The Poem Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy
The poem Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy in relation to diversity alludes to specific aspects of
gender, mainly targeting the female gender perspective and expectations. In the poem, Piercy is
writing about a young girl transitioning from a child to a women and how society and its idea
of beauty affects her. My interpretation of the poem is that the girl is basically crying out for
help saying look I am healthy, intelligent, and strong but no one sees or cares about those things
because the only thing they see when they look at her is her outside appearance and what
society considers to be the flaws that she possesses. Although this was written in 1936 Piercy
accurately describes the feeling of being defined or constricted by society to think, act, and look
a particular way which is similar to that of todays society which is fueled by social media, where
some find personal gratification and self confidence fueled from likes and retweets they receive.
Barbie doll is the perfect title for this poem because for the longest time a Barbie was a sign of
something perfect and beautiful, a toy enjoyed by everyone and a conventional symbol for little
girls all over the United States. Similarly the girl was conforming to be sort of like the Barbie doll
in a way because of societal expectations and the want to be viewed in a particular light by ones
peers.
The beginning of the poem or the first stanza has a lighthearted tone and then as it progresses it
begins to divulge into a deeper

Traditional Forms Of Child Abuse
In today s society people make it very clear about their opinion when it comes to discipline a
child. Most but not every parent believes that every form of child discipline is considered child
abuse. When in fact traditional acts of discipline are more of a teaching lesion rather than straight
child abuse. What people are not aware of is that not every style of discipline works with every
child. Some children listen and/or even learn better with specific punishments. When it comes to
traditional acts of discipline the first technique that comes to any parent is spanking. For the most
part, spanking children is not considered abuse unless the technique is overused and taken too far.
Spanking is one of the best known examples of positive punishmentand it is estimated that around
75 percent of parents in America use spanking as discipline. Georgia s law states that... Show more

By putting the child in time out, it is allowing their child to think about what they did and know
to not make the same mistake again. For a time out session to not be considered child abuse,
there needs to be reasonable boundaries or rules. For example. If a parent has a four year old
and puts them in time out, a reasonable time would be four minutes. Second, the time out area
also needs to be in a spot where the parent can see and monitor their child so they have no way of
hurting them self. Parents don t only use time out at home but in public as well. For example,
when a child shoves another child, the parents first though it to scold them and have them sit by
their side for a few minutes. In no way is the parent trying to isolate their child from their friends
and having fun but instead have them take a few minutes to learn from their mistake and then let
them go back out and play with other children. In all honesty, the timeout session is probably the
safest act of discipline there is out

Summary Of N. Scott Momaday s The Way To Rainy Mountain
Throughout history, the resilience of Native American tribes through the gentrification of their
culture at the hands of the U.S. government is exceptional. In an excerpt from his award winning
autobiography, The Way to Rainy Mountain, author N. Scott Momaday journeys to the Rainy
Mountains to visit his grandmother s grave, emblematic of the spiritual pilgrimage to bring his
ancestral roots to light. Momaday, a knowledgeable author, educator, and artist, addresses his
fellow intellectuals in his . Through the use of stylistically different modes of rhetoric in his
writing, he conveys a ruminative, nostalgic tone, appealing to pathos and evoking sentiment in his
readers. The Way to Rainy Mountain is a composite of poetic wisdom derived from Momaday s
culture, in which he links the survival of his people to the ability to preserve and pass on stories of
their past. Momaday introduces the distinct landscape of the Kiowas origin with rhythm and beauty,
demonstrating his passion for his culture. Through powerful imagery and rhetoric he connects his
readers to the poetry and wisdom that come with his culture s land, history, and customs. In
specific, as he is describing the landscape, he uses an anaphora when he says ...but one hill or one
tree or one man... to show just how isolated that the planes of Oklahoma can truly be. However, the
connotation can be taken positively, as the peacefulness of isolation within nature can connect
people back to their creator. Moreover,

The Property Assessment System
October, 2016 A Response to the Lake County Illinois Study on the Centralization of the Property
Assessment System Prepared by the Lake County Township Assessors This report is intended for
informational purposes only. This report is not an endorsement of any alternative form of
assessment administration in Lake County. This report is also not intended to identify every
operational detail of the options described within. Any move to implement or further explore
options will require additional research. Introduction Lake County conducted an in house study
from March, 2014 to April, 2015 on the centralization of the property assessment system in Lake
County Illinois. The sole recommendation of Lake County was to eliminate local Township
Assessors and consolidate all assessment functions to Lake County. They proposed moving from
the current system of 18 locally elected Township Assessors with an appointed CCAO, to a
centralized system of one appointed county assessor who controlled the whole assessment process.
The study estimated that this centralized assessment process would result in a reduction of $4.4
million dollars in overall county wide costs. This reduction in costs would eliminate the 18 local
assessment offices spread throughout Lake County and only provided for one assessment office in
Waukegan. The initial study by Lake County contained factual errors, an underrepresentation of the
personnel required and acknowledged that taxpayer access would

Aztec Empire
It is safe to say that there have been many empires throughout the world, with most writing their
name into the history books. One of these empires was known as the Aztec Empire, which looks to
carry a little more mystique than the eras that came before. Taking true inspiration from this era in
time, this famous empire has been brought to life by the casino slots game that is simply known as

Radical Feminist Analysis
This paper will analyze, the bill dubbed as the slapping law , in Russia. Using the perspective of
Radical Feminist Thought, I argue that such violence is normalized through the lack of current
public resistance to this crime and contends that women themselves begin to see this type of
treatment as acceptable. Structurally, this paper will begin by providing a concise summary of the
values of Radical feminismto give clarification on the standpoint of this feminist position in

Any society that is committed to equality between the sexes must then be particularly responsive
to crimes that are based on sex or gender. It is that radical feminist theory has impacted society on
both the micro and the macro level, resulting women s movement for equality in bringing social
changes impacting the responses to domestic violence issues. Our popular understanding and legal
approach to domestic violence has shifted dramatically throughout the years. There has been a shift
from the private response, where domestic violence was considered a product of relationship
dysfunction, to a fully public campaign in which the state takes the lead in combating domestic
violence through arrest and prosecution of abusers. This shift, I have argued, reflects a radical
feminist understanding of domestic violence as patriarchal force and was informed by earlier

How Music Can Help Us Find Our Identity Essay
Ones identity is something greatly important to a person. An identity makes us who we are,
combining our nationality, ethnicity, race, class, religion, and gender, a complex mixture that
involves many factors. This is whom we are, what we are made of. One tool to show identity or
more than just show, the means by which identity is created, is music. We constantly hear musical
metaphors such as find your voice or march to the rhythm of your own drum simple putting music
can help us find our identity. Music can construct, represent and portray ones identity, showing
others and our self who we are and what makes our identity.
Coming from a western society, musical identity can often become very clouded. Music is usually
produced for a global audience in western culture and intended to top the charts, meaning it can be
difficult to find one identity in this music. Saying this doesn t mean that music wont play a role in
ones identity in western culture, on contrary music makes its way into many parts of who we are.
From personal experience music has influenced who I spend time with, as a community is created
with people who share musical preferences with myself. Another example comes from the
University of Glasgow, they preformed a number of studies on music and identity, finding that the
music you relate to from your teenage years is music that stays with you throughout your life,
making it a part of your identity. Residing in a western culture, we are familiar with the

Alka Seltzer Temperature Change Lab Results
How does the dissolve rate of the Alka Seltzer tablets change as the temperature of the water
changes? The dissolve rate is being affected by the temperature of the water. Temperature is a
measure of kinetic energy in molecules (NYU). The higher the temperature, the higher the kinetic
energy. Energy is required to create a reaction. Molecules with more energycome into contact with
each other more often. The molecules of the reactants have to come into contact with each other, so
more energy in molecules result in faster dissolving time.
If the temperature of the water increases, the dissolving time of the Alka Seltzer tablet will
decrease. This is because molecules of warmer water contain more energy than molecules of cooler
water. The extra ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of our flaws was that the temperature of the water was not exactly the same when we did the
different trials. The temperatures were slightly off from our recorded value during the
experiments. The change in temperature would affect the time it took for the Alka Seltzer tablet to
dissolve in the water. If there was a direct relationship between water temperature and dissolve
time, we would not be able to see it because the temperatures are off and the dissolve times are not
associated with the correct temperature. Another flaw is that we did not use the same amount of
water throughout the experiment. We used a beaker to measure the water, which did not result in
accurate measurements. The difference in amount of water could result in a difference in reaction
time. The third flaw in the experiment was that during the reaction of the warm water, the water in
the cup overflowed and spilled, bringing some of the Alka Seltzer tablet with it. There were
different amounts of tablet in different areas of the water, which means a different amount of Alka
Seltzer remained inside of the cup in each trial. This difference would mean that data for the warm
water would fluctuate and we would not have accurate

