Subjectivity In Doctor Moreau s The Island Of Doctor Moreau
In The Island of Doctor Moreau, one of the important characters is Moreau, a vivisectionist who has
fled the exposure of his experiments to a remote island with the aim of pursuing his focus on research
in the effort to perfect the Beast Folk . Moreau s claim is that the aim of his experiments and
interactions with the beasts is to raise them into human creatures, buthis true purpose is to preserve the
low status and nature of the beasts by denying any human attributes that are inherent in the animals.
Moreau s focus is on prohibiting the non human animals from having and demonstrating emotions and
attributes that are traditionally anthropocentric (human). Moreau does not allow the non human
animals to feel and demonstrate human emotions and symbolic attributes, including the desire for self
defense, autonomy, and feelings of shame (Wells 95 97). The objective of Moreau seems to be to
create and preserve a gap between the human beings and animal creatures. Nevertheless, in his efforts,
Moreau inadvertently reveals the significance of the nature and status of human beings.
In his efforts to vivisect non human animals and make them rational creatures , Moreau does not
differentiate between animal and rational characteristics. The effect of Moreau s actions and outlook in
the novel is to influence the audience s recognition of subjectivity as an important factor in
differentiating between human beings and animals. In the novel, Wells promotes the notion that while
human beings are animals, human animality represents a threat to progress. Moreau believes that
human perfection is a possibility, aiming to accelerate the process of evolution artificially to transform
animals into human beings mentally, emotionally, and physically. While respecting the aims of
Moreau, the narrator in the novel, Prendick, feels pity for the consequential Beast People , who he
views as failed experiments (Wells 121). Moreau is unable to achieve his objectives, complaining that
the instincts, desires, and cravings that inundate the animals creep back immediately after his
experiment. When Prendick returns to England, he is constantly nervous about human beings.
The character of Edward Prendick, who is the protagonist and narrator in

History of Breakdancing Essay example
B boying is a form of hip hop dancing, which is popularly known as breaking. It consists of top or up
rock, footwork, spinning moves (power moves), and freeze. B boying came from Bronx, NY. The term
quot;B boy quot; or quot;B boying quot; was created by Kool Herc who was a DJ spinning at block
parties in Bronx back in the days. B Boys means break boys and they were called so because they
dance to the break part of music. Later, by repeating this break part done by DJ, quot;breakbeats quot;
was born.
It was late 60s, early 70s when people started a sort of b boying. Their dancing was called quot;Good
Foot quot; from James Brown s record of the same name. The Good Foot was the first freestyle dance
that incorporated moves involving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the first early break moves had been established, a definite style began to develop. The famous
first generation of b boys were quot;Nigger Twins quot;, quot;Clark Kent quot;, and quot;Zulu Kings
quot;. Around 1977 breaking was losing its popularity and it was about to die. (Continued on Page 2)
History of Breakdancing
B Boying (continued from Page 1)
However, breaking came back with a new generation of b boys. It was Puerto Rican b boys who put
new life to breaking and took it into next level. They started to put many higher levels of acrobatics
and gymnastics into breaking and invented many new moves. B boys such as Crazy Legs from Rock
Steady Crew who were influenced by Jimmy Lee and Joe Joe, members of original Rock Steady Crew
developed and invented the new moves such as backspins and windmills. Media stars like Bruce Lee
and other Kung Fu film stars and martial artists had a major influence on b boying culture. The
popularity of Kung Fu films during the mid and late 70s around the world and especially in New York
City has had a great impact on b boying style. A large number of martial arts moves were incorporated
into b boying.
B boying became even more popular in 80s. It was first introduced to out side of New York City and
the rest of world by a movie quot;Flashdance quot; in 1983. (Before the quot;Flashdance quot;, there
were already movies like quot;Wildstyle quot; and quot;Stylewars quot;). Even though it was not a b

Transportation Is The Most Popular Form Of Transportation
In all countries transportation has always been a staple I every community, city, state and country.
Without some form of transportation it would take forever for one person to point B from point A. To
solve the issue people began using animals as transportation. The horse was the most popular form of
transportation because it was very fast and multiple people could ride on a horse at a time. Then
people began being transported by horse and buggy, which eventually led to trains and cars. Today
transportation is no longer an issue, but the price for transportation is a huge issue. With gas prices
constantly rising year after year and cost of living going up, people in society are trying to live more
efficiently. To live more efficiently Taxis and metro were created but today they are no longer the most
efficient way to travel. To travel efficiently a company in the United States created something called
UBER. Uber is the next big thing when it comes to travel efficiency and it would benefit other
countries as well.
Uber stands out from the rest of the crowd with four basic utilities that add a lot of value to the
customer experience. Uber first needed to form a way for not just one person to ride but for multiple
to ride and everyone in the Uber vehicle would split the difference in the price of the Uber ride. Then
Uber had to figure out a way to get an Uber to the customers in a timely fashion. To complete that task
Uber employed 160,000 Uber drivers by the end of 2014

Wideman Vs. Limerick Essay
John Edgar Wideman s Our Time , and Patricia Nelson Limerick s Empire of Innocence , are two very
different stories about one particular theme. In these selections both authors are writing history.
Wideman is writing the history of his brother s life, and Limerick is writing the history of the old west.
Although the theme is the same, the two authors styles, methods, and writing concerns differ greatly.
In the following passage from Our Time , John is visiting his brother, Robby, in prison. While
listening to Robby s story, John begins to question the type of book this project will become:
The business of making a book together was new for both of us. Difficult. Awkward. Another book

If I don t speak I have no past. Except the nothing, the emptiness. My brother s memories are not
mine, so I have to break into the silence with my own version of the past. My words. My whistling in
the dark. His story freeing me, because it forces me to tell my own. (Wideman p. 739)
The variance between John and Robby s stories brings Wideman to the decision to write the selection
as both of the brothers recollections.
As Limerick tells the story of the old west, she explains, One skill essential to the writing of Western
American history is a capacity to deal with multiple points of view (Limerick p. 504). She explains
this through many stories, including the stories of Narcissa Whitman, the missionary sent to save the
Indian tribes, and Julia Bulette, a prostitute. Both were murdered. Narcissa by the Indian tribe she was
working with, and Julia by John Milleain of Virginia City. The Indians were looked upon as beasts,
and Milleain was praised by the respectable women of Virginia City. In perspective, and in Limericks
opinion, the Indians may not have been to blame, due to the fact that they were merely protecting
themselves from the diseases brought on by Narcissa that had already killed every infected tribe
member. Not to forget Julia Bulette s favored death just because her profession was not morally
accepted. These are the views referred to by Limerick that are often skipped over in stories

Galanz
This case talks about the development path of Galanz from a down product factory to the leader in
microwave ovens industry. Galanz was founded in 1978 by Liang Zhaoxian s father, headquartered in
Shunde, Guangdong province. It was originally a township enterprise employing a few workers
dealing in the trading of down feather products, but after many years development, it was switched to
the electrical appliance business with the introduction of microwave oven. Because of its right
marketing strategy, it became leader in this industry.

