Designing The Costume For The Tin Man
1. Imagine you are designing the costume for the Tin Man. What advantages and disadvantages
does the costume in the film have? (Consider aspects such as mobility, realism, artistic intent, and
so on.) Would you make any changes to the costume for a theater production? Why or why not?
If i were to design a costume for the tin man, some advantages would be price, and portability, but
some of the disadvantaged would be the way it may reflect light and also if it s comfortable for the
one who wears it.
2. In the scene where Dorothy says goodbye to Oz (time code 1:37:38), what is the mood of the
scene? How does the filmmaker achieve this mood? The mood of the scene was very depressing
because of how she accomplished so much and then she had to return back home to her family.
The way that they have the success was to make everyone look sad and silent, even the expression
of tears put out more of the mood of that whole scene. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

System Thinking Is The Process Of Understanding How Things...
System thinking is the process of understanding how things influence one another within a system.
Russell L. Ackoff, Dr. W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Senge s define, think differently, and have
different approaches of system thinking. Russell L. Ackoff was born on February 12, 1919 in
Philadelphia. He was a pioneer in the field of operations research, systems thinking and
managementscience. (Russell L. Ackoff) He received his bachelor degree in architecture at the
University of Pennsylvania in 1941. In 1942 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army. After his
return he went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his doctorate in
philosophy of science in 1947 as C. West Churchman s first doctoral student. (Russell L. Ackoff)
Russell L. Ackoff says the typical way management has been trained in the western world is to
divide any complex system into parts, and then try to manage each part as best as you can. If
these were to be divided into parts we would believe two things which are any problem can be
solved, and the system as a whole will behave well. Ackoff goes on to say these are false because
it s possible to improve the performance of each part taken separately and destroy the system at the
same time. (Production Management: A Total Quality Management Approach) Ackoff defines a
system as a whole containing two or more parts that contains the five conditions. The first condition
is the whole has one or more important properties or functions. The

Irish Immigration In The 19th Century Essay
An American Immigrant Journey: A Look at Asian and Irish Immigration in the 19th Century
Many different people have many different stories to tell when talking about how they ended up in
America. Some people had the choice to migrate to America in hope of a better life, while others
were forced against their will to do so. Being American in America seems much more than just
being a United Statescitizen, it has to do more with how they fit in with those who call themselves
American. Re word The Irish immigration in the 19th century was a necessary move for those
who wanted to live. Ireland underwent a famine and many of the Irish were starving and dying due
to lack of nutrients and disease that took over Ireland. Many Americans had problems with these
new Irish immigrants simply because it seemed like they provided America with no benefit at all.
Not only did the Irish come to America not being able to provide benefit for the country, but they
were also very Catholic while in the 19th century, America was a Protestant country. These are two
probably probable? reasons the Irish were discriminated against throughout the 19th century. When
they first arrived, to the Americans, it seemed like the Irish could not be trusted.... Show more

Other countries had recognized America to be the land where anything is possible, that and there
is an American Dream possible to achieve. Both the Irish and Chinese immigrants wanted to
become wealthy and live a better life than what they had in their home country. Although the Irish
had their own adversity to deal with, the Chinese also shared some of the same challenges but also
encountered different ones. Unlike the Irish, they the chinese were good for work, meaning that
they could provide benefit to wherever they worked. The Irish lied about their previous work

The Hurt Locker, Directed by Kathryn Bigelow Essay
As most of you know by now the movie The Hurt Locker won the Oscar for movie of the year,
and this makes me very angry. My civilian friends keep asking me why I m so mad, because most
of them enjoyed watching it. Simply put it s because the movie is full of lies, exaggerations, and
ugly people. But it s a movie they say, of course it s not realistic . That s strange.. because the back
of The Hurt Lockerbox says Powerfully Realistic . Yet this movie is about as far from realism that
a movie can be (this claim includes all movies about time travel, and vampires, but excludes any
movies starring the Wayans brothers). Don t get me wrong here I m not a stickler for all military
realism. The military uniforms in the Transformers are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to his evil hideout instead of relocating a bridge for an obviously suicidal frontal assault?
Fantasmical stupidity at its finest and that is why X Men 3 will never live up to its predecessors.
When I first thought about writing this blog entry I considered writing a list of all the mistakes
the movie makes, but my list became way too long and boring. Instead I decided to describe just
how outlandish The Hurt Locker is by writing my own movie script, but this one is the medical

The American Liberal Democratic Values Essay
American Liberal Democratic Values
I.The definitions of democracy and liberalism
Liberalism and democracy are two different concepts, liberalism is a political philosophy which is
based on the principle of individual freedom, it calls for guarantees of the rights of the individual,
including freedom from arbitrary authority, freedom of religion, the right to own and exchange
private property, rights to equal opportunity in health care, education, and employment, and the
rights to political participation and representation. While democracy is a set of political procedures
involving participation and competition. Most democracies are liberal democracies to some degree.
because political participation, competition, and accountability are perhaps the best guarantees that
individual freedoms will be preserved, thus the terms liberal and democracy often go hand in hand.
II. Liberal democracy the U.S. goal
U.S. policies aim to boost the spread of liberal democratic values. In the nineteenth century, the U.S.
didn t play an important role in global governance, as the geographical reach of the United States
political influence expanded, liberal democracy promotion turned into a major part of U.S. foreign
policy, the aim of promoting democracy abroad had been a core element in how the United States
exercises its international power. Moral Universalism , introduced by America s project of liberalism
during the twentieth century, is an ideology based on the liberal

How Rural Slaves Lived And Worked On Brazilian Sugar...
Throughout the 16th century, as there was a demographic collapse of the indigenous population,
there was now a new demand for slave labor in Latin America. In Brazil, the Portuguese needed a
large workforce to cultivate sugar plantations. As a result, numerous slaves from Africa were
imported to work on large plantationfields. In various plantations, rural slaves experienced harsh
working and living conditions. Few slaves had a high life expectancy. Robert Edgar Conrad in
Children of God s Fire, shares some primary sources that dealt with the types of environments and
conditions many slaves faced and encountered in Brazil. The sources also gave insight into the
regulations and economics/business of the slave trade. Conrad states that rural Brazil was a hell
for blacks (Conrad 54). Many slaves dealt with extremely harsh conditions just to keep the
European market in Latin American growing and profitable. This paper will analyze how rural
slaves lived and worked on Brazilian sugar plantations.
To start, in Brazil the Portuguese become convinced that full scale exploitation of the land was
imperative for the safety of their entire overseas empire. Sugar cultivation was the ideal crop to
guarantee the existence of a profitable colony. As a result, the Portuguese dominated the Atlantic
slave trade. Various slaves from different parts of Africa were brought to Brazil and experienced
difficult working and in living in Brazilian sugar plantations and that only slaves

Racial Stereotypes And Its Negative Effects On Our Society
Humanity as a whole cannot help but judge one another. A stereotype is a fixed belief about
someone s religion, gender, or social group. Stereotypes can have positive and negative affects on
our society. Often times, people use stereotypes to belittle a group of people. An example of a
racial stereotype would include all Hispanics being illegal immigrants. Racial stereotypesalways
favor the raceof the holder and put down other races. People use racial stereotypes because it is
human nature to recognize patterns. When seeing these patterns within a specific race people
often tend to immediately associate him or herself within that society. From a positive point of
view stereotypes can give confidence and favor them above a certain group or class of people.
Stereotypes such as Asians have high IQs can make them have confidence in themselves. often
times it is hard to live up to a positive stereotype. Although we think positive stereotyping is a
good thing it really is not. Most positive stereotyping sets the bar unrealistically high and only
leaves room for failure. Another example of a positive stereotype with a negative affect is All
black people are good at sports. If a particular African American is not good at sports then they
will feel less than adequate. Positive stereotypes can be depressing to individuals who are
supposed to posses them but fall short. Referring to the article listed as Reality TV Goes Where

Beethoven Vs Mozart
Is classical music the best nomenclature for what we know as classical music? In the history of
music, there is a period known as the classical period, where music is under the classical style.
Two significant artist of this time are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Both
of these artists are gifted by God, yet they contribute differently. In the year 1756, Mozart of
Salzburg, Austria came to life. Mozart was destined for musicand when his father, Leopold, saw
this truth, he devoted himself to improving Mozart s gift. By the age of four, Mozart was
composing piano concertos. Mozart and his sister were taken all over the country by their father,
which enriched and advanced his musical education. At the age of thirteen, Mozart had his first
musical job, but after twelve year was fired. When Mozart moved to Vienna, he met Joseph Haydn,
who was a mentor to him. In 1781, Mozart, against his father s will, married Constanze, who placed

