The Between Politics, Media, And The Public Sphere
From a historical perception, Matthias Karmasin, Gabriele Melischek, Josef Seethaler and Romy
Wöhlert (2013) believe it is evident that communication has led and still leads to war (ix). From the
written and unwritten rituals of mutual respect and disrespect to the definition of legitimate violence
and manipulation of the culture of war, mass media has dramatically influenced social, political, and
economic societies (Karmasin et al, 2013) In their collection of works submitted by members of the
European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA), Karmasin et al. (2013)
follow the thesis that there is a duality between the changes in warfare and the possibilities of
communicating events (ix). The book is broken into three parts: the first focuses on propaganda and
acceptance of war; part two explores the changing relationship between politics, media, and the public
sphere; and the last portion of the book covers the postmodern war and modern journalism. However,
the book begins with an overview of war, the media and the public sphere.
Philip Seib (2013) examines war and the media in a way that stimulates thinking about how war s
place within the public sphere is influenced by media, and how the definition of news media has
expanded (3). The main driving point behind Sieb s introduction is that the media has retreated from
its proper place within the public sphere, which is to monitor discourse and encourage a broad array of
voices to participate in debate

Totalitarian Autocracy
First of all, Friedrich and Brzezinski (1965) distinguish between traditional autocracy and ancient
tyranny, and in the other hand, totalitarian dictatorship. In their view, totalitarian regimes exemplified
by communist and fascist dictatorships are qualitatively different from traditional autocracy in that
they harness modern means of communication and a mass party in systematic effort to exert control
over the subject population, primarily for ideological purposes. In all autocratic regimes, the ruler is
not accountable to anyone else for what he does and the one who make the decisions. Totalitarianism
is an autocracy based upon modern technology and mass legitimation. The Soviet Union and its East
European satellites, Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, Mao s China and Castro s Cuba are given as
examples of totalitarian regimes. According to F B, totalitarian systems have 6 traits: 1 An ideology
that is the declared enemy of religion, or which seeks to subsume religion within itself, turning
churches and clergy into collaborators of the regime; 2 A single mass party, typically led by one man,
the dictator, consisting a relatively small percentage of total population (up to 10 percent) which acts
as a political vanguard, infusing all parts of society and state with official doctrine; 3 A system of
physical and psychological terror extending over the entire nation, including essential parts of the state
such as the military, secret police, bureaucracy and the cadres; 5

Reed Growth
Action Plan for Reed s Growth Background: Meredith Collins, VP of Marketing, Reed, needs a plan
for 2011 to execute togrow its current market share from 14% to 16%. Margins for error are negligible
as competition has intensified in every segment and current economic conditions aren t looking good.
Recommendations for Growth: 1. Stop the dollar special for each week: 1st step is to stop the dollar
special promotion immediately. This is not consistent with the brand equity and positioning built over
the years. It s resulting in net operating loss of 76% on each discounted item and overall decreased the
net operating profit for 2010 to 0.4% only (details in justification). Moreover, this promotional activity

Porters Industry Analysis Industry Players Competition Players in this industry make money by
applying high volume and low margin strategy. Theonus here is to leverage the economies of scale
driven by operational efficiency to reducethe cost. They buy large number of products across various
categories in bulk from different suppliers and sell them at lower prices as compared to a smaller store
which have limited shell space, product range and category. Net Operating Margins are quite thin,

theindustry competing in 3 segments, from high end to low end of market. They are differentiating
with each other on the following parameters: Pricing as a strategy (shown below in perceptual map) is
used by retailers to differentiate. Some are positioning their price low (Dollar stores) and some at
premium like Reed, someuse discounted pricing or everyday low prices (TopVal). Product
specialisation and variety is another way of differentiation being employed. Someretailers are offering
specialised products, like Reed specialises in organic and fresh seafoods and some differentiate on

The Legal Position And Right Of Residents
3.3B SECURITY OF TENURE
The legal position and right of residents in different tenures vary considerably. Both owner occupiers
and social renters have significant legal rights that are not usually available to tenants in the PRS
(Tenure Trends in the UK Housing System, 2010).
As mentioned previously, at about the start of the 20th century during the First World War, rent
controls were put in place to limit the initial rent that a landlord could charge as well as any
subsequent increase in response to housing shortages. The Rents Act 1915 was passed to provide
security of tenure and to restrict rents in the PRS and remained in play for most of the 20th century.
The rent acts contributed as a significant interference with the property ... Show more content on

Though around the middle of the 20th century where security of tenure was still strong in the PRS,
there were scurrilous landlords that would evict tenants unlawfully, a prime example being Peter
Rachman, he was known for his exploitation and intimidation of his tenants. In response to the
Rachman scandal the Eviction Act 1964 was passed in an attempt to deal with similar problems.
The PRS underwent a mini revival during the 1990s due to a combinations of factors, such as changes
to tenancy arrangement in the 1988 and 1996 Housing acts, the availability of housing benefits and the
state of home owning market (Stuart Lowe, 2004).
With the introduction of the Assured Short hold Tenancy (AST) in the Housing Act 1988, granted the
landlord the right to guaranteed possession after the initial six month period, in other words giving
landlords stronger rights. The Housing Act 1996 furthered strengthened a landlord s position by
making AST the default tenancy except expressed. The Act defines several criteria for an AST to be
set up e.g. the property must be set as separate accommodation, the property must be the tenant s main
home, the tenant should be an individual, thus there are uncertainties that the AST s lack of security
creates long term problems for tenants. Therefore a landlord may choose to evict the

