MBM is a scientific approach to management that integrates theory and practice, and provides a
framework for dealing with the ongoing challenges of growth and change (KOCH, 2007).
Five Dimensions
The theory of MBM is rooted in the Science of Human Action and is defined by five dimensions:
(figure 1) (GP, 2014).
Until now I have never heard of or read about Market Based Management. I m privileged to know
someone who worked at Georgia Pacific where the employees were required to take courses. They
used guiding principles for reviews and evaluations. By using these dimensions along with the
guiding principles we presume and organization will be successful both internal and external. This
has been proved successful for Koch Industries, however there are still arguments that it doesn t
apply to all business sectors. For example: Let s take the dimension Incentives. An employee
performing the day to day activities improves a process and the accomplishments of time saving
or elimination. Based on the MBM Incentive, this should be rewarded. This will be
acknowledged by direct reports but then taken up the chain command, only to find out that it s
not relevant at that level. How does this employee get rewarded based on the guidelines? Also, a
salary increase would be an incentive for the employee to perform good work. In the MBM
culture, salary is based on the market for the area the employee works in. A

Essay on William Shakespeare s 18th and 55th Sonnets
William Shakespeare s 18th and 55th Sonnets
Both William Shakespeare s 18th and 55th sonnet s are full and complete examples of poetry at its
best, and, while studying Shakespeare s form is very important, it is equally so to look at the
content and even further deep to its true meanings. His techniques which have immortalized him
over several centuries are displayed at their best while still capturing his goal of honoring his lover.
Although the two poems were written separately, the shared theme is evident and they almost seem
to flow together. In the 18th sonnet, Shakespeare begins by comparing his lover to a summer s day,
which may be seen as a high compliment. Upon reading further, you find that not even the sun and

Through the previous lines, he expressed the link of future lovers to the life of his own. He speaks
of broken marble, neglected tombs, war, fire, and the greatest challenge, time, but, through it all, his
love will live on in the eyes of the future.
In his elaborate comparisons, Shakespeare uses extensive imagery along with personification and
analogies from the very beginning of the 18th sonnet where he characterizes the admired one as a
summer s day. His descriptions of besmeared tombs and the fiery wars described in the 55th pull
the reader in and force a vision of impending doom, only to be brought back out to a more serene
feel by the ending lines describing eternal life and love. Things not usually mobile are brought to
life by his personification, such as the sun and his golden complexion in the ever famous 18th
sonnet. Even more moving is the characterization of death, made human and able to do such
things as brag and consume one in his looming shade. The wind is given the power to blow itself
and shake the darling buds of May while in the 55th Shakespeare declares mortal men unable to
outlive this powerful rhyme, making it nearly god like.
The mysterious lover discussed so often in his works brings them the writing to life and fills us
with questions as to who this powerful figure in William Shakespeare s life could have been. One

Virtue In Hamlet
This quote, in the literal sense, begs for one to be true to one s self, as someone who is not true to
himself is false. This sentiment expressed by Polonius becomes seemingly incongruous with the
events and judgments made throughout the play, as the theme of deceit reigns over that of virtue.
While the play progresses, the characters demonstrate a growing struggle for virtueand lose the
power to be true to their own selves, thus compromising their abilities to uphold justice. As
actualities regarding King Hamlets death become apparent, either truthfulness and virtue, or the
ability to maintain justice is compromised. This concept is especially present in considering
Hamlet s pursuit of revenge for his father s death. His erratic and ineffective... Show more content

Throughout the play, granted his pensive and emotional nature, Hamlet does eventually evolve
due to much moral and virtuous growth, and while he never reaches the standards of a prince
qualified to oversee a nation, he does outgrow the role of the politically subordinate fawner.
Internal growth occurred when Hamlet finally learned to differentiate between his true self in
relation to his perception of self. His initial fits of madness and antic dispositions made this
differentiation vaguer, as these episodes had called into question his mental stability. When
presented on a public platform, Hamlet s stability seemed to be deteriorating; however, in
reviewing his introspective side, its clear that he feels great pain due to his father s death, as
demonstrated by his constant contemplation surrounding how he can best handle the situation. It is
when Hamlet discovers his sense of self that he develops a sense of virtue that begins to allow him
to exhibit both characteristics of integrity and justice; however, it is not until the accidental murder
of his mother that Hamlet develops the motivation of social justice in conjunction with virtue. This
being said, the struggle for a balance of justice and virtue does not occur until Hamlet feels that he
has contributed to upholding social justice by convicting those responsible for their crimes. This
notion of imbalance is especially present in Hamlet s plan to get revenge for his father s

Emotionality In A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner
A Rose for Emily is a short story in which William Faulkner, the author uses manipulation of time
and the perspective of the townspeople to present the life of a seemingly psychotic titular
character, Emily Grierson. Emily, throughout her life, faces the hardships of loneliness and
disconnection in life through the deaths of her loved ones and the coming of a transforming
society. When Emily s father dies, she loses the only person that was ever associated with her,
until she finally finds love for the first time in Homer Barron. However, Emily is crushed when
she realizes Homer is not looking to get together and kills him to preserve the only person she
found love in. Although Emily might be considered evil and psychopathic on the basis of her
actions alone, knowing her father s aggression, her loneliness, and the townspeople s
responsiveness towards her can lead one to react more sympathetically towards Emily. To
contextualize Emily s behavior, as a young lady, she was held back and restricted from engaging
in many activities and was symbolically shown to be in an abusive household. Through the
townspeople s description of the titular character and her father, it is evident that Emily grew
up with a father who was very aggressive and completely unlike her, which forms the reader to
feel sympathetically towards her, because she had never experienced the love from a family
anyone needs to grow and mature. The Townspeople long thought of them as a tableau (Faulkner
3), or a spectacle, and saw Emily as an innocent person hindered in the family. Emily is also
detailed as a slender figure in white (Faulkner 3), which expresses her purity compared to her
father who was a silhouette (Faulkner 3), or a dark figure visible dominantly over the light
figure of Emily. The abusiveness and dominance of Mr. Grierson is shown as he has his back to
her and clutching a horsewhip (Faulkner 3). Emily was fairly different from most southern belle
women at the time, as she was single until age 30 mainly because of all the young men her father
had driven away (Faulkner 3). As a human being, deaths are some of the most, if not the most,
damaging to one s mental state, and it s clear to feel sympathetic towards Emily and

Antecedent Intervention Strategies Analysis
The two strategies identified are effective strategies. Education has always acknowledged and
recognized the connection between an individual s behavior and their surrounding environment.
Antecedent intervention strategies aim at introducing modifications so that incidents occurring
before the problem occurs are either removed or altered in some way such that they no longer
prompt the problems and can even extend to increasing the likelihoods of the desired behavior
(Kern Clemens, 2007). This strategy has several layers, as at the universal level it can focus on
organizing the environment to avert problems and increase motivation. This then creates a safe
environment but also creates a conducive environment which supports learning. This strategy tends
to have an instant... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also targets specific skills, which means when the teacher is clearly aware of the targeted
behaviour and the objectives of the strategy, which makes it easier for teachers to assess and adapt
the strategy. The other advantage is that the child does experience confusion in understanding the
aim of the lesson and the behaviour that is expected of them. DI not only teaches the child new
skills but also provides the child with several opportunities to review and practice these skills in
different settings. Mitchell (2014) says the plasticity of the developing brain allows children to
learn new things when the child reviews and practices these newly learnt skills and over a period of
time gain confidence in using it. The brain makes new connections to the surviving structure and
strengthens the connections. This is especially important as children in their early years are in their
prime to learn specific emotional skills, which will impact their behavioural skills. Having positive
experiences and opportunities to practice these skills strengthens the experience and enhances the

The Symbolism In The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allen Poe
Edgar Allen Poe is known for the various literary devices he uses in his works. One of the most
famous devices he uses is symbolism. In many of his stories, including The Masque of the Red
Death, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell Tale Heart, and The Cask of Amontillado, Poe
uses symbolism to further develop each story by the messages he writes between the lines.
Symbolism is an important aspect of Poe s many works, seeing as how it allows the readers to
make connections within the stories. In The Cask of Amontillado, Poe represents symbolism through
the title of the short story, the outfit Fortunato wears, and the Montresor family motto and coat of
arms. Many would not look to a title of a piece of literature for symbolism. In The Cask of
Amontillado, Poe uses the key word cask as a huge symbol. The word cask refers to, a sturdy
cylindrical container for storing liquids, such as Amontillado, a fine wine, in this case (Lorcher).
Montresor introduces the topic of the wine to his former friend Fortunato by saying, My dear
Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to day. But I have
received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts (Poe). Fortunato is
extremely intoxicated from carnival festivities prior to his conversation with Montresor, so it is
probable that his decision to go into the catacombs with Montresor is not for the benefit of
anyone but himself. He sees this journey with Montresor as a way to acquire one of two
possible outcomes free wine or a chance to further humiliate Montresor, especially after
Montresor suggests that Fortunato is not capable of distinguishing the Amontillado and mentions
the name of a rival, Luchresi (Lorcher). The symbolism in the key word of cask is that it has the
same root as the word casket. Poe s use of symbolism in this regard is often overlooked and
written off as mere coincidence, yet that is far from the truth. Fortunato s love of wine, and the
ignorant and easily influenced state the wine puts him in, leads him to make some of his most
destructive decisions to not only others, but also to himself. The Amontillado is a symbol of
Fortunato s downfall, or in other words, the love he has for the cask

