Warning Signs Of The Sandy Hook Massacre
Screaming, shuffling, and urging... teachers ushered students to safety inside bathrooms and
classrooms after Adam Lanza shot the first bullet with his semi automatic, AR 15 assault rifle.
Lanza shot 20 students that day, after killing his mother earlier. Imagine if Lanza s community
had known the signs to look for. That massacre could have been prevented. Moved by the event, a
non profit appropriately named, Sandy Hook Promise, arose to educate the populous on the
warning signs of gun violence. To that aim, they created Evan a public service announcement
(PSA) that shocked the country. First, viewers see the story of a boy and girl s relationship
blossom. Then several days pass in the plot, when suddenly another character starts open fire...

Despite the small role of logos, the PSA successfully reached listeners; hence, Evan currently has 9
million views on YouTube. Making up for the lack of logos, the ethosand more importantly pathos,
persuades audiences to take a closer look at those around them. While one s personal drama may
seem vital at the moment, much like how the young couple in the video felt, reflection exposes
that the most significant duty of each human on earth is to care for one another. If only those
characters has seen the signs, if only you would look for the signs in your school, lives might have
been saved, including the soul of the

The Role of Women in Australia 1900-1941 Essay
YR 12 HISTORY AUSTRALIA 1901 1941 Aim: „«To describe the nature of the role, and
lives, of women in Australia before, during, and after World War One „«To identify, and
describe the extent of, the international influences on the role, and lives, of women in Australia
before, during and after World War One Australian women prior to World War One lived a life
that consisted of traditional female roles similar to those of their British and Irish relatives. Their
value in society was based on their ability to bear and raise children and maintain a home and
they were dependent on the financial support of their husbands. Families of 10 or 12 children

These female nurses provided medical help for the wounded soldiers at Gallipoli and also on the
Western Front. As most of the hospital stations were near the front line many nurses were
exposed to aerial bombs and shelling. They were expected to work in primitive conditions; some
hospitals were equipped for a mere 520 people yet held 2500 during the wartime. As a result of the
long hours and poor conditions many nurses suffered serious illnesses. A total of 2139 Australian
nurses served overseas and of these 25 died. Through enduring such adverse conditions nurses
proved extreme dedication towards the war effort and their country. As nurses were the only women
allowed to directly contribute to the war effort, the women who couldnВЎВ¦t serve sought to boost
morale, raise money and provide comfort for soldiers, especially those who were sick or wounded.
A particularly popular attempt to assist the soldiers was that through knitting. Some 600,000 socks
were knitted for the troops from NSW alone. Women all over the nation knitted socks and various
other items to send to the front line, many with personal notes of encouragement attached.
Additionally, ВЎВ§comfort boxesВЎВЁ were compiled containing various items the soldiers might

The Start Of A New Beginning
The Start of a New Beginning Civilization is a term well known by Historians, it is one of the
bases of understanding how things came to be. Western Civilization is considered the a turning
point in history. It was the beginning of something new that affected life as we know it today. I
however believe that the people of this time were more colonized rather than civilized. I say this
because of how we see it as how barbaric it was compared to how we live our lives. The way the
people came together to form a community and colonize one million years ago. To form laws
and codes of how to live and coincide with one another without havoc. Hammurabi s code to be
exact, this was a major stepping stone into a more civilized civilization, in a violent manner.
Hammurabi s code is a well known method for being vindictive. It was created to keep the people
in line, and if they were not they would be punished severly based on the crime. The beginning
known as Mesopotamia is where colonization and civilization truly became one. Early
Mesopotamia had very little structure, but for it s time it was remarkable. Some think that
Mesopotamia were mainly composed of Greeks due to the similarities that we have in common
today (Golden). In Mesopotamia the women were slaves, they were under the protection of their
fathers until they seemed fit for marriage which was usually after puberty. When this occurred the
father would sell his daughter to the highest bidder. This was quite a change from

Real Estate Easement Essay
In previous articles, we ve discussed easements or right of ways and how they are used. Generally
speaking, an easement or right of way grants one person or entity the right to use another person or
entity s property. As is obvious, this can come with a number of complications; particularly if the
situation is approached without the necessary information and knowledge regarding how to handle
the situation. So previous articles about how to handle an easement already in place are important,
but that s not the only important discussion when it comes to easements in southern California real
estate. What do you do when you need to create an easement?
Top 5 Methods of Creating Real Estate Easements:
1. Written Agreement Between the Two Parties... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Easement by Necessity Through Court Order In some instances, the court can designate an
easement out of necessity. For instance, if a piece of property exists that has no access to the public
roadway because it is surrounded by properties owned by others, they must be allowed to exit/enter
their own property.
3. A Deed Conveying Property Designating an Easement This often occurs when a landowner
wants to sell a portion of a larger piece of land. For instance, a land owner could sell the back 20
acres of their 50 acre piece of land. In order for the new owner to access public roadways from their
land, an easement would be created in the deed and a portion of the front acreage (still held by the
original owner) would be designated to be used for access.
4. Through Condemnation for the Public Good Local, state or federal government can condemn a
property or a portion of a property under eminent domain or order to utilize the land for a public
project as long as it is deemed as for the public good. In this instance, the current owner of the
land will often have dissenting views as to what is actually for the public good. In many cases, this
type of easement could occur in order for the completion of new highways,

The History of Microsoft Windows
Microsoft was co founded by Paul Allen and Bill Gates in 1975. Microsoft had a huge vision of
putting a computer on every desk top and in every home. In June 1980 IBM approached
Microsoft about a project called CHESS . They came up with a new operating system called MS
DOS this introduced a whole new language to the general public, since the system brought
difficulty to people to read they set out to find a better way to make an operating system. In 1982
1983 Microsoftbecomes the first to work on the new operating system the code name is interface
manager, but they then decide in 1983 on the name windows because it describes and fits the
description of a computer screen. It was said that skeptics called it vaporware. It took two years to
develop windows after it was thought up. In November of 1985 Microsoft ships out Windows 1.0,
with this software you were able to navigate around by using a mouse. This software was made for
serious PC users. In December of 1987 Windows 2.0 was released with desktop icons and expanded
memory. The Intel 286 processor was what windows 2.0 was created for and when Intel 386
processor was created the windows 386 was released.
In 1988 Microsoft becomes the largest software company based on sales. In 1990 windows 3.0 was
released and in 1992 windows 3.1 was released. At this time Windows software was installed with
floppy discs. With windows 3.0 you were able to use program file and program manager, you were

