The Napoleonic Er The Causes Of The Napoleonic Era
The Napoleonic Era can be said to have begun with the Coup of 18 Brumaire, which overthrew the
Directory (and is often believed to have brought the French Revolution to a close), and established
the French Consulate, along with the appointment of Napoleon as First Consul in the winter of
1779. Preceding this time, the French were fighting a loosing battle against the Ottomans
throughout Egypt, Greater Syria, and the Levant. Once Napoleon became the de facto ruler of
France, he began massive reforms. The spread of citizens rights into law began, representative
assembly took hold, religious toleration became the norm, the country was re organized into
departments, and the metric system was invented. Upon becoming First Consul, Napoleon

At this time, France also sold their North American continental holdings to the Americans in the
Louisiana Purchase . Britain cancelled the treaty in May 1803, and war resumed. Europeans
formed seven coalitions between 1792 1815 to defeat French forces. In May of 1804, Bonaparte
had himself declared Emperor, and crowns himself in the company of a (bribed) pope. The
Code Civil became Code Napoleon and Napoleon codified French law into statutes. In 1805, the
bulk of the most noteworthy Napoleonic victories of the Era begin to occur, such as those of
Ulm, Trafalgar (including the death of Lord Nelson), and Austerlitz, resulting in the defeat of the
Holy Roman and the Russian Empire. The Confederation of the Rhine was created at this time
and initially included 16 member states, with Saxony and Westphalia joining later. In 1806,
British marines (temporarily) seize Buenos Aires from Spain, and are expelled by local militias in
1807. Napoleon also begins naming family member to various governmental posts in earnest,
including Joseph to the post of King of Naples. During this time, Prussia joins Britain and Russia,

Homelessness Among American Veterans Research
Homelessness Among American Veterans Research Paper An issue that has been around for
decades which still remains in the United Sates today is homelessness among veterans. Vanessa
Turner has a story that needs to be heard by many. As a homeless veteran, Turner joined the U.S.
military in 1997 and later, proudly advanced to the rank of a sergeant. In 2003, Turner suffered
from a traumatic injury while serving in Iraq. In suffocating 130 degrees fahrenheit heat, Turner
fell into a coma and nearly died of heart failure. Immediately, she was brought to the Walter Reed
Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., treated, and released with a pending medical discharge.
After Turner s release, both her and her daughter had no residency and no permanent health care
plan. In attempt to make a stable living to sustain herself and her daughter, they often temporarily
moved between family to friends apartments, never actually having a place to call home. In an
effort to receive help from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center was very frustrating; she was told
she had to wait months simply to get medical attention. Again when Turner requested for her
belongings to be shipped back from her unit s base in Germany, they told her she had to obtain
transportation to Germany at her own expense, which she was unable to do because of the amount
of money that it would cost, unfortunately resulting in not getting her property back. Vanessa
Turner is just one of many homeless veterans who are

Getting to Yes Report
Negotiations Getting to Yes is about improving your negotiation skills. First, it goes through the
disadvantages of the classic positional negotiating tactic that involves taking a stance and slowly
reaching an agreement after each party makes multiple concessions often ending with less than
anyone wants and a poor relationship between parties. After that, it discusses principled negotiation
which, in short, is focused on separating the people from the problem, focusing on the interests of
the parties and not their positions, inventing multiple options that look for mutual gains through
brainstorming activities, and basing the end result on objective standards. This is the bulk of the
book and there are many examples ranging from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was a lot of talk about thinking about the negotiation objectively. This will require me to
prepare for the meeting/phone call by getting multiple ads for similar vehicles, invoices for very
recent repairs like brand new brakes, tires, and significant engine repairs that I wouldn t have
paid for if I knew my car was going to be totaled 3 months later, and information on the Kelly
Blue Book value of the car. It was mentioned many times that preparation can be the key to
success. After the adjuster tells me what my car is worth, I will try to direct the conversation by
asking how they came up with that specific number, and if they have taken into account all the
extra options and recent repairs on the car. I will do my best not to yield to pressure, to assure
the adjuster that I appreciate that they are doing their job (hopefully separating the person from
the position), repeat back their point of view in order to understand their position entirely,
clearly state that I want a fair price based on objective criteria, ask the adjuster if they would sell
their car for an amount that was derived from the methods used to price my car, and I will not
get angry, decide on a price in the first meeting, or attack their position. When buying my new
car, I will prepare ahead of time to know the costs of the cars I m looking at and always keep in
mind that my BATNA will be to just go to another dealership. In the future, I

Conceptual Data Models for Database Design
Database Design Process
The database design process consists of a number of steps listed below. We will focus mainly on
step 2, the conceptual database design, and the models used during this step.
Step 1: Requirements Collection and Analysis в–Є Prospective users are interviewed to understand
and document data requirements в–Є This step results in a concise set of user requirements, which
should be detailed and complete. в–Є The functional requirements should be specified, as well as
the data requirements. Functional requirements consist of user operations that will be applied to
the database, including retrievals and updates. в–Є Functional requirements can be documented

For example, if you wish to store the Company Location, unless you will use the atomic information
such as Postal Code, or City separately from the other Location information (Street Address etc)
then there is no need to subdivide it into its component attributes, and the whole Location can be
designated as a simple attribute.
в–Є What are examples of other composite attributes?
Single Valued vs. Multi valued Attributes
в–Є Most attributes have a single value for each entity, such as a car only has one model, a student
has only one ID number, an employee has only one data of birth. These attributes are called single
valued attributes. в–Є Sometimes an attribute can have multiple values for a single entity, for
example, a doctor may have more than one specialty (or may have only one specialty), a customer
may have more than one mobile phone number, or they may not have one at all. These attributes are
called multi valued attributes. в–Є Multi valued attributes may have a lower and upper bounds to
constrain the number of values allowed. For example, a doctor must have at least one specialty, but
no more than 3 specialties.
Stored vs. Derived Attributes
в–Є If an attribute can be calculated using the value of another attribute, they are called derived
attributes. в–Є The attribute that is used to derive the attribute is called a stored attribute. в–Є
Derived attributes are not stored in the file, but can be derived when needed from the stored

Lessons from The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett Essay
The Maltese Falcon is a novel written by Dashiell Hammett in 1929. It was originally published
by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., New York, in 1930. Readers and critics see this book as one of the best
detective novels ever written, but they also see it as a great piece of literature. With 217 pages, it
is an easy read but is a stimulating story.
The main character of this book is a private investigator named Sam Spade. The story revolves
around him being lied to and interrogated constantly by people who are hiring him to find the
statue called The Maltese Falcon. It was believed to have priceless jewels and other forms of
wealth within the inside of the ordinary statue. The conflict shows up after several different events
mentioned in the story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

also looking for the bird (The Maltese Falcon). So Spades partner, Miles Archer, takes the
responsibility of tailing Thursby. Unfortunately, Thursby and Archer are both later found dead.
So the police soon start questioning Spade on suspicion he had something to do with it and at
the same time Spade is questioning Miss Wonderly, whose real name is actually Brigid O
Shaughnessy. After he gets what he hopes is the total truth, another man named Joel Cairo comes
out and asks Spade to find the bird for $10,000 and after that an even more serious man named
Casper Gutman offers Spade more than everyone else to get the bird. Spade is the only one that
knows where it is and is still being questioned by the police. When the morning finally comes
when Spades secretary picks up the falcon from the train station Gutman above all is excited. He
starts scratching away at the enamel which should have gold underneath but he soon enough
realizes that there is nothing but lead underneath it. Disappointed he offers everyone to go out and
get it back from the Russian Constantinople who switched the real one. Cairo accepts the offer and
they leave. Immediately Spade phones the police and gives them all the names of the murderers
and everyone involved. They catch them all and Spade then turns in Brigid even though they had
become so close.

