Lincoln Movie Analysis
Slavery was a massive issue many African Americans faced during the civil war. The film Lincoln,
directed by Steven Spielberg, is a fantastic historical movie. The film focuses on the life of Abraham
Lincoln during his second Presidential term. President Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the
United States at the time. Lincoln was honored by many because he advocated for the African
American people. Lincoln wished to pass the thirteenth amendment in the House of Representatives,
which abolishes slavery. He felt as though slavery was immortally wrong. Slavery was an issue for all
Africans American. Children were sold to owners for profit no matter the age. Passing this law was a
challenging issue for Lincoln and required a lot of support ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being that the United States is contained with Democrats and Republicans. Lincoln success to passing
the thirteenth amendment was a controversial issue for many. As discussed in class these groups were
formed to give voice to ordinary people and to disable the Government from becoming tyrannical.
Many people disagreed with the passing of this law. Many feared that the abolishing of slaves will
affect many job opportunities for themselves. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863,
which had freed most slaves as a fighter in the war but had not made slavery illegal. Lincoln faith
towards passing this issue was very extreme. Slaves where page the bare minimum for their service in
the war. However, in order for slavery to be abolished, Lincoln had to gain votes from Democratic and
Republican parties. Some politicians see peace as a necessary precursor to the passing of the
amendment, but others see the passing of the amendment as a step on the road to the end of the Civil
War. In order to gain votes for many different regions, Lincoln had to ensure individuals, pay and job
opportunities to be successful in the abolishment of slavery. Abraham Lincoln had a lot of faith and
patience towards the abolishment of

The Circle Consequences
Consequences of the Social Network Age
By: Kelsey Kjeldsen
Summary: The Circle
The Circle is a novel that toes the line of the effects of too much technology and the possible great
innovations that can come from it. Dave Eggers chooses to expose the possible negative effects of
these innovations through the character Mae, who is a new college graduate that receives what she
believes is a great job offer at a super tech company; The Circle. The Circle can be thought of as a
combination of present day Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Basically, The Circle is
a super corporation that is teetering on the side of monopolization of everything with the disguise of
social good. Mae is drawn to The Circle by its fun campus that ... Show more content on

We have fought for politicians and our governments to be more transparent through the years, and we
have made strides to do that with the rise of technology. The government now shares majority of its
actions online so that citizens can stay informed, and this is generally a good thing. But The Circle
brings up and important issue of when is there enough transparency? When do we stop being
transparent and let people have their privacy? As companies like Apple and Google continue to create
new innovations our society will have to address these issues. In the future we should strive to create
technologies that will reduce crimes, increase honesty in governments, and allow people to interact
with each. We should not create these technologies at the cost of personal privacy or loss of real life
interactions. We do not want a future where kids do not know how to interact on a playground or
where adults cannot talk to each other meaningfully in person because they have lost social skills. We
also do not want to lose our personal privacy, so that people feel embarrassed about their actions, and
by making life more transparent we are also making it less enjoyable by being self

Beta Club Research Paper
Why I would like to join the Beta club
If I was given the opportunity to join the Beta club I would be the happiest person in the world! I want
to join the Beta club because I would meet new people, I would help a lot of people, and I would be
caring and have responsibility. If I was to join the Beta club I would take it very seriously. So that way
I can work hard. Before I make my decision on being in the Beta club I would think carefully.
I would love to meet new people while I am in the Beta club. First of all they would show me how to
do things. Also, they would be respectful. The final reason why I would like to meet new people is
that then they might be able to tell me more about Beta club. So that s the first reason why I would

The Battle over Safe Injection Sites
Insite: The Battle over Supervised Injection Sites
In the 1990 s there was an epidemic of HIV outbreaks in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.
Injection drug users were found to be the leading cause of this, and a public health emergency was
declared (Fafard, 2012). The mortality and morbidity resulting from this increasing injection drug use
became a major political issue. This resulted in the adoption of harm reduction by the government as
one of their four pillars of their drug strategy (Fafard, 2012). Harm reduction is a set of practical
strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use (Boyd, 2013).
In September 2003 Insite, North Americas first harm reduction supervised injection site, ... Show more

There was also no increase of users relapsing into injection drug use, nor did it negatively influence
those seeking to stop drug use (Kerr et al., 2006). The research shows that Insite has not promoted
increased illicit drug injection, but rather it has attracted individuals with histories of injection drug
use.
Another claim put forth by the Conservatives is that SISs are harmful to communities. They believe
SISs create public nuisances, and threaten public safety (Broadhead, Kerr amp; Alice, 2002). Research
on the other hand argues that SISs can address issues related to public. Since Insite opened the public
has noticed less public injections, less syringe droppage, and less complaints about drug user
nuisances (Potier et al., 2014). It also cleans up public environment such as streets and alleyways.
Drug use is still an illicit activity and it takes place in unsterile environments such as behind
dumpsters and shooting galleries. SISs provide sterile environments for users and are a lot safer than
shooting up in the streets. This leads to less public injection and a better community environment
(Potier et al., 2014). Local police data was also evaluated and there has been no increase in crime,
violence, or drug trafficking around Insite. There were no significant statistical changes in rates of
drug trafficking. There were 124 incidents in the year before and 116 incidents after. There were 147

Schenck V. United States Court Case Analysis
Twenty Thousand Flyers In this essay, I will analyze John Mill s argument on freedom of speech in
relation to Schenck v. United States court case. During the early 20th century, the U.S. government
decided to join World War I. Hence, they held a draft, by choosing random male citizens who were in
between the age of eighteen to forty five to fight for the country. At this time, Charles T. Schenck was
the general secretary of the U.S. socialist party in Philadelphia in the early 20th century. He was
against the U.S. entry into World War I and its implementation of a military draft. Thus, he distributed
over twenty thousand flyers to U.S. citizens in objection against the draft process. Therefore, the
government arrested him for violating the Espionage Act. The congress created this act in 1917 to

government declared war against Germany. President Woodrow Wilson wanted to stop the disloyalty
of the immigrants, German natives, and people who opposed the government. Therefore, after a
couple of months, the congress passed the Espionage Act. This act forced the people to support the
government. After this act was ratified, speaking against the U.S. government during WWI became
illegal. The U.S. government declared the Espionage Act to increase people s nationalism and to make
them fully committed to the war. This act affected everyone living in the U.S. More than two thousand
people were arrested while the Espionage Act was in effect. Although, most young men wanted to take
a part in the war, others were living in fear. They were afraid to talk against the government and the
war in public. This act associated a sense of a dictatorship with the government. The people of the
U.S. were disunited to the point that some accused their neighbors of being unpatriotic just because of
their ethnicity. Based on this, the government arrested many innocent Germans, and thus, only those
who did not question the government, were able to

