This document discusses various methods for teaching reading skills and speed reading techniques. It defines speed reading as rapidly recognizing phrases or sentences rather than individual words. Typical reading speeds are around 250 words per minute for most people. There are a few common speed reading methods, including the pointer method of running a finger under the lines of text, the tracker and pacer method of underlining lines with a pen, and scanning or previewing passages by identifying key words and sentences. Practicing these techniques can help improve reading speeds.
3. The process of rapidly recognizing and absorbing phrases or sentences on a page all
at once, rather than identifying single word.
Most people read at an average rate of 250 words per minute (wpm).
Slow readers get easily discouraged.
Tend to stumble on unfamiliar words and fail to grasp the general meaning of the
passage.
4. All speed reading techniques avoid “hearing” words in your head.
Focus on skimming lines or group of words.
There are a few methods to help the students speed read:
Give students a passage to read and ask to time themselves.
Preparing a conversion table, which will tell them what their reading speed is,
based on the number of words they read in the given time.
5. Focus on blocks of words rather than on individual ones.
Relax your face and soften you gaze on the page. Stop seeing words as individual
units. Help skip words and read faster.
When approaching the end of a line, allow your peripheral vision to take your eye
to the final set of words.
Help to stop pauses in the reading, meaning you can scan through the text easily
and quickly.
6. There are three methods to boost reading speed:
1. Pointer Method
2. Tracker and Pacer Method
3. Scanning (previewing) Method
7. Evelyn Nielsen Wood was one of the pioneers of speed reading.
Utah School teacher, who invented this technique in 1950s.
Running your finger or a piece of card under the lines of text as you go along.
Evelyn could read up to 2700 wpm.

10. Similar to Pointer Method, run a pen underneath the line reading.
Hold a pen, with its cap still on, and underline or track each line as you read it,
keeping your eye above the tip of the pen.
Help improve the focus on the words and increase reading speed.
Do not spend more than a second on one line.
An advantage of the Pointer and Tracker-and-Pacer methods is that they should
reduce your need to skip back and re-read sentences.

12. Moving your eyes quickly down the page – often down the center – and identifying
specific words and phrases as you go.
Key sentences (often the first sentence of each paragraph), names, numbers, or
trigger words and ideas.
Eye will land on the important information, and not the whole text.
Apps such as Spritz and Spreeder use techniques like "Rapid Serial Visual
Presentation" to train you to process information more quickly.
