Moral And Spiritual Parables In The Bible In The Bible
Parable 1
Throughout the Bible you ll discover many parables that tell a simple story of how Jesus illustrates
moral and spiritual lessons. Parables give one or more instructional lessons or principles that can be an
allegory. Parables also hold key words from Jesus readings that are meant to grasp people s attention
and making sure they are hearing what is said. Jesus wants the listeners to focus on what is being said
so that they will understand what He is teaching them. For example, He who has ears is a saying that
is worded differently so that the reader s attention is grasped. It has been said that a parable is an
earthly story with a heavenly meaning because of the hidden key words implemented in the text. Jesus
frequently used parables as a way to illustrate profound and divine truths. Readers can break down
parables and vigorously study them to better understand Jesus way of teaching, but mainly in order to
be able to connect to Him through them. The disciples noticed the change in Jesus teaching and asked
why he told a parable. In response Jesus said To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the
Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it has not been granted (Mathew 13:11). Its weird to think Jesus
would leave people in question. Jesus would explain to the disciples that those who have, to him more
shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be
taken away from him. This was a common teaching in Judaism.

Comparing Poems Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori
Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori in latin means it is sweet and fitting to die for your country .
These poems talk about the experiences soldiers endure during battle when people at the time believed
that this was a patriotic duty for young men to go to war and risk their lives for their country. During
this period, there were no televisions or newspapers that were able to uncover what was unraveling on
the battlefield and trench, to warn these young patriotic men of the horrors that would await for them.
Owen and Horace were once one of these young heroic men that experienced the physical, emotional
and, mental pain of war. They used their story to uncover the truth about war and the cruelty they will
experience if they do decide to join the waste of war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The soldiers are exhausted and unaware of the danger that surrounds them. And before they are able to
make back to camp, they are attacked with gas and being to rush to put on their gas masks. But one
soldier is not able to put his mask on quickly and inhales the lethal gas. In the beginning of the poem,
Owen describes the soldiers actions by using similes like; Bent double, like old beggars under sacks ,
and coughing like hags to compare the soldiers to old, weak, broken, and sick women. He also uses
phrases like Men marched asleep and Drunk with fatigue to express the exhaustion of the soldiers as
they continued on with their journey back to

Essay about The Problem of God in Devils and The Brothers...
The Problem of God in Devils and The Brothers Karamazov
In contemplating the creation of the novel The Idiot, Dostoyevsky wrote in a letter to A.N. Maikov
that he hoped to focus the work around a question with which I have been tormented, consciously or
unconsciously all my life that is, the existence of God. 1 Dostoyevsky s personal struggle with the
question of faith, and also his own experience with trying doubts as a believer, are manifested in the
characters he writes. A large number of Dostoyevsky s books are written within the framework of a
Christian doctrine, juxtaposing characterizations of believers and non believers, enforcing the ultimate
good and reason that follow from possessing a faith. Dostoyevsky also ... Show more content on

Moreover, these childhood associations seem to have strongly imprinted upon his mind, This book
[the book of Job] Anna [his wife], it s strange is one of the first which made an impression on me in
life, I was just then only a little boy. 5
While a large portion of Dostoyevsky s nurturing seems to have occurred in a Christian nest, he was
also exposed to the harsh qualities possessed by man. His father was, though reverent, a drunk, and
was later murdered by serfs on account of his inhumane treatment.6
This rougher sphere of his upbringing manifested itself in Dostoyevsky s early adulthood. He became
involved in a group known as the Russian Utopian Socialists, influenced by Belinsky, a well known
literary critic. The partnership formed by the two presumably shook Dostoyevsky s faith, as his
revered mentor found that as a socialist, he had to destroy Christianity in the first place. He knew that
the revolution must necessarily begin with atheism. 7 Later, though, Dostoyevsky broke off from the
specific branch of the movement, forming the Durov circle. He was arrested for the circulation of a
private letter full of insolent expressions against the Orthodox Church. 8 Evidently, he had forgotten
his mother s teachings.
While in prison (where the only book allowed was The Bible) it appears Dostoyevsky began to
reemerge as a believer, writing in a letter to Mrs. N.D. Fonvizin:

The Revolution On Your Wrist
Revolution on Your Wrist Less than thirty years ago, while Sly and the Family Stone were topping the
pop music charts and President Richard Nixon was covertly scheming to win reelection, the
wristwatch was being transformed from a mechanism of moving parts powered by an unwinding
spring, into a battery driven electronic computer. Challenging centuries of analog timekeeping, battery
driven quartz wristwatches hit the American marketplace in the early 1970s, though it seemed unlikely
the expensive, new fangled timekeepers would sell. Marketed as the Next Big Thing in cutting edge
technology, electronic watches, which were capable of far more precise timekeeping that mechanical
ones, sold surprisingly well. They soon won over the buying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Turn of the century men did not wear these new timekeepers; they considered them effeminate
baubles. Men did not begin wearing wristwatches until World War I. Even during the war they served
a specific purpose: they were invaluable tools on the fighting front. The details of the history of the
wristwatch are beginning to emerge as researchers at the National Museum of American History
develop a new exhibition called On Time. Opening in about two years, On Time will explore the
changing ways Americans have measured, used, and thought about time over the past 300 years.
Featuring timekeeping devices and a surprising array of everyday objects, the exhibit will examine
how we have come to rely on mechanical timekeepers more than environmental cues or our internal
body rhythms. The history of Americans and their watches is complex. Watches aren t just functional
everyday objects that provide the correct time. They are personal expressions of fashion and status.
They are sometimes significant gifts treasured family heirlooms that link generations or keepsakes that
mark important life moments such as weddings, anniversaries or graduations. They are indicators of
the way we think about ourselves. And they are deeply meaningful symbols of the ways we think

