How Much Power Should the American Government Yield
A dispute widespread amongst the citizens of the United States of America is on government, and
more specifically on how much power the government should yield. The philosophical question I will
be posing in this article is what should the government have the power to do . All the way to the left,
we have liberals who believe in a big government and a government that is involved with supporting
the people and curbing social inequalities and social hierarchy while supporting social equality. On the
other side of the spectrum we have right wing conservatives who prefer a government that is small and
call for reduced social spending, less regulation. In addition, they accept social hierarchy and social
inequality citing that social hierarchy and social inequality are inevitable. With this essay, I want to
focus on if the government has the power to invade your privacy. Currently reactions has been wild
ever since former NSA analyst Edward Snowden leaked the massive PRISM internet surveillance
program used by the NSA to collect data on citizens of the U.S. The philosophical question what
should the government have the power to do correlates with the NSA because the NSA is an institution
of the government, and should the government have the power to spy on its citizens without their
knowledge and without a warrant for the sake of national security. Foucault goes through the way
governments have attempted to control populations throughout history, and how power has exercised

Role Of Political Parties In Government
Political parties are important in government because they bring people together who have common
ideas, develop policies that benefit people from common interest groups that support them, and
campaign for their candidate to get the people to vote for them. They are used to train and nominate
the leaders the people want into government office. The main purpose of a political party is to join
people together that have similar views on government issues. These people with common views for
the same party join interest groups, which help connect people to their government. They work to
influence who gets elected and by belonging to groups like this, you have more power as a citizen.
Political parties serve multiple functions in the government

Examples Of Forgiveness In John Grisham s Bleachers
Forgiveness is sought out by everyone. Whether it is needed for one to have closure, for healing, or in
order to fully move on, forgiveness is essential. John Grisham s, Bleachers, is an epic saga of times
that require forgiveness. Throughout the novel, Coach Eddie Rake teaches his players not only how to
successfully play the game of football, but to also successfully conquer life. Some of Rake s actions
will require forgiveness from his players as will some of the players actions require forgiveness from
Rake. Forgiveness is key in life, and Bleachers could not prove that point in any better way. Bleachers
contains numerous examples of how forgiveness is needed in life, but there are three times that stand
out. The first is when Scotty Reardon is introduced as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Attitudes Towards American Indians
American Indians better known as the indigenous peoples of Americas. The first to occupy what is
now the United States of America were the first subordinate group to experience racism, genocide, and
discrimination. American Indians were the first minority group in America that were forced to
assimilate into western culture and forget their own cultures and traditions. Although the United States
does carry a more benign attitude towards American Indians as a minority group it is solely because
the violent history of American Indians is often overlooked and disregarded in history. In order for
American Indians to reach a state of equality there is a lot of work to be done in order to repair the
damage that was first caused to their sacred tribes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would agree that people in America do have a more benign attitude towards American Indians as a
minority group than they do towards others. Although people have more benging attitudes the
discrimination that American Indians face is often suppressed and overlooked in American History.
One prime example of this in history is the holiday Columbus Day which commemorates the day
Christopher Columbus an italian explorer arrived in America. The song mentioned in the lecture
Christians murdered indians. is a morbid song but it states the truth of the history of American Indians.
One line in the song states Columbus murdered children and now we have a holiday. (Corporate
Avenger, 2001) If columbus day celebrated the true columbus it would be celebrating a mass murder,
but American blatantly chooses to overlook the true history and meaning behind a holiday that mocks
Indian Americans. A I feel the biggest attitude people in America hold towards indian Americans is
suppression because of how much the discrimination they face is

Macwhirr s Use Of Figurative Language
The novella Typhoon by Joseph Conrad tells the story of a ship s captain, Macwhirr, and his voyage
across the East Asian sea. Macwhirr s incredibly literal, unimaginative nature is juxtaposed with his
second in command, Jukes, who uses figurative language. The juxtaposition allows the reader to see
how Macwhirr and Jukes react to the same problem: a typhoon. When faced with a dangerous typhoon
in the middle of the book, Macwhirr remains calm and reads articles from his books on dealing with
typhoons. He does not try to avoid the typhoon, much to the displeasure of Jukes, who sees the
typhoon as much more than just a bad storm. Jukes is terrified of the typhoon and preoccupies himself
with ensuring the chinamen, their cargo, are safe in their hold. The novel suggests the both characters
have flaws in their way of thinking, and their teamwork together in the novel is what makes the ship
survive. Conrad s use of figurative and literal language highlights the differences between ... Show

Essence Of Waqf In Quran And Hadith
Introduction
Essence of waqf in Quran and Hadith. In the verses of Quran, By no means you attain righteousness
unless you give 9freely) of that which you love, and whatever you give, of a truth God know it well.
(Al Imran, 3:92). And in Hadith, the Prophet said: When a man dies his acts come to an end, except
three things which is recurring charity, knowledge (by which people benefit), and pious offspring, who
pray for him .
Waqf is by no means an insignificant instituition in Islam. It potential can be discerned by the very
insistence on the non transferability of the ownership rights of the property. Once a piece of property
is given for a charitable purpose, the owner ceases to have any claims over it, because the property is
said to belong to no one but Allah. This concept is great importance for the development of the poorer
section of society if such waqf properties would be managed to generate inome for distribution or
even for further accumulation of assets. Waqf itself also can be regarded as an important economic
activities whilst at the same time ensuring that the benefits will accure to some specific sections of
society.