Immanuel Kant And The Kant Essay
Immanuel Kant Lying Chiyane Peterson MCCC Ethics MW 1:30pm Parviz Dehghani Lying the
one form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states
that lying is morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him just assumed
that anyone who lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some
benefit. (Landau,pp.171) This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a
certain benefit from the lie rather than the truth. It is similar to if you play a game of truth or
dare, some rather pick a dare because it would release them from having to tell the truth.
However, those who do pick truth still have a chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People
lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you lie to benefit someone or something else, it
would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the consequences. If you lie but have a
good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you still lied no matter the
consequence that a lie is a lie. While lying, we accuse others for not being transparent. While
being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere. (Dehghani,Ethics) We know how it
feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the person will
be truthful. We rather be surrounded by truthful people constantly despite all the lies that some
people tell. No

Judicial Originality And The Legal System
Topic 2
By: Raylen White
Judicial originality is the most fundamental principle in the legal system. Judicial originality to
me means being able to make a decision based off the effects. If a judge has had a case in the
past similar to a current one, the judge can base his current decision using the same discretion or
rule he used before. Dworkin wrote a paper about this, he argues that judges should not be able to
create laws through the effect of their decisions. He has two arguments about why judicial
originality is not a good thing for society. In this paper I will talk about these arguments and if
Dworkin has the right to claim that this argument has no force against it. The first argument he had
against judicial originality was that a community should be govern by men and women who are
elected by and responsible to the majority. This means that most judges are not elected by a wide
spread of the community, and if they could make their own laws they would not benefit the
community. It is important that the community has a say on what should be a law and what
should not be a law. If judges were to make laws that would be a contradiction to the theory of
separation of powers. It would seem to be that judges are analogous to the legislature, which in fact,
they are not because the legislature is elected. Policy decisions must therefore be made through the
operation of some political process designed to produce an accurate expression of the different
interest that

Upper East Side Comparison
Back in 2012, I started working a full time job on the Upper East Side, commuting from the Bronx
to Manhattan every day. Hunter college neighborhood, situated in Manhattan s upper eastside is
quite different from the South Bronx neighborhood. Although both neighborhoods are similar in
size and diversity, the socioeconomic composition is very different. The Upper East Side on one
hand is famous for being one of the richest neighborhoods in New York. Consisting of the city s
major tourist attraction and numerous businesses, it is a high economic neighborhood. The south
Bronx on the other hand, is famously known for having the city s highest crime rates. The per

two neighborhoods consist of people from different parts of the world. They both use the subway
to get to and from work, seeing each other daily. Similarly, each neighborhood is built on a city
like manner to accommodate diversity. There is less communications and interactions in the Upper
East Side neighborhood due the large amount of businesses. Because people are trying to get in and
out quickly, bonds are formed. This makes it impossible to formed relationships among community
members. Also, most of the people in the neighborhood have home caretaker to run errands because
they are busy with their jobs. In The South Bronx, relationships are formed among community

The second letter came on the 24th of July. This next letter taunted Poirot and told him that the
second murder was going to take place in Bexhill on Sea, the next day. Poirot and Hastings had a
pretty good idea that the person to be killed would be one with the last name starting with B, but
they could not be sure.
In the morning they received a report that a murder took place at about midnight. The victim was
Elizabeth Barnard. She had been killed on the beach and another A.B.C. was found near her. There
had been no reports of her missing until the next morning. They now knew that they were up
against a homicidal murderer.

They received a third letter on the 30th. Once again it made fun of Poirot and said that the next
murder would take place on the 30th at Churston. They rushed to get to Churston, but it was too
late. Sir Carmichal Clarke had been killed. There again were no witnesses to this murder.
The fourth letter said that there would be a murder at Doncastor. All of the closest friends or
family were gathered with them there. They attended a big concert because that s where they

reconstruction policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for blacks. At one
point the KKK had a total of 4 million members and diminished to a mere 15 hundred, after a span
of a few years. Their policies ended up putting them on a spot light with law enforcement and CIA
and other government official groups. Now they are divided up into several different groups. Some

It is not the view of the government or anyone else. This is simply the view and opinion of one
person. We cannot limit or restrict a person for expressing their personal belief just because we
don t agree with what they are saying. If that was the case, no one would agree or get along. We
all come from different backgrounds, different religions, ethnic groups, social upbringings, etc.
We have different beliefs so therefore will not agree with everything that someone else believes
in. Such in a way like the KKK itself. Within the own KKK there are splits in the group that are
divided into other groups, such as the separation of the IKA. The IKA are represented by militia
group, which are soldiers, are ready for a war and might even encourage it or start it. In the
video there was a rally being held where the Klan was trying to rally more members and spread
the news of how immigrants are stealing the jobs of the white folks. Another charter of the Klan
showed up but was not allowed to attend because they were associated with the neo Nazi
members and promote violence. They are known for burning the cross and swastika side by
side. The Klan that was holding the rally didn t want them to be apart or attend the rally, even
though they were active members of the KKK. It just goes to show there isn t even agreement
within the Klan itself. We should be allowed public express our opinion despite what someone
else feels about the subject. Like mentioned above, we do come from different backgrounds and
cultures, so we are raised on different beliefs of right and wrong. Some things are taught and
others are learned. We should be able to as human beings and as citizens of the United States be
able to share our reason as to why we support or belief in what we are voicing our opinions about.
We are necessarily always trying to recruit people to joining our culture or group, like the Klan
was doing at their rally they held. We are simply trying to

The Epic of Beowulf
Beowulf is the oldest anglo saxon poem written in English. The poem describes the heroic deeds
of Beowulf in his fight against monsters. Even if the events narrated in the poem take place in
Denmark, the poem was transmitted by oral language between the anglo saxon even 200 years after
its creation. Anglo saxons did not consider themselves british, but vikings, and their heroes were
always from Scandinavia.
The author of Beowulf is anonymous. The original poem was written on sheep tanned leather.
Beowulf is not only the story of a young man that gains glory against monsters or of an old king
that dies fighting a dragon, but it is the story of a brave man who, once young and invincible,
chooses to fight against the dragon though he knows that he s going to have a tragic end.
Beowulf meets all the features of an epic poem: it is a long narration of a national hero ( he is
recognized, rewarded and glorified by the king himself and his people), his travel on the sea, his
adventures and the heroic episodes he s the central figure in. Moreover, the main protagonist,
Beowulf, is a brave young man, like Gilgamesh, Achilles or Hercules, with more than human
strength and wiser, more courageous than others. Unlike the other epic heroes we have studied
untill now, Beowulf is giving us a detailed self description when he meets the king : In my youth I
have done many glorious deed.
The episodes of the poem are moving ahead step by step; this literary procedure is called