Family Deployment Analysis
Military children and families face multiple challenges just for being part of this culture, these
challenges are not limited to disruption in family routines, extended separations, mental health
problems and parenting difficulties that be related to exposure to traumatic events (Paley, Lester,
Mogil, 2013). One such challenge is deployment. What is deployment, it is the sending of military
personnel and materials to a specific destination from their home installation (Military, 2015).
Deployment encompasses the preparation and personal needs that are needed before, during and after
deployment. All families preparing for a deployment separation go through a process defined by the
stages of preparation, survival, and reunion and with each stage comes with different stressors and
adjustments for the military member and family members left behind. The stages are predeployment,
deployment, sustainment, redeployment and post deployment ((Devoe, Ross, 2012), within these
stages are the seven emotional stages of deployment anticipation of departure, detachment and
withdrawal, emotional disorganization, recovery and stabilization, anticipation of return, return
adjustment and renegotiation and reintegration and stabilization (Morse, 2006).
From a theoretical perspective of ecological system deals with human development ... Show more

offering them a variety of tools for educating, preventing, identifying, assessing and treating family
violence and help families to identify specific problem areas and teaches them how to overcome
difficulties by constructively resolving issues (Anonymous,

I grew up with Authoritarian parent/grandparent along with two other sibling, where it was her way or

punishment that follows and punishment last for more than a day in most cases. I believe was no love,

Counseling And Life Coaching Summary
The book begins with analyzing the different aspects of counseling and life coaching, as life coaching
is not a professional position, which follows along with, it is not indicative to counselling. The author
expresses the idea of life coaching is to better someone s life with the concepts they have identified,
establishing guidelines/goals the client wants to improve upon or change in their lives (Nelson Jones,
2007) It continues to explain how important exchanging information is in life coaching. This applies
to the client and the life coach (Nelson Jones,2007).
Nelson Jones, (2007) describes four areas that help a new coach to use and expand on improving their
life coaching standards. They include relating, understanding, changing, and

Psychoactive Drugs
Psychoactive Drugs are chemical substances that alter behavior, mood, perception, or mental
functioning. Through the consumption of substances many cultures have found ways to alter
consciousness.
Psychoactive substances apply their effects by transforming biochemical or physiological processes in
the brain. The message system of nerve cells, or neurons, relies on both electrical and chemical
transmission. Neurons rarely touch each other; there is a microscopic gap between one neuron and the
next, called the synapse. When a neuron fires, it releases chemicals called neurotransmitters into the
synapse. Psychoactive drugs act by altering neurotransmitter function, they bind to the site of the
firing neuron and inhibit this process so the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the early 19th century the use of dope spread to Europe from the Middle East and China, and by the

The Trials and Tribulations between the March Trilogy Books and the Movie Selma As Martin Luther
King, Jr. once said, The nonviolent approach does not immediately change the heart of the oppressor.
It first does something to the hearts and souls of those committed to it. It gives them new self respect;
it calls up resources of strength and courage they did not know they had . (King) The conflicts met
between the Civil Rights Movement protesters and the white people of the South were incredibly
gruesome. While peace and equality for African Americans was the driving force of the protests,
violence and inhuman resistance was the force of the white people. In the March Trilogy Books,

Lewis and Hosea Williams led the marchers. As they were walking across the bridge, Williams asked
Lewis, Can you swim? (Lewis and Aydin 3:197) as if to insinuate that going over the bridge may be
what was to come, not knowing what they were to face at the end of the bridge. Where a crowd of
resisters was waiting for them. Even though the marchers faced violent opposition and met with
conflict, they continued their demonstrations. The books and the movie displayed controversy
throughout. One example is during the first attempt to cross the bridge, when the marchers were met
by the Alabama State Troopers. It went very dark, very quick, as the troopers barged towards them,
making this day known as Bloody Sunday , March 7, 1965. When asked for his comments in the
movie by the press after the merciless attack on the marchers, King says While rageful violence
continues towards the unarmed people of Selma, while they are assaulted with tear gas and batons like

Analysis Of Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, And A Tale Of...
Oliver s Twisted Story In February of 1837, Charles Dickens s first installment of Oliver Twist was
published. These installments continued to be published monthly until April of 1839. London during
this time period was split almost directly down the middle, the upper class and the lower class, the
middle being almost nonexistent. In the nineteenth century, the English government was ran adjacent
with the church, although the harsh truth of lower class cruelty corrupts this image. The country,
despite its relationship with the church, did not run on the concept of Christianity but the warped
perceptions of the Bible and the desire for money. Charles Dickens s Oliver Twist unknowingly
sparked the social changes in nineteenth century London by exposing the harsh conditions of the
lower class through the life of an innocent child.
Charles Dickens, born February 7, 1812, wrote many classic novels including Oliver Twist, A
Christmas Carol, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens grew up in a lower class family, because of that
his father, John Dickens, was arrested and put in jail for debt when Charles was twelve years old.
Soon after this, Dickens had to stop school and go into work at Warren s Blacking Factory, a shoe
polish factory (Cody). By the time his father was released and Dickens was able to leave the factory,
he had already suffered through many harsh conditions that affected him for the rest of his life. The
feeling of abandonment and betrayal he felt from that soon became

Summary Of Andrés Reséndez s The Other Slavery
Slavery, this word evokes images of West Africans picking cotton in the Southern United States or a
kneeling man in chains asking, Am I not a man and brother. These conventional ideas of slavery
dominate both the public perception of enslavement and scholarship. However, a new voice entered
the examination of slavery: Andrés Reséndez. In The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian
Enslavement in America, Reséndez challenges the conventional definition of slavery. Reséndez
presents a systemic study of Indian slavery through the impact of enslavement on the decimation of
Native American tribes, the complex relationships racial between Native American tribes as well as
the Spanish, and the continued implications of Indian enslavement ... Show more content on

