On December 7, 1941, early in the morning Japan attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor.
Nobody expected this. Japanese planes destroyed approximately 20 American naval vessels, and
nearly 300 airplanes. 2000 American people were killed, and more than 100 injured.
The day after bombing, Congress approved Roosevelt s declaration to start the war with Japan. After
that Italy and Germany declared war on the United States. Couple months after the tragical event at
Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order for all Japanese Americans to evacuate
West Coast in order to provide national security . It cause relocation of nearly 120,000 people, more

Comparing The Great Flood And The Epic Of Gilgamesh
Introduction:
Global accounts of the Great Deluge are documented as history or legend by cultures in nearly all
regions on earth. Flood myths are found not only in the current religious doctrines of near eastern
societies, but also in those of the ancient civilizations of the world, ranging from the remnants of
Ancient Greek and Mesopotamian tablets to the oral traditions of the Maya and Chinese. Of over 500
flood legends from a multitude of different cultures, it seems the most ancient accounts of the Great
Deluge date back to the Epic of Gilgamesh from the Ancient Sumerian Civilization. Two of the most
popular religions, Christianity and Hinduism, also have accounts of such a devastating flood in their
religious scriptures. Although their stories of the Great flood are incredibly similar, they both have
differences that reflect the beliefs of their respective cultures, which are in turn reflected in their
societies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The similarities, for example, can be explained with the proposition that the Great Deluge was a
historic event or with the theory that the flood myths are variations of an original account, which
would most likely be the Epic of Gilgamesh. In contrast, the discrepancies between the Hindu and
Christian versions of the myths can be explained as varying due to the different beliefs central to their
respective religions. Thus, the topic to be explored henceforth is the impact that the differences in the
Hindu and Christian cultures had on their retellings of the Great Flood. By completing a thorough
analysis of the Great Flood myth, one can gain a better understanding of the beliefs of each culture
and how they manifest in their religious manuscripts and affect their societies as a

Examples Of Allegory In Dantes Inferno
Inferno, written by Dante Alighieri in the early 1300s, discusses Dante s journey through Hell. Dante
is the protagonist in this comedy. While its genre is comedy, comedy during the middle ages was
known to have a happy ending, Inferno has also been referenced to as an epic poem or a long
narrative. The happy ending in Inferno or Dante s other works in conjunction with Inferno would be
Paradise or Heaven. Dante goes through his journey in hell with Virgil. Virgil is in Hell because he
lived in a time before Christ appeared on Earth, but has gotten orders to guide Dante through Hell.
The journey is in the best interest of Dante possibly for sins he may have done. One major theme of
Inferno is actions and how it affects a certain person s reputation. Dante discusses the levels of Hell
and how one person sinned to get to that level. There are 9 levels throughout Hell, starting with Ante
Inferno or the Neutrals and ending with fraudulent which consists of hypocrites and thieves and also
treacherous people. Another theme in Inferno, is sinning. Sinning is what gets an individual in to Hell,
and once they are in Hell regardless of what level, they are stuck. ... Show more content on

Almost all of Inferno is an allegory. Dante s journey through Hell is an allegory for everybody s
thoughts on sins and their repercussions. All of the levels of Hell are an allegory. Gluttons eat too
much, falsifiers make counterfeit money and deceivers are liars. All of these levels of Hell have a
meaning with them. Dante s journey in to the woods at the beginning of the story is also an allegory.
Dante writes Midway along the journey of our life. I woke to find myself in a dark wood, for I had
wandered off from the straight path. (Alighieri 1053) This is an allegory for Dante s life and how
about half way through, he is getting off the straight path of

St. Vincent And The Grenadines Vs Guinea Essay
Case 2 5 St. Vincent and the Grenadines vs Guinea Facts: On November the 13th 1997, a St. Vincent s
and Grenadine agent filed a case against Guinea concerning the release of Marine Vessel Saiga as well
as its crew. The vessel had been taken into custody by the concerned authorities after being suspected
to be used for smuggling purposes. During its seizure, the vessel was in the process of refueling both
fishing vessels as well as normal vessels that were operating off the coast of Guinea. During the time
of its arrest, the vessel was drifting within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Sierra Leone.St. Vincent
and Guinea happen to be state parties of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the sea thus
making the tribunal to have a jurisdiction in this particular case. Procedure: Issues 1. Was the Saiga in
breach of violating customs laws while in the restricted economic zone of Guinea by refueling other
vessels in these waters? 2. Is Guinea in infringement of the UN rule, Article 292 for failing to not be in
line with the timely discharge of the vessel and crew upon getting the agreed bond? Holding: No Rule:
During its seizure by the concerned authorities, the vessel was not in any violation of the existing laws
that could link it to smuggling. The vessel was acting as a fishing fuel under the known facts that it
was only refueling other vessels in the sea area. Concurring opinion The International Tribunal for the
Law of the Sea made a decision in this case that

Comparing Chopin s The Story Of An Hour And The Awakening
Every author has some driving force behind them when they choose to write a story. Among these
motivations, social issues seem to be the most influential of topics. This is reflected throughout the
writings of Kate Chopin, especially in her literary works The Story of an Hour, and The Awakening .
Chopin s use of characterization in this story, as well as her other works, provide themes that further
prove her motivations to revolve around the issues of gender inequality in the times her her writings.
Mrs Mallard is presented as the stereotypical housewife and characterized as such in The Story of an
Hour . Typically, the matron in this time period is portrayed as sensitive and weak, and Chopin at first
makes Mallard seem to fit this stereotype. In the first three paragraphs, Mallard is indirectly made to
seem to be frail in the way she is initially notified of her husband s supposed death. ...In broken
sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. (Chopin), makes the reader believe that
Mallard is unable to comprehend the news as everyone else would be able to. However, the indirect
characterization proves that this is not Chopin s objective for this character. Throughout the short
story, Mallard s actions characterize her indirectly. When she is first informed of her husband s
supposed death, she seems to be distraught ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach
into her soul. (Chopin) is the quote to be examined. The proposed physical exhaustion may be a result
of internal conflict within Mallard s mind. Also, Mallard may be sexually repressed, as were the
majority of women in this time period. Therefore, her reaction to her husband s death may say that she
was not completely satisfied in the relationship. This only provides more reasoning for her reaction to

The Role Of Escapism In The 2000 s
However, these concepts were thought of in the early 90 s, the world has gone under the most
significant change to present day. The last 25 years the world has undergone a transformation similar
to that of the industrial revolution. The internet revolution or the information age has fundamentally
changed the way the world is run in every facet. Every industry has adapted or been revolutionised by
the information age, with media being no exception. As new forms of media emerged, concepts such
as online gaming and online gambling became reality in the 2000 s. A limiting factor in consumerism
being a form of escapism it the monetary component, not everyone has disposable income nor do they
engage with spending their money on frivolous items. However, the internet gave anyone means in
which to consume without the dollar price tag attached. For example, one ... Show more content on

That key factor was that the internet was all artificial stimulus. The internet is artificial stimulus, it is
not real or tangible, one cannot go a physically grab or hold the internet. Therefore, the internet is
itself, a hyperreality. Baudrillard feared the era of hyperreality as the reality principle disappears in
this new paradigm (Baudrillard, 1991, pg 331). According to Baudrillard, in the electronic era, it is the
real that has become our utopia but a utopia that is no longer in the realm of possible that can only be
dreamt of as one would dream of a lost object (Baudrillard, 1991, pg.123). Baudrillard feared what
was the simulation simulacra, the concept of a system in which their aim is maximum operation,
hyperreality total control (Baudrillard, pg, 1991, pg.309). This could be misunderstood as total control
of the world, however it means total control of the individual. Baudrillard feared the fact that the
world would prefer the simulacrum over reality, that simulacrum would become