At the age of four, in 1774 in Bunn, Germany, Beethoven began to play music, but desired to be
free from the harsh vigilant eyes of his father. At the age of twenty two, Beethoven moved to
Vienna, which resulted in musical growth and freedom. In Vienna, he met Mozart as well as
Haydn. Beethoven actually was taught and influenced by Haydn. To truly experience freedom in
his music, Beethoven had to experience tragedies. When Beethoven s mother died and when he
realized, at thirty one, that he was losing his hearing, Beethoven began to express the freedom of
emotion in his music. Unlike Mozart, Beethoven had economic stability, but he did not have the
ability to write a song instantly. However, Beethoven composed nine symphonies, the fifth being
the most famous. It was in his third symphony, Eroica, when Beethoven found his own style.
Beethoven truly was the father of the Romantic style, of music, due to the emotion in his

Themes In The House On Mango Street
Journal 5
In the novel, the House on Mango Street, Esperanza constantly thinks about her dream of success
and leaving Mango Street. The unfortunate situations and circumstances of those who live in her
neighborhood increase her strive for this future. For instance, she doesn t want to chose marriage
as an easy way out of the neighborhood, like what most women on Mango Street choose to do.
Moreover, she wants to obtain success and independence from the neighborhood on her own.
Through her writing and education, she defies the typical fate most of the people in the
neighborhood end up with. Cisneros uses the thematic idea of dreaming to reveal the theme that a
person may have to contain the initiative to take a more challenging path to obtain success.
In the novel, people tend to rely on chance and luck to change their fate rather than taking action
to improve their circumstances. For example, Esperanza s mother claims that [w]hen [they] win
the lottery (86), they can buy a house on the hills (86). Waiting to win a lottery is impractical and
Esperanza realizes this because she s tired of looking at what [they] can t have. (86).
Consequently, Esperanza becomes even more determined to own [her] own house. (87). Esperanza
knows that she has to work to get the house, not wait on lotteries, which are unreliable. Another
example of people s dependency on chance to improve their situation would be Marin. Marin waits
for a car to stop, a star to fall, someone to change her

Social Dilemmas In A Divergent
Living in the society, Tris ought to be obeying the law as she is part of it. But, when she finds out
herself is a Divergent, she can sense that something is running off. There is a social norm that that
the divergent is outskirt. And even the test administrator warns her never tell anyone her result
shows as Divergent because this will create chaos. As mentioned, the society under Abnegation
government is not just and fair, it even does not reach the view of Mockus by recognizing of legal,
moral and social norms that may regulate citizens behaviour . Each faction is required to focus on
the responsibility and they have different values, they do not agree to each other core virtues;
therefore, one faction is not willing to communicate with the other faction. Although during the
period of ruling, there is no war but it certainly builds up the disapproval from the Erudite faction to
the moral normand social norm which they think they should be the one ruling the society with
the intelligence more than being a selfless. Also, the Erudite finds out that the Abnegation leader
is actually not upholding the norms of selfless as he abused his own son which leading his child
to turn away from the family. Consequently, the Erudite tries to create new social norms; however,
they did not succeed. They should see the life as sacred and they should be following the Mayor
Mockus footstep by acting to the new rules personally, instead of hiding behind and deceive people
to do their work. Another reason that the Erudite plan is not successful because their inner demon
creates too much violence and opposing voices.
From the Week 4 reading The Better Angels of Our Nature , there is a sentence which is very
suitable for the setting of the novel. Steven Pinker wrote that even in peaceable societies, people
are fascinated by the logic of bluff and threat ... the vulnerabilities of a human body and how they
can be exploited or shielded. Even the initial state of government is trying to create the best
peacefulness to the society, the desire of the Erudite has broken the harmony by creating violence.
The Erudite is trying to rule the faction by make the society an own version of utopia. To do this,
they make false claims on the

Circle Of Stone Woman s Journey To Herself Summary
Section One
Circle of Stones Woman s Journey to Herself is basically a guide for women to find their true
selves using the ancient archetypal feminine manifest form. There are a group of women that are
being very detailed about the journeys, dreams, and visions they experienced in their lives. They
are being very open and telling the truth so the author was able to use all their stories to create a
feminine space so we can relate and look at our lives through the women s ancient culture and
rituals. It takes you on a journey a meditative experience of the lost feminine so by the end of the
book you can be awaken and be able to help other women. The book first talks about how

years ago until laws were introduced. The laws took all the rights from women which lead us to
now. Women went from having everything and knowing themselves. To being confident,
protective, and goodness to not having anything and having to obey orders from men. In order
to grow and find one true self you have to leave behind the usual role you are expected to do and
basically do what you want. Through the processes of finding yourself you have to go through
different stages and the book takes you through them. The stages are sense of depth, feelings,
process, fear, need, self, growing being, gathering wholeness, embracing woundedness, finding
her voice. By the end of this book you should have a vision for the impact women should and will
have on our current culture and society. Also, you should know how your life will better from the
impact you have on other women and the impact they have on you. This book really shows how
women can and should work together and support each other because we are true goddesses and we

Reductive Materialism
Reductive Materialism:
Reductive materialism is a sub theory or a version of Physicalism. It suggests that sensations of the
mind correlate exactly to physical movements of the brain. In other words, every thought or
experience which occurs in your mind, can be found as activity in your brain. This does not mean
however, that the mind and the brain are the same thing, just that they are both different experiences
of the same thing. For example, a neuroscientist may be able to study your brain activity as you
experience it in your mind. A problem with this theory when applied, is that two different people
having the same thought, will have the identical brain activity. But the thoughts of one person are
subjective to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However if these experiences are intangible, then they can t be exactly the same as the functioning
of the brain, which is a tangible substance. The Two Marys analogy demonstrates this dispute of
reductive materialism, as once the Mary has learned something by an experience or qualia , then
that experience can t be a physical event in the brain.
Eliminative Materialism:
Eliminative Materialism argues that everything we believe about minds and conciousness does not
exist (including belief itself), on the grounds that it cannot be empirically proved. The claim is that
the understood laws or generalisations we use when we use terms of the mind , are false. For
example, if someone talks about their feeling of pain, then they would call this statement Folk
Psychology , meaning that the words are just used habitually and don t have any true meaning.
They say that the problem is in the language we use to make sense of what we can t prove. This
idea however, is not consistent, as it disputes the belief in anything, meaning the belief of
eliminativism in itself cannot be believed. Similarly, believing in Nihilism is contradictory.
Another problem with the argument is that it assumes empirical methods of experiment are always
accurate and consistent, when we know that this is not always the case, and some physical events
in the world are not caused by physical substances.
If all out beliefs and

health and social care organisations need to recognise and understand the relationship between this

Essay Factors Keeping China From Becoming Today s Super Power
There are significant inhibiting factors keeping China from becoming today s world power. One
of the main arguments is that China s economic success today is just a replica of the U.S.
housing bubble before it crashed (Robinson). They are building faster than their expanding
middle class can keep up with (Robinson), which was the exact problem the U.S. had right before
the market crashed and they fell into a recession. China would have to slow their rapid expansion
down in order to avoid crashing just like the U.S. did several years ago. Another argument against
China s candidacy as hegemon is that they act too much like a bullied nation (Ng). China feels the
need to react strongly when negative remarks are directed at them, which... Show more content on

It would be near impossible for China to replace the western set of ideals with their own in today
s established society. U.S. brands are also far more popular on the international scale. Products
like Coke and corporations like McDonalds can be found worldwide, while China does not have
products or chains like these. These U.S. companies show that the U.S. influence is widely
spread today, however with China s current economic boom, it would not be impossible for a
product or company to become popular internationally. China s current minimal militaristic
approach suggests that they do not want to become a world power through force if necessary, and
is instead focusing on their economic growth to further expand their influence. Today, there are
people who claim that China is beginning to colonize Africa: a staggering 750,000 Chinese have
settled in Africa over the past decade (Malone). Since Africa is home to an abundance of natural
resources, China wants to expand within Africa in order to gain control over their loosely regulated
trade market in order to gain more profits. While China has supplied some military sanctioned good
of their own (Malone), they supplies that they have given pale in comparison next to what the U.S.
owns and has lent out to other countries due to the large gap in technological innovation between
the two. Rather than challenge the existing global order, China has adopted

The War of 1812
In this essay I will be discussing the major events and battles that took place during the War of
1812. It started in 1812 and lasted until the spring of 1815. There were three main causes for the
war taking place, America trading with parts of Europe(France), the Impressment, and the possible
desire on the part of the United States to annex Canada, The War of 1812 ended as a stalemate in
the spring of 1815. The War of 1812 was a war that never should have been fought.

