Comparing The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is set in England during the 1940 s. During this time World
War II was happening, and the air raids in London. During this time England was already in war and
was suffering due to all the lives lost so far in the the war. Germany in 1940 and 1941 would blitz
England without warning, Blitz is a German word meaning lightning war. Not only were air raids
happening but we re dealing with problems within their country. They were dealing with rationing,
and still trying to get back on their feet from the Great Depression. During the Great Depression
England was one of the more lucky ones. Their economic downturns wasn t as severe as other
countries such as the United States, Australia, and also Germany, but they still had a very bad impact
of depression on its country. The world wide trade dropped and this caused more and more jobs to be
lost and the unemployment rate to skyrocket. The main industries hit during the Great Depression in
England were the mining and industrial fields because of the lack of money to pay the employees.
This led to the unemployment rate to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the war was over there was still so much to do. The allied powers had to liberate all the
concentration camps and try and save all the people that survived. Britain helped liberate northern
Germany camps that included Neuengamme and Bergen Belsen. After a long fought war the soldiers
and military leaders were finally able to come home. This very long fought war has finally come to an
end for the British soldiers. Although the war was over Britain problems have only just begun. There
were over 4 million destroyed and many people were homeless due to this. Also the economy had
been at its all time lowest. Britain had taken out loans during the war to try and fund it, and the U.S.
and Canada weren t sending aid to them. This caused Britain to fall into severe

Paul s Difficulty Analyse
Based on the provided information the most critical issue is Paul s difficulty grasping, analyzing, and
comprehending grade level content, specifically themes, symbolism, and abstract concepts in his
readings. Consequently, this appears to be the most critical issue as Paul, having been diagnosed with
a reading disability, is currently not meeting grade level expectations and may end up failing his
Language Arts 10 class. Furthermore, this difficulty may be affecting other aspects of his work such
planning and organization which in turn is causing issues with his peers. Answer B As a teacher, I
would start by looking at the previous work done by Paul throughout the semester. Additionally, I
would make note of assignments in which

Resonant Characteristics Of The Acoustic Theory Of Speech...
According to the acoustic theory of speech production, what we know to be speech output results from
a source of sound energy (e.g. the larynx) modulated by a transfer (filter) function which is determined
by the shape of the resonator (vocal tract). This model, often referred to as the source filter theory of
speech production, originates from the works of Gunner Fant (1960, 1980) and Stevens and House
(1955, 1961) (Haskins Laboratory, Yale University 2008). Source filter theory puts forth two distinct
and important ideas; one is that the specific articulatory postures that the vocal tract takes on results in
the production of specific sounds, which is why speakers can deduce the shape of the vocal tract upon
hearing a speech sound. The other is that while the source may produce a sound, the filter will select
only a portion of the harmonics within that sound to be amplified and issued from the mouth
(Behrman, A. 2017).
Resonant Characteristics of the Vocal Tract
Because source filter theory breaks up speech production into the resonator and the source, it allows
us the advantage of assessing the contributions of each. When examining the glottal source, it is
important to keep in mind its acoustic characteristics. The glottal source, perceived as a buzzing noise
when not filtered through a resonator, has a fundamental frequency and corresponding harmonics. The
first characteristic to consider would be whether the sound is voiced or voiceless. When a sound is
voiced, the

Gerald Graff And Rakoff s They Say I Say
In chapter seven of They Say / I Say, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein address how to improve a
topic through connectivity, and how the topic relates to the reader. They do so by introducing the
questions so what? and who cares? which, in their view, make for a more stimulating paper. Even if an
issue is obviously consequential, Birkenstein and Graff argue, the writer should go as far as possible in
answering those questions (100). One way the writer can do this is by refutibg the standard opinion of
their topic (97). Judge Jed Rakoff does precisely that in his article, Why Innocent People Plead Guilty.
He begins by noting that the criminal justice system bears little resemblance to what the Founding
Fathers contemplated . . . [and] what the average American believes. Due to plea bargains, jury trials
in the United States are exceedingly rare, in spite of constitutional provisions for a speedy and public
trial. If there is no trial, there can be no speedy trial, and that means that this constitutional right, for
most, is a myth. But while this revelation complicates and adds relevance to Rakoff s topic, he also
asks What s wrong with that? a variation of so what? In answer to this question, he says that plea
bargains are secret negotiations that invite[] arbitrary results. Both innocent and guilty defendants, in
other words, are placed in the same pot, and the goal is to achieve the appearance of fairness, not the
realization of it. Considering ninety seven percent of federal convictions are the results of guilty pleas
(Rakoff), that is a haunting injustice. Journalist Antonia Malchik takes a similar approach to in The
End of Walking. The right to walk, as Malchik calls it, might not seem as important as the right to a
fair trial, but she is explicit about the cost. Walking, Malchik observes, is an interconnection of
cognitive processes that can have a significant impact on everything from cardiovascular disease to
muscle atrophy. Yet walking as way of life is more out of reach than ever. For instance, in 2013, more
than 4,700 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes (Malchik). Malchik further emphasizes the
seriousness of the situation by including a relevant

Scrupulous Writer
I am not a scrupulous writer, but I like to be a scrupulous writer. It is important to avoid choosing

Praying For Sheetrock Book Report
There were many things you could have learned from reading the book Praying for Sheetrock that
would be very useful to your lives. Segregation was one of those things because in the book the white
had their own community in the book and African Americans had their own communities in the wood
they both were separated but not equal because the white were in charge of both communities.
Corruption was happening all through this book from the sheriff Poppell tipping the truck on the
highway so the poor people could get shoes to it bring down the hero Thurnell Alston. The violent acts
in this book, like Sheriff Hutchinson shoots Flinch in the mouth and leaving him for dead in jail cell.
Many things that happened in this book happened in real life that we could all learn from, like making
sure we re integrated and were equal, were not corrupt, and not use violence as a way to discipline
someone.
In the rural town of McIntosh County, Georgia there were two ... Show more content on

