Persuasive Speech On Freedom Of Speech
Recently I was reflecting on what our country has come to. Professional athletes kneeling and
disrespecting our flag, in an alleged effort to protest their beliefs, but are protected by their freedom of
speech. Our country split apart by our most recent presidential election, by the verbal hate people
spoke or continue to speak or post on social media, however, are protected by their freedom of speech.
All of the sudden a bigger reality hit home, and restored my faith in America and humanity. You see
on Friday, August 25, 2017, the 2nd Friday after school started, hurricane Harvey hit my small town of
Katy, Texas. My mom, dad, sister, uncle, and myself stayed in our house during the storm. We lost
power in our house for three days. We were the first street to flood in our subdivision, leaving us
trapped and unable to go anywhere, and the last street to drain, leaving us the last street to get out once
the water receded. On the second and third day we could hear airboat rescues in the front of our
neighborhood, as they were literally in our back yard. When we were finally able to get out of the
house and drive to the store for more gas we passed dozens of houses that had been flooded with 18
inches to 4 feet of water. It was heart wrenching and devastating. The mountains of sheetrock,
cabinets, personal belongings on the side of the rode on almost every house in our neighborhood was
sitting at the curb in total despair. Once we were able to get out of our neighborhood

The First Meditation By Rene Descartes
Topic: How does Descartes argue that mind and body are distinct? Is he right? Am I real, or
imaginary? In the First Meditation, Rene Descartes presents the main falsehoods in which he believed
during his life, and the subsequent faultiness he experienced concerning the body of knowledge. The
philosopher considers that it is never too late to rethink the knowledge about his personal being from
the very foundations, and builds his thoughts on a certain ground starting from common things. It
would be impossible to doubt each thing separately, so he expresses his doubt to the basic principles
of knowledge he has already gained, since a conclusion would surely be doubted if its premise was
doubted. He starts by doubting basic senses, by comparing feels in reality vs. in dreams. For example,
even if I consciously feel warm when I am walking in the sun, I could not claim that I am hundred
‐
percentage sure I am awake, since I would feel it the same way when I was in dreams. Descartes
presents this idea to show the doubt of reality and its elements. Also, he concludes that the common
things we perceive are fashioned, and knowledge based on that can be doubted, such as physics and
astronomy. This category of knowledge are different from geometry and arithmetic, which contain
certain and definiteness in the simplest thing. By doubting the sense and knowledge based on it,
Descartes argued his approach that the body and mind are two absolutely distinctive things. Descartes
mentions God

The Slaughter of Horses
Slaughtering horses for human consumption in the United States started in the early 1970 s.
Americans do not eat horsemeat; we consider horses to be favored animals, just like dogs and cats.
The idea of eating a horse, a cat, or a dog just goes against our very culture. It was foreign interests
that brought the horse slaughter industry to the United States and built equine slaughterhouses here.
By the 1990 s, there were at least sixteen equine slaughterhouses operating all across the United
States. At that time, most Americans did not even realize that such an industry even existed in their
country. Over the years, the industry grew larger and people began to use slaughter as an opportune
way to get rid of their undesired horses. Rather than take responsibility for their horses by either
taking the time to place them in a horse sanctuary or by paying a licensed veterinarian put them down
humanely, owners would ship them to a slaughter house and get paid for doing so. In today s United
States there is a debate ensuing on whether to lift the ban on equine slaughter which was enacted in
2007. There are practical as well as commercial arguments that can be made in favor of horse
slaughter, and there are ethical and environmental reasons to oppose it. In this paper I plan on
addressing both sides of the debate as well as explaining each sides main points. In 2007, the last
United States plant capable of equine slaughter was closed due to a district court ruling making it

Separation Of Public Spaces In To Kill A Mockingbird By...
The South was a volatile place when concerning the separation of the white and black communities.
Laws were put into place to solidify the separation of the races while providing equal opportunity to
all. However, these laws, known as the Jim Crow laws, were ratified to give the illusion of equality
while allowing for separation to continue. Though the image these laws held gave the impression of
equality, while the people did not hold equal status. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee explores the
racial tensions of separate but equal throughout the novel and how these ideas affected the daily lives
of those who lived during this time. Separation of public spaces and the relationships between the
people themselves are small examples of the realities of the laws effects on real people in the South.
The Jim Crow laws perpetuated the racial tension of the South rather than alleviating the problems by
sacrificing equality for the social norm of separation.
The physical separation of the white and black races was of great concern in the South and how each
of the races would interact with one another. This separation included preferential treatment of white
individuals over their black counterparts. While the people filed into the courthouse waiting for the
trial in To Kill a Mockingbird, the Negros, having waited for the white people to go upstairs, began to
come in (Lee 186). The physical separation continued as the Colored balcony ran along three walls of
the courtroom

Terrorists Are Ordinary People
One of the significant learning points from the course material can be found in Section II, Brief 12
Think Like a Terrorist which points out Terrorists are ordinary people. The first step in understanding
the mind of the terrorist is to understand that terrorists are ordinary people with ordinary needs and
ordinary limitations. They make decisions about their missions just as we make decisions about the
tasks we carry out each day in our work and home environments (p.40). The average person might
think of a terrorist as an insane monster who has no morals or the ability to feel. This concept is
farthest from the truth, terrorists just feel strongly about their cause and in many cases are willing to
die for a chance to further that cause. With religious terrorists they sacrifice themselves in the hope of
being transported to a special heaven reserved for those who die for the ... Show more content on

years from one of the worst wines to competing with the highest wines. Although, Malbec as a wine

mainly in Argentina. Looking at the history, process of making Malbec, and then to pairing and uses in
the culinary world that brought its popularity. Will show how Mable became so popular in South
America and become a staple where it now competes with the major reds like Cabernet, Pinot noir,