Why Bangladesh Came To Canada
Background of Bangladesh Bangladesh is a very weak and undeveloped country and has some of the
worst health and nutrition data. Bangladesh is a parliamentary democracy with 6 divisions and 64

Bangladesh to become its own independent country in the 1970s. Much of the nutrition, education and
economy is damaged because of the swell in population growth and political issues. in 2000 the World
Health Organization approximated 35 to 77 percent of the water in Bangladesh contains arsenic.

Founding Brothers Book Review Essay
Ellis, Joseph J. Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2000.
Print. The book being critiqued in the following review is Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis. Ellis
goal in writing this book was to define the political events and achievements that gained historical
significance because they framed the successive history of the United States. Ellis wrote on this
specific topic because he felt the need to argue the fact that the American Revolution and the greatness
achieved by the founding generation were the result of a collective effort. Ellis emphasizes that the
success of the United States, at the time of its formation, was not an inevitable conclusion. At the time,
it was an improbable result that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ellis describes a heated House debate in 1790 where slavery was reluctantly addressed. Benjamin
Franklin and James Madison s reactions are discussed. Ellis recognizes that in this moment,
compromise was absent and the divisions within the country were becoming increasingly conspicuous.
Ellis emphasize that making slavery a non issue eventually led to the Civil War. The next event
described by Ellis was the publishing of George Washington s Farewell Address. Ellis addresses
Washington s legacy and regard for future generations of America. In his next story, Ellis examines
how the relationships of 1776 turned into more sensible collaborations that would mold American
history. Ellis focuses mainly on the relationship between Jefferson and Adams as well as Adams
collaboration with his wife, Abigail. In his final piece of evidence, Ellis tells the story of the extensive
communication between Adams and Jefferson during the last fourteen years of their lives, restoring
their lost friendship after a political betrayal. Overall, based on the sources used, the history is
unbiased, although Ellis does acknowledge the sometimes exaggerated and biased writings of the
Founding Fathers and of those who were around them at the time. These occasional obscurities are
recognized and addressed by Ellis. However, the book is historically accurate and gives an objective
view of each situation. The claims made by

Research Paper On Kitty Genovese

Professor Kevin Lerner

Research paper
Selfish City s Life Kitty Genovese was an ordinary woman. One day, she was going home in the early
morning. When she arrived in her neighborhood at about 3:15 a.m. and parked her car about 100 feet
from her apartment s door, she was attacked by someone. She screamed out. Even though her screams
were heard by several neighbors, nobody helped her. She was seriously injured, but the witnesses did
not believe she was in need of help. There were several people that heard her screams but nobody
went out to help her. Kitty Genovese s murder is a dilemma. If human beings are basically benevolent,

He realized the car was parked where people could see it, so he moved it some distance away
(Gansberg, New York Times).
However, the psychiatrist judged Mosley to be normal. On June 11, 1964, Winston Mosley was found
guilty of murder. Though initially given the death sentence, the sentence was reduced to life
imprisonment after the trial went to appeal with New York s Court of Appeals. The murderer intended
to kill her. But there were thirty eight witnesses and nobody attempted to help her. It is unimaginable.
There was a psychological issue that is called bystanders. Most people when hearing about this sort of
thing react with horror not so much in the direction of the crime, but rather at the actions of the
bystanders. The bystander effect is a psychological phenomenon in which someone is less likely to
intervene in an emergency situation when others are present than when a person is alone. It is one of
those questions that can be asked over and over again. Why did no one call for help? It would not be
hard to pick up the phone; what kind of people could ignore such a thing? It is very miserable.
However, the fact is that the reactions of the bystanders are horrible. This lack of action is one of the
reasons why Kitty Genovese is taught in intro to psychology courses. She makes an excellent, though
graphic, introduction to the concept of diffusion of responsibility: a peculiar phenomenon of inaction
within a group of people. A person is much more

The Beach Boys Poem Analysis
Hopping into the car or closing the bedroom door, turning up the music, relaxing, and being alone.
Both Stephen Dunn and the Beach Boys wrote about their places of relaxation where they go to get
away from all the problems in their lives. Stephen Dunn, who wrote The Sacred, was married and later
got divorced. He could have written this poem when he was grieving that and did not want to interact
with anyone else. His car was probably the place he went to have privacy and quiet, at times like that.
Brian Wilson, who wrote In My Room for The Beach Boys, wrote the poem after battling drugs,
alcohol, abuse, and mental illness for years. The poem could have a lot to do with what he felt like

In The Sacred, the word car is repeated to emphasize that it is a place where people feel safe and show
how important it is for everyone to have a place to be themselves. A sacred place is peaceful and it is a
place where people do not have to be afraid. One student says that his sacred place is his car, and then
gives all the reasons why his car is so important to him (Dunn 2). Before each reason he repeats the
car, because he is pointing out and emphasizing that his sacred place is his car (Dunn 4). He can go
there when he needs time to think and he enjoys being in it alone (Dunn 6). After he says his opinion
about his car, the car [keeps] coming up (...) / [because] others kn[o]w the truth ha[s] been spoken
(Dunn 7, 10). The other students agree that their cars are a place where they can feel protected too.
They agree that the car is important because it is a great place to be alone, to forget about everything
else, and to just have time to oneself. Repetition in the poem In My Room is used in a similar way for
the same reason. After listing each reason why he feels secure in his room, the person repeats twice
that the room is his. By repeating that a total of six times, he stresses that his room is a special place,
where he won t be afraid because he can lock out/ all [his] worries and (...) fears when he is in there
(The Beach Boys 6 7, 12 13). His room is the only place where he feels safe. It is the only place that
he can have to himself without worrying about anything else, so it is really important to him. In both
poems repetition is used to draw attention to the place where those people feel most secure. It is used
to show how important it is for everyone to have a place like that for himself or