Why On Earth Violet
Why on earth, Violet?
Stewart O nan wrote the short story Why on earth, Violet in 1997. The story is about the
misconception, misinterpretation and misjudgment between children and grown up. It is about
how the adults/grown up misunderstood the children s concern and it always ends in frustration in
grownups. The grownups or her parents misunderstand her gesture.
The narrator and main character is Violet, which feels like we almost can feel what she can see
from her eyes. The text doesn t tell how old Violet is but we can clearly hear that she is just a
child. For example when she saw an old and got scared, then she suddenly hides behind her mother
s legs. She is an innocent and very honest girl. She doesn t really say a lot, but ... Show more

They go to the church and even the story started where they were going to church. The mother also
went to the priest to get some advice about Violet. In the sentence Why on earth, Violet? What
could have compelled you? The father indirectly tells that Violet couldn t have done this by herself,
and again a demon must have been possessed her. It clearly shows that the father is not just an
ordinary Christian.
The main story shows us the difference between children and grown ups. We can determine the
major theme of the text in a different way. The text can define in a very religious way where it
we can see how religious belief can manipulate anyone in a very bad way so easy. On the other
side without these beliefs, we can also just look at this as it like the upbringing and the relationship
between the children and adults. Which as I said before again, they can both misunderstand each
other so easy and can cost to a gigantic frustration for the

restaurant industry. In the restaurant industry the employee turnover rate is between 75 to 80

some sector in the industry could have high turnover than others. The work force characteristics
in the restaurant industry the average is fairly young, majority of the workers are under the age
of 30, and this influences to the high turnover. Low compensation is another reason that the
turnover rate is high. Hourly restaurant employee work make up most of the earnings from tips,
but make low minimum wage. For an example, in California the hourly minimum wage for
tipped employees is $8.00 per hour and servers in Michigan get $2.65 per hour. Restaurant work

Environmental Factors In Poisonwood Bible And Lilac Girls...
During times of conflict, literature has often included the remorseful reactions of civilians. These
themes go forward to show the human s processes to handle grief during times that stress their
mental capability. Throughout a lifetime, many things are gained; experience, wisdom, knowledge,
as well as a sure sense of self. But along with all these great things come regret, guilt, and shame of
past events. Everyone deals with these in different ways, sometimes turning to religion and denial
as coping mechanisms. Each person reacts differently to guilt in response to their environmental
factors. In the literary works, Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolverand Lilac Girls by Martha
Hall Kelly, the authors use a multifaceted point of view to espouse how environmental factors
influence the individuality with how one copes with the burden of guilt. In Poisonwood Bible,
Orleanna is a prime example of how her time in the Congoinfluenced her handling of guilt.
Nathan Price is like a dictator to Orleanna and his daughters forcing them to live in the Congo
and fulfill his missionary work. Orleanna describes her marriage as: By then I was lodged in the
heart of darkness, so thoroughly bent to the shape of marriage I could hardly see any other way to
stand. Like Methuselah I cowered beside my cage, and though my soul hankered after the
mountain, I found, like Methuselah, I had no wings (201). Orleanna is like a slave to Nathan,

Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging Summary
My Jungian Typology is Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging (ESFJ). According to Carl Jung
and Isabel Briggs Myers personality type theory, I enjoy entertaining, giving, and being in
charge. I am also easily hurt and when I feel hurt, it s impossible to hide. I have a hard time
making a decision because I am torn between choosing what is right for others instead of the right
choice for me. I have a good sense of danger and I tend to tread carefully in situations that could
result in negative consequences for others and myself.
I consider the description of my personality Jungian type to be pretty accurate. The only two

be. He is nowhere near as sensitive as I am so I knew his result had to be different. His result is
different, but only in one dimension. He is considered Extraverted Sensing Thinking Judging
(ESTJ); therefore, the only difference was that I was more Feeling than Thinking.
I learned from the Jungian personality assessment that I can handle communicating differently
depending on the topic. Communication is easier for me if the topic involves emotions or
resolving ongoing issues. I can have a hard time communicating if the discussion does not have a
clear direction or solution. I also prefer to be involved in helpful conversation as opposed to a
conversation that does not provide any gains. It is easier for me to retain information when tangible
examples are specified, so that I can relate the information to personal or emotional experience.
The results from the productivity quiz showed that I am productive, but still require some
improvement. There are five elements of being productive which include: organization, attitude,
delegations, information systems, and effective use of systems. The area of organization is where I
could use the most improvement.

They mate at sea then they return to land at night. The mother uses her hand flippers to dig a
circular hole 40 to 50 centimeters deep. When the nest is dug, she starts filling it with soft
shelled eggs until she has placed around 50 to 350 eggs. Some only lay 250 eggs depending on
the species. After she fills the hole with eggs she fills it with sand and makes sure it has a
smooth surface. She then camouflages the nest with grass so it s harder for predators to find. It
takes her about 30 to 60 minutes for the whole process. The mother then returns to the ocean while
the eggs are untended. The turtle gender depends on the temperature of the sand. Lighter sands
make higher temperature so that decreases incubation which makes more female turtles. It is
warmer in the middle of the nest so those sea turtles will most likely be females. Incubation takes
about 50 to 60 days. The eggs hatch together over a short amount of time. The hatchlings tear the
egg apart with their caruncle and an egg tooth. They then dig through the sand. All but one of the
sea turtles will hatch at night which is the Kemp sea turtle. It happens because they are most
endangered. Sea turtles that hatch during the day are more likely to be seen by predators. When
they reach the surface of the nest they go straight to the sea. The smaller the hatchling is the less
likely it will survive. This happens because smaller sea turtles are slower than bigger sea turtles (

a Puritan community, who is forced to submit to public shaming and the vengeful actions of her

which works towards the overall purpose that evil temptation ultimately causes negative outcomes.
Through the utilization of Biblical allusions, Hawthorne conveys the similarities between
Chillingworth and multiple evil figures. He uses the parallel structure of juxtaposition to show the

Similar to the devil, Chillingworth shows a sense of excitement, of the discovery of a new sinner,
because he is now able to torture the person for eternity, rather than forgive their sins similar to a
perceived holy figure. Hawthorne embodies that Chillingworth is accepting these evil feelings due
to his emotions, which show a sense of commitment and attachment. Through the expression of
Chillingworth s emotions and his separation from innocence, Hawthorne emphasizes that the evil
within Chillingworth causes him to desire morally wrong actions, which leads to his personal
obsession towards the temptation to act upon evil. Hawthorne purposely juxtaposes Chillingworth s
self portrayed helpful manner with the reality of his dark intentions in order to reveal the change of
his character. Through Chillingworth s expression of his calm, meditative, scholar like manner, he
disguises himself as an intellect, specifically a doctor, who personally gains comfort from helping

Chillingworth carries out his scheme for revenge by revealing something ugly and evil in his face,
which they had not previously noticed , showing a contradiction between Chillingworth s outermost

Nationalist movements have been present since the start of colonial rule and the eminent failure of
these nationalist movements before the onset of World War Two have not gone un noticed by

How are Literacy, Fluency and Reading Comprehension...
Literacy, fluency and reading comprehension all play a crucial role in determining how learners

give more details about fluency and reading comprehension.
Over a long period of time, the ability of a learner to read educational materials fluently has been

proper educational abilities that can have a lasting impact on the learner s ability. The instructor
can help a learner to succeed in a reading program by offering the learner a chance to decode the
meaning of the words read easily through practice. Pikulski and Chard (2005) argue that reading
fluency can prove to be a vital bridge for a learner to perfect his or her skills in reading
comprehension (p 511). Therefore, the ability of the learner to read the instructional material
fluently is likely to have a direct impact on the same learner s ability to decode the meaning behind
the statement read. Fluency therefore makes it possible for learners to acquire the necessary skills
that can foster their ability to read and understand comprehension easily. Fluency equips a learner
with accurate word recognition abilities that can be central in the way the learner interprets the
meaning that is carried across the literature read. The instructors therefore can help learners
improve on their fluency by offering constant practical reading session, which can give