Early Doctors, Surgeons, and Apothecaries Essay
In the 18th century, the medical field was made up of mostly men. There were three jobs in this field:
Physicians, Surgeons, and Apothecaries. Physicians were the most elite of the three. Physicians in the
18th century had no knowledge of anything. Nobody knew that disease was spread by bacteria, germs,
and viruses. Because they didn t know this, nobody practiced sterilization or hygiene, hospital and
personal.
In the 18th century, scientists were strongly influenced by theories. In 350 B.C., Aristotle believed that
everything was made from fire, earth, air and water. There later was a Greek physician named Galen.
He practiced about 500 years after Aristotle. Galen believed that the body had four elements which he
called humors. The four ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The training of each person varied. All of the injured and sick were sent to one place. It was usually
very dirty and unsanitary. In these places there was a camp surgeon. He cared for the camp s diseased
soldiers and tried to watch for unsanitary conditions. It didn t always pay off. The camp surgeon also
tried to balance the four humors. The most common diseases among soldiers were dysentery, fever,
and smallpox. Most of them were caused by unsanitary conditions. Most wounds in the war were
caused by bullets. First the surgeon would try to remove the bullet. If he couldn t, then he would
bandage the wound. If the bone was damaged and a limb couldn t be saved, then the surgeon would
amputate the limb.
The most deadly disease during the 18th century was smallpox. It spread very fast, killing a lot of
people. It started out with flu like symptoms which is a fever, tiredness, back pain, and vomiting.
During this part of smallpox, the person who had it became very contagious. Later, the fever dropped
and a rash formed in the nose and around the mouth. Then the rash turned to bumps that spread to the
rest of the body.
Newspapers became important in the 18th century. Since there were many outbreaks such as
smallpox, yellow fever, and diphtheria, people wanted to know about these diseases. They informed
the people about diseases. They told people how to

Automotive Engineering Personal Statement
Not again Davin! I heard that phrase, from my Dad, so many times when I was a child. When I was
younger I loved taking things apart to see how they worked, I loved making things with my hands and
exploring every toy I got for my birthday. I would get lego sets for Christmas and be done building
them in half an hour, without the instructions. In middle and elementary school, I would do origami in
class to help me concentrate, and in high school I started taking autos because I love learning hands
on. Taking automotive tech led me to realize my love for cars. I want to do anything with cars, but
after doing a little research I realized just becoming an automotive tech wouldn t be the best career
path. I learned about University of Illinois world renowned engineering programs and realized if I got

Abstract Human population over the past decades, have doubled, tripled and grown rapidly, thereby

The theory has explained human population evolution relatively well in Europe and other highly
developed countries. Many developing countries have moved into stage 3. The major exceptions are
poor countries, mainly in sub Saharan Africa (Nigeria, Benin, Mali, Niger amongst others) and some
Middle Eastern[ 9] countries, which are poor or affected by government policy or civil strife, notably
Pakistan[ 10], Palestinian Territories[ 11], Yemen[ 12] and Afghanistan[ 13].

Origins of Demographic Transition Theory
The idea of DTT was first advanced by Warren Thompson[ 15] in 1929. He divided the world into
three major groups:
· Countries with rapidly declining birth and death rates, with fertility declining more rapidly than
mortality, resulting in a declining growth rate (Northern[ 16] and Western Europe[ 17], North
America[ 18] and Australasia[ 19])
· Countries with declining birth and death rates in certain socio economic strata, with the rate of
decline of the death rate higher than the decline in the birth rate (Central and Southern Europe)
· Countries with high birth rates but declining death rates (rest of the world)
Frank W. Notestein[ 20] developed this theory in 1945 and suggested that there was a relationship
between population change and industrial development. He suggested that with time, countries go
through a linear evolution from traditional,

Research Paper On Facebook Friends List
On my facebook friends list, I have realized that I am allowing people to see my personal life although
I might not know them. When I saw this at first I asked myself why I had allowed my page to look
like it did and not care about who I was allowing to be placed onto it. As I went through my friends
list I began to realize that some of the people I dont even know and thats a scary thing when you think
about the fact that you are putting pictures on there of you and your friends and tagging the location.
So I then challenged myself to go through my list and clean it out and ill be the first to say that this
was a long list and that I didnt know a lot of the people. Although I have all allowed them on there
some of them are only people that I recognize, some I know from a place I met them, and some I
wonder why I allowed them on there with the things they say online. Some people that I add on
facebook are people that I recognize but dont know who they are face to face. Even though I am the
one to accept everyone on to my facebook, they arent always who shoulf be on there. After going back
and looking at my list I came to the conclusion that some people should be deleted because of the
sheer fact that I didnt even know who they were and didnt even know where I had heard there name
before or if I had ever heard it before. But even after looking at it that one time I didnt quiet catch
them all. With facebook being such a big site there are people from all over the world that I

Comparing Tennessee William’s Life and Streetcar Named...
Parallels in William s Life and A Streetcar Named Desire and Glass Menagerie
Tennessee Williams is one of the greatest American playwrights. He was constantly shocking
audiences with themes such as homosexuality, drug addictions, and rape. He broke free from taboos
on such subjects, paving the way for future playwrights. He also was a very good writer. One of the
things he is famous for is his dialogue, which is very poetic.
Williams wrote about his life. The Glass Menagerie is a very autobiographical play. A Streetcar
Named Desire, although meant to a play that anyone can relate to, also contained characters and
situations from his life. In both plays, the characters are drawn from his life. The other relationship ...

During the depression, he worked for his father s shoe factory. It was a horrible time for Tom. He
hated working there and felt that those three years were wasted time (Roudane).
At the age of 16, Tom published a story for the first time. It was in response to the question, Can a
Good Wife be a Good Sport? He took third place in the contest and won 5 dollars. In 1937, his first
play, Cairo, Shanghai, Bombay, was produced in Memphis. After writing a series of other plays that
weren t so successful, he hit it big with The Glass Menagerie. This play was originally called The
Gentleman Caller , and was turned down as a screenplay. He was 34 when he wrote it. In 1948,
Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire, perhaps his best known play. This play earned him his first
Pulitzer Prize. He earned his second Pulitzer in 1955, with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Cash).
Like his father, Tennessee gambled and drank. He was also a hypochondriac. He struggled with
addictions to prescription drugs and alcoholism. He found love in 1947, with Frank Merlo. Merlo
often provided stability in the playwright s crazy life. Any lasting friendships that the couple had were
many due to Merlo s charm (Sullivan). They stayed together until 1961, when Merlo died of lung
cancer. Williams fell into depression about Merlo s death, and in 1983

The Peripheral Nervous System
The nervous system of the human body can be separated into two parts: the Central Nervous System
(CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The brain and the spinal cord make up the Central
Nervous System, which is the nervous system s processing center. The Peripheral Nervous System
consists of nerves that branch from the Central Nervous System and connect it to other body parts
(Shier, Butler, Lewis 2015). The somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system are the
subdivisions of the Peripheral Nervous System. In this essay, I will distinguish between the Central
Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System. The Central Nervous System serves as the
communication center for the entire nervous system. Therefore, it is the mediator ... Show more