Chivalry Bias Research Paper
Chivalry Bias/Sentencing differences between male and female offenders
Geisy Cobas
Radford University
It is a question many have, whether or not there is a gender bias in the criminal justice system of
America, and even other countries. Are female offenders treated less strictly than male offenders by
officers of the law and even the courts? This paper will review articles related to the topic of male and
female offenders sentencing differences. The term chivalry means to treat others, women especially
with courtesy, sympathy and respect. The chivalry theory, which comes from the mindset of treating
women like higher beings, states that women offenders are treated more leniently than men by the
criminal justice system. Male chivalry means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lyons published an article about the sentencing discrepancies between male and female sex offenders.
The research represented in this article examines the evil woman hypothesis, and examines sentencing
discrepancies between male sex offenders and female sex offenders. The evil women hypothesis states
that women offenders often receive harsher punishment than men in the criminal justice system, on the
grounds that they have not only violated legal laws but also society s gender expectations. (Chesney
Lind, 1984; Erez, 1992). However, research proves the opposite for female sex offenders. This article
by the Feminist Criminology Journal used the National Corrections Reporting Program data to
identify registered male and female sex offenders for the years 1994 to 2004, and the sentences they
received for specific sex offenses. The data gathered revealed a significant difference in sentence
length between men and women sex offenders. The evil woman hypothesis would assume women are
sentenced more harshly, but according to the National Corrections Reporting Program male sex
offenders receive longer sentences for sex offenses than

Christian Philosophy of Education Essay
Christian Philosophy of Education As we go through our day by day lives in a very secular world, I
believe it is very easy to question ourselves as Christian educators. We ask ourselves if we are doing
our jobs exactly to God s calling. Are we striving to teach the truth? And with that, what is truth?
According to Gaebelein in his book The Pattern of God s Truth, All truth is God s truth. As educators
we are called upon to cultivate Christlike minds (Moreland). This is quite the task, especially given
our surrounding circumstances and constant secular environment. Not only are we, as educators
surrounded by this secularism, but our young, adolescent students are as well. So, how do we
accomplish such as task of guiding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Christian educators, we are called to promote and support learning in those areas. True teaching is
a sharing of realities, likening the teaching process and weaving connections between their teachings
and understandings themselves and the world around them. If we do not make connections for the
students to the world around them, many times these precious gifts graced upon them will be
overlooked or passed by because the young minds may not be able to recognize them. Some areas of
observation might be seen as open doors to see or perceive and understand something of God and His
motion as reflected through the created world and the Bible. Other areas might be seen as open doors
to respond, apply, express and practice in ways that are consistent with biblical values. When these
areas are discovered and embraced, many times they can address the major developmental needs in
the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional realms of the student s life. Identifying these
areas is helping the students begin their walk with the Lord and their own calling. The teaching
learning environment should be receptive to the nature of human nature as it was originally created in
the image of God. This means it should acknowledge students as creatures of God (again, not simply
as subjects in a room) by engaging and stimulating the full

Stereotypes Impact On Society
The Impact of Stereotypes on Stereotypes A stereotype may be negative or positive, but even positive
stereotypes present two problems: They are cliches, and they present a human being as far more
simple and uniform than any human being actually is (Kress). Stereotypes impact everyone, everyday,
of every minute. It doesn t matter if they are good or bad, stereotypes are almost never right. They
cause false expectations and often lead to debates, fights, and someone is always offended by them.
Stereotypes can be defined as an image that a large group of people believes about a certain person or
thing and they impact our society in many ways (Stereotypes). For example, in an interview with Guy
Raz from NPR, Jamila Lyiscott says that I think that there s tension. I think there s a tension with
fighting to not internalize some of what has been placed on you, especially during very important
formative years (Raz, Jamila). This shows that stereotypes can cause people to develop some internal
conflict, such as debating on whether or not the stereotypes that are placed on people are true. In
another interview with Guy Raz, Maz Jobrani says, Look, stereotypes exist because there s always
some truth to stereotypes. Not always, but often... (Raz, Maz). This means that there is a little truth in
stereotypes, and this is most often what makes people believe them. If they didn t have any truth in
them, they wouldn t exist. Clearly stereotypes have a negative effect on society, but

The Secret to Humor is Surprise in The Weather of New...
Critical Analysis Essay The secret to humor is surprise Aristotle. The two stories I m going to talk
about The Weather of New England by Mark Twain and The Dog That Bit People by James Thurber
are both strange humorous essay with a twist. Both stories have a central conflict, in The Dog That Bit
People a family is burden with a dog that bites everyone, including the narrator. The Weather of New
England talks about the weather of the new colonies and how spontaneous they were and the different
forms they came in. Both humorous authors use style, tone, and perspective as a technique to tell their
story and conflicts. Mark Twain uses style in The Weather of New England , when he uses words like
sumptuous and Centennial to describe what s going on in the story. The author refers to the weather as
sumptuous saying that there are splendid and lavish varieties of the weather of New England that
cause a stranger to admire and regret or pity the weather. He also says that the brightest gems in the
New England weather is the dazzling uncertainty. The authors uses words like dazzling to show his
style. His style is sarcastic because he makes the uncertainty of not knowing what the weathers going
to be as a good thing when really the unexpected weather is causing problems. The author of The Dog
That Bit People James Thurber on one hand uses hyperbole s like Mark Twain ,but on the

Female Heroism
In both Goblin Market and The Bloody Chamber , women face objectification as pornographic objects
whose solitary purpose is to be a man s appealing possession. Evidently, the objectification of women
impacted the way each author constructed their texts. Feminist movements aiming to undermine these
rigid female and male roles are prominent in the time period of both literary works. Both Christina
Rossetti and Angela Carter use strange worlds to differentiate from the typical fairy tale s predictable
conclusion and instead make a statement through the use of a female heroine. Both literary works

Betrayal In The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe
In the novel, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, betrayal takes place in many situations and it is
almost always followed by forgiveness. Some of the motives behind the betrayal in the novel include
fear, spite, temptation, pride, selfishness, and doing what is right. In C.S. Lewis s The Lion, The
Witch, and The Wardrobe, Lewis includes the recurring theme of betrayal and forgiveness. The first
examples of betrayal are by Mr.Tumnus. After he first plans to betray Lucy, he then changes his mind
and betrays the White Witch instead. When Lucy first enters Narnia through the wardrobe, she runs
into a Faun who introduces himself as Mr.Tumnus. Upon finding out Lucy is a human, he befriends
her and invites her to his home where he secretly plans to betray her and take her to the White Witch,
who ordered all creatures of Narnia to report any sightings of humans. He later confesses to Lucy his
intentions when first meeting her, but says that he changed his mind because he has taken a liking to
her. He says to Lucy: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

motives for betrayal are fear and friendship. He fears what the White Witch will turn him to stone, but