The High Five Analysis
A simple gesture of excitement and congratulations, a you did it! or way to go! are all
interpretations of the high five. The deemed creator of the high five, Glenn Burke, and his story is
told in one of ESPN s 30 for 30 segments, The High Five. In this documentary, the launch of one of
the most, if not the most understood gestures of appraisal and encouragement in sporting events is
unveiled. Nearing the end of the 1977 Dodger s baseballseason, Steve Garvey, Reggie Smith, Ron
Cey, and Dusty Baker made major league baseballhistory in being the first quartet of players to hit
thirty home runs in a season. That in itself is headline news worthy but what happened after Dusty
Baker finally hit his thirtieth homerun, in the final game... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Team performance is increased when it s members are supportive and they can rely on one
another. Burke s uplifting and energizing personality brought his team closer. He was a person
who built people up and supported them this was exemplified when he was asked if he created
the high five he said no, it was Dusty s accomplishment that brought it out of him. That is a
player who doesn t want to stand in the spotlight alone but be supportive of his team and lift
them up to ensure they are standing in the spotlight and sharing the glory. Burke to me seems
like a player who could hit the game winning run and still find a way to dim the light on him and
exemplify his team. The high five became a way for all players and fans to show excitement and
lift someone else up and let them have their moment. After accomplishing something that you have
been striving to accomplish there is no greater feeling than receiving a big high five of approval
from the people who have been alongside seeing the progress that you have made and how far you

The Effects Of Culture On Drinking Behavior
One of the concepts that I was able to understand better from the interview is the way that culture
view the use of alcohol. From what James described he was considered an adult in his house hold
and when he began to drink he viewed it as a natural rite of passage. His mother consumed alcohol
from time to time, but it was not out of control so he grew up with the cultural belief of his mother
which is that alcohol is a sign of being an adult. In America it is seen as something that provides
sexiness, maturity, sophistication, and status. My perception on culture and the effects that it has
on drinking behavior we completely changed. I understand that there are many components to
determine if a person is going down a path of addiction, but

My Life For A Small Group Program
It always seemed a bit clichГ© when people speak or write on specific events that change how
they viewed themselves and their world. At the surface, I often discard comments of people
who see just one event changing their lives for (typically) better or worse. Events are not alone,
but are part of a system of chances and choices made by ourselves or others. These choices come
together and form what we perceive as a singular event. Despite this rather cold and analytical
belief, I always secretly envied people who have these interventions in their everyday lives. The last
major event for me occurred a number of years ago when I was robbed of two people who I loved
and adored: my Grandparents. Since losing them, I have felt like a... Show more content on

Three times, I looked back to see what it was. The gorgeous bricks of the Wall stood in front of
me. After the final time, I just decided to stare at the Wall and then I felt the hands of my
Grandparents on my right shoulder. Through their touch I felt so much pain, stress, questions and
anger escape my body. I finished the prayer and sensed that something had shifted within me. My
friend finished his prayers and we began walking out of the complex. Right as we were leaving, I
saw a very important Jewish ritual being offered a meter or two away. It was the putting on of the
tefillin.
Something within me called to put on the tefillin. It is important to mention that the last time I
put tefillin on was before my Grandparent s deaths. I told my friend for us to quickly do it before
we left. While it was being wrapped on me, I felt the leather straps and the holiness seemingly
pouring onto me and began to smile. I could not help but laugh as every part of me knew that I
was having one of the events . My smile continued as everyone around discovered that the friend
had never put on tefillin before. As he was putting it on and reciting the prayers, I re read the
Shema. When both of us finished, we sang in joy of the friend s accomplishment.
The event was not finished. It continued the following night. A handful of us walked through
Jerusalem to the Old City. We stopped at the Chabad Centre before heading to the Wall. I looked

The Use Of Personal And Interpersonal Space
In order for a counselor to be effective in working with a wide range of clients, they must be
effective communicators. Communication involves not only verbal communication but also
nonverbal. Nonverbal communication can often send a stronger message then the actual words
spoken. It s important for counselors to remember that each culture and person for that matter, may
have their own interpretation of nonverbal communication. Counselors should keep in mind that
communicationrules and behaviors are not universal. Counselors who assume communication rules
are universal, risk causing unintentional harm to their clients(Sue Sue,2013).
Proxemics, refers to the use of personal and interpersonal space (Sue Sue, 2013, p.214). The
amount of space a person has between them and another communicates certain messages. This is
another area that counselors want to be cautious about making assumptions. There are no
universal rules when it comes to proxemics. For example, in the United States, people get very
uncomfortable when individuals are to close to their personal space. The exception to this rule, is
when the persons are involved in some kind of intimate retaliation (2013). However in Latin
cultures it is very common to stand close to people, especially when they are talking (2013).
Kinesics refers to body movement (Sue Sue, 2013, p.215) and include, posture, facial expression,
and eye contact. As counselors work with clients they want to be careful about making assumptions

Tilting Right, TV News Analysis
An article in the New York Times was featured on the front page of the May 13, 2017 edition. The
article, titled Tilting Right, TV News Titan Roils Its Staff, features a small statistic on the front
page portion of the text, stating that the Sinclair Broadcasting Group, owner of many television
stations in the US reportedly uses its stations to spew right wing conspiracy theories and reports,
apparently reaching 70% of American households. While this statistic seems frightening at first
sight, it may be misleading, as it does not information about certain factors, thereby bringing its
validity into question. The New York Times is widely considered to be a more liberal leaning
media source, and considering this political perspective is important... Show more content on

