entrants can use introductory low prices to attract buyers and build a customer base. 5 11 Pitfalls
of a Low Cost Provider Strategy ♦ Lowering selling prices results in gains that are smaller than
the increases in total costs, reducing profits rather than raising them. ♦ Relying on a cost

Diffusion Of Altruism Essay
This paper looks at the theories relevant to the diffusion of prosocial behavior as it spreads through
social media. Altruism is delineated from other types of prosocial behavior because it is directly
related to empathy. The two theories of motivation for prosocial behavior are the Empathy Altruism
Hypothesis and Social Exchange Theory. These two motivational states outline the paradox of
altruism, which infers that selfless behavior can provide benefits to those engaging in it. When
looking at the chasm in the Diffusion of Innovation, presented by Everett Rogers, these theories can
be applied in order to accelerate the diffusion across the chasm. Messages that elicit empathic
responses should target the innovators and early adopters. This... Show more content on

The first opinion lies in the Empathy Altruism Hypothesis. This hypothesis, created by Daniel
Batson, studies altruistic behaviors and links their production to empathic concern for others
(Batson, 2011). Batson (2011) would argue that prosocial behavior can be elicited from empathic
concern, whereas others have argued there are only self serving processes at work. The alternate
opinion comes from Social Exchange Theory, which applies economic principles to social
relationships (Miller, 2013). As Shari Miller describes in her article from the Salem Press
Encyclopedia, social exchanges happen because people make choices that create maximum benefits
and minimize personal disadvantages (Miller, 2013). When this theory is applied to prosocial
behavior as its primary motivation, the actions can quickly be reduced to social behavior instead.
The reductionist approach of Social Exchange spins the motivations for any social behavior as
purely self serving. While this may be true of some surface level prosocial behavior, there is still
the observation that it can be selflessly motivated. Empathy generated altruism falls directly
opposite of reward seeking prosocial behaviors. These two concepts create a polarization in
motivational states. The altruism paradox, is defined in the Salem Press Encyclopedia of Health
as the difference between prosocial behavior that is self serving and prosocial behavior that is

Sir Elton John Research Paper
Sir Elton John has come to terms with his mother after 9 year breakoff
Sir Elton John has said that finally he and his mother have reconciled and re established their
relationship after since had been at odds for nearly nine years.
Sir Elton said that he and his mother and Sheila Farebrother are back in touch after the time he
spent in intensive care with a bacterial infection he got in South America.

The mothers revealed that the reason why the mother and son were at odds and have it spoken since
2008 goes back to the argument they had over the mother refusing to ditch two men she knew.

Strangers On A Train
Strangers on a Train, directed by the well known Alfred Hitchcock, is a psychological thriller
produced in 1951. In brief, the film consists of two strangers who meet on a train: Guy Haines, a
young, handsome, and wealthy tennis star, and Bruno Anthony, a vile but yet charming and
convincing psychopath. Shortly after befriending the young tennis star, Bruno suggests his theory
that because they dislike someone greatly, he and Guy should swap murders and in that way
neither will be caught by the police and tried for murder. All this is established in the opening scene
in Strangers on the Train. This is one of the most important scenes in the entire film, as it identifies
the plot. It explains the reason why Hitchcock chose to title the film Strangers on the Train. More
importantly, the scene provides many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The opening scene of the film exemplifies the central themes of being a double and criss crossing
through the use of formal elements such as cinematography, mise en scene, and editing. The
opening scene of Strangers on a Train can be considered very unusual, but very fascinating for
the viewing audience. The opening scene begins with a long shot that portrays two different cabs
arriving at the train station and dropping off their two particular passengers. As the passengers
step out of their cabs, a low angled camera focuses on their feet, cutting from one person to the
next. The camera keeps cutting back and forth between the pairs of legs as the two characters
walk through the train station and to the train. This type of a filming is a match on action, which
splices two different views of the same action together at the same moment in the movement,
making it seem to continue uninterrupted. This part of the scene also uses a 180 degree rule as the
camera always shoots the feet from the same side. One pair of feet are walking to the left

Conformity In Tomboy And Pariah
The two films, Tomboy and Pariah both challenge the hegemonic models of gender conformity. To
begin with, in the film Tomboy, Alex is portrayed as a young girl, who enjoys being a saviour, a
strong independent woman who can fight dragons with a sword in her hand and save the princess
from ultimate disaster. Alex challenges the hegemonic model of genderby imagining herself as the
warrior; reason being is that in many or in fact almost all fairy tales, the malefigure ends up saving
the day from destruction. So for her to be the rescuer challenges the hegemonic femininity. Further
on, Alex is presumed to play basketball, hockey, and soccer and portrayed as someone who enjoys
watching boxing as it can be pictured in the beginning of the short

Sacrifice In The Military
Sacrifice is giving up something you like, in order to help someone else, without expecting
anything in return. Some things that you can sacrifice are: belongings, comfort, or even just
time. These can be used to help the needy, or just give comfort to someone who needs it. A
sacrifice is a way to show that you care about someone or something, and that you want to help
them. It could be something small, like going to see a friend who needs your help instead of
going to an activity you really want to do, or something big, like giving your life to serve in the
military.
There are many different types of sacrifice, be it time, money, physical possessions, or even just a
comfort. You can donate to charities that help those who need it. Everyday people make
sacrifices, even some they don t realize. One such sacrifice is helping someone do a job without
expecting pay: they don t have to help, and they sacrifice free time by helping. Another you give
to a food drive, you are sacrificing a possession, in order to help those who need it. When people
donate to a blood drive, they help people who might need it in the future by sacrificing the time to
go there. These are just a few of the types of sacrifice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you sacrifice, you can achieve goals, help the needy, improve a community, and more.
Through sacrifice, when we donated items for the food drive, we helped people that didn t have
enough food to be able to have some available to them. Another benefit is that when we sacrifice
our money to taxes, we help to improve the country, through improving our military to protect us,
building better roads, and more. Yet another example would be that when you sacrifice time to
help somebody perform a task, you are achieving a goal. Sacrifice can help people and places to

Bad Science Book Essay
Bad Science Book I have learned many new things from the reading of Bad Science. I have a
few of them that I will discuss because they caught my interest. To start off, I would like to talk
about the exploration of cosmetics in the book. Everything ranging from significance of
ingredients to its marketing is falsified. It is presented as a breakthrough innovation yet it is an
iteration based off of Vaseline. Scientists wanted to replicate Vaseline and remove the grease
associated with it. It is presented with terminology that does not exactly make sense once that
terminology is explained it is clear how nonsense it really was. For instance, the idea of skin
absorption is not correct at all. The idea of your skin absorbing moisture has been common for a
while. So when the author reveals this is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ingredients are listed with no explanation but the appearance or a scientific name adds credibility
and a sense of status to the cream. These big name ingredients are not appropriate for human use
at high doses or some of them do not do anything special. The cream companies use this
perception of scientific advancement to further sales and create an ideal image that has nothing
scientifically backing it. The basic features that a cream can be replicated at home provided
similar effects. The term moisturized is stretched to ensure a perceived benefit. I would like to
challenge this notion of creams. Personally I have a severe case of dry skin. In the water my
skin gets worse. I use a cream that prevents it from getting dry. It is a highly premium costing
cream. Much like the author states the description of ingredients is scientific names I have never
heard. I have tried regular creams and they have never been able to provide the necessary
moisture of my skin. What I would like to know is that would Vaseline provide the current results
the cream is yielding for me thanks to scientific innovation or am I being misled. The author does

under Captain John Mason, and Narragansett and Mohegan allies set fire to a Pequot fort near the
Mystic River. The fort only had two entrances, and anybody that tried to flee the fort was shot by
awaiting enemies. The only Pequots that survived were those who had followed their sachem
Sassacus in a raiding party outside the village. This attack on the fort almost entirely wiped out the
Pequot population and resulted in them eventually losing the war. As a result of this the 1638 treaty

absurd. As a result of this, public school teachers are now not even allowed to discuss religion in
the school, except for educational purposes. They are not to allowed to say one religion is bad, nor
are they allowed to say that their religion is better than others. This law still stands today.
8) July 16, 1939 Albert Eintstein sends his letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt urging him to explore
nuclear weaponry On July 16, 1939, at the insistence of Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner, physicist
Albert Einstein sent a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning the President of Nazi
Germany s scientific research of the atomic bomb. His letter would acknowledge Roosevelt of the
importance and the danger of this type of weapon in the hands of Adolf Hitler. Roosevelt
immediately created the Advisory Committee on Uranium. After some time had passed, Einstein
was forced to send another letter to Roosevelt because the government was not fully funding the
committee because LeГі SzilГЎrd and Eugene Wigner were both born outside of the U.S. and were
considered possible security risks. Roosevelt immediately ordered the government to give them the
needed funds, and this brought about the Manhattan Project. After realizing the bomb would likely
be used, Einstein regretted sending the letters to Roosevelt. Although a pacifist,