Red Glass Analysis
Looking Through the Red Glass Throughout Red Glass, by Laura Resau, the characters have to
overcome many changes. One character that changes dramatically is the main character, Sophie. At
the beginning of the novel, Sophie is introduced as a sheltered girl, terrified of the outside world.
Sophie experiences many things that influence her to become a young woman that is willing to
sacrifice her safety for the people she loves. She is influenced mostly by the antagonist, Angel. Angel
supports Sophie in ways that make her want to change herself. Sophie changes positively throughout
the story into a strong, fearless person, and Angel s love for her is what makes her capable of that
change. Sophie introduces herself in the story as a nerdy, outcasted teenage girl, I always thought of
myself as a free floating one celled amoeba, minding my own business. The other kids at school were
all parts of a larger organism. . . Not particularly noticed, definitely not appreciated, just an amoeba
swimming around aimlessly (9). Sophie feels as if she does not belong where she grew up, she has
always felt like she was on the outside. Her father, a drug dealer and felon, left her mother when she
was first born. Because of her extreme self esteem issues, Sophie blames herself for her father leaving.
She recalls what she believes happened when she was born, When Mom was a teenager, I started
making her belly fat. And then my dad left. And then I was born too soon. And he came back to get us.

Medical Use of Psilocybin Essay
During a visit to Mexico, Gordon Wasson, a mycologist, discovered the use of psilocybin mushroom
in spiritual ceremonies by Indian tribes. Upon experiencing the spiritual and hallucinatory effects of
the mushroom, Wasson returned to the area accompanied by an experienced mycologist, Roger Heim,
who managed to cultivate the mushroom once in France and send samples of it to the scientist who
had discovered lysergic acid, Albert Hoffman. From the mushrooms, Hoffman successfully isolated
two compounds which he further named psilocybin and psilocin. Analogs of these compounds were
further synthesized and were employed mainly for psychotherapeutic uses. Many tests on psilocybin

Once in the stomach, due to the highly acidic environment, psilocybin undergoes a removal of its
phosphate group, and is converted into psilocin. This process is called dephosphorylation. Aqueous
solutions of psilocybin are very sensitive to light and rapidly oxidize in its presence. A great variety of
analytical methods can be used for psilocybin identification and evaluation. Amongst them are thin
layer chromatography, gas chromatography used along with mass spectrometry , infrared spectroscopy
and high performance liquid chromatography.
Treatment Although prescribed use of psilocybin is rare nowadays for medicinal purposes; many tests
have been done on its medicinal uses in patients with personality disorders. Some tests have shown a
noticeable reduction in obsessive compulsive disorder as a result of psilocybin use. Psilocybin has also
been tested and is sometimes administered to cancer patients and has been proven to ease mental
stress and the emotional baggage caused by cancer by changing the patient s perspective on his/her
situation and life in general. This compound has also been proven to reduce the pain resulting from
cluster headaches in 85 % of patients tested and distanced the frequency of the attacks in 96% of
patients.
Facts on benefits and risks
According to scientific studies, the risks and benefits associated with psilocybin are rather
psychological and not physical. Test subjects

Sea Urchin (Lytechinus Purpuratus) Fertilization
The Effect of Salinity on Sea Urchin (Lytechinus purpuratus) Fertilization
Nicky Friedman, Lewis Sorokin, Alyssa Raifsnider, Jake Lippi
Franklin and Marshall College, October 4, 2016
Introduction Due to an influx of freshwater from melting polar ice caps, the overall saline
concentration of various saltwater environments has been steadily decreasing for years, thereby
endangering their inhabitants (Lessios, 2008). For these organisms, including Lytechinus purpuratus, a
species of sea urchin, this environmental change has the potential to harm many of their natural
functions. As such, it would be expected that the gametes of this organism would not be able to
properly fertilize when their natural environment is altered. In this experiment, L. purpuratus eggs
were exposed to a natural environmental saline concentration (Cowart et al., 2008), as well as two
environments above and two environments below this natural saline concentration. This was done in
order to test their ability to be fertilized and the rate at which they fertilize under this environmental
stress. It was believed that the conditions below the natural saline environment would have a greater
adverse effect on the fertilization success of the sea urchin eggs than the environments above the
natural saline solution. This was predicted because sea urchins, ... Show more content on

The Film Adaptation Of Richard Matheson s I Am Legend
The film adaptation of Richard Matheson s 1954 novel, I am Legend, was released in December of
2007. Starring Will Smith, and directed by Francis Lawrence, the movie utilizes a viral outbreak,
instead of a bacterium (like the book), to spread the disease (Lawrence). Dr. Alice Krippin genetically
engineers the measles virus to act as an anti cancer treatment. She remarks in an interview that out of
the 10,009 clinical trials, there have been 10,009 confirmed cancer free patients. However, the Krippin
virus mutates within the bodies of the patients and begins destroying what makes them human. KV
becomes transmittable through saliva. New York City is put into a quarantine when the number of
infected become too great, and U.S. Army virologist, Robert Neville, is working to find a solution to
prevent further spread. The virus mutates further and is airborne, leading the president to order the
destruction of the bridges leading off Manhattan and quarantine all the infected on the island.
Revealed through flashbacks, Robert Neville s family dies because of this order. In an attempt to save
his wife and child, he has them evacuated from the Southport dock, but as the helicopter is taking off,
another helicopter collides with theirs, ending in a ball of fire. Three years after the outbreak, Robert
Neville is the sole survivor in New York City, as everyone is either infected or dead. He is

Soda Vs Diet Soda
When I first started high school I joined my school s dance team. I would train vigorously in order to

healthy eating was tough. The one thing I could not give up was diet coke or any diet soda to be exact,

Another assumption is that the artificial sweeteners affect the stomach bacteria differently then
common sugar. A study done by Purdue University researchers, by using rats, showed that diet sodas
and weight gain revolves around the artificial sweeteners (Global Healing Center). For ten days, the
pair fed the first group of rat s sugar sweetened beverages, and the other group of rats sugar sweetened
and artificially sweetened beverages. After ten days, they gave the groups chocolate pudding. The data
revealed that the rats that had been fed both sugar sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages
consumed more calories than the rats that only drank the sugar sweetened beverage (Global Healing
Center). This proved that since artificial sweeteners lack calories while remaining sweet, it interferes
with the brain s ability to register calorie intake. It tricks the brain into thinking its not eating as much
as it is. In reality it does not directly put pounds on the body but can indirectly put pounds on the body

Decision-Making Process Paper
Decision Making Process
People make decisions every day. What clothes to wear? What movie to watch? What to cook for
dinner? Most of us want to think that we are capable of making logical decisions. Goldstein (2011)
suggest deductive and inductive reasoning are part of the decision making process. Deductive
reasoning arrives at a conclusion based on multiple premises that are assumed to be true and inductive
reasoning arrives at a conclusion based on what is probably true about the evidence (Goldstein, 2011).
Consequently, doctors, attorneys, psychologists, and many other professionals are held higher on
accountability for their decision making processes. This essay gives descriptions of how humans make