America hated this because the British were literally taking american people and making them fight
for someone else.
Why did America want to annex Canada
America wanted to annex Canada because it had a lot of resources that America would have loved
to get there hands on the great amount of resources that America could have used. America also
wanted to annex canada because it would have been a huge amount of territory gain for america
and it would have made America a super country, it would have been a metaphorical spit in the face
to Great Britain.
How did the war end?
The war of 1812 ended as a stalemate in 1814 when the downfall of Napoleon allowed the British to
distribute more military resources to the war, Washington D.C., fell to the British in August. While
In Washington, British troops burned the White House down, and other buildings in retaliation for
the earlier burning of government buildings in Canada by the US soldiers. The British soon

The Importance Of A Learning Environment For An Effective...
Definition:
One of the most challenging tasks in being an effective teacher is to create a learning environment,
which adequately addresses the needs of all students. Effective teachers must be responsive to a
diverse range of student backgrounds, including linguistic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic
(1.3 AITSL, 2011). In addition, an effective learning environment includes an understanding of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students learning needs and incorporates differentiated teaching
methods to meet the needs of specific students abilities (1.4 1.5 AITSL, 2011). Therefore, to be an
effective teacher aspiring to meet the Every Student Succeeding policy (Education Queensland,
2016), in addition to well developed content and pedagogical knowledge I will require a broad
knowledge, understanding, and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures
and languages (2.4 AITSL, 2011). Cultural diversity is multidimensional and may range from,
language to beliefs, personal space to family roles, presence to the value of education, spirituality
or concepts of health and healing (Lee, Cosby, deBaca, 2012). To address such diversity research,
on teaching practices, confirms there is a fundamental need for a Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
(CRP) (Lloyd, Lewthwaite, Osborne, Boon, 2015). In order to be an effective and culturally
responsive teacher I must address the cultural norms students represent through the support of the

The Grounds Of The Arena
Taxpayer can also bring a claim against the owner of the arena, the City of Milwaukee, for failing
to maintain the arena in a reasonably safe condition for spectators. Generally, the owner of a sports
venue must use reasonable care to protect spectators from the harm that exists due to the sports
event. However, extent of protection depends on the venue and the inherent risks of the sport. For
example, determining if a golf course is in a reasonably safe condition includes considering its
design, protections for spectators, and the manner in which the coarse is operated. In baseballit is
generally accepted that owners of stadiums owe a duty to protect spectators seating behind home
plate and on the baseline from foul balls. Further,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, it is likely that the safe place statute would be applied to it. Additionally, spectators
at the game, like those at a baseball game, will likely be found as frequenters. Thus, the City of
Milwaukee probably owed a duty to keep the arena as reasonably safe as possible under Wisconsin
s safe place statute.
Under the safe place statute, Taxpayer can make several claims that the City of Milwaukee was
negligent in maintaining the course. First, Taxpayer can assert that the City failed in their duty to
warn spectators of the risks of an errant ball. However, the National Basketball Association ( NBA
), the largest professional basketball in the world, does not require arena owners to warn
spectators of the risks for attending a basketball game, particularly those inherent with courtside
seats. Unfortunately, courts have yet to address the issue of to what extent, if any, an owner of a
basketball stadium has to warn spectators of potential risks. A determination of if a basketball
arena s owner duty to warn will likely require the court to look at unique circumstance of a
basketball game, using the duty to warn spectators in golf, baseball, and hockey as guidance but
not binding precedent. Ultimately, it is likely that a court would find that no duty to warn
spectators exist because the risks of setting courtside at a basketball game, literally feet from the
intense action of the game, should be

The Trinity And The Kingdom Of God
Preamble
Over the past few decades there has been much written, from both Catholic and Protestant
perspectives, on the doctrine of the Trinity . The consensus among these various writings has been
that, although the doctrine is important and central to the Christian faith and theology, it has been
neglected and made obscure, and has become a complex and theological technical term . This
obscurity renders the doctrine of the Trinity impossible to understand or apply to ordinary life.
Karl Rahner in his observations insists that modern Christians are almost mere monotheists , only
paying lip service to the doctrine of Trinity but lacking in the actual practices . Rahner s
observation has been widely acknowledged with the desire being to make a change .
The need to place the doctrine of the Trinity at the heart of Christianity would be considered the
epistemological and methodological safe ground upon which other doctrines are based. Since
JГєrgen Moltmann s book The Trinity and the Kingdom of Godwas published in 1980, the
propagation of a social understanding of God has gained propulsion. Kilby says that such an
understanding has become the new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

On Narcissism, The Uncanny, And Beyond The Pleasure P
I will focus on three essays by Sigmund Freud: On Narcissism, The Uncanny, and Beyond the
Pleasure Principle. By examining these three essays, the influence of Freud s theories can be
determined. These essays will determine what Freud offers literary critics today and how they use
his theories in their work. Many of Freud s theories overlap; his theories of the unconscious are
explored in Beyond the Pleasure Principle and The Uncanny. In studying Freud s theories, and
applying them to literature and literary criticisms, the progression of psychologyand the
understanding of humanity will become clear. Psychological theory studies the human mind. In
relation to literature, psychological theory studies the characters. What are their... Show more

Psychology has always had a deep impact on literature, so much that authors must use this theory to
delve into their characters motivations and actions. It is evident through the three Freud essays
discussed that topics and ideas seem to overlap. This is the nature of studying psychology; concepts
and ideas are connected to create a network that can be studied applied to not only the human mind,
but to the mind of an author or their fictional characters. In applying Sigmund Freud s ideas to
literature, critics can examine characters as if they were real. In our world, these characters are
not real. In the context of a work of fiction, for example, the characters are real. The confines of a
novel is the space in which they are alive. Examining characters as if they too have an unconscious
that compels them to unexplained actions allows critics, and readers of critics, to occupy that
character s headspace and become that character for a

Quantitative And Quantitative Methods Of Methods
This chapter illustrates the approaches in terms of techniques the study uses in collecting data,
followed with a detailed analysis and the way in which they will be interpreted. The chapter starts
with a brief discussion of how the general research designs for the whole study and its basic
layout. After that, a discussion of previous studies and models that were applied would be present
and an explanation of why this specific qualitative and quantitative study method is employed will
be following, as well as their suitability. Finally, the sources of data and their scope, reliability and
their limitations concerning this study will also be discussed in later this chapter.

the numerical relationship and correlation between the key variables, and to see if there is an
empirically significant relationship between them. To investigate the hypothesis empirically, this
paper uses an up to date database on key variables including GDP per capita, aid effectiveness,
governance indicators, and net official development assistance (ODA) per capita, which were
developed by the World Bank and OECD.

What are Industrial Relations?
Industrial relations have become a complex problem of modern society. In order to have
industrial progression and a better economy, it will be impossible to obtain without the
cooperation of all workers coming together to foster a good and harmonious relationship.
Therefore, it is the interest of all people to create and maintain a good relationship between
employees and employers, which in the 1950s, the Dunlop s model was formed and used as a
guide to creating and fostering the good relationships in the industrial society for a better economy

the ring critique Essay
The movie The Ring was a horror film that I found to be a major disappointment. The opening
scene is probably one of the best in the whole movie, which in my opinion is pathetic. When the
young girl in the beginning was killed seven days after watching the tape because her heart stopped
after seeing Samara, I thoughtto myself Wow, this may turn out to be an interesting movie, but
they ruined it as soon as they showed the girl dead in the closet looking green and disfigured. I

them all.
I didn t like how this tape was the reason people were dying because it is so unrealistic, which
made it hard for me to be scared or entertained by the plot at all. I also think that the movie went
way to far in depth on such a narrow topic. This movie could have easily been shortened, which
could have made it much more interesting and exhilarating. The opening scene where the girl
slowly went towards the bathroom as the water slowly trickled out towards her foot and grabbed
for the door handle was very suspenseful, but this was ruined because at this point your imagination
was running wild wondering what was going to happen, then BAM! you see pretty much nothing

There were a few highlights with this movie though; it wasn t a complete waste of eight dollars.