Analysis Of Ben Jonson s The Beloved Son
Ben Jonson brings forth a memorable poem he has written in memoir to his beloved son, whom he lost
at a young age. He begins this poem with a goodbye, which entitles him to feel responsible in some
way towards this son s death. The speaker in this poem seems to be Johnson himself, considering his
writing is deep and truthful which connects to his own feelings. The form of the poem is written in
iambic pentameter, as a farewell to his beloved young son who died of a bubonic plague. Jonson s
poem reaches new levels as he prepares himself to create a poem off his track of style, however,
through love, envy and mourning, the author comes to a satisfying conclusion that he will no longer
fall in love with something so fragile.
In this particular poem, there are five groups, which are labeled as a foot: in each of these there is an
unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, which makes a pair of iamb s.
As what he loves may never like too much.
Perfectly exemplified, line 12 of the poem expressed the use of iambic pentameter as what he loves
may ne ver like too much . The first foot begins with an unstressed syllable, what followed by loves
which is the stressed syllable. In line three, Jonson stumbles a little as he addresses the loss of his son
and he is off the pattern of the iambic pentameter.
Seven years thou wert lent to me, and I thee pay
It is the first time he deals directly with losing his son, as he explains in great detail without giving too

they can stir up any trouble. He references the books and how they were shortened and then just
relying on titles and finally forgetting about them. Modern society has become about the instant

that a child can operate a piece of computer more efficiently than that of a man in his 60 s. Bradbury
refers to the mechanical hound with human like qualities, The mechanical Hound slept but did not
sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibration, softly illuminated kennel back in
a dark corner of the fire house. The dim light of one in the morning, the moonlight from the open sky

faintly trembling beast. Light flickered on bits of ruby glass and on sensitive capillary hairs in the
nylon brushed nostrils of the creature that quivered gently, its eight legs spidered under it on rubber
padded paws (24). The hound is designed and programed to be the avenger for society, to look over
and protect the people of this society. It is the Fireman s watchdog, although it looks nothing like a
watch dog. The hound is the governments way to manipulate control over technology, a way to instill
fear in society. Does modern society have cause for concern? The government still spy s

The God s Script Short Story
The God s Script, by Jorge Luis Borges, is representing the structure of knowledge through a dream of
TzinacΓ‘n, the central character, and the narrative presence of the jaguar. Borges wrote the short story
to describe TzinacΓ‘n s dream of the god s script, a language that would help him fulfill his destiny
while he is imprisoned: his destiny is to be able to die in peace. TzinacΓ‘n is a magician of the pyramid
of Qaholom. He can survive torture in silence; he will never lose hope. In this short story, Borges is
trying to say the dreams reveal knowledge of things that can come to reality. TzinacΓ‘n, the central

as the pyramid of Qaholom, that is burned and demolished. As he said, They struck down the idol of
the god before my very eyes, but he did not abandon me and I endured the torments in silence (169).
When he talks about the pyramid, he seems like he is more pleased that his gods are here with him
instead of completely disappearing. He clearly stated that they are not abandoning him; even though
he is being tortured, they do not leave his side. The impressions of the things that are happening to
him are like the things that happen to his gods. TzinacΓ‘n senses that the things he thinks about

The History of The Founding of Spalding (Extra): The history of Spalding is one that few know, yet is

My time in Banff brought about some amazing learning moments for me; some more direct than
others.
I will be sharing a couple of the ripple effect lessons I learned upon returning home. What I had
learned made me question further some of the concepts I had pondered before...one of them being our
need to be productive.
A large part of the reason why I was having trouble settling in and simply enjoying my time in Banff
was because I had an underlying need to be productive. Even though at a conscious level I no longer
buy into and accept that our time needs to be filled with productive pursuits (not to be confused with
purpose), at a subconscious level that belief was buried quite deep, and so my two minds were
struggling with each other.
We have been raised in a culture that highly values productivity, and that in itself wouldn t be such a
bad thing if we hadn t taken it to extremes. We have come to value ourselves based on how productive
we are, which has led us to be driven, to push ourselves, and to preserve under all conditions...and if

Overview Of Lucrece And Titus Andronicus
In many ways, Shakespeare writes Rome from an anthropomorphized perspective, with some of his
characters so much an embodiment of the culture that one may argue it is direct representation. In
Shakespeare s Lucrece and Titus Andronicus, the protagonists represent the current culture of Rome, it
is their respective deaths that signify the birth of a new Rome. Contrarily, the antagonists in the
aforementioned tales actually seem to manifest as an anti Rome, their distinct lack of the upheld
roman attributes lead to their downfall. For this reason, Rome is argued by many to be a character in
and of itself in Shakespeare s various works. Rome is a character that speaks only through the mouth
of its most loyal citizens, it weaves its way through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sextus Tarquinius is already a powerful figure in Rome, he uses this to his advantage when asking
Lucrece for lodgings. As an upstanding member of Roman society, Lucrece assumes that this man is
safe. His dishonour is shown most predominantly however when he confidently attempts to
manipulate Lucrece by insisting that her lack of compliance will culminate in her husband s shame.
He tells her, ...some worthless slave of thine I ll slay, / To kill thine honour with thy life s decay . In
this deplorable act of cunning Sextus is the victor, he gets what he wants from her with no true
struggle and is assured that his wrongdoing will reap no consequence. Tamora differs from Sextus as
she does not start out in power, she begins as a prisoner of war and rises as the new wife of
Saturninus. Tamora gains the upper hand by manipulating her husband and sons into doing her
bidding. Tamora essentially has control over the crown and has two brutes ready at her beck and call.
Her goal is outlined within the second act when she proclaims I ll find a day to massacre them all
(2.1.453) She manages to obtain much of the justice she had sought after, managing to truly dent the
might of the Andronicus family. Not only is she the cause of Lavinia s rape and mutilation but the
death of Bassianuss, Martius, and Quintus. Tamora s plans of revenge seem to be unstoppable, she
truly holds the upper hand

A Brief Note On Book The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn
Sarah Jane Reshetiloff
Mr. O Hearn
Honors British Literature
26 September 2015
Social Satire in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain s novel The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn is a masterful social satire that demonstrates the awakening of a young, adventurous
boy living in a culture of slavery.
He uses humor and an unreliable narrator to convey social satire in the novel to reflect the flaws of
society toward in the antebellum south.
The novel was published in 1884, just after slavery was abolished in 1865. Needless to say, racism
was prevalent and although slavery was outlawed, colored people did not have equal rights to white
people. African Americans across the country were still treated disrespectfully, beaten, and often
murdered. With the outlawing of slavery in the south, racism was much more common there than in
the north. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn takes place on the Mississippi River along Missouri
and other various southern states.
In the story, Huck Finn is a young boy who seeks adventures and does not wish to be civilized by the
women in charge of him. He sets out on a journey to help free a slave named Jim, in a time period
where slavery is legal in the south. They encounter many obstacles such as other characters, means of
transportation, the possibility of getting caught, and also the war Huck is at with himself. He battles
over whether he is doing the right thing. He feels that freeing Jim is morally correct but because of the
society he

How Forensic Science Advances Have Caused More People
This is my Case Study about Keith Henderson, the basic details of the case are as follows; he
indecently assaulted a 16 year old girl while knocking her boyfriend to the ground causing him
injuries. He then falsely imprisoned them both at gunpoint in a field and made the boy laydown while
she performed sexual acts upon him. (http://www.bbc.co.uk) This case provides a great insight into
how forensic science advances have caused more people to be convicted of their crimes. Crime scene
investigators found a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) profile from a single sperm head at the time,
which was not enough to conduct a forensic analysis. At last a decade later, forensic scientists had a
way to make the DNA useable through developments known as ... Show more content on

The 16 year old boyfriend was hit at the back of the head and lost consciousness temporarily.
Henderson grabbed the girl and held her at gunpoint threatening to shoot her if she spoke, he forced
them both to climb over a gate into a field. This is when he instructed the boy to lay flat on the ground
of which he then forced the girl to perform sexual actions. Despite being traumatised by the event the
girl ensured that Henderson s DNA was planted upon her clothes. (http://www.independent.co.uk/)
This was a key feature into prosecuting and bringing Henderson to justice. It played a key role in the
forensic investigation behind the case. Forensic evidence secured the case which put Henderson
behind bars for 12 and a half years and put him on the sex offenders register for life. He was
imprisoned for his crimes in July 2012 almost 11 years after he s offence.