They are held to higher standards of ethical behavior for their roles and duties, including their decision
making processes (Rogerson, Gottlieb, Handelsman, Knapp, Younggren, 2011). Conversely, when
decisions involve complex circumstances, making ethical decisions can become complicated. Ethical
knowledge does not always generate ethical behavior (Rogerson et al., 2011). Certain circumstances

Rogerson et al., (2011) argues that in the field of psychology, these professionals can improve decision

Conception Of Negative Liberty In Robert Wright s Black Boy
The one conception of liberty that offers the most morally defensible analysis of a person in both of
these circumstances is Negative Liberty, as it removes the restrictions on one s ability to make
something of themselves and survive. The one conception of liberty that offers the least morally
defensible analysis is Positive Liberty, as it above and beyond what is necessary for a person to
survive and thrive. Positive Liberty asks that we provide everything that one needs to thrive, while
Negative Liberty maintains that we remove the restrictions on being able to attain those resources that
are required for Positive Liberty to exist. In Two Conceptions of Liberty, Isaiah Berlin defines

Who Is Lady Macbeth s Letter To Her Father
Dearest Beloved Mother and Father, In the short time of serving our mighty King Macbeth, I cannot
say anything but good things. Our majesty is nothing less than the kind, honorable, and noble man one
would expect him to be. On the contrary, however, there was one particular incident which startled me
greatly, and now I am fearful for my own life as well those in the kingdom.
Ere the day before, King Macbeth hosted the most elegant of all banquets in celebration of his
crowning. All was well; his servants and I tended to the guests with ease. Without any notice, a
mysterious, dark man emerged from the door s shadow and our King shortly excused himself and
proceeded to greet the man, privately. As I neared the end of the table, the two were deep in private

why. Continuing to discuss that His Highness s special quest, Banquo, was unable to attend, chills

solid ice as our Majesty, AGAIN, cursed and pointed at the invisible being in the chair. His words still
ring inside my head, Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves/Shall never tremble: or be alive
again... Now, however, we were all issued away by Lady Macbeth. Leaving their steaming food
abandoned, Lords empty the room instantly, lacking order, and the servants and I aimed toward our
wing.
Is our majesty s sanity being challenged? It is questioned if he will continue his rule. I fear the worst
dear parents. Pray you will care for yourselves as I fear I will be returning home soon.

King Arthur Biography
Arthur was the first born son of King Uther Pendragon and the next heir to the throne. King Uther
died when Arthur was a baby. A magician named Merlin rescued Arthur and took him to a knight
named Sir Ector, who was a friend of the king. There, Sir Ector raised Arthur as a son while raising his
only child, Sir Kay was a knight in training. Nobody, not even Arthur knew he was a prince and the
next king of England.
Without a ruler, the kingdom started to panic and fight over who should be the next king of England.
To settle the argument, Merlin created Excalibur, which was the sword in the stone. Every knight and
noble came from all around and tried to pull the sword out, but all who tried failed. As the years went
by, Arthur grew and one day Merlin introduced himself. During this time Sir Ector taught Arthur how
to be a good squire for his adopted brother, Sir Kay. Arthur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Censorship Essay examples
Censorship
Without the history of Censorship, what type of things would children be watching? Without the
unique methods of Censorship, what kinds of films would be being released into the public?
Throughout this essay I will be explaining the steps taken to achieve the level of Censorship, that we
have now.
In 1900 1950 every movie in the world was rated before being released. The government, of the
country in which the movie was made always did this. In 1956 the rules were changed. Each movie s
script was now required to go before a Film Board, before being produced. If approved the company
was allowed to go on with production. In 1968 the Film Board of the Motion Picture Association of
America adopted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Throughout History Production companies have been influenced by Religious, Ethnic, Racial and
political groups, who have lobbied against content they deem controversial.
In 1953 a producer named Otto Preminger, made a movie called The Moon is Blue . This movie
caused the collapse of the Production Code from previous years. The movie caused such controversy
because of one line in it a professional virgin . Because in 1953 the scripts of movies were read before
they were produced, and the organization CARA was not yet established, Otto Preminger was not

Over time, computers have evolved tremendously due to inventors working with different devices.
Even before history was recoded, people used handheld counting and computing aids. Today, with our
modern technology, people use computers called laptops and even other handheld devices such as
IPads and even a cell phone. Over history, computers have evolved in order to fulfill the needs of
today s society and better serve people. My paper will explore the creation and usage of each device,
beginning with Manual calculators, looking at mechanical calculators, computer prototypes,

Mechanical calculators came on the scene shortly after the slide rule was developed. Instead of
needing the operator to apply algorithms to perform calculations as was the case with manual
calculators, a mechanical calculator implemented algorithms autonomously. The operator entered the
numbers for the calculations and pulled a lever/turned a wheel and the calculation would be carried
out. Mechanical calculators were developed in 1623, one of them was called Shickard s calculator,
which contained a series of interlocking gears. It had ten spokes and each spoke on a gear represented
a digit. Each time that the gear made one complete revolution, it moved on to the next gear which was
one notch to the left in order to carry the one . Moving on to 1642, Blaise Pascal developed what was
known as the pascaline. A pascaline was a mechanical device that was used for both addition and
subtraction as well as division and multiplication. Gottfried Whilhelm von Leibniz created a similar
calculator in 1673. In 1820, however, Thomas de Colmar s Arithmometer was the first mass produced
mechanical calculator. Soon, calculators wouldn t need human power in order to operate. In 1822,
Charles Babbage created plans for a device that would be called the Difference Engine that would run
only on steam power. It was made to rapidly and accurately calculate large tables of numbers that were
used for engineering and astronomical applications. The blueprints for the Difference Engine

How Did American Culture Change Over Time
Over the past several centuries the world has changed in a countless number of ways. From
colonialism to slavery, the industrial revolution to the World Wars, and the modern day technological
boom, America in particular has often been right in the middle of all of the transformations. Amongst
these changes certain movements also began to rise up especially in the arts, sciences, and politics.
One such movement, romanticism, emphasized emotions, abstract thought, and individual self. On the
other hand, an opposite movement known as neoclassicism, or sometimes just classicism, emphasized
a more old school approach to life. For example, things like reason and rationality, etiquette, and
science were mainly focused on. Moving into today modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This includes healthcare, immigration, and basic human rights. After the most recent presidential
election many people that associate themselves with LBGTQ+ in any way have been sought out by
others wishing to cause them harm, or even kill them. Although it has been hundreds of years since
Lafayette s novel the times have unfortunately not changed much. The princess was afraid to come
forward and express her love for the Duke just like people who identify as gay or lesbian, among
many others, are today. In fact sometime after her publication of the Princess of Cleves it was
discovered that Lafayette was most likely writing about the rule under Louis XIV, but she stated
Henry II instead so she would not be caught and possible executed. It is in this way that even though
certain aspects of our society is changing the world today is still very much classicist, and stuck in
their traditional old school ways of life. Another example of this classicist view can be seen in Karl
Marx s writings on communism. Karl Marx if one of the biggest influencers on the modern world. His

Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin with things coming to blow in the Cold War. Before the horrific events

