Gus Van Sant s Elephant
Van Sant s film represents the reality of high school, focusing on the look of its beauty, characters,
while also ignoring the basic grime inherent on most campuses. Van Sant takes pride in portraying a
valuable image. What s in the room really touches you if it is closely examined. The hallways and the
fields of the school are in pristine condition, staying abnormally clean, almost too clean for a school.
Despite this seeming glorification of the building, the hallways are kept as a constant secondary to the
sharply focused characters the camera constantly follows. This really takes the focus away from the
bare walls and empty hallways and places it directly on the students. The film isn t about the location
that it occurred, but more about the people that it happened to. The focus is on the students of the film,
both figuratively and literally. The camera appears to look like it s never stop moving. It does halt for
brief pauses that seem to relax the viewer. There is some frustration upon watching because you can t
collect all the data you need to deconstruct the film. However the scenes do go go back and forth with
each other sometimes. At one point you may notice that you re following a student and it will cut into
the perspective of another student whom will pass by the student that was originally being followed.
This sort of filming can cause confusion but employs a nice twist to the film. The plot doesn t post the
events in chronological order. When a

Examples Of Co-Operative Principle
2.2 Co operative Principle In 1967, H. Paul Grice, in his William James Lectures at Harvard
University, theorized a set of rules that communicators should follow while communicating. Grice
labels these set of rules as Co operative Principle. He formulates theory of co operation in the
following way. For Grice, talk exchanges are continuous and the participants, to some extent, make co
operative efforts so that the purpose of exchange is achieved. The purpose of exchange can be
formulated before it takes place or it may change during conversation. For conversation to be
successful participants are expected to follow the general principle of conversation i.e. co operative
principle. Grice further categorizes co operative principle into its maxims ... Show more content on

His response gives right amount of information following maxim of quantity, the response for which
B has necessary evidence following maxim of quality, B s response directly correspond to A s question
following maxim of relation, and the response is also given in such a way that it is understood
effectively and efficiently following maxim of manner. 2.2.2 Observance and Violation of the Co
operative Principle Generally interlocutors try to be co operative while communicating. The kind of
expression expressed by speaker should be replied verbally or non verbally. The neutral verbal or non
verbal behaviour i.e. no reply is considered as non co operative behaviour. An offer should be
accepted or diplomatically rejected; a question should be answered. Grice calls violation of these
maxims of co operative principles as flouting of maxims. Observance and violation of maxims of co
operative principles can be studied with following examples. In the above example maxim of quantity
has been observed because it follows all the sub maxims of quantity. Speaker B s reply to A s question
is as informative as is required. It doesn t contribute more information than necessary. The same
question with a different reply is an example of violation of maxim of

Greek Mythology and Its Effects on Civilization
Greek religion encompasses the collection of beliefs and rituals practiced in ancient Greece in the
form of both popular public religion and cult practices. Many Greeks recognized the major gods and
goddesses, such as Zeus, Poseidon, Hades and many others through philosophies such as Stoicism.
The religious practices of the Greeks extended beyond mainland Greece to the islands and costs of
Ionia in Asia Minor to Sicily and southern Italy, and scattered Greek colonies in the Western
Mediterranean. Greek religion was tempered by Etruscan cult and belief to form much of the later
Ancient Roman religion.
Greek religion had an extensive mythology. It consisted largely of stories of the gods and how they

The story of Achilles is from Greek mythology: his heel was said to be the only place on his body
where he was susceptible to attack; now known as someone s achilles heel, it is derived from the
following story:
...when Achilles was a baby, it was foretold that he would die in battle from an arrow in the foot. To
prevent his death, his mother Thetis took Achilles to the River Styx which was supposed to offer
powers of invincibility and dipped his body into the water...[holding] Achilles by the heel...[which]
was not washed over by the water of the magical river.
The Olympic games which are held every four years come from the Greek practice of the same event.
The Olympic Games reached their zenith in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, but then gradually declined
in importance as the Romans gained power and influence in Greece. ...[it is thought to have ended
approximately in] 393 AD, when the emperor Theodosius I declared that all pagan cults and practices
be eliminated...After the demise of the Olympics, they were not held again until the late 19th

My Loving Daughter Connie Is A Beacon Of Light
My loving daughter Connie was a beacon of light in our lives. She was a caring, compassionate and
kind girl with so much love to give. She was taken from us too early, and had her whole life ahead of
her. Connie s sickness was terrible and god took her pain away and brought her to heaven. She was
loved by everyone she met and always could brighten up someone s day with her beautiful smile.
Connie was so intelligent and knew so many things. Her life was cut too short, but we didn t deserve
someone like Connie, and she belongs in the kingdom of god. She may be gone, but she is still my
little girl. Connie loved her brothers both so much as if they were her own children, and I know that
they loved her unconditionally back. Kip, Francis and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her skin was slightly translucent and the glow of life she once had was gone. a tear rolled down my
cheek as a stepped down from the lectern. Kip looked at me with contempt, like I didn t care about my
own daughter. I made her have that abortion because I did care about her. he was too young to
understand those things; he was just grieving. Francis seemed to be genuinely sad about his sister, but
they never did have that same relationship as her and Kip did. Francis was away at school most of the
time so it was understandable. I saw through the glass window that there was a young man running up
to the doorway, he was wearing army greens. I did not want Jack Husting, the cause of my daughter s
death, to be attending her funeral. His childish blonde hair was waving around frantically as he poked
his head through each window trying to see inside. he yelled out to me. Mrs Westaway, please let me
see her, please I beg you! . there was no way that boy was getting in. I lowered my gaze to the floor,
and walked patiently back to where I was previously seated. Mrs Westaway, Kip!!
Kip looked up at Jack with a look of sadness, and then looked over at me. He may not be allowed in,
Kip. I said quietly.
Jacks voice was cracking as he kept begging to be let in. he knocked his fists on the door and the
walls. Kip looked at me once again and then picked himself up off of his seat. his eyes were
bloodshot.

Case Study Of Cellulitis
outcome measured the proportion of patients that had a repeat of cellulitis during the drug phase and
follow up phase (Thomas et al., 2013).
The results of this experiment showed some interesting information. In the end 136 patients were put
into the penicillin group and 138 patients were put into the placebo group. From these patients 15
(5%) took back consent or couldn t be found, 11 died (4%) and 206 (75%) were put into a secondary
care (Thomas et al., 2013). In total 247 (90%) of the patients did the minimum of 18 months of follow

respectively twice daily (Berende et al., 2016). And the other patients got placebos twice daily
(Berende et al., 2016). Everyone was blindly assigned.
At the end of the study 205 patients (73.2%) reported a minimum of one adverse effect, like diarrhea

To measure results the researchers used a 36 question questionnaire at the beginning at the end of the
treatment of the 14 weeks, at 26 weeks, at 40 weeks, and finally 52 weeks after treatment (Berende et