Consider The Lobster By David Foster Wallace Analysis
American Novelist, essayist and short story author David Foster Wallace uses his essay Consider
the Lobster to tell the reader about his thought provoking visit to the Maine Lobster Festival.
Wallace wrote this essay to show his thought process dealing with the moral ambiguity of cooking
lobster, and the research he did to further understand the subject. He primarily uses an informational
tone with a heavy emphasis on pathos. He does a fairly good job remaining unbiased and showing
the counterarguments.
Wallace was sent to the Maine LobsterFestival by Gourmet Magazine, he was tasked simply to
write about his experience there. He took this as an opportunity and decided that the risk he was
taking in posing this question to the readers of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following this point he points out that perhaps lobsters understand pain but they don t dislike it
and how pain is not distressing them (Wallace 63). He reinstates the fact that there is a clear
difference in pain as a purely neurological event from pain as actual suffering , the latter requiring
an emotional component (Wallace 36). Later on he states that this means that although lobster s
experience pain it is not a struggle based on discomfort but more of a preference. More akin to
you preferring to sit in a certain spot around the table. These are used to inform the reader of the
physical aspects of the lobster that affect the overall moral ambiguity of the subject.
In his closing statements he takes the time to throw some more thought provoking sentences in,
calling out a part of being a real gourmet (Wallace 64). Wallace wonders if future generations
might look back and see our current eating practices similarly to how we see tribal sacrifices
today. I see this as an extreme analogy but it has its use in this essay, it brings out the thought that
perhaps we should take a step back from our food and think about

Taking a Look at the Shard
The view at the top of the Shard is breath taking. London is seen all around you like a moving
tapestry. The View, which is situated on floors 68, 69 and 72 of the Shard, is twice the height of
any other platform in London. It has been London s long awaited attraction where people enjoy
360 degree views for up to 40 miles. Our sense of vision in this day and age is key to
understanding and acknowledging everything around us. In architecture the idea of uniqueness is
taken from the use of light and vision expressed. Architecture is mainly made us of glass and other
materials to support it. Natural light within open interior spaces being illuminated and divisions
dependent on light and transparency are vital part of modern architect influence. Piano says, I have
spoken of immaterial elements. These are such things as light, transparency, vibration, texture and
color, elements that interact with the form of the space but are not just a function of it. I started
out, in an ingenious, even rather primitive way, from lightness . Piano s concept of layering light
and transparency is compliant to do many things all at once. To bring forward a certain
architectural look, light is a general principle and vision is involved. Building with a lot of material
teaches you to shape components and replace toughness with adjustability. Piano describes that
taking things away from the material is also removing opacity from material. That lightness is an

Celebrity and media culture are probably the most overbearing pop culture conditions that we as
young people have to deal with, because it forces us to judge ourselves. Lady Gaga perfectly
describes the corrupt system of celebrity culture. Fame and celebrity culture is nothing new to
human nature. As humans progressed from hunting and gathering, people who have been skilled in
war, sports, and art have captured people s undivided attention. As a result, celebrity gossip is an
unhealthy distraction that undermines public discourse and sidetracks people from far more
important issues. Celebrities are exploited as products to society, set an unrealistic standard of
beauty, and the military having to face improper discrimination and a lack of support compared to
professional athletes. Celebrity culture has banished the real from the public. Thirty years ago, the
only celebrities were ones in movies. Breakfast at Tiffany s skyrocketed Audrey Hepburn s
talented acting career. As a result, Audrey remains one of Hollywood s greatest movie stars and the
world s most successful actresses. Now celebrities are everywhere Talk show hosts, lawyers,
musicians and teenagers. Although some may be entertained by celebrity gossip, the chatter that
passes the news ultimately distracts people from important issues. Divorces of celebrities are

Roof Restoration Cost Essay
How much does modern roof restoration cost in Australia?
At some point in the lifetime of your home you will need to replace the roof. Perhaps it has
succumb to corrosion, has worn out and leaks, or is otherwise too damaged to be patched and
easily repaired. The roof restoration cost can feel daunting but there are a few factors that come
into play that can make a big difference.
Can the roof be cleaned, repaired, or restored instead of fully replaced?
One of the first things you ll want to consider is if the roof can be repaired without needing to be
completely replaced. If you can repair damaged sections vs. replacing the whole roof you ll
certainly save some money. This is one of the great benefits to having a tiled roof. If a section is
damaged it is simple to remove the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If your repair is small they will most likely charge a base amount. When the contractor comes out
they will inspect your roof and will let you know if the damage is repairable. They should give you
a quote if it is or can discuss roofing options with you if the whole building needs to be reroofed.
Other factors that affect cost:
The cost of the modern roof restoration or replacement will also be affected by a number of
aspects including the pitch of your roof, how complex the roof design is, do the gutters and/or
insulation also need to be replaced, how high the roof is, and which type of roofing material you
want to use.
Once some of these factors are considered you can expect the reroofing to cost between $80 and
$120 per square metre. If you have a have with an exceptionally complex design or feature than
the cost will be more. When you discuss this with your contractor make sure you ask them if the
cost includes removal and disposal or the debris from the roof you are replacing. In all cases it
should be included but it is best to double check the quote before signing

Phoenix
The name of the main character, the old Negro woman, is Phoenix. Phoenix, in the Greek
Mythology, associated with the Sun, it obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its
predecessor.пј€
From Wikipediaпј‰ Back to the story, when our main character Phoenix is on her
way to the city, there are so many difficulties that she is facing bush catches her dress, a black
dog goes towards her and she fall into the ditch, etc. To old Phoenix, it is hard to go through the
path; she may fall off at any time. However, every time after she concord a difficulty, it seems that
she reborn.
2. The path
The concept path symbolizes a lot in the story. Through the path the negro woman passed, Eudora
Welty shows what the Negroes suffered when they were fighting for the equity. As a result, the path
means the path of the black liberation.
On the long road to town, Phoenix walks form the morning to the night; it is like that a human is
on his/her way of life. The road has beauty, of course, danger. If you have a clear target, you will
have the wheels of process. The walk was hard, just like what Phoenix says: Seem like there is
chains about my feet, time I get this far. Something always take a hold of me on this hill pleads I

Comparison Of Waiting For Icarus And MusпїЅe Des Beaux Arts
The two poems Waiting for Icarus and MusГ©e des Beaux Arts are narrative poems. MusГ©e
des Beaux Arts is a poem written by W. H. Auden and published in 1938. Waiting for Icarus is a
poem written by Muriel Rukeyser and published in 1973. The poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is
about how no one truly cares when a tragedy is taking place, unless said tragedy concerns them
directly. The poem Waiting for Icarus tells the story about a woman who is reminiscing being
abandoned by her lover while waiting for him at the beach. The two poems have a great deal of
similarities and differences between them. Despite the fact that MusГ©e des Beaux Arts uses an
indifferent tone and irregular rhyme scheme and Waiting for Icarus uses a melancholic tone and no
discernible rhyme scheme, both poems use the themes of abandonment and suffering and the myth
of Icarus in order to convey to their readers how people deal with pain and misery.
Auden touches upon many topics in his poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts. The Encyclopedia of
American Poetry: The Twentieth Century writes that, the poem condemns people s habitual
inattention to the miseries of others (Mao). In other words, one of the primary focuses in
MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is that of apathy. Auden begins his poem by writing, About suffering
they were never wrong, / The old Masters: how well they understood / Its human position: how it
takes place (lns. 1 3). Here, Auden is setting up another one of the poem s main topics, which is
human suffering. Auden is writing about how the old Masters knew how to capture the image
of human suffering within the confines of their canvases (ln. 2). Auden then writes, While
someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along; / How, when the aged
are reverently, passionately waiting / For the miraculous birth (lns. 4 6). In these lines Auden is
telling his readers that ordinary life will always go on by stating that the old patiently await the
arrival of newborn babies, which is a reference to the circle of life. He continues this idea in the
next few lines when he writes, there always must be / Children who did not specially want it to
happen, skating / On a pond at the edge of the wood (lns. 6 8). In lines 6, 7,