Methodology
Methodology in cross cultural psychology can be divided into two categories: quantitative and
qualitative. Methodology in cross cultural psychological studies are the popular methods used by cross
cultural psychologists and offers critical proposals about the process of gathering facts and
interpreting data in comparative studies(Shiraev amp; Levy, 2010, p.,28). Qualitative research is
carrying out mainly in a natural setting, where the research participants carry out their daily activities
in a non research atmosphere. Qualitative studies are also conducted when there are difficulties in
measuring variables, in situations when the subjects cannot read or use answer scales or when there
are no standardized measurement instruments available. Qualitative research is also useful in
situations in which variables are not completely conceptualized or operationally defined. The
qualitative method can be useful when the experiences and priorities of the research participants
heavily influence the research (Shiraev amp; Levy, 2010, p., 29). Quantitative methodology is a
measure of correlation in research conducted in

Evidence Based Management Process
Planning is the process of setting goals and creating a plan for meeting those goals. The benefits of
planning as seen by the research evidence is firstly, it provides a team with a direction for future
actions. For example, in my team we did not have a direction on how to proceed thorough each stage,
if it was better to move up or down, which made our team members losing interest. Furthermore,
planning helps when there is a problem, because if we had a plan we can proactively address problems
and their impact on the project or goal is reduced. For instance, a problem in our Everest simulation
was when of our team members health was critical or if someone wanted to complete an individual
goal, we spent a lot of time discussing on what to do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my opinion, I will use Evidence based management in my future career, because managers who
practice evidence based management make better management decisions and perform better.
Furthermore, for a evidence based manager, there is always a learning phase, because everyday there
is always new research done to help managers in their decisions making, which makes managers bring
continuance value to an organisation. As, more managers start adopting evidence based management
the gap between manager, scholars and educators become closer, which helps in building a community
for information gathering and sharing. I would use the 6 principles used by Rosseau McCarthy (2007)
as a guideline to manage a modern organisation. Firstly, I would manage an organisation using
principles and theories of behaviour in and out of an organisation that is supported by the best
available research. Secondly, mastering decision awareness which is knowing when an action or non
action is a decision in itself, that if done properly can motivate employees and organisation
performance. Furthermore, as a manager, I would only make decisions when I have the whole picture
of the situation. Moreover, I will manage an organisation by adapting my knowledge and using
effectively in different settings and circumstances. I will also use all important decision support, like
financial performance to help make decision on how the organisation is doing. Finally, an important
part of managing a organisation using evidence based management is to always update my knowledge
in any new developments. Following these principles I will be a better

A Blended Future Of Technology

A Blended Future Technology in education is not a new concept, especially at the college level.
Universities are encouraged to offer online courses, or as freelance journalist Chrissie Long and many
other experts call them, MOOCs (massive online open courses), to reach out to more students and
provide them with a more convenient style of learning (455). While MOOCs certainly have their
strengths, how far should universities go? What is the future of online education? Should colleges of
the future only offer online courses, or should face to face classes still be the primary form of
education? Blended courses, though not without faults of their own, can combine the best elements of

Because the lectures are outside of class, there is more time for discussion and clarification. The
lectures in strictly face to face courses are presented in class, so there is not usually enough time for in
depth discussions. MOOCs are entirely online, so there is no meeting for discussion. Blended courses
do meet and have time for discussions, but there are some drawbacks as well. For example, if a
student has a question that he or she cannot find the answer to, the student will have to wait until the
next in class meeting or email the professor to get the answer. In face to face classes, the student could
ask the professor immediately, but a student in a blended course would still be able to eventually ask
the professor in person, which is an advantage over a MOOC. Even though face to face classes have
more access to professors, and MOOCs do not require the student to come to campus, blended courses
remain beneficial to students because they provide more time for discussions and clarification than
other types of classes. Aside from more in class discussion, blended courses also allow students to set
their own paces. In an article for U.S. News World Report, author Jordan Friedman mentioned a 2011
Kaplan Inc. research review that said blended learning programs can potentially offer more

What are the main differences?
Monopolistic competition differs from perfect competition in the fact that production does not take

Monopolistic competition is a type of competition within an industry where all firms produce similar
substitutable products, all firms are able to enter the industry, all firms are profit maximizers and
finally where all firms have some market power, which means none of them are price takers. Whereas
perfect competition is a market structure where all the firms have to follow those five criteria: sell

The channels are saved in each tab item but these channels are needed in the SamRunJobCtrl . The

Japanese New Wave
The film, Cruel story of youth (1960) by Nagisa Oshima is an example of Japanese new wave cinema

The term New Wave became widely used to describe a group of young French directors new to the

distinctly audible. The pilgrim told Odilo, who was the head of the monks in a town in eastern France,
who appointed the day following (November 2) to be set apart for the benefit of those souls in
purgatory ( ). What has yet to be investigated is what today s symbols of All Soul s Day mean to those
who celebrate it. To accomplish this, I analyze the myths that surrounded All Soul s Day, and I focus
on how the symbols that come out of these myths help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there are some myths that surround death itself. In the Netherlands and in Mexico it is
believed that the souls of the children return to their families on November first, while November
second is set aside for the departed adults. When the souls return, they come to be with their living
relatives. However, they do not come back to scare or haunt people like many people believe
(Quartier, 2010). If we take a look at the myth deeper we realize that it is a deliverance myth, because
the souls are being reunited with their families. In this context if we look at Joseph Campbell s
Functions of Myth we can relate this myth to the function that says it is supposed to evoke in the
individual a sense of being grateful, affirmative awe before the monstrous mystery that is existence ( ).
The sense of being grateful comes from the fact that the families are able to be with their loved ones
again. The second myth about death comes from England, Scotland and Wales. The souls of loved
ones come to search for warmth and affection. The living helped these souls find what they were
looking for, by setting up bonfires to lead the way. Along with the bonfires there were traditions
including decorating graves, special church service, and all night vigils. When the souls returned it
was believed at this time human beings were able to truly see how the world is (Beckman, 2016). This
myth could be seen as deliverance, because it is allowing the souls to come back to their families
along with that the living people are able to see how the world really is. Then if we look at Joseph
Campbell s Functions of Myth we could argue that the third function about sociological order about
what is right and what is wrong relates to this myth, because the ultimate goal of the souls returning is
to allow the people to see what the world is really

Summary Of The Lost Letters Of Pergamum
Longenecker s The Lost Letters of Pergamum encapsulates the socio historical, cultural, and political
atmosphere of the first century setting in which Mark s Gospel would have been experienced.
Understanding Jesus in context of this background alters the way I understand the Gospel of Mark.
Specific passages in Mark can be reflected upon based on the socio historical, cultural, and political
aspects of the setting described in Longenecker s book. In The Lost Letters of Pergamum, readers see
Euphemos and Antipas admonishing Luke against associating himself with Christians for they
worship and follow a different lord than the emperor as well as endorse an empire other than Rome.
In the time following the destruction of the temple, the people attributed their wealth, social status,
and success to having favor with the gods. In fact, Antipas goes as so far as to say the gods made the
Roman empire eternal and sovereign. Antipas attributes his rise in social status to the gods. Jesus, on
the other hand, does not look at riches that way. When a rich man fell at the feet of Jesus asking how
to inherit eternal life, Jesus instructed the man to sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow Him
(Matthew 10:17 31). This goes against the aforementioned social belief throughout the history of
Rome. This means that riches are not in fact a sign of favor from the gods. Additionally, in Mark 13,
Jesus speaks of the destruction of the temple. When Antipas read this section, he realized that

