Essay on Thycydides and The Peloponnesian War
The perspective that Thucydides took to write History of the Peloponnesian War gave his work, on a
first read, the impression that his opinion was removed to provide an objective analysis of the
destruction of the greatness of Athens over the period of the war. He began with a medical history of
how humanity structured the first societies based on the interplay between fear, interest, and honor.
Then, progressed to how war devolved the great Athenian society. Which took Thucydides from
revisiting eloquent speeches over strategy to simpler retellings of brash disputes. Thoughtful
placement displayed Thucydides opinion of Athens actions, how he viewed the other city states
positions on various issues in the book, and emphasized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pericles words, the man who can most truly be accounted brave is he who best knows the meaning of
what is sweet in life and of what is terrible, and then goes out undeterred to meet what is to come.
(Thucydides Pg. 147) addressed fear through the common countermeasure of bravery. What he wants
to get across is the fact fear should not be ignored but calculated and met in an intellectual manner. In
Pericles mind this effective method showed the acknowledgement of the resolution to move past this
and on to the other society structures levels of interest and honor. Pericles rational reasoning of the
society structure addressed fear through countermeasures then progressed to interest and emphasized
honor. In the case of the funeral oration the fear of bodily injury is addressed and overcome due to the
rationalization that it promotes the interest of the general people and bestows honor on the individual
through successfully fulfilling relationships of fear, interest, and honor, in service to Athens.
The service to Athens was expected not only on the battlefield but in the political realm as well. The
firm stance taken by Pericles about the political interests of the citizens of Athens was, we do not say
that a man who takes no interest in politics is a man who minds his own business; we say that he

The Importance Of Rights In Football Rights
At any high school football game, football players take a knee on the field when either an opponent s
player or their own team player is injured. This shows respect; a gesture of self surrender before the
greater reality of human suffering . However, when it comes to an actual NFL football game, taking
the knee has a whole different concept after former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin
Kaepernick took the knee at a football game during the National Anthem as a form of protest against
the racial injustice and police brutality. After the impression Kaepernick made, half has argued that
this gesture is unpatriotic and politics should be disregarded in sports and the other half, including
some other football teams, are with Kaepernick and agree with his protest of police violence against
African Americans. Although it was and still now a strong movement, the reason behind it nowadays
has become redundant and shouldn t be as relevant as it is now. To start off, Colin Kaepernick started
his movement last year around the months of August and September. It began with him being seen
sitting down during the national anthem during preseason in August to him actually kneeling down in
September; a start of a silent protest. Kaepernick then later gave an explanation to his actions via NFL
website stating, I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black
people and people of color (SBNation). In other words, his reasoning for not

Patriarchy In Their Eyes Were Watching God
Society has always valued men more than women. This is seen in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching
God, by Zora Neale Hurston. The main character, Janie, lives in a patriarchal society, which is also
fueled by racism. She struggles to overcome patriarchy in the midst of degrading relationships. She
marries three different men, and each man shows the effects patriarchy has on a society. This novel
shows how oppressed women are, compared to men, and examples are given through Janie s different
relationships.
Logan Killicks is was Janie s first relationships shown in Their Eyes Were Watching God. Janie s
nanny is a patriarchal woman and believes a woman needs a man in her life for protection. Janie s
relationship with Logan starts off well, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not much has changed except for the rights that women have. Women are still seen as inferior to men
and are often beat by their husbands. Feminism is very prevalent in today s society. Women stand up
for other women and for themselves. However, this is not enough. Women should be treated the same
way that men are treated. It is that simple. Established societal norms are ruining, and have been
ruining, the world for a long time. Hurston was ahead of her time and would have been praised if she
had published this book today. At the time, people were blind to the patriarchal influence over them.
People are now able to open their eyes and see the cultural separation between male and female. A
change is needed today, so books like this are not needed in the future in order to call our attention to

Motif In Fahrenheit 451 By Ray Bradbury
After risking their lives to burn the books, will they have reached their goal to prevent people reading
books? Fahrenheit 451 is a novel set in the future, from having TV walls to mechanical dogs (the
hound). Montag who is a firefighter burns the books, then towards the end of the book switches
because of Calreese who is a 17 year old girl who introduces montag tp innocence. Beatty who is also
a firefighter HATES books and anyone who insists on reading them. When Beatty finds out Montag

Throughout the novel books evolving in the beginning. Montag burns the books and is trying to
prevent the usage of books. Towards the middle of the book we find out montag is hiding books, and
his wife points out that it s a huge risk. He might come burn the house and the family (Bradbury 2.25).
This is showing bravery because he is risking the books and his wife to save the books. It s dangerous
because he s threatening to burn his own house down.
An example of symbolism in this novel is the hound. Montag sees the hound as something that can kill
him. Didn t i hint enough when I sent the hound around your place? montag s face was entirely numb
and featureless (bradbury 3.2 3). After montag killed Beatty the hound which montag fears went after
him. This shows bravery because Montag s conquering his fear of the hound for the society. This is
dangerous because the hound can kill him.
An example of imagery in this novel is fire. They use fire as a danger. The burning of the books was
making the people mad, so the protest started. The woman s hand twitched on the single match switch.
The fumes of the kerosene bloomed up about her . The lady who is protesting the burning of the books
so she burns herself alive. This is showing danger because she is burning herself and a risk because
she is taking a stand for her

Short A Guy Ad Analysis
Analyzing Short a Guy There are always commercials that will leave a lasting impression on us,
making our dream somewhat of a reality. Sometimes it s possible that we may need a push or a
product to be directed to the goal that was far from our reach. Nike s Short a Guy from Wieden +
Kennedy is one such advertisement that appeals to the audience s emotion and further on motivates
them to live their dream. In the advertisement, a young man in his teens takes us on an unforgettable
adventure starting at the basketball court with a team who is short a guy. He keeps getting invitations
to various sports while encountering pro athletes such as Mike Trout, Garrett Richards, Misty May