One important thing I learned was about segregation and how it could deeply hurt a town and that if
we don t integrated that we will never be equal. I also learned how bad corruption could affect a town
like McIntosh County in a good and bad way. Corruption could be used in a good way, for example,
when the trucks were on the road and sheriff Poppel let the poor people take what s on the truck
because they couldn t afford to buy them. Corruption could also be used in a bad way, like when they
were ticking the northerners to take their money or how it took down the hero. The violent act of an
unarmed black man being shot in the mouth and dragged to jail with no medical attention was also a
concept still happening to this day. We should all take a lesson from this book and making sure we re

Essay The History of Fair Trade
Fair trade can be defined as a social movement thats objective is to help producers in developing
countries make better trading conditions and elevate sustainability. Fair trade is contrasting to the
other trade practices in our world, its about making codes of fairness in the marketplace. The practice
of fair trade seeks to reshape the way we buy and sell products to verify that all farmers and skilled
workers behind the manufacturing of goods get a better deal. Most people would assume this as a
better means for prices, however can include better and longer lasting relationships. Fair trade is also
about information, having the knowledge as to where are food/products are coming from, and having
the knowledge that all products were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However the fair trade movement was majorly shaped in the years following WWII. The Mennonite
Central Committee and SERRV International were the first in 1946 to develop fair trade supply chains
in developing countries. The products were mostly sold by volunteers in charity stores. North
Americas first fair trade organization started in 1946 also, Ten Thousand Villages. Later in 1988, the
launch of the first fair trade label (Max Havelaar) was created under the initiative of a Dutch
development agency. The Max Havelaar label was further replicated in several markets in Europe and
North America. In 1989 the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT) was the first umbrella
organization to unite and coordinate fair trade business and organizations. They became the first
organization to commit to fair trade 100%. Later in 1997 the Fairtrade International (FLO) was
established, this was the second major umbrella organization for fair trade. However the FLO does not
require fair trade on 100% of its members or products. Later in 2004, Fairtrade international split into
two independent organizations, FLO which sets fair trade standards, and producer support, and FLO
CERT, which inspects and certifies producer organizations. Today fair trade has developed into
something much more, the global sales have soared over the past decade. This proves that fair trade is
actually making a difference in our world, a little bit at a time.

Vertical And Vertical Types Of Vertical Farming
Vertical Farms Vertical farming is a component of urban agriculture and is the practice of producing
food in vertically stacked layers or vertically inclined surfaces. Advantages of Vertical Farming
Minimum Input Maximum Output Vertical Farming is a revolutionary approach to producing high
quantities of nutritious and quality fresh food all year round, without relying on skilled labour,
favourable weather, high soil fertility or high water usage. Vertical Farm Systems growing cycles are
consistent and reliable, allowing commercial growers to confidently commit to delivery schedules and
supply contracts. In a well managed Vertical Farm System, there are no such thing as seasonal crops
and there are no crop losses. Vertical Farm Systems are fully enclosed and climate controlled,
completely removing external environment factors such as disease, pest or predator attacks. It also
means our farms are not dependent on fertile arable land and can be established in any climatic region
globally irrespective of seasonal daylight hours and extremes in temperature. The use of high
efficiency LED lighting technology ensures minimum power usage for maximum plant growth.
Computer management of photosynthetic wavelengths in harmony with phase of crop growth further
minimises energy use while ensuring optimised crop yields Greatly reduced energy usage for climate
control is the direct result of not requiring sunlight inside the growing area which enables the use of
high thermal

The Characteristics Of Community Psychology
Richard Henry
PSY 324E
October 14, 2017
A Collective Mind
Before we can discuss what community psychology is, we must understand what a community is. We
often view a community as a collective or randomized people, some happen to work close by, some
happen to like the housing market and decided to raise a family, and some may have been in the same
town for their whole lives, feeling no interest to look beyond. What is represented here, is the
differences within the individuals. No two people have the same exact story, the same upbringing, the
same experience. Often times, your neighbor may be nothing like you, yet you may have similarities.
The similarities may come from the way you both think politically, to the teams you root for. (you
notice he too, has a 12th man sticker plastered on his back windshield)
Community psychology is the collection of individuals, their moralities, their viewpoints on the world
and the basis in which you collectively live. For the example of different communities, I ll take
Portland, Oregon, my new place of residence, versus where I am originally from, Ocean City, New
Jersey. Portland is recognized as one of the more inclusive places in the world, a collection of people
who look out for each other , wanting everyone to feel both welcome and equal. We often look at a
place as being a general population of similar people, where we assume everyone in Portland just
moves here and becomes influenced. But I tend to believe that people live

Outline Of Jackson Pollock
Outline / Background of Artist Jackson Pollock
Mr. Jackson Pollock, deemed the most famous modern artist of the 20th Century is well known in the
history of American art as an Abstract Expressionist of drip paintings. Jackson Pollock (1912 1956)
Jackson was attributed claim to be a liberating artist with no real discipline of one s self expressions.
In 1929 Jackson Pollock began his art studies at the Students League in New York, here is where he
was introduced to using his expressions from the subconscious and creating art. After viewing a
Picasso exhibition; entitled Picasso: 40 Years of His Art, Jackson Pollack seemed to realize the power
of expressionism and later began his drip style paintings. Three years ago I can recall a movie ... Show