Sophocles Oedipus The King
The renowned Greek philosopher, Aristotle, is widely known for his theories in mathematics, physics,
and politics. However, he is also known for establishing ideas in the field of literature, such as the
concept of tragedy and the theory of the importance of scenes of recognition and reversal. This ancient
concept and theory are still highly discussed and used to analyze numerous pieces of literature to this
day. One piece that could be considered as an ideal tragedy is the play Oedipus the King written by
Sophocles. In this play, Sophocles utilizes the concept of tragedy as well the theory of the importance
of scenes of recognition and reversal to create a setting, tone, and mood throughout the play. Oedipus,
the mythical king of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of the use of fear to bring emotion to the reader in Oedipus the King is when the city of
Thebes is suffering from a plague that destroys fields of crops as well as the fertility of its woman. A
blight is on the fruitful plants of the earth, a blight is on the cattle in the fields, a blight is on our
women that no children are born to them; a God that carries fire, a deadly pestilence, is on our town
(Sophocles 26 30). At the beginning of the play when Oedipus is asking the people of Thebes why
they are sitting in front of his palace, a Priest explains that there is a plague going on in the city and
they want an end to it. It is later known that the plague will never end until the murderer of Laius, the
king of Thebes before Oedipus, is found. Oedipus vows to find the murderer, which eventually leads
to him finding out he was the one who killed his father and married his own mother, thus fulfilling his
fate. This extracts pity from the reader, for all the character tried their hardest to run from the
prophecy but in the end, it still catches them. Lastly, tragedy can be seen throughout the entire play, as
readers see the steady downfall of a hero, who was heavily influenced by his hubris or pride. Aristotle
s ideal tragic hero is one the must exceed the average man intellectually, physically and mentally.
Oedipus not only travels throughout the city defeating numerous foes, but eventually becomes the
king of Thebes. Not only that, according to

The History Of Halloween
It s the night that sends shivers down our spines. The night where ghosts and goblins pass into our
world, stalking us as we in collect treats from house to house. Halloween. Yes, it all seems like simple
fun, as we get to take part in parades, dress as your favourite character, and try to ignore the other
individuals dressed as monsters, attempting to scare us. However, just like the monsters we dress as
yet fear under our beds, the history of Halloween is more frightening than a simple boo from a fellow
trick or treater. Though Halloween has been going on for our entire lives, that doesn t mean it s always
been the way it has. This holiday first began over two thousand years ago in a Celtic festival titled
Samhain , celebrated on the

Impact of Tourism on Hawaii
The Environmental Impact of Tourism on Hawaii and its Natives
By: Rylee Blair
As skiers, hikers, sightseers, beachgoers and travelers pack their bags and head out for their vacations,
they probably never even consider that what they are about to embark upon happens to be the largest
industry in the world. Millions of people travel domestically and internationally each year to
experience places and things that are totally out of their ordinary lifestyle and to get their minds off the
hustle bustle of everyday life. Because of Hawaii s year round tropical climates, cultural experiences
and leisurely atmosphere, it is one of the world s most popular tourist destinations and attracts over 9
million visitors each year. Marine and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This kind of growth doesn t happen without displacing land, people, animals, etc. Land based
resources, people s culture and historical symbols are often the victims of tourism development in
Hawaii. Many of the major resorts have been built on culturally significant sites. Construction of
tourist related businesses have played a huge part in the destruction of ancient Hawaiian burial
grounds, archaeological historic sites and sacred places. In fact, on the island of Kauai, a well known
ancient Hawaiian burial ground was excavated to make room for a huge condominium resort project.
Out of 22 acres of sacred burial grounds, only a one acre parcel was left, and human remains were
displaced and moved to make room for the project. This was devastating to the native Hawaiians who
had loved ones buried there for centuries, but seemed to be insignificant to the tourism industry that
seemed only to be worried about their new project and making money. Hundreds of other cultural and
historic sites have been bulldozed to make way for hotels and golf course developments without
regard for the environmental effects of their actions. In addition to disrupting the environment with
huge new buildings, many other sites such as ancient temples, house sites, fishing shrines, ceremonial
platforms and agricultural have been turned into tourist attractions and have been misused, abused and
disrespected by tourism. This is

The American Indians have adopted the quiet nature from their ancestors and they have been taught to
keep quiet, hear, observe and memorize the important skills that are required by the society. They
mainly focus towards observing the other people and their behaviors and therefore restrict their
opinion of their own selves. On the other hand, the American Indians or Native Americans are mostly
practical minded and perform their activities according to the experience and the lessons that have
been taught by their elders. For the purpose of learning course materials in the educational sector, the
American Indians focus towards examples and day to day activities that may guide them well towards
their daily lives.
The network structure of the American Indian families influences their behavior patterns and therefore
their behaviors are influenced by the community in which they roam around. The American Indians
normally prefer to hang out in their own communities because by doing so they are able to observe
their values and rituals and can therefore practice the teachings of their ancestors in a more accurate
manner. They do not like other people to mingle in their circle or in their community and therefore
they keep themselves restricted to their own community and traditions.
The American Indians prefer the concept of unity in their behaviors and therefore focus towards

Brother Malcolm X s Impact On The Civil Rights Movement
The role of the prophet is what could be and what should be, in which God is working through.
According to this definition, there are many well renowned black prophets, and others remain
nameless. Although the Black prophet for which I am going to speak of in this essay are prominent
throughout the Civil Rights Movement, his teachings not only have a compelling effect on
contemporary s society but have a lingering effect on my heart personally. This Black prophet is
Brother Malcolm. Malcolm X s teachings of urgency for such radical change was one that was not in
favor with many Americans, specifically White Americans. Many have associated Malcolm X s
ideologies with hatred, radicalism with a very negative connotation, and violent. This perception

Benefits Of Secondary School Teacher
Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world, Nelson Mandela. Secondary
school teachers can essentially make or break the next generation of America. What students are
taught in school can heavily affect how their future turns out to be. Secondary school teachers are
some of the people that are heavily credited for many famous celebrities or athletes successes for the
education they gave them. NBC News anchor Brian Williams is an example of someone who has
given his secondary school teachers some form of acknowledgement for his success. Secondary
school teachers are an important part of a person s life in their spiritual, mental, and moral growth in
life, and are some of the people who help shape young mind s to do whatever they put their minds to.
A skilled worker, regardless of the job description, remains a treasure, Madeleine M. Kunin. Over one
million secondary school teachers currently hold jobs in the United States. Secondary school teachers
typically teach students in grades ranging from seventh to high school senior, primarily in English,
arithmetic, and science fields ( Secondary School Teachers 490), and each day they teach three to six
classes of varying sizes. Secondary school teachers have a lot more benefits to their job than what it
appears to be. A good majority of them are spiritual or mental benefits, but some benefits are physical
or monetary. Some secondary school teachers direct extracurricular activities, and

Essay On Radiotherapy And Chemotherapy
Cancer can be defined as an uncontrollable division of cells in the body, and untreated cancer can lead
to serious illness, tumors and death. Cancer related to head and neck is the most difficult to treat
because it has a direct impact on the central nervous system. Radiotherapy is used to treat head and
neck cancer, and the treatment can be combined with chemotherapy. Radiotherapy or radiation therapy
uses radiation while chemotherapy is the treatment that uses chemical agents to destroy the cancer
cells. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy have been associated with effects like seizures, suppression of
cell growth and cognitive impairment (Dietrich et al., 2006). The brain scans of the patients after
receiving a few years of treatment show a decline in white matter in the brain. (Bharatha et al., 2012)