Question3: What is the role technology has played in the success of Galanz?
I think technology played a key factor in the success of Galanz.
At the very beginning, Galanz s most important components were all purchased from its rivals. When
Galanz became the leader in the microwave ovens market, its rivals refused to supply the most
important component magnetron to it. So it had to design its own magnetron. After its design in the
magnetron, it enhanced in R amp;D capability and production innovation. This allowed the company
ti reduce costs and provide differentiated features in its products. Meanwhile, the company started
providing more ODM service to large OEM clients as well as receiving more orders for products with
Galanz brand from small and mid size enterprises in developing countries.
Question4: What are Galanz s competitive and operations strategies, and how does its operations
strategy support its competitive strategy?
Galanz s competitive strategy was low cost, and its operation strategy was transfer of production line
through OEM agreement. First tactic used by Galanz was to escalate its production capacity through a
free production line transfer. Second tactic was to attract component suppliers setting up component
production facilities in Galanz. Then Galanz fully utilized its production facilities and labor resources
to the extreme by operating three shifts per day, seven days a week and 365 day a year. This allowed

The Assumption of the Virgin
The painting The Assumption of the Virgin has a mannerism influence. Mannerism was a XVI century
art style influenced by, and at the same time a reaction to, the harmonious ideals of the Italian High
Renaissance. Mannerism is notable for its artificial ( as opposed to naturalistic ) qualities which favor
compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier Renaissance
painting. El Greco s artistic formation in Rome and Venice, reflects the influence of roman mannerist
designs (e.g Michaelangelo s masterfully polished drawings) and that of the Venetian school of
painting with its emphasis in the richness and variety of colors, the use of pigments to achieve the
impression of depth and brightness, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sacred religious imagery was justified in the context of this invocation of the Virgin and the saints.
Veneration was not idolatrous because it was referred to the prototype represented in the image.
Among the saints, the Virgin has a primordial place because she is the Mother of God and the the
prime intercessor between Man and Christ. Since the Virgin s role had been denied by the Protestants,
the Catholic Church responded by emphasizing her special status. In the Assumption of the Virgin ,
the Virgin is assumed to ascend to Heaven with her body preserved from corruption as a reward for
her faith and good works. Another determining factor in evaluating a painting s context is patronage
and, in XVI century
Spain, this was largely either religious or monarquic. The monarquic alliance with the Catholic faith
was a salient feature of the Spanish court and, in particular, in the kingdom of Philip II.
To understand why El Greco ( which means the Greek since he came from Crete ) found his way to
Toledo, Spain in 1577, after studying painting in Venice and Rome, it is essential to realize that Spain,
at the time, offered great opportunities for artists, largely because of the patronage of king Philip II.
The King, in particular, favored painters which followed the Mannerist style. Religious commissions

Essay on The Truth of Love Revealed in Adam’s Curse
The Truth of Love Revealed in Adam s Curse
Adam s Curse is a poem by William Butler Yeats that was written at a time when his first true love,
Maud Gonne, had married Major John MacBride. This may have caused Yeats much pain and Yeats
may have felt as cursed as Adam felt when God had punished man from the Garden of Eden. This
poem, in fact, symbolizes his pain and loss of love that he once had and is a recollection of his
memories during happier times with Maud. In the beginning of the poem We sat together at one
summer s end/ That Beautiful mild woman your close friend/ And you and I, and talked of poetry ,
Yeats recalls a beautiful time with Maud. Poetry could be related to the language of love, and Yeats ...

He is definitely using a parallel to describe his poetry and his short time with Maud. He believes that
falling in love with Maud is so similar to the hard work he puts into the poems he writes. If one were
not too look into the poem they would in fact miss this entirely. Yeats then begins the next part of the
poem quite literally. He recalls a conversation he has with Kathleen, Maud s sister. She is speaking of
beautiful women, and how beauty is not achieved easily. Beauty is not as natural as many people
think.
This beauty blinds a man, just as Yeats was by Maud. Yeats thought Maud was beautiful and did not
see the flaws until now. It is sad, because Yeats now realizes, there is no fine thing , just as God has
cursed men, he has done the same to women. He is sure that there is neither a perfect romance nor a
perfect woman. He states that it must be labored as the rest of life. Yeats speaks of the traditions that
he followed to court Maud. Men have laid out the laws on how to fall in love, and he followed these
lessons. These traditions now seem frivolous to him, since he doesn t care anymore. They did not
work for him and he lost his love. He is kind of angry that he was foolish enough to believe they
would work. He realizes that love is not an organized process and it, once again, requires

Cultural Diversity In Rocky Mountains
In the northwest corner of New Mexico, in the high desert rangeland and foothills of the Rocky
Mountains is the small town I grew up in, Aztec, New Mexico. Not too much stands out in this town;
ranches and homesteads mostly failed and died in the mid 1900 s due to the rise of the oil and gas
industry that surrounds it. Today that market is very fragile today fluctuating back and forth from good
to poor staggering the employment rate as the market changes. This, I believe, lends to a terrible the
lack of cultural diversity; most of the population in that area can be divided into three groups
Caucasian, Hispanic, and Native American. My father, Caucasian, is very calm and largely open and
accepting to cultural diversity. My mother, of Spanish

Secret Intelligence Service Failure
The Secret Intelligence Service was derived by the Secret Service Bureau which was founded in 1909.
The bureau was a joint initiative by the Admiralty (authority responsible for the command of the
Royal Navy in the UK until 1964) and the War Office (department of the British Government
responsible of the Army between the 1700 s 1964). MI6 was initially founded to oversee activities
being conducted by the Imperial German Government at the time.
MI6 didn t play a very big role throughout World War 1 because it could not establish a solid network
over German soil and due to this, most of the information was being supplied by the military.
After the Great War many of the country s resources had been depleted, however MI6 created a close
relationship with the diplomatic service (a service that provided authorized personnel a diplomatic
immunity so that they were allowed safe passage to other countries). This helped with building
networks in foreign countries.
With this, the Secret Intelligence Service began focusing on Communism , in particular, Russian
Bolshevism . A plan was made to overthrow the Bolshevik Government, and everything was in check
for who would lead after that, however all of a sudden, many Russian politicians were being murdered
and MI6 took the blame, so the operation ended up as a Failure.
During the inter war period, many other institutes were created thanks to the SIS. These included,

acid fast bacilli on smear, tissue culture, skin biopsy, and in recent years, PCR which has shown to be
of importance in laboratory diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, the yield from culture
and PCR is often low and diagnoses may need to depend on clinical features, histopathological
findings, and retrospective review of response to treatment(1); the diagnosis of the child who is