This case shows how forensic science can greatly aid the police service as when they conducted this
original investigation; they had no suspects and eliminated more than 1500 people from their enquires.
There were no developments in the case for over a decade, and it would have stayed that way if it
wasn t for DNA advances. CH INSP Memory explained Advances in forensic science have brought

Literary Techniques Used in The Storm by Kate Chopin
This short story was really straight forward until it got to the end, where it had a twist, which made me
pick the story to write on. Kate Chopin did an outstanding job using symbolism, but this novel is not
for all ages, if you know what I mean. How the setting, tone and theme all tie all together is what
makes the story different from the others.
Is the storm literal or symbolic? This particular question really stood out and really made me think and
analysis the story. For example, the question asks about the storm if it is literal or symbolic. The storm
is a super obvious symbol. It s involved in practically every element of the story. First off, it s the title.
Second, it plays a huge role in the plot, forming the beginning and the end of the story. It also plays a
really important part in the middle by bringing Calixta and Alcee together, pushing them into each
other s arms and giving them the time and space to get physical before the world outside returns to
normal. Also, the storm is a frightening occurrence in the natural world. Alcee describes it as a
cyclone (Chopin 2.13), while Bobinot can tell right away that its sombre, sinister, and threatening
(Chopin 1.1). Chopin describes the rain pouring down with a repetition and regularity that suggests
rain itself. Of course, it s when all that rain is coming down most passionately and brutally that Calixta
and Alcee are also getting more and more passionate; exploring their feelings for one another to the

Phantom Limb Pain Case Studies
The phenomenon of phantom limb pain (PLP) in patients with amputations has always fascinated
healthcare professionals. Although this condition is relatively easy to diagnose, the pathophysiology of
PLP remains unclear. It is estimated that greater than 80% of patients with a partial or total loss of a
limb develop phantom limb pain, which is a type of neuropathic pain that is perceived in the location
of the amputated limb. 1 Studies have shown that up to 75% of patients develop pain within the first
few days after amputation, however PLP can occur months or even years later. 2 4 It is primarily
localized in the distal parts of the missing limb.5 Risk factors for PLP include gender (more common
in women), presence of pre amputation pain, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems that different ways of stimulating the motor and sensory cortices can be effective in relieving
pain.17 Furthermore, since these interventions are significantly less costly than pharmacotherapy and

further with the added development of a home based protocol in which patients would be able to
actively participate and manage their PLP in the comfort of their own

The era known as the Industrial Revolution was a period in which fundamental changes occurred in
agriculture, textile and metal manufacture, transportation, economic policies and the social structure in
England. It is almost impossible to imagine what the world would be like if the effects of the
Industrial Revolution were swept away. Electric lights would go out. Automobiles and airplanes would
vanish. Telephones, radios, and television would disappear. Most of the stocks on the shelves of
department stores would be gone. Over the course of a century, Britain went from a largely rural,
agrarian population to a country of industrialized towns, factories, mines and workshops. Britain was,
in fact, already beginning to develop a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Great Britain grew to become the most powerful manufacturing nation, and the strongest
economically, in all of Europe. As Britain s finances grew and increased, citizens were able to move
up the social ladder in society, improving their financial and educational status. To begin with,
technological innovations, rising 3 productivity, and innovations in design and quality also made
British manufactures cheaper and more appealing in export markets. British exports to Europe and the
Americas rose dramatically and this in turn helped to pay for imports of food and raw materials which
Britain did not possess. These were vital for sustaining their industrial economy. Even though
education in the early 19th century was not compulsory and in most cases expensive, more and more
children received the opportunity to go to school. This was due to higher paying jobs becoming more
available for the average worker, meaning they could afford an education for their children.
Furthermore, another positive aspect of the revolution was that life expectancy increased drastically.
Medicine made great advancements; during the early 19th century scientists believed that disease
spontaneously grew from non living matter. In a series of experiments between 1857 and 1863, Louis
Pasteur, a French chemist and microbiologist proved this was not true but instead disease originated
from microscopic organisms. Once doctors knew

The majority of Americans choose the same issues as the most threatening to the nation. Invariably
among these one will see drugs as a major concern of most Americans. There is speculation that this is
due to a perceived association between drugs and crime (Inciardi 1). A good deal of the argument over
government policy towards drugs centers on the least unhealthy and most socially accepted of the
illegal drugs, marijuana.

Nearly 25% of Americans over the age of 12 admit to having smoked marijuana at least once in their
lifetime (Inciardi 167). There is a substantial portion of the American public which favors, in some
degree, the decriminalization of marijuana. There are also staunch advocates of the prohibition of
marijuana, many of them in our government. They each have effective arguments, often disagreeing

The faction in favor of full prohibition of marijuana has a strong set of arguments. Firstly, it argues
that by causing an altered state of consciousness, cannabis is dangerous. They argue that it is
biologically and psychologically addictive and that it the frequent use of cannabis has serious

there are several more effective legal drugs for the same purposes. They argue that marijuana is a

would run rampant. Some do not believe that it contains any medicinal value whatsoever.
Those in favor of full or partial decriminalization of marijuana have diametrically opposed arguments.

The American Of American Literature
American literature is the literature written or produced in the area of the United States and its
receding colonies. American literature as a whole is the written literary work, and the new England
colonies were the center of early American literature. American drama attained international status

The University Of New York
Allen and Dadgar (2012) utilized data on 22, 962 incoming college freshmen who were part of the
City University of New York s (CUNY) College Now program and had enrolled in a CUNY campus
within 15 months after high school graduation. This data was merged with data from the New York
City (NYC) Department of Education which included all high school students who had been peers of
the students in the College Now dual enrollment program. The NYC Department of Education data
included extensive demographic information and test score data as well information on institutional
differences between high schools. This rich data set enabled comparison between students who had
participated in dual enrollment and comparable peers who had not participated. In order to control for
preexisting differences that were not reflected in the data set this study used a quasi experimental
analysis called the difference in differences. The results of this study confirm the work of other recent
quantitative analyses which have shown higher GPA s and reduced time to graduation for dual
enrollment students as compared to their peers. The authors suggest that this study confirms the
importance of academic momentum by demonstrating that students who are able to gain credits before
starting college also earn more credits once they are enrolled in college. This study adds to the
evidence that dual enrollment has a positive impact on postsecondary GPA and time to graduation.

