamin Franklin s Use Of The Telegraph
Before the discovery of the telegraph, communication was difficult between long distances. Upon
discovery the telegraph, a machine transmitted messages to and from different places. Once the
telegraph became popular, the telegraph was used for fast communication . There were two men
majorly involved in the creation of the telegraph. The man that created the telegraph created morse
code, which was involved in many other future forms of technology. The technology that evolved
from the telegraph has been used throughout history. The telegraph ideas are used in modern day times
to create new ways of communication connecting the corners of the nation. The phenomenon of
Benjamin Franklin s experiments helped influence the creation of the telegraph. ... Show more content

Operation Urgent Fury Research Paper
November 2nd 1983 marked the official end of combat operations in Grenada. It was on this day that
Admiral Wesley L. McDonald appointed Major General Edward Trobaugh as the Commander of
Combined Forces Grenada. Although combat operations had ceased, there was still a lot of work
required before Operation Urgent Fury would be complete. The 82nd Airborne Division, which
peaked at 6000 Soldiers on November 3rd, would not completely redeploy until the new Grenadian
government was set up and operational. This task took exactly 48 days and the last unit from the 82nd
Airborne Division landed at Fort Bragg on 12 December 1983. During this time, Soldiers from the
82nd Airborne Division were responsible for securing the captured enemy forces prior to returning

estimates turned out to be incorrect, supplemented with Cuban Army the enemy force was much larger
and better equipped than originally thought. After the dust cleared, U.S. forces suffered 19 killed in
action and 116 wounded in action. Enemy casualties included 25 Cuban and 45 Grenadian forces
killed in action, 59 Cuban and 358 Grenadian forces wounded in action, and 638 Cuban Soldiers
captured. Throughout the operation, coordination between joint forces was lacking to say the least.
Each branch of service operated with its own set of communication equipment, which resulted in
ground units not being able to talk to each other. Examples of this are the accidental bombing of a

he was being selfish with, rude to his own son, and his all around negativity.
On page 83, the following dialogue takes place: Mr.Van Daan:(Pushing Peter roughly) Haven t you

This one small quote has many powerful words ,used towards Peter. Shown by the quote above he is
rude towards Peter, Peter was trying to help ,but Mr.Van Daan just yelled at him. Everytime, one
person in the annex made a tiny mistake ,they got yelled at by Mr.Van Daan.
On page 95, the following dialogue takes place: Mr.Van Daan: Just a minute. There s something I d

Father says he s going to sell her fur coat. She s crazy about that old fur coat.
This conversation from the Van Daans is talking about how Mr.Van Daan is going to sell his wife s
favorite coat. This shows how selfish Mr.Van Daan really is. If you would have read a little further , he
says he is selling it because he wants to help the homeless on the streets. It was really ,so Mr.Van Daan

The Positives And Negatives Of Taboo Advertising In The...
The business world, especially the advertising and marketing sections of this expansive, impactful and
interconnected world will always contain controversial issues and taboo ideas. Taboo; known as
something proscribed by society as something improper or unacceptable (Dictionary), is often used in
advertising to help cause a stir on social media to promote a product. Often however, these taboo
advertisements cause large controversies, and result in loss of sales and removal of the inappropriate
endorsements of the product. Therefore, the real question is what are the positives and negatives of
taboo advertising, and if they seem to have more negatives effects than positive ones, why are they
still being used? Taboo advertising has sparked my interest because I plan on having a career in the
advertising and marketing industry therefore, knowing what will be beneficial to the product I am
promoting will help me in the long run. I also feel that it is important to discuss how certain products
are being marketing and may offend certain groups of society. Companies who promote taboo
advertising feel that pushing the envelope will increase sales, while those who are against this form of
marketing feel that they are just creating unwanted issues; I am against this form of promoting a
product because I feel that marketing strategies will succeed better without taboo ideas and will
further benefit the company rather than cause controversy; hurting it and others.

How Did Winston Churchill Shaped Europe
Everything has a history, and Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill played one of the biggest in
Europe s. Born November 30, 1874 in Oxfordshire, England he experienced a tough childhood, but no
doubt did he prosper to do great things for his country. At a time of chaos during World War II,
Winston Churchill brought strategic ideas and courage to defeat one of Europe s greatest, yet worst
leaders, Adolf Hitler. Churchill was a british statesman, army officer, writer, and served as Prime
Minister for the United Kingdom from 1940 1945 and then again from 1951 1955. Winston Churchill
shaped Europe s history and brought them all to victory. As a young child he suffered from a