He later attended a college of arts. I get the feeling from reading about Pollock he wanted to be
different. He did not want to be constrained by others ideas or conformed to what Americans of the art
world wanted from artists. I believe he struggled and was tormented by his own feelings and unable to
cope. Using alcohol, I believe the bottle took all his inhibitions away and allowed him to do as he
pleased without judging himself. I think there are moments of soberness when he stopped painting and
took a step back and looked at his creations. I believe in these moments he would sit pondering or
rethinking why he did what he did. He would start to feel whatever emotion and he would then pick
up another color and try to make an amends with his own creations. It seems maddening for this
behavior but it shows this in his art. It seems this madness went on and on until there was no more
resolution for him, he would then abruptly stop. After more drinking I think he would start a new
painting. This could be the reasoning as to why we see some of his last paintings, looking so dreary in
color and lack of rhythm. The paintings which have vibrant colors are when he was at peace with who
he was as a person. I do not care for all of his paintings. Some of the paintings do look like someone

Challenges Of Islamic Finance Industry
CHALLENGES TO ISLAMIC FINANCE INDUSTRY
Many authors agree that Islamic finance industry has a long way to become globally successful
industry. To achieve its potential for solid growth, Islamic finance must improve number of areas
including: improving regulatory supervision in the industry, adaptation of tax treatment to Islamic
banking products, establishing liquidity control, introducing risk management tools, supporting
standardization of financial products and others.
Prasad (2015) mentions necessity of protection of investments accounts, regulation in relation to
Islamic contracts and treatment of investments accounts and risk management. He also highlights
liquidity, as the critical issue. There is a lack of management instruments in central banks to manage
liquidity in Islamic banks. The Sukuk market is expected to continue to expand very rapidly, and its
development will give Islamic banks access to the high quality liquid assets needed to comply with
international liquidity standards. Tax regulation is needed in countries which have only regulations for
conventional finance system, because some of Islamic products can face double taxation from their
nature, especially investment income from Sukuks. There is also problem with multilayered
transactions, which can cause higher taxation. All these taxation aspects may put Islamic finance at a
disadvantage.
The recent global financial crisis highlighted the importance of policymakers in responding system

A Dill Pickle Critical Analysis
A Dill Pickle by Katherine Mansfield represents the women s pursuit of independence through
loneliness. Mansfield captures real life stories, not ones fabricated to appeal to the masses. This story
takes place in a café, a couple meets again after 6 years apart. Their meeting emphasizes the women
(Vera s) cynical look on love and her sensitive personality. The man exudes arrogance and has a way
with words. The differences between the two characters highlight the divergence of their love and the
lack of certain personality traits of each character. This unveils one of many reasons why their
relationship would come to an end breaking both of their hearts. Vera doesn t talk much in the text,
instead we dive deep into her inner thoughts and that s where she expresses her true feelings of the
past relationship and unravels her teetering feelings for the man, each topic he brings up reminds her
of an unpleasant memory of him from the past but as he talks he turns those horrible memories into
good ones, convincing Vera to fall back in love with him. But she was thinking how well she
remembered that trick of his the trick of interrupting her and of how it used to exasperate her six years
ago (Mansfield, 16). The fact that Mansfield chose to have Vera think how it used to exasperate her
this shows that it no longer irritated her by the word choice of used to the man has convinced her that
it no longer is a point of irritation for her but something she now finds endearing.

Football Is Dangerous And Something That Should Not Be...
Football is considered to be dangerous and something that should not be played or watched by people.
The game should be played and watched because a lot of players work hard to fight towards the
ultimate goal of making it in the National Football League despite the possibilities of injury. It is the
player s responsibility to know when it is time for them to walk away and take the proper safety
procedures to keep them from injuring themselves. The players work hard and do plenty of
conditioning to try to keep them in shape and prevent their bodies from breaking down. Many kids
who play do it because they love the game and they gladly take the risk of injury. Football is very
popular for viewers as well. The National Football League saw a rise in ratings following the wild
card weekend this year compared to last years. Many TV networks saw a rise in ratings such as NBC,
CBS, and FOX. According to Michael David Smith of profootballsports.nbcsports.com Despite
predictions of drops in ratings due to concussions, domestic violence, or other issues the sport still
continues to thrive .The sport is becoming more and more popular and many people believe we should
watch it even though there is problems that make some people not want to watch the game. Some
people believe football should not be watched or played due to injuries and some players being bad
role models towards children. Concussions are a major reason why people believe football is a bad

Basia Themes
NAUTICA is a captivating sea adventure. There s a worthy and challenging goal and the stakes are
high. The story is driven by solid themes about bonding, reconnecting, and healing.
The emotional theme cleverly works on three levels. The main storyline regarding the relics is about
finding the missing part, and reconnecting them. On the journey, the protagonist, Hal, bonds and
connects with his employee, Gene.
In the protagonist s personal life he learns to reconnect with his estranged girlfriend and daughter, and
he learns to heal from his past, involving his father. It s nice to see how the emotional premise all

When they find the relic, then it would be a surprise when Basil pulls out a gun and allows the Ula and
Ned on the boat (or something like that). Also, having Holly on the adventure would make the ending
more convincing. Right now there s not a true romance or a true relationship formed between Holly
and Hal, so it s challenging to see them together at the end.
As mentioned, Hal is a likable and quiet hero. He has strong inner conflict and he equally has a strong
character arc when he decides family comes first and that the wants a normal, committed life. He
realizes he has been chasing a ghost.
Unfortunately, Holly is underwritten. She s great in the scene telling Hal off, but then fades. She
shares nice chemistry with Hal, but one wants more. It s fun when Hal is jealous of a photo, but it s