Liberal Arts Education In Plato s The Allegory Of The Cave
Patrick Awuah, the founder of Ashesi University, explains that the purpose of a liberal arts college is
to educate free men and woman to become leaders. Ashei was the first non profit liberal arts college in
West Africa. Patrick saw the need for a liberal arts education because he felt that the current leaders of
Africa did not have the creative thinking skills necessary to fix the problems threatening Africa. He
believed that a liberal arts education teaches students how to confront complex problems and create
new and important ideas. The key trait of a liberal arts education is that it teaches students how to
think creatively and allows them space to develop their own thinking skills, it creates a good balance
between societal and scientific knowledge. new sentence/rephrase
The Skidmore College Mission Statement emphasizes the importance of a never ending quest for
knowledge . This outlines one key part of a liberal arts education, the understanding that knowledge is
limitless and there will always be more questions to ask. This idea is conveyed in Plato s The Allegory
of the Cave, in this story, shadows on a wall represented the whole world to prisoners until one was
enlightened and saw the real world. Until enlightenment, the prisoners had no way of knowing that
they were looking at shadows their entire life, because we don t know about the knowledge that we
have not yet discovered. In the same way, we don t know the answers to questions we have not

Happiness And Emotions In The Poetry Of Blake And Rossetti
At first read, Blake and Rossetti s fascination with the unity of conflicting emotion and their tendency
to describe human experiences in contradictory terms might be perplexing. However, there is a reason
behind what seems to be madness in the poetry of these writers. The poetry of Blake and Rossetti
leads itself to the assertion that the human experience is teeming with both joy and agony. Whether
someone lives their life in a state of joy or woe does not depend on whether their experience is
positive or negative, because the human experience is both. Rather, someone s happiness or sadness
through their life depends on whether they choose to orient their focus to the happiness and joy that
exists in the universe or the negative pain that is just as abundant. Though happiness and sadness take
many different forms in the poetry, in each form, they are as abundant as they are co dependent. Blake
and Rossetti take radical steps to express how related the feelings of joy and woe are in time and
space. In fact, in many places, their poetry subtly suggests that one emotion cannot occur without the
other, and that no situation is complete without elements of both emotions.
Blake s first unification of the two emotions occurs in his poem, Auguries of Innocence. Though
sadness and joy are not the main topic of the piece, these two emotions appear multiple times through
the poem. Interestingly, they are always referred to together, as Joy Woe . Never in the poem does

The resilience methodology seeks to build on strengths and strengthen the supports and opportunities
of the child. Resilience plays a vital role in assisting a child in settling into a new placement, without
experiencing major emotional difficulties. Three factors that promote resilience are secure base, Self
esteem and Self efficacy(Grotberg, 2000). These can be influenced by positive experiences on a daily
basis, some which will be highlighted throughout the assignment.
Resilience in an individual refers to successful adaptation, despite the risk and adversity. The manner
in which Matson 2004 defines resilience is very clear to me, as I can relate and reflect this to one
particular girl that resided in the care centre I worked. Throughout the young girl s childhood, she
developed an insecure and ambivalent attachment to both her parents, as a result of their hectic
lifestyle of substance misuse. At a young age her father died from the HIV viruses, which lead her
mother in becoming depressed and profoundly dependant on drugs. Due to the mother s dependency,
she was unable to respond accordingly to the girls needs, given very mixed and inconsistent responses.
At the age of 10, due to extreme neglect, the young girl was removed from her mothers care and
entered the care setting. Over the years the young girl had experienced several placement breakdowns,
and at 13 was admitted to a residential centre. During this time she felt both a

The Death With Dignity Essay
In 1997 Oregon passed the Physical Assisted Suicide (PAS) called the Death with Dignity. PAS would
provide terminal ill patients who desired to end their life with access to a lethal dose of medication. In
order for a patient to get access to the lethal dose of medicine in Oregon: they must be 18 years or
older, able to understand, verbalize the consequences, and be a resident of the state. Terminal ill
patients have been medically diagnosed of living six month or less. If a patient in Oregon wants to
commit suicide there would be a 15 day waiting period between the doctor s agreement and the
issuance of the prescription (The Times). PAS is not only legal in Oregon, but also in Washington,
Vermont, New Mexico, and Montana. More than 70% of Californians support the legalization of PAS
and no bill has been introduced since 2007. American culture has been emphasized that citizens of the
United States have the rights and freedoms to make personal decisions. PAS needs to be legalized in
California so terminally ill patients suffering from physical and emotional pain legally end their life.
Despite religious groups disapproval of physician assisted suicide, some patients may suffer emotional
distress due to their physical state. A reason many people may disagree on assisted suicide is that
people s religious beliefs are against the practice. Religious institutions believe an individual should
not commit suicide, instead they need to die as a result of their illness. Roman

Enkidu Relationship
The character Enkidu also shows a positive side of mortality. His rites of passage to society can be
seen as a positive note to mortality, as it highlights the amenities of life. For example, his introduction
to Shamhat and the enjoyment of sex for six nights in a row can be seen as positive amenity to
humanity. This can be seen as a compare and contrast to his former animal state, where the wild beasts
of the steppe shunned his person (I 189). The shunning is most likely due to the animals not
understanding his sexual desires, as animals only mate for procreation. Moreover, the established
relationship that Enkidu has with the gods can be seen as positive, mostly because he would not have
had a deeper relationship with them in his wild state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Enkidu is downs because he is near his deathbed, for example, the voice of Shamhat from the
sky states, Who fed you bread, fit for a god / Who poured you beer, fit for a king (VII. 90 91). This
indicates a highlight of mortality and being a human, as when you are in an animal state there is no
such thing as food for enjoyment. In addition, when Gilgamesh is in search for mortality, the tavern
keeper highlights some positive notes of humanity, stating Gilgamesh, let your stomach be full /
Always be happy, night and day (X. 73 74). We can see that the poem consistently puts emphasis on
the fundamentals of life, and the dictates a more optimistic view of life. Additionally, the concept of
death is illustrated in the positive note towards humanity. As noted by Shamhat, she states towards
Enkidu that won t [Gilgamesh] lay you down in the ultimate resting place? (VII. 95) and [the] rulers of
the netherworld will do you homage (VII. 98). This thought by Shamhat leads towards a more