The History and Breakdown of the Glass Ceiling Essay
The History and Breakdown of the Glass Ceiling
The term the glass ceiling first came into use in 1986 when two Wall Street Journal reporters coined
the phrase to describe the invisible barrier that blocks women from the top jobs in corporate America.
(Glass Ceiling Commission, Successful Initiatives ). Since then the metaphor has also been applied to
the barriers of minorities. The Glass Ceiling Effect has been around for approximately 50 years. In my
opinion it is on its way out the door. Corporate Officers and Senior Management are noticing the
merits of women and minorities and doing something about it.
The glass ceiling, in its simplest form, is the theory that women and minorities do not advance into

The 1964 Act prohibits employers, unions, and employment agencies from discriminating against job
applicants and employees on the basis of race, sex, age, handicap, religion, or national origin. The law
prohibits discrimination in hiring, firing, discipline, compensation, and other conditions of
employment. (Reader s Digest, Know Your Rights ,1997). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is the
backbone of efforts to eliminate employment discrimination. (Glass Ceiling Commission.
Enforcement Techniques , 1993). The Act allows victims of discrimination in the workplace to
privately litigate claims. The Act started the advancement of women and minorities in the workplace.
Until this point women were in the workforce steadily, but not advancing. Minorities were also
present, but almost never in positions of visibility. Women and minorities in senior management were
almost unheard of. Employers are now forced to review and revise policy and procedures for hiring
and promoting within their respective companies. They are now accountable to the government and
liable to the employee in the event of discriminatory behavior.
At this time and since then, several agencies have been organized to enforce the Act and prohibit
discrimination. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission came into effect to enforce
antidiscrimination laws. The EEOC investigates allegations of bias, negotiates agreements after
charges are filed, and occasionally goes to

The American Dream Case Analysis
American Dream Case Analysis At 1981, The George A. Hormel Meatpacking Company cut wages
from $10.69 to $8.25 to claim the need to remain competitive. Companies threat workers that they
either close one plant and then open it at lower wage places or exit the business directly. Local unions
like P 9 firstly request that all the workers should stick to $10.69 an hour in ten or fifteen years that we
could call its target point. The company didn t agree, they asserted new member workers the company
recruited would be paid two dollars less for the same work, which is different from the P 9 decision.
Union P 9 refuses any concessions in the negotiation process at first, which proves it is an over
aspiring negotiator. It reveals its reservation point that keeping the $10.69 at least three years too early

The Midnight Riders
The story of the midnight ride is one of controversy, many wonder who was the one to actually deliver
the message, and which is the most important. All those who journeyed on the midnight ride were
equally important because its story lives in infamy. Charles J. Caes, the author of the article Midnight
Riders, argues that Samuel Prescott is the most important and underrated midnight rider. Caes also
argues that Prescott should receive more credit than the others who joined him on the ride. In actuality,
Prescott is not as brave and heroic as Caes makes him out to be. The things that Samuel Prescott had
accomplished before the midnight ride are not as impressive as Caes makes them out to be. Also, The
fact that Samuel was the one to complete the mission is not as important as the bravery it takes to even
go on the mission. Those that choose their fate are more heroic than those who stumble upon it.
Samuel C. Prescott possesses the same amount of courage as any ordinary man can. Caes chose to
describe Samuel Prescott s retreat from the British as heroic. He used words to create a valiant image,
such as, swashbuckling and daredevil like, in order to pursue his audience (Caes 42). When Charles J.
Caes story is stripped of its frills and opinions, this event is of Prescott fleeing from the British scared
like a gnat in a spider web. Samuel Prescott did not ride, a steed that that flies fearless and fleeting, as

The present day situation in Israel may be the most difficult political situation in world history. It dates
back to thousands of years before Christ, and deals with a large number of issues including political,
religious, and cultural issues. In order to understand the current day issues, we must first understand
the Biblical and historical issues. In this paper, I will first explore what the later books of the old

modern day issues. This was an interesting part of the Bible to research, because it is the part that most

The first book that I will discuss is the book of Ezra. Ezra lived during the time several hundred years
after the return of the Jews from the Babylonian exile, which would be around 400 BC. Ezra was a
priest, who was an expert in the law of the Torah. The first six chapters of the Book of Ezra describe
the return of the Jews from the exile in Babylon, which actually happened before Ezra was actually
living. The last 6 chapters deal with the restoration of Jewish life in Israel after the exile in Babylon.
In this time period, there were two restorations going on. The first dealt with the rebuilding of the city
of Jerusalem, even though the Temple had already been built after the return from exile. The second
dealt with the rebuilding of Jewish religious life in the postexilic period. Because he was a priest and
an expert in the law, Ezra was primarily responsible for the religious rebuilding. A major problem of
the time was that Jewish men were taking foreign wives, and at this time, Ezra prohibited mixed
marriages. The men who had married foreign women had to abandon them. There was also a covenant
renewal at this time.
The second book that I will discuss is the book of Nehemiah. It isn t known who came first of Ezra
and Nehemiah, but while Ezra was the religious leader, Nehemiah was the political leader. Nehemiah
began his work in Babylon around 445 BC,