Abortion As A Medical Or Surgical Procedure
Abortion is described as a medical or surgical procedure to remove a fetus and the placenta from a
woman s uterus by a trained healthcare worker (Nih.gov.2014). After hearing a case named Roe vs.
Wade the Supreme Court, abortion was made legal in the United States in 1973. For a very long time,
I was against abortion due to lack of information and exposure to other cultures. Because I grow up in
a very religious household, the word abortion was definitely not part of the vocabulary. My parents
taught me to believe that abortion was a sin against God and that removing a pregnancy equals to
committing a murder. However, since my move to the United States I learned that in life, it is not
always black or white; therefore my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people have different views about abortion and they feel strongly about the debate. I believe
that everyone views are individual and mostly feel motivated because of religious beliefs or personal
experiences. Prior to watching the videos, I did not realize how much people struggle to make
abortion legal in the United States. However I did know about illegal abortions because they are
frequently done in West Africa where I grew up. Moreover the video showed when times women were
having pregnancies removed against the law. Nonetheless women who decided not to carry an
unwanted pregnancy due to one reason or other have found ways to have an abortion. Being in
desperate situations basically made them resort to dangerous and sometimes deadly methods. Many of
these women had to be hospitalized for complications or lost their lives too ashamed to seek for help
or for fear of criminal charges. Before being legalized, it was estimated that over a million of illegal
abortions was done and over a thousand of women have died due to complications and infections.
(Castle .M. A 2011). The things that impressed me the most in the video are the fact that the country
saw was the rise of the women movement to fight against the inequalities and unfair treatments toward
them. According to video, young activist marched the streets, organized public speeches to demand
the legal right to abortion in many States. In addition, the things that I did not agree with

Immatology Assignment

Question: A newly emerged virus has infected a previously naïve (uninfected) individual. Please
describe all the possible adaptive immune response to this uncharacterized virus
Introduction:
The adaptive immune response is the response of antigen specific lymphocytes to antigen, it functions
through a series of steps aimed at limiting or destroying a particular antigen. T and B cells primarily
mediate the responses of the adaptive immune system as they obtain the characteristics of specificity
and memory. There are two classes of adaptive immune response; humoral immune response and cell
mediated or antibody immune response. In order for the adaptive immune response to know when to
respond, how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their two primary jobs are to ensure antibody production against the appropriate target antigen occurs
and there is presentation of antigen to T cells and signals for T cell activation are provided. B cells
provide protection of the host by producing antibodies that identify and neutralize foreign objects like
viruses. These B cells then differentiate into plasma cells and memory cells. Plasma cells are
terminally differentiated B cells that remain committed to the continuous production and secretion of
antibodies. Each plasma will synthesise and secret only one type of antibody. Memory B cells are long
lived B cells that have specialised to remembering the type of substances that the immune system has
seen before, they are primed for rapid response to repeated exposure of the antigen. Memory B cells
are generated in the lymphoid tissue and migrate to the lymph nodes and reside in the ready mode for
activation in order to quickly recognise and attack any returning virus. T cells attack cells that have
become infected by viruses, there are two types of T cells the T helper cell ad the cytotoxic T cell. T
helper cells do not attack infected cells directly, instead they release chemical messengers known as
cytokines that signal differentiation, growth and action of other immune cells. Cytotoxic T cells go
around in the body looking for and wanting to destroy pathogenic cells directly. Cytotoxic T cells
attach to the compromised cell and release chemical factors that are able to kill their targets by
programming then to undergo apoptosis. * Dendritic

Worm Lab Report
Title: The Effect of Nicotine on the Heart Rate of the Lumbriculus Variegatus
Introduction:
Background This lab is being done to demonstrate the effects of stimulants on the circulatory system
of blackworms. In this lab, the stimulant we have chosen to use is Nicotine. A stimulant is an agent
that causes increased activity, especially in the nervous or cardiovascular systems. In this lab, we will
put blackworms into the Nicotine to look at the differences in pulse rates when compared to a control.
The proper name for blackworms is Lumbriculus Variegatus, they are freshwater worms most
commonly found in North America and Europe. The blood in blackworms circulates from the dorsal
blood vessel toward the head through a series of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

4 | 13 | 5 | 14 | 6 | 12 | 7 | 15 | 8 | 15 | 9 | 22 |
Mean 15.4, Median 15
Table 1 shows the heart rates of worms in the control, their average heart rate is at 10.7 pulse/min.
Table 2 shows the worms in the 2.5mL of Nicotine which proved to be too strong. Table 3 shows the
heart rates of worms in the diluted solution of 2.5mL Nicotine and 1mL H2O. Table 3 shows that the
heart rate of worms is faster in the nicotine with the average pulse rate at 15.5 pulse/min.
This table shows the data for the 15 control worms in water and then the same 15 in Nicotine. There
are not 15 worms in the nicotine solution because our first solution was too strong and 6 of the worms
died. The solution being used in this graph is 2.5 mL of Nicotine and 1 mL H20. This graph shows that
the pulse rates of worms in Nicotine tend to be higher than that of the worms in water. This data
proves the idea that stimulants raise heart rate.

The Impact Of Malnutrition On Guatemala And Its Effects On...
The Impact of Malnutrition in Guatemala
Most children in Guatemala at the age of five begin to suffer from malnourishment while in other
countries such as the U.S. children suffer from obesity. In Guatemala, half of all the children under the
age of 5 suffer from chronic malnourishment. It is the largest economy in Central America and also
the most populous country in the region. Even so, many members of Guatemala remain minimally
active in the economy and live in poverty (Guatemala s government 1). Guatemala is rich in
agricultural yet they don t feed their own people.
According to the World Food Programme in 2009 Guatemala ranked 133 out of 187 countries in the
Human Development Index of 2012 (1). The HDI is a system used to rank countries on their overall
achievements economically and socially. Guatemala faces a food insecurity crisis due to droughts. The
global economic crisis has reduced exports, foreign investments, tourism revenues and access to credit
thereby increasing the government s budget deficit and unemployment. The rise in the price of
agricultural inputs has reduced the availability of subsidized fertilizers (1). Farmers are affected but
not as much as families. Due to the crisis families are restricted to the access of food. In comparison to
the United States families are less likely to face these crisis because they receive help from Welfare,
Medicaid and Medicare.
Feed the Future reports that Guatemala has tremendous agricultural production, leading

There are many Types of Security
Back to the question at hand, when is too much security too much? The turning point is different for
each situation. A home computer can have too much security when the user installs two separate
security programs. These programs then end up fighting each other and not protecting the computer at
all. For a business it can be when the company begins to lose money by having less time to be
productive. A simple example would be when a company installs an auto log off feature that
terminates a user s session after they do not do any actions for ten minutes. After a month of testing
the new feature the employees report that they feel as though they are spending as much time logging
in as they are doing any work. To help decide when a system has too much security can easily be
solved when dealing with obvious issues, but if the task becomes harder the issue can be solved in a
formulaic fashion. In the study An Analytical Security Model for Existing Software Systems by Ayaz
Isazadeh and a few other researchers, over the course of four years, developed a formula for how
much security would be needed per architectural system. This type of study helps more than simple
businesses, governments everywhere take the information into consideration when creating or
changing their system. For example, the U.S. government is wrote about in the article Defending
America in Cyberspace where it is said that the government continues to improve its ability to

Sokolow begins the article by introducing us to Leo Tolstoy, and Russian who is not pleased with the
idea of art at the time. He explains how Tolstoy went back to his adolescent learnings and used the
eighteenth century for his inspiration. He was able to do this because growing up he spent his summer
reading eighteenth century writings like Goldsmith and Sterne, but is was those of Benjamin Franklin
that inspired him the most. Sokolow mentions how Franklin was popular in Russia during his time, so
it makes since that Tolstoy had easy access to his works. Tolstoy read Franklin s works during his