The Consequences Of Mississippi Burning
Mississippi Burning is based on a real historical event that takes place in the middle the civil rights
movement in Mississippi in 1964. The story sheds light on the investigation of the disappearance of
three civil rights workers. Faced with the daunting challenge of investigating a murder case in a
town where the Ku Klux Klanenjoys a great deal of support and discrimination runs deep, the FBI
agent had to resort to unconventional methods to crack the mystery behind the disappearance of
the three men. This film shows the deep division that persisted in the south and it gives us a
glimpse of the horror that Black people had to endure. This film illustrates the struggle of black
people in their quest to equality and justice. It gives us, the students a greater sense of this dark
history of our country and serves as a reminder that we must always be cognizant of the bleak
consequences of hate and discrimination.
Mississippi Burning is a portrayal of the murder of three Civil Right Worker in Mississippi in 1964

Shinto s Role In Creatio Creation Mythology
Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan. It can best be described as a structured system of
animism. The word Shinto comes from Chinese characters (shen and tao), meaning divine being
and the way respectively. Therefore the total meaning of Shinto is The Way of the Divine Beings
/Spirits. (British Broadcasting Corporation, 2011) It is unclear when the Shintobelief came about,
but it most likely has its earliest roots in animism. These animistic beliefs were expressed in the
form of spirits called kami. The kami are beings that are present in all aspects of nature and consist
of major deities, ancestor spirits, and minor spirits who have significance in a specific community.
(Wilkinson, 2012, p. 263) Several of these kami have had extreme importance in Japanese creation

Romanticism In The Gothic Novel
The Gothic Novel is a product of the inordinate imaginative capability that was present in the
slater part of the eighteenth century. It is known that the gothic novel s prototype was Horace
Walpole s The Castle of Otranto (1764). It foreshadows the modern novels that evoke horror and
terror in the minds of people who read them. It subtly suggests the psychological motivations of the
characters and the deep abysses of the human mind. The gothic is usually associated by people
with a prevailing sense of terrible. There are some stock and inherent properties that are common to
all gothic literature. The gothic novels make wholesome use of darkness, mystery and obscurity.
There is a note of moral didacticism in these novels. Consequently, they portray their characters as
binaries of virtue and vice. This polarization and an excessive use of sentimentalism sometimes...

But one must understand that an appropriate setting should accompany the plot. The gothic novel
cannot be merely dismissed as a precursor to the trend of horror fiction. It would not be ludicrous
to think of a spectre haunting a modern house, approaching its victim in the modern cinematic
version. The film makers would provide blood curdling visual effects and spine chilling sensation
to the audience. The gothic novels are more than that. They should not be termed as shoddy
literature. They sustain a person s tension and heighten his sense of anticipation. There is always a
prevailing aura of gloom and impending confrontation with the nemesis. While most modern horror
fiction and films would make use of a miasma of blood (blood ridden hair, tongue, eyes), hollow
cavities, entrails, distorted faces and so on, the gothic novels strikingly make themselves

Generally Accepted Auditing Standards Generally Accepted Auditing Standards or GAAS is a set
of systematic guidelines used by auditors when conducting audits on companies finances, ensuring
the accuracy, consistency and verifiability of auditors actions and reports (Lexico Publishing
Group, 2008). The following paper will explain the elements of GAAS and how GAAS is applied
to audits. GAAS has three elements that must be used during every audit. They are general
standards, standards of field work, and standards of reporting. Each of the three standards has their
own set of rules that must be complied with during every audit. ... Show more content on

There are three main types of audits, financial, operational, and compliance. First a financial
statement audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about an entity s presentation of its
financial position, results of operations, and cash flows for the purpose of expressing an opinion
on whether they are presented fairly in conformity with established criteria (Boynton Johnson,
2006). Next an operational audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about the efficiency
and effectiveness of an entity s operating activities in relation to specified objectives (Boynton
Johnson, 2006). Last a compliance audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence to determine
whether certain financial or operating activities of an entity conform to specified conditions, rules,
or regulations (Boynton Johnson, 2006). The standards of GAAS apply to all three types of
audits in more ways than one. First the general standards must all be adhered before any auditor
can perform an audit in any entity. The standards of field work also must be followed while in the
entity performing the audit. When reporting the results of the audit the standards of reporting must
be followed. The Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 changed the world of auditing in many ways. The act
put provisions into place that an auditor can no longer perform certain services. It also placed
increased penalties on managers of public companies who try to report incorrect data

The discarded skin becomes airborne and can cause severe asthmatic reactions, particularly to

The presence of cockroaches is often detected by their damage, smell or by the fecal matter
(called frass ) they deposit. These are clues which can aid in diagnosing a cockroach problem.
Cockroaches may use such things as glue or paste (especially from animal based materials),
starch and certain color dyes as foods. As a result, items such as stamps, envelopes, bindings of
older books, draperies and occasionally wallpapers may show signs of feeding. The size of the
mandible marks and the apparent degree of vigor with which they feed are indications of the type
of roach which did the damage. The size and shape of fecal droppings are also clues to the
cockroach species involved.
The most important aspect of cockroach damage derives from their habit of feeding and
harboring in damp and unsanitary places such as sewers, garbage disposals, kitchens,
bathrooms, and storage areas indoors. Filth from these sources is spread by the cockroaches to
food supplies, food preparation surfaces, dishes, utensils, and other surfaces. Far more food is
contaminated by cockroaches than they are able to eat. Diseases transmitted as a result of these
habits were discussed earlier. These same habits are why people are so disgusted and repulsed by
the mere presence of cockroaches. For many people, personal disgust and the social stigma
attached to cockroaches produce a complete lack of tolerance for any cockroaches in their home or
elsewhere.