Convicts Vs Slavery In Australia
The experiences of slaves, free settlers and convicts differed greatly. Slaves and convicts were
similar; they had to do labour and had no freedom, whereas free settlers lived with freedom and
peace.
A slave is a person who was the legal property of another person. In this context, they were
Africans that were abducted from their homes and shipped to North America. Slaves were poorly
treated and physically abused. Both men and women were treated like animals. Slaves had to do
an obscene amount of labour, often to exhaustion and sometimes until death. They usually had to
do agricultural work such as picking cotton, harvesting sugar cane, planting and harvesting rice,
harvesting tobacco, growing and harvesting coffee, building railroads, weaving, carpentry,
washing clothes, cooking and more. They had no control of what they had to do, as they had to
obey their owners. The housing that slaves lived in was atrocious. Slaves usually had to make
their own homes. There were up to ten slaves per hut. Their beds were made from straw or old
rags. A quote from someone who has witnessed the cruelness of slavery: For black men and women,
slavery was an equally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

They travelled on horses and used oxen for transporting goods. In addition, there was no roads,

House Of The Red Fish Loyalty Quotes
In the story, House of the Red Fish Tomi s situations and what he has to go through everyday
teaches many about Tomi s loyalty to others, during the whole entire book. In the book he goes
through tough times but still shows care and helps others without thinking about himself first.
There is a substantial amount of evidence to support my reasonings from the book which will be
used to explain why Tomi is so loyal.
One word that will help explain Tomi s loyalty is the word Kind which Tomi show many times
throughout the book. Tomi s kindness towards other is a very important key evidence to why
Tomi s so loyal. What makes Tomi so kind is the fact that Tomi doesn t act rude to his friends and
he always sticks by their sides. This is clearly stated in the book and one evidence in the book to
prove this is in Chapter 10 page 49 it says For Tomi, I going be Japanese. which is pretty much
trying to say that Rico would be Japanese for Tomi s sake cause Rico sees Tomi as a good
trustworthy friend that he can trust. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What makes Tomi so responsible is that he is always looking for ways to help his familymake
money to live off on and is always keeping responsibilities and hiding and cleaning the family
katana in different location so people won t find it. A piece of evidence in the book to support
this piece of evidence is on page 8 it states I can quit school and get a job what this is saying is
that Tomi is willing to give up his education to help his family raise more money which comes to
the point that Tomi cares about others before himself which can be another form of loyalty. Then
Tomi trying to hide the Katana is loyal to his family because it s a family Katana thats suppose to
be cherished so by Tomi hiding it and keeping it safe till his Grandpa and Grandma come home is
a very loyal thing of Tomi to

Free-Will And Determinism
Free Will and Determinism is it an Illusion?
Determinism, libertarianism and compatibilism are three significantly different views on where
unaccountability might stop and where free will and moral responsibility begin. Determinism is the
strict opinion that every action and decision is the cause of an event, genetics or the environment
prior to that action. Quite the opposite is libertarianism, which happens to be the genuine belief in
free will as well as the denial of universal causation. Finally, deep self compatibilism meshes both
of these stand points together and introduces the idea that one s action can be free if it stems purely
out of personal, authentic desire. Since all three judgments have a backbone of convincing ... Show

Second, Silenus would agree that if something is caused it can never be free. Silenus is very
high on himself as he rarely ever takes Hench s threats seriously because he is intelligent enough
to understand that Hench feels responsible for anything that he does. This is partially because
Silenus is constantly reminding him that he isn t responsible for how his mind works and thus
can never be held accountable for any action that may blossem from his desires. Third, since
Silenus concludes that he is not responsible for what he is, free will and moral responsibility
must cease to exist in his case. Don t be silly Hench. Only human beings are responsible. I am
what I am, (Satyr, 218). The Satyr considers himself to be above human responsibility based on
both his pre determined genetic information, and also his environment when he s reduced to
cleaning his creator s lab. To add, all human acquaintances Silenus has had the displeasure of
meeting label him as an untrustworthy beast. By soaking up human behavior like a sponge,
Silenus discovers that people can be extremely selfish, so he decides it is ok to mock this behavior
in a very direct manner. Therefore, Silenus the Satyr and his determinist view that there are reasons
behind every action have even Hench convinced that he is in fact liable for all negative outcomes
that Silenus may initiate.

The Left Hand Of Darkness Feminist Essay
Science fiction plays an important part in feminism texts. According toTom Moylanпј€1986
пј‰
science fiction can serve as a playground for feminist considerations and criticism of gender,
sexuality, social roles and oppression, reproduction, patriarchy, and much more(p.30). Le Guin
agrees with this definition and states that pulling back from reality in order to see it better, is
perhaps the essential gesture of science fiction. Butler (2004) has the similar idea that fantasy is
what allows us to imagine ourselves and others otherwise (p.28). Two science fiction feminist

The leading character Simone de Beauvoir initiated one is not born but rather becomes a woman .
Based on the reading of de Beauvoir, Butler further argues a new concept that gender subsumes
sex which indicates that biological sex is also socially constructed . Butler(1986) forms her new
idea that becomes a woman is a process of constructing ourselves and it is a purpositive and
apropiative set of acts, the acquisition of a skill . For Butler (1990), women can never be and
gender is never a noun but a set of free floating attributes. Hence, gender is proved to be
performative(p.18 24). Her idea co relates with Nietzsche s view of gender that there is no gender
identity behind the expression of gender; that identity is performatively constituted by the
expression of one s gender(Butler, 1990, p.24 25). It seems to Butler that de Beauvoir defines
gender ambiguously because she misses the performative character of gender. Butler claims that
people need to understand the term woman as the site of permanent openness and resignifiability ,
which is different from de Beauvoir s view that women are subjects in

Today, I would like to bring up an issue that is prevalent to students lives. This issue arises
especially when students register and enroll in classes, only to find out that they re waitlisted. So
comes the long wait for the student who waits until his or her waitlist is lifted. During this time, it
is easy for miscommunication and confusion to arise for both the student and professor, and in the
midst of this chaotic scene are waitlisted discussion sections that the student may not know about.
The problem here in this situation is that waitlist positions in discussion sections are invisible to

One of the survey questions can ask would you want waitlist position visible for both student
professor access? This question can be familiar to a student who has dealt with an experience
where their waitlisted positions were not visible to them. Not only that, but student voices will
also give more value into fixing this issue because faculty members will realize that if many
students respond to this question, they will sense that this enrollment issue is a major concern and
will act to resolve this issue. Moreover, using surveys will help faculty members to realize other
students concerns with Cal Student Central. What is also crucial is noting the pros and cons of
fixing this enrollment issue. For pros, I believe fixing this issue will allow there to be better
communication between GSIs, professors, and students, transparency, and visibility. As for cons, I
don t see how there are any cons to solving this problem. However, I would like to input my opinion
that I do think that solving this problem will benefit rather than detrimentally impact people

The Space Race Determining Factor To Technologically...
After World War II ended, a new conflict started, known as the Cold War, this battle was between
the United States and the Soviet Union for superiority. Beginning in the late 1950s, space would be
another battleground for these superpowers. Not only were they going to battle on ground but also
in what seemed impossible at the time which was space. Due to this new competition many
technological advancements were made. So, to what extent was the space race the determining
factor to technologically improve space travel?
The US and Soviet Union were both making many technological advances within their countries
that made this race to space competitive. Competition is something the Soviet union and the US
have always had between them, and would continue to have throughout the Cold war. The
desperation to be ahead of one another really was a huge issue. They were not only competing to
be technologically advanced but they also wanted to improve their strategic advances towards
having control of one another. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Egyptian Pyramids Essay
In the deserts of Egypt lie the colossal remains of an ancient civilization. These enormous works of
human endeavor are the only member of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World that time has
passed down to us. These are, of course, the great pyramids of ancient Egypt. But these imposing
structures were not built to impress civilization millennia down the road. The pyramids in fact had
a purpose to the ancient Egyptians. While they seem very simple in nature, as they are simply four
sided pyramids with square bases, they had a meaning for those that had them built. Even by today
s standards, the pyramids of ancient Egyptwere an impressive feat of engineering, due to their