The underlying cause for the associated effects has been poorly understood. Patients must know about
the affects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy on the central nervous system before undergoing the
procedure. The article discusses affects of cancer treatments on the cognitive development through
means of neuropsychologic test performed on different age groups of children. The affects of
chemotherapeutic agents used in chemotherapy will also be discussed. The purpose of the research is
to examine whether radiotherapy and chemotherapy actually lead to its associated effects.
Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are two major procedures used to treat cancer, but the success rates
are as low as 2.1% (Siegel et al., 2015). The low success rate and high potential risk of cancer
therapies are a major failure in the health

  • 4. Comparing The Great Flood And The Epic Of Gilgamesh Introduction: Global accounts of the Great Deluge are documented as history or legend by cultures in nearly all regions on earth. Flood myths are found not only in the current religious doctrines of near eastern societies, but also in those of the ancient civilizations of the world, ranging from the remnants of Ancient Greek and Mesopotamian tablets to the oral traditions of the Maya and Chinese. Of over 500 flood legends from a multitude of different cultures, it seems the most ancient accounts of the Great Deluge date back to the Epic of Gilgamesh from the Ancient Sumerian Civilization. Two of the most popular religions, Christianity and Hinduism, also have accounts of such a devastating flood in their religious scriptures. Although their stories of the Great flood are incredibly similar, they both have differences that reflect the beliefs of their respective cultures, which are in turn reflected in their societies. ... The similarities, for example, can be explained with the proposition that the Great Deluge was a historic event or with the theory that the flood myths are variations of an original account, which would most likely be the Epic of Gilgamesh. In contrast, the discrepancies between the Hindu and Christian versions of the myths can be explained as varying due to the different beliefs central to their respective religions. Thus, the topic to be explored henceforth is the impact that the differences in the Hindu and Christian cultures had on their retellings of the Great Flood. By completing a thorough analysis of the Great Flood myth, one can gain a better understanding of the beliefs of each culture and how they manifest in their religious manuscripts and affect their societies as a ... • 5. Examples Of Allegory In Dantes Inferno Inferno, written by Dante Alighieri in the early 1300s, discusses Dante s journey through Hell. Dante is the protagonist in this comedy. While its genre is comedy, comedy during the middle ages was known to have a happy ending, Inferno has also been referenced to as an epic poem or a long narrative. The happy ending in Inferno or Dante s other works in conjunction with Inferno would be Paradise or Heaven. Dante goes through his journey in hell with Virgil. Virgil is in Hell because he lived in a time before Christ appeared on Earth, but has gotten orders to guide Dante through Hell. The journey is in the best interest of Dante possibly for sins he may have done. One major theme of Inferno is actions and how it affects a certain person s reputation. Dante discusses the levels of Hell and how one person sinned to get to that level. There are 9 levels throughout Hell, starting with Ante Inferno or the Neutrals and ending with fraudulent which consists of hypocrites and thieves and also treacherous people. • 8. Comparing Chopin s The Story Of An Hour And The Awakening Every author has some driving force behind them when they choose to write a story. Among these motivations, social issues seem to be the most influential of topics. This is reflected throughout the writings of Kate Chopin, especially in her literary works The Story of an Hour, and The Awakening . Chopin s use of characterization in this story, as well as her other works, provide themes that further prove her motivations to revolve around the issues of gender inequality in the times her her writings. Mrs Mallard is presented as the stereotypical housewife and characterized as such in The Story of an Hour . Typically, the matron in this time period is portrayed as sensitive and weak, and Chopin at first makes Mallard seem to fit this stereotype. In the first three paragraphs, Mallard is indirectly made to seem to be frail in the way she is initially notified of her husband s supposed death. ...In broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. (Chopin), makes the reader believe that Mallard is unable to comprehend the news as everyone else would be able to. Therefore, her reaction to her husband s death may say that she was not completely satisfied in the relationship. This only provides more reasoning for her reaction to the ... The internet revolution or the information age has fundamentally changed the way the world is run in every facet. Every industry has adapted or been revolutionised by the information age, with media being no exception. As new forms of media emerged, concepts such as online gaming and online gambling became reality in the 2000 s. That key factor was that the internet was all artificial stimulus. The internet is artificial stimulus, it is not real or tangible, one cannot go a physically grab or hold the internet. According to Baudrillard, in the electronic era, it is the real that has become our utopia but a utopia that is no longer in the realm of possible that can only be dreamt of as one would dream of a lost object (Baudrillard, 1991, pg.123). Baudrillard feared what was the simulation simulacra, the concept of a system in which their aim is maximum operation, hyperreality total control (Baudrillard, pg, 1991, pg.309). One character that changes dramatically is the main character, Sophie. At the beginning of the novel, Sophie is introduced as a sheltered girl, terrified of the outside world. Sophie experiences many things that influence her to become a young woman that is willing to sacrifice her safety for the people she loves. She is influenced mostly by the antagonist, Angel. Angel supports Sophie in ways that make her want to change herself. Sophie changes positively throughout the story into a strong, fearless person, and Angel s love for her is what makes her capable of that change. Sophie introduces herself in the story as a nerdy, outcasted teenage girl, I always thought of myself as a free floating one celled amoeba, minding my own business. The other kids at school were all parts of a larger organism. . . Not particularly noticed, definitely not appreciated, just an amoeba swimming around aimlessly (9). Sophie feels as if she does not belong where she grew up, she has always felt like she was on the outside. Her father, a drug dealer and felon, left her mother when she was first born. Because of her extreme self esteem issues, Sophie blames herself for her father leaving. • 12. Medical Use of Psilocybin Essay During a visit to Mexico, Gordon Wasson, a mycologist, discovered the use of psilocybin mushroom in spiritual ceremonies by Indian tribes. Upon experiencing the spiritual and hallucinatory effects of the mushroom, Wasson returned to the area accompanied by an experienced mycologist, Roger Heim, who managed to cultivate the mushroom once in France and send samples of it to the scientist who had discovered lysergic acid, Albert Hoffman. From the mushrooms, Hoffman successfully isolated two compounds which he further named psilocybin and psilocin. This process is called dephosphorylation. Aqueous solutions of psilocybin are very sensitive to light and rapidly oxidize in its presence. A great variety of analytical methods can be used for psilocybin identification and evaluation. Amongst them are thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography used along with mass spectrometry , infrared spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography. Treatment Although prescribed use of psilocybin is rare nowadays for medicinal purposes; many tests have been done on its medicinal uses in patients with personality disorders. Some tests have shown a noticeable reduction in obsessive compulsive disorder as a result of psilocybin use. Psilocybin has also been tested and is sometimes administered to cancer patients and has been proven to ease mental stress and the emotional baggage caused by cancer by changing the patient s perspective on his/her situation and life in general. This compound has also been proven to reduce the pain resulting from cluster headaches in 85 % of patients tested and distanced the frequency of the attacks in 96% of patients. Sea Urchin (Lytechinus Purpuratus) Fertilization The Effect of Salinity on Sea Urchin (Lytechinus purpuratus) Fertilization Nicky Friedman, Lewis Sorokin, Alyssa Raifsnider, Jake Lippi Franklin and Marshall College, October 4, 2016 Introduction Due to an influx of freshwater from melting polar ice caps, the overall saline concentration of various saltwater environments has been steadily decreasing for years, thereby endangering their inhabitants (Lessios, 2008). For these organisms, including Lytechinus purpuratus, a species of sea urchin, this environmental change has the potential to harm many of their