Screen Women Essay
Romantic comedy is undeserving of its reputation for being un feminist , since it holds a critical light
up to romantic bargaining, the sexual economy and shifting cultural standards . Discuss this statement
in relation to two post 1990 Hollywood romantic comedies.
The aim of this essay is to discuss why romantic comedy is undeserving of its reputation for being un
feminist . This statement will be discussed by close analysis of two post 1990 Hollywood romantic
comedies such as Something s Gotta Give (Nancy Meyers, 2003, USA) and Bridget Jones s Diary
(Sharon Maguire, 2001, UK).
Romantic comedy films which are also known as romcoms , are a sub genre of comedy films and
romantic films which can be traced back from the screwball ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hilary Radner has noted Nancy Meyers as being neo feminist because of her view of heterosexual
men whom she often portrays as being highly disadvantaged up to the point of suffering a disability
and her obvious interest in older women who are portrayed as very successful career women (2011).
Her films which are targeting the female audience, as Radner observes, are combining two major
disabilities as impediments to love: masculinity and advancing age. Meyer based her film Something s
Gotta Give on her own experience as a singleton in her fifties, making Diane Keaton an even bigger
star persona who won a Golden Globe, an NBR Award and also a Golden Satellite Award for her role
in the film, as Erica. Keaton s character Erica Barry is thin and fit with a natural look and mid length
hair. When she appears in her date dress which is a classic little black dress (LBD was highly
popularized by Chanel) she catches the eye of both Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) and Julian Mercer
(Keanu Reeves). Radner claims that Erica functions as an alter ego of director Nancy Meyers whose
stylistic choices somehow displace Keaton s established persona, as Keaton herself stated Clearly,
Erica is more Nancy than me (Hilary Radner, 2011: 175). The film tells the story of Erica, a divorced
playwright in her fifties who falls in love with her daughter s much older boyfriend, Harry Sanborn
who is a playboy known for dating only young women. Doctor Julian

How The Other Half Lives
Well done, Jacob Riis, well done. In the book How the Other Half Lives, published in 1890, harsh
criticisms and observations, along with photojournalism, of the appalling conditions of New York City
tenements and their neighborhoods are examined through the eyes of Jacob Riis. As a reporter at the
time for The New York Tribune, his writing and photography sparked reform and forced many people,
even the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, to focus their attention on the horrendous conditions in which
the immigrants of tenement neighborhoods lived in. Many immigrants have Jacob Riis to thank for in
part, for he helped shine a bright light on them at a time when many others kept them in the darkness.
Just as the Bible s opening chapter is named Genesis, Riis s aptly named opening chapter, Genesis of
the Tenement, gives a brief history on how the tenements came to be in the city and sets the scene for
one of the most notorious slums in New York City, Five Points. Throughout the first several chapters,
Riis talks in general of the dire situation of the people living in the tenements and the tenements
themselves. He then goes on to discuss the Italians, Irish, Chinese, Jews, Arabs, blacks, women, and
children within these tenements separately chapter by chapter. One may notice the copious amounts of
stereotypes, prejudice in some sense, he uses when writing about the Italians, Irish, Chinese, and Jews.
However, one has to remember the fundamental reason of his writing when reading

Analysis Of The Movie The Asian Film And The...
Brian Hu, the Asian Film the Supernatural.
Fuck this shit. See you next year Cannes. Out . Is a bold twitter quote from the very famous Brian Hu
which gave a lecture at CSU San Marcos film class October 20th 2015. He is the artistic director of
Pacific Arts Movement and of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation who received his PhD in Cinema
and Media Studies at UCLA. His lecture presented grave insight into National cultural specifics but
emphasized mostly on China and Hong Kong. He also broke down genres as they play a role in the
film industry. Martial arts as a genre are very specific to Chinese cinema and Japan has samurai films
of loyalty and justice. As a genre, martial arts take place at a temples or a forest and is very culturally
specific. Other genres like body genres are specific to a body reacting to a film and no mater were you
are in the world you have a body. In Latin America they have mellow dramas called telenovelas that
people want to cry to and in Korea they have their own form of drama shows that they cry to as well.
Horror films often have us react with our bodies, for example: if you see something gross you feel it in
your body, and at the same time your body is reacting to the way the characters are. Other body genres
like comedy can have a reactional impact on your body as well. For example: if you see something
funny and you laugh, that is a body reaction.
Brian Hu emphasized that classic Hong Kong action films come from the massive influx

Using Literary Devices In The Sixth Sense
After recently watching The Sixth Sense I realized that there is a great use of devices in the film. The
Sixth Sense is about a child psychologist Dr. Malcolm, who tries to help a child defeat his dark secret.
I think this movie is a prime example of using literary devices such as, foreshadowing and symbolism
within the script. I really enjoyed this film for these reasons and would recommend it everyone. There
are many instances in which these devices are used in the film, some are much more noticeable than
the others. This movie has a really high replay value because, you always notice something new in
regards to symbolism. Also the other view points that you can see the story after knowing what
happens in the dramatic ending. The many uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The biggest aspect of foreshadowing used in this movie is the fact that Malcolm only interacts with
Cole during the entire movie after his death. This is something that is hard to notice on the first time
you watch this film. This aspect gives the film high replay value. When Malcolm is sitting in the
living room with Cole s mother the viewer assumes that they are both talking when Cole arrives home
from school, when in reality she doesn t even notice Malcolm. When Malcolm attends Cole s plays at
his school no one asks him why he s there or anything at all. My favorite example of this is, there are
other parents recording the play and are sitting directly behind Malcolm. If they were able to see him,
Malcolm would be in the way of the shot. The other parents see right through him because he is dead,
I think that this is brilliant foreshadowing for the twist at the end of the film. The temperature change
is one of the more obvious uses of foreshadowing in the movie. The temperature dropped in the film
when a ghost was upset. A the start of one of the scenes, there is a close up on the thermostat changing
to cold by itself. This is foreshadowing on the upset ghosts that are about to visit

Disadvantages Of Co-Branding
Many companies in today s world of globalisation and with increasing pressure to become cost
effective and efficient, are looking for different ways to increase brand equity, brand affinity and in
general to expand their brand awareness (Stutz Schaffner, 2011). One consideration for companies in
answer to this is co branding strategies. As well as reinforcing brand image and, co branding has also
become an increasingly strategic tool to capture higher market share and increase profits and is seen to
have the advantage of gaining access to new markets (Swaminathan, 2006). Advances in technology
have made co branding possibilities more accessible to many companies (Rid Pfoertsch, 2013). Co
branding can be described as the combining of two or more brands into a joint product or when they
are marketed together in some way (Kotler Armstrong, 2012) or with two or more brand names being
are presented to the customer jointly (Rao, Qu, Ruekert, 1999).
The advantages to companies of embarking on any co branding undertaking are well described
(Grebosz Otto, 2013; Stutz, 2011; Swaminathan, 2006) and almost considered even as a win win for
many organisation (Washburn, Till, Priluck, 2004). However, there ... Show more content on