It was achievements such as these that gained Imhotep great respect among later Egyptians who
not only saw him as a great architect, but also a magician, astronomer, and the father of the art of
medicine (Edwards 35). Step pyramids are similar to the pyramids we know today, but instead of
being flat on all four sides, they have setbacks as they rise, giving the appearance of giant steps.
These step pyramids were not true pyramids, however, but by the second dynasty of the Old
Kingdom, true pyramids began to take shape. The now ruined pyramid of Meidum is an early
example of a true pyramid. While the ruined core of the superstructure is the only thing that
really remains of this pyramid, archaeologists have deduced that it was originally built as a step
pyramid, and then later converted to a true pyramid by building over the steps, thereby flattening
the sides (Edwards 74 77). However, the evolution of the true pyramid was not without its flaws.
One good example of this is the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. At the beginning of its existence, the
pyramid was supposed have a slope of 60 degrees. But when the pyramid was being built, cracks
began to develop in it, so the builders quickly compensated by giving the sides a shallower angle.
However, it appears they did not compensate enough, and another adjustment had to be

The Protest Without Hatred By Solomon Northup
The Protest without Hatred
12 years a slave is a book about the slavery in the pre Civil War South. It was written based on a
true story that happened to Solomon Northup who is also the author of the book. The story was a
violent protestation, but also full of love without any hatred of Black people, who were being
slaved for all their life. The Slavery was abolished in North America; however, it still existed in
the South America at that time. Solomon Northup, a Black citizen of New York City, was
kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1851. He was rescued at a Louisianan cotton plantation in
1853. After being freed, Solomon Northup wrote the book 12 years a slave to recount the years
of terrible abuses that he had been bearing under the Slavery. Northup s story was regarded as a
source of inspiration in Civil War which contributed in the democracy of United States as today. It
was also a piece of art as well as a work of human insight which awaked the human love, conscious
fight, dignity protection, and the freedom of man.
Twelve years are not long to people who have a freedom life; however, it is more than thousands
of years for people who are being enslaved. Among the stories of slavery in the world, 12 years a
slave was indeed an incomparable story. It was a real story which were written by the one who
had breathed both the air of freedom in Northern, and the taste of being enslaved in the Southern
America. The story was told in an order of time. Solomon, who had a

Theory of the Four Yugas Lasting four million three hundred twenty thousand years, are four ages
known as Yugas. The ancients understood time as a circle, not linear. Each age has distinct themes
and spiritual lessons. According to the Hinduism scriptures, all mortal beings are destined to pass
through four great epochs in every cycle of creation and destruction. The world has already been
through the first three and is currently passing through the fourth Yuga. It is believed that the world
will end in a great conflagration after the last Yuga. To some, this appears too unrealistic to be true

The people had all fallen prey to delusion and all pious acts had been swallowed by greed.
Scientists have predicted that by the end of this Yuga people will hardly be older than twenty
years and their only food will be meat. It s depressing to say that our society s actions are
progressively getting worse as we continue to live during each age. It s freighting to think of what
is going to happen in the future.
According to Hinduism.stackexchange.com, one cycle of all four Yugas is called a Maha Yuga,
and one thousand Maha Yugas make up one Kalpa. A Kalpa constitutes just one day of Brahma, the
creator god. After the day is over, Brahma goes to sleep, and then the night of Brahma commences.
This night is the time period when the physical universe, along heavens and hells are destroyed by
fire emanating from the mouth of Vishnu s serpent Adiseshan. Adiseshan is said to hold all the
planets of the universe on his hoods and to constantly sing the glories of the God Vishnu from all
his mouths. It is believe that after the disaster that Lord Brahma would recreate the universe and

The year 1789 was when Marcellin Champagnat was born. At this time, the outbreak of the French

Similarities Between France and Canada’s Health Care System
Many would agree that a worthy, controlled health system, above all, should essentially contribute
to good health. The responsibility of a health care system is that the organization of people,
institutions, and resources deliver the health care services required and meet the health needs of
focus populations. Another duty that the health care systems stimulate is the reduction of
inequality to race, gender, social status and religion. Each health care systemis different when
looking at specific countries across the world, however some countries are more similar than
others, such as France and Canada s health care system. These two countries have numerous
similarities when examining their health care systems, conversely that does not denote that both
France and Canada are just as equivalent as the other. When observing countless aspects, such as
longevity and infant mortality, as well as a lot of the inputs such as doctors or beds per capita, and
of course the total expenditure on health as a percentage of GDP over the year, it is seen that
France has a better and more enhanced health care system than Canada.
One major issue that differentiation France s health care system opposed to Canada s is the wait
times, French citizens wait minimal minutes compared to those in Canada. Canadians can t
overlook the reality of wait times when it comes to their health care system, it usually takes up to
months for diagnostic tests or MRIs, and for emergency care it can take up to

Evidence Based Practice Examples
In order for Evidenced based practice (EBP) to be successfully adopted and maintained, nurses
and other healthcare professionals realize that it has to be adopted by individual providers,
microsystems and system leaders, as well as policy makers. Federal, state, local, and other
regulatory bodies are necessary for EBP adoption. An example of this is the mark of excellence in
nursing used by the Magnet Recognition Program (Stevens, 2013). The development of evidenced
based practice is fueled by the increasing public and professional demand for accountability in
safety and quality improvement in healthcare (Stevens, 2013). An example of federal program that
has emerged because of EBP is Congress funding the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute
(PCORI) with the following mission: The PCORI helps people make informed healthcare decisions,
and improves healthcare delivery and outcomes, by producing and promoting high integrity,
evidence based information that comes from research guided by patients, caregivers and the
broader healthcare community (PCORI, 2013).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Misconception about EBP from older nurses not educated on EBP that are not computer literate
find using EBP searching tools too time consuming. This is a barrier to consistent use of EBP
among nurses (Melnyk, Fineout Overholt, Stillwell, and Williamson, 2010). Melnyk et.al (2010)
provide examples of this in practice such as: the use of Beta blockers in patients with tachycardia
and the level of head elevation with increased intracranial pressure. Another example is the
initiation of rapid response teams reducing the rates of in hospital cardiac arrests and unplanned
ICU admissions.

Women s Rights Of The Civil Rights Movement
Decades after the National Women s Party pushed for the passage of their proposed Equal Rights
Amendment, feminists of the 1960s and 70s rallied once again for this change in the Constitution.
The amendment, simply stating that, Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the
United States or any State on account of sex, quickly gained popularity among activists in the
1970s. This support was not surprising, as this decade was a time of great change and protest.
Feminist felt that just as African Americans were gaining civil rights, women, too, should be
considered as equals to their counterparts. Women Right s leaders such as Alice Paul and Gloria
Steinempushed for the passage of such major legislation. With support from Women s Right s
groups such as the National Organization of Women, the amendment quickly made its way to
Congress. The bill passed first in the House of Representatives in 1970, and then two years later, it
passed in the Senate. As all amendments are passed, the votes then continued into the states. In
order to be added to the constitution, the ERA needed to gain the support of thirty eight states.
Within one year, twenty two states ratified the amendment. The radical pace of the passage was
promising and activists were certain that in the seven year time span Congress allotted for state
ratification, the bill would be passed. Momentum slowed, however, when organized opposition
came from an unlikely source. Phyllis Schlafly led a

Frida Kahlo Self-Portrait With Monkey Essay
Self Portrait with Monkey: By Frida Kahlo
Self Portrait with Monkey made in the year of 1938 by Frida kahlo a Mexican artist who was
influence by the traumatized events that occur during her early life. Which were physical and
psychological tragic. Frida khalo used her personal tragic to create art and which her saying was
that she paint herself because it was what she knew best. Kahlos work was influence by tragic
event in which in her portrait Self Portrait with Monkey, it was made to show a living and soulful
being holding her by having his arm around her neck of a form of protection and who she

Her posing is of someone who seems lonely, incomplete and unsatisfied. The portrait is the
appearance more of a tomboy. We can see the background of the painting showing the a form of a
jungle with different hairy leaves and cactus. The painting has different textures, lines, and colors.
We can see a light green mixture with yellow and with some blue, green, and light gray, also the
cantus is painted in light gray with a white and slightly brown as it seems from viewing the
painting. The natural objects used by Frida Kahlo in most of her portrait, are the natural element as
we can see in the Self Portrait with a Monkey. She is wearing a collar and it seems to be made of
bamboo material. In the portrait with seeing a Monkey is facing forward and how the monkey
has his arm around her with so much care and protection. The monkey reflects an innocent child
holding on his mother, reflecting the viewers that he is love and that he feels security by her as
his main protection. Her painting is more of a personal portrait. The colors of use are vibrant
colors, but even though her colors used were not as dark, her self portrait seems more with a sad
appearance. I think in her life, there has been always an empty hole. Possibly reason were the
inability to bear children and her unstable relationship with Diego Rivera. To Frida Kahlo, he
was considered to be her soul mate, friend and her tutor in painting. Her emptiness was the need
be a woman in every sense of the word. Which is married, have children, and be hundred percent
in love and to be love with your partner. I just think this is how she used to feel. Her paintings
were most self portraits, which it shows that she was sad and unhappy. The painting her facial
expression is of someone that is lonely and depressed. To Frida Kahlo, her only time of distraction
from the pain and the loneliness was painting. Her only distraction and