Gene is a delightful sidekick. But I don t want to do something extraordinary, Hal. I m having a hard
time as it is trying to achieve boring. He also has a nice character arc. He goes from timid, insecure,
afraid of swimming and anything that takes him away from land, but by the end, he s the one
championing the adventure. He learns from Hal, as Hal learned from Gene. What isn t convincing is
that Gene doesn t know what a mariner s astrolabe is, given his expert knowledge in

Zoos Are An Unsafe Environment For Animals
What do you see when you think of a Zoo? Usually, people think of a place to hang out with family
and friends and are educated on animals. Zoos give an opportunity for city kids or people to see wild
animals. A zoo is a place where animals live in and are put on display for people to view. Zoos travel
back to as early as 2500 B.C., when nobility started to collect exotic animals. In Europe, sixteenth
century, when early explorers traveled to the New World, they brought home all sorts of weird and
wonderful creatures like anteaters and sloths (Sunquist). The first modern zoo, opened in Vienna in
1765, but it was not until the mid to late 1800s that zoos started to become more common. The idea of
displaying wild animals to the public in the park was instantly appealing to the rising middle class of
the Victorian era (Sunquist). Though some may believe zoos are an unsafe environment for animals,
most zoos have benefited animals by educating the public, contributing to the conservation of animals
by developing breeding programs or other conservation oriented programs, and also bringing them
into a safe environment. Some critics may argue that Zoos are a harmful and inhumane method of
commercializing animals. While this may be true, zoos also are very beneficial not just to animals but
to humans because they bring communities together and foster an appreciation of animals. This
exposure motivates and educates people into protecting the animals. Rebecca Madden, a time staff

Cuckoo will not need a cloud based server as they are a small business which will not need to access

order to keep track of appointments, suppliers, receipts, customer information and etc.
Web authoring tools make it possible to create and design web pages in ease as it requires to be less

not created the website themselves.

Four Stages Of Jean Piaget
Piaget When Jean Piaget s ideas became widely popularized in the 1960s, the designation of
development as a major sub field of psychology soon followed. His cognitive development theory has
four major stages, as follows: 1. Sensorimotor stage (birth through age two). The child experiences the
world through movement and her five senses. A child is extremely egocentric in this stage and cannot
perceive the world from others viewpoints. During the sensorimotor stage children come to develop
object permanence. 2. Preoperational stage (ages two to seven). Beginning with the child s learning to
speak, this stage sees an increase in children s playing and pretending, primarily through symbolic
play and manipulating symbols. Children in this stage continue to have difficulty seeing things from
different points of view. The two substages of the preoperational stage are the symbolic function
substage and the intuitive thought substage. 3. Concrete operational stage (ages seven to eleven). In
this stage children are beginning to think logically and are no longer egocentric. They greatly improve
their classification skills and become more aware of logic and conservation. 4. Formal operational
stage (ages eleven to sixteen). This stage sees the development of abstract reasoning. Children in this
stage develop abstract thought and can conserve and think logically with more facility. Children in the
formal operational stage show more skills for problem solving. Piaget described different types of
intellectual structures, or schemata, in his work: Behavioral (sensorimotor) schemata organized
patterns of behavior that represent and respond to objects and experiences. Symbolic schemata
internal mental symbols, including images or verbal codes, used to represent aspects of experience.
Operational schemata internal mental activity performed on objects of thought. As Piaget described
them schemata are significantly important building blocks of development and are modified by on
going experiences. They are continuously being modified or changed and can be a generalized idea
based on prior knowledge or experience. Erikson A student of Anna Freud (daughter to Sigmund
Freud), Erik Erikson saw human development as continuing

Kathleen Parker s Article, First Three Years Aren t That Critical
Did your mother read to you when you were six weeks old? Did she teach you how to do math
problems when you were two? Recently, I read an issue of Parenting Magazine and found an article on
child development. Kathleen Parker s article, First Three Years Aren t That Critical tells us that parents
today are putting to much emphasis on what the media and medical journals are saying, instead of
using common sense. The article emphasizes that parents are going overboard on these new studies
using good argumentative techniques. Although I found not all of what she said was accurate, I still
felt she got her point across. Parker uses evidence from scientists and medical ... Show more content

By acknowledging the other viewpoint, the author can still present her argument and not offend the
reader so much that they would quickly side against her. Using these techniques, the author effectively
attracts the readers attention and explains the main point of the rest of the article.
I noticed that in this article, Parker challenges the media s representation on the effectiveness of early
childhood development by stating that you should not change how you raise your child based on
trivial news articles. Parker lists sources: Newsweek, the Clintons, and books about early
development, as causes for parents to go overboard on developing their young children. The point that
Parker is trying to get across is that these articles are not reasons for society to change their parental
habits. The author is saying that the news articles can not prove one way or the other that teaching
your child early in life gives them the advantage. Just because an article says that in some cases child
development is effective, it doesn t mean that it is true or appropriate to change the way you are
teaching your two year old. Parker s technique is to debunk the idea of these sources, and to get the
reader to believe in her side.To further her persuasive article, the author wanted to show that the media
can not prove one way or the other that teaching your child early will affect how smart they become in
life. Parker mentions that Thomas Jefferson s