These epidemics occurred in areas with extensive Spanish contact and slaving networks (pg. 14).
Reséndez credits the conquest of the native tibes and the Indian slave trade with the depopulation of
the Caribbean and the introduction of European diseases to the New World (Reséndez, conversation in
HIST 900, 2017). The Spanish were the devastation that all but wiped out the native populations in the
Caribbean and along the Caribbean costs of North America. They were the epidemic that depopulated
the New World. Reséndez s emphasis on the Europeans actions rather than the European disease
changes the perspective of colonial studies and supplements, rather than replaces, existing theories of
depopulation like Crosby s epidemic theory. It assigns active responsibility to Europe for the
decimation of native populations (Reséndez, conversation in HIST 900, 2017). By addressing the
European responsibility for Native American decimation, Reséndez transforms the existing narrative
of Europe s impact on the New World and redefines the story of the depopulation of Native American
tribes. From Reséndez s foundation of European enslavement and its far reaching impact on Native
American populations, Reséndez examined racial components in the southwest. It is impossible to
separate racial tension from the study of Indian slavery. Christopher Columbus s journals as
contemporary letters show the Spanish perception of

Starbucks Canada Case Study
1. Data, information and flows
The notions of data, information as well as their flows are interconnected; however, many people use
them as synonyms. Nevertheless, there are significant differences that need to be addressed. Thus, data
is a raw piece of information, so to speak; it reflects a certain aspect of reality. A good example of data
is the table that shows, which smart phones are equipped with NFC and which are equipped with
Bluetooth LE. The importance of it lies in the fact that Apple iPhone 5 is not equipped with NFC and
that is mere a piece of data. Information is data that has been processed and given a certain meaning.
In other words, it engaged the data, but allows a person to make more sense of it. If one takes a look at
the example which was mentioned more, it is an important piece of information that Apple iPhone 5
does no support NFC: this means that a certain part of the Starbucks visitors will not be able to able to
use the mobile payment option that is based on this kind of technology. With this in mind, it become
obvious that Bluetooth LE is much more preferable. Speaking of flows, one should note that they
represent data and information in progress. For example, a flow of data should reflect the number of
customer served daily in Starbucks Canada. However, if this data is properly processed, it will result
in information flow, which might take a form of

Differences Of Han Feizi And Confucianism
Chinese philosophy is dominated by a set of so called Confucian values. These values, inherent in
Chinese thought, were pushed forward by Confucius himself during his life time in an effort to
propose a better, guided way of leadership. While Confucian values stress the naturally good nature of
man, they stand in direct opposition to the writings of Han Feizi, a legalist philosopher under the first
emperor of China. For the Legalists, the nature of man must be stressed as evil, and combatted under
that assumption. Han Feizi and Confucius take two different stances regarding man s true nature, and
in these differing stances propose varying guidelines for how a state and its leader should act.
Confucianism, under the belief of limited action, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the Analects, one specific line stands out showing Confucius stance on a less active
government. When asking about what they would do if given a political office, Confucius only agree
with the following statement ushered by Tseng His, In the late spring when the spring dress is ready, I
would like to go with five or six grown ups and six or seven young boys to bathe in the I River, enjoy
the breeze on the Rain Dance Altar, and then return home singing (Chan p. 38). By agreeing,
Confucius is noting the preferred method by which an office holder should act, one which amplifies
their connection with inner harmony and helps the people enhance their own. This extends into the
ruler himself as well, with Confucius noting that If a ruler sets himself right, he will be followed
without his command. If he does not set himself right, even his commands will not be obeyed (Chan p.
41). Confucius also notes the superiority of filial piety and respect towards one s family over loyalty
to the state, stating that in his (hypothetical) country upright men conceal the misconduct of their
children and fathers even when against the law (Chan p. 41). Confucianism in relation to government
shows the belief that the inherent goodness in men must be allowed to flourish, even when against

Link Between Autism And Noonan Syndrome
Ghaziuddin, Bolyard, and Alessi (1994) sought a connection between autism and Noonan Syndrome.
All testing done for this study was characterized as a formal assessment. They were as follows: The
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised, Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, and Test of
Problem Solving skills. For speech and language evaluation specifically, the Clinical Evaluation of
Language Fundamentals Revised was given. (Ghaziuddin, Bolyard, Alessi, 1994) Wilson and Dyson
(1982) targeted speech and language characteristics of children with Noonan Syndrome. They used the
following assessments to evaluate the speech and language development of children: The Vocabulary
Comprehension Scale, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, and an Oral Mechanism Exam. A language
sample was also taken and used to analyze pragmatic skills, semantic relationships, and phonological
processes. (Wilson Dyson, 1982) Lee, Portnoy, Hill, and Patton (2005) studied the psychological
aspect of children with Noonan Syndrome. All of the assessments were conducted in the child s most
natural environment, which was their home setting. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
Revised was used to test the children s overall intelligence. This test is often used in many of these
studies to obtain a type of baseline for each child. This is helpful, because then children from multiple
studies can be compared as opposed to children from just one particular study. This is due to the fact

Effect of Detergent Concentration on Membrane Permeability...
Aim: To investigate how effect of Detergent Concentration (cont.) has on Membrane permeability of
Beetroot cells.
Hypothesis: I predict that as detergent concentration increases, the solution will become less clear,
plus mass increases. The increases in mass will indicate that the water potential of the Beetroot cell is
lower than that of the surrounding sucrose solution. The Beetroot discs will become flaccid and
decrease in mass if the water potential of the surrounding solution is lower than the water potential
inside the beetroot cell. I predict that Osmosis will not occur (at 0% cont.) if the water potential of the

This has been shown by a steady increase in Anthon cyanine leaked out of plant cells as the

The purpose of a cell membrane is to control the transport of substances moving into and out of a cell.
The membrane is an extremely thin layer (8 to 10 nanometers (nm)) thick, which is partially
permeable. It consists mostly of lipids and proteins. The lipids found in cell membranes belong to a
class known as triglycerides, so called because they have one molecule of glycerol chemically linked
to three molecules of fatty acids. The majority belong to one subgroup of triglycerides known as
phospholipids.
The cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer. The hydrophobic tails of the detergent
molecules are taken up by this bilayer. The detergent s hydrophilic heads will then repel (Micelle, an
electrically charge particle built up from polymer molecules or ions and occurring in certain colloidal
electrolytic solutions like soaps and detergents) the individual phospholipids and this will mean they
are disrupted . The detergent will then enter the cell, and the tonoplast surrounding the membrane.
Therefore, the higher concentration of detergent, the more detergent molecules, and this means there is
more chance of the extra detergent molecules being taken up by the cell membranes. If more detergent
is taken up by the cell membranes, more