The stories actually differ in ways that make your feelings change about the plot. These two
stories were written during the Anglo Saxon period. Anglo Saxon was also the time of Medieval
England. Each story gives a good representation of this time. It is necessary to learn about this
period in order to get the full impact of these stories. To understand that Medieval England was
very different compared to the current time is very important before reading the two stories. In
the Anglo Saxon time they had no rights for animals, they would simply slaughter them for all
the food they could eat. In today s time there are animal rights. For example, there are animal
rights activists. They believe that animals should not be killed for food or sport. Today s
societal views would have been laughed at from the point of view of the medieval world. Today
we have the luxury of being able to drive down the street, run into the grocery store, and purchase
whatever food we need. The Anglo Saxon s did not have cars nor were there grocery stores. As
for the Anglo Saxon s, they had to get their own food whatever way possible. That meant they
had to go out and kill animals for their meat, have their own gardens in order to have. The
medieval period was one of wars, fighting, and killing. In that time people were killing other people
without the consequences of jail time like there is today. They would have a little trial type

The Importance Of The Dual-Language Contributions To...
The way English is taught around the world contributes to linguistic imperialism. Other countries
English programs are a vital site for social and linguistic reproduction, and the inculcation of
relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes, and therefore particularly central in processes of linguistic
hierarchism (Phillipson 245). In other words, proper education is key when it comes to learning
English. ELL students rely on receiving outstanding education in order to contribute to the success
of the English speaking world. Without proper education, these students may not be able to keep up
with how fast the English languageis becoming the standard of the world. They could fall behind
along with their country if they do not live up to that standard. EFL programs vary in English
speaking countries and consist of different methods of teaching students to learn the language. One
of these methods is the dual language method, which consists of learning English alongside a
student s native language. This is not always ideal for parents, who advocate English only classes,
hoping for a fast track approach. Although English only classes may help with spoken fluency, it
has not been proven effective for learning the written aspects of the language (Lynch). The desire
for their children to keep up with the English speaking world is behind these parents criticism of
the dual language method. However, English is not easy to teach, especially alongside another
language.

History of the United States. In the first three chapters Zinn looks at not only the history of the
conquerors, rulers, and leaders; but also the history of the enslaved, the oppressed, and the led.
Like any American History book covering the time period of 1492 until the early 1760 s, A
People s History tells the story of the discovery of America, early colonization by European
powers, the governing of these colonies, and the rising discontent of the colonists towards their
leaders. Zinn, however, stresses the role of a number of groups and ideas that most books neglect
or skim over: the plight of the Native... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the Bahamas, Columbus sailed to Cuba and HispaГ±ola, the present day home of Haiti and
the Dominican Republic. One hundred fifteen years later and 1,500 miles to the north, the colony
of Jamestown was founded by a group of English settlers led by John Smith; shortly after that the
Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by a group of Puritans known to us today as the Pilgrims.
Because of uneasy and hostile relations with the nearby Pequot Indians, the Pequot War soon
started between the colonists and the natives. Needless to say, the colonists won, but it was at the
expense of several dozen of their own and thousands of Pequots. But despite Indian conflict,
exposure, starvation, famine, disease, and other hardships, the English kept coming to America. In
1619 they were settled enough that they started bringing African slaves into the middle colonies.
Before resorting to Africans, the colonists had tried to subdue the Indians, but that idea failed
before it was created. Zinn writes: They couldn t force the Indians to work for them, as Columbus
had done. They were outnumbered, and while, with superior firearms, they could massacre the
Indians, they would face massacre in return. They could not capture them and keep them enslaved;
the Indians were tough, resourceful, defiant, and at home in these woods, as the transplanted
Englishmen were not. White servants had

Katherine Anne Porter, Ernest Hemingway, And Robert Frost
Katherine Anne Porter, Ernest Hemingway, and Robert Frost were only some of the author s
that reflected the modern era in their literary work.Change , rebelliouness, fresh, current, etc.,
are words that could be used to describe the Modern Era. The Modern Era Consist of many
changes, changes the revolutionized the world. The lost generation is an example of a change
that occured the Modern Era. The lost generation basically was a grouo of writer s that served in
the war that felt alienated. The Lost Generation questioned the American Dream after seeing the
conditions of work places. This was a change because before this time rarely ever did anyone
ever question the American Dream or even the way of American living. Another, change that took
place in the Modern Era was Jazz Age. The Jazz Age was a tim when the younger generation
started questioning a lot of things. The younger and older generation also started conflicting with
each other because they were acting out, being more new school / modern rather than old school.
Change especialy took off during this time with Flappers, who started to be more rebellious withe
there clothes, hair, etc.; Speakeaises, underground clubs that served alcohol during the Prohibtion
which was the banning of alcohol; and Music, such as Jazz;afterall, it was called the Jazz Age.
The biggest change was in the NYC. The literaary scene in NYC changed dramatically, because of
the rebelliousness. The literary scene started to becom more hippie

Aretha Franklin s Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace, one of the most well known songs in the world, has been, and will continue to be,
performed in a vast variety of ways. Whether it is up tempo, balladic, or somewhere in between, this
song is much like the American National Anthem, in that every artist who approaches the piece
wants to incorporate their own signature style. Aretha Franklin and Judy Collins are two women
who are not deviant from that standard. Both of these women have produced classic renditions of
the same piece, but with wildly contrasting attributes.
Aretha Franklin, well known as a singer and figurehead for African American gospel, recorded
Amazing Grace with her own stylings and flair. However, this piece was not devoid of many key
characteristics of West African musical tradition. Ortiz Walton authored a piece of writing entitled,

The first of these is collective participation. Franklin s version of Amazing Grace is saturated with
this form of musical tradition. From the opening of the piece, there is a large sum of audience
participation with verbal exclamations, clapping, snapping, and humming. Several choir members
are heard shouting and clapping throughout the entirety of the song. In addition, there is a clear
rooting with improvisation and antiphony in between verses and choruses. This piece genuinely
seemed to be coming from the soul rather than a book. Franklin s performance is full of piano and
vocal jazz and blues scales that exist primarily in the minor key. Walton discusses African scales and

The Importance Of Piracy In The Music Industry
The music industry has been on the decline ever since new ways to pirate music have become
available. In fact, the Recording Industry Association of America estimates that six percent of the
U.S. gross domestic product is generated by the entertainment industry and that the music industry
contributes significantly to this. Bender and Wang found that a one percent increase in piracy
results in a 0.6 percent decrease in musicsales, which could put major companies out of business.
While the walls of text appear intimidating, the reasoning and explanations proved to be valuable
and precise. Bender and Wang s article emphasizes the importance of not supporting music piracy,
but the dull text loses its intended effect by boring the reader. Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are
a threat to all age groups and can be caused by a multitude of things. In fact, 1.4 million people
suffer from it in the United States alone. These are typically found in car crashes and sports
incidents with concussions and are normally nonlethal, but still damaging. Thankfully for those
who do receive a TBI, music education, which can be anything from listening, singing, producing,
or even performing music, can benefit their recovery. Patrick Bennington establishes many times
that music can be beneficial, but there is a severe lacking as to how it is beneficial. In fact, the
main concern of the article seems to focus on identifying a TBI and understanding if it is
acceptable to have someone who has sustained

Abel In Momaday s The House Made Of Dawn
His body, like his mind, had turned on him; it was his enemy. (Momaday 89) From a very young
age Abel has been nothing short of different. Some may say slow, odd, stupid or lazy. Throughout
the House Made of Dawn by M. Scott Momaday, Abel shows signs of having slow cognitive skills,
but ultimately Abel shows signs of being Autistic or none the less mentally incompetent.
Abel has never had things easy, from the very beginning Abel was exiled because his father was
not part of the tribe. Abel grew up in a tribe that did not accept him because of his mother s actions.
Tragically at the age of five Abel s mother was taken from him. He was so young that he did not
comprehend it. This tragic event in his life is one that he seemingly mentally blocks. ... Show more