Brand extension can be either when a brand is extended into the same product category or into a new
product category. Aaker and Keller (1990) describe this co branding strategy as when a new product or
service uses an existing brand name that had been associated with it before the extension. The strategy
is that the brand equity and brand image of the brands used to create what is called the extension,
transfers to the extension (Hadjicharailambous, 2013). This brand image quality of the existing or
parent brands, and the perceived brand fit that are the main factors that influence the success of the
extension (Meyvis, Goldsmith, Dhar,

Humanity s False Exploration Of Mars
Humanity shouldn t pursue exploration of Mars because we have more pressing issues like conflicts
over the world (WW3). Money can be spent on other programs and or research that can be useful
today instead of exploring Mars. Also, if they did explore Mars the exploration could bring back a
deadly disease that no one can cure. Mars exploration could be disastrous, one scenario that can occur
is if the exploration brings back a deadly disease or diseases that no one can cure and can kill all of
mankind. Natives died from diseases that were brought from the Europeans and many Europeans died
from diseases from the Natives. Disease that we give to the life on Mars that kills all life on Mars or a
disease from Mars bought to Earth that kills all

The Effects Of Sexual Content On Children s Programming
Sexual Content in Children s Programming Children s programming is beginning to raise a concern
among many parents due to sexual content being included along with other inappropriate scenes like
violence, offensive language or verbal abuse. In a news article by Cheryl Wetzstein, she reports that
one in ten parents agreed that there were a lot of good programs on for kids because all the programs
are portraying sexual content or violence instead of being educational to children (pg. 40). Due to the
recent technological advancements, children s media exposure has increased, causing more children to
be bombarded with shows featuring sexual innuendos, sexual activity or adult subtext. Not only is the
sexual content being included frequently in programming, children are facing the content in
advertisements as well. An example of this is the advertisement poster for The Lion King. The film
poster features the face of Simba in which many analyzers and parents are pointing out that between
the eyes and above the nose features an image that looks like the butt of a naked woman creating a
sexualized image some children could pick up on (Fyfe, 2006, pg. 8). Sexual content throughout
children s programming can have both positive and negative effects on the children watching. Many
children will become able to understand what is going on in the show or film causing questioning and
new thoughts or ideas about sexual activity While parents have a concern about sexual content being

Strategies And Strategies For Emotional Development At A...
What am I doing? For my proposal I have chosen my focus to be based around mindfulness strategies
and how they can assist in emotional development at a primary school age. In society we are seeing
more and more children suffering from mental illness such as anxiety and depression. I believe that by
introducing and practicing mindfulness strategies in the classroom environment, students will be able
to stabilise and control their emotions which will in turn lead to a sense of ownership for their actions
of their body, speech and mind. This will allow students to have a more positive outlook over their
education because they will be more focused and settled in the classroom. Why have I chosen this? I
decided to cover this topic because it is a personal topic that I am very interested in. Over the last few
years I have personally taken up mindfulness strategies such as meditation, to help alleviate stress and
have more stability and control over my emotions. Through gaining awareness of these strategies I
have also been able to learn about myself on a deeper level. I have built my own identity and gained
confidence in aspects of my life where it was otherwise lacking previously. I am now passionate about
promoting individuality and diversity because this builds the people we become. Children are only
beginning their own journey in this world and believe that happiness can only come from within so I
believe it is important to connect with ourselves on an emotional level and

Examining the shape of children s development allows us to understand it better. Every childhood is
distinct, and is the first chapter in a new biography. This chapter is about children s physical and
cognitive development. These are some of the questions we will explore:
Do children develop in distinct stages, or is their development smoother and more continuous?
How do children develop physically, and how does this affect their behaviour and learning?
What is the best way to characterize students cognitive development? How might knowledge of
students cognitive development influence the way you teach?

Greek Philosopher, 4th Century B.C.
EXPLORING HOW CHILDREN DEVELOP
Twentieth century philosopher George Santayana once reflected, Children are on a different plane.
They belong to a generation and way of feeling properly their own. Let s explore what that plane is
like.
Why Studying Children s Development Is Important
Why study children s development? As a teacher, you will be responsible for a new wave of children
each year in your classroom. The more you learn about children s development, the more you can
understand at what level it is appropriate to teach them.
Childhood has become such a distinct phase of the human life span that it is hard to imagine that it
was not always thought of in that way. However, in medieval times, laws generally did not distinguish
between child and adult offences and children were often treated like miniature adults.
Today we view children quite differently than was the case in medieval times. We conceive of
childhood as a highly eventful and unique time of life that lays an important foundation for the adult
years and is highly differentiated from them. We identify distinct periods within childhood in which
children master special skills and confront new life tasks. We value childhood as a special time of
growth and change, and we invest great resources in caring for and educating our children. We protect
them from the excesses of adult work through

Literature of Psychology in Dracula by Bram Stoker
In the story Dracula , composed by Bram Stoker, the literature of psychology is well presented.
Dracula was composed in 1897, the time in which psychology was first being introduced. The novel
Dracula was written into an epistolary formation known as a series of letters, newspaper clippings, and
diary entries. Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer, travels to Transylvania to presume a real estate
transaction with the Count Dracula. Amongst his arrival he suspects peculiar activities occurring.
Bram Stoker s Dracula symbolizes the functions of the human mind and how paranoia affects
characters, which marks the beginning of the psychological era.

Harker tends to become preoccupied with the fact that something strange is going on, as his
personality remains the same, the thoughts he is deliberating will soon impact him. As the nervous
state of psychology is repressed, Harker soon feels entrapment as he states, The Castle is a veritable
prison, and I am a prisoner (Stoker 172).
When Harker announces his future demise, the affects of his actions are soon displayed throughout the
story. Upon figuring out that he is now a prisoner at the Counts mansion, his behaviors have been
affected dramatically, I rushed up and down the stairs, trying every door and peering out every
window I could find; but after a little the conviction of my helplessness overpowered all other feelings
(Stoker 172 173). The act of determinism is when ones behavior is caused by physical events going on
around them. Harker s behaviors are merely influenced by all the feverish events occurring before
him. Since paranoia is a thought process influenced heavily on anxiety or fear of an idea, it is
demonstrated when his paranoid thinking process has also caused a conspiracy in his behaviors as he
feels like an entrapped prisoner.
The idea of suicide is shown throughout the end of chapter IV, as Harker try s to escape reality by
jumping out the window. Harker s conscious mind can no longer deal with all the mayhem going on
around him as he states, At least God s mercy is better than that of

