Stephen King s Essay Why We Crave Horror Movies
Stephen king wrote an essay called Why We Crave Horror Movies. Stephen King is a bestselling
novelist. He is a great author to some people. In this essay he writes about how people watch
scary movies and do scary things to show they are not afraid. He also says that people enjoy
these things. He says that people like blood, murder, and serial killers. He talks about how society
rewards certain emotions and looks down on other emotions. He says that we all feel the emotions
that society looks down on but people don t let them show as much. He has flaws within his
writings and an invalid argument.
Stephen King writes a whole essay about why everyone loves horror movies; but what if someone
does not like scary movies? That is a hasty generalization. If King does not even engage the other
side of the spectra then his argument is easily dismissed. I hate scary movies to the point I will
not watch them. If they are on TV I will get up and do something else. I have seen one scary
movie and hated it, since then I have not watched another. Just the fact that I hate scary movies
disproves his whole argument that everyone craves them, because I do not. In order to have a well
developed essay one must give both sides of the argument. Without that then the essay can be easily
disproved. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses words like you and your. If King is addressing the reader directly then he better be right
about what he says about them. He says If your insanity leads you to carve up women like Jack
the Ripper or the Cleveland Torso Murderer, we clap you away in the funny farm. How is it that
King can call the reader insane if he does not know the reader, he cannot? King should not address
the reader if he is not correct about the reader. King says that everyone is a little insane, but he
cannot compare the little insanity in everyone to cutting people open in the

Review of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by...
Review of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink in 2009
The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 was composed by Beethoven and was completed in
1808. It is also referred to as Pastoral Symphony. In 2009, Bernard Haitink conducted the
performance of the symphony by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
From Haitink s concert on Beethoven s sixth symphony, I was expecting to see the original work
of composer. The symphony has qualities of both the classical and romantic periods and illustrates
composer s radical ideas as well as highlighting his classical influences. Its programmatic nature is
the main romantic feature though the dramatic dynamic changes, as well as the use of percussion
and brass, are also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Programmatic symphonies occurred primarily in the late Romantic and Classical period. The
repetition of the different subjects is a feature is a programmatic symphony and, therefore, a
romantic trait. For example, the bird calls produced by the strings in bar
151 are programmatic.
Haitink s traversal of the Pastoral is a fine achievement, established on tempi that strike the viewers.
On the first movement, he takes it at a flowing, warm tempo. The Orchestra plays radiantly for him.
The played symphony has a nice, firm bass line, revealingly enriched at intervals by the horns, and
its attention to dynamics is meticulous throughout the whole symphony. The first movement ends
in such a way that, the symphony can be heard as a wonderfully civilized and wise account of the
performance.
The second movement is designed beautifully. Once again the tempo is skillfully chosen.
The woodwinds and the strings afford Haitink some fine playing and there are several lovely
woodwind solos for the audience to enjoy. The third movement is lithe and light this is a joyful and
well sprung dance. The subsequent storm is exciting, featuring some thrilling strikes on the timpani.
The finale brings an excellent summary of the performance. In Haitink s experienced hands, the
symphony is serene, displaying an inner radiance and warmth. The style is demonstrative and
completely natural. The pacing is perfect and the playing is glowing.
Even though Haitink shapes

The Fantasies of Don Quixote Essay
The Fantasies of Don Quixote
Don Quixote lived in a fantasy world of chivalry. Chivalry had negative and
positive effects on the lives of the people. Don Quixote emphasizes a cross section of
Spanish life, thought, and feeling at the end of chivalry. Don Quixote has been called
the best novel in the world, and it cannot be compared to any other novel. Don
Quixote has been described as that genial and just judge of imposture, folly, vanity,
affectation, and insincerity; that tragic picture of the brave man born out of his
time, too proud and too just to be of use in his age (Putnam, 15).
The novel has been translated by different people, but it has been said that Shelton s translation has

Don Quixote was a Spanish knight about fifty years old. His real name was Alonso Quijano. He
lived in the village of La Mancha with his neice, his house
keeper, and a handy man. He gave up hunting and taking care of his estate to satisfy
his passion of reading books of chivalry. He had a large collection of romances of
chivalry and in the end they turned his brain. His mind became weak from his
reading his many romances of chivalry (Samuel, 57). His mind became stuffed with
fantasy accounts of tournaments, knightly quests, damsels or women in distress, and
strange enchantments (Grossvogel, 89). His high spirit and his courage never failed
him, but his illusions led him into trouble. Warddropper says, Don Quixote s
madness is not the result of unrequited passion. It is the result of reading too many
books of chivalry. He is a knight gone mad from a platonic love (Warddropper,
136).
One day he decided to imitate the heroes of the books he had read and to
revive the ancient custom of knight erranty. Don believed that he had been called to
become a knight errant (Putnam, 63). Nothing would satisfy him but that he must
ride abroad on his old horse, armed with spear and helmet, a knight errant, to
encounter all

Lord Call Samuel Research Paper
Throughout the course of the Bible, God has called countless to people to follow His plan for
them. Although some remain hesitant at first, it is seemingly impossible to altogether reject God s
calling. There are many examples of this in both the Bible and the world today. Samuel was called
to serve as prophet, Marywas called to serve as the Mother of God, and my grandfather was called
to serve as a deacon in the Catholic Church. God calls everyone to fulfill their vocation, but it takes
people different amounts of time to finally respond to that calling.
The Lord called Samuel to be the first of Israel s great prophets at time when much of Israel was
in a state of disunity. As the people called for a king to control the land, Samuel would serve as
the last of the Judges and a link between God and His people. Samuel s mother, Hannah, was
originally declared barren, but was granted a son after praying to God begging for a child.
Hannah promised God that if she was given a child that the baby would serve the Lord in his life.
Thus, Hannah gave Samuel to a priest named Eli (Bible).
One night when Samuel was asleep, the Lord called to Samuel. ... Show more content on