Romeo and Juliet the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, quickly fall in love. The two do
whatever they can to live happily ever after, together. Romeo and Juliet s deep love for each other
drives them to kill themselves, because they believe it is the only option they have left to be together.
The first time death becomes a thought is shortly after Tybalt s death. Romeo was the guilty murderer
of Tybalt, causing his banishment from Verona. This takes a large toll on Romeo and Juliet s
relationship. As she finds out about Romeo s banishment, Nurse says, Faith, here it is, Romeo is
banished, and all to the world is nothing (Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In such shock, Romeo immediately goes to an apothecary to get a poison. He says, There is thy gold,
worse poison to a man s soul (Shakespeare 919). Romeo refers to the poison as gold, because he is
certain that is his only way to end up with Juliet. Furthermore, Romeo travels to Juliet s tomb where
she is laying and takes the poison with him. When he reaches her he utters, Well, Juliet, I will lie with
thee tonight (Shakespeare 917). Romeo drinks the poison and falls right to Juliet s side. Soon after
Juliet wakes up from her deep sleep. There she finds her dear Romeo, laying next to her

My Capstone Experience At Fort Gibson Essay
During my Capstone experience I was able to be involved in a training gym in Fort Gibson,
Oklahoma. In this gym there are ages four to eighteen training. The athletes were from: Fort Gibson,
Woodall, Tahlequah, Briggs, Hilldale, Oktaha, Vian, and Muskogee. The sports available were:
basketball, football, baseball, wrestling, and healthy day to day living. There were multiple trainers
and they used multiple different facilities. Since Fort Gibson is somewhat small and limited on their
workout resources they used: local churches, a gym located downtown, outdoor fields at the Fort, the
high school track, and sometimes even do home calls. In basketball the ages of the day were eleven to
fourteen. The athletes started with a dynamic warm up and athletic work for ten to fifteen minutes.
This helps to prevent injury, provides performance improvement and overall athletic ability. During
this particular trainers warm up they liked involving a basketball as much as possible. The next thing
was teaching skills and using fun drills to improve the athlete s skills. This part lasted about thirty to
forty five minutes. The number one reason kids quit sports is because it just isn t fun anymore. What
we like to focus on here is how to teach the skills and make it an all around fun experience. We aren t
training high school, college, or professional athletes, so we try not to treat their practices like it is
one, commented one of the trainers. After this there were drills and games to

Analysis Of The Fiedler Contingency Theory On Leadership
Question 1:
As a leader, the Fiedler contingency theory could be used to manage employees by placing the most
suitable leader with his or her given style for the specific situation. Fiedler believed that leaders were
incapable of changing their style of leadership to adapt to the situation. So instead, it is suggested that
the situation or rather the leader replaced to match the specific situation. To optimize the favorability
of a leadership situation, three components must first be taken into account: leader member relations,
task structure and positional power of the leader. The optimal leader member relations have a good
relationship between themselves (the leaders) and the followers. A good task structure possesses
standard procedures which are in place to complete the tasks. And finally, the strong positional power
refers to a leader having authority to evaluate performance and administer rewards or punishments. In
contrast, the Hersey and Blanchard s situational theory on leadership relied on leaders were capable of
being flexible with their range of skills to adapt their behavior to the maturity of their followers. It is
comprised of three components: the amount of task related behaviors a leader displays, the amount of
relationship related behaviors a leader displays, and the level of maturity of the followers to perform a
specific task. The first and second components are similar to that of the leader member relations and
task structure from the Fiedler contingency model. Whereas, the maturity of the employees given the
specific tasks can vary depending on the individual follower. Someone with a high maturity indicates
self confidence and the ability to perform the task, and low maturity indicates a lack of ability and self
confidence. Therefore, leaders should assess each of their employees for their varying levels of self
confidence and ability to perform the task. Then they can tailor their response to the individual
employee depending on the four levels of maturity that they display: guide, direct, delegate and
support.
Question 2: As a leader, what form of power would you attempt to use on a consistent basis to manage
your employees and why would you choose this form of power? As a leader, I

The Communication Theory Of Uncertainty Reduction Theory
Stuttering, perspiring, and feeling a dry mouth are a few things someone who has to meet and interact
with new people might experience. Interacting with new people will come with dealing with
uncertainty jitters. This research looks at the different critiques by communication scholars on the
communication theory of Uncertainty Reduction Theory. Uncertainty Reduction Theory is a
communication theory that came about through the research of Charles Berger from the post positivist
tradition.
Charles Berger through Uncertainty Reduction Theory proposes that the beginnings of personal
relationships are filled with uncertainties. Berger suggests that anticipation of future interaction,
incentive value, or deviance can boost our drive to reduce ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using quantitative and qualitative data in a study, the researcher nulls the weaknesses (Creswell,
2014). Creswell (2014) states the core assumption of this form of inquiry is that the combination of
qualitative and quantitative approaches provides a more complete understanding of a research problem
than either approach alone . Researchers who hold different philosophical positions may find mixed
methods research to be difficult because of their different beliefs (Greene, 2007). However, mixed
methods research also represents an opportunity to change these tensions into fresh knowledge
through discovery. A pragmatic perspective draws using diverse approaches, giving primacy to the
importance of the research problem and question, and valuing both objective and subjective
knowledge (Morgan, 2007). A transformative perspective offers an orienting framework for a mixed
methods study based on creating a more just and democratic society that permeates the entire research
process, from the problem to the conclusions, and the use of results (Mertens, 2009).
Difference in Qualitative and Quantitative According to Wyse (2011) from Snap Surveys, qualitative
Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons,
opinions, and motivations. It provides possible answers into the problem or helps to develop ideas or
hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also used to find trends in