natural functions. As such, it would be expected that the gametes of this organism would not be able to properly fertilize when their natural environment is altered. In this experiment, L. purpuratus eggs were exposed to a natural environmental saline concentration (Cowart et al., 2008), as well as two environments above and two environments below this natural saline concentration. This was done in order to test their ability to be fertilized and the rate at which they fertilize under this environmental stress. It was believed that the conditions below the natural saline environment would have a greater adverse effect on the fertilization success of the sea urchin eggs than the environments above the natural saline solution. Starring Will Smith, and directed by Francis Lawrence, the movie utilizes a viral outbreak, instead of a bacterium (like the book), to spread the disease (Lawrence). Dr. Alice Krippin genetically engineers the measles virus to act as an anti cancer treatment. She remarks in an interview that out of the 10,009 clinical trials, there have been 10,009 confirmed cancer free patients. However, the Krippin virus mutates within the bodies of the patients and begins destroying what makes them human. KV becomes transmittable through saliva. New York City is put into a quarantine when the number of infected become too great, and U.S. Army virologist, Robert Neville, is working to find a solution to prevent further spread. The virus mutates further and is airborne, leading the president to order the destruction of the bridges leading off Manhattan and quarantine all the infected on the island. Revealed through flashbacks, Robert Neville s family dies because of this order. In an attempt to save his wife and child, he has them evacuated from the Southport dock, but as the helicopter is taking off, another helicopter collides with theirs, ending in a ball of fire. After ten days, they gave the groups chocolate pudding. The data revealed that the rats that had been fed both sugar sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages consumed more calories than the rats that only drank the sugar sweetened beverage (Global Healing Center). Most of us want to think that we are capable of making logical decisions. Goldstein (2011) suggest deductive and inductive reasoning are part of the decision making process. Deductive reasoning arrives at a conclusion based on multiple premises that are assumed to be true and inductive reasoning arrives at a conclusion based on what is probably true about the evidence (Goldstein, 2011). They are held to higher standards of ethical behavior for their roles and duties, including their decision making processes (Rogerson, Gottlieb, Handelsman, Knapp, Younggren, 2011). Conversely, when decisions involve complex circumstances, making ethical decisions can become complicated. Ethical knowledge does not always generate ethical behavior (Rogerson et al., 2011). Certain circumstances have personal and interpersonal influences that affect decisions, and intuition may have a larger effect. Rogerson et al., (2011) argues that in the field of psychology, these professionals can improve decision making processes by including a broader range of factors that can persuade decision and judgment. Conception Of Negative Liberty In Robert Wright s Black Boy The one conception of liberty that offers the most morally defensible analysis of a person in both of these circumstances is Negative Liberty, as it removes the restrictions on one s ability to make something of themselves and survive. The one conception of liberty that offers the least morally defensible analysis is Positive Liberty, as it above and beyond what is necessary for a person to survive and thrive. Positive Liberty asks that we provide everything that one needs to thrive, while Negative Liberty maintains that we remove the restrictions on being able to attain those resources that are required for Positive Liberty to exist. Our majesty is nothing less than the kind, honorable, and noble man one would expect him to be. On the contrary, however, there was one particular incident which startled me greatly, and now I am fearful for my own life as well those in the kingdom. Ere the day before, King Macbeth hosted the most elegant of all banquets in celebration of his crowning. All was well; his servants and I tended to the guests with ease. Without any notice, a mysterious, dark man emerged from the door s shadow and our King shortly excused himself and proceeded to greet the man, privately. The chills turned to solid ice as our Majesty, AGAIN, cursed and pointed at the invisible being in the chair. A magician named Merlin rescued Arthur and took him to a knight named Sir Ector, who was a friend of the king. There, Sir Ector raised Arthur as a son while raising his only child, Sir Kay was a knight in training. Nobody, not even Arthur knew he was a prince and the next king of England. Without a ruler, the kingdom started to panic and fight over who should be the next king of England. To settle the argument, Merlin created Excalibur, which was the sword in the stone. Without the unique methods of Censorship, what kinds of films would be being released into the public? Throughout this essay I will be explaining the steps taken to achieve the level of Censorship, that we have now. In 1900 1950 every movie in the world was rated before being released. The government, of the country in which the movie was made always did this. In 1956 the rules were changed. Each movie s script was now required to go before a Film Board, before being produced. In 1953 a producer named Otto Preminger, made a movie called The Moon is Blue . This movie caused the collapse of the Production Code from previous years. The movie caused such controversy because of one line in it a professional virgin . Because in 1953 the scripts of movies were read before they were produced, and the organization CARA was not yet established, Otto Preminger was not given a seal of approval. Before he was denied a seal of approval, we were given the opportunity to cut the line out of the movie and go on. So he agreed to cut it out, but the rest of the movie had quotes in it that implied similar things to that. This is what started the slow loss of power for the Production Code. The Code was renewed in 1956, 1961 and then in 1968 the new approach of the organization CARA was reached. As of 1990, the Motion Picture Association of America has a newer system of rating movies. It is quite similar to that of 1968. There are now five categories: 1. G general audiences 2. PG parental guidance advised. 3. PG 13: parental guidance advised for anyone under 13 years of age. 4. Mechanical calculators came on the scene shortly after the slide rule was developed. Instead of needing the operator to apply algorithms to perform calculations as was the case with manual calculators, a mechanical calculator implemented algorithms autonomously. The operator entered the numbers for the calculations and pulled a lever/turned a wheel and the calculation would be carried out. Mechanical calculators were developed in 1623, one of them was called Shickard s calculator, which contained a series of interlocking gears. It had ten spokes and each spoke on a gear represented a digit. Each time that the gear made one complete revolution, it moved on to the next gear which was one notch to the left in order to carry the one . Moving on to 1642, Blaise Pascal developed what was known as the pascaline. A pascaline was a mechanical device that was used for both addition and subtraction as well as division and multiplication. Gottfried Whilhelm von Leibniz created a similar calculator in 1673. In 1820, however, Thomas de Colmar s Arithmometer was the first mass produced mechanical calculator. Soon, calculators wouldn t need human power in order to operate. In 1822, Charles Babbage created plans for a device that would be called the Difference Engine that would run only on steam power. Furthermore, planning helps when there is a problem, because if we had a plan we can proactively address problems and their impact on the project or goal is reduced. Furthermore, for a evidence based manager, there is always a learning phase, because everyday there is always new research done to help managers in their decisions making, which makes managers bring continuance value to an organisation. As, more managers start adopting evidence based management the gap between manager, scholars and educators become closer, which helps in building a community for information gathering and sharing. I would use the 6 principles used by Rosseau McCarthy (2007) as a guideline to manage a modern organisation. Firstly, I would manage an organisation using principles and theories of behaviour in and out of an organisation that is supported by the best available research. Secondly, mastering decision awareness which is knowing when an action or non action is a decision in itself, that if done properly can motivate employees and organisation performance. Furthermore, as a manager, I would only make decisions when I have the whole picture of the situation. Moreover, I will manage an organisation by adapting my knowledge and using effectively in different settings and circumstances. Because the lectures are outside of class, there is more time for discussion and clarification. The lectures in strictly face to face courses are presented in class, so there