Churchill did not approve of this and had even proposed that Britain preempt German aggression by
unilaterally occupying Norwegian iron mines and sea ports. Neville did not listen and Germany
invaded and occupied Norway. During May of that year Parliament had a debate concerning Neville
Chamberlain and his capabilities since the Norway crisis. The people of the United Kingdom were
becoming scared, Germany was invading and taking over territory after territory in Europe. Something
had to be done or they would be next just like everyone else. After the debate on what action to take
concerning Chamberlain, King George VI appointed Sir Winston Churchill as Prime Minister and
minister of defense. People were whispering and talking of Winston being back. In ways it seemed to
have brought the people hope for their country s future. At first Churchill did not see the threat of
Adolf Hitler in the 1930 s, but around 1938 when Germany began seizing control of their neighbors he
saw Hitler for who he really was. With the people of Great Britain being concerned and scared for
their country, Churchill knew that they would need to know it would not be

Analysis Of The Article Culture And Society
This week s materials seem to give me a huge hit. They give me headache for sure, but they also
enlighten me. Of the three materials, the one I like the most is the one entitled Culture is ordinary. I
really enjoy reading this article. For me, it is like reading a journal or personal experience. It feels so
intimate, especially the experience shared. Compared to the other pieces, the book Culture and Society
or the article the Analysis of Culture, this particular article offers a different impression. True, the
shortness of the article first grabbed my attention. However, it does not necessarily mean that it does
not provide a poignant information. On the contrary, it gives me a more contextual and personal
information about what culture is. In addition, this article reminds me of my own cultural experience.
The title of the article, Culture is ordinary, somewhat brings me the message that one does not need to
travel far just to find out what culture is because as emphasized by Williams we can easily find out
culture from where they live; from the common thing in life, straight from your own door. For me, the
way Williams begins his discussion by giving the readers the description of his hometown (trip) is apt
to give a sense that culture is ordinary; that culture is not something unreachable or unseen, for it is
here, around us. The introduction also serves to reinforce how ordinary and simple culture is that it is
drawn from the everyday life. The bus route is

How Did Mother Teresa Influence The Missionaries Of Charity
When I think of great people who have helped others worldwide, many people come into my thoughts.
However, one person stands out from the rest for me: Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was a very
influential person who went above her call of duty by helping people and forming the Missionaries of
Charity.
The Catholic Church has helped many people who are in need that would have died if they did not
help. In general, millions of Christians and Catholics all around the world help many people who need
help in many things. Catholic communities worldwide help people almost everywhere, making the
Catholic Church s influence in people s lives very large. The Catholic Church, in general, will always
go outside the normal boundaries to help those in need. Catholic saints, such as St. Francis of Assisi,
St. Vincent de Paul, and most recently, St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, are great examples of this.

therefore allowing them to expand and most importantly, build schools, homes, charity centers, and

Analysis Of The Book Elvira Karlene
Elvira Karlene Edwards Although the small Idaho town where I grew up had a population of barely
eleven hundred people, it wasn t as if we were all alike. My best girlfriend was a Jehovah s Witness, a
boy I dated in high school was a Mormon, and the town undertakers were Seventh Day Adventists.
The prettiest girl in town s father was black, and down the valley some Japanese farmers owned land,
but that was about it, except for the Basque sheepherders who brought their flocks through Long
Valley in springtime, and the original Finn settlers, some of whom generations later still spoke the
language. I never thought much about how insular we were until the Walkers adopted Elvira from
Mexico. The Walkers were friends of my parents and sometimes Mr. Walker worked with Dad on
construction jobs. I remember the summer when I was four, Dad and Mr. Walker built Brown s
Logging Camp back in the hills and our families lived in tents, and my mother washed clothes on a
washboard, and Mrs. Walker taught me to draw trees. I still have the results, a crayon colored
mountain scene that Mother saved in my scrapbook. She also saved the note Mrs. Walker wrote

Asia Minor Research Paper
Asia Minor was known as Anatolia to the people of the ancient world. It was referred to as the land
where the sun rises (Mark), by the Greeks. Throughout history, Asia Minor was occupied by several
great empires and witnessed their rise and fall. It lay near the Mediterranean, Caspian, and Black seas
and was the perfect spot for different groups to build their civilization on and trade with other regions.
With all of the different cultures that invaded, each developed its own mythology. So, Asia Minor
shares an assortment of interesting mythological history with cultures like the Greeks, Hittites, and

Anatolian communities began to develop agriculture in the 8th century B.C. The Anatolians became
big trading partners with the people of Sumer due to their large supply of minerals and precious metals
from the mountains. Later, at around 2000 B.C., the success of these river valleys attracted the Indo
European tribe of the Hittites. The Hittite empire dominated for 450 years, conquered Babylon, and
was even able to fight Egypt to a draw. The accomplishments of the Hittites survived in future
advanced cultures like the use of iron and chariots in war. The Persians, Greeks, and Assyrians were a
few of the peoples that later came to take the place of the Hittites. Around the time the Greeks came to