Epicureans Vs Epicureanism
Long Essay Response 1 To begin with I believe that the two ideologies that I find to be the best
to analyze this case are Epicureanism and the beliefs of Aristotle. Though I may be partial to these
since I believe that they support my feelings on the topic I also think that they make sense for this
case. According to the Epicureans, as well as Aristotle, Frederick lived an unhappy life. In my
opinion the Epicureans are most correct about his case.
The Epicureans would say that Frederick was unhappy for a multitude of reasons, starting with
the fact that his job caused him great stress. The fact that he spent all of those years stressing
about his job, staying up late in the night and missing important family emergencies for work,
means that he was living as happy a life as he could have been; a big part of Epicureanism is
Ataraxia, or being free of stress and being at peace, is something that Frederick did not achieve in
his lifetime. In The Epicurus Reader it says, The unwavering contemplation of these enables one
to refer every choice and avoidance to the health of the body and the freedom of the soul from
disturbance, since this is the goal of a blessed life. For we do everything for the sake of being
neither in pain nor in terror. As soon as we achieve this state every storm in the soul is dispelled,
since the animal is not in a position to go after some need nor to seek something else to complete
the good of the body and the soul. I feel as though the great stress that Frederick s job put on him
caused him much disturbance and terror in his life. Another reason they would say that he lived
a sad life was due to his constant striving to attain more luxuries and just how much he had to
work to gain them. While they say that being self sufficient is part of being happy but how non
simplistic his life was pretty much all but cancels out his self sufficiency. Also within The
Epicurus Reader it says, And we believe that self sufficiency is a great good, not in order that we
might make do with few things under all circumstances, but so that if we do not have a lot we can
make do with few, being genuinely convinced that those who least need extravagance enjoy it most;
and that everything natural is easy to

Violence As A Social Norm In The Media
Whether it s a story on the news or a drama at the theatre, violence has become a social norm in the
media. Today, companies have significantly relied on the use of violence to ensure that their
audiences are still motivated to watch. According to the Media Education Foundation, the level of
violence on prime time televisionhas increased 167% since 1998. Although there is a widespread
belief that watching fictional violencecauses people to become violent, the rise of violence on TV
compared to real world crime statistics over the past 20 years tells a different story.
It is estimated that by the time a child enters kindergarten, they will have witnessed 8,000 murders
and nearly 100,000 violent crimes on television. In a study done by Alert

Descriptive Essay On A House In Childhood
Driving to Long Prairie, on the right side of the road, up a hill with a long, paved driveway will
be a house to the left. This house is two stories with a basement. The first time I saw it, the house
had a worn out, light tan vinyl siding with faded, dark red shutters from years of Minnesota
weather. At the end of the driveway was a garage that resembled the houses color. To the right of
the driveway was a large stone wall that was overrun with wild grape vines. In the middle of the
wall was a stairway that leads to an old, rundown playhouse. Also, there was a large, gray brick
shed further away. Beyond the house are the woods, littered with pine needles from the rows of
trees my grandpa planted when he moved there. The whole area is surrounded by the
overpowering smell of pine, and the silence the woods carries; it brings a calming, peaceful
sensation to me. As the years have gone on, the house and I have aged, grown, and changed
together. Walking up the cracked cement steps, I enter the house through a wood lacquer door.
The smell that first hits my nose is the cigarette smoke from Grandpa. Once inside, to my right,
is the dining room that is typically filled with food and laughter. During the holidays we gather
there and fill our bellies with the food that we have all brought, and stuff ourselves with the
sweets that grandma has baked. To the left as I enter the door is the kitchen which is always
warm from the oven being used constantly with cooks bustling about like bees. If a turkey or
ham was not in the oven, there are cookies or brownies or my personal favorite, rhubarb pie. I
would salivate anticipating the sweet, tart taste to hit my lips, and I would devour it with greed.
Straight ahead of the entrance is the basement door. The basement steps are simply the wood
floor beams that were never completed. The basement was their storage space and where their
appliances were such as their water heater, which gave off a soft hum. The basement had the faint
smell of vinegar because my grandparents liked to pickle, so they had shelves in the basement
cluttered with jars of various things that they pickled. Going back up the stairs and through the
kitchen is the carpeted living room. The far side of the room

Relation Between Science and Religion Essay
on What is the Relation between Science and Religion
William Lane Craig
Examines several ways in which science and theology relate to each other.
Back in 1896 the president of Cornell University Andrew Dickson White published a book entitled
A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom. Under White s influence, the
metaphor of warfare to describe the relations between science and the Christian faith became very
widespread during the first half of the 20th century. The culturally dominant view in the West even
among Christians came to be that science and Christianity are not allies in the search for truth, but
adversaries.
To illustrate, several years ago I had a debate with a philosopher of science at Simon Fraser ... Show