My Research Methodology In Sculptures
My research methodology consists of creating a terraform like sculpture using plaster molds and a low
fired clay body. Instead of using glazes on my work I will be experimenting with plant matter for the
surface treatment. The sculpture will be hollow and will be able to hold water. I will also be
experimenting with firing the pieces just hot enough to allow for the water to leach out enough to keep
the outer surface of the sculpture moist without the entire piece becoming so over saturated that it falls
apart. I will be focused on trying to find the proper clay body for my figurative sculptures. I created
my own clay body using recycled clay and it was not porous enough and did not provide the right

The idea for the creation of my figurative forms comes from a story from the Bible. Some of the
passages I am referencing are from the book of Genesis. The book of Genesis imparts that: The time
came when the Lord God formed a man s body from the dust of the ground and breathed into it the
breath of life. And man, became a living person (Genesis 2:7). Another reference includes Genesis 2:8
from the New Testament that talks about the garden of Eden being planted and finally Genesis 4:19....
All your life you will sweat to master it, until your dying day. Then you will return to the ground from
which you came. For you were made from the ground, and to the ground you will return . These are all
a reflection Starks 3 of the creation story which is the idea of making this figurative, chia strewn
sculpture. The significance in creating these figurative forms is that I hope to relate to others through
the process of entropy and I want viewers to be able to have an open dialog about entropy. The subject
of entropy can be a metaphor for all sorts of personal narratives. Using living organisms as material
and viewing the life/death cycle as a material arranged onto a figurative form can probe at issues

Film Analysis Of Remember The Titans
Remember the Titans Close Film Analysis In the film Remember the Titans directed by Boaz Yakin,
the main characters of the Titans are introduced as a group to us in a scene shot in the gymnasium.
This scene is when the team first meets the other prospective team members and develop their
relationships with each other. Yakin uses this scene to show the tension and intimidation between the
two separate teams, especially focusing in on the two coaches (Boone and Yoast) while giving the
audience an idea of where their relationship stands. He uses four techniques to create this; blocking,
sound effects, camera angles and dialogue do this. Yakin uses a variety of minor techniques in this
excerpt to provide the viewer with a greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is important to the scene as it adds a new dimension and depth to the action being made without
the sound being present. An example in this clip is when Coach Boone walks in to acknowledge the
team, you do not hear his footsteps or the sound of his whistle around his neck hitting against the
fabric of his shirt. The director has done this to put more emphasis on his actions, not the sound his
presence is making for example, if there was an excess of sound effects for every minute sound made
would distract the audience who would not be able to focus in on his paltry movement which have
considerable meaning to the scene, an example of this would be the way Coach Boone walks up to the
team, his whistle is swinging from side to side making no sound, you can see he is in an angry state
with no sound intensifying this fact. The lack of sound effects is not used often in the whole film
itself, therefore making an effect when the technique is indeed used. Yakin used dialogue in a certain
way producing an intimidating character (Coach Boone). For example, Coach Boone says, it is a
dictatorship, and I am the law this quote from Coach Boone is important because it gives his character
authority. The fact he has a harsh vocabulary (he doesn t use or have a soft voice/language) it is telling
the audience he doesn t break easily, he is a strong headed character. Yakin made the dialogue a
greater chunk of this

Louis Pasteur And Lister
Pasteurization and Listerine came from the names of pioneers against germs, who improved the
affects of medicine. Experimenting in the late 1800s, scientists Louis Pasteur in France, then Joseph
Lister in England, made discoveries that revolutionized patient health. Their work eliminated some of
the health risks patients experienced throughout medical processes. Both Louis Pasteur and Joseph
Lister transformed treatment, to the process and eventually to the patient during the Industrial
Revolution.
Before scientific improvements introduced by Pasteur and Lister, there was a lack of cleanliness
throughout the surgical process. Medical theory misunderstood the importance of a cleanliness
protocol, these faults resulted in sepsis and outpatient deaths. Though the actual surgery would be a
success, Ward Fever would claim lives afterwards. Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister brought to light
the effects of illness and benefits of sterilization.
Louis Pasteur, a French chemist and biologist, founded the concept of temperature as a way to kill
germs. He showed that microorganisms caused liquids such as milk, wine and beer to spoil. He
invented a process in association with Claude Bernard in which liquids such as milk were heated to
kill bacteria and moulds present and then cooled to normal temperature (Louis Pasteur Famous
Inventors). Discovered in 1864, Pasteurization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Fashion In The Fashion Industry
In recent years there has been a vast increase in sports fashion in fashion industry. This is partly
because in the 21th century a majority of people choose sport to improve their quality of life,
nevertheless, people need to allocate time in their busy life to do exercise. So the choice of clothing is

Shortly, economic, political, and social cooperation between the Greeks and those around them

The Pros And Cons Of Amphibian Trade
Our planet is currently suffering its Sixth Great Extinction, a time in which a various species of
organisms are disappearing at an unprecedented rate (Collins and Crump xv). The most rapidly
disappearing groups of organisms are amphibians, and over 200 of these species have been brought to
extinction since the year of 1970 (Save the Frogs). One of the largest causes of their rapid declines is
the spread of the lethal disease chytridiomycosis, a fungal disease largely spread by humans
(Whittaker and Vredenburg). Frogs and other amphibians are dying from this chytridiomycosis
because of our selfishly taking them from the wild to an assortment of distant locations simply for the
pet trade, food trade, and dissections, which are all unnecessary to economies (Kriger and Hero 1). In

Williams Renowned English poet and novelist Sarah Williams quoted this line in her poem, The Old

continue on his journey fearlessly. The poet has used the night and stars to give out the message that
nothing in the world should be feared, and that, there is a good side to even the worst possible things.
What makes a difference is our perspective towards it. We should be courageous and try not to pay

Of course nights are when the turmoil we faced the whole day takes a toll on us and our fatigue levels
are at peak. But nights are also when we just let go and go with the flow. It is when we take our heart
in our hands and do not consider thinking about things so much. We just let go of the things we keep
hiding from the world the whole day, and let it all out. Very often, late night hours are considered as
hours when the most honest confessions are made. So, some truths can only be revealed when it is
dark, rather than in the bright daylight. 4. I like the night. Without the night, we would never see the

enough to get rid of all the melancholy and commotion of the day. Metaphorically too, one who has
witnessed the darkness and silence of the night beneath the moon and the stars and never paid
attention to how beautiful it is, he or she would be missing out on one of the most marvelous creations
of God. 5. Night is the other half of life, and the better half ~Johann Wolfgang von