Bonin explains, These techniques exemplify Nike s core message of Just Do It with their own
imaginative methods. Nike used a young boy as their lead role to demonstrate their message of
embracing everything that s thrown at you. For example, the protagonist tries out soccer and scores a
goal appealing to the audience that trying something new can always be fun. In every scene, we see
the protagonist enjoying himself and not letting the moment of the game have too much of an effect
on the way he plays. This shows that without the athletic apparel Nike showcased on the
advertisement, you re more likely to dream then make your story a reality. Nike shows us that it is
more than just a brand. We clearly see that in the action filled scenes that bring the Nike message into
motion. Every scene is unexpected allowing us to live in the action of the protagonist as the camera
angles change with the scenery. We are put in the spotlight with the protagonist showing us the joy and
excitement of playing with different pro athletes. The experience is an unforgettable one, which leaves
a positive impression not only on the people but the Nike brand as a whole. The advertisement shows
that the first step to playing with the pros is to just do

The Media Regulation Of The Uk
The media regulation in the U.K. is more extensive compared to the U.S. Ofcom is an independent
regulator and competition authority across television, radio etc. The PCC, also an independent body,
deals with complaints from members of the public about editorial content of newspaper and
magazines. The behavior of media is far more regulated in Britain compared to the U.S. In U.S. the
views can complain about the content to individual media outlets but in Britain the complaints are
published on various governmental website making it more visible. This means that the impact of
government regulation is more evident in British media than in the American media.
BBC is the only media outlet that is not funded by any organization or advertisers. Anyone who owns
a television has to pay the license fee, which helps fund the BBC. In the most recent famous case,
Prime Minister Tony Blair s administration became furious over a report by a BBC freelance
correspondent that the Labour government had sexed up the evidence of weapons of mass destruction
in Iraq in order to build public consensus for sending British troops to war. Although it later became
apparent that evidence of these weapons was inconclusive, an inquiry into the matter (which also
involved the suicide of a government official responsible for unauthorized comments) led to the
resignation of both the head of the BBC Board of Governors and the BBC director general (Hutton
Inquiry, 2004; Dyke, 2005). In a study of the

Examples Of Feminism In The Story Thank You Ma Am
In the story, Thank you Ma am, the woman is strict, and mean at the beginning of the story, and as the
plot develops toward the end, the woman lets her soft side shine. At the beginning, the woman is
walking, and Roger, tries to steal her purse. At that, the woman lashes out with her mean and strict
side as shown by kicking and shaking the kid. Afterwards, she invites him to dinner and gives him $10
to buy a pair of blue suede shoes. Thus her soft side.
At the beginning of the story the woman is strict, and mean. The author illustrates these traits really
nicely. The author illustrates the woman s strictness due to the words she uses. I would teach you right
from wrong is an excellent example. It really illustrates how the woman is strict ... Show more content

Towards the end, her soft side starts to shine through. They are strict due to the words and impressions
that the words form in our mind. An example is this. But you put yourself in contact with me said the
woman If you think that that contact is not going to last awhile, you got another thought coming,
When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs, Luella Bates Washington Jones.
From this quote, it forms an impression that the woman is strict and is ready to teach some lessons.
The woman is also mean at the beginning of the story due to her actions. Her ruthless and harsh
actions really show us that she is mean. Sweat popped out on the boy s face and he began to struggle.
Mrs. Jones stopped, jerked him around in front of her, put a half nelson about his neck, and continued
to drag him up the street. no nice woman would ever put a half nelson around any kid s neck. That is
just plain brutal and merciless. Therefor she is mean. At the end of the story, the woman s soft side
comes out when she invites him to dinner and gives them $10 to buy what they want. Then we ll eat
said the woman I believe you re hungry or been hungry to try to snatch my pocketbook. When they
were finished eating she got up and said, now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue
suede shoes. This shows that the woman s soft side has came out because even though the boy tries to
steal from her, she stills gives the boy something to eat and $10 to buy something that they really
wants. Therefor, her soft side. The woman is mean and strict at the beginning of the story. Then, as the

Super Ego In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies
Freud, developed a way of thinking that broke down the mind into the id, ego, and super ego. In
William Golding s book, Lord of the Flies this theory explains the boys descent into savagery because
of the uneven balance of the egos. The id represented the instinctual desires that required immediate
satisfaction. The super ego represented moral standards and rule following. Lastly the ego is the
healthy balance between the ids desires and the superegos moderation. The ego and the superego were
too weak, Freud explains the breakdown of the boys turning into savages because the egos were off
balance given that, Freud describes the descent the best. In the novel, Jack illustrates the id. This can
be first noticed when Jack adventures off to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ego was supposed to be a healthy balance between the id s wants and the super ego s self control.
A time he balanced the id and the super ego is when the council is telling Ralph to step down as chief
and he says, I ought to give up being chief. Hear em (93). This shows he is the ego. The super ego
would have instantly stepped down, and the id would ve shot down any rebellions. Ralph considers
what is best for the group, making him a plain ego. Another tim this connection is visible is when
Ralph goes back to get Piggy s glasses from jack and says, I ve come to see about the fire... and Piggy
s specs. (176). This shows he is stabilizing Piggy, who wouldn t have the guts to come face to face
with Jack, and also between Jack, who wouldn t have made an effort to get someone s glasses back.
This is the final time Ralph grasps his ego title, because after this moment, Piggy is killed and Ralph is
tracked down by Jack. With out Ralph, or the ego, in control, Jack, the id, becomes controlling which
leads to destruction. This demonstrates that without authority, or a true balance between the id and
super ego, human development breaks

Racial, Racial, And Cultural Stereotypes In The Middle...
Nowadays, racial, societal, and cultural stereotypes are, unfortunately, becoming more and more
common. Whether it be about something as insignificant as every high schoolers supposed immaturity,
to something as substantial as a gender stereotype that denies people their rights, these misconceptions
are hurting people every single day. One popular group to stereotype recently has been the Middle
East. Almost everything people say about them is factually incorrect. The political world does not help
much either. Many biased or misinformed politicians say things that aren t true, which then imprints
society, which causes these misconceptions to bloom. Some of the most common misconceptions are
what defines an Arab, all Middle Easterns hate Americans and are out to bomb them, and more.
Middle Eastern stereotypes are misguided due to assumptions made with a lack of information, biases
in the news, and implications made by our government, and other citizens only speak what they hear.
Many of the Middle Eastern misconceptions you hear most often are about Arabs. But while you may
think these misconceptions are about Arab culture, the misunderstanding is really about what an Arab
actually is. According to the American Arab Anti Discrimination Committee, or ADC, Arab is a
cultural and linguistic term. It refers to those who speak Arabic as their first language. Arabs are
united by culture and by history. Arabs are not a race. Some have blue eyes and red hair; others are