The article continues to explain the growing concern among journalists about Sinclair s actions,
thereby continuing on the path of creating fear amongst readers. While there is truth to fear
about the situation, the level of concern being created is more than it should be, possible
misleading some readers into fearing right wing indoctrination or right wing political takeovers,
as liberal audiences of the New York Times may be more willing to believe. The 70% statistic
used does not account for the fact that not all people who have access to the TV stations will
actually watch them. It is unlikely that all these people will actually view these right wing
segments on a day to day basis, as the article leads one to believe. The statistic does not account
for people who do not use their televisions on a daily basis, or do not actually watch the stations
screening the right wing stories. Te 70% does not account for the proportion of television stations
viewers have access to to the number of stations that have these segments. For example, the article
mentions that Sinclair Broadcasting Group owns around 200 TV stations. While this is a sizable
amount, many television plans have over one thousand stations, and many viewers may not even
look at these 200 stations. The article also does not mention whether all 200 stations are featured
on all of these 70% of households. It is very possible that many television sets of this 70% of
household may only include 10 Sinclair stations. This would mean that the probability of coming
across one of these stations is even smaller, but those 10 stations would still count as reaching an
American household, going towards the 70%

Essay On The Progressive Era
The Progressive Era was notable for being a time of social activism and political reform at the
turn of the twentieth century. It was a time of severe change in America and American society. The
progressives goal was to avail and improve American society by working towards equality.
Progressives shared feelings of hope about American citizens ability to improve social conditions,
by actively helping, both politically and morally, and ascertain social justice. During an age of mass
industrialization and urbanization, acquiring social justice was essential because with social justice
established, social control would naturally be achieved due to the contentment of citizens being
treated fairly. Progressive reformers wanted to improve equality among everyone, but they soon

1880-1920 s
Professors Bergland s main point about the 1880 1920 s was the fascination and exploration with
nature and death. In the poems that Professor Bergland showed us, Emily Dickson wrote about
nature and her thoughts on how nature affected the world and science. My understand of the period
from 1880 to1920 was that educationwas not mandatory for females. When females attended college
, they were taught science and math because it did not have a role in society. Males on the other
hand learned literature and politics because they would go on to graduate and have an active and
high role in society. At the college Dickson attended, Mount Holyoke, religion was heavily stressed.

Henry David Thoreau And Transcendentalism
Henry David Thoreau was a leading transcendentalist. He was most known for his essays, with the
major themes focusing on nature and government. His works weren t highly appreciated during his
lifetime, but as years went on they became very influential. He was one of the first
environmentalists, and he laid the groundwork for a lot of progressive movements. Henry David
Thoreauwas born on July 12, 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. In 1833 he started studying at
Harvard college, till 1837. He studied rhetoric, the classics, philosophy, mathematics, and
science. Thoreau didn t like the idea of traditional professions, so in 1835 he took a break from
Harvard to teach. When he went back to Harvard, he refused to pay the five dollar fee for his
diploma. After he graduated, he started teaching at a public school in Canton, Massachusetts. He
quit a few weeks after starting because he refused to use capital punishment on his students. In
1838, he and his brother, John, opened a grammar school. This school was extremely progressive
for its time; they would take nature walks and bring their students to local shops and businesses.
The school closed in 1842 when John died. Shortly after college, Thoreau met Ralph Waldo
Emerson. Emerson took a great interest in Thoreau and opened him up to amazing opportunities.
Emerson introduced him to some of the most influential people of the time; Ellery Channing,
Margaret Fuller, Bronson Alcott, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1842, Thoreau moved in

The Community Treatment Orders ( Cto )
The introduction of Community Treatment Orders (CTO) has raised much debate around the
issue of whether this is an ethical practice or not. This debate calls for a number of questions to
be answered. For starters, can unethical practice be justified if it is for the greater good? More
specifically, should the elimination of individuals rights be accepted if success is to be achieved
from these programs. In order to gain insight into answering these questions, Community Treatment
Orders need to be defined first. According to the Mental HealthAct , a Community Treatment Order
sets out terms under which a person must accept psychiatric drugs, therapy, and other services while
living in the community (Mental Health Act 2007). CTO s include... Show more content on

By doing so, they are given the opportunity for social inclusion and to be part of a community
(Lawson Smith et al, 2008). In addition, the fact that they are still in operation today supports the
idea that change is needed in society. From a political perspective, they are enforced by
governments in order to help those who are most vulnerable, to remedy discrimination, and protect
the general public (Russell, 2011). As wholehearted as these goals may be in theory, the fact
remains that the intended results are not being achieved and civil liberties are being infringed upon.
Those opposing the use of CTO s are influenced by three reasons to support their position. The first
reason deals with the current evidence base. For starters, international research literature has found
no strong evidence on the positive or negative effects of CTO s on three key outcomes. These
outcomes are hospital readmissions, length of hospital stay, and patients quality of life (Lawton
Smith et al, 2008) Furthermore, a 36 month study of 198 patients concluded that CTO s do not
prevent relapse and readmission of psychiatric inmates with severe and enduring mental illnesses .
The study showed that results were in line with the current national use (Rugkasa, Yeeles,
Koshiaris, Burns, 2016). Analysis of these results shows that there is no compelling reason for CTO
s to continue to exists, given the lack of improvement that they provide.

Role of Gender in the Book of Genesis and Theogony. Essay
The roles that men and women play tend to differ in different works of literature. The roles
depend on the culture and the context of a particular work of literature, and even the time the
work of literature was written. For instance the roles of gender will differ from African culture to
American culture, as well as from ancient America and Modern America. Old stories such as the
Book of Genesis and Theogony portray different roles men and men play. Most of these roles are
similar in both books, and a few are different.
From the Book of Genesis we can observe the male role of domination. In this book a man was
created before a woman and was given domination over all creations upon the earth. God said, Let