Examples Of Chaos And Complexity Theory
D. What are chaos and complexity theories? how might they help us do better sociology, or at least
help us have more realistic understanding of what is possible in sociology? Chaos theory can be seen
in the butterfly effect, where a small little butterfly in the States that flaps its wings and changes the
weather somewhere far away like China. The butterfly effect shows that small changes can have
massive impacts in the world. For most people it is hard for them to think that a butterfly has so much
influence, there are many other examples. Chaos can be seen in this example, where someone forgets
their car keys and runs back to get them, which results in them not hitting the deer on the road (Gleick
1987). Complexity theory states that structures are complex but that there is some form of general
rules. Complexity theory is a part of chaos theory which is shown in the quote, chaos theory and its
spin off, complexity theory, argue that relationships in complex systems, like organizations, are
nonlinear, made of interconnections and branching choices that produce unintended consequences and
render the universe unpredictable, (Tetenbaum 1998:1). Chaos and complexity theory can influence
sociologist to go back and study system that were previously untouched. An example of chaos and
complexity theory is the economy. The economy is very complex with many moving parts and actors.

Analysis Of The Film Amores Perros
Amores Perros is characterized by a depiction of contemporary urban life dominated by violence,
social decay and the corruption of both traditional and modern morality and political values. Yet,
according to some critics, the film suggests the possibility of human and social redemption. Discuss.
Amore Perros is a film about society where life is dominated by pain, violence, social decay and
corruption. In this scenario love is the only tool through which the characters can find redemption and
hope for a better future. In this essay, I will discuss how the social and human redemption is
represented in the film. I will focus predominantly on the character of El Chivo: a hit man who left his
family to change the world. In my opinion, only El Chivo is able to wake himself up and do something
to change his future and redeem himself. Valeria and Octavio on the other hand are not able to learn a
lesson and change their lives, in fact at the end of the film they regress instead of move on. (moving
on).
El Chivo achieves social redemption by giving up his life as a hit man. The moment when he loses all
his dogs because of Cofi is crucial in his process of changing. The loss makes him realise who he is
and what is the true meaning of life. After losing his dogs he kidnaps the person he was supposed to
kill and the one who paid him to carry out the hit. Then he ties them up and he leaves them alone with
a gun (Jose Arroyo, Sight and Sound, 2001). By doing this he leaves his past and

Kennesaw State University Graduation Analysis
College life is an exciting time for young adults coming out of high school. The students find
themselves with so many new experiences to face; many of these changes, from new found freedom to
the unexpected responsibilities, are frequently underestimated by the newly promoted freshman.
It will soon be time for the next wave of fish to begin the transitional life of migrating schools. Any
good advantage is one that is provided before it is of an immediate necessity. Such is the reason that
students attending Kennesaw State University design workshops to coach soon to be scholars to
prepare for and adjust to college life. We began to accomplish this by first deciding how to present

students such as a ceo of a company, the president of the United States, Martin Luther King, and even
their mothers. When the speakers ask what type of leader Martin Luther King was a student responds
with an insperational leader . The speakers then inform the students that although that is true, that was
a quality of a leader not a type. The speakers tell the students the different types of leaders and explain
that MLK was in fact a moral leader, an encourager, and even an intelectual leader. This has peaked
the interest of many of the students, so the speakers decide to ask them a question. What kind of leader

The Decision Making Process At York College
Part Two Decision making, as defined by Mintzberg, is The process of developing a commitment to a
course of action (Dee Bess, 2008,2012). The decision by York College to stop using their old data
mining software was made about ten months ago, and the process for finding the new software began
about six months ago. It is difficult to classify academic analytics as a strategic, tactical, or operational
decision because it has elements of all three. Strategic applies as one of the primary goals is to
improve student graduation rates and retention. It is a tactical decision because the software will be
used to improve the product we are providing our students to better fit their needs. Finally, it is an
operational decision because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Currently, the college is in the stage of developing solutions. Of the different search methods
available, the College is utilizing the trap search and the active search. Outside vendors have been
brought in to demonstrate the services their products can provide. The focus of these products varies,
but all share a feature that provides students with improved degree planners and student monitoring
software. The similarities are outnumbered by their differences, however, which does include cost.
The selection/analysis process is not being conducted by a committee, but is instead being conducted
by the Associate Provost for Student Success. Since there is no committee, he is inviting
representatives from all the affected departments to observe the demonstrations from the vendors and
asking for feedback of on their opinions. This has created some tension among various groups on
campus. The reason for this is that some of the software demonstrated could completely change
resources that not all agree would be improved. When it has been determined that there are options
that meet the needs of the college and its students, a screening process will occur with the chosen
vendors returning to campus to discuss in more detail the implementation of their product, giving the
college the needed information it needs to make a final decision. Even though the search is being led
by one person, the authorization to purchase will ultimately have to be supported by the Provost,

Suspense In The Martian
Every minute, scientists are getting closer to coming up with solutions for colonizing Mars. In The
Martian, there is a main character named Mark Watney. He ends up getting trapped on Mars because
he was on a mission, and the rest of the people on the mission left him to go to Earth. After a while,
Mark realizes that nobody on Earth knows he s still alive and that he might not be able to survive on
Mars. One of the major themes of this book is problem solving. Throughout the storyline, Mark has to
make some decisions that result in life or death situation. This book is highly interesting because it is
filled with lots of suspense, humor, as well as hints about author Andy Weir s life all tied in throughout
the story.