Amusing Ourselves To Death Postman Analysis
Clive Thompson and Neil Postman are authors who discuss specific mediums through writing.
Postman writes about the television and newspaper and Thompson writes about the internet age. Both
of these authors use the same approach on their respected mediums. In comparison they both have the
same piece of writing. Comparing side by side, it reveals a bigger idea that the communication
medium always outweigh the cons.
Postman, the author of Amusing Ourselves to Death , discusses how the television has negatively
affected discourse in America. He uses examples and historical research to make a claim of how it is
effecting discourse. The chapter we are looking into does not relate to the television but rather the
newspaper. His central claim of chapter four revolves around the newspaper. He talks about the effect
on society and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Give from both writings, they each present their claims in a positive and enthusiastic manner. Postman
uses a tone of enthusiasm throughout the chapter. In the examples he suggests in chapter four, he can
only infer what was going on. He claims that the people in colonial times were more aware of their
surroundings and into a wider range of subjects such as politics. Using common sense it s not possible
to know whether or not that each person personally knew their neighbor deeply or into politics. So
from using logical thinking Postman only uses positive examples to confirm his claims. These
examples may or may not be true but it is also the same thing Thompson does. Thompson claims all
the positivity of how the internet affects a person s mind. The only difference between Thompson and
Postman is that Thompson states negative effects but explains how it is misunderstood. Another
difference among the writings I that Thompson is able to refer back to other mediums such meanwhile
Postman has nothing to refer back to because he is limited to his example and primitive

increase of sex selective abortions in the U.S., and a lack of proof of the supposed trend of Asian

Voodoo In African American Culture
Voodoo is the modernized term for Haitian Vodou. It developed in Haiti during the slavery era when
African Caribbean slaves were working on plantations. It has roots in African American spirituality, in
Native American practices, and in Roman Catholicism. The central understanding in voodoo is that it
is more about what you do than it is what you believe. While it may be referred to as a religion, this is
actually more of a way of life for those who practice and participate in rituals. In doing these rituals,
the practitioners are engaging in worship of the Lwa which is Haitian Creole for a group of spirits.
These spirits act as an intermediary between the practitioners and God with whom they believe in a
plane that is too high for humans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Hon gan began by addressing the spirits they serve in the form of prayer. Everyone has spirits that
they serve in this community. These spirits are usually adopted from your ancestors. For example, my
Hon gan explained to me that he adopted his spirits from his parents and he has other specific spirits
that walk with him which mean that are just with him. To continue with, in order for the ritual to
commence they needed to ask the spirits for authorization. Each one of the Hon gan s spirits were
called on and asked if he could proceed with the ritual. After they gave him that authorization, he
pulled out a powder. Powders in these rituals are generally used to amplify the ritual. In this case, the
powder was used so that the spirits can carry the message of the Hon gan. It is the powder that allows
the Hon gan to ask for what he needs. The priest blowed this powder into the air in four directions.
Then he took out a white jar candle. Traditionally white is a color which is used to signal spiritual
blessings. He marked this candle with a knife. This is done so the spirits may have passage. Then he lit
the candle and began to pray again. It is with this prayer, that the spirit gives the Hon gan passage. The
Hon gan entered this passage and lit a lamp. This part isn t something we can physically see. But then
he sprinkled powder onto the candle which he says was sprinkling powder onto the lamp. It was at this
point that the Hon gan took the candle and placed it in the middle of a large white bowl which he
placed at the center of the room. Then he took a white stick candle and placed it in the middle of a
small bowl filled with l huile mascreti which is a Haitian term for castor oil. He then instructed the
woman to keep adding oil as necessary and to keep both candles lit for as long as it takes. Which
basically meant for as long it took for her to finish the housing process. Then the woman was given

Explained Behavior In The Classroom
After studying the chart in Chapter 8, I was able to recall many situations where students have
demonstrated some of the explained behaviors. One typical behavior that I see not only in my
classroom, but in my school, is students arguing loudly with teachers. According to Payne, students
living in poverty may argue with the teacher due to a distrust in authority. This past week I was on bus
duty which meant that I was waiting in the hallway with the elementary students calling out bus
numbers. This is a very chaotic time due to parent dismissals, walking students, NRT buses, etc. so we
try to limit the number of students in the hallways. While I was on duty I noticed one of my fifth grade
students hanging out in the hallway with their backpack on. In my school, which is first through eighth
grade, the upper grades bell schedules are different. Therefore, I knew that she was not dismissed yet
and belonged in one of the classrooms. I asked her why she was in the hallway so early and she
responded with, I need to wait for someone. I then asked who she was waiting for and ... Show more

After reflecting on this particular situation, I feel as though I did not do my best to model respect for
my student because I started to get defensive. Instead of becoming defensive, I should have taken a
second to compose myself and really think about the best way to move forward. One way I could have
done this would be to try and understand why the student was trying to sneak out of the classroom
early. Was the class still learning? Or, could I have asked her to be a bus monitor helper so that I could
keep an eye on her while preventing an argument from happening. Understanding students behaviors
and having a toolbox of interventions is extremely important. I strongly believe that I can use the chart
in Chapter 8 to better understand my students and their