Mandrill Vs Gibbon Essay
Introduction
There are many similarities and differences in primate species. The ones I chose to focus on today was
the Philippine tarsier, Mandrill and the gibbon. What made me choose these non human primates so
interesting was the uniqueness and appearance of each primate. I plan to explain the similarities of
their teeth structure and purposes and the similarities of their diet and feeding and also the differences
of their behaviors. Mandrills are extremely colorful, perhaps more so than any other mammal. They
also have extremely long canine teeth that can be used for self defense though baring them is typically
a friendly gesture among mandrills. These are primarily terrestrial monkeys, and they move with long
arms to move on the ground for fruits, roots, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and like to feed on the same resources such as leaves, and insects. The Philippine tarsier share many
similarities with the Gibbon they are both arboreal which means they spend most of their time in the
trees. And they both have unique functions of their bodies which helps them to maneuver from tree to
tree the Philippine tarsier tibia and fibula are fused in their lower portions, acting as a shock absorber.
This is considered a primitive trait, which can normally be seen in quadrupeds. The lower limbs are
twice the length of its trunk. The Gibbons have shoulder flexors, extensors, rotator muscles and elbow

The Role Of Female Circumcision In Western Societies
In Western Societies, such as the United States, women have become more independent both
politically and financially. Yet, in third world countries and patriarchal societies, it is not uncommon to
see women hold subservient roles to men. Many women still follow traditions of the past within their
cultures, such as, female genital mutilation (FGM) or female circumcision a painful surgical procedure
to remove part of the clitoris (or clitoral hood) to suppress female sexuality. Female circumcision is
banned in the United States, as the World Health Organization considers the procedure a violation of
human rights for women and girls ( FGM in the United States ). In a recent case, two physicians and
the wife of one of the doctors have been criminally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first glance, the Malbim would seem to object to the government s ban to FGM. The Malbim
argues that individual freedoms are greater than societal needs. Each individual must pursue his/her
goal of fulfilling the divine purpose, the elevation of the physical through the spiritual. This can be
done through the pursuit of self development and self perfection via Torah observance. If this is the
case, society, according to the Malbim, should help individuals reach moral perfection by giving
support and freedom to individuals. The role of government is to create an environment free from
impediments as much as possible and give the individual the maximum opportunity to pursue good
(Sicker and TanenbaumCHAT 244 245). However, in this case, the doctors are not reaching moral
perfection, as they are violating the Jewish law of bodily mutilation. From a Jewish perspective, these
doctors are straying from self perfection, as this procedure is impeding on the divine purpose. The
Malbim would argue that the government should bring these doctors a step closer to moral perfection,
by banning the practice of FGM on girls. This way, the government would be fulfilling its role of
creating an environment where individuals would be able to reach moral perfection on their own.
Although the government should interfere as little as possible, in the same time,

My Interview with a Jewish Friend Essay examples

been interested in this religion and was ready to learn more. One of the three great monotheistic world
religions, Judaism began as the faith of the ancient Hebrews, and its sacred text is the Hebrew Bible,
particularly the Torah. Fundamental to Judaism is the belief that the people of Israel are God s chosen
people, who must serve as a light for other nations. God made a covenant first with Abraham, then
renewed it with Isaac, Jacob, and Moses. The worship of Yahweh (God) was centered in Jerusalem
from the time of David.

3. What different methods of worship does your religion practice?
Answer: Traditionally, Jews use certain rituals on a daily basis, too. Some of these are: putting on the
Tallit (a prayer shawl) and Tefillin (phylacteries, which are small leather boxes containing verses from
the Bible that remind Jews of their duties one worn on the forehead and one on the arm), praying three
times a day, and keeping the dietary laws called Kashrut.
4. Is there a particular day you practice these methods of worship?
Answer: Yes of course. Jews have long revered Shabbat, the Sabbath, as a taste of the world to come,
a time of rest, of peace, and of contentment. From sundown on Friday night until sundown on
Saturday night, observant Jews set aside time to pray and study a day to refrain from work and
everyday cares.

6. What are the important holidays and traditions of this religion?
Answer: Yes a few are: the high holy days, sukkot, hannukkah, pesach, the omer period, Shavuot, and

Employment Tribunals In Australia
In order to properly address the matter of an employee who is suspected of coming into work under
the influence of illegal drugs, we must ensure that we follow the businesses disciplinary processes and

What Is Unnatural Essay
For many years Human beings have been trying to define what is natural, and what is not. And we are
getting to the point, to where unnatural is becoming more natural thanks to modern science and
medicine. For instance, If a man wants to become a woman, all they have to do is go to a doctor and
ask them to snip snip if you will. And as long as that person has the money and the medical

shunning them for who they choose to be, we love on them, we develop mature relationship with
them, and we show them the true love of God. One that is non judgmental, nor condemning. But one
of understanding and loving. And show that we are not your typical bible thumpers, but that we
understand what they are feeling, though we may not agree with it, we show that we accept them for
who they are. See, we are supposed to be a light to the lost. How are we being that if we are constantly
shunning people from our churches, and lives, for being what they chose to be. Like I said, we do not
have to agree with their lifestyle, but we sure can love them through it, and eventually show them a
better way.

Importantly, let s not overlook the effects of salmon population declines on the indigenous peoples of
California. Tribes such as the Karuk, Yurok, Wiyot and the Hoopa, to name just a few, have depended
on salmon as their main food source for centuries. Salmon was not just food, but central to their
religion, their diet, and their overall way of life. Salmon are the cornerstone of their culture (Harling,
2006). The loss of this abundant natural resource must be seen not only as degrading the health of the
river ecosystem, but also as severely impacting the health of the tribes. Until the early 1850 s
California s rivers flowed freely to the Pacific Ocean. The emergence of dams started with small
earthen dams used to divert water for mining and irrigation purposes. The diverted water used for
hydraulic mining would prove to be the beginning of a long era of environmental degradation of
California s river ecosystems. With the turn of the century came a population boom and the rapid
development of urban centers and an increased demand for water. With the end of the gold rush,
agriculture quickly became the main player in California s economy. This too, raised the demand for
water and dams were being built at a staggering pace. The introduction of huge hydropower dams
proved to be the nail in the coffin for anadromous fish because little or no heed was paid to the impact
of dams on the state s watersheds. Today California has over fourteen hundred dams responsible for

The Code Switching Language Teaching
The code switching language taught me a new way to reach my future students on a grammatical level
in any part of the state I choose to teach in. Code switching is teaching that informal and formal
language is neither incorrect nor correct but which form is appropriate for the situation that the student

focusing on the students ability to write a correct sentence. While learning about code switching the
process reminded me of an urban slang dictionary being used. A code switching lesson consists of four

Learning about dialects was another interesting topic we discussed in class, the topic made me really
think deep about what kind of dialect I use in everyday life. Dialects are a specific variation of a
language in a particular region or ethic group with individualized phonological features to wide range
of groups. A large part of decoding dialects is the understanding of the International Phonetic
Alphabet, phonology, and phonemes used in the different areas you might be teaching in. Phonology is
the study of sound and phonemes is the smallest unit of sound both are key to use and listen for when
in a new region of the country. The International Phonetic Alphabet represents the sounds letters make
for a spoken language and when written the word reads as a certain dialect. Lexical features of dialects
are the preferred terms of words used in certain dialects with different synonyms used by other
dialects. Learning about dialects also taught me how people code switch from home to public settings.
I speak a Northern Jersey with a small amount of classic southern mixed into my dialect. Allowing me
to understand multiple dialects including Standard English. My stronger northern accent may cause
me teaching in areas with a strong southern accent to be a little bit of a struggle with my students and
myself.