An example of this is when Mark is trying to construct a potato farm on Mars. Yeah. This all sounds
like a great idea with no chance of catastrophic failure. That was all sarcasm, by the way (Weir, 40).

die, to break the suspense and add some humor. Weir also adds humor in when Mark is bored and
doing another useless journal entry. How come Aquaman can control whales? They re mammals!
Makes no sense (Weir 64). Weir adds in little bits of random humor, usually in the middle of
something incredibly frightening, to show that in the center of all this, Mark still finds time to be
bored. In this novel, Weir uses lots of humor to break up suspense and humor to establish a connection

And take my milk for gall, you murd ring ministers,

murder would open the door to a dark and sinful world. At the same time, he admits that his only
reason for committing murder, ambition, suddenly seems an insufficient justification for the act. The
destruction that comes from unchecked ambition will continue to be explored as one of the play s
themes. As the soliloquy ends, Macbeth seems to resolve not to kill Duncan, but this resolve will only
last until his wife returns and once again convinces him, by the strength of her will, to go ahead with
their plot.

King Congo King Analysis
King Leopold set his focus on the Congo because he wanted to rule a colony of his own, something
bigger than just little old Belgium, and the Congo provided that. It had waterways that connected the
land, as well as people that he could use as slaves. A book that he had read titled Java, or How to
Manage a Colony had sparked Leopold s interest for a colony of his own (Hochschild, p. 37).
According to the quote, In the mid 1870s, sub Saharan Africa was a logical place for an aspiring
colonialist to look...about 80% of the entire land area of Africa was still under indigenous rulers. It
was ripe for conquest or, as Leopold was now learning to say, for protection (Hochschild, p. 42), this
land was an opportunity for Leopold to finally build a colony; especially after Stanley had found the
Congo River during an expedition. Leopold s purpose was shaped by a desire not only for money but
for power (Hochschild, p. 39). The Congo s resources were rubber and ivory, ivory was made into
false teeth, or piano pieces, among other things and this produced a lot of profits once sold. However,
the profits for rubber were much higher than that of ivory. The land itself provides the power that
Leopold wanted. Leopold was successful in the sense that he did become the ruler of the Congo, he
did gain profits out it, he did have slaves that built railways, as well as an army made majority of its
own people, the natives. Leopold failed in the sense that he thought the truth would never come to

Elisa Confused Essay
Elisa Confused Like many short stories, John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums deceives most readers
by appearing to be a simple short story. The Chrysanthemums, which only occupies about eight pages
in textbooks, captures the emotional pain of a woman trying to live in the 1930 s. As critic Stanley
Renner wrote, The Chrysanthemums shows a strong capable woman kept from personal, social, and
sexual fulfillment by the prevailing conception of a woman s role in a world dominated by men
(Renner 306). Elisa Allen, the only female in The Chrysanthemums displays her sexual frustrations
throughout the short story by slipping in and out of masculine and feminine characteristics. The
Chrysanthemums begins by describing Elisa s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elisa then speaks about how she would be good at working in the orchards. Henry apparently feels
Elisa has spoken too much about masculine subjects because he resorts back to calling the
chrysanthemums simply flowers (221). This first scene between husband and wife sets the tone of the
entire story. Elisa s gestures and actions change as different words and topics are mentioned to her.
She feel s unimportant and inferior as a woman and strong enough to be a man. Soon after Henry
leaves to finish he work, the tinker is introduced into the story. Here is where Elisa s sexuality is
tested. Elisa s first reaction to the tinker is similar to that of a man s, for she resists giving him work
(Marcus 56). She show strong qualities as she tells the tinker she as no work for him. The tinker
begins to weaken Elisa, though, and eventually breaks her strong stance by using her pride and joy her
chrysanthemums. The tinker captures the beauty of the chrysanthemums in a poetic, feminine nature.
He describes them as a quick puff of colored smoke, which appeals to Elisa s feminine side. Suddenly,
Elisa begins to unveil her womanliness. She tears off her hat and shakes out her dark pretty hair
(Steinbeck 224). By being interested in Elisa s feminine flowers, the tinker makes Elisa comfortable
with her sexuality. Allowing her feminine nature to appear, Elisa becomes emotional vulnerable during
the business transaction involving her chrysanthemums. This is

Dual Objectives
James Manson Wood once said, Education today, more than ever before, must see clearly the dual
objectives: education for living and education for making a living. College education is what a person
makes it, it can help them achieve their hopes and dreams, or people can go because you have to to
make a good living. Texas Tech University, home of the Red Raiders, is repeatedly among the best
agricultural schools in the country, and it will help me achieve my goals of becoming a large animal
veterinarian in the future.
College education today can be very pricey, especially considering that you have to pay for
everything, even applications. To even send in an application and be considered for Texas Tech
University it cost 75 dollars. Meal plans, dorms, and parking can add up to thousands and thousands
of dollars a semester. Classes are really expensive too, the average cost is 38,016 dollars per year. This
may seem overwhelming, but fortunately there are ways to help you with the cost. You can get
scholarships in high school from many different organizations such as sports, or 4h and FFA. Also at

My Experience Of Swimming
Swimming demands nothing short of perfection.
I was ten when I first entered into a major Swimming competition, a stepping stone towards achieving
my dreams. Hours were poured into training and sacrifices made simply for a perfect race to the
podium. I had arrived 3 hours earlier, and to my dismay that the competition had been delayed. My
parents hid their apparent annoyance, in hope that the long wait would prove its worth, yet only to find
out it actually was not. The long wait took its toil on me and panic overcame me at the starting blocks.
In a field of 8 swimmers, the number 8 flashed brightly against my name, glistening tears welled up in
my eyes as failure washed over me.
I hated that part of Swimming. It washed away hours and years of work and sacrifices, dashed the big
dreams of a 10 year old, and failed high expectations laid bare for all to see. I hated Swimming for its

In that sense, perfectionism is like a drug, an insidious poison that infiltrates every part of me. A self
induced madness that one moment raises me to the pinnacle of elation, and the next drags me to the
darkest recesses of frustration and disappointment. Sometimes I think I would trade up almost
anything for one more hit of that pleasure, almost completely regardless of the consequence.
Everyone has a side of him or her that may ultimately lead to their downfall. Mine is, of no doubt, my
obsession with perfection. It is a question I face with on a daily basis: How far am I willing to go to
attain that perfection, to turn my ideals into reality?
At then, for most, the answer to the question is simple: As far as I want to. For me, the answer was
even simpler, though much complicated: All the way. Even if it means giving up the things that should
matter the most, I guess I was blinded looking through the lenses of