Application Of A Smart Home
ABSTRACT Residential area consume a lot of energy and electricity. The lack of energy
resources give impact to the rise of energy cost, thus to have a convenient home is extremely
important in the future. One of the way to reduce the costs in this issue is by using the energy
efficiently. The idea of energy saving is applied in the concept of a smart home. This project
aims to develop an algorithm to estimate the energy plans for future periods in a smart home in
order to achieve energy efficiency. Using the Household Demand Side Management (DSM)
systems, the total usage of energy in the future can be predicted according to the demand supply
in the smart home. Furthermore, it is estimated that the simultaneousness between production
and consumption of the electricity will be increasing. In this case, the house owner should be
able to manage and plan to use the electricity wisely. Powerful tools such as MATLAB / Simulink
allow the design, analysis and simulation of this project. This project will in divided into various
stages including researching, experimenting, modelling, testing and designing in order to

Similarities Between The Alamo And The Battle Of San Jacinto
The Battle of Two Paintings
Remember the Alamo! This instantly iconic decree of hope and patriotism was yelled by Texan
soldiers as they fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, the deciding battle in the Texas war for
independence. The battle only lasted eighteen short minutes, and it was a Texan victory, causing
them to gain independence from Mexico. Those two events, the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle
of San Jacinto, inspired many people in many different ways, including Henry Arthur McArdle.
McArdle was a painter who would go on to paint two very famous paintings, The Battle of San
Jacinto and Dawn at the Alamo. While both of these paintings depict very similar scenes and have
the same techniques and composition, there are differences in both that make each painting unique.

another Mexican flag raises as the Texasflag is tossed to the ground. Through all this, at the bottom

they are outnumbered and their flag is lowered, they are still fighting. On the right side, it shows a
man much larger than the others, shooting a man holding a Mexican flag. This figure represents

Analysis Of Arundhati Roy s The God Of Small Things
The relationship between language and resistance in Arundhati Roy s The God of Small Things, is
a site of continuous contest and struggle. Roy assumes a position within Western discourse to
communicate her ideas, all the while challenging and rejecting the very structure she inhabits.
Through her writing, rather than seeking to enter the canon of postcolonial literature, Roy strives to
redefine it. Throughout the narrative, she subverts the rules and boundaries of language, internally
pursuing a desire to resist both her colonial inheritance and the systematic oppression of Indian
society. She fashions a language of energy and oppositionality to the colonial legacy through a
construction and critique of the text s cultural and imperial inheritance. Through language, Roy
finds ways to resist any dichotomy that posits a correct way of being by writing to both counter her
native cultureand also to honour it. This essay will discuss how Roy manipulates the colonial
language into a tool of resistance from the colonial language through her acceptance, subversion and
subjugation of India s imperial inheritance.
Roy is very aware that the language of the coloniser is what unites India. Throughout the novel, Roy
is faced with the dilemma of defending the value of her native culture against the universality of the
English language. Critics have consistently articulated that language is an active site of conflict in
post colonial discourse. Literary theorist Bill Ashcroft argues

Teenage Adoletic Development And The Effects Of Teenage...
Humans are naturally inclined to explore the unknown and get to know more people. Some of the
people they meet they may feel attracted to and care to date them. This is completely normal for
the average human to do. Where it becomes a bit more complicated is in the teenage
demographics. Teenagers tend to try out relationships to see what it really takes to be devoted to
someone and to practice relationship skills for the future. These decisions made in adolescencewill
shape the decisions that will be made in the future. Literature plays a fine role in displaying effects
of teenage romance. In Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet work to build a
relationship at a young age, but because of their complicated family problems, it ultimately ends in
disaster. While it lasted, their relationship serves to teach them newer concepts and helped them to
grow new and healthy traits. Despite the potential heartbreak, romantic relationships are a healthy
part of teenage development. When looking at the science behind the teenage brain, it is completely
healthy for teens to explore new romantic relationships. Numerous lab tests have been conducted to
monitor the decision making processes of young adults. Brown University s Michael Frank was
able to explain the key parts to an adolescent s brain development. Through studies, he was able to
identify how the prefrontal cortex, the decision maker of the brain, tends to lag behind in
development. The prefrontal cortex plays a

Causes Of Desertification
Desertification is a dynamic process where viable soil becomes degraded land typically resulting
from human activities such as deforestation, inappropriate agriculture, or simply due to due
climatic variations like drought. Desertification occurs globally in a variety of regions, yet not all
regions are alike, thus different forces that may be responsible for desertification. For example, in a
region like Africa there are huge atmospheric cycles that occur near the equator that pushes dry air
towards Africa. Other forms of desertification can be driven in this area by the extensive agriculture
that sustains Africa s growing population. It may also be the lack of advanced technology that has
gave first world countries a competitive edge in assessing soils, increasing agricultural production,
and lowering pollution levels. In another region such as China, the result of desertification in places
around the country derive from toxic levels of pollution, human alteration of the land, and natural
causes. Though China may have advanced technology, they still have problems figuring out ways
to mitigate this problem due to their gigantic population size. Even the United Stateshas been
through a drastic event that caused a huge economic impact and left thousands of landowners
unable to farm and make revenue for many years. Although many of these regions have different
factors contributing to desertification, many similar trends can be seen that ultimately point to
desertification.

From the time the British first settled the continent to the present, the Aboriginal people of
Australia and the English speaking Australian government have had a rocky relationship. For many
years, aboriginal Australians experienced much discrimination and racism. Like Native Americans
in the United States, the Aborigines were displaced from their tribal lands and forced into
designated settlements. This was all part of an attempt on the part of the government and the
European settlers to eradicate Aboriginal culture. Though overtly racist policies have now been

Ensuring that Aboriginal children are able to become fully proficient in Standard Australian
English is important, since it greatly expands the number of opportunities available to them in
higher education, employment, and access to services (McKay, 300). Aboriginal parents are
eager for these children to gain access to these opportunities through mastery of Standard
Australian English, but do not wish their own languages to be lost in the process (McKay, 305).
Aboriginal Australians, even those who do not themselves speak an Aboriginal language, show
great pride in their language as part of their cultural identity (McKay, 299). As such, it is
necessary for schools to display recognition of each language s intrinsic cultural value and
linguistic complexity and uniqueness (Gale, 282). Concrete evidence of the value of these
languages to Aboriginal people is shown by the fact that knowledge of an Aboriginal language
decreases the likelihood of excessive alcohol consumption and illicit drug use in 15 to 24 year old
Aborigines (McKay, 300). In the past, well implemented bilingual education programs have resulted
in a stronger relationship between schools and their surrounding communities, as well as an
increase in the interest of Aboriginal people in becoming teachers (McKay, 312). Teachers who
have been involved in bilingual education programs know the positive effects they have on

Analysis Of Jonathan Rauch s Article In Defense Of...
In the article In Defense of Prejudice , Jonathan Rauch argues that society should not seek to
eradicate racism, which is impossible to do, and other forms of prejudice, but rather find how to
make the best of it. There is a gray area between a prejudiced belief and a controversial one, and it
is impossible to know which belief is prejudice and which is truth. Rauch argues that intellectual
pluralism permits the expression of various forms of bigotry and avoids any attempt to eradicate
prejudice, because this would force everyone to share the same prejudice. However, the new anti
pluralism , which Rauch names purism , enforces the belief that society cannot function properly
until prejudice is eradicated. At universities, in school curriculums, criminal law, and workplaces,
the use of certain words are permitted as an attempt to eliminate prejudice. However, as Rauch

Custer s Revenge at the Battle of Little Bighorn Essay
Custer s Revenge
The Battle of Little Bighorn is one of the most significant battles in American history. This is not
because of the weaponry used, the casualties, or even the battle strategies. This is because the battle
is one of the only big battles that Native Americans won against the U.S. military. After this battle,
the Native American power in the West ended. Ironically, by winning the Battle of Little Bighorn,
the Sioux and Cheyenne actually sped up the downfall of Native American power. In 1876, after a
treaty dispute, President Ulysses S. Grant issued an ultimatum stating that all Native Americans had
to be on the Great Sioux Reservation by January 31st. When this ultimatum was not met, the United
States declared war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he was discovered by one of the Sioux, he ordered his regiment to attack. Custer was
overwhelmed by the number of Native Americans and he and his whole regiment died on what is
now known as Custer Hill. The other force barely escaped and suffered casualties as well. In the
end, the Battle of Little Bighorn was a disaster for the United States.
When the American public heard of the slaughter of Custer and his troops, their main reaction
was disbelief and outrage. Custer had been a celebrity to them. He had been the great boy
general during the Civil War who liked to play tricks on his fellow generals. One time when he
was fighting against a friend from military school, he captured his friend s supply train and
showed up the next day wearing the friend s confederate uniform. Custer even sent a note to him
about the uniform being too big. Custer was so popular during the war that he was singled out
to accept General Robert E. Lee s white flag of surrender. After the Civil War he had less
success, but he still won a few major battles against the Native Americans and never strayed too
far from the public s eye. To America he was a great boy hero and when he died it was a huge
blow to the morale of the country. They could not believe that such a great commander could be
killed by a bunch of savages and all anyone could think of was revenge. For the Americans the best
way of accomplishing this was extermination of the Native Americans. Immediately after