Evolution of Cars from 1970s-2010
The automobile industry is known for its constant remodeling and change from year to year. While
there are not generally drastic changes, there are societal and cultural changes that affect the styling of
the automobiles that companies produce. Beginning in the 1970 s there were drastic changes in society
that completely altered the products car companies were distributing, such as the change from muscle
cars to smaller fuel efficient economy cars. As time progressed the evolution of popular cars such as
the station wagon, minivan, and SUV, were influenced by social, political, and economic factors that
inevitable dictated the progression of the automobile industry. The 1970 s were an era of fuel price

The Ford Pinto memo ruthlessly calculated the cost of reinforcing the rear end, $121 million, versus
the potential payout to victims, $50 million (Worst Car s of All Time). In the United States, imported
cars became a significant factor for the first time, and several domestic built subcompact models
entered the market. European car design underwent major changes during the 1970 s due to the need
for performance with high fuel efficiency. Designs such as the Volkswagen Golf and Passat, BMW 3,
5 and 7 series, and Mercedes Benz S Class appeared at the latter half of the decade. The designs of
Giorgetto Giugiaro became dominant, along with those of Marcello Gandini in Italy. These smaller
more streamlined cars took over the market because of their fuel efficiency as well as its innovative
design for the time (Volkswagen). The Japanese automobile industry also flourished during the 1970 s
compared to other major auto industries. It took off during this time as its popularity and market
exponentially increased within a short amount of time. Japanese vehicles became internationally
renowned for their affordability, reliability, and fuel efficiency, which had a high appeal to American
customers due to the oil embargo. Japanese car manufacturing became proficient in

Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology
For many years, various forms of madness have been noted in every culture. Multitudes of theories, as
well as some myths, have been developed to explain such conditions. Society s opinion on what was
considered abnormal was based on such phenomenon as paranormal forces, the anger of the gods, the
influence of the moon, unstable personality, hereditary factors, and debauchery (Frude, 1998). History
shows that theorists continue to develop a variety of theories to explain psychological disorders. These
theories usually fall in one of three basic categories: mystical/supernatural (possession of ... Show

Scientific advances in mental illness were virtually nonexistent during the Middle Ages. Spiritual
causes ruled, and those with psychological disorders were classified as morally weak, or were accused
of forbidden practices, such as those associated with witchery, sorcery, and the devil (Damour Hansell,
2005). Witch hunts were more common at the height of the 14th and 15th centuries in Europe,
accusing many of the mentally ill of practicing witchcraft. Various attempts were made over the years
to encourage just treatment of the mentally ill, and various voices of reason attempted to eliminate the
stigma of abnormal behavior.
Emil Kraepelin began using scientific methods to classify mental disorders by concentrating on the
biological characteristics of mental disorders (Frude, 1998). Kraepelin s approach resulted in a closer
alliance between psychiatry and medicine, believing that a chemical imbalance was to blame for
schizophrenia and that a metabolism abnormality caused manic depression (Frude, 1998). Numerous
core concepts in psychology have influenced explanations of abnormal behavior. Models for
explaining abnormal behavior throughout history (historical relativism), and the principle of stressing
the assimilation of different perspectives (multiple causality) have helped differentiate between
predisposing and precipitating causes of abnormal behavior. The connection between mind and body
has become the most modern model, signifying that both biological

Health History 7p It is important for AGNP to take thorough health history in diagnoses and
management of cellulitis. AGNP should obtain information about past medical and surgical history,
current medications, allergies, nutrition, hydration, skin integrity, mobility, cognition, and behavior.
Risk factors for cellulitis include disruption of the cutaneous barrier and compromised venous or
lymphatic system such as leg ulcer, traumatic wound, dermatoses, venous insufficiency, obesity, and
previous history of cellulitis (Buttaro et al., 2013). AGNP should ask questions about location, onset,

How to Buy Used Patio Furniture
A hot summer day at a backyard barbeque with friends and family is an excellent way to pass the time.
Patio furniture can accentuate the look of any home, and is a great investment for those who love the
outdoors. Whether it is sofas, chairs, lounges, or tables there is an abundance of different styles of
patio furniture to fit individual preferences. Before purchasing used patio furniture the buyer may
want to consider budget, types of used patio furniture and the materials used in patio furniture.
Materials Used in Patio Furniture
Patio furniture is comprised of a broad assortment of materials. Each has its own advantage and
drawbacks for homeowners. Perhaps the most frequently used material for patio furniture is wood, but
more modern materials offer better resistance to the elements as wells as affordability. Outdoor patio
furniture ought to be weather resistant. However, if this is not the case, patio furniture covers is a good
investment. A buyer may adjust the patio furniture budget as necessary to accommodate possible
added expense. With the right selection, a buyer s patio can be just as comfortable as the indoor living
room.

The Issue Of Social Contract Theory
The social contract is not worth the paper it s not written on. Can social contract theory adequately
explain why we should obey the law?
In its simplest form, the social contract theory is the view that, within an organised society, people s
rights and duties are bound by a theoretical contract that they sign with the state. Through the use of
the contract, each member s political and moral obligations are clearly defined, which in turn intends
to benefit the society as a whole. I intend to argue that, as a member of such a civilisation, you have a
duty to obey the law and the rules of this contract in order to increase the liberty and well being of the
people.
Although many philosophers have offered their views on social contract theory throughout time, there
are two main theorists whose innovative ideas have ensured that this is one of the most contentious
debates in philosophy. On one side of the fence sits Thomas Hobbes who was the first modern
philosopher to introduce such an idea regarding the relationship between the people and the state.
Supporting the theory, he stated that if each individual is to feel secure within a society, there needs to
be some form of legislation created by the state ensuring that this is the case. On the other side sits
John Locke who, as an advocate of the state of nature, believes that a society in which the people act
based on their personal morals and their natural rights will lead to the greatest level of liberty.

Arguments Against Recurrent Stroke
Stroke is a public health burden that affects 15 million people worldwide (World Health Report,
2002), approximately 795,000 people per year in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, America s Burden on Stroke, 2012) and specifically in Mississippi, stroke is the fifth
leading cause of death (Mississippi Vital Statistics, 2014). Approximately 610,000 are first or new
strokes and approximately 185,000 strokes, nearly one of four, four; occur in individuals that have had
a previous stroke (Mozaffarian, Benjamin, Go, et al, 2015). Currently, there are more than 6.2 million
noninstitutionalized adults who have had a stroke in the United States (Faststats, CDC, National
Center for Health Statistics, 2012).