Analysis Of How Junk Food Can End Obesity
Elisabeth Wilgenburg Teresa Ishigaki English 3 15 September 2014 An Analysis of How Junk Food
can End Obesity David H. Freedman, a consulting editor for John Hopkins and author of several
books, writes in How Junk food can End Obesity about the dangers of ruling out Fast Food as a way to
decrease obesity in society. He argues that using nutrients to gauge the healthiness of a food is an
adequate way to increase health in society, and that most healthy foods contain a lot of unhealthy
ingredients that do not promote health. He also advocates small changes of about 50 100 calories in
meals to encourage people to stay on their diets and promote long term weight loss. He also points out
the severe monetary difference between health foods and fast food. He ultimately wants to promote
using the forum of food in society to decrease obesity in society, rather than making the large leap
from junk food to whole, natural foods. Freedman s argument is a claim of value, because he wants
people to change their view point from looking down on obese people for their dietary decisions and
focus on encouraging the food industry to cut back on calories in food. Near the end of the article, he
does support for government action, but it was more of an afterthought rather than a call for action. He
even provides evidence that taxation has not always worked; Denmark did manage to enact a fatty
food tax, but it was deemed a failure when consumers went next door into Germany and Sweden to

Multilingualism and European Commission
About 250 million years ago, Pangæa the supercontinent was split up and eventually settled on the
current continental configuration. As civilization flourished, the inhabitants developed their own
language and culture on each continent. However, trading and getting along with the neighboring
communities forced many groups to learn more than their mother tongue. This pragmatic use of
multilingualism is especially evident in Sub Saharan Africa. Today, the benefits of mastering more
than one language has influenced other continents such as Europe to incorporate multilingualism into
its society. Consequently, in the world s population, multilingual speakers outnumber monolingual

Consequently, multilingualism can unlock the full potential of the single market in terms of better jobs
and prosperity (European Commission). Given the appropriate environment, people tend to pick up a
new language easily at a young age. Multilingualism doesn t require complete fluency in another
language, or the ability to speak two unrelated languages. The benefits of multilingualism are so
stupendous that they extend outside the area of language. Children and elders learning a foreign
language have been demonstrated to be consistently better able to deal with distractions, like holding
two languages concurrently without allowing words and grammar slip from one to another
(Bialystok). Multilingual speakers also develop a greater vocabulary size over time (Kosmidis), a
markedly better language proficiency in, sensitivity to, and understanding of their mother tongue
(Johnson), and have a better ear for listening and sharper memories (Lapkin, Ratte). Furthermore,
evidence has shown that skill in several languages fosters creativity and innovation: multilingual
people are aware that problems can be tackled in different ways according to different linguistic and
cultural backgrounds (European Commission). They can use this ability to find new solutions.
Ultimately, United States needs to acknowledge that the social,

John Brown Hero
Is John Brown a hero or a murderer? While growing up in an ideal Christian family his parents, Owen
and Ruth Mills Brown, raised their children of eight to obey the teachings of the Bible. The Browns
would teach the importance of treating colored men with respect and to treat them just like regular
people. As John Brown father was a known abolitionist during his time, he would follow into his
father s footsteps and become the man that the world knows today. Many believe that John Brown
being how he was raised was brainwashed into becoming a strict believer of equality for all men or
that religion was a cover up for being a mass murderer. Historians like Robert E. McGlone would even

The government during this time did not consider John Brown a hero at all. He was a martyr, straight

Historians would characterize his actions as an act of terrorism. However slaves, former slaves and
abolitionist consider John Brown as a hero to them. John Brown should be considered a hero in all

Even though John Brown did not achieve that goal, he was able to pave the way for the abolishment of
slavery and equality for all citizens living in the United States of America. Frances Ellen Watkins

Identity Crisis In As I Lay Dying By Ernest Hemingway
Vardaman and Jake had their lives completely changed by an identity crisis that was caused by
personal tragedies. In the novel, As I lay Dying by William Faulkner, a young boy named Vardaman
experiences the death of his sick and fragile mother. Jake, from the novel, The Sun also Rises by
Ernest Hemingway also experiences a loss when his penis was shot off in the war. Jake and Vardaman
do not relatively experience the same events nor react in the same manner, but they both experience
the feeling of identity loss. A person who experiences a loss of identity often has a change in
personality and feels that they do not have a full understanding of who they are. The authors of these

Vardaman s messy and confusing thoughts reflect his struggle to fully comprehend what is happening
as his family embarks on a long journey to bury Addie. Jewel s mother is a horse. My mother is a fish.
Darl says that when we come to the water again I might see her and Dewey Dell said, She s in a box;
how could she have got out? (Faulkner 184). Vardaman isn t accustomed to understanding and
forming rational thoughts on his own, and when his mother dies he loses a substantial influencer in the
formation of his identity. Now he gets easily confused on simple things, such as how his mother got
out of the box if she is a fish. What makes this description of Vardaman s confused thoughts so
dynamic is Faulkner s usage of short sentences that are juxtaposed with long sentences. The short
sentences state what he thinks is right, but then the next sentence flows from what Darl said to what
Dewy Dell said, and by the end of that sentence he wonders how any of it pieces together. That mesh
of different ideas into one long sentence parallels with the mess of confusion about everything in
Vardaman s life. Along with complex sentence structure, Faulkner uses complicated diction to express
the character s emotions. You kilt my maw! (Faulkner 48). The slang is used by Faulkner to create the
effect that Vardaman s confused thoughts and emotions are directly going from him to the reader. One
of Faulkner s stylistic purposes of this is to make the reader intensely aware of the feelings and needs
of each family member ( Notable American Novelists 451). He does this by making it seem as though
the character wrote the words instead of Faulkner himself, which in a sense draws a deeper
understanding of the character s emotions for the reader. Faulkner s word choice and sentence
structure emphasizes the tone of Vardaman s experiences through his identity

the points are as follows : Tax considerations as mentioned above it is very important aspect when
merger happens because with it the capital structure of the organizations. For instance let us assume
that there are two companies, company A and company B. They are deciding the merge. Here
company A is very high turnover and also the profit is outstanding thus the tax obligations is very high
and the company B runs in the debt. Thus if these companies unite the tax liability of Company A will
reduce and thus money can be reduced for going out. Even in future the tax liability will be less then it
is in existing situation. Synergy This is also referring to the stakeholders and merging companies. The
origin of the synergy can be done by many reasons they are a) financial economies, b) two separate
management strength, c) operating economies d) by the union of two companies the market power
will increase and also the competition will decrease. Thus synergy and tax considerations are main and