Informative Essay On Thanksgiving
Did you know that Pilgrims and the Indians made the day of Thanksgiving on November 29 1623?
Well, if you did than that s great. I wrote about Thanksgiving because it s the holiday that our family
always cherishes. Sometimes I would watch cooking channels to learn how to cook Thanksgiving
food for my family. It s really what we do every Thanksgiving.
The definition of Thanksgiving is the expression of gratitude, especially to God. It also means an
annual holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. The holiday
commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, and is held in the U.S on the
forth Thursday in November. A similar holiday is held in Canada, usually on the second Monday in
October.

The Importance Of Western Imperialism In China
Western imperialism in China was very significant, costed the lives of millions of people, but also
helped shape China into a much stronger country than it was before, being ruled by the Qing Dynasty.
Imperialism is a country extending its power and influence through the use of military force. There
were two wars between the imperialists and China, the first and second Opium wars. The result of
these wars was the weakening of the Qing Dynasty and led to a time of rebuilding, which was a great
struggle, for China. The Europeans wanted to trade with China because of the great opportunity that
they saw in the market. China s population, which was 430 million, was seen as a fast and easy way
for the Europeans to make a lot of money. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
China was weakened and by this period in time, had become dependent on the Europeans, which now
controlled them.
The Chinese were able to learn from their mistakes from the past and turn them into positives in order
to better improve their economy for the future. With the opened ports and foreigners free to visit
China, the educated citizens class was increasing in numbers. Many of these people were not happy
with the progress of the Qing Dynasty and started to form groups in order to help find alternatives to
certain situations. By 1912 the last Chinese emperor stepped down and the order that had ruled over
China for two thousand years had finally fallen. This was a new start for the China. The rebuilding of
China was very difficult, but using what they had learned, China was able to modernize themselves in
many aspects, including military, improve their economy, and overall developed themselves into a
superior country.
The British wanted to do business with China after seeing the market potential because of the
population, as well as the significant growth in the past two centuries. China s population increased by
330 million people less than two centuries. The agricultural production in China was not able to keep
up with the rapid increase in population. The British saw opportunity in this and believed that they
could generate a great amount of money from the market. China s refusal to trade with the British was

Summary Of Gerald Graff s Hidden Intelectuals
Hidden Intelectuals Gerald Graff divide intelligence into two categories the first one nook smarts and
the second one is street smarts . Book smarts refers to people who are able to succeed scholastically.
Street smarts refers to a person who has a lot of common sense and knows what s going on in the
world. When Graff was young, he shows how street smarts are being bullied by his neighbour such as
the hoods . He tells us about how he lived in Chicago where people who show their street smarts are
seen by the hoods as putting airs over them. They will be called as smart ass and being bullied and
they will take your money. ... he relieved me of my pocket change along with my self respect. But in
our society, book smarts are seen better than people who are street smarts. I grew up torn, then,
between the need to prove i was smart and the fear of beating if I proved it too well: between the need
not to jeopardize my respectable furue and the need to impress the hoods. by this he tells us that he is
in a dilemma between getting a good job and develop his book smarts or develop his street smarts to
impress his neighborhood. In the ending of this article he thinks that schools and college are not
giving students the chance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because usually book smarts are labelled as the good kids and street smarts are labeled the
rebel or trouble maker. But to be successful in our career or job we need both street smart and book
smarts. As Graff says if student are given the chance to pursue their interest to be street smarts
students will slowly develop their book smarts. I agree because based on my experience if i was given
the chance to learn what i like i would be more attentive or excited about school. School can do this by
giving assignment on what street smart student likes for example about game or car that fascinate
them. By this they will develop their street smart and book

Theme Of Injustice In The Scottsboro Boys
True Injustice Prepared to see The Scottsboro Boys, I awaited in the view obstructed row H behind a
mountain of curly red hair. Between my challenged vision, in pair with a simple wooden set which
dragged into the theater, not much grabbed my attention. Oh, how wrong I would quickly prove to be.
Boom! Like a firecracker on the Fourth of July, people, shouts, and cheers exploded into the room. My
head swiveled in every direction, overwhelmed by the euphoric commotion that flooded into the
theatre. At that moment, I couldn t help but smile... a smile that would soon fade. This time can we tell
the truth? Right off the bat, the Scottsboro Boys set the tone. Nine African American boys falsely
accused of raping two white females on a train in Alabama during the 1930 s. It came as no surprise
that truth and injustice were woven into the plot. Yet, the manifestation of these corruptions develops
through the incomparable resilience and integrity displayed by the Scottsboro Boys in this production.
Against all odds, they never wavered in their struggle for freedom, exhibiting unmatched perseverance
and aligning themselves with the truth. To start, one of the many things that stood out to me was The
Lady who was mysteriously present in every scene. Without lines until the very end of the
performance, it was like she was watching and learning from the play simultaneously with audience.
Initially, I couldn t pinpoint the importance of her role in the production, yet along with

Although getting the truck stolen from him kinda seems like a big deal, it is not because that sort of

