My breathing is steady and shallow, the exhales causing slight disturbances in the fog around me,

A True Story and How it Addresses the Rhetoric of Race
As one of the great American authors, Mark Twain is recognized for his unique contributions as a
writer, one of them being his involvements in the racial debates during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Some of his works such as an excerpt from his Autobiography, stories from The Celebrated Jumping
Frog from Calavaras County , Buck Fanshawe s funeral and A True Story have been particularly
included in the selections of The Heath Anthology of American Literature to illustrate the nature of

This drastically reduces the life chances of poor people, queer and trans people, immigrants, and
people of color. In practice, every law system and mainstream law reform effort has attempted to
assign people and groups of people into two categories: who is worthy of a chance at a good life,
and who is not. Spade s proposal of a critical trans politics creates a system in which life chances are
redistributed in a way that gives marginalized groups the opportunity to survive and succeed. Within
the United States government en masse, there are many legal systems that contribute to the uneven
distribution of life chances and thus require dismantling and radical reconstruction. These include
the criminal justice system, the education system, the prison system (also called the prison industrial
complex), the social welfare system, the immigration system, the housing system, the healthcare
system, and the U.S. military. Each of these legal and political systems in some way targets a
specific population within the United States, very often transgender and gender variant people, and
directly reduces that population s life chances. This is the issue that Spade seeks to amend when he
proposes the move toward a critical trans politics.
Changing how large governmental structures function is neither an easy task nor a quick one; it
will require the undoing and unlearning of a very tightly held political and economic system by all

Fear Of Death In Poe s Premature Burial
The party in the Masque of the Red Death can be seen as a result of Prince Prospero s fear of
premature death since his group is locked away in a fantastically decorated abbey, hiding from
the disease festering around them in comfort and security (Poe 319). To be sure, the Prince has
good reason to hide, the plague results in agonizing death for all who contract it (Poe 319).
More likely is that Prospero s motives for his actions have nothing to do with fear of death, and
the disease outside the abbey is just a reason for the Prince to have a party. After all, he does not
sound like someone in fear of death, premature or otherwise; his mood is described as happy and

Because his condition resembles death so closely, Poe is faced with the very real possibility that
he will be buried alive. He describes being buried alive as a fairly common occurrence, (Poe 309
310), strengthening the argument that his actions are a result of true fear of death. How the
two characters end up is important because it allows some insight into how Poe intended to
portray the motivations that lead each character to the situations they found themselves in.
Prospero ends up stabbed in front of all his friends by his own dagger (Poe 322). While Poe
overcomes his fear when he awakens thinking he has been buried alive, resulting in him living a
fuller life (Poe 318). Ralph Waldo Emerson was a Transcendentalist author, so he explored
concepts beyond the scope of science. That is to say, non empirical concepts that cannot be known
through observation, the senses, or experience, without pattern. The concept of beauty is non
empirical because it cannot be fully understood by observation. While a man can see that a rose
is beautiful, or feel the beauty in the weight and smoothness of a strand of pearls, he can never
know that a thing is beautiful by seeing or touching it. This is why Emerson describes beauty as an
eternal fugitive (75) in Ode to Beauty. Emerson s philosophy can be seen as a reaction to the