1: 5 10), God gave the same authority to Adam to name the leaving creatures that were Gods
creations. He even named the woman created from the bone of his rib (Gen. 2: 22 23). Also, the
command of not eating from the tree of life and the tree of knowledge was given to Adam without
the presence of woman (Gen. 2: 16 17), meaning the male had the important role of passing this
message to the female.
Males authority is also clearly visible in Theogony. In this text all major duties and decisions are
made by the male God (Zeus), while there are also goddesses who could have made those
decisions. Hesiod writes that, He [Zeus] has appointed their [Muses ] ordinances to the
immortals, well in each detail, and assigned them their privileges (Hesiod, pg 4). He further
explains that the kings were the ones that made important judgments and settled disputes
whenever the need to do so arises. Moreover, Hesiod tells that When he [king] goes among a
gathering, they seek his favour with conciliatory reverence, as if he was a God, and he stands out
among the crowd (Hesiod, pg. 5). This portrays a male as a superior being and a ruler.
The important role of female even in today s society is to be a mother and child bearer. This role
can be observed in the Book of Genesis. Eve gives birth to three sons and the role continues
throughout the text (Gen. 3: 1). And the females who could not conceive would pray to God to
give them the ability to conceive (Gen. 30:23)

Penicillin Essay
Penicillin was accidentally discovered at St. Mary s Hospital, London in 1929 by Dr. Alexander
Fleming. As test continued, Fleming began to realize that he was on the verge of a great discovery.
However, he still did not know the identity of the fungus, and had little knowledge of fungi. His
crude extractscould be diluted 1,000 times and still be effective in killing bacteria. After years of
working on penicillin and going nowhere, many of his co workers grew tired of hearing about it.
The first real test for penicillin came when a 48 year old police officernicked himself shaving. After
a time, Alexander s face became infected and he developed a temperature. When he was rushed to
the hospital, the doctors believed that he had only hours... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Penicillin brought about the biggest search in medical history. It was reasoned that if there was one
antibiotic in nature, there must be many more, and there were.
If anything should be taken off of the Basic s List, it should be Social Darwinism. Social
Darwinism is simply survival of the fittest. This a simple view, and is not practiced much very
often. Penicillin on the other hand, has saved thousands, if not millions of lives, and started its own
medical revolution to seek for new cures to other things as well.
World War II turning points are much more important than penicillin. If there were not any breaks
for the American troops, then there would have been many more lives lost in the war than needed.
Possibly, there would be more lives lost in the fighting than saved by penicillin in its fist two
decades of public use.
Penicillin has helped save many lives throughout the years. It has cured things like strep throat,
which many people have had in their lives, syphilis, and gonorrhea. It also sparked a new wave of

Reflection About My Practicum Experience
This portfolio is reaching its end and it is now time for me to start reflecting about my practicum
period. Last year was a great year and a challenging one as well.
When the practicum period started I was lost, I did not know where to begin and what to do and
it took me time to adapt to the new challenges I faced. Once I sat down and considered my
options I began searching for schools to do the practicum. The city I live in has many
disadvantages as far as education; on the one hand, English is not taught in kindergarten so I ended
up teaching in a Language School during the kindergarten period; on the other, there are not many
qualified English teachers and this resulted on very scarce feedback from the teachers who
observed my lessons.
As time went by, things did not get easier; it took me three months to be accepted in the primary
school because of some issues with the Ministerio de EducaciГіn . Luckily, I did not have such
problems in the secondary school.
This portfolio helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. As regards my
teaching skills is concerned, now that I re read all the lesson plans I made, I can say that I made
some progress. Firstly, I learn to create meaningful and effective contexts. As it can be seen in my
firsts lesson plans contexts always caused me problems. At first I considered that using a course
book was more than enough to create contexts, which is not the case. Course books are helpful

Ancient Egyptian Pyramids Architecture
The Ancient Egyptian pyramids are engineering marvels that continue to astonish both past and
modern day historians and scholars with its incredible architectural feats. Behind the magnificent
creations was a group that employed their knowledge of advanced mathematics and building
techniques to create such an impressive subject of wonder. The mystery involving the work needed
physically to produce this structural behemoth remains a popular topic of discussion between
historians and engineers who seek to unlock the secrets of the pyramids architecture. Arguments
have been made that different types of rollers, ramps, and even poles have been used to move the
material that the pyramids are made of. However, by using the process of... Show more content on

Moreover, the pyramids boasted several other astronomical and geographical equivalents in its
architecture: The Great Pyramid s sides were aligned with each cardinal direction, with the
North side facing true north with only 3/60th degree of error. There was also a possibility that
the pyramids could be used as a sort of astronomical calendar as well. The spring equinox was
marked when no shadow was cast by the Great Pyramid due to its latitude and angle

employed to lift, transport, and place the large limestone blocks that the pyramids were

sleds of cedar wood along oil or water dampened sand or rails (Baldridge 1). Other theories
discussed included the conjecture of John D. Bush (1977), who assumed that the blocks were
rolled using cut out circular segments. For the purpose of lifting the blocks, a complex system
of levers utilizing counterweights and ramps were most likely used (Baldridge 1996); however,
arguments can be made for the use of one large ramp wrapping around the Great Pyramid

construction of the pyramids have been made, a notable theory was found in an engineer s belief
that circular wedges surrounding the blocks were used

Quiet Time Isolation
Quiet time is very similar to time out but is different. When you use time out you remove a child
from a location and isolate them from the other children in the room so they can calm down. With
quiet time, instead of isolating them you sit the child near the caregiver. You still are making sure
that the childis removed from others so they can calm down but isn t completely isolated from the
other children. Like with time out, you still need to make sure the childcalms down and you talk
with the child about a different choice they could have made that is acceptable. This method is the
preferred method of guidance because it eliminates isolation but still provides the alone time the
child needs to calm down. Isolation can inappropriately scare

At first lets define what is an ethical behavior: Ethical behaviour is characterized by honesty
fairness and equity in interpersonal, and professional relationships, ethical business practices also
include assuring that the highest legal and moral standards are observed in your relationships with
the people in your business community.
As regards Bernard Madoff, the ethical issues involved in his case are: the betrayal, the lies and the