Essay on The Truth about Cannibalism
The Truth about Cannibalism
Typical Western thought directs people to examine the practices of cannibalism as savage and
primitive. More often than not, this type of association exists because the people viewing the action
are frightened and confused by that which they do not understand. In fact, some would even claim
that, cannibalism is merely a product of European imagination (Barker, 2), thereby completely
denying its existence. The belief that cannibalism goes against human instinct , as seen in many
literary works including Tarzan, reduces those who practice it to being inhuman. (Barker, 1) However,
scientific findings demonstrate that those who practice cannibalism are still human despite their
difference in beliefs; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interestingly, the Azande were even more feared, however, because they attacked other tribes not only
to eat some of the captured, but also to sell others as slave trade.
The Hua and Gimi tribes of New Guinea differ greatly in theoretical beliefs from the Fang and
Azande. In the Hua tribe, the ultimate reality is not society but the mysteries of the body. (Sanday, 60)
The Hua practice cannibalism because they find the human body to be sacred, and mortuary
cannibalism is necessary to bring out all that is sacred in the body. Nu is the label the tribe uses for the
parts of the body that explain growth and aging, death and illness, the contrast of male and female.
Through this Nu the tribe attempts to explain, if not the whole world, then at least the biological and
social aspects of life. (Sanday, 63). The Gimi tribe uses cannibalism to maintain a maternal connection
of mother and son. Only women actually eat human flesh because Gimi males are, born, loved, buried,
bewailed, eaten, and reborn through their mother. (Sanday, 73) Cannibalism plays a key role in society
to maintain growth and development of the men and women through the mortuary cannibalism by the
mother of the son. While the mother eats the son, the males of the society eat the corresponding parts
of a pig to advance their fallen

The Pros And Cons Of The Democratic-Republican Party
In 1792, the world s oldest political party, the Democratic Party, was founded. During the presidency
of President Andrew Jackson in 1830, the party adopted its name as the Democratic Party as it is
known now. Prior to the renaming of the party, it was known as the Democratic Republican Party
founded by James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson in opposition of the Federalist Party. The
Democratic Party s purposed served to supported states rights and the strict interpretation of the
Constitution (Mayne, 1). Correspondingly, providing financial support to family based agriculture was
one of their main priorities (Mayne, 1). The Federalist Party, their opposition, consisted of wealthy
elites that strived, and fought for one strong all ruling national government, rather than state
governments. As the United States had just recently become independent, the Democratic Republican
Party was determined to prevent the United States from becoming a monarchy. Over the next century,
the Democratic Republican party began to split due to the lack of agreement on major ideas which led
to the current two party system. However, some ideologies remain the same such as moral stance, and
socioeconomic status. Other ideologies like economic view and stance on government power have
caused this split between the Democratic and Republican parties (Mayne, 22). It is imperative to
remember that even though these two parties are completely different, they originated from the same
party with one main goal; To create a government that is run for and by its people (Mayne, 23). I have
still not developed a political identity, but over the past three years of my residence in the United
States, I am more in favor of the Democratic Party and what they stand for. At first, the Democratic
Party started out as the conservative party and the Republicans were the liberals. However, over time,
the Democratic Party has associated itself with social liberalism. Social liberalism is a political
ideology which states that individual liberty requires social justice (DeMichele, 11). To be more
precise, social liberal values include: equal pay, importance of women s rights and healthcare rights,
pro safety, a progressive approach to taxation, and union

Essay on Sweeney Todd
Dynamic characters are characters which go through substantial changes, typically due to a traumatic
or powerful experience. In Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street, by Hugh Wheeler, the
character known as Sweeney Todd is arguably a dynamic character; Due in part, heavily, to having his
tendencies of being entirely self motivated and caring nothing for anyone but himself ripped away as
he discovers he murdered his wife. Sweeney Todd at the beginning of the play obviously seems to care
nothing for anyone except revenge for the supposed murder of his wife. Nearing the end of the play,
He still has that same primary concern for revenge no matter what the cost. However, at the very end
of the play when he discovers his wife dead, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lovett, through nothing short of hard work and a seemingly magical tendency to not get caught in the
act. Sweeney s daughter, Joanna, is his only remaining link to his wife as far as he is aware, yet
regardless of that fact, he is more than willing to put her and Anthony directly in harm s way via a
cunning plan, so that he may get the opportunity to murder the judge. Sweeney Todd shows absolutely
no loyalties to anyone and would go so far as sacrificing the last of his own flesh and blood. Sweeney
ignores opportunities to speak with his daughter and even threatens to severe her jugular when he feels
she is getting in the way or becoming a risk to him. Mrs. Barker, or Sweeney Todd s wife, is dead as
far as he is aware, but he gets into direct confrontations with her numerous times and just pushes her
away; blinded to her existence as his long lost wife. Sweeney Todd pays no attention to the identity of
the woman whom seems to bother and fondle everyone she meets while begging for change. However,
if he hadn t been so distracted with his revenge he might have noticed that thewoman whom stood in
front of him was none other than his wife from many years earlier. It becomes hard to picture a scene
in which any right minded individual could look into the eyes of a long lost spouse and murder them
without becoming privy to the knowledge that they are past partners.

Project A Satire
The action hero who does all his own stunts , that is what American audiences started calling famous
Chinese director, actor, and martial arts expert Jackie Chan. His movies are known to be action
packed, full of hand to hand combat, as well as having some comedic moments. The films analyzed in
this paper will be Project A (1982), Project A 2(1987), as well as Police Story (1985). All of these take
place in Hong Kong and are filled with satirical comedy as well as many martial arts scenes. During
the 1980 s, Hong Kong was known for its wealth, and it was recognized for its politics, expensive real
estate prices, as well as their entertainment. During that time, the manufacturing industry fell, as other
economic aspects like foreign trade and personal and general community services increased. Since

However, when it comes to satirical comedy, I noticed a clear distinction between the three movies.
The first two parts of Project A, give the impression of trying to portray a more serious role. On the
other hand, Police Story, has plenty of satirical moments as well as some sarcastic ones. My
conclusion to this is because Jackie Chan is trying to make fun of the Hong Kong society at the time.
During the 1980 s, crime in Hong Kong was abundant, and because of it, the director of the film tried
to ridicule the drug cartel portrayed in the movie. They are played as clumsy, and easily defeated by
Jackie Chan s incredible martial arts skills. During the whole movie, the astute policeman, played by
Jackie Chan, constantly outsmarts the Hong Kong drug cartel. In other words, the Hong Kong cartel is
portrayed as stupid and incompetent. During the Project A films however, even though we do see this
overpower of the protagonist on his enemies, it is not as apparent. Sanpao, as well as his followers,
play a powerful and intimidating role in this