Pillsbury Crescent Commercial Analysis
The Pillsbury crescent commercial gets to me every time. I honestly could be in the middle of cooking
breakfast. Usually my breakfast contains a boiled egg and some steamed kale. I would be in the
process of preparing when I happen to turn the television on and miraculously a commercial that
advertises about a crescent and how delicious it is. I begin to sit down and for some reason I am
watching the commercial as if it is some kind of educational purpose. The Pillsbury dough boy stands
by the crescent and I watch the butter slide down the bread in complete slow motion. After that I am
hooked, I have forgotten about the kale that was steaming and the boiled egg which is now about to
burn my apartment down due to the lack of water it no longer

Battle Of Khe Sanh Essay
The Battle of Khe Sanh
Caution: Being a Marine in Khe Sanh may be hazardous to your health. Newsweek. The Battle of Khe
Sanh was a battle between Americans and the North Vietnamese Army that tested every aspect of our
military. Both parties have claimed this battle as a win. There is one certainty of this battle; without
field artillery the Marines would have not survived.
The battle of Khe Sanh was fought between January 21st and July 9th, 1968 in the Khe Sanh area of
the northwestern Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. The Battle lasted 77 days, and saw some of the
fiercest fighting of the Vietnam War. Khe Sanh combat base (KSCB) was placed in a strategic location
along the Rao Quan River and Route 9. This route leads right into the cities of Dong Ha and Quang
Tri City to the east. Three battalions of the 26th Marines were defending KSCB. ... Show more content

Army has continued its trend of learning from previous battles, both their own and those involving
other countries militaries. The Battle of Khe Sanh was no exception; General Westmoreland met with
former French Officers to discuss the similar events that took place at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 to
ensure that U.S. Marines did not end up in a comparable situation. Media coverage and a lack of clear
communication at the time certainly contributed to the nation s negative view of the battle. Hence, the
consensus of the media was that the entire situation was another disaster in the making. However, U.S.
Forces were much more prepared to defend their position than had been the French.
While U.S. Forces were victorious in the Battle of Khe Sanh, the perception of victory did not last. In
July of 1968 General Creighton Abrams closed the air base immediately after taking command of
MACV. Situations such as this have certainly fueled the United States Military s public affairs
strategies. We have become more dedicated to painting a more accurate picture and communicating

Analysis Of The Midnight Velada
Throughout the entirety of recorded history, the power of words (whether they be spoken aloud or
simply read to oneself) has continuously made an enormous impact within all cultures around the
world. With outlets like poems, songs, stories, and even symbolic writing, civilizations have been able
to develop multiple beliefs and practices through the use of words. A piece of poetry or rather, a chant
that has become extremely significant in the cultural world of the Mazatec people comes from a piece
of work called The Midnight Velada that is traditionally known to be performed by one of the most
famous shamans alive, MarĂa Sabina. What is so exceptionally meaningful about this particular poem

Sabina is most commonly recognized as a healer and spiritual leader among the Mazatec people that
became extremely prominent in their community from the mid 1950s, till her death in 1985. What
made her so well known by the people of the Sierra Mazateca, as well as the western world, was her
unique approach to the midnight vigil, or the velada, as it is most commonly known by the Mazatecs.
Álvaro Estrada recalls experiencing one of Sabina s memorable veladas with his photographer in his
biographical novel MarĂa Sabina: Her Life and Chants in the following entrance:
The simple hospitality of our hosts and their children and relatives...the chanting of MarĂa Sabina...
[her] percussive artistry and her solo dancing in the pitch darkness combined with the distant worlds I
was viewing with a clarity of vision never approached by eyesight in daylight...all these
effects...shook us both to the core of our beings (13).

The effect of this particular poem did not only become an integral part of the Mazatec s culture, but it
also began to directly influence the people of the western world, as well. Beginning in the mid 1950s,
following the rise of Sabina s vigils, westerners came from all around to experience the world of
hallucinogens that the Mazatec people offered during their veladas. Famous musicians from the likes

Uwm Application Research Paper
I decided to apply to the University of Wisconsin Madison for many reasons. One reason I applied to
UWM was to get closer to nature. In Tustin, California it is extremely difficult to get some real nature
, as the closest thing we have to forest are the palm trees that cover the Orange County skyline. The
closest source of nature here is the beach, and while it is beautiful, it s just not the same as having
deciduous trees changing colors as the seasons change. University of Wisconsin Madison is also on an
isthmus, which is a piece of geography I ve never seen before. The idea of being surrounded by nature
excites me very much and it would be different if I was able to experience all four seasons and not just
summer all the time. If I were to attend UWM I would take advantage of all the nature on and around
the campus because it would be something that I could not experience in my hometown. I also want to

America. Madison is also known for their deep pride in their multiple D1 sports such as football,

city of Madison is host to a lot of music and food festivals which would give me an opportunity to
enjoy life off of campus during the weekends. Additionally, Madison is an extremely green city, which
is something every nature lover enjoys hearing. In the end University of Wisconsin Madison seems
like the right college for me for many reasons. The location seems perfect and the academics feel like

found that diabetic children who played the Packy and Marlon game were four times less likely (77%

here suggest that well designed video games can be highly appealing and motivating learning
environments for players. In these virtual worlds, players have access to unlimited opportunities to
rehearse skills, experience social support (between peers who also played the game as well as the
game characters themselves), actively obtain and use information, and receive immediate feedback on

Lieberman (2001) found that children who played Bronkie experienced a gain in asthma related self

efficacy because it allows for self reflection, rehearsal, and with success it

Rhetorical Analysis Of President Obama s Farewell Address
In President Obama s Farewell Address, Obama actively tries to persuade his audience to step up and
make a change; He wants more people to step out of their comfort zone and make something happen.
He persuades his audience by using interesting word choice, connecting with them, and talking about
the future of American democracy. In the beginning of his address, he says, you can tell I m a lame
duck ... By beginning with a lighthearted joke, he puts himself in an amiable light and makes the
audience more comfortable with him and more inclined to listen to what he has to say. He then
connects with the audience by saying, Whether we ve seen eye to eye or rarely agreed at all, my
conversations with you, the American people in living rooms and schools; at farms and in factory
floors... Obama says this to show that he took his time to go to those places to talk to people, which
lets the audience knows that he cares and is willing to go out of his way to sit on factory floors to
listen to what people have to say. By starting off his address this way, he lets the audience know how
much he cares, which, in turn, makes the audience care about what he is about to tell them. Obama
soon introduces his claim by saying, This is where I learned that change only happens when ordinary
people get involved, get engaged, and come together to demand it. Here, he is claiming that it is
ordinary people people like the audience who are the ones who are to bring about change. To get the
audience more involved, he chooses to use words such as: we, our, and you. He uses these words to
addresses each and every person in the audience personally and by doing this, he makes them agree
with him because they feel that they are being spoken to directly. In one paragraph of his speech, he
says, But that s what we did. That s what you did. You were the change. You answered people s hopes,
and because of you, by almost every measure, America is a better, stronger place than it was when we
started. Here, he repeats the word you to emphasize the fact that he is addressing each person directly
and that they are the ones who make changes, that they are the ones who make America a better place.