Oliver Twists s Fagin as a Character for Whom the Audience...
Oliver Twists s Fagin as a Character for Whom the Audience has Considerable Sympathy
Oliver Twist was the second novel of Charles Dickens. It was initially published in monthly
instalments that began in February of 1837 and ended in April of 1939. The book has been criticised
for anti Semitism since Fagin is frequently referred to as the Jew . At the time many Jews, who had
fled to England from persecution abroad, were so discriminated against by the law that they became
travelling salesmen and stallholders. In these trades it was very easy to drift into receiving and selling
stolen goods. The Jewish thief s characterizations do seem to owe much to ethnic stereotypes.
The first time Oliver ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Jew believed that Oliver should be honoured to be welcomed by his intimate contact because of
the power he had over the other boys showing that he is very dominant. This illustrates that he is very
proud of the children he has brought up to be pickpockets. However, in reality we know that bringing
up small boys to steal is something to be frowned upon. Certainly, this shows Fagin is swollen with
pride with things of no worth.
Fagin is seen as a child abuser when we examine the way he treats the boys in the den. He allows
children of a young age to smoke long clay pipes, and drink spirits with the air of middle age men .
This gives the impression that the boys are being robbed of their youth at a very young age. Without a
doubt, a humane person would not strip the youngsters of their childhood.
At first Fagin doesn t want Oliver to know what he is really like. He uses repetition of the word very
in the context of him being glad to meet Oliver. He also refers to Oliver as my dear which is an
endearing term. Surely, only a kind hearted man, who loved children, would refer to a small boy as
this. However, we see that the Jew deliberately put Oliver to sleep by drugging him with a glass of hot
gin and water . It would suggest that Fagin wanted Oliver to get a good first