William Chandler s Farewell My Lovely
Detective fiction at its finest is displayed through the famous novel by Raymond Chandler called,
Farewell My Lovely. Chandler published this novel in 1940 with every intention of giving his
readers something dark and mysterious to dive into. Throughout the novel, the kind of protagonist
that we naturally expect to encounter, is much more the opposite. The unconventional hero in this
case would be the suggested protagonist names Philip Marlowe. He plays a cynical man who
appears to not need any additional company but his own when solving the crimes committed
around town. That is one of the most appealing features that caught my attention about Marlowe.
He entertains the reader with his bravery and ambiguous heroism throughout the corrupt streets
of L.A. Corruption, murder and this complicated character guiding us through the thick of these
cases are the three key aspects that make Chandler s novels so appealing. The association that a
reader has with an anti hero of a novel is very similar to a love hate relationship. We want to love
him for the gritty, yet effective work, but for one who drinks as hard and heavy as Philip
Marlowe does, its hard to keep their best interest at heart. Chandler isn t the only author who tries
to make the reader root for the bad guy. A few classic examples of this would be our frequently
discussed Detective Sherlock Holmes, and the recent TV series called Breaking Bad.
Sherlock Holmes is a great example of an anti hero. He reminds me much

Cultural Relativism
To debate or argue on Cultural Relativism first we need to define what cultural relativism is.
Cultural relativism is a concept stating that any individual s views and beliefs should be understood
in terms of his own culture by everyone else. It denies the superiority of any culture over others on
any means. Different cultures have their own different moral codes and values. Those can be
similar or very different from other culture s moral code. Hence the concept of universally true or
universally right is disregarded by this concept. It says that every culture s code is right in its place,
the truth is relative. For a cultural relativism supporter, the right thing to do for anyone will be the
one which is stated in the person s culture, no matter what he thinks is right or what the world says
about it. The great sociologist William Graham Sumner says that the right thing is what our
ancestors have been used and have handed us. The culture and tradition gives a warrant, it should or
need not to be put in question. He says that the notion of truth is inside a culture. Whatever is right

Comparison Of Thymus With Unhealthy Spleen
Introduction
Purpose of this practical is to compare tissues in healthy spleen and thymus with unhealthy spleen

Lymphoid organs consist of primary (thymus, bone marrow) and secondary (spleen, tonsils,

depend on antigens such as thymus, and the secondary organs like spleen depend on antigens.

Now think that other countries are trying to win your favor to help them battle neighboring
countries for land. So they try and win your favor with gifts, and there is no better gift back in
the time of pharoses and king than Ivory. Ivory back in those times symbolized many things but
the most important on was wealth so as a result everyone wanted it. So you have your scribe
write down who give you the best piece of ivory or any other type of material good. In the end
whom ever has given you the best gifts has won your favor as result you go out and help them

One hour away. Sloan, Iowa. Winna Vegas Casino. We like to say it s a fun way to get away from
college life, hang out with friends, and attempt to add a little extra to the pocket books. Many kids
attending Buena Vista University have made at least one trip to the Winna VegasCasino. This
casino is 70 miles from Storm Lake and the age requirement to gain admittance is only eighteen. As
an alternative to drinking or the bar scene, individuals view gambling as a relaxing and entertaining
past time. However, we recently encountered an article by Pathlights entitled The Case Against
Gambling . Apparently what we thought was a fun night out, is causing otherwise good citizens to
perish under the gambling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are all statistics regarding to the negative aspect of gambling. Is there anything positive about
gambling? At this point one wouldn t think so.
Besides stating the fact that gambling puts money in the wrong hands and that the chances of
winning are not very good, Pathlights goes on to say that gambling causes many other problems
that are destroying America. Compulsive gamblers are likely to have been married three or more
times because of the problems gambling brings home to the household. The suicide rate for
spouses of compulsive gamblers is one hundred fifty times higher than the national average. It is
estimated that the average compulsive gambler affects four to ten other people, especially the
children. Twenty five percent of compulsive gambler s kids show behavioral or adjustment
problems in school, use alcohol and other drugs, or are arrested (PATHLIGHTS). Pathlights makes
a strong argument defying gambling. Gambling seems to be an impossible way to earn money and
the money spent at casinos could be used for programs that are clearly more important. Also,
gambling is a downfall to society. It causes family problems and affects the children of gamblers.
Is there really a positive side to gambling?
Gambling Is The Answer
One of the main reasons that Pathlights does not support gambling is because money is not used in
the right programs. America citizens want to see programs such

Kitagawa Utamaro And Paul Gauguin s Use Of Color Techniques
Describe specifically what the term arbitrary color means, a color used at random for objects that
have a common color, such as, a tree has green leaves, but we choose to make the leave purple or
making the sun black, the clouds green, or the sky yellow, etc.
Who was the first artist to employ the technique? I would have to say Katsushika Hokusai,
Kitagawa Utamaro, and AndВЇo Hiroshige had a role in the technique. The technique was used in
AndВЇo Hiroshige color woodcut print, ( Moon Pine at Ueno from One Hundred Views of Famous
Places in Edo ), (Pg. 27), because of the color use. The colors seem to be out of place, such as, the
sky s appearance being that of black, blue, and green, also the tree appears to have a redder tent
than what we would normally see in nature. Hiroshige and other Japanese artists had gotten young
artist thinking about color, arbitrary color, and pure color. One of the artist that took the color
techniques from color woodcut prints and Japanese prints was Paul Gauguin. Gauguin was truly
the first to employ arbitrary color techniques, which can be seen in his (Vision after the Sermon),
(Pg. 60), with vivid red paint in the back ground, splashes of green and blue tenting on the nuns
faces, these colors are not known in nature, and they are non descriptive. It just isn t natural to see
these colors placed this way. Thus, Gauguin s paintings influenced younger artist and affected their
ideas in the Nabis and Fauve periods. Later movements adopted this

Diels-Alder Reaction Lab Report
This week in lab a Diels Alder reaction produced 4 cyclohexene 1, 2 dicarboxylic anhydride by
combining 1,3 butadiene and maleic anhydride. They reaction basically combined 4 pi electrons
from a diene and 2 pi elections from a double bond to produce an alkene ring. The diene must be
in s cis conformation for the reaction to even happen. All of the p orbitals, both from the diene and
the double bond must line up so it can attack from top or bottom, which creates a chair structure.
Because of this, the trans conformation is favored due to the lesser steric interactions. As for the 2,3
difluorobutadiene and 1,3 butadiene, the rate of the reaction would be slower. The 1,3 butadiene is
unstable, which makes it extremely reactive. The use of the

Describe The Importance Of Road Safety Inspections
Road Safety Inspections
Road safety inspections are important. The material explicitly describes the importance of safety
inspections. Without road inspections, the streets and highways would be a chaos for commuters
(Ward, Otto Linkenbach, 2014). Just imagined if the overgrown shrubs and trees hid the traffic road
signs and directional signs pointing in the wrong way. This would be a recipe for disaster.
Additional lives would be at risk by this potential roadway hazards. Identifying potential roadway
hazards timely may reduce the mortality rate (Ward, Otto Linkenbach, 2014).
The Office of Traffic Safety and other similar agencies are working diligently to develop a remedial
measure to save drivers lives (DOT, 2011). To alleviate the road hazards in Minnesota, the road
safety inspector conducts routine safety inspections. The safety inspector examines the highways,
construction signs, bridges, and obstructions that may block the motorists view (DOT, 2011). The
State of Minnesota is vulnerable to various potential hazards. These hazards are associated with
man made and natural disasters that threatens the loss of life and property.
Inspector Role
An inspection is a critical element that detects and responds to potential hazards. For example, the
inspector ensures that the road signs are visible both day and night. In Minnesota, public safety
department encourages the citizens to report any potential road hazards like potholes and damaged
road signs.

Effects Of Hormones On Learning Performance
As an adolescent, hormones are raging and as their brains are continuing to develop hormones play
a big role in their future learning and memory. The hormonal fluctuations of adolescent stress
coupled with their gonadal hormone ups and downs, impact their learning capabilities and memory
retrieval. Males with the predominance of testosteronelearn in a unique way and exhibit certain
advantages like spatial learning over females. Females on the other hand, with the predominance of
estrogenexhibit their own unique learning capabilities and styles which is all dependent on their
estrous cycles, pregnancy, and postpartum. These differences between males and females have the
potential of greatly impacting curriculum and teaching.

There is a lot of evidence of sex differences in learning and memory, particularly in spatial tasks,
although there are species differences.
Estrogens appear to enhance spatial learning and memory. As previous mentioned, there are sex
differences in hippocampus dependent cognition tasks, implying that there are sex hormones
involved. There is sufficient evidence demonstrating that estrogen interacts with the reproductive
cycle and in turn modulates hippocampal learning, memory and neurogenesis. However, the way
in which estrogen effects learning and memory, from adolescence to adulthood, is dependent upon
the type of estrogen, the duration, timing and dose of treatment, and the influence the effects of
estrogen had on cognition and neurogenesis. There seems to be a correlation between spatial
learning, estrogen and ones life cycle (age). Typically spatial learning is favorable in males,
however, in terms of females spatial learning differs based on ones estrous cycle. The reason for
this is because as both estradiol and progesterone fluctuate during ones estrous and menstrual cycle,
each hormone contributes differently to learning and memory. In recent studies examining the
relationship between estradiol and learning and memory, it was found that motherhood enhanced
spatial learning and memory.