They were remarkably successful in pushing through their agenda. But philosophers of science
during the second half of the 20th century have come to realize that the idea of a warfare between
science and theology is a gross oversimplification. White s book is now regarded as something of a
bad joke, a one sided and distorted piece of propaganda.
Now some people acknowledge that science and religion should not be regarded as foes, but
nonetheless they do not think that they should be considered friends either. They say that science
and religion are mutually irrelevant, that they represent two non over lapping domains. Sometimes
you hear slogans like Science deals with facts and religion deals with faith. But this is a gross
caricature of both science and religion. As science probes the universe, she encounters problems and
questions which are philosophical in character and therefore cannot be resolved scientifically, but
which can be illuminated by a theological perspective. By the same token, it is simply false that
religion makes no factual claims about the world. The world religions make various and
conflicting claims about the origin and nature of the universe and humanity, and they cannot all be
true. Science and religion are thus like two circles which intersect or partially overlap. It is in the
area of

Truffaut On Love Essay
children chase the lovers when the man chases the women. GГ©rard shows his brutal and child
like nature when he chases one of his tormentors, when he gets him he slaps him, a primal and a
beast just like children would curl. The spectacle of the lovers is always accompanied by either
screams or whispers and extremely agitated and exciting body languages. The children are
constantly reactive to the spectacle of the love that they are seeing. The second motif will be the
connection between love and death. In a perfect way the spectacle in Truffaut s filmconstantly

are the most common. None of the tetanus viruses are airborne because tetanus dies off when it
interacts with oxygen. The difference between the two are that lockjaw happens to everybody,
while Neonatal only happens to infants. For example, they are alike because patients will

Lombroso’s Biological Theory of Crime Essay
Lombroso s biological theory of crime:
The most vivid example of the biological determinism is the theory of Cesare Lombroso. Lombroso
based his theory on the assumption that criminals have certain physiognomic features or
abnormalities. Lombroso wanted to be able to detect future criminals in order to isolate them from
the society. This gave criminology a strong push to create new methods of dealing with criminals
and prevent crimes. Lombroso implied that prisoners had common facial characteristics. If to
exaggerate criminals in Lombroso s theory can be identified through the shape of their skulls,
asymmetry of the face and head, large cheekbones, ears and lips, long arms and a twisted nose.

Lombroso considered this born criminals to be the atavisms of the society.
All the biological theories are based on the notion that biological markers foreordain criminal
behavior. The core of all these theories is that genetic factors or any abnormalities which are
inherited or acquired throughout the life, predispose individuals to the criminal behavior.
Lombroso s theory gave life to probably almost every single biological theory that appeared
afterward.
Among the biological theories the XYY syndrome occupies a special place, as it analyzes why
males are more often subjects to become criminals due to the presence if an extra Y chromosome.
As this syndrome is in the first place associated with the low IQ level of such males which seems
to be a much better explanation. IQ shortage causes the inability to adjust in the contemporary
social world that requires constant activity and flexibility. People facing these difficulties are left
with no other choice that to turn to criminality. It all starts with low performance at school which
results in the awareness of the irretrievable dissimilitude from others which later on results in
deviance. Also such diseases as Organic Brain Syndrome, ADD or hormonal changes according to
the biological theories play a very important role in the inclination to any criminal activities.
Later in his career Lombroso modified

The Battle Of Inter State War
Bull defines war as organized violence carried on by political units against each other (184). With
respect to this broad definition, both he and Waltz posit models of conflict which can effectively
be used to analyze the sources of modern violence. The warrior scholars employ the theories of
multiple political philosophers including Kant and Rousseau in order to build theories that
encapsulate the complex variables which lead to armed engagement. These theories can be
extrapolated in order to explain the causes of inter statewar, and to provide explanations of violence
in the modern global theatre. Overall, Waltz s argument of the three images is extremely
persuasive. The logical underpinnings of the models and the ways in which they collaborate are,
for the most part, concrete and well thought out. His theory provides for three basic ideas through
which the origins of all conflict can be distilled. First, Waltz (1959) provides that thinkers such as
Spinoza place the responsibility of violence at the feet of human imperfection and lack of reason.
Secondly, he postulates that domestic policy of a state will lead to conflict (Waltz 1959). Finally,
the theorist channels Rousseau s The Social Contract to explain warfare as a symptom of
international relations(Waltz 1959). The ways in which these three ideas correlate are what make
Waltz s explanation so compelling. The first two of these images, the man and the state, explain
how a country behaves internally. The

The And Authority Of The New Testament Canon
The traditional interpretation of the development and authority of the New Testament canon is
often a topic of debate and scrutiny; however, Dr. Michael J. Kruger provided an excellent, well
written justification of how the New Testament canon came to be the 27 books known today.
Kruger is President and the Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity
at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC. Other publications include The Gospel of the
Savior, The Question of Canon, The Heresy of Orthodoxy, Gospel Fragments, and A Biblical
Theological Introduction to the New Testament. His written work has led him to be known as a
scholar in the origins of the New Testament Canon, in particular writings related to the New
Testament Canon.
For centuries people have been perplexed regarding the books of the New Testament canon. Many
Christians have accepted the 27 books in the New Testament Canon but often cannot provide
adequate justification regarding how the canon was established. In Canon Revisited: Establishing
the Origins and Authority of the New Testament Books, Michael J. Kruger provides readers with a
glimpse of this tough question and his response. He offers the readers a response to succinctly
justify their acceptance and understanding of the New Testament canon. In a few short chapters
Kruger articulately confronted this very difficult topic.
Michael Kruger s book is written in two sections on the topic of the canonical model. Section

Satire In Mark Twain
1.What is the issue Twain is satirizing?
Mark Twain is satirizing the advice young people are given by authoritative figures on different
issues in life. The words of wisdom used to guide youth usually promote the same ideals and are
repeated so often that in some sense they lose their strength. That does not mean though that the
issues they touch upon are not important. Twain uses humor to actually make young people go
beyond the banality and conformity and ask questions of importance.
2.What techniques does Twain use to create his satire?
Mark Twain uses hyperbole by saying that he is giving his advice beseechingly and urgingly. He is
also being ironic in the beginning by saying that he is supposed to say something suitable for young

