Dahlmann's South and its values are further substantiated in opposition to those of the North. The
North is physically where Dahlmann works and lives, the city of Buenos Aires, and mentally
portrayed as a place of identity crisis, fear, and restriction, as enacted in the sanatorium: though
Dahlmann is cured of his illness there, he suffers many symbolic miseries. Right after he wakes up
from the operation, he finds himself "in a cell much like the bottom of a well" (Borges 25). The
word "cell" implies that he is trapped in the sanatorium like a prisoner in a jail. It's a metaphor for

What does it take for one to go over the edge? "The Gospel According to Mark" is a short story
written by Latin American author Jorge Luis Borges, first published in 1970. Borges short story, as
suggested by the title, is focuses on ideas of the religion of Christianity, and it also critiques on
humans and their overall nature. The plot of the "The Gospel..." can only be brought to its full
potential due to the carefully written setting that allows for every other aspect to stand out. The plot
of the story revolves around a man named Balthazar Espinosa who takes in a working family after a

The Gutre family is notably illiterate and are hardly known to speak, and it is easy to believe that
their characters don't take to learning anything that isn't necessary for living out in the country (103).
When the flood comes they are required to enter the main home with Espinosa, by taking in an area

for them to interact, and this interaction is increased when Espinosa begins to read to them (103).

would have a lasting effect. Two of the main changes felt by the gauchos included social and
economic restructuring. One must understand that history about the gauchos can potentially be
biased. This is due to the fact that only news that is interesting is reported and only bad news is
interesting. This clash of recorded history and actual history causes us to question what actually
occurred during this time period. The gauchos' lifestyle suffered greatly because of these social and

Gauchos' social lives covered many interesting areas. These traditional acts decreased because of the
new laws. Previously, gauchos would roam the pampa, continuously moving onward to unknown
destinations. This freedom became restricted with the invention of the fence. The fence also
impacted other areas of the gauchos' lives including economically. The fence forced the change from
a ranching to farming. The need for ranchers decreased, which put gauchos out of work. These
fences also kept animals contained to specific pastures. Before this gauchos would kill roaming
horses for fun, cattle for food and skins, and ostrich for feathers. These fences set territories that

social lives slowed down enormously because of the military. They had to work continuously.
Economically they benefited because they no longer had to look for ways to support their basic