Ultimately, this is the first truly mature thing we see Abel do as he sits with his dying
grandfather. He listens to him talk and sing and stays sober for most of it. However, when his
grandfather dies Abel loses it. Abel s grandfather passed away in the very early morning hours.
Abel sprang into action and immediately dressed him up for the funereal and ran to go get the
priest. The article Symptomatic Autism in Childhood and Adolescence states the autistic child,
is self centered and bases his responses to himself and to the outside world on his own unique
perceptions. This is exactly what Abel did. He thought this is what he should do. He had to get
it taken care of instantly. When the priest tells Abel they will take care of it later Abel is
extremely upset by this and immediately takes off running. Running can be viewed as a way for
Abel to relieve tension as people with Autism must do. Furthermore, many believe Abel s jumpy
thoughts to be a cause of war and PTSD but, Easson states The autistic child lives in the immediate
present and has very little concept of the future or past. This directly relates to Abel in the manner
that there is no transition to the flashbacks. It is seemingly all in one time. In Abel s mind, he does
not understand what is present and what is passed. They all seemingly morph into one in his

Examples Of Stereotyping In Society
Stereotyping
Today, we are living in a very complex social environment. And in today s society, people are
stereotyped in many different ways depending which category an individual is located in. Haven t
you been stereotyped at some point in your life? Or you may have stereotyped someone without
even noticing it. Stereotyping is actually more serious than we thought and it is becoming a major
problem in our society today. But what is stereotyping? According to the dictionary, stereotypeis
defined as a simplified and standardised conception or image invested with special meaning and
help in common by members of a group. It is considered as a form of prejudice, as people are
putting labels about how a person should act or live according to ... Show more content on

But it doesn t make sense how can something good harm someone? Examples of positive
stereotypes are: All Asians are geniuses and are good at mathematics. All whites succeed. All
women are caring and kind. All women always smell good. All men are good at sports. Haven t
you met a white who didn t succeed? Haven t you met rude women? Haven t you met a woman
who doesn t smell that pleasant? Let s be honest. Weren t you somehow disappointed due to the
lack of the characteristics you expected? Actually, you probably were, despite the fact that you
were unaware about it and didn t even realize it. Furthermore, as mentioned in past studies, it can
hinder individual s abilities. All Asians are good at maths. Imagine you are an Asian. Even
before taking the test people will probably think that you will be prosperous because you are an
Asian. This stereotype will pressure you, as expectations towards you have increased. What if an
you showed poor results in a maths test? You have failed to fulfil someone s expectations about
you. Positive stereotypes can be as harmful as negative ones. It might be worse because you did

Dancing Skeltons
Dancing Skeletons In the ethnography, Dancing Skeletons, the author Katherine Dettwyler
describes many reasons for her research in Mali. The main focus of her research was too attack
the problem of malnourished children and to figure out what diseases they were struggling with.
This ethnography detailed Dettwyler s second trip to Mali, and she wanted to relocate many of
the children she had previously measured, as well as add more children to her study. Throughout
the ethnography, Dettwyler makes it very clear that the malnutrition of these children is a major
problem in Mali. She describes many of the children she measures and the picture she paints in one
s mind is horrifying. One of the many diseases she comes across is Kwashiorkor,... Show more

This provided good insight into how these children should be nourished and more facts like that
would have helped the overall effect of the ethnography. The final thing I wish Dettwyler looked
more into was the male/female relationship and how the males felt about the female gender. I do
not know if she didn t address this because she had limited interaction with the males because of
her gender, or whether it was simply of no interest to her. If she could have explained further
why she didn t take much account to this it would have added a more well rounded ethnography.
What roles did the fathers play in the child raising? Were they passive like it appeared or was it
just not discussed? Dettwyler displayed tremendous anthropological skills as well as some not
so good skills. A good thing she did was build a high amount rapport with the Malians. This was
important so they would allow her to measure them, and also so they would trust her when she
taught them how to properly nourish their children. In the text she almost always displays a calm
and intellectual demeanor when she is speaking to parents about their badly diseased or injured
child. She has seen so many things that she is not surprised as too what she will see next and it
helps her keep her composure. One time she didn t

What Does The Prince Symbolize In The Masque Of The Red Death
The story Masque of the Red Death uses many symbols throughout the story. The story begins
telling about the grim disease that killed many people. It spreads quickly and kills within 30
minutes. The Prince Prospero, who symbolized the rich and prosperous, wanted to throw a great
masked ball where no one would get in or out so the disease couldn t spread or be brought into
the palace. As the ball went on there a clock that rang every hour. It stopped the people from
dancing and symbolized time passing. The people just resumed dancing after it rang like it was
nothing, however. The party was going fine until an intruder invaded the ball. This intruder
symbolized the Red Death, and came like a thief in the night . The prince tried to stop him with
the aid of a knife, but then fell dead, like the rest did after. Masque of the Red Death used lots of
symbols in it such as the Prince, who represented the rich, the clock, that represented the time
passing by and the people s inevitable death, and the intruder, who represented the Red Death and
how merciless it was. One symbol in Masque of the Red Death was the prince s name. Prince
Prospero symbolized all of the rich people that lived in the story. These people thought they were

Why Safe Spaces Are Bad For America Analysis
Trigger Warnings on College Campuses
According to the Harvard Political Review, a safe space regarding a college campus is defined
as protection from emotional discomfort. Although being comfortable about yourself and your
opinions is a good thing, having designated spaces where people can not voice their opinion
because it could hurt someone is not. In an interview with political and civil rights activists and
former advisor to former president Barack Obama, Van Jones. He was asked where he stood on the
subject of safe spaces on college campuses. Van Jones responded with,
I don t want you to be safe ideologically. I don t want you to be safe emotionally. I want you to be
strong. That s different. I m not going to pave the jungle for you. Put on some boots, and learn how

This is important because without this we are left with only what we ourselves have
experienced, and limits our knowledge of different subjects. Later in the article it goes on to say
If we truly want to change the world, we have to reach out for those with whom we profoundly
disagree. We have to understand where each individual s beliefs stem from. We cannot risk
dividing the country. This is important because we cannot isolate ourselves with only people that
share our beliefs. This makes the country counterproductive, and does not let us progress as a
society. Another reason why safe spaces should not be implemented in colleges is because the
majority of students don t mind the subjects. In the article New Poll Shows What College Students

Research Paper On Santa Claus
Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Chris Kringle are names associated with the most well
known figure among all children as Santa Claus. Currently, Santa lives in the North Pole with
his wife Mrs. Claus, reindeer, and his elves who create toys to give to all of the nice children.
For many, the act of making and delivering presents to all the little boys and girls of the world
may appear magical to children and adults but there is evidence proving that it is all smoke and
mirrors. In fact, devising a trip, delivering the presents, and the eating of cookies can be explained
by science and physics.
Believers of Santa s magic contribute the fact that Santa is able to travel around the entire world in
one night as proof of his magical authenticity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some believers of Santa s magic may state that he is able to eat all of these cookies because his
stomach has magical properties, allowing him to consume mass amounts of sweets and use it
as fuel. From the point of view of a scientist, this can be explained through the fact that Santa and
his sleigh expend a lot of energy and Assuming Santa comes fully laden with all the toys
delivered to children across the world, he has somewhere around a million tonnes of toys to
deliver, assuming about 4.5 pounds (2 kg) of toys per household (Siegel 1). With Santa
expending so much energy he would need to eat the sweets to power him and maybe even his
sleigh by turning ...those milk and cookies into energy via Einstein s E=mc^2 (Siegel 1). A
statement previously mentioned, stated that Santa s belly is magical and therefore allows Santa
to regain his energy. According to science, it would be impossible for Santa to eat millions of
cookies in one night, even if they were as a replenishment for his depleted energy. Since it is
physically impossible for Santa to eat millions of cookies in one night, He takes many cookies
back to the North Pole with him. One of his favorite activities after he returns home is to separate
all the cookies and remember where they came from. And he will eat them one by one. (Westover