‘the Major Uk Parties Agree More over Europe Than They...
The major UK parties agree more over Europe than they disagree. Discuss Throughout the history of
European integration, the major UK parties have debated on all different aspects of Europe and the
impacts of membership on Britain itself. From both these debates and party policies, it is clear to see
that whilst there is generally a consensus over Europe, some issues have been a cause of disagreement
among the major parties. In this essay I will analyse the policies and actions of the major UK parties
that concern the EU and be able to conclude to what extent they agree over Europe. The most obvious
example of agreement between the three major UK parties is that they all favour UK membership of

The Conservatives, on the other hand, have been against joining the Eurozone ever since negotiating
an opt out from the part of the Maastricht Treaty that would have required the UK to adopt the euro.
They remain against the joining the euro, with David Cameron saying in his recent speech on Europe
that Britain is not in the single currency, and we re not going to be . One common criticism of the EU
by all three major parties has been the lack of democracy within the EU institutions. Even the pro
European Liberal Democrats have said that the certain parts of the EU need to be reformed. One of the
main reforms supported by the major parties is the reform of the EU budget to get better value for
money, as they believe that the UK pays too much into the budget and does not get as much out of it
as it pays in. A policy that the all parties wish to reform is the Common Agricultural Policy. The CAP
takes up 32% of the EU s budget, but only supports a small minority of EU businesses. They believe
that the CAP makes food more expensive in the EU than it needs to be, and that it increases poverty in
poor countries by competing unfairly with local farmers. The major parties also support reform of the
Common Fisheries Policy, with all three voting in favour of reform of the CFP in the European
Parliament in February 2013. The Liberal Democrats and

Originally used to help survive the harshest of winters, snow mobiles have adapted to become an
extremely popular winter activity. They can be found in many countries, and have many different uses
including, but not limited to, outdoor work, tourism, hunting, and travel. Snow mobiles have a short
history, are very popular today, and have very few effects on the environment. The original snow
mobile was created in 1908 in the town of Waterville, Maine. It looked like a tiny locomotive and was
called the Lombard Log Hauler. A year later O. C. Johnson created the first machine that actually

The Ring Of The Phone Momentarily Halted The Ever Present...
The ring of the phone momentarily halted the ever present tears. Hello, I said softly, Oh, hi. It had
been at least a year since I had last spoken with my father and I didn t quite know what to say. Trying
to keep the crack out of my voice I told him of the impending divorce. I love you, he said. I never
knew, I replied. I could hear the tears falling compassionately on the other end of the phone. I m sorry,
I said. I didn t mean to hurt you. I just never knew you loved me. Tears prevented either of us from
speaking. Then we shared a little more and hung up. A particular sadness circled but I didn t want to
reflect on it at the time. Throughout his life, in his own way, my dad did love me. Gone during the

The Politics behind Dante’s Inferno
The Divine Comedy is much more than an epic poem depicting a man s interpretation of Heaven,
Hell, and Purgatory. Written by Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, the Divine Comedy frequently alludes to
the political turmoil that was prevalent throughout 14th century Italy, specifically, the city of Florence.
During this period of Italian history, there was a lack of a stable government and a power struggle
between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor. This paper will analyze the political aspects within
the Divine Comedy and its connection to religion, focusing specifically on the Inferno. During Dante s

Mr. McKenzie was immediately uncomfortable with the policy of the hotel. In his line of business, he
knew that a successful company would not follow this procedure, when booking a customer s
reservation.
Our second question was Did the Regal Carnation always misrepresent itself on the website and was
this intentional. Looking at the case, it states that the tourism industry was in its maturity state by
2007. During this time hotels were running elaborate campaigns to make their hotels and business
stand out. But with the declining pool of tourists, there was less profit to be made and as a result less
money to reinvest into the hotel. It is no surprise then; that given time and diminished incentive to
reinvest, that the website told a different story than reality. If the McKenzie s would have researched a
little more, followed up on their gut intuitions about the Regal Carnation, and considered how it fits in
with Guam s overall economy and history perhaps they would have realized the fallacy of deciding
upon value based solely on a website.
It is commonly believed that each product in business goes through what is called a product life cycle.
It can typically be divided into four distinctive categories. Simply put, Introduction, Growth, Maturity
and Decline are the four names that describe the different sections. Guam s tourism industry is
currently going through the Decline stage of the product life cycle.

Analysis of Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes Essay
Dream Deferred
A dream is a goal in life, not just dreams experienced during sleep. Most people use their dreams as a
way of setting future goals for themselves. Dreams can help to assist people in getting further in life
because it becomes a personal accomplishment. Langston Hughes s poem Dream Deferred is speaks
about what happens to dreams when they are put on hold. The poem leaves it up to the reader to
decide what dream is being questioned.
In the opening of the poem the speaker uses a visual image that is also a simile to compare a dream
deferred to a raisin. Does it dry up/ like a raisin in the sun? The simile in the question is comparing a
dream deferred to raisin in the sun. Like a raisin, a dream deferred shrivels up ... Show more content

As you read further into the poem it allows you to develop a clearer understanding of what Hughes is
trying to express in the poem. It is stated that the dream may crust and sugar over like a syrupy
sweet? He is stating that by not using or putting the dream into use had formed into crust, which is that
hard material that is no longer useful because it is no longer pliable. The dream forced to sit idle
hardens into an unusable substance of thoughts that have separated themselves from the goals and
formed idle destructive thoughts that are crusted over with despair, doubt, anger, and hatred.
Langston Hughes s poem Dream Deferred is basically about what happens to dreams when they are
put on hold. Hughes probably intended for the poem to focus on the dreams of African American in
particular. However, it is just as easy to read the poem as being about dreams in general and what
happens when people postpone making them come true. What I got from the poem was that the longer
you put your dreams on hold, the more the dreams will change and the less likely they will come true.

players don t consider the scientific concept of this amazing sport and the soccer ball itself. I inquired
about the material science of soccer and found some exceptionally fascinating truths that all soccer
players would do well to learn. The themes that I investigated are: What happens when kicking a

your kick. How soccer players curl and bend a ball and the physics involved. I chose to investigate the
soccer ball because since a young boy soccer has been my obsession and favourite hobby. I also chose
it since I was very intrigued on how to apply scientific methodology to enhance my kicking ability.
What Happens When You Kick a Soccer Ball When you kick a soccer ball, numerous things occur.

Piaget v. Vygotsky
Piaget vs. Vygotsky Both Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky have had a huge impact on learning and
teaching methods. Although they have different views on how children learn, they both suggest
helpful methods of teaching. Piaget and Vygotsky both focus on the idea of constructivism.
Constructivist theories believe learning includes real world situations, language, interaction, and
collaboration with others. Piaget believed in cognitive constructivism and Vygotsky believed in social
constructivism. They both had logical ideas with some similarities, but their theories also differed.