Chinese Religions And The Western World
Until very recently, the Chinese religions have remained fairly unknown to the Western world.
Unlike the religions that have stemmed from the Middle East or the Indian subcontinent, East Asian
philosophies have never had a strong concept of missionary spirit. Therefore, their expanse
remained confined to the East Asian nations of China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan and Mongolia.
However, in the last hundred years or so, an increase in political, commercial, and cultural contacts
of the East Asian region with other parts of the world broke this trend. This helped to spread the
philosophies of East Asian sages all around the globe. Scriptures and traditions of Confucianism,
Buddhism, and Taoism spread beyond the East Asian region and reached areas far and beyond, thus
spreading their concept of harmony, and love for the beauty of nature. Today, a considerable
amount of East Asian populations live throughout Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas and
continue to influence the people and culture of these regions (Hopfe, 170.) Therefore, to
acknowledge the impact of the aforementioned East Asian philosophies on American culture, this
essay discusses three significant elements of the American lifestyle healthcare, cuisine, and art.
Traditional Chinese Medicine, based on Chinese traditions of more than 2,000 years, comprises of
various medicinal practices such as acupuncture, herbal medicines, massage (Tui Na), and exercise
(qigong). Unlike other branches of medicine, the ideology

Life, School And College Life From High School
College life is very different from High School. Longer classes in some cases longer break
periods, and trying to balance your life at work, school, and home can be very overwhelming for
most students, making it very important to have a schedule and daily planner to better balance life
at school and home.
Creating a schedule and managing my time for myself has been both surprisingly easy and
difficult. My mornings from Monday to Thursday are the same for me as it was in High School. I
would wake up at 6:20 am, get dressed, eat breakfast, walk to the bus stop, wait, ride the bus to my
High School, enter my school, and wait until 8:00 am for class to start. Now instead of walking to
the bus stop, my mom gives me a ride to my uncle s house because he works near Pierce College
and I ride with him to school. He drops me off around 7:40 am and I wait until English 101 begins.
Afterwards, once English 101 at 9:30 am I have a half hour break to eat lunch until Counseling 40
begins. Finally, at 11:30 am Counseling 40 ends I wait in the library till 12:00 pm and walk to the
Orange Line bus stop. And I ride the bus and can be home by 1:30 pm. Afterwards, I would relax
for an hour before I would work an essay or read a chapter for an hour, then I would watch TV till
7:00 pm for dinner. My Friday s and weekends are usually free days for me, I only occasionally
have to do chores, study, homework, or stay at Grandma s on Saturday night. Leaving Sunday as
being more or less a lazy day for

The gains and losses of Gallipoli
Assess the gains and losses of Gallipoli
Gallipoli gave Australia its identity as nation and built what our nation is today. Gallipoli was
one major fundamental factor in our culture. When you look back into the history of Australia at
war you ll hear Anzacs and diggers a lot. These names all came from one war and in fact one
battle. Anzac stands for the Australian New Zealand army corps. The term diggers comes from
soldiers continually digging trenches, holes and bunkers to sleep in and take cover during an
artillery duel. The term has remained with us for over 90 years. Our soldiers are still living in holes.
The landing at Anzac cove, Gallipoli, is a significant part in the history of our identity in the war

There were eight Victoria crosses handed out to Australian soldiers during the Gallipoli campaign.
One of the most famous VC award winners was Lance Corporal Albert Jacka. On the 19 May, the
Turkish launched an a attack to push the Australians into the sea. They seized ten metres of
trench at a place called Courtney s Post, but Australians at either end stopped them from
continuing to advance. At the northern end Jacka, with several of his mates, tried to get rid the
Turkish at the post, but were beaten back. It was then decided that while a feint attack was made
from the one end, Jacka would attack from behind. Jacka s mates waited long enough for Jacka
to circle in behind and then threw two bombs and gave covering fire. Jacka leapt over the
parapet, shot five Turkish soldiers with his rifle, bayonetted two others and forced the rest to
flee the captured trench. Members of Jacka s battalion, 14th Battalion, believed he should of
won more VC s in France to. Another example of Australian courage was the charge of the 8th
and 10th Light Horse regiments at The Nek. The point of this attack was to support an attack that
was been made by New Zealand soldiers at Baby 700. The attack was to be at 0430 hours, or 4:30
am. The attack would start with an artillery bombardment at 4:20 am, but the bombardment stopped
5 minutes to early. The officers following their orders kept the men back until 4:30. When the time

Negligence Of Negligence Falls Under Tort Law
.0 Introduction Negligence is the failure to exercise due care or diligence that a reasonable or
prudent man would exercise in similar circumstances. The law of negligence falls under tort law
where it involves harm that is caused by carelessness and not intentional harm (Katter, 2002). A
tort is a civil wrong that is in the form of a breach of duty, which amounts to legal remedy that is
awarded in damages. Tort lawrests upon two principles that state that an act or omission by the
defendant interferes with the rights of the plaintiff, which in turn causes damages (Trindade,
2007). Secondly, the interference caused by the defendant gives rise to a cause of action for
damages that are as near as possible to the plaintiff s loss. Therefore, negligencecan be defined as
doing something that a reasonable man would not have done in similar circumstances or failure to
do what a reasonable man would have done which amounts to infliction of harm.
2.0 Background The main idea of the law of negligence is to ensure that people exercise
reasonable care when they act by measuring the potential harm that may foreseeably cause harm to
other people. Negligence is the principal trigger for liability to ascend in matters that deal with the
loss of property of personal injury. Therefore, a person cannot be liable for something unless they
have been found negligent or have contributed to the loss of property or injury to the plaintiff
(Stuhmcke, 2005). There is more to

Bridging Trial Case Study
The BRIDGE trial, conducted by Douketis and associates,1 was a randomized, multicenter, double
blind, placebo controlled trial that questioned the need for anticoagulation bridging in patients with
atrial fibrillation, who are undergoing an invasive procedure that requires interruption of warfarin
therapy. The primary efficacy outcome was arterial thromboembolism, which includes stroke,
transient ischemic attack, and systemic embolism, whereas the secondary efficacy outcomes were
acute myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and death. The primary
and secondary safety outcomes were major and minor bleeding, respectively. Patients eligible for
this trial must have been 18 years or older, had chronic atrial fibrillationor flutter, been on warfarin
therapy for at least 3 months, had an international normalized ratio (INR) of 2.0 to 3.0, were
undergoing an elective invasive procedure that required discontinuation of warfarin therapy, and
had at least one CHAD2 stroke risk... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The analysis also demonstrated no significant difference between the groups when it came to the
secondary outcomes: acute myocardial infarction (p=0.1), deep vein thrombosis (p=0.25),
pulmonary embolism (p=0.25), and death (p=0.88). However, the bridging group had a
significantly higher risk of major (p=0.005) and minor ( 0.001) bleeding than the placebo group.
Overall, the authors concluded that, in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing invasive
procedures, forgoing bridging was noninferior to bridging with a low molecular weight heparin for
atrial thromboembolism prophylaxis and that there was a clinical benefit in forgoing bridging due
to the lower risk of major and minor

The Biodiversity Of Fiji And Coral Reefs
Fiji is an Island Nation in the South Pacific Ocean at one corner of the Coral Triangle, which is
home to the most marine biodiversity on Earth. Fiji s spectacular coral reefs are world renowned
for their vibrant colors. While many other coral reef sites globally have degraded, the reefs of Fiji
seem to remain vibrant and diverse, making them a high priority for marine conservation in the
Pacific Ocean. Fiji is home to many wetland ecosystems on the mainland that flows into the coastal
mangrove wetlands and coralreefs. The land and sea ecosystems relationship are dependent on all
the inhabitants of the Fiji Islands conservation efforts. Some recent research contends that
community and government partnerships have the potential to support a healthy, sustainable
environment, while reaping the benefits of protecting biodiversity of species in the Fiji wetlands
with noted evidence in Fiji s coral reefs. The biodiversity of Fiji s Mangroves and coral reefs are
greatly affected by the decisions that Fijians decide. The importance of the already highly valued
mangrove wetland function invariably protects Fiji coral reefs health stimulates ongoing research.