It contains both cranial and spinal nerves which connect the skeletal muscles and skin to the Central
Nervous System. There are twelve pairs of cranial nerves. Olfactory nerves are the first pair of cranial
nerves, and they contain sensory neuron axons. Sense of smell is linked with this pair of nerves. The
second pair of cranial nerves is the optic nerves, which are responsible for vision. Oculomotor nerves
are the third pair of cranial nerves, and they consist of both voluntary and involuntary muscles. The
voluntary muscles function to move the eye and raise the eyelid. The involuntary muscles focus the
lenses of the eye and regulate how much light enters the eye. The fourth pair of cranial nerves is the
trochlear nerves, which carry out motor impulses that move the eye independently from the
oculomotor nerves. Trigeminal nerves are the fifth pair of cranial nerves, and they can be divided into
three separate parts. The maxillary division manages sensory impulses of the skin of the face, upper
teeth, and upper lip. The mandibular division oversees sensory impulses of the lower lip, lower teeth,
and skin of the jaw, as well as motor impulses that control chewing. The ophthalmic division is in
charge of sensory impulses from tear glands, the forehead, etc. to the brain. The abducens nerves are
the sixth pair of cranial nerves, and they stimulate motor impulses that move

In Praise of Folly
In Praise of Folly Erasmus Dichotomy
The Silenus box is a case carved like an ugly Silenus that can be opened to reveal beautiful, precious
objects (Erasmus 43, footnote). This box appears in Erasmus Praise of Folly as a metaphor for the
central claim in the novel, which is that that which appears to be Folly (ugly) externally, is wise
(precious) within. Erasmus reveals this dichotomy on three levels: in the image of the box itself, in his
genuine praise of Folly, and in the structure of the novel as a whole.
Erasmus, using the female voice of Folly, introduces his reader to the image of the Silenus box early
in the text, thereby allowing his reader to carry the image with her for the rest of her time reading (and

Folly, being folly, goes on from her initial description of the box to give the majority of her list
backwards (although she begins correctly), claiming that if the list goes in one direction, it must, of
course, go in the opposite direction as well (she s a woman you can t expect her to be reasonable (28)).
To do this, she abruptly inserts the word conversely (43), and continues with a long backward list. Life
will turn out to be death; beauty will become ugliness, and so on, she says (43). In this backwards list,
good outsides cloak bad insides. She then uses this inverted list as a springboard to celebrate wise
appearances (although this is the exact opposite of the central message of the book, which is the
celebration of foolish appearances).
She declares that esteemed members of the community are truly members of her (Folly s) clan, and
that all they have of wisdom is its appearance. Kings and great courtiers... find suitable pretexts within
which they can steal from their citizens and live in luxury so that downright injustice at least has some
appearance of justice (107 8). Popes, cardinals and bishops also behave artificially. They play their
roles with theatrical pomp and ceremonies, but as much as they abide by the superficial demands of
their positions,

Mechanical Solidarity And Social Solidarity
The functionalist perspective represents a society in which everything is in a state of balance and
different systems work together to maintain social solidarity. There are two forms of social solidarity
pertaining to the functionalist perspective; mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. Mechanical
solidarity describes a society with no group hierarchy or role differentiation (PP). This means people
connect through similar lifestyles relating to work, education, and religion. Organic solidarity
describes a society where groups differentiate by nature of activity or occupation . (PP). Each
individual performs a different job within the society and everyone relies on each person to perform
this duty. In Grahams article, he attends ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the entirety of Grahams entry there is conflict between races. Larry is caught between
trying to fit in with the white community and being respected by the black community. During a
march, he was a part of Graham states that Oreos wanted nothing to do with black people or the black
causes that affected us, and many of the other blacks wanted nothing to do with whites or with blacks
who talked and socialized with whites (pg215). This shows that the African American community was
competing for power against the whites and wanted to have the same privileges they had. Princeton
did nothing to help maintain stability throughout the campus unlike other Ivy League Universities.
This was because the president of the University believed himself to be entitled and not once visited
any organizations ran by black individuals. In other Universities such as Michigan State or Rider
College fraternities would host events demoralizing black people such as Dress like a Nigger Night
(pg212). This just showed how whites believed to have superiority and supremacy over other races
which produced conflict.
The cultural perspective refers to how individuals are molded by the environment they live in and
social factors they experience. There are two different types of cultural representations; material
culture and idea/symbolic culture. Material culture is the actual physical goods

Masculinity In Brokeback Mountain And Blood Meridian
Ang Lee s Brokeback Mountain and Cormac McCarthy s Blood Meridian both challenge the
traditional societal views of masculinity in the Western genre. Brokeback Mountain depicts two
cowboys involved in a homosexual relationship, focusing on coupling the opposing themes of
homosexuality and masculinity. On the other hand, Blood Meridian introduces the reader to the Kid,
who courageously establishes his own masculinity outside of the Judge s hypermasculine and
traditional Western philosophy.

The constant struggle between the two characters to be together is heartbreaking and Jack s death is
purposely shown as a murder in order to create an emotional response from the audience. Roughton
(2014, p. 89) highlights that Jack s death being foreshadowed by Ennis witnessing the result of a
bashing of a gay man as a child, links violence and punishment to homosexuality and sinning.
Arguably, the biggest contester to homosexuality is the potential for sin. However, by introducing the
audience to two characters whom they grow attached to and want to see happy, then demonstrating the
consequences of their love in our current society, sparks a reaction from the audience that causes them
to question why these traditional masculine values exist in our society. Hence, although Brokeback
Mountain combines masculine icons with homosexuality to question traditional masculinity associated
with the Western, it also demonstrates the consequences of challenging such values in our current
society in order to highlight to the audience how devastating masculinity and its expectations can

Arguments Against Internet Censorship
The internet is the most important platform for ideas and thoughts to grow and spread, making it
substantial. It’s important to keep it free and open for anyone without having to worry about being
prioritized or shut out completely. The FCC has overstepped and has made it seem like safety is their
main objective with the new ruling, but in reality its for control and sides with big businesses over the
rest of society. The government should not interfere with the internet anymore then they are now,