He believed that a child must interact with the social environment on an interpersonal level. Once this
has occurred, the child can internalize their experience and construct new ideas. For Vygotsky, culture
and social context are critical in learning and he believed that s when children learn the best. He came
up with the ZPD, which stands for zone of proximal development. The ZPD is the distance between
what a learner can do with help and what they can do without help. He thought that children learn best
within this zone because it advances their learning and challenges them. Vygotsky believed that with
the help of a teacher or mentor, students could understand concepts that they wouldn t be able to know
on their own. A classroom including Vygotsky s social constructivism theory would include
meaningful content and content that relates to the real world. Teacher student and student student
interaction are key in the classroom according to Vygotsky and will produce strategies such as
questioning, summarizing, predicting, and clarifying. A similarity between Piaget and Vygotsky is that
they both provided views on cognitive development using constructivism. They were both interested
in furthering the learning of children using cognitive processes. Also, another similarity that they share
is that they both believed that societal influences established cognitive growth in children. They

pursuing a common framework of regulation and establishing a common standard (Nye, 299 301). As
such, this begs the question of how the above can be implemented and achieved. International
organisations, agreements and governance is the functionalist answer to the above question (Rourke,
165), even under the framework in which states only consider self interests. Throughout the course of
time, these instruments have grown in number and complexity. Examples of their more rudimentary
forms are the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU),
which were both established more than one and a half centuries ago, providing a common technical
standard among states (Rourke, 137). In the past century, more sophisticated forms of international
governance in political economy evolved. For example, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade
(GATT) Uruguay Round in 1996 established the current World Trade Organisation (WTO) and an

Dirt Bike Usa
Dirt Bikes USA
Background: Dirt Bikes USA was founded in 1991 by Carl Schmidt and Steven McFadden. These two
entrepreneurs saw the increasing demand for Dirt bikes, and took the initiative to capitalize on their
idea. These two former bikers took their knowledge of dirt bikes and their love of the sport and
developed on that foundation. Their idea was to give the customer a product that was aptly suited for
the specific needs of the customer. Also the duo wanted to give something more than just a bike, they
wanted to provide the highest possible satisfaction at a reduced cost than their competitors. To reach
this goal they developed frames for dirt bikes that were more suited to off road handling and started
using these frames to build ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A better way to read the model is to say that the organization structure is sort of flat, hence it is still a
growing company, but 5 different groups report to one department and then that department as well as
two others report to the CEO and COO as aptly outlined by the model. With little expertise in the E
commerce business, it gives Dirt Bikes competitors a slight advantage in marketing its products on the
web.
The Problem: Dirt Bikes USA do not have an adequate internet based platform as to which it can
sell its products. This means that its competitors have the advantage to sell in prime estate areas that
would normally be essential to Dirt Bikes success. To overcome this problem the implementation of a
web site and more software are a necessity. To implement systems such as SAP or an Oracle system,
Dirt bikes will need to invest some serious money into the transition. However some downfalls that
arise when technology is introduced into a company include, teaching the staff to use the technology
effectively and intelligently, lost money at the point of implementation, and the possibility for the
system to crash if not set up properly. Dirt Bikes will also need a user friendly, visually stimulating,
easy to navigate web site. This means that more money will need to be spent in order to get the ball
rolling on this new transition. Because Dirt Bikes do not sell directly to retail customers, it relies on a
network of 40 distributors concentrated in

Peter Unger s Argument Against Skepticism Analysis
Critique against Unger s Argument for Skepticism
Do you ever wonder if you know anything? In his argument for skepticism, Peter Unger, states that
nobody ever knows anything to be so (Unger, Pg. 42). If this were to be true, can one be certain that
one knows things about oneself, the world one lives in, and about others? In fact, through the use of
different methods, one can indeed know things about oneself, the world one lives in, and about others,
which is why Peter Unger s argument for skepticism can t be true.
In order to understand Unger s argument and why it can t be true, one must first understand what
knowledge, skepticism, and Unger s argument and reasons for skepticism. According to the justified
true belief, knowledge is something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Utilizing the five senses in order to know something about oneself, the world one lives in, and others
usually works, but our senses sometimes deceive us. For example, when light is refracted in a certain
way, our brain leads us to believe that the thing such as a pencil is bent. Once we take the object out of
the water, however, we can clearly see that it was not bent. Additionally, one can never be absolutely
certain that what one knows about others is true. For example, one might think that they know the
favorite color of another individual to be blue, but be wrong as the other individuals favorite color is
actually green. Even though one cannot always know with certainty if one know things to be so, one
can always know some things to be

The Problem of Plagiarism Literature Review
The Problem of Plagiarism:
Literature Review Selection
Melinda Mindy L. Boucher
Lower Columbia College
The Problem Students routinely hand in papers in which the writing is so complex and the vocabulary
so sophisticated that there is doubt that they were written in the students own words. When samples of
the writing are typed into a Google search engine, sentences and whole paragraphs are found to be a
match. Students are confronted with the plagiarism and given information on the guidelines for
avoiding plagiarism. Often the result is a re constructed paper or a paper on a new topic in which
sentences are again cut and pasted from the Internet source, but one word or the punctuation was
changed. Students often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Don t Let Students Overlook Internet Plagiarism. The Education Digest. 70(2), 37 43. The main ideas
are that online resources have made plagiarism easy for students; teachers need to make sure the
guidelines and consequences are clear regarding plagiarism. Bugeja describes two case studies, one
before the advent of the computer and one after the invention of computers. He says, To catch a
plagiarist, make Boolian searches illogical, taking a rare word or proper noun from the plagiarized
document (Bugeja, 2004, 43). This article is useful for its comparison between non technology related
plagiarism and digital plagiarism. The conclusions are pragmatic: plagiarism can t be stopped; it can
be detected and punished. The intended audience is teachers. I agree wholeheartedly with his
conclusions and find myself sympathizing with his fatalistic attitude that plagiarism is always going to
be a problem.
· Credibility: As Director of Greenlee School of Journalism and Communications at Iowa State
University, the writer is authoritative.
· Accuracy: The article was written recently, in 2004, and contains specific information from a variety
of views.
· Reasonableness: The writing appears fair and objective.
· Support: There are no references listed, but the article was published in a respected periodical,
Education Digest.