To become vertically integrated, a company trying to enter the strategic group would need to
acquire several companies in different areas of the entertainment industry. These acquisitions would
be highly capital intensive and very risky for a new entrant. Another barrier to entry is the product
differentiation in the strategic group. Each company in the strategic group has certain channels that
are considered premium channels. Cable providers are willing to pay more for these channels,
which they end up having to charge the end consumer more for. These premium channels
differentiate content providers from one another. The content providing business is a highly capital
intensive business. Therefore, the capital required to enter the strategic group and compete is
extremely high. To calculate the capital required for a new entrant, we first found the average
revenue of the strategic group (~$7.5 billion). We then assumed that a new entrant would have to
capture about a third of this average to even make an impact in the industry. Taking this assumption
into account, we figured that the new entrant would need about $2.5 billion in its first year of
operation. Using this revenue, we then calculated the first year expenses the new entrant would
incur. В•Expenses based upon 3 months (3/12): #61607;Total Expenses (90% of Revenue): $562.5

Believing in Magic: The Psychology of Superstition and The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking: How
Irrational Beliefs Keep Us Happy, Healthy, and Sane. Defined the word superstition, A superstition
is a belief or behavior that s inconsistent with conventional science and attributes functional mental
properties into non mental phenomenon. (L. 39 to 42) In other words, a superstition is doing
something to get a better outcome.
To start off, superstitions can make us feel like we are controlling our outcomes and that we are in
control of the situations, that we have no control over. They re maintained in part by a phenomenon
psychologists call the illusions of control. In certain circumstances, if you perform some action that
can t possibly affect the outcome in any real sense, you have the feeling that you have control and
that feels good better than just sitting and waiting. (L. 71 to 76) To simplify, superstitions help our
brains relax and increase the chances of getting a desired outcome. As a fact, the illusionary feeling
of control can strengthen the actual control we have over a situation.

Evaluating Performance Performance evaluations, when implemented properly, act as a tool for
improving employee productivity, team performance and individual development. They can serve
to raise self esteem, increase motivation, strengthen relationships and foster ongoing communication

and should remain a part of standard operating procedures, however many are beginning to disagree.
Current Trends
By the end of 2015, at least 30 of the Fortune 500 companies had stopped using performance

focus their development efforts.
Performance reviews also offer management the opportunity to recognize and address gaps in

offers employees feedback on how their performance can be improved, such as starting or stopping

Raising A Child Is A Good Or Bad Reaction
As most parents know, raising a child can be extremely difficult. However, raising a child who

trying for many different reasons. There are many things that these parents have to deal with that
most parents do not. One of the most difficult times for not only the parent of an LGBTQ child,
but for the kid as well, is when the child comes out. This topic is very important in the field of

The parents should be cautious and think through what to say to their child before speaking,
because anything said could have a big impact on the adolescent. One example of a negative
reaction an adolescent might get is the parents denying their child s sexuality. Some parents, as a
way of coping, will think that it is a stage that the child will grow out of, or that the child came out
just to get a reaction from the parents. In these cases, the son or daughter might feel the need to
come out a second time. Denes and Afifi (2014) found that nearly a quarter of the participants in
their study came out to their parents a second time. The reason most of the participants chose to
come out again was because their parents denied their sexuality. Most participants who received a
negative reaction to their coming out were more likely to come out again. This was because the
child wanted to assert their identities, and prove that this is whom the adolescent really is. The
child also wanted to share information with their parents about their LGBTQ lifestyle. The reaction
given by the parents can also have an effect on how the LGBTQ child sees others in this
community. D amico, Julien, Tremblay, and Chartrand (2015) found that the more the parents had
difficulties coming to terms with their child s sexual orientation, the more the adolescent expressed
negative views toward gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. The child internalized the parents prejudice

Effective and Ineffective Problem solvers
Good problem solvers have different approaches and characteristic as compared to non problem
solvers (Whimbey, 1982). The characteristics that I possess are:
Accuracy and double checking: As a good problem solver, I am concerned with accuracy. I always
check and recheck, the problem if necessary. I always reread instructions and avoid guessing. In
contrast, a poor problem solver is sloppy and inaccurate. They may misunderstand the problem or
the process of solving it. Most of the time, they lack the slow, step by step approach.
(Whimbey,1982.p.7).
Can do attitude: Simply expressed, as an effective problem solver, I see problems as
opportunities, a chance to learn something new, to grow, to succeed where others have failed, or
to prove that it can be done . Underlying this attitude is a deeply held conviction that, with
adequate preparation, the right answer will emerge. Good problem solvers believe that
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work(Thomas
Edison). Poor problem solvers will give up at first chance and are not willing to learn anything new.
There are characteristics that i feel I need to improve. These are:
Dismissal: While I agree I do have some good solving skills, I also tend to dismiss some problems
and leave without solving them. I am however trying to change the dismissal attitude when it comes
to facing some problems. For

In order to design such a building for seismological risks, preliminary research is done about the
geological conditions of the city, fault locations, and earthquake history. Three earthquakes were
chosen that occurred in the vicinity of the city, and their characteristics were analyzed, as were any
effects resulting from those quakes, including liquefaction, landslides, or settlement. At the
conclusion of this project, recommendations for the structure were provided in relation to the
seismic analysis of the area. The structure must follow any codes regarding seismic design, as well

Hart Crane s Influence On Make It New
Among the innumerable modernist poets that successfully encompass Ezra Pound s slogan,
Make It New, Hart Crane best embodies this mindset with his innovative poetry. However, Make
It New does not imply that the ideas must be completely original. Very well read, Crane and his
poetry were influenced by many, ranging from foreign writers, such as William Shakespeare and
Charles Baudelaire, to other writers of his time, such as T.S. Eliot. By merging already recognized
ideas of renowned writers along with his own creativity, Crane conveys a sense of familiarity,

To Brooklyn Bridge was directly inspired by T.S. Eliot s The Wasteland and Walt Whitman s
Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, but the poem itself does not contain words or phrases that directly
correlate to those specific poets and their respective poems. Instead, the overall atmosphere of
the poem may remind readers of Eliot and Whitman. First of all, once again according to the
anthology, To Brooklyn Bridge is a hopeful reply to The Wasteland, where Eliot writes of a
fractured world, a perspective Crane shares, but his response paints a more optimistic picture.
Crane accomplishes this by using the Brooklyn Bridge as its prime symbol... to restore meaning
and unity to a fragmented and dissonant modern world (Axelrod 626). The Bridge is a manmade
effort that is capable of connecting the fragmented world. This hope is also reminiscent of Whitman
s ideas of an idealistic and unified America. Yet, a more significant influence from Whitman is the
theme of repressed homosexuality that is present in the poem. With both poets being homosexual, it
is no surprise that Crane was influenced by Whitman. The second to last stanza

Gustave Courbet s Reclining Nude
In the Philadelphia Museum of Art are five paintings by Gustave Courbet; of all of these I found
Reclining Nude (1868, Oil on canvas, The Louis
Stern Collection, 63 81 20) the most interesting. It depicts a nude woman lying on the beach
beneath a billowing canopy. A dark, but tranquil sea is in the background. The sky is dark as if the
final rays of the sun were disappearing over the horizon. There are a few clouds in the sky, they are
dark but not threatening. The picture is very dark in general and there is no obvious light source.
The edges of the painting are so dark it is impossible to tell what the nude reclines against.