Summary Of The Allegory In Aesop s Three Fables
After reading all the fables in Aesop s Fables, There are three fables impresses me most. The first one
is The Mountain in Labor. Nevertheless, my opinion is different from that of the allegory. As far as I m
concerned, preparing well before a coming calamity is better than doing nothing and just waiting.
Taking the agitated mountain for example, loud groans and noises were heard from the mountain in
labor and crowds of people came from all parts to see what the matter was. The mouse coming out of
the mountain is the cause. Nevertheless, I think the people s behavior is right and reasonable. What if
they all had paid no attention to the strange mountain in labor? Indeed, there is no calamity but just a
mouse. However, what if there had been a disaster such as earthquake? We cannot predict what will
happen the next moment and we are not always lucky. What we should do is to prepare well and act
when there is an omen, but not just think that do not make much ado about nothing. It is not a waste of
time but protection for people against being ruined. The fable reminds me of the earthquake which
happened in Tangshan, Hebei about forty years ago. Unlike the people living around the agitated
mountain in the fable, people in Tangshan paid no attention to the strange things such as the agitated
livestock and the well appearing cracks which were omens of the disaster in which a lot of people died
in sleep. As far as I am concerned, the people could have protected themselves from the earthquake if
they had paid attention to the obvious omens of the disaster. However, it is because they thought it did
not matter that the earthquake caused the death of so many people. There is no doubt that the death toll
would have been decreased if more people had attached importance to those obvious omens. That is to
say, we should learn that preparing and acting when an omen appears is better than doing nothing but
just waiting. The truth can also apply to our daily life. What will you do when you are faced with
some abnormal things in your life? Will you pay attention to them or do just like the word Don t make
much ado about nothing ? In my opinion, we should prepare regardless of the things indicating what is
likely to happen

Pros And Cons Of Recidivism Rates
As of the end of 2015, there were 1,526,800 prisoners in the United States being held in state or
federal correctional facilities. Every year, thousands of people are released from jail or prison. Most
people who are incarcerated today will eventually be released. Most of these individuals return to a
life of freedom without the skills they need to survive. Recidivism rates suggest that many of these
individuals will re offend within six months of release, and most will reoffend within three years. This
is not because they re bad people; it s because they are trying to thrive in a system that sets them up to
fail.
Given grim post release arrest rates, it s hard to understand why our government is not doing more to
help those transitioning from incarceration to life on the outside. It doesn t make sense for taxpayer
dollars to go towards incarcerating people over and over it seems that the money could be better spent
improving rehabilitation programs for inmates. Increased funding for programs aimed at helping
former inmates transition to life on the outside would likely lead to better outcomes for those
individuals, fewer crimes being committed, and lower recidivism rates. One would hope that our
society would want to see people who are incarcerated serve their time, get rehabilitated, get released,
and become productive members of their communities.
It is well known that former inmates face significant challenges upon being released. Some of these
challenges include

The short story, Greedy Choke Puppy by Nalo Hopkinson, is about the story of Grandmother and her

is night witch and blood sucker. In the Greedy Choke Puppy , author uses the literary elements of

Uses Of Personification In The Visionary, By Emily Bronte
Throughout the history of the world, there have been countless heroes; perhaps, the least

World Revolution Vs. Soviet Policy
Initially the need for a world revolution dominated Bolshevik ideals to such an extent that foreign
policy in the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was regarded as unnecessary. Soviet Policy
was dominated by conflicting ideologies; the Marxist ideological view, and the Commissariat s
traditional policy theory. By co operating with both mindsets, the Communist International, or
Comintern, was created in order to work towards global revolution. In 1922, under the control of
Vladimir Lenin, the Treaty of Rapallo was signed. This enabled both Germany and Russia to unite and
benefit from one another s trade and security, as well as providing each other with training aid and
weapon testing grounds. In 1926, the USSR signed another treaty with Germany, the Treaty of Berlin,
which promised that if either nation was at war with a third power, the other would remain neutral.
However, whilst ties between Germany and the USSR were being created Britain posed as an
unwanted burden to the Soviets as it renounced trade ties and diplomatic recognition of the communist
regime. During this, on Russia s Eastern border both China and Japan fought back against their Soviet
counterparts. By 1934, the Soviet Union had joined the League of Nations, a League put in place to
attempt to keep peace and relinquish violence within Europe. With the further rise of Germany s Adolf
Hitler, came the Nazi Soviet Non Aggression Pact, however the treaty did not last long.

Dulce Et Decorum Est And Jessie Pope s
The poems Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen and Who s for the Game? by Jessie Pope are
direct antitheses of each other, such that their views about war, the chosen literary schemes, and the
effects on the readers are exact opposites in each view. Who s for the Game? is a strong pro war poem
with a simplistic rhyme scheme, basic meaning, shallow imagery, and is intended to provoke and
challenge young men into joining the war. Conversely, Dulce et Decorum Est is an anti war poem with
a relatively more complicated rhyme scheme, complex meaning, deep imagery, and is intended to
discourage those who write such propaganda as Who s for the Game? . The authors of these poems
have polar opposite views on the topic of war, and of fighting for one s country. Jessie Pope is pro
war, and her poem can be reduced down to provoking propaganda with the intent of encouraging
young men into joining the war. Wilfred Owen, a soldier, is anti war, and his poem is a direct message
that Fighting and dying for one s country is not sweet or right, it s an ancient lie. Although both of

Tardigrade Research Paper
Although animals have adapted to many different environments, there is one that trumps them all: the
tardigrade. Commonly called water bears and sometimes moss piglets, tardigrades are able to endure
many environmental stresses, such as dehydration and extreme temperature changes (Herkewitz).
They can even survive in space (Herkewitz)! This essay will prove that the tardigrade is the most
resilient animal on earth and give a glimpse into the everyday life of a tardigrade.
Tardigrades have been known to survive in environments that would kill nearly any other organism.
One such environment is outer space. Space combines many elements that would individually

When a tardigrade becomes a tun, it loses 97 99% of its body s water, and its metabolism slows to
0.01% of its ordinary speed (Herkewitz). Some of its cell contents are replaced with trehalose
molecules, a type of sugar (Herkewitz). They also coat themselves with large amounts of glassy
molecules produced by proteins unique to tardigrades (Crew). An abnormal amount of antioxidants
are produced to defend against reactive oxygen species, dangerous molecules that irradiate particles
containing oxygen (Herkewitz). There are four key types of cryptobiosis that tardigrades undergo:
anoxybiosis, cryobiosis, anhydrobiosis, and osmobiosis ( Tardigrades! ). The most common form is
anhydrobiosis, the type of cryptobiosis tardigrades go through when their body does not have enough
water to function as it usually does ( Tardigrades! ). This allows tardigrades to survive long droughts.
Of course, droughts are not the only problem water bears face. Tardigrades have been subjected to
many tests by scientists, and they took different forms depending on the test. Tardigrades will enter a
stage called cryobiosis that lets them survive extreme temperatures ( Tardigrades! ). When there is a
lack of oxygen that threatens a tardigrade, it will go into anoxybiosis ( Tardigrades! ). Thanks to this,
tardigrades do not need oxygen to survive in outer space. The final cryptobiotic form tardigrades can
enter is called osmobiosis ( Tardigrades! ). Osmobiosis is the least studied of all cryptobiotic forms
and occurs when there is an increase in the concentration of a solute in the water a tardigrade lives in (
Tardigrades! ). One example of osmobiosis would be if salt was poured into the water in which a
tardigrade was