Politics, Food, and corn: A recipe for change?
Americans today are no strangers to stretching every dollar earned in an attempt to live the American
dream. Most people work long hours and eat on the fly with very little thought to what, or where, the
food they have purchased came from. The reason food is so inexpensive has not been a concern to the
average American, but the article written by Michael Pollan The Food Movement Rising attempts to

America finds itself in. With obesity at epic proportions, and preventable diseases like ... Show more

Pollan goes on to say that the policies weren t always misplaced, and they have played an important
role until recently, so he does speak on both sides of the fence in regards to the old policies so readers
can make their own decision.
Pollan goes on to suggest that there are many different approaches to the food movement, and
although the movement seems splintered and sometimes the various factions [...] work at cross
purposes, the author uses some highly credible sources to show that despite its many offshoots, a
cohesion of the masses has taken root in the food movement (par.11). The author uses big names like
Troy Duster, who is a renowned research sociologist from Northwestern University, to help clarify his
point. Troy duster states that viewed from a middle distance, then, the food movement coalesces
around the recognition that todays food and farming economy is unsustainable, [...] that it can t go on
in its current form much longer without courting a breakdown of some kind. (Par. 13). The author then
clarifies his point but stating that the food system consumes more fossil fuel energy than we can count
on in the future [...] and emits more greenhouse gases than we can afford to emit. (Par. 14). Pollan

Women s Lack Of Respect For Female Characters
In Sherman Alexie s Flight, female characters are objectified and reduced to simple roles because their
primary purpose in the narrative is to display their sexuality for the gratification of the men. Before his
affair is revealed, Jimmy is seduced by his young lover: Jimmy sits on the floor. He grabs a piece of
fried chicken, a leg, and takes a bite. It s a little dry. So, okay, Helda isn t much of a cook. But that s
okay. That s perfectly okay. Because she turns on a CD player and starts dancing. She dances for
Jimmy! Dances for me! (Alexie 116).
The passage is a representation of the book s lack of respect for female characters because Alexie
relegates Helda to a place of little significance in order to create more space for Jimmy. ... Show more

It is even worse when the female characters are openly disrespected by the thoughts of the male
characters.
The value judgments of Helda through the descriptions reinforce the narrative s male gaze because
Helda s worth as a human is evaluated by her ability to provide others with food and sex. Helda, along
with most other women in this story, do not have complex emotions or backgrounds, and the fleeting
glimpses into their existences are nearly exclusively related to an interaction with a man. Since
women do not have a role apart from their male counterparts, how they are viewed is essential to
understanding the women themselves. Unfortunately, women are valued with confining and
stereotypically feminine attributes, like being sexy and good cooks. It is okay that Helda s chicken is
dry; she can be forgiven because she s hot when she dances for Jimmy. Jimmy and Zits perceive Helda
s actions as solely existing for their pleasure, hence the for, and they base her worth on her effect on
others, without any regard to her own individual humanity. The male gaze in this book is egregious, to
a truly absurd degree, because women are never allowed to be their own people; their entire existences
revolve around the presence, thoughts, and criticisms of men.
In addition to the content of the passage, the form also propagates the notion that women only exist to
bring pleasure to nearby men. Nearly every

Real World Monopolies
In the article that I have chosen to do it talks about real world monopolies in the United States today.
Monopolies are an industry in which there is only one producer. I choose this article because it was
very interesting and it really opened my eyes to the monopolies that are in the United States right now.
I never really paid attention to them being monopolies until now. There are four big companies that
have taken over five major companies in the last 10 years. Apple, Alphabet (which is owned by
Google), Amazon, and Facebook took the spots of the five largest companies by market capitalization;
they have all changed except for one, which is Microsoft. Exxon Mobil, General Electric, Citigroup,
and Shell Oil have all been replaced. I feel

Google s Performance Management?
Performance appraisals are tailored to deliver great results for Google s smart creatives. Senior vice
president of people operations Laszlo Bock offers great insight about the company s performance
management in his book Work Rules. Googlers first identify a group of peer reviewers for each
employee, which also includes co workers who are junior to the employee. Google abolished
numerical ratings in April 2014, so each Googler is now subjected to a five point scale fluctuating
from needs improvement to superb. Carried out semi annually, peer reviewers are asked to state one
thing the reviewee should do more of and one thing that they can do in a different way. After the
feedback cycle, managers come together to look at these peer reviews. The main goal is to prevent
bias in feedback by asking each manager to justify their decisions. Executives are informed about
possible hindrances to objective feedback, one of which is the tendency to exaggerate an employee s
most recent performance. By keeping these obstacles in mind, managers decide on the final evaluation
of an employee. Brief summaries of these assessments are shared semi annually and compared to a set
of examples to justify the evaluation. Employees are then informed of their compensation;

One of the main disadvantages of removal of partial denture is that it has a higher tendency to
accumulate plaque which affects the periodontal health of the abutment teeth. There are factors that
determine the retention of plaque by the denture such as the material of denture, oral hygiene of the
patient, or susceptible areas of plaque accumulation. The adverse effects of accumulation of plaque is

reliability. The process consisted of three stages: preparation, image transfer, and fabrication.
Altogether, there were 15 operations in the overall manufacturing process (exhibit 3). However, some
operations could be added or skipped depending on the design of circuit boards. In the SMOBC