High School Drum Research Paper
For the last ten years, drums have been ringing in my ears. When I started I was a little bored out
because I only knew basic beats, until middle school. I don t know how but I got into heavy metal,
with the band named Avenged Sevenfold . The drummer was phenomenal, so I was inspired to get
behind the drumset and learn the songs. So I would consider myself a self taught drummer.
When sophomore year of started, I got into a heavy punk band named Infadel . They didn t care
how old I was, it was the skill they were looking for. A few practices, and I lost interest because it
was repetitive for every song, and I ending up quitting. The reason I loved metal is because the
instrumentals and the melodies, but this band was just power and screaming. Then junior year
came, and the band contacted me and said We found a person who is the same age and skill level
as you, you should meet him, and make your own band and music! So I gave it a shot, and it was
great. Except for the alcohol and drugs which I would always refuse, I told the band I only in for
the music. But busy times came and I had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I honestly would come back to my high school Silver Creek to be a drum tech. As a current band
leader for that school band, I hold responsibilities and I want to keep those responsibilities
coming back as an alumni. Since I always am on most people s case when they play to point
things out to them, the band knows my name, and knows why I love this class. I love to teach
younger students so they can pick up a new hobby and hopefully pursue it. I used to see myself
to be a famous drummer in like a heavy metal band in the future, but I see a brighter future
teaching and doing what I love. Music is what pushes me and entertains me no matter what the
genre or style it is. It is a beautiful sight to see the results at the end of each

(hereinafter NEDs) and lay down the issues that they face and the remedies that have been
proposed. Hence, in order to understand the role of a NEDs, one must be able to look at their