Huckleberry Finn Philosophy
The goal of philosophy is to help humans seek the ultimate truth to questions that orbit the thought of
knowledge. One questions that many philosophers are immersing themselves to answer is whether or
not there is a universal good and bad that is true for all people, cultures, and time periods. Mark
Twain, the author of the novel Huckleberry Finn, provides what could be an ultimate truth to this
question through the actions of his character. During the novel, as Twain s character, Huck, helps an
escaped slave reach his freedom, Twain displays there is a universal good and bad that is true for all.

avails the whole body, especially the heart. Smoking cigarettes causes about 1 in every 5 deaths in the

organs in the body. It also damages the blood vessels, which increases the risk of atherosclerosis

cigarette binds to the hemoglobin, a substance that is found in red blood cells, preventing the blood
from carrying a full load of oxygen that is needed to sustain the body. Making it harder to breath and

Argumentative Essay On US Draft
U.S. Draft Essay
The United States of America has always been a country based on the protection of its citizens
freedom. Due to this long held principle, which comprises the country s core values, the concept of
universal national service (more commonly known as the draft) is quite controversial. Advocates for
the draft argue that the drafting of eligible Americans is necessary to preserve a strong military that is
capable of protecting the U.S. from possible attacks, as well as instilling a sense of national pride in its
youth. While the draft could potentially strengthen the military in theory, the draft could also be quite
counterintuitive in reality. Furthermore, the U.S. Draft, in some ways, could be infringing on citizens
human rights ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned above, military officials see the draft as unnecessary. In addition to these officials,
public opposition to the draft is growing. According to a survey, 80 percent of Americans opposed the
draft in 2007 (Text 5, graphic). If the majority of the country opposes something that would directly
affect its youth, then that something should not be reinstituted. Public opinion on the reinstitution of
the draft reflects the opposition that would be present if it were reinstituted. Draft eligible Americans
would most certainly try to find a way out of military service, as draftees have done in the past. But
because the public opinion on the draft has shifted dramatically since 1980, where 59 percent of
Americans were in favor of the draft, the resentment associated with serving would most likely be
higher (Text 5, graphic). This resentment is almost inevitable, especially with pro draft arguments
claiming the need to serve in the military in exchange for citizenship rights (Text 1, line 61). Rights
granted by citizenship should not have requirements in order to make use of them; that is why one is
granted these rights with U.S. citizenship and not after serving in the military. Not only are citizens
rights at stake, but also the right to education. Bill Maxwell argues that serving in the military should
be a requirement in order to attend college (Text 3, line 45). Military service as a requirement for
college would definitely

The Disease Of Red Measles Or Measles
Rubeola
Rubeola, also called red measles or measles, is an acute viral disease that causes a red rash over the
body. Measles is one of the most common and most deadly communicable childhood diseases. It is
spread from one child to another through direct contact with droplets from the nose and throat.
Sometimes, it is spread through air borne droplets from an infected child. This is a very contagious
disease that usually consists of a rash, fever, and cough. The rubeola virus can live on surfaces for
hours.
The virus was first isolated in 1954 by Nobel Laureate John F. Enders and Thomas Peebles, who were
careful to point out that the isolations were made from patients who had Koplik s spots, white spots
under the tongue. The rubeola virus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Symptoms of measles begin to appear about seven to fourteen days after a person is infected, but can
be as long as twenty days. Most cases start with a mild to moderate fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes,
and sore throat. About three to five days later, a red rash appears. The rash begins at the hairline, then
spreads down to the rest of the body. When the rash appears, the fever may be as high as 103°F
to105°F. Symptoms may last for one to two weeks. Many cases are complicated by secondary
infections caused by bacterial pathogens, mainly Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae,
Streptococcus pyogenes, and Haemophilus influenzae. These pathogens readily invade the body
because measles damages the normal body defenses. Secondary infections most commonly cause
earaches and pneumonia.
Measles can be prevented by injecting an attenuated rubeola virus vaccine. At the time of the
introduction of the vaccine in the early 1960s, there were about 400,000 cases of the disease were
being reported each year in the United States, probably representing one tenth of the actual number of
victims. The number of cases in the United States have declined to maybe just a few each year. In
1980 the worldwide incidence of rubeola was estimated to be 100 million with 5.8 million deaths.
Globally, vaccination programs have lowered the number of cases dramatically since then, however,
the decline in incidence has not been uniform among the different regions of

Leif Enger Symbolism
Birds represent God s presence unless they are interfered with people. Leif Enger strategically created
hidden places for the references of birds into his story that become a scavenger hunt for the reader.
The Lands encounter a lot of positive and negative occasions with birds. Though God guides them
along this journey to find Jeremiah s son, Davy, God finds ways to show his presence through others.
In this book, God appears through many symbols of birds. His presence appears through people or in
new places. But, when birds are interfered with people, their positive presence of God has a negative
turn. It determines how the next portion of the Land s journey will go and their luck to come. Towards
the middle of the story, Leif Enger introduces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This seemed as though it were a sign from God. So far, Leif Enger has used Birds in his story as
representations of God s presence. This part in the novel, however, is somewhat opposite. After the
Lands had stopped by August and Birdie s place, they stared to drive across the boarder into North
Dakota. As they were driving on an open road with no other approaching cars, Swede noticed
something black, flapping in the middle of the road up ahead. They later realize it is a dead crow. This
however was not common what so ever to see a crow in North Dakota. They thought nothing of it and
proceeded on their journey. As they kept driving, there was yet another crow found dead in the middle
of the road. Jeremiah later goes on to say, I was just thinking, all the years I spent in North Dakota,
that s the first crow I ever saw hit on the road. (page 134) Enger purposefully made Jeremiah s line
prominent to tell the reader that this was very suspicious and out of the ordinary to see not one, but
two dead crows on their way. God still seemed to appear at this moment but in a different perception.
God seemed to be warning them that something bad was yet to come. Perhaps if the crows weren t
found dead, they could have meaning that the Land s were headed in the right direction. Although
because the crows were dead, the Land s were followed with bad news the next day. This shows that
God s presence has been represented through birds. Although, when birds are interfered with people,
such as possibly crows being hit by a vehicle, they lose the presence of God and bad news is yet to

There are different laboratory tests that can be ran by doctors that helps in diagnosing osteoporosis.
These tests are run with samples of blood and urine from the patient. Some of the tests are blood
calcium levels, 24 hour urine calcium measurement, thyroid function tests, parathyroid hormone
levels, testosterone levels in men, 25 hydroxyvitamin D test to determine whether the body had
enough vitamin D, and biochemical marker tests, such as NTX and CTX (NOF, 2010). Osteoporosis is
a treatable disease, but not a curable one. There are different types of treatment for osteoporosis. Some
of the medications that can be taken for treatment of osteoporosis are estrogen, bisphosphonates,

2010). Some of the more common names for bisphosphonates are Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva, and

addition to the medications, there is also the treatment of exercise and diet. With a diet high in

likelihood of bone fractures in people with osteoporosis (The New York Times, 2010). In Ms.