  • 2. The Between Politics, Media, And The Public Sphere From a historical perception, Matthias Karmasin, Gabriele Melischek, Josef Seethaler and Romy Wöhlert (2013) believe it is evident that communication has led and still leads to war (ix). From the written and unwritten rituals of mutual respect and disrespect to the definition of legitimate violence and manipulation of the culture of war, mass media has dramatically influenced social, political, and economic societies (Karmasin et al, 2013) In their collection of works submitted by members of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA), Karmasin et al. (2013) follow the thesis that there is a duality between the changes in warfare and the possibilities of communicating events (ix). The book is broken into three parts: the first focuses on propaganda and acceptance of war; part two explores the changing relationship between politics, media, and the public sphere; and the last portion of the book covers the postmodern war and modern journalism. However, the book begins with an overview of war, the media and the public sphere. Philip Seib (2013) examines war and the media in a way that stimulates thinking about how war s place within the public sphere is influenced by media, and how the definition of news media has expanded (3). The main driving point behind Sieb s introduction is that the media has retreated from its proper place within the public sphere, which is to monitor discourse and encourage a broad array of voices to participate in debate ... • 3. Totalitarian Autocracy First of all, Friedrich and Brzezinski (1965) distinguish between traditional autocracy and ancient tyranny, and in the other hand, totalitarian dictatorship. In their view, totalitarian regimes exemplified by communist and fascist dictatorships are qualitatively different from traditional autocracy in that they harness modern means of communication and a mass party in systematic effort to exert control over the subject population, primarily for ideological purposes. In all autocratic regimes, the ruler is not accountable to anyone else for what he does and the one who make the decisions. Totalitarianism is an autocracy based upon modern technology and mass legitimation. The Soviet Union and its East European satellites, Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, Mao s China and Castro s Cuba are given as examples of totalitarian regimes. According to F B, totalitarian systems have 6 traits: 1 An ideology that is the declared enemy of religion, or which seeks to subsume religion within itself, turning churches and clergy into collaborators of the regime; 2 A single mass party, typically led by one man, the dictator, consisting a relatively small percentage of total population (up to 10 percent) which acts as a political vanguard, infusing all parts of society and state with official doctrine; 3 A system of physical and psychological terror extending over the entire nation, including essential parts of the state such as the military, secret police, bureaucracy and the cadres; 5 ... Margins for error are negligible as competition has intensified in every segment and current economic conditions aren t looking good. Recommendations for Growth: 1. Stop the dollar special for each week: 1st step is to stop the dollar special promotion immediately. This is not consistent with the brand equity and positioning built over the years. It s resulting in net operating loss of 76% on each discounted item and overall decreased the net operating profit for 2010 to 0.4% only (details in justification). • 5. The Legal Position And Right Of Residents 3.3B SECURITY OF TENURE The legal position and right of residents in different tenures vary considerably. Both owner occupiers and social renters have significant legal rights that are not usually available to tenants in the PRS (Tenure Trends in the UK Housing System, 2010). As mentioned previously, at about the start of the 20th century during the First World War, rent controls were put in place to limit the initial rent that a landlord could charge as well as any subsequent increase in response to housing shortages. The Rents Act 1915 was passed to provide security of tenure and to restrict rents in the PRS and remained in play for most of the 20th century. The rent acts contributed as a significant interference with the property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though around the middle of the 20th century where security of tenure was still strong in the PRS, there were scurrilous landlords that would evict tenants unlawfully, a prime example being Peter Rachman, he was known for his exploitation and intimidation of his tenants. In response to the Rachman scandal the Eviction Act 1964 was passed in an attempt to deal with similar problems. The PRS underwent a mini revival during the 1990s due to a combinations of factors, such as changes to tenancy arrangement in the 1988 and 1996 Housing acts, the availability of housing benefits and the state of home owning market (Stuart Lowe, 2004). With the introduction of the Assured Short hold Tenancy (AST) in the Housing Act 1988, granted the landlord the right to guaranteed possession after the initial six month period, in other words giving landlords stronger rights. The Housing Act 1996 furthered strengthened a landlord s position by making AST the default tenancy except expressed. The Act defines several criteria for an AST to be set up e.g. the property must be set as separate accommodation, the property must be the tenant s main home, the tenant should be an individual, thus there are uncertainties that the AST s lack of security creates long term problems for tenants. Therefore a landlord may choose to evict the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Family Deployment Analysis Military children and families face multiple challenges just for being part of this culture, these challenges are not limited to disruption in family routines, extended separations, mental health problems and parenting difficulties that be related to exposure to traumatic events (Paley, Lester, Mogil, 2013). One such challenge is deployment. What is deployment, it is the sending of military personnel and materials to a specific destination from their home installation (Military, 2015). Through the consumption of substances many cultures have found ways to alter consciousness. Psychoactive substances apply their effects by transforming biochemical or physiological processes in the brain. Neurons rarely touch each other; there is a microscopic gap between one neuron and the next, called the synapse. When a neuron fires, it releases chemicals called neurotransmitters into the synapse. The Trials and Tribulations between the March Trilogy Books and the Movie Selma As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, The nonviolent approach does not immediately change the heart of the oppressor. It first does something to the hearts and souls of those committed to it. It gives them new self respect; it calls up resources of strength and courage they did not know they had . (King) The conflicts met between the Civil Rights Movement protesters and the white people of the South were incredibly gruesome. Where a crowd of resisters was waiting for them. Even though the marchers faced violent opposition and met with conflict, they continued their demonstrations. It went very dark, very quick, as the troopers barged towards them, making this day known as Bloody Sunday , March 7, 1965. When asked for his comments in the movie by the press after the merciless attack on the marchers, King says While rageful violence continues towards the unarmed people of Selma, while they are assaulted with tear gas and batons like enemy in a war, no citizen of this country can call themselves blameless, for we all bear a responsibility for our fellow man. London during this time period was split almost directly down the middle, the upper class and the lower class, the middle being almost nonexistent. In the nineteenth century, the English government was ran adjacent with the church, although the harsh truth of lower class cruelty corrupts this image. The country, despite its relationship with the church, did not run on the concept of Christianity but the warped perceptions of the Bible and the desire for money. Charles Dickens s Oliver Twist unknowingly sparked the social changes in nineteenth century London by exposing the harsh conditions of the lower class through the life of an innocent child. Charles Dickens, born February 7, 1812, wrote many classic novels including Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens grew up in a lower class family, because of that his father, John Dickens, was arrested and put in jail for debt when Charles was twelve years old. Soon after this, Dickens had to stop school and go into work at Warren s Blacking Factory, a shoe polish factory (Cody). By the time his father was released and Dickens was able to leave the factory, he had already suffered through many harsh conditions that affected him for the rest of his life. The feeling of abandonment and betrayal he felt from that soon became ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Summary Of Andrés Reséndez s The Other Slavery Slavery, this word evokes images of West Africans picking cotton in the Southern United States or a kneeling man in chains asking, Am I not a man and brother. These conventional ideas of slavery dominate both the public perception of enslavement and scholarship. However, a new voice entered the examination of slavery: Andrés Reséndez. In The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America, Reséndez challenges the conventional definition of slavery. Reséndez presents a systemic study of Indian slavery through the impact of enslavement on the decimation of Native American tribes, the complex relationships racial between Native American tribes as well as the Spanish, and the continued implications of Indian enslavement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These epidemics occurred in areas with extensive Spanish contact and slaving networks (pg. 14). Reséndez credits the conquest of the native tibes and the Indian slave trade with the depopulation of the Caribbean and the introduction of European diseases to the New World (Reséndez, conversation in HIST 900, 2017). The Spanish were the devastation that all but wiped out the native populations in the Caribbean and along the Caribbean costs of North America. They were the epidemic that depopulated the New World. Reséndez s emphasis on the Europeans actions rather than the European disease changes the perspective of colonial studies and supplements, rather than replaces, existing theories of depopulation like Crosby s epidemic theory. It assigns active responsibility to Europe for the decimation of native populations (Reséndez, conversation in HIST 