Major Themes In Brave s Life
Robotics prodigy Hiro lives in the city of San Fransokyo. Next to his older brother, Tadashi, Hiro
s closest companion is Baymax, a robot whose sole purpose is to take care of people. When a
devastating turn of events throws Hiro into the middle of a dangerous plot, he transforms Baymax
and his other friends, Go Go Tamago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred into a band of high tech
heroes. All of them fight to beat the masked man from taking over the entire world.
Some majors themes in the movie are friendship, anger, and creativity. Early on the movie, it is
known that Hiro is a lonely child, his only friends are his brother and his toy robot. After the loss of

He gets mad at Callaghan for what happened to his brother and feels the need to seek revenge on
him. His friends encourage him not to kill Callaghan because of what happened to his brother.
Listening to his friends, Hiro does not kill Callaghan and it turns out to be a great decision that
he made. This theme in this movie is relevant today because many people often feel the need to
seek revenge if something bad was inflicted upon them. For example, when my brother punched
me in the stomach randomly just to inflict harm on me, I felt the natural want to punch him back
for what he has done. In hindsight, it is not good to seek revenge because it just made the
situation worse, both sides wounded after the brawl. While many may believe that seeking
revenge is the way to settle disputes, in many cases, people tend to end up getting hurt like I did
myself. Another moral in the story is friends and family help each other. After the event that
happened to his brother, his family and friends helped comfort him. Baymax, his personal
healthcare robot, diagnoses Hiro and finds out that his emotional health is low, so it prescribes
Hiro with support from his family and friends. On top of that, his friends even fight with him to

The Effects Of Homelessness On The United States
In Stanislaus county the homeless population has grown from 1,156 in 2005 to 1,800 today and
still growing. Modesto had the highest count of homelessness with 983 documented homeless
individuals according to a 2015 Modesto Bee study and sadly, the amount increases as surrounding
areas begin to enforce strict laws. These laws criminalize and relocate homeless folk to our county.
There are no exceptions to the cold reality of homelessness: men, women, children, military
veterans, individuals, and families are included in the rising numbers of homelessness in Stanislaus
County. According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, the leading cause of
homelessness in the United Statesis the lack of affordable housing. Exposing the problems and
cause will allow us to figure out how we can work towards a solution. The answer to diminishing
homelessness is to invest in permanent housing. By working together as a community and devising
a plan, we could reduce and possibly end homelessness in Stanislaus County.
Individuals and families are being kicked from their homes due to the rising costs of living. Some
people can not afford these costs with their annual income and now have forced to the streets or
into homeless shelters. Many people might say that homelessness can never be avoided nor stopped
but there is hope. By creating a monumental moment in effort to end homelessness, New York city
was capable of providing productive results of reducing homelessness in

Summary In The Lottery By Martin Niemoller
What do you think Then Lottery by Shirley Jackson means? I could bet some money that you are
wrong. What about First they came by Martin Niemoller, you know what that means? The plot in
The Lottery is, that you should speak up even if it s the wrong thing to do. The plot in First They
Came is, justice indifference Martin Niemoller. The three claims I have are justice indifference,
standing up may not be the easiest, following the crowd (peer pressure).
Now, the claim is talking about justice indifference. The justice indifference in The Lottery First
they came are similar yet different in its own ways. This is how. In the lottery their justice is the
town s lottery they have a yearly lottery but it s not what you are thinking (most likely) it s not
that you win money, it s that you win rocks. You ask how? Why? What do you mean by rocks?
Well the answers to that is, how? They don t do money but rocks and what so they do with the
rocks? They throw them at you, why thought? Because it s their towns tradition. The indifference in
the Lottery is that you expect yourself or someone else to win money not rocks thrown at you to
your death. Now the justice in First they came is that he/she was not helping others and the justice
in that was that he/she got no one to help them out. The indifference is that you expect someone or
anyone to help you out in the time in need but you have to do something in return. In both of these
stories you expect something else then what you really got.
What do you think of when someone says standing up ? Do you think it is an easy thing to do or
hard or a little bit of both? We all have different answers but let s just say it s not ALWAYS the
easiest thing to do. In the Lottery Tessie is the one to stand up but it s not easy because she is by
herself. No one is on her side. She tries to stick up for herself bur that was the first time she stuck
up for the lottery she never stuck up of anyone else so who do you know would help her out right
now. Same goes for first they came . The Nazis are going after Jews but this person is not a Jew so
they don t worry about it so they don t stick up for the Jews being taken away. Once that person is
being taken

Face pale with terror, Adam s shaky hand moved to switch on the bedside lamp. Images of Fire

Negative Effects Of Heavy Metal Music
Many Teens and adults don t understand how harmful music can be. It has a very big effect on
us in a good way like calming us down, or the bad way like making us more aggressive by
listening to metal. People these days listen more to music than to anything else. It is a big
problem, for a lot of people because, the songs that today s teens like having a lot of cursing,
violence and thing like that. Most young people have a big influence on music lyrics. Music
like heavy metal and similar styles have a bad effect on the person that is listening to it. Also
calm music and good lyrics, can calm a person down, make him relaxed, and get him a great
feeling for the rest of the day. Most people will say that music is a big part of their live, and when
we live with the music we are listening to it so that we can look like the image that the songis
giving. Whether it s a good image or not.
Music lyrics in heavy metal and styles that are very similar, have a bad influence that will make us
get angry quickly, and lose our temper more often. There is evidence, however, that heavy a music
subculture particularly heavy metal music can signal problems. According to the Journal of the
American Medical Association, Teenage immersion into a rock subculture may be primarily
symptomatic of alienation and hostility toward adult society. The music may be both a portrait of
their alienation and an unflattering reflection of their perception of moral and ethical duplicity of
adult society.

Literacy, Numeracy and ICT help and impacts on my teaching assistant role at my school.
All teachers and their assistants are required to have the literacy, numeracy and ICT knowledge,
understanding and personal skills. This will equip us to develop inclusive approaches to addressing
the literacy, numeracy and ICT needs of our pupils.
I believe I know how to find information from books and know how to use the Internet efficiently

prepare appropriate maths resources and organize the group work or work with certain individuals.
I often need to repeat teacher s instructions to re enforce what pupils should be able to achieve and
maybe introduce follow on tasks to extend learning of the more able pupils. I feel, I still have a lot
to learn in Numeracy department, partly due to the fact that I was not educated in the UK and the
strategies for some mathematical activities are solved very differently here that I would had been

I can pick right resources for their activities like number lines, numbers squares, counter and on.

A Special Last Night By Diane Sawyer
Most of the humans in the world live on just a couple of dollars a day. In fact, I watched a special
last night where Diane Sawyer exposes the startling working middle class struggle in America. The
show followed several middle class Americans struggling to support their families and trying to
make ends meet. The recent economic struggles have seen the layoffof several employees in
companies and even some in public service. It is, however, significant to realize that since every
business and or sector is different, there must be various criteria used when laying off employees.
The general rule is that it must be justified and fairness considered across the board. You would
apply organizational planning, theories of human motivation,... Show more content on

Therefore, because of prioritized staffing, I will reduce the other departments carefully
considering the work done by each department. The focus for layoff would be in certain job
positions like secretary or assistant. Laying off individual police Captain s secretaries might not
be a popular decision and could cause more work for some of the departmental leaders, but that
would be the first resource to lose. That means if there are five secretaries or assistants, I will lay
off four of them and leave only one. Making that position for the entire department and not just one
indivdual. I would eliminate the position of office messenger because most of the communications
happen online and most departments have Wi Fi. Another thought is to offer and early retirement
option. Early retirement could hopefully generate some stimulus, and it may be able to get at least
three to four officers to retire early. Offering early retirement can identify persons willing to take
retirement and give them a retirement package with full benefits (George, 2003). Thereby ensuring
federal laws of age discrimination are not a factor.
Completing the plan takes insight. You must be a realist and deal with the ethical issues that may
arise. It is most certain that in any working environment, especially if you have been there a while,
you tend to build close and trusting relationships with your coworkers. Even as a leader you have
those employees that stand out. It is also