(Consider aspects such as mobility, realism, artistic intent, and so on.) Would you make any changes to the costume for a theater production? Why or why not? If i were to design a costume for the tin man, some advantages would be price, and portability, but some of the disadvantaged would be the way it may reflect light and also if it s comfortable for the one who wears it. 2. In the scene where Dorothy says goodbye to Oz (time code 1:37:38), what is the mood of the scene? How does the filmmaker achieve this mood? • 3. System Thinking Is The Process Of Understanding How Things... System thinking is the process of understanding how things influence one another within a system. Russell L. Ackoff, Dr. W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Senge s define, think differently, and have different approaches of system thinking. Russell L. Ackoff was born on February 12, 1919 in Philadelphia. He was a pioneer in the field of operations research, systems thinking and managementscience. (Russell L. Ackoff) He received his bachelor degree in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in 1941. In 1942 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army. After his return he went on to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his doctorate in philosophy of science in 1947 as C. West Churchman s first doctoral student. (Russell L. Ackoff) Russell L. Ackoff says the typical way management has been trained in the western world is to divide any complex system into parts, and then try to manage each part as best as you can. If these were to be divided into parts we would believe two things which are any problem can be solved, and the system as a whole will behave well. Ackoff goes on to say these are false because it s possible to improve the performance of each part taken separately and destroy the system at the same time. (Production Management: A Total Quality Management Approach) Ackoff defines a system as a whole containing two or more parts that contains the five conditions. The first condition is the whole has one or more important properties or functions. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Irish Immigration In The 19th Century Essay An American Immigrant Journey: A Look at Asian and Irish Immigration in the 19th Century Many different people have many different stories to tell when talking about how they ended up in America. Some people had the choice to migrate to America in hope of a better life, while others were forced against their will to do so. Being American in America seems much more than just being a United Statescitizen, it has to do more with how they fit in with those who call themselves American. Re word The Irish immigration in the 19th century was a necessary move for those who wanted to live. Ireland underwent a famine and many of the Irish were starving and dying due to lack of nutrients and disease that took over Ireland. Many Americans had problems with these new Irish immigrants simply because it seemed like they provided America with no benefit at all. Not only did the Irish come to America not being able to provide benefit for the country, but they were also very Catholic while in the 19th century, America was a Protestant country. These are two probably probable? reasons the Irish were discriminated against throughout the 19th century. When they first arrived, to the Americans, it seemed like the Irish could not be trusted.... • 5. The Hurt Locker, Directed by Kathryn Bigelow Essay As most of you know by now the movie The Hurt Locker won the Oscar for movie of the year, and this makes me very angry. My civilian friends keep asking me why I m so mad, because most of them enjoyed watching it. Simply put it s because the movie is full of lies, exaggerations, and ugly people. But it s a movie they say, of course it s not realistic . That s strange.. because the back of The Hurt Lockerbox says Powerfully Realistic . Yet this movie is about as far from realism that a movie can be (this claim includes all movies about time travel, and vampires, but excludes any movies starring the Wayans brothers). • 6. The American Liberal Democratic Values Essay American Liberal Democratic Values I.The definitions of democracy and liberalism Liberalism and democracy are two different concepts, liberalism is a political philosophy which is based on the principle of individual freedom, it calls for guarantees of the rights of the individual, including freedom from arbitrary authority, freedom of religion, the right to own and exchange private property, rights to equal opportunity in health care, education, and employment, and the rights to political participation and representation. While democracy is a set of political procedures involving participation and competition. Most democracies are liberal democracies to some degree. because political participation, competition, and accountability are perhaps the best guarantees that individual freedoms will be preserved, thus the terms liberal and democracy often go hand in hand. II. Liberal democracy the U.S. goal U.S. policies aim to boost the spread of liberal democratic values. In the nineteenth century, the U.S. didn t play an important role in global governance, as the geographical reach of the United States political influence expanded, liberal democracy promotion turned into a major part of U.S. foreign policy, the aim of promoting democracy abroad had been a core element in how the United States exercises its international power. • 7. How Rural Slaves Lived And Worked On Brazilian Sugar... Throughout the 16th century, as there was a demographic collapse of the indigenous population, there was now a new demand for slave labor in Latin America. In Brazil, the Portuguese needed a large workforce to cultivate sugar plantations. As a result, numerous slaves from Africa were imported to work on large plantationfields. In various plantations, rural slaves experienced harsh working and living conditions. Few slaves had a high life expectancy. Robert Edgar Conrad in Children of God s Fire, shares some primary sources that dealt with the types of environments and conditions many slaves faced and encountered in Brazil. The sources also gave insight into the regulations and economics/business of the slave trade. Conrad states that rural Brazil was a hell for blacks (Conrad 54). Many slaves dealt with extremely harsh conditions just to keep the European market in Latin American growing and profitable. This paper will analyze how rural slaves lived and worked on Brazilian sugar plantations. To start, in Brazil the Portuguese become convinced that full scale exploitation of the land was imperative for the safety of their entire overseas empire. Sugar cultivation was the ideal crop to guarantee the existence of a profitable colony. As a result, the Portuguese dominated the Atlantic slave trade. • 9. Racial Stereotypes And Its Negative Effects On Our Society Humanity as a whole cannot help but judge one another. A stereotype is a fixed belief about someone s religion, gender, or social group. Stereotypes can have positive and negative affects on our society. Often times, people use stereotypes to belittle a group of people. An example of a racial stereotype would include all Hispanics being illegal immigrants. Racial stereotypesalways favor the raceof the holder and put down other races. People use racial stereotypes because it is human nature to recognize patterns. When seeing these patterns within a specific race people often tend to immediately associate him or herself within that society. From a positive point of view stereotypes can give confidence and favor them above a certain group or class of people. Stereotypes such as Asians have high IQs can make them have confidence in themselves. often times it is hard to live up to a positive stereotype. Although we think positive stereotyping is a good thing it really is not. Most positive stereotyping sets the bar unrealistically high and only leaves room for failure. Another example of a positive stereotype with a negative affect is All black people are good at sports. If a particular African American is not good at sports then they will feel less than adequate. Positive stereotypes can be depressing to individuals who are supposed to posses them but fall short. In the year 1756, Mozart of Salzburg, Austria came to life. Mozart was destined for musicand when his father, Leopold, saw this truth, he devoted himself to improving Mozart s gift. By the age of four, Mozart was composing piano concertos. Mozart and his sister were taken all over the country by their father, which enriched and advanced his musical education. At the age of thirteen, Mozart had his first musical job, but after twelve year was fired. When Mozart moved to Vienna, he met Joseph Haydn, who was a mentor to him. To truly experience freedom in his music, Beethoven had to experience tragedies. When Beethoven s mother died and when he realized, at thirty one, that he was losing his hearing, Beethoven began to express the freedom of emotion in his music. Unlike Mozart, Beethoven had economic stability, but he did not have the ability to write a song instantly. However, Beethoven composed nine symphonies, the fifth being the most famous. • 11. Themes In The House On Mango Street Journal 5 In the novel, the House on Mango Street, Esperanza constantly thinks about her dream of success and leaving Mango Street. The unfortunate situations and circumstances of those who live in her neighborhood increase her strive for this future. For instance, she doesn t want to chose marriage as an easy way out of the neighborhood, like what most women on Mango Street choose to do. Moreover, she wants to obtain success and independence from the neighborhood on her own. Through her writing and education, she defies the typical fate most of the people in the neighborhood end up with. Cisneros uses the thematic idea of dreaming to reveal the theme that a person may have to contain the initiative to take a more challenging path to obtain success. In the novel, people tend to rely on chance and luck to change their fate rather than taking action to improve their circumstances. For example, Esperanza s mother claims that [w]hen [they] win the lottery (86), they can buy a house on the hills (86). Waiting to win a lottery is impractical and Esperanza realizes this because she s tired of looking at what [they] can t have. (86). Consequently, Esperanza becomes even more determined to own [her] own house. (87). Esperanza knows that she has to work to get the house, not wait on lotteries, which are unreliable. Another example of people s dependency on chance to improve their situation would be Marin. Marin waits for a car to stop, a star to fall, someone to change her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But, when she finds out herself is a Divergent, she can sense that something is running off. There is a social norm that that the divergent is outskirt. And even the test administrator warns her never tell anyone her result shows as Divergent because this will create chaos. As mentioned, the society under Abnegation government is not just and fair, it even does not reach the view of Mockus by recognizing of legal, moral and social norms that may regulate citizens behaviour . Each faction is required to focus on the responsibility and they have different values, they do not agree to each other core virtues; therefore, one faction is not willing to communicate with the other faction. Although during the period of ruling, there is no war but it certainly builds up the disapproval from the Erudite faction to the moral normand social norm which they think they should be the one ruling the society with the intelligence more than being a selfless. Also, the Erudite finds out that the Abnegation leader is actually not upholding the norms of selfless as he abused his own son which leading his child to turn away from the family. Consequently, the Erudite tries to create new social norms; however, they did not succeed. They should see the life as sacred and they should be following the Mayor Mockus footstep by acting to the new rules personally, instead of hiding behind and deceive people to do their work. Another reason that the Erudite plan is not successful because their inner demon creates too much violence and opposing voices. From the Week 4 reading The Better Angels of Our Nature , there is a sentence which is very suitable for the setting of the novel. Steven Pinker wrote that even in peaceable societies, people are fascinated by the logic of bluff and threat ... the vulnerabilities of a human body and how they can be exploited or shielded. Even the initial state of government is trying to create the best peacefulness to the society, the desire of the Erudite has broken the harmony by creating violence. • 14. Reductive Materialism Reductive Materialism: Reductive materialism is a sub theory or a version of Physicalism. It suggests that sensations of the mind correlate exactly to physical movements of the brain. In other words, every thought or experience which occurs in your mind, can be found as activity in your brain. This does not mean however, that the mind and the brain are the same thing, just that they are both different experiences of the same thing. For example, a neuroscientist may be able to study your brain activity as you experience it in your mind. A problem with this theory when applied, is that two different people having the same thought, will have the identical brain activity. But the thoughts of one person are subjective to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However if these experiences are intangible, then they can t be exactly the same as the functioning of the brain, which is a tangible substance. The Two Marys analogy demonstrates this dispute of reductive materialism, as once the Mary has learned something by an experience or qualia , then that experience can t be a physical event in the brain. Eliminative Materialism: Eliminative Materialism argues that everything we believe about minds and conciousness does not exist (including belief itself), on the grounds that it cannot be empirically proved. The claim is that the understood laws or generalisations we use when we use terms of the mind , are false. For example, if someone talks about their feeling of pain, then they would call this statement Folk Psychology , meaning that the words are just used habitually and don t have any true meaning. They say that the problem is in the language we use to make sense of what we can t prove. This idea however, is not consistent, as it disputes the belief in anything, meaning the belief of eliminativism in itself cannot be believed. Similarly, believing in Nihilism is contradictory. Another problem with the argument is that it assumes empirical methods of experiment are always accurate and consistent, when we know that this is not always the case, and some physical events in the world are not caused by physical substances. • 16. Essay Factors Keeping China From Becoming Today s Super Power There are significant inhibiting factors keeping China from becoming today s world power. One of the main arguments is that China s economic success today is just a replica of the U.S. housing bubble before it crashed (Robinson). They are building faster than their expanding middle class can keep up with (Robinson), which was the exact problem the U.S. had right before the market crashed and they fell into a recession. China would have to slow their rapid expansion down in order to avoid crashing just like the U.S. did several years ago. Another argument against China s candidacy as hegemon is that they act too much like a bullied nation (Ng). China feels the need to react strongly when negative remarks are directed at them, which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would be near impossible for China to replace the western set of ideals with their own in today s established society. U.S. brands are also far more popular on the international scale. Products like Coke and corporations like McDonalds can be found worldwide, while China does not have products or chains like these. These U.S. companies show that the U.S. influence is widely spread today, however with China s current economic boom, it would not be impossible for a product or company to become popular internationally. China s current minimal militaristic approach suggests that they do not want to become a world power through force if necessary, and is instead focusing on their economic growth to further expand their influence. Today, there are people who claim that China is beginning to colonize Africa: a staggering 750,000 Chinese have settled in Africa over the past decade (Malone). Since Africa is home to an abundance of natural resources, China wants to expand within Africa in order to gain control over their loosely regulated trade market in order to gain more profits. • 17. What Are The Causes Of The War Of 1812 Essay Robins, Josh Mr. Sundermeier World Studies 9 April 8. 