  • 2. Moral And Spiritual Parables In The Bible In The Bible Parable 1 Throughout the Bible you ll discover many parables that tell a simple story of how Jesus illustrates moral and spiritual lessons. Parables give one or more instructional lessons or principles that can be an allegory. Parables also hold key words from Jesus readings that are meant to grasp people s attention and making sure they are hearing what is said. Jesus wants the listeners to focus on what is being said so that they will understand what He is teaching them. For example, He who has ears is a saying that is worded differently so that the reader s attention is grasped. It has been said that a parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning because of the hidden key words implemented in the text. Jesus frequently used parables as a way to illustrate profound and divine truths. Readers can break down parables and vigorously study them to better understand Jesus way of teaching, but mainly in order to be able to connect to Him through them. The disciples noticed the change in Jesus teaching and asked why he told a parable. In response Jesus said To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it has not been granted (Mathew 13:11). Its weird to think Jesus would leave people in question. Jesus would explain to the disciples that those who have, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. This was a common teaching in Judaism. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Comparing Poems Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori in latin means it is sweet and fitting to die for your country . These poems talk about the experiences soldiers endure during battle when people at the time believed that this was a patriotic duty for young men to go to war and risk their lives for their country. During this period, there were no televisions or newspapers that were able to uncover what was unraveling on the battlefield and trench, to warn these young patriotic men of the horrors that would await for them. Owen and Horace were once one of these young heroic men that experienced the physical, emotional and, mental pain of war. They used their story to uncover the truth about war and the cruelty they will experience if they do decide to join the waste of war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Essay about The Problem of God in Devils and The Brothers... The Problem of God in Devils and The Brothers Karamazov In contemplating the creation of the novel The Idiot, Dostoyevsky wrote in a letter to A.N. Maikov that he hoped to focus the work around a question with which I have been tormented, consciously or unconsciously all my life that is, the existence of God. 1 Dostoyevsky s personal struggle with the question of faith, and also his own experience with trying doubts as a believer, are manifested in the characters he writes. A large number of Dostoyevsky s books are written within the framework of a Christian doctrine, juxtaposing characterizations of believers and non believers, enforcing the ultimate good and reason that follow from possessing a faith. Dostoyevsky also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, these childhood associations seem to have strongly imprinted upon his mind, This book [the book of Job] Anna [his wife], it s strange is one of the first which made an impression on me in life, I was just then only a little boy. 5 While a large portion of Dostoyevsky s nurturing seems to have occurred in a Christian nest, he was also exposed to the harsh qualities possessed by man. His father was, though reverent, a drunk, and was later murdered by serfs on account of his inhumane treatment.6 This rougher sphere of his upbringing manifested itself in Dostoyevsky s early adulthood. He became involved in a group known as the Russian Utopian Socialists, influenced by Belinsky, a well known literary critic. The partnership formed by the two presumably shook Dostoyevsky s faith, as his revered mentor found that as a socialist, he had to destroy Christianity in the first place. He knew that the revolution must necessarily begin with atheism. 7 Later, though, Dostoyevsky broke off from the specific branch of the movement, forming the Durov circle. He was arrested for the circulation of a private letter full of insolent expressions against the Orthodox Church. 8 Evidently, he had forgotten his mother s teachings. While in prison (where the only book allowed was The Bible) it appears Dostoyevsky began to reemerge as a believer, writing in a letter to Mrs. N.D. Fonvizin: I believe that there ... The Revolution On Your Wrist Revolution on Your Wrist Less than thirty years ago, while Sly and the Family Stone were topping the pop music charts and President Richard Nixon was covertly scheming to win reelection, the wristwatch was being transformed from a mechanism of moving parts powered by an unwinding spring, into a battery driven electronic computer. Challenging centuries of analog timekeeping, battery driven quartz wristwatches hit the American marketplace in the early 1970s, though it seemed unlikely the expensive, new fangled timekeepers would sell. Marketed as the Next Big Thing in cutting edge technology, electronic watches, which were capable of far more precise timekeeping that mechanical ones, sold surprisingly well. Men did not begin wearing wristwatches until World War I. Even during the war they served a specific purpose: they were invaluable tools on the fighting front. The details of the history of the wristwatch are beginning to emerge as researchers at the National Museum of American History develop a new exhibition called On Time. Opening in about two years, On Time will explore the changing ways Americans have measured, used, and thought about time over the past 300 years. Featuring timekeeping devices and a surprising array of everyday objects, the exhibit will examine how we have come to rely on mechanical timekeepers more than environmental cues or our internal body rhythms. The history of Americans and their watches is complex. Watches aren t just functional everyday objects that provide the correct time. They are personal expressions of fashion and status. They are sometimes significant gifts treasured family heirlooms that link generations or keepsakes that mark important life moments such as weddings, anniversaries or graduations. Liberal Arts Education In Plato s The Allegory Of The Cave Patrick Awuah, the founder of Ashesi University, explains that the purpose of a liberal arts college is to educate free men and woman to become leaders. Ashei was the first non profit liberal arts college in West Africa. Patrick saw the need for a liberal arts education because he felt that the current leaders of Africa did not have the creative thinking skills necessary to fix the problems threatening Africa. He believed that a liberal arts education teaches students how to confront complex problems and create new and important ideas. The key trait of a liberal arts education is that it teaches students how to think creatively and allows them space to develop their own thinking skills, it creates a good balance between societal and scientific knowledge. new sentence/rephrase The Skidmore College Mission Statement emphasizes the importance of a never ending quest for knowledge . This outlines one key part of a liberal