This semester, I was excited to participate in Latin Aerobics. Previously, I lost seventy pounds the

want to maintain a healthy weight that I earned at my years at American River College. When I first
lost the weight, I panicked because I thought it meant permanently restricting my life to weight control

The Y2k Catastrophe And Its Effects On Society
The Y2K Catastrophe
In The midst of a rising industrial climate, the 1990s was a time for change and expansion. On
December thirty first, 1999 nearly every developed nation in the world anticipated the oncoming new
millennium. After strike of midnight, January first, 2000 a forecasted event would take place, and
many in the world were anxious to comprehend the supposed inevitable. The occurrence of the Y2K
scare changed the way the world revolves around technology during the time period, which has lasting
residual effects on society.
The fear that drove society and a complete farce was the idea that everything on which the modern
world relied would simply come to a halt at the turn of the century. This contemporary concern of the
time over technology caused an alarming dissonance between people s daily realities and the threat of
an impending apocalyptic future.
At the height of computer development, for convenience purposes, digital programmers used two digit
codes in place of the years. For example, instead of writing 1986, computer engineers simply dated
programs with 86, the 19 was left out purposefully. Engineers compressed data usage to save storage,
which at the time was very costly and took up unnecessary space. Eventually these programmers
realized that once the year 2000 comes around then, the dates would revert to 00 which computers will
assume to be 1900. A simple date change to humans would equal a major blunder to a computer. This
glitch held the

Inspectors who visited Winterbourne View considered taking urgent action to close the centre, but
decided that it was in the best interests of the patients to allow NHS and local authority commissioner

CQC ensured that there would be an immediate stop on admissions and that extra staff would be
brought in to protect patients until they could be moved.
When they were satisfied that those arrangements were in place, CQC took enforcement action to
remove the registration of Winterbourne View, the legal process to close a location. The hospital
closed in June.
The report is full of unsafe practices such as;

Finelli s Bust Of St. Peters Basilica
These three busts of women in the 1600s are exceptionally different than those before this time.
Women portraits in the 1600s have obvious influence from these sculptors, but also lack the focus to
detail and movement. Andrea Bolgi sculpted St. Helen which is housed in St. Peters. The sculpture has
movement expressed through the drapery which is used by Bernini in a copious amount of his
sculptures and Algardi used this in his bust of Olympia Maidalchini Pamphilj. Also in St. Peters
Basilica, Francesco Mochi takes the same approach to his sculpture of St. Veronica. St. Veronica is
portrayed in a dramatic way, with multiple folds in her dress and the cloth with Jesus s face is blowing
in the wind. Taking a page from the book of Bernini, Mochi ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He adds a story to his portrait, and has intense detailed style to the face of the sitter without losing
beauty and passion. Finelli s bust is elegantly beautiful, but is not done natural. Finelli fails to focus on
anything about his sitters face which leaves her looking like just another wealthy woman with no
depth to her. Algardi adds detail to the face of his sitter, but instead of portraying at her best moment,
takes a naturalistic approach which makes the portrait unflattering. Bernini added detail needed, but
still managed to make the portrait look like the best version of the sitter. Although, this may represent
the beauty of the sitter more than the skill of the artist. Bernini, Algardi, and Finelli are all infatuated
with detail, this is what makes their portraits stand out from all of the others. These are some of the
first portraits of woman sculpted, and it is fitting to the time that the focus on detail is used on
accessories or sexuality. The artists focus on detail, but each to different parts of their works to create
different qualities. Finelli has fine detail to accessories, and intrinsic drill work. While Bernini is at the
other spectrum, detail to face but faster drill work, and Algardi falls in the middle of this. Bernini,
Algardi, and Finelli are all well respected and each bring their own unique style to baroque period, but
Bernini goes above and beyond. Bernini s

Kendrick Lamar s Music And Music
Kendrick Lamar has lyrics that are hard, but within those lyrics is a description of his childhood which
was even harder. To provide some background on Kendrick Lamar, he grew up in Piru territory of
Compton, also know as Bompton. His parents both used drugs, and listened to many different types of
music ranging from, Jazz and blues to gangsta rap. Any hip hop fan should be familiar with Kendrick
s name, they should also be familiar with his music. The fact that Kendrick Lamar isn t being
recognized as a legend this early in his career slightly upsets me.
Kendrick Lamar s newer music is underappreciated because of the unique sound and thought
provoking lyrics. Many people don t listen to music for the full experience; they just listen for some
background noise. According to a study published by Edison Research, in May 2014, 52.1% of the
music listened to by Americans every day is on the Radio. To think that over half of the music heard
every day is probably coming from car speakers, a dusty radio on your grandfather s workbench, or
that little radio tucked in a corner in your kitchen, is astounding. People that listen to music on the
radio normally don t concentrate on the music. Music is typically used to accompany a mundane task,
or another source of entertainment, like a puzzle. It is also very common to listen to music while
working. And while listening to music while doing other tasks isn t a negative thing, people don t
know what they are listening to. This

Autobiography Of Anne Moody
Anne Moody did not want to give up what she relied on, and she fought for her rights with everything
she had in her. Her willingness to stand for what she thought was right was always there and the
reluctance of her family to fight as well as her confidence that she could be regarded as equal within
the white community were reasons that sustained her transition into the activist. Throughout her
childhood, she was taught about social norms that could not be broken by blacks if they wanted to
gain the semblance of acceptance. However, she always questioned the arguments as to why the black
community had to be segregated. And even among the black community she belonged to, there was a
division between the darker and lighter skinned blacks.