It can cause shock in the beginning but that makes it even stronger. He manages to instill the idea
that we are all special, everybody in their own way and the person sitting next to us deserves as
much respect and appreciation as we do. He also demonstrates that we need to live life for the
better of ourselves and others equally because that will bring us true satisfaction.
7.How are the messages communicated by Twain and McCullough similar?
These speeches manage to deliver an important message for young people through humor. Both
Mark Twain and McCullough satirize one extreme to reinforce the truth behind their concepts.
8.Which message could you relate to more? Explain why in a minimum of three sentences.
I relate more with Mark Twain s message because there is a certain point in a young people s
lives when we start to see our parents and teachers more as humans and not as authority figures.
This contradiction between words and actions is something that can lead to confusion. I believe
that young people should more often be challenged to explore things, and ask questions. Rules
and norms are there for a reason, but so are contradictions. But there is much more than just
saying what is wrong and right. Thinking on your own is a step that is necessary for a person in
order for him or her to be adequate in all stages of

Hatred In The Time Machine By H. G Wells
In his story The Time Machine, by H.G Wells begins with a group of Well s friends listening to
the Time Traveler talking about his theory that time is the fourth dimension. The Time Traveler
proved his theory by making a mini time machine and making it disappear. His group of friends
end up coming again, and find the Time Traveler not looking so well. That is when the Time
Traveler starts to tell his story.
Later on the Time Traveler finally had finally finished his last touches on the time machine, and

Relationship Between Hannibal And Lecter
In Hannibal, there is a different kind of partnership as previously examined. This partnership
between the second and the protagonist is dark and manipulative. NBC s Hannibal is a
psychological thriller horror television series developed by executive producer and show runner
Bryan Fuller. The focus on the friendship between FBI special investigator Will Graham, played by
actor Hugh Dancy, and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played by actor Mads Mikkelsen. Graham presents a
chance for a romantic connection, as well as a chance for Lecter to find someone who
understands him. Lecter s fascination with Graham may originate from him discovering a
younger mirror image of himself, and the opportunity to toy with this younger version and get
inside his head. Fuller states, Hannibal sees something in Will Graham that he also sees in
himself. They re both unique and they re crazy (Fuller). Over the show, Graham slowly starts
losing grip on his reality but FBI Special Agent, Jack Crawford, sees Graham s empathy disorder as
something he can use to help others so he keeps Graham on the team. However, Lecter does not

After a long and confusing day, we headed back to the house and thought about all the adventures
to come. The next few days were full of time at the beach and experiencing many new things.
Ernie took us to almost every place in town. The first spot we went to was the local grocery store
to get food that we could make at the house. The grocery store was so full of people that it
looked like a shopping mall on Black Friday. I saw many bizarre foods that I had never seen at
home before. We also went to an elementary school, which was very different than any school I
had seen at home. Almost all of it was outside and all of the classrooms were disconnected from
each other. It was really interesting to see something so different. Later that night, we went to
the town s carnival. The few rides that they did have were so rickety that my parents were scared
when my sister and I were on them. They were giving away many strange things as prizes,
including pet chickens and alcohol to anyone who wanted it. A 12 year old boy won a beer at
one of the games and gave it to my dad. Even though it was different than any other fair I had

In 2008 Ilulissat Declaration, the five coastal states of the Arctic Circle met to discuss the Arctic
Ocean, climate change, protection of the marine environment, maritime safety, responsibility in
relation to the prospect of new shipping routes through the Arctic Ocean, and to settle overlapping
territory claims. It should be noted that the other arcticstates, the Arctic Council, and none of the
indigenous population were involved in the meeting. Although this is declaration is supported by
the United States, the UNCLOS III is still not, which puts the two pieces of legislation at odds with
one another. The other issue with the Ilulissat Declaration is that it once again brings up the

Monotheistic Religion Essay
Religion is something that basically everyone has in common. In all corners of the world and in
all eras of history, humans have wondered about the origins of the world, the purpose of life, what
it means to be human and live life, and what happens after death. What is a monotheistic religion?
This one word is defined as believing in the existence of one god or in the oneness of God.
Monotheism shows the traditions of BГЎbism, Cao Dai (Caodaism), Cheondoism (Cheondogyo),
Christianity, Deism, Islam, Judaism, all believing in just one God. In our society you can voice
your concerns, opinions and state your beliefs as to which religion you need to or want to serve.
Religion is the confidence in and love of a superhuman controlling power, considerably a personal
God. Some may consider it to be an arrangement of confidence and love. Religion adds the reason
to the lives of many supporters, allowing them an energy about the previous life, a comprehension
of the present right then and there, and seek after what s to come in the future. Religions have,
images, and respected histories that intend to clarify the importance of life, the beginning of life, or
the inter world. Numerous religions have sorted out practices, special holidays, sacred spots, and
sacred texts. Any and all religions incorporate ceremonies, sermons, celebrations, feasts, funerals,
weddings, music, craftsmanship, move, open administration, or different parts of human society.