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence I have read Patrick Marshall s Artificial Intelligence: Can smart machines
replace humans? The article discusses the effect of AI on employment, war and human control,
and whether or not it can simulate human intelligence. It gives a background on how AI started,
how the military uses it, and how it is used in everyday civilian life. Two significant points are
stated by the author. First, AI has yet to be imbued with accurate human like nature. Second, the
military has started using AI and robotics to help reduce the number of human soldiers lost in
wars. I believe AI has made great strides since it was created and development should continue to
advance the state of the net. Although, there are consequences to every good idea. The first
signs of AI appeared in the 50s after Konrad Zuse invented the first programmable computer. At a
conference in Dartmouth, scientists decided to research how they could bring every type of
learning into an advanced state so that a machine can emulate it. The first robotic produced was
a mobile robot called Shakey. When a recession hit in the 70s, funding for AI projects was cut
short. In the 90s AI research skyrocketed as new software was developed and AI became smarter.
Despite the military use of AI, there are many around us in everyday life. Banks use AI to help
find fraud credit cards. Security companies are using it to identify facial features and spot criminal
activity. Several car companies now use AI on

Economics of Carbon Emissions and Climate Change
Economics of Carbon Emissions and Climate Change The economics of climate change is a very
controversial and disputed. To even discuss what should be done economists have to either state
whether or not global warming and climate change exist. According to the CATO article, Climate
Change vs. Climate Models (Michaels and Knappenberger, 2013), The models estimate of the
increase in temperature resulting from a doubling of carbon dioxideconcentration may simply be
too high. As questioned in the article, is there such thing as climate change? Next, if climate change
does exist, are carbon emissions a relevant cause of such a phenomena? With all of these questions
at hand, how do we deal or cope with the current environmental state through economic means?
Does climate change exist? According to the U.S. Global Research Program (USGRP), climate
change does exist. Not in the sense of immediate and drastic changes in the climate, but a gradual
fluctuation in temperatures that have been gathered since the early 1900 s. The empirical data that
has been gathered shows a steady increase in the mean maximum temperature recorded in the
Canadian Climate Change Model which is the basis on the 2000 U.S. National Assessment of
Climate Change. The original model generated had a sine like pattern with a .342В°C difference
between the highest crest and lowest trough. This was then proven an unworthy model when the
actual empirical data was recorded with a .169В°C difference. There was

The Solid Power Of Discrimination
The solid power of discrimination in modern Mexico stems from the construction of Mexican
society during the Spanish colonization in the 1500 s. One of the most powerful weapons
concealed by the European during the Conquest was hegemony. Hegemony is a basic principle of
social control, in which a ruling class dominates others ideologically, with a minimum of physical
force, by making its dominance seem natural and inevitable (Chasteen, 2001). Thus, by using
hegemony, the Spaniard convinced the native peoples of America to accept their place below the
Spaniards and forced them to see the conquerors as superior beings worthy of obedience. By
establishing their superiority, the Spaniards were able to control and dominate the indigenous
people, forcing the Spanish culture, religion, and language onto the population. As a result,
indigenous people started to distance themselves from their roots and their own people, creating a
damaging prejudice and bigotry that has been passed down through generations in Mexican
families. Indigenous people turned against each other. They mixed with the Spaniards creating
new castes, dividing the people and providing them with power and social status based on the
lightness of their skin. This feeling exists even today, white skinned people are seen as more
honest and trustworthy, thus deserving privileges and power; while the darker skinned people are
seen as a resemblance of the indigenous people indicating inferiority and implying a need to

Horse Behavior Analysis
Deemed the most dangerous animal veterinary students must work with, horse behavior is often
misunderstood among even the most well versed horsemen (Gronqvist, Rogers, Gee, Martinez,
Bolwell, 2017). Equines have a complex range of emotions which are expressed through specific
body language well known to owners. Sometimes these aggressive and/or anxious actions can show
up suddenly which leaves caretakers confused and looking for a solution. The behaviors specifically
include standoffish movements, biting, kicking, pinning ears back, and other similar actions. Not
only can this sudden change in demeanor be concerning, but it can also be a hazard to anyone
around the animal. These outbursts can be triggered by situations such as past experiences,... Show

This would be a specified amount of exercise through riding, and ground care such as grooming
and hand grazing. The dependent variable is the observed demeanor which is ranked on the
behavior scale that ranges from one (complacent), to seven (vicious). This scale system is
formulated based off of groupings of body language and how dangerous they are to potential
handlers. Data on temperament is recorded daily with a point value from the scale awarded to each
horse at the end of each encounter. When averaged, a decreasing weekly score suggests that the
animal s behavior is less aggressive over time. Therefore, the demeanor of the animal is judged to
be improving. Any aggression seen in the pasture is not be taken in to account since this is deemed
naturalistic within a herd. During this study, I am assuming that the horses are receiving similar
amounts of attention. Also, I will assume that the animals are not acting out in response to another
issue, such as a hormonal imbalance or mating. In this way, results will suggest that the behavior is
not psychological (in other words, related to emotion), but instead physiological (medical). I expect
internal validity since these animals are not giving any specific treatment currently. Any specific
change in behavior indicates a causal relationship among the variables. One consideration is that my
sample size is small, but this is not uncommon when dealing with studies in the equine field.
Another is that some animals may have past psychological damage since many are rescues. It is
possible that aggression is in response to unknown problems (masked medical issues) that have no
relation to behavior. This would mean that attention would not provoke a change. As a final
consideration, the study would take place during mating season which could cause some natural
aggression. A Kennesaw Mountain High School IRB

In The Time Of The Butterflies Analysis

The Song By Justin Vernon
In the first stanza, the artist, Justin Vernon, wishes for a thinned out and broken love to heal.
Vernon asserts that he is deeply hurt in regard to his partner not being who she pretended to be.
The pouring of salt mentioned in the second line is parallel with this theme because many people
revere salt for its healing and preservative properties. Ultimately, Vernon believes this
metaphorical salt can fix and preserve his relationship as if nothing had ever gone wrong. A veneer
covers something s true nature and, in this context, veneer refers to the face, or fake persona, the
artist s partner put on for him. When this veneer crumbles, and the artist realizes things were not as
they seemed, the artist suffers severely; he almost feels as if he s been physically harmed. The sink
containing blood and crushed veneer exemplifies the artist s unsuccessful attempts to wash away
the hurt and brokenness he is experiencing due the revelation that everything is not as it seemed.
Vernon now speaks of wanting to be free from this toxic relationship, but also admits obtaining this
freedom is not a painless undertaking. Ropes bind substances together, and in this situation, they

Protecting The Rights Of Minority Groups
Democratic societies are often faced with the issue of having to find a balance between the
preservation of liberty rights, and protecting human rights and promoting equality. As a liberal
society, we must protect the liberty right to freedom of expression; however, being a liberal society
also means that there ought to be a responsibility to protect vulnerable minorities from being
harmed by hate speech. As a result of competing rights, the state often faces the difficult task of
determining when one right trumps the other. In this essay, I will discuss and defend the reasons
why we must restrict certain types of hate speech the kind that assaults our dignity, and is harmful.
Moreover, I will discuss and defend why we must protect the rights of minority groups, and how
doing so can contribute to the greater good of society.
To protect the rights of minority groups, governments must use hate speech laws to shield them
from harms, such as verbal violations and assaults to their dignity, based on their gender, race,
disability or religious affiliations. Harm is caused when hate speech produces a sense of fear,
humiliation, and a belief that one is unwanted in the community. While people possess the right to
freedom of thought, the right to be sovereign in determining their own beliefs and conclusions, as
well as the freedom to hate a particular group, minorities should also have the right to be protected
and free of harm caused by certain types of hate speech, and the

Bending of Beam Lab Report Essay
1. Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the bending of a bean when loaded at the center
of its length and examine its deflection when positioned in two different ways, when the flat side of
the beam is support and when the thin side is supported. In addition, try to find linear relationship
between the load applied and the deflection of the beam and comparing the experimental deflection
with the theoretical deflection.
If the load is applied at the mid length a=b=L/2 then mid span deflection is: Оґ = PL3/(48EI).
Where P is the applied force, L is the length of beam, E is the modulus of elasticity of aluminum,

Case II: The beam was turned around in such way that the shortest side of the cross section is on
the support. The steps described in Case I was repeated and data was recorded.
4. Results:
Following tables and graphs show the result of the experiment. The tables will demonstrate the
experimental and theoretical deflection for each case. The graphs will show the relationship
between the load applied and deflection, in addition to compare the experimental deflection and
theoretical deflection.