Physical activity can improve health and lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes,
depression, and some cancers, (CDC, 2014). Even though physical activity can reduce recurrent
stroke, stroke survivors are not engaging in physical activity at optimal levels to protect against
recurrent stroke. In their research, Boysen Krarup, pg. 148, (2013) found that following a stroke,
sequelae such as hemiparesis and ataxia may limit the trainability of stroke patients and lead to
decreasing levels of physical activity and physical performance. Historically, motivation to exercise
has also been cited in the literature as a deterrent and a facilitator to exercise among the stroke
survivor population (Damush, Plue, Bakas, Schmid Williams, 2007). According to a study conducted
by researchers Mohan, Wolfe, Rudd, Heuschmann, Kolominsky Rabas, Grieve, (2011) patients who
survive an initial stroke are at a significantly increased risk for future strokes compared with the
general population; a systematic review and meta analysis showed that the cumulative risk of stroke
recurrence was 3.1% at 30 days, 11.1% at 1 year, 26.4% at 5 years and 39.2% at 10 years.
Furthermore, recurrent strokes are more likely to be disabling or fatal compared with the first stroke

  • 2. Lincoln Movie Analysis Slavery was a massive issue many African Americans faced during the civil war. The film Lincoln, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a fantastic historical movie. The film focuses on the life of Abraham Lincoln during his second Presidential term. President Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States at the time. Lincoln was honored by many because he advocated for the African American people. Lincoln wished to pass the thirteenth amendment in the House of Representatives, which abolishes slavery. He felt as though slavery was immortally wrong. Slavery was an issue for all Africans American. Children were sold to owners for profit no matter the age. Being that the United States is contained with Democrats and Republicans. Lincoln success to passing the thirteenth amendment was a controversial issue for many. As discussed in class these groups were formed to give voice to ordinary people and to disable the Government from becoming tyrannical. Many people disagreed with the passing of this law. Many feared that the abolishing of slaves will affect many job opportunities for themselves. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which had freed most slaves as a fighter in the war but had not made slavery illegal. Lincoln faith towards passing this issue was very extreme. Slaves where page the bare minimum for their service in the war. However, in order for slavery to be abolished, Lincoln had to gain votes from Democratic and Republican parties. Some politicians see peace as a necessary precursor to the passing of the amendment, but others see the passing of the amendment as a step on the road to the end of the Civil War. In order to gain votes for many different regions, Lincoln had to ensure individuals, pay and job opportunities to be successful in the abolishment of slavery. • 3. The Circle Consequences Consequences of the Social Network Age By: Kelsey Kjeldsen Summary: The Circle The Circle is a novel that toes the line of the effects of too much technology and the possible great innovations that can come from it. Dave Eggers chooses to expose the possible negative effects of these innovations through the character Mae, who is a new college graduate that receives what she believes is a great job offer at a super tech company; The Circle. The Circle can be thought of as a combination of present day Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Basically, The Circle is a super corporation that is teetering on the side of monopolization of everything with the disguise of social good. Mae is drawn to The Circle by its fun campus that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We have fought for politicians and our governments to be more transparent through the years, and we have made strides to do that with the rise of technology. The government now shares majority of its actions online so that citizens can stay informed, and this is generally a good thing. But The Circle brings up and important issue of when is there enough transparency? When do we stop being transparent and let people have their privacy? As companies like Apple and Google continue to create new innovations our society will have to address these issues. In the future we should strive to create technologies that will reduce crimes, increase honesty in governments, and allow people to interact with each. We should not create these technologies at the cost of personal privacy or loss of real life interactions. We do not want a future where kids do not know how to interact on a playground or where adults cannot talk to each other meaningfully in person because they have lost social skills. We also do not want to lose our personal privacy, so that people feel embarrassed about their actions, and by making life more transparent we are also making it less enjoyable by being self ... • 5. The Battle over Safe Injection Sites Insite: The Battle over Supervised Injection Sites In the 1990 s there was an epidemic of HIV outbreaks in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Injection drug users were found to be the leading cause of this, and a public health emergency was declared (Fafard, 2012). The mortality and morbidity resulting from this increasing injection drug use became a major political issue. This resulted in the adoption of harm reduction by the government as one of their four pillars of their drug strategy (Fafard, 2012). Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use (Boyd, 2013). There was also no increase of users relapsing into injection drug use, nor did it negatively influence those seeking to stop drug use (Kerr et al., 2006). The research shows that Insite has not promoted increased illicit drug injection, but rather it has attracted individuals with histories of injection drug use. Another claim put forth by the Conservatives is that SISs are harmful to communities. They believe SISs create public nuisances, and threaten public safety (Broadhead, Kerr amp; Alice, 2002). Research on the other hand argues that SISs can address issues related to public. Since Insite opened the public has noticed less public injections, less syringe droppage, and less complaints about drug user nuisances (Potier et al., 2014). It also cleans up public environment such as streets and alleyways. Drug use is still an illicit activity and it takes place in unsterile environments such as behind dumpsters and shooting galleries. SISs provide sterile environments for users and are a lot safer than shooting up in the streets. This leads to less public injection and a better community environment (Potier et al., 2014). Local police data was also evaluated and there has been no increase in crime, violence, or drug trafficking around Insite. There were no significant statistical changes in rates of drug trafficking. • 6. Schenck V. United States Court Case Analysis Twenty Thousand Flyers In this essay, I will analyze John Mill s argument on freedom of speech in relation to Schenck v. United States court case. During the early 20th century, the U.S. government decided to join World War I. Hence, they held a draft, by choosing random male citizens who were in between the age of eighteen to forty five to fight for the country. At this time, Charles T. Schenck was the general secretary of the U.S. socialist party in Philadelphia in the early 20th century. He was against the U.S. entry into World War I and its implementation of a military draft. Thus, he distributed over twenty thousand flyers to U.S. citizens in objection against the draft process. Therefore, the government arrested him for violating the Espionage Act. President Woodrow Wilson wanted to stop the disloyalty of the immigrants, German natives, and people who opposed the government. Therefore, after a couple of months, the congress passed the Espionage Act. This act forced the people to support the government. After this act was ratified, speaking against the U.S. government during WWI became illegal. The U.S. government declared the Espionage Act to increase people s nationalism and to make them fully committed to the war. This act affected everyone living in the U.S. More than two thousand people were arrested while the Espionage Act was in effect. Although, most young men wanted to take a part in the war, others were living in fear. They were afraid to talk against the government and the war in public. This act associated a sense of a dictatorship with the government. The people of the U.S. were disunited to the point that some accused their neighbors of being unpatriotic just because of their ethnicity. • 7. Chivalry Bias Research Paper Chivalry Bias/Sentencing differences between male and female offenders Geisy Cobas Radford University It is a question many have, whether or not there is a gender bias in the criminal justice system of America, and even other countries. Are female offenders treated less strictly than male offenders by officers of the law and even the courts? This paper will review articles related to the topic of male and female offenders sentencing differences. The term chivalry means to treat others, women especially with courtesy, sympathy and respect. The chivalry theory, which comes from the mindset of treating women like higher beings, states that women offenders are treated more leniently than men by the criminal justice system. The research represented in this article examines the evil woman hypothesis, and examines sentencing discrepancies between male sex offenders and female sex offenders. The evil women hypothesis states that women offenders often receive harsher punishment than men in the criminal justice system, on the grounds that they have not only violated legal laws but also society s gender expectations. (Chesney Lind, 1984; Erez, 1992). However, research proves the opposite for female sex offenders. This article by the Feminist Criminology Journal used the