It is not covered enough, however, for one to believe she has any shame for appearing in so
public a place in such a position; this, too, would have been found scandalous in the 1860 s. Now,
however, compared to such displays of sexuality and nudity as found in magazines such as
Penthouse and Playgirl or X rated movies, the picture is perceived as a modest, proper display of
sexuality. Today there is nothing offensive about the woman s display of sexuality.
One other reason that the critics and public would have found this picture offensive is that to
them this is not a display of nudity, but a display of nakedness. The woman is perceived as
naked rather than nude, because she is not in a classical setting or an important person portrayed
in a classical setting. This is not a picture of a nude Venus rising from the sea foam or a nude
Psyche with her adoring Cupid. This woman is not even a rich patroness being portrayed in one of
the classical settings.
This woman could be any fair haired woman;whe is a common woman, most likely the artist s
mistress or even a prostitute. Her nudity is for sensual display, not for classical purposes, therefore
it was perceived as nakedness and therefore obscene.
Though the woman in combination with her surroundings may have been offensive, there is
nothing offensive about her surroundings alone. The setting is a beach at nightfall. In the

Thomas Robert Malthus was born in 1766 (course textbook, n. d.) in Surrey, England, as the sixth
son of a wealthy intellectual family and he died in 1834 (Weikard, n. d.).

This also puts a limit on the amount of procreation possible, but however, all species strive to
surpass these limitations (Malthus, p. 2). In this aspect, human beings are not any different from
plants or animals, but in contrast to them they do not only act out of instinct. Additionally, they use
their reasoning to determine whether they will be able to care sufficiently for their children
(Malthus, p. 2).
Malthus states that there are certain checks on population and points out that there is no society
without any check applied. An unchecked population increases in a geometrical ratio, what means
that it doubles itself every twenty five years. Instead, the available food does not increase
geometrically, but gradually diminishes, because of the limited amount of fertile land. In contrast to
the population, the agricultural production, under favourable circumstances, is able to only
increase in an arithmetical ratio (Malthus, p. 6). A gap between population growth and the amount
of food available rises. As a result, to further increase the food supply, it is necessary to improve
the quality of the soil (Malthus, p. 4). Malthus points out that there is still land which is not
cultivated, even in Europe, and that especially in this region it is possible to enhance the soil
quality due to the progress of the industrialization, but it will be gradually diminishing (Malthus, p.

different nations which included six that are largely Muslim nations. There are different restrictions
for each nation, however most include the restriction of immigration to America permanently; some

David Brooks s Our Sprawling Supersize Utopia
David Berreby who is known as the author of It Takes a Tribe, was born in France in 1958. He
was raised by an American mother and a Jewish father. Berreby talks about the lifestyle of being
a college student in gaining a respectable position in the hierarchy of a college tradition within
the club membership. David Berrebys analysis of us v s them brings an impact to all the
students because they feel like they need to find or join a group in which they belong to. As for
David Brooks, the author of Our Sprawling Supersize Utopia who was born in Toronto, Ontario.
Brooks was born and raised by his American citizen father in Canada. He made a claim on how
suburbs were sprawling and the lifestyles in this society are becoming complex for those people
who desire to expand their way of adapting and living in the different environment. Both authors
have the same similarities for advancing in a new way of living and as a group, people should
be addressed in fitting in a particular social society. As a human being, our ability to consider
something is extraordinary due to our needs and wants. Once people see that they ve been

A Sustainable Development
UNCC100 ASSESSMENT TASK 2
Mazin Aouf

Sustainable development has become each country s priority and to effectively achieve this growth
many countries use natural resources in production to comply with the consumers needs, at the
same time making sure that the future generations needs are also met (Repetto et al., 1989). Hence

caused chaos in the Timor Sea and its surrounding population immensely. On 21st August 2009
Australia witnessed one of its worst oil disasters, an oil and gas leak that occurred in the
Montara oil field in the Timor Sea. The leak occurred due to an explosion and it finally ended on
3rd November 2009. During the leak and even years after the issue of compensation still hung
above the company PTTEP Australasia (PTTEP AA). In this essay we will explore the incident
through the perspectives of PTTEP AA, the people of West Timor and the marine environment.
Henceforth we will come to the conclusion of how this ongoing issue can be best handled.
The Montara oil spill lasted 74 days and during that time the oil spill effected the an Indonesian
island s population, marine environment and caused reoccurring nightmares for PTTEP AA who
were trying to seal the oil leak. PTTEP AA had the duty to secure the safety of the workers at the
oil rig and