Causes And Consequences Of Malaria
Today, the leading cause of death and most serious health concern in Nigeria is Malaria. All but
10% of malaria cases in the tropical African region occur in Nigeria. Malaria accounts for 30% of
deaths in children below the age of five, a quarter of deaths in infants, and just above ten percent of
deaths in mothers (1, 7). Common symptoms of malariain adults are headaches, weakness, fever,
aches, high temperatures and loss of appetite. In children excess sleeping, nausea, and vomiting are
additional symptoms (7). The burden of malaria in Nigerian is tremendous due to its detrimental
impact on the physical and emotional health of the people and on the economic growth of the
country.
Malaria is caused by the bite of an anopheles gambiae mosquito with a plasmodium parasite
inside. There are four different protozoa, all part of the plasmodium genus, that can cause
malaria: Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malaria, and Plasmodium
falciparum. In Nigeria 98% of cases of malaria are due to the P. falciparum species, which causes
the most severe form of malaria resulting in death (3). Nigeria is affected by malaria severely due
to its climate, 70 90 degrees Fahrenheit and at least 60 percent humidity. As the temperature
increases the parasite within the mosquito grows increasingly faster. Another factor that is
responsible for the severity of malaria in Nigeria is the rainfall which leads to pools of standing
water which in turn become breeding areas for mosquitoes

I searched the internet for custom computer companies my favorite three are Origin PC, Digital

The South African State Of The Zulu
Writing Assignment 3 Origin of States For this paper, I decided to focus on the South African
State of the Zulu and how it emerged into a state from a small tribe during the Early 1800 s.
Shaka Zulu, The leader of the Zulu and the face of the Zulu as a nation when they came to
power, was known to be a very fierce fighter and strong leader. Born around approximately 1787
as an illegitimate half son to the current leader of the Zulu, he was exiled from the state and
worked his way up as the equivalent of an officer in an opposing states military. Once Shakas father
died, he used his military expertise along with the help of his current tribe s leader to take
control of the Zulu tribe for himself, since he did have the blood line of their previous leader.
Shaka almost single handedly grew the Zulu from a small south African Tribe into a state of
over 100,000 people with almost half of the total population being in the active military.
Through militaristic and expansionist values, Shaka quickly grew the Zulu from a small tribe
into a large warring state which raided many other South African Tribes for their resources and
wealth, and Shaka also absorbed them into the Zulu tribe whenever possible in order to increase his
power and area of control. Shaka Zulu is widely known as one of Africa s fiercest warriors in
history, and he is famous for how he alone is responsible for the Zulu s rise to power in South Africa

In addition, the malls, large houses and other businesses all had security guards. They could be

was broken by towns that were few and far between. Along the road lay the businesses. Many of
the shops had advertisements on them; here, Coke was easily beating Pepsi. Along with
numerous Coke advertisements were ones for local cell phone carriers. Martian red was the
predominant colour of the brick businesses and between the shops and road lay a three foot deep,

Analysis Of Lahiri s The Third And Final Continent
Memory and Relationships in Lahiri s The Third and Final Continent
Each piece of diaspora literature is laced with several underlying themes that make themselves
visible in unique ways. Memory and family are two of these themes that seem to take root in
several pieces. These themes enable the author to add dynamics and depth to anything that they
write. A prime example of these dynamics can be found in Jhumpa Lahiri s The Third and Final
Continent. Lahiri flawlessly uses both of these themes to bring her writing to the next level. In fact,
the relationships, both familial and otherwise, formed in The Third and Final Continent are based

Luckily, he did not have to overcome his journey alone. Lahiri incorporates his family life in
Calcutta with his family life in America. His life in Calcutta was not the best that it could have
been, he quite literally watched his mother die. He had to take on a mature role in her passing as
he explains that, and then, because my brother could not bear it, I had assumed the role of the
eldest son and had touched the flame to her temple, to release her tormented soul to heaven,
(Lahiri, 5). All of the familial memories associated with Calcutta seem to be very dark and deep
in contrast with the familial memories the narrator makes in America. Lahiri most likely did
this in an effort to show the bettering and renewal of a life. A very minute detail of this story
that resonates deeply would be the narrator s son. Though he is only mentioned on the last page
and not even given a name, he seems to hold a lot of the weight of the story and underlying
themes on his back. The son grows up fully in Massachusetts and lives life as a Bengali
submerged in an American culture. The narrator grows afraid of his son losing his sense of
Bengali pride after the passing of himself and his wife, Mala, and makes it a point to incorporate
Bengali tradition into everyday life as much as possible, as shown on page 14: So we drive to

Expectations Of Women In The 19th Century
An Insight into the Expectations of a 19th Century Woman Since the beginning of time, women
have been considered the weaker sex. During the nineteenth century, women were considered
illogical and vulnerable. Women could not partake in employment opportunities and they could not
vote. Men believed that women were the mentally and physically insuperior gender, therefore
women were not considered equal to men. In opposition to this exhausted belief, women are now
seen as strong and influential individuals. In modern time, females have the rights of voting,
attaining jobs, and living the same traditional lives that the majority of males have always pursued.
In the short story The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne, one can see how Georgiana can be
considered a submissive, passive, and dependent wife to Aylmer. Georgiana was the epitome of an
average nineteenth century womanand followed the rules that society had laid for all matrons.
Additionally, Georgiana was a dedicated wife who yearned to please her husband. Aylmer was the
dominant and outspoken figure in their household whilst Georgiana was the meek and
accommodating shadow. Therefore, according to nineteenth century standards, Georgiana
succeeds as a wife to Aylmer. Considering that women during this era were seen as physically
weaker than men, their bodies were also classified as their husband s property. Girls would often
marry in their early twenties, whilst their grooms would normally be at least five years older.