Juvenile Delinquents In The Twentieth Century
According to Bartollas and Schmalleger (2014), Sigmund Freud, the most famous psychologist of the
twentieth century, developed his now famous psychoanalytic theory, which contributed three insights
that shaped the handling of juvenile delinquents throughout much of the last century, (pp. 62 63).
Freud s model describes personality as a dynamic system guided by three psychological structures: the
id, the ego, and the superego. The theory of the atavistic criminal, being born criminal, existed in
certain individuals. This mannerism would periodically reappear and lead to crime, because of the
primitive impulses that they were likely to possess, (Bartollas Schmalleger, 2014, p.58). Freud once
stated, Where id is, there shall ego be (NotableQuotes, n.d, p. 1) According to Freud, most behavior
involves activity of all three structures. The id the most primitive of the three structures, is concerned
with instant gratification of basic physical needs and urges (Boundless, n.d. p.1). The id acts as a
control source for the entire psyche or personality and is unconscious. The tension related to sex and
aggressions are released through the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

psychoanalysis the distinction between latent and manifest delinquency. Psychiatrist Kate Friedlander,

Research questions hoped to be answered by this study is framed from the background, problem
statements and literatures reviewed. These questions are stated below:
Q1: Does entrepreneurial education influence entrepreneurial intention among public and private
universities?
Q2: Does students at private and public universities perceive government support effective factors to
become an entrepreneur?
With these two questions the objectives are stated as follows
i. To investigate and compare the role of entrepreneurial education between public and private
universities students ii. To examine the perception of students towards social support for
entrepreneurial activities in Malaysia.

Investigating factors that influence entrepreneurial intention, several theories had being applied by
different scholars for example, studying role or influence of education on intention of entrepreneurs,
the two most prominent theories are Ajzen s Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Sahpero and
Sokol s theory of entrepreneurial model. Intention as described by Davison (1995) is the urge to do or

Nitrate And Its Effects On Exercise Abuse In The Human Body
Nitrate (NO3 ) supplementation has been widely researched for its effects on exercise performance
since Larsen et al 2007 found that it decreased the oxygen cost of submaximal aerobic exercise. The
effect of NO3 in the body is tied to the production of nitric oxide (NO), which is an endogenous gas
that plays a regulatory role in many processes in the human body, including; blood pressure, calcium
handling, mitochondrial biogenesis, excitation coupling contraction, oxidative stress, regulation of
blood flow to muscle tissues, and skeletal muscle repair (Stamler Meismer 2001). NO is produced in
the body via the L Arginine pathway, where NO is synthesized by NO synthase enzymes (Stamler
Meismer 2001).
However, studies have discovered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This increase in exercise tolerance may be able to increase the performance of both moderate and high
intensity exercise, but the research is conflicting regarding nitrate s effectiveness on high intensity
exercise. Nitrate supplementation seems to be a useful ergogenic aid that could help increase the
performance in diverse types of exercise.
The most widely researched and documented effects of nitrate intake been its ability to decrease the
oxygen cost of submaximal aerobic exercise, at least in moderately trained or sedentary individuals.
The first study to discover these findings was conducted by Larsen et al in 2007. They found that the
oxygen uptake of moderately fit males while cycling at a moderate intensity (45% 85% VO2max) was
reduced by an average of 0.16 L/min 1. The most shocking result of these findings were that it
happened without an increase in the formation of blood lactate levels or any changes to heart rate,
meaning that the nitrate supplementation did in fact increase muscle efficiency (Larsen et al, 2007).
These effects have been most commonly noted in cycling (Larsen et al, 2007; Baily et al 2015, 2010
and 2009) and running (Porcelli et al, 2015). Reducing the oxygen cost of exercise during aerobic
activities would benefit greatly in competition, as it would allow an individual to maintain a faster
pace at a lower percentage of their VO2max than they previously could, thus theoretically delaying
fatigue.
This effect of oxygen cost on

culture, because it is the place where they are living in. Literature was brought to the United States
from the European culture. The American literature started to develop during the antebellum era in the
late 19th century and the 20th century. At this period of time many writers started to get well known in
the American society. Good examples of two good antebellum era writers are Kate Chopin, and Mary
Eleanor Wilkins Freeman. These two women made a big impact in the American history. Both of these
women were very important writers, and well known for their American romance fiction short stories.
Chopin s and Freeman s short stories were very interesting because they talked about real day by day
events. People liked their short stories, because sometimes they identified their selves with the
characters of the stories. Freeman and Chopin wrote several short stories while they were alive. There
are several reasons why Kate Chopin and Mary E. Wilkins Freeman affected the American literature

A Study On Admiralty Law And Maritime Law
UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 ABOUT SUBJECT: Admiralty Law or Maritime Law is a distinct
body of domestic laws that supervene upon the maritime activities (like marine commerce, sailors

and goods by sea). It has also been governing questions and offenses related to maritime activities and
other sub heads. Broadly, it is a more of a private international law related subject that governs the
relationship between private entities that operate vessels on the oceans. Keeping in view the

Hard Determinism Vs. Negatives
Throughout the years, many different philosophical ideas have been presented to the general populace.
One of these ideas, hard determinism, has presented alleged positives and alleged negatives. One
alleged negative that stands out to me is that no single person is responsible for their actions, no matter
how heinous that action may be. I argue, that throwing morality completely out of the equation, is a
genuine negative of hard determinism. In order to explain my thoughts, we must first understand the
full meaning of hard determinism. In Holbach s essay on hard determinism, he says, Nevertheless, in
spite of the shackles by which he is bound, it is pretended he is a free agent, or that independent of the
causes by which he is moved, he determines his own will, and regulates his own condition. 1 He
explains that free will is an illusion and that all of our actions are pre determined by prior factors.
Prior factors would include: experiences from the past, how one was raised, genetic makeup and so
on. No matter what you decide to do, you will never actually have a say in it because everything in
your life has led up to that point. For example; if one man is walking down the street and bumps into
another man, how the second man reacts will have been predetermined therefore not making him
liable for those actions. Say he decides to accept the man s apology and goes on with his day. This is
due to the way he was raised and his genetic makeup, not because of his own