  • 2. Subjectivity In Doctor Moreau s The Island Of Doctor Moreau In The Island of Doctor Moreau, one of the important characters is Moreau, a vivisectionist who has fled the exposure of his experiments to a remote island with the aim of pursuing his focus on research in the effort to perfect the Beast Folk . Moreau s claim is that the aim of his experiments and interactions with the beasts is to raise them into human creatures, buthis true purpose is to preserve the low status and nature of the beasts by denying any human attributes that are inherent in the animals. Moreau s focus is on prohibiting the non human animals from having and demonstrating emotions and attributes that are traditionally anthropocentric (human). Moreau does not allow the non human animals to feel and demonstrate human emotions and symbolic attributes, including the desire for self defense, autonomy, and feelings of shame (Wells 95 97). The objective of Moreau seems to be to create and preserve a gap between the human beings and animal creatures. Nevertheless, in his efforts, Moreau inadvertently reveals the significance of the nature and status of human beings. In his efforts to vivisect non human animals and make them rational creatures , Moreau does not differentiate between animal and rational characteristics. The effect of Moreau s actions and outlook in the novel is to influence the audience s recognition of subjectivity as an important factor in differentiating between human beings and animals. In the novel, Wells promotes the notion that while human beings are animals, human animality represents a threat to progress. Moreau believes that human perfection is a possibility, aiming to accelerate the process of evolution artificially to transform animals into human beings mentally, emotionally, and physically. While respecting the aims of Moreau, the narrator in the novel, Prendick, feels pity for the consequential Beast People , who he views as failed experiments (Wells 121). Moreau is unable to achieve his objectives, complaining that the instincts, desires, and cravings that inundate the animals creep back immediately after his experiment. When Prendick returns to England, he is constantly nervous about human beings. The character of Edward Prendick, who is the protagonist and narrator in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. History of Breakdancing Essay example B boying is a form of hip hop dancing, which is popularly known as breaking. It consists of top or up rock, footwork, spinning moves (power moves), and freeze. B boying came from Bronx, NY. The term quot;B boy quot; or quot;B boying quot; was created by Kool Herc who was a DJ spinning at block parties in Bronx back in the days. B Boys means break boys and they were called so because they dance to the break part of music. Later, by repeating this break part done by DJ, quot;breakbeats quot; was born. It was late 60s, early 70s when people started a sort of b boying. Their dancing was called quot;Good Foot quot; from James Brown s record of the same name. The Good Foot was the first freestyle dance that incorporated moves involving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the first early break moves had been established, a definite style began to develop. The famous first generation of b boys were quot;Nigger Twins quot;, quot;Clark Kent quot;, and quot;Zulu Kings quot;. Around 1977 breaking was losing its popularity and it was about to die. (Continued on Page 2) History of Breakdancing B Boying (continued from Page 1) However, breaking came back with a new generation of b boys. It was Puerto Rican b boys who put new life to breaking and took it into next level. They started to put many higher levels of acrobatics and gymnastics into breaking and invented many new moves. B boys such as Crazy Legs from Rock Steady Crew who were influenced by Jimmy Lee and Joe Joe, members of original Rock Steady Crew developed and invented the new moves such as backspins and windmills. Media stars like Bruce Lee and other Kung Fu film stars and martial artists had a major influence on b boying culture. The popularity of Kung Fu films during the mid and late 70s around the world and especially in New York City has had a great impact on b boying style. A large number of martial arts moves were incorporated into b boying. B boying became even more popular in 80s. It was first introduced to out side of New York City and the rest of world by a movie quot;Flashdance quot; in 1983. (Before the quot;Flashdance quot;, there were already movies like quot;Wildstyle quot; and quot;Stylewars quot;). Even though it was not a b boying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Transportation Is The Most Popular Form Of Transportation In all countries transportation has always been a staple I every community, city, state and country. Without some form of transportation it would take forever for one person to point B from point A. To solve the issue people began using animals as transportation. The horse was the most popular form of transportation because it was very fast and multiple people could ride on a horse at a time. Then people began being transported by horse and buggy, which eventually led to trains and cars. Today transportation is no longer an issue, but the price for transportation is a huge issue. With gas prices constantly rising year after year and cost of living going up, people in society are trying to live more efficiently. To live more efficiently Taxis and metro were created but today they are no longer the most efficient way to travel. To travel efficiently a company in the United States created something called UBER. Uber is the next big thing when it comes to travel efficiency and it would benefit other countries as well. Uber stands out from the rest of the crowd with four basic utilities that add a lot of value to the customer experience. Uber first needed to form a way for not just one person to ride but for multiple to ride and everyone in the Uber vehicle would split the difference in the price of the Uber ride. Then Uber had to figure out a way to get an Uber to the customers in a timely fashion. To complete that task Uber employed 160,000 Uber drivers by the end of 2014 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Wideman Vs. Limerick Essay John Edgar Wideman s Our Time , and Patricia Nelson Limerick s Empire of Innocence , are two very different stories about one particular theme. While listening to Robby s story, John begins to question the type of book this project will become: The business of making a book together was new for both of us. Difficult. Awkward. Another book could be constructed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I don t speak I have no past. Except the nothing, the emptiness. My brother s memories are not mine, so I have to break into the silence with my own version of the past. My words. My whistling in the dark. His story freeing me, because it forces me to tell my own. (Wideman p. 739) The variance between John and Robby s stories brings Wideman to the decision to write the selection as both of the brothers recollections. As Limerick tells the story of the old west, she explains, One skill essential to the writing of Western American history is a capacity to deal with multiple points of view (Limerick p. 504). She explains this through many stories, including the stories of Narcissa Whitman, the missionary sent to save the Indian tribes, and Julia Bulette, a prostitute. Both were murdered. Narcissa by the Indian tribe she was working with, and Julia by John Milleain of Virginia City. The Indians were looked upon as beasts, and Milleain was praised by the respectable women of Virginia City. In perspective, and in Limericks opinion, the Indians may not have been to blame, due to the fact that they were merely protecting themselves from the diseases brought on by Narcissa that had already killed every infected tribe member. Not to forget Julia Bulette s favored death just because her profession was not morally accepted. These are the views referred to by Limerick that are often skipped over in stories ... I think technology played a key factor in the success of Galanz. At the very beginning, Galanz s most important components were all purchased from its rivals. When Galanz became the leader in the microwave ovens market, its rivals refused to supply the most important component magnetron to it. So it had to design its own magnetron. After its design in the magnetron, it enhanced in R amp;D capability and production innovation. This allowed the company ti reduce costs and