The College Tuition Crisis
College Tuition Crisis College tuition has been an increasingly intense topic of discussion over
the years. The costs of higher education have been debated by many people, and it has been
discussed as to whether costs are becoming too high for students to afford. College has become
more and more popular, and now as many as 20 million students attend universities reported by The
National Center for Education Statistics (1). The value of a college degree is immense, but college
tuitionis becoming too expensive for students to afford, and furthering the problem are students
lack of knowledge on how to pay and earn moneytowards their college degree. College has become
a norm in today s society so much so, that the average costs of higher educationare not really
discussed. A public two year in district college was $3,520 for a full time undergraduate student
in 2016 2017 (Baum 68). Baum also declares that a public four year in state undergraduate tuition
was $9,650; a public four year out of state college cost $24,930; a private nonprofit four year
college costs $33,480; and a for profit college cost $16,000 for that same school year. (68). Across
the nation, figures will vary because of the obvious geographical region differences, but also
because of price discrimination. Price discrimination allows institutions to discount their prices for a
lot of students (Baum 79). Institutions do this based on individual student circumstances, and it
segments the market. Institutions

Jap A Economic Power
Japan, to this day, is a major economic power that has major influence on the rest of the world. It
is a nuclear state, and has a GDP of almost 5 trillion USD. Japan wasn t just like this and has gone
through a tremendous period of growth after World War II in 1945. Since then, its economy has
grown through its technological and manufacturing side. When the company was defeated in 1945,
it was in an economic ruin. Everything that came before was in shambles, but little did the country
know there was huge room for growth. (Ohno, 2006)
After Japan was defeated in 1945, Japan was under US occupation. During this time a recovery
strategy was put into place to work with the already in motion political and economic system. The
Japanese entered a period of rapid growth between the years 1950 1970. This growth completely
changed the economy and made Japan one of the best capitalistic economies of its time. Japan was
a major industrialized nation with many new companies coming into power. This would of not
been possible without Subsidies, fukkin loans and US aid. (Ohno, 2006)The Japanese benifeted
from the war because of its close alliance with America and the fact of letting American troops
station in Japan.
War was actually an important factor of economic growth in Japan. Due to the fact of many
factories and companies being wiped during the war, investments were made to bring better
equipment into the factory so that efficiency was highly prioritized. Ohno puts it, New

Hope in the Shawshank Redemption
Shawshank Redemption Essay Question 8: Analyse how specific techniques were used to portray
inspiring ideas in a visual; or oral text. Directed by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption
tells the Story of Andy Dufrane, a man who has been wrongly convicted of murder and must
endure life inside the harsh and corrupt Shawshank prison, but despite this he never loses hope of
finding freedom. Hope is an important inspiring idea in this film, as it is what sustains him during
the long and difficult years within the prison, and it is the result of this enduring hope that Andy
finally finds freedom. There are many visual and oral techniques used throughout the film to portray
the idea of hope. This includes the hope that Andy holds, and... Show more content on

At this point the lighting is very bright and natural. This small glimpse of the outside world
reinvigorates Andy s hope and sustains him through his time at Shawshank. We drank beer like
free men said Red, showing how this small act represented so much freedom for the men. But
the light in this scene was bright evening light, the last glimpse of light at the end of the day
before becoming darkness. This symbolises that Andy s hope is only fleeting, soon he must
return to the confines of Shawshank, A language feature used in The Shawshank Redemption to
show hope is dialogue. In particular there is Reds voice over narration, which shows how Reds
opinion of hope changes throughout the movie. Andy is a symbol of hope in Shawshank, and it
is not only Andy s hope that grows but he also affects the inmate around him. When Andy first
tells Red of his dream to go to Mexico, Red says; Hope is a dangerous thing. It will drive a man
insane, it has no place here. This shows how Red thought that hope was pointless and futile. This
also shows how the prison could take away a man s hope; even turn him bitterly against the idea
of it. It is only when Andy eventually makes his escape that the inmates realise how truly
powerful hope is. When Red is released from prison and make his way to Mexico, he says; I hope
the Pacific is as blue as it is in my dreams. I hope. This use of repetition shows the attitude

The Enlightenment And The American Revolution
The Enlightenment was the root of many of the ideas of the American Revolution. It was a
movement that focused mostly on freedom of speech, equality, freedom of press, and religious
tolerance. The American Revolution was the time period where America tried to gain its
independence from England. They got influenced very much from many philosophers. That will be
discussed throughout the essay. The Enlightenment ideas were the main influences for American
Colonies to become their own nation.
Some of the leaders of the American Revolution were influenced by Enlightenment ideas which are,
freedom of speech, equality, freedom of press, and religious tolerance. American colonists did not
have these rights, in result, they rebelled against England for independence. In the Declaration of
Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote about American s natural rights to life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness. These ideas came from the Enlightenment, the ideals led towards the
American Revolution soon after (Fisk). The American Revolution must be considered as an
anticolonial war for independence, not only a war of liberation from overseas rule but a war for
freedom. The American Revolution was a movement to fulfill aspirations to acquire more property
(Morris, 3).
Montesquieu believed that everything was made up of laws or rules that never changed. He wrote
the book The Spirit of the Laws, which greatly covers the importance of separation of power in

Hitler Was The Leader Of The Great Germany
Hitler was the leader of the great Germany in the beginning of the 20th century. Hitler did a lot of
things and he is mainly remembered for his atrocious actions toward the Jewish. One of the few
things that he was responsible for, and is not much talked about today, is the Degenerate Art
Exhibition. The Degenerate Art Exhibition displayed specific types of artwork, and I believe that
the Still life of Aubergines would have been part of the exhibition for numerous reasons.
As, Barron states, Hitler and his followers, the National socialists, believed in the superiority of the
blond, blue eyed Nordic Hero (4). The people with those characteristics belongs to the Aryan race.
According to Barron, the beliefs and ideas that the Nazis were promoting were not something
new (4). Barron claims that before even Hitler came to power, Germans such ideas (4). First,
Barron suggest that the formation the German empire gave to Germans, a strong sense of
nationalism that manifested itself quite often as a belief in the natural superiority of the Aryan
people (4). According to Barron Germans were highly influenced at that time, by Darwin s book
The Descent of Man and his theory of evolution (4). The main reason why the book had such a
huge impact on Germans mindsets was, as Barron explains, The year 1871 marked both the
emergence of the German empire and the publication of Charles Darwin s The descent of man, a
book later used to justify German racism (4). Then Barron adds that,

The Impact Parental Incarceration on Children s Development and Attachment Style
The greatest threat to a child s well being in the United States is parental incarceration The
Sentencing Project. A 500% increase has made The land of the Free the top country in the world for
housing inmates in its correctional facilities, with more than 2.2 million currently incarcerated
(BJS, 2011). Excusing one s views on the appropriateness of the justice system and incarceration, it
is evident that parental imprisonment disrupts the relationship between a parent and a child
tremendously. In addition to the absence of nurturance, economic stresses are heightened which can
cause the remaining family to become unstable. Because there has is not a lot of research dedicated
to the wellbeing of children who have a parent incarcerated, it is vital that more attention be paid to
the nations children. Our goal in this paper is to examine the impact of parental incarceration on
children s development and attachment style.
The background literature for this topic has been subdivided into three categories. To understand the
impact of incarceration we must first look at the parent child relationship, warm parental
interactions are associated with effective problem solving in adolescence and adulthood, while
hostile interactions are associated with destructive adolescent behavior (Ge, Best, Conger Simons,
1996a; Rueter conger, 1995). We must observe the

Romeo And Juliet Character Development Essay
The story of Romeo and Juliet has been very well known for centuries, with the beautiful Juliet
and the courageous Romeo, it s a beautiful thing to see the love and emotions that blossom
between the two. The whole affair however, is risky due to the fact that their families hate one
another, The Montagues and the Capulets have been feuding for a long time so the one
paradigm shift between these two young lovers is the start of harmony between the families.
Juliet begins as a girl with no sense of the real world, no sense of how she wants to live her life
differently, no sense of the disagreements she has against her family. Romeo felt the same, he had
no true life ambition, only to live life on the edge and snatch up a pretty woman here and there.
However, the development of Romeo throughout this play is the clearly seen maturity that develops
and arises within Romeo to make the ultimate sacrifice for the one he loves. This development is

How Does Earthquake Affect The Earthquake
Task Two: Earthquakes and Buildings
The type of buildings that were the most damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
In the 6.3 magnitude Christchurch earthquake that occurred at 12.51pm on the 22nd of February
2011, the types of buildings that were the most damaged were houses and commercial buildings
that were built in the 19th and early 20th century. The majority of these buildings that were
damaged were ones that relied on single or double brick for their structure. This relates to how the
bricks are placed on the house and whether there are two layers or one layer of brick. Buildings
made of bricks and stones were damaged because they can t move with the earth and most of the
bricks crack and fall off making the structure a lot less stable and more likely to collapse in an
aftershock.
Brick chimneys on the old wooden houses fell over and crashed through the roofs and caused a
lot of damage. Stone buildings such as the Old Stone House were also badly damaged and had to
be closed following the February 2011 earthquake. The most structural damage mainly occurred in
houses that were made of heavy materials such as stones, bricks or concrete. This is because it is
harder for these building materials to withstand strong shaking and to support their own weight
when they begin to lose shape. They can t bounce back as easy once they have been forced in the
other direction. This forces the buildings to fall outwards or collapse.
A lot of damage occurred in houses and

put in the effort to get to know someone unless we need something from him or her or we put in the
minimal effort necessary to keep the conversation from getting to awkward. The book calls this the
uncertainty reduction theory. The uncertainty reduction phase has three steps to it. The entry phase,
which is the time when a relationship is just beginning. The subjects are strangers and have never