  • 2. Warning Signs Of The Sandy Hook Massacre Screaming, shuffling, and urging... teachers ushered students to safety inside bathrooms and classrooms after Adam Lanza shot the first bullet with his semi automatic, AR 15 assault rifle. Lanza shot 20 students that day, after killing his mother earlier. Imagine if Lanza s community had known the signs to look for. That massacre could have been prevented. Moved by the event, a non profit appropriately named, Sandy Hook Promise, arose to educate the populous on the warning signs of gun violence. To that aim, they created Evan a public service announcement (PSA) that shocked the country. First, viewers see the story of a boy and girl s relationship blossom. Then several days pass in the plot, when suddenly another character starts open fire... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Making up for the lack of logos, the ethosand more importantly pathos, persuades audiences to take a closer look at those around them. The Role of Women in Australia 1900-1941 Essay YR 12 HISTORY AUSTRALIA 1901 1941 Aim: „«To describe the nature of the role, and lives, of women in Australia before, during, and after World War One „«To identify, and describe the extent of, the international influences on the role, and lives, of women in Australia before, during and after World War One Australian women prior to World War One lived a life that consisted of traditional female roles similar to those of their British and Irish relatives. Their value in society was based on their ability to bear and raise children and maintain a home and they were dependent on the financial support of their husbands. These female nurses provided medical help for the wounded soldiers at Gallipoli and also on the Western Front. As most of the hospital stations were near the front line many nurses were exposed to aerial bombs and shelling. They were expected to work in primitive conditions; some hospitals were equipped for a mere 520 people yet held 2500 during the wartime. As a result of the long hours and poor conditions many nurses suffered serious illnesses. A total of 2139 Australian nurses served overseas and of these 25 died. Through enduring such adverse conditions nurses proved extreme dedication towards the war effort and their country. As nurses were the only women allowed to directly contribute to the war effort, the women who couldnВЎВ¦t serve sought to boost morale, raise money and provide comfort for soldiers, especially those who were sick or wounded. A particularly popular attempt to assist the soldiers was that through knitting. Some 600,000 socks were knitted for the troops from NSW alone. • 4. The Start Of A New Beginning The Start of a New Beginning Civilization is a term well known by Historians, it is one of the bases of understanding how things came to be. Western Civilization is considered the a turning point in history. It was the beginning of something new that affected life as we know it today. I however believe that the people of this time were more colonized rather than civilized. I say this because of how we see it as how barbaric it was compared to how we live our lives. The way the people came together to form a community and colonize one million years ago. To form laws and codes of how to live and coincide with one another without havoc. Hammurabi s code to be exact, this was a major stepping stone into a more civilized civilization, in a violent manner. Hammurabi s code is a well known method for being vindictive. It was created to keep the people in line, and if they were not they would be punished severly based on the crime. The beginning known as Mesopotamia is where colonization and civilization truly became one. Early Mesopotamia had very little structure, but for it s time it was remarkable. Some think that Mesopotamia were mainly composed of Greeks due to the similarities that we have in common today (Golden). • 5. Real Estate Easement Essay In previous articles, we ve discussed easements or right of ways and how they are used. Generally speaking, an easement or right of way grants one person or entity the right to use another person or entity s property. As is obvious, this can come with a number of complications; particularly if the situation is approached without the necessary information and knowledge regarding how to handle the situation. So previous articles about how to handle an easement already in place are important, but that s not the only important discussion when it comes to easements in southern California real estate. Easement by Necessity Through Court Order In some instances, the court can designate an easement out of necessity. For instance, if a piece of property exists that has no access to the public roadway because it is surrounded by properties owned by others, they must be allowed to exit/enter their own property. 3. A Deed Conveying Property Designating an Easement This often occurs when a landowner wants to sell a portion of a larger piece of land. For instance, a land owner could sell the back 20 acres of their 50 acre piece of land. In order for the new owner to access public roadways from their land, an easement would be created in the deed and a portion of the front acreage (still held by the original owner) would be designated to be used for access. 4. Through Condemnation for the Public Good Local, state or federal government can condemn a property or a portion of a property under eminent domain or order to utilize the land for a public project as long as it is deemed as for the public good. In this instance, the current owner of the land will often have dissenting views as to what is actually for the public good. In many cases, this type of easement could occur in order for the completion of new highways, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The deemed creator of the high five, Glenn Burke, and his story is told in one of ESPN s 30 for 30 segments, The High Five. In this documentary, the launch of one of the most, if not the most understood gestures of appraisal and encouragement in sporting events is unveiled. Nearing the end of the 1977 Dodger s baseballseason, Steve Garvey, Reggie Smith, Ron Cey, and Dusty Baker made major league baseballhistory in being the first quartet of players to hit thirty home runs in a season. From what James described he was considered an adult in his house hold and when he began to drink he viewed it as a natural rite of passage. His mother consumed alcohol from time to time, but it was not out of control so he grew up with the cultural belief of his mother which is that alcohol is a sign of being an adult. At the surface, I often discard comments of people who see just one event changing their lives for (typically) better or worse. Events are not alone, but are part of a system of chances and choices made by ourselves or others. These choices come together and form what we perceive as a singular event. Despite this rather cold and analytical belief, I always secretly envied people who have these interventions in their everyday lives. The last major event for me occurred a number of years ago when I was robbed of two people who I loved and adored: my Grandparents. Since losing them, I have felt like a... My friend finished his prayers and we began walking out of the complex. Right as we were leaving, I saw a very important Jewish ritual being offered a meter or two away. It was the putting on of the tefillin. Something within me called to put on the tefillin. It is important to mention that the last time I put tefillin on was before my Grandparent s deaths. I told my friend for us to quickly do it before we left. While it was being wrapped on me, I felt the leather straps and the holiness seemingly pouring onto me and began to smile. • 10. The Use Of Personal And Interpersonal Space In order for a counselor to be effective in working with a wide range of clients, they must be effective communicators. Communication involves not only verbal communication but also nonverbal. Nonverbal communication can often send a stronger message then the actual words spoken. It s important for counselors to remember that each culture and person for that matter, may have their own interpretation of nonverbal communication. Counselors should keep in mind that communicationrules and behaviors are not universal. Counselors who assume communication rules are universal, risk causing unintentional harm to their clients(Sue Sue,2013). Proxemics, refers to the use of personal and interpersonal space (Sue Sue, 2013, p.214). The amount of space a person has between them and another communicates certain messages. This is another area that counselors want to be cautious about making assumptions. There are no universal rules when it comes to proxemics. For example, in the United States, people get very uncomfortable