The Birth Of A Moral Dilemma
The Birth of a Moral Dilemma in The Guest People choose every day in different circumstances and
degrees either small imperceptible one, such as the color of the shirt that they will wear, or huge
emotional and moral dilemmas like an abort or a high risk surgery. Nonetheless, there is always a
decision made that has its consequences (want or not). Albert Camus uses characterization to address
the importance of choices. The author uses the character of Balducci to show what happens when
people follow the rules without hesitation. For example, when Balducci arrives into the school to leave
the Arab with Daru, and Daru shows himself discontent with that unforeseen problem, he says, Those
are the orders (Camus). Balducci as a man of law must follow whatever thing is said to him, and he
will do it for sure without dubiety; in addition, Balducci remarks, [Y]ou must sign, that s the rule
(Camus). He has to obey all the requisites and commandments that his work dictates, and he can t
avoid doing this because he will break all the goodness that justice represents. Nevertheless, Camus
tries to point out if a person who only follow a guide or manual for every decision he or she made.
That person is, in fact, making no choices, and he or she does not have to face and think about what is
right or wrong because that person will search and do whatever is said in that guide. Particularly, in
this story, Balducci notes, You don t get used to putting a rope on a man even after

A Comparison of American and British TV Comedy Essay
A Comparison of American and British TV Comedy
Sit coms in television history have been one of the most important genres for expressing the values of
the middle and lower classes in our society, not in order to make fun of them but to express the best of
them in a softer way. For the general public today, the sit com is like the pantomime was for the
Victorians. British comedy still has a Victorian taste, but it is one that is only recognized and truly
appreciated by the British, which makes the British sitcoms less universal, and it does also express a
more localised British culture.
In reality, the appeal of American sit coms in relation to the British is clear. In the UK, the use of

Little Britain centred around two actors who created a series of sketches; different situations which
portrayed many peculiar stereotypes in English society, from a shoplifting seventeen year old girl
living in east London, to a disabled man in Birmingham on benefits who shamelessly uses his
generous best friend to help him with the basic daily tasks, despite the fact that he is perfectly capable
of doing these tasks himself.
These cultural issues make British sit coms funny to those who recognise the social types, but if it is to
be shown to an American audience the essential part of the funny elements are lost, principally
because it is not related to Americans in the same way it relates to the English. In American sit coms
the appeal is more universal; there are more general jokes and the use of class is less than in the UK.
Sit coms like Friends and Will and Grace have a more general approach and the dramatisation of
social issues is almost nonexistent. The jokes are directly related to the actors. When Will from Will
and Grace wants to make a joke he makes one, it is not his background and his social status which is
the joke but what he says. In Friends, the audience can observe the same phenomenon. Joe s jokes
have more to do with himself, or other members of the cast, than about his new girlfriend or the

Analysis of Market Structures
An Analysis of Market Structures and Their Related Pricing Strategies
Christa Jones
American Public University Systems
Abstract
Market structures influence a firm s behavior and profit opportunity and are therefore critical to
understanding how a market functions. The conditions that distinguish each market structure define
the level of competition observed within the market which in turn determines the profit level that can
be made. Because pricing strategies are intended to maximize a firm s profit, understanding market
competition is necessary when deciding an appropriate pricing strategy approach. The third section of
this paper gives the pricing strategy for a real world firm for each market structure.
An Analysis of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This section will provide a detailed analysis of the four market structures. Each analysis will describe
the characteristics that are found within a market structure and describe how these characteristics
influence a firm s behavior and profit opportunity. Perfect Competition
A perfectly competitive market is one where competition between firms is intense; the market is
considered concentrated. The characteristics of a perfectly competitive market include having a large
number of firms in the market, homogeneous products, no entry or exit barriers, no non price
competition or external costs or benefits, perfect knowledge, and zero control over the market price or
conditions. These characteristics create a condition in which the firms in a market act as price takers;
in other words, no single firm has any role in setting the market price and therefore must take their
prices from the industry.
Price taking is the primary condition of a perfectly competitive market. The two main characteristics
necessary for price taking include: having a large enough number of buyers and sellers in the market
so that each is only able to contribute a negligible amount to the total market supply and, secondly,
that firms produce homogenous products that are perfect substitutes for each other. In order for a
product to be considered a perfect substitute for another, each product must be standardized and
undifferentiated

Essay on Learning Writing Techniques
Over the past few months, I have learned several different writing techniques. While all of the
different types of papers were difficult to write, I believe that my writing skills have improved.
However, I did not understand all of the assignments, but I did try to do my best on all of them. I
should have used more transitional words. It is true that I have not had very much writing experience
and the writing process is difficult for me. Sometimes, I do admit, it takes days to complete one
assignment. I also have to write an essay several times before it sounds right. I did not know where to
place a comma in a sentence, and had quite a few run on sentences. I also learned how to do effective
research on a subject. Additionally, I learned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, I did not consider the amount of research that I needed to make an effective argument. In
the middle of the assignment, I wanted to abandon it. I am glad that I continued writing it though.
Research in the library labs was very helpful and informative. The techniques that I learned helped me
find web sites that were not biased. I felt that most of the research has creditable information. Many
people make web sites that are not credible and it is always good to select scholarly sources when
writing research papers for school. When one researches a subject, you should always keep good
records. I am a disorganized person, and very careless. Sometimes during the research process, I lose
information that I researched. Although, the paper was quite confusing at times, I felt I did a good job.
I am also quite surprised how well this paper turned out and believe, other people might confirm the
improvement of my essays. I have completed the paper. In order to accomplish this, I used
organization, better use of punctuation, and transitional words.
Furthermore, I did not understand an effective quote sandwich. The second assignment was difficult
for me. For example, when quoting someone, one should write something such as: Balko points out
that, he is upset with insurance companies (Balko 158 ). This effectively introduces who is saying
what. In addition, it is an example of a paraphrase, because I am using my own words. However, Mr.
Balko, failed to do this in his