arts education, the understanding that knowledge is limitless and there will always be more questions to ask. • 10. Happiness And Emotions In The Poetry Of Blake And Rossetti At first read, Blake and Rossetti s fascination with the unity of conflicting emotion and their tendency to describe human experiences in contradictory terms might be perplexing. However, there is a reason behind what seems to be madness in the poetry of these writers. The poetry of Blake and Rossetti leads itself to the assertion that the human experience is teeming with both joy and agony. Whether someone lives their life in a state of joy or woe does not depend on whether their experience is positive or negative, because the human experience is both. Rather, someone s happiness or sadness through their life depends on whether they choose to orient their focus to the happiness and joy that exists in the universe or the negative pain that is just as abundant. Though happiness and sadness take many different forms in the poetry, in each form, they are as abundant as they are co dependent. Blake and Rossetti take radical steps to express how related the feelings of joy and woe are in time and space. In fact, in many places, their poetry subtly suggests that one emotion cannot occur without the other, and that no situation is complete without elements of both emotions. Blake s first unification of the two emotions occurs in his poem, Auguries of Innocence. Though sadness and joy are not the main topic of the piece, these two emotions appear multiple times through the poem. Interestingly, they are always referred to together, as Joy Woe . Never in the poem does Blake ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Terminal ill patients have been medically diagnosed of living six month or less. If a patient in Oregon wants to commit suicide there would be a 15 day waiting period between the doctor s agreement and the issuance of the prescription (The Times). PAS is not only legal in Oregon, but also in Washington, Vermont, New Mexico, and Montana. More than 70% of Californians support the legalization of PAS and no bill has been introduced since 2007. American culture has been emphasized that citizens of the United States have the rights and freedoms to make personal decisions. PAS needs to be legalized in California so terminally ill patients suffering from physical and emotional pain legally end their life. Despite religious groups disapproval of physician assisted suicide, some patients may suffer emotional distress due to their physical state. A reason many people may disagree on assisted suicide is that people s religious beliefs are against the practice. His rites of passage to society can be seen as a positive note to mortality, as it highlights the amenities of life. For example, his introduction to Shamhat and the enjoyment of sex for six nights in a row can be seen as positive amenity to humanity. This can be seen as a compare and contrast to his former animal state, where the wild beasts of the steppe shunned his person (I 189). The shunning is most likely due to the animals not understanding his sexual desires, as animals only mate for procreation. Moreover, the established relationship that Enkidu has with the gods can be seen as positive, mostly because he would not have had a deeper relationship with them in his wild state ... What are chaos and complexity theories? how might they help us do better sociology, or at least help us have more realistic understanding of what is possible in sociology? Chaos theory can be seen in the butterfly effect, where a small little butterfly in the States that flaps its wings and changes the weather somewhere far away like China. The butterfly effect shows that small changes can have massive impacts in the world. For most people it is hard for them to think that a butterfly has so much influence, there are many other examples. Chaos can be seen in this example, where someone forgets their car keys and runs back to get them, which results in them not hitting the deer on the road (Gleick 1987). Complexity theory states that structures are complex but that there is some form of general rules. Complexity theory is a part of chaos theory which is shown in the quote, chaos theory and its spin off, complexity theory, argue that relationships in complex systems, like organizations, are nonlinear, made of interconnections and branching choices that produce unintended consequences and render the universe unpredictable, (Tetenbaum 1998:1). • 21. Analysis Of The Film Amores Perros Amores Perros is characterized by a depiction of contemporary urban life dominated by violence, social decay and the corruption of both traditional and modern morality and political values. Yet, according to some critics, the film suggests the possibility of human and social redemption. Discuss. Amore Perros is a film about society where life is dominated by pain, violence, social decay and corruption. In this scenario love is the only tool through which the characters can find redemption and hope for a better future. In this essay, I will discuss how the social and human redemption is represented in the film. I will focus predominantly on the character of El Chivo: a hit man who left his family to change the world. In my opinion, only El Chivo is able to wake himself up and do something to change his future and redeem himself. Valeria and Octavio on the other hand are not able to learn a lesson and change their lives, in fact at the end of the film they regress instead of move on. (moving on). El Chivo achieves social redemption by giving up his life as a hit man. The moment when he loses all his dogs because of Cofi is crucial in his process of changing. The loss makes him realise who he is and what is the true meaning of life. After losing his dogs he kidnaps the person he was supposed to kill and the one who paid him to carry out the hit. Then he ties them up and he leaves them alone with a gun (Jose Arroyo, Sight and Sound, 2001). By doing this he leaves his past and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. King Congo King Analysis King Leopold set his focus on the Congo because he wanted to rule a colony of his own, something bigger than just little old Belgium, and the Congo provided that. It had waterways that connected the land, as well as people that he could use as slaves. A book that he had read titled Java, or How to Manage a Colony had sparked Leopold s interest for a colony of his own (Hochschild, p. 37). According to the quote, In the mid 1870s, sub Saharan Africa was a logical place for an aspiring colonialist to look...about 80% of the entire land area of Africa was still under indigenous rulers. It was ripe for conquest or, as Leopold was now learning to say, for protection (Hochschild, p. 42), this land was an opportunity for Leopold to finally build a colony; especially after Stanley had found the Congo River during an expedition. Leopold s purpose was shaped by a desire not only for money but for power (Hochschild, p. 39). The Congo s resources were rubber and ivory, ivory was made into false teeth, or piano pieces, among other things and this produced a lot of profits once sold. However, the profits for rubber were much higher than that of ivory. The land itself provides the power that Leopold wanted. Leopold was successful in the sense