Race, Ethnicity And Gender
Diversity is increasing in the western countries rapidly, hence it leads to discrimination in race,
ethnicity and gender. The question that arises is about fairness, appropriateness and equality
between among races and ethnicities. The paper is focused determining whether offenders are
discriminated because their racein parole decision making process. Parole is permanently or
temporarily release from prison or from offender s sentence. There are three types of parole
releases: discretionary release, mandatory and unconditional release. The primary focus will be on
discretionary release and what factors come to play when board members make a decision for a
parole. There is no definite evidence that there is racismin parole because the results of the studies
are complex. However, racial inequality exists throughout the justice system. Racial inequality
exists in the process of the parole decision making because a race is discriminated when looking
at the legal criteria for parole, assessing future risks to protect the community and when the
system experiences overcrowding. Parole officers are responsible for establishing whether an
inmate is ready for a release and deciding the conditions of the release (Huebner and Bynum
2008: 908). Parole decisions making process are provided with guidelines when making a
decision. The parole officers focus various characteristics of the offender are looked as such as age,

Metropolitan Avenue And The Victorian Era
724 Metropolitan Avenue, which was where I now lived. The three storey champaign house
with a total of twelve bedrooms, six large bathrooms and six small. The expensive house was
decorated in the theme of the Victorian era from the 1830s to 1901, with the main palette
consisting of exquisite and aristocratic furnitures contrasting with pale walls. The furnitures
were predominantly decorative delicate flowers exquisite beauty but equally splendid. Olivia
liked the shades of red and purple, Edward favored paler colors and dark green, so it was pretty
much depending on the area in the house that which colors were the dominant one. The house
also had a small garden where Olivia grew her small vines below a steel framework, over the
years, they formed a small vergola on the corner of the garden, we often sat under it, read on
pleasant summer days or drank hot chocolate on cold winter days, with a small flame we would
grill marshmallows, enjoying the sweet taste of milk, sugar and vanilla melting on the tip of our
tongues. I pushed the front door open, and the scented warmth engulfed me with delighted glee.
Obviously Olivia and Edward were busily preparing for the Thanksgiving dinner, so there would
be no lunch at all but chocolate chip cookies and nonfat milk. I greeted them rather half heartedly
and went to my own quiet attic, eager to finish the last few chapters of Breaking Dawn and to
move on to The Outsider. Olivia did mention about my note stating that I would be back

Lack Of Funding For Presidential Elections
With the upcoming presidential election, it has been interesting to learn about things as they are
actually happening in our country today. Among the many issues that surround the race to the
office, financing the presidential election seems to be a major topic that is always in the public
eye. There are many different views on how the election should be financed but it is hard to tell
how far government fundingand donations can go before democracy is left behind.
After President Nixon and the Watergate controversy in 1971, the United States began to put limits
on how much a candidate could receive and spend within a campaign. In order to enforce fairness
between candidates, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather than government providing millions of dollars for the campaign and putting harsh restricts
on individual donations, I believe that the limits should not be put on the American people but on
the candidates themselves. Spending on the campaign has gotten out of control within the last
decade. Millions of taxpayer dollars are being spend on mobile campaigns, advertisements, and
media exposure. This funding could easily go towards other areas of society, benefiting the very
people that the candidates wish to govern. Rather than directing negative attention, I believe that
candidates should reach out to the public to gain support. Campaigning for presidency should not
be about winning or who raises the most money. Presidency should be about protecting and caring
for the American people. The conduct of campaigns should be monitored in order to limit spending
and to prevent negative advertising towards opposite candidates.
Candidates running for office should depend less on government funding and turn towards the
public for their support. Rather then concerning ourselves with prohibiting the use of soft money
we should control the amount of taxpayers dollars that are being spent. How can we claim that the
use of soft money goes against Democracy when we allow our government to fund

Peer Review Essay
Peer review has always been a key part of learning and teaching irrespective of any language or
classroom. It adds more value to the process of peer learning as it has been acknowledged to be a
useful tool for collaborative learning (Falchikov, 2005; Van den Berg et al., 2006). Peer review
has been put into use for a wide range of subjects and by a large number of practitioners. This is
a formative process where learners evaluate the works produced by their peers for a better
understanding of the concept which eventually enhances the output of the final product
(Somerville, 1993; Topping et al., 2000). Elbow (1968) and Murray (1969) have suggested peer
review to be implemented as a common practice in the writing classrooms since it helps learners...

Brindley Scoffield (1998), Topping et al. (2000) and Nicol Macfarlane‐Dick (2006) believe that
it enhances the learning process by making the learners self confident and independent learners.
Moreover, by improving the state of their critical thinking it aids in doing a better critical
appreciation of their peers works as it can reinforce their knowledge and understanding of the
subject area (Somervell, 1993; Topping, 1998; Dochy, Segers Sluijsmans, 1999, Liu Carless,
2006, Hounsell et al., 2008). In addition, it gives them an opportunity for self reflection (Paulus,
1999; Van Den Berg, Admiraal Pilot, 2006; Cho MacArthur, 2010; Mei Yuan, 2010) which
eventually leads to a more creative, effective and thought provoking assembly of comments for
their peers. Furthermore, it is a significant part for creating a collaborative and participatory
learning environment (Cheng Warren, 1997; Fallows Chandramohan, 2001). At last, as per Hansen
Liu (2005) and Lundstrom Baker (2009) it makes room for the learners to think and realize the
diversities of different perspectives which occur when they evaluate the writings of their peers. As
CLT had been adapted in Bangladesh as the approach of teaching English language, teachers are
seen to provide the instructions on the structures of writing in classroom while most of the students
who are from different backgrounds may not be able to understand the structure of the writing what
they are asked to follow in terms of process writing. From our perspective, we think that peer review
of the students on each other s writing in the classroom can help students develop the knowledge of
the structures and strategies of writing in English rather than simply following the instructions from
the lectures of the

Description Of Microsoft Energy Policy
Description of Microsoft Energy Policy
Microsoft in May 2012 made a commitment to go carbon neutral. The goal is to achieve zero
emissions for their data centres, software development labs, offices, and employee business air
travel in over 100 countries around the world. To achieve this goal, they have implemented an
internal carbon fee policy that places a price on carbon used by the business. This is to drive
energy efficiency, increase the use of renewable energy, thus meeting their goal of reducing their
environmental impact.
Reducing air travel
Key metric: They evaluate a target based on air travel miles per employee.
They are increasing their use of Microsoft collaboration technology as an alternative to travelling
for meetings. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Employees are encouraged to examine low cost alternatives, such as using Lync.
For a richer and more lifelike virtual meeting experience, Microsoft has also invested in
Telepresence rooms in major business hubs such as Seattle, Reading, Beijing, and Hyderabad.
These rooms can provide the feel of a face to face meeting without the cost and time lost due to
travel. There is no cost to the business user to use Telepresence rooms.
Since 2007, increased use of their collaboration products and operational control measures has
helped reduce their carbon footprint from air travel by more than 30,000 metric tons.
Strategic Goal 2
Being green
Microsoft is committed to increasing their purchase of renewable energy and reducing waste and
water use.
Investing in renewable energy and offset projects
Emissions associated with electricity consumption represent a significant portion of their
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Their cloud services will reduce the net energy used as they
absorb computational workloads from less efficient sources. As Microsoft becomes an increasingly
more energy intensive company it is essential that they take measures to reduce the emissions
impact of this energy intensity. They recognise that they will need to look to industry expertise and
research to ensure that they are using the best technology and strategies available.
While the first step is to reduce their consumption through energy conservation and efficiency

What Is The Theme Of Poverty In Charles Dickens
England was rapidly becoming urban society. But in spite of wealth created by industrialization,
people still suffer from poverty. There are many factories but in a miserable state, low wages
and harsh conditions. Industrial Revolution creates a middle class (neither rich nor poor). The
irresponsible of practices of social institutions, as well as the evasion and abuses of
responsibility by individuals, a reality which expresses the general atmosphere of man s isolation
and disintegration. Some novelists, like Dickens has revealed the world of the poor class in his
novels and reinforced his novels with factual details [ that ] .. really shocked the novel readers. 20
of his time. The theme of Povertyis one of the main problems that Charles Dickensfocuses on and
attempts to draw attention of his readers to. Poverty is a serious and economic problem of
English society of the late 19th century. This is why Dickens, chooses it as one of the main
themes of his novel and also tries to describe the appearance of the poor people. They are not
human but they look like animals. The man s face was thin and very pale; his hair and beard were
grizzly, and his eyes were bloodshot. The old woman s face was... Show more content on

The crime against the child, 21 as Dorothy Van Ghent suggests is a theme which arrests Dickens s
attention as early as his second novel, Oliver Twist. What is to be noted in tracing Dickens s
treatment of this theme is that Oliver s suffering is primarily physical and external, but Dickens s
later vision of childhood suffering shows interest in human psychology. Alex Zwerdling maintains
that, by the time Dickens has written Dombey and Son, he has become more interested in the child
deprived of love than food and shelter.