What is communication? We often define communication as the act of talking to one another via
different platforms, be it face to face, via emails or even through videos. Through this act, we are
trying to pass a message or relate something to the intended audience. We face this every day in
our lives, even if we do not leave the house and talk to anyone. For example, even reading a
cooking recipe is counted as a form of communication. It is a form of communication between the
reader and the writer. The reader is trying to comprehend and follow the steps given by the writer

Many people would know of this unfortunate incident, but not many would know that it was
probably the cause of an ineffective communication. The incident goes as follows, In July of
1945, the allied leaders had a meeting in Potsdam and they submitted a stiffly worded declaration
of surrender terms to the Japanese. These terms had included a statement to the effect that any
negative answer would invite prompt and utter destruction. The allied leaders (Harry S Truman,
Winston Churchill and Stalin) also stated that they hoped that Japan would agree to surrender
unconditionally and prevent devastation of the Japanese homeland and that they patiently
awaited Japan s answer. This was known as the Potsdam Declaration. The Japanese Premier at
that time, Kantaro Suzuki answered using the Japanese word mokusatsu , which is derived from
the word for silence . Yet, this word had a second meaning which also means not worthy of
comment . In the heat of the moment, the meaning was thought to be the second one, which may
be true as the Japanese were very prideful, as we can see from the Kamikaze spirit. To rather die

The Short Story Of Richard Van Camp
A tragedy in its own right must evoke emotion and a response from the audience through effective
use of several elements evident in Shakespeare s and Aristotle s style of tragic writing. The plot
progression of a tragedy should be rather specific under the idea which leads, ultimately, to the
downfall of the protagonist. Despite the sorrowful story behind Richard Van Camp s short story
Mermaids, the exclusion of several core elements from both styles of writing prevent this piece
from being classified a tragedy. Mermaids lacked the development of a tragic flaw in the main
character, Torchy, and furthermore did not lead the character to their tragic demise, Van Camp
also excluded the idea of isolating him over time and rather brought him closer to those around
him to get over his inner conflict, which is unlike a tragedy. A central character in a tragic piece
of writing should develop in a way where they are lead [ushered] to their demise due to a critical
flaw, which is caused by the inability to solve an inner conflict. Torchy was found to be at a
rather low point in his life evident by his use of drugs and his gambling issues. Despite these
vices, he does not allow it to destroy him. His relationship with the young girl, Stephanie, who
was neglected by her parents, allowed him to reflect on his past particularly after his brother s
death. [M]y daddy s gone, she says... I ll be your sister... if you ll be my brother ... I start to cry

William Shakespeare s Hamlet And Macbeth
The use of supernatural has always been a popular yet successful choice of film makers and
writers. In Shakespeare s Hamlet and Macbeth, the ghost imitates the feelings of the protagonists
for the audience as well. Shakespeare s tragedies include supernatural in order to catch interest of a
reader which consists heroes with desires of the supernatural ending up in a tragedy. Through their
use of ghostand the supernatural, we can see the similarities and differences of the plays that will
help effectively for a wider understanding of the plays and its themes. Shakespeare starts Macbeth
with a supernatural scene with 3 witches as the evil. Hamleton the other hand, starts with a similar
style of use by including ghost of Hamlet s father in its story. However, in both plays,
differentiating between good and evil of the supernatural was not sure of the protagonists.
Moreover, the supernatural lead the heroes into pitfall of characters in both. The use of leading
the protagonists to a bad outcome is both present in these plays. In Macbeth, he won t feel the urge
to murder the king if the three witches didn t make him to such evil deeds, causing him to not
change his ways such as killing everyone in his path. Hamlet on the other hand leads the same
structure, where seeing the ghost of his father leads to a tragic fight in the end, losing his live. If
only he hadn t known that the throne was obtained through murder, things would have been in a
different way, losing the

Meursault Quotes
Within the context of The Stranger, the character Meursault, makes an interesting statement as a
man who thinks that life is pointless. Under theorization, Meursault states, I realized then that a
man who had lived only one day could easily for a hundred years in prison. (Meursault 79)With
this quote, there are many various topics to elaborate on, such as, how Meursault reached this
conclusion, the meaning of the quote, and what the realization means for a man who thinks life is
meaningless. Meursault wanders about his cell looking to kill time when he begins to use his
imagination , mentally noticing every small detail that was in his old room. I would remember

History Of The Topographical Engineers
The history of the Topographical Engineers defines and highlights many changes in the Army
over the years. The resources and assets provided over the years has changed in some dynamics.
Engineers have always and will always provide many needed skill sets. Engineers have been the
driving force through the years for the military. It has been the engineers that provided an
unexplained amount of capabilities to the battlefield. Those capabilities were not just limited to
war though. The contributions of the engineers have been used on the civil side during times of
peace as well. The engineers have always provided an ever evolving skill that is in broad use in
multiple ways. Topographical Engineers saw many changes in the early years leading to the
engineers of today. Those changes have in no way changed the mission set forth in the beginning
by the Topographical Engineers, to the current mission of the Corp of Engineers today. In all those
changes and restructure engineers still and will always be one of the greatest assets the Army has
at its disposal.
Origin of the Topographical Engineers The history of the engineers dates all the way back to the
Continental Army in 1775. During this time it was determined by the Continental Congress that
there would be three positions. The first of the three positions would be the Chief Engineer along
with two assistant engineers. This would the start to the Corps of Engineers. It was not until 1812
during the war that the first

Developmental Changes Of Temporal And Spectral Parameters
Tatiana Lyons SLHS3305W Assignment Three 12/1/16 Research Article Critique Lee,
Potamianos, and Narayanan studied acoustics of children s speech: developmental changes of
temporal and spectral parameters in 1998. The researchers conducted the study to explore the
relationships between different aspects of speech (formant frequencies, fundamental frequency,
and segmentation patterns) and age and gender. Better understanding of these relationships
would provide information that could be used to improve technology used for speech
recognition, which is necessary because speech recognition technology often has trouble
recognizing children s speech (p. 1455). In addition, the authors stated, a more chronologically
detailed acoustic database (p. 1455) could provide important information regarding the
relationships between developmental acoustic patterns and underlying anatomical and
neuromuscular development (p. 1455). Two hundred and twenty nine male speakers and 207
female speakers in between the ages of five and 18 as well as 29 male speakers and 27 female
speakers in between the ages of 25 and 50 participated in the study. Researchers asked the
participants to read five different sentences off of a computer screen, and each sentence appeared
twice in a session. Younger participants read single words, and if a participant did not know how
to read a particular word or sentence, they listened to a recording. The words and sentences were
chosen because they consisted vowels

George Rogers Clark Memorial Research Paper

Thursday, September 3, 2015
The George Rogers Clark National Historical Park is a 26 acre historical park in the Midwest
Regional Office located in Vincennes Indiana. Over the weekend of August 29th, 2015 my family
and I visited the George Rogers Clark Museum. My wife and I actually live very close to
Vincennes Indiana, as it is only a 25 minute drive and we frequently visit Vincennes for shopping
and dining. While we do visit this town about once a month, I do admit that I have never been or
paid a lot of attention to the memorial. The memorial itself is quite interesting to look at from afar
as you drive past it, but you can t really appreciate what it has to offer unless you take the time and
visit the site in person and really admire its history. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The memorial itself is quite large and sits right on the Wabash River. The building itself is a
neoclassical granite rotunda with 16 Doric columns that circles a bronze sculpture of Colonel
Clark leaning on his sword. The words in scripted on the outer front reads: The Conquest of the
West George Rogers Clark and The Frontiersman of the American Revolution. The building itself
reminds me of the Donato Bramante, Tempietto. The columns represented in the Tempietto are also
Doric, with the top section being decorated as well, but the Tempietto is decorated with objects of
Christian liturgy in sculptural relief. The exterior of the building is made of granite that is from
Vermont, Minnesota; and some from Alabama. A large eagle stands over the entrance way with its

Imaging Of Musculoskeletal Disorders And The Early 1900 s...
Imaging of musculoskeletal disorders began in the early 1900 s with the invention and utilization
of radiography and fluoroscopic equipment (McKinnis, 2014). Evolutions in imaging now allow
for clearer digital recorded images of fluoroscopy, radiographs, computed tomography (CT), and
magnetic resonance imaging (McKinnis, 2014). From the beginning, imaging has not been an
isolated or sole diagnostic tool. The clinician s expertise in the evaluation process, the
comprehensive evaluation and assessment of the patient, documented and reported patient history,
associated signs and symptoms, and the additional medical test results along with red flags must
be taken into account when considering referral for imaging (Dutton, 2012; McKinnis, 2014).
There are several clinical prediction rules and guidelines, which have been created to assist health
care providers in managing the utilization and prevention of inappropriate imaging (Dutton, 2012;
Gan, Harkey, Hemingway, Hughes, Duszak, 2016; Gidwani et al., 2016; McKinnis, 2014). Based
on the aforementioned information, not all spinal patients will require or should receive spinal
imaging. MRIs and other forms of imaging can produce false negatives, false positives, and reader
interpretation and assessment errors, therefore the results of a MRI or any other form of imaging
should not be the sole reason for any diagnosis or intervention (Dutton, 2012; Fu et al., 2016; Gan,