The Invention of the Automobile Essay
Since the development of the steam engine people had been interested in creating self powered
vehicles, this manifested during the industrial revolution as the train. However, as time went on
people became interested in creating a vehicle that wasn t confined to tracks. The earliest attempts
were moderately successful but served little practical purpose. Automobiles first began to truly

Many other people continued the development and improvement of electric automobiles and for a
time electric automobiles were the preferred type of Automobile because of their quiet ride, quick
start up, and lack of pollution. In fact electric automobiles held the land speed record well into the
early 1900 s. However, they began to decline in the early 1900 s because of the increased
prevalence and efficiency of the internal combustion engine.
The invention and use of the internal combustion engine was a pivotal point in the history of the
automobile. The first attempt at an internal combustion engine was in 1673 by Christian Huygens,
using gunpowder as the fuel source, though it was basically worthless as you had to open the
engine up and put new gunpowder in it after every single stroke ( The Fuel Engine ). This lack of a
fuel for internal combustion engines sidelined its development for a couple hundred years. In 1860
Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir built the first effective internal combustion engine using natural gas
(Bottorff). The ignition of the gas would create a vacuum and the resulting pressure difference
between the vacuum and the atmosphere would drive the power stroke (Bottorff). This gas
atmospheric engine, as it is known, was an effective system capable generating 20hp, still it was
imperfect. It was further improved with the development

the tour guide does not overload the visitors with information and still retain the interest of those

At the end of the tour, the visitors can be asked to fill out a newsletter or email opt in about

Allegory in Young Goodman Brown Essay
Nathaniel Hawthorne s short story Young Goodman Brown is an excellent example of an
allegory. Allegories use events, characters or symbolism as a bizarre or abstract representation of
ideas in the story, and throughout Young Goodman Brown , Hawthorne uses a heavy amount of
symbolism, as well as his characters and the events of the story line to develop a religious allegory.
A large symbolic role is played by protagonist Goodman Brown s wife, Faith. Also, the main event
in the short story, Brown s journey into the forest, holds several major symbolic roles such as the

who knows just what giving the staff to Brown would do to him. In Bible, the serpent in the

Gay Marriage Should be Banned
1.Introduction
Gay marriage has been in hot debate for a while now. What once was shunned in almost every
culture and society is now creeping into our laws and customs as normal and even acceptable due
to the increase of radicals found in Anglo Saxon societies such as the US and UK. Fueled by the
recent revolutions of women and interracial groups, homosexuals (a group less than 1 percent of
the world s population), have finally taken a stand. Marriage has been a union of opposite sexes for
nearly 5000 years and now has come into such scrutiny that it has taken on the attention of the
Supreme Court. On April 28th, 2015, the Supreme Court began the case of Obergefell v. Hodge,
the dispute which would settle the legalization of gay marriage in the entire US. From such a case,
the question arises: Should gay marriage be legalized in the United States? After analyzing the
points on both sides of the feud, I came to the clear conclusion that the answer was no, gay
marriage should become and continue to be illegal in the United States.
2.Why Should we Ban Gay Marriage?
II.A.
Marriage was originally intended as the union of two people of opposite gender in order to create
a procreation flesh. The problem with this is that a gay marriage, or union of two males or two
females, would produce an entirely sterile couple who could not produce children with each other.
Although seemingly harmless, this

The Battle Of Team Desobry At The Town Of Noville
INTRODUCTION
This mission command analysis evaluates the battle of Team Desobry at the town of Noville,
Belgium. These events took place 18 19 December 1944, and later impacted the battle fought at
Bastogne during World War II. It is the goal of this review to discuss and analyze three mission
command principles displayed during this battle: Create shared understanding, exercise disciplined
initiative, and the acceptance of prudent risk. One of the main characters that took part in this story
was the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division. The commanding officer of this
element was Major William R. Desobry. During the events of World War II, the German forces
were trying to gain control of the Ardennes to cut off the allies supply lines in order to isolate
British forces from the American troops. A pivotal task for German forces to attain this goal was
to gain access and take control of the Belgian town of Bastogne. However, an important strategic
stepping stone to get there was Noville, which is just seven kilometers northeast of Bastogne. Two
main reasons made Noville such a critical location for the Germans: First, it had a junction of roads
that were important for displacement of German forces to the West. Second, it provided an
alternative road to access Bastogne from the north.1
DESCRIPTION OF THE BATTLE On 17 December, 1944, five German divisions were able to
push through the VIII Corps defensive line 100 miles east of Bastogne nullifying

Essay on William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying
Through the use of many characters monologues the narrative point of view presents an objective
view of what really happened.
This statement is not adequate in connection with William Faulkner s novel, As I Lay Dying.
Though many points of view are expressed through the use of interior monologue, even when
compiled, they cannot serve as an objective view of what really happened.
There are many monologues by many different people, often with opposing ideas and beliefs.
Together the novel is a collection of half truths, with each set of events shaped by what the current
narrator believes is truth. To each individual what they say and think, they consider reality, however

But then I realised I had been tricked by words, older than Anse or love, and that the same word
had tricked Anse too. This quote taken from Addies monologue reveals the untrustworthiness of
language and words. Originally she believed that the word love meant something but when she
became pregnant with Darl she learned that love didn t mean what the word meant and could in
fact be very deceiving. I knew that that word [love] was like the others: just a shape to fill a
lack. To Addie words lacks the power say what they mean and to give any other human being the
experience. Words like love, pride, fear and motherhood, she believes were all made by people who
had not experienced those things before. The space and emotions and ideas which language cannot
fill leaves room for different interpretations, thus through languages lack, an objective view is
unachievable.
Throughout the novel, each character has not only brought their own viewpoints, they have also
brought their own past experiences, accounts of the present and dreams of the future. In their
interior monologues, more so when they slip into stream of consciousness, they meld the past,
present and future and consequently view the occurrences through the coloured glass of their mind.
Everything they say, think and do is corrupted by their underlying belief system and previous
experiences, making it unfathomable that an objective account of events could be drawn from this

The As A Social Reform Writer Essay
I know you despise me; allow me to say, it is because you don t understand me. It is precisely
this which Gaskell, as a social reform writer, wishes to change about Society in Victorian
England. The very purpose of Gaskell s novel Mary Barton is to gauge an understanding
between classes and equally to heighten the sympathy felt among those composing the middle
and upper classes for those who fell within the realms of a lower social status. Gaskell was a
strong believer in the idea that social issues such as class division were a result of
misunderstanding and lack of communication, and so she nobly attempts to go about bridging
this gap and providing the platform to resolve this with her fiction. This close reading of a
passage in which John Barton, having experienced the loss of a wife and son, and since had
multiple failings in his attempt to improve workers rights, turns to opium to lessen his suffering,
will look to focus on Gaskell s methods and means, and what she is able to convey about the
working class struggle through her writing. Gaskell uses repetition of language in this extract in
order to convey the ceaseless and tiresome nature of the daily grind to which the working class
endured. This is evident in the phrasing same circumstances and same despair , the repetition of the
monosyllabic adjective same has a driving force on the language, creating the impression of a

Power point 11
If you are having trouble understanding this variable, you are exactly where you are supposed
to be. Hopefully, my explanation will help you! A mediating variable explains the relationship
between the two other variables. As an example, let s consider the relation between social class
(SES) and frequency of breast self exams (BSE). Age might be a moderator variable, in that the
relation between SES and BSE could be stronger for older women and less strong or nonexistent
for younger women. Education might be a mediator variable in that it explains why there is a
relation between SES and BSE. When you remove the effect of education, the relation between SES
and BSE disappears.
Power point 12
While researchers will never state that one variable caused another variable to occur, as there are
so many variables to consider in social science research.
However, we do use the term causal relationship or cause and effect relationship , where the cause
has to precede the effect and the relationship cannot be explained by any other factors that are being
considered.