when individuals are to close to their personal space. The exception to this rule, is when the persons are involved in some kind of intimate retaliation (2013). However in Latin cultures it is very common to stand close to people, especially when they are talking (2013). While there is truth to fear about the situation, the level of concern being created is more than it should be, possible misleading some readers into fearing right wing indoctrination or right wing political takeovers, as liberal audiences of the New York Times may be more willing to believe. The 70% statistic used does not account for the fact that not all people who have access to the TV stations will actually watch them. It is unlikely that all these people will actually view these right wing segments on a day to day basis, as the article leads one to believe. The statistic does not account for people who do not use their televisions on a daily basis, or do not actually watch the stations screening the right wing stories. Te 70% does not account for the proportion of television stations viewers have access to to the number of stations that have these segments. For example, the article mentions that Sinclair Broadcasting Group owns around 200 TV stations. While this is a sizable amount, many television plans have over one thousand stations, and many viewers may not even look at these 200 stations. The article also does not mention whether all 200 stations are featured on all of these 70% of households. It is very possible that many television sets of this 70% of household may only include 10 Sinclair stations. His works weren t highly appreciated during his lifetime, but as years went on they became very influential. He was one of the first environmentalists, and he laid the groundwork for a lot of progressive movements. Henry David Thoreauwas born on July 12, 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. In 1833 he started studying at Harvard college, till 1837. He studied rhetoric, the classics, philosophy, mathematics, and science. Thoreau didn t like the idea of traditional professions, so in 1835 he took a break from Harvard to teach. When he went back to Harvard, he refused to pay the five dollar fee for his diploma. In 1838, he and his brother, John, opened a grammar school. This school was extremely progressive for its time; they would take nature walks and bring their students to local shops and businesses. The school closed in 1842 when John died. Shortly after college, Thoreau met Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson took a great interest in Thoreau and opened him up to amazing opportunities. More specifically, should the elimination of individuals rights be accepted if success is to be achieved from these programs. In order to gain insight into answering these questions, Community Treatment Orders need to be defined first. In addition, the fact that they are still in operation today supports the idea that change is needed in society. From a political perspective, they are enforced by governments in order to help those who are most vulnerable, to remedy discrimination, and protect the general public (Russell, 2011). As wholehearted as these goals may be in theory, the fact remains that the intended results are not being achieved and civil liberties are being infringed upon. Those opposing the use of CTO s are influenced by three reasons to support their position. The first reason deals with the current evidence base. For starters, international research literature has found no strong evidence on the positive or negative effects of CTO s on three key outcomes. These outcomes are hospital readmissions, length of hospital stay, and patients quality of life (Lawton Smith et al, 2008) Furthermore, a 36 month study of 198 patients concluded that CTO s do not prevent relapse and readmission of psychiatric inmates with severe and enduring mental illnesses . The study showed that results were in line with the current national use (Rugkasa, Yeeles, Koshiaris, Burns, 2016). The roles depend on the culture and the context of a particular work of literature, and even the time the work of literature was written. For instance the roles of gender will differ from African culture to American culture, as well as from ancient America and Modern America. Old stories such as the Book of Genesis and Theogony portray different roles men and men play. Most of these roles are similar in both books, and a few are different. Males authority is also clearly visible in Theogony. In this text all major duties and decisions are made by the male God (Zeus), while there are also goddesses who could have made those decisions. Hesiod writes that, He [Zeus] has appointed their [Muses ] ordinances to the immortals, well in each detail, and assigned them their privileges (Hesiod, pg 4). Moreover, Hesiod tells that When he [king] goes among a gathering, they seek his favour with conciliatory reverence, as if he was a God, and he stands out among the crowd (Hesiod, pg. 5). This portrays a male as a superior being and a ruler. The important role of female even in today s society is to be a mother and child bearer. This role can be observed in the Book of Genesis. These acquisitions would be highly capital intensive and very risky for a new entrant. Another barrier to entry is the product differentiation in the strategic group. Each company in the strategic group has certain channels that are considered premium channels. Cable providers are willing to pay more for these channels, which they end up having to charge the end consumer more for. These premium channels differentiate content providers from one another. The content providing business is a highly capital intensive business. Therefore, the capital required to enter the strategic group and compete is extremely high. To calculate the capital required for a new entrant, we first found the average revenue of the strategic group (~$7.5 billion). We then assumed that a new entrant would have to capture about a third of this average to even make an impact in the industry. Taking this assumption into account, we figured that the new entrant would need about $2.5 billion in its first year of operation. Defined the word superstition, A superstition is a belief or behavior that s inconsistent with conventional science and attributes functional mental properties into non mental phenomenon. (L. 39 to 42) In other words, a superstition is doing something to get a better outcome. To start off, superstitions can make us feel like we are controlling our outcomes and that we are in control of the situations, that we have no control over. They re maintained in part by a phenomenon psychologists call the illusions of control. In certain circumstances, if you perform some action that can t possibly affect the outcome in any real sense, you have the feeling that you have control and that feels good better than just sitting and waiting. (L. 71 to 76) To simplify, superstitions help our brains relax and increase the chances of getting a desired outcome. Some parents, as a way of coping, will think that it is a stage that the child will grow out of, or that the child came out just to get a reaction from the parents. In these cases, the son or daughter might feel the need to come out a second time. Denes and Afifi (2014) found that nearly a quarter of the participants in their study came out to their parents a second time. The reason most of the participants chose to come out again was because their parents denied their sexuality. Most participants who received a negative reaction to their coming out were more likely to come out again. This was because the child wanted to assert their identities, and prove that this is whom the adolescent really is. The child also wanted to share information with their parents about their LGBTQ lifestyle. In this aspect, human beings are not any different from plants or animals, but in contrast to them they do not only act out of instinct. Additionally, they use their reasoning to determine whether they will be able to care sufficiently for their children (Malthus, p. 2). Malthus states that there are certain checks on population and points out that there is no society without any check applied. An unchecked population increases in a geometrical ratio, what means that it doubles itself every twenty five years. Instead, the available food does not increase geometrically, but gradually diminishes, because of the limited amount of fertile land. In contrast to the population, the agricultural production, under favourable circumstances, is able to only increase in an arithmetical ratio (Malthus, p. 6). A gap between population growth and the amount of food available rises. As a result, to further increase the food supply, it is necessary to improve the quality of the soil (Malthus, p. 4).