Representation Of Characterism In Picnic At Hanging Rock...
Joan Lindsay, the renowned author of the distinguished Australian novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, has
foreground the representation of Victorian society as repressed and constrained through the
characterisation of various figures throughout the novel. The riveting tale follows the mysterious
disappearance of three girls and a teacher, with only one girl to ever be seen again, during the
Appleyard College s trip to the mystic Hanging Rock on Valentine s Day in 1900. One of the main
focuses in the book is the depiction of the Victorian Society as uptight and controlled, which has been
developed by various characters, including Miss McCraw, Mrs Appleyard and Mademoiselle. Miss
McCraw, the peculiar mathematics teacher, is one of the least likely to go missing. However this is
exactly what occurs and through this uncharacteristic disappearance a notion is presented that
excessive repression results in extreme methods of release. The characterisation of Mrs Appleyard,
combined with that of Miss McCraw, also develops the readers understanding of Victorian society and
how rigid social constraints will eventually breakdown. In contrast, Mademoiselle, the passionate arts
teacher, juxtaposes the previously mentioned characters by being kind and affectionate towards the
girls. The characterisation of these individuals throughout Picnic at Hanging Rock contributes to the
overall portrayal of Victorian society as uptight and suppressed and progresses the reader s
understanding of this

could define it in my own words, I would say that discipline is something you need to learn or be

If there was no discipline, people would do whatever they wanted and make terrible mistakes without
putting the consideration of others first and foremost. Lack of discipline means lack of self restraint
and control. The result of that is not only harmful but catastrophic. It will make it difficult for you to
differentiate right from wrong and see the long term effects of your actions. If you put your mind to it,
you can learn to develop discipline and prevent these harmful thing from happening. Now what does
the religion Islam say about discipline? Well, according to Al Islam.com, discipline and control in
Islam is not equal to dictatorship. For example, good parents take into consideration the age and
understanding of the child, his or her circumstances, and other relative factors. Rules are then made
accordingly. Important points are also stated such as: when disciplining a child, the parent should
refrain from becoming a dictator. A rule is not to be followed because I say so but because it is the
right thing to do. Also another important point that stood out to me was to be in control of yourself
when you are disciplining or being disciplined and when a mistake has been made, to let the person
make amends. This is a part of Islam. Forgiveness. Islam is not about having anger in our hearts, it is
about peace. If you are practicing the religion Islam, you have to also strive to be a good Muslim. Am

Factors That Influence Rainfall in the United States
Factors that Influence Rainfall in the United States
A type of precipitation is rainfall and it develops when water vapor condenses into droplets in the
atmosphere thus becoming too heavy to stay suspended in the air so gravity causes them to fall. The
pattern or occurrence of rainfall in the United States or basically anywhere in the world depends on
several factors such as ground elevation, wind directions, location within a continental mass, areas of
low pressure, cool fronts, jet streams and even mountain ranges. For instance mountains have an
influence on wind and wind is an important feature in rainfall, The windward sides of mountainous

When the pressure is high it means that the air s pressure is higher than the pressure of the surrounding
air in the area. A low is where it is lower. This means that where the air is slowly descending the
pressure is high and vice versa. So, as air descends, it warms, which inhibits the formation of clouds.
This means that the air that descends in high pressure area has to get to high altitudes in some way
which is why air actually rises in low pressure areas. Winds tend to blow into low pressure areas
because are moves from higher pressure areas into lower pressure areas. When the wind moves into a
low area the air moves up and eventually cools and rainfall comes about. Also the low pressure that
causes the air to rise has to do with the Criolis Effect, which is the force caused by the Earth s spin
that redirects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern
Hemisphere. According to meteorologist Tony Pann, who works with Coriolis Effect stated, With the
Coriolis effect, air circulates in patterns that depend on latitude. At the mid latitudes of the USA, most
weather systems move from west to east. However, systems tend to move from east to west near the
poles and in the tropic (Pann). The upslope flow is also related low pressure areas which is basically
the result of air rising and cooling while being forced to ascend to higher terrain.

Tree Ecology In Battle Park

Tree ecology on two slopes in Battle Park
Introduction
Forest communities like Battle Park have different environmental factors within their area. On
different slopes, depending on the direction it is facing, the soil and area could be wetter or drier. This
study is looking to see if the north facing and south facing sites have differences in basal area, density,
species richness, and diversity. Also, there may be some similarities in the area since both are from the
same park.
Much of the forest in Battle Park predates European settlement that occurred in the area around 1740
(North Carolina Botanical Garden 2014). Battle Park is a forest of continuity which means that it is a
good representation of an old growth forest (Vandermast, personal communication). It has some
invasive species, but many of the large trees growing there have remained untouched. The area was
never cut down for human use, but some of the fallen logs were used for firewood (Vandermast,
personal communication). Much of the other areas in the piedmont have had significant changes in the
forest cover, changes in species, and mortality. The forest cover is steadily decreasing at a 7% rate
while the mortality of trees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

William Edward Burghardt Du Bose
In this paper I will discuss William Edward Burghardt Du Bose, better known as W.E.B. Du Bose
(1868 1963) and his views on America and the color line. He describes the color line as a division of
black society and white society. He also explains the breakdown of inequality of the two different
worlds. In W.E.B Du Bois most famous work, The Soul of Black Folks, states the problem he feels the
20th century has with racism. Du Bois used the basic concept of the color line to build upon when he
created an analysis to identify the racism issues we have in this country. He tries to connect the
problem of race, racial domination, and racial exploitation with the problems of the color line. He
believed it was a 20 century world problem of the color line between an advanced race of white men
and the great majority of undeveloped nations of mankind who happened to be brown or black. Du
Bois addressed the differences of race and how it chiefly shows its differences with skin color and hair
texture. These differences are used to shut out certain races that do not fit the standard mold of
success. Du Bois introduced his concept at a meeting of the American Negro Academy in 1900. He
calls attention to the gross inequities of power, wealth, opportunity and access between whites and the
minority groups of the world. He also addresses the problems that could arise from the oppressed
world if the continuation of oppression continued. He takes on a Karl Marx view of society when