long given, there are still many major social gaps between women and men. I Was a Skinny
Tomboy Kid by Alma Luz Villanueva rejects a patriarchal lifestyle and promotes feminism
because of it s tone, word choice, and layout. I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid is told in a very tense
tone. Phrases like fists clenched into tight balls , deep darkness of my sleep , and thin, stubborn
weed all contribute to a tense and almost enclosed feeling. However, the part that really promotes
feminismis where the tone seems to soften, and a kind of childlike innocence is shown. This
occurs when the speaker is talking about flying from roof to roof, when they re talking about their
mother, and at the end, when they are talking about waking up late at night. The latter two
particularly promote femism, because the attention of the reader is drawn to the parts of the poem
where the tone changes. This way, if the author promotes feminism at these specific parts, the
reader will catch onto it and accept it better.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It uses phrases like, grow up to be a woman , and be helpless like my mother , and that may seem
like it is actually promoting a patriarchal society. However, that is just how the speaker is seeing
things. The next few lines are the ones that truly show the feminism at this part of the poem. I
didn t realize the kind of guts it often took for her to just keep standing where she was. This line
seems to contradict the speakers earlier words of her mother being helpless. However, that is the
point. Choosing the word helpless but then contradicting that word with the kind of guts it often
took shows the reader that the speakers mother is strong because she is seen as helpless. She is
looked down upon by others, including her own daughter, but has the guts to keep on

The State Of The Wichita State University
Kansas has been ranked 17th in the nation for proportion of students taking on debt. Along with the
already high average, Kansas legislature has continued to make cuts on the budget of universities in
the state. With the cuts, universities in Kansas are forced to find income to replace the
deplenishing government funds. Previous attempts to solve this problem have been made, such as
raising tuition and the cost of programs. Students and parents alike are affected and concerned over
the rapidly increasing cost of this hometown school. Students come to Wichita State University for
not only the in state tuition but also to get a quality degree. With tuition on a rise due to Kansas
Legislature continuing to cut general funds to Wichita State University, the school must search
for revenue else where. The loss of potential exposure and revenue of Wichita State University
can be solved by the recreation of the Wichita State Football team. With millennial already
consisting of the highest amount of people out of work in a given generation according to a
study done by USA Today; students and parents have reason to be concerned. If the price of the
college continues to rise, those who are trying to face the obstacle of getting a quality education
without the out of state cost will be forced to search for an education elsewhere, if not go out of
state entirely. This problem is solvable as athletics for most universities makes the college
thousands. For example, the University of

Mark Twain s Writing
Mark Twain would write facing a wall so he would not get distracted by the stuff around him.
Mark Twain was a very social person who loved to be around people, and he used his personal
experiences when writing his books. Twain also allows his emotions at the time dictate his writing,
for example when his daughter died his writings became very negative and dark.
First and foremost Mark Twainwas a very emotional writer. Twain arguably wrote his best pieces
during the earlier part of his career, because he enjoyed writing and he was in a good place. After
sometime he started to write for profit because most of his investments were failing during this time
he was losing a substantial amount of money. Things got worse when his wife and daughter

Ron Mueck Art Analysis
Ron Mueck. Wildman . A pale, tall figure looms over all who are in its presence, overwhelming
and shockingly real. The Giant, Wildman , a huge modal of a man, is nude, this nakedness,
displayed for all to see. This ultimate exposure is a symbol to modern culture as one of ultimate
indecency and of vulnerability. He sits on a simple, sturdy wooden stool. His pose is rigid, his
knuckles are tightened and white as he grips his seat, his eyes are wide with fear, accusing the
society that has placed him on this pedestal. Upon his head, a thick mane of curly hair sits,
entwining with his bush like un kept beard with greying strands throughout, reaching past his
shoulders and ending midway down his chest. The majority of his body... Show more content on

His legs are brought up to chest height, one leans against the wall with the rest of the right side
of his body. His head rests on a closed hand, disappearing behind the head and concealing the
right ear. The elbow is supported by the right knee of one of his folded legs. His other hand rests
in the crook of the right arm, the elbow of this arm, supported by the left knee. His round
stomach is gently indented by the thighs that are pressed against it, his navel protrudes from the
smoothness of the surrounding belly. Between the stomach and private area is a shadowed fold
where the belly meets the lower body. The toes of his large feet are slightly bent inward, with
only the largest toes remaining flat against the ground. His skin tone is pale, with slight pink
discoloration in the usual places, such as the area underneath the nose, natural blush of the cheeks
and ears. The added freckles and more slight facial discolorations create a perfected reality
simulation. His eyes, partly shadowed by the overhanging brow are turned to the left drawn to
something in the distance. His face is creased with the lines of age, more heavily indented around
the main facial features, then fading into thinner lines as they move away from them. Upon his face
is a complicated expression, one which be interpreted as frustration or anger, for the brow is slightly
furrowed and one side his mouth is upturned with the impression of the hand that supports the face.

The Invention Of Lightning Rod
When the only tool you have is a hammer, all problems begin to resemble nails (Abraham
Maslow). How might this apply to ways of knowing, as tools, in the pursuit of knowledge? It is
possible that if we do not use Ways of Knowing in a too contracted and consistent way, it may
limit the expanse and form of knowledge we are able to acquire. When attempting to acquire
knowledge, one must have assets that will assist the process of solving issues. To a certain
degree, Ways of Knowing are not sufficient tools in the process of acquiring knowledge that will
assist one in solving problems because too much information comes with each Way of Knowing.
Areas of Knowledge such as human sciences and history can aid the focus of the Ways of Knowing
reason and perceptionwhere you can only acquire relevant information necessary to solve problems.
It can be said that originally technology was invented to improve the lives of the human race. For
instance, the invention of lightning rod in the year 1752 where Benjamin Franklin s electricity
experiments lead him to a valuable application the lightning rod, which when placed at the apex of
a barn, church steeple, or other structure, conducts lightning bolts harmlessly into the ground
(PBS). Although technology is not a reality for everyone in the world, for instance, the Amish, it
can be said that technology has improved quality of life for many. Benjamin Franklin s discovery
of electricity has led to not only enhanced methods of

Symbolism In The Cellist Of Sarajevo
Ossie Davis once said, Any form of art is a form of power; it has an impact, it can affect change,
it can not only move us, it makes us move . Similarly, The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
tells the story of how three individuals Arrow, Dragan and Kenan suffering from the unrelenting
and ruthlessness of war are impacted by one musician s art. All three characters suffer from the war
in different ways, but the art in the form of musicfinds a way to connect them all. Galloway s novel
illustrates that art helps lessen the suffering of those facing the brutality of war as the cellist s
music provides healing of the spirit, mind, and body. The cellist s music provides hope and
inspiration to the people of Sarajevo that they will be able... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Arrow s supervisor Nermin takes her to listen to the cellist as her latest assignment will be to
protect him. Listening to the cellist s music elicits a powerful response, She leans back into the
wall. She s no longer there. Her mother is lifting her up, spinning her around and laughing (75).
The cellist s music allows her to be taken away from her daily battle with the men on the hills to
a time when she didn t have to kill people and live with constant death and destruction. Arrow
gets emotional comfort as she is able to remember a moment of her childhood when she was
happy and the war had not taken her family away. Arrow s reminiscing about life before the war
gives her emotional endurance as she gets a piece of a time of happiness to cling on to during
her daily battles. The memory of a time before the war aids in reducing Arrow s suffering as she
is taken away from the torture of the battlefield. Additionally, it also helps to heal her mind as she
reminded of a time when she was happy and consumed with hatred. Moreover, the cellist s music
transports the people of Sarajevo to a future of comfort and happiness. While listening to the cellist
play his music, Kenan is transported to a dream sequence, Kenan will look at his wife, and then
his and younger daughter and he will know how happy he is and none of this will

How Did Israel s Food Rations Contribute To The Creation...
THE DIVISION OF ISRAEL
Under the reign of Solomon, Israel reached great economic and political heights along with its
security and prosperity. Solomon was renowned for his wisdom, wealth and building projects, but
with these projects came heavy taxes and harsh labour on his people. After his death, the kingdom
was divided into two separate kingdoms, north and south. The biblical record accounts for the
division as a consequence for him staying from God, but his tax and labour laws and new
administrative districts also lead to friction within his people. The immature leader that followed
him amplified this friction.
One of the contributing factors to the division was the heavy tax imposed on the people. This
came in the form of food rations for both the Kings court. The writer of kings records the
massive daily provisions of the king s palace, which included milled flour and livestock. The 12
new administrative provided these rations monthly. This caused major angst within the country as
Judah was excluded from providing rations. Along with providing rations for Solomon, the people
had to supply wheat and olive oil for the King Hiram of Tyre, who provided timber for the Temple
of the Lord. These heavy taxes cause an extensive burden of the realm and caused major fractures
on the kingdom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This caused discontent amongst the Israelites and contributed to the division of the kingdom. These
districts ignored the traditional boundaries created by Moses. The new districts all Israel didn t
include Judah, which showed how Judah and Israel were regarded as two separate entities by the
royal administration (Ahroni). This meant Judah was excluded from the mandatory tax asll citizens
had to pay for being part of all Israel . These new districts and the administration added tension to
an already fractured