provide differentiated features in its products. Meanwhile, the company started providing more ODM service to large OEM clients as well as receiving more orders for products with Galanz brand from small and mid size enterprises in developing countries. Question4: What are Galanz s competitive and operations strategies, and how does its operations strategy support its competitive strategy? Galanz s competitive strategy was low cost, and its operation strategy was transfer of production line through OEM agreement. First tactic used by Galanz was to escalate its production capacity through a free production line transfer. Second tactic was to attract component suppliers setting up component production facilities in Galanz. Then Galanz fully utilized its production facilities and labor resources to the extreme by operating three shifts per day, seven days a week and 365 day a year. This allowed the ... Mannerism was a XVI century art style influenced by, and at the same time a reaction to, the harmonious ideals of the Italian High Renaissance. Mannerism is notable for its artificial ( as opposed to naturalistic ) qualities which favor compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier Renaissance painting. Veneration was not idolatrous because it was referred to the prototype represented in the image. Among the saints, the Virgin has a primordial place because she is the Mother of God and the the prime intercessor between Man and Christ. Since the Virgin s role had been denied by the Protestants, the Catholic Church responded by emphasizing her special status. In the Assumption of the Virgin , the Virgin is assumed to ascend to Heaven with her body preserved from corruption as a reward for her faith and good works. Another determining factor in evaluating a painting s context is patronage and, in XVI century Spain, this was largely either religious or monarquic. The monarquic alliance with the Catholic faith was a salient feature of the Spanish court and, in particular, in the kingdom of Philip II. To understand why El Greco ( which means the Greek since he came from Crete ) found his way to Toledo, Spain in 1577, after studying painting in Venice and Rome, it is essential to realize that Spain, at the time, offered great opportunities for artists, largely because of the patronage of king Philip II. • 9. Essay on The Truth of Love Revealed in Adam’s Curse The Truth of Love Revealed in Adam s Curse Adam s Curse is a poem by William Butler Yeats that was written at a time when his first true love, Maud Gonne, had married Major John MacBride. This may have caused Yeats much pain and Yeats may have felt as cursed as Adam felt when God had punished man from the Garden of Eden. This poem, in fact, symbolizes his pain and loss of love that he once had and is a recollection of his memories during happier times with Maud. He believes that falling in love with Maud is so similar to the hard work he puts into the poems he writes. If one were not too look into the poem they would in fact miss this entirely. Yeats then begins the next part of the poem quite literally. He recalls a conversation he has with Kathleen, Maud s sister. She is speaking of beautiful women, and how beauty is not achieved easily. Beauty is not as natural as many people think. This beauty blinds a man, just as Yeats was by Maud. Yeats thought Maud was beautiful and did not see the flaws until now. It is sad, because Yeats now realizes, there is no fine thing , just as God has cursed men, he has done the same to women. He is sure that there is neither a perfect romance nor a perfect woman. He states that it must be labored as the rest of life. Yeats speaks of the traditions that he followed to court Maud. Men have laid out the laws on how to fall in love, and he followed these lessons. These traditions now seem frivolous to him, since he doesn t care anymore. They did not work for him and he lost his love. He is kind of angry that he was foolish enough to believe they would work. The bureau was a joint initiative by the Admiralty (authority responsible for the command of the Royal Navy in the UK until 1964) and the War Office (department of the British Government responsible of the Army between the 1700 s 1964). MI6 was initially founded to oversee activities being conducted by the Imperial German Government at the time. MI6 didn t play a very big role throughout World War 1 because it could not establish a solid network over German soil and due to this, most of the information was being supplied by the military. After the Great War many of the country s resources had been depleted, however MI6 created a close relationship with the diplomatic service (a service that provided authorized personnel a diplomatic immunity so that they were allowed safe passage to other countries). This helped with building networks in foreign countries. With this, the Secret Intelligence Service began focusing on Communism , in particular, Russian Bolshevism . A plan was made to overthrow the Bolshevik Government, and everything was in check for who would lead after that, however all of a sudden, many Russian politicians were being murdered and MI6 took the blame, so the operation ended up as a Failure. This scene is when the team first meets the other prospective team members and develop their relationships with each other. Yakin uses this scene to show the tension and intimidation between the two separate teams, especially focusing in on the two coaches (Boone and Yoast) while giving the audience an idea of where their relationship stands. An example in this clip is when Coach Boone walks in to acknowledge the team, you do not hear his footsteps or the sound of his whistle around his neck hitting against the fabric of his shirt. The director has done this to put more emphasis on his actions, not the sound his presence is making for example, if there was an excess of sound effects for every minute sound made would distract the audience who would not be able to focus in on his paltry movement which have considerable meaning to the scene, an example of this would be the way Coach Boone walks up to the team, his whistle is swinging from side to side making no sound, you can see he is in an angry state with no sound intensifying this fact. The lack of sound effects is not used often in the whole film itself, therefore making an effect when the technique is indeed used. Yakin used dialogue in a certain way producing an intimidating character (Coach Boone). For example, Coach Boone says, it is a dictatorship, and I am the law this quote from Coach Boone is important because it gives his character authority. Experimenting in the late 1800s, scientists Louis Pasteur in France, then Joseph Lister in England, made discoveries that revolutionized patient health. Their work eliminated some of the health risks patients experienced throughout medical processes. Both Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister transformed treatment, to the process and eventually to the patient during the Industrial Revolution. Before scientific improvements introduced by Pasteur and Lister, there was a lack of cleanliness throughout the surgical process. Rhetorical Analysis Of President Obama s Farewell Address In President Obama s Farewell Address, Obama actively tries to persuade his audience to step up and make a change; He wants more people to step out of their comfort zone and make something happen. He persuades his audience by using interesting word choice, connecting with them, and talking about the future of American democracy. In the beginning of his address, he says, you can tell I m a lame duck ... By beginning with a lighthearted joke, he puts himself in an amiable light and makes the audience more comfortable with him and more inclined to listen to what he has to say. He then connects with the audience by saying, Whether we ve seen eye to eye or rarely agreed at all, my conversations with you, the American people in living rooms and schools; at farms and in factory floors... Obama says this to show that he took his time to go to those places to talk to people, which lets the audience knows that he cares and is willing to go out of his way to sit on factory floors to listen to what people have to say. By starting off his address this way, he lets the audience know how much he cares, which, in turn, makes the audience care about what he is about to tell them. Obama soon introduces his claim by saying, This is where I learned that change only happens when ordinary people get involved, get engaged, and come together to demand it. Here, he is claiming