Summary Of Titus Livius The History Of Rome
In Titus Livius The History of Rome, Book 1, he tells the story of the rape of the Sabine women.
Though he is a historian, I do not feel that he well represents the true emotion and feeling of the
women, as is common for the time period. Throughout the telling, Livy fails to discuss the emotions
of the women and does not give an accurate representation of what happened to the captured Sabine
women once they were taken by the Roman men. His word choice is purposefully vague and
nondescript to make the tale more appealing to men of the time. In chapter nine of The History of
Rome, Book 1, Livy writes the beginning of the tale: how Romulus needed women to keep his new
city alive and was rejected by all of the families he approached. This leads Romulus ... Show more

In the first chapter he writes his own version of the tale, showing the true emotions of the captured
women:
As doves flee the eagle in a frightened crowd, as the new born lamb runs from the hostile wolf: so
they fled in panic from the lawless men, and not one showed the color she had before. (Ovid 1.117 20)
In this passage, Ovid displays the panic and fear that comes with being taken away from your family
which is missing in Livy s version of the story. Rather than using Livy s style of minimal description,
Ovid uses similes to show the emotion felt by the Sabines in their situation. From there, he continues
to show the violence that is enacted upon the Sabines with the line The captive girls were led away as
plunder for the marriage bed (Ovid 1.125). From that line, the reader instantly knows that each woman
is being raped rather than slept with, as Livy s version seems to say.
Although Rome in seventh century BC was a much different time than the present, I feel that Livy, as
a historian, should have written the tale from a more realistic and accurate perspective. Because his
telling was not detailed, the story is easy to

Analysis Of Arrival
Many science fiction movies often have a common theme either the aliens or turn into a generic
overwhelming threat and humanity has to band together to fight against them, like in the films such as
Independence Day and Battle: Los Angeles, or the aliens are use as a more colorful backdrop to make
the universe seem more diverse, such as in the films Star Trek and Star Wars, or they are left entirely
out and focus on humanity s endeavors into space and their failings. Arrival, however, is a science
fiction film that uses the premise of an alien invasion to disguise an even deeper meaning. Arrival uses
this premise to tackle the issue of xenophobia. Xenophobia is an intense or irrational fear or dislike of
people from a foreign country or culture. The film, Arrival, is a testament against xenophobia and
shows that if humanity were to overcome their fear of the unknown and work together, they may
achieve a great number of things. In Denis Villeneuve s science fiction film Arrival, the director
explores a very different view of reality, akin the guise of an alien invasion. Arrival is based on the
1998 novella Story of Your Life, by Ted Chiang, the story contemplates the difficult task and the
consequences of communicating with an alien species during first contact. The film opens up when
twelve extraterrestrial spaceships appear at twelve different places around the globe. Colonel Weber, a
U.S. Army officer, recruits Louise Banks, a linguist, and Ian Donnelly, a physicist,

The Myth Of The Ant Queen
While technology is commonly thought of as inventions and gadgets, anything that humans have
developed for specific purposes or to accomplish certain goals, such as methods or models, must also
be correctly categorized as such. In Cathy Davidson s essay Project Classroom Makeover, she
discusses a few unconventional forms of technology such as the educational classroom paradigm and
standardization. Similarly, in Steve Johnson s essay The Myth of the Ant Queen, he presents
procedural technology, such as self organizing systems, and conceptual technology, collaborative
intelligence. He then utilizes another conceptual form of technology, the complexity theory, to
interpret these systems seemingly uncoordinated patterns. Sherry Turkle branches off of Davidson and
Johnson s ideas by discussing the consequences of questioning what makes a robot alive in her essay
Alone Together. This narrative highlights the technology s effect on humans and the reality of robots
either improving or diminishing an individual s quality of life. Besides the slight apprehension of its
future usage, humans are mesmerized by the promising potential technology presents. Additionally,
structural or paradigmatic technology is deeply intertwined and inherent within society s functioning,
making it impossible to separate technology from human existence. Models and frameworks for
systems, also known as paradigms, are innate in all organizations and push the limits of human
creativity, knowledge, and

How Do Ocean Currents Affect The Climate System
The Way of the Ocean
Ry Cox
11/17/15
Ocean currents are a very big part of the world s oceans. Ocean currents move water, circulating
around the globe pushing warm and cold water all around. These ocean currents are driven by the rise
and fall of tides, wind, the sun, energy, surface currents, and subsurface currents. But how does the
temperature of the ocean currents affect the ocean? All of these make up ocean currents and help it
affect the climate system. Ocean currents also affect the climate system by circulating around the
world and using what it is driven by. Without ocean currents there would not be enough moisture or
energy in the world.
Two of the many big parts in ocean currents are surface currents and subsurface currents. ... Show

(Ocean Currents) Right now oceans are being affected by global warming, and not in a good way.
Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth s atmosphere generally
attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons,
and other pollutants. (Google Dictionary) Some of the many things are being affected in the ocean.
Like the sea levels, coastlines, ocean acidification, sea water, sea temperatures, tides, the sea floor, the
weather, and ocean currents. (Wikipedia) Over the past century it has been seen that sea levels have
risen by a lot because of global warming and that has contributed to the temperature increases of the
ocean. The ocean has started to get warmer and warmer. Studies have shown that global warming
might be changing the direction of the Atlantic Ocean currents and that can disturb sea life and land.
As warmer water is coming onto cold water places in the ocean, the warm water is pushing the cold
water way. Tides and waves are made by surface currents and subsurface currents and help the ocean
currents move. (Currents) The temperature of the ocean currents is a big part because it helps make the
circulation pattern as the currents move around. (Pidwirny) What makes the ocean currents spin in a
circular formation and move to different parts of the ocean is called a gyre. Gyres are what

Elizabeth Bennet Pride And Prejudice Essay
Elizabeth Bennet stands for the prejudice in the title and Mr. Darcy stands for the pride. This seems to
be correct; Elizabeth is quick to make judgments and is very stubborn as she judges Mr. Darcy too
quickly and with too little information by accepting Wickham s words without judgment and therefore
believes nothing Darcy says is positive about his feelings towards her. Mr. Darcy acts as if he were
superior to the people in Hertfordshire. Mr. Darcy was overly proud, underrating the ladies at the
Meriton ball. Mr. Bingley asks Mr. Darcy to dance, but he answers: At such an assembly as this it
would be insupportable. Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another woman in the room whom it

Beowulf Compared To Modern Day Hero
In this epic poem, Beowulf is portrayed as an ancient hero but he also has traits of a modern day hero.
Throughout the book, Beowulfs character is developed deeper so the reader can see his characteristics.
These characteristics can be compared to both an ancient and modern day hero. Beowulf is very
similar to other ancient heroes, like Achilles, who were present in other epic poems around the same
time period. For example, Beowulf is strong, bold, courageous, and skilled like other ancient heroes
are. Beowulf ultimately faces danger head on with extreme confidence and courage just as any ancient
hero does. However, Beowulf is also similar to modern day heroes in many ways as well. For
instance, most modern heroes are treated with respect,

