Types of Volcanoes
Volcanoes are classified according to its
structure, activity, and location
Classification of Volcano by S T R UCT UR E
1. Cinder Cones
is a small volcano built primarily of pyroclastic materials
ejected from a single vent. T hey have narrow base and
steep sides. Example is, Mt. Dakula in J olo.
y
2. S hield Volcanoes
are produced by the accumulation of fluid basaltic lava
and have a shaped of a broad, slightly dome struture.
T hese volcanoes have a quiet lava flows that cover a
large area.
example: T aal volcano in B atangas
3. Composite volcanoes
are built by alternating layers of rock particles and lava. During
the formation of this type of volcano, a violent erruption first
occurs, hurling a volcanic bomb, cinders and ash out of vent.
T hen quiet erruption occurs, producing a lava flow. After many
alternating eruption, a large con-shaped volcanoes are
formed.
examples: Mayon Volcano in Albay, Mt. B ulusan in S orsogon.
T ypes of volcano according to a its
activity.
1. active volcano
a volcano that is currently in a state of
regular eruption.
2. Dormant or inactive volcano
Quiz no1.
1. Which of the following volcanic particles is made of rocky fragments about the size of grain
of rice?
a. cinders c. volcanic ash
b.pumice d. volcanic bomb

a. active c. explosive
b.extinct d. dormant
3. The huge hole left by the collapse of volcanic mountain.
a. caldera c. lava plateu
b. cinder cone d. S hield volcano
4. If geologists detect many small earthquakes in the area near a volcano, what can they infer
about the volcano?
a. it is dormant c. it is probably about to errupt
b. it is extinct d. it has lots of magma underneath
5. How does the release of trapped gases in magma causes the volcano to errupt?
a. solid rock on earth's crust starts to melt
b. lava will pour out the sides of the mountain
c. magma starts to accumulate around the mountain
6. T he main hazard from the quiet erruption is__________.
a. hot gases c. molten rock
b. lava flows d. volcanic gases
7. T he cone-shaped moutain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash.
a. cinder cone c. lava plateus
b. composite volcanoes d. S hield volcano
8. When many thin, runny lava build up on a high level area, the result is a_____.
a. cinder cone c. lava plateu
b. composite d. S hield volcano
9. Which type of rock would you expect to form because of an explosive erruption?
a. basalt b. granite c. pumice d. rhyolite
10. Why do volcanoes called as windows to earth's interior?
a. earthquakes can be predicted
b. there are openings on the top of volcanoes
c. gasses and particles come out durig volcanic erruption
d. earth's interior can be studied through the chemical composition of the lava
11. a volcano that has no record of any erruption and unlikely to errupt is an ____.
a. active c. dormant
b. extinct d. inactive
12. volcanoes in the P hilippines are located in the ______
a. P acific R ing of F ire c. dormant