Impact Of John Adams On Society
Johns Adams, the first vice president of the United States and the second president of the U.S.A., was
a prominent political figure during the beginning of the United States of America and did a lot to build

any other person in history by being involved in the creation of the American government, saving
America from crisis multiple times, and his involvement in foreign affairs. John Adams had important

With the war going bad for the Continental Army, John Adams was sent to France to try to convince
them to give America naval help, for the U.S. s navy was very weak. After attempting to gain naval
support Adams sailed to Holland to get a loan from the Dutch. He was successful in gaining the loan.
Throughout the end of the war, Adams would try to make peace with Britain. He was the main
negotiator in this action and would be successful in creating peace between the two countries. After
the US was favored to win the war, Adams was sent back to Paris to negotiate peace. Finally, in 1783
the Treaty of Paris was created declaring peace between the countries. Adams also had an impact with
immigrants, but the actions he took overshadow his entire presidency. He passed an unfavorable act
which is still controversial and argued today, the Alien and Sedition Act. These acts could ve been
passed in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Acts like these were passed during the Cold War. The
acts basically took away many rights including freedom of speech, freedom of press, lawmakers

Literary Analysis Of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
Michelle Ball Thompson
ENG 251 C01
Literary Essay
Oct 3, 2017
Title of Essay The short story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. by Washington Irving introduced the
character Ichabod Crane. Ichabod s name means No Glory which is the essence of the character
himself. Ichabod s legacy became a sort of an old wives tale by which he believed in so much he
ultimately fell victim to. Ichabod is a character that is a bit of an underdog that you feel compassion
for but inevitably conclude he received the outcome he deserves.
Ichabod Crane s appetite for the finer things in life and his fascination with superstitions brought him
to the town of Sleepy Hollow but ultimately became the source of his departure and the focus of one
of the towns ghost stories that he so enjoyed sharing in.
The physical description of Ichabod Crane was one of less than flattery. The narrator describes
Ichabod as tall but exceedingly lank, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, feet that might have
served as shovels, and his whole frame most loosely hung together (535). The narrator further explains
his huge ears, large green glassy eyes, and a long striped nose that looked like a weather cock, perched
upon his spindle neck (535). His physique was compared to that of a scarecrow (535). Ichabod s name
and physical description gave an impression of a comical character with an unfortunate hand dealt in
appearances.
Ichabod Crane moved from Connecticut to teach the children in Sleepy Hollow, which was a small
rural town (535). As the schoolmaster, he was well known in his community as he was a regular
visitor to the homes of his students. He would help with chores at the homes of his students and was
certainly up for a visit to students homes with pretty sisters and mothers who were talented cooks
(536). The school master is generally a man of some importance in the female circle of a rural
neighborhood (536). also, he was a kind of travelling gazette, carrying the whole budget of local
gossip from house to house (537) and was a perfect master of Cotton Mather s history of New
England Witchcraft, in which, by the way, he most firmly and potently believed (537). His preferred
past time was to visit with old Dutch wives of