900, 2017). By addressing the European responsibility for Native American decimation, Reséndez transforms the existing narrative of Europe s impact on the New World and redefines the story of the depopulation of Native American tribes. From Reséndez s foundation of European enslavement and its far reaching impact on Native American populations, Reséndez examined racial components in the southwest. It is impossible to separate racial tension from the study of Indian slavery. Christopher Columbus s journals as contemporary letters show the Spanish perception of ... • 16. Starbucks Canada Case Study Analysis Case 1 Oct 19, 2015 Jassem Al Saiqal BUSN 6610 Prof. Eric Thompson Starbucks Canada Case Study 1. Data, information and flows The notions of data, information as well as their flows are interconnected; however, many people use them as synonyms. Nevertheless, there are significant differences that need to be addressed. Thus, data is a raw piece of information, so to speak; it reflects a certain aspect of reality. A good example of data is the table that shows, which smart phones are equipped with NFC and which are equipped with Bluetooth LE. The importance of it lies in the fact that Apple iPhone 5 is not equipped with NFC and that is mere a piece of data. Information is data that has been processed and given a certain meaning. In other words, it engaged the data, but allows a person to make more sense of it. If one takes a look at the example which was mentioned more, it is an important piece of information that Apple iPhone 5 does no support NFC: this means that a certain part of the Starbucks visitors will not be able to able to use the mobile payment option that is based on this kind of technology. With this in mind, it become obvious that Bluetooth LE is much more preferable. Speaking of flows, one should note that they represent data and information in progress. For example, a flow of data should reflect the number of customer served daily in Starbucks Canada. However, if this data is properly processed, it will result in information flow, which might take a form of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Differences Of Han Feizi And Confucianism Chinese philosophy is dominated by a set of so called Confucian values. These values, inherent in Chinese thought, were pushed forward by Confucius himself during his life time in an effort to propose a better, guided way of leadership. While Confucian values stress the naturally good nature of man, they stand in direct opposition to the writings of Han Feizi, a legalist philosopher under the first emperor of China. For the Legalists, the nature of man must be stressed as evil, and combatted under that assumption. Han Feizi and Confucius take two different stances regarding man s true nature, and in these differing stances propose varying guidelines for how a state and its leader should act. By agreeing, Confucius is noting the preferred method by which an office holder should act, one which amplifies their connection with inner harmony and helps the people enhance their own. This extends into the ruler himself as well, with Confucius noting that If a ruler sets himself right, he will be followed without his command. If he does not set himself right, even his commands will not be obeyed (Chan p. 41). Confucius also notes the superiority of filial piety and respect towards one s family over loyalty to the state, stating that in his (hypothetical) country upright men conceal the misconduct of their children and fathers even when against the law (Chan p. 41). For speech and language evaluation specifically, the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Revised was given. (Ghaziuddin, Bolyard, Alessi, 1994) Wilson and Dyson (1982) targeted speech and language characteristics of children with Noonan Syndrome. They used the following assessments to evaluate the speech and language development of children: The Vocabulary Comprehension Scale, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, and an Oral Mechanism Exam. A language sample was also taken and used to analyze pragmatic skills, semantic relationships, and phonological processes. (Wilson Dyson, 1982) Lee, Portnoy, Hill, and Patton (2005) studied the psychological aspect of children with Noonan Syndrome. All of the assessments were conducted in the child s most natural environment, which was their home setting. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised was used to test the children s overall intelligence. This test is often used in many of these studies to obtain a type of baseline for each child. This is helpful, because then children from multiple studies can be compared as opposed to children from just one particular study. This is due to the fact that the ... The purpose of a cell membrane is to control the transport of substances moving into and out of a cell. The membrane is an extremely thin layer (8 to 10 nanometers (nm)) thick, which is partially permeable. It consists mostly of lipids and proteins. The lipids found in cell membranes belong to a class known as triglycerides, so called because they have one molecule of glycerol chemically linked to three molecules of fatty acids. The majority belong to one subgroup of triglycerides known as phospholipids. The cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer. The hydrophobic tails of the detergent molecules are taken up by this bilayer. The detergent s hydrophilic heads will then repel (Micelle, an electrically charge particle built up from polymer molecules or ions and occurring in certain colloidal electrolytic solutions like soaps and detergents) the individual phospholipids and this will mean they are disrupted . The detergent will then enter the cell, and the tonoplast surrounding the membrane. Therefore, the higher concentration of detergent, the more detergent molecules, and this means there is more chance of the extra detergent molecules being taken up by the cell membranes. • 23. Analysis Of The Fiedler Contingency Theory On Leadership Question 1: As a leader, the Fiedler contingency theory could be used to manage employees by placing the most suitable leader with his or her given style for the specific situation. Fiedler believed that leaders were incapable of changing their style of leadership to adapt to the situation. So instead, it is suggested that the situation or rather the leader replaced to match the specific situation. To optimize the favorability of a leadership situation, three components must first be taken into account: leader member relations, task structure and positional power of the leader. The optimal leader member relations have a good relationship between themselves (the leaders) and the followers. A good task structure possesses standard procedures which are in place to complete the tasks. And finally, the strong positional power refers to a leader having authority to evaluate performance and administer rewards or punishments. In contrast, the Hersey and Blanchard s situational theory on leadership relied on leaders were capable of being flexible with their range of skills to adapt their behavior to the maturity of their followers. It is comprised of three components: the amount of task related behaviors a leader displays, the amount of relationship related behaviors a leader displays, and the level of maturity of the followers to perform a specific task. The first and second components are similar to that of the leader member relations and task structure from the Fiedler contingency model. Whereas, the maturity of the employees given the specific tasks can vary depending on the individual follower. Someone with a high maturity indicates self confidence and the ability to perform the task, and low maturity indicates a lack of ability and self confidence. Therefore, leaders should assess each of their employees for their varying levels of self confidence and ability to perform the task. Then they can tailor their response to the individual employee depending on the four levels of maturity that they display: guide, direct, delegate and support. Question 2: As a leader, what form of power would you attempt to use on a consistent basis to manage your employees and why would you choose this form of power? As a leader, I ... Researchers who hold different philosophical positions may find mixed methods research to be difficult because of their different beliefs (Greene, 2007). However, mixed methods research also represents an opportunity to change these tensions into fresh knowledge through discovery. A pragmatic perspective draws using diverse approaches, giving primacy to the importance of the research problem and question, and valuing both objective and subjective knowledge (Morgan, 2007). To continue with, in order for the ritual to commence they needed to ask the spirits for authorization. Each one of the Hon gan s spirits were called on and asked if he could proceed with the ritual. After they gave him that authorization, he pulled out a powder. Powders in these rituals are generally used to amplify the ritual. In this case, the powder was used so that the spirits can carry the message of the Hon gan. It is the powder that allows the Hon gan to ask for what he needs. The priest blowed this powder into the air in four directions. Then he took out a white jar candle. Traditionally white is a color which is used to signal spiritual blessings. It was initially published in monthly instalments that began in February of 1837 and ended in April of 1939. The book has been criticised for anti Semitism since Fagin is frequently referred to as the Jew . At the time many Jews, who had fled to England from persecution abroad, were so discriminated against by the law that they became travelling salesmen and stallholders. In these trades it was very easy to drift into receiving and selling stolen goods. The Jewish thief s characterizations do seem to owe much to ethnic stereotypes. The first time Oliver ... This illustrates that he is very proud of the children he has brought up to be pickpockets. However, in reality we know that bringing up small boys to steal is something to be frowned upon. Certainly, this shows Fagin is swollen with pride with things of no worth. Fagin is seen as a child abuser when we examine the way he treats the boys in the den. He allows children of a young age to smoke long clay pipes, and drink spirits with the air of middle age men . This gives the impression that the boys are being robbed of their youth at a very young age. Without a doubt, a humane person would not strip the youngsters of their childhood. At first Fagin doesn t want Oliver to know what he is really like. He uses repetition of the word very in the context of him being glad to meet Oliver. He also refers to Oliver as my dear which is an endearing term. Surely, only a kind hearted man, who loved children, would refer to a small boy as this.