The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant
Many authors utilize literary elements to allow readers to predict the plot using details and visualize
scenes using imagery. Two examples of these short stories are The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant
and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber. The Necklace was about a materialistic woman
who faced consequences because of her envious personality and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was
about a man who experienced daydreams randomly throughout the day. Although both short stories
used literary elements, Guy de Maupassant utilized them for readers to understand and enjoy the story
more than James Thurber.
The Necklace was a short story of a middle class woman, Mathilde, who borrowed a necklace from a

But mine was only paste. Why, at most it was worth only five hundred francs! (Maupassant 204). At
that moment, Madame Loisel, as well as the readers, learned all the debt Mathilde and her husband
went through was for nothing. If she had not worried the consequences from the truth, the hard labor
could have been avoided. This was ironic because throughout the whole story the necklace represented
something expensive and high class when in reality it was a fake. The Necklace can be described as a
story with many detailed and vivid sentences, making each scene come to life in the reader s mind.
Even though there are many of these occurrences, the most animated example was right after Mathilde
and her husband paid for the replacement necklace. When describing Madame Loisel s hard labor, it
was said She washed dishes, wearing down her shell pink nails scouring the grease from pots and
pans; she scrubbed dirty linen, shirts, and cleaning rags which she hung on a line to dry (Maupassant
203). This created a visualization and feeling of hard work and exhaustion, which was exactly what
Madame Loisel was going through. The details about her nails, for example, form an image of
physical wear down. This was significant because in the beginning of The Necklace it was explained
that Mathilde cared deeply about her outward appearance. Because of the expensive necklace they
replaced, her

Religious Discrimination In The Workplace
Religious Discrimination at the Workplace
Intro There are thousands of religions in the world, so it is necessary that an employer be very careful
to not discriminate against a person for their faith. One can define discrimination as unequal treatment
of employees or job applicants based on color, race, gender, religion, age, or nationality. The Civil
Rights Act of 1964 made it illegal for and employer who has fifteen or more employees to
discriminate against an employee under any circumstance. Many employees can and are still being
wrongly discriminated against by there employers or fellow employees over their religions.
Religious Discrimination Cases The case EEOC vs. Red Robin Gourmet Burgers was brought before a
district court , in August 2005, because one of employees at the restaurant, Edward Rangel, had small
religious tattoos around his wrists, which he refused to cover. Red Robin was sued because Mr. Rangel
s tattoos were part of his religious practice of the ancient Egyptian religion of Kemetic Orthodoxy.
The employee had worked at the business for six months without being approached about his tattoos;

Essay about Legitimacy of the Canadian Intervention in Libya
The Libyan Revolution of 2011 initiated with nonviolent political protests modeled after the events in
Tunisia and Egypt, and quickly escalated to a full fledge civil war. Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar
Gaddafi obtained the role of the official ruler of Libya in 1969 by a bloodless coup d etat against King
Idris. Gaddafi remained the official ruler of Libya from 1969 until 1977. (Calvocoressi, 2001)
Subsequent to 1977, he referred to himself as a symbolic figurehead until the revolt in 2011, which

Analysis Of Chasing Heroine
Should this disease have gotten this far in society? The more you engage in any type of emotion or
behavior, the greater your desire for it will become. Chris Prentiss. In the documentary Chasing
Heroine that was filmed on PBS Frontline, was extremely shocking to watch. This film was filmed in
2016. It followed current and former addicts, their love ones, and advocates. This documentary
actually told the truth of certain things in regard to heroine. The light was shed on how the heroine
was brought into history, social problems, and shame, and the system. In the documentary, heroine is
nothing new, but a disease that has been brewing for a little over 30 years. Before heroine became
known for a high, it was a drug called OxyContin, that was given to everyone to take away their
problems. These pain problems consist of cancer patients and severe chronic pain. However, Purdue
Pharma seen an opportunity to provide a new prescription called Oxy to an old drug name, but gave it
an extra release long acting of pain relief. Then started advertising it on commercials for the public to
view every day. Less than 1% of patient become addicted. In 2001, Pharma sold over 1 billion dollars
with OxyContin over a year. Heroine started to go epic after OxyContin was tapered back from the
pharmacy. Heroine was also majority of the middle class to the wealthy white men and woman
population that lived in the suburban area. The pharmacy knew what they were doing, and had to pay
about 600 million in fines for their neglect to the people. This epidemic was taken to the White House,
but President Obama did not take it serious. Obama could care less about this epidemic, that he waited
1 year later to act. However, at this time the healthcare professionals could provide a bottle to every
adult in the nation. Heroine was just not hitting the adult population, but young adults tried it too. One
particular participant in the film was named Christina. She started heroine at a young age, and now
been using for years. She was high while filming the documentary. There was a phrase that stuck out
to me that she correlates with, this drug, it has a brain, and it shares mine. I can understand that this is

Lesson Plan For A Small Group Of Three First Grade,...
LESSON PLAN
CONTEXT
This lesson is designed for a small group of three first grade, classified English language learning
(ELL) students. The students are ages six through eight years old and are in a first grade classroom.
They spend 90% of their time in the regular classroom, and the other 10% outside of the classroom
receiving instruction from the ESOL teacher. All three of these students are female, two of which are
Latino and the other of Arabic descent. Only one of the Latino girls was born outside of the United
States, and the other two students were U.S. born. They attend Andrew Jackson Elementary School in
South Philadelphia. The two Latino students have gone to Jackson from the time they were in
Kindergarten, while the Arabic student entered Jackson this year after the school year had already
begun. All three of these children are below grade level in all content areas, especially literacy. In
terms of this lesson, math is the content area being addressed. The concepts of less than, greater than,
and equal to will be taught. Prior to this lesson, the students have learned how to count and label their
numbers 0 through 100. They have worked briefly with $#$#1$#$# lines and understand the
cardinality of numbers.
DESIRED RESULTS

Enron Was A Publicly Traded Energy Company
Enron was a publicly traded energy company formed in 1985 by Kenneth Lay when Internorth
acquired Houston Natural Gas; the company, based in Houston Texas, Enron (originally entitled
EnterOn , but was later subjected to abbreviation), worked specifically in power, natural gas, and
paper and even ventured into various non energy based fields as they expanded, including: Internet
bandwidth, risk management, and weather derivatives. Several years after the founding of the
company, Enron hired a man by the name of Jeffrey Skilling, a former chemical and energy
consultant, who, upon promotion, created a team of high level administrative employees who, by
using special purpose entities, lackluster reporting of finances, and unethical accounting practices, hid
billions of dollars of debt from unsuccessful arrangements and ventures from stock holders and the
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Enron executives achieved this scheme by using a
controversial accounting method entitled mark to market accounting, which in essence, assigns value
to financial commodities based on their projected market values; mark to market accounting is the
opposite of cost based accounting which records the price of a commodity at the purchase price. As a
result of this new method, Enron s worth skyrocketed to over $70 billion at one time, only to collapse
miserably several years later ultimately costing thousands upon thousands of people their jobs,
pensions, and retirements. Enron s employees