Rise Of The Roman Empire Essay
The main cause of the newly established European continent was due to the rise of Christianity.
The Romans had a vast empire that stretched far and beyond into Europe but as soon as other
forces gained power the Roman Empire started to collapse. The intrusion of the Germanic tribes and
the rise of Christianity caused the western part of the Roman Empireto malfunction. Due to the
Roman Empire s large state the cost of building defenses rose to an exceeding number which put
them in economic vulnerability. The rise of Islam pushed Romans back toward the Germanic Tribes
which also turned out to be unfortunate because the Germans started to pave their way into the
Empire. The animosity towards Christianity and culture change, caused massive refines within the
Roman Empire.
During Constantine s reign as emperor of Rome he endured much difficulty organizing the different
belief systems in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bishops of Rome, monks, and Monasteries led the way into the newly reformed Europe. The
number of bishops dramatically rose to a new high and Christianity officially became the primary
religion. The Roman people and the Germanic tribes differed heavily mostly because of their views
on politics and religion. The Ostrogoths spoke a different language than the native population, and
their appearance and dress were different. (Dutton pg. 186), which shows that both the Romans and
the Ostrogoths did not meet on terms well. The Orthodox Churches of the Roman Empire were not
dismantled instead new churches were being built to satisfy both the Arians and the Orthodox. The
bishops dealt with the change by becoming leaders of the church and becoming closely tied with
the kings of the new regime. It was a difficult time for the Roman people but the Orthodox churches
had no difficulty in keeping the churches running at a full

In addition to that, one of the most important side effects is that working children may
experience physical harm in a number of ways. These include an increased risk of accidents;
children and young people often work in unregulated environments where little attention is paid
to safety. Working children often experience violence in the workplace from adult staff and
managers. Children and young people working in the street are also at risk of physical violence
from police officers and other authority figures. Risk of illness from poor hygiene and exposure to
bad weather can also be witnessed. Therefore, child labor involves the following characteristics: it
violates a nation s minimum age laws, involves intolerable abuse, such as child slavery, child
trafficking, debt bondage, forced labor, or illicit activities, prevents children from going to school,
and uses children to undermine labor standards (December, 2007). Child labor can also be
developmentally, emotionally, and physically abusive. Child workers are more vulnerable than
adult workers, leaving them at risk for exploitation, dangerous and abusive conditions. In many
parts of the world, it too often involves confinement, bondage, and forced labor; it frequently
involves dangerous and unhealthy working conditions. Children work longer hours have lower
pays than adults. Some children are sold into labor

Nitrogen, Carbon and Phosphorus Cycles Essay
Nitrogen, Carbon and Phosphorus Cycles
The carbon cycle deals with the interaction of carbon between living organisms and the nonliving
environment. This cycle is a process through which all carbon rotates. The main result of the
carbon cycle is to serve as a great natural recycler of carbon atoms.
The cycle works in a very basic way. First, carbon is taken from carbon dioxide found in the air.
Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere and use it, combined with water they get from the soil, to make substances they need
for growth. The carbon is then mixed with water. Carbon dioxide is then formed into sugar
(glucose). The process of photosynthesis incorporates the carbon atoms ... Show more content on

Carbon dioxide is very important in the atmosphere, however only in moderation. For centuries
humans have been burning coal, oil, and fossil fuels therefore releasing tons of carbon into the
air. The problem with this is that this can cause a problem known as global warming. This is a
major climate problem, which has series results on people and the environment. The result on
people can be very deadly. Too much carbon in the air can cause cancer.
The nitrogen cycle is extremely important. This is because of the importance of nitrogen itself.
Nitrogen is a basic element of life. It also makes up 78 percent of the Earth s atmosphere. It forms
an essential part of amino acids (which make up proteins) and DNA. Nitrogen is essential for all
living cells. The nitrogen cycle consists of 5 steps. First the basic element nitrogen in converted to
ammonia. This process is called nitrogen fixation. This process is done by nitrogen fixing bacteria.
Then the ammonia gets converted to nitrate. This process, called nitrification, is done by soil
bacteria. Assimilation is the third step. Here the ammonia and the nitrate are absorbed by plants.
Ammonification converts the nitrogen into ammonia. This process is done by ammonifying
bacteria. The final step is denitrification. Here the nitrate is converted back to nitrogen. Denitrifying
bacteria aid in this process.
Like all other elements, nitrogen is very important in life but in moderation. We sometimes cause an