  • 2. Stephen King s Essay Why We Crave Horror Movies Stephen king wrote an essay called Why We Crave Horror Movies. Stephen King is a bestselling novelist. He is a great author to some people. In this essay he writes about how people watch scary movies and do scary things to show they are not afraid. He also says that people enjoy these things. He says that people like blood, murder, and serial killers. He talks about how society rewards certain emotions and looks down on other emotions. He says that we all feel the emotions that society looks down on but people don t let them show as much. He has flaws within his writings and an invalid argument. Stephen King writes a whole essay about why everyone loves horror movies; but what if someone does not like scary movies? That is a hasty generalization. If King does not even engage the other side of the spectra then his argument is easily dismissed. I hate scary movies to the point I will not watch them. If they are on TV I will get up and do something else. I have seen one scary movie and hated it, since then I have not watched another. Just the fact that I hate scary movies disproves his whole argument that everyone craves them, because I do not. In order to have a well developed essay one must give both sides of the argument. Without that then the essay can be easily disproved. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses words like you and your. If King is addressing the reader directly then he better be right about what he says about them. He says If your insanity leads you to carve up women like Jack the Ripper or the Cleveland Torso Murderer, we clap you away in the funny farm. How is it that King can call the reader insane if he does not know the reader, he cannot? King should not address the reader if he is not correct about the reader. Review of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink in 2009 The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 was composed by Beethoven and was completed in 1808. It is also referred to as Pastoral Symphony. In 2009, Bernard Haitink conducted the performance of the symphony by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. From Haitink s concert on Beethoven s sixth symphony, I was expecting to see the original work of composer. The symphony has qualities of both the classical and romantic periods and illustrates composer s radical ideas as well as highlighting his classical influences. Its programmatic nature is the main romantic feature though the dramatic dynamic changes, as well as the use of percussion and brass, are also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Programmatic symphonies occurred primarily in the late Romantic and Classical period. The repetition of the different subjects is a feature is a programmatic symphony and, therefore, a romantic trait. For example, the bird calls produced by the strings in bar 151 are programmatic. Haitink s traversal of the Pastoral is a fine achievement, established on tempi that strike the viewers. On the first movement, he takes it at a flowing, warm tempo. The Orchestra plays radiantly for him. The played symphony has a nice, firm bass line, revealingly enriched at intervals by the horns, and its attention to dynamics is meticulous throughout the whole symphony. The first movement ends in such a way that, the symphony can be heard as a wonderfully civilized and wise account of the performance. The second movement is designed beautifully. Once again the tempo is skillfully chosen. The woodwinds and the strings afford Haitink some fine playing and there are several lovely woodwind solos for the audience to enjoy. The third movement is lithe and light this is a joyful and well sprung dance. The subsequent storm is exciting, featuring some thrilling strikes on the timpani. The finale brings an excellent summary of the performance. In Haitink s experienced hands, the symphony is serene, displaying an inner radiance and warmth. The style is demonstrative and completely natural. The pacing is perfect and the playing is glowing. Even though Haitink shapes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Don Quixote emphasizes a cross section of Spanish life, thought, and feeling at the end of chivalry. Don Quixote has been called the best novel in the world, and it cannot be compared to any other novel. Don Quixote has been described as that genial and just judge of imposture, folly, vanity, affectation, and insincerity; that tragic picture of the brave man born out of his time, too proud and too just to be of use in his age (Putnam, 15). The novel has been translated by different people, but it has been said that Shelton s translation has a charm that no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Don Quixote was a Spanish knight about fifty years old. His real name was Alonso Quijano. He lived in the village of La Mancha with his neice, his house keeper, and a handy man. He gave up hunting and taking care of his estate to satisfy his passion of reading books of chivalry. He had a large collection of romances of chivalry and in the end they turned his brain. His mind became weak from his reading his many romances of chivalry (Samuel, 57). His mind became stuffed with fantasy accounts of tournaments, knightly quests, damsels or women in distress, and strange enchantments (Grossvogel, 89). His high spirit and his courage never failed him, but his illusions led him into trouble. Warddropper says, Don Quixote s madness is not the result of unrequited passion. It is the result of reading too many books of chivalry. He is a knight gone mad from a platonic love (Warddropper, 136).