The Cold War was predominately between two major powers in the world. These two super powers

Cold War happened relatively soon after the Second World War. Why did the Cold War begin? In
1947, the Cold War began and it was due to various reasons. Some historians believed that the
bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused the Cold War. In addition, the
United States president during 1945 (Harry S. Truman) had a strong dislike for communism and the

Not only did Truman s dislike for Stalin cause the Cold War but also Soviet Union expansion was a
leading cause of the start of the Cold War. In the Second World War, Germans invaded the Soviets.
During the Second World War, approximately 25.3 million people living in the USSR died from the
German army. 3 All of these deaths, during the Second World War, concerned the USSR. The USSR
wanted to expand westward because they wanted to create a buffer zone between Soviet Union as a
way to protect themselves from future invasions. When the Second World War ended, the USSR still
had troops in Eastern Europe this allowed the USSR to help the communist parties rise to power thus
assimilating them into the Soviet Union Army.4 This buffer zone was later be known as the Iron
Curtain (Soviet Army). Due to the Russians imperializing more countries and turning them into
communist countries, it caused hostility and concern among the Western European powers. However,
countries in Western Europe did not take any action to stop the Soviets because they were afraid of
war until the US intervened in 1946.4 Roosevelt told his advisors, The Russians only understand one
language how many armies have you got? I m tired of babying the Soviets . 9 He wanted to halt
communism from growing by stopping Soviets from taking over more countries. A major country,
Truman was worried about the Soviet Union taking over was Iran. During the Second World War, the

Political Philosophy Of Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli, a banished political theorist once said, The first method for estimating the
intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him. Compared to the men around him,
Machiavelli has the most compelling political philosophy. Machiavelli certainly is a leading political
theorist who uses history and straight forwardness to prove his point. The Prince is filled with great
knowledge that has the ability to inspire the reader. Niccolo Machiavelli use of historical analysis,
realist attitude and brazen syntax are the driving forces that make his political philosophy so
compelling.
Machiavelli found it really important to study those that came before him. Machiavelli states, I have
been unable to find among my possessions anything which I hold so dear or esteem so highly as that
knowledge It is this knowledge and carefully analysis of history that makes his argument truly
compelling. Theorists before him like aristotle used observation and imagination in order to develop
their political theory s. But observation does not determine political success it is the careful analysis
and emulation of great leaders . Machiavelli proves this when he says , But as to exercise for the mind,
the prince ought to read history and study the actions of eminent men,...and above all, do as some
eminent men have done in the past,..so that when fortune changes she may find him prepared to resist

The Effect Of Ph Levels On Daphnia
This experiment is being performed to show the effect of pH levels on daphnia by changing pH levels
and measuring the heart rate.
Introduction
Daphnia are used to test water toxicity, they are a vital part of fresh water ecosystems. They are a food
source for smaller fish and invertebrates and considered to be a consumer of algae and bacteria
(Elbert, 2005). These small crustaceans range in size from 2 5mm long and are commonly referred to
as water fleas. Daphnia belong to the group called Daphniidae, which is a relative of freshwater
shrimp. It is easy to see the internal organs of daphnia because of a transparent taco shell like
carapace. A carapace is the hard outer part of a shell or covering. A daphnia s life span can range
between 1 56 days. (Elenbaas, 2013; Clare 2002). The comfortable pH level for daphnia is between
7.2 and 8.5 (Clare, 2002).
In this experiment different pH levels ranging from 3 to 11 were used to test the effects on daphnia
heart rate. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH ranging from 0 to 6 is acidic, a pH of 7 is neutral,
and a pH higher than 7 ranging from 8 to 14 is basic. PH revolves around hydrogen ions (H+). The
reason pH levels can be acidic, basic, or neutral is because acids give hydrogen ions away while bases
accept hydrogen ions. (Decelles, 2002).
The intention of the experiment was to measure how different pH levels affect the heart rate of
daphnia. The objective of this experiment was to measure the heart rate of

Paraguayans do not have many historical happy times in their past. Their history leading up to
Operation Condor involves three men that led the country to a government based on military

Pricing And Distribution Strategy Memorandum
Pricing and Distribution Strategy Memorandum With any pricing strategy, the price must match the
branding of the product. For example, for a luxury item branded product, the price needs to be higher
to coincide with the branding perception. A few pricing strategies to focus on include product cost
based strategy, customer focused strategy, and product life cycle strategy. The distribution strategy
also plays a crucial role in the successful implementation of a new product. Furthermore, MM Inc.
needs to determine what distribution channels will have the greatest influential means to market and

Pricing
Before Mobile Marketing determines which pricing strategy to choose, the organization should
consider the overall objectives. Which pricing strategy will fit best with the objectives of the new
product development? Is the purpose to make the most amount of profit the fastest way possible, or to
develop a long lasting relationship with the target market to establish long term profitability and
growth? Determining the key objective will help to discover which pricing strategy works best,
however, the company has to make a profit to continue business. According to M.U.S.E. (2013),

three factors need to be addressed during the discussions of the following pricing strategies. The first

of the degree of consensus on any suspicious claims. The degree of consensus measures how many
people who are knowledgeable on the subject agree on something.
Fact Check Tool Is An Important Step
Of course, some fake news readers will likely continue to reject the truth in favor of a fake news
article. They will believe claims that seem to support prejudices they already have. Fact Check won t
eliminate the problem of fake news completely. But Forte thinks that Google s new tool is an
important step in fighting the growth of misinformation on the web.
Asking companies like Google and Facebook to think about these problems and do what they can to
address them is a start, says Forte. But it doesn t go far enough. We need both technological and social
solutions. Both good design and

The Physical Appearance of Class Differences and Wealth
Do you consider yourself a part of the upper class? In the society in which we live in today, it is
widely known that people at higher social classes obtain finer access to premier education. On account
of the statement previously mentioned, prestigious institutions steer the way to more business
relationships and eventually, a greater chance of obtaining a higher income due to increased job
opportunities presented through connections and networking. This concept is known as elitism and is
fairly popular belief amongst the competitive population. Elitism is the belief that certain persons or
members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived
superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources1 . But I would like to question the basic
premise of this argument since there is something more than just wealth which determines one s social
class. The argument I make throughout my paper focuses on the aspect of why attractive people are,
on average, wealthier and have higher paying jobs than less attractive people. This statement is a
theory I do not stand by alone. In order to persuade and convince to my readers that attractive people
are more successful, I will be citing documentation of well known facts reported by leading
psychologists, economists, and their research studies. A book that I occasionally will be referencing to
is Beauty Pays: Why Attractive People Are More Successful and is written by Daniel Hamermesh,