(2) How can values and corporate identity be communicated to customers and thus contribute to
customer perceived service value? The paper is structured as follows. First, the study presents a
literature review and theoretical framework for describing and understanding values based service
brands. Second, the study presents ļ¬ve narratives describing how IKEA communicates company
values in creating total customer value. The paper then relates its empirical ļ¬ndings to previous
research and suggests a model for values based service brands, values based management, and
corporate image. Finally, the paper discusses the research contribution, managerial implications, and
suggestions for future research. 2. Theoretical framework To attract and retain customers, and thus

values also form part of a favourable customer experience (Cronin, 2003; Sherry, 1998). This view is

Differences Between Film And Othello
Throughout the years the play Othello by William Shakespeare has been adapted both on the screen
and on stage many times. The questions or race and racism that have quite often been a point of
discussion with William Shakespeare s play Othello can be seen through the bard, however some may
argue that Othello s skin colour was purely a plot device. This paper will look at two film that have
been re made since the 1960 s, which provides an analysis of the concept of race and how political
ideas and events of that time have influenced each adaptation. It will be seen that the film version of
Othello directed by Oliver Parker in 1995 compared to the film version directed by Geoff Sax in 2001
present s race with differing degrees.
Oliver Parker ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other critics denied that Parker s version in any way entertained the subject of race. Brode and Rick
Groen, a reviewer for The Globe and Mail Review, thought it was a sexual thriller with overtones of
homosexual attraction.
From a visual perspective, the film is captivating, especially the love scene between Othello and
Desdemona. To say that this is based on the O.J Simpson trial is perplexing. Although Parker does
selectively reduce the dialogue from Shakespeare s play, all that has been selectively captured and
included from the play, is straight out of the play. Although there is no basis between the film and the
O.J Simpson trial the commonality between the true is that they both invite the audience to look and
think about how conscious we are about the issues of race within society. Unlike 400 years ago, in
modern society, it is very much impossible to ignore Iago s character and not determine that he is in
fact a racist. The symbolism used by Parker where Iago delivers his monologue over the chess board,
where the chess pieces have been positioned to show a black king opposing a white queen and knight,
is used to clearly illustrate Iago s manipulative character in trying to make Othello question whether
Desdemona is even attracted to him because of his colour. Instead, Iago pairs both the white queen and
the white knight signifying a more likely choice for Desdemona would be Cassio.
At the beginning of the film,

Asdaā€™s Recruitment Process
ASDA s Recruitment Process 1. Job Creation Strategy Achievements At ASDA we recruit colleagues
on the basis of their attitude and personality rather than qualifications and skills. We then train our
successful candidates to develop their skills. The recruitment process normally starts 20 weeks prior to
a new store opening. The new store s People Service Manager works with the ASDA head office
Resourcing Team to recruit local people. At this point we engage with Jobcentre Plus and set up a
Local Employment Partnership (LEP). Since 2008, we have employed over 6,900 colleagues through

Optimism Critical Thinking Essay
The relationship of optimism with psychological well being is a well researched topic. Maintaining an
optimistic view on life has been shown to reduce depression. The literature on optimism also provides
information on ways to measure optimism and distinguishes between the different theoretical
constructs used to define optimism. Throughout this review, these topics, as well as other important
issues related to optimism will be discussed in great detail. It is hoped that by reading this review, the
reader will become appreciative of the powerful benefits of maintaining a positive outlook on life.
Optimism is defined as the belief that upcoming occurrences will have positive results. Optimism has
been connected to numerous facets of mental health in adults (Lai, 1995; Schweizer, Beck Seyffer,
Schneider, 1999). The study of optimism derives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those that will be covered in this overview consist of quality of life, coping styles, unhappiness, and
faith in a fair world. Prior investigation has established that a perceived quality of life is swayed by an
individual s level of optimism. Other aspects, such as coping styles and social connections have been
positively correlated with a high quality of life. This is a very subjective phrase and has been
demarcated in many ways. One meaning states that quality of life is centered on the personal
assessment of one s possessions and contentment with these possessions (Harju Bolen, 1998).
Harju and Bolen (1998) investigated the influence of optimism on quality of life of university
undergraduates by evaluating three sets of optimists (low, moderate, and high) The subjects, 204
pupils carried out the following measures: the Life Orientation Test Revised (LOT R), the Brief Cope,
which assesses numerous coping methods, and a quality of life assessment created by the scientists