Analysis Of The Film The Flies By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Artistically speaking, this film is beautiful. There was a lot of thought put into every detail from
the actors to the camera shots. The film seems to flow in beautiful manner from one scene to the
next. One piece of art in the film is the use of symbols. Each symbol is delicately placed in order
to make sense to any viewers that can pick up on them. One symbol is Nick s obsession with his
Peace Lily. It represents his obsession with the job. It is the only other thing he cares for because
its needs are simple and by the books. When he breaks it, it is supposed to symbolize his change of
heart; that somebody has taken the place of the lily. Another symbol in the filmis the number 3.
There are 3 murders that take place before people believe Nicholas. There are 3 people Nick tries
to talk to in order to get out of being sent to Sanford. Many lines are repeated 3 times over. This
could be in reference to fairytales always using the number 3, since this plot seems far fetched
like a fairytale. However, it could also be in reference to the trilogy of films that Wright and Pegg
made together. Then, there is the swan symbol. Swans typically symbolize grace, beauty, and
peace. In the film, though, the swans symbolize an overbearing distraction. Nicholas is constantly
surrounded by them in the hotel he stays at, which is rightly called The Swan Hotel . He is also
charged with the task of catching an escaped swan. This causes him to miss many chances to catch
the perpetrators of

How Did The American Slave Trade Affect The West Indies
When most people think of the West Indies, they mainly think of Jamaica, Barbados, and
Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), which also happen to be some of the most popular
vacation areas. Yet, after a flight over to any of these hot spots, one would begin to notice the land
is sprinkled with old sugar plantations, the countries and territories are heavily populated with
African and Creole descendants, and there is a clear division between wealthy communities and
their slum like counterparts. These characteristics were brought upon the West Indies through Sugar
Trade, beginning roughly around the first English settlements in the 1620 s and living through the
passing of the English Slave Trade Act on March 25, 1807. Europeans began... Show more content

The most common of the diseases included smallpox, scurvy, worms, dysentery, and more, which
were paired with the overworking and underfeeding of slaves. The unhealthy states of the slaves
worsened when they were paired with the punishments of masters due to resistance and refusal to
work. In some cases, the situations were so awful that many African slaves attempted to run away;

Lego Argument Essay
When I first saw this picture a lot of thoughts appeared in my head. For example, What kind of
Lego advertisement is this? . It seemed a little out of the ordinary for an advertisement for
children. Those thoughts only appeared when saw at a glance. There is more to this picture than
most people would think. In my opinion, I believe that this picture is too in depth for what I
assume is Legos targeted audience is and that is children. It seems that it is targeted at the parents
of children instead. I also think that this picture seems too dark for a Legos advertisement. When
you usually think of Legos, you think of bright colorful blocks that you can make anything you can
imagine; but instead, you might think of a man holding a gun made from Legos and that is blurred
to his head and stating that your children shouldn t watch too much television. I understand they are
trying to sell something, but this is a little too crazy for an advertisement for a children s toy....

that the man with the gun made from Legos, pointing it to his head symbolizes that imagination is
dead or that his life is actually at a dead end hence the gun and the bottle of

Mercantilism Advantages
Mercantilism is often seen beneficial to Great Britain because it ensured products went directly to
the mother country allowing them to increase power and limit freedom over the colonies.
However, mercantilism helped the colonies since it gave the British a reason to rule with salutary
neglect, allowed the colonists to benefit from triangular trade, and receive protection from the
British navy for no cost at all. Although Mercantilism benefitted both the colonies and Great
Britain in many different ways, it can be seen favorable to Great Britain because mercantilism
justified their control over the colonies and enabled them to believe that wealth is equivalent to
power, and that their economic, military, and political power could be measured by amount of
gold or silver obtain. The British government looked at the colonies as tenants who were expected
to equip products that were necessary in the mother country, including tobacco, sugar, and ship
mast s. Furthermore, they were unable to export certain products, such as woolen cloths or beaver
hats and that they must buy imported manufactured goods exclusively from Britain. The colonists
were also forbidden to indulge in vexatious dreams of economic self sufficiency or self
government. Parliament also passed laws to regulate the mercantile system such as the Navigation
Law of 1650, which was intended for rival Dutch shippers who were trying to get into the
American carrying trade. Following these acts, all commerce going to