Kurt Vonnegut and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Kurt Vonnegut was an American writer, born in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents, Kurt Vonnegut Sr.
and Edith Vonnegut, both studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He had
two older siblings, Bernard and Alice. He attended Cornell University, along with his siblings. He
enlisted in the army while at Cornell, and from there the army transferred him over to Carnegie
Institute of Technology and then to the University of Tennessee, in which he studied mechanical
engineering. One of his most known works, Slaughterhouse Five , was about a soldier in World War
II, much like himself, and the journey s he goes through after, during, and before the war. Billy
Pilgrim, the main character in the story randomly travels through time, and is abducted by aliens who
see everything in fourth dimension. Billy was an optometrist, who then was drafted into the military.
Billy pilgrim reflects the type of man that Vonnegut is himself. He writes of himself through the
fictional character, Billy. It is clear that they both suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is
a disorder, common in war veterans, that causes anxiety due to a tragic accident or injury that the
person experienced. It causes the person to have horrible flashbacks, or memories of the accident. In
Billy s case, the bombing of Dresden could account for the tragic accident that caused the anxiety.

Using 3d Printing Have Come Into The World Of Technology
Recently there have been various articles on interesting things that have been made through printing.
And in particular, objects created through the use of 3D printing have come into the world of

being printed here are microscopic. When created, these materials would be used to make essential
things like biological tissue. With all the medical issues that impact our world today, any new

The beginning of 3D printing started in the 1980 s by an American inventor named Charles Hull
(Glass Ponsford,2014). What makes this trend new and relevant to past 4 years is the ability to

have come about because this micro technology include heart stents, microneedles for painless shots,
gecko adhesives, parts for microfluidics chips, and scaffolds for growing cells and tissue (Patel, 2013).
These ideas could provide a lot of the medical world in terms of treatment.

2,000 kids is born with genitals that cannot be clearly identified as male or female. These types of
children are called Intersex , and they break the boundary of gender identification. Intersex is a broad
category for many situations where an individual s genital or reproductive anatomy, or chromosomal
pattern, lies between the normal standards of both male and female. The prefix inter stands for
between; therefore, the simple definition of intersex is between the sexes. Intersex conditions usually

Intersex Society of North America s principle is that one s genitals are primarily for one s own use, not
for the comfort of others. therefore, the patient should be allowed to choose for their own body and
not have to stand by their parents preferences. There have been numerous cases, where an infant was
given unnecessary surgery to normalize them to fit society s standards. The family of the children
were told to keep their condition a secret, sometimes even keeping the condition a secret from the
child as well, just like Davis story. Today Intersex adults stand up against the medical treatment they
were given as children to say the treatment they received was harmful, lead to sterility, ongoing pain,
scarring, and incontinence, loss of genital sensation and sexual function, and depression. (The
Interface Project) Through support groups members have discoursed their views and opinion of
surgery performed on infants through their own personal experience advocating that child should be

The Epidemic Of The Measles Epidemic
With the effective work carried out by all agencies involved in the measles epidemic, the outbreak was
declared over on July 2rd 2013 this is thought to have been a short time frame and could of lasted a lot
longer if it wasn t for the commitment and combined efforts provided by all agencies including
primary care, local authorities, health boards and public health wales (BBC, 2013).
Without statutory requirements and an emergency procedure in place this type of virus could have
shaped the outcome of this crisis very differently, luckily there was a high level of service provision
and resources available which included training, staffing numbers. Having the essential resources
enabled close monitoring of reported cases of the measles virus could be carried out by all staff in the
health protection team, central health protection division and the communicable disease surveillance
centre. Monitoring also included a wider surveillance of both notified and confirmed cases, situation
updates were distributed to members of the measles Senior Response Team and headline figures were
also provided to the welsh government.
Figures were issued to the public via a press release twice weekly to ensure the public were aware of
the severity of the outbreak and to show a pro active approach.
Released information of confirmed cases was broken down by age group and area this was to coincide
with the press release each week, and to provide accurate updated information.

Affordable Care Act
The Affordable Care Act The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is considered to be one of the most radical
health care moves in legislation after Medicare. The reason being that it will provide universal health
coverage to everyone regardless of circumstance. An evaluation of ACA s influence on health care
will be evaluated in this paper. The Cost of Health Care As the new healthcare law takes effect
insurance premiums are expected to rise. On average for the last six years insurances premiums have
gone up six percent per year. The average annual cost that employers pay to cover their employees is
around $10,000 for each employee. Usually employees are responsible for 20 percent that total or
$2000. At this time the new law has done ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Effect on Quality According to Chaffee, Mason, and Leavitt (2007) this act provides coverage for
up to 32 million of the 45 million uninsured by 2010. It prevents insurance companies from denying
coverage to those with pre existing conditions and also inhibits these companies from removing
coverage from people who develop serious illness (Open Congress, 2009). Moreover, it blocks
insurance groups from applying annual and lifetime caps on coverage (Chaffee, Mason Leavitt, 2007).
The mission of the ACA is to overhaul the inadequate health care system within the country by
providing affordable and accessible health care to everyone. Compared to other wealthy countries, the
United States ranks last in regard to the five indicators of high performing health systems access,
quality, equity, efficiency, and health status. This act has the ability to markedly improve health care.
Hence, average citizens embrace ACA because it enables them to receive coverage at an affordable
cost. Likewise, many nurses welcome ACA because it ushers in several innovative health care
programs that will enhance nursing practice and work environment (Hertel, 2011). The Affordable
Health Choices Act of 2009 allows nurses to focus on health care services as opposed to having to
battle with insurance companies regarding coverage. It allows more time to be spent in the delivery of
care, rather than focusing on the financial aspect. This bill improves