National Corrections Reporting Program data to identify registered male and female sex offenders for the years 1994 to 2004, and the sentences they received for specific sex offenses. The data gathered revealed a significant difference in sentence length between men and women sex offenders. • 8. Christian Philosophy of Education Essay Christian Philosophy of Education As we go through our day by day lives in a very secular world, I believe it is very easy to question ourselves as Christian educators. We ask ourselves if we are doing our jobs exactly to God s calling. Are we striving to teach the truth? And with that, what is truth? According to Gaebelein in his book The Pattern of God s Truth, All truth is God s truth. As educators we are called upon to cultivate Christlike minds (Moreland). This is quite the task, especially given our surrounding circumstances and constant secular environment. Not only are we, as educators surrounded by this secularism, but our young, adolescent students are as well. So, how do we accomplish such as task of guiding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Christian educators, we are called to promote and support learning in those areas. True teaching is a sharing of realities, likening the teaching process and weaving connections between their teachings and understandings themselves and the world around them. If we do not make connections for the students to the world around them, many times these precious gifts graced upon them will be overlooked or passed by because the young minds may not be able to recognize them. Some areas of observation might be seen as open doors to see or perceive and understand something of God and His motion as reflected through the created world and the Bible. Other areas might be seen as open doors to respond, apply, express and practice in ways that are consistent with biblical values. When these areas are discovered and embraced, many times they can address the major developmental needs in the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional realms of the student s life. Identifying these areas is helping the students begin their walk with the Lord and their own calling. The teaching learning environment should be receptive to the nature of human nature as it was originally created in the image of God. This means it should acknowledge students as creatures of God (again, not simply as subjects in a room) by engaging and stimulating the full ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Stereotypes Impact On Society The Impact of Stereotypes on Stereotypes A stereotype may be negative or positive, but even positive stereotypes present two problems: They are cliches, and they present a human being as far more simple and uniform than any human being actually is (Kress). Stereotypes impact everyone, everyday, of every minute. It doesn t matter if they are good or bad, stereotypes are almost never right. They cause false expectations and often lead to debates, fights, and someone is always offended by them. Stereotypes can be defined as an image that a large group of people believes about a certain person or thing and they impact our society in many ways (Stereotypes). For example, in an interview with Guy Raz from NPR, Jamila Lyiscott says that I think that there s tension. I think there s a tension with fighting to not internalize some of what has been placed on you, especially during very important formative years (Raz, Jamila). This shows that stereotypes can cause people to develop some internal conflict, such as debating on whether or not the stereotypes that are placed on people are true. In another interview with Guy Raz, Maz Jobrani says, Look, stereotypes exist because there s always some truth to stereotypes. Not always, but often... (Raz, Maz). This means that there is a little truth in stereotypes, and this is most often what makes people believe them. If they didn t have any truth in them, they wouldn t exist. The two stories I m going to talk about The Weather of New England by Mark Twain and The Dog That Bit People by James Thurber are both strange humorous essay with a twist. Both stories have a central conflict, in The Dog That Bit People a family is burden with a dog that bites everyone, including the narrator. The Weather of New England talks about the weather of the new colonies and how spontaneous they were and the different forms they came in. Both humorous authors use style, tone, and perspective as a technique to tell their story and conflicts. Mark Twain uses style in The Weather of New England , when he uses words like sumptuous and Centennial to describe what s going on in the story. The author refers to the weather as sumptuous saying that there are splendid and lavish varieties of the weather of New England that cause a stranger to admire and regret or pity the weather. He also says that the brightest gems in the New England weather is the dazzling uncertainty. The authors uses words like dazzling to show his style. His style is sarcastic because he makes the uncertainty of not knowing what the weathers going to be as a good thing when really the unexpected weather is causing problems. • 12. Betrayal In The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe In the novel, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, betrayal takes place in many situations and it is almost always followed by forgiveness. Some of the motives behind the betrayal in the novel include fear, spite, temptation, pride, selfishness, and doing what is right. In C.S. Lewis s The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Lewis includes the recurring theme of betrayal and forgiveness. The first examples of betrayal are by Mr.Tumnus. After he first plans to betray Lucy, he then changes his mind and betrays the White Witch instead. When Lucy first enters Narnia through the wardrobe, she runs into a Faun who introduces himself as Mr.Tumnus. Upon finding out Lucy is a human, he befriends her and invites her to his home where he secretly plans to betray her and take her to the White Witch, who ordered all creatures of Narnia to report any sightings of humans. • 14. Analysis Of Ben Jonson s The Beloved Son Ben Jonson brings forth a memorable poem he has written in memoir to his beloved son, whom he lost at a young age. He begins this poem with a goodbye, which entitles him to feel responsible in some way towards this son s death. The speaker in this poem seems to be Johnson himself, considering his writing is deep and truthful which connects to his own feelings. The form of the poem is written in iambic pentameter, as a farewell to his beloved young son who died of a bubonic plague. Jonson s poem reaches new levels as he prepares himself to create a poem off his track of style, however, through love, envy and mourning, the author comes to a satisfying conclusion that he will no longer fall in love with something so fragile. In this particular poem, there are five groups, which are labeled as a foot: in each of these there is an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, which makes a pair of iamb s. As what he loves may never like too much. Perfectly exemplified, line 12 of the poem expressed the use of iambic pentameter as what he loves may ne ver like too much . The first foot begins with an unstressed syllable, what followed by loves which is the stressed syllable. In line three, Jonson stumbles a little as he addresses the loss of his son and he is off the pattern of the iambic pentameter. Bradbury refers to the mechanical hound with human like qualities, The mechanical Hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibration, softly illuminated kennel back in a dark corner of the fire house. The dim light of one in the morning, the moonlight from the open sky framed through the great window, touched here and there on the brass and copper and the steal of the faintly trembling beast. Light flickered on bits of ruby glass and on sensitive capillary hairs in the nylon brushed nostrils of the creature that quivered gently, its eight legs spidered under it on rubber padded paws (24). The hound is designed and programed to be the avenger for society, to look over and protect the people of this society. It is the Fireman s watchdog, although it looks nothing like a watch dog. The hound is the governments way to manipulate control over technology, a way to instill fear in society. Does modern society have cause for concern? The government still spy s ... • 17. The God s Script Short Story The God s Script, by Jorge Luis Borges, is representing the structure of knowledge through a dream of TzinacΓ‘n, the central character, and the narrative presence of the jaguar. Borges wrote the short story to describe TzinacΓ‘n s dream of the god s script, a language that would help him fulfill his destiny while he is imprisoned: his destiny is to be able to die in peace. TzinacΓ‘n is a magician of the pyramid of Qaholom. He can survive torture in silence; he will never lose hope. He knows he will not see daylight again besides the split second of light through the openings. However, TzinacΓ‘n s gods also give him hope for his destiny in prison. One of his gods is represented as the pyramid of Qaholom, that is burned and demolished. As he said, They struck down the idol of the god before my very eyes, but he did not abandon me and I endured the torments in silence (169). When he talks about the pyramid, he seems like he is more pleased that his gods are here with him instead of completely disappearing. He clearly stated that they are not abandoning him; even though he is being tortured, they do not leave his side. The impressions of the things that are happening to him are like the things that happen to his gods. TzinacΓ‘n senses that the things he thinks about represent furthering his knowledge, getting him closer to knowing his god s script. He knows of the script, but wants more structured knowledge of and the whereabouts of the script. As he stated, The fact that a prison confined me did not forbid my hope; perhaps I had seen the script of Qaholom a thousand times and needed only to fathom it (170). He reflects that it is only right that the gods are