American Red Cross Humanitarian Group Essay
There are many humanitarian groups out there, but what exactly is a humanitarian group? Well it is a
group of people that have an urge to help the community and the people in it. They do all sorts of
things like help the poor and the less fortunate. They also run different programs like if you need
counseling or help getting back on your feet after an addiction or disaster. But is that really all there is
to a humanitarian group?
One of the thousands of humanitarian groups and probably the most well known is the American Red
Cross. The American Red Cross does many things for our community and nation. One of the things
they do is prepare. This is when they might go to homes or go to different buildings to install fire
alarms. Or if there is going to be a flood they might go and help people sandbag their house. Not only
do they prepare but they also respond. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Library is a way children across the community, whether rich or poor, can always have a book to read.
Currently United Way has mailed over 260,00 books to roughly 8,300 kids in the Bismarck Mandan
area. It may sound kind of sad, but some kids do not have enough food at home on the weekends so
they will go to school on Monday and find themselves tired, dizzy and distracted. But the United Way
has targeted that problem by creating the Backpack program. The Backpack Program is where
children in the Bismarck Mandan area take home a bag of food every weekend, so they won t go
hungry. The United Way does not only help the poor and needy, it also helps the elderly that do not
want to live in a nursing home but cannot live by themselves. The best part is there are over 769 home
services that help them with this. The United Way continues to help our community and the people
that live here by giving them a better tomorrow and

Mr. M. H. S Glucose Level
It was 2 a.m. when Mr. H, a 52 year old man, arrived to the Emergency Department accompanied by
his brother complaining of dizziness and hyperglycemia. Upon arrival Mr. H s glucose level was 500
mg/dl. It was not the first time for Mr. H to visit the Emergency Department complaining of glucose
intolerance; he is a regular visitor. In addition to diabetes, Mr. H has a history of hypertension,
dyslipidemia, vision and respiratory problems. He was treated with insulin and put under supervision
for 24 hours. Once his glucose reached normal level, he was given brief instructions and discharged.
Mr. H. works as an industrial engineer away from his family and he is busy most of the time. Due to
his work, he spends most of the time in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nurse started to ask Mr. H. some questions about his disease and she discovered that he did not
have the minimum knowledge about diabetes or how to control it; he did not even know how to use
the glucometer to check his blood glucose level. Mr. H s nurse was trying hard to convince him to
attend diabetic lectures and read to gain the knowledge needed to prevent the consequences of
diabetes, but again he used the time to make excuses.
In 2003, Mr. H was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease. Therefore, he had to go to the dialysis
unit three times a week. Due to this problem, he decided to retire so he would be able to go to the
dialysis sessions. Mr. H was committed in going to his dialysis session, but still according to him, he
could not change his lifestyle and eating habits. Three years later, his physician decided to do
peritoneal dialysis for him. Mr. H s daughter was taught how to perform it for him at home. Mr. H s
conditions started to deteriorate and he went into depression since he became dependent on others to
an extent that he did not want to take a bath.
Mr. H refused to take his insulin dose and his daughter was worried. In fact, Mr. H was much more
worried because he knew that two of his daughters were diagnosed with diabetes and he did not want
them to suffer. Mr. H continued to resist taking his insulin dose and other medications. In August 13,
2005, Mr. H presented to the Emergency Department complaining of

Pride In Shakespeare s Othello
As Toba Beta once said, Pride is the mother of arrogance . Pride can cause anyone to overvalue
themselves and lose sight of the truth. In Othello s case, his pride puts himself on a pedestal. When
Iago challenges this by suggesting that Desdemona cheats on him, he slowly loses his confidence and
becomes weak and insecure. Iago vaguely warns him to not become jealous of Cassio, and Othello s
fragile ego once again causes him to let his mind get the best of him. In Shakespeare s Othello,
Othello s pride leads to his downfall in order to show that too much confidence eventually leads to
emotional self destruction. In the beginning acts, Othello is depicted as a very strong and confident
man. When Iago reveals to Othello that Brabantio is angry about his relationship with Desdemona,
Othello continues to be confident and believe that he belongs with Desdemona. Othello shows his
confidence by saying that his [...] parts, my title, and my perfect soul / Shall manifest me rightly
(I.ii.36 37). This shows that Othello has the strength to continue fighting for Desdemona, although her
father does not support the relationship. Othello s pride causes him to believe that because of his legal
status and positive personality, Brabantio will accept him as Desdemona s partner. Although he is
incorrect, his theory proves that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Othello is strong and confident, yet allows Iago s lies to destroy him. Throughout the play, Othello s
pride and self esteem slowly diminishes because he let Iago get the best of him. Telling Othello that
Desdemona is cheating on him causes him to become insecure because he does not want to lose his
dignity. Othello s self destruction was caused by his loss of pride as the acts go on. Pride causes
people to believe they are superior, so and when something negative happens it sets them off track. It
is important to not let pride get in the way of everyday situations as it did for

Analysis Of James Joyce s Dubliners Dubliners
Bria LeeAnn Coleman
ENG 299
Dr. Mark Facknitz
October 12, 2015
Epiphanies in James Joyce s Dubliners Characters in Dubliners experience revelations in their every
day lives which James Joyce called epiphanies. Merriam Webster defines an epiphany as an
illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. While word epiphany has a religious connotation,
these epiphanies characters in Dubliners experience do not bring new experiences and possibility of
reform that epiphanies usually have. Joyce s epiphanies allow characters to better understand their
circumstances, generally full of sadness and grief. After these revelations, characters go back to their
lives with acceptance but frustration. Dubliners fail to see their situation fully, which is the reason they
lacked reaching their full potential. Dubliners is full of characters in lethargic positions that Joyce saw
as the fate of all Dubliners. In each story, he gave each individual the possibility of an epiphany, but
often the characters failed to break through and see their ability to change their situations, because of
this, some of these epiphanies occur only on the narrative level, showing the reader that the story s
character missed their epiphany. In fact, in The Dead , the scene is set on/around January 6th, which is
the Feast of the Epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ s divinity
to the Magi. The Dead is also Joyce s last chance to make clarity of an epiphany. Will this