Nurse s Role In The Tuskegee Syphilis Trial
Tuskegee Syphilis Trial Introduction
In 1932 the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), in conjunction with the Tuskegee Institute, of
Macon County Alabama, initiated a study to record the natural course of untreated syphilis in black
males. According to the Center for Disease Control, the study involved 600 black men, among whom
399 had the disease, and 201 did not, but were used as controls. Participants were under the
impression that they were being treated for bad blood , which was how researchers described their
condition. To the uneducated, impoverished, and vulnerable black men, this appeared to be ideal,
given that their participation earned them, free meals, medical examinations, and burial insurance.
Unfortunately, what they did not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a nurse, she had an obligation to provide the best medical care for the sick, while minimizing all
potential harms, but her participation in the study gained her the reputation of a nurse who betrayed
her profession. From another point of view, Nurse Rivers has also been as much of a victim as the
participants of the study, due to both gender and race. In a patriarchal society dominated by whites, to
an extent, she was powerless. There would have been dire consequences for a negro, especially a
woman to challenge the doctor with whom she worked. According the Darlene Clark Hines, the doctor
not only worked for the government, but was also a white male, which made him superior by virtue of
race and gender. As a loyal employee, Nurse River always did as she was told, and knew that a nurse
should not question orders given by doctors. Nurse Rivers was described as an upwardly mobile
woman, who had adopted the values and attitudes of middle class culture, which suggests that class
identity shaped her professional life. At the time, it was difficult to find a job, given the great
economic depression in America. Moreover, having lost her job with the Alabama State health
department, Nurse Rivers was more than happy work as a public health nurse. Through hard work, she
achieved her goal of entering the middle class arena and having a job helped her to maintain her
position. It was crucial as a black nurse struggling for a place in a profession dominated by whites, to
cooperate with her superiors. Similarly, by forging relations with her white colleagues, she improved
her status as a black professional working in the world of white medicine. Clearly, hard times,
economic austerity and upward mobility were influential factors, and as stated by James Jones, race,
professional hierarchies, class, and gender all played distinct and

Why Are Academic Learning Projects Becoming More Popular...
Topic for Investigation: Why are Academic Learning Projects becoming more popular at Universities
and what programs have contributed to impact students/nonprofits?
In 2012 in was reported in an academic journal written by Karin Braunsberger and Richard Flamm it
was stated that universities in the United States have been criticized for not contributing enough to the
social well being of communities within which they operate, and business schools have been accused
of failing to prepare students adequately for careers in business (Braunsberger Flamm). This criticism
against universities is what lead to the start of student involvement in the community by doing
academic service learning projects. One particular program has been introduced ... Show more content

Programs like superior edge can be expected to be developed and adopted by many more universities
to come. Nonprofit organizations reap the benefits of programs like superior edge through the
experience and professional documents that they get from the students in the program. Academic
service learning projects have become one of the best ways for Universities to make sure that their
students are ready for the real world.
Topic for Investigation: How do academic service learning projects done by graduate students differ or
relate to undergraduate students in perspective on the impact made on nonprofits? As programs such
as superior edge have been developed and University requirements have been changed to enforce the
idea of student involvement the overall impact has been positive to both nonprofit programs as well as
to the student. Looking further into these projects, it is now when the question of what exactly do
these services provided by the students do for the organizations associated with them. In this topic for
investigation the question that will be examined is how do academic service learning projects done by
undergraduate students compare to projects done by graduate students in perspective of overall impact
on a nonprofit. The two areas of interest that will be looked into when comparing the overall impact
on nonprofit will be improvement of societal

Nearly One-Fifth Of The U.S Military Is Female, However
Nearly one fifth of the U.S military is female, however certain jobs are not eligible for women. Is it
believed that women are not considered for front line combat and Special Forces positions. Opponents
argue that women are physically not capable of being effective for troops and would distract men
making the military less effective. However women are fully capable of becoming troops the only
thing holding them back is the stereotype that they are not physically capable of handing combat roles.
Women in the military have changed drastically over the last few decades from a strict roles often as
nurses, they are now moving into pilot fighting and working on aircraft carriers. In the military the
roles of women are questioned on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People claim that allowing women on the front lines with men would ultimately destroy morale. The
reality is that woman that should be allowed to apply for it and attempt to qualify for any position in
the military.History has shown that they can perform well and that given the right training and
environment they can work together. states Barbara Wilson, a retired Air Force captain. Supporters
argue that physical strength is just one part of being a soldier. Non physical attributes are also
important including Integrity, moral courage, and determination, those having nothing to do with
gender. The study called New opportunities for military women: effects upon Readiness cohesion and
morale, states the increased level of opportunity for women in the military has not had the near the
negative impact that critics warn would follow the changes. The study found that the increasing
woman s roles did not harm unit cohesion, in fact greater integration had some positive effects stating
it it was raising the level of professional standards. Denying women the right to pursue a career in the
military is a civil rights issue. Forbidding women from serving in combat situations is unethical
because they can perform the same duties as well or better than most of the men. Many women are

Hillary Clinton Aphorism
Hillary Clinton as President
Hillary Clinton would best suit as president, therefore her aphorism is to make a difference in the lives
of all Americans. Her goals after she wins the presidential election is to multiply our economy rate,
promote racial justice and citizenships, and to ensure that the united states have partnerships with our
allies to keep our country safe. For those reasons, if I was legalized to vote, Hillary Clinton would be
my primary choice.
For one thing, Clintons prerogative is to strengthen the economy. She is proposing in investing in
commendable paying jobs, and believes every American should have a wondrous occupation and a
phenomenal career. Not to mention, she focuses on her ambition to higher education, which will

The Second Golden Era Of The Film Industry
The second golden era of the film industry, new hollywood, came about from 1969 through 1980. As
the 1960 s started off positive and hopeful, there was now many Americans left devastated from the
depressing events that occurred after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, such as the Vietnam War.
There was also a conflict in the movie scene because Hollywood directors were torn between the old
styles of filming and the new techniques. By 1980, this conflict was finally resolved and a new
hollywood era was created. Although the old styles of filming still existed, new directors did not
follow the production code and decided to recreate genres. Directors also started to mix different
genres together into one film such as comedy, romance, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

These thriller films were very mainstream and popular in the box office because they were targeted
towards adults under the age of 25. The Night of the Living Dead also innovated the drive in movies,
although, these are not as popular nowadays. During this time movies only cost $1.50, but these
movies still brought in millions in revenue and this was the turning point for starting the personal
filmmaking trend. This is a clip from Dawn of the Dead, it was released in 1978 and it is about two
SWAT members who try to stop a zombie apocalypse. The director, George Romero, was instrumental
in creating this zombie horror genre. Romero used suspenseful background music when the zombies
were after them to make it scarier, although, I thought the makeup on the zombies was really fake
looking compared to the makeup on new zombie movies and television shows such as The Walking
Dead. It is amazing to see how makeup and editing can really change the impact movies make on the
audience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3 g5wu3bSg In 1969 President Richard Nixon began
to finally withdraw American troops from Vietnam. However, he also began secret bombing
campaigns in Cambodia to eliminate Communist supply lines. Americans were really frustrated with
the war and they burned their draft cards and started protesting against the war. This caused four
innocent students to be murdered at Kent State University because

My Vision And Plans For Personnel Psychology
With these words and emphasis, Taylor and Mosier (1948, p. 1) launched Personnel Psychology over
60 years ago. Then, as now, Personnel Psychology was centrally concerned with the study of people at
work. As the new editorial team begins its term, I want to take this opportunity to share my vision and
plans for Personnel Psychology. To understand where we are heading, however, it is helpful to first
consider where Personnel Psychology has been. As former editor John Hollenbeck noted when
describing some of Personnel Psychology s past ground breaking research, The impact that one has on
the future seems to be closely related to one s appreciation of the past (1998, p. 819). In that spirit, we
look forward by first looking back.

global and cross cultural issues, organizational climate, work attitudes and behaviors, motivation,