The Pros And Cons Of Mountaintop Removal
Did you know that mountaintop removal coal provides around three percent of our countries
electricity? That does not seem like much, especially considering all the damage it causes. Large areas
of wildlife habitat have been destroyed so these mountaintop removal companies can gain and make a
profit. These companies do not care about the people in the communities they are hurting. Companies
also do not understand that animals can become exterminated from this, and they have been. Animals
that live in the mountains and streams lose their homes and can be killed. In September 2004, a
boulder went careening off a mountaintop removal site in western Virginia. It smashed through a

These explosives destroy around six hundred feet of mountain soil. According to Mountaintop
Removal 101, More than five hundred mountains have been destroyed by mountaintop removal. Box
cut mining, steep slope mining, cross ridge mining, area mining, mountaintop mining and area mining
are all types of mountaintop removal. This removal process usually takes place in east Kentucky,
southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia, and in east Tennessee (AppalachianVoices). First, the
company has to clear the area of land on the mountaintop. Second, they start blasting. Usually this
includes using millions of explosives and machines to blow up the mountaintop. Next on the list of
steps would be the digging. The leftover waste is then dumped into rivers and contaminates the water.
Coal companies are legally allowed to dump the debris because of the Clean Water Act. The next step
is the processing of the coal by chemically treating it. After the miners see the coal, they start remove
it using huge coal moving machines and take it to a coal processing plant. After the coal is chemically
treated, the company is required to, by law, build on the flattened land. This way the land will not be
wasted. Though it is said that mountaintop removal is the most effective and most cost effective way
to operate, many people say it is harmful to the environment. Mountaintop removal can potentially
expose many locals to safety. It has been banned in many places because of the hazardous effects it

Emerson And Transcendentalist Beliefs
I found it interesting how Emerson weaves his theology and philosophy into his writing. From the
very beginning of the passage, Emerson establishes his transcendentalist beliefs, reconciling the idea
that the wide universe is full of good with the idea that one must work to obtain sustenance by the idea
a tenant s land is given to him to till . This reconciliation being that in his worldview evil cannot exist,
so to explain the seeming logical inconsistency of people having to toil for food, he sets up the idea
the universe provides everyone with the opportunity to achieve, but one must be willing to utilize it.
The idea of transcending coming about through labor can be seen in the way transcendentalists tried to
establish a utopian society and to perfect mankind. The natural world, according to Emerson s
philosophy, gives each individual unique ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emerson also makes multiple parallels to various religions, seemingly connecting to Greek mythology
with the phase trust thyself , comparable to the phrase know thyself which is associated with the
Apollo temple at Delphi. If Emerson is making a reference to Greek philosophy to establish his
beliefs, then the iron string which every heart vibrates to may be related to the lyre, a symbol of
Apollo that is comparable to a harp. Another symbol that can be connected to Apollo is the laurel
wreath, a symbol of victory, comparable to immortal palms , in Emerson s essay being a symbol of
eternal triumph. As Apollo himself is often used as a symbol for the ambitions of mankind, Emerson
would be in this scenario using these allusions to Greek mythology to emphasize the ability of man to
transcend through the utilization of what nature has granted

The Working Memory Model
The working memory model was proposed by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974 as an alternative to
Atkinson Shiffrin s multi store model of memory. They argued that the short term memory was not a
passive, temporary store used to transfer information to the long term memory. Instead, they suggested
that it should instead be regarded as an active store which holds information as it is being worked on.
It is described by Cohen (1990) as the focus of consciousness , holding the information that is being
thought about currently. The model has four components: the central executive, the phonological loop,
the visuo spatial sketchpad, and the episodic buffer.
The central executive is the key, supervisory component of working memory, directing the subsidiary
systems. It decides which incoming information will be allocated attention, as well as coordinating the
activity needed to carry out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, it is relevant to both traditional STM tasks and activities such as verbal reasoning,
comprehension, and mental arithmetic.
An advantage of the working memory model is that it explains certain neurological results in a way
that the multi store model cannot. For example, Patient KF (Warrington Shallice, 1974) had verbal
difficulties, however his short term memory for visual information and meaningful sounds (such as a
phone ringing) were unaffected. The model explains these results. An impaired phonological loop can
account for the verbal impairment, and the fact that his memory for visual information works well can
be explained by an intact visuo spatial sketchpad.
A disadvantage of the working memory model is that, although it is a major improvement on the multi
store model, it is oversimplified. There are several other types of information that are processed and
briefly stored, however the model does not represent