The Aeneid A Kind Of Propaganda, Cicero s Second Philippic
Relying on hostile evidence to recreate Marcus Antonius life from his youth until the Battle of Actium
entrains several issues. This essay will discuss Virgil s Latin epic The Aeneid , a kind of propaganda,
Cicero s Second Philippic a piece written with personal and political intentions in mind, and Plutarch s
Rome in Crisis regarding Antony. One must treat these sources with caution, not least because of the
inherent bias present in their writing. It is necessary to take into account the context, type of source
and how the author has shaped material for their own personal or political gain. Limitations.
Virgil shapes material for his own literary and historical purposes, therefore bias is present. The
Aeneid is in part acknowledges Augustus as being key to the Golden Age after Caesar s assassination
(2).The 19 year old grand nephew/adopted son was Caesar s heir and eventually he defeated Cleo and
Antony at Actium in 31 bc (3). In this Euphoria Virgil took to writing patriotic poems such as The
Aeneid (4). After a century of civil war, Augustus victory promises a return of order, prosperity and
peace to Rome.
Augustus ignored Virgil s instruction to burn The Aeneid after his death in 19 BC. This indicates that
Virgil wrote in favour of his patron, ruler of Rome and is hostile towards Antony due to this (5).
Therefore, Augustus is a bringer of peace , consequently Mark Antony is associated with the violence
of civil war.
Virgil s Aeneid praises Augustus

Working the Crowd and Room Arrangement
Working the Crowd and Room Arrangement Either you work the crowd, or the crowd works you. This
is repeated over and over by Jones. He leads into the video with a section on proximity and working
the crowd. He compared classrooms to a stoplight. Red is the fews feet around you, where the least
amount of issues are bound to creep up, yellow is a few feet beyond that, where the middle ground is
and students may be off task, and the green is the section where off task behavior will start. He
stressed the importance of working the room. He said it is important to be able to go through all three
colors within steps. He drew a diagram on the board of a typical classroom set up found in most any
classroom in the United States. He stressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Praise, Prompt, and Leave: The Verbal Modality In the video Jones re enacts a typical classroom
scene. The assignment is first modeled on the board by the teacher, guidelines are outlined and there is
a brief question and answer period. The teacher then tells the group, OK I am going to have you work
some problems on your own while I walk around and help those of you who are having issues. If you
have a problem or question, please raise your hand. He asked the group, What happens now? Every
hand goes up. He comments that that is usually what happens, everyone wants help, but you can t help
everyone at once, so he demonstrates what happens when you assist students. He then walks over to a
participant in his session and shows what happens when you help a student. What happens with the
session attendees is what happens in most classrooms. It started out with a small amount of talking,
and then the noise level grew and grew. He doesn t address how to handle the talking yet, but
describes the stop and yell most teachers do. Okay everyone stop talking, get to work, raise your hand,
be on task..... He goes one to the one on one helping. He said most students when asked what they

Essay about Hitchcock s Psycho
Hitchcock s Psycho Hitchcock had to make Psycho in a time of very strict censorship in the USA. To
get the film to the maximum audiences without having to change his ideas he showed in the film,
Hitchcock used devious techniques to get past the strict censors. Janet Leigh (the actress playing
Marion) said in an interview that she thought the strict censorship rules made Hitchcock a better
filmmaker, as he had to be more creative. This is a good point as if you have a film were there is a
killer running around killing people with blood and guts everywhere it can get boring after a while
since you re seeing the same thing repeatedly. Whereas if you have to be more creative in the way you
make a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This technique also worked to distract the censors from scenes he wanted to keep but were pushing the
edge of the censorship rules. He was also willing to sacrifice some scenes to keep other more
important ones. For instance he told the censors he was willing to get rid of the embrace between
Marion and Sam in the first scene if he could keep the shower scene. This embrace was unacceptable
as one of the censorship rules were excessive and lustful kissing, lustful embracing, suggestive
gestures and postures are unacceptable. In the end Hitchcock got to keep both because on the day of
the re shoot of the first scene when they were going to get rid of the embrace the censors never
showed up. Hitchcock also used devious tactics like at one point the censors said the shower scene
was unacceptable so he took it back and pretended to edit it. He then resubmitted it and the censors
approved of the scene. The censors also allowed the shower scene to pass in the end, as they couldn t
decide whether there actually was nudity or not. Nudity would ve been unacceptable as one of the
censorship rules clearly states, Explicit nudity is unacceptable. This was another good example of
Hitchcock s techniques as he made it seem like you where seeing nudity when you weren t. This scene
was very difficult and took 70 cameras and 7 days to film the 45 second scene. He would always keep