  • 7. Lord Call Samuel Research Paper Throughout the course of the Bible, God has called countless to people to follow His plan for them. Although some remain hesitant at first, it is seemingly impossible to altogether reject God s calling. There are many examples of this in both the Bible and the world today. Samuel was called to serve as prophet, Marywas called to serve as the Mother of God, and my grandfather was called to serve as a deacon in the Catholic Church. God calls everyone to fulfill their vocation, but it takes people different amounts of time to finally respond to that calling. The Lord called Samuel to be the first of Israel s great prophets at time when much of Israel was in a state of disunity. As the people called for a king to control the land, Samuel would serve as the last of the Judges and a link between God and His people. Samuel s mother, Hannah, was originally declared barren, but was granted a son after praying to God begging for a child. Hannah promised God that if she was given a child that the baby would serve the Lord in his life. Thus, Hannah gave Samuel to a priest named Eli (Bible). • 9. Epicureans Vs Epicureanism Long Essay Response 1 To begin with I believe that the two ideologies that I find to be the best to analyze this case are Epicureanism and the beliefs of Aristotle. Though I may be partial to these since I believe that they support my feelings on the topic I also think that they make sense for this case. According to the Epicureans, as well as Aristotle, Frederick lived an unhappy life. In my opinion the Epicureans are most correct about his case. The Epicureans would say that Frederick was unhappy for a multitude of reasons, starting with the fact that his job caused him great stress. The fact that he spent all of those years stressing about his job, staying up late in the night and missing important family emergencies for work, means that he was living as happy a life as he could have been; a big part of Epicureanism is Ataraxia, or being free of stress and being at peace, is something that Frederick did not achieve in his lifetime. In The Epicurus Reader it says, The unwavering contemplation of these enables one to refer every choice and avoidance to the health of the body and the freedom of the soul from disturbance, since this is the goal of a blessed life. For we do everything for the sake of being neither in pain nor in terror. As soon as we achieve this state every storm in the soul is dispelled, since the animal is not in a position to go after some need nor to seek something else to complete the good of the body and the soul. I feel as though the great stress that Frederick s job put on him caused him much disturbance and terror in his life. Another reason they would say that he lived a sad life was due to his constant striving to attain more luxuries and just how much he had to work to gain them. While they say that being self sufficient is part of being happy but how non simplistic his life was pretty much all but cancels out his self sufficiency. Also within The Epicurus Reader it says, And we believe that self sufficiency is a great good, not in order that we might make do with few things under all circumstances, but so that if we do not have a lot we can make do with few, being genuinely convinced that those who least need extravagance enjoy it most; and that everything natural is easy to ... • 11. Descriptive Essay On A House In Childhood Driving to Long Prairie, on the right side of the road, up a hill with a long, paved driveway will be a house to the left. This house is two stories with a basement. The first time I saw it, the house had a worn out, light tan vinyl siding with faded, dark red shutters from years of Minnesota weather. At the end of the driveway was a garage that resembled the houses color. To the right of the driveway was a large stone wall that was overrun with wild grape vines. In the middle of the wall was a stairway that leads to an old, rundown playhouse. Also, there was a large, gray brick shed further away. Beyond the house are the woods, littered with pine needles from the rows of trees my grandpa planted when he moved there. The whole area is surrounded by the overpowering smell of pine, and the silence the woods carries; it brings a calming, peaceful sensation to me. As the years have gone on, the house and I have aged, grown, and changed together. Walking up the cracked cement steps, I enter the house through a wood lacquer door. The smell that first hits my nose is the cigarette smoke from Grandpa. Once inside, to my right, is the dining room that is typically filled with food and laughter. During the holidays we gather there and fill our bellies with the food that we have all brought, and stuff ourselves with the sweets that grandma has baked. To the left as I enter the door is the kitchen which is always warm from the oven being used constantly with cooks bustling about like bees. If a turkey or ham was not in the oven, there are cookies or brownies or my personal favorite, rhubarb pie. I would salivate anticipating the sweet, tart taste to hit my lips, and I would devour it with greed. Straight ahead of the entrance is the basement door. The basement steps are simply the wood floor beams that were never completed. The basement was their storage space and where their appliances were such as their water heater, which gave off a soft hum. The basement had the faint smell of vinegar because my grandparents liked to pickle, so they had shelves in the basement cluttered with jars of various things that they pickled. • 13. Relation Between Science and Religion Essay on What is the Relation between Science and Religion William Lane Craig Examines several ways in which science and theology relate to each other. Back in 1896 the president of Cornell University Andrew Dickson White published a book entitled A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom. Under White s influence, the metaphor of warfare to describe the relations between science and the Christian faith became very widespread during the first half of the 20th century. The culturally dominant view in the West even among Christians came to be that science and Christianity are not allies in the search for truth, but adversaries. To illustrate, several years ago I had a debate with a philosopher of science at Simon Fraser ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were remarkably successful in pushing through their agenda. But philosophers of science during the second half of the 20th century have come to realize that the idea of a warfare between science and theology is a gross oversimplification. White s book is now regarded as something of a bad joke, a one sided and distorted piece of propaganda. Now some people acknowledge that science and religion should not be regarded as foes, but nonetheless they do not think that they should be considered friends either. They say that science and religion are mutually irrelevant, that they represent two non over lapping domains. Sometimes you hear slogans like Science deals with facts and religion deals with faith. But this is a gross caricature of both science and religion. As science probes the universe, she encounters problems and questions which are philosophical in character and therefore cannot be resolved scientifically, but which can be illuminated by a theological perspective. By the same token, it is simply false that religion makes no factual claims about the world. The world religions make various and conflicting claims about the origin and nature of the universe and humanity, and they cannot all be true. Lombroso based his theory on the assumption that criminals have certain physiognomic features or abnormalities. This gave criminology a strong push to create new methods of dealing with criminals and prevent crimes. Lombroso implied that prisoners had common facial characteristics. Lombroso s theory gave life to probably almost every single biological theory that appeared afterward. Among the biological theories the XYY syndrome occupies a special place, as it analyzes why males are more often subjects to become criminals due to the presence if an extra Y chromosome. • 18. The Battle Of Inter State War Bull defines war as organized violence carried on by political units against each other (184). With respect to this broad definition, both he and Waltz posit models of conflict which