  • 2. Persuasive Speech On Freedom Of Speech Recently I was reflecting on what our country has come to. Professional athletes kneeling and disrespecting our flag, in an alleged effort to protest their beliefs, but are protected by their freedom of speech. Our country split apart by our most recent presidential election, by the verbal hate people spoke or continue to speak or post on social media, however, are protected by their freedom of speech. All of the sudden a bigger reality hit home, and restored my faith in America and humanity. You see on Friday, August 25, 2017, the 2nd Friday after school started, hurricane Harvey hit my small town of Katy, Texas. My mom, dad, sister, uncle, and myself stayed in our house during the storm. We lost power in our house for three days. We were the first street to flood in our subdivision, leaving us trapped and unable to go anywhere, and the last street to drain, leaving us the last street to get out once the water receded. On the second and third day we could hear airboat rescues in the front of our neighborhood, as they were literally in our back yard. When we were finally able to get out of the house and drive to the store for more gas we passed dozens of houses that had been flooded with 18 inches to 4 feet of water. It was heart wrenching and devastating. The mountains of sheetrock, cabinets, personal belongings on the side of the rode on almost every house in our neighborhood was sitting at the curb in total despair. Once we were able to get out of our neighborhood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The First Meditation By Rene Descartes Topic: How does Descartes argue that mind and body are distinct? Is he right? Am I real, or imaginary? In the First Meditation, Rene Descartes presents the main falsehoods in which he believed during his life, and the subsequent faultiness he experienced concerning the body of knowledge. The philosopher considers that it is never too late to rethink the knowledge about his personal being from the very foundations, and builds his thoughts on a certain ground starting from common things. It would be impossible to doubt each thing separately, so he expresses his doubt to the basic principles of knowledge he has already gained, since a conclusion would surely be doubted if its premise was doubted. He starts by doubting basic senses, by comparing feels in reality vs. in dreams. For example, even if I consciously feel warm when I am walking in the sun, I could not claim that I am hundred ‐ percentage sure I am awake, since I would feel it the same way when I was in dreams. Descartes presents this idea to show the doubt of reality and its elements. Also, he concludes that the common things we perceive are fashioned, and knowledge based on that can be doubted, such as physics and astronomy. This category of knowledge are different from geometry and arithmetic, which contain certain and definiteness in the simplest thing. By doubting the sense and knowledge based on it, Descartes argued his approach that the body and mind are two absolutely distinctive things. Descartes mentions God ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Slaughter of Horses Slaughtering horses for human consumption in the United States started in the early 1970 s. Americans do not eat horsemeat; we consider horses to be favored animals, just like dogs and cats. The idea of eating a horse, a cat, or a dog just goes against our very culture. It was foreign interests that brought the horse slaughter industry to the United States and built equine slaughterhouses here. By the 1990 s, there were at least sixteen equine slaughterhouses operating all across the United States. At that time, most Americans did not even realize that such an industry even existed in their country. Over the years, the industry grew larger and people began to use slaughter as an opportune way to get rid of their undesired horses. Rather than take responsibility for their horses by either taking the time to place them in a horse sanctuary or by paying a licensed veterinarian put them down humanely, owners would ship them to a slaughter house and get paid for doing so. In today s United States there is a debate ensuing on whether to lift the ban on equine slaughter which was enacted in 2007. There are practical as well as commercial arguments that can be made in favor of horse slaughter, and there are ethical and environmental reasons to oppose it. In this paper I plan on addressing both sides of the debate as well as explaining each sides main points. In 2007, the last United States plant capable of equine slaughter was closed due to a district court ruling making it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Separation Of Public Spaces In To Kill A Mockingbird By... The South was a volatile place when concerning the separation of the white and black communities. Laws were put into place to solidify the separation of the races while providing equal opportunity to all. However, these laws, known as the Jim Crow laws, were ratified to give the illusion of equality while allowing for separation to continue. Though the image these laws held gave the impression of equality, while the people did not hold equal status. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee explores the racial tensions of separate but equal throughout the novel and how these ideas affected the daily lives of those who lived during this time. Separation of public spaces and the relationships between the people themselves are small examples of the realities of the laws effects on real people in the South. The Jim Crow laws perpetuated the racial tension of the South rather than alleviating the problems by sacrificing equality for the social norm of separation. The physical separation of the white and black races was of great concern in the South and how each of the races would interact with one another. This separation included preferential treatment of white individuals over their black counterparts. While the people filed into the courthouse waiting for the trial in To Kill a Mockingbird, the Negros, having waited for the white people to go upstairs, began to come in (Lee 186). Erasmus reveals this dichotomy on three levels: in the image of the box itself, in his genuine praise of Folly, and in the structure of the novel as a whole. • 19. Summary Of The Allegory In Aesop s Three Fables After reading all the fables in Aesop s Fables, There are three fables impresses me most. The first one is The Mountain in Labor. Nevertheless, my opinion is different from that of the allegory. As far as I m concerned, preparing well before a coming calamity is better than doing nothing and just waiting. Taking the agitated mountain for example, loud groans and noises were heard from the mountain in labor and crowds of people came from all parts to see what the matter was. The mouse coming out of the mountain is the cause. Nevertheless, I think the people s behavior is right and reasonable. What if they all had paid no attention to the strange mountain in labor? Indeed, there is no calamity but just a mouse. However, what if there had been a disaster such as earthquake? We cannot predict what will happen the next moment and we are not always lucky. What we should do is to prepare well and act when there is an omen, but not just think that do not make much ado about nothing. It is not a waste of time but protection for people against being ruined. The fable reminds me of the earthquake which happened in Tangshan, Hebei about forty years ago. Unlike the people living around the agitated mountain in the fable, people in Tangshan paid no attention to the strange things such as the agitated livestock and the well appearing cracks which were omens of the disaster in which a lot of people died in sleep. As far as I am concerned, the people could have protected themselves from the earthquake if they had paid attention to the obvious omens of the disaster. However, it is because they thought it did not matter that the earthquake caused the death of so many people. There is no doubt that the death toll would have been decreased if more people had attached importance to those obvious omens. That is to say, we should learn that preparing and acting when an omen appears is better than doing nothing but just waiting. The truth can also apply to our daily life. Most of these individuals return to a life of freedom without the skills they need to survive. Recidivism rates suggest that many of these individuals will re offend within six months of release, and most will reoffend within three years. Who s for the Game? is a strong pro war poem with a simplistic rhyme scheme, basic meaning, shallow imagery, and is intended to provoke and challenge young men into joining the war. Conversely, Dulce et Decorum Est is an anti war poem with a relatively more complicated rhyme scheme, complex meaning, deep imagery, and is intended to discourage those who write such propaganda as Who s for the Game? . The authors of these poems have polar opposite views on the topic of war, and of fighting for one s country. Jessie