  • 2. How Much Power Should the American Government Yield A dispute widespread amongst the citizens of the United States of America is on government, and more specifically on how much power the government should yield. The philosophical question I will be posing in this article is what should the government have the power to do . All the way to the left, we have liberals who believe in a big government and a government that is involved with supporting the people and curbing social inequalities and social hierarchy while supporting social equality. On the other side of the spectrum we have right wing conservatives who prefer a government that is small and call for reduced social spending, less regulation. In addition, they accept social hierarchy and social inequality citing that social hierarchy and social inequality are inevitable. With this essay, I want to focus on if the government has the power to invade your privacy. Currently reactions has been wild ever since former NSA analyst Edward Snowden leaked the massive PRISM internet surveillance program used by the NSA to collect data on citizens of the U.S. The philosophical question what should the government have the power to do correlates with the NSA because the NSA is an institution of the government, and should the government have the power to spy on its citizens without their knowledge and without a warrant for the sake of national security. Foucault goes through the way governments have attempted to control populations throughout history, and how power has exercised ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Role Of Political Parties In Government Political parties are important in government because they bring people together who have common ideas, develop policies that benefit people from common interest groups that support them, and campaign for their candidate to get the people to vote for them. They are used to train and nominate the leaders the people want into government office. The main purpose of a political party is to join people together that have similar views on government issues. These people with common views for the same party join interest groups, which help connect people to their government. They work to influence who gets elected and by belonging to groups like this, you have more power as a citizen. Political parties serve multiple functions in the government ... • 4. Examples Of Forgiveness In John Grisham s Bleachers Forgiveness is sought out by everyone. Whether it is needed for one to have closure, for healing, or in order to fully move on, forgiveness is essential. John Grisham s, Bleachers, is an epic saga of times that require forgiveness. Throughout the novel, Coach Eddie Rake teaches his players not only how to successfully play the game of football, but to also successfully conquer life. Some of Rake s actions will require forgiveness from his players as will some of the players actions require forgiveness from Rake. Forgiveness is key in life, and Bleachers could not prove that point in any better way. Bleachers contains numerous examples of how forgiveness is needed in life, but there are three times that stand out. The first is when Scotty Reardon is introduced as ... I don t want to get pointed at (Grisham 169) was Jesse s response. This shows how he truly did feel that he had let people down. When the time of the funeral arrives, Jesse does finally decide to attend the funeral. He is welcomed with open arms when he arrives at Rake Field. As Jesse walked in and put on his jersey, Someone applauded, then several people stood, clapping. Welcome home, Jesse, we still love you (Grisham 199). • 5. Attitudes Towards American Indians American Indians better known as the indigenous peoples of Americas. The first to occupy what is now the United States of America were the first subordinate group to experience racism, genocide, and discrimination. American Indians were the first minority group in America that were forced to assimilate into western culture and forget their own cultures and traditions. Although the United States does carry a more benign attitude towards American Indians as a minority group it is solely because the violent history of American Indians is often overlooked and disregarded in history. In order for American Indians to reach a state of equality there is a lot of work to be done in order to repair the damage that was first caused to their sacred tribes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would agree that people in America do have a more benign attitude towards American Indians as a minority group than they do towards others. Although people have more benging attitudes the discrimination that American Indians face is often suppressed and overlooked in American History. One prime example of this in history is the holiday Columbus Day which commemorates the day Christopher Columbus an italian explorer arrived in America. The song mentioned in the lecture Christians murdered indians. is a morbid song but it states the truth of the history of American Indians. One line in the song states Columbus murdered children and now we have a holiday. (Corporate Avenger, 2001) If columbus day celebrated the true columbus it would be celebrating a mass murder, but American blatantly chooses to overlook the true history and meaning behind a holiday that mocks Indian Americans. • 6. Macwhirr s Use Of Figurative Language The novella Typhoon by Joseph Conrad tells the story of a ship s captain, Macwhirr, and his voyage across the East Asian sea. Macwhirr s incredibly literal, unimaginative nature is juxtaposed with his second in command, Jukes, who uses figurative language. The juxtaposition allows the reader to see how Macwhirr and Jukes react to the same problem: a typhoon. When faced with a dangerous typhoon in the middle of the book, Macwhirr remains calm and reads articles from his books on dealing with typhoons. He does not try to avoid the typhoon, much to the displeasure of Jukes, who sees the typhoon as much more than just a bad storm. Jukes is terrified of the typhoon and preoccupies himself with ensuring the chinamen, their cargo, are safe in their hold. The novel suggests the both characters have flaws in their way of thinking, and their teamwork together in the novel is what makes the ship survive. In the verses of Quran, By no means you attain righteousness unless you give 9freely) of that which you love, and whatever you give, of a truth God know it well. (Al Imran, 3:92). And in Hadith, the Prophet said: When a man dies his acts come to an end, except three things which is recurring charity, knowledge (by which people benefit), and pious offspring, who pray for him . Waqf is by no means an insignificant instituition in Islam. It potential can be discerned by the very insistence on the non transferability of the ownership rights of the property. Once a piece of property is given for a charitable purpose, the owner ceases to have any claims over it, because the property is said to belong to no one but Allah. This concept is great importance for the development of the poorer section of society if such waqf properties would be managed to generate inome for distribution or even for further accumulation of assets. The book being critiqued in the following review is Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis. Ellis goal in writing this book was to define the political events and achievements that gained historical significance because they framed the successive history of the United States. Ellis wrote on this specific topic because he felt the need to argue the fact that the American Revolution and the greatness achieved by the founding generation were the result of a collective effort. Ellis emphasizes that the success of the United States, at the time of its formation, was not an inevitable conclusion. At the time, it was an improbable result that ... Ellis recognizes that in this moment, compromise was absent and the divisions within the country were becoming increasingly conspicuous. Ellis emphasize that making slavery a non issue eventually led to the Civil War. The next event described by Ellis was the publishing of George Washington s Farewell Address. Ellis addresses Washington s legacy and regard for future generations of America. In his next story, Ellis examines how the relationships of 1776 turned into more sensible collaborations that would mold American history. Ellis focuses mainly on the relationship between Jefferson and Adams as well as Adams collaboration with his wife, Abigail. In his final piece of evidence, Ellis tells the story of the extensive communication between Adams and Jefferson during the last fourteen years of their lives, restoring their lost friendship after a political betrayal. Overall, based on the sources