Business Controlled Assessment At Afro Caribbean Hair Styles
Business Controlled Assessment
For my controlled assessment I have investigated an entrepreneur named, Asaya Marks, who owns a
small multi purpose business called Asaya Hardware and Asaya Beauty Box which changed on July
5th 2014 from Causeway Ā£ Saver. The business is both a hardware store and a beauty salon, the beauty
salon specialising in Afro Caribbean hair styles. For the controlled assessment I will be doing task 3,
which states: Which of the qualities shown by an entrepreneur has most contributed to the success of
their business?
In response to this task I found a mixture of desk and field research; desk research expressing various
opinions of entrepreneurial skills, field research being questionnaires and feedback forms expressing
the entrepreneur, the staff and some customer s views.
From Appendix 1 I have become more aware of the importance of planning within a business it allows
an entrepreneur to decide their desired outcome for the business. Planning with consistency is also
important (Appendix 4) as it leads to a more success and stability for the business; Asaya Marks does
this by using forecasts often when planning which may lead to a more organised method of planning.
Asaya Marks business benefits from planning as she can be more prepared for circumstances such as
an increase in supply and demand in which she could have already planned a way to purchase goods
from a different seller at short notice.
As an entrepreneur Asaya Marks uses planning to

Analysis Of The Novel One Nation By Dr. Ben Carson
I chose to read the novel One Nation by Dr. Ben Carson .It showcases Ben Carson s life and
achievements. It also showcases his political and social views about the government. Dr. Benjamin
Solomon Carson Sr. is a world renowned neurosurgeon. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. He
attended Yale and earned a Bachelor s of Arts degree for Psychology (Benjamin Carson Biography
par.17). He acquired a M.D. from the University of Michigan for neuroscience. Also, he completed his
residency at John Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was employed at John Hopkins
where he worked his way up to being the director of his department. He is known for the separation of
conjoined twins. This took 22 hours and a team of over 70 people. Ben Carson has a wife and three
sons. He met his wife while he is attending Yale (Benjamin Carson Biography par.22). He has been
awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Ford s Theatre Lincoln Medal. A few of the books
that he has written include Think Big, One Nation, America the Beautiful, The Big Picture, and Take
the Risk (Future President Ben Carson Wrote 6 Books. We Read Them So You Don t Have To. Par.1
5) I believe that this book is informative especially since Dr. Ben Carson is running for President. I
felt the book was extremely well written. It is very positive, but it also includes a few negative
attributes.
Chapter two is titled Political Correctness. He starts it off with Proverbs 18:21. Those who love to talk

Importance Of Epic Theatre
Epic theatre is always intended for the actors quite as much as for the spectators. The essential reason
why the didactic play falls into a category of its own is that, through the exceptional austerity of its
apparatus, it facilitates and encourages the interchangeability of actors and audience, audience and
actors. Every spectator can become one of the actors . (Walter Benjamin). What do you discern as the
didactic element of Mother Courage and Her Children and how does it relate to dramatic form/
theatrical techniques?
Is Theatre for Pleasure or Theatre for Instruction?
Epic theatre refers to a form of drama that attracts spectator s mind more than his feelings. The term
was developed and adopted by Bertolt Brecht in Germany in 1920 s. Epic theatre presents a narrative
which turns the observer into spectator. The main aim of epic theatre is to arouse the spectator s
capacity to take action by provoking rational self reflection. Brecht has followed the epic theatre
because he realised that the traditional theatre of his time is inadequate for his purposes. Epic theatre
serves the purpose of social function. Through its narrative, Brecht presents social, political and
economic problems. His main aim is to invoke the audience into analysing the play rather than getting
attached with the characters or the plot. This form was empolyed by Brecht in his play Mother
Courage and Her Children which was performed in 1941. The play consists of twelve scenes that
tackles the thirty year war (1618 1648) between Sweden and Poland. The ... Show more content on

Analysis Of I Was A Puerto Rican, By Esmeralda Santiago
Question 1 Foreshadowing
I push my cart away, toward the apples and pears of my adulthood, their nearly seedless ripeness
predictable and bittersweet. This quote, and entire prologue, are taken from the memoir When I was a
Puerto Rican, by Esmeralda Santiago and they foreshadow that her whole life is changed, just like the
fruit she eats and that are in her life. Santiago life is totally turned around in this memoir and the
prologue shows that. The author weaves foreshadowing into the memoir by showing us how her life
changed dramatically and once she came to the United States everything was different, just like fruit
here in the United States and in Puerto Rico. The author uses the technique of foreshadowing to give
something to look forward to in her story and build suspense and anticipation.
Santiago used foreshadowing to show that her life changed and that it changed a lot. Her life is
foreshadowed that it will change and that she lets her past go. Leaving her past in the past and moving
on with her present and future. Santiago s life was horrible growing up. Her parents did not always get
along, their home was not always safe, clean, and good for her and her family, they were always
moving, etc. After they moved to New York, a couple years later, her life was changed. She was
offered an acting role and then later on went to Harvard with a scholarship. As you can see, she left
her past in the past and went on with her amazing new life. When I was a Puerto