The American Red Cross And Other Organizations At Purnell...
On Monday, October 17th I volunteered to help the American Red Cross and other organizations at
Purnell Swett High School. I was directed to a woman named Priscilla who oversaw a portion of the
outdoor area. Our group was quite diverse. It consisted of young high school and college students,
middle aged parents, some senior citizens, and even a girl who appeared to be no more than nine years
old. Everyone was in good spirits despite the recent tragedy. Our task seemed to be simple enough,
however, we would soon discover it was going to take more planning. We were assigned to the rear of
the school where we would sort through various bags and boxes of donations. Priscilla directed some
of us to carry items to different rooms based on their size and whether the clothes were designed more
males or females, children or adults. As organized piles began to form, these volunteers posted signs
indicating the sizes in those piles. Priscilla asked a different group to take the flat boxes and fold and
tape them to allow packing of the clothes. Another set of people were instructed to write the names of
the recipients on the boxes. The final group, which later consisted of those who completed their share
of the work already, was assigned to fill the boxes with appropriate items and seal them for delivery.
Thanks to the strong leadership skills of Priscilla and the tireless efforts of the volunteers, we were
successful! She was wise to divide our large group into smaller substations.

piece of work. They were to produce an article on cotton tenantry in the United States, in the form of a
photographic and verbal record of the daily living and environment of an average white family of
tenant farmers, (IX). James Agee and Walker Evans set out to write and photograph an article for a
magazine, and ended up experimenting with the form of the novel itself.
James Agee was born in 1909 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was in the urban middle class, so he had no
experience with cotton farming. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Agee and Evans set out to publish an article in Fortune Magazine, but when they brought back their
work to the editors, they were rebuked. The article was over 400 pages of controversial writing and
even various book editors refused to publish it as a novel. Finally in 1941 it was published by Mifflin
in Massachusetts after the author was forced to take out a few outlawed words in the state. They failed
in their original mission to produce an article, but undoubtedly presented a photographic and verbal
record of the average white southern tenant farmer families. By living with three different families for
four weeks, Evans depicted their innermost sorrows through his photographs, and Agee portrayed and
emboldened their spirit by his written words. The novel itself was an experiment in form, with Evans
photos all placed in the front without captions, rather than dispersed throughout the novel. Even in the
text, Agee continually stops himself mid description and enters into a stream of consciousness
describing the difficulties of articulating accurately the tenant families true expressions. For these
reasons, it was considered a failure when it was published, but also for the same reasons it was
considered an amazing success twenty years later in the 1960s.
In the Preface, Agee conveys that this is a book only by necessity. More seriously, it is an effort in
human actuality, in which the reader is no less centrally involved than the

Observing An Average College Student Essay
Observing an average college student during a lecture is a marvelous thing. Sure, there are the
students in the front, attentively taking notes, eagerly soaking in information to be used to pass their
next test and nothing more. Gazing over the sea of people, however, one couldn t help but notice the
vast majority of people using some sort of digital technology; a sleek new MacBook Pro alternating
between Facebook political rants, a fantasy team on the verge of a winless season, and a slideshow of
Ten Celebrities You Didn t Know Have Been Arrested . A girl in sweatpants and a tank top who didn t
even bother to bring a book bag, navigating several group chats and frantically tapping the spider
webbed glass. Some folks will have the next day s homework pulled up, some the PowerPoint
slideshow on Chapter 3 Ocean Currents and Tides , even though it s already being projected at the
front of the room, and even more won t be paying the slightest bit of attention to neither their Surface
Pro or the monotonous droll of the professor, instead wondering how to get that cute guy s number or
whether they have enough in their checking account to hit up Chick Fil A after class. The majority of
these typical college students, however much or little attention they paid to the lecture, will leave this
class confident they have somewhat of a grasp on the material. Many researchers today would beg to
differ, however; studies are being performed across the country linking multitasking in

People With Mental Illnesses
Throughout history people with mental illnesses were considered to be weird, strange, a witch, or even
possessed up until now. So many people have fought for the rights of these people to be considered
normal and welcomed. Still, many other people around the world do not agree with this. It s not fair
for the people who are considered different to be left out and almost completely thrown to the curb
with little to no sympathy. Many of them try to commit suicide to get rid of all the pain and suffering,
but others help them get back up and help them realize that their life is not worth throwing away. Even
though some of these issues have been resolved, people need to be more aware about some of these
mental illnesses and the research scientists are doing to help them. ... Show more content on

This might be because people are not aware of what is really going on with the people around them.
So many illegal incidents have happened throughout the United States because these criminals had
untreated mental illnesses. The article, Mental Illness Awareness and Research states, The infamous
2012 theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado; the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School attack in
Newtown, Connecticut; and the 2015 gun attack at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, (Michael
Auerbach). It is sad to find out that a lot of these incidents are due to the lack of care for people.
Another article, Funding for Research, Not Public Awareness Campaigns, Will Do More for the
Support and Treatment of Mental Illness states, According to the National Institute of Mental Health,
it is likely that tens of millions of Americans each year experience mental illness but only half of those
people seek treatment. This is the reason why people need to be aware of the people around them.
Many of them go through the pain everyday and they don t speak up and then one day they just decide
to end it. It s just

Sea Otters Research Paper
Sea otters are a keystone species, meaning their role in their environment has a greater effect than
other species. As predators, sea otters are critical to maintaining the balance of the near shore kelp
ecosystems. Without sea otters, the undersea animals they prey on would devour the kelp forests off
the coast that provide cover and food for many other marine animals. Additionally, sea otters
indirectly help to reduce levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, a prevalent greenhouse gas, as kelp
forests play an important role in capturing carbon in coastal ecosystems

But due to the fur trade, worldwide numbers plummeted down to a total of 1,000 2,000 in the early
1900s. Today, there are estimated to be just over 106,000 worldwide, with just under 3,000 in
California.
HABITAT RANGE
Sea otters live in shallow coastal waters off the northern Pacific. Their historic range stretched from
Japan, along the coast of Siberia and the Aleutian Chain and down the Alaska, British Columbia,
Washington, Oregon and California coast to Baja California. Currently sea otters can be found in
Canada, Russia, Japan, California and Washington, but the majority of all wild sea otters are found in
Alaskan waters. Recent reports of sea otter sightings have also occurred in Mexico.
In the U.S., there are two distinct sea otter subspecies, the Northern sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni)
and the Southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis). Northern sea otters are found in the Aleutian

California sea otters, live in the waters along the California coastline and range from San Mateo

