Unequal treatment and the lack of power are phenomena Deaf people have endured throughout
time because of their inability to hear. Historically hearing people viewed deafness as a defect of
the mind and body and they did not afford the Deaf the right to an education, own property or sign
contracts.
Deaf people have long been subjugated by hearing people in all areas of life. The most blatant
act of audism occurred in the education of Deaf children. From 1880 until today hearing people
have dictated that the method of education utilized should be one that enables the Deaf to more
readily assimilate into the mainstream society. In order to achieve this goal, Deaf children were
forced to wear auditory trainers (machines that supposedly allowed them to listen to teachers
voices) and were slapped with rulers if they attempted to sign or gesture out of frustration.

appropriate to grade level but altering behavior and improving speech ability. Even with such an
antagonistic environment the Deaf were forced into obtaining an education but for what means?
Until 1880 many Deaf people worked as teachers of the Deaf, but after the Milan Conference of
1880, which decreed that all instruction of Deaf be done through spoken language, Deaf teachers

Chief Complaint: Frank was having incessant wheezing for the last 2 weeks. His pediatrician
decided to refer him to an allergist to assess his issues with chronic asthma and nasal congestion
(rhinitis).
History of Current Illness: First occurrence of an abnormal wheezing and breathing issues occurred
when he was three years old. His grandparents had recently obtained a canine animal (dog), which
was when these episodes of abnormal wheezing began occurring with increasing frequency every
time he returned to his grandparents house. Starting at four years of age, he also began having
horrible coughing/wheezing around the beginning of spring and end of summer with the changing
of the seasons. As Frank got older in age and began participating in sports activities, his breathing
issues would tend to flare up more often. By the age of ten, he had hospitalized three times for
issues involving uncontrolled asthma. He was treated with intravenous steroids and prescribed
bronchodilators to minimize inflammation and muscle constriction in his airways. Additionally, he
had been to the ER numerous times suffering from serious asthma onslaughts. History also includes
sinus infections in the maxillary portions of the face with green fluid emissions from his nose

Greek drama was performed in the late 6th century BCE in ancient Greece. Tragedians like
Euripides wrote very influential and popular plays such as the Bacchae. Greek tragedies lead to
Greek comedies such as Aristophanes Lysistrata. Many of the Greek dramas have similar concepts,
one of being duality. Without duality, the nature of our lives and the environment around us
remains unbalanced.
Pentheus and Dionysus represent a factor of duality. For example, they both battle against each
other to prove their point as leaders. Pentheus has just become the new king of Thebes and
would like to gain power of his people. He seeks to rule over with rationality and social order.
Whereas Dionysus is the youngest of all Olympians and wishes to prove to the world that he is
an all powerful god. However, he is also known as the god of wine and believes that everyone
should wind down once in a while and celebrate with self intoxication. His irrational ideas and
objectives are the opposite of Pentheus. The ultimate conflict between the two characters is that
Pentheus is in denial of Dionysus existence because he refuses to believe in irrationality. For
example in lines 471 480 in the Bacchae, Pentheus is speaking to Dionysus about Dionysus and is
in denial of his existence. Pentheus is so oblivious that he does not even recognize his presence.
This relates to duality because Dionysus is the opposite force working against Pentheus or vice