Criminal Activity During The 1920s
Criminal activity during the 1920s played a major role throughout the entirety of the decade, as it
related to the newfound culture the Roaring Twenties entailed. As the nation strove to achieve the
American Dream, parties, money and social representation became a main contribute to an individual
s persona. As these factors were sought to be obtained, many criminal engagements were enacted.
These crimes included but were not limited to, bootlegging, organized crime, scandals and murder,
which were set by the infamous Al Capone and the Mafia, with contribution to the corruption of the
FBI, the KKK and their racial and religious prejudice, Leopold and Loeb, and Warren G. Harding, in
relation to the Teapot Dome Scandal. All of these acts are relative to modern society as they paved
way for greater emphasis on civil and political issues in the following decades, as society began to
regard national security and pushed toward a movement to enact stricter laws and regulations towards
individual matters.
The 1920s was a time of great criminal activity, with prohibition laws in America and the world in an
economic depression (Nash, 1). Organized criminals such as American mobsters thrived during this
time. Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde, and John Dillinger were the most well known of the gangsters at
the time, many of the common people looked to these criminals as heroes . There were a tremendous
amount of people who turned to criminal activity; mostly because jobs were scarce and

  • 2. Gus Van Sant s Elephant Van Sant s film represents the reality of high school, focusing on the look of its beauty, characters, while also ignoring the basic grime inherent on most campuses. Van Sant takes pride in portraying a valuable image. What s in the room really touches you if it is closely examined. The hallways and the fields of the school are in pristine condition, staying abnormally clean, almost too clean for a school. Despite this seeming glorification of the building, the hallways are kept as a constant secondary to the sharply focused characters the camera constantly follows. This really takes the focus away from the bare walls and empty hallways and places it directly on the students. The film isn t about the location that it occurred, but more about the people that it happened to. The focus is on the students of the film, both figuratively and literally. The camera appears to look like it s never stop moving. It does halt for brief pauses that seem to relax the viewer. There is some frustration upon watching because you can t collect all the data you need to deconstruct the film. However the scenes do go go back and forth with each other sometimes. At one point you may notice that you re following a student and it will cut into the perspective of another student whom will pass by the student that was originally being followed. This sort of filming can cause confusion but employs a nice twist to the film. The plot doesn t post the events in chronological order. When a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Examples Of Co-Operative Principle 2.2 Co operative Principle In 1967, H. Paul Grice, in his William James Lectures at Harvard University, theorized a set of rules that communicators should follow while communicating. Grice labels these set of rules as Co operative Principle. He formulates theory of co operation in the following way. For Grice, talk exchanges are continuous and the participants, to some extent, make co operative efforts so that the purpose of exchange is achieved. The purpose of exchange can be formulated before it takes place or it may change during conversation. For conversation to be successful participants are expected to follow the general principle of conversation i.e. co operative principle. Grice further categorizes co operative principle into its maxims ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The kind of expression expressed by speaker should be replied verbally or non verbally. The neutral verbal or non verbal behaviour i.e. no reply is considered as non co operative behaviour. An offer should be accepted or diplomatically rejected; a question should be answered. Grice calls violation of these maxims of co operative principles as flouting of maxims. Observance and violation of maxims of co operative principles can be studied with following examples. In the above example maxim of quantity has been observed because it follows all the sub maxims of quantity. Speaker B s reply to A s question is as informative as is required. It doesn t contribute more information than necessary. The same question with a different reply is an example of violation of maxim of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Greek Mythology and Its Effects on Civilization Greek religion encompasses the collection of beliefs and rituals practiced in ancient Greece in the form of both popular public religion and cult practices. Many Greeks recognized the major gods and goddesses, such as Zeus, Poseidon, Hades and many others through philosophies such as Stoicism. The religious practices of the Greeks extended beyond mainland Greece to the islands and costs of Ionia in Asia Minor to Sicily and southern Italy, and scattered Greek colonies in the Western Mediterranean. Greek religion was tempered by Etruscan cult and belief to form much of the later Ancient Roman religion. Greek religion had an extensive mythology. She was taken from us too early, and had her whole life ahead of her. Connie s sickness was terrible and god took her pain away and brought her to heaven. She was loved by everyone she met and always could brighten up someone s day with her beautiful smile. Connie was so intelligent and knew so many things. Her life was cut too short, but we didn t deserve someone like Connie, and she belongs in the kingdom of god. She may be gone, but she is still my little girl. Francis seemed to be genuinely sad about his sister, but they never did have that same relationship as her and Kip did. Francis was away at school most of the time so it was understandable. I saw through the glass window that there was a young man running up to the doorway, he was wearing army greens. I did not want Jack Husting, the cause of my daughter s death, to be attending her funeral. His childish blonde hair was waving around frantically as he poked his head through each window trying to see inside. he yelled out to me. Mrs Westaway, Kip!! Kip looked up at Jack with a look of sadness, and then looked over at me. He may not be allowed in, Kip. I said quietly. Abortion As A Medical Or Surgical Procedure Abortion is described as a medical or surgical procedure to remove a fetus and the placenta from a woman s uterus by a trained healthcare worker (Nih.gov.2014). After hearing a case named Roe vs. Wade the Supreme Court, abortion was made legal in the United States in 1973. For a very long time, I was against abortion due to lack of information and exposure to other cultures. Because I grow up in a very religious household, the word abortion was definitely not part of the vocabulary. My parents taught me to believe that abortion was a sin against God and that removing a pregnancy equals to committing a murder. Many people have different views about abortion and they feel strongly about the debate. I believe that everyone views are individual and mostly feel motivated because of religious beliefs or personal experiences. Prior to watching the videos, I did not realize how much people struggle to make abortion legal in the United States. However I did know about illegal abortions because they are frequently done in West Africa where I grew up. Moreover the video showed when times women were having pregnancies removed against the law. Nonetheless women who decided not to carry an unwanted pregnancy due to one reason or other have found ways to have an abortion. Being in desperate situations basically made them resort to dangerous and sometimes deadly methods. Many of these women had to be hospitalized for complications or lost their lives too ashamed to seek for help or for fear of criminal charges. Before being legalized, it was estimated that over a million of illegal abortions was done and over a thousand of women have died due to complications and infections. (Castle .M. A 2011). The things that impressed me the most in the video are the fact that the country saw was the rise of the women movement to fight against the inequalities and unfair treatments toward them. According to video, young activist marched the streets, organized public speeches to demand the legal right to abortion in many States. In addition, the things that I did not agree with ... Please describe all the possible adaptive immune response to this uncharacterized virus Introduction: The adaptive immune response is the response of antigen specific lymphocytes to antigen, it functions through a series of steps aimed at limiting or destroying a particular antigen. T and B cells primarily mediate the responses of the adaptive immune system as they obtain the characteristics of specificity and memory. There are two classes of adaptive immune response; humoral immune response and cell mediated or antibody immune response. In order for the adaptive immune response to know when to respond, how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their two primary jobs are to ensure antibody production against the appropriate target antigen occurs and there is presentation of antigen to T cells and signals for T cell activation are provided. B cells provide protection of the host by producing antibodies that identify and neutralize foreign objects like viruses. These B cells then differentiate into plasma cells and memory cells. Plasma cells are terminally differentiated B cells that remain committed to the continuous production and secretion of antibodies. Each plasma will synthesise and secret only one type of antibody. Memory B cells are long lived B cells that have specialised to remembering the type of substances that the immune system