The Blind Side Film Analysis
The Blind Side is an extraordinary film based on a true story. Michael Oher, an African
American teenage boy is one of the main characters. He grew up very poor in the inner city
housing projects with his mother in Memphis Tennessee. He had no idea who is father was, and
his mother was a drug addict. Michael had very little formal education and very few skills in order
to help him learn. It wasn t until Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohytook him into their home and made
changes in Michael s life for the better. The Tuohy family had two kids of their own. A daughter
Collins and a son S.J. S.J was immediately accepting to the idea of taking in Michael, whereas
Collins had a very difficult time. This may be because it was not a part of Collins normal culture.
She saw Michael as an outsider for various reasons. He was a poor, homeless, African American.
The Tuohy s were a very wealthy, high class, white family. Collins worried what her peers at
school would think and worried she would be looked at differently. Over time she did not allow
other people s opinions bother her and accepted Michael into her family. Leigh Anne made sure
Michael knew he had every opportunity to succeed just like everyone else. When she saw his
interest in football, she made sure the coaches knew the best ways to use Michael s skills. Not
only did the Tuohy s provide Michael with a loving and caring home, but also hired a tutor in
order for him to improve his education. If it wasn t for the Tuohy family,

I love the poem because it s exciting and almost as good as my two lines of Shakespeare. This
reveals that by spending time in the hospital to dealing with typhoid fever, Frank discovers his

Legalizing Same-Sex Marriages
The topic of legalizing same sex marriages brings up heated debates on legal, religious, moral,
and philosophical grounds. In researching material for this paper this writer could not help but
read reports that indicate that the country is fairly well divided on this issue. The debate can go
round and around and the answer to the question of legalizing same sex marriages is not as easy as
it may seem. There are solid rebuttals to any supposition one makes on the issue, making the debate
a lot more interesting than one might believe.
In general there are several philosophical arguments against same sex marriage: The first claims that
marriage is an innately reproductive union of two people and that same sex marriages innately lack
the potential for any type of reproduction, therefore it is metaphysically and biologically impossible
for homosexuals to become married to one another. Thus, same sex marriages should not occur.
Critics of this line of reasoning would state that there is no one who would support the notion of not
allowing infertile heterosexual couples or fertile heterosexual couples who do not plan to have
children the right to marry one another. Thus, this argument is not valid as an explanation of why
same sex marriages should not be allowed. However, the rebuttal to this counter argument would be
that the sexual intercourse that takes place between either infertile heterosexual couples or
heterosexual couples not desiring children is reproductive in kind.

How Did Joseph Stalin Rise To Power
World War 1 was a dreadful war to end all wars. The rise to power of the authoritarian leaders of
the interwar period was more a result of their political skills than the social and economic climate
of their countries. This statement can be considered true because of Stalin s rise to power. His rise
to power was represented in three ways, Tricking Trotsky, Soviet UnionParty and Military
Leadership.
One major consideration for the rise of Stalin to ultimate power over Russia was his political and
cunning abilities. The most major usage and reason that these were effective in his rise were there
use in the elimination of Trotsky and his other political rivals such as Leon Trotsky, within the
Bolshevik Party. Stalin was the master of tricking politicians. He used mind games to his advantage.
After the death of Vladimir Lenin on January 21st 1924, Stalin and Trotsky got invited to his
funeral. Stalin tricked Trotsky into thinking the funeral was on a different date to what it was
originally planned on. (Harvey, 2003) Stalin arrived at the funeral but there was no sign of
Trotsky. All of Trotsky s followers joined Stalin... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Sputnik s Victory In Space
Victory in the World s Eyes In 1955, the Soviet Union and the United States of America started

Americans and Soviets were driven by ambition. Captain Cook says, I had the ambition to not
only go farther than man had gone before, but to go as far as it was possible to go. The Sputnik I
was the very first man made object to get into space, which started off the space race. The
determination burned in the Americans and Soviets hearts, and they both decided to reach the
moon first, if it was the last thing they did. On both sides, many cosmonauts and astronauts lost
their lives to this dream of getting into space, but they would not let one or two deaths... Show more

November 1964. It flew by Mars on July 14 and 15, 1965. These were the first ever pictures of
Mars. The distance from earth to mars was three hundred and nine kilometers. That is a long
distance. The Luna XV The Luna 15, a Soviet Union mission, was launched on July thirteenth,
1969, just three days before the Apollo 11 launched. The Soviet Union might not put the first man
on the moon, but it sure wasn t going to lose the race. The Luna 15 was created to robotically

because at the last minute, Soviet technicians decided to change the Luna 15 s course, to get closer
to the American landing place, but it malfunctioned and crashed on the moon s surface. The Apollo

Michael Collins on the Apollo 11 mission. They succeeded, and landed on the lunar surface. There,
on the moon, Neil Armstrong uttered the words that would be so famous till this day. That s one
small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. On that mission, Armstrong and Aldrin both
collected rocks on the lunar surface. They came back to earth safe and sound, and they fortunately

The Growing Concern on Food Safety
There is growing concern about food safety and especially about inputs of pathogenic
microorganisms
with possible implications for human health and the environment [1]. Microbial activity is a primary
mode of deterioration of many foods and is often responsible for the loss of quality and safety.
Concern
over pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms in foods is increasing due to the increase in
outbreaks of
foodborne disease [2]. It has been estimated that as many as 30% of people in the industrialized
countries
suffer from food borne diseases each year caused by microbes [3]. Food additives have been used
for centuries in the food processing practices for several purposes including the prevention of
microbial
growth and increase in the food shelf lives [4]. Due to the excessive use of food preservatives
which some
of them are doubtful to be carcinogenic and teratogenic and also increasing consumer demand to
natural
foods with a long shelf life and without chemical preservatives, food producers trend to replace
chemical
preservatives with natural forms such as oils and herbal extracts as antibacterial additives [5, 6].
In the recent years, efforts have been devoted to find new antimicrobial materials from natural
resources
for food preservation [7]. Reports indicated that many extracts and essential oils of edible plants had
properties to prevent against a wide range of fungal contamination of foods [5, 7, 8, 9, 10].

Christian Dalits And The Caste Essay
Christian Dalits also suffer alienation from their fellow Hindu Dalits because of social and
religious differences. Hindu Dalits see their fellow Christian Dalits as potential competitors in the
share of reservations which are given by the government. This disfavor is primarily due to non
Christian Dalits seeing their Christian counterparts as already having benefited from and uplifted
by missionary and ecclesiastical assistance. Many of them also see conversion to Christianityas a
shameful surrender of one s beliefs.
Dalit Christians also receive persecution from fellow Christians who are not part of a scheduled
caste. Since the Scheduled Caste Act only applies to Dalits, people who are of higher caste status
are exempt from the loss of their caste identity. Even though these people profess Christian beliefs,
they still practice social distance, untouchability, and social stratification toward their Dalit
counterparts. Many of them append their caste suffix to their names, which are read in the church
at marriages, funerals, and other occasions. This behavior is seen evidently in Tamil Nadu.
There are many discriminations that exist within both Catholic and Protestant churches toward
Dalit Christians in Tamil Nadu. One of the most striking practices is the construction of two
separate chapels; one for non Dalits, and the other for Dalits. When both groups do have services
together, the Dalits are expected to take seats on the floor even if there are benches or chairs.

Analysis and summery of MCDP 2, Leading Marines.
Leading Marines is the greatest resource that I have come across so far for guidance and
motivation in becoming a leader of Marines. In one neat sentence located in the forward, we are
given everything that sums up what is expected of future leaders of Marines: Our actions as
Marines every day must embody the legacy of those who went before us. Marines have a great
expectation to live up to, and as commissioned officers we must absolutely carry on the tradition of
excellent leadershipthat has come before us. This leadership comes in many forms under many
different conditions. As there are no two people who are exactly alike, there is no single way to

Our country was a maritime nation at its birth in 1775 and still is today. Four of Five capitals are
within 300 miles of a coast, demonstrating the importance of an infantry force from the sea to
national security. Together, the individual Marine, similar indoctrination, every Marine a rifleman ,
and our maritime heritage make up the Marine tradition.
The second chapter of Leading Marines is titled Foundations. It lays out the foundation of every
Marine leader; it is a collection of the principles taught to all Marines. Our core values, and
Marine leadership principles make up the bulk of the chapter. Leadership is what makes men
take action against their most basic instinct of self preservation. Leadership is based not only on
the Marine ethos, but also on certain elements of leadership philosophy. The elements rely on
each other, and collectively they serve to help guide a Marine leader in decision making. These
values must be reflected in a leaders action, otherwise the follower has no faith in the leader and
the words become hollow and meaningless. As Marines, we are held to a higher standard then the
rest of society because of the nature of our profession. Just because we carry arms and have an
awesome amount of power, does not mean that we can do as we please. With the application of
force comes a strict liability, requiring the individual