is not usually enough time for in depth discussions. MOOCs are entirely online, so there is no meeting for discussion. Blended courses do meet and have time for discussions, but there are some drawbacks as well. For example, if a student has a question that he or she cannot find the answer to, the student will have to wait until the next in class meeting or email the professor to get the answer. In face to face classes, the student could ask the professor immediately, but a student in a blended course would still be able to eventually ask the professor in person, which is an advantage over a MOOC. Even though face to face classes have more access to professors, and MOOCs do not require the student to come to campus, blended courses remain beneficial to students because they provide more time for discussions and clarification than other types of classes. Aside from more in class discussion, blended courses also allow students to set their own paces. Past trends and movements were observed. To put new wave apart it took a more direct approach. It utilized new equipment such as smaller, more portable 16mm cameras. A voyeuristic approach was often used, shooting scenes from a distance away with long lenses, as if the characters were being spied on. The term New Wave became widely used to describe a group of young French directors new to the scene towards the end of the 1950s. • 41. Comparing Haiti And Haiti Living on an island with two third world countries; the Dominican Republic and Haiti, I ve seen firsthand the major differences between both of them. The Dominican Republic has evolved from a Spanish colony, while Haiti was originally French. Throughout the years, Haiti has become known for suffering from poverty, misery, and distress. Pauperism has become a huge issue for the Haitians and prosperity of the country as a whole due to a lack of health, education, and social services. Back in 2014 and 2015, the school I used to attend in the Dominican Republic organized trips to orphanages in Haiti. 80 percent of the 32 000 orphans across the 760 orphanages have parents who want them, but they are not able to support their children. The organized trips were crucial in forming me as a caring and loving person. Before, I wouldn t have been able to imagine how heart breaking watching these starving, cheerless children would be. I always visualized kids as playful, blissful, and joyful creatures. However, looking at the Haitian orphans I realized how cruel reality can be to people. It was the first time I ve faced such conditions, and I strongly rejected the fact who there are people in the world that may deserve even a little part of it. There was also ... • 42. All Soul s Day Myths According to a Roman Catholic tradition, a pilgrim returning from the Holy Land took refuge on a rocky island during a storm. There he met a hermit, who told him that among the cliffs was an opening to the infernal regions, through which flames ascended, and where groans of the tormented were distinctly audible. The pilgrim told Odilo, who was the head of the monks in a town in eastern France, who appointed the day following (November 2) to be set apart for the benefit of those souls in purgatory ( ). What has yet to be investigated is what today s symbols of All Soul s Day mean to those who celebrate it. To accomplish this, I analyze the myths that surrounded All Soul s Day, and I focus on how the symbols that come out of these myths help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, there are some myths that surround death itself. In the Netherlands and in Mexico it is believed that the souls of the children return to their families on November first, while November second is set aside for the departed adults. When the souls return, they come to be with their living relatives. However, they do not come back to scare or haunt people like many people believe (Quartier, 2010). If we take a look at the myth deeper we realize that it is a deliverance myth, because the souls are being reunited with their families. In this context if we look at Joseph Campbell s Functions of Myth we can relate this myth to the function that says it is supposed to evoke in the individual a sense of being grateful, affirmative awe before the monstrous mystery that is existence ( ). The sense of being grateful comes from the fact that the families are able to be with their loved ones again. The second myth about death comes from England, Scotland and Wales. The souls of loved ones come to search for warmth and affection. The living helped these souls find what they were looking for, by setting up bonfires to lead the way. Along with the bonfires there were traditions including decorating graves, special church service, and all night vigils. When the souls returned it was believed at this time human beings were able to truly see how the world is (Beckman, 2016). This myth could be seen as deliverance, because it is allowing the souls to come back to their families along with that the living people are able to see how the world really is. Then if we look at Joseph Campbell s Functions of Myth we could argue that the third function about sociological order about what is right and what is wrong relates to this myth, because the ultimate goal of the souls returning is to allow the people to see what the world is really ... • 43. Summary Of The Lost Letters Of Pergamum Longenecker s The Lost Letters of Pergamum encapsulates the socio historical, cultural, and political atmosphere of the first century setting in which Mark s Gospel would have been experienced. Understanding Jesus in context of this background alters the way I understand the Gospel of Mark. Specific passages in Mark can be reflected upon based on the socio historical, cultural, and political aspects of the setting described in Longenecker s book. In The Lost Letters of Pergamum, readers see Euphemos and Antipas admonishing Luke against associating himself with Christians for they worship and follow a different lord than the emperor as well as endorse an empire other than Rome. In the time following the destruction of the temple, the people attributed their wealth, social status, and success to having favor with the gods. In fact, Antipas goes as so far as to say the gods made the Roman empire eternal and sovereign. Antipas attributes his rise in social status to the gods. Jesus, on the other hand, does not look at riches that way. When a rich man fell at the feet of Jesus asking how to inherit eternal life, Jesus instructed the man to sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow Him (Matthew 10:17 31). This goes against the aforementioned social belief throughout the history of Rome. This means that riches are not in fact a sign of favor from the gods. Additionally, in Mark 13, Jesus speaks of the destruction of the temple. When Antipas read this section, he realized that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This ancient concept and theory are still highly discussed and used to analyze numerous pieces of literature to this day. One piece that could be considered as an ideal tragedy is the play Oedipus the King written by Sophocles. An example of the use of fear to bring emotion to the reader in Oedipus the King is when the city of Thebes is suffering from a plague that destroys fields of crops as well as the fertility of its woman. A blight is on the fruitful plants of the earth, a blight is on the cattle in the fields, a blight is on our women that no children are born to them; a God that carries fire, a deadly pestilence, is on our town (Sophocles 26 30). At the beginning of the play when Oedipus is asking the people of Thebes why they are sitting in front of his palace, a Priest explains that there is a plague going on in the city and they want an end to it. It is later known that the plague will never end until the murderer of Laius, the king of Thebes before Oedipus, is found. Oedipus vows to find the murderer, which eventually leads to him finding out he was the one who killed his father and married his own mother, thus fulfilling his fate. This extracts pity from the reader, for all the character tried their hardest to run from the prophecy but in the end, it still catches them. Lastly, tragedy can be seen throughout the entire play, as readers see the steady downfall of a hero, who was heavily influenced by his hubris or pride. Aristotle s ideal tragic hero is one the must exceed the average man intellectually, physically and mentally. Oedipus not only travels throughout the city defeating numerous foes, but eventually becomes the king of Thebes. Not only that, according to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many of the major resorts have been built on culturally significant sites. Construction of tourist related businesses have played a huge part in the destruction of ancient Hawaiian burial grounds, archaeological historic sites and sacred places. In fact, on the island of Kauai, a well known ancient Hawaiian burial ground was excavated to make room for a huge condominium resort project. Out of 22 acres of sacred burial grounds, only a one acre parcel was left, and human remains were displaced and moved to make room for the project. This was devastating to the native Hawaiians who had loved ones buried there for centuries, but seemed to be insignificant to the tourism industry that seemed only to be worried about their new project and making money.