Cinder Compare And Contrast Essay
Although Cinderella and Cinder have many similarities and differences like having Cinder in both of
their names or wearing a dress, they both have similar stories about themselves as well. Cinderella for
example does not live in a futuristic time setting unlike Cinder who does. Cinder also has differences
to Cinderella as well, for example, she is a cyborg and is not entirely human. To continue on, they
have similarities as well, such as having a stepmother. Finally, I will be trying to show the majority of
differences and similarities that come across both Cinderella and Cinder respectively in the best way
that i can possible. First, I will start with the differences that Cinderella has to Cinder. For one,
Cinderella had met the Prince in her story whilst in a forested area, while Cinder met Prince Kai at her
place of work. Another difference she has to Cinder is the fact that she doesn t have an android
companion. One more difference that Cinderella has to Cinder is that she has a Fairy Godmother,
Cinder only has a stepmother. Lastly, these were some differences that Cinderella has to Cinder in her
own/respective story. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To start Cinder had worn one of her stepsister s dress, Peony s, when Cinderella had worn her dress
due to a little help in getting it. The next difference that i have for Cinder compared to Cinderella is
that she did not get to marry Prince Kai while Cinderella got to marry the Prince in her story. And one
more difference that Cinder has compared to Cinderella is that she is a Lunar, a person from the
Moon, Cinderella is not this as she is a normal person in the basis of her world/real world, meaning
she was born on Earth and not anywhere else unlike Cinder who was born on the Moon. Finally these
were some differences that Cinder has when compared to

Cultural Issues Of Assisted Living
To begin, there are two main issues that make it difficult for American Muslims to accept assisted
living facilities for their elderly parents or support the development of assisted living and nursing care
facilities. The first issue has to do with their culture and how unique it is. The Muslim culture has
specific guidelines on how they are supposed to live according to the Quran. One cultural issue is that
Muslims are taught to respect their elders, but it was never explained in the Quran how to do that
exactly. Many Muslims are torn between putting their parents in a nursing home because they can t
give them the right care, or they succumb to peer pressure and do what other Muslims are doing
keeping their parents at home with them, which