Life in Navy Boot Camp

It was a warm summer evening as I packed for Navy Boot Camp. I carefully went down the list

my parents about my move to becoming my own man. I looked at their faces and could tell that
although they were proud they were a little nervous about their only son leaving home for the first
time. My mom tried to smile but she was proud yet nervous because I had always been her little guy

The first night I can honestly say I missed my folks and at one point wanted to cry but I pushed
on. I knew I had to do this for me and them, I had to show myself first and them second that I had
what it took to make it.
Day two and forward we woke up at 4 am with yelling and screaming that we had 15 minutes to
shower, shave and get in line for physical training and breakfast. Everything was 15 to 20
minutes including eating; you learn to eat real quickly. Training was tough but as the weeks went
on it got easier. Then around week 4 we had to swim, I was never a strong swimmer so I was
nervous but I made it through. Around week five it seemed they got a little easier and then
explained that the toughness was to help us rely on each other and build the necessary teamwork
within us all.
As time went on we had learned the entire Chain of Command, proper Navy rules and how to
properly wear all the uniforms and the seasonal changes for whites and blues. As the 8th week
came we got ready for graduation. Everyone was ready to show their parents how much they had
grown up in the last two months. Part of growing up was proper grooming, making our beds and
being responsible and accountable for each other.
Some of the guys in my company sat around the night before talking about some of the hard times
in boot camp. I talked about the hard part for me was the fire fighting training and taking off that