  • 3. The Significance of the Rape Scene in Timothy Findleyā€™s... The significance of the rape scene in Timothy Findley s The Wars Ryan Moore Robert Ross, the protagonist of Timothy Findley s novel The Wars undergoes a disturbing violation when his fellow soldiers rape him; this is a significant turning point for Robert s character and a section of the book Findley uses to address many themes. Throughout the book we witness Robert maturing and experiencing many hardships that will help create the man he becomes. The most significant of these trials is the scene at the insane asylum because it is where Robert looses the last connection to his innocence and his faith in humanity s virtuousness. Findley also uses this scene to address the topic of homophobia in that era, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he receives his belongings and sees the photograph of his sister, Robert realizes that he doesn t her memory to exist in a place that has treated him so harshly and that her innocence does not belong in this world any longer. Robert decides to burn the picture to free Rowena s memory from the slightest association with the depravation mankind has sunk to in his eyes, and with it he is destroying the last link to his innocence. The rape scene is also very important because of the real life symbolism it represents. Findley uses the rape scene to acknowledge that the war has raped Robert s generation of men who were affiliated with it. As Robert is assaulted his thoughts lead to Why? Robert kept thinking. Why? (174). The author hints at this theme in the following line: . . . four hundred thousand possibilities all of those lives that would never be (169). Robert s thoughts of why reflect the thoughts of many North American men and women who had lost love ones during the war. Findley believes that the war, and those who made it, raped Robert s entire generation of men and left damaged scared victims and grieving relatives in their wake (gradesaver). Findley cleverly emphasizes the subtle metaphor of four hundred thousand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay On Ed s Tall Tales Humankind fought numerous wars in the twentieth century. In the United States, none affected the everyday lives of those left at home to the extent that the Second World War did. The government rationed essential war material, such as rubber, gasoline, and numerous food items. Teens, disabled, middle aged, and elderly, male and female, kept farms productive and factories turning out munitions at an unprecedented level. Although people endured hardships, they also found opportunities for adventure and financial gain. For countless people, the war changed the direction of their lives.1 Their stories are diverse. Ed s Tall Tales In the 1960s, during my junior high and high school years, I frequently earned money by working for our next door neighbors, Ed and Alice Larson. In the winter, I shoveled the snow from their sidewalks and occasionally, when the snow accumulated from multiple storms, I cleared the snow off their roof. In the summer, I received seventy five cents each time I mowed their grass. Since Ed provided both the lawn mower and fuel, I discounted my usual one dollar charge for a lawn of their size. After moving out of my childhood home, I seldom interacted with Ed and Alice. However, while visiting my parents in the mid 1970s, Ed and I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 6. Summary Of The Negro Artist And The Radical Mountain By... Langston Hughes has made many accomplishments that most people couldn t make. It was a great challenge for colored people to express their feelings without going through a lot of trouble. Hughes was successful in expressing he feelings. Considering the fact that he was half Caucasian and half African American, he wasn t treated the way he was supposed to. So he wanted to do something about it and change the course of history. On June 23, 1926, Hughes published a stunning essay called The Negro Artist and the Radical Mountain. This essay captured the philosophy behind art and radical problems faced by black artists. We younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it doesn t matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too. The tom tom cries and the tom tom laughs. If colored people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, their displeasure doesn t matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow, strong as we know how, and we stand on top of the mountain, free within ourselves. Hughes clarifies how colored people should pay more attention to their own beauty. Hughes sums up the life and thoughts of young negroes like the young poet he described at the beginning of his essay. Another great work of art by Langston Hughes was a poem called Harlem Sweeties. He uses the term sugar hill and different shades of food to illustrate the personality and beauty of the melanated people of Harlem. Some of these examples include descriptions such as coffee and cream, chocolate, walnut tinted, coco brown, and many more. In another poem called My People, Langston illustrates how wonderful his people are. He expresses the beauty of his people by talking about the beautiful night. Branch Immaterial Officer The position of a branch immaterial officer essentially implies that the officer holding such a position is not attached to any specified branch of the Army (Zurick, 2010). This position also means that a commissioned officer may fill that particular position. I really look forward to working as a branch immaterial officer because this position provides me with an excellent opportunity to explore my skills and abilities in a wide range of duties and activities. One critical advantage that I can easily associate this position with is the ability to equip officers with a wide range of skills, all of which are necessary to the success of an officer. Secondly, the position of a branch officer provides the officers with valuable opportunities to interact with officers with different specializations, which is critical to the development of essential leadership skills and the accumulation of vital information or knowledge to facilitate leadership later in one s career. In addition, this position provides officers with an exceptional opportunity to develop essential