can effectively be used to analyze the sources of modern violence. The warrior scholars employ the theories of multiple political philosophers including Kant and Rousseau in order to build theories that encapsulate the complex variables which lead to armed engagement. These theories can be extrapolated in order to explain the causes of inter statewar, and to provide explanations of violence in the modern global theatre. Overall, Waltz s argument of the three images is extremely persuasive. The logical underpinnings of the models and the ways in which they collaborate are, for the most part, concrete and well thought out. His theory provides for three basic ideas through which the origins of all conflict can be distilled. First, Waltz (1959) provides that thinkers such as Spinoza place the responsibility of violence at the feet of human imperfection and lack of reason. Secondly, he postulates that domestic policy of a state will lead to conflict (Waltz 1959). Finally, the theorist channels Rousseau s The Social Contract to explain warfare as a symptom of international relations(Waltz 1959). The ways in which these three ideas correlate are what make Waltz s explanation so compelling. The first two of these images, the man and the state, explain how a country behaves internally. The ... After a long and confusing day, we headed back to the house and thought about all the adventures to come. The next few days were full of time at the beach and experiencing many new things. Ernie took us to almost every place in town. The first spot we went to was the local grocery store to get food that we could make at the house. The grocery store was so full of people that it looked like a shopping mall on Black Friday. I saw many bizarre foods that I had never seen at home before. We also went to an elementary school, which was very different than any school I had seen at home. Almost all of it was outside and all of the classrooms were disconnected from each other. It was really interesting to see something so different. Later that night, we went to the town s carnival. The few rides that they did have were so rickety that my parents were scared when my sister and I were on them. They were giving away many strange things as prizes, including pet chickens and alcohol to anyone who wanted it. A 12 year old boy won a beer at one of the games and gave it to my dad. Even though it was different than any other fair I had been to, it was still an interesting experience. The next day we went to a party with Ernie at Scott and Jenny s, and old rich couple s house. It should be noted that the other arcticstates, the Arctic Council, and none of the indigenous population were involved in the meeting. Although this is declaration is supported by the United States, the UNCLOS III is still not, which puts the two pieces of legislation at odds with one another. • 29. Causes And Consequences Of Malaria Today, the leading cause of death and most serious health concern in Nigeria is Malaria. All but 10% of malaria cases in the tropical African region occur in Nigeria. Malaria accounts for 30% of deaths in children below the age of five, a quarter of deaths in infants, and just above ten percent of deaths in mothers (1, 7). Common symptoms of malariain adults are headaches, weakness, fever, aches, high temperatures and loss of appetite. In children excess sleeping, nausea, and vomiting are additional symptoms (7). The burden of malaria in Nigerian is tremendous due to its detrimental impact on the physical and emotional health of the people and on the economic growth of the country. Malaria is caused by the bite of an anopheles gambiae mosquito with a plasmodium parasite inside. There are four different protozoa, all part of the plasmodium genus, that can cause malaria: Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malaria, and Plasmodium falciparum. In Nigeria 98% of cases of malaria are due to the P. falciparum species, which causes the most severe form of malaria resulting in death (3). Nigeria is affected by malaria severely due to its climate, 70 90 degrees Fahrenheit and at least 60 percent humidity. As the temperature increases the parasite within the mosquito grows increasingly faster. Another factor that is responsible for the severity of malaria in Nigeria is the rainfall which leads to pools of standing water which in turn become breeding areas for mosquitoes ... • 31. The South African State Of The Zulu Writing Assignment 3 Origin of States For this paper, I decided to focus on the South African State of the Zulu and how it emerged into a state from a small tribe during the Early 1800 s. Shaka Zulu, The leader of the Zulu and the face of the Zulu as a nation when they came to power, was known to be a very fierce fighter and strong leader. Born around approximately 1787 as an illegitimate half son to the current leader of the Zulu, he was exiled from the state and worked his way up as the equivalent of an officer in an opposing states military. Once Shakas father died, he used his military expertise along with the help of his current tribe s leader to take control of the Zulu tribe for himself, since he did have the blood line of their previous leader. Shaka almost single handedly grew the Zulu from a small south African Tribe into a state of over 100,000 people with almost half of the total population being in the active military. Through militaristic and expansionist values, Shaka quickly grew the Zulu from a small tribe into a large warring state which raided many other South African Tribes for their resources and wealth, and Shaka also absorbed them into the Zulu tribe whenever possible in order to increase his power and area of control. Shaka Zulu is widely known as one of Africa s fiercest warriors in history, and he is famous for how he alone is responsible for the Zulu s rise to power in South Africa . A prime example of these dynamics can be found in Jhumpa Lahiri s The Third and Final Continent. Lahiri flawlessly uses both of these themes to bring her writing to the next level. Lahiri incorporates his family life in Calcutta with his family life in America. His life in Calcutta was not the best that it could have been, he quite literally watched his mother die. He had to take on a mature role in her passing as he explains that, and then, because my brother could not bear it, I had assumed the role of the eldest son and had touched the flame to her temple, to release her tormented soul to heaven, (Lahiri, 5). All of the familial memories associated with Calcutta seem to be very dark and deep in contrast with the familial memories the narrator makes in America. Lahiri most likely did this in an effort to show the bettering and renewal of a life. A very minute detail of this story that resonates deeply would be the narrator s son. Though he is only mentioned on the last page and not even given a name, he seems to hold a lot of the weight of the story and underlying themes on his back. • 41. Expectations Of Women In The 19th Century An Insight into the Expectations of a 19th Century Woman Since the beginning of time, women have been considered the weaker sex. During the nineteenth century, women were considered illogical and vulnerable. Women could not partake in employment opportunities and they could not vote. Men believed that women were the mentally and physically insuperior gender, therefore women were not considered equal to men. In opposition to this exhausted belief, women are now seen as strong and influential individuals. In modern time, females have the rights of voting, attaining jobs, and living the same traditional lives that the majority of males have always pursued. In the short story The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne, one can see how Georgiana can be considered a submissive, passive, and dependent wife to Aylmer. Georgiana was the epitome of an average nineteenth century womanand followed the rules that society had laid for all matrons. Additionally, Georgiana was a dedicated wife who yearned to please her husband. Aylmer was the dominant and outspoken figure in their household whilst Georgiana was the meek and accommodating shadow. Therefore, according to nineteenth century standards, Georgiana succeeds as a wife to Aylmer. Considering that women during this era were seen as physically weaker than men, their bodies were also classified as their husband s property.