used, the history is unbiased, although Ellis does acknowledge the sometimes exaggerated and biased writings of the Founding Fathers and of those who were around them at the time. These occasional obscurities are recognized and addressed by Ellis. However, the book is historically accurate and gives an objective view of each situation. The claims made by ... One day, she was going home in the early morning. When she arrived in her neighborhood at about 3:15 a.m. and parked her car about 100 feet from her apartment s door, she was attacked by someone. She screamed out. Even though her screams were heard by several neighbors, nobody helped her. She was seriously injured, but the witnesses did not believe she was in need of help. He realized the car was parked where people could see it, so he moved it some distance away (Gansberg, New York Times). However, the psychiatrist judged Mosley to be normal. On June 11, 1964, Winston Mosley was found guilty of murder. Though initially given the death sentence, the sentence was reduced to life imprisonment after the trial went to appeal with New York s Court of Appeals. The murderer intended to kill her. But there were thirty eight witnesses and nobody attempted to help her. It is unimaginable. There was a psychological issue that is called bystanders. Most people when hearing about this sort of thing react with horror not so much in the direction of the crime, but rather at the actions of the bystanders. The bystander effect is a psychological phenomenon in which someone is less likely to intervene in an emergency situation when others are present than when a person is alone. It is one of those questions that can be asked over and over again. Why did no one call for help? It would not be hard to pick up the phone; what kind of people could ignore such a thing? It is very miserable. However, the fact is that the reactions of the bystanders are horrible. This lack of action is one of the reasons why Kitty Genovese is taught in intro to psychology courses. She makes an excellent, though graphic, introduction to the concept of diffusion of responsibility: a peculiar phenomenon of inaction within a group of people. A person is much more ... • 12. The Beach Boys Poem Analysis Hopping into the car or closing the bedroom door, turning up the music, relaxing, and being alone. Both Stephen Dunn and the Beach Boys wrote about their places of relaxation where they go to get away from all the problems in their lives. Stephen Dunn, who wrote The Sacred, was married and later got divorced. He could have written this poem when he was grieving that and did not want to interact with anyone else. His car was probably the place he went to have privacy and quiet, at times like that. Brian Wilson, who wrote In My Room for The Beach Boys, wrote the poem after battling drugs, alcohol, abuse, and mental illness for years. The poem could have a lot to do with what he felt like while he was going through everything. He probably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Sacred, the word car is repeated to emphasize that it is a place where people feel safe and show how important it is for everyone to have a place to be themselves. A sacred place is peaceful and it is a place where people do not have to be afraid. One student says that his sacred place is his car, and then gives all the reasons why his car is so important to him (Dunn 2). Before each reason he repeats the car, because he is pointing out and emphasizing that his sacred place is his car (Dunn 4). He can go there when he needs time to think and he enjoys being in it alone (Dunn 6). After he says his opinion about his car, the car [keeps] coming up (...) / [because] others kn[o]w the truth ha[s] been spoken (Dunn 7, 10). The other students agree that their cars are a place where they can feel protected too. They agree that the car is important because it is a great place to be alone, to forget about everything else, and to just have time to oneself. Repetition in the poem In My Room is used in a similar way for the same reason. After listing each reason why he feels secure in his room, the person repeats twice that the room is his. By repeating that a total of six times, he stresses that his room is a special place, where he won t be afraid because he can lock out/ all [his] worries and (...) fears when he is in there (The Beach Boys 6 7, 12 13). His room is the only place where he feels safe. It is the only place that he can have to himself without worrying about anything else, so it is really important to him. In both poems repetition is used to draw attention to the place where those people feel most secure. It is used to show how important it is for everyone to have a place like that for himself or ... The Act allows victims of discrimination in the workplace to privately litigate claims. The Act started the advancement of women and minorities in the workplace. Until this point women were in the workforce steadily, but not advancing. Minorities were also present, but almost never in positions of visibility. Women and minorities in senior management were almost unheard of. Employers are now forced to review and revise policy and procedures for hiring and promoting within their respective companies. They are now accountable to the government and liable to the employee in the event of discriminatory behavior. All those who journeyed on the midnight ride were equally important because its story lives in infamy. Charles J. Caes, the author of the article Midnight Riders, argues that Samuel Prescott is the most important and underrated midnight rider. Caes also argues that Prescott should receive more credit than the others who joined him on the ride. In actuality, Prescott is not as brave and heroic as Caes makes him out to be. The things that Samuel Prescott had accomplished before the midnight ride are not as impressive as Caes makes them out to be. Also, The fact that Samuel was the one to complete the mission is not as important as the bravery it takes to even go on the mission. Those that choose their fate are more heroic than those who stumble upon it. Samuel C. Prescott possesses the same amount of courage as any ordinary man can. The first six chapters of the Book of Ezra describe the return of the Jews from the exile in Babylon, which actually happened before Ezra was actually living. The last 6 chapters deal with the restoration of Jewish life in Israel after the exile in Babylon. In this time period, there were two restorations going on. The first dealt with the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem, even though the Temple had already been built after the return from exile. The second dealt with the rebuilding of Jewish religious life in the postexilic period. Because he was a priest and an expert in the law, Ezra was primarily responsible for the religious rebuilding. A major problem of the time was that Jewish men were taking foreign wives, and at this time, Ezra prohibited mixed marriages. The men who had married foreign women had to abandon them. The value judgments of Helda through the descriptions reinforce the narrative s male gaze because Helda s worth as a human is evaluated by her ability to provide others with food and sex. Helda, along with most other women in this story, do not have complex emotions or backgrounds, and the fleeting glimpses into their existences are nearly exclusively related to an interaction with a man. Since women do not have a role apart from their male counterparts, how they are viewed is essential to understanding the women themselves. Unfortunately, women are valued with confining and stereotypically feminine attributes, like being sexy and good cooks. It is okay that Helda s chicken is dry; she can be forgiven because she s hot when she dances for Jimmy. Jimmy and Zits perceive Helda s actions as solely existing for their pleasure, hence the for, and they base her worth on her effect on others, without any regard to her own individual humanity. The male gaze in this book is egregious, to a truly absurd degree, because women are never allowed to be their own people; their entire existences revolve around the presence, thoughts, and criticisms of men. For the general public today, the sit com is like the pantomime was for the Victorians. British comedy still has a Victorian taste, but it is one that is only recognized and truly appreciated by the British, which makes the British sitcoms less universal, and it does also express a more localised British culture. These cultural issues make British sit coms funny to those who recognise the social types, but if it is to be shown to an American audience the essential part of the funny elements are lost, principally because it is not related to Americans in the same way it relates to the English.