  • 3. Diffusion Of Altruism Essay This paper looks at the theories relevant to the diffusion of prosocial behavior as it spreads through social media. Altruism is delineated from other types of prosocial behavior because it is directly related to empathy. The two theories of motivation for prosocial behavior are the Empathy Altruism Hypothesis and Social Exchange Theory. These two motivational states outline the paradox of altruism, which infers that selfless behavior can provide benefits to those engaging in it. When looking at the chasm in the Diffusion of Innovation, presented by Everett Rogers, these theories can be applied in order to accelerate the diffusion across the chasm. Messages that elicit empathic responses should target the innovators and early adopters. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first opinion lies in the Empathy Altruism Hypothesis. This hypothesis, created by Daniel Batson, studies altruistic behaviors and links their production to empathic concern for others (Batson, 2011). Batson (2011) would argue that prosocial behavior can be elicited from empathic concern, whereas others have argued there are only self serving processes at work. The alternate opinion comes from Social Exchange Theory, which applies economic principles to social relationships (Miller, 2013). As Shari Miller describes in her article from the Salem Press Encyclopedia, social exchanges happen because people make choices that create maximum benefits and minimize personal disadvantages (Miller, 2013). When this theory is applied to prosocial behavior as its primary motivation, the actions can quickly be reduced to social behavior instead. The reductionist approach of Social Exchange spins the motivations for any social behavior as purely self serving. While this may be true of some surface level prosocial behavior, there is still the observation that it can be selflessly motivated. Empathy generated altruism falls directly opposite of reward seeking prosocial behaviors. These two concepts create a polarization in motivational states. The altruism paradox, is defined in the Salem Press Encyclopedia of Health as the difference between prosocial behavior that is self serving and prosocial behavior that is ... • 5. Strangers On A Train Strangers on a Train, directed by the well known Alfred Hitchcock, is a psychological thriller produced in 1951. In brief, the film consists of two strangers who meet on a train: Guy Haines, a young, handsome, and wealthy tennis star, and Bruno Anthony, a vile but yet charming and convincing psychopath. Shortly after befriending the young tennis star, Bruno suggests his theory that because they dislike someone greatly, he and Guy should swap murders and in that way neither will be caught by the police and tried for murder. All this is established in the opening scene in Strangers on the Train. This is one of the most important scenes in the entire film, as it identifies the plot. It explains the reason why Hitchcock chose to title the film Strangers on the Train. More importantly, the scene provides many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The opening scene of the film exemplifies the central themes of being a double and criss crossing through the use of formal elements such as cinematography, mise en scene, and editing. The opening scene of Strangers on a Train can be considered very unusual, but very fascinating for the viewing audience. The opening scene begins with a long shot that portrays two different cabs arriving at the train station and dropping off their two particular passengers. As the passengers step out of their cabs, a low angled camera focuses on their feet, cutting from one person to the next. The camera keeps cutting back and forth between the pairs of legs as the two characters walk through the train station and to the train. This type of a filming is a match on action, which splices two different views of the same action together at the same moment in the movement, making it seem to continue uninterrupted. This part of the scene also uses a 180 degree rule as the camera always shoots the feet from the same side. One pair of feet are walking to the left ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To begin with, in the film Tomboy, Alex is portrayed as a young girl, who enjoys being a saviour, a strong independent woman who can fight dragons with a sword in her hand and save the princess from ultimate disaster. Alex challenges the hegemonic model of genderby imagining herself as the warrior; reason being is that in many or in fact almost all fairy tales, the malefigure ends up saving the day from destruction. Some things that you can sacrifice are: belongings, comfort, or even just time. These can be used to help the needy, or just give comfort to someone who needs it. A sacrifice is a way to show that you care about someone or something, and that you want to help them. It could be something small, like going to see a friend who needs your help instead of going to an activity you really want to do, or something big, like giving your life to serve in the military. There are many different types of sacrifice, be it time, money, physical possessions, or even just a comfort. You can donate to charities that help those who need it. Everyday people make sacrifices, even some they don t realize. One such sacrifice is helping someone do a job without expecting pay: they don t have to help, and they sacrifice free time by helping. Another you give to a food drive, you are sacrificing a possession, in order to help those who need it. To start off, I would like to talk about the exploration of cosmetics in the book. Everything ranging from significance of ingredients to its marketing is falsified. It is presented as a breakthrough innovation yet it is an iteration based off of Vaseline. Scientists wanted to replicate Vaseline and remove the grease associated with it. It is presented with terminology that does not exactly make sense once that terminology is explained it is clear how nonsense it really was. The basic features that a cream can be replicated at home provided similar effects. The term moisturized is stretched to ensure a perceived benefit. I would like to challenge this notion of creams. Personally I have a severe case of dry skin. In the water my skin gets worse. I use a cream that prevents it from getting dry. It is a highly premium costing cream. Much like the author states the description of ingredients is scientific names I have never heard. Slaves and convicts were similar; they had to do labour and had no freedom, whereas free settlers lived with freedom and peace. A slave is a person who was the legal property of another person. In this context, they were Africans that were abducted from their homes and shipped to North America. Slaves were poorly treated and physically abused. Both men and women were treated like animals. Slaves had to do an obscene amount of labour, often to exhaustion and sometimes until death. They usually had to do agricultural work such as picking cotton, harvesting sugar cane, planting and harvesting rice, harvesting tobacco, growing and harvesting coffee, building railroads, weaving, carpentry, washing clothes, cooking and more. They had no control of what they had to do, as they had to obey their owners. The housing that slaves lived in was atrocious. Slaves usually had to make their own homes. There is a substantial amount of evidence to support my reasonings from the book which will be used to explain why Tomi is so loyal. One word that will help explain Tomi s loyalty is the word Kind which Tomi show many times throughout the book. Tomi s kindness towards other is a very important key evidence to why Tomi s so loyal. What makes Tomi so kind is the fact that Tomi doesn t act rude to his friends and he always sticks by their sides. This is clearly stated in the book and one evidence in the book to prove this is in Chapter 10 page 49 it says For Tomi, I going be Japanese. which is pretty much trying to say that Rico would be Japanese for Tomi s sake cause Rico sees Tomi as a good trustworthy friend that he can trust. ... Determinism, libertarianism and compatibilism are three significantly different views on where unaccountability might stop and where free will and moral responsibility begin. Determinism is the strict opinion that every action and decision is the cause of an event, genetics or the environment prior to that action. Quite the opposite is libertarianism, which happens to be the genuine belief in free will as well as the denial of universal causation. Finally, deep self compatibilism meshes both of these stand points together and introduces the idea that one s action can be free if it stems purely out of personal, authentic desire. Silenus is very high on himself as he rarely ever takes Hench s threats seriously because he is intelligent enough to understand that Hench feels responsible for anything that he does. This is partially because Silenus is constantly reminding him that he isn t responsible for how his mind works and thus can never be held accountable for any action that may blossem from his desires. Third, since Silenus concludes that he is not responsible for what he is, free will and moral responsibility must cease to exist in his case. Don t be silly Hench. Only human beings are responsible. I am what I am, (Satyr, 218). The Satyr considers himself to be above human responsibility based on both his pre determined genetic information, and also his environment when he s reduced to cleaning his creator s lab. To add, all human acquaintances Silenus has had the displeasure of meeting label him as an untrustworthy beast. By soaking up human behavior like a sponge, Silenus discovers that people can be extremely selfish, so he decides it is ok to mock this behavior in a very direct manner. Butler (2004) has the similar idea that fantasy is what allows us to imagine ourselves and others otherwise (p.28). Two science fiction feminist texts The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Her idea co relates with Nietzsche s view of gender that there is no gender identity behind the expression of gender; that identity is performatively constituted by the expression of one s gender(Butler, 1990, p.24 25). This issue arises especially when students register and enroll in classes, only to find out that they re waitlisted. So comes the long wait for the student who waits until his or her waitlist is lifted. During this time, it is easy for miscommunication and confusion to arise for both the student and professor, and in the midst of this chaotic scene are waitlisted discussion sections that the student may not know about. Moreover, using surveys will help faculty members to realize other students concerns with Cal Student Central. What is also crucial is noting the pros and cons of fixing this enrollment issue. After World War II ended, a new conflict started, known as the Cold War, this battle was between the United States and the Soviet Union for superiority. Beginning in the late 1950s, space would be another battleground for these superpowers. Not only were they going to battle on ground but also in what seemed impossible at the time which was space. Due to this new competition many technological advancements were made. So, to what extent was the space race the determining factor to technologically improve space travel? The US and Soviet Union were both making many technological advances within their countries that made this race to space competitive. Competition is something the Soviet union and the US have always had between them, and would continue to have throughout the Cold war. • 17. Egyptian Pyramids Essay In the deserts of Egypt lie the colossal remains of an ancient civilization. These enormous works of human endeavor are the only member of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World that time has passed down to us. These are, of course, the great pyramids of ancient Egypt. But these imposing structures were not built to impress civilization millennia down the road. The pyramids in fact had a purpose to the ancient Egyptians. While they seem very simple in nature, as they are simply four sided pyramids with square bases, they had a meaning for those that had them built. Even by today s standards, the pyramids of ancient Egyptwere an impressive feat of engineering, due to their enormous size, both in building materials and finished product.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was achievements such as these that gained Imhotep great respect among later Egyptians who not only saw him as a great architect, but also a magician, astronomer, and the father of the art of medicine (Edwards 35). Step pyramids are similar to the pyramids we know today, but instead of being flat on all four sides, they have setbacks as they rise, giving the appearance of giant steps. These step pyramids were not true pyramids, however, but by the second dynasty of the Old Kingdom, true pyramids began to take shape. The now ruined pyramid of Meidum is an early example of a true pyramid. While the ruined core of the superstructure is the only thing that really remains of this pyramid, archaeologists have deduced that it was originally built as a step pyramid, and then later converted to a true pyramid by building over the steps, thereby flattening the sides (Edwards 74 77). However, the evolution of the true pyramid was not without its flaws. One good example of this is the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. At the beginning of its existence, the pyramid was supposed have a slope of 60 degrees. But when the pyramid was being built, cracks began to develop in it, so the builders quickly compensated by giving the sides a shallower angle. However, it appears they did not compensate enough, and another adjustment had to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. The Protest Without Hatred By Solomon Northup The Protest without Hatred 12 years a slave is a book about the slavery in the pre Civil War South. It was written based on a true story that happened to Solomon Northup who is also the author of the book. The story was a violent protestation, but also full of love without any hatred of Black people, who were being slaved for all their life. The Slavery was abolished in North America; however, it still existed in the South America at that time. Solomon Northup, a Black citizen of New York City, was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1851. He was rescued at a Louisianan cotton plantation in 1853. After being freed, Solomon Northup wrote the book 12 years a slave to recount the years of terrible abuses that he had been bearing under the Slavery. Northup s story was regarded as a source of inspiration in Civil War which contributed in the democracy of