leaving access to the script to him to have as part his destiny. From the tone of the story, the knowledge he has of his gods ... The island nation of over 11 million, is relatively unknown, yet has played a major role in global history, global conflicts, and has a deeply interesting founding story. Founded as a country in 1543, there is a long path from its founding to where it is today. The discovery of Spalding occurred in 1439, 100 years before confederacy. The island was discovered by an expedition set out by the Walthford Family; an affluent family, who sailed the world looking for uninhabited, profitable lands. When the expedition returned to France, they reported that the island had large Quartz deposits in the Northern, mountainous side of the island. What I had learned made me question further some of the concepts I had pondered before...one of them being our need to be productive. A large part of the reason why I was having trouble settling in and simply enjoying my time in Banff was because I had an underlying need to be productive. Even though at a conscious level I no longer buy into and accept that our time needs to be filled with productive pursuits (not to be confused with purpose), at a subconscious level that belief was buried quite deep, and so my two minds were struggling with each other. We have been raised in a culture that highly values productivity, and that in itself wouldn t be such a bad thing if we hadn t taken it to extremes. He uses humor and an unreliable narrator to convey social satire in the novel to reflect the flaws of society toward in the antebellum south. The novel was published in 1884, just after slavery was abolished in 1865. Needless to say, racism was prevalent and although slavery was outlawed, colored people did not have equal rights to white people. African Americans across the country were still treated disrespectfully, beaten, and often murdered. With the outlawing of slavery in the south, racism was much more common there than in the north. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn takes place on the Mississippi River along Missouri and other various southern states. In the story, Huck Finn is a young boy who seeks adventures and does not wish to be civilized by the women in charge of him. He sets out on a journey to help free a slave named Jim, in a time period where slavery is legal in the south. Kate Chopin did an outstanding job using symbolism, but this novel is not for all ages, if you know what I mean. How the setting, tone and theme all tie all together is what makes the story different from the others. Is the storm literal or symbolic? This particular question really stood out and really made me think and analysis the story. For example, the question asks about the storm if it is literal or symbolic. The storm is a super obvious symbol. It s involved in practically every element of the story. First off, it s the title. Second, it plays a huge role in the plot, forming the beginning and the end of the story. It also plays a really important part in the middle by bringing Calixta and Alcee together, pushing them into each other s arms and giving them the time and space to get physical before the world outside returns to normal. Also, the storm is a frightening occurrence in the natural world. Alcee describes it as a cyclone (Chopin 2.13), while Bobinot can tell right away that its sombre, sinister, and threatening (Chopin 1.1). Chopin describes the rain pouring down with a repetition and regularity that suggests rain itself. Of course, it s when all that rain is coming down most passionately and brutally that Calixta and Alcee are also getting more and more passionate; exploring their feelings for one another to the ... As Britain s finances grew and increased, citizens were able to move up the social ladder in society, improving their financial and educational status. British exports to Europe and the Americas rose dramatically and this in turn helped to pay for imports of food and raw materials which Britain did not possess. These were vital for sustaining their industrial economy. Even though education in the early 19th century was not compulsory and in most cases expensive, more and more children received the opportunity to go to school. This was due to higher paying jobs becoming more available for the average worker, meaning they could afford an education for their children. The University Of New York Allen and Dadgar (2012) utilized data on 22, 962 incoming college freshmen who were part of the City University of New York s (CUNY) College Now program and had enrolled in a CUNY campus within 15 months after high school graduation. This data was merged with data from the New York City (NYC) Department of Education which included all high school students who had been peers of the students in the College Now dual enrollment program. The NYC Department of Education data included extensive demographic information and test score data as well information on institutional differences between high schools. This rich data set enabled comparison between students who had participated in dual enrollment and comparable peers who had not participated. In order to control for preexisting differences that were not reflected in the data set this study used a quasi experimental analysis called the difference in differences. The results of this study confirm the work of other recent quantitative analyses which have shown higher GPA s and reduced time to graduation for dual enrollment students as compared to their peers. The authors suggest that this study confirms the importance of academic momentum by demonstrating that students who are able to gain credits before starting college also earn more credits once they are enrolled in college. This study adds to the evidence that dual enrollment has a positive impact on postsecondary GPA and time to graduation. Academic Impact of Dual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology Abnormal Psychology PSY 410 January 30, 2012 Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology For many years, various forms of madness have been noted in every culture. Multitudes of theories, as well as some myths, have been developed to explain such conditions. Society s opinion on what was considered abnormal was based on such phenomenon as paranormal forces, the anger of the gods, the influence of the moon, unstable personality, hereditary factors, and debauchery (Frude, 1998). History shows that theorists continue to develop a variety of theories to explain psychological disorders. These theories usually fall in one of three basic categories: mystical/supernatural (possession of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientific advances in mental illness were virtually nonexistent during the Middle Ages. Spiritual causes ruled, and those with psychological disorders were classified as morally weak, or were accused of forbidden practices, such as those associated with witchery, sorcery, and the devil (Damour Hansell, 2005). Witch hunts were more common at the height of the 14th and 15th centuries in Europe, accusing many of the mentally ill of practicing witchcraft. Various attempts were made over the years to encourage just treatment of the mentally ill, and various voices of reason attempted to eliminate the stigma of abnormal behavior. Emil Kraepelin began using scientific methods to classify mental disorders by concentrating on the biological characteristics of mental disorders (Frude, 1998). Kraepelin s approach resulted in a closer alliance between psychiatry and medicine, believing that a chemical imbalance was to blame for schizophrenia and that a metabolism abnormality caused manic depression (Frude, 1998). Numerous core concepts in psychology have influenced explanations of abnormal behavior. Models for explaining abnormal behavior throughout history (historical relativism), and the principle of stressing the assimilation of different perspectives (multiple causality) have helped differentiate between predisposing and precipitating causes of abnormal behavior. The connection between mind and body has become the most modern model, signifying that both biological ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. The Issue Of Social Contract Theory The social contract is not worth the paper it s not written on. Can social contract theory adequately explain why we should obey the law? In its simplest form, the social contract theory is the view that, within an organised society, people s rights and duties are bound by a theoretical contract that they sign with the state. Through the use of the contract, each member s political and moral obligations are clearly defined, which in turn intends to benefit the society as a whole. I intend to argue that, as a member of such a civilisation, you have a duty to obey the law and the rules of this contract in order to increase the liberty and well being of the people. Although many philosophers have offered their views on social contract theory throughout time, there are two main theorists whose innovative ideas have ensured that this is one of the most contentious debates in philosophy. On one side of the fence sits Thomas Hobbes who was the first modern philosopher to introduce such an idea regarding the relationship between the people and the state. Supporting the theory, he stated that if each individual is to feel secure within a society, there needs to be some form of legislation created by the state ensuring that this is the case. On the other side sits John Locke who, as an advocate of the state of nature, believes that a society in which the people act based on their personal morals and their natural rights will lead to the greatest level of liberty. In their research, Boysen Krarup, pg. 148, (2013) found that following a stroke, sequelae such as hemiparesis and ataxia may limit the trainability of stroke patients and lead to decreasing levels of physical activity and physical performance. Historically, motivation to exercise has also been cited in the literature as a deterrent and a facilitator to exercise among the stroke survivor population (Damush, Plue, Bakas, Schmid Williams, 2007).