Pope is pro war, and her poem can be reduced down to provoking propaganda with the intent of encouraging young men into joining the war. Wilfred Owen, a soldier, is anti war, and his poem is a direct message that Fighting and dying for one s country is not sweet or right, it s an ancient lie. Although both of them are notable ... Commonly called water bears and sometimes moss piglets, tardigrades are able to endure many environmental stresses, such as dehydration and extreme temperature changes (Herkewitz). They can even survive in space (Herkewitz)! This essay will prove that the tardigrade is the most resilient animal on earth and give a glimpse into the everyday life of a tardigrade. Tardigrades have been known to survive in environments that would kill nearly any other organism. One such environment is outer space. When a tardigrade becomes a tun, it loses 97 99% of its body s water, and its metabolism slows to 0.01% of its ordinary speed (Herkewitz). Some of its cell contents are replaced with trehalose molecules, a type of sugar (Herkewitz). They also coat themselves with large amounts of glassy molecules produced by proteins unique to tardigrades (Crew). An abnormal amount of antioxidants are produced to defend against reactive oxygen species, dangerous molecules that irradiate particles containing oxygen (Herkewitz). There are four key types of cryptobiosis that tardigrades undergo: anoxybiosis, cryobiosis, anhydrobiosis, and osmobiosis ( Tardigrades! ). The most common form is anhydrobiosis, the type of cryptobiosis tardigrades go through when their body does not have enough water to function as it usually does ( Tardigrades! ). This allows tardigrades to survive long droughts. Of course, droughts are not the only problem water bears face. Tardigrades have been subjected to many tests by scientists, and they took different forms depending on the test. Tardigrades will enter a stage called cryobiosis that lets them survive extreme temperatures ( Tardigrades! ). When there is a lack of oxygen that threatens a tardigrade, it will go into anoxybiosis ( Tardigrades! ). Thanks to this, tardigrades do not need oxygen to survive in outer space. The final cryptobiotic form tardigrades can enter is called osmobiosis ( Tardigrades! ). Osmobiosis is the least studied of all cryptobiotic forms and occurs when there is an increase in the concentration of a solute in the water a tardigrade lives in ( Tardigrades! ). • 27. Representation Of Characterism In Picnic At Hanging Rock... Joan Lindsay, the renowned author of the distinguished Australian novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, has foreground the representation of Victorian society as repressed and constrained through the characterisation of various figures throughout the novel. The riveting tale follows the mysterious disappearance of three girls and a teacher, with only one girl to ever be seen again, during the Appleyard College s trip to the mystic Hanging Rock on Valentine s Day in 1900. One of the main focuses in the book is the depiction of the Victorian Society as uptight and controlled, which has been developed by various characters, including Miss McCraw, Mrs Appleyard and Mademoiselle. Miss McCraw, the peculiar mathematics teacher, is one of the least likely to go missing. However this is exactly what occurs and through this uncharacteristic disappearance a notion is presented that excessive repression results in extreme methods of release. The characterisation of Mrs Appleyard, combined with that of Miss McCraw, also develops the readers understanding of Victorian society and how rigid social constraints will eventually breakdown. In contrast, Mademoiselle, the passionate arts teacher, juxtaposes the previously mentioned characters by being kind and affectionate towards the girls. The characterisation of these individuals throughout Picnic at Hanging Rock contributes to the overall portrayal of Victorian society as uptight and suppressed and progresses the reader s understanding of this ... Discipline Research Paper Punishment, training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character and control gained by enforcing obedience or order can all be used to define the word discipline . If I could define it in my own words, I would say that discipline is something you need to learn or be taught when you need to correct disobedience. Perhaps even your own disobedience, which would then change the word to self discipline. Discipline is a concept that is absolutely essential to your character. Lack of discipline means lack of self restraint and control. The result of that is not only harmful but catastrophic. It will make it difficult for you to differentiate right from wrong and see the long term effects of your actions. If you put your mind to it, you can learn to develop discipline and prevent these harmful thing from happening. Now what does the religion Islam say about discipline? Well, according to Al Islam.com, discipline and control in Islam is not equal to dictatorship. For example, good parents take into consideration the age and understanding of the child, his or her circumstances, and other relative factors. Rules are then made accordingly. Important points are also stated such as: when disciplining a child, the parent should refrain from becoming a dictator. A rule is not to be followed because I say so but because it is the right thing to do. Also another important point that stood out to me was to be in control of yourself when you are disciplining or being disciplined and when a mistake has been made, to let the person make amends. Factors That Influence Rainfall in the United States Factors that Influence Rainfall in the United States A type of precipitation is rainfall and it develops when water vapor condenses into droplets in the atmosphere thus becoming too heavy to stay suspended in the air so gravity causes them to fall. The pattern or occurrence of rainfall in the United States or basically anywhere in the world depends on several factors such as ground elevation, wind directions, location within a continental mass, areas of low pressure, cool fronts, jet streams and even mountain ranges. For instance mountains have an influence on wind and wind is an important feature in rainfall, The windward sides of mountainous islands in the trade wind regime are among the rainiest places on earth, where rains exceed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the pressure is high it means that the air s pressure is higher than the pressure of the surrounding air in the area. A low is where it is lower. This means that where the air is slowly descending the pressure is high and vice versa. So, as air descends, it warms, which inhibits the formation of clouds. This means that the air that descends in high pressure area has to get to high altitudes in some way which is why air actually rises in low pressure areas. Winds tend to blow into low pressure areas because are moves from higher pressure areas into lower pressure areas. When the wind moves into a low area the air moves up and eventually cools and rainfall comes about. Also the low pressure that causes the air to rise has to do with the Criolis Effect, which is the force caused by the Earth s spin that redirects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. According to meteorologist Tony Pann, who works with Coriolis Effect stated, With the Coriolis effect, air circulates in patterns that depend on latitude. At the mid latitudes of the USA, most weather systems move from west to east. However, systems tend to move from east to west near the poles and in the tropic (Pann). On different slopes, depending on the direction it is facing, the soil and area could be wetter or drier. This study is looking to see if the north facing and south facing sites have differences in basal area, density, species richness, and diversity. Also, there may be some similarities in the area since both are from the same park. Much of the forest in Battle Park predates European settlement that occurred in the area around 1740 (North Carolina Botanical Garden 2014). Battle Park is a forest of continuity which means that it is a good representation of an old growth forest (Vandermast, personal communication). It has some invasive species, but many of the large trees growing there have remained untouched. In W.E.B Du Bois most famous work, The Soul of Black Folks, states the problem he feels the 20th century has with racism. Du Bois used the basic concept of the color line to build upon when he created an analysis to identify the racism issues we have in this country. He believed it was a 20 century world problem of the color line between an advanced race of white men and the great majority of undeveloped nations of mankind who happened to be brown or black. Du Bois addressed the differences of race and how it chiefly shows its differences with skin color and hair texture. These differences are used to shut out certain races that do not fit the standard mold of success. Du Bois introduced his concept at a meeting of the American Negro Academy in 1900.