  • 2. Screen Women Essay Romantic comedy is undeserving of its reputation for being un feminist , since it holds a critical light up to romantic bargaining, the sexual economy and shifting cultural standards . Discuss this statement in relation to two post 1990 Hollywood romantic comedies. The aim of this essay is to discuss why romantic comedy is undeserving of its reputation for being un feminist . This statement will be discussed by close analysis of two post 1990 Hollywood romantic comedies such as Something s Gotta Give (Nancy Meyers, 2003, USA) and Bridget Jones s Diary (Sharon Maguire, 2001, UK). Romantic comedy films which are also known as romcoms , are a sub genre of comedy films and romantic films which can be traced back from the screwball ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hilary Radner has noted Nancy Meyers as being neo feminist because of her view of heterosexual men whom she often portrays as being highly disadvantaged up to the point of suffering a disability and her obvious interest in older women who are portrayed as very successful career women (2011). Her films which are targeting the female audience, as Radner observes, are combining two major disabilities as impediments to love: masculinity and advancing age. Meyer based her film Something s Gotta Give on her own experience as a singleton in her fifties, making Diane Keaton an even bigger star persona who won a Golden Globe, an NBR Award and also a Golden Satellite Award for her role in the film, as Erica. Keaton s character Erica Barry is thin and fit with a natural look and mid length hair. When she appears in her date dress which is a classic little black dress (LBD was highly popularized by Chanel) she catches the eye of both Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) and Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves). Radner claims that Erica functions as an alter ego of director Nancy Meyers whose stylistic choices somehow displace Keaton s established persona, as Keaton herself stated Clearly, Erica is more Nancy than me (Hilary Radner, 2011: 175). • 4. How The Other Half Lives Well done, Jacob Riis, well done. In the book How the Other Half Lives, published in 1890, harsh criticisms and observations, along with photojournalism, of the appalling conditions of New York City tenements and their neighborhoods are examined through the eyes of Jacob Riis. As a reporter at the time for The New York Tribune, his writing and photography sparked reform and forced many people, even the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, to focus their attention on the horrendous conditions in which the immigrants of tenement neighborhoods lived in. Many immigrants have Jacob Riis to thank for in part, for he helped shine a bright light on them at a time when many others kept them in the darkness. Just as the Bible s opening chapter is named Genesis, Riis s aptly named opening chapter, Genesis of the Tenement, gives a brief history on how the tenements came to be in the city and sets the scene for one of the most notorious slums in New York City, Five Points. Throughout the first several chapters, Riis talks in general of the dire situation of the people living in the tenements and the tenements themselves. He then goes on to discuss the Italians, Irish, Chinese, Jews, Arabs, blacks, women, and children within these tenements separately chapter by chapter. One may notice the copious amounts of stereotypes, prejudice in some sense, he uses when writing about the Italians, Irish, Chinese, and Jews. Is a bold twitter quote from the very famous Brian Hu which gave a lecture at CSU San Marcos film class October 20th 2015. He is the artistic director of Pacific Arts Movement and of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation who received his PhD in Cinema and Media Studies at UCLA. His lecture presented grave insight into National cultural specifics but emphasized mostly on China and Hong Kong. He also broke down genres as they play a role in the film industry. Martial arts as a genre are very specific to Chinese cinema and Japan has samurai films of loyalty and justice. As a genre, martial arts take place at a temples or a forest and is very culturally specific. Other genres like body genres are specific to a body reacting to a film and no mater were you are in the world you have a body. In Latin America they have mellow dramas called telenovelas that people want to cry to and in Korea they have their own form of drama shows that they cry to as well. Horror films often have us react with our bodies, for example: if you see something gross you feel it in your body, and at the same time your body is reacting to the way the characters are. Other body genres like comedy can have a reactional impact on your body as well. For example: if you see something funny and you laugh, that is a body reaction. The Sixth Sense is about a child psychologist Dr. Malcolm, who tries to help a child defeat his dark secret. I think this movie is a prime example of using literary devices such as, foreshadowing and symbolism within the script. I really enjoyed this film for these reasons and would recommend it everyone. There are many instances in which these devices are used in the film, some are much more noticeable than the others. The biggest aspect of foreshadowing used in this movie is the fact that Malcolm only interacts with Cole during the entire movie after his death. This is something that is hard to notice on the first time you watch this film. This aspect gives the film high replay value. When Malcolm is sitting in the living room with Cole s mother the viewer assumes that they are both talking when Cole arrives home from school, when in reality she doesn t even notice Malcolm. When Malcolm attends Cole s plays at his school no one asks him why he s there or anything at all. My favorite example of this is, there are other parents recording the play and are sitting directly behind Malcolm. If they were able to see him, Malcolm would be in the way of the shot. The other parents see right through him because he is dead, I think that this is brilliant foreshadowing for the twist at the end of the film. The temperature change is one of the more obvious uses of foreshadowing in the movie. The temperature dropped in the film when a ghost was upset. A the start of one of the scenes, there is a close up on the thermostat changing to cold by itself. This is foreshadowing on the upset ghosts that are about to visit ... One consideration for companies in answer to this is co branding strategies. As well as reinforcing brand image and, co branding has also become an increasingly strategic tool to capture higher market share and increase profits and is seen to have the advantage of gaining access to new markets (Swaminathan, 2006). Advances in technology have made co branding possibilities more accessible to many companies (Rid Pfoertsch, 2013). The Effects Of Sexual Content On Children s Programming Sexual Content in Children s Programming Children s programming is beginning to raise a concern among many parents due to sexual content being included along with other inappropriate scenes like violence, offensive language or verbal abuse. In a news article by Cheryl Wetzstein, she reports that one in ten parents agreed that there were a lot of good programs on for kids because all the programs are portraying sexual content or violence instead of being educational to children (pg. 40). Due to the recent technological advancements, children s media exposure has increased, causing more children to be bombarded with shows featuring sexual innuendos, sexual activity or adult subtext. Not only is the sexual content being included frequently in programming, children are facing the content in advertisements as well. An example of this is the advertisement poster for The Lion King. The film poster features the face of Simba in which many analyzers and parents are pointing out that between the eyes and above the nose features an image that looks like the butt of a naked woman creating a sexualized image some children could pick up on (Fyfe, 2006, pg. 8). For my proposal I have chosen my focus to be based around mindfulness strategies and how they can assist in emotional development at a primary school age. In society we are seeing more and more children suffering from mental illness such as anxiety and depression. I believe that by introducing and practicing mindfulness strategies in the classroom environment, students will be able to stabilise and control their emotions which will in turn lead to a sense of ownership for their actions of their body, speech and mind. This will allow students to have a more positive outlook over their education because they will be more focused and settled in the classroom. Why have I chosen this? I decided to cover this topic because it is a personal topic that I am very interested in. Over the last few years I have personally taken up mindfulness strategies such as meditation, to help alleviate stress and have more stability and control over my emotions. Through gaining awareness of these strategies I have also been able to learn about myself on a deeper level. I have built my own identity and gained confidence in aspects of my life where it was otherwise lacking previously. As a teacher, you will be responsible for a new wave of children each year in your classroom. Childhood has become such a distinct phase of the human life span that it is hard to imagine that it was not always thought of in that way. However, in medieval times, laws generally did not distinguish between child and adult offences and children were often treated like miniature adults. Today we view children quite differently than was the case in medieval times. We conceive of childhood as a highly eventful and unique time of life that lays an important foundation for the adult years and is highly differentiated from them. When Harker announces his future demise, the affects of his actions are soon displayed throughout the story. The act of determinism is when ones behavior is caused by physical events going on around them. Harker s behaviors are merely influenced by all the feverish events occurring before him. Since paranoia is a thought process influenced heavily on anxiety or fear of an idea, it is demonstrated when his paranoid thinking process has also caused a conspiracy in his behaviors as he feels like an entrapped prisoner. Though he is a historian, I do not feel that he well represents the true emotion and feeling of the women, as is common for the time period. Throughout the telling, Livy fails to discuss the emotions of the women and does not give an accurate representation of what happened to the captured Sabine women once they were taken by the Roman men. His word choice is purposefully vague and nondescript to make the tale more appealing to men of the time. (Ovid 1.117 20) In this passage, Ovid displays the panic and fear that comes with being taken away from your family which is missing in Livy s version of the story. Rather than using Livy s style of minimal description, Ovid uses similes to show the emotion felt by the Sabines in their situation. From there, he continues to show the violence that is enacted upon the Sabines with the line The captive girls were led away as plunder for the marriage bed (Ovid 1.125). From that line, the reader instantly knows that each woman is being raped rather than slept with, as Livy s version seems to say. Arrival, however, is a science fiction film that uses the premise of an alien invasion to disguise an even deeper meaning. Arrival uses this premise to tackle the issue of xenophobia. Xenophobia is an intense or irrational fear or dislike of people from a foreign country or culture. The film, Arrival, is a testament against xenophobia and shows that if humanity were to overcome their fear of the unknown and work together, they may achieve a great number of things. This was ironic because throughout the whole story the necklace represented something expensive and high class when in reality it was a fake. Gaddafi had previously been linked to supporting many terrorist attacks, such as, the Lockerbie bombing and the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing. • 39. The Effect Of Ph Levels On Daphnia This experiment is being performed to show the effect of pH levels on daphnia by changing pH levels and measuring the heart rate. Introduction Daphnia are used to test water toxicity, they are a vital part of fresh water ecosystems. They are a food source for smaller fish and invertebrates and considered to be a consumer of algae and bacteria (Elbert, 2005). These small crustaceans range in size from 2 5mm long and are commonly referred to as water fleas. Daphnia belong to the group called Daphniidae, which is a relative of freshwater shrimp. It is easy to see the internal organs of daphnia because of a transparent taco shell like carapace. A carapace is the hard outer part of a shell or covering. A daphnia s life span can range between 1 56 days. (Elenbaas, 2013; Clare 2002). The comfortable pH level for daphnia is between 7.2 and 8.5 (Clare, 2002). In this experiment different pH levels ranging from 3 to 11 were used to test the effects on daphnia heart rate. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH ranging from 0 to 6 is acidic, a pH of 7 is neutral, and a pH higher than 7 ranging from 8 to 14 is basic. PH revolves around hydrogen ions (H+). The reason pH levels can be acidic, basic, or neutral is because acids give hydrogen ions away while bases accept hydrogen ions. (Decelles, 2002). The intention of the experiment was to measure how different pH levels affect the heart rate of daphnia. The objective of this experiment was to measure the heart rate of ... Analysis Of James Joyce s Dubliners Dubliners Bria LeeAnn Coleman ENG 299 Dr. Mark Facknitz October 12, 2015 Epiphanies in James Joyce s Dubliners Characters in Dubliners experience revelations in their every day lives which James Joyce called epiphanies. Merriam Webster defines an epiphany as an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. While word epiphany has a religious connotation, these epiphanies characters in Dubliners experience do not bring new experiences and possibility of reform that epiphanies usually have. Joyce s epiphanies allow characters to better understand their circumstances, generally full of sadness and grief. After these revelations, characters go back to their lives with acceptance but frustration. Dubliners fail to see their situation fully, which is the reason they lacked reaching their full potential. Dubliners is full of characters in lethargic positions that Joyce saw as the fate of all Dubliners. In each story, he gave each individual the possibility of an epiphany, but often the characters failed to break through and see their ability to change their situations, because of this, some of these epiphanies occur only on the narrative level, showing the reader that the story s character missed their epiphany. In fact, in The Dead , the scene is set on/around January 6th, which is the Feast of the Epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ s divinity to the Magi. The Dead is also Joyce s last chance to make clarity of an epiphany. Will this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cultural Issues Of Assisted Living To begin, there are two main issues that make it difficult for American Muslims to accept assisted living facilities for their elderly parents or support the development of assisted living and nursing care facilities. One cultural issue is that Muslims are taught to respect their elders, but it was never explained in the Quran how to do that exactly.