MBM is a scientific approach to management that integrates theory and practice, and provides a framework for dealing with the ongoing challenges of growth and change (KOCH, 2007). Five Dimensions The theory of MBM is rooted in the Science of Human Action and is defined by five dimensions: (figure 1) (GP, 2014). Until now I have never heard of or read about Market Based Management. I m privileged to know someone who worked at Georgia Pacific where the employees were required to take courses. They used guiding principles for reviews and evaluations. By using these dimensions along with the guiding principles we presume and organization will be successful both internal and external. This has been proved successful for Koch Industries, however there are still arguments that it doesn t apply to all business sectors. For example: Let s take the dimension Incentives. An employee performing the day to day activities improves a process and the accomplishments of time saving or elimination. Based on the MBM Incentive, this should be rewarded. This will be acknowledged by direct reports but then taken up the chain command, only to find out that it s not relevant at that level. How does this employee get rewarded based on the guidelines? Also, a salary increase would be an incentive for the employee to perform good work. In the MBM culture, salary is based on the market for the area the employee works in. A ... • 4. Essay on William Shakespeare s 18th and 55th Sonnets William Shakespeare s 18th and 55th Sonnets Both William Shakespeare s 18th and 55th sonnet s are full and complete examples of poetry at its best, and, while studying Shakespeare s form is very important, it is equally so to look at the content and even further deep to its true meanings. His techniques which have immortalized him over several centuries are displayed at their best while still capturing his goal of honoring his lover. Although the two poems were written separately, the shared theme is evident and they almost seem to flow together. In the 18th sonnet, Shakespeare begins by comparing his lover to a summer s day, which may be seen as a high compliment. Upon reading further, you find that not even the sun and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the previous lines, he expressed the link of future lovers to the life of his own. He speaks of broken marble, neglected tombs, war, fire, and the greatest challenge, time, but, through it all, his love will live on in the eyes of the future. In his elaborate comparisons, Shakespeare uses extensive imagery along with personification and analogies from the very beginning of the 18th sonnet where he characterizes the admired one as a summer s day. His descriptions of besmeared tombs and the fiery wars described in the 55th pull the reader in and force a vision of impending doom, only to be brought back out to a more serene feel by the ending lines describing eternal life and love. Things not usually mobile are brought to life by his personification, such as the sun and his golden complexion in the ever famous 18th sonnet. Even more moving is the characterization of death, made human and able to do such things as brag and consume one in his looming shade. The wind is given the power to blow itself and shake the darling buds of May while in the 55th Shakespeare declares mortal men unable to outlive this powerful rhyme, making it nearly god like. The mysterious lover discussed so often in his works brings them the writing to life and fills us with questions as to who this powerful figure in William Shakespeare s life could have been. One ... • 5. Virtue In Hamlet This quote, in the literal sense, begs for one to be true to one s self, as someone who is not true to himself is false. This sentiment expressed by Polonius becomes seemingly incongruous with the events and judgments made throughout the play, as the theme of deceit reigns over that of virtue. While the play progresses, the characters demonstrate a growing struggle for virtueand lose the power to be true to their own selves, thus compromising their abilities to uphold justice. As actualities regarding King Hamlets death become apparent, either truthfulness and virtue, or the ability to maintain justice is compromised. This concept is especially present in considering Hamlet s pursuit of revenge for his father s death. His erratic and ineffective... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the play, granted his pensive and emotional nature, Hamlet does eventually evolve due to much moral and virtuous growth, and while he never reaches the standards of a prince qualified to oversee a nation, he does outgrow the role of the politically subordinate fawner. Internal growth occurred when Hamlet finally learned to differentiate between his true self in relation to his perception of self. His initial fits of madness and antic dispositions made this differentiation vaguer, as these episodes had called into question his mental stability. When presented on a public platform, Hamlet s stability seemed to be deteriorating; however, in reviewing his introspective side, its clear that he feels great pain due to his father s death, as demonstrated by his constant contemplation surrounding how he can best handle the situation. It is when Hamlet discovers his sense of self that he develops a sense of virtue that begins to allow him to exhibit both characteristics of integrity and justice; however, it is not until the accidental murder of his mother that Hamlet develops the motivation of social justice in conjunction with virtue. This being said, the struggle for a balance of justice and virtue does not occur until Hamlet feels that he has contributed to upholding social justice by convicting those responsible for their crimes. This notion of imbalance is especially present in Hamlet s plan to get revenge for his father s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Emotionality In A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner A Rose for Emily is a short story in which William Faulkner, the author uses manipulation of time and the perspective of the townspeople to present the life of a seemingly psychotic titular character, Emily Grierson. Emily, throughout her life, faces the hardships of loneliness and disconnection in life through the deaths of her loved ones and the coming of a transforming society. When Emily s father dies, she loses the only person that was ever associated with her, until she finally finds love for the first time in Homer Barron. However, Emily is crushed when she realizes Homer is not looking to get together and kills him to preserve the only person she found love in. Although Emily might be considered evil and psychopathic on the basis of her actions alone, knowing her father s aggression, her loneliness, and the townspeople s responsiveness towards her can lead one to react more sympathetically towards Emily. To contextualize Emily s behavior, as a young lady, she was held back and restricted from engaging in many activities and was symbolically shown to be in an abusive household. Through the townspeople s description of the titular character and her father, it is evident that Emily grew up with a father who was very aggressive and completely unlike her, which forms the reader to feel sympathetically towards her, because she had never experienced the love from a family anyone needs to grow and mature. The Townspeople long thought of them as a tableau (Faulkner 3), or a spectacle, and saw Emily as an innocent person hindered in the family. Emily is also detailed as a slender figure in white (Faulkner 3), which expresses her purity compared to her father who was a silhouette (Faulkner 3), or a dark figure visible dominantly over the light figure of Emily. The abusiveness and dominance of Mr. Grierson is shown as he has his back to her and clutching a horsewhip (Faulkner 3). Emily was fairly different from most southern belle women at the time, as she was single until age 30 mainly because of all the young men her father had driven away (Faulkner 3). As a human being, deaths are some of the most, if not the most, damaging to one s mental state, and it s clear to feel sympathetic towards Emily and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Antecedent Intervention Strategies Analysis The two strategies identified are effective strategies. Education has always acknowledged and recognized the connection between an individual s behavior and their surrounding environment. Antecedent intervention strategies aim at introducing modifications so that incidents occurring before the problem occurs are either removed or altered in some way such that they no longer prompt the problems and can even extend to increasing the likelihoods of the desired behavior (Kern Clemens, 2007). This strategy has several layers, as at the universal level it can focus on organizing the environment to avert problems and increase motivation. This then creates a safe environment but also creates a conducive environment which supports learning. This strategy tends to have an instant... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It also targets specific skills, which means when the teacher is clearly aware of the targeted behaviour and the objectives of the strategy, which makes it easier for teachers to assess and adapt the strategy. The other advantage is that the child does experience confusion in understanding the aim of the lesson and the behaviour that is expected of them. DI not only teaches the child new skills but also provides the child with several opportunities to review and practice these skills in different settings. Mitchell (2014) says the plasticity of the developing brain allows children to learn new things when the child reviews and practices these newly learnt skills and over a period of time gain confidence in using it. The brain makes new connections to the surviving structure and strengthens the connections. This is especially important as children in their early years are in their prime to learn specific emotional skills, which will impact their behavioural skills. Having positive experiences and opportunities to practice these skills strengthens the experience and enhances the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Symbolism In The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe is known for the various literary devices he uses in his works. One of the most famous devices he uses is symbolism. In many of his stories, including The Masque of the Red Death, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell Tale Heart, and The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses symbolism to further develop each story by the messages he writes between the lines. Symbolism is an important aspect of Poe s many works, seeing as how it allows the readers to make connections within the stories. In The Cask of Amontillado, Poe represents symbolism through the title of the short story, the outfit Fortunato wears, and the Montresor family motto and coat of arms. Many would not look to a title of a piece of literature for symbolism. In The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses the key word cask as a huge symbol. The word cask refers to, a sturdy cylindrical container for storing liquids, such as Amontillado, a fine wine, in this case (Lorcher). Montresor introduces the topic of the wine to his former friend Fortunato by saying, My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to day. But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts (Poe). Fortunato is extremely intoxicated from carnival festivities prior to his conversation with Montresor, so it is probable that his decision to go into the catacombs with Montresor is not for the benefit of anyone but himself. He sees this journey with Montresor as a way to acquire one of two possible outcomes free wine or a chance to further humiliate Montresor, especially after Montresor suggests that Fortunato is not capable of distinguishing the Amontillado and mentions the name of a rival, Luchresi (Lorcher). The symbolism in the key word of cask is that it has the same root as the word casket. Poe s use of symbolism in this regard is often overlooked and written off as mere coincidence, yet that is far from the truth. Fortunato s love of wine, and the ignorant and easily influenced state the wine puts him