2016 The War of 1812 In this essay I will be discussing the major events and battles that took place during the War of 1812. It started in 1812 and lasted until the spring of 1815. There were three main causes for the war taking place, America trading with parts of Europe(France), the Impressment, and the possible desire on the part of the United States to annex Canada, The War of 1812 ended as a stalemate in the spring of 1815. • 18. The Importance Of A Learning Environment For An Effective... Definition: One of the most challenging tasks in being an effective teacher is to create a learning environment, which adequately addresses the needs of all students. Effective teachers must be responsive to a diverse range of student backgrounds, including linguistic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic (1.3 AITSL, 2011). In addition, an effective learning environment includes an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students learning needs and incorporates differentiated teaching methods to meet the needs of specific students abilities (1.4 1.5 AITSL, 2011). Therefore, to be an effective teacher aspiring to meet the Every Student Succeeding policy (Education Queensland, 2016), in addition to well developed content and pedagogical knowledge I will require a broad knowledge, understanding, and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages (2.4 AITSL, 2011). Cultural diversity is multidimensional and may range from, language to beliefs, personal space to family roles, presence to the value of education, spirituality or concepts of health and healing (Lee, Cosby, deBaca, 2012). To address such diversity research, on teaching practices, confirms there is a fundamental need for a Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) (Lloyd, Lewthwaite, Osborne, Boon, 2015). In order to be an effective and culturally responsive teacher I must address the cultural norms students represent through the support of the EATSIPS ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Grounds Of The Arena Taxpayer can also bring a claim against the owner of the arena, the City of Milwaukee, for failing to maintain the arena in a reasonably safe condition for spectators. Generally, the owner of a sports venue must use reasonable care to protect spectators from the harm that exists due to the sports event. However, extent of protection depends on the venue and the inherent risks of the sport. For example, determining if a golf course is in a reasonably safe condition includes considering its design, protections for spectators, and the manner in which the coarse is operated. Thus, the City of Milwaukee probably owed a duty to keep the arena as reasonably safe as possible under Wisconsin s safe place statute. Under the safe place statute, Taxpayer can make several claims that the City of Milwaukee was negligent in maintaining the course. First, Taxpayer can assert that the City failed in their duty to warn spectators of the risks of an errant ball. However, the National Basketball Association ( NBA ), the largest professional basketball in the world, does not require arena owners to warn spectators of the risks for attending a basketball game, particularly those inherent with courtside seats. Unfortunately, courts have yet to address the issue of to what extent, if any, an owner of a basketball stadium has to warn spectators of potential risks. A determination of if a basketball arena s owner duty to warn will likely require the court to look at unique circumstance of a basketball game, using the duty to warn spectators in golf, baseball, and hockey as guidance but not binding precedent. Ultimately, it is likely that a court would find that no duty to warn spectators exist because the risks of setting courtside at a basketball game, literally feet from the intense action of the game, should be ... The consensus among these various writings has been that, although the doctrine is important and central to the Christian faith and theology, it has been neglected and made obscure, and has become a complex and theological technical term . This obscurity renders the doctrine of the Trinity impossible to understand or apply to ordinary life. Karl Rahner in his observations insists that modern Christians are almost mere monotheists , only paying lip service to the doctrine of Trinity but lacking in the actual practices . Rahner s observation has been widely acknowledged with the desire being to make a change . The need to place the doctrine of the Trinity at the heart of Christianity would be considered the epistemological and methodological safe ground upon which other doctrines are based. Roy assumes a position within Western discourse to communicate her ideas, all the while challenging and rejecting the very structure she inhabits. Through her writing, rather than seeking to enter the canon of postcolonial literature, Roy strives to redefine it. Throughout the narrative, she subverts the rules and boundaries of language, internally pursuing a desire to resist both her colonial inheritance and the systematic oppression of Indian society. She fashions a language of energy and oppositionality to the colonial legacy through a construction and critique of the text s cultural and imperial inheritance. Through language, Roy finds ways to resist any dichotomy that posits a correct way of being by writing to both counter her native cultureand also to honour it. This essay will discuss how Roy manipulates the colonial language into a tool of resistance from the colonial language through her acceptance, subversion and subjugation of India s imperial inheritance. Roy is very aware that the language of the coloniser is what unites India. Throughout the novel, Roy is faced with the dilemma of defending the value of her native culture against the universality of the English language. Some of the people they meet they may feel attracted to and care to date them. This is completely normal for the average human to do. Where it becomes a bit more complicated is in the teenage demographics. Teenagers tend to try out relationships to see what it really takes to be devoted to someone and to practice relationship skills for the future. These decisions made in adolescencewill shape the decisions that will be made in the future. Literature plays a fine role in displaying effects of teenage romance. In Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet work to build a relationship at a young age, but because of their complicated family problems, it ultimately ends in disaster. While it lasted, their relationship serves to teach them newer concepts and helped them to grow new and healthy traits. Despite the potential heartbreak, romantic relationships are a healthy part of teenage development. When looking at the science behind the teenage brain, it is completely healthy for teens to explore new romantic relationships. Causes Of Desertification Desertification is a dynamic process where viable soil becomes degraded land typically resulting from human activities such as deforestation, inappropriate agriculture, or simply due to due climatic variations like drought. Desertification occurs globally in a variety of regions, yet not all regions are alike, thus different forces that may be responsible for desertification. For example, in a region like Africa there are huge atmospheric cycles that occur near the equator that pushes dry air towards Africa. Other forms of desertification can be driven in this area by the extensive agriculture that sustains Africa s growing population. It may also be the lack of advanced technology that has gave first world countries a competitive edge in assessing soils, increasing agricultural production, and lowering pollution levels. In another region such as China, the result of desertification in places around the country derive from toxic levels of pollution, human alteration of the land, and natural causes. Though China may have advanced technology, they still have problems figuring out ways to mitigate this problem due to their gigantic population size. Even the United Stateshas been through a drastic event that caused a huge economic impact and left thousands of landowners unable to farm and make revenue for many years. Although many of these regions have different factors contributing to desertification, many similar trends can be seen that ultimately point to desertification. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Chandler published this novel in 1940 with every intention of giving his readers something dark and mysterious to dive into. Throughout the novel, the kind of protagonist that we naturally expect to encounter, is much more the opposite. The unconventional hero in this case would be the suggested protagonist names Philip Marlowe. He plays a cynical man who appears to not need any additional company but his own when solving the crimes committed around town. That is one of the most appealing features that caught my attention about Marlowe. He entertains the reader with his bravery and ambiguous heroism throughout the corrupt streets of L.A. Corruption, murder and this complicated character guiding us through the thick of these cases are the three key aspects that make Chandler s novels so appealing. The association that a reader has with an anti hero of a novel is very similar to a love hate relationship. We want to love him for the gritty, yet effective work, but for one who drinks as hard and heavy as Philip Marlowe does, its hard to keep their best interest at heart. Cultural relativism is a concept stating that any individual s views and beliefs should be understood in terms of his own culture by everyone else. It denies the superiority of any culture over others on any means. Different cultures have their own different moral codes and values. Those can be similar or very different from other culture s moral code. Hence the concept of universally true or universally right is disregarded by this concept. It says that every culture s code is right in its place, the truth is relative. For a cultural relativism supporter, the right thing to do for anyone will be the one which is stated in the person s culture, no matter what he thinks is right or what the world says about it. You eventually stop walk and you find yourself in the throne room and right before you see a chair but, not just not any chair the most elegant chair you have ever see with your own two eyes. This chair glistens with jewels and some sort of white material you are not familiar with. Now think that other countries are trying to win your favor to help them battle neighboring countries for land. So they try and win your favor with gifts, and there is no better gift back in the time of pharoses and king than Ivory. Ivory back in those times symbolized many things but the most important on was wealth so as a result everyone wanted it. So you have your scribe write down who give you the best piece of ivory or any other type of material good. In the end whom ever has given you the best gifts has won your favor as result you go out and help them conquer their enemy. Their enemy may have tried to buy your favor as well, but since their gift was not as good as your new ally s gift they dictated their own fate. Kings would have written records of these times of war and bribery so they could in the end know who they should support. As a result this is textual evidence that we can tell where ivories could have come from. Now the reason the style of the piece by which I mean the motifs on the pieces give away where the ivory is from is because what a motif is. A motif essentially means the themes of the work and message that the artists are trying to convey. Generally motifs of work are indigenous to areas where the artists are from for example. You are not going to see on Egyptian art depictions of Thor the thunder god of Nordic mythology because that does not pertain to the artist. The motifs of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Kitagawa Utamaro And Paul Gauguin s Use Of Color Techniques Describe specifically what the term arbitrary color means, a color used at random for objects that have a common color, such as, a tree has green leaves, but we choose to make the leave purple or making the sun black, the clouds green, or the sky yellow, etc. Who was the first artist to employ the technique? I would have to say Katsushika Hokusai, Kitagawa Utamaro, and AndВЇo Hiroshige had a role in the technique. The technique was used in AndВЇo Hiroshige color woodcut print, ( Moon Pine at Ueno from One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo ), (Pg. 27), because of the color use. The colors seem to be out of place, such as, the sky s appearance being that of black, blue, and green, also the tree appears to have a redder tent than what we would normally see in nature. Hiroshige and other Japanese artists had gotten young artist thinking about color, arbitrary color, and pure color. One of the artist that took the color techniques from color woodcut prints and Japanese prints was Paul Gauguin. Gauguin was truly the first to employ arbitrary color techniques, which can be seen in his (Vision after the Sermon), (Pg. 60), with vivid red paint in the back ground, splashes of green and blue tenting on the nuns faces, these colors are not known in nature, and they are non descriptive. It just isn t natural to see these colors placed this way. Thus, Gauguin s paintings influenced younger artist and affected their ideas in the Nabis and Fauve periods. Later movements adopted this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Diels-Alder Reaction Lab Report This week in lab a Diels Alder reaction produced 4 cyclohexene 1, 2 dicarboxylic anhydride by combining 1,3 butadiene and maleic anhydride. They reaction basically combined 4 pi electrons from a diene and 2 pi elections from a double bond to produce an alkene ring. The diene must be in s cis conformation for the reaction to even happen. All of the p orbitals, both from the diene and the double bond must line up so it can attack from top or bottom, which creates a chair structure. Because of this, the trans conformation is favored due to the lesser steric interactions. As for the 2,3 difluorobutadiene and 1,3 butadiene, the rate of the reaction would be slower. The 1,3 butadiene is unstable, which makes it extremely reactive. The use of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The hormonal fluctuations of adolescent stress coupled with their gonadal hormone ups and downs, impact their learning capabilities and memory retrieval. Males with the predominance of testosteronelearn in a unique way and exhibit certain advantages like spatial learning over females. These differences between males and females have the potential of greatly impacting curriculum and teaching. Gonadal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a lot of evidence of sex differences in learning and memory, particularly in spatial tasks, although there are species differences. Estrogens appear to enhance spatial learning and memory. As previous mentioned, there are sex differences in hippocampus dependent cognition tasks, implying that there are sex hormones involved. There is sufficient evidence demonstrating that estrogen interacts with the reproductive cycle and in turn modulates hippocampal learning, memory and neurogenesis. However, the way in which estrogen effects learning and memory, from adolescence to adulthood, is dependent upon the type of estrogen, the duration, timing and dose of treatment, and the influence the effects of estrogen had on cognition and neurogenesis. There seems to be a correlation between spatial learning, estrogen and ones life cycle (age). Typically spatial learning is favorable in males, however, in terms of females spatial learning differs based on ones estrous cycle. The reason for this is because as both estradiol and progesterone fluctuate during ones estrous and menstrual cycle, each hormone contributes differently to learning and memory. In recent studies examining the relationship between estradiol and learning and memory, it was found that motherhood enhanced spatial learning and memory. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