skills in communication and teamwork (U.S. Army War College, 2012). One of the disadvantages associated with this position is the possibility of stagnation in one s career, especially where such an officer does not develop a positive attitude toward the position, thus failing to recognize valuable opportunities for career development. Secondly, officer holding this position are likely to consider it to be a waste of their time, especially when the officers have careers that involve high level of specialization in technical fields and the officers are unable to identify key development areas to pursue. Thirdly, such positions could lead in high levels of inefficiency especially in situations where the officers are not motivated to work in those positions. Despite these disadvantages, I still look forward to holding the position of a branch immaterial position because I consider the advantages to be significantly outweighing the ... Although combat operations had ceased, there was still a lot of work required before Operation Urgent Fury would be complete. The 82nd Airborne Division, which peaked at 6000 Soldiers on November 3rd, would not completely redeploy until the new Grenadian government was set up and operational. • 11. The Positives And Negatives Of Taboo Advertising In The... The business world, especially the advertising and marketing sections of this expansive, impactful and interconnected world will always contain controversial issues and taboo ideas. Taboo; known as something proscribed by society as something improper or unacceptable (Dictionary), is often used in advertising to help cause a stir on social media to promote a product. Often however, these taboo advertisements cause large controversies, and result in loss of sales and removal of the inappropriate endorsements of the product. Therefore, the real question is what are the positives and negatives of taboo advertising, and if they seem to have more negatives effects than positive ones, why are they still being used? Taboo advertising has sparked my interest because I plan on having a career in the advertising and marketing industry therefore, knowing what will be beneficial to the product I am promoting will help me in the long run. I also feel that it is important to discuss how certain products are being marketing and may offend certain groups of society. Companies who promote taboo advertising feel that pushing the envelope will increase sales, while those who are against this form of marketing feel that they are just creating unwanted issues; I am against this form of promoting a product because I feel that marketing strategies will succeed better without taboo ideas and will further benefit the company rather than cause controversy; hurting it and others. Born November 30, 1874 in Oxfordshire, England he experienced a tough childhood, but no doubt did he prosper to do great things for his country. At a time of chaos during World War II, Winston Churchill brought strategic ideas and courage to defeat one of Europe s greatest, yet worst leaders, Adolf Hitler. Churchill was a british statesman, army officer, writer, and served as Prime Minister for the United Kingdom from 1940 1945 and then again from 1951 1955. • 13. Analysis Of The Article Culture And Society This week s materials seem to give me a huge hit. They give me headache for sure, but they also enlighten me. Of the three materials, the one I like the most is the one entitled Culture is ordinary. I really enjoy reading this article. For me, it is like reading a journal or personal experience. It feels so intimate, especially the experience shared. Compared to the other pieces, the book Culture and Society or the article the Analysis of Culture, this particular article offers a different impression. True, the shortness of the article first grabbed my attention. However, it does not necessarily mean that it does not provide a poignant information. On the contrary, it gives me a more contextual and personal information about what culture is. In addition, this article reminds me of my own cultural experience. The title of the article, Culture is ordinary, somewhat brings me the message that one does not need to travel far just to find out what culture is because as emphasized by Williams we can easily find out culture from where they live; from the common thing in life, straight from your own door. For me, the way Williams begins his discussion by giving the readers the description of his hometown (trip) is apt to give a sense that culture is ordinary; that culture is not something unreachable or unseen, for it is here, around us. The introduction also serves to reinforce how ordinary and simple culture is that it is drawn from the everyday life. The bus route is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. How Did Mother Teresa Influence The Missionaries Of Charity When I think of great people who have helped others worldwide, many people come into my thoughts. However, one person stands out from the rest for me: Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was a very influential person who went above her call of duty by helping people and forming the Missionaries of Charity. The Catholic Church has helped many people who are in need that would have died if they did not help. In general, millions of Christians and Catholics all around the world help many people who need help in many things. Catholic communities worldwide help people almost everywhere, making the Catholic Church s influence in people s lives very large. The Catholic Church, in general, will always go outside the normal boundaries to help those in need. My best girlfriend was a Jehovah s Witness, a boy I dated in high school was a Mormon, and the town undertakers were Seventh Day Adventists. The prettiest girl in town s father was black, and down the valley some Japanese farmers owned land, but that was about it, except for the Basque sheepherders who brought their flocks through Long Valley in springtime, and the original Finn settlers, some of whom generations later still spoke the language. I never thought much about how insular we were until the Walkers adopted Elvira from Mexico. The Walkers were friends of my parents and sometimes Mr. Walker worked with Dad on construction jobs. I remember the summer when I was four, Dad and Mr. Walker built Brown s Logging Camp back in the hills and our families lived in tents, and my mother washed clothes on a washboard, and Mrs. Walker taught me to draw trees. I still have the results, a crayon colored mountain scene that Mother saved in my scrapbook. She also saved the note Mrs. Walker wrote thanking her for sharing me, and describing a picnic we had eaten on a blanket during one of my visits to their home in McCall. The Hittite empire dominated for 450 years, conquered Babylon, and was even able to fight Egypt to a draw. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other critics denied that Parker s version in any way entertained the subject of race. Brode and Rick Groen, a reviewer for The Globe and Mail Review, thought it was a sexual thriller with overtones of homosexual attraction. From a visual perspective, the film is captivating, especially the love scene between Othello and Desdemona. To say that this is based on the O.J Simpson trial is perplexing. Although Parker does selectively reduce the dialogue from Shakespeare s play, all that has been selectively captured and included from the play, is straight out of the play. Although there is no basis between the film and the O.J Simpson trial the commonality between the true is that they both invite the audience to look and think about how conscious we are about the issues of race within society. Unlike 400 years ago, in modern society, it is very much impossible to ignore Iago s character and not determine that he is in fact a racist. The symbolism used by Parker where Iago delivers his monologue over the chess board, where the chess pieces have been positioned to show a black king opposing a white queen and knight, is used to clearly illustrate Iago s manipulative character in trying to make Othello question whether Desdemona is even attracted to him because of his colour. Instead, Iago pairs both the white queen and the white knight signifying a more likely choice for Desdemona would be Cassio. At the beginning of the film, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This essay will discuss Virgil s Latin epic The Aeneid , a kind of propaganda, Cicero s Second Philippic a piece written with personal and political intentions in mind, and Plutarch s Rome in Crisis regarding Antony. One must treat these sources with caution, not least because of the inherent bias present in their writing. It is necessary to take into account the context, type of source and how the author has shaped material for their own personal or political gain. Limitations. Virgil shapes material for his own literary and historical purposes, therefore bias is present. To get the film to the maximum audiences without having to change his ideas he showed in the film, Hitchcock used devious techniques to get past the strict censors. Janet Leigh (the actress playing Marion) said in an interview that she thought the strict censorship rules made Hitchcock a better filmmaker, as he had to be more creative. He was also willing to sacrifice some scenes to keep other more important ones. This embrace was unacceptable as one of the censorship rules were excessive and lustful kissing, lustful embracing, suggestive gestures and postures are unacceptable. In the end Hitchcock got to keep both because on the day of the re shoot of the first scene when they were going to get rid of the embrace the censors never showed up. Hitchcock also used devious tactics like at one point the censors said the shower scene was unacceptable so he took it back and pretended to edit it. He then resubmitted it and the censors approved of the scene. The censors also allowed the shower scene to pass in the end, as they couldn t decide whether there actually was nudity or not. The essential reason why the didactic play falls into a category of its own is that, through the exceptional austerity of its apparatus, it facilitates and encourages the interchangeability of actors and audience, audience and actors. Every spectator can become one of the actors . (Walter Benjamin). What do you discern as the didactic element of Mother Courage and Her Children and how does it relate to dramatic form/ theatrical techniques? Is Theatre for Pleasure or Theatre for Instruction? Epic theatre refers to a form of drama that attracts spectator s mind more than his feelings. The term was developed and adopted by Bertolt Brecht in Germany in 1920 s. Epic theatre presents a narrative which turns the observer into spectator. The main aim of epic theatre is to arouse the spectator s capacity to take action by provoking rational self reflection. Brecht has followed the epic theatre because he realised that the traditional theatre of his time is inadequate for his purposes. Epic theatre serves the purpose of social function. Through its narrative, Brecht presents social, political and economic problems. His main aim is to invoke the audience into analysing the play rather than getting attached with the characters or the plot. Analysis Of I Was A Puerto Rican, By Esmeralda Santiago Question 1 Foreshadowing I push my cart away, toward the apples and pears of my adulthood, their nearly seedless ripeness predictable and bittersweet. This quote, and entire prologue, are taken from the memoir When I was a Puerto Rican, by Esmeralda Santiago and they foreshadow that her whole life is changed, just like the fruit she eats and that are in her life. Santiago life is totally turned around in this memoir and the prologue shows that. The author weaves foreshadowing into the memoir by showing us how her life changed dramatically and once she came to the United States everything was different, just like fruit here in the United States and in Puerto Rico. The author uses the technique of foreshadowing to give something to look forward to in her story and build suspense and anticipation. Santiago used foreshadowing to show that her life changed and that it changed a lot. Her life is foreshadowed that it will change and that she lets her past go. Leaving her past in the past and moving on with her present and future. Santiago s life was horrible growing up. Her parents did not always get along, their home was not always safe, clean, and good for her and her family, they were always moving, etc. After they moved to New York, a couple years later, her life was changed.