in, leads him to make some of his most destructive decisions to not only others, but also to himself. The Amontillado is a symbol of Fortunato s downfall, or in other words, the love he has for the cask ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Chinese Religions And The Western World Until very recently, the Chinese religions have remained fairly unknown to the Western world. Unlike the religions that have stemmed from the Middle East or the Indian subcontinent, East Asian philosophies have never had a strong concept of missionary spirit. Therefore, their expanse remained confined to the East Asian nations of China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan and Mongolia. However, in the last hundred years or so, an increase in political, commercial, and cultural contacts of the East Asian region with other parts of the world broke this trend. This helped to spread the philosophies of East Asian sages all around the globe. Scriptures and traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism spread beyond the East Asian region and reached areas far and beyond, thus spreading their concept of harmony, and love for the beauty of nature. Today, a considerable amount of East Asian populations live throughout Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas and continue to influence the people and culture of these regions (Hopfe, 170.) Therefore, to acknowledge the impact of the aforementioned East Asian philosophies on American culture, this essay discusses three significant elements of the American lifestyle healthcare, cuisine, and art. Traditional Chinese Medicine, based on Chinese traditions of more than 2,000 years, comprises of various medicinal practices such as acupuncture, herbal medicines, massage (Tui Na), and exercise (qigong). Unlike other branches of medicine, the ideology ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Life, School And College Life From High School College life is very different from High School. Longer classes in some cases longer break periods, and trying to balance your life at work, school, and home can be very overwhelming for most students, making it very important to have a schedule and daily planner to better balance life at school and home. Creating a schedule and managing my time for myself has been both surprisingly easy and difficult. My mornings from Monday to Thursday are the same for me as it was in High School. I would wake up at 6:20 am, get dressed, eat breakfast, walk to the bus stop, wait, ride the bus to my High School, enter my school, and wait until 8:00 am for class to start. Now instead of walking to the bus stop, my mom gives me a ride to my uncle s house because he works near Pierce College and I ride with him to school. He drops me off around 7:40 am and I wait until English 101 begins. Afterwards, once English 101 at 9:30 am I have a half hour break to eat lunch until Counseling 40 begins. Finally, at 11:30 am Counseling 40 ends I wait in the library till 12:00 pm and walk to the Orange Line bus stop. And I ride the bus and can be home by 1:30 pm. Afterwards, I would relax for an hour before I would work an essay or read a chapter for an hour, then I would watch TV till 7:00 pm for dinner. My Friday s and weekends are usually free days for me, I only occasionally have to do chores, study, homework, or stay at Grandma s on Saturday night. • 11. The gains and losses of Gallipoli Assess the gains and losses of Gallipoli Gallipoli gave Australia its identity as nation and built what our nation is today. Gallipoli was one major fundamental factor in our culture. When you look back into the history of Australia at war you ll hear Anzacs and diggers a lot. These names all came from one war and in fact one battle. Anzac stands for the Australian New Zealand army corps. The term diggers comes from soldiers continually digging trenches, holes and bunkers to sleep in and take cover during an artillery duel. The term has remained with us for over 90 years. Our soldiers are still living in holes. The landing at Anzac cove, Gallipoli, is a significant part in the history of our identity in the war and the world. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were eight Victoria crosses handed out to Australian soldiers during the Gallipoli campaign. One of the most famous VC award winners was Lance Corporal Albert Jacka. On the 19 May, the Turkish launched an a attack to push the Australians into the sea. They seized ten metres of trench at a place called Courtney s Post, but Australians at either end stopped them from continuing to advance. At the northern end Jacka, with several of his mates, tried to get rid the Turkish at the post, but were beaten back. It was then decided that while a feint attack was made from the one end, Jacka would attack from behind. Jacka s mates waited long enough for Jacka to circle in behind and then threw two bombs and gave covering fire. Jacka leapt over the parapet, shot five Turkish soldiers with his rifle, bayonetted two others and forced the rest to flee the captured trench. Members of Jacka s battalion, 14th Battalion, believed he should of won more VC s in France to. Another example of Australian courage was the charge of the 8th and 10th Light Horse regiments at The Nek. The point of this attack was to support an attack that was been made by New Zealand soldiers at Baby 700. The attack was to be at 0430 hours, or 4:30 am. The attack would start with an artillery bombardment at 4:20 am, but the bombardment stopped 5 minutes to early. The officers following their orders kept the men back until 4:30. The law of negligence falls under tort law where it involves harm that is caused by carelessness and not intentional harm (Katter, 2002). A tort is a civil wrong that is in the form of a breach of duty, which amounts to legal remedy that is awarded in damages. Tort lawrests upon two principles that state that an act or omission by the defendant interferes with the rights of the plaintiff, which in turn causes damages (Trindade, 2007). Secondly, the interference caused by the defendant gives rise to a cause of action for damages that are as near as possible to the plaintiff s loss. Therefore, negligencecan be defined as doing something that a reasonable man would not have done in similar circumstances or failure to do what a reasonable man would have done which amounts to infliction of harm. 2.0 Background The main idea of the law of negligence is to ensure that people exercise reasonable care when they act by measuring the potential harm that may foreseeably cause harm to other people. Negligence is the principal trigger for liability to ascend in matters that deal with the loss of property of personal injury. Therefore, a person cannot be liable for something unless they have been found negligent or have contributed to the loss of property or injury to the plaintiff (Stuhmcke, 2005). There is more to ... Bridging Trial Case Study The BRIDGE trial, conducted by Douketis and associates,1 was a randomized, multicenter, double blind, placebo controlled trial that questioned the need for anticoagulation bridging in patients with atrial fibrillation, who are undergoing an invasive procedure that requires interruption of warfarin therapy. The primary efficacy outcome was arterial thromboembolism, which includes stroke, transient ischemic attack, and systemic embolism, whereas the secondary efficacy outcomes were acute myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and death. The primary and secondary safety outcomes were major and minor bleeding, respectively. Patients eligible for this trial must have been 18 years or older, had chronic atrial fibrillationor flutter, been on warfarin therapy for at least 3 months, had an international normalized ratio (INR) of 2.0 to 3.0, were undergoing an elective invasive procedure that required discontinuation of warfarin therapy, and had at least one CHAD2 stroke risk... The analysis also demonstrated no significant difference between the groups when it came to the secondary outcomes: acute myocardial infarction (p=0.1), deep vein thrombosis (p=0.25), pulmonary embolism (p=0.25), and death (p=0.88). However, the bridging group had a significantly higher risk of major (p=0.005) and minor ( 0.001) bleeding than the placebo group. Overall, the authors concluded that, in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing invasive procedures, forgoing bridging was noninferior to bridging with a low molecular weight heparin for atrial thromboembolism prophylaxis and that there was a clinical benefit in forgoing bridging due to the lower risk of major and minor ... • 15. The College Tuition Crisis College Tuition Crisis College tuition has been an increasingly intense topic of discussion over the years. The costs of higher education have been debated by many people, and it has been discussed as to whether costs are becoming too high for students to afford. College has become more and more popular, and now as many as 20 million students attend universities reported by The National Center for Education Statistics (1). The value of a college degree is immense, but college tuitionis becoming too expensive for students to afford, and furthering the problem are students lack of knowledge on how to pay and earn moneytowards their college degree. College has become a norm in today s society so much so, that the average costs of higher educationare not really discussed. A public two year in district college was $3,520 for a full time undergraduate student in 2016 2017 (Baum 68). Baum also declares that a public four year in state undergraduate tuition was $9,650; a public four year out of state college cost $24,930; a private nonprofit four year college costs $33,480; and a for profit college cost $16,000 for that same school year. (68). Across the nation, figures will vary because of the obvious geographical region differences, but also because of price discrimination. Price discrimination allows institutions to discount their prices for a lot of students (Baum 79). Institutions do this based on individual student circumstances, and it segments the market. This symbolises that Andy s hope is only fleeting, soon he must return to the confines of Shawshank, A language feature used in The Shawshank Redemption to show hope is dialogue. In particular there is Reds voice over narration, which shows how Reds opinion of hope changes throughout the movie. Andy is a symbol of hope in Shawshank, and it is not only Andy s hope that grows but he also affects the inmate around him. When Andy first tells Red of his dream to go to Mexico, Red says; Hope is a dangerous thing. It will drive a man insane, it has no place here. This shows how Red thought that hope was pointless and futile. This also shows how the prison could take away a man s hope; even turn him bitterly against the idea of it. It is only when Andy eventually makes his escape that the inmates realise how truly powerful hope is. When Red is released from prison and make his way to Mexico, he says; I hope the Pacific is as blue as it is in my dreams. I hope. This use of repetition shows the attitude ... • 24. The Enlightenment And The American Revolution The Enlightenment was the root of many of the ideas of the American Revolution. It was a movement that focused mostly on freedom of speech, equality, freedom of press, and religious tolerance. The American Revolution was the time period where America tried to gain its independence from England. They got influenced very much from many philosophers. That will be discussed throughout the essay. The Enlightenment ideas were the main influences for American Colonies to become their own nation. Some of the leaders of the American Revolution were influenced by Enlightenment ideas which are, freedom of speech, equality, freedom of press, and religious tolerance. American colonists did not have these rights, in result, they rebelled against England for independence. In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote about American s natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These ideas came from the Enlightenment, the ideals led towards the American Revolution soon after (Fisk). The American Revolution must be considered as an anticolonial war for independence, not only a war of liberation from overseas rule but a war for freedom. The American Revolution