United States as today. It was also a piece of art as well as a work of human insight which awaked the human love, conscious fight, dignity protection, and the freedom of man. Twelve years are not long to people who have a freedom life; however, it is more than thousands of years for people who are being enslaved. Among the stories of slavery in the world, 12 years a slave was indeed an incomparable story. It was a real story which were written by the one who had breathed both the air of freedom in Northern, and the taste of being enslaved in the Southern America. The responsibility of a health care system is that the organization of people, institutions, and resources deliver the health care services required and meet the health needs of focus populations. Another duty that the health care systems stimulate is the reduction of inequality to race, gender, social status and religion. Each health care systemis different when looking at specific countries across the world, however some countries are more similar than others, such as France and Canada s health care system. Women s Rights Of The Civil Rights Movement Decades after the National Women s Party pushed for the passage of their proposed Equal Rights Amendment, feminists of the 1960s and 70s rallied once again for this change in the Constitution. The amendment, simply stating that, Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex, quickly gained popularity among activists in the 1970s. This support was not surprising, as this decade was a time of great change and protest. Women Right s leaders such as Alice Paul and Gloria Steinempushed for the passage of such major legislation. With support from Women s Right s groups such as the National Organization of Women, the amendment quickly made its way to Congress. The bill passed first in the House of Representatives in 1970, and then two years later, it passed in the Senate. As all amendments are passed, the votes then continued into the states. In order to be added to the constitution, the ERA needed to gain the support of thirty eight states. Within one year, twenty two states ratified the amendment. However, they began to decline in the early 1900 s because of the increased prevalence and efficiency of the internal combustion engine. The invention and use of the internal combustion engine was a pivotal point in the history of the automobile. The first attempt at an internal combustion engine was in 1673 by Christian Huygens, using gunpowder as the fuel source, though it was basically worthless as you had to open the engine up and put new gunpowder in it after every single stroke ( The Fuel Engine ). This lack of a fuel for internal combustion engines sidelined its development for a couple hundred years. In 1860 Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir built the first effective internal combustion engine using natural gas (Bottorff). The ignition of the gas would create a vacuum and the resulting pressure difference between the vacuum and the atmosphere would drive the power stroke (Bottorff). This gas atmospheric engine, as it is known, was an effective system capable generating 20hp, still it was imperfect. It was further improved with the development ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What once was shunned in almost every culture and society is now creeping into our laws and customs as normal and even acceptable due to the increase of radicals found in Anglo Saxon societies such as the US and UK. Fueled by the recent revolutions of women and interracial groups, homosexuals (a group less than 1 percent of the world s population), have finally taken a stand. Marriage has been a union of opposite sexes for nearly 5000 years and now has come into such scrutiny that it has taken on the attention of the Supreme Court. On April 28th, 2015, the Supreme Court began the case of Obergefell v. Hodge, the dispute which would settle the legalization of gay marriage in the entire US. From such a case, the question arises: Should gay marriage be legalized in the United States? After analyzing the points on both sides of the feud, I came to the clear conclusion that the answer was no, gay marriage should become and continue to be illegal in the United States. 2.Why Should we Ban Gay Marriage? II.A. Marriage was originally intended as the union of two people of opposite gender in order to create a procreation flesh. These events took place 18 19 December 1944, and later impacted the battle fought at Bastogne during World War II. It is the goal of this review to discuss and analyze three mission command principles displayed during this battle: Create shared understanding, exercise disciplined initiative, and the acceptance of prudent risk. One of the main characters that took part in this story was the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division. The commanding officer of this element was Major William R. Desobry. During the events of World War II, the German forces were trying to gain control of the Ardennes to cut off the allies supply lines in order to isolate British forces from the American troops. A pivotal task for German forces to attain this goal was to gain access and take control of the Belgian town of Bastogne. However, an important strategic stepping stone to get there was Noville, which is just seven kilometers northeast of Bastogne. Two main reasons made Noville such a critical location for the Germans: First, it had a junction of roads that were important for displacement of German forces to the West. Second, it provided an alternative road to access Bastogne from the north.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE BATTLE On 17 December, 1944, five German divisions were able to push through the VIII Corps defensive line 100 miles east of Bastogne nullifying ... Originally she believed that the word love meant something but when she became pregnant with Darl she learned that love didn t mean what the word meant and could in fact be very deceiving. I knew that that word [love] was like the others: just a shape to fill a lack. To Addie words lacks the power say what they mean and to give any other human being the experience. Words like love, pride, fear and motherhood, she believes were all made by people who had not experienced those things before. The space and emotions and ideas which language cannot fill leaves room for different interpretations, thus through languages lack, an objective view is unachievable. Throughout the novel, each character has not only brought their own viewpoints, they have also brought their own past experiences, accounts of the present and dreams of the future. In their interior monologues, more so when they slip into stream of consciousness, they meld the past, present and future and consequently view the occurrences through the coloured glass of their mind. Everything they say, think and do is corrupted by their underlying belief system and previous experiences, making it unfathomable that an objective account of events could be drawn from this compilation of ... • 37. The As A Social Reform Writer Essay I know you despise me; allow me to say, it is because you don t understand me. It is precisely this which Gaskell, as a social reform writer, wishes to change about Society in Victorian England. The very purpose of Gaskell s novel Mary Barton is to gauge an understanding between classes and equally to heighten the sympathy felt among those composing the middle and upper classes for those who fell within the realms of a lower social status. Gaskell was a strong believer in the idea that social issues such as class division were a result of misunderstanding and lack of communication, and so she nobly attempts to go about bridging this gap and providing the platform to resolve this with her fiction. This close reading of a passage in which John Barton, having experienced the loss of a wife and son, and since had multiple failings in his attempt to improve workers rights, turns to opium to lessen his suffering, will look to focus on Gaskell s methods and means, and what she is able to convey about the working class struggle through her writing. Gaskell uses repetition of language in this extract in order to convey the ceaseless and tiresome nature of the daily grind to which the working class endured. This is evident in the phrasing same circumstances and same despair , the repetition of the monosyllabic adjective same has a driving force on the language, creating the impression of a forward motion and perhaps reflecting the movement of the machinery used in the ... Age might be a moderator variable, in that the relation between SES and BSE could be stronger for older women and less strong or nonexistent for younger women. Education might be a mediator variable in that it explains why there is a relation between SES and BSE. When you remove the effect of education, the relation between SES and BSE disappears. • 40. Alma Luz Villanueva s I Was A Skinny Tomboy Kid Feminism is a major issue in the world today. Despite the fact that rights for women have been long given, there are still many major social gaps between women and men. I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid by Alma Luz Villanueva rejects a patriarchal lifestyle and promotes feminism because of it s tone, word choice, and layout. I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid is told in a very tense tone. Phrases like fists clenched into tight balls , deep darkness of my sleep , and thin, stubborn weed all contribute to a tense and almost enclosed feeling. However, the part that really promotes feminismis where the tone seems to soften, and a kind of childlike innocence is shown. This occurs when the speaker is talking about flying from roof to roof, when they re talking about their mother, and at the end, when they are talking about waking up late at night. The latter two particularly promote femism, because the attention of the reader is drawn to the parts of the poem where the tone changes. This way, if the author promotes feminism at these specific parts, the reader will catch onto it and accept it better.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It uses phrases like, grow up to be a woman , and be helpless like my mother , and that may seem like it is actually promoting a patriarchal society. However, that is just how the speaker is seeing things. The next few lines are the ones that truly show the feminism at this part of the poem. I didn t realize the kind of guts it often took for her to just keep standing where she was. This line seems to contradict the speakers earlier words of her mother being helpless. However, that is the point. Choosing the word helpless but then contradicting that word with the kind of guts it often took shows the reader that the speakers mother is strong because she is seen as helpless. She is looked down upon by others, including her own daughter, but has the guts to keep on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How might this apply to ways of knowing, as tools, in the pursuit of knowledge? It is possible that if we do not use Ways of Knowing in a too contracted and consistent way, it may limit the expanse and form of knowledge we are able to acquire. When attempting to acquire knowledge, one must have assets that will assist the process of solving issues. • 46. How Did Israel s Food Rations Contribute To The Creation... THE DIVISION OF ISRAEL Under the reign of Solomon, Israel reached great economic and political heights along with its security and prosperity. Solomon was renowned for his wisdom, wealth and building projects, but with these projects came heavy taxes and harsh labour on his people. After his death, the kingdom was divided into two separate kingdoms, north and south. The biblical record accounts for the division as a consequence for him staying from God, but his tax and labour laws and new administrative districts also lead to friction within his people. The immature leader that followed him amplified this friction. One of the contributing factors to the division was the heavy tax imposed on the people. This came in the form of food rations for both the Kings court. The writer of kings records the massive daily provisions of the king s palace, which included milled flour and livestock. The 12 new administrative provided these rations monthly. This caused major angst within the country as Judah was excluded from providing rations. Along with providing rations for Solomon, the people had to supply wheat and olive oil for the King Hiram of Tyre, who provided timber for the Temple of the Lord. • 49. Nitrogen, Carbon and Phosphorus Cycles Essay Nitrogen, Carbon and Phosphorus Cycles The carbon cycle deals with the interaction of carbon between living organisms and the nonliving environment. This cycle is a process through which all carbon rotates. The main result of the carbon cycle is to serve as a great natural recycler of carbon atoms. The cycle works in a very basic way. First, carbon is taken from carbon dioxide found in the air. Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use it, combined with water they get from the soil, to make substances they need for growth. The carbon is then mixed with water. Carbon dioxide is then formed into sugar (glucose). The process of photosynthesis incorporates the carbon atoms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carbon dioxide is very important in the atmosphere, however only in moderation. For centuries humans have been burning coal, oil, and fossil fuels therefore releasing tons of carbon into the air. The problem with this is that this can cause a problem known as global warming. This is a major climate problem, which has series results on people and the environment. The result on people can be very deadly. Too much carbon in the air can cause cancer. The nitrogen cycle is extremely important. This is because of the importance of nitrogen itself. Nitrogen is a basic element of life. It also makes up 78 percent of the Earth s atmosphere. It forms an essential part of amino acids (which make up proteins) and DNA. Nitrogen is essential for all living cells. The nitrogen cycle consists of 5 steps. First the basic element nitrogen in converted to ammonia. This process is called nitrogen fixation. This process is done by nitrogen fixing bacteria. Then the ammonia gets converted to nitrate. This process, called nitrification, is done by soil bacteria. Assimilation is the third step. Here the ammonia and the nitrate are absorbed by plants. Ammonification converts the nitrogen into ammonia. This process is done by ammonifying bacteria. The final step is denitrification. Here the nitrate is converted back to nitrogen. Denitrifying bacteria aid in this process. Like all other elements, nitrogen is very important in life but in moderation.