  • 2. The Poem Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy The poem Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy in relation to diversity alludes to specific aspects of gender, mainly targeting the female gender perspective and expectations. In the poem, Piercy is writing about a young girl transitioning from a child to a women and how society and its idea of beauty affects her. My interpretation of the poem is that the girl is basically crying out for help saying look I am healthy, intelligent, and strong but no one sees or cares about those things because the only thing they see when they look at her is her outside appearance and what society considers to be the flaws that she possesses. Although this was written in 1936 Piercy accurately describes the feeling of being defined or constricted by society to think, act, and look a particular way which is similar to that of todays society which is fueled by social media, where some find personal gratification and self confidence fueled from likes and retweets they receive. Barbie doll is the perfect title for this poem because for the longest time a Barbie was a sign of something perfect and beautiful, a toy enjoyed by everyone and a conventional symbol for little girls all over the United States. Similarly the girl was conforming to be sort of like the Barbie doll in a way because of societal expectations and the want to be viewed in a particular light by ones peers. The beginning of the poem or the first stanza has a lighthearted tone and then as it progresses it begins to divulge into a deeper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Traditional Forms Of Child Abuse In today s society people make it very clear about their opinion when it comes to discipline a child. Most but not every parent believes that every form of child discipline is considered child abuse. When in fact traditional acts of discipline are more of a teaching lesion rather than straight child abuse. What people are not aware of is that not every style of discipline works with every child. Some children listen and/or even learn better with specific punishments. When it comes to traditional acts of discipline the first technique that comes to any parent is spanking. For the most part, spanking children is not considered abuse unless the technique is overused and taken too far. Spanking is one of the best known examples of positive punishmentand it is estimated that around 75 percent of parents in America use spanking as discipline. Georgia s law states that... For a time out session to not be considered child abuse, there needs to be reasonable boundaries or rules. For example. If a parent has a four year old and puts them in time out, a reasonable time would be four minutes. Second, the time out area also needs to be in a spot where the parent can see and monitor their child so they have no way of hurting them self. Parents don t only use time out at home but in public as well. For example, when a child shoves another child, the parents first though it to scold them and have them sit by their side for a few minutes. In no way is the parent trying to isolate their child from their friends and having fun but instead have them take a few minutes to learn from their mistake and then let them go back out and play with other children. In all honesty, the timeout session is probably the safest act of discipline there is out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Summary Of N. Scott Momaday s The Way To Rainy Mountain Throughout history, the resilience of Native American tribes through the gentrification of their culture at the hands of the U.S. government is exceptional. In an excerpt from his award winning autobiography, The Way to Rainy Mountain, author N. Scott Momaday journeys to the Rainy Mountains to visit his grandmother s grave, emblematic of the spiritual pilgrimage to bring his ancestral roots to light. Momaday, a knowledgeable author, educator, and artist, addresses his fellow intellectuals in his . Through the use of stylistically different modes of rhetoric in his writing, he conveys a ruminative, nostalgic tone, appealing to pathos and evoking sentiment in his readers. The Way to Rainy Mountain is a composite of poetic wisdom derived from Momaday s culture, in which he links the survival of his people to the ability to preserve and pass on stories of their past. Momaday introduces the distinct landscape of the Kiowas origin with rhythm and beauty, demonstrating his passion for his culture. Through powerful imagery and rhetoric he connects his readers to the poetry and wisdom that come with his culture s land, history, and customs. In specific, as he is describing the landscape, he uses an anaphora when he says ...but one hill or one tree or one man... to show just how isolated that the planes of Oklahoma can truly be. However, the connotation can be taken positively, as the peacefulness of isolation within nature can connect people back to their creator. Moreover, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Property Assessment System October, 2016 A Response to the Lake County Illinois Study on the Centralization of the Property Assessment System Prepared by the Lake County Township Assessors This report is intended for informational purposes only. This report is not an endorsement of any alternative form of assessment administration in Lake County. This report is also not intended to identify every operational detail of the options described within. Any move to implement or further explore options will require additional research. Introduction Lake County conducted an in house study from March, 2014 to April, 2015 on the centralization of the property assessment system in Lake County Illinois. The sole recommendation of Lake County was to eliminate local Township Assessors and consolidate all assessment functions to Lake County. They proposed moving from the current system of 18 locally elected Township Assessors with an appointed CCAO, to a centralized system of one appointed county assessor who controlled the whole assessment process. The study estimated that this centralized assessment process would result in a reduction of $4.4 million dollars in overall county wide costs. This reduction in costs would eliminate the 18 local assessment offices spread throughout Lake County and only provided for one assessment office in Waukegan. The initial study by Lake County contained factual errors, an underrepresentation of the personnel required and acknowledged that taxpayer access would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using the perspective of Radical Feminist Thought, I argue that such violence is normalized through the lack of current public resistance to this crime and contends that women themselves begin to see this type of treatment as acceptable. Structurally, this paper will begin by providing a concise summary of the values of Radical feminismto give clarification on the standpoint of this feminist position in analysis of the current event. Our popular understanding and legal approach to domestic violence has shifted dramatically throughout the years. There has been a shift from the private response, where domestic violence was considered a product of relationship dysfunction, to a fully public campaign in which the state takes the lead in combating domestic violence through arrest and prosecution of abusers. • 8. How Music Can Help Us Find Our Identity Essay Ones identity is something greatly important to a person. An identity makes us who we are, combining our nationality, ethnicity, race, class, religion, and gender, a complex mixture that involves many factors. This is whom we are, what we are made of. One tool to show identity or more than just show, the means by which identity is created, is music. We constantly hear musical metaphors such as find your voice or march to the rhythm of your own drum simple putting music can help us find our identity. Music can construct, represent and portray ones identity, showing others and our self who we are and what makes our identity. Coming from a western society, musical identity can often become very clouded. Music is usually produced for a global audience in western culture and intended to top the charts, meaning it can be difficult to find one identity in this music. Saying this doesn t mean that music wont play a role in ones identity in western culture, on contrary music makes its way into many parts of who we are. From personal experience music has influenced who I spend time with, as a community is created with people who share musical preferences with myself. Another example comes from the University of Glasgow, they preformed a number of studies on music and identity, finding that the music you relate to from your teenage years is music that stays with you throughout your life, making it a part of your identity. • 9. Alka Seltzer Temperature Change Lab Results How does the dissolve rate of the Alka Seltzer tablets change as the temperature of the water changes? The dissolve rate is being affected by the temperature of the water. Temperature is a measure of kinetic energy in molecules (NYU). The higher the temperature, the higher the kinetic energy. Energy is required to create a reaction. Molecules with more energycome into contact with each other more often. The molecules of the reactants have to come into contact with each other, so more energy in molecules result in faster dissolving time. If the temperature of the water increases, the dissolving time of the Alka Seltzer tablet will decrease. This is because molecules of warmer water contain more energy than molecules of cooler water. The extra ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of our flaws was that the temperature of the water was not exactly the same when we did the different trials. The temperatures were slightly off from our recorded value during the experiments. The change in temperature would affect the time it took for the Alka Seltzer tablet to dissolve in the water. If there was a direct relationship between water temperature and dissolve time, we would not be able to see it because the temperatures are off and the dissolve times are not associated with the correct temperature. Another flaw is that we did not use the same amount of water throughout the experiment. We used a beaker to measure the water, which did not result in accurate measurements. The difference in amount of water could result in a difference in reaction time. The third flaw in the experiment was that during the reaction of the warm water, the water in the cup overflowed and spilled, bringing some of the Alka Seltzer tablet with it. There were different amounts of tablet in different areas of the water, which means a different amount of Alka Seltzer remained inside of the cup in each trial. This difference would mean that data for the warm water would fluctuate and we would not have accurate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story is about the misconception, misinterpretation and misjudgment between children and grown up. It is about how the adults/grown up misunderstood the children s concern and it always ends in frustration in grownups. The grownups or her parents misunderstand her gesture. The narrator and main character is Violet, which feels like we almost can feel what she can see from her eyes. • 12. Environmental Factors In Poisonwood Bible And Lilac Girls... During times of conflict, literature has often included the remorseful reactions of civilians. These themes go forward to show the human s processes to handle grief during times that stress their mental capability. Throughout a lifetime, many things are gained; experience, wisdom, knowledge, as well as a sure sense of self. But along with all these great things come regret, guilt, and shame of past events. Everyone deals with these in different ways, sometimes turning to religion and denial as coping mechanisms. Each person reacts differently to guilt in response to their environmental factors. In the literary works, Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolverand Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly, the authors use a multifaceted point of view to espouse how environmental factors influence the individuality with how one copes with the burden of guilt. In Poisonwood Bible, Orleanna is a prime example of how her time in the Congoinfluenced her handling of guilt. Nathan Price is like a dictator to Orleanna and his daughters forcing them to live in the Congo and fulfill his missionary work. Orleanna describes her marriage as: By then I was lodged in the heart of darkness, so thoroughly bent to the shape of marriage I could hardly see any other way to stand. The mother uses her hand flippers to dig a circular hole 40 to 50 centimeters deep. When the nest is dug, she starts filling it with soft shelled eggs until she has placed around 50 to 350 eggs. Some only lay 250 eggs depending on the species. After she fills the hole with eggs she fills it with sand and makes sure it has a smooth surface. She then camouflages the nest with grass so it s harder for predators to find. It takes her about 30 to 60 minutes for the whole process. The mother then returns to the ocean while the eggs are untended. The turtle gender depends on the temperature of the sand. Lighter sands make higher temperature so that decreases incubation which makes more female turtles. It is warmer in the middle of the nest so those sea turtles will most likely be females. Incubation takes about 50 to 60 days. The eggs hatch together over a short amount of time. The hatchlings tear the egg apart with their caruncle and an egg tooth. They then dig through the sand. All but one of the sea turtles will hatch at night which is the Kemp sea turtle. It happens because they are most endangered. Sea turtles that hatch during the day are more likely to be seen by predators. When they reach the surface of the nest