was a movement to fulfill aspirations to acquire more property (Morris, 3). Montesquieu believed that everything was made up of laws or rules that never changed. Hitler did a lot of things and he is mainly remembered for his atrocious actions toward the Jewish. One of the few things that he was responsible for, and is not much talked about today, is the Degenerate Art Exhibition. The Degenerate Art Exhibition displayed specific types of artwork, and I believe that the Still life of Aubergines would have been part of the exhibition for numerous reasons. Barron claims that before even Hitler came to power, Germans such ideas (4). First, Barron suggest that the formation the German empire gave to Germans, a strong sense of nationalism that manifested itself quite often as a belief in the natural superiority of the Aryan people (4). According to Barron Germans were highly influenced at that time, by Darwin s book The Descent of Man and his theory of evolution (4). The main reason why the book had such a huge impact on Germans mindsets was, as Barron explains, The year 1871 marked both the emergence of the German empire and the publication of Charles Darwin s The descent of man, a book later used to justify German racism (4). In the 6.3 magnitude Christchurch earthquake that occurred at 12.51pm on the 22nd of February 2011, the types of buildings that were the most damaged were houses and commercial buildings that were built in the 19th and early 20th century. The majority of these buildings that were damaged were ones that relied on single or double brick for their structure. This relates to how the bricks are placed on the house and whether there are two layers or one layer of brick. Buildings made of bricks and stones were damaged because they can t move with the earth and most of the bricks crack and fall off making the structure a lot less stable and more likely to collapse in an aftershock. Brick chimneys on the old wooden houses fell over and crashed through the roofs and caused a lot of damage. Stone buildings such as the Old Stone House were also badly damaged and had to be closed following the February 2011 earthquake. The most structural damage mainly occurred in houses that were made of heavy materials such as stones, bricks or concrete. This is because it is harder for these building materials to withstand strong shaking and to support their own weight when they begin to lose shape. They can t bounce back as easy once they have been forced in the other direction. This forces the buildings to fall outwards or collapse. A lot of damage occurred in houses and ... Most of the time, we choose not to put in the effort to get to know someone unless we need something from him or her or we put in the minimal effort necessary to keep the conversation from getting to awkward. The book calls this the uncertainty reduction theory. The uncertainty reduction phase has three steps to it. The entry phase, which is the time when a relationship is just beginning. The subjects are strangers and have never met before. The next phase is the personal phase. In this phase, the subjects of the relationship begin to communicate in more of a personal level. We began to learn new details about each other and communicate more frequently during and outside of school. I asked her to be my girlfriend in 2008, when I was in 8th grade and she had moved into high school. I think we were still in the personal stage for a while, because who knew if the relationship would last. Eventually, about a year later, I feel we moved into the exit phase. We both decided that we wanted to continue with the relationship and see where it went. I do no think that either of us would have though we would still be in the same relationship over seven years later. Another example of the uncertainty reduction theory is when I moved into the suites on campus my freshman year. I had no idea who I was moving in with. We often define communication as the act of talking to one another via different platforms, be it face to face, via emails or even through videos. Many people would know of this unfortunate incident, but not many would know that it was probably the cause of an ineffective communication. The incident goes as follows, In July of 1945, the allied leaders had a meeting in Potsdam and they submitted a stiffly worded declaration of surrender terms to the Japanese. These terms had included a statement to the effect that any negative answer would invite prompt and utter destruction. The allied leaders (Harry S Truman, Winston Churchill and Stalin) also stated that they hoped that Japan would agree to surrender unconditionally and prevent devastation of the Japanese homeland and that they patiently awaited Japan s answer. This was known as the Potsdam Declaration. The Japanese Premier at that time, Kantaro Suzuki answered using the Japanese word mokusatsu , which is derived from the word for silence . Yet, this word had a second meaning which also means not worthy of comment . In the heat of the moment, the meaning was thought to be the second one, which may be true as the Japanese were very prideful, as we can see from the Kamikaze spirit. To rather die than be captured. • 39. The Short Story Of Richard Van Camp A tragedy in its own right must evoke emotion and a response from the audience through effective use of several elements evident in Shakespeare s and Aristotle s style of tragic writing. The plot progression of a tragedy should be rather specific under the idea which leads, ultimately, to the downfall of the protagonist. Despite the sorrowful story behind Richard Van Camp s short story Mermaids, the exclusion of several core elements from both styles of writing prevent this piece from being classified a tragedy. Mermaids lacked the development of a tragic flaw in the main character, Torchy, and furthermore did not lead the character to their tragic demise, Van Camp also excluded the idea of isolating him over time and rather brought him closer to those around him to get over his inner conflict, which is unlike a tragedy. A central character in a tragic piece of writing should develop in a way where they are lead [ushered] to their demise due to a critical flaw, which is caused by the inability to solve an inner conflict. Torchy was found to be at a rather low point in his life evident by his use of drugs and his gambling issues. Despite these vices, he does not allow it to destroy him. His relationship with the young girl, Stephanie, who was neglected by her parents, allowed him to reflect on his past particularly after his brother s death. [M]y daddy s gone, she says... The researchers conducted the study to explore the relationships between different aspects of speech (formant frequencies, fundamental frequency, and segmentation patterns) and age and gender. Better understanding of these relationships would provide information that could be used to improve technology used for speech recognition, which is necessary because speech recognition technology often has trouble recognizing children s speech (p. 1455). In addition, the authors stated, a more chronologically detailed acoustic database (p. 1455) could provide important information regarding the relationships between developmental acoustic patterns and underlying anatomical and neuromuscular development (p. 1455). Two hundred and twenty nine male speakers and 207 female speakers in between the ages of five and 18 as well as 29 male speakers and 27 female speakers in between the ages of 25 and 50 participated in the study. • 48. Imaging Of Musculoskeletal Disorders And The Early 1900 s... Imaging of musculoskeletal disorders began in the early 1900 s with the invention and utilization of radiography and fluoroscopic equipment (McKinnis, 2014). Evolutions in imaging now allow for clearer digital recorded images of fluoroscopy, radiographs, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (McKinnis, 2014). From the beginning, imaging has not been an isolated or sole diagnostic tool. The clinician s expertise in the evaluation process, the comprehensive evaluation and assessment of the patient, documented and reported patient history, associated signs and symptoms, and the additional medical test results along with red flags must be taken into account when considering referral for imaging (Dutton, 2012; McKinnis, 2014). There are several clinical prediction rules and guidelines, which have been created to assist health care providers in managing the utilization and prevention of inappropriate imaging (Dutton, 2012; Gan, Harkey, Hemingway, Hughes, Duszak, 2016; Gidwani et al., 2016; McKinnis, 2014). Based on the aforementioned information, not all spinal patients will require or should receive spinal imaging. In researching material for this paper this writer could not help but read reports that indicate that the country is fairly well divided on this issue. The debate can go round and around and the answer to the question of legalizing same sex marriages is not as easy as it may seem. There are solid rebuttals to any supposition one makes on the issue, making the debate a lot more interesting than one might believe. In general there are several philosophical arguments against same sex marriage: The first claims that marriage is an innately reproductive union of two people and that same sex marriages innately lack the potential for any type of reproduction, therefore it is metaphysically and biologically impossible for homosexuals to become married to one another. Thus, same sex marriages should not occur. Critics of this line of reasoning would state that there is no one who would support the notion of not allowing infertile heterosexual couples or fertile heterosexual couples who do not plan to have children the right to marry one another. Thus, this argument is not valid as an explanation of why same sex marriages should not be allowed. However, the rebuttal to this counter argument would be that the sexual intercourse that takes place between either infertile heterosexual couples or heterosexual couples not desiring children is reproductive in kind. ... The Growing Concern on Food Safety There is growing concern about food safety and especially about inputs of pathogenic microorganisms with possible implications for human health and the environment [1]. Microbial activity is a primary mode of deterioration of many foods and is often responsible for the loss of quality and safety. Concern over pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms in foods is increasing due to the increase in outbreaks of foodborne disease [2]. It has been estimated that as many as 30% of people in the industrialized countries suffer from food borne diseases each year caused by microbes [3]. Food additives have been used for centuries in the food processing practices for several purposes including the prevention of microbial growth and increase in the food shelf lives [4]. Due to the excessive use of food preservatives which some of them are doubtful to be carcinogenic and teratogenic and also increasing consumer demand to natural foods with a long shelf life and without chemical preservatives, food producers trend to replace chemical preservatives with natural forms such as oils and herbal extracts as antibacterial additives [5, 6]. In the recent years, efforts have been devoted to find new antimicrobial materials from natural resources for food preservation [7]. It lays out the foundation of every Marine leader; it is a collection of the principles taught to all Marines. Our core values, and Marine leadership principles make up the bulk of the chapter. Leadership is what makes men take action against their most basic instinct of self preservation. Leadership is based not only on the Marine ethos, but also on certain elements of leadership philosophy. The elements rely on each other, and collectively they serve to help guide a Marine leader in decision making. These values must be reflected in a leaders action, otherwise the follower has no faith in the leader and the words become hollow and meaningless. As Marines, we are held to a higher standard then the rest of society because of the nature of our profession. Just because we carry arms and have an awesome amount of power, does not mean that we can do as we please. With the application of force comes a strict liability, requiring the individual ...