  • 4. Resonant Characteristics Of The Acoustic Theory Of Speech... According to the acoustic theory of speech production, what we know to be speech output results from a source of sound energy (e.g. the larynx) modulated by a transfer (filter) function which is determined by the shape of the resonator (vocal tract). This model, often referred to as the source filter theory of speech production, originates from the works of Gunner Fant (1960, 1980) and Stevens and House (1955, 1961) (Haskins Laboratory, Yale University 2008). Source filter theory puts forth two distinct and important ideas; one is that the specific articulatory postures that the vocal tract takes on results in the production of specific sounds, which is why speakers can deduce the shape of the vocal tract upon hearing a speech sound. The other is that while the source may produce a sound, the filter will select only a portion of the harmonics within that sound to be amplified and issued from the mouth (Behrman, A. 2017). Resonant Characteristics of the Vocal Tract Because source filter theory breaks up speech production into the resonator and the source, it allows us the advantage of assessing the contributions of each. When examining the glottal source, it is important to keep in mind its acoustic characteristics. The glottal source, perceived as a buzzing noise when not filtered through a resonator, has a fundamental frequency and corresponding harmonics. The first characteristic to consider would be whether the sound is voiced or voiceless. When a sound is voiced, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Gerald Graff And Rakoff s They Say I Say In chapter seven of They Say / I Say, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein address how to improve a topic through connectivity, and how the topic relates to the reader. They do so by introducing the questions so what? and who cares? which, in their view, make for a more stimulating paper. Even if an issue is obviously consequential, Birkenstein and Graff argue, the writer should go as far as possible in answering those questions (100). One way the writer can do this is by refutibg the standard opinion of their topic (97). Judge Jed Rakoff does precisely that in his article, Why Innocent People Plead Guilty. He begins by noting that the criminal justice system bears little resemblance to what the Founding Fathers contemplated . . . [and] what the average American believes. Due to plea bargains, jury trials in the United States are exceedingly rare, in spite of constitutional provisions for a speedy and public trial. If there is no trial, there can be no speedy trial, and that means that this constitutional right, for most, is a myth. But while this revelation complicates and adds relevance to Rakoff s topic, he also asks What s wrong with that? a variation of so what? In answer to this question, he says that plea bargains are secret negotiations that invite[] arbitrary results. Both innocent and guilty defendants, in other words, are placed in the same pot, and the goal is to achieve the appearance of fairness, not the realization of it. Considering ninety seven percent of federal convictions are the results of guilty pleas (Rakoff), that is a haunting injustice. Journalist Antonia Malchik takes a similar approach to in The End of Walking. The right to walk, as Malchik calls it, might not seem as important as the right to a fair trial, but she is explicit about the cost. Walking, Malchik observes, is an interconnection of cognitive processes that can have a significant impact on everything from cardiovascular disease to muscle atrophy. Yet walking as way of life is more out of reach than ever. For instance, in 2013, more than 4,700 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes (Malchik). Malchik further emphasizes the seriousness of the situation by including a relevant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Characteristics Of Community Psychology Richard Henry PSY 324E October 14, 2017 A Collective Mind Before we can discuss what community psychology is, we must understand what a community is. We often view a community as a collective or randomized people, some happen to work close by, some happen to like the housing market and decided to raise a family, and some may have been in the same town for their whole lives, feeling no interest to look beyond. What is represented here, is the differences within the individuals. No two people have the same exact story, the same upbringing, the same experience. Often times, your neighbor may be nothing like you, yet you may have similarities. The similarities may come from the way you both think politically, to the teams you root for. (you notice he too, has a 12th man sticker plastered on his back windshield) Community psychology is the collection of individuals, their moralities, their viewpoints on the world and the basis in which you collectively live. For the example of different communities, I ll take Portland, Oregon, my new place of residence, versus where I am originally from, Ocean City, New Jersey. Portland is recognized as one of the more inclusive places in the world, a collection of people who look out for each other , wanting everyone to feel both welcome and equal. Using alcohol, I believe the bottle took all his inhibitions away and allowed him to do as he pleased without judging himself. I think there are moments of soberness when he stopped painting and took a step back and looked at his creations. Mansfield captures real life stories, not ones fabricated to appeal to the masses. This story takes place in a café, a couple meets again after 6 years apart. Their meeting emphasizes the women (Vera s) cynical look on love and her sensitive personality. The man exudes arrogance and has a way with words. The differences between the two characters highlight the divergence of their love and the lack of certain personality traits of each character. This unveils one of many reasons why their relationship would come to an end breaking both of their hearts. Vera doesn t talk much in the text, instead we dive deep into her inner thoughts and that s where she expresses her true feelings of the past relationship and unravels her teetering feelings for the man, each topic he brings up reminds her of an unpleasant memory of him from the past but as he talks he turns those horrible memories into good ones, convincing Vera to fall back in love with him. But she was thinking how well she remembered that trick of his the trick of interrupting her and of how it used to exasperate her six years ago (Mansfield, 16). The fact that Mansfield chose to have Vera think how it used to exasperate her this shows that it no longer irritated her by the word choice of used to the man has convinced her that it no longer is a point of irritation for her but something she now finds endearing. ... Zoos give an opportunity for city kids or people to see wild animals. A zoo is a place where animals live in and are put on display for people to view. Zoos travel back to as early as 2500 B.C., when nobility started to collect exotic animals. In Europe, sixteenth century, when early explorers traveled to the New World, they brought home all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures like anteaters and sloths (Sunquist). The first modern zoo, opened in Vienna in 1765, but it was not until the mid to late 1800s that zoos started to become more common. The idea of displaying wild animals to the public in the park was instantly appealing to the rising middle class of the Victorian era (Sunquist). Though some may believe zoos are an unsafe environment for animals, most zoos have benefited animals by educating the public, contributing to the conservation of animals by developing breeding programs or other conservation oriented programs, and also bringing them into a safe environment. Some critics may argue that Zoos are a harmful and inhumane method of commercializing animals. • 25. Four Stages Of Jean Piaget Piaget When Jean Piaget s ideas became widely popularized in the 1960s, the designation of development as a major sub field of psychology soon followed. His cognitive development theory has four major stages, as follows: 1. Sensorimotor stage (birth through age two). The child experiences the world through movement and her five senses. A child is extremely egocentric in this stage and cannot perceive the world from others viewpoints. During the sensorimotor stage children come to develop object permanence. 