Watergate Scandal Research Paper
The discovery of a burglary that occurred in the early morning of June 17, 1972 in the Democratic
National Committee headquarters at the Watergate hotel in Washington, D.C., unleashed a series of
arrests and investigations that are known as the Watergate scandal. This incident led to the arrest of
five men, Bernard Barker, Virgilio Gonzalez, Eugenio Martínez, James W. McCord Jr., and Frank
Sturgis who were inside the office attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. When
these men, which were dressed in business attire and wore latex gloves, were taken into custody they
had in their possession cameras, film, tools to break in, and three pen size tear gas guns. James W.
McCord Jr. was born 1924 in Oklahoma, and after obtaining his BBA and MS from college he began
his career in the FBI and worked for the CIA, where he was responsible for the physical security at
Langley headquarters. After leaving the CIA, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

recruited to become one of the Watergate plumbers by G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt but prior
to this event, Martinez along with Barker had broken into the office of Dr. Lewis Fielding, the
psychologist in charge of analyzing Daniel Ellsberg. Then on June 17, 1972, Eugenio Martinez along
with the other man were arrested and taken into custody and was sentenced to one to four years in

The Fabrication And Modification Of T Cuas With Cellulose...
2.1 Fabrication and Modification of T CUAs with Cellulose Acetate (CA) Membrane and Chitosan
Gold Nanoparticles (CS GNPs). T CUAs. Preparation of the T CUAs follows previously described
procedures.[references] Briefly, the fabrication consist of dropcasting polystyrene spheres (PSS) of a
diameter of 1.54 µm onto a conductive carbon pyrolized photoresist film (PPF) electrode.[references]
In a collaboration with the Stevenson group, we have reported a method for detecting H2O2 using T
CUAs.[reference] We introduce two modifications to T CUAs: (1) the addition of a cellulose acetate
(CA) gas permeable membrane selective to NO and (2) the introduction of chitosan and gold
nanoparticles (CS/GNPs) to enhance its catalytic activity, sensitivity, and limit of detection (LOD) to
NO. The schematic of the modified T CUA is illustrated in Scheme 2. The CA membrane precursor
solution was prepared according to a previous procedure.[reference] The pore size of the CA
membrane (~6 Å) filters out non gaseous molecules typically secreted by cells (i.e. proteins). The
average membrane thickness is determined to be ~100 nm using atomic force microscopy (AFM).
This is shown in Figure 1.The second modification is introduced to the T CUAs via one step
electrodeposition of chitosan gold nanoparticles (CS/GNPs). Figure 2 shows scanning electron
microscopy (SEM) images of an unmodified T CUA, a modified CS/GNPs T CUAs. Although, the
size of the GNPs ranges from 5 to 80 nm, there is an

  • 2. Essay on Thycydides and The Peloponnesian War The perspective that Thucydides took to write History of the Peloponnesian War gave his work, on a first read, the impression that his opinion was removed to provide an objective analysis of the destruction of the greatness of Athens over the period of the war. He began with a medical history of how humanity structured the first societies based on the interplay between fear, interest, and honor. Then, progressed to how war devolved the great Athenian society. Which took Thucydides from revisiting eloquent speeches over strategy to simpler retellings of brash disputes. Thoughtful placement displayed Thucydides opinion of Athens actions, how he viewed the other city states positions on various issues in the book, and emphasized ... Pericles words, the man who can most truly be accounted brave is he who best knows the meaning of what is sweet in life and of what is terrible, and then goes out undeterred to meet what is to come. (Thucydides Pg. 147) addressed fear through the common countermeasure of bravery. What he wants to get across is the fact fear should not be ignored but calculated and met in an intellectual manner. In Pericles mind this effective method showed the acknowledgement of the resolution to move past this and on to the other society structures levels of interest and honor. Pericles rational reasoning of the society structure addressed fear through countermeasures then progressed to interest and emphasized honor. In the case of the funeral oration the fear of bodily injury is addressed and overcome due to the rationalization that it promotes the interest of the general people and bestows honor on the individual through successfully fulfilling relationships of fear, interest, and honor, in service to Athens. The service to Athens was expected not only on the battlefield but in the political realm as well. The firm stance taken by Pericles about the political interests of the citizens of Athens was, we do not say that a man who takes no interest in politics is a man who minds his own business; we say that he ... • 3. The Importance Of Rights In Football Rights At any high school football game, football players take a knee on the field when either an opponent s player or their own team player is injured. This shows respect; a gesture of self surrender before the greater reality of human suffering . However, when it comes to an actual NFL football game, taking the knee has a whole different concept after former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick took the knee at a football game during the National Anthem as a form of protest against the racial injustice and police brutality. After the impression Kaepernick made, half has argued that this gesture is unpatriotic and politics should be disregarded in sports and the other half, including some other football teams, are with Kaepernick and agree with his protest of police violence against African Americans. Although it was and still now a strong movement, the reason behind it nowadays has become redundant and shouldn t be as relevant as it is now. To start off, Colin Kaepernick started his movement last year around the months of August and September. It began with him being seen sitting down during the national anthem during preseason in August to him actually kneeling down in September; a start of a silent protest. Kaepernick then later gave an explanation to his actions via NFL website stating, I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color (SBNation). In other words, his reasoning for not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main character, Janie, lives in a patriarchal society, which is also fueled by racism. She struggles to overcome patriarchy in the midst of degrading relationships. She marries three different men, and each man shows the effects patriarchy has on a society. Women are still seen as inferior to men and are often beat by their husbands. Feminism is very prevalent in today s society. Women stand up for other women and for themselves. Hurston was ahead of her time and would have been praised if she had published this book today. At the time, people were blind to the patriarchal influence over them. The Media Regulation Of The Uk The media regulation in the U.K. is more extensive compared to the U.S. Ofcom is an independent regulator and competition authority across television, radio etc. The PCC, also an independent body, deals with complaints from members of the public about editorial content of newspaper and magazines. The behavior of media is far more regulated in Britain compared to the U.S. In U.S. the views can complain about the content to individual media outlets but in Britain the complaints are published on various governmental website making it more visible. This means that the impact of government regulation is more evident in British media than in the American media. BBC is the only media outlet that is not funded by any organization or advertisers. Anyone who owns a television has to pay the license fee, which helps fund the BBC. In the most recent famous case, Prime Minister Tony Blair s administration became furious over a report by a BBC freelance correspondent that the Labour government had sexed up the evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in order to build public consensus for sending British troops to war. Although it later became apparent that evidence of these weapons was inconclusive, an inquiry into the matter (which also involved the suicide of a government official responsible for unauthorized comments) led to the resignation of both the head of the BBC Board of Governors and the BBC director general (Hutton Inquiry, 2004; Dyke, 2005). The id represented the instinctual desires that required immediate satisfaction. The super ego represented moral standards and rule following. Lastly the ego is the healthy balance between the ids desires and the superegos moderation. Whether it be about something as insignificant as every high schoolers supposed immaturity, to something as substantial as a gender stereotype that denies people their rights, these misconceptions are hurting people every single day. One popular group to stereotype recently has been the Middle East. Almost everything people say about them is factually incorrect. The political world does not help much either. Many biased or misinformed politicians say things that aren t true, which then imprints society, which causes these misconceptions to bloom. Some of the most common misconceptions are what defines an Arab, all Middle Easterns hate Americans and are out to bomb them, and more. More often than not, this type of association exists because the people viewing the action are frightened and confused by that which they do not understand. In fact, some would even claim that, cannibalism is merely a product of European imagination (Barker, 2), thereby completely denying its existence. During the presidency of President Andrew Jackson in 1830, the party adopted its name as the Democratic Party as it is known now. Prior to the renaming of the party, it was known as the Democratic Republican Party founded by James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson in opposition of the Federalist Party. The Federalist Party, their opposition, consisted of wealthy elites that strived, and fought for one strong all ruling national government, rather than state governments. As the United States had just recently become independent, the Democratic Republican Party was determined to prevent the United States from becoming a monarchy. Over the next century, the Democratic Republican party began to split due to the lack of agreement on major ideas which led to the current two party system. However, some ideologies remain the same such as moral stance, and socioeconomic status. Other ideologies like economic view and stance on government power have caused this split between the Democratic and Republican parties (Mayne, 22). It is imperative to remember that even though these two parties are completely different, they originated from the same party with one main goal; To create a government that is run for and by its people (Mayne, 23). This contemporary concern of the time over technology caused an alarming dissonance between people s daily realities and the threat of an impending apocalyptic future. At the height of computer development, for convenience purposes, digital programmers used two digit codes in place of the years. For example, instead of writing 1986, computer engineers simply dated programs with 86, the 19 was left out purposefully. Engineers compressed data usage to save storage, which at the time was very costly and took up unnecessary space. Eventually these programmers realized that once the year 2000 comes around then, the dates would revert to 00 which computers will assume to be 1900. A simple date change to humans would equal a major blunder to a computer. This glitch held the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Finelli s Bust Of St. Peters Basilica These three busts of women in the 1600s are exceptionally different than those before this time. Women portraits in the 1600s have obvious influence from these sculptors, but also lack the focus to detail and movement. Andrea Bolgi sculpted St. Helen which is housed in St. Peters. The sculpture has movement expressed through the drapery which is used by Bernini in a copious amount of his sculptures and Algardi used this in his bust of Olympia Maidalchini Pamphilj. Also in St. Peters Basilica, Francesco Mochi takes the same approach to his sculpture of St. Veronica. Finelli s bust is elegantly beautiful, but is not done natural. Finelli fails to focus on anything about his sitters face which leaves her looking like just another wealthy woman with no depth to her. Algardi adds detail to the face of his sitter, but instead of portraying at her best moment, takes a naturalistic approach which makes the portrait unflattering. Bernini added detail needed, but still managed to make the portrait look like the best version of the sitter. Although, this may represent the beauty of the sitter more than the skill of the artist. Bernini, Algardi, and Finelli are all infatuated with detail, this is what makes their portraits stand out from all of the others. These are some of the first portraits of woman sculpted, and it is fitting to the time that the focus on detail is used on accessories or sexuality. According to a study published by Edison Research, in May 2014, 52.1% of the music listened to by Americans every day is on the Radio. To think that over half of the music heard every day is probably coming from car speakers, a dusty radio on your grandfather s workbench, or that little radio tucked in a corner in your kitchen, is astounding. People that listen to music on the radio normally don t concentrate on the music. Music is typically used to accompany a mundane task, or another source of entertainment, like a puzzle. Everyone was in good spirits despite the recent tragedy. Our task seemed to be simple enough, however, we would soon discover it was going to take more planning. We were assigned to the rear of the school where we would sort through various bags and boxes of donations. Priscilla directed some of us to carry items to different rooms based on their size and whether the clothes were designed more males or females, children or adults. As organized piles began to form, these volunteers posted signs indicating the sizes in those piles. Priscilla asked a different group to take the flat boxes and fold and tape them to allow packing of the clothes. Another set of people were instructed to write the names of the recipients on the boxes. The final group, which later consisted of those who completed their share of the work already, was assigned to fill the boxes with appropriate items and seal them for delivery. They were to produce an article on cotton tenantry in the United States, in the form of a photographic and verbal record of the daily living and environment of an average white family of tenant farmers, (IX). Agee and Evans set out to publish an article in Fortune Magazine, but when they brought back their work to the editors, they were rebuked. The article was over 400 pages of controversial writing and even various book editors refused to publish it as a novel. Finally in 1941 it was published by Mifflin in Massachusetts after the author was forced to take out a few outlawed words in the state. They failed in their original mission to produce an article, but undoubtedly presented a photographic and verbal record of the average white southern tenant farmer families. By living with three different families for four weeks, Evans depicted their innermost sorrows through his photographs, and Agee portrayed and emboldened their spirit by his written words. The novel itself was an experiment in form, with Evans photos all placed in the front without captions, rather than dispersed throughout the novel. Even in the text, Agee continually stops himself mid description and enters into a stream of consciousness describing the difficulties of articulating accurately the tenant families true expressions. For these reasons, it was considered a failure when it was published, but also for the same reasons it was considered an amazing success twenty years later in the 1960s. In the Preface, Agee conveys that this is a book only by necessity. More seriously, it is an effort in human actuality, in which the reader is no less centrally involved than the ...