  • 2. The Napoleonic Er The Causes Of The Napoleonic Era The Napoleonic Era can be said to have begun with the Coup of 18 Brumaire, which overthrew the Directory (and is often believed to have brought the French Revolution to a close), and established the French Consulate, along with the appointment of Napoleon as First Consul in the winter of 1779. Preceding this time, the French were fighting a loosing battle against the Ottomans throughout Egypt, Greater Syria, and the Levant. Once Napoleon became the de facto ruler of France, he began massive reforms. The spread of citizens rights into law began, representative assembly took hold, religious toleration became the norm, the country was re organized into departments, and the metric system was invented. Upon becoming First Consul, Napoleon established... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this time, France also sold their North American continental holdings to the Americans in the Louisiana Purchase . Britain cancelled the treaty in May 1803, and war resumed. Europeans formed seven coalitions between 1792 1815 to defeat French forces. In May of 1804, Bonaparte had himself declared Emperor, and crowns himself in the company of a (bribed) pope. The Code Civil became Code Napoleon and Napoleon codified French law into statutes. In 1805, the bulk of the most noteworthy Napoleonic victories of the Era begin to occur, such as those of Ulm, Trafalgar (including the death of Lord Nelson), and Austerlitz, resulting in the defeat of the Holy Roman and the Russian Empire. The Confederation of the Rhine was created at this time and initially included 16 member states, with Saxony and Westphalia joining later. In 1806, British marines (temporarily) seize Buenos Aires from Spain, and are expelled by local militias in 1807. Napoleon also begins naming family member to various governmental posts in earnest, including Joseph to the post of King of Naples. • 3. Homelessness Among American Veterans Research Homelessness Among American Veterans Research Paper An issue that has been around for decades which still remains in the United Sates today is homelessness among veterans. Vanessa Turner has a story that needs to be heard by many. As a homeless veteran, Turner joined the U.S. military in 1997 and later, proudly advanced to the rank of a sergeant. In 2003, Turner suffered from a traumatic injury while serving in Iraq. In suffocating 130 degrees fahrenheit heat, Turner fell into a coma and nearly died of heart failure. Immediately, she was brought to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., treated, and released with a pending medical discharge. After Turner s release, both her and her daughter had no residency and no permanent health care plan. In attempt to make a stable living to sustain herself and her daughter, they often temporarily moved between family to friends apartments, never actually having a place to call home. In an effort to receive help from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center was very frustrating; she was told she had to wait months simply to get medical attention. Again when Turner requested for her belongings to be shipped back from her unit s base in Germany, they told her she had to obtain transportation to Germany at her own expense, which she was unable to do because of the amount of money that it would cost, unfortunately resulting in not getting her property back. Vanessa Turner is just one of many homeless veterans who are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Getting to Yes Report Negotiations Getting to Yes is about improving your negotiation skills. First, it goes through the disadvantages of the classic positional negotiating tactic that involves taking a stance and slowly reaching an agreement after each party makes multiple concessions often ending with less than anyone wants and a poor relationship between parties. After that, it discusses principled negotiation which, in short, is focused on separating the people from the problem, focusing on the interests of the parties and not their positions, inventing multiple options that look for mutual gains through brainstorming activities, and basing the end result on objective standards. This is the bulk of the book and there are many examples ranging from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was a lot of talk about thinking about the negotiation objectively. This will require me to prepare for the meeting/phone call by getting multiple ads for similar vehicles, invoices for very recent repairs like brand new brakes, tires, and significant engine repairs that I wouldn t have paid for if I knew my car was going to be totaled 3 months later, and information on the Kelly Blue Book value of the car. It was mentioned many times that preparation can be the key to success. After the adjuster tells me what my car is worth, I will try to direct the conversation by asking how they came up with that specific number, and if they have taken into account all the extra options and recent repairs on the car. I will do my best not to yield to pressure, to assure the adjuster that I appreciate that they are doing their job (hopefully separating the person from the position), repeat back their point of view in order to understand their position entirely, clearly state that I want a fair price based on objective criteria, ask the adjuster if they would sell their car for an amount that was derived from the methods used to price my car, and I will not get angry, decide on a price in the first meeting, or attack their position. When buying my new car, I will prepare ahead of time to know the costs of the cars I m looking at and always keep in mind that my BATNA will be to just go to another dealership. In the future, I ... Knopf, Inc., New York, in 1930. Readers and critics see this book as one of the best detective novels ever written, but they also see it as a great piece of literature. With 217 pages, it is an easy read but is a stimulating story. The main character of this book is a private investigator named Sam Spade. The story revolves around him being lied to and interrogated constantly by people who are hiring him to find the statue called The Maltese Falcon. • 10. Immanuel Kant And The Kant Essay Immanuel Kant Lying Chiyane Peterson MCCC Ethics MW 1:30pm Parviz Dehghani Lying the one form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him just assumed that anyone who lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit. (Landau,pp.171) This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie rather than the truth. It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. While lying, we accuse others for not being transparent. While being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere. (Dehghani,Ethics) We know how it feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the person will be truthful. We rather be surrounded by truthful people constantly despite all the lies that some people tell. No ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Judicial Originality And The Legal System Topic 2 By: Raylen White Judicial originality is the most fundamental principle in the legal system. Judicial originality to me means being able to make a decision based off the effects. If a judge has had a case in the past similar to a current one, the judge can base his current decision using the same discretion or rule he used before. Dworkin wrote a paper about this, he argues that judges should not be able to create laws through the effect of their decisions. He has two arguments about why judicial originality is not a good thing for society. In this paper I will talk about these arguments and if Dworkin has the right to claim that this argument has no force against it. The first argument he had against judicial originality was that a community should be govern by men and women who are elected by and responsible to the majority. This means that most judges are not elected by a wide spread of the community, and if they could make their own laws they would not benefit the community. It is important that the community has a say on what should be a law and what should not be a law. If judges were to make laws that would be a contradiction to the theory of separation of powers. It would seem to be that judges are analogous to the legislature, which in fact, they are not because the legislature is elected. Policy decisions must therefore be made through the operation of some political process designed to produce an accurate expression of the different interest that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Upper East Side on one hand is famous for being one of the richest neighborhoods in New York. • 15. The Epic of Beowulf Beowulf is the oldest anglo saxon poem written in English. The poem describes the heroic deeds of Beowulf in his fight against monsters. Even if the events narrated in the poem take place in Denmark, the poem was transmitted by oral language between the anglo saxon even 200 years after its creation. Anglo saxons did not consider themselves british, but vikings, and their heroes were always from Scandinavia. The author of Beowulf is anonymous. The original poem was written on sheep tanned leather. Beowulf is not only the story of a young man that gains glory against monsters or of an old king that dies fighting a dragon, but it is the story of a brave man who, once young and invincible, chooses to fight against the dragon though he knows that he s going to have a tragic end. Beowulf meets all the features of an epic poem: it is a long narration of a national hero ( he is recognized, rewarded and glorified by the king himself and his people), his travel on the sea, his adventures and the heroic episodes he s the central figure in. Moreover, the main protagonist, Beowulf, is a brave young man, like Gilgamesh, Achilles or Hercules, with more than human strength and wiser, more courageous than others. Unlike the other epic heroes we have studied untill now, Beowulf is giving us a detailed self description when he meets the king : In my youth I have done many glorious deed. Wallace wrote this essay to show his thought process dealing with the moral ambiguity of cooking lobster, and the research he did to further understand the subject. He primarily uses an informational tone with a heavy emphasis on pathos. He does a fairly good job remaining unbiased and showing the counterarguments. Later on he states that this means that although lobster s experience pain it is not a struggle based on discomfort but more of a preference. More akin to you preferring to sit in a certain spot around the table. These are used to inform the reader of the physical aspects of the lobster that affect the overall moral ambiguity of the subject. In his closing statements he takes the time to throw some more thought provoking sentences in, calling out a part of being a real gourmet (Wallace 64). • 23. Comparison Of Waiting For Icarus And MusпїЅe Des Beaux Arts The two poems Waiting for Icarus and MusГ©e des Beaux Arts are narrative poems. MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is a poem written by W. H. Auden and published in 1938. Waiting for Icarus is a poem written by Muriel Rukeyser and published in 1973. The poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is about how no one truly cares when a tragedy is taking place, unless said tragedy concerns them directly. The poem Waiting for Icarus tells the story about a woman who is reminiscing being abandoned by her lover while waiting for him at the beach. The two poems have a great deal of similarities and differences between them. Despite the fact that MusГ©e des Beaux Arts uses an indifferent tone and irregular rhyme scheme and Waiting for Icarus uses a melancholic tone and no discernible rhyme scheme, both poems use the themes of abandonment and suffering and the myth of Icarus in order to convey to their readers how people deal with pain and misery. Auden touches upon many topics in his poem MusГ©e des Beaux Arts. The Encyclopedia of American Poetry: The Twentieth Century writes that, the poem condemns people s habitual inattention to the miseries of others (Mao). In other words, one of the primary focuses in MusГ©e des Beaux Arts is that of apathy. Auden begins his poem by writing, About suffering they were never wrong, / The old Masters: how well they understood / Its human position: how it takes place (lns. 1 3). Here, Auden is setting up another one of the poem s main topics, which is human suffering. Auden is writing about how the old Masters knew how to capture the image of human suffering within the confines of their canvases (ln. 2). Auden then writes, While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along; / How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting / For the miraculous birth (lns. 4 6). In these lines Auden is telling his readers that ordinary life will always go on by stating that the old patiently await the arrival of newborn babies, which is a reference to the circle of life. He continues this idea in the next few lines when he writes, there always must be / Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating / On a pond at the edge of the wood (lns. 6 8). The size of the mandible marks and the apparent degree of vigor with which they feed are indications of the type of roach which did the damage. The size and shape of fecal droppings are also clues to the cockroach species involved. The most important aspect of cockroach damage derives from their habit of feeding and harboring in damp and unsanitary places such as sewers, garbage disposals, kitchens, bathrooms, and storage areas indoors. Filth from these sources is spread by the cockroaches to food supplies, food preparation surfaces, dishes, utensils, and other surfaces. Far more food is contaminated by cockroaches than they are able to eat. Diseases transmitted as a result of these habits were discussed earlier. These same habits are why people are so disgusted and repulsed by the mere presence of cockroaches. For many people, personal disgust and the social stigma attached to cockroaches produce a complete lack of tolerance for any cockroaches in their home or elsewhere. ... For example, there are animal rights activists. They believe that animals should not be killed for food or sport. Today s societal views would have been laughed at from the point of view of the medieval world. Today we have the luxury of being able to drive down the street, run into the grocery store, and purchase whatever food we need. The Anglo Saxon s did not have cars nor were there grocery stores. • 38. The Importance Of The Dual-Language Contributions To... The way English is taught around the world contributes to linguistic imperialism. Other countries English programs are a vital site for social and linguistic reproduction, and the inculcation of relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes, and therefore particularly central in processes of linguistic hierarchism (Phillipson 245). In other words, proper education is key when it comes to learning English. ELL students rely on receiving outstanding education in order to contribute to the success of the English speaking world. Without proper education, these students may not be able to keep up with how fast the English languageis becoming the standard of the world. They could fall behind along with their country if they do not live up to that standard. EFL programs vary in English speaking countries and consist of different methods of teaching students to learn the language. One of these methods is the dual language method, which consists of learning English alongside a student s native language. This is not always ideal for parents, who advocate English only classes, hoping for a fast track approach. Although English only classes may help with spoken fluency, it has not been proven effective for learning the written aspects of the language (Lynch). The desire for their children to keep up with the English speaking world is behind these parents criticism of the dual language method. However, English is not easy to teach, especially alongside another language. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One hundred fifteen years later and 1,500 miles to the north, the colony of Jamestown was founded by a group of English settlers led by John Smith; shortly after that the Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by a group of Puritans known to us today as the Pilgrims. Because of uneasy and hostile relations with the nearby Pequot Indians, the Pequot War soon started between the colonists and the natives. Needless to say, the colonists won, but it was at the expense of several dozen of their own and thousands of Pequots. But despite Indian conflict, exposure, starvation, famine, disease, and other hardships, the English kept coming to America. In 1619 they were settled enough that they started bringing African slaves into the middle colonies. Before resorting to Africans, the colonists had tried to subdue the Indians, but that idea failed before it was created. Zinn writes: They couldn t force the Indians to work for them, as Columbus had done. They were outnumbered, and while, with superior firearms, they could massacre the Indians, they would face massacre in return. They could not capture them and keep them enslaved; the Indians were tough, resourceful, defiant, and at home in these woods, as the transplanted Englishmen were not. White servants had ...