that he did become the ruler of the Congo, he did gain profits out it, he did have slaves that built railways, as well as an army made majority of its own people, the natives. • 32. Elisa Confused Essay Elisa Confused Like many short stories, John Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums deceives most readers by appearing to be a simple short story. The Chrysanthemums, which only occupies about eight pages in textbooks, captures the emotional pain of a woman trying to live in the 1930 s. As critic Stanley Renner wrote, The Chrysanthemums shows a strong capable woman kept from personal, social, and sexual fulfillment by the prevailing conception of a woman s role in a world dominated by men (Renner 306). Elisa Allen, the only female in The Chrysanthemums displays her sexual frustrations throughout the short story by slipping in and out of masculine and feminine characteristics. Henry apparently feels Elisa has spoken too much about masculine subjects because he resorts back to calling the chrysanthemums simply flowers (221). This first scene between husband and wife sets the tone of the entire story. Elisa s gestures and actions change as different words and topics are mentioned to her. She feel s unimportant and inferior as a woman and strong enough to be a man. Soon after Henry leaves to finish he work, the tinker is introduced into the story. Here is where Elisa s sexuality is tested. Elisa s first reaction to the tinker is similar to that of a man s, for she resists giving him work (Marcus 56). She show strong qualities as she tells the tinker she as no work for him. The tinker begins to weaken Elisa, though, and eventually breaks her strong stance by using her pride and joy her chrysanthemums. The tinker captures the beauty of the chrysanthemums in a poetic, feminine nature. He describes them as a quick puff of colored smoke, which appeals to Elisa s feminine side. Suddenly, Elisa begins to unveil her womanliness. She tears off her hat and shakes out her dark pretty hair (Steinbeck 224). By being interested in Elisa s feminine flowers, the tinker makes Elisa comfortable with her sexuality. College education is what a person makes it, it can help them achieve their hopes and dreams, or people can go because you have to to make a good living. Texas Tech University, home of the Red Raiders, is repeatedly among the best agricultural schools in the country, and it will help me achieve my goals of becoming a large animal veterinarian in the future. • 34. My Experience Of Swimming Swimming demands nothing short of perfection. I was ten when I first entered into a major Swimming competition, a stepping stone towards achieving my dreams. Hours were poured into training and sacrifices made simply for a perfect race to the podium. I had arrived 3 hours earlier, and to my dismay that the competition had been delayed. My parents hid their apparent annoyance, in hope that the long wait would prove its worth, yet only to find out it actually was not. The long wait took its toil on me and panic overcame me at the starting blocks. In a field of 8 swimmers, the number 8 flashed brightly against my name, glistening tears welled up in my eyes as failure washed over me. I hated that part of Swimming. • 35. Analysis Of How Junk Food Can End Obesity Elisabeth Wilgenburg Teresa Ishigaki English 3 15 September 2014 An Analysis of How Junk Food can End Obesity David H. Freedman, a consulting editor for John Hopkins and author of several books, writes in How Junk food can End Obesity about the dangers of ruling out Fast Food as a way to decrease obesity in society. He argues that using nutrients to gauge the healthiness of a food is an adequate way to increase health in society, and that most healthy foods contain a lot of unhealthy ingredients that do not promote health. He also advocates small changes of about 50 100 calories in meals to encourage people to stay on their diets and promote long term weight loss. He also points out the severe monetary difference between health foods and fast food. He ultimately wants to promote using the forum of food in society to decrease obesity in society, rather than making the large leap from junk food to whole, natural foods. Freedman s argument is a claim of value, because he wants people to change their view point from looking down on obese people for their dietary decisions and focus on encouraging the food industry to cut back on calories in food. Near the end of the article, he does support for government action, but it was more of an afterthought rather than a call for action. He even provides evidence that taxation has not always worked; Denmark did manage to enact a fatty food tax, but it was deemed a failure when consumers went next door into Germany and Sweden to ... The benefits of multilingualism are so stupendous that they extend outside the area of language. Children and elders learning a foreign language have been demonstrated to be consistently better able to deal with distractions, like holding two languages concurrently without allowing words and grammar slip from one to another (Bialystok). Multilingual speakers also develop a greater vocabulary size over time (Kosmidis), a markedly better language proficiency in, sensitivity to, and understanding of their mother tongue (Johnson), and have a better ear for listening and sharper memories (Lapkin, Ratte). Furthermore, evidence has shown that skill in several languages fosters creativity and innovation: multilingual people are aware that problems can be tackled in different ways according to different linguistic and cultural backgrounds (European Commission). My mother is a fish. Darl says that when we come to the water again I might see her and Dewey Dell said, She s in a box; how could she have got out? (Faulkner 184). Vardaman isn t accustomed to understanding and forming rational thoughts on his own, and when his mother dies he loses a substantial influencer in the formation of his identity. Now he gets easily confused on simple things, such as how his mother got out of the box if she is a fish. What makes this description of Vardaman s confused thoughts so dynamic is Faulkner s usage of short sentences that are juxtaposed with long sentences. The short sentences state what he thinks is right, but then the next sentence flows from what Darl said to what Dewy Dell said, and by the end of that sentence he wonders how any of it pieces together. That mesh of different ideas into one long sentence parallels with the mess of confusion about everything in Vardaman s life. Along with complex sentence structure, Faulkner uses complicated diction to express the character s emotions. You kilt my maw! (Faulkner 48). The slang is used by Faulkner to create the effect that Vardaman s confused thoughts and emotions are directly going from him to the reader. One of Faulkner s stylistic purposes of this is to make the reader intensely aware of the feelings and needs of each family member ( Notable American Novelists 451). He does this by making it seem as though the character wrote the words instead of Faulkner himself, which in a sense draws a deeper understanding of the character s emotions for the reader. Faulkner s word choice and sentence structure emphasizes the tone of Vardaman s experiences through his identity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