2. Preoperational stage (ages two to seven). Beginning with the child s learning to speak, this stage sees an increase in children s playing and pretending, primarily through symbolic play and manipulating symbols. Children in this stage continue to have difficulty seeing things from different points of view. The two substages of the preoperational stage are the symbolic function substage and the intuitive thought substage. 3. Concrete operational stage (ages seven to eleven). In this stage children are beginning to think logically and are no longer egocentric. They greatly improve their classification skills and become more aware of logic and conservation. 4. Formal operational stage (ages eleven to sixteen). This stage sees the development of abstract reasoning. Children in this stage develop abstract thought and can conserve and think logically with more facility. Children in the formal operational stage show more skills for problem solving. Piaget described different types of intellectual structures, or schemata, in his work: Behavioral (sensorimotor) schemata organized patterns of behavior that represent and respond to objects and experiences. Symbolic schemata internal mental symbols, including images or verbal codes, used to represent aspects of experience. Operational schemata internal mental activity performed on objects of thought. As Piaget described them schemata are significantly important building blocks of development and are modified by on going experiences. They are continuously being modified or changed and can be a generalized idea based on prior knowledge or experience. Did she teach you how to do math problems when you were two? Recently, I read an issue of Parenting Magazine and found an article on child development. I noticed that in this article, Parker challenges the media s representation on the effectiveness of early childhood development by stating that you should not change how you raise your child based on trivial news articles. Parker lists sources: Newsweek, the Clintons, and books about early development, as causes for parents to go overboard on developing their young children. The point that Parker is trying to get across is that these articles are not reasons for society to change their parental habits. The author is saying that the news articles can not prove one way or the other that teaching your child early in life gives them the advantage. Just because an article says that in some cases child development is effective, it doesn t mean that it is true or appropriate to change the way you are teaching your two year old. Parker s technique is to debunk the idea of these sources, and to get the reader to believe in her side.To further her persuasive article, the author wanted to show that the media can not prove one way or the other that teaching your child early will affect how smart they become in life. Juvenile Delinquents In The Twentieth Century According to Bartollas and Schmalleger (2014), Sigmund Freud, the most famous psychologist of the twentieth century, developed his now famous psychoanalytic theory, which contributed three insights that shaped the handling of juvenile delinquents throughout much of the last century, (pp. 62 63). Freud s model describes personality as a dynamic system guided by three psychological structures: the id, the ego, and the superego. The theory of the atavistic criminal, being born criminal, existed in certain individuals. This mannerism would periodically reappear and lead to crime, because of the primitive impulses that they were likely to possess, (Bartollas Schmalleger, 2014, p.58). Freud once stated, Where id is, there shall ego be (NotableQuotes, n.d, p. 1) According to Freud, most behavior involves activity of all three structures. The id the most primitive of the three structures, is concerned with instant gratification of basic physical needs and urges (Boundless, n.d. p.1). Nitrate And Its Effects On Exercise Abuse In The Human Body Nitrate (NO3 ) supplementation has been widely researched for its effects on exercise performance since Larsen et al 2007 found that it decreased the oxygen cost of submaximal aerobic exercise. The effect of NO3 in the body is tied to the production of nitric oxide (NO), which is an endogenous gas that plays a regulatory role in many processes in the human body, including; blood pressure, calcium handling, mitochondrial biogenesis, excitation coupling contraction, oxidative stress, regulation of blood flow to muscle tissues, and skeletal muscle repair (Stamler Meismer 2001). This increase in exercise tolerance may be able to increase the performance of both moderate and high intensity exercise, but the research is conflicting regarding nitrate s effectiveness on high intensity exercise. Nitrate supplementation seems to be a useful ergogenic aid that could help increase the performance in diverse types of exercise. The most widely researched and documented effects of nitrate intake been its ability to decrease the oxygen cost of submaximal aerobic exercise, at least in moderately trained or sedentary individuals. The first study to discover these findings was conducted by Larsen et al in 2007. They found that the oxygen uptake of moderately fit males while cycling at a moderate intensity (45% 85% VO2max) was reduced by an average of 0.16 L/min 1. The most shocking result of these findings were that it happened without an increase in the formation of blood lactate levels or any changes to heart rate, meaning that the nitrate supplementation did in fact increase muscle efficiency (Larsen et al, 2007). These effects have been most commonly noted in cycling (Larsen et al, 2007; Baily et al 2015, 2010 and 2009) and running (Porcelli et al, 2015). Reducing the oxygen cost of exercise during aerobic activities would benefit greatly in competition, as it would allow an individual to maintain a faster pace at a lower percentage of their VO2max than they previously could, thus theoretically delaying fatigue. • 37. Hard Determinism Vs. Negatives Throughout the years, many different philosophical ideas have been presented to the general populace. One of these ideas, hard determinism, has presented alleged positives and alleged negatives. One alleged negative that stands out to me is that no single person is responsible for their actions, no matter how heinous that action may be. I argue, that throwing morality completely out of the equation, is a genuine negative of hard determinism. In order to explain my thoughts, we must first understand the full meaning of hard determinism. In Holbach s essay on hard determinism, he says, Nevertheless, in spite of the shackles by which he is bound, it is pretended he is a free agent, or that independent of the causes by which he is moved, he determines his own will, and regulates his own condition. 1 He explains that free will is an illusion and that all of our actions are pre determined by prior factors. Prior factors would include: experiences from the past, how one was raised, genetic makeup and so on. No matter what you decide to do, you will never actually have a say in it because everything in your life has led up to that point. For example; if one man is walking down the street and bumps into another man, how the second man reacts will have been predetermined therefore not making him liable for those actions. • 41. The Working Memory Model The working memory model was proposed by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974 as an alternative to Atkinson Shiffrin s multi store model of memory. They argued that the short term memory was not a passive, temporary store used to transfer information to the long term memory. Instead, they suggested that it should instead be regarded as an active store which holds information as it is being worked on. It is described by Cohen (1990) as the focus of consciousness , holding the information that is being thought about currently. The model has four components: the central executive, the phonological loop, the visuo spatial sketchpad, and the episodic buffer.
