- In this presentation we are going to present various basic types of bricks which are very important in civil engg.
- Common burnt clay bricks are formed by pressing in molds. Then these bricks are dried and fired in a kiln. Common burnt clay bricks are used in general work with no special attractive appearances. When these bricks are used in walls, they require Plastering or rendering.
- Sand lime bricks are made by mixing sand, Fly ash and lime followed by a chemical process during wet mixing. The mix is then molded under pressure forming the brick. These bricks can offer advantages over clay bricks such as: Their color appearance is grey instead of the regular reddish color. Their shape is uniform and presents a smoother finish that doesn’t require plastering. These bricks offer excellent strength as a Load Bearing member.
- Engineering bricks are bricks manufactured at extremely high temperatures, forming a dense and strong brick, allowing the brick to limit strength and water absorption. Engineering bricks offer excellent load bearing capacity damp-proof characteristics Engineering bricks offer excellent chemical resisting properties.
- Concrete bricks are made from solid concrete. Concrete bricks are usually placed in facades, fences, and provide an excellent aesthetic presence. These bricks can be manufactured to provide different colors as pigmented during its production.
- Fly ash clay bricks are manufactured with clay and fly ash, at about 1,000 degrees C. Some studies have shown that these bricks tend to fail poor produce pop-outs, when bricks come into contact with moisture and water, causing the bricks to expand.
- Paving Bricks are now available in many sizes , shapes.
- A fire brick is a block of refractory ceramic material used in lining furnaces, kilns, fireboxes, and fireplaces. They are also known as firebrick, or Refractory bricks. A refractory brick is built primarily to withstand high temperature, but will also usually have a low thermal conductivity for greater energy efficiency. Usually dense firebricks are used in applications with extreme mechanical, chemical, or thermal stresses, such as the inside of a wood-fired kiln or a furnace, which is subject to abrasion from wood, fluxing from ash or slag, and high temperatures In other, less harsh situations, such as in an electric or natural gas fired kiln, more porous bricks, commonly known as "kiln bricks" are a better choice. They are weaker, but they are much lighter, easier to form, and insulate far better than dense bricks. In any case, firebricks should not spall and their strength should hold up well under rapid temperature change. These bricks are specially made to withstand furnace temperature. Silica bricks belong to this category.

- This bricks are used to increase beauty of external walls of structure.
- This type of brick is commonly used for preventing good ventilation to rooms By let the air pass in the room easily. It is also used to provide beautiful appearance to the structure on elegance principal of structure.
- This bricks are light in weight. They are used for the construction of partition walls. They provide good thermal insulation to buildings.
- These bricks are used for the construction of sewage lines. They are manufactured from surface clay, fire clay shale or with the combination of these. The water absorption property of sewer bricks is very low(it is about 10%).
- These bricks are used for floorings likely to be subjected to acid attacks, lining of chambers in chemical plants, lining of sewers carrying industrial wastes etc. They resists all the chemical reactions between them and any acid.
- The surface of this bricks are smooth and rectangular , with parallel ,sharp and straight edges and square corners These bricks have uniform texture. They are very hard. These bricks are recommended for face work & wall work in masonry structures.
- This are also well burnt. But there size are irregular. In these bricks small cracks and distortions are permitted. These are recommended for normal building works.
- These are underburnt .they are not strong. It is used for building temporary structures.
- These are overburnt and badly distorted in shape and size and brittle in nature. The ballast of such bricks is used for foundation and road filling.