has seen before, they are primed for rapid response to repeated exposure of the antigen. Memory B cells are generated in the lymphoid tissue and migrate to the lymph nodes and reside in the ready mode for activation in order to quickly recognise and attack any returning virus. T cells attack cells that have become infected by viruses, there are two types of T cells the T helper cell ad the cytotoxic T cell. T helper cells do not attack infected cells directly, instead they release chemical messengers known as cytokines that signal differentiation, growth and action of other immune cells. Cytotoxic T cells go around in the body looking for and wanting to destroy pathogenic cells directly. Cytotoxic T cells attach to the compromised cell and release chemical factors that are able to kill their targets by programming then to undergo apoptosis. * Dendritic ... Worm Lab Report Title: The Effect of Nicotine on the Heart Rate of the Lumbriculus Variegatus Introduction: Background This lab is being done to demonstrate the effects of stimulants on the circulatory system of blackworms. In this lab, the stimulant we have chosen to use is Nicotine. A stimulant is an agent that causes increased activity, especially in the nervous or cardiovascular systems. In this lab, we will put blackworms into the Nicotine to look at the differences in pulse rates when compared to a control. Table 3 shows that the heart rate of worms is faster in the nicotine with the average pulse rate at 15.5 pulse/min. This table shows the data for the 15 control worms in water and then the same 15 in Nicotine. There are not 15 worms in the nicotine solution because our first solution was too strong and 6 of the worms died. The solution being used in this graph is 2.5 mL of Nicotine and 1 mL H20. This graph shows that the pulse rates of worms in Nicotine tend to be higher than that of the worms in water. This data proves the idea that stimulants raise heart rate. Conclusions: ... • 10. The Impact Of Malnutrition On Guatemala And Its Effects On... The Impact of Malnutrition in Guatemala Most children in Guatemala at the age of five begin to suffer from malnourishment while in other countries such as the U.S. children suffer from obesity. In Guatemala, half of all the children under the age of 5 suffer from chronic malnourishment. It is the largest economy in Central America and also the most populous country in the region. Even so, many members of Guatemala remain minimally active in the economy and live in poverty (Guatemala s government 1). Guatemala is rich in agricultural yet they don t feed their own people. According to the World Food Programme in 2009 Guatemala ranked 133 out of 187 countries in the Human Development Index of 2012 (1). The HDI is a system used to rank countries on their overall achievements economically and socially. Guatemala faces a food insecurity crisis due to droughts. The global economic crisis has reduced exports, foreign investments, tourism revenues and access to credit thereby increasing the government s budget deficit and unemployment. The rise in the price of agricultural inputs has reduced the availability of subsidized fertilizers (1). Farmers are affected but not as much as families. Due to the crisis families are restricted to the access of food. In comparison to the United States families are less likely to face these crisis because they receive help from Welfare, Medicaid and Medicare. • 11. There are many Types of Security Back to the question at hand, when is too much security too much? The turning point is different for each situation. A home computer can have too much security when the user installs two separate security programs. These programs then end up fighting each other and not protecting the computer at all. For a business it can be when the company begins to lose money by having less time to be productive. A simple example would be when a company installs an auto log off feature that terminates a user s session after they do not do any actions for ten minutes. After a month of testing the new feature the employees report that they feel as though they are spending as much time logging in as they are doing any work. To help decide when a system has too much security can easily be solved when dealing with obvious issues, but if the task becomes harder the issue can be solved in a formulaic fashion. In the study An Analytical Security Model for Existing Software Systems by Ayaz Isazadeh and a few other researchers, over the course of four years, developed a formula for how much security would be needed per architectural system. This type of study helps more than simple businesses, governments everywhere take the information into consideration when creating or changing their system. For example, the U.S. government is wrote about in the article Defending America in Cyberspace where it is said that the government continues to improve its ability to understand vulnerabilities of ... • 14. Mandrill Vs Gibbon Essay Introduction There are many similarities and differences in primate species. The ones I chose to focus on today was the Philippine tarsier, Mandrill and the gibbon. What made me choose these non human primates so interesting was the uniqueness and appearance of each primate. I plan to explain the similarities of their teeth structure and purposes and the similarities of their diet and feeding and also the differences of their behaviors. Mandrills are extremely colorful, perhaps more so than any other mammal. They also have extremely long canine teeth that can be used for self defense though baring them is typically a friendly gesture among mandrills. These are primarily terrestrial monkeys, and they move with long arms to move on the ground for fruits, roots, ... Also they share the same diet and like to feed on the same resources such as leaves, and insects. The Philippine tarsier share many similarities with the Gibbon they are both arboreal which means they spend most of their time in the trees. At first glance, the Malbim would seem to object to the government s ban to FGM. The Malbim argues that individual freedoms are greater than societal needs. Each individual must pursue his/her goal of fulfilling the divine purpose, the elevation of the physical through the spiritual. This can be done through the pursuit of self development and self perfection via Torah observance. If this is the case, society, according to the Malbim, should help individuals reach moral perfection by giving support and freedom to individuals. The role of government is to create an environment free from impediments as much as possible and give the individual the maximum opportunity to pursue good (Sicker and TanenbaumCHAT 244 245). However, in this case, the doctors are not reaching moral perfection, as they are violating the Jewish law of bodily mutilation. From a Jewish perspective, these doctors are straying from self perfection, as this procedure is impeding on the divine purpose. The Malbim would argue that the government should bring these doctors a step closer to moral perfection, by banning the practice of FGM on girls. This way, the government would be fulfilling its role of creating an environment where individuals would be able to reach moral perfection on their own. The ZPD is the distance between what a learner can do with help and what they can do without help. • 40. International Organisations, Agreements And Governance No man [or woman] is an island is a sentence that captures humanity s need for interaction in order to secure its best interests. In the context of international trade, supranational structures are necessary for all parties best interests. With globalisation proceeding at an ever increasing pace, the frequencies and magnitudes of economic interactions between actors of different states increases exponentially (Nye, 298). Growing complex interdependence creates a common interest for cooperation, in terms of pursuing a common framework of regulation and establishing a common standard (Nye, 299 301). As such, this begs the question of how the above can be implemented and achieved. International organisations, agreements and governance is the functionalist answer to the above question (Rourke, 165), even under the framework in which states only consider self interests. Throughout the course of time, these instruments have grown in number and complexity. Examples of their more rudimentary forms are the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which were both established more than one and a half centuries ago, providing a common technical standard among states (Rourke, 137). In the past century, more sophisticated forms of international governance in political economy evolved. For example, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) Uruguay Round in 1996 established the current World Trade Organisation (WTO) and an elaborate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In a patriarchal society dominated by whites, to an extent, she was powerless. There would have been dire consequences for a negro, especially a woman to challenge the doctor with whom she worked. According the Darlene Clark Hines, the doctor not only worked for the government, but was also a white male, which made him superior by virtue of race and gender. As a loyal employee, Nurse River always did as she was told, and knew that a nurse should not question orders given by doctors. Nurse Rivers was described as an upwardly mobile woman, who had adopted the values and attitudes of middle class culture, which suggests that class identity shaped her professional life. At the time, it was difficult to find a job, given the great economic depression in America. Moreover, having lost her job with the Alabama State health department, Nurse Rivers was more than happy work as a public health nurse. Through hard work, she achieved her goal of entering the middle class arena and having a job helped her to maintain her position. It was crucial as a black nurse struggling for a place in a profession dominated by whites, to cooperate with her superiors.