that it is ordinary people people like the audience who are the ones who are to bring about change. To get the audience more involved, he chooses to use words such as: we, our, and you. He uses these words to addresses each and every person in the audience personally and by doing this, he makes them agree with him because they feel that they are being spoken to directly. In one paragraph of his speech, he says, But that s what we did. That s what you did. You were the change. You answered people s hopes, and because of you, by almost every measure, America is a better, stronger place than it was when we started. Here, he repeats the word you to emphasize the fact that he is addressing each person directly and that they are the ones who make changes, that they are the ones who make America a better place. Smoking cigarettes causes about 1 in every 5 deaths in the United States each year. (National Institutes of Health). Tobacco has many chemicals that harm the organs in the body. It also damages the blood vessels, which increases the risk of atherosclerosis (Smoking Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Disease)). The carbon dioxide that is coming from the cigarette binds to the hemoglobin, a substance that is found in red blood cells, preventing the blood from carrying a full load of oxygen that is needed to sustain the body. Making it harder to breath and stressing the heart. Smoking also damages the heart vessels, which affects how well the blood flows around the body making the heart work more. • 31. Argumentative Essay On US Draft U.S. Draft Essay The United States of America has always been a country based on the protection of its citizens freedom. Due to this long held principle, which comprises the country s core values, the concept of universal national service (more commonly known as the draft) is quite controversial. Advocates for the draft argue that the drafting of eligible Americans is necessary to preserve a strong military that is capable of protecting the U.S. from possible attacks, as well as instilling a sense of national pride in its youth. While the draft could potentially strengthen the military in theory, the draft could also be quite counterintuitive in reality. Furthermore, the U.S. Draft, in some ways, could be infringing on citizens human rights ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned above, military officials see the draft as unnecessary. In addition to these officials, public opposition to the draft is growing. According to a survey, 80 percent of Americans opposed the draft in 2007 (Text 5, graphic). If the majority of the country opposes something that would directly affect its youth, then that something should not be reinstituted. Public opinion on the reinstitution of the draft reflects the opposition that would be present if it were reinstituted. Draft eligible Americans would most certainly try to find a way out of military service, as draftees have done in the past. But because the public opinion on the draft has shifted dramatically since 1980, where 59 percent of Americans were in favor of the draft, the resentment associated with serving would most likely be higher (Text 5, graphic). This resentment is almost inevitable, especially with pro draft arguments claiming the need to serve in the military in exchange for citizenship rights (Text 1, line 61). Rights granted by citizenship should not have requirements in order to make use of them; that is why one is granted these rights with U.S. citizenship and not after serving in the military. Not only are citizens rights at stake, but also the right to education. Bill Maxwell argues that serving in the military should be a requirement in order to attend college (Text 3, line 45). Military service as a requirement for college would definitely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Disease Of Red Measles Or Measles Rubeola Rubeola, also called red measles or measles, is an acute viral disease that causes a red rash over the body. Measles is one of the most common and most deadly communicable childhood diseases. It is spread from one child to another through direct contact with droplets from the nose and throat. Sometimes, it is spread through air borne droplets from an infected child. This is a very contagious disease that usually consists of a rash, fever, and cough. The rubeola virus can live on surfaces for hours. The virus was first isolated in 1954 by Nobel Laureate John F. Enders and Thomas Peebles, who were careful to point out that the isolations were made from patients who had Koplik s spots, white spots under the tongue. The rubeola virus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Symptoms of measles begin to appear about seven to fourteen days after a person is infected, but can be as long as twenty days. Most cases start with a mild to moderate fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and sore throat. About three to five days later, a red rash appears. The rash begins at the hairline, then spreads down to the rest of the body. When the rash appears, the fever may be as high as 103°F to105°F. Symptoms may last for one to two weeks. Many cases are complicated by secondary infections caused by bacterial pathogens, mainly Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Haemophilus influenzae. These pathogens readily invade the body because measles damages the normal body defenses. Secondary infections most commonly cause earaches and pneumonia. Measles can be prevented by injecting an attenuated rubeola virus vaccine. At the time of the introduction of the vaccine in the early 1960s, there were about 400,000 cases of the disease were being reported each year in the United States, probably representing one tenth of the actual number of victims. The number of cases in the United States have declined to maybe just a few each year. In 1980 the worldwide incidence of rubeola was estimated to be 100 million with 5.8 million deaths. Globally, vaccination programs have lowered the number of cases dramatically since then, however, the decline in incidence has not been uniform among the different regions of ... • 33. Leif Enger Symbolism Birds represent God s presence unless they are interfered with people. Leif Enger strategically created hidden places for the references of birds into his story that become a scavenger hunt for the reader. The Lands encounter a lot of positive and negative occasions with birds. Though God guides them along this journey to find Jeremiah s son, Davy, God finds ways to show his presence through others. In this book, God appears through many symbols of birds. His presence appears through people or in new places. But, when birds are interfered with people, their positive presence of God has a negative turn. It determines how the next portion of the Land s journey will go and their luck to come. Towards the middle of the story, Leif Enger introduces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This seemed as though it were a sign from God. So far, Leif Enger has used Birds in his story as representations of God s presence. This part in the novel, however, is somewhat opposite. After the Lands had stopped by August and Birdie s place, they stared to drive across the boarder into North Dakota. As they were driving on an open road with no other approaching cars, Swede noticed something black, flapping in the middle of the road up ahead. They later realize it is a dead crow. This however was not common what so ever to see a crow in North Dakota. They thought nothing of it and proceeded on their journey. As they kept driving, there was yet another crow found dead in the middle of the road. Jeremiah later goes on to say, I was just thinking, all the years I spent in North Dakota, that s the first crow I ever saw hit on the road. (page 134) Enger purposefully made Jeremiah s line prominent to tell the reader that this was very suspicious and out of the ordinary to see not one, but two dead crows on their way. God still seemed to appear at this moment but in a different perception. God seemed to be warning them that something bad was yet to come. Perhaps if the crows weren t found dead, they could have meaning that the Land s were headed in the right direction. Although because the crows were dead, the Land s were followed with bad news the next day. This shows that God s presence has been represented through birds. Although, when birds are interfered with people, such as possibly crows being hit by a vehicle, they lose the presence of God and bad news is yet to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