they go straight to the sea. The smaller the hatchling is the less likely it will survive. This happens because smaller sea turtles are slower than bigger sea turtles ( Life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Similar to the devil, Chillingworth shows a sense of excitement, of the discovery of a new sinner, because he is now able to torture the person for eternity, rather than forgive their sins similar to a perceived holy figure. Hawthorne embodies that Chillingworth is accepting these evil feelings due to his emotions, which show a sense of commitment and attachment. Through the expression of Chillingworth s emotions and his separation from innocence, Hawthorne emphasizes that the evil within Chillingworth causes him to desire morally wrong actions, which leads to his personal obsession towards the temptation to act upon evil. Hawthorne purposely juxtaposes Chillingworth s self portrayed helpful manner with the reality of his dark intentions in order to reveal the change of his character. Through Chillingworth s expression of his calm, meditative, scholar like manner, he disguises himself as an intellect, specifically a doctor, who personally gains comfort from helping Reverend Dimmesdale (Hawthorne 112). Hawthorne portrays a change that takes place as Chillingworth carries out his scheme for revenge by revealing something ugly and evil in his face, which they had not previously noticed , showing a contradiction between Chillingworth s outermost appearance (Hawthorne 112). This paper will review a number of scholarly literatures that give more details about fluency and reading comprehension. Over a long period of time, the ability of a learner to read educational materials fluently has been taken as the most thorough learning method through which the learner can acquire literacy. Kuhn, Schwanenflugel and Meisinger (2010) argue that reading fluency should not only focus on automatic word recognition as a way to assess the ability of a learner (p. 231). The instructor can help a learner to succeed in a reading program by offering the learner a chance to decode the meaning of the words read easily through practice. Pikulski and Chard (2005) argue that reading fluency can prove to be a vital bridge for a learner to perfect his or her skills in reading comprehension (p 511). Therefore, the ability of the learner to read the instructional material fluently is likely to have a direct impact on the same learner s ability to decode the meaning behind the statement read. What about First they came by Martin Niemoller, you know what that means? The plot in The Lottery is, that you should speak up even if it s the wrong thing to do. The plot in First They Came is, justice indifference Martin Niemoller. The three claims I have are justice indifference, standing up may not be the easiest, following the crowd (peer pressure). Now, the claim is talking about justice indifference. The justice indifference in The Lottery First they came are similar yet different in its own ways. This is how. In the lottery their justice is the town s lottery they have a yearly lottery but it s not what you are thinking (most likely) it s not that you win money, it s that you win rocks. You ask how? Why? What do you mean by rocks? Well the answers to that is, how? They don t do money but rocks and what so they do with the rocks? They throw them at you, why thought? Because it s their towns tradition. The indifference in the Lottery is that you expect yourself or someone else to win money not rocks thrown at you to your death. Now the justice in First they came is that he/she was not helping others and the justice in that was that he/she got no one to help them out. The indifference is that you expect someone or anyone to help you out in the time in need but you have to do something in return. In both of these stories you expect something else then what you really got. What do you think of when someone says standing up ? Do you think it is an easy thing to do or hard or a little bit of both? We all have different answers but let s just say it s not ALWAYS the easiest thing to do. In the Lottery Tessie is the one to stand up but it s not easy because she is by herself. No one is on her side. She tries to stick up for herself bur that was the first time she stuck up for the lottery she never stuck up of anyone else so who do you know would help her out right now. The article discusses the effect of AI on employment, war and human control, and whether or not it can simulate human intelligence. It gives a background on how AI started, how the military uses it, and how it is used in everyday civilian life. Two significant points are stated by the author. First, AI has yet to be imbued with accurate human like nature. Second, the military has started using AI and robotics to help reduce the number of human soldiers lost in wars. I believe AI has made great strides since it was created and development should continue to advance the state of the net. Although, there are consequences to every good idea. The first signs of AI appeared in the 50s after Konrad Zuse invented the first programmable computer. At a conference in Dartmouth, scientists decided to research how they could bring every type of learning into an advanced state so that a machine can emulate it. The first robotic produced was a mobile robot called Shakey. When a recession hit in the 70s, funding for AI projects was cut short. In the 90s AI research skyrocketed as new software was developed and AI became smarter. Despite the military use of AI, there are many around us in everyday life. • 36. The Solid Power Of Discrimination The solid power of discrimination in modern Mexico stems from the construction of Mexican society during the Spanish colonization in the 1500 s. One of the most powerful weapons concealed by the European during the Conquest was hegemony. Hegemony is a basic principle of social control, in which a ruling class dominates others ideologically, with a minimum of physical force, by making its dominance seem natural and inevitable (Chasteen, 2001). Thus, by using hegemony, the Spaniard convinced the native peoples of America to accept their place below the Spaniards and forced them to see the conquerors as superior beings worthy of obedience. By establishing their superiority, the Spaniards were able to control and dominate the indigenous people, forcing the Spanish culture, religion, and language onto the population. As a result, indigenous people started to distance themselves from their roots and their own people, creating a damaging prejudice and bigotry that has been passed down through generations in Mexican families. Indigenous people turned against each other. They mixed with the Spaniards creating new castes, dividing the people and providing them with power and social status based on the lightness of their skin. This feeling exists even today, white skinned people are seen as more honest and trustworthy, thus deserving privileges and power; while the darker skinned people are seen as a resemblance of the indigenous people indicating inferiority and implying a need to ... • 37. Horse Behavior Analysis Deemed the most dangerous animal veterinary students must work with, horse behavior is often misunderstood among even the most well versed horsemen (Gronqvist, Rogers, Gee, Martinez, Bolwell, 2017). Equines have a complex range of emotions which are expressed through specific body language well known to owners. Sometimes these aggressive and/or anxious actions can show up suddenly which leaves caretakers confused and looking for a solution. The behaviors specifically include standoffish movements, biting, kicking, pinning ears back, and other similar actions. Not only can this sudden change in demeanor be concerning, but it can also be a hazard to anyone around the animal. These outbursts can be triggered by situations such as past experiences,... The dependent variable is the observed demeanor which is ranked on the behavior scale that ranges from one (complacent), to seven (vicious). This scale system is formulated based off of groupings of body language and how dangerous they are to potential handlers. Data on temperament is recorded daily with a point value from the scale awarded to each horse at the end of each encounter. When averaged, a decreasing weekly score suggests that the animal s behavior is less aggressive over time. Therefore, the demeanor of the animal is judged to be improving. Any aggression seen in the pasture is not be taken in to account since this is deemed naturalistic within a herd. During this study, I am assuming that the horses are receiving similar amounts of attention. Also, I will assume that the animals are not acting out in response to another issue, such as a hormonal imbalance or mating. In this way, results will suggest that the behavior is not psychological (in other words, related to emotion), but instead physiological (medical). I expect internal validity since these animals are not giving any specific treatment currently. Any specific change in behavior indicates a causal relationship among the variables. One consideration is that my sample size is small, but this is not uncommon when dealing with studies in the equine field. Another is that some animals may have past psychological damage since many are rescues. It is possible that aggression is in response to unknown problems (masked medical issues) that have no relation to behavior. This would mean that attention would not provoke a change. As a final consideration, the study would take place during mating season which could cause some natural aggression. A Kennesaw Mountain High School IRB ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The Song By Justin Vernon In the first stanza, the artist, Justin Vernon, wishes for a thinned out and broken love to heal. Vernon asserts that he is deeply hurt in regard to his partner not being who she pretended to be. The pouring of salt mentioned in the second line is parallel with this theme because many people revere salt for its healing and preservative properties. Ultimately, Vernon believes this metaphorical salt can fix and preserve his relationship as if nothing had ever gone wrong. A veneer covers something s true nature and, in this context, veneer refers to the face, or fake persona, the artist s partner put on for him. When this veneer crumbles, and the artist realizes things were not as they seemed, the artist suffers severely; he almost feels as if he s been physically harmed. The sink containing blood and crushed veneer exemplifies the artist s unsuccessful attempts to wash away the hurt and brokenness he is experiencing due the revelation that everything is not as it seemed. Vernon now speaks of wanting to be free from this toxic relationship, but also admits obtaining this freedom is not a painless undertaking. Ropes bind substances together, and in this situation, they symbolize the people are tied to those that they love. The artist does not want to feel bound to this person anymore, and he desires to be free to love another. However, this freedom doesn t seem to be attainable as the artist explains this order s tall, a phrase commonly used to describe an arduous task. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Protecting The Rights Of Minority Groups Democratic societies are often faced with the issue of having to find a balance between the preservation of liberty rights, and protecting human rights and promoting equality. As a liberal society, we must protect the liberty right to freedom of expression; however, being a liberal society also means that there ought to be a responsibility to protect vulnerable minorities from being harmed by hate speech. As a result of competing rights, the state often faces the difficult task of determining when one right trumps the other. In this essay, I will discuss and defend the reasons why we must restrict certain types of hate speech the kind that assaults our dignity, and is harmful. Moreover, I will discuss and defend why we must protect the rights of minority groups, and how doing so can contribute to the greater good of society. To protect the rights of minority groups, governments must use hate speech laws to shield them from harms, such as verbal violations and assaults to their dignity, based on their gender, race, disability or religious affiliations. Harm is caused when hate speech produces a sense of fear, humiliation, and a belief that one is unwanted in the community. While people possess the right to freedom of thought, the right to be sovereign in determining their own beliefs and conclusions, as well as the freedom to hate a particular group, minorities should also have the right to be protected and free of harm caused by certain types of hate speech, and the ... The film seems to flow in beautiful manner from one scene to the next. One piece of art in the film is the use of symbols. Each symbol is delicately placed in order to make sense to any viewers that can pick up on them. One symbol is Nick s obsession with his Peace Lily. It represents his obsession with the job. It is the only other thing he cares for because its needs are simple and by the books. Mercantilism Advantages Mercantilism is often seen beneficial to Great Britain because it ensured products went directly to the mother country allowing them to increase power and limit freedom over the colonies. Although Mercantilism benefitted both the colonies and Great Britain in many different ways, it can be seen favorable to Great Britain because mercantilism justified their control over the colonies and enabled them to believe that wealth is equivalent to power, and that their economic, military, and political power could be measured by amount of gold or silver obtain. The British government looked at the colonies as tenants who were expected to equip products that were necessary in the mother